The council affirmed that it was not against the ULB elections but against the 33% women reservation issue, which it stressed needed serious deliberation for all stakeholders so that it “becomes acceptable for all.” Further, the CNTC has made a “fervent appeal” to all responsible to understand the matter and listen to the clarion call. Meanwhile, CNTC has urged all the candidates to abstain from contesting the coming elections and renounce their candidatures. KO H I M A , JA N 2 1 (NPN): Citizens of Wokha district have expressed anguish over disconnecting data services by the state government for the last four days and demanded the service to be restored immediately. Lotha Hoho general secretary, Mhondamo Ovung, told Nagaland Post that the state government was violating the Indian constitution by curbing the fundamental rights (freedom of speech and expression) of the people of Wokha district by isolating the citizens from the outside world. After violence broke out in Phek district, 144Crpc was imposed and data services was disconnected to maintain law and order situation, but why it has to be disconnected in
Wokha when the situation was peaceful, Ovung questioned. Also, a young entrepreneur from Wokha town, who runs an Internet Café, questioned the state government as to why the people of Wokha district should suffer without any convincing reason. Mhondamo Ovung said state gover nment should not impose the same treatment on the Lothas when some violence or incident took place in other districts. Deputy Commissioner (DC) Wokha, Wezope Kenya said the data services were disconnected from the district apprehending volatile situation in the district. H oweve r, D C i n formed that he has written to the state government to restore the connection soon.
D I M A P U R , JA N 2 1 (NPN): Central Nagaland Tribes Council (CNTC) has appealed to the state government to postpone the urban local bodies (ULB) elections “for the one more time and take heed to the voice of the people.” CNTC through its media cell also appealed to the Joint Action Committee on Women Reservation (JACWR) to withdraw their case, which was still pending in the Supreme Court, and to trash out whatever differences that arose and was confronting different parties with regard to the reservation issue. CNTC pointed out that the joint co-ordination committee (JCC) was formed with its endorsement on January 4, 2017 comprising of Aos, Lothas and Sumis to deal with the ULB issue and was further joined by the Angami, Chakhesang and ENPO tribes under the umbrella

The Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) at its emergency meeting on January 21 has resolved to strongly oppose the government’s decision to distribute voters’ identification slip on January 23, 2017. In a press release, the JCC described the government’s “decision” as “undemocratic process and a direct confrontation with the voice of the people.” Pointing out that it had been protesting the proposed ULB election 2017 process through democratic means, JCC said government should not “test the patience and the maturity” exercised by the civil society organisations. As resolved at a joint meeting on January 2, the Joint Coordination Committee has directed the GBs, colony chairmen, DUCCF and general public not to accept the voters slip. Further, JCC appealed to all the PLOs not to forcefully impose the ULB election process as the same was detrimental to the legitimate rights of the Nagas in general.
D imapur , J an 2 1 (NPN): In a lengthy rejoinder to the stand of various apex tribe over the issue of NM Act and 33% women reservation, the Legal Cell of the NPF asked why would its government ever take a decision (like holding civic polls) that would weaken Article 371A when in 1964, the cock party’s 12 members resigned in 1964 to pave way for talks between NNC/ FGN and government of India and in 1998 did not participate in the 1998 assembly election to pave way for political negotiation between NSCN(I-M) with the government of India?. NPF Legal Cell through its convenor Achumbemo Kikon said NPF had constituted a committee to study entire aspect of the Nagaland Municipal Act 2001 and made suggestions to its government for making some amendments. The Cell also said the government had also received some suggestions from Naga civil societies for amendments. The Cell said the government took various suggestions as received from Naga civil societies which were incorporated in the amendment by the state assembly as Nagaland Municipal (Third Amendment)
Act 2016. The Legal Cell asserted that through the comparative analysis it would clear that the misapprehensions of the people over the Municipal Act (Third Amendment) 2016 since the powers of the municipalities on levying tax on land and buildings have been “omitted by the 3rd Amendment” and curbed by the state government “to a large extent”. Thus, said NPF Legal Cell, there was no truth to speculations that everything would be taxed once the town and municipal council elects were allowed. To illustrate the point, the Legal Cell cited the collection of parking tax by KMC and DMC in town parking areas but that these tax collectors don’t intrude into private homes to collect vehicle parking tax. On the issue of women reservation, NPF Legal Cell maintained that it was as per the Indian constitution under Article 243T Clause(3) and over which the women leaders of NMA-JAC had taken the state to court which passed a judgment in favour of 33% women reservation. Despite the government’s efforts to settle the reservation issue amicably, Legal Cell said the women group were adamant and took the matter to the Supreme Court
upon which, the Court “questioned the provisions contained in Art.371A in relation to women reservation in the ULBs under Art.243T of Party IXA of the Indian constitution”. Apprehending that the court could interpret the Article 371A according to their whims and fancies, NPF Legal Cell said the government, was compelled to salvage it by going ahead with ULB election with 33% women reservation. Further the Cell felt that since elections have been called, the women group should also withdraw their case pending in the Supreme Court to “avoid any wrong interpretation of Art.371A.” The Legal Cell also maintained that the government had opted to implement Art.243T to put impetus on Art.371A by also empowerment of women as village GBs and VCM as per the Nagaland Village Council Act 1978. The NPF Legal Cell provided its comparative chart between the Nagaland Municipal Act 2001 and the Third Amendment passed by the Nagaland Legislative Assembly on November 24, 2016 and later given assent by the Governor on November 28, 2016. DIMAPUR, JAN 21 (NPN): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Nagaland unit, which launched its campaign for the ensuing urban local bodies (ULB) election on January 18 last, has started visiting wards and canvassing for votes along with the candidates on the party’s manifestoes and programmes. In a press release, BJP Nagaland general secretary (media) and spokesperson,
Jaangsillung Gonmei, said the party has released 10point manifesto for the statewide municipal and town councils election 2017. The manifesto that listed out a series of schemes has promised to maintain price control of essential commodities, ensure sanitation, effective drainage system, ensure regular supply of public distribution system (PDS) items; clean drinking water infrastructure, urinal
sheds in cities and towns, build market sheds and car parking space, build tribal boys and girls students hostels, build footsteps in hilly cities and towns and ensure transparent and corrupt free government. Assuring to fulfil and enhance “these most demanding and immediate necessities”, the BJP Nagaland has appealed to the people to support and cast their votes for the party can-
didates overwhelmingly. According to Gonmei, the BJP state unit president, Visasolie Lhoungu, has directed party workers, party candidates and supporters to focus on election campaigns and strategies in order to come out successful. Visasolie has also directed party workers, candidates and supporters to restrain from participating in any anti-election protest meetings or rallies. Further, BJP Nagaland has appealed to the civil society organisations to refrain from causing anymore pressures on the municipal candidates. Meanwhile, the state BJP unit has clarified that since election campaigns were filled with rhetoric, the content of speeches by several individuals should not be interpreted as the party’s organisational policy statements.
D I M A P U R , JA N 2 1 (NPN): In a major bureaucratic reshuffle barely ten days before the scheduled elections to the urban and local bodies on February 1, 2017 the state government has through a notification on Saturday issued by under secretary P&AR Neikeduolie ordered the transfer and of the following 51 officers on January 21,2017. The notable change was effected with the relieving of Temjen Toy, IAS additional chief secretary to chief minister and Finance commissioner of the charge of additional chief secretary to CM and posting of I. Himato Zhimomi, commr and secretary W&H with additional charge as commr. secy. to CM.
DIMAPUR, JAN 21 (NPN): Drawing attention to the statements of Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC), hitting out at NPF and BJP allies on the issue of fielding candidates for the civic body elections, NPF media & press bureau has issued a clarification. NPF said elections to the ULBs in Nagaland were unduly delayed and that the government took the decision to hold the polls after having made every possible effort to erase any doubt, whatsoever, confronting the citizens. It was made amply clear that the decision to hold the elections was all for the betterment of the people and the state, it said. Surprisingly, NPF said, NPCC had been left with no agenda of value to present to the people, other than to beat around in frustration, targeting the NPF-led DAN government and also accusing the NPF and BJP for taking
part in the ULB elections. NPF also hit out at NPCC leaders-- K.L. Chishi, former CM and convener selection committee for ULB election Dimapur unit and NPCC president K. Therie, saying their statements published in the media were conflicting and contradictory to each other. While Chishi was quoted to have said that all four Congress candidates who filed nominations for DMC withdrew their candidatures, to respect the will of the people, NPF said K. Therie, had on January 20 appealed to all urban voters to vote for the “few braveheart Congress nominees” and Independent candidates left in the ULB elections. Having failed to garner any tangible support of the electorate to contest the ULB polls, NPF said NPCC in its attempt to mislead the public for political gain has made a laughing stock of themselves in the eyes of the people.
Shutter-down at Wokha town on Jan 23 D I M A P U R , JA N 2 1 (NPN): Lotha Hoho Joint Action Committee (LHJAC) during a meeting on January 21 at town hall, Wokha has decided that there would be shutter down in Wokha town on January 23, 2017. In a press release, Lotha Hoho Joint Action Committee convenor, R. Nchumbemo Ezung and member secretary, James Tungoe, however, stated that public and vehicular traffic movement would not be restricted. Further, the committee stated that at Saturday’s meeting, the candidates for Urban Local Bodies (ULB) election from Longsa and Wokha villages had given their assurance not to contest the forthcoming election slated to be held from February 1.
The signatories said that all contending candidates would consult with respective wards and offer mass resignation. At the meeting, it also firmly decided that not a single postal ballot paper vote/election duty certificate (EDC) would be cast. In the event postal ballot paper vote/EDC was cast by any individual, the LH joint action committee has cautioned to take stern action on the defaulting party. It may be mentioned that in Wokha village, there are 12 candidates (4 BJP, 7 NPF, 1 Independent) and 4 candidates (3 BJP and 1 NPF) in Longsa village. Maintaining that all have decided to go in for mass resignation, the Lotha Hoho said, “therefore, nil candidates in Wokha.” K Y M C

