Staff Reporter

DIMAPUR, JAN 25 (NPN): Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) on Wednesday informed that the committee has decided to defer the state-wide indefinite bandh which was reportedly scheduled to be held on January 27 after chief minister T.R. Zeliang requested the committee to wait till January 27. This was conveyed to the JCC members when they met Zeliang at Kohima on Wednesday. Chief minister also informed the members that since all the cabinet ministers were out of Kohima to attend Republic Day celebrations, the cabinet meeting would be held only after January 26. In this regard, JCC has decided not to go ahead with the indefinite bandh from January 27 but wait for the outcome of the cabinet meeting. A JCC member told Nagaland Post that chief minister informed them that the cabinet would be meeting on January 27 to take the call on whether to go ahead with the Urban

BJP candidates reiterate stand DIMAPUR, JAN 25 (NPN): Ten BJP candidates, who have filed nominations for DMC election, have reiterated that they would only forfeit their candidatures, only after other political parties including NPF do first. The candidates- Hokivi Chishi ward 19, Hokuto Zhimomi ward 22, Vikheho Zhimo ward 17, Simon Yeptho ward 23, Moa Jamir ward 16, G. Kits ward 20 and Meweu Lasuh ward 1. Ikato V. Sumi ward 7 and P. Avi Awomi ward 6- in a press hand out stated that they respect the views and decisions of the respective tribal bodies including the Joint Coordination Committee to withdraw/forfeit their candidatures. “However, forfeiting our candidatures at our own cost and win of other candidates is not acceptable”, they stated.

Candidate backs-out

Meanwhile, a woman BJP candidate, Kavili Chishi of Ward 21 on Wednesday decided to back out from the Dimapur Municipal elections citing reasons that she supported the call of the Naga civil societies. Local Bodies (ULBs) election or not. However, JCC warned that it will go ahead with the indefinite bandh starting from January 28, if the outcome of the meeting was not in their favour. Further, the committee also reiterated its appeal on the candidates to pull out of the fray by listening to the voices of the people. Here, JCC said that once when all the candidates pulled out then there would be no election and bandh. Meanwhile, at the consultative meeting convened by JCC at Dimapur on January 25, the house formed a youth organization under the banner Dimapur Naga Youth Organization. The meeting was attened by all the tribal bodies.

JCC clarifies

JCC has issued a clarification on Article 371A in response to statements by minister of school education & SCERT Yitachu and subsequently the chief minister T.R. Zeliang and other functionaries who maintained that holding elections to

ULBs was not against the customs, traditions and usages of Nagas. On Yitachu’s contention that under the constitution of India provisions of Article 371A can be implemented by the 1. central government- the president, council of ministers both houses of parliament and Supreme Court with all their machinery in Part V of the constitution; 2. the state of Nagaland- governor, state assembly, council of ministers and high court with all its machinery in Part VI of the constitution and panchayats which form Part IX of the constitution from Article 243 to 243-O and by virtue of Article 243 ‘M’(2)(a) of the state does not apply but after enactment of the Nagaland Village Area and Regional Council At 1972, the village councils are constitutionally established authority at the local self government level to implement and enforce Article 371A. 4. Municipalities which forms Part IXA of the constitution from Article 243-P to Article 243-ZG and by the Municipal and Town Coun-

cil Act 2001 with 33% women reservation(amended 2016) is constitutionally established authority in urban areas which fulfil criteria as municipal and town council; 5.cooperative societies which form Part IX 13 of the constitution . JCC reiterated that the contention of Yitachu was in contravention of the provisions as incorporated in the 16 Point Agreement at serial 8 wherein the local self government- where each tribe through the (a)village council (b) Range council and (c) Tribal council will be law making and administrative bodies to deal with matters concerning respective tribes and areas. Since Nagaland is 100% tribal and where respective tribes follow and practice their own customs and traditions since time immemorial, unlike in mainland India, JCC pointed out that there has been no practice of discrimination on the ground of sex as females were considered equal in Naga society. It said that since according to customs and traditions, males took

part in decision making, this practice cannot be changed nor be distorted for the sake of fund that was pending for municipalities. In view of 33% women reservation infringing on the customary practice, JCC said it objects to civic poll under the present context and therefore demands that the state government invite all tribe hohos and apex civil societies to hammer out a solution as per customary and traditional practices at a consultative meeting and in the interest of women. JCC asked the government not to curb public interest for the sake of money and not to project holding of civic polls as being in the interest of the people. JCC also noted that advisor urban development had disclosed that more than Rs.200 crore was kept idle in the ministry of urban development of Nagaland. JCC warned that in the event the government turned a deaf ear to its appeals for deferment of polls, the government will be held responsible for any eventualities.

