Farmers from Assam, Punjab in State to create awareness

447 adverse events across India post-vaccination, 3 serious: Centre

NEW DELHI, JAN 17 (AGENCIES/PTI): Agitating farmer unions on Sunday remained firm on holding a tractor rally on the Republic Day and vowed to continue their stir till the Agri laws are repealed, even as Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar urged them to discuss “alternatives” to scrapping the legislation at the next meeting scheduled for January 19. “We are prepared to sit in protest till May 2024... Our demand is that the three laws be taken back and the government provide a legal guarantee on the MSP,” Bharatiya Kisan Union leader Rakesh Tikait said. The next Lok Sabha elections in the country will be due around April-May 2024. The Supreme Court in scheduled to hear on Monday a plea of the central government, filed through the Delhi Police, seeking an injunction against the proposed tractor march or any other kind of protest

by farmers “which seeks to disrupt the gathering and celebrations” of Republic Day on January 26. Addressing the media at Singhu border protest site, union leader Yogendra Yadav said, “We will carry out a tractor parade on the Outer Ring Road in Delhi on Republic Day. The parade will be very peaceful.” “There will be no disruption of the Republic Day parade. The farmers will put up the national flag on their tractors,” he said. Stressing that the farmer unions should give up their “stubborn” stand after the apex court’s stay on the laws on January 12, Agriculture Minister Tomar said they should come for a clause by clause discussion on Tuesday. “Now that the Supreme Court has stayed the implementation of these laws, then there is no question of being stubborn,” Tomar told reporters. The government wants farmer leaders to come for a clause by clause discussion at the next meeting on January 19. Except for the demand of repealing the laws, the government is ready to consider “seriously and with an open heart” other alternatives, he said.

NEW DELHI, JAN 17 (PTI): A national association of doctors and scientists has demanded that all data pertaining to COVID-19 vaccine trials should be made public to enable scientists and healthcare workers to make informed choices regarding administration of vaccination. In a statement issued on Sunday, the Progressive Medicos and Scientists Forum said the Clinical Trial (PMSF) Phase 3 data should be evaluated in a transparent manner as and when available for India for both vaccines and the decision to grant Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) may be revisited once the Phase 3 trials are completed. “All healthcare workers should have an option for opting out without any fear, coercion or any other adverse impact on them, including linking vaccination status to air travel restrictions,” it said.

DIMAPUR, JAN 17 (NPN): Two farmers from Punjab and one from Assam have reached Nagaland to meet local farmers and make them aware about the new farm laws which, according to them, were not beneficial for the farming community. They said they reached Nagaland on Saturday to inform local farmers about the ongoing farmers’ protest in Delhi that is on since November 26, where farmers from Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh are participating and who have declared that their protest would continue till the Central government repeals the farm laws. Interacting with media persons at Hotel Saramati here on Sunday the farmers from Punjab said they wanted to create awareness about the farm laws and minimum support price (MSP), as many farmers in the country were not aware of it. Manjinder Singh Randhawa, who is from Punjab, said when they met farmers of other states, they found that they were not aware about MSP. “So we are travelling to create awareness about the farm laws,” he added. DIMAPUR, JAN 17 (NPN): Four new COVID19 positive cases were reported on Sunday-- 1 each in Dimapur, Kohima, Mokokchung and Tuensang, taking the tally to 12058. Further, the distribution across various categories include 4661 cases from the armed forces/police, 1854 returnees, 4971 traced contacts and 572 frontline workers.

Meanwhile, Health department has said that the vaccination drive would resume on Monday. P T I a d d s : I n d i a ’s COVID-19 caseload climbed to 1,05,57,985 on Sunday with 15,144 fresh infections while recoveries surged to 1,01,96,885, pushing the national recovery rate to 96.58 per cent, according to the Health Ministry data.

respected Supreme Court and Constitution of India, the trio asserted that they would not agree to the committee formed by the apex court recently as their demand for repealing the farm laws lay with the Centre. As the Centre had enacted the farm laws, therefore they said their fight was with the Central government. Explaining the disadvantages of the new farm laws, the visiting team said farmers only in Punjab and Haryana were getting MSP. “We have come to know that farmers have no knowledge about it. Farmers do not get the benefits as there are no mandis in other States. So, we are trying to create awareness. In Punjab and Haryana, there are government mandis where they sell their produce. But in other States, it is

DIMAPUR, JAN 17 (NPN): Chakhesang Baptist Church Council (CBCC) has cautioned believers against vested interest groups running misinformation campaign to derail the fight against COVID-19 and advised them not to panic or be swayed by false prophecies but continue to pray that God will use the vaccine to bring healing and protection to all people around the world. In a statement, CBCC executive secretary Rev Khrotso Mero said that the “so-called divine revelation pertaining to COVID-19 vaccines” in circulation purportedly issued by “Eastern Zion Hospital Healing Ministry, Pfütsero,” had drawn the attention of the council. In this regard, CBCC said it was obliged to issue a statement so as to create awareness among the believers that such kind of unfounded and false prophecies were very much

not there. And since there are no mandis, farmers do not get better price for their produce and incur losses,” one of the visiting farmers pointed out. They also raised concern that private players will exploit farmers under the new farm laws since they were not entitled to pay any taxes. They alleged that farmers would be compelled to sell their produce at a lesser price under the new laws. Abhilash Rajkhowa from Assam said the government says it would remove the Agricultural Produce Market Committees (APMCs) and farmers will not pay any tax. But in reality, he alleged that government markets would perish and only private parties would survive and they would exploit the farmers. (Cont’d on p-6)

contrary to the Bible and Christian faith. Since the pandemic began, CBCC claimed that churches around the world have been sincerely praying for God’s intervention and healing from this dreaded disease that claimed millions of precious lives. Therefore, it said the church believed that the vaccine that has come was indeed God’s answers to the prayers of believers, whose God is always concerned for the overall well-being of humanity, including the physical well being that was part of the kingdom of God. As the church believes that health is a fundamental human right, the council said it was the moral obligation of the church to ensure that each and every individual have the opportunity to live a healthier and fuller life, “which is the will of God”. Health was also the key to economic growth

