Fresh avalanches in J-K; toll over 20
Soldiers excavating the sites hit by an avalanche in Gurez sector. Srinagar/Banihal, Jan 27 (PTI): Several avalanches and landslides hit the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway today even as the death toll in the series of snow slides that have hit Jammu and Kashmir crossed 20 with the recovery of the bodies of four soldiers. The fresh avalanche in Banihal disrupted the work of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) that is busy clearing blockades due to snowfall in a bid to restore traffic on the highway which is closed for the third

Mallya plays innocence; says govt trying to hunt him
New Delhi, Jan 27 (IANS): The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MoSDE) on Friday announced the institution of annual awards to encourage entrepreneurship among youth across the country. The ‘National Entrepreneurship Awards’ will be given for the first time on January 30 in 11 categories. Union minister of state for skill development Rajiv Pratap Rudy will preside over the event and Home Minister Rajnath Singh will be the chief guest. To ensure the involvement of youth and ignite their interest, the ministry has partnered with many premier institutes of higher learning from across the country. IIT Delhi, IIM Ahmedabad, IIT Mumbai, TISS Mumbai, IIT Chennai, XLRI Jamshedpur and IIT Kanpur are a few of those engaged by the ministry for this purpose.
Vijay Mallya New Delhi, Jan 27 (PTI): Beleaguered liquor baron Vijay Mallya has claimed “innocence” in the alleged funds diversion related to the now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines (KFA), saying nothing has come out finally against him from a court. “Till this minute, there is no final judicial determination on what KFA owes to banks and what I may owe in my personal capacity after trial,” Mallya tweeted. In a series of tweets, Mallya raised concerns over the media coverage of the recent developments here and said his “innocence
Google removes 1.7 bn ‘bad’ ads in 2016
Scott Spencer New Delhi, Jan 27 (IANS): To protect consumers from misleading, inappropriate or harmful ads, Google on Friday announced that it took down 1.7 billion ads in 2016 that violated its advertising policies. The number is more than double the amount of bad ads it took down in 2015, the company said in its annual “Better Ads Report”. “Bad ads promote illegal products and unrealistic offers and can trick people into sharing personal information and infect devices with harmful software. They pose a threat to users, Google’s partners and the sustainability of the open web itself,” Scott Spencer, Director of Product Management, Sustainable Ads, said in a statement. Last year, Google expanded policies to better protect users from misleading and predatory offers as well as it beefed up its technology

to spot and disable bad ads even faster. Google introduced a policy to ban ads for payday loans, which often result in unaffordable payments and high default rates for users. Within six months, the technology giant disabled more than five million payday loan ads. Also, Google detected and disabled 112 million ads for “trick to click” ads -- six times more than in 2015. “Trick to click” ads often appear as system warnings to deceive users into clicking on them, not realising they are often downloading harmful software or malware. According to the report, most common inappropriate online ads were Ads for illegal products. Google disabled more than 68 million bad ads for healthcare violations and 17 million bad ads for illegal gambling violations in 2016. Google also removed 80 million deceiving and misleading ads that gave false information such as the ones which offered miracle cures that helped “people lose 50 pounds in three days without lifting a finger”. With the rise of a new type of scammers called, tabloid cloakers who take advantage of current trends and hot topics, Google suspended over 1,300 accounts for tabloid cloaking in 2016.

Meanwhile, a 60-yearold man died after he came under an avalanche in Uri sector of Baramulla district. Fateh Mohammad Mughal ventured out of his home last evening when he came under an avalanche. He had resigned as director and chairman of USL in March 2016. Authorities have issued a high danger avalanche warning in hilly parts of snow-bound Kashmir Valley in view of fresh snowfall. Several avalanches have also hit the highway at Shatani Nallah area in Banihal belt of Ramban district today, police officials said. A number of landslides were also triggered by heavy rains in Banihal-Ramban sector, they said adding the clearance of the snow to make the highway trafficable is being disrupted due to avalanches and landslides in Banihal-Ramban stretch. Chandigarh, Jan 27 (IANS): A Sikh priest, who refused to honour Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal during his visit to Harmandar Sahib in Amritsar in June 2016, joined the AAP on Friday and accused the Badals of financially helping those behind incidents of sacrilege in the state. Priest Balbir Singh had defended his refusal to give a ‘siropa’ (robe of honour) to Badal on June 3 last year by saying that he had done so to protest the repeated sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib in Punjab in 2016 and the Badal government’s failure to catch the culprits. He was immediately transferred out of Amritsar by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, which controls the Sikh shrines in the state. “I also came to know that the Badal family is giving financial help to those involved in the heinous act. Sacrilege incidents on this scale were not possible

Jalandhar, Jan 27 (IANS): Hitting out at the Congress, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday accused it of defaming Punjab and said its “opportunistic alliance” with the Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh, showed the party was living “on its last breaths.” Addressing a rally here in support of the ruling SAD-BJP alliance ahead of the February 4 assembly polls in Punjab, Modi launched a strong attack on the Congress, saying that it is feeling restless being out of power. “Will people of Punjab think of stepping on a boat which is sinking. Congress is history. A party living on its last breaths, it is incapable of doing anything (for welfare of people),” he said. He said Congress was “hungry for power” and had struck an electoral understanding with the Communist Party of India-Marxist for the West Bengal assembly polls last year despite having fought against it for over 50 years.
SC to hear Jallikattu matters on Jan 31 NEW DELHI, JAN 27 (AGENCIES): The Supreme Court on Friday said that it will hear all Jallikattu matters on January 31 after the Centre filed a plea seeking to withdraw the January 6 notification, allowing the bull taming sport in Tamil Nadu. A bench headed by Justice Dipak Misra allowed all the applications related to Jallikattu to be filed and said the matter will be heard on Tuesday. Attorney general Mukul Rohatgi mentioned before the bench that Centre has filed a plea seeking to withdraw the January 2016 notification. Justice Misra said the appropriate bench which has heard and reserved the verdict will take up the matters. The apex court has earlier said that it will be hearing the matter on January 30. On January 25, the Animal Welfare Board of India and rights bodies had challenged the new Tamil Nadu legislation enacted to allow Jallikattu during Pongal festival. Those challenging the bill, passed by the state assembly on January 23,
Tamilians trying to tame game. were contending that it was against the mandate of the Supreme Court judgement which has held that the “sport is inherently cruel” towards animals and this real issue has not been addressed by the lawmakers. The pleas were mentioned for urgent hearing before the apex court which had asked the Board and animal rights activists to file their applications. In their applications, the animal rights group had said that the new law passed by Tamil Nadu Assembly to allow Jallikattu has overreached the earlier verdict of apex court. The Prevention of
a bull during a Jallikattu Cruelty to Animals (Tamil Nadu Amendment), Act, 2017 piloted by chief minister O Panneerselvam, was unanimously adopted on January 23 by a voice vote in the assembly after a brief debate. Nearly 70 caveats have been filed in the Supreme Court seeking prior hearing if pleas challenging the new legislation allowing Jallikattu in the state come up for consideration. The caveats were filed a day after the AIADMK government moved the apex court seeking a prior hearing before any order is proposed to be passed in the matter.