Militants cannot dictate government, says Ibobi Manipur celebrates 45th statehood day
Correspondent
IMPHAL, Jan 21: Not all people are supporting militants or their frontal organizations and people are fed up with these elements, Manipur chief minister O Ibobi Singh said Saturday. Addressing at the 45th Statehood Day at old Secretariat hall, the chief minister alleged that some militant groups and civil society organizations are making efforts to take people to the direction they wish. However under any circumstances, his government will not go by their dictate, Ibobi asserted. “I am not challenging them but it is true that people yearn for peace and development,” Ibobi said, and added that peaceful atmosphere will pave the way for speedy develop-
ment of the state. He also urged militants operating in both hills and valley to shun violence and come to the dialogue table to resolve issues amicably. “Every problem can be resolved through dialogue. Do come to the negotiating table. It may take time to implement but all their demands can be considered if it is within the purview of the state subject,” Singh said. The state government has always opened its door for reasonable dialogues through democratic ways, he added. Singh also highlighted the achievements made by the state after it attained statehood on January 21 in 1972. He said that the state has moved forward in various fields in the last few decades. Developments are taking place and will go as
it is an unending process. “Manipur, despite being a small state in comparison to other larger states of the country, has achieved admirable achievements in several priority sectors, he said. Despite the fund constraints, the state had managed to take up developmental projects particularly in the health sector, said Singh. Deputy chief minister Gaikhangam who presided over the function said that government is making efforts to make Manipur at par with other advanced states of the country. Asserting that January 21 was a day to remember, he remembered the then prime minister of the country Indira Gandhi who declared Manipur as full-fledged state of the country along with Tripura and Meghalaya.
Inter-state forum seeks Centre’s Students stare at homelessness intervention to stop erosion GUWAHATI, Jan 21 Seijosa, Jan 21 (PTI): An inter-state people’s forum has sought the Centre’s intervention to stop largescale erosion by the Pakke river, which had caused huge loss of property and crops last year, at Seijosa in Arunachal Pradesh that border’s Assam’s Biswanath district. The Inter-State Brahmaputra Tributaries Basin Affected People’s Forum, a joint committee from Seijosa in East Kameng district in Arunachal and Itakhola in Biswanath district of Assam, submitted a memorandum to Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju seeking the Centre’s intervention. The Forum has sought sanction of flood embankment and river canalisation projects as immediate steps to halt the havoc caused by the river. The Pakke river has varied water flow of three cubic metre per second (cumec) in the lean season to as high as 300 cumec during monsoon. Climate change combined with rise in population on its bank and catchment area has resulted in incidents of flooding and erosion, the sources said. The Forum’s President
Techi Hemo told PTI that every monsoon, public infrastructures and premium agricultural lands are damaged either due to river bank erosion or flooding. The situation is further aggravated due to the presence of an irrigation project barrage in Assam on the immediate downstream of the Assam-Arunachal border, Hemo claimed. The presence of this barrage obstructs the smooth flow of debris during floods and it results in backwater swelling at the upstream, he said. Any breach would change the course of the river towards the left bank and Balijuri, Itakhola, Sootea, Jamugurihat areas of Assam including railway lines, NH 15 and Pakke-SeijosaItakhola NEC road would be badly affected, Hemo claimed. To mitigate the situation there is a need to construct a three km guide wall on the immediate upstream left bank of the barrage to prevent floodwater breach along the low lying natural bank, he said. River training and canalisation for three km at the upstream of the barrage will prevent meandering and braiding of the river, Hemo added.

(Agencies): Anxious board examinees who live in the Bamunimaidam area of the city have been spending sleepless nights ever since the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) decided to remove settlers from land belonging to it. The railway authorities have already sent eviction notices to hundreds of families living in Bamunimaidam, Bhaskar Nagar and the greater Pandu areas of the city and students could become the unforeseen target of the expulsion drive. The actual demolition of houses was supposed to begin on Friday but did not for some reason. “I feel this is the saddest time of my life. My father was brought up in this locality (Shitalabari) of Bamunimaidam. I am hurt that the railways slapped an eviction notice on us a few days ago. How can we vacate our house, that too only a few weeks ahead of my Class XII boards?” wondered Sahjad Sheikh, a student of Guwahati College.

Tura, Jan 21: The ruling BJP is yet to decide of stitching a pre-poll alliance to fight against the ruling Congress government in Meghalaya. “We have been working like visiting guests here. But now, BJP has come here to stay. Hereafter, BJP is not going to be a visiting guest to Garo Hills. It is going to be a party of the people of Garo Hills,” BJP national general secretary in-charge Northeast and Jammu & Kashmir Ram Madhav told journalists here. He also made it clear that the North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA), a front led by the BJP, and which includes several regional parties, from the region, is a “development alliance”. Madhav was here in Tura, the headquarters of the Garo Hills region. In the 60-member Meghalaya House, the Garo Hills region comprises of 24 Assembly segments while the remaining are in the KhasiJaintia Hills. The BJP leader who inaugurated the BJP’s
regional office here, urged party workers to “work hard” for the remaining months in the run up to the Assembly polls, which is slated to be held next year. “When elections come we will decide (about alliances). When we decide, we will go by your (party workers) opinion. We will seek your views. Do not stop working now, and strengthen the party with a singular objective that Meghalaya should see a government that is ready to travel with PM Narendra Modi shoulder to shoulder,” Madhav said. The BJP national general secretary said that the party is working hard to improve its electoral prospects in the state. “We thought we needed to have a government in the state that is in sync with the Prime Minister’s government in Delhi. Unfortunately, the present state government here led by Mukul Sangma has acquired the notoriety of being a corrupt and an inefficient government. Meghalaya deserves much better,” he added.

The three, alongside another Indian LeT operative, were caught at the Indo-Bangladesh border in Petrapole of North 24 Parganas district while trying to sneak into India in 2007. However, one of the Indian ultras fled while being taken to Mumbai for investigation. The Additional District and Sessions Judge of Bangaon sub-divisional fast track court 1 Binoy Kumar Pathak gave the death sentence to Mohammed Younis and Mohammed Abdullah - both residents of Karachi - and Indian citizen Mohammed Muzaffar Ahmed for waging war against India. The court last Monday pronounced them as guilty under sections 121 (Waging, or attempting to wage war, or abetting waging of war, against India), 121 A (Conspiracy to commit offences punishable by section 121).