In a press release, NMA president, Abeiu Meru, and secretary, Lochumbeni Humtsoe, termed as “unfortunate” that the issue of women reservation in municipal election has been “misinterpreted.” The signatories also lamented over the use of force, threats of banishment and ex-communication, including women candidates and forced withdrawal even after filling of nominations. “Such use of force in a civilized society is condemnable,” NMA said. Committee on Women Reservation (JACWR), which was formed with leaders of NMA, ENWO, Watsu Mungdang, Naga Women Hoho Dimapur (NWHD) and Tenyimi Women Organisation (TWO), demanded their constitutional rights as equal citizens as human beings under the constitution and were not confronting or challenging men. NMA therefore appealed to all tribe organizations to ensure that “we respect each other” and promote a culture of respect for the rule of law and a sense of tolerance for diverse and opposing views. NMA appealed to various organizations to ensure participation of citizens in casting their votes and extend full co-operation to the state government for smooth conduct of ULB elections with women reservation in the state. A Thanksgiving Prayer.

(In memory of our beloved Ipu Tokheho H Sema) We praise Thee dear Father God for the gift of a beautiful soul given to us to be our earthly father. For making him a family man through all the happy and sad times shared. A big heart to accommodate us all. His sense of gratitude, humour and common sense. Good health and the full long life you bestowed upon him. We praise Thee dear Father God for blessing him with your Servants, friends, acquaintances and family whom you placed at every stage of his life to help him all along life's journey. Using him as a channel of blessing to the poor, widows, orphans, and needy, and as a dear friend and loving counsellor to both young and old. For letting him be a part of your burden and vision for your church, your people, and your land. We praise Thee dear Father God for your grace granted him to receive JESUS CHRIST as his personal Lord and Saviour. To experience the joy and assurance of salvation and working of the Holy Spirit in his life. The trials and hardships that broke and moulded him into your image. The child like faith in your precious words and promises. The mid-night prayers and tears shed in true repentance in realization of your love. We praise Thee dear Father God for your faithfulness in never leaving him till the very end. Praise Thee for the blessed and peaceful home calling you granted him so graciously and to a sweet eternal rest from his long and weary travelling days. We will never cease to praise Thee for the hope of meeting again in your eternal kingdom. All Glory, Honour and Praise to GOD Almighty.

Manipur to hold free and fair election despite eco-blockade Correspondent

IMPHAL, Jan 25: The prolonged imposition of economic blockade on the national highways in Manipur will not allow disturbing, in any cost, the conduct of elections in free and fair manner. Despite the economic blockade, the elections will be conducted in free and fair manner, Manipur chief secretary O Nabakishore and chief electoral officer (CEO) Vivek Kumar Dewangan assured Wednesday. Addressing a function to celebrate 7th National Voters’ Day in Imphal City Convention Centre, the chief secretary said that state government was committed to conduct the ensuing elections in a free and fair manner. State government was coordinating the CEO office to ensure free and fair election in the state despite the prolonged imposition of economic blockade following a direction of the

Election Commission, Nabakishore added. The chief secretary opined that election was the main festivals of democracy adding that the future of the state or the country for the next five is to be decided by the people in this democratic practice. While asserting that a crucial task was ahead of the people of the state, he appealed the electors not to be influenced by money or muscle powers. He further urged the voters to carefully exercise their franchise as the future of the state have to be depended on their choice. Dewangan also said that efforts were on to ensure a free and fair election asserting that the ongoing economic blockade will not be a factor to hinder the democratic exercise in the state. Preparedness for the two-phase elections was hectically going on at all levels, he added.

Senior politicians Sharad Pawar, Murli Manohar Joshi and the late P.A. Sangma are among seven recipients of the Padma Vibhushan award, India’s second-highest civilian honour, it was announced on Wednesday. The apex student’s body of all the indigenous communities in the region passed a resolution in this regard at its emergency meeting on Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016 and said that they would oppose the move tooth and nail. “The government of India should know and understand that the Northeast is not a dumping ground of illegal migrants, whoever they may be -- Hindus or Muslims,” NESO Chairman Samuel Jyrwa said. “The northeastern region will not take the burden of illegal foreigners, who came after 1971, as per the Assam Accord,” he added. But he still managed the tenure without any controversy as he could always use his gifted sense of humour. Former prime minister, late PV Narasimha Rao once commended him for his “sagacity” in conducting the proceedings of the 11th Lok Sabha. Probe ordered into Goa’s attempted jailbreak Panaji, Jan 25 (IANS): A probe was ordered on Wednesday into the foiled jailbreak bid at South Goa’s Sada sub-jail late on Tuesday, in which one inmate died, a senior officer said. Several people, including jail guards, were injured during the attempted escape, the officer added. Speaking to reporters Additional Inspector General of Police Siddhivinayak Naik said: “Yes, a probe has been ordered into the incident.” Deputy Superintendent of Police Lawrence D’Souza said inmate Vinayak Korbatkar died due to severe stab injuries which he received in the melee. “He was declared dead on arrival at a hospital,” the officer said. Korbatkar was involved in the stabbing of another criminal, Ashpak Bengre, earlier in 2017. South Goa Collector Swapnil Naik told reporters that the incident happened on the eve of shifting prisoners to the newly constructed Colvale Central jail, 15 km north of Panaji. “The escape attempt took place after a fight broke out between two groups in the jail. They later attacked our jail guards and tried to escape from the main gate. But they were stopped by police,” Naik said.

