In the controversial 1998 election Congress won 53 seats (44 uncontested and nine contested) while independents won seven seats. Dimapur: In Dimapur, sources informed Nagaland Post that some political parties have decided to file their nominations on January 5 for all the 23 wards. Even as the apex bodies-- Angami, Ao, Lotha and Sumi have asked their respective community members to refrain from filing their nominations, sources said some determined candidates, including those of several political parties, would file their papers with adequate security. Meanwhile, sources also informed that the Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation (ENPO) has called for a meeting at Dimapur to discuss on the issue. Kohima: According to DIPR report, Lithrongla Tongpi informed that till 3 p.m. no papers were received from any of the candidates on the first day of filling of
nominations. Tongpi also informed that 26 nomination forms were issued till January 3, 2017. Angami Public Organization (APO) president Dr. Vilhusa Seleyi also told this correspondent that APO remained firm against holding civic polls. He hoped that intending candidates would respect the voice of the leaders and people. He further informed that APO volunteers consisting of Angami Youth Organization (AYO) and Angami Student’s Union (ASU) were deployed at the main gate of Kohima DC’s office to make the indenting candidate aware of the APO resolution and prevent them for filing nominations. Mokokchung: In Mokokchung, as per the directives of the Ao Senden, volunteers and representatives from Landowners (Lika board), All Ward Union Mokokchung Town (AWUMT) and Ao Senden officials gathered near DC office to prevent filling of nomination papers for the civic polls. CMO responds to ENPO DIMAPUR, JAN 3 (NPN): Responding to the letter submitted by ENPO on Nagaland Municipal issue, the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) on Tuesday clarified that the 15-day ultimatum submitted on December 10, 2016 by the Naga Hoho and ENPO was received and the issue discussed during the cabinet meeting held on December 13, 2016, a DIPR report stated. The cabinet was of the opinion to go ahead with the civic body polls rather than waiting to wait for the Supreme Court verdict, CMO stated. In order to apprise the matter, a meeting was held with representatives of both the ENPO and NH at the chief minister’s residence in Dimapur on December 17, 2016 in the presence of the ministers, parliamentary secretaries and other legislators, wherein the state government’s stand was conveyed to the representatives and the issues raised were amply clarified on that day
where all understood the matter, CMO stated. It was only after the meeting that the dates to hold the civic body polls were announced (December 21), CMO stated. In this regard, CMO has urged upon ENPO to kindly appreciate that the government had neither ignored nor did it have the intention to sideline the ultimatum submitted by the Naga Hoho and ENPO. “However, if any misunderstanding has been created on this count it is deeply regretted,” the CMO added. CMO further reiterated that neither the Nagaland Municipal (3rd amendment) Act 2016 nor 33% women reservation would in any way infringe upon article 371(A) “and the state government stands by this”. Meanwhile, CMO said the chief minister has appealed to the ENPO to extend their cooperation in peaceful conduct of elections to the ULBs which has been set in motion.

On the backfoot, cabinet firm to go ahead with civic polls Staff Reporter
DIMAPUR, JAN 3 (NPN): Finding itself on the back foot in the face of mass and overwhelming opposition throughout the state, against the controversy surrounding the decision to press ahead with elections to Urban Local Bodies (ULBs), the state cabinet Tuesday attempted an academic exercise by issuing a clarification but deciding that “the process of election to the ULBs as notified should be completed”. A press communiqué issued by Menokhol John, Principal Secretary, Municipal Affairs Department (MAD) informed that the decision was made after deliberating on the issue at a meeting held in the Dimapur residence of chief minister T.R. Zeliang According to the communiqué, the response of the cabinet to respective points were: (1)On whether civic polls with 33% women reser vation infringed (Cont’d on p-5) upon rights of Nagas as
Till Tuesday afternoon, no forms were received from any of the candidates, sources informed. Apex tribe organisations, civil society organisations, town and village councils have totally opposed holding of civic polls on various issues, besides the 33% women reservation. Some organisations, contended that ceding reservation in civic bodies would provide grounds for making similar future demand to assembly constituencies. If that happened, they said, it would embolden demand for diluting perceived “gender unequality” in traditional and customary laws practices and which would then infringe upon Article 371A. There were also misgivings that in order to raise revenues, municipal and town councils will have to impose tax on land and buildings so as to get central funding. It was feared that such imposition of land and property tax would infringe upon the protection guaranteed under Article 371A.