India, UAE discuss trade, strategic partnership NEW DELHI, JAN 21 (Agencies): India and UAE held their first strategic dialogue Friday ahead of Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and deputy supreme commander of the armed forces of UAE Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s visit to India next week. Sheikh Mohamed will be the chief guest at the Republic Day celebrations on January 26. During the meeting on Friday, according to a statement by MEA, the two sides discussed a number of issues ranging from cooperation in the areas of trade and investments to expanding the bilateral cooperation to new areas under the strategic partnership. These new areas include energy
Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan security and renewable energy, defence and security, electronics and information technology and space. “The meeting provided a timely opportunity to prepare for the forthcoming State visit of the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi as the Chief Guest at the Republic Day celebrations, 2017. The two sides agreed on a number of new initiatives
to further strengthen the bilateral cooperation and on signing of fresh instruments of cooperation,” said the statement. Issues related to counter-terrorism were also discussed in the dialogue. Terrorism remains a focus area for the two countries even though UAE recently denied reports in the Indian electronic media that it had seized Indian fugitive Dawood Ibrahim’s property worth Rs 15,000 crore. The meeting was cochaired by MJ Akbar, MoS for external affairs and Anwar Gargash, MoS in ministry of foreign affairs of UAE. The two sides were represented by strong delegations drawn from a number of relevant ministries and departments.
Modi for his support to jallikattu, an emotive issue which triggered mass protests across the state. “On behalf of the government and people of Tamil Nadu, I thank you for all your support and assistance in enabling jallikattu to be held in Tamil Nadu once again during the Pongal season, upholding the culture and tradition of the people of Tamil Nadu,” he wrote to Modi in a letter. Recalling his interaction with the Prime Minister on January 19 on the issue, Panneerselvam said the Tamil Nadu government had issued an Ordinance, enabling the conduct of the bull-taming sport, after obtaining the prior instructions of the President as envisaged under Article 213 of the Constitution. “The Ordinance was promulgated on Saturday by the government of Tamil Nadu and jallikattu is to be conducted with customary fervour all over the state with all the necessary safeguards,” he said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said the Central gvernment was committed to the progress of Tamil Nadu. “Central Government is fully committed to the progress of Tamil Nadu and will always work to ensure the state scales new avenues of progress,” said Modi said in a tweet. He also said that the efforts are being made to fulfill the cultural aspirations of Tamil people. PM Modi’s comments came a day after the Centre approved a draft Ordinance by the Tamil Nadu government to make an exception for bulls in the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. The government had also requested the Supreme Court for delaying its judgment on the legality of Jallikattu, citing ‘huge unrest’ in the state. In a request to the apex court bench led by Justice Dipak Misra, Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi said that there were “immense problems” in the state due to the interim ban Proud of the rich on Jallikattu and that the culture of TN: PM Modi circumstances warranted Amid massive protests delaying the judgment at in support of Jallikattu, least by a week.
NEW DELHI, JAN 21 (Agencies): Pakistan authorities today released Indian soldier Chandu Chavan, who inadvertently had crossed the border last year. Chavan was returned at 2.30 PM via Wagah Border in Punjab, Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in an official statement. He will be debriefed and a special medical check-up will be carried out. Chavan, a 22-year-old soldier from 37 Rashtriya Rifles, had mistakenly crossed the de-factor border in Kashmir hours after India’s surgical strikes+ on terrorist bases across the LoC. Chavan belongs to Borvihir village in Dhule district of Maharashtra. On January 12, Union minister of state for defence Subhash Bhamre said that Pakistan has given assurance that Chavan will be released after inquiry. Meanwhile, Pakistan said it was releasing Chavan in a “goodwill gesture”. “As a gesture of goodwill and in continuation of our efforts to maintain peace and tranquility along LOC, Sepoy Chandu
Chandu Babulal Chavan Babulal Chavan has been convinced to return to his own country and will be handed over to Indian authorities at Wagha Border on humanitarian grounds,” Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement. Indian soldier had deserted his post at the LoC due to his grievances of maltreatment against his commanders, the satement said. “He wilfully crossed the border on September 29 and surrendered himself to Pakistan army.” His grandmother suffered a cardiac arrest and died after the family was informed that he was captured by the Pakistan army.
Warning signals put up at 140 accident-prone spots NEW DELHI, JAN 21 ( Ag e n c i e s ) : A c t i n g swiftly, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and other highway owning agencies have rectified about a 100 stretches where fatal accidents often happen and have installed immediate cautionary signals including flash lights at another 140 spots. The highway ministry has identified a total of 789 black spots. While the actual plan is to rectify these spots and stretches by taking cor-
rective engineering measures the ministry had directed all agencies to immediately put warning signals to caution drivers when they approach such spots. Ministry officials said work is in progress to install immediate cautionary signals and signage on 52 stretches. The agencies have installed blinking solar signals at the beginning and the end of every such stretch and even rumble strips have been laid to compel drivers to slow down.

The Triumph of Trump
A
t the January 20,2017 inaugural ceremony of Donald Trump as the 45th president of the United States, faith played prominently, not like previous inaugural ceremonies. The ceremony was sombre yet impressive. The focus was not on the normally expected grandeur and pomp but a reminder of the great responsibility for the man who was to be sworn-in as the head of the government of the world’s number one super power. Trump’s religiously rich ceremony was notable for a president whose personal faith wasn’t a prominent part of his campaign. Trump has forged a powerful partnership with evangelical Christian leaders and promised to revive the Christian tradition in America which has been challenged and literally elbowed out by liberal politicians and judges. However, on a personal note, Trump is not known to be a conventional practitioner of the Christian faith. However, that judgement on somebody else’s faith in God and spirituality is best left to be seen. For Trump, a man who was not an embodiment of being a follower of the Christian faith, his attempt to reassert the primacy of the biblical tenet despite his not too flattering lifestyle, has the support of Christian evangelicals, including Catholics and Jews etc. Trump invited six faith leaders to take part in Friday’s swearing-in ceremony, surpassing the standard set by the last few presidents. “The last seven presidential inaugurations, since the elder Bush’s in 1989, have had one or two members of the clergy offering prayers and readings,” Pew Research Center reported. “They are friends and friendly critics, political outsiders and usual suspects; among them, the first clergywoman, the first Hispanic evangelical Christian and the first prosperity gospel preachers to speak at a presidential inauguration,” the article noted. None of the six was Presbyterian, Trump’s denomination. Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the archbishop of New York and two evangelicals -Rev. Samuel Rodriguez, senior pastor at New Season Christian Worship Center in Sacramento, California, and president of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference and Pastor Paula White, a televangelist and pastor of the New Destiny Christian Center in Apopka, Florida. The second group of religious leaders took the stage after Trump’s speech. Rabbi Marvin Hier, dean and founder of the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles, Franklin Graham, son of famed evangelist Billy Graham, read from 1 Timothy 2 and Bishop Wayne T. Jackson, a prosperity gospel preacher and leader of Great Faith Ministries International in Detroit, Michigan, shared the final benediction. Trump was sworn in with two Bibles, the Lincoln Bible and his family Bible.Even as Trump was to be inaugurated as the 45th president of the USA, thousands of Democratic Party supporters took to the streets to spoil the party. The protest orchestrated by Democratic Party leaders, feminists, African-Americans, immigrants etc have been ably supported by the mainstream liberal American media including the Washington establishment. Trump’s candidature as the Republican nominee was shocking but when he won against the much touted and favoured female who was to have become America’s first woman president-Hillary Clinton- it numbed the Democratic Party, the liberals, immigrants and the establishment. What Trump achieved was a victory of an anti-establishment movement which is now resonating across Europe. That is why liberals across the western hemisphere hate Donald Trump
DailyDevotion Recall What God Remembers Thus says the Lord: “I remember…the kindness of your youth…” —Jeremiah 2:2 Am I as spontaneously kind to God as I used to be, or am I only expecting God to be kind to me? Does everything in my life fill His heart with gladness, or do I constantly complain because things don’t seem to be going my way? A person who has forgotten what God treasures will not be filled with joy. It is wonderful to remember that Jesus Christ has needs which we can meet— “Give Me a drink” (John 4:7). How much kindness have I shown Him in the past week? Has my life been a good reflection on His reputation? God is saying to His people, “You are not in love with Me now, but I remember a time when you were.” He says, “I remember…the love of your betrothal…” (Jeremiah 2:2). Am I as filled to overflowing with love for Jesus Christ as I was in the beginning, when I went out of my way to prove my devotion to Him? Does He ever find me pondering the time when I cared only for Him? Is that where I am now, or have I chosen man’s wisdom over true love for Him? Am I so in love with Him that I take no thought for where He might lead me? Or am I watching to see how much respect I get as I measure how much service I should give Him? As I recall what God remembers about me, I may also begin to realize that He is not what He used to be to me. When this happens, I should allow the shame and humiliation it creates in my life, because it will bring godly sorrow, and “godly sorrow produces repentance…” (2 Corinthians 7:10).