without the active involvement of the ruling (Shiromani Akali Dal) party. My protest was against the state government’s failure to arrest the guilty,” Balbir Singh said on Friday after he was inducted into the Aam Aadmi Party by senior party leader Sanjay Singh and others. He said the AAP leadership has assured him those guilty in the sacrilege cases would be punished. Before formally joining the AAP, Balbir Singh announced his support to AAP candidate Jarnail Singh, who is pitted against the Chief Minister in Lambi assembly constituency. The elections to the 117-member Punjab as-
sembly will be held on February 4 and counting of ballots taken up on March 11. On October 20 last year, the Punjab Police said they had arrested two brothers for their involvement in the desecration of the Guru Granth Sahib at Bargari village in Faridkot district. A senior police officer then said that other incidents of sacrilege reported from Kohrian (Sangrur district), Nijjarpura (Amritsar), Ghawaddi (Ludhiana) and Bathh (Tarn Taran) were of localised nature. The police had claimed that five of the seven reported cases of sacrilege had been solved.
Lu c k n ow J a n 2 7 (PTI): Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has shot off a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting him to defer presentation of the Union Budget till the completion of poll process in five states. The letter sent to the prime minister earlier this week cited the Election Commission directive on January 23 asking the Central government not to announce any specific scheme for the five states going to polls in keeping with the model code of conduct. The chief minister said that this may deprive Uttar Pradesh, having the maximum population in the country, of special schemes
Akhilesh Yadav in the Union Budget which would have a direct impact on state’s development and interest of 20 crore people. Yadav recalled that in February-March 2012, the then government had taken a decision to defer the budget on its own till the completion of the poll process at that time.

“T
ince 1998, Bollywood megastar Salman Khan has been fighting to be acquitted of several charges of hunting two Chinkaras – one at Bhawad in Mathania near Jodhpur on September 26, 1998, and another Chinkara at Ghoda farms two days later on September 28,1998 while he was in Jodhpur filming for Hum Saath Saath Hain. A case against Khan was registered under the Arms Act by Rajasthan police in October, 1998 for alleged use and possession of arms with expired license. The guns were allegedly used for poaching the two blackbucks in Kankani village. The case was filed by the forest department. Earlier the trial court sentenced him to one year imprisonment on February 17, 2006 in the first case and to five years imprisonment on April 10 the same year in the second case. The Rajasthan government then filed a special leave petition in the Supreme Court on October 19,2016 against the acquittal of Bollywood actor Salman Khan by the High Court in two 18-year-old chinkara poaching cases. There are two other ongoing cases against the actor in Jodhpur courts, one under the Arms act and another for allegedly poaching a blackbuck. However, the Rajasthan high court acquitted Salman Khan on July 26,2016 in two cases of deer poaching. It was a huge relief for the popular but controversial actor who has had several run-ins with law in the past. The court said the prosecution failed to prove the charges against Salman and that the evidence was too thin for convicting the actor in the nearly 18-yearold cases of killing Chinkaras or Indian gazelles. However, the relief is only momentary as legal troubles are far from over. Out of the six cases against Khan, he has been acquitted in only four, while the verdicts of the other two remain pending. Besides the four cases associated with the black buck episode, he was also booked in the infamous hit-and-run case in Mumbai. He had allegedly rammed his car over four people sleeping on the footpath near the American Express Bakery on the night of 28 September, 2002. He was booked with the charge of ‘culpable homicide not amounting to murder’ under Section 304(2) of the Indian Penal Code. Bombay High Court acquitted him of all charges two years ago, leading to an appeal filed in the Supreme Court by the Maharashtra government. What can be seen from all cases relating to the mega star’s serious brush with the law is that these are serious enough which would have put lesser mortals behind bars for many years. Khan is no ordinary mortal but a super mega star of Bollywood who has scores of films yet to be completed and worth several hundred crores. In all the cases he has been charged with, Khan has fought and continues to fight with all the resources at his disposal. The state governments of Rajasthan and Maharashtra have both appealed against Salman Khan’s acquittals and the cases are being heard. The law is not as simple as being fair in meting out justice because the scales tip in favour of those who have lots of money to hire the best defence lawyers. Reading the incidents, most observers who see Khan as an offender believe he has been given the benefit of doubt.
he world is changing”, remarked one of the resource persons in a collegiate camp in 2007. It took nine years for this writer to arrive at a concordance with the statement. While equally agreeing that change, by law of nature, is inevitable and moderately beyond the control of human limited intelligence, the degree of change exerted against a particular time and the value it has occasioned either positively or negatively to a society is worth contemplated. Of all the conspiracy theories offered by various esteem authors and speakers in relation to the current tussle, one is but without substance of one’s own framework as the truth is implicitly concealed or our shadowed visions deter us so. The public are unjustifiably deprived of their rights to have an insight on the issues that shall bear ramifications in case of their uninformed decision. Nobody knows for sure that any changes effecting against the present status quo, which bids fair to accrue its instant turnover to the present generation, would have detrimental upshot to be handed down to the coming generation (as was the case with the Shillong Accord). Such dearth of established visions and supported solutions left a room for public to doubt the credentials of those who are at the helm of affairs. The question, therefore, is to undertake a case study of our current state of affairs which itself reluctantly entangled in socio-political dilemma. With the incumbent political dispensation and the forceful women organisation lassoed together to ensure an environment presumably viable for the conduct of a “developmentoriented” elections to the Urban Local Bodies, the tribal bodies, on the other extreme, tied up with the civil societies in an attempt to fend our walls from an “imposed” invasion into our sacred identity. Consequently, the politics of development and the movement for identity have assumed a diametrically antithetical stance with the parties involved had, out of the blue, brought our state to a near standstill. The deeper analysis of the imbroglio drive us to a clearer image of our view where modernity gets clashed with our identity, and where we fails to reconcile tradition with modernity in our progressive journey towards a shared but uncertain future. Today, our representative administration demands us of our liberal perspectives which, if we were to shape ourselves to fit into it, requires certain amount of sacrifices on our part: be it political identity, social structures or cultural limitations. But, when we momentarily or permanently overlooked our rich traditions in our accelerated effort to develop our state into a superficial

