Farmers ready to protest till May 2024

Farmers from Assam, Punjab in State to create awareness

447 adverse events across India post-vaccination, 3 serious: Centre

NEW DELHI, JAN 17 (AGENCIES/PTI): Agitating farmer unions on Sunday remained firm on holding a tractor rally on the Republic Day and vowed to continue their stir till the Agri laws are repealed, even as Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar urged them to discuss “alternatives” to scrapping the legislation at the next meeting scheduled for January 19. “We are prepared to sit in protest till May 2024... Our demand is that the three laws be taken back and the government provide a legal guarantee on the MSP,” Bharatiya Kisan Union leader Rakesh Tikait said. The next Lok Sabha elections in the country will be due around April-May 2024. The Supreme Court in scheduled to hear on Monday a plea of the central government, filed through the Delhi Police, seeking an injunction against the proposed tractor march or any other kind of protest

by farmers “which seeks to disrupt the gathering and celebrations” of Republic Day on January 26. Addressing the media at Singhu border protest site, union leader Yogendra Yadav said, “We will carry out a tractor parade on the Outer Ring Road in Delhi on Republic Day. The parade will be very peaceful.” “There will be no disruption of the Republic Day parade. The farmers will put up the national flag on their tractors,” he said. Stressing that the farmer unions should give up their “stubborn” stand after the apex court’s stay on the laws on January 12, Agriculture Minister Tomar said they should come for a clause by clause discussion on Tuesday. “Now that the Supreme Court has stayed the implementation of these laws, then there is no question of being stubborn,” Tomar told reporters. The government wants farmer leaders to come for a clause by clause discussion at the next meeting on January 19. Except for the demand of repealing the laws, the government is ready to consider “seriously and with an open heart” other alternatives, he said.

NEW DELHI, JAN 17 (PTI): A national association of doctors and scientists has demanded that all data pertaining to COVID-19 vaccine trials should be made public to enable scientists and healthcare workers to make informed choices regarding administration of vaccination. In a statement issued on Sunday, the Progressive Medicos and Scientists Forum said the Clinical Trial (PMSF) Phase 3 data should be evaluated in a transparent manner as and when available for India for both vaccines and the decision to grant Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) may be revisited once the Phase 3 trials are completed. “All healthcare workers should have an option for opting out without any fear, coercion or any other adverse impact on them, including linking vaccination status to air travel restrictions,” it said.

DIMAPUR, JAN 17 (NPN): Two farmers from Punjab and one from Assam have reached Nagaland to meet local farmers and make them aware about the new farm laws which, according to them, were not beneficial for the farming community. They said they reached Nagaland on Saturday to inform local farmers about the ongoing farmers’ protest in Delhi that is on since November 26, where farmers from Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh are participating and who have declared that their protest would continue till the Central government repeals the farm laws. Interacting with media persons at Hotel Saramati here on Sunday the farmers from Punjab said they wanted to create awareness about the farm laws and minimum support price (MSP), as many farmers in the country were not aware of it. Manjinder Singh Randhawa, who is from Punjab, said when they met farmers of other states, they found that they were not aware about MSP. “So we are travelling to create awareness about the farm laws,” he added. While clarifying that they

DIMAPUR, JAN 17 (NPN): Four new COVID19 positive cases were reported on Sunday-- 1 each in Dimapur, Kohima, Mokokchung and Tuensang, taking the tally to 12058. Further, the distribution across various categories include 4661 cases from the armed forces/police, 1854 returnees, 4971 traced contacts and 572 frontline workers.

Meanwhile, Health department has said that the vaccination drive would resume on Monday. P T I a d d s : I n d i a ’s COVID-19 caseload climbed to 1,05,57,985 on Sunday with 15,144 fresh infections while recoveries surged to 1,01,96,885, pushing the national recovery rate to 96.58 per cent, according to the Health Ministry data.

respected Supreme Court and Constitution of India, the trio asserted that they would not agree to the committee formed by the apex court recently as their demand for repealing the farm laws lay with the Centre. As the Centre had enacted the farm laws, therefore they said their fight was with the Central government. Explaining the disadvantages of the new farm laws, the visiting team said farmers only in Punjab and Haryana were getting MSP. “We have come to know that farmers have no knowledge about it. Farmers do not get the benefits as there are no mandis in other States. So, we are trying to create awareness. In Punjab and Haryana, there are government mandis where they sell their produce. But in other States, it is