NEW DELHI, JAN 17 (IANS): A total of 447 Adverse Events Following Immunisation (AEFI) have been reported in the last two days of the massive inoculation drive against Covid-19 that is now underway in the country. Of them, three cases were serious in nature and required hospitalisation, the Union Health Ministry said on Sunday. The three cases occurred at different hospitals cum vaccination centres, the ministry added. “One has been discharged from Northern Railway Hospital Delhi within 24 hours. One has been discharged from AIIMS Delhi. One is under observation in AIIMS Rishikesh and is fine,” the Health and Family Welfare Ministry said. Meanwhile, as many as 2,24,311 beneficiaries have received doses of Covid vaccines in 553 sessions of vaccination till Sunday held across the country, the ministry added. IANS earlier reported that a 22-year-old security guard at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi, was admitted in the ICU after he developed an allergic reaction here following inoculation a day ago. The guard had suffered headache, rash, respiratory distress, and tachycardia. However, the ministry missed the serious adverse event the Delhi government recorded in its list on Saturday where a healthcare worker of NDMC Charak Pallika Hospital

for a developing country like India and vaccination formed the bedrock of public health, it stressed. Although the people may have doubt and have apprehension on the efficacy of the vaccines initially, CBCC said the church always believes that any kind of vaccination attested by World Health Organisation and approved by government can never be against the will of God. “In any case, vaccination has nothing to do with salvation and do not have any biblical basis. A vaccine does not get to decide and cancel the work of Christ on the cross,” it added. Recalling that even in recent past similar prophecies emerged from the same group claiming that Aadhaar card and rubella vaccines were against the will of God and attract the “Beast marks”, the council said these were also then clarified and condemned out right by it in 2018.

had to be hospitalised post inoculation in the hospital. The healthcare worker was, however, discharged after few hours of observation. The ministry also stressed that majority of the adverse event are minor in nature and may or may not be related to the vaccination process. “An adverse event following immunisation is any unexpected medical occurrence which follows immunisation. It may or may not be related to vaccine or vaccination process. Majority of AEFIs are minor in nature: pain, mild swelling at injection site, mild fever, body ache, nausea, giddiness and mild allergic reactions like rashes, etc,” it said. 4 more vaccines in different stages of trial: Apart from Covishield, the Serum Institute of India (SII) is working on four more vaccines against the novel coronavirus, according to Suresh Jadhav, executive director at one of the world’s largest vaccine manufacturers. Jadhav informed that the firm has been working on five vaccines, including the Covishield which got approval for emergency use roll-out for mass immunization drive. “For one (vaccine) we have received emergency approval, three others are in different stages of clinical studies while one is in the pre-clinical stage of the trial,” he said. The SII has partnered with Novavax Inc and Codagenix to manufacture and supply vaccines.

DIMAPUR, JAN 17 (NPN): After realising that the “Indo-Naga political conflict” was neither a military nor a domestic problem of India, NSCN (I-M) through its MIP said the government of India invited it for talks, as “the one and only authentic political organisation of the Naga people” at the highest level without condition. During talks, MIP said NSCN (I-M) leadership reiterated that Nagas and Indians came from different history and that Nagas were not asking for “ a piece of land from India” and neither “begging for sovereignty from India” since Nagas are also sovereign people. Further NSCN(I-M) said Nagas were not asking for “a flag from India or others” as “Nagas too have their own national flag” – a symbol of their “recognised unique entity and sover-

eignty”. It also said “Nagas are not praying for India for a constitution” as they too have their own constitution, called Yehzabo- the foundation of their laws”. Thus, in keeping with the Framework Agreement, NSCN(I-M) reaffirmed its commitment to solving the problem in spite of hurdles adding as “no problem is too big or too hard to solve if it is tackled through mutual trust and respect by the parties involved”. It cautioned that it would prove too costly if the problem is left to be solved by time or left to be exploded. Therefore, it said if the second chance was missed, both the government of India and NSCN “ will be answerable to the peoples of both parties and the generations to come in particular and to the peoples of the world in general.” (Full text on p-4)

Telegram or Signal? Welcome to the illusion called data security Parl panel summons FB, Twitter NEW DELHI, JAN 17 (IANS): As millions shun WhatsApp and download new chat platforms in search for a secure experience, mind you that security is nothing but an illusion and there is no guarantee that Telegram or Signal may not be hacked in the future, especially when nation-state actors with highly sophisticated tools and huge resources are on the prowl. Encryption is fundamentally flawed and once hackers get to know any vulnerability or bug in the whole data travel journey-apps, mobile operating system, public Wi-Fi, Cloud and the physical data centres -- your personal and sensitive information is always at their mercy. The Telegram development team is based in Dubai. The Telegram team had to leave Russia due to local IT regulations and has tried a number of locations

as its base, including Berlin, London and Singapore. It does not store data within the boundaries of India. Signal does not own its own data centres. The company is entirely Cloud based, which puts data at risk as cyber-attacks on Cloud-based services have increased in the recent past. In case the data is compromised, India which does not have a dedicated law on privacy or on cyber security, will not be able to do much, unlike Europe

which has a strong General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) that treats the safety of its users’ data diligently and seriously. According to Pavan Duggal, one of the nation’s top cyber law experts and a seasoned Supreme Court lawyer, if you are looking at complete and absolute security, you have to realise that security is a relative term. “What was secure yesterday is not secure today and what is secure today

will not be secure tomorrow. Blindfoldly relying upon these platforms would not suffice. There is a need for people to incorporate cyber security as a way of life,” Duggal told IANS. Be it Pegasus software attack on WhatsApp or the great Twitter crypto hacking last year that compromised accounts of people like US President-elect Joe Biden, former US President Barack Obama, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Microsoft founder Bill Gates, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos etc, people are always facing the risk of losing their data. The latest is the SolarWinds attack that has rocked the US agencies and several tech giants. It is not that the bad actors directly compromised their networks; they used a thirdparty software called Orion sold by IT management company SolarWinds to

infiltrate the systems even of the US Department of Justice (DoJ), According to leading tech policy and media consultant Prasanto K. Roy, when WhatsApp discovered the Pegasus attack, it quickly fixed the vulnerability, informed users whom it could trace the hack to, informed the relevant governments and initiated legal proceedings against the spyware’s creators in the US federal court. “Unlike WhatsApp/ Facebook, competitors Signal or Telegram are unlikely to have the resources to do any or all of these in response to a bug. At the most, they’d fix the bug,” Roy told IANS. Another big worry is that the present-day situation increasingly refers to a massive policy vacuum that exists in India in the context of protection of privacy and data.