Pranab Mukherjee “Gandhiji’s mission to wipe every tear from every eye still remains unfulfilled,” he said. He delivered a rousing message of unity, saying Indians “have to work harder because we are all equal children before our mother...Our motherland asks each of us in whatever role we play to do our duty with integrity, commitment & unflinching loyalty.” The state of India’s demo cracy

The President hailed the “breadth and depth” of India’s democracy, but added that Indians must acknowledge its systems are not perfect. More than the unison of ideas, a healthy democracy needs conformity to the values of tolerance, patience and respect for others, and these must reside in every Indian’s hearts and minds so that they have an understanding and responsible tem-

perament, he said. President Mukherjee said a wise and discerning mind is necessary for democracy to flourish. Expressing concern over disruptions in legislatures, he called for a collective effort to bring the focus back on debate and decisionmaking. He stressed the need for electoral reforms and called on the Election Commission to “take this exercise forward in consultation with political parties”. Significantly, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, too, has called for a change in the way elections are funded, and for simultaneous Assembly and Lok Sabha polls. President Mukherjee and Prime Minister Modi will attend the Republic Day parade on New Delhi’s Rajpath tomorrow. The chief guest this year is Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nayhan, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi.

CIA doc gives details on Bofors scandal

NEW DELHI JAN 25 (AGENCIES): Sweden called off a troubling probe into the Bofors scandal to prevent embarrassment to the then prime minister Rajiv Gandhi in a ‘scheme’ with India that kept payments made to middlemen secret, says a confidential assessment by the US Central Intelligence Agency that has recently been declassified. “Stockholm wanted to save Gandhi the troubles caused him (sic) by the Swedish leak and Nobel industries (the mother com-

pany) wanted to avoid a bribery indictment. The two sides cooperated therefore on a scheme to keep details of the payments secret. Stockholm eventually called off the entire bribery investigation,” a secret CIA assessment titled ‘Sweden’s Bofors Arms Scandal’ reads. The detailed assessment was conducted in April 1988, two years after India signed a $1.5-billion deal for the howitzers. The West European division of the CIA shared inputs that Sweden and India worked together and

that Bofors ‘almost certainly’ made payments to secure the howitzer deal. The recently declassified CIA records accessed by ET reveal that the US was closely following the Bofors scandal and its possible fallouts in India and Sweden. The document on the arms scandal has been heavily redacted but contains a detailed timeline of the investigations, including the fact that a national audit conducted by Stockholm indicated that $40 million was paid in commission to middlemen.

Kejriwal claims ‘revolution’ in health, education New Delhi, Jan 25 (IANS): Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday said his government had unleashed a “revolution” in the education and health sectors. In his Republic day address, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader said his government’s first budget doubled the education budget and hiked the health budget by 50 per cent. He said if all the governments in the country, including the Central government, decided to focus on education and health, development in the country would be rapid. “If children are educated well, there is no doubt they will make India proud.” The Chief Minister said the health infrastructure in Delhi was in a “bad shape” when he took charge in February 2015, with people flocking to the AIIMS and Safdarjung Hospital even for minor ailments. “In the last two years we opened Mohalla Clinics in a lot of areas where free medical care is being provided. We have been focussing on primary health care,” he said. “In the coming year, we will have 1,000 Mohalla Clinics and one will be able to find them within a radius of 2-3 kilometres.”