DIMAPUR, JAN 17 (NPN): Chakhesang Baptist Church Council (CBCC) has cautioned believers against vested interest groups running misinformation campaign to derail the fight against COVID-19 and advised them not to panic or be swayed by false prophecies but continue to pray that God will use the vaccine to bring healing and protection to all people around the world. In a statement, CBCC executive secretary Rev Khrotso Mero said that the “so-called divine revelation pertaining to COVID-19 vaccines” in circulation purportedly issued by “Eastern Zion Hospital Healing Ministry, Pfütsero,” had drawn the attention of the council. In this regard, CBCC said it was obliged to issue a statement so as to create awareness among the believers that such kind of unfounded and false prophecies were very much

not there. And since there are no mandis, farmers do not get better price for their produce and incur losses,” one of the visiting farmers pointed out. They also raised concern that private players will exploit farmers under the new farm laws since they were not entitled to pay any taxes. They alleged that farmers would be compelled to sell their produce at a lesser price under the new laws. Abhilash Rajkhowa from Assam said the government says it would remove the Agricultural Produce Market Committees (APMCs) and farmers will not pay any tax. But in reality, he alleged that government markets would perish and only private parties would survive and they would exploit the farmers. (Cont’d on p-6)

contrary to the Bible and Christian faith. Since the pandemic began, CBCC claimed that churches around the world have been sincerely praying for God’s intervention and healing from this dreaded disease that claimed millions of precious lives. Therefore, it said the church believed that the vaccine that has come was indeed God’s answers to the prayers of believers, whose God is always concerned for the overall well-being of humanity, including the physical well being that was part of the kingdom of God. As the church believes that health is a fundamental human right, the council said it was the moral obligation of the church to ensure that each and every individual have the opportunity to live a healthier and fuller life, “which is the will of God”. Health was also the key to economic growth

NEW DELHI, JAN 17 (IANS): A total of 447 Adverse Events Following Immunisation (AEFI) have been reported in the last two days of the massive inoculation drive against Covid-19 that is now underway in the country. Of them, three cases were serious in nature and required hospitalisation, the Union Health Ministry said on Sunday. The three cases occurred at different hospitals cum vaccination centres, the ministry added. “One has been discharged from Northern Railway Hospital Delhi within 24 hours. One has been discharged from AIIMS Delhi. One is under observation in AIIMS Rishikesh and is fine,” the Health and Family Welfare Ministry said. Meanwhile, as many as 2,24,311 beneficiaries have received doses of Covid vaccines in 553 sessions of vaccination till Sunday held across the country, the ministry added. IANS earlier reported that a 22-year-old security guard at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi, was admitted in the ICU after he developed an allergic reaction here following inoculation a day ago. The guard had suffered headache, rash, respiratory distress, and tachycardia. However, the ministry missed the serious adverse event the Delhi government recorded in its list on Saturday where a healthcare worker of NDMC Charak Pallika Hospital

for a developing country like India and vaccination formed the bedrock of public health, it stressed. Although the people may have doubt and have apprehension on the efficacy of the vaccines initially, CBCC said the church always believes that any kind of vaccination attested by World Health Organisation and approved by government can never be against the will of God. “In any case, vaccination has nothing to do with salvation and do not have any biblical basis. A vaccine does not get to decide and cancel the work of Christ on the cross,” it added. Recalling that even in recent past similar prophecies emerged from the same group claiming that Aadhaar card and rubella vaccines were against the will of God and attract the “Beast marks”, the council said these were also then clarified and condemned out right by it in 2018.

had to be hospitalised post inoculation in the hospital. The healthcare worker was, however, discharged after few hours of observation. The ministry also stressed that majority of the adverse event are minor in nature and may or may not be related to the vaccination process. “An adverse event following immunisation is any unexpected medical occurrence which follows immunisation. It may or may not be related to vaccine or vaccination process. Majority of AEFIs are minor in nature: pain, mild swelling at injection site, mild fever, body ache, nausea, giddiness and mild allergic reactions like rashes, etc,” it said. 4 more vaccines in different stages of trial: Apart from Covishield, the Serum Institute of India (SII) is working on four more vaccines against the novel coronavirus, according to Suresh Jadhav, executive director at one of the world’s largest vaccine manufacturers. Jadhav informed that the firm has been working on five vaccines, including the Covishield which got approval for emergency use roll-out for mass immunization drive. “For one (vaccine) we have received emergency approval, three others are in different stages of clinical studies while one is in the pre-clinical stage of the trial,” he said. The SII has partnered with Novavax Inc and Codagenix to manufacture and supply vaccines.