The missteps in handling women reservation and municipal election
Do not worry about your life… —Matthew 6:25 A warning which needs to be repeated is that “the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches,” and the lust for other things, will choke out the life of God in us (Matthew 13:22). We are never free from the recurring waves of this invasion. If the frontline of attack is not about clothes and food, it may be about money or the lack of money; or friends or lack of friends; or the line may be drawn over difficult circumstances. It is one steady invasion, and these things will come in like a flood, unless we allow the Spirit of God to raise up the banner against it. “I say to you, do not worry about your life….” Our Lord says to be careful only about one thing— our relationship to Him. But our common sense shouts loudly and says, “That is absurd, I mustconsider how I am going to live, and Imust consider what I am going to eat and drink.” Jesus says you must not. Beware of allowing yourself to think that He says this while not understanding your circumstances. Jesus Christ knows our circumstances better than we do, and He says we must not think about these things to the point where they become the primary concern of our life. Whenever there are competing concerns in your life, be sure you always put your relationship to God first. “Sufficient for the day is its own trouble” (Matthew 6:34). How much trouble has begun to threaten you today? What kind of mean little demons have been looking into your life and saying, “What are your plans for next month— or next summer?” Jesus tells us not to worry about any of these things. Look again and think. Keep your mind on the “much more” of your heavenly Father (Matthew 6:30).

The inner reality of love can be recognized only by love. ~ Hans Urs von Balthasar
(From previous issue) Second, our elected representatives had another opportunity to step into the recent situation by providing a détente, so as to create more space for dialogue and more time for tension to subside. Instead, the Naga People’s Front (NPF) reversed its position by supporting the women and going against the maleled civil societies. What the NPF did may be legally justifiable, but in doing so it has ignored the sociotraditional component of the Naga people. Simply put, the NPF has wrongly
superstructure, on what premise would we set our foundation when we exhausted the monetary proceeds we received at the cost of our identity? Here, we may remind ourselves of the past episodes where the terms of agreement of the historic 9 Points were unilaterally consigned as nonexistent; the introduction of the principle of election in Naga society which significantly is elite based by successfully parting with our system of selection which is purely based on merit; the deconstruction of the substantial 16 Points by transferring Nagaland from External Affairs to Home and effecting amendment in, and interpretation of, constitutional provisions including 23rd Amendment and conflict of interest between the GON and the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. All these are incidentally connected to the very core ideal of our identity where the basic right to self-determination and the principle of ownership over our own self is questioned and threatened. Without analysing our own actions about the possible nemesis of our downfall, we have reserved a reactive approach deep inside by blaming the outsiders for our own creations. The current situation where we are presented with very less options to reach an understanding is our own creation. It is conspicuously clear that we now have the techniques to destroy the hard earned peace on which we rest, but have not yet developed the ability to escape from the mess we have hedged. Would it not be much wiser on our part to explore avenues that would rather guarantee a stable future than by seeking to realign a fragile social fabric, if at all we wanted to be really modern in taste and scientific in experiment? Britain had in June 2016 voted to exit from the economic and political bloc much to the chagrin of the elite nations within the grouping arguing that a nation’s independence and identity is far more admired than progress under a chained situational arrangement. So also, the rise of Donald Trump in the United States has shocked the established system not only in America but throughout the world. Trump generally represented the voice of the often neglected community and a miniscule call for exclusivist but well-guarded approach. Both Brexit and Trump symbolised an exigency to protect a nation from invasive globalisation/ liberalism and in both the cases, the voters did reject the appeals of the elites for development. This underlines the supremacy of the people and the power of a united stance that can bring about the impossible within the realms of possibility. If the world’s most
handled the process by hastily trying to push the WR/ULB Election when our social equilibrium was at its worst. So, why is the NPF pushing the Municipal Election so hard now? I seriously doubt that it is because our politicians have suddenly come to care about the rights of our Naga women. My suspicion is this: They seem to see in the WR issue an opportunity to spread their Party’s tentacles further so as to take control of the municipalities and towns, in addition to gaining more
industrialised nations realised that they need to go back to where they had laid their foundations, must we not also re-examine the decisions that we have made which we categorically believed is the solution to our poorly developed cities and towns. In spite of being fully developed and industrialised, the above cited two countries still hung in suspense without sure of what awaits their future which is manifested in the turns of events we witnessed. Recalibrating elections to the ULBs with arrangement on mutual understanding does not mean misogynistic. Both the parties would rather feel satisfied to first concur then take the first step where both the genders can participate not with a “weakened” reservation but with full participation. The Nagas, perhaps, had never imagined then that by roping in the election system to our society would have played such havocs induced by might and riches for which we all are now indulged in blame game. Then, should we continue to justify our past historical conundrums as our steppingstone to commit further political blunder? The status of being “special” in an Indian Union has been gradually phasing out post Planning Commission era. Time is ripe for us to weigh the pros and cons of our policies and programs lest we succumb to the carrot and stick tactics that may embed itself in 73rd and 74th Amendments, clandestinely designed so as to deconstruct the last of our strongholds. We can choose from available options but we cannot choose the consequence that necessarily comes along. The movement by the civil societies to reach an understanding with the authority represents the desires of the people. Without unity, even if we have money, development might take place only at a personal level thereby quickening the ever widening rich-poor gap while proving contrary and antagonistic to an expected result. Circumstantially, the situation might take a wrong turn as cruel competition between the elites and the neglected lots would render our aged-old values to a mere code of the past. This will further catapult our identity crisis. Article 371 A is exclusively for us to override such malwares that may infect and affect our system. “The world keeps changing” and it is a license for us to devise a novel municipal administration with its functionaries proportionately represented by both the genders sans elections where our right of ownership, our hunt for recognition and our security of identity are well protected. We want liberty, we want belongingness, and most of all, we cry for identity. Nukhosa Chüzho, Officers’ Hill, Kohima, (khozch@gmail.com)
Central funds. Frankly, I dread of a day when the Indian national parties could use our State political parties to take away even the little semblance of self-government left in our small towns and villages--- all because of our love of Indian money and political power. If that were to happen, who’s to be blamed? Certainly, not our civil society leaders! And I doubt our women could be blamed either. What, then, should be our responses at this juncture? First, the Gover n-
ment would do well to postpone the Municipal Election in light of the uncompromising postures adopted by the various groups amongst us and the heated-environment we have found ourselves in. This, however, doesn’t mean that our Government still has the freedom to ignore the implementation of the 33% WR, as it is now under Court order to obey the Constitutional rule of law. Second, it would seem wise for our women to take a step back, too, at this point of time. If winning
Clamouring over women reservation does not augur well in Naga society
G
ender discrimination is non-issue. Ours is egalitarian society by tradition, and equal participation in public domain by both the gender is the rule of the Naga custom. The present society is steered with shared responsibilities and opportunities between men and women. Be it leadership in politics or the church, jobs or profession the avenue is open to all. Nothing is reserved as gender-specific. Property inheritance is to do with universal practice determined by tradition and custom. Even in this subject the matter lies with the decision of the parents. In our case the son