Unsung heroes make it to Padma list 2017 NEW DELHI, JAN 25 (AGENCIES): The 2017 Padma awards list promises to be a mix of eminent and well-known achievers as well as unsung heroes across various fields. While the big names in the shortlist include former Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Olympic silver medallist P V Sindhu and her coach P Gopichand, the lesser-known likely to be honoured are social activist Alok Sagar who once taught former RBI governor Raghuram Rajan at IIT, folk singer from Uttara Kannada’s Halakki tribe Sukri Bomma Gowda and sitar and surbahar player from Kolkata Imrat Khan. “Of the nearly 120 names cleared for Padma awards -- which are conferred in categories Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan -- around 50% could be achievers whose contributions in their respective fields of expertise or talent have not received ample recognition. The stress this year is to reward such unsung heroes,” said an officer involved with the Padma awards selection process. Former IIT Delhi professor Alok Sagar, who quit academics and started working with tribals in Hoshangabad and Betul districts of Madhya Pradesh around three decades ago, is a case in point. Said to have groomed several stu-

dents including former RBI governor Raghuram Rajan at IIT, he now lives a simple and austere life, working full-time for the tribals of Madhya Pradesh. Imrat Khan is the lesser known brother of famous sitar maestro Ustad Vilayat Khan. He has been playing both with Vilayat Khan as well as solo. Among the big names on the shortlist, Dhoni, who recently quit as captain of the Indian ODI and Twenty-Twenty cricket team, is likely to be conferred the Padma Bhushan. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2009. Sindhu, too, is in line for the Padma Bhushan, having won the Padma Shri in 2015. If her coach Gopichand, who was instrumental in grooming her to clinch the Olympic win, is also honoured, he will get the second highest civilian honour: Padma Vibhushan. The Padma awards 2017 are set to be

announced on Wednesday, coinciding with Republic Day eve.

J&K tops the list of police medals for gallantry

Jammu and Kashmir police walked away with the highest number of police medals for gallantry this year, with its personnel bagging 32 of the total 100 awards announced on Tuesday. Interestingly, one J&K officer was conferred two medals for having displayed valour “beyond his call of normal duties” in separate counter-terror operations. While all state police together bagged 78 gallantry medals, 22 gallantry medals went to the Central forces, of which CRPF alone accounted for 16. Interestingly, constables and head constables walked away with 55% of the gallantry medals, even as the list featured just one IPS officer.

NEW DELHI, JAN 25 (AGENCIES): On the eve of Republic Day, President Pranab Mukherjee said the economy may have been slowed down by demonetisation, but its transparency will improve as more and more transactions become cashless. President Mukherjee began his annual address by paying tributes to the brave soldiers and security personnel who’ve made the supreme sacrifice for the nation, on a day when gallantry medals were announced for the heroes of last year’s surgical strikes. He spoke about the importance of striving to “keep at bay (the) dark forces of terrorism,” and dealing firmly with them. The President pointed out that a fifth of Indians still live below poverty line, that the economy is yet to grow at over 10 per cent for a sustained period of time, and that the nation’s “pluralistic culture and tolerance are still being put to test by vested interests.”

Familiar bell

hat veteran BJP leader and former deputy prime minister L.K.Advani (who was instrumental in bringing up the BJP from 2 seats in the Lok Sabha to 85 in 1989) had foretold (or forewarned) in 2015 that he feared a repeat of the Emergency as “forces that can crush democracy have become stronger”. To understand what Advani meant, his interview to a national newspaper was specific that “at the present point of time” which leaves no one in doubt about who are in power at this present point of time. Advani had expressed his fears while speaking at a function to mark the 40th anniversary of the 1975 emergency declared by then prime minister Indira Gandhi. He did not see that the emergency cannot happen again and attributed the likelihood on lack of commitment by political leadership to democracy. What Advani spoke was from his heart and borne out of his decades of active politics. The emergency in 1975 was the outcome of too much power being concentrated in one hand. The emergency –like situation may have revealed itself when the prime minister Modi announced demonetisation on November 8 night that was to take effect on midnight. Demonetisation was first implemented in 1946 when the Reserve Bank of India demonetised the then circulated Rs 1,000 and Rs 10,000 notes. The government then introduced higher denomination banknotes in Rs 1000, Rs 5000 and Rs 10000 in a fresh avatar eight years later in 1954 before the Morarji Desai government demonetised these notes in 1978. Demonetization is necessary whenever there is a change of national currency. The old unit of currency must be retired and replaced with a new currency unit. There is no illegality in demonetisation as it is within the prerogative of the finance ministry and the RBI. However, demonetisation is simply about replacing certain notes that are declared as no longer valid and legal for transaction. The objective of demonetisation is thus clear but what the government has been saying about only exposes the intents and not the purposes. The objective of government’s demonetisation has been evolving depending on which audience or segment of society it is used for gaining political mileage. The opposition especially the Congress is guilty of ineffectiveness in highlighting the illegality of demonetisation. It was only Bahujan Samaj Party(BSP) chief Mayawati who hit the bulls eye by describing it as “ an undeclared economic emergency”. This narrative is undeniably befitting because the government notification authorising the demonetisation has also effectively frozen property rights by placing limits on cash withdrawals. In effect, the Modi government has interfered in the account holder’s private contractual relationship with her or his bank and suspended the individual’s constitutionally-guaranteed right to enjoy property under Article 300A of the Constitution. And it has done so in a manner that lacks legal sanction. Legally, the RBI Act does not give the Centre the power to place limits on cash withdrawals from banks. From one to the next like black money to terror money etc the government has been conducting raids at will aimed at the ‘money trail’ leading to opposition leaders. As the nation celebrates the 68th Republic Day, it is time to reflect on how institutions like RBI have become political tools.