DIMAPUR, JAN 17 (NPN): After realising that the “Indo-Naga political conflict” was neither a military nor a domestic problem of India, NSCN (I-M) through its MIP said the government of India invited it for talks, as “the one and only authentic political organisation of the Naga people” at the highest level without condition. During talks, MIP said NSCN (I-M) leadership reiterated that Nagas and Indians came from different history and that Nagas were not asking for “ a piece of land from India” and neither “begging for sovereignty from India” since Nagas are also sovereign people. Further NSCN(I-M) said Nagas were not asking for “a flag from India or others” as “Nagas too have their own national flag” – a symbol of their “recognised unique entity and sover-

eignty”. It also said “Nagas are not praying for India for a constitution” as they too have their own constitution, called Yehzabo- the foundation of their laws”. Thus, in keeping with the Framework Agreement, NSCN(I-M) reaffirmed its commitment to solving the problem in spite of hurdles adding as “no problem is too big or too hard to solve if it is tackled through mutual trust and respect by the parties involved”. It cautioned that it would prove too costly if the problem is left to be solved by time or left to be exploded. Therefore, it said if the second chance was missed, both the government of India and NSCN “ will be answerable to the peoples of both parties and the generations to come in particular and to the peoples of the world in general.” (Full text on p-4)

Telegram or Signal? Welcome to the illusion called data security Parl panel summons FB, Twitter NEW DELHI, JAN 17 (IANS): As millions shun WhatsApp and download new chat platforms in search for a secure experience, mind you that security is nothing but an illusion and there is no guarantee that Telegram or Signal may not be hacked in the future, especially when nation-state actors with highly sophisticated tools and huge resources are on the prowl. Encryption is fundamentally flawed and once hackers get to know any vulnerability or bug in the whole data travel journey-apps, mobile operating system, public Wi-Fi, Cloud and the physical data centres -- your personal and sensitive information is always at their mercy. The Telegram development team is based in Dubai. The Telegram team had to leave Russia due to local IT regulations and has tried a number of locations

as its base, including Berlin, London and Singapore. It does not store data within the boundaries of India. Signal does not own its own data centres. The company is entirely Cloud based, which puts data at risk as cyber-attacks on Cloud-based services have increased in the recent past. In case the data is compromised, India which does not have a dedicated law on privacy or on cyber security, will not be able to do much, unlike Europe

which has a strong General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) that treats the safety of its users’ data diligently and seriously. According to Pavan Duggal, one of the nation’s top cyber law experts and a seasoned Supreme Court lawyer, if you are looking at complete and absolute security, you have to realise that security is a relative term. “What was secure yesterday is not secure today and what is secure today

will not be secure tomorrow. Blindfoldly relying upon these platforms would not suffice. There is a need for people to incorporate cyber security as a way of life,” Duggal told IANS. Be it Pegasus software attack on WhatsApp or the great Twitter crypto hacking last year that compromised accounts of people like US President-elect Joe Biden, former US President Barack Obama, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Microsoft founder Bill Gates, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos etc, people are always facing the risk of losing their data. The latest is the SolarWinds attack that has rocked the US agencies and several tech giants. It is not that the bad actors directly compromised their networks; they used a thirdparty software called Orion sold by IT management company SolarWinds to

infiltrate the systems even of the US Department of Justice (DoJ), According to leading tech policy and media consultant Prasanto K. Roy, when WhatsApp discovered the Pegasus attack, it quickly fixed the vulnerability, informed users whom it could trace the hack to, informed the relevant governments and initiated legal proceedings against the spyware’s creators in the US federal court. “Unlike WhatsApp/ Facebook, competitors Signal or Telegram are unlikely to have the resources to do any or all of these in response to a bug. At the most, they’d fix the bug,” Roy told IANS. Another big worry is that the present-day situation increasingly refers to a massive policy vacuum that exists in India in the context of protection of privacy and data.

on misuse of online news media

New Delhi, Jan 17 (Agencies): A parliamentary committee has summoned officials of Facebook and Twitter to discuss the issue of safeguarding citizens’ rights, preventing misuse of social news media platforms and women security in the digital space. The meet will be held on January 21. The summons from the Standing Committee on IT came amid a huge row over data privacy. The official agenda of the meeting circulated to the member MPs read: “Evidence of representatives of Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and to hear the views of the representatives of Facebook and Twitter on the subject ‘Safeguarding citizens’ rights and prevention of misuse of social/online news media platforms including special emphasis on women security in the digital space’. WhatsApp has announced that it will push back its new privacy policy from February 8 to May 15, after facing backlash from users. Millions have already switched to alternatives like Telegram and Signal. The matter has also gone to court, with a petition that says WhatsApp’s updated privacy policy verges on user surveillance and threatens India’s security. Reuters reported that the petition said the Facebookowned platform was jeopardising national security by sharing, transmitting and storing user data in another country with the information thus governed by foreign laws. In October, officials of both social media platforms were called before a joint parliamentary committee regarding data protection and privacy issues. K Y M C