Post-mortem
The DEMONetary Reform?
W
e’ve spilt a lot of ink covering the most disruptive economic event of 2016 and the various possible outcomes of the whole demonetisation drive... But two central questions keep recurring: 1. Does cash really support the existence of a parallel economy? 2. How much cash is really needed in an economy? Let’s address the first question first. Take the example of Japan - where more than 80% of all transactions are in cash, yet there is almost no parallel economy. This perhaps is because of their tax system, which taxes most working individuals at pretty low rates! (Note that rates are high, but post the deductions, in comparison with similar wages in India, they are effectively low.) Clearly, cash does not necessarily cause a parallel economy. Cash is merely a means by which a parallel economy may come into existence, but blaming cash-based transactions for the existence of a parallel economy is wrongheaded. This leads to our second question: How much cash really is necessary for an economy? The cash to GDP ratio in the US is around 8%. In India, it’s around 12%. Now, you might be tempted to argue that the US has an infrastructure that better supports a digital economy. But note that around 40% of transactions in the US are in cash. Furthermore, the US dollar is the world’s base currency, meaning it is more widespread in terms of both location and users. Perhaps this indicates that cash levels in the Indian economy had exceeded the right balance, and thus cash was serving purposes other than legitimate buy and sell transactions. Even so, is this enough to justify the unleashing of the demon of demonetisation?
We don’t quite know. What we do know is the demonetisation drive has given impetus to a digital economy. And the government is leaving no stone unturned to promote cashless transactions. But let us remind you, a large part of the Indian population is still outside the banking system. SBI chief Arundhati Bhattacharya too raised various concerns on this front recently. The disparity in the country is wide, and the gap between the accessibility to services and delivery of them won’t be easily filled. Taking all these aspects into account, would it not make more sense for the government to align its vision of curtailing black money with a better tax structure and further reforms, rather than a cashless society? SBI has one of the largest share of point of sale transactions in the country. It has the widest reach. And if there is any bank in the country that can make a real difference towards the cashless drive in hinterlands, it is SBI. So, Ms Bhattacharya’s comment that there is a long way before Indian economy goes cashless is not unfounded. Data from the SBI EcoWrap has all the proof. According to SBI, the size of digital transactions (both PoS and mobile) in the country need to go up multi-fold before India can even think of becoming cashless. Most banks are moving in that direction. The urban banks will be able to achieve their targets faster. But for a bank like SBI, which is a true reflection of India’s financial inclusion, this will take time. Before 8th of November 2016, when was the last time you worried if the ATM will shell out cash? When was the last time you worried if your bank was safe enough for fixed deposits? And did the thought of any Indian bank going the Lehman way ever
cross your mind? The governance of India’s financial stability has been rock solid. For years! Never after the 1991 balance of payment crisis did we come across such a dire scenario. And generations of Indians after that have taken the economy’s resilienece to shocks for granted. All thanks to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). It was the only financial regulator globally heaped with praises post 2008 subprime crisis. Jim Rogers famously wished that RBI should have been the US’ central bank. Many economists recommended that past RBI governors, including Rajan, deserve nothing less than a Nobel prize. It would have been fair on our part to give the new RBI governor some benefit of doubt. After all he has had really large shoes to fill. But after a disappointing start, Governor Patel did not add any feather to his cap being a mute spectator to demonetization. More importantly, it is not just his but even the RBI’s credibility that is now being questioned. Ex-RBI governors, Dr Y.V Reddy and Dr Bimal Jalan are stalwarts in their own right. They have led the country’s financial system through some of the most trying times. Most importantly they laid the foundation for RBI becoming an institution that is revered globally. The fact that they are now questioning and defending the sanctity of RBI’s institutional image is itself sad. The performance of Indian banks, especially PSUs, is currently near historical lows. Trust in banks has taken a hit with recent instances of corruption. That the RBI is doing little to redeem itself of the shadow of incompetency at such times is doing more damage to the institution than ever before. (Bhavita Nagarani)
Khiamniungan region NSCN/GPRN stands by KTC
T
he living God has planted human being to have superiority in a specific part as no one would hold all of the earth and occupy particular territory or land by each tribe/origin or race to inherit that is suitable and fit for them. The forceful occupation in the guise of border development or other at Pongsha ITC under Khiamniungan region by erecting fencing wall by India and Burma is highly felt is totally against the will of peace loving Khiamniungan tribe in particular and Nagas in general. More than 50 years ago, the so called international border that divided Naga family by two foreign prime minister Nehru and U-no through aired survey does give no hindrance among Khiamniungan brothers of the border since time immemorial Khiamniungan live as one. There is no mountain, river or stone of border between India and Myanmar in the mindset of Khiamniungan administered by one apex body which is Khiamniungan Tribal Council (KTC) and there is no question of extra Khiamniungan body to govern all Khia-

mniungans which shares one tradition, culture, custom and one dialect. The bitter conflict between India and Naga, Burma and Naga for defence of Naga country cost thousands of innocent lives which should be a lesson for all and that was because of India and Myanmar force occupation, to shatter Naga country similar to today’s activities. After deep study of the past and present scenario, the Khiamniungan region NSCN/GPRN (IM) is compelled to oppose the activities done to divide the Khiamniungan in particular and Nagas in general through fencing wall construction. The Khiamniungan region NSCN/ GPRN stands by KTC challenging the situation at hand that no force on earth can divide or distort the history and relationship of Khiamniungan who are known by blood and flesh ancestors and shall live under KTC umbrella, no black or white Khiamniungan, no east or west Khiamniungan, so no India nor Myanmar passport in our territory. Seeking clarification from private hospitals in Nagaland
W
e mortal men whether rich or poor flock to hospital for various ailments where, doctors are considered as next to God and true that many come out joyfully but many had to answer the call of God there itself and that sad end is the destiny everyone had to face in different ways. However sadly, the poor bore the brunt of high cost at private hospitals but ultimately opted for was with the high expectation of curing their ailments or at time situation compelled them to opt for such clinic not necessarily by choice but circumstances. As such many poor are paying out through their nose with the hope of curing their sickness just to end up in financial desperation. Therefore, it may be prudent on the part of the medical fraternity of Nagaland to adopt constituted uniform rules in the interest of the Naga public. However, I unconditionally apologized that I have no much knowledge about the constituted rules of Medical Council India and Medical Council of Nagaland and only trying to fathom the logic behind therein. No wonder, this write up is based on my experience with a certain private hospital in Kohima which, I found it to be a bit obscured and invariably desirous of knowing the fact and figure how calculation and charge those fees for the patient’s confinement in their hospital in their hospitals. Well, an acquaintance was admitted to a private hospital for complain of stomach pain on 17th Jan.2017 at 5;30 p.m. and was discharged the next day 18th Jan.2017 at 3;30 p.m. that comes to 22 hours. Whereas, as per the room rent charge, maintenance charge i.e. Rs.2350x2=4700 + Rs.300x2=600/-respectively comes to totaling Rs.5300/- for 22 hours stay in that hospital which should be otherwise Rs.2650/- only. All the other charges such as doctors, nurse visiting charges, service charges,
and medicine charges are found to be fair enough to the best of my observation and belief. Thus accordingly, I’ve approached the Managing Director with a written note seeking clarification on the matter where he warmly welcome and hear me out patiently. Where according to his version; “Yes! According to hourly calculation you might be right making 24 hours a day but you see, in hotel you come in the late evening and stay put beyond checkout time 12;00 noon the next day, you’re liable to pay additional day’s charge whether you stay for 24 hours or less and yes this is what we have been doing since from the beginning where nobody complain or question on the matter but of course I don’t really know other private hospital and their calculating and the charge on their patients admitted to their clinics.” Which in other word shows that there’s no specific rules governing private hospital and thus adversely effecting the Naga public especially the rural poor for whom a thousand rupees is a big money. Well, it may seem overtone expression to many who have never encountered such a situation in their life but reasoning the prevailing universal code of conduct in this matter may enlighten them with logical conclusion. True, I never mean to demean or tarnish the good reputation of my benefactor (Private clinics) rather I wholly support their yeomen service in healthcare sector and services with modern facilities that are not available in the govt. hospitals in the state. Therefore, I ardently implore upon the private clinics to take it in the best of sense and let the Naga public know the veracity of their billing system in the truest spirit of Christianity. International Human Rights Association Nagaland
I
nternational Human Rights Association Nagaland is deeply concerned with the ongoing tumult regarding ULB elections and keeping a close watch of the entire situation. There is near-universal consensus that all individuals are entitled to certain basic rights under any circumstances. These include certain civil liberties and political rights, the most fundamental of which is the right to life and physical safety. Human rights are the articulation of the need for justice, tolerance, mutual respect, and human dignity in all of our activities. Speaking of rights allows us to express the idea that all individuals are part of the scope of morality and justice and IHRA condemns the act of violation, recently at Phek district. To protect human rights is to ensure that people receive some degree of decent, humane treatment. To violate the most basic human rights, on the other hand, is to deny individuals their fundamental moral entitlements. It is, in a sense, to treat them as if they are less than human and undeserving of respect and dignity. International humanitarian law has been enacted to preserve humanity in all circumstances, even during conflicts. Such law “creates areas of peace in the midst of conflict, imposes the principle of a common humanity, and calls for dialogue. It rules out unlimited force and seeks to limit the use of violence in the hope of maintaining the necessary conditions for a return to peace. In order to truly address human rights violations, we must strive to understand the underlying causes of these breaches. These causes have to do with underdevelopment, economic pressures, various social problems, and international conditions. Indeed, the roots of repression, discrimination, and other denials of human rights stem from deeper and more complex political, social, and economic problems. It is only by understanding and ameliorating these root causes and strengthening our acts the government and our civil society together can truly protect human rights and IHRA Nagaland appeals to each and everyone concerned to act rational and prevent any violation of Human Rights during this unrest. State PRO Nagaland, Kenny S.
Failure is the seed of growth and success
t’s no secret that our worst fear is often failure. But what if failure was actually a good thing? “Failure is success in progress,” Albert Einstein once said. The great scientist was on to something. Encountering our fears and failures prompts the most necessary changes in our lives and our businesses. Here’s why every person, and every business, needs to fail at some point -- for failure is the very seed of growth and success. 1. Failure creates extraordinary change. Failure can act as a seed for two things: a road to despair or a springboard to growth. What grows out of the initial failure is entirely up to the person who “failed.” It’s easy to become downtrodden and lose motivation when things don’t go as planned. Instead, use the failure as a
mechanism to reset your perspective, make a mental change or embark on a new, muchneeded direction. Failure is necessary to shake things up. Otherwise, we would coast along comfortably but we wouldn’t make any quantum leaps. 2. Failure builds tough skin. Failure has an effect similar to a calloused heal. It’s the protective layer we acquire from going around the block a few times and hitting a few bumps. Left soft and unprotected, we easily become injured. Failure builds a thick skin that can help anyone enter the big leagues without fear. 3. Failure keeps the ego in check. Remaining down to earth and honest is a challenge in today’s business world. When deal after deal is going through seamlessly and business is on a steep incline, it’s easy to get
a big head. With that, those experiencing constant success may even resort to dishonesty if it means not losing what they have. They become slaves to success and before realizing it, they’ll do anything to stay on top, things they would never have imagined. Partnerships and friendships are ruined. Family conflicts abound. It’s all downhill from there, maybe except for the bank account. Failure humbles us when we so desperately need to be humbled. It helps us remember where we came from and keeps us in check. 4. Failure creates “aha” moments. Failure creates the moment when something is finally seen, found or understood in a way like never before -- the “aha” moment. Why? It’s just like solving a complicated math problem. It’s tough to understand at first,
but walk away for a moment and, suddenly, something clicks. The answer just comes out of nowhere. But it’s not really coming from “nowhere.” It comes from a build up within our minds as the constricting thoughts of failure and fear expand. The expansion results in an explosive energy that breaks us out of constriction and into a highly energetic, creative state when things become clear and new insight is gained. 5. Failure propels growth as an entrepreneur. Failure prepares us for what lies ahead. Entrepreneurs come across things they didn’t know they needed to know almost every day. Failures catalyze much of this knowledge because they are unexpected. How else do we learn what we don’t know we need to know? It’s never something that can be planned. (Zach Cutler)
Reader’s Post
The darkest hours Sir,
Our whole governance system has come to a complete breakdown, wherein people do not seem to have a shoulder to lean on. Any government need to be the guardian of the people and take care of their welfare. Unfortunately, in Nagaland there seem to be no way of addressing public grievances except through protest rallies or bandh. Even these too seem to be running out of style. The issue of ULB has at the moment taken over the other underlying problems, such as backdoor appointments, corruptions in various departments and unpaid dues to government servants. People raise their voices but there is no one to hear. How long can such state of affairs continue. Nagaland is passing through its darkest hours and hopefully good sense will prevail and shine through. Toshimongba Sanglir, Padampukhuri Dimapur.