Leave Room for God

When it pleased God… —Galatians 1:15 As servants of God, we must learn to make room for Him— to give God “elbow room.” We plan and figure and predict that this or that will happen, but we forget to make room for God to come in as He chooses. Would we be surprised if God came into our meeting or into our preaching in a way we had never expected Him to come? Do not look for God to come in a particular way, butdo look for Him. The way to make room for Him is to expect Him to come, but not in a certain way. No matter how well we may know God, the great lesson to learn is that He may break in at any minute. We tend to overlook this element of surprise, yet God never works in any other way. Suddenly—God meets our life “…when it pleased God….” Keep your life so constantly in touch with God that His surprising power can break through at any point. Live in a constant state of expectancy, and leave room for God to come in as He decides.

t is hard to believe that the government financed Khadi Board printed Prime Minister Narender Modi’s picture in the familiar pose of Mahatama Gandhi sitting behind the charkha, spinning the yarn, without PMO’s permission. Probably somebody at the lower level allowed the Board to go ahead. The furor in the public was so strong that the contradiction was inevitable. Even then PMO was not as strong as it should have been. In fact, a stern warning should have been issued there and then so that such examples of indiscretion do not go unpunished in future. This might have chastened those who, on one pretext or the other, violate the dignity of Republic, not realizing that they are insulting themselves. Only the other day, the standing of people was made mandatory when the national anthem was played. People still do not respect the order and open the doors of cinemas even

They do not seem to realize that the national anthem and the Republic’s flag are sacred because they represent the nation’s honour and sovereignty. People would have to realize themselves that no order or law can instill patriotism. It is their own feelings which should assert whenever the choice is between what benefits the nation and what benefits an individual or party. Gandhiji himself was conscious of people’s feelings. As I wrote earlier he stopped his prayer meeting when someone objected to the recitation of Quran. He resumed it only when the person concer ned withdrew his opposition. Gandhiji was, however, more successful in Kolkata where the then Chief Minister Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy had declared the Muslim League’s action plan in response to the Congress Satyagarh. The

Post-mortem

Governor’s 68th Republic Day speech My Dear Brothers and Sisters of Nagaland, good morning namaskar, Today is the 68th Republic Day of our great Nation INDIA. On 26th day of January 1950, our founding fathers declared our Nation as Pluralistic, Secular, Democratic and Republic. On this momentous occasion, I would like you all to join me in recalling the sacrifice and patriotism on which our nation has been built. On this proud day, we pay our humble salutations to those great men who gave us this strong Republic and a great Constitution. Let us all remember with great gratitude and deep reverence our Freedom Fighters, Scientists, Social Reformers, Visionary Leaders, etc. The development of our country means the development of every nook and corner of the country. Government of India under the dynamic leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modiji is laying special emphasis on development and progress of North East region. Infrastructure development, connectivity, skill education, use of natural resources and other important areas where we need to act and focus on to encourage investment and progress. The Central Government is trying hard to transform our country through a number of Welfare Schemes like Jan Dhan Yojana, Atal Insurance Yojana, Make in India,

Mudra Bank, Housing for all - ‘Pradhan Mantri Gramin Awas Yojna’, Skill India, Start Up Initiatives, Swachh Bharat Mission, Digital India, etc. And each one of us, as citizens, should strive hard for successful implementation of these welfare schemes so that there will be growth, equitable distribution of wealth and improved quality of life. We are proud that a small population of 20 lakhs Nagas have achieved 300 thousand youth as graduates empowered with education in different areas. Let our youth force empowered with skill education be the soldiers and Nodal Agents for development. The education we are receiving today often does not result in employment. Our Universities should supplement academic contents and design new curriculum as per instructions of UGC in order to cope up with changing demand by the industry and commerce. Universities have to be not only the centres of excellence and knowledge but also the centres of development and nodal agents for reaching the targeted group for welfare projects. Democracy demands it. Corruption in public life is a matter of great concern. Our Hon’ble Prime Minister and Chief Minister of our State has vowed to remove corruption from all walks of life. Demonetization was a bold and correct step in this direction. I urge upon all citizens to move forward towards