nlike in the past, the modern world is full of ‘thinking minds’ but, the ‘modern thinking’ is fallacious, unfortunately! The main problem with the modern thinkers is this. Although they are good at logic unfortunately they don’t gather enough data to act upon. They lack the universal or holistic approach at solving the problems; they segregate things and find solutions to the problems; they are good at one facet of the world, in one subject or one area and they lack knowledge in other areas or they don’t consider other areas. And in perspective they succeed at finding solutions to problems or at improving the existing solutions. This applies to all inventions, theories, etc., in other words to all the modern thinking as well. For example, an electronics engineer has knowledge his subject concerned and he doesn’t know other subjects; he doesn’t know how his ‘subject’ is connected with the other parts of the world. He applies his knowledge, invents something that is highly useful to the society and this invention harms some other part or parts of the world. An example being the invention of the cell phone! The electronics engineer knows very well about his subject, researches and invents the cell phone and undoubtedly it is highly useful to the people. But, sadly the problem is that the electronics engineer doesn’t know other subjects; how his electronic invention is related to other parts of the world. So, due to his lack of knowledge in other subjects or areas of the word – he has invented something that actually harms some part or species of the world which in turn would spoil the people; the problem comes indirectly; in a roundabout way. Due to the invention of the cell phones – of course we are all feeling happy and it requires no mention of the benefits of the cell phones here as we all know it well but, these cell phones systems have created new problems in the world. The cell phone radiation has killed almost all the ‘sparrows’ and that species is about to fade away. And we don’t know what would happen especially to
tantamount to denial of rights of Mr. Tom. Fair contest is disallowed for the sake of the favoured one. Fair fight is the rule of the game for the equals. Reservation is the result of serious inequality among the competing parties - inequalities in skills, mental faculty and abilities. The very reason for reservation would imply negative argument, meaning the less capable should not fight against the more capable. So here is the anti - thesis of the slogan “equality of abilities”, “gender equality” and so on. Dr. K. N. Nekha, (nishenanekha70@gmail.com)
the WR battle today is going to end up with losing the men, they better think twice. Perhaps, it’s worth even considering changing tactics. For example: What about putting the same efforts towards cleaning the election system and contesting even in the upcoming General Election in 2018? This is an upgrade to be envied, which is widely open to all. Lastly, are we men aware that the entire world is watching how we are acting towards our women? For every word and action of ours, good or bad, we
us, the human beings due to the disappearance of the ‘sparrow’ race from the ‘cycle of life’. Definitely we have to face certain problems which might not surface immediately; if certain part is removed from a machine it will give its impact on the whole machine without exception. Another example being - due to the cell phone radiation, the ‘honey bees’ are unable to find their ‘routes’ and are missing and dying. Due to this the production of the crops will dramatically decrease and finally many people will not get good amount of food or even starve out of food. These are some of the example depicting how the modern thinking is fallacious. We think and invent in a narrow angle separating the other angles so, we get problems. We, the modern thinkers lack the holistic approach; our approach is not universal and finally we land in troubles. But, unlike this the ancient societies were driven by the holistic approaches; they had wise people, the mystics who could look at the whole while solving problems. So, the ancient societies had different customs and ideas in life which we the modern thinkers fail to digest due to our ‘divide and analyze’ principle. Consequently, certain concepts and ides of the ancients appear ‘strange’ to us, the modern minds. But, though on the surface they might appear as bad and strange deep down the ancient ideas are the best, when we look them in the proper perspective, the holistic perspective. Only due to the holistic thinking the ancients didn’t invent or popularise certain inventions of the present age though they had the knowledge of certain modern inventions, theories and ideas. In other words and in many cases, the modern thinkers focus only on the 10% of the data and think that is the whole and deduct conclusions based on that and will fail eventually catching fatality. So, in order to think properly, correctly we, the modern thinkers have to cultivate the holistic approach otherwise we are deemed to fail and suffer. Albert
can be sure that our daughters and granddaughters will someday form their own opinion about each one of us. Are we preparing ourselves to be remembered well? Don’t we wish to leave no “dark stain” on our name in the records of history? Or, are we simply going along with the flow because it is the popular thing to do in our Naga society today? An appeal to AGM SBI Dimapur
Sir,
While inviting to draw your benevolent steps that SBI is one of the most valuable and bonafide assets of public in general. But regret to state that SBI Bhandari Branch ‘Net Working” condition is under roaming facilities. As a result of which public customers are facing untold troubles, conditions every now and then, due to following reasons; 1. Failure of Pass Book up-dating machine. 2. Shortage of Bank Staff 3. Failure of internet link 4. Frequent shortage of cash It is therefore with earnest prayer and request to take up these undesirable conditions and restore the basic necessary facilities at the earliest to avoid the untold hardships faced by the public customers. His action sparked another round of agitation by villagers in the evening at Bhangar. Bhangar, known for its history of political violence, has been on the boil since last week over “forced” acquisition of 16 acres of farmland -spread over the villages of Khamarait, Machhi Bhanga, Tona and Padmapukur -- by the state government for the Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd.