the annual meet organised by SPACE which is working to make science and astronomy popular among youngsters in India. In the asteroid search campaign, students from across the country were able to discover nearly 500 new rocks in space. However, these remained preliminary discoveries as they appeared to be asteroids but did not get confirmed because they tend to move away from their orbits. But, when the discovered asteroids remain in their orbits, it is named as a provisional discovery. “Out of the 37 asteroids discovered (provisional discovery) worldwide in 2016, 27 have been by Indian students,” Sachin Bahmba, Chairman and Managing Director-SPACE Group, told IANS. The annual meet was also addressed by former SPACE achievers who stressed on the need for research platforms and opportunities for children across
the country to excel in astronomy and science and technology. “Curiosity to explore the unknown and an opportunity provided by SPACE led me to the field of astronomy,” Aryan Mishra, a 17-year-old astronomer who discovered an asteroid in 2014, told IANS. “For children living in a developing country like India, it is not easy to dream about space and the field of astronomy. However, it is my endeavour to change the mindset of people towards this field,” added Mishra. “Do not end your doubt with nothing. Try to find out as it may lead to a huge discovery one day,” said 17-year-old Yashraj Bhardwaj. Bhardwaj, who along with his twin brother Yuvraj, is the winner of Karamveer Chakra Award. The two have 22 projects -- national and international -- as well as seven patents to their names. Through various astronomy-based outreach programmes, SPACE has managed to touch base with more than one lakh families and have educated more than 20,000 students annually, Bahmba informed. “We look forward to fruitful Indo-US ties, which can come up with new technological advancements through researches done by amateurs and the scientific community of both the countries,” he told IANS.
Cong rejects Akhilesh’s offer of 99 seats; alliance nearly over
New Delhi, Jan 21 (Agencies): The Samajwadi Party-Congress alliance which was promising to alter the political equations for Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh is in trouble. Hectic negotiations for the last few days hit a wall on Friday when both sides, off the record, called the other’s demand for more seats unreasonable. Amidst building tension, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav started talks with Congress leaders through back channels to iron out the differences since Saturday morning. At the heart of the trouble were two key issues - how many seats will each get and which seat will go to which party. By evening the talks were stalled once again. Akhilesh Yadav, who started bargaining from not more than 85 seats in the morning made the final offer by late afternoon. He has now put them all in the Congress’s court by agreeing to give 99 of the 403 seats to the Congress. But the Congress wants nothing less than 104 - it had asked for 110. The two parties had sent out all the right signals till Monday last. But when the two camps sat down for seat sharing talks trouble erupted. Senior Samajwadi Party leaders today indicated that Akhilesh Yadav who has already announced 210 candidates - some even on seats held by Congress legislators - may announce few more if talks fail as time is running out and nominations for the first phase are