Quake jolts NE; 1 dead, 4 injured AGARTALA, JAN 3 (PTI): A moderate intensity earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter Scale and epicentred in Tripura jolted the country’s Northeast this afternoon, triggering landslides in the hill state and leaving a woman dead and four others injured. According to the National Centre for Seismology, the epicentre of the temblor which occurred at 2.39 p.m. was in Dhalai district in Tripura at a depth of 28 km. Officials in Meghalaya said the quake was felt for quite some time but there was no report of damage anywhere in the state. The quake was felt in Assam too, including capital Guwahati, and people rushed out of their houses and offices. “Karimganj, Hailakandi, Cachar and Dima Hasao are the bordering districts of Assam with Tripura. We received reports from the authorities that no damage has taken place there,” Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) Joint Secretary Nandita Hazarika said.
Central govt. extends AFSPA in Nagaland for another six months NEW DELHI/KOHIMA, JAN 3 (IANS): The controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) has been extended for another six months in Nagaland, an official said on Tuesday. “The Union Home Ministry in a notification on December 30, extended the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act 1958, in the entire area of Nagaland for another six months, a Nagaland home department official said. The notification issued by the Home Ministry’s Joint Secretary Satyendra Garg said that the Centre was of the opinion that the area comprising the entire state of Nagaland was in such a “disturbed and dangerous condition that the use of armed forces in aid of the civil power is necessary”. Rights groups, various civil societies and political parties, specially the tribal-based parties in Northeastern states described the law as “draconian” and have been demanding its withdrawal as the act gave huge powers to the Army
and para-military forces to conduct operations anywhere in the disturb areas without any prior notice. Besides Nagaland, the AFSPA is also in force in Manipur (excluding the Imphal Municipal Council area), some parts of Assam and in several districts of Arunachal Pradesh. The Left-ruled Tripura in May 2015 had withdrawn the AFSPA which gave sweeping powers and judicial immunity to security forces in conflict-hit areas. The law was enforced in the state 19 years ago to curb terrorism. The central government, various political parties, including the Bharatiya Janata Party and Congress hailed the Tripura government’s decision. The Centre and the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Isak-Muivah) had entered into a ceasefire agreement in August 1997. Around 60 rounds of talks were held to end the insurgency that was said to have claimed 25,000 lives since 1947.
Manipur crisis: NH appeals MHA to convene tripartite talks DIMAPUR, JAN 3 (NPN): Naga Hoho has appealed to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to intervene and summon a tripartite talks between the government of Manipur and the United Naga Council (UNC), saying a solution to any problem/crisis could be brought only through dialogue across the table. In a press release, Naga Hoho president P. Chuba Ozukum and Naga Hoho assembly speaker K. Elu Ndang, however, demanded that the president and publicity secretary of UNC, who were still under the police custody, be released unconditionally before any dialogue. Naga Hoho said it believed in the brotherhood and friendly relationship between the Nagas and Meiteis, which has been maintaining since time immemorial. The Hoho, however, claimed that despite pro-
longed turmoil in the Naga inhabited areas of Manipur, the government of Manipur and the government of India have been maintaining lukewarm attitude towards the genuine demands of the people. It also said that the sensitivity and seriousness to resolve the issue has not been addressed by the responsible authority.

enshrined under Article 371A : the cabinet said women quota in ULBs was a constitutional obligation through Article 243T that came to force in 1993 and not through any Act of the state. It said the Nagaland Municipal Act was only to carry out the constitutional mandate and give effect to Article 243T. (2) On whether concerns expressed by various tribal organisations were addressed by the Nagaland Municipal (Third Amendment)Act,2016: The cabinet maintained that holding of civic polls with 33% women reservation as passed by the government in 2006 to give mandate to Art.243T ( but Part-IXA was subsequently made inoperative by the state government through an assembly resolution on September 22,2012). The cabinet said Art.243T which was in force since 1993 was not found to have infringed on the rights of Nagas as enshrined in Article 371A. It reiterated that holding of elections to ULBs with
Reports said volunteers of Zeliangrong Youth Front (ZYF) and Zeliangrong Baudi (ZB) in Tamenglong district locked down some government offices. Meanwhile, security has been beefed up across Naga dominated hill districts.
Centre submits report
The Home Ministry has submitted a report to
the Election Commission regarding the “ongoing tension and grave law and order situation” prevailing in Manipur, which is suffering from an economic blockade for more than 60 days. A senior official said they had given a status report to the EC so that the latter could “independently make an assessment of the situation” in connection with the coming elections in the State. The official said the EC had asked the Home Ministry for Central forces and had asked for an assessment in the wake of the prevailing situation. “The report is in response to the EC’s demand for Central forces,” said the official. The Centre had earlier pulled up the Congress-led Manipur government for its failure to resolve the continuous blockade of the national highway by Naga groups.