on misuse of online news media

New Delhi, Jan 17 (Agencies): A parliamentary committee has summoned officials of Facebook and Twitter to discuss the issue of safeguarding citizens’ rights, preventing misuse of social news media platforms and women security in the digital space. The meet will be held on January 21. The summons from the Standing Committee on IT came amid a huge row over data privacy. The official agenda of the meeting circulated to the member MPs read: “Evidence of representatives of Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and to hear the views of the representatives of Facebook and Twitter on the subject ‘Safeguarding citizens’ rights and prevention of misuse of social/online news media platforms including special emphasis on women security in the digital space’. WhatsApp has announced that it will push back its new privacy policy from February 8 to May 15, after facing backlash from users. Millions have already switched to alternatives like Telegram and Signal. The matter has also gone to court, with a petition that says WhatsApp’s updated privacy policy verges on user surveillance and threatens India’s security. Reuters reported that the petition said the Facebookowned platform was jeopardising national security by sharing, transmitting and storing user data in another country with the information thus governed by foreign laws. In October, officials of both social media platforms were called before a joint parliamentary committee regarding data protection and privacy issues. K Y M C

(Inset) Pijush Biswas. Tripura Congress chief’s car attacked in Bishalgarh. Agartala, Jan 17 (IANS): Tripura’s opposition Congress has called a 12 hour shutdown on Monday to protest against the alleged attack on state party President Pijush Biswas by the “BJP goons”. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) condemned the attack but urged Congress to call off its agitation. Congress’ Tripura Vice President Tapas Dey said that BJP workers, accompanied by “notorious goons”, attacked Biswas in Bishalgarh in Sepehijala district late Saturday eve-

ning. While the state party chief narrowly escaped, several party workers were injured. “The attack was done by a large number of BJP workers and the goons in presence of police. To protest the BJP attack on the state party chief, we have called a state-wide 12-hour shutdown on Monday,” Dey, accompanied by state General Secretaries Harekrishna Bhowmik, Baptu Chakraborty and Tejen Das, told the media. The Congress leaders said that FIR was lodged

on Saturday night immediately after the attack, but police yet to take any step to arrest the attackers. Biswas, a veteran lawyer, later told the media that the “BJP goons” unleashed the attack to murder him and badly damaged his car with iron rods and lathis. “The BJP led government in Tripura is not only an undemocratic government, it is also running a barbaric governance. People should go on all out protest against the BJP government,” he said. B J P ’s s t a t e c h i e f spokesman Subrata Chakraborty demanded an impartial inquiry to reveal the truth. “We urge the police to take appropriate legal action against the attackers. The probe would reveal whether it is an attack or outcome of the Congress’ internal feud. The Congress also must withdraw the strike call as it would hinder the peace and progress undertaken by the BJP government,” he said.

Guwahati, Jan 17 (PTI): Over 3,500 healthcare workers, including prominent doctors, were administered the COVID19 vaccine on the first day of the immunisation drive in Assam and the exercise was expected to pick up momentum in the next five to ten days, National Health Mission Director of the state Dr S Lakshmanan said on Sunday. The state had expected 6,500 beneficiaries to be vaccinated on the first day of the inoculation drive on Saturday, but 3,528 of the targeted people turned up, he said. “Many things had to be put in place and the system is evolving but we are sure it will gather momentum in the next five to ten days. “Many of the beneficiaries did not turn up while many others, whose names were not in the list for the first day, came to the selected sites,” Dr Lakshmanan told PTI. The rhythm of any vaccination drive picks up in 10 to 15 days and “we are reaching out to people, targeted to receive the vac-

cine, over phone. We are confident that they will come to the vaccination sites in the next few days”, he said. All efforts are being made to allay apprehension, if any, from the minds of people and prominent doctors coming forward to take the vaccine on the first day will go a long way in inspiring the beneficiaries, Dr Lakshmanan said. Meanwhile, there was no report of any adverse impact on healthcare workers after they received the shots on Saturday, he said. Sixty-five centres were set up in seven medical college hospitals and 24 district and sub-divisional medical establishments for the vaccination exercise. As many as 2.9 lakh people in Assam have been registered on the ‘CO-WIN’ portal -- an online platform for monitoring the delivery of COVID-19 vaccine. In the first phase, 1.9 lakh registered healthcare workers, designated as COVID warriors, will be administered the vaccine which will take approximately eight weeks to be completed.

ILPS guideline incomplete to protect indigenous people: JCILPS

Correspondent

IMPHAL, Jan 17: Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System (JCILPS), Manipur on Sunday reiterated its demand for rectification of the guideline of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system that was extended in Manipur a year ago. The Inner Line Permit under Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation, 1873 came into effect in Manipur from January 1, 2020, making it the fourth northeastern state after Nagaland, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh to come under the ILP regime. Even as the long pending demand of the indigenous people of the state had been fulfilled, ILP system guidelines published by the state government in its Gazette on December 31, 2019 have many loopholes. To deliberate on these loopholes, a one-day discourse on the ILP system in Manipu was

held in Imphal on Sunday. “Since the very publication of the Gazette, we have been demanding review and reification of the guidelines,” JCILPS convenor YK Dhiren told reporters on the sideline of the discussion. He alleged that the ILPS guideline was incomplete and undesirable to both the JCILPS and the people of the state. The guidelines failed to properly define who are the indigenous people, native people and permanent residents of the state. Dhiren stated that the guidelines do not feature any clause or paragraph which defines the indigenous people and native people of the state in addition to the absence of a cut off base year. “It is totally useless and will be a non-effective regulation when it comes to curbing the influx of illegal immigrants/migrants into the state,” he said. The convenor said that

the long pending demand of the indigenous people in the state to implement a law/regulation for protecting their identity, culture, language, political rights, economy and lands etc, will not be fulfilled if the ILPS was implemented without any necessary fundamental points. The ILPS guidelines do not clearly define who are the permanent residents, the convenor said and went on to contend that such vague points have raised doubts as to whether non-locals who have already entered Manipur before the implementation of ILPS will be considered as permanent residents of the state. The long pending demand demanding that no land of the indigenous people can be purchased by non-native people and restraining non-native people from utilizing the natural resources found in the areas where ILPS are being

extended without the consent/permission of the state government concerned was also absent from the guidelines, he pointed out. He stressed the need on the part of the state government to work with a strong political will and determination to curb the threat posed by the huge influx of illegal immigrants. Asserting the importance of the regulation in the state, he said that ILPS is the mechanism which will determine the fate of the indigenous people in the present and the future. He alleged that the presently extended ILP system in the state is only a travel document issued to the nonnative visiting the state and for the state to earn an income. Today’s discussion was hosted with an objective of compiling suggestions and opinions of experts in the field so that JCILPS submit a recommendation

to the state government for early review and rectification of the guidelines so that it serves the purpose of safeguarding the indigenous people of the state. Further delay in putting in place a mechanism to protect and safeguard the indigenous will give a great impact to the demography of the indigenous people of the state, he cautioned. After a thorough deliberation on the topic, JCILPS adopted a three-point resolution which included among others pressing the state government to review and rectify the ILPS guidelines to serve the purpose of protection of the indigenous people. The resolutions also comprised of including the provisions of the Manipur People’s Bill-2018 which was passed by the state Assembly in the ILPS guideline and to press the state government for setting up state population commission.