his bribe remarks made at a poll rally in Goa and said if he continues to violate the model code, stern action would be taken against him and his party, including suspension or withdrawal of recognition to AAP. “...The Election Commission hereby censures you for violating...provisions of MCC (Model Code of Conduct) and
expects that you shall be more circumspect in your public utterances during election time. “You may also note that in case of similar violation of MCC in future, the Commission shall take stern action against you and your party, using all powers available to it including action under Para 16A of the Election Sym-
bols (Reservation and Allotment) Order, 1968,” it said in its order issued on Friday. Para 16A gives the poll panel power to “suspend or withdraw recognition of a recognised political party for its failure to observe Model Code of Conduct or follow lawful directions and instructions of the Commission”.
Akhilesh Yadav
ending on January 24. The chief minister is not waiting for the alliance to be through in more ways. Tomorrow, Akhilesh Yadav will be releasing his party’s manifesto in Lucknow. Sensing tie-up trouble, top Congress leaders had rushed to Lucknow. The Congress which has been reduced to player number four in Uttar Pradesh was eyeing the alliance to recover ground. While senior Samajwadi Party leaders maintain that the Congress doesn’t have the footprint strength to initially demand nearly 130 seats, the Congress says anything less will hurt the national party’s interests. Samajwadi Party sources say the alliance is not taking off as the Congress wants it to surrender some seats it had won in 2012. However, insiders say that the real tussle is over seats where minority vote holds sway. The Congress was edged out of power in Uttar Pradesh by Akhilesh Yadav’s father Mulayam Singh Yadav in 1989. The rise of ‘Mullah Mulayam’ brought the drift of minority vote to the Samajwadi Party from the Congress.
NGBF asks GBs not to attend rally D I M A P U R , JA N 2 1 (NPN): Nagaland GB Federation (NGBF) has informed the GBs not to participate in any rally, bandh or boycott in connection with the ongoing process of ULB elections as notified by the state government. In a press release, NGBF president, Sheleem Konyak and general secretary, Shikuto Zalipu, also requested the state election commission to defer the ULBs election, if possible, till the situation returned to normal and understanding took place between government and pressure groups. M e a n w h i l e, t h e NGBF has appealed to all responsible not to dilute “our unique customary practice” by imposing “unusual practices” that were not in practice from time immemorial till date. The federation stated that diluting and twisting customs and traditions for “self benefit or to mislead” would surely tarnish “our identity”, which was acknowledged by the British India government and recognized by the government of India. As a custodian of the customary law, NGBF urged the Naga people to strongly uphold customs and traditions, saying that no power/strength could separate the customs and traditions from Naga people. Further, NGBF informed all district GBs associations to maintain and follow the customs and traditions and also play the roles of fatherly figure in promoting peace and harmony.
Teenage boy kills minor; eats his flesh, drinks blood
LUDHIANA, JAN 21 (Agencies): A 16-yearold boy from Ludhiana has been detained for killing a nine-year-old boy, chopping his body into six pieces, eating the flesh and drinking the blood. Deepu Kumar had gone missing
on Monday. His beheaded body was found the next day, dumped in a vacant plot in the city’s Dugri area. Both the accused and the victim are children of migrant labourers living in the same lane.
Circumstances create terrorists: Dalai Lama
New Delhi, Jan 21 (IANS): Buddhist spiritual leader the Dalai Lama on Saturday said circumstances force one to become a terrorist and sometimes it is the believers who create trouble. “Circumstances create terrorists. They are normal people. An act of violence leads to counter-violence and it continues like a vicious circle. This leads to terrorism, the Dalai Lama said here at an event. “Sometimes believers are also trouble makers,” he said laughing. They think their religion is best, the monk said, adding that leads to problems. “We have to understand that this is not how any human problem can be solved. Peace of mind is essential as it brings good health and makes your family life better,”
Dalai Lama
“We’ve to think seriously about humanity,” he said. “Like hygiene of the body is important for good physical condition, hygiene of the emotions is very important for mental health,” he said. “We are all social animals. Hence, our happiness depends on the rest of the society. We should make more people aware about such values.”
Telangana official commits suicide after being caught taking bribe Hyderabad, Jan 21 (IANS): A government official in Telangana committed suicide on Saturday, hours after he was caught red-handed while taking a bribe, police said. The incident occurred in Nizamabad town when Venkateshwarlu, working as an engineer in the municipal corporation, jumped off his apartment. He was shifted to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed. Earlier in the day,
Anti-Corruption Bureau officials caught the engineer while taking a bribe of Rs 20,000 from a contractor. India, US must collaborate on space research: NASA scientist
New Delhi, Jan 21 (IANS): India and the US should collaborate more on space research programmes, a prominent scientist from the US space agency NASA stressed here on Saturday as he felicitated two young Indian astronomers who created history by discovering asteroids in 2010 that are now recognised by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in the US. Amanjot Singh and Sahil Wadhwa, former students of Ryan International School in Rohini, were part of the All India Asteroid Search Campaign (AIASC) conducted by New Delhi-based Science Popularisation Association of Communicators and Educators (SPACE) organisation in collaboration with the International Astronomical Search Collaboration, where they discovered the main belt asteroid numbered as 2010 PO24. “India and the US should collaborate on such r e s e a r c h p r o g r a m m e s. NASA is looking forward to invite students from across the globe to participate in their space outreach programmes,” Paul Rosen, Project Scientist, NASAISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar from NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), told IANS. “What started as an excuse for night-out with friends became a passion. It is this passion that helped me succeed,” added Singh at

(l) Public amenities including street lighting, parking lots, but shops and public conveniences (m) Regulation of slaughter houses and tanneries. From the above comparison between the provision of Article 371(A) and the Powers and Functions of the Municipal and Town Council, one can easily draw a conclusion that the ULBs would in no way encroach upon the provisions of Art. 371(A). One wonder as to why suddenly the word ‘Reservation’ has become so sensitive to us. The table below will show how reservation for women has been implemented in the various Statutory Bodies in the State where Naga women have become a part of the decision making in various village level statutory bodies. 1. Village Development Model Rules 1980 Section 4 (b) provides as follows: “the number of Women Members to be included in the Management Committee of the VDB should not be less than 1/4 of the total number of members of the Management Committee of the VDBs. 2.Nagaland Communitisation of Elementary Education Institution and Services Rules, 2002 Section 2 (h) provides as follows: “Two (2) members from village community (preferably an educationist, at least a women nominated by village community) 3. Nagaland Communitisation of Health Sub-Centres Rules, 2002 Section 2 (v) provides as follows: two persons nominated by the Mahila Swasthya Sang (MSS) from among its members. 4. Violence, protests mar Trump’s inauguration; 217 protesters held
WASHINGTON, JAN 21 (PTI): Six police officers were injured and more than 200 protesters were arrested as brick-throwing vandals torched a vehicle and damaged half-dozen stores after a series of protests marring Donald Trump’s inauguration ceremony gave way to violent street clashes here in the US. At least two police officers and another person in downtown Washington were taken to hospital after run-ins with protesters, Fire spokesman Vito Maggiolo told CNN. A c t i n g D C Po l i c e Chief Peter Newsham said the officers’ injuries were considered minor and not life threatening. About 217 protesters were arrested. A large number of protesters had gathered in the national capital since early morning yesterday to voice their anger and hold demonstrations against what they alleged were the divisive policies of the new Trump administration. A group of protesters clad as “antifascist” smashed storefronts and bus stops,

and broke windows of a limousine just blocks away from the inaugural parade route. Some also threw rocks at police manning the streets near the US Capitol. Po l i c e h a d t o u s e crowd-dispersing sprays and flash-bang devices to push back the protesters and large crowds. “Pepper spray and other control devices were used to control the criminal actors and protect persons and property,” they said. Anti-Trump protests also broke out in cities across the US, including New York, Seattle, Dallas,
Chicago and Portland, Oregon. Authorities in Seattle said one person was in critical condition at a hospital with a gunshot wound. Newsham told the American television network that the several hundred demonstrators who confronted police were outnumbered by the thousands of nonviolent protesters who had descended on the nation’s capital for Inauguration Day and Saturday’s Women’s March. “We have been pointing out all along that this is a very isolated incident, and
by and large, everything is going peacefully and a lot of folks have come to the city to enjoy this historic day, not only the Capitol but walking all around the city,” he said. The report said nine people were arrested in New York for disorderly conduct while five people were arrested at a protest in Dallas, six in Chicago. In Seattle, people threw bricks and other items at officers during a demonstration at University of Washington campus, city police said. The protests are not expected to end with the inauguration as nearly a quarter million participants are expected for the Women’s March in the nation’s capital, considered the largest protest ever following an American President’s inauguration. “We’re really trying to set a tone of resistance for the coming years,” Lacy MacAuley, a DisruptJ20 organizer, told CNN. “Donald Trump represents a shift in our politics in a dangerous, harmful, exclusionary direction. We oppose those policies of hate.”
20 killed in Pak vegetable market blast PESHAWAR, JAN 21 (PTI): At least 20 people were killed and over 50 others injured today in a powerful blast at a crowded vegetable market in northwest Pakistan’s restive Kurram Agency, officials said. The blast took place at the crowded Sabzi Mandi inside Eidgah Bazaar in Parachinar, the administrative headquarters of the agency near the Afghan border. Initial report suggests that explosives kept in a vegetable crate exploded during auction of the vegetables, killing 20 people and wounding 50 others, officials said. The injured were shifted to Parachinar headquarters hospital where there is a shortage of doctors and medical facilities. A statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said the improvised explosive device (IED) blast took place at 08:50 AM in vegetable market. “Army and FC Quick Response officials have reached the blast site and cordoned off the area. Army helicopters have been flown in for medical evacuation of the injured,” it said.
General ‘Mad Dog’ Mattis sworn in as US Defence Secy WASHINGTON, JAN 21 (AGENCIES): Retired Marine Gen. James “Mad Dog” Mattis was sworn as the Defense Secretary of the United States just hours after Donald Trump took office Friday. Mattis earned his “Mad Dog” nickname by garnering a reputation as a charismatic and tough-fighting military commander. Mattis, 66, was approved with a 98-1 vote after the presidential inauguration and then sworn in by Vice President Pence. The new Pentagon chief released a statement to U.S. troops afterward that credited not only them, but intelligence personnel as “sentinels and guardians of our nation” — rhetoric that is in line with Mattis’s past statements, but stands in contrast to the way Trump has criticized the value of U.S. intelligence in recent weeks. Mattis also pledged to work with the State Department to strengthen U.S. alliances abroad, some of which have been rattled by Trump questioning their worth. The new American Defense Secretary also vowed to strengthen the economic and military ties with

