Teen fires at anti-CAA protestors in Delhi 1 injured while police remained mute spectators
NEW DELHI, JAN 30 (PTI): Thousands of people and police personnel faced off against each other near the Jamia Millia Islamia University on Thursday after a man fired a pistol at a group of anti-CAA protesters, injuring a student before walking away while waving the firearm over his head shouting “Yeh lo aazadi”. While the man was overpowered by police and arrested, the injured student Shahdab Farooq, who was seen bleeding from his left hand, was taken to the AIIMS Trauma Centre. Farooq, a mass communications student, belongs to Kashmir. The entire drama, which triggered panic in the area, was captured by television cameras that showed the man in light coloured pants and a dark jacket, walking away on an empty road barricaded by police, turning around and shouting at the protesters in Hindi, “Here, take this freedom.”

As tension spiralled in the area, Home Minister Amit Shah said on Twitter that he had spoken to the Delhi police commissioner to take strictest possible action. Shah also said the government will not tolerate such incidents and the guilty will not be spared. The gunman went live on Facebook, where he identifies himself as Rambhakt Gopal, before the brandishing the gun. Police said they were verifying whether it is his real name. Before the attack, the man put out messages on Facebook, referencing the Shaheen Bagh protests nearby. “Shaheen Bhag Khel Khatam (Run Shaheen,
the game is over)”, said one post. Another message stated, “Please wrap me in saffron in my last journey with slogans of Jai Shri Ram”. His Facebook profile was deleted after screenshots of his posts were circulated widely on social media platforms. His social media profile revealed links to the Bajrang Dal, a group with ties to the ruling BJP. The shooting comes just days after senior BJP leader and Union Minister Anurag Thakur was seen prompting a crowd at a Delhi election rally to chant the slogan “Goli Maaro...” (shoot the traitors) in reference to protesters against the CAA.
Police watched silently: The firing at the Jamia Millia Islamia student march to Rajghat on Thursday is the story of an assailant brandishing the firearm, opening the fire in public and the police remaining a moot spectator. When Gopal, the assailant, brandished the gun and threatened to shoot at students, barely 10 metres away was standing Jamia SHO Upendra Singh along with dozens of police personnel. But they did nothing to prevent the firing, despite the students shouting hoarse for the police help. When Gopal fired his pistol, it hit Shadab Farooq, a mass communication department student, injuring his hand. And the police got into action -- albeit in a slow motion. Only one cop moved to get his hands on the assailant. They also didn’t remove the barricade or attempted to take the injured student to hospital -- Shadab had to climb the barricade and run to seek medical attention. The firing took place when the march had just moved 60 metres, from Gate No. 7 towards the main road at the Fortis Hospital crossing.