Robbing the future

and encroachments and questionable allotments of government lands inside educational institutions and those belonging to government departments across Nagaland, has caused the biggest hurdle to development which everybody wants and which all governments promises. However, when it comes to doing the right thing to promote and nurture all-round development, vested interests have ended these dreams. Such encroachments, whether legal or illegal, have been going on for many decades because of laxity on the part of authorities or due connivance of those responsible for protecting government lands. Educational institutions are being deprived of needed space for expansion while some development departments have lost most of the lands to private individuals. There were cases where even the office of the district administration have been locked up. The affected departments such as veterinary & animal husbandry in Dimapur, airport, district hospital, agriculture to name a few, are examples of how encroachments are depriving the people and their future generation of benefits. This newspaper has been highlighting the problem since 90s but the practise continues. Kohima Science College was established on September 15, 1961 by a group of visionaries, who felt the need to set up a science institute during the tumultuous times of 60s. The pioneers who had a futuristic vision formed a committee to establish among the first science colleges in the north east, such as – Dr. Neilhouzhu Kire (President); Vizol Angami (Member); J.B. Jasokie(General Secretary);Akum Imlong (Member); Keduonyu Sekhose (Organizing Secretary); Rev Haizotuo Munshi Angami (Member) and U.M. Deb (Treasurer). The college was housed in a few quarters of the present Rüzhükhrie Government Higher Secondary School (RGHSS) Kohima(erstwhile government high school Kohima established in 1941). The college shifted to the present campus in 1968 situated on a hillock, originally, measuring 200 acres. Jotsoma Villagers donated 50 acres of prime land for the college, while around 131.78 acres was procured by the government through token compensation of 0.03 paisa per square feet in 1967-68. Presently, three portions, about 50 acres altogether, have been carved out to house a Water Reservoir, Doordharshan Kendra, Kohima and Music Academy(RCEMPA). The encroachments and “unabated allotments” have been going on since the 90s, according to Jotsoma village council. Despite the decision of the High Powered Committee(HPC) on November 14,1990 headed by then H&Tech Education minister Prof.T.Chuba that college land will not be allotted to any organisation or individual in order to facilitate expansion of the college, the government itself has violated its own decision. Even past and present students, teachers and parents of students of KSC had pleaded with the government to stop all private constructions and allotments, but all in vain. These encroachments have prevented KSC from expanding and deprived it from becoming the campus of NEHU earlier then NU. The cabinet had decided to relocate the PHE water reservoir facilities and also to take back unused land earlier allotted to Regional Centre of Excellence for Music & Performing Arts(RCEMPA). The decision of the cabinet has come 30 years late but still welcome. Hopefully, the cabinet will have the political will to also act decisively against encroachments and land grab syndrome adversely affecting educational institutions and activities of departments in the interests of 20 lakh people of Nagaland.

DailyDevotion The Call of the Natural Life

When it pleased God…to reveal His Son in me… —Galatians 1:15-16 The call of God is not a call to serve Him in any particular way. My contact with the nature of God will shape my understanding of His call and will help me realize what I truly desire to do for Him. The call of God is an expression of His nature; the service which results in my life is suited to me and is an expression of my nature. The call of the natural life was stated by the apostle Paul— “When it pleased God… to reveal His Son in me, that I might preach Him [that is, purely and solemnly express Him] among the Gentiles….” Service is the overflow which pours from a life filled with love and devotion. But strictly speaking, there is no call to that. Service is what I bring to the relationship and is the reflection of my identification with the nature of God. Service becomes a natural part of my life. God brings me into the proper relationship with Himself so that I can understand His call, and then I serve Him on my own out of a motivation of absolute love. Service to God is the deliberate love-gift of a nature that has heard the call of God. Service is an expression of my nature, and God’s call is an expression of His nature. Therefore, when I receive His nature and hear His call, His divine voice resounds throughout His nature and mine and the two become one in service. The Son of God reveals Himself in me, and out of devotion to Him service becomes my everyday way of life.

Nagaland Post, Dimapur MONDAY, JANUARY 18, 2021

T

he term ‘Naga’ is a historical accidental name given by the British imperialist, which later becomes a recognized common national political nomenclature of the Nagas, who are composed of many tribes and subtribes indigenous to the common homeland called Nagaland or Nagalim. In fact, Naganess is traced from the line of a common history, common identity, common culture, common root of languages, common religion, common political will, and who have been living in the same country free and sovereign under their own government. Twist and turn of history begun when the British imperialist forces came and occupied a part of Naga territory. However, as the British were forced by the international nationalist forces to go back to their own country leaving their colonies so they left the occupied Naga areas too. Thereafter, the Indian and the Burmese expansionist forces came to occupy our territory against which the Naga people put up resistance movement for decades in defense of their territory, history, identity, culture and sovereign right at the cost

Political stand of the Nagas of more than three hundred thousand precious lives. Realizing that IndoNaga conflict is political not military or domestic problem of India, the government of India invited leaders of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN), the one and only authentic political organization of the Naga people for political talks at the highest level without any condition. Finally, government of India and NSCN as two entities engaged in a series of talks leading to the signing of a cease-fire agreement on 1st August, 1997. In the process of talks NSCN leadership stated that Nagas and Indians came from different history. The Nagas are not asking for a piece of land from India. They have their own land only to be recognized by the aggressor states. Naga are not begging for sovereignty from India. Nagas are also a sovereign people. Sovereignty is not a commodity that can be given or taken away by others. Freedom and sovereignty are inherent rights of peoples and nations. They are ingredients of a peoplehood. As your sovereignty lies with your people so also our sovereignty lies with

our people, it is not with India or Burma. A government without sovereign power is a form without content. It is sovereignty that makes and unmakes things. Sovereignty is the power to develop a people into their fullest size physically, mentally, spiritually and socially. Hence, based on universal democratic principle of sovereignty, it was mutually agreed that sovereignty lies with the people. The Nagas are not asking for a flag from India or others. Recognize it or not, the Nagas too have their own national flag. Naga flag is the symbol of their recognized unique entity and sovereignty. Nagas are not praying to India for a constitution. The Nagas too have their own constitution called Yehzabo, the foundation and source of their laws through which they have been running their own government for centuries. The concept of imperialism, colonialism and expansionism is a thing of the past. All the past empires including that of the Roman and the British were built on the debris of many nations and their independent states. People were never allowed to grow;