allies and “gain full value from every taxpayer dollar spent on defense”. “Every action we take will be designed to ensure our military is ready to fight today and in the future,” Mattis said yesterday in a message to department of defense soon after he was being sworn in as head of the Pentagon by the Vice President Mike Pence at the White House. “Recognising that no nation is secure without friends, we will work with the State Department to strengthen our alliances,” Mattis said. “Further, we are devoted to gaining full value from every taxpayer dollar spent on defense, thereby earning the trust of Congress and the American people,” he said.
Europe’s nationalist leaders Theresa May to meet Donald Trump next week launch year of election hopes KOBLENZ (GERMANY), JAN 21 (AGENCIES): French presidential hopeful Marine Le Pen declared Saturday that 2017 will be the “year of the awakening of the people of continental Europe” as she joined fellow nationalist leaders in Germany at the beginning of a year of high-stakes national elections. Populist parties have been surging in polls in Europe and the leaders’ mood was celebratory as they came together in support of one another, the day after Donald Trump was sworn in as U.S. president following a campaign buoyed by anti-establishment and protectionist themes. “Yesterday, a new America. Today — hello Koblenz — a new Eu-
rope!” Dutch anti-Islam leader Geert Wilders said as he opened his speech at a congress center on the banks of the Rhine river, under heavy security. “The people of the West are awakening. They are throwing off the yoke of political correctness,” he said. “This year will be the year of the people ... the year of liberation, the year of the patriotic spring.” Wilders’ anti-Islam Party of Freedom could win the largest percentage of votes in the March 15 Dutch parliamentary election. Le Pen is among top contenders in France’s April-May presidential vote. And in September, Petry’s party hopes to enter the German parliament. The meeting of the Europe of Nations and
Freedom group in the European Parliament also featured Matteo Salvini of Italy’s Northern League and Harald Vilimsky, the general secretary of Austria’s Freedom Party, which last year narrowly failed to win the country’s presidency. “We are experiencing the end of one world and the birth of another,” Le Pen said. “We are experiencing the return of nationstates.”
LONDON, JAN 21 (PTI): British Prime Minister Theresa May is expected to be the first foreign leader to meet US President Donald Trump with plans being drafted for her to fly out to Washington next week, a media report claimed today. May is likely to hold her talks with the new US President in the Oval Office on Thursday on what is likely to be a two-day visit to Theresa May Washington. “Mrs May hopes to The visit has been brought fly out to Washington DC forward after Steve Bannon, on Thursday –much earlier than previously thought.

Italy avalanche: 5 dead, 4 more survivors rescued PENNE, JAN 21 (AGENCIES): Five people have been confirmed dead at the hotel demolished by an avalanche in central Italy this week, and nine survivors have been pulled from the rubble, the national fire service said on Saturday. There were around 30 people in the Hotel Rigopiano when a tsunami of snow smashed into it on Wednesday, and around 15 are still unaccounted for. The body of one man was recovered from the shattered ruins of the hotel on Saturday morning, after those of two women were found overnight, raising the known death toll to five, fire service spokesman Luca Cari told Reuters. Four survivors - two men and two women were recovered overnight after hours of painstaking digging by firemen, who moved cautiously for fear the buried air pockets might collapse. Four children and a woman were saved on Friday, dug out from under tonnes of snow and debris in a remote valley in the Abruzzo region. The avalanche came hours after a series of tremors struck the area, which was devastated by deadly quakes last year, and had been grappling with heavy snowfall. The four-storey building was obliterated, and debris spread for hundreds of metres (yards) down the valley in the Gran Sasso park.

Mr Trump’s chief strategist, reached out to appeal for an early trip,” according to ‘The Daily Telegraph’ newspaper, which quoted government sources. The plans have been secretly worked up over the last week, with officials across UK government corridors involved in the final 48 hours before the inauguration of Trump on Friday. The new US administration has expressed an interest in reviving the close relationship enjoyed by for-
mer US President Ronald Reagan and former British PM Margaret Thatcher in the 1980s. “They are really, really keen to capture the Reagan- Thatcher idea: A new populist in the White House and a strong woman in Number 10. They want to rekindle that as soon as possible,” a government source told the newspaper. Trump was sworn-in as the 45th US President on Friday in a gala ceremony in Washington DC.
S.Korea urged to arrest Ban Kimoon’s brother SEOUL, JAN 21 (IANS): The US has urged South Korea to arrest the brother of former UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, sources inSeoul’s justice ministry revealed on Saturday. Washington asked Seoul to arrest Ban KiSang, younger sibling of Ban Ki-moon, after the US Attorney General’s Office indicted him last week for the attempted bribery of an official from the Middle East in connection with a real estate deal. The justice ministry has begun to process the request and examine applicable laws, a senior Seoul official told Yonhap News Agency. Ban’s brother, an executive in the South Korean firm Keangnam, was reportedly entrusted by the company with selling a high-rise building in Vietnam, Landmark 72, for $800 million. He reportedly hired his son (and Ban’s nephew) Joo Hyun Bahn, a broker in New York, to secure the deal. The US attorney general’s office claims that, through an intermediary, the father-son duo agreed to a $2.5 million bribe (of which they advanced around $500,000), for the official responsible for acquiring the property through a sovereign wealth fund, Efe news reported. While Bahn was arrested last week in New Jersey, Ban Ki-sang is considered a fugitive by authorities. He faces a variety of charges that could carry lengthy prison sentences. Through a statement by his spokesperson, Ban Ki-moon declared he had no knowledge of the case and hoped the procedures would be “carried out strictly and transparently” to address any concerns.

Chingmei releases single ECH organizes acoustic musical night ‘Real Men Don’t Rape’
C
hingmei Shükshuhü Phom, a young man f r o m Yo n g n y a h Hongnyü village has released his debut single ‘Real Men Don’t Rape’ in Naga music portal Indihut, on Saturday. The song, recorded at Jam Studio 11, Dimapur, carries a strong message against rape and the fear psychosis it has created in the present society. Rapping in Nagamese and English, Chingmei made sure that the message in the song was properly conveyed to the listeners. In a chat with Nagaland Post, Chingmei said, he wanted to sing in Nagamese as everyone, both young and old, could understand. He expressed his desire to make more songs based on social settings. Currently undergoing vocal, keyboard and drums training courses at Hills Praise Music Academy, Dimapur, Chingmei said he had been passionate about singing since he was young. He gave up his studies to pursue music as a profession and he also has written a
good number of songs which are yet to be released. D r aw i n g mu s i c a l inspirations from powerhouses like from Metallica, Megadeth, Pantera and Christian rock bands like Petra, Stryper and Bride, Chingmei’s list of favourites included renowned Naga artistes Methaneilie Solo Jütakhrie, Alobo Naga, Incipit, Purple Fusion, Tetseo Sisters, Jano Nyekha, Mengu Soukhrie, Divine Connection, Toxic Peace, UDX and Tali Angh. Talking about his debut single, Chingmei said, “Real Men Don’t Rape, is based on social milieu, mainly portraying the parameters of the present scenario, the harassment, persecution, rape and injustice towards womenfolk. This act compelled me to pen the song. I respect every woman like
my own mother and sisters and this song is meant to show my support towards women which is every man’s bounden duty.” He added that through the song, he wished to spread a message to the world that, mothers and sisters are beautiful creations of God and they should be loved and respected. He thanked God, his parents and siblings for being so supportive in the career he had chosen. On his future plans, Chingmei said, “I want to continue as a musician, glorigying God and fulfil the career I have chosen.” (Aneila Seyie Keretsü)