C H E N NA I , JA N 2 7 (AGENCIES): Thousands of people with chronic kidney disease now being kept alive by dialysis machines that tie them to a hospital bed for hours will be enormously relieved when a fistsized artificial kidney hits the market, possibly by the end of the decade. The device being engineered in the US will go through a series of safety and efficacy trials on hundreds of patients in that country before it is approved by the FDA, University of California San Francisco researcher Dr Shuvo Roy, co-inventor of the device, said at the Tanker annual charity and awards night
on Wednesday. The device that can be implanted in the abdomen and will be powered by the heart is designed to filter the blood and perform other kidney functions, including production of hormones, and help assist in blood pressure control, he told a hall filled with doctors, paramedics and patients. Unlike conventional haemodialysis, which merely filters toxins from the blood, the artificial kidney has a membrane that filters the blood and a bio-reactor comprising living kidney cells that are exposed to the blood during dialysis. “It performs the job of a kidney more holistically

Ko lkat a , J an 2 7 (IANS): The situation in West Bengal’s Bhangar, which has been on the boil due to violent protests over “forcible land acquisition” for a power grid project, was returning to normal as villagers on Friday removed all blocks on the roads to end the hardship faced by common people. The agitators on Thursday started blocking the road at various places and felled tree to obstruct roads demanding the release of Communist Party of India-Marxist Leninist (CPI-ML) Red Star leader Sarmishta Choudhury. Choudhury was arrested allegedly in connection with the Bhangar violence which claimed two lives last week. On Wednesday, the state government handed over the Bhangar violence case to the West Bengal Criminal Investigation Department (CID). The district court on Thursday remanded Choudhury to CID custody till February 3. “We have decided to remove all the blocks as common people were facing hardship. We will take out a protest rally in Kolkata on January 30,” said CPI-ML Red Star member Alik Chakraborty, adding that villagers are ready to relaunch the protest if administration and police apply forces to clampdown the protest. IEDs on the tracks. The discussion was general in nature and did not raise any specific mention of the impending sabotage plans for Ghorasahan or Kanpur,” said an officer. “That they were in direct touch with Huda as well as an alleged Karachi-based kingpin having links with ISI, has led NIA to strongly suspect an ISI angle to the alleged sabotage involving passenger trains in India,” the officer said. With the probe into Ghorasahan sabotage attempt as well as the Kanpur train derailment now formally with NIA, its teams will be seeking custody of the accused, Patel, Motilal Paswan and Mukesh Yadav as well others arrested in Delhi, for exhaustive questioning as well as recreation of the events leading to the said incidents.

Usha Reddy and Sarvesh Bisaria, sought a direction to the Centre to frame “a uniform policy throughout India for protection of cattle and to preserve them for all purpose instead of slaughtering them and exporting the said cattle in market, despite the fact that we have the provisions under the Constitution ...to protect and increase our cattle”. “Some States allow

Also, technical evidence points to conversations between the arrested accused on the one hand and Nepalese handler Brij Kishore Giri, Dubai-based mastermind Shamsul Huda and Karachi-based suspected ISI agent Shafi Shaikh on the other, lending credence to the ISI involvement theory,” said a home ministry officer. Sources following the investigation told TOI that Umashankar Patel, one of the three accused arrested by Bihar police, had spoken to both Huda and Shaikh while they were together in Dubai in August, after being put in touch with them by Giri. “They discussed conspiracy to cause train accidents in India by planting

NEW DELHI, JAN 27 (AGENCIES): The National Investigation Agency (NIA), which is probing three cases involving an attempt to blast tracks in East Champaran, the Indore-Patna Express derailment and last week’s Koneru rail accident, has prima facie found to be correct the Bihar police’s line of investigation pointing to an ISI-backed sabotage plot to cause train mishaps in India. The agency feels the ISI angle merits further probe. Sources in NIA told TOI that the three accused arrested in Motihari, during their recent questioning by NIA sleuths, have repeated their claims of a sabotage angle in both the failed Ghorasahan track blasting attempt as well as the Kanpur derailment. “There are no contradictions whatsoever in what they had told
New Delhi, JAN 27 (Agencies): A bench comprising CJI J.S. Khehar and Justice N.V. Ramana said it cannot direct States to frame laws banning slaughter of cattle. The Supreme Court on Friday refused to entertain a plea seeking either a total ban on slaughter of cattle or the framing of a uniform policy to protect and preserve them from slaughtering and smuggling. A bench comprising Chief Justice of India J.S. Khehar and Justice N.V. Ramana said it cannot direct States to frame law banning slaughter of cattle. Various orders have been passed by the apex court in the past on measures to be adopted to prevent illegal inter-State transportation of cattle, the bench said, while refusing to entertain the PIL petition filed by Delhi resident Vineet Sahai. They further deplored efforts by countries to give religious and sectarian colour to political issues and pointed out the responsibility of all States to control the activities of the so-called ‘non-State actors’.” India has ste pped up diplomatic pressure against terrorism. UAE has been increasingly uneasy, confronting as it is the twin dangers of Pakistansupported terror groups in close proximity and the looming threat from Daesh/ISIS. The most recent reminder was the killing of five UAE diplomats in Kandahar — the Taliban asserted it was not their doing. The UAE is reluctant to openly condemn the Taliban which it had supported in Afghanistan in the 1990s, along with
through numerous statesponsored organisations like Hedayah, is working with schools, Islamic clerics, and governments to steer away from extremist ideologies, weed out extremism from school curricula and even tailor the message clerics deliver to the faithful. Within UAE, the Friday sermons delivered by the imams are written and vetted by a government department on Islamic affairs to make sure the message is of “tolerance, moderation” etc. It shows the growing alarm coursing through these societies about radicalised Islam becoming an existential threat. “There is a close relationship between extremism and terrorism. Not every extremist becomes a terrorist, but every terrorist is first an extremist,” said state foreign minister Anwar Gargash, to Indian journalists in Abu Dhabi this week. “We have a problem within Islam, within Muslim societies, while the Islamisation of states are also contributing to growing extremism,” he added. There is a growing sense that countering terrorism is key to maintaining what they call the “UAE model” - a modern, tolerant Muslim nation. It is actually one of the anchors that have drawn India and UAE to each other in recent years.
New Delhi, Jan 27 (IANS): The Indian Navy is undertaking a large-scale war exercise off the western coast to test its combat readiness, with leading ships including aircraft carrier Vikramaditya, nuclear submarine Chakra taking part along with other vessels and aircraft, an official statement said on Friday. The annual Theatre Readiness Operational Exercise (TROPEX) had started on January 24, the statement said, adding that the exercise assumes “special significance” in the backdrop of recent developments. “Tropex 17 assumes special significance in the backdrop of the current security scenario. The exercise is aimed at testing combat readiness of the combined fleets of the Indian Navy, and the assets of the Indian Air Force, Indian Army and the Indian Coast Guard. It will also strengthen interoperability and joint operations in a complex environment,” it said.

Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. A security team from the UAE has just returned from Afghanistan after investigating the attack in Kandahar. Minister of state for foreign affairs, Anwar Gargash, said the government would take appropriate steps after the team submits its report. For the time being, the government is being circumspect on the possible outcome of the investigation. But with indications that it may have been the work of the Haqqani network, with help from ISI, as the Kandahar police chief stated, the UAE is in a bind. Sirajuddin Haqqani, head of the Haqqani network is now also the deputy leader of the Afghan Taliban, so it would be difficult to insulate the Taliban from responsibility. But it reinforces the Indian position which does not distinguish between good and bad Taliban/terrorists considering both a threat. The attack has provided fresh thrust to the UAE’s current approach of countering extremist ideologies that have created groups like al-Qaida and now ISIS/Daesh. The same UAE which was a supporter of the Taliban government in Afghanistan, after 9/11 decided to send troops to fight alQaida and Taliban in Afghanistan. Today, the Emirates,

NEW DELHI, JAN 27 (AGENCIES): India and UAE would work together to counter radicalisation and misuse of religion by groups and countries for inciting hatred and perpetrating acts of terrorism. A joint statement issued at the end of the visit by the UAE Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al Nahyan declared “strong condemnation of and resolute opposition to terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, wherever committed and by whomever, and declared that there could be no justification for terrorism anywhere.” Though the statement did not mention by name, it was clearly aimed at Pakistan. He said most contentious issues regarding the Goods and Services Tax (GST) have been sorted out between the Centre and states and the new indirect tax regime is at the final stages of implementation. “This (demonetisation), coupled with GST, in the days to come will ensure much larger revenues as far as states and the central government are concerned and expand the size as far as the formal economy is concerned,”

Survivors visit Auschwitz 72 yrs after liberation of death camp
Survivors gathered at the camp on Friday to mark the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, laying flowers and wreaths at the camp’s infamous execution wall. Auschwitz was liberated by Soviet soldiers on Jan. 27, 1945.
WA R S AW, J A N 2 7 (IANS): Some 60 Holocaust survivors returned to Auschwitz, the former Nazi concentration camp in Poland, on Friday to attend a ceremony marking the 72nd anniversary of its liberation. On this day in 1945, Red Army soldiers from the Soviet Union opened the gates of the AuschwitzBirkenau camp where some 7,000 mainly Jewish prisoners were trapped, already abandoned by the Nazi soldiers who were retreating to Germany, Efe news reported. Friday’s ceremony was presided over by Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydlo and attended by several international delegations, among them from Russia and Israel. The motto of this year’s commemoration
at the Auschwitz museummemorial was “Time”, symbolised by a watch found during the 1967 excavations of the site that had been stored away along with 16,000 other artefacts. These artefacts were to be displayed at the “Archaeology” exhibition at the camp’s museum. “ T i m e i n e v i t a b ly brings us further away from the history of Auschwitz and memory acts as our fight against the passage of time,” said the director of the Auschwitz museum Piotr Cywinski. To this end, Cywinski said it was important that future generations be aware of the dangers of populism, xenophobia, anti-semitism and radical nationalism. Presenting a blue and white wreath, matching the colours of the prisoner’s
uniforms in the camps, a group of survivors stood and paid homage at the Death Wall -- a stone-clad courtyard backdrop against which prisoners would be shot by the Nazi guards. Some of the men commemorating the 72nd anniversary of their liberation wore the blue and white hats they were given during their time in the camp. Former prisoners were also shown around the newly-opened exhibition, where glass cabinets displayed everyday objects such as spoons, cooking utensils and bottles excavated on the site. Above the entrance to the camp, the wrought iron lettering of “Arbeit Macht Frei” (work sets you free) offers museum visitors a reminder of the site’s original purpose.
Duterte pleads with rebels to rebuff IS advances MANILA, JAN 27 (AGENCIES): Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on Friday pleaded with the country’s Muslim separatist groups to deny sanctuary to militants with links to Islamic State, warning a war would ensue that would put civilians in danger. His appeal comes a day after his defence minister said foreign intelligence reports showed a leader of the Abu Sayyaf rebel group was getting instructions from Islamic State to expand in the Philippines, in the strongest sign yet of links to the Middle Eastern militants. Duterte said he could no longer contain the extremist “contamination” and urged two Muslim separatist rebels groups - the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and the Moro National Liberation Front - to rebuff Islamic State’s advances. “I am earnestly asking, I am pleading to the MNLF and the MILF, do not provide sanctuary to the terrorists in your areas,” he told troops at a military camp in Mindanao, his home region. “Because if that happens, then we will be forced to go after them within your territory, and that could mean trouble for all of us. I don’t want that to happen. “The government is going after them, they have done wrong, they killed a lot of innocent people.” The south of the predominately Christian Philippines has for decades been a hotbed of Muslim insurgency but Duterte is worried some smaller groups and splinter factions that have pledged allegiance to Islamic State could host IS fighters being driven out of Iraq and Syria.
JERUSALEM, JAN 27 (PTI): A defiant Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was today questioned by the police for the third time as a “possible criminal suspect” in a graft case for allegedly accepting valuable gifts from business figures and trying to trade favours with an Israeli newspaper. 67-year-old Netanyahu’s interrogation by the police at his residence in Jerusalem is said to revolve around two criminal cases - the Prime Minister and his family’s dealings with billionaire benefactors, including Hollywood producer Arnon Milchan known as Case 1000, and his negotiations for a suspected quid pro quo deal with a top Israeli publisher known as Case 2000. The inter rogation came a day after Netanyahu lambasted the media and rival politicians of trying “a coup attempt” through “undemocratic means”. Israeli Police yesterday questioned Hebrew daily Yedioth Ahronoth’s publisher Arnon Mozes with whom Netanyahu held recorded conversations on advancing legislation that would reduce the pro-Netanyahu Israel
NEW YORK, JAN 27 (IANS): More and more people are joining Facebook to get social support and a subsequent overall sense of well-being while microblogging site Twitter is helping its users gain knowledge in the age of information, says a study. The social networking sites offer an environment with opportunities for members to exchange various types of social support which is associated with positive benefits for individual well-being. “Social networking sites offer users an alternate avenue by which to gain access to social support... it appears that social support is the main motive for Facebook use, while Twitter usage focuses more on gaining new knowledge and seeking advice,” said Brenda K. Wiederhold from Interactive Media Institute -- a US based non-profit organisation. Social networking sites play a vital role in rendering social support to the needy. The study indicated that social support processes play out through social networks in addition to traditional face-to-face channels.