cash less economy which will be a strong deterrence against corruption. Our State has potential for all round development. We are blessed with abundant natural resources like coal, minerals, mineral oil, hydro energy, solar energy, flora and fauna, etc. Recent study reports published by scholars indicate probable deposit of precious stones and gold. It is high time we tap our own natural resources judiciously for the development of the State. Our forest is endowed with herbs and medicinal plants which need to be documented and grown as commercial crop to augment the economic standard of our agriculturists. Our Farmers/Kisans are the backbone of our society. We have to organize Co-operative movement for a better market for the agri produce. Women have an important role to pay in development of the State and country. A number of girl children in Nagaland are being sponsored in their studies with the help of well wishers under Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Scheme. E-learning facilities have been provided to as many as 28 Government Schools in Nagaland through Indian National Fellowship Centre (INFC), an NGO from Mumbai, Rotary Club of Bombay and Workhart Foundation, Mumbai. Initiative is also being taken for centenary celebration in 2018 of Lt.Dr.T.Ao, who was the Indian footballer

and a physician. Dr.T.Ao was the captain of the India national football team in the 1948 Summer Olympics, in the team’s first official game and was the flag-bearer of the Indian contingent. We are proud that birthday of great freedom fighter of North East INDIA Rani Ma Gaidinliu, a Naga, is on 26th January. WE SALUTE HER. I call upon all the Naga Political Groups to come forward for a respectable solution. Let us work in unison towards achieving Naga Peace Accord. We want peace and development. Differences in opinion should be resolved through dialogue. I am confident that we will continue our march with determination towards a glorious State and Nation. Let us rededicate ourselves with a firm resolve for peaceful and well developed Nagaland. Let brotherhood and harmony prevail, heralding a prosperous future to our State and Country. We have the potentiality to be economically developed strong State in the Union of India with the participation of 300 thousand empowered youths with University degrees and our natural wealth. Let us make Nagaland a Golden Nagaland. On this occasion of the Republic Day, I convey my greetings and best wishes to all. KUKNALIM BHARAT MATA KI JAI

admirably in a film and, as Amir Khan, director and producer, said in a message that she was brilliant. But the pressure of separatists in the Valley was so much that she had to say in a TV interview that she was ‘ashamed’ of what she done, disowning her role in the film. Her message was poignant: Girls should not follow her example as if she was telling them about the ordeals she had gone through. That means that those who are wanting to establish the separate, sovereign Islamic Republic in the Valley are far from satisfied. They know that their opponent was the Indian army. But they go on fighting to register Kashmir’s demand for independence. I found them, when I went to Srinagar, relentless. New Delhi would have to talk to the separatists and see if they could accept real autonomy within India, asking them that India would not spread itself beyond the three subjects: Foreign Affairs, Defence and Communications.

Are Naga women suppressed ?

A

re Naga women suppressed? That they need 33% reservation? I don’t feel so. The Indian government made the idea of 33% reservation for women because they know their women are a suppressed lot. India wants the world to know that it is trying to elevate the status of women in India. The Indian women are suppressed because they are aborted during pregnancy. The Indian women are suppressed because the male child is loved more than the female child. The Indian women are suppressed because the parents don’t feel they need to go to school. The Indian women are suppressed because they have restricted friends. The Indian women are suppressed because they are blamed even though they may be the victims. The Indian women are suppressed because they have to accept arranged marriage. The Indian women are suppressed because they have to pay dowry. The Indian women are suppressed because they have to keep on paying dowry. The Indian women are suppressed because they are blamed for any calamity that befalls her husband’s home. The Indian women are suppressed because they are blamed for childlessness. The Indian women are suppressed because they cannot raise a finger against the head of the home. The Indian women are suppressed because they have to show that they are a widow. The Indian women are suppressed from the womb to the tomb. The above list is long and will go on. But, it’s time to ponder whether our mothers and sisters in Nagaland are living in a better place or not. The Indian women need 33% reservation, no doubt about that. But do we also need to put our women in the same oppressed level of the women in India? If we make a graph of the suppressed women in Nagaland and India, the graph of Nagaland would be a mole-hill, and the graph of India a mountain. E. Chishi, N.L. Road, Dimapur