they were pulled by the chains of slavery and driven by the whip of blood-drunk emperors. Now this is the era of democracy where everything is decided by the will of the people. The politics of the Nagas is but to decide their future by themselves and manage their affairs by themselves without interference from others. The spirit of self-determination is greater than the command of a dictator. The spirit of co-operation and co-ordination is stronger than the force of coercion. However, we are bound to coexist with others as a unique entity in harmony with the Divine law of interdependent relationship. It should be understood that the spirit of co-existence is stronger than that of the forced union. The spirit of self-reliance is the root of all sources. The Nagas are also for the spirit that creates. The Nagas must grow in as much as they have the right to grow and the potentiality to grow. It is a proven fact that Naga people can fight like anything against the aggressors even though weak and small they may be. But now they have come forward for peaceful resolution of the

problem through dialogue. And therefore, they are committed to political talks for working out an honorable and durable solution. And that finally, the historic ‘Framework Agreement’ is signed between the government of India and NSCN in the eye of the whole world. We are pretty sure that this Framework Agreement solves the chronic problems of the Nagas and the Indians as well. This agreement will bring not only the cherished solution and genuine peace in the land, but also build the material development of the Nagas and rebuild the psychology and relation of the two peoples damaged by the bloody war. Indeed, it will be the beginning of a new relationship and a new era for the two peoples. We strongly believe that it will certainly bring a lasting solution we have been looking for. The situation in Nagaland (Nagalim) cannot be compared with that of other. We want the problem to be dealt with by the root and history is the root. We have different history. It has to be viewed from historical perspective. Apart from that there is no war situation herein Nagaland now. NSCN and government of

India have been in talks for more than two decades with an eye to hammer out solution. We don’t see room for fighting between the two parties as of now. But history says that the past agreements with the government of India could not solve the problem because they were not Naga issue-based. The government of India and NSCN has now worked out the Framework Agreement as the basis for solution. In keeping with the spirit and letter of the framework agreement NSCN is deeply committed to solving the problem in spite of hurdles here and there. We believe no problem is too big or too hard to solve if it is tackled through mutual trust and respect by the parties involved. This problem cannot be left to be solved by time or left to be exploded. That will be too costly. If this second chance is missed again, government of India and NSCN will be answerable to the peoples of both parties and the generations to come in particular and to the peoples of the world in general. Then, they cannot blame heaven and earth, but it is they who are to be blamed. MIP, NSCN/GPRN

Deadly HIV thriving unabated in the shadow of Covid-19 pandemic (From previous issue) Nagaland State AIDS Control Society (NSACS), on the line with NACO and WHO as well as with close coordination and collaboration with International and National Government agencies and development partners through different capacities has been implementing robustly at every possible step to ensure that HIV pandemic is contained and the curve is reversed. For example, under the State AIDS Control Society, awareness about HIV has reached the saturation point, every high risk or key population as well as suspected group/ individuals have been screened and tested and still counting. On the treatment aspects, in order to minimize the chances of discrimination and stigmatization while coming to avail the facilities for HIV treatment, multiple ART centers have already opened across the state districts so that facilities are made available closer to their home. Again, another pertinent issue like distance travelling across difficult topographical mountainous terrains and travelling through bad roads and difficulty to attend regularly to the facility points have been addressed through innovative patient-friendly mechanisms like creation of Differentiated Service Delivery Model (DSDM) that includes Multi Month Dispensation (MMD) for 3 months so that patient can take drugs home for 3 months instead of coming to ARTC on daily basis. Community ART Refill Groups (CARG) are being created so that Drug delivery point is brought nearer to the patients’ locality. Advantages of such innovative policies are :- a) To improve treatment adherence: Good adherence of ART intake is essential in order to suppress viral load consistently so that HIV individual becomes non-infective to partners. b) To minimize the Lost to Follow Up (LFU): LFU issue for those people who had initiated ART but failed to keep the pace due to excuses such as distance travelling, poverty, sickness and feeling of discrimination and stigmatization are to some extent solved. These are the potential group of people who would spread and create an artificial epidemic of HIV. c) To minimize the financial and economic burden of the family of people living with HIV (PLHIVs) and also to maximize the savings for livelihoods. As mentioned above, Nagaland state being a small state with very less population unfortunately, for the wrong reason, tops nationally in overall HIV prevalence rate in the country. Now we have entered into multipronged real-time warfare with so many pandemics among which HIV remains as formidable above all other pandemics as its causation involves not only the virus but Reader’s note: Articles

SC to hear pleas on farm laws today

Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 13 (PTI): A day ahead of the final phase of local body polls in Kerala, the opposition UDF and the BJP on Sunday moved the State ElectionCommission against Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s announcement of free COVID-19 vaccine, contending it violated the model code of conduct. The ruling CPI(M)-led LDF dismissed the charge as ‘childish’ and said Vijayan was only answering a question from reporters and also that its manifesto included the free vaccine assurance. Vijayan had on Saturday said COVID-19 vaccine will be made available free of cost to all people in Kerala. “No one will be charged for the vaccine. This is the stand of the government,” he had told reporters in Kannur. Elections to the local bodies in the state are being held in three phases with the four northern districts going for voting on Monday in the final phase. The first and second phases were held on December 8 and 10 respectively. Counting of votes polled in the elections, being held months ahead of the assembly polls likely in

April-May 2021, would be on December 16. The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) convener M M Hassan said the front moved the SEC as the Chief Minister’s announcement was a violation of the model code, given that four districts are going to the polls on Monday. “There was no urgency to make such an announcement,” he told reporters. Union Minister of State and BJP leader V Muraleedharan claimed desperation was “driving the Communists in Kerala”, adding the announcementundermined the sanctity of the election process. “The free #COVID19 vaccine announcement made by @ VijayanPinarayinot only violates Code of Conduct but undermines the sanctity of the election process. “The par ty, which went on a propaganda spree over #COVID19 containment couldn’t even wait for #LSGPolls to get over? Shame! @CMOKerala must be booked for violation of MCC,” Muraleedharan tweeted. Senior Congress leader K C Joseph filed an online complaint with the SEC. BJP state chief K

Surendran, in his complaint, alleged the Chief Minister was trying to woo voters through such announcements and it was a violation of the model code. The Left Democratic Front (LDF) asked the Congress and the BJP to make clear their stand whether they accept or reject free vaccine. “The news reports suggest that the vaccine can cost up to Rs 1,000 per person. The Prime Minister has not yet made it clear that the vaccine will be provided free of cost to all the people of the country. “It is in that context that the Chief Minister said that the vaccine will be given for free in Kerala as an answer to a question posed by a scribe,” the LDF said in a statement. It also said the free vaccine was mentioned in the LDF manifesto and the leader of the front talking about it was not in violation of any code of conduct. LDF convener and CPI(M) state secretary incharge A. Vijayaraghavan told reporters at Thrissur that the CM’s statement was part ofthe ongoing COVID19 treatment procedure in the state.