Fillon denies any wrongdoing and has called the allegations “abject.” The poll was carried out online on Thursday among 1,012 people.
PARIS, JAN 27 (AGENCIES): Some 61 percent of voters have a negative opinion of French presidential election candidate Francois Fillon, according to an opinion poll carried out after the publication of allegations that he paid his wife for a fake job. The Odoxa poll shows 38 percent have a good opinion of Fillon. That is a drop of 16 percentage points since a poll carried out early November by another polling agency, Ifop-Fiducial, Odoxa said in a note. He also called the effort an “undemocratic attempt” at “government overthrow”. The Israeli Premier on Wednesday addressed the Knesset’s (Israeli parliament) “Question Time” and made comments in a similar vein, speaking of the efforts as “persecution” and a “show of hypocrisy”. “I have news for you,” Netanyahu said adding, “I will continue to lead the State of Israel for many more years to come for the citizens of Israel, the State of Israel and the Jewish people.”

ccording to Cleveland.com, Neil Young and Rush’s Alex Lifeson and Geddy
Lee will induct Pearl Jam and Yes, respectively, into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in April. The
ceremony will take place on Friday, April 7 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. “There’s a creative committee that looks for these types of connections to find people who are the right fit,’’ said Todd Mesek, the Rock Hall’s vice president of marketing and communications, in explaining how the institution chooses those who will present artists for induction. “They look for those connections and a deep appreciation, so that the presenters can speak from the heart on the inductee’s impact — both on themselves as well as the fans at large,” he said. “Rush was definitely
influenced by Yes, and the two groups are both seminal prog-rock bands, so it’s a natural fit to have Rush welcome in Yes as fellow inductees,” said Mesek. “Pearl Jam continues to play Young’s ‘Rockin’ In The Free World’ as part of their sets today, so the relationship — personally, professionally and musically — is deep,” Mesek said. An edited version of the 32nd annual Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction ceremony will later air on HBO and there will be a radio broadcast on SiriusXM. Artists are eligible for the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame 25 years after the release of their first album or single.
Godsmack begins writing seventh Dragonforce putting finishing album to mark 20th anniversary touches on new album

ccording to The Pulse Of Radio, Godsmack has begun writing its seventh studio album, with frontman Sully Erna posting a photo of a guitar and amp on Instagram and noting, “Let the writing begin...#godsmack7 #20thanniversary #2018.” The new album will follow up 2014’s “1000hp” and, as Erna noted, will commemorate the band making it to the two-decade mark. Its self-titled debut disc arrived in 1998. Erna told The Pulse Of Radio a while back that he’s always been proud that Godsmack doesn’t fit neatly into one musical genre. “You know, it is nice to know that we’re creating stuff that’s just kind of living on and that does really well in the active rock stations and the hard rock world and that kind of stuff,” he said. “So we’re in that middle ground. We’re not quite as poppy as like Aerosmith, but yet we’re not as dark and metal as, you know, the Slipknots or the Metallicas or whatever. So we’re kind of like that in-between band.” The new CD will also be its first effort for BMG, following a split with the band’s label home since 1998, Republic/Universal. Godsmack signed the new contract with BMG last fall. The first release through the new deal was Erna’s second solo album, “Hometown Life”, which arrived last September.
ritish epic power metallers Dragonforce are putting the finishing touches on their new album for a tentative spring release. Speaking to Alto Music at this past weekend’s NAMM show in Anaheim, California, Dragonforce guitarist Herman Li stated about the band’s follow-up to 2014’s “Maximum Overload”: “Crazy enough, we’ve been in hiding — we didn’t post anything online, on Facebook or Twitter — but we’ve been hiding making an album. So we’re actually almost finished with another one already. People can expect it in spring this year. We’re just putting the final touches to the new album now.” Dragonforce’s forthcoming effort will mark the band’s third full-length studio release with singer Marc Hudson, who joined
the group in 2011 following the departure of original frontman ZP Theart (now in Skid Row). Asked if it was difficult to find a new vocalist who could help Dragonforce retain its core sound while enabling the band to move forward, Li said: “To be honest, yeah, it is really difficult to find a singer that can sing old stuff and new stuff at the same time. So it took quite a while for us to find Marc. And he had never been in a band before professionally; he was just, like, in a band of friends, like starting out. It took a while to get into the groove of the thing, but now he’s completely, you know, doing it. He’s really awesome now.”

Indie rapper Moko Koza releases single ‘One Day’
K
ohima based rapper Moko Koza who has been doing rounds in the local music circuit lately have released a brand new single titled, “One Day-Khunhie Puo” which also features lyrics in Tenyidie. Backed by catchy tunes, the song highlights the determination to persevere and hustle through hardships of life and is
a self transfused inspirational song. Starting off with melodic guitar riffs the production features a laid back drum arrangement backed by soulful piano tunes. First verse of the single is filled with insights into the cordial character the young artist is. Correlating his perception with subtle metaphor he highlights emphasis on
grinding with exertion and enthusiasm. Chorus of the song is an emotionally charged lullaby with accompanying vocals backed by spontaneous chipmunk like effect. The second verse is sang in Tenyidie language covering aspects relating to culmination of life goals or strength of mind and will that may influence the path one embraces. The artiste is most likely one of the first to introduce Tenyidie influenced rap through standard form of song recording. On further correspondence the budding rapper concluded by stating that through this song he wanted to lay emphasis on the assumption that we all can make it someday no matter the strife or struggle and along the way a beautiful life awaits for everybody.
Ed Sheeran aiming to sell more records than Adele
E
d Sheeran has discussed his competitive streak in a new interview, revealing that he regards Adele as his biggest rival. The singer-songwriter returned earlier this month after a three-year hiatus with two new songs, ‘Shape Of You’ and ‘Castle On The Hill’. The songs have since broken a chart record by entering at Number One and Number Two in the same week. He then announced new album ‘÷’, which is pronounced “Divide”. “Adele is the one person who’s sold more records than me in the past ten years,” he told GQ. “She’s the only person I need to sell more records than. That’s a
big fucking feat because her last album sold 20 million. But if I don’t set her as the benchmark then I’m selling myself short.” He added: “I’m not in competition [creatively] because we all sit in our own lanes, but once the creative product is out there is a race
to the finish line.” Yesterday Sheeran announced a series of UK and Ireland tour dates in support of new album ‘÷’. The singer-songwriter’s UK and Ireland leg will include two shows apiece in Dublin, Glasgow, Newcastle, Manchester, Not-
tingham, Birmingham and London, all taking place in April and May. It has been reported that James Blunt will be joining Sheeran on his US dates, though this has yet to be confirmed, and Sheeran’s US dates have yet to be announced. During a recent interview, Sheeran confirmed that he will appear on James Corden’s ‘Carpool Karaoke’ shortly, and said he wants to show off his rap skills when he does. In interviews he has also revealed the song he wishes he had kept for himself, and delivered an impromptu cover of the Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air theme tune.