33% women reservation would not infringe on Article 371A. (3)On whether withholding polls to ULBs would infringe upon Article 371A as maintained earlier by the state government, would stand legal scrutiny, since 25% reservation was already provided by the government in VDBs : The cabinet maintained that withholding elections to ULBs since the last ten years had adverse effect on towns and municipalities in matters of development and local selfgovernance and therefore, keeping elections on hold would “do more harm than good to these ULBs.” (4) On whether civic polls have anything to do with traditional practices of Nagas as townships under municipalities , (which the cabinet described as “new concepts”) had nothing to do with traditional or customary practices of Nagas.: the cabinet decided to have more consultations with the tribal organisations in the days to come “ for better understanding”.
EC holds meet to review its poll preparedness New Delhi, Jan 3 (PTI): With announcement of assembly elections to five states set to be made any day now, the Election Commission of India (ECI) Tuesday held a meeting with CEOs of poll-bound Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Manipur and Goa to fine tune the arrangements. The law and order situation in Manipur due to road blockade by some Naga groups was the focus of attention of the Commission in today’s meeting, sources said. At the meeting, the assessment of the law and order situation, deployment of polling personnel, safety and electronic voting machines and strict implementation of the model code of conduct also came up for discussion.

always be cherished. Further, Konyak urged upon the people of Nagaland availing the services to cooperate with the personnel of GVHL reminding them that unlike motor vehicle transportation, many a times air service regulations, weather conditions, technical and state emergency requirement may restrict the service causing last minute cancellation. He asked the commuters to bear with such inconvenience caused out of such situations at times. Paiwang also informed that the government of India facilitates operation of State Helicopter Service under subsidised scheme from the ministry of Home Affairs. In view of the reviewed subsidy categorisa-
tion by the GoI for State Helicopter Operation, the state government cannot exceed the maximum flying hours guaranteed per month due to financial implications, Konyak cited. He also said that the terms and guidelines of the subsidy scheme being granted to normal sortie commuters and medical or patient evacuation have to be strictly adhered to reminding that deviation would attract forfeiture of the subsidy claims. “Other than that, all requisition/chartering by VIPs and VVIPs and any agency; individual or group would have to bear the full date to qualify for continuation of the State Helicopter Service under the Scheme” Paiwang informed. The minister also
said that CM, T. R. Zeliang keenly monitors the service being rendered to the people of Nagaland by the State Helicopter Service for ensuring that the services were utilised in maximum for the benefit of the people of the state. Also speaking on the occasion, the deputy chief of GVHL, Captain Rajbir Singh Brinda thanked the Nagaland government for giving them opportunity to serve the people and assured that the company would carry out the task with utmost responsibility living up to their expectations. He remarked that their sole purpose in Nagaland would be to serve the people ensuring that besides routine services to the forward areas in the state, medical evacuation by helicopter gets due support and attention. Highlighting briefly on the history of the company, Rajbir described GVHL as the most respected and largest helicopter operator in the country’s private sector with a fleet of 26 helicopters comprising of both single and twin engine helicopters with six more to be inducted this year. “The fleet includes AW 139, Bell 412, EC 155, EC135, H 130 and AS350 B3 and very soon to be inducting a first of its kind helicopter AW169 in India to be deployed for the Government

and ensure action against the two legislators who are members of the Meghalaya United Alliance government,” they added. G U WA H AT I , Jan 3 (Agencies): When it comes to health schemes or insurance coverage in rural Assam, the state does not fare too well. The latest National Family Health Survey-4 ( 2015-16 ) revealed only 10.4% of the households have at least one member covered under any such scheme. The state government, which rolled out the ambitious Atal Amrit Abhiyan (AAA) last Sunday, now faces a daunting task to improve the coverage. The AAA scheme aims to cover below and above poverty line (BPL/APL) families whose annual income is below Rs 5 lakh. Assam’s 10.4% was only an 8% in-

Akhilesh meets ousted ‘Netaji’
L u c k n ow, J a n 3 (AGENCIES): Even as the battle over the party’s symbol ‘cycle’ continued unabated, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav met his father and Samajwadi Party patron Mulayam Singh Yadav at the latter’s residence here amid speculation of a patch-up on the cards. Mulayam’s younger brother and close confidante Shivpal Yadav, however, said he was not aware about any such meeting, but added that he would definitely attend it if invited. This came as reports earlier suggested that the fatherson duo had a telephonic conversation. Akhilesh met his father at the latter’s residence at 5 Kalidas Marg on Tuesday. The meeting lasted three hours. Mulayam later called for his son, as well as former ministers Narad Rai and Om Prakash, both of whom had been dismissed by Akhilesh, amid rumours that the previous yielded no result. T h e Ya d av s h ave plunged their party into a crisis just as Uttar Pradesh
gets ready to vote. Akhilesh has, with the backing of thousands of party workers, replaced his father as the party chief. The 77-year-old Mulayam has said that’s a no-go and that his camp-considerably smaller than that of his son’s --is what should be recognised as the legitimate Samajwadi Party. M u l aya m m e t t h e Election Commission on Monday to demand that the party symbol--the cycle-remained his property. However, earlier in the day, Akhilesh’s mentor and uncle Ram Gopal Yadav met the Election Commission to present a counter-claim. He claimed that 90% party members were with them. At a party gathering on Sunday in Lucknow, Akhilesh was named president of the Samajwadi Party. He then pushed his father into retirement by declaring that he would now function as patron and mentor. Mulayam and his aides like Shivpal Yadav and Amar Singh have insisted his faction is the legit Samajwadi Party.