New Delhi, Jan 25 (IANS): The overall petroleum product consumption growth in India from April to December remained strong at 9 per cent despite a slump in diesel as the demand in petcoke emerged stronger, a Jefferies report said on Wednesday. “Overall product consumption growth in India has remained strong in nine months of FY17 at 9 per cent year-on-year despite slower diesel growth due to strength in many other products like petcoke, gasoline, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), aviation turbine fuel (ATF) and fuel oil,” the report said. Petroleum product consumption growth has remained strong though it is down slightly from last year’s high of 10.9 per cent. This is despite diesel volume growth decelerating to 3.7 per cent during April-December, from 7.5 per cent in the corresponding period the previous fiscal, it said. According to the report, the two things that stood out in AprilDecember period were that while the petcoke consumption in India overtook gasoline in tonnage terms, kerosene use was down sharply due to the government strategy, with positive implications for fuel subsidy.

might not “be built anytime soon.” Trump had promised to make “Mexico pay” for the wall, something that the Mexican government says is fanciful. Trump aides have weighed increasing border tariffs or border transit costs as one way to “make Mexico pay.”

WASHINGTON, JAN 25 (AGENCIES): Donald Trump will take a first step toward enacting his pledge to “build a wall” on the Mexican border Wednesday by issuing an executive decree. The White House said that Trump will visit the Department of Homeland Security in the afternoon, when he is expected to roll out a series of immigration-related measures. “Big day planned on NATIONAL SECURITY tomorrow. Among many other things, we will build the wall!” Trump tweeted late Tuesday. Stemming immigration to the United States was a central plank of Trump’s election campaign. His signature policy was to build a wall across the 2,000 mile (3,200 kilometer) border between the United States and Mexico. Some of the border is already fenced, but Trump has argued that a wall is needed to stop illegal immigrants entering from Latin America. Experts have voiced serious doubts about whether a wall would actually stem illegal immigration, or if it’s worth investing billions in such a project when there

are other cost effective methods of achieving similar results. But the issue has become a clarion call for the US right and far right, the core of Trump’s support. After four days in office some are wondering why the populist president’s policies have been largely indistinguishable from those of orthodox Republicans. His promised executive order may be a way to slake that thirst. Still, any action from the White House would be piecemeal, diverting only existing funds toward the project. The Republicancontrolled Congress would need to supply new money if the project is to be anywhere near completed, and Trump’s party has spent years preaching fiscal prudence. Furthermore, much of the land needed to build the wall is privately owned, implying lengthy legal proceedings, political blowback, and substantial expropriation payments. Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly even told his confirmation hearing that the border wall

WASHINGTON, JAN 25 (PTI): Nikki Haley was today overwhelmingly approved by the Senate as America’s next Ambassador to the UN, scripting history by becoming the first Indian-American to serve on a Cabinet rank position in any US presidential administration. Haley, 45, a rising Republican star, was approved by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee with wide bipartisan support, 96-4. She will replace Samantha Power. Haley turned in her resignation as South Carolina governor minutes after she was confirmed as President Donald Trump’s Cabinet pick. She is expected to be sworn in shortly. The two-term governor faced questions from Democrats over her lack of experience with global affairs but won plaudits from senators for her handling

of prickly issues like Russia and UN actions toward Israel during her confirmation hearings. She is the first woman to be confirmed to Trump’s Cabinet. Senator Bob Corker of Tennessee, the Republican chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, said Haley is a proven leader who will be a “fierce advocate” at the UN for American interests.

With this, Haley becomes the first IndianAmerican to serve in a presidential administration at a Cabinet level position. While nominating her, Trump had said, “Governor Haley has a proven track record of bringing people together regardless of background or party affiliation to move critical policies forward for the betterment of her state and our country. “She is also a proven dealmaker, and we look to be making plenty of deals. She will be a great leader representing us on the world stage,” Trump had said. Haley has already created history by becoming the first women IndianAmerican Governor of a US State. After Bobby Jindal of Louisiana, she is only the second ever IndianAmerican to be elected as

the Governor of a State. Haley would now be replaced by Lt Gov Henry McMaster as governor and will complete her term that ends in 2018. “Governor Haley appears up to the task and seems to understand this as well,” said Senator Ben Cardin, Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee as he voted to approve Haley’s nomination as the next US Ambassador to the UN. “What Governor Haley lacks in foreign policy and international affairs experience, she makes up for in capability, intelligence, and a track record of building coalitions in South Carolina,” Cardin said. Once a fierce critic of Trump, Haley in November was selected as the first woman and first minority to serve in the Trump Administration.

Pakistan female lawmaker harassed in parl KARACHI, JAN 25 (AGENCIES): A Pakistani female lawmaker threatened to self-immolate after she was harassed by male colleagues in parliament, telling AFP that the widelypublicised incident shows how laws to protect women are not being enforced. Nusrat Sahar Abbasi, an MP in Sindh province, spoke of her fury after provincial minister Imdad Pitafi invited her to his private chambers on the floor of the assembly on Friday in comments seen as sexual harassment in conservative Pakistan. She said she protested strongly but the deputy speaker of the assembly, also a woman, refused to take any action. A frustrated Abbasi was then pictured on Saturday holding a small bottle said to be of petrol and threatening to self-immolate if action was not taken.