Eulogy to my husband
Oh My Dear, there is a sea of difference between you and me In age and stature, I can’t fathom – how To make up in my life to catch up with you, Yes, I know it’s a folly though! The Love and care bridged the gap between us, And flattered me to believe you were just my age. You were at your age a challenge and an inspiration You could outsmart the smartest of the young and old alike. Our life together twenty years, added to a month and a day Whizzed past as a gush of wind, seemed like half of a day You spent your life’s long years in dedicated service For a wishful future for the Nagas, and for our God Almighty. You took one and all as equal, whether rich or poor Made them feel your friend, without any discrimination Your words ring in our ears, to guide us through our life ‘ Will ever cherish in Heart ’, Oh My Dear, when our daughter asked you daddy, “What is the best stage of your life?”, you replied “This is the best stage of my life when I’ve accepted Jesus Christ ” Thence, You begin to live a life acceptable to GOD. Our dinner, lunch and fellowship are quite lonely without you, Keeps reminding of your Morning devotion, Feeding us with love for God And the Holy Bible! As you often stayed out of home,so I am still Keeping to believe You are on a Journey and to return home

Man Utd stutter into League Cup final
Hull forward Oumar Niasse (left) and United midfielder Jesse Lingard (centre) battle for the ball in the opening exchanges.
Lo n d o n, Ja n 2 7 (Agencies): Manchester United reached the English League Cup final despite surrendering its 17-match unbeaten record with a 2-1 loss to Hull in the second leg of their semifinal on Thursday. United, which won the first leg 2-0, advanced with a 3-2 win on aggregate and will play Southampton in the final at Wembley Stadium on Feb. 26. On-loan striker Oumar Niasse scored the winner with an 85th-minute tap-in,
and another goal for Hull would have sent the game into extra time. Tom Huddlestone gave the hosts the lead at KCOM Stadium by converting a 35th-minute p e n a l t y, awa r d e d f o r Marcos Rojo’s tug on Harry Maguire at a corner. Paul Pogba equalized from close range in the 66th, a bright spot in an otherwise disappointing display by the France midfielder. Pogba was not alone in that respect, though. United produced one of its
most sluggish performances of the season, perhaps through complacency because of its commanding lead from the first leg. In the end, Marouane Fellaini’s late goal at Old Trafford, which sealed the 2-0 win, was pivotal. ``We’re disappointed the way we played,’’ United midfielder Michael Carrick said. ``It’s a strange feeling, we wanted to keep our run going.’’ United will look to win a fifth League Cup title and a first trophy under

Barcelona cruise into King’s Cup semis M a d r i d, J a n 2 7 (Agencies): Barcelona eased into the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey for a seventh consecutive season 6-2 on aggregate as Denis Suarez scored twice in a 5-2 win over Real Sociedad on Thursday. Already leading 1-0 from the first leg, Barca gave Sociedad a mountain to climb as Denis Suarez finished off a great team move with the only real chance of the first-half before Lionel Messi converted from the penalty spot. Juanmi and Willian Jose grabbed a pair of consolation goals for the visitors either side of Luis Suarez’s third for Barca before Arda Turan and Denis Suarez rounded off the rout. The 28-time winners join Atletico Madrid, Alaves and Celta Vigo, who dumped out Real Madrid on Wednesday, in Friday’s semi-final draw. One moment of magic lit up a first-half otherwise
devoid of goalmouth action as after registering his first Barca goal at the weekend, Denis Suarez’s purple patch continued. Samuel Umtiti robbed Xabi Prieto deep inside the Sociedad half and from there Neymar, Messi and Luis Suarez combined to tee up his namesake for a first time finish into the far corner. Sociedad had a huge chance to get back into the tie nine minutes into the second period when Jose fired too close to Jasper Cillessen with just the Dutch international to beat from 10 yards out. And within seconds any lasting hope Sociedad had was gone as Neymar accelerated in behind the visitors’ defence and was cynically hacked down by Inigo Martinez with the defender lucky to escape with just a yellow card. Messi had handed responsibility from the spot to Neymar in each of Barca’s last two Cup outings, but stepped up himself to

register his 29th goal in just 27 games this season. Sociedad were briefly given a glimmer of hope when substitute Juanmi took advantage of a glaring gap in the centre of the Barca defence to lob Cillessen. Barca immeditately responded, though, as Messi shrugged off three Sociedad challenges to release Luis Suarez to slot his 20th

Yet, that once again just kicked Barca back up a gear as Turan tapped home Aleix Vidal’s cross minutes after replacing Neymar before Messi teed up Denis Suarez for his second of the night.

Safarova and Mattek-Sands hold their trophy after winning the women’s doubles.
MELBOURNE, jan 27 (agencies): American Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Czech Lucie Safarova enhanced their reputation as the dominant duo in women’s doubles by winning the Australian Open title for the second time. The second-seeded pair had to scramble from behind to eventually overwhelm Czech Andrea Hlavackova and China’s Peng Shuai 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-3 in a tense final. It extended the pair’s unbeaten record to 12 matches at Melbourne Park - they won the 2015 doubles title in their debut as a team, but didn’t play together last year because illness forced Safarova to miss the championships. The victors did a rehearsed dance routine on Rod Laver Arena after being presented with their trophies and held aloft the perpetual cup.
It was the first meeting of the teams in which all four players have won at least two Grand Slam doubles titles. Hlavackova and Peng, who had not dropped a set on the way to the final, took an early service break and seemed in command of the opening set. But Mattek-Sands, 31, and Safarova, 29, were able to retrieve the situation and the set headed inevitably to a tiebreaker. Hlavackova, 30, and Peng, 31, surged to the lead and held on to close it out 7-3. Hlavackova and Peng both lost serve to slump to 0-3 in the second set before breaking Mattek-Sands to get on the scoreboard. It proved to be merely a slight interruption for Mattek-Sands and Safarova as they powered through the second set. The set swung on Hlavackova’s serve in the fourth game of the deciding set. After