the BJP leader said Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy should respond to the remarks made by the police chief. He said it was unfortunate that instead of taking action against those involved in the attacks on temples, false cases were being booked against the BJP cadres. He found fault with the DGP’s statement and said no action was taken against the burning of ancient chariot at Antarvedi, desecration

at Ramateertha temple and attacks on several other temples but the police chief announced booking of cases against the BJP leaders. He said the officials enumerating properties of temples should also undertake the exercise in cases of churches in the state. The BJP leader demanded an immediate halt to religious conversions in the state. He said the government was acting with the intention to weaken

West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee had on Saturday expressed her dissatisfaction over “inadequate” supplies of COVID19 vaccines to the state for the programme. According to a state government official, Bengal was supposed to receive over 10 lakh vaccines in the first phase, but have got 6.89 lakh doses so far. Around 15,707 people were administered the first dose of the COVID 19 vaccine in the state on Saturday. The ruling party in the state accused the BJP of creating a controversy over the vaccination programme. “The Centre is not adequately supplying COVID vaccines to West Bengal. It is keeping control over the supplies. If needed, the state government will bear the cost of administering the vaccine to every person in the state,” TMC secretarygeneral Partha Chatterjee said on Sunday.

New Delhi, Jan 17 (IANS): The Congress on Sunday questioned the procurement of Covid vaccines, alleging that the government has procured the vaccines at inflated prices despite the manufacturers claiming they would supply the vaccines without seeking profit. Congress General Secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala, addressing a press conference, said, “Why should the Modi government pay Rs 95 per dose more to Bharat Biotech for a vaccine that has been developed with the expertise and experience of scientists of government-run ICMR and pay more for a vaccine that has only been tested on 755 individuals and is yet to be cleared after phase-3 trials?” The Congress leader said the price of such a vaccine must be cheaper than AstraZeneca-Serum Institute of India’s Covishield. “Why is the price of the vaccine at Rs 1,000 per dose in the open market?” he asked. Surjewala said, “’Covishield’ is an AstraZeneca vaccine manufactured by Serum Institute of India.

Kolkata, Jan 17 (PTI): The BJP on Sunday alleged that several TMC leaders in West Bengal were administered COVID-19 vaccines meant for healthcare personnel and frontline workers, resulting in a shortfall of doses in the state. Several TMC leaders, including two MLAs, were among the people who received the COVID-19 vaccine in Purba Bardhaman district on Saturday, the opening day of the nationwide vaccination programme. Many healthcare workers in the state had alleged that they could not get the jab though they were asked to come for it. “The vaccines sent by the central government are for healthcare staffers, police personnel and other frontline workers who are serving the society in the pandemic situation. Nearly 3.5 crore vials were dispatched by the Centre across the country. These doses are not meant for political leaders. “If these vaccines were taken by some TMC leaders, there would be a shortfall,” BJP state unit president Dilip Ghosh told reporters. Some TMC leaders are so scared of their lives that

Union Lokshakti, filed an affidavit requesting the top court to remove the remaining three members of the committee and select people who can do the job “on the basis of mutual harmony”. The farmers’ body said the principle of natural justice is going to be violated as those appointed to the four-member committee “have already supported these laws”. It has also sought dismissal of a plea of the central government, filed though the Delhi Police, seeking an injunction against the proposed tractor march on January 26. Thousands of farmers, mainly from Punjab, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh, are protesting at various border points of Delhi for over a month now against the three laws -- the Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, and the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act.

PM flags off 8 trains to Statue of Unity in Gujarat Farmers from Assam, Punjab in State to ...

New Delhi, Jan 17 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday flagged off eight trains connecting major destinations in various states of the country with the Statue of Unity in Gurjarat’s Kevadiya, via video-conferencing. The eight trains will connect Kevadiya to Varanasi, Dadar, Ahmedabad, Delhi’s Hazrat Nizamuddin, Rewa, Chennai and Pratapnagar. During the programme, the Prime Minister also inaugurated several other railway projects - new station buildings in Kevadiya, Dabhoi and Chandod. While addressing the audience, the Prime Minister said the train connectivity will be beneficial for tourists coming to see the Statue of Unity in Kevadiya as well as it will also help in changing the lives of the tribal community of the region. “The connectivity will bring new opportunities for jobs and self-employment,” said the Prime Minister, adding “one lakh tourists will visit Kevadiya everyday after improvement in connectivity”. “One of the trains flagged off for Kevadiya today originates at Puratchi Thalaivar Dr MG Ramachandran Central Rail-

Now Kevadiya has transformed into a complete family package with all amenities. Attractions here include, grand Statue of Unity, Sardar Sarovar, vast Sardar Patel Zoological Park, Arogya Van and Jungle Safari and Poshan Park.” Modi said Kevadia also has Glow Garden, Ekta Cruise and water sports and that due to increasing tourism, Adivasi youth is getting employment and local people are getting modern amenities. The Prime Minister also talked about the Kevadiya Station which has been developed with growing tourism in mind, mentioning “it has Tribal Art Gallery and Viewing Gallery from where Statue of Unity can be glimpsed”. Modi said many routes including AhmedabadKevadiya Janshatabdi will have attractive ‘Vista-Dome Coaches’.

(From p-1) He demanded that MSP should be legalized all over the country and APMCs should be created in all States across the country so that living standards of the farmers could be raised. The visiting farmers said the Central government was not ready to repeal the farm laws and talking about amendments which, they asserted, the farmers could not accept. During the meetings with the government, they alleged that farmers are only harassed and asked to provide sugges-

tions for amendments. The farmers from Punjab, who are protesting the three farm laws, have now embarked on a phase-wise tour to different parts of the country to create awareness about the dangers of the new laws. Since November, the farmers from Punjab and Haryana are demanding repeal of the three farm laws, which were passed by Parliament last year. The visiting farmers said they would tour the entire Northeast and then proceed to the South, adding that they would also be having a meeting at Guwahati.