After peace pact, 1615 NDFB cadres surrender arms, ammunition in Assam Guwahati, Jan 30 (PTI): Three days after signing a peace pact with the government, over 1,600 cadres of the Bodo militant group NDFB on Thursday surrendered their arms and ammunition before Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal. Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the National Democratic Front of Boroland’’s (NDFB) move, saying it sends a clear message that a solution to any issue is possible when the path of violence is shunned and faith in democracy and Constitution reposed. Welcoming the NDFB cadres-- 836 of the NDFBProgressive, 579 of the NDFB-Ranjan Daimary faction and 200 of the NDFB(S) led by B Saoraigwra-- into the mainstream, Sonowal said he was confident that the initiative will inspire others, who were yet to give up arms, to come together and work for the “Team Assam”. Over 4,800 weapons, including AK rifles, lightmachine guns and stenguns were laid down by the NDFB members on the occasion. The government on
Sonowal and Sarma during the surrender ceremony, Thursday.
Monday had signed an accord with the NDFB and two other outfits, providing political and economic benefits without acceding to the demand for a separate state or Union Territory, with an aim to bring permanent peace in the Bodo-dominated areas in Assam. Sonowal said a comprehensive rehabilitation policy would be formulated for providing employment opportunities to the surrendered militants so that they could make meaningful contribution to the process of nation-building. Union Home minister Shah had described the agreement as “historic” and said it would bring permanent solution to the
decades-old problems of the Bodo people. As per the accord, the BTC will be strengthened with more powers and its seats will be expanded from 40 to 60. A commission will be set up for inclusion of Bodo-dominated villages in the BTC and exclusion of those where Bodos are not in majority. This was the third Bodo accord to be signed in 27 years. As per the new accord, the name of the BTAD will be changed to Bodoland Territorial Region and it will have more executive, administrative, legislative and financial powers. The government will soon notify Bodo language as in Devanagari script as an associate official language of the state.
Two-day bank Alarm bells for Modi govt as quality of CPO files PIL seeking compensation strike from today Correspondent
KOHIMA, JAN 30 (NPN): In pursuant of the resolution adopted during its executive council meet held on June 29, 2019 “to pursue damage compensation for those whose properties were damaged” by M/s Maytas-Gayatti during construction of two-lane road, Chakhesang Public Organisation (CPO) filed a public interest litigation (PIL) at Gauhati High Court, Kohima Bench on December 13, 2019 seeking justice on behalf of thousands of poor and helpless victims in Nagaland in general and Phek district in particular. This was stated by CPO Committee on 2-lane Road convener Vaprumu Demo at a press conference at Hotel Japfü here on Thursday. It was also attended by five other members of CPO Committee on 2-lane Road. The convener said the
case was filed by Angshuman Sarma on behalf of CPO and the court had instantly admitted the petition as a fit case on January 16, 2020. Thereafter, notice had been issued to all respondents returnable within six weeks and listed the matter for hearing on February 27. Sharing details, Demo said M/s Maytas-Gayatri was awarded four projects work of two-lane roads – Longleng-Changtonya road, Mon-Tamlu-Merangkong road, Phek-Ptutsero road and ZunhebotoChakhahama road – under SARDP-NE (Phase A) worth Rs 1,296 crore in 2010. He said the work started in 2011 under direct supervision of PWD (NH), Nagaland. However, he alleged that the joy of people over the two-Iane roads soon turned into a nightmare due to total disregard of contractual agreements
(on designated dumping areas) and public objection as the contractor rampantly cut earth of steep hills and pushed down all excavated soil, rocks and debits on valley side, resulting in huge damage of valued land and properties of the poor and marginalised villagers. Demo regretted that the reckless construction activities by the contractor and lack of supervision by implementing authority led to needless displacement of many human habitations and permanent destruction of massive cultivated as cultivable land became landslide zones and dumping grounds. He claimed that several thousands of families were deprived of livelihood and many migrated elsewhere, while many children gave up their studies and scores now were dependent solely on BPL rice or charity.
DIMAPUR, JAN 30 (NPN): United For um of Bank Unions (UFBU), which comprises of nine bank unions of employees and officers, has called for a two-day nationwide strike from January 31 to February 1 to protest against “unwarranted delay” in wage revision settlement for bank employees and officers due from November 2017 by Indian Banks’ Association (IBA). Besides the proposed two-day strike, UFBU has also given call for similar agitation programmes including three-day strike (March 11-13, 2020) and indefinite strike from April 1, 2020. life, inflation, income indicators worsen
NEW DELHI, JAN 30 (IANS): Just eight months into the second term, it is not good news for the Modi government on the economic and inflation front, with the IANS-CVoter Budget Tracker findings showing that people are unhappy, income are going down and household expenditure is going up. On the eve of the Economic Survey and Union Budget, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman have much to worry about going into the flagship economic event of the year 2020. The key takeaways of IANS- CVoter Budget Tracker are that life has gotten worse over last year on all parameters and over 2015 after the Modi government took over. All the economic parameters are in bad shape and respondents to the tracker are in a de-
spondent mood. The findings come at a time when GDP is at decadal lows, investment is floundering, investigative agencies are unearthing new scams and business confidence is law which in turn is hurting consumers, households which are struggling to make ends meet. To make matters worse, the despondency in the country on economic issues is touching the rock bottom levels of 2014 when PM Modi riding on promises and high aspirations rode to power promising jobs, prosperity and growth. The poll sample size for the tracker is 4292 and the survey was conducted in third and fourth week of January 2020. High inflation coupled with concerns over the general economic slowdown as well as low job creation seems to have dented the Central government’s image as prudent economic
manager, a survey report showed.adir of economic drift and policy paralysis. Ahead of the Union Budget a new survey shows a growing unease among the general public due to rising prices of everyday use items under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi. Nearly three-fourths of the respondents in IANSCVOTER survey this year said that inflation has gone up and nearly 40 per cent said that high inflation has had an adverse impact on their quality of their life. The pre-budget survey comes as crude reality and a reflection of current economic indicators on the ground, as wages have stagnated while prices of essentials including food items have surged in the past few months. Not to forget, unemployment rate released last year shows that it at a 45-year high level.

DIMAPUR, JAN 30 (NPN): On behalf of the general public of Yikhum, Yikhum Village Council (YVC) has strongly condemned the January 27 incident at Doyang in Wokha in which one Mhabemo Mozhui, s/o Chanbemo Mozhui of Chudi village, had allegedly attempted to murder truck driver Nyanbemo Kithan and his friend Wochothung Odyuo while unloading some goods at Doyang en route to Wokha around 9.30 p.m. Asserting that the victims were innocent and were earning their livelihood by plying as truck driver and co-driver, YVC chairman Robin Kithan, assistant head GB Mhonlumo Odyuo and secretary Chumbemo Odyuo alleged that the accused attempted to murder the victims without any provocation. They accused Mozhui of pulling out a pistol and shooting on the ground before firing at the driver. Unfortunately the bullet hit the co-driver in the mouth who lost some teeth and was now undergoing medical treatment, they added. YVC alleged that Mozhui and his friends chased the victims with the intention of killing them, though the latter managed to escape. According to the council, this was not the first instance
but one among many such acts in which the accused had manhandled and attempted on the lives of many innocent law-abiding citizens of the village without any reason. Considering the seriousness of the case, YVC in its emergency general public meeting held on January 28 resolved to file and FIR immediately with the police seeking arrest of the culprit and associates within 48 hours of lodging of the complaint. The meeting also resolved to demand that the State government should bear medical expenses of the victims, warning that in the event of failure to nab the culprit within the stipulated time, the case would be pursue by the people, for which the turns of events might not be predicted. YVC also appealed to all groups and organisations not to entertain “criminalminded” person Mozhui in their fold, cautioning that it would not co-operate with any such group or organisation in the future. In a letter to the NSCN (I-M) kilo secretary, YVC demanded immediate termination of Mhabemo from active service of the NSCN (I-M) and to award stern action. K Y M C