President Donald Trump is on the verge of nominating a Supreme Court justice who could serve until the middle of the century. Trump said on Tuesday he expects to make a decision in the coming days and announce it next week. A person familiar with the process said the president has narrowed his choice to three federal appellate judges ranging in age from 49 to 54. They all were on the list of 21 potential high court picks Trump announced during his presidential campaign. The leading contenders who all have met with Trump are William Pryor, Neil Gorsuch and Thomas Hardiman, the person said, speaking anonymously because he was not authorized to speak publicly about internal decisions. Pryor, 54, is an Alabama-based judge on the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Gorsuch, 49, is on the Denver-based 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Hardiman, 51, is based in Pittsburgh for the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. All three were nominated by President George W. Bush for their current posts.

SEOUL, JAN 25 (AGENCIES): The North Korean elite are outwardly expressing their discontent towards young leader Kim Jong Un and his government as more outside information trickles into the isolated country, North Korea’s former deputy ambassador to London said on Wednesday. Thae Yong Ho defected to South Korea in August last year and since December 2016 has been speaking to media and appearing on variety television shows to discuss his defection to Seoul and his life as a North Korean envoy. “When Kim Jong Un

Thae Yong-ho

first came to power, I was hopeful that he would make reasonable and rational decisions to save North Korea from poverty, but I soon fell into despair watching him purging officials for no

proper reasons,” Thae said during his first news conference with foreign media on Wednesday. “Low-level dissent or criticism of the regime, until recently unthinkable, is becoming more frequent,” said Thae, who spoke in fluent, British-accented English. “We have to spray gasoline on North Korea, and let the North Korean people set fire to it.” Thae, 54, has said publicly that dissatisfaction with Kim Jong Un prompted him to flee his post.

PARIS, JAN 25 (AGENCIES): Edinson Cavani and Angel Di Maria propelled holders Paris Saint-Germain into a fourth straight French League Cup final with both scoring twice in a 4-1 victory at Bordeaux on Tuesday. Argentine Di Maria’s stunning free-kick gave record six-time champions PSG the lead, but Diego Rolan cancelled out the winger’s effort just past the half hour.

Bordeaux coach Jocelyn Gourvennec admitted the Parisians were simply too strong. “We have nothing to be embarrassed about in this defeat, it’s not an upset to be eliminated by Paris,” he said. PSG survived an early scare when Malcom steered straight at PSG goalkeeper Kevin Trapp after Thomas Meunier misjudged a cross, but the away side struck first when Di Maria drilled a 30-yard free-kick past Jerome Prior.

Aus open: Rafa roars to final four

Rafael Nadal celebrates after winning a point against Milos.

MELBOURNE, JAN 25 ( AG E N C I E S ) : R a f a e l Nadal claimed a dominant straight-sets win over world number three Milos Raonic to advance to the semi-finals at the Australian Open on Wednesday. The 14-time Grand Slam champion was too clinical for the Canadian, winning 6-4, 7-6 (9/7), 6-4 in two hours 44 minutes and will play Bulgaria’s 15th seed Grigor Dimitrovin Friday’s semi-final. He leads Dimitrov 7-1. Nadal kept alive hopes of a much-anticipated ninth Grand Slam final with his great rival Roger Federer as

the tournament got down to the last four. It is the Spanish great’s first Grand Slam semi-final appearance since his last 2014 French Open triumph after recent injury setbacks. “Milos is a very difficult opponent. He beat me two weeks ago in Brisbane in a tough match so I decided to go a little bit more inside the court on the return tonight,” Nadal said. “I knew that there were going to be tough moments in the match with a player like him, that he has one of the top serves in the tour.” It was the 30-year-old Spaniard’s fifth Australian

Open semi-final and his 24th in Grand Slams. Nadal is bidding to win his second Australian Open title and become the first man in the Open Era -- and only the third man in history -- to win each of the four Grand Slam titles twice. With his victory Nadal is projected to rise to six in next week’s ATP rankings unless Dimitrov goes on to win the Australian title, in which case he would be number seven. A title in Melbourne would lift Nadal to fourth on the world rankings. Nadal began the night quarter-final better and earned a break point in the fifth game before breaking when the Canadian over-hit a smash at double break point in his next service game. He safely negotiated the rest of his service games and took the opening set with an overhead smash. Nadal fought off a break point in a five-deuce service game early in the second set as Raonic began to serve better. The Canadian left the court for unspecified