Nitish under pressure in NDA, should return to Grand Alliance: Congress

Patna, Jan 17 (PTI): The Congress on Sunday claimed that Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar appeared to be under “a lot of pressure” in the BJP-led NDA, and suggested that he consider returning to the Grand Alliance and “freely” work for the development of the state. A statement to the effect was made by Congress Legislature Party leader Ajeet Sharma, though it was promptly dismissed as being “not official” by the RJD, which helms the five-party opposition coalition. Sharma made the remark referring to the muchtelevised quarrel between Kumar and journalists here last week when the chief

minister, known for his prim conduct, let his guard down and gave vent to his frustration at being rankled over a high-profile murder case. “Nitish Kumar is never known for such behaviour. We all know that. He is obviously under a lot of pressure in the NDA. It is well-known that he is under pressure to give up the allimportant home portfolio, which he has been keeping with himself,” the Congress leader said. Nearly a month ago, former Union minister Sanjay Paswan, a known detractor of Kumar in the BJP, had suggested that he give up the Home portfolio, since it was “too demanding” for the 69-year-old. Paswan had, however, quali-

fied his statement clarifying he was not insisting that the department, which controls the police, be given to the BJP and that Kumar could choose a “more energetic” colleague from his JD(U) for the job. The NDA in Bihar at present comprises four parties, including smaller allies HAM and VIP. Sharma, who represents Bhagalpur in the assembly, added “the Grand Alliance is Nitish Kumar’s old home. He will be able to freely work for the state’s progress if he chooses to return”. The Grand Alliance had come into being ahead of the 2015 assembly elections when Kumar had joined hands with his arch rival, RJD supremo Lalu Prasad.

Nagaland Post, Dimapur MONDAY, JANUARY 18, 2021

Biden ropes in 20 Indian-Americans to his adm UK invites PM Modi for G7 summit WASHINGTON, JAN 17 (PTI): US President-elect Joe Biden has nominated at least 20 Indian-Americans, including 13 women, to key positions in his incoming administration, a record for the small ethnic community that constitutes one per cent of America’s population. As many as 17 of them, including Neera Tanden who has been nominated as the Director of Management and Budget, would be part of the Biden administration in the powerful White House complex. The January 20th inauguration, the 59th in all, where Biden, 78, would be sworn in as the 46th President of the United States is already historic in the making as for the first time ever a woman, Kamala Harris, would be sworn as the VicePresident of the country. Harris, 56, is also the first ever Indian-origin and African-American to be sworn in as the Vice President of the United States. It is also for the first time ever that so many Indian-Americans have been roped into a presidential administration ever before the inauguration. Biden, a Democrat, is still quite far away from filling all the positions in his administra-

tion.

Topping the list is Tanden, who has been nominated as Director of the White House Office of Management and Budget and Dr Vivek Murthy, who has been nominated as the US Surgeon General. Vanita Gupta has been nominated as Associate Attorney General Department of Justice, and on Saturday, Biden nominated former foreign service official Uzra Zeya as the Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy and Human Rights. “The dedication that the Indian-American community has shown to public service over the years has been recognised in a big

way at the very start of this administration! I am particularly pleased that the overwhelming majority are women. Our community has truly arrived in serving the nation,” Indiaspora founder M R Rangaswami told PTI. Mala Adiga has been appointed as Policy Director to the future First Lady Dr Jill Biden and Garima Verma would be the Digital Director of the Office of the First Lady, while Sabrina Singh has been named as the White House Deputy Press Secretary. For the first time, the Indian-Americans nominated for Biden administration include two who trace their roots to Kashmir:

Aisha Shah, who has been named as Partnership Manager at the White House Office of Digital Strategy and Sameera Fazili, who would occupy the key position of Deputy Director at the US National Economic Council (NEC) in the White House. White House National Economic Council also has another Indian-American, Bharat Ramamurti, as Deputy Director. Gautam Raghavan, who served at the White House in the previous Obama administration returns to the White House as Deputy Director in Office of Presidential Personnel. Among Biden’s inner circle is his top confidant for years Vinay Reddy, who has been named as Director Speechwriting. Young Vedant Patel is all set to occupy a seat in the White House lower press, behind the briefing room, as Assistant Press Secretary to the President. He is only the third-ever Indian American to be part of the White House press shop. Three Indian-Americans have made their way to the crucial National Security Council of the White House, thus leaving a permanent imprint on the country’s foreign policy and

national security. T h e y a r e Ta r u n Chhabra: Senior Director for Technology and National Security, Sumona Guha, Senior Director for South Asia, Shanthi Kalathil: Coordinator for Democracy and Human Rights. Sonia Aggarwal has been named Senior Advisor for Climate Policy and Innovation in the Office of the Domestic Climate Policy at the White House and Vidur Sharma has been appointed as Policy Advisor for Testing for the White House COVID-19 Response Team. Two Indian-American women have been appointed to the Office of the White House Counsel: Neha Gupta as Associate Counsel and Reema Shah as Deputy Associate Counsel. Also, for the first time in any administration, the White House would have three other South Asians in key positions -- Pakistani-American Ali Zaidi as Deputy National Climate Advisor White House; Sri Lankan American Rohini Kosoglu as Domestic Policy Advisor to the Vice President and Bangladeshi-American Zayn Siddique: Senior Advisor to the White House Deputy Chief of Staff.

NEW DELHI/LONDON, JAN 17 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been invited by his UK counterpart Boris Johnson to attend the G7 summit in the UK as a guest in June this year. The summit will be held in England’s Cornwall region from June 11 to 13. Last year, US President Donald Trump had extended an invite to Prime Minister Modi for an expanded G7 meeting to discuss China. On Sunday, an official statement issued by the British High Commission in New Delhi said that Prime Minister Johnson will use the G7 presidency to unite leading democracies to help the world build back better from coronavirus and create a greener, fairer and more prosperous future. The G7 - UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the US - along with the EU is the only forum where the world’s most influential and open societies and advanced economies come together for close-knit discussions. The UK has also invited heads of Australia and South Korea to attend as guest countries to deepen the expertise and experience around the table. The

statement said that Prime Minister Johnson’s ambition is to use the G7 to intensify cooperation between the world’s democratic and technologically advanced nations. Between them the 10 leaders represent over 60 per cent of people living in democracies around the world. Describing the G7 as the most prominent group of democratic countries, Johnson said it has long been the catalyst for decisive international action to tackle the greatest challenges we face. “From cancelling developing world debt to our universal condemnation of Russia’s annexation of Crimea, the world has looked to the G7 to apply our shared values and diplomatic might to create a more open and prosperous planet,” he said. Coronavirus, he said is “doubtless the most destruc-

tive force we have seen for generations and the greatest test of the modern world order we have experienced. It is only right that we approach the challenge of building back better by uniting with a spirit of openness to create a better future.” The statement said that as “the pharmacy of the world, India already supplies more than 50 per cent of the world’s vaccines, and the UK and India have worked closely together throughout the pandemic.” Recalling that the UK was the first P5 member to support a permanent UNSC seat for India and the first G7 member to invite India to a G7 summit in 2005, the UK government said that as the current BRICS President and G20 President in 2023, India will play a key role in driving multilateral cooperation around the world.