Taylor in NZ squad for Australia series India eye whitewash against England
Ko l k ata , Ja n 2 1 (PTI): The series in their grasp along with a distinct psychological edge, India would be aiming for a cleansweep to dent England’s confidence a bit more in their final ODI outing before the Champions Trophy in less than five months, here Sunday.
England have been winless in the disastrous tour so far, having been outplayed in the Test series prior to the ODIs. And it looks unlikely that the tide would turn dramatically Sunday. India’s old brigade o f Yu v r a j S i n g h a n d Mahendra Singh Dhoni,
who stepped down from limited-overs captaincy ahead of the series, turned back the clock to help the team once again out-bat England by 15 runs in the second ODI. The Eoin Morganled outfit has batted with as much verve but has fallen short everytime --
who has been struggling to get into the rhythm. With scores of one and 11 in the two ODIs, it’s high time that the team think-tank looks beyond Dhawan, especially when they have an in-for m Ajinkya Rahane warming the bench. An injury scare yesterday, which prompted Dhawan to make a trip of the hospital, could lead to a change tomorrow. The other opener K L Rahul too is yet to replicate his Test form into ODIs and has scores of eight and five in the two ODIs so far. The other Indian opener, Rohit Sharma, who is recovering from an injury will be sorely missed at this venue given that in the last match here two years ago, he had struck a world record 264. Sharma’s epic knock had powered India to 404/5 against Sri Lanka, who lost by 153 runs on November 13, 2014. The rest of the batting line-up looks set and need not be tinkered with but Kohli may look to tweak his seam attack a bit with Hardik Pandya’s bowling lacking bite.
Guardiola confirms Sergio Russia to attend IAAF Taskforce Aguero contract extension meet on membership reinstatement
Sergio Aguero
Lo n d o n, Ja n 2 1 (Agencies): Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has confirmed striker Sergio Aguero has signed a contract extension with the club. Reports suggest the Argentina international signed the deal - which ties him to City until 2020 - in 2016, but the club made
no formal announcement. Aguero has scored 18 times in all competitions this season, with Manchester City placed fifth in the Premier League table following a 4-0 defeat at Everton last weekend. Guardiola said, “He [Aguero] has already signed a contract extension. Sergio will be here until he decides not to be here. He is our best striker - we have a problem with goals so we need him. What I want is the best possible for him.” Guardiola was seen meeting Aguero at a restaurant on Thursday, but the former Barcelona boss denied reports the pair were discussing the player’s future at the Etihad.
Moscow, Jan 21 (IANS): Russia Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko and a representative of the country’s investigative committee will be attending a meeting of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Taskforce on the possible reinstatement of Russia in the global track and field body, a senior athletics official has said. Indian batsmen, however, have been ruthless as a unit and showed that a target of 350 is just a number especially when the ever-reliable Virat Kohli is on song. The biggest plus for India has been Kedar Jadhav, whose 76-ball 120 in Pune played a key role in overhauling a 351-run target. CONDOLENCE
Johannesburg, Jan 21 (Agencies): David Miller smashed 40 off 18 balls as a new-look South Africa side beat Sri Lanka by 19 runs in the first of three Twenty20 internationals. Rain shortened the match to 10 overs a side at Centurion Park and, having been put in to bat, a South Africa team featuring five debutants made 126-5. Sri Lanka were on course when they reached 73-1 in the sixth over but then lost five wickets in quick succession, and eventually finished short on 107-6. The hosts rested a number of experienced players and handed debuts to batsmen Theunis de K Y M C
Bruyn and Jon-Jon Smuts, wicketkeeper Mangaliso M o s e h l e, a l l - r o u n d e r Andile Phehlukwayo, and fast bowler Lungisani Ngidi. Openers Heino Kuhn (10) and Smuts (13) failed to build on promising starts and De Bruyn then went for 19. But Miller and captain Farhaan Behardien (31 not out from 18 balls) gave the South Africa innings some impetus with a stand of 51 for the fourth wicket in less than four overs, as Miller smashed three fours and three sixes. Opener Niroshan Dickwella (43 from 19 balls) then got Sri Lanka off to a great start before he was caught at deep midwicket off leg-spinner
Imran Tahir (2-23). And Tahir went on to remove the other opener Dhananjaya de Silva (27 from 16 balls) in the same over. The Sri Lanka innings faded from that point, with 20-year-old debutant Ngidi particularly impressive for the home side, taking 2-12 to claim player of the match honours. Sri Lanka gave a first appearance to Thikshila de Silva but he fell for a first ball duck, caught in the deep off spinner Aaron Phangiso as Sri Lanka’s challenge faltered. The second Twenty20 Inter national will be played in Johannesburg on Sunday, before the series finale in Cape Town on Wednesday.

Stubborn Swansea shock Liverpool
Liverpool’s makeshift left back James Milner (left) times his challenge to tackle Swansea’s Dutch midfielder Leroy Fer.
L o n d o n, J a n 2 1 (Agencies): Swansea moved off the bottom of the Premier League table with a shock 3-2 win over under-par Liverpool at Anfield. The win for Swansea is their first ever at Anfield, and signals what may be a turn-around in their season’s bid for survival, while the defeat sees Liverpool’s title chances take a massive blow, with the Reds next three home games against, Chelsea, Spurs and Arsenal respectively. Fernando Llorente opened the scoring for Paul Clement’s side just after the break when the Frenchman scrambled home from close-range,
after catching Liverpool from a set-piece. The travelling fans, and Llorente were in dreamland five minutes later, after the 31-yearold produced a wonderful powerful header from a precise Tom Carroll cross to fire past the helpless Simon Mignloet. Swansea’s lead was reduced three minutes later after Roberto Firmino outjumped Martin Olsson at the back-post, before the 24-year-old finished with a half-volley to square up the tie in the 69th minute. Just as it looked like the hosts were getting on top, and they would complete the usual comeback the KOP have seen time and time again,
Gylfi Sigurðsson tore up the script and dispatched his effort to hand his side a huge three points. Swansea now move out of the relegation zone, at least until the later kick-offs, while Liverpool remain third, knowing a Chelsea win on Sunday will see them 10 points behind Antonio Conte’s side. The away side were content to sit men behind the ball early on and let Liverpool dominate possession and this nearly cost them in the 14th minute when Jordan Henderson found Emre Can with a wonderful ball, but the 23-year-old poorly headed wide. (Cricket Operations) after there were complaints about them having been office bearers in their respective states for more than nine years. However all the office bearers will have a short term as the Supreme Court appointed threemember administrative committee will be taking over from January 24. The administrators will certainly
take a few months to set the house in order during which they are supposed to implement the Lodha reforms, oversee the change of constitution and a smooth conduct of the elections in the parent body as well as the state. However it will be J ha r k ha n d ’s A m i ta bh , who now will get back his executive powers to convene meetings while treasurer Aniruddh will be an authorised signatory in financial matters till the administrators form the Apex Council. It is therefore expected that the convenor for Indian team’s selection for the oneoff Test against Bangladesh will be convened by Amitabh Chaudhary.
to push their luck, and were nearly undone by a spectacular Roberto Firminho acrobatic attempt after the Brazilian did well to latch on to the impressive Adam Lallana’s through ball. D e s p i t e t h e Re d s dominating the majority of the first-half, Swansea should have taken the lead in the 20th minute after new signing Carroll’s shot deflected off Dejan Lovren before hitting the post and trickling out for a corner. L ive r p o o l c a u s e d Manchester United problems from set-pieces in last week’s goalless draw, this time, the Merseysiders were on the receiving end, when Gylfi Sigurðsson’s headed attempt from an Alfie Mawson flick-on went narrowly past the post. Despite late pressure from Liver pool, an equalising goal never materialised, now the Reds will turn their attention the EFL Cup where they aim to tur n-around a one-goal deficit against Southampton at Anfield. Swansea look like a team up for the dog-fight that is relegation, and with Clement seemingly having his team playing with confidence, the Welsh outfit will look to build on their win when they face Southampton on the 31st of January.

I-League
: Shillong Lajong beat Minerva 2-1
Lajong celebrates after scoring the second goal against Minerva Punjab FC.
Shillong, Jan 21 (IANS): Local boy Rupert Nongrum and new Cameroonian striker Aser Dipanda Dicka scored a goal each as Shillong Lajong FC registered their first points with a 2-1 victory over Minerva Punjab FC here on Saturday. Loveday Okechukwu reduced the margin for Punjab moments before the final whistle. It was Shillong’s first home match of the tournament and they used their advantage to jump up to the seventh position in the points table. Lajong started with as many as eight Under-22 players and only two foreigners -- Dicka and Japanese midfielder Yuta Kinowaki -- but started strongly. Rupert scored his first I-League goal in
the 17th minute. He was later rewarded for a fine performance with the Man of the Match award. The midfielder met a well directed long ball with an outstretched right boot. Unmarked, he sped towards the edge of the opposition box after neatly collecting the ball and fired a low strike that beat Minerva goalkeeper Arshdeep Singh. Miscommunication between Dicka and captain Nim Dorjee Tamang saw Lajong miss a good chance to double the lead just five minutes later, but that really did not make much difference as they continued to pile on the pressure. A few minutes either side of the 30-minute mark Dicka had two headers just miss the mark, but he made good
on this promising display to convert a chance 10 minutes later. The second goal was scored in the 42nd minute when Minerva defender Loveday Okechukwu failed to clear the ball and the resulting skewed clearance fell nicely into the path of Dicka who did the rest. Punjab made a couple of attacking substitutions at the start of the second half and Minerva enjoyed greater ball possession, though Lajong faced up to the pressure and held off the marauding opposition. Loveday made up for his first half mistake by netting with a fierce shot in the second minute of added time to reduce Punjab’s deficit. Lajong’s next game is against Mumbai FC on January 28.