India fight back through Washington and Thakur; cut Aussie lead to 33 runs

Washington Sundar

BRISBANE, JAN 17 (PTI): Fighting back through debutant Washington Sundar and Shardul Thakur, India scored 336 in their first innings to cut Australia’s lead to just 33 on day three of the series-deciding fourth Test here on Sunday. Washington (62) and Thakur (67) added 123 runs for the seventh wicket after India lost four wickets. In the six overs that Australia had to negotiate before stumps, the hosts scored 21 in their second innings with openers David Warner (20) and Marcus

Harris (1) hardly looking troubled by the Indian bowlers Australia’s overall lead stands at 54 runs. Resuming at 62 for two, Indian skipper Ajinkya Rahane (37) was watchful till he went for a flashy drive off Mitchell Starc and ended up getting caught in the slip cordon. Before his dismissal, Cheteshwar Pujara (25) fell to a peach of a delivery off Josh Hazlewood in the opening session. In the second session, India lost Mayank Agarwal (38) and young Rishabh Pant

Shardul Thakur

(23) and innings seemed to be falling apart but Washington and Thakur resisted the Australian attack with aplomb. Thakur’s combative knock ended when Pat Cummins went through his gates while Washington was dismissed by Starc in the final session. Brief Scores: Australia 1st innings: 369 and 21 for no loss in 6 overs. India 1st innings: 336 all out in 111.4 overs. (S Thakur 67, W Sundar 62, R Sharma 44; J Hazlewood 5/57, M Starc 2/88).

Kevin Durant and debutant James FC Goa hold ATK Mohun Bagan 1-1 in ISL NE utd beat Harden star in Brooklyn Nets win Jamshedpur 2-1

NEW YORK, JAN 17 (AGENCIES): Kevin Durant and debutant James Harden starred as the Brooklyn Nets claimed their third consecutive win with a 122115 victory over the Orlando Magic. Durant scored a season-high 42 points to set a new franchise record of at least 25 points in nine straight matches. Harden, who joined from the Houston Rockets this week, added a 32point triple-double in his first appearance. However, Kyrie Irving was missing for a sixth game for personal reasons. Irving was fined $50,000 (£37,000) by the NBA on Friday after attending a crowded indoor party without wearing a mask. Harden moved to the Nets from Houston as part of an initial three-team deal involving the Cleveland Cavaliers. That became a fourteam deal on Saturday when further moves involving the Indiana Pacers were officially announced. Nets guard Caris LeVert - origi-

nally announced by the Nets as moving to Houston - has now joined the Pacers, who have sent two-time All Star Victor Oladipo to Houston. However, Indiana say LeVert will be sidelined indefinitely after a small mass was found on his left kidney during a medical examination. The outfit said their new signing will have further tests. Elsewhere, DeMar DeRozan scored 24 points as the San Antonio Spurs secured a 103-91 home win over the Houston Rockets. The Detroit Pistons

earned their first away win of the campaign with a 120-100 victory over the Miami Heat, as Jerami Grant scored 29 points. Norman Powell made six three-pointers as the Toronto Raptors beat the Charlotte Hornets 116-113, while Ja Morant returned from an eight-game absence to score 17 points as the Memphis Grizzlies edged past the Philadelphia 76ers 106-104. Damian Lillard sunk 36 points as the Portland Trail Blazers overcame the Atlanta Hawks 112-106.

PANAJI/VASCO, JAN 17 (AGENCIES): FC Goa continued their ascendancy in the Indian Super League after a slow start to the season with a hard fought 1-1 draw against the mighty ATK Mohun Bagan at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium at Fatorda on Sunday. A stunning free-kick from Edu Garcia in the 75th minute had given Bagan the lead but substitute Ishan Pandita struck in the 85th minute to steal a point and stretch their unbeaten run to five matches. The Gaurs have now earned ten points from losing positions. For Bagan, it was an opportunity missed to trim the gap to Mumbai City and they are now five points behind the Islanders. Goa head coach Juan Ferrando made the big call of leaving the league top-scorer Igor Angulo on the bench as he fielded the same eleven which beat Jamshedpur FC. This saw Jorge Mendoza who scored twice against the Red Miners take up a similar false number nine position up front yet again. As for Bagan, it was all about

how they approached this game after the painful defeat against Mumbai. The Kolkata outfit who took a very defensive approach against the Islanders in the last game decided to press the Goan side who play similar type of possession based play. They tested the Goan defence twice in the first minute itself as Edu had a go at Naveen Kumar’s goal in quick succession. The first real chance of the game fell to Bagan full-back Prabir Das in the 18th minute when he

drilled a shot at Naveen who dived low to save it. Bagan came agonisingly close when their left-back Subhasish Bose’s header from a corner hit the woodwork and was inches away from going in. FC Goa enjoyed the majority of possession but they failed to create clearcut chances as both teams cancelled each other out. In the second half, Bagan kept pressing Goa but everytime the Gaurs broke out from the pressure, they looked dangerous going forward. Their right-

back Seriton Fernandes went on a rampaging run down the right flank and after seeing Arindam off his line, the fullback swept a ball over him. Bagan managed to break the deadlock in the 75th minute when they won a free-kick. Krishna was fouled just outside the box by Goa defender James Donachie. Edu stepped up and curled it into the top corner with surgical precision as they continued their trend of scoring decisive goals in the second half after going goalless in first.

NorthEast United got off to a good start under new head coach Khalid Jamil with a 2-1 win over Jamshedpur FC at the Tilak Maidan Stadium on Sunday. This is NorthEast’s first win seven games. Ashutosh Mehta scored his first ISL goal in the 36th minute to put NorthEast ahead. This was also Mehta’s first goal in any league match since he scored for Aizawl under Jamil against Mohun Bagan in the 2016/17 I-League season. Substitute Deshorn Brown doubled the tally for NorthEast on his debut in the 61st minute. Jamshedpur skipper Stephen Hartley pulled one back in the 89th minute for his side but despite pressing the NorthEast defence hard in the second half, Owen Coyle’s side slumped to a third straight defeat. This was Marin’s seventh win in 16 meetings against Tai. Axelsen, meanwhile, recorded his second

consecutive tournament win with a 21-14, 21-14 win over Hong Kong’s Angus Ng Ka Long. Axelsen had earlier won the All England Open Championship in March.