the APO, various tribal hohos and other Naga civil societies. KVYO further cautioned that any candidate filing nomination papers without honouring the KVC and APO resolution would be doing so at their own risk and he or she would be responsible entirely. T VCU : Tu e n s a n g Village Citizens’ Union (TVCU) said that it has at an emergency meeting on December 30, 2016 resolved to reaffirm its previous stand to oppose 33% women reservation in the forthcoming town council election. In a memorandum addressed to the state chief minister, the TVCU president, H Wongto, said
“Article 371(A) should be brought back to its place for proper governance of the Naga society” and appealed to the state government to hear the voice of the Naga people. The union stated that it has also resolved not to allow conduct of town council election in Tuensang territories. TVCU said it further resolved that all political parties, intending candidates refrain from nominating any candidates in the town council elections. Arunachal’s musical chair
I
t was long expected that unprincipled defectors who had became willing pawns in the game of destabilisation in Arunchal Pradesh would continue to cross sides at the drop of a hat for their own selfish ambitions. The coming to power of the BJP government comprising of some 33 defectors, that included present chief minister Pema Khandu, who have changed sides as many as four times since November 2015 speaks very poorly about the morality of the elected representatives. The then Congress government under Nabam Tuki was dethroned by defectors headed by Kalikho Pul with support from the BJP and independents. After Supreme Court restored back the Tuki as chief minister of the Congress government to the same position as on December 15,2015. Defectors then ditched the NEDA and returned back to the Congress headed by Taki. The Congress then formed the government headed by Pema Khandu who had been sworn-in as chief minister on July 17, 2016. Pema Khandu then He was the third chief minister in the year 2016. For the record, the present ministry is the fourth since November 2015. After becoming the chief minister of a restored Congress government, Khandu on September 16 2016 spectacularly led 43 of his 44 Congress Party members over to the side of the People’s Party of Arunachal(PPA). This was the second time that Congress defectors joined the PPA. However, on December 31, 2016, Pema Khandu joined BJP along with 32 other MLAs from PPA after he along with five others were expelled from the PPA. For the BJP, which has been parroting a lot about national security, the manner in which the party indulged in political skulduggery does not augur well. For Modi too, who is being portrayed as an adherent of good governance, such low grade politics undertaken by his party only sullies his reputation. Perhaps when it came to fulfilling the BJP’s vow of a ‘mukht-Congress Bharat’, the skulduggery may have made Modi look the other way. The Khandu-led faction, the same bunch that had taken late Kalikho Pul on the garden path to form a government of defectors, have done it again by ditching the PPA, when almost the entire lot of Congress turncoats transferred their “loyalty” to the BJP. The nine-month long immoral, unprincipled and promiscuous political drama in Arunachal Pradesh has soiled the image of the state. Arunachal has exemplified the worst scenario among north eastern states that are totally dependent upon central funds for sustenance and which makes the elected members vulnerable to the arm twisting or allurements from the central leaders. Even at the worst of situations, the legislators of Arunchal Pradesh could be “forgiven” for switching sides once but when they did it four times within six months there is no word to describe the nadir of immorality that has been reached. Since the north east is considered to be a sensitive border region, the governors should be absolutely impartial in dealing with the ayarams and gaya-rams of Indian politics in order to ensure trust and confidence in the system. It is also time that political chameleons are isolated and defeated in order to cleanse the system.
DailyDevotion Clouds and Darkness Clouds and darkness surround Him… —Psalm 97:2 A person who has not been born again by the Spirit of God will tell you that the teachings of Jesus are simple. But when he is baptized by the Holy Spirit, he finds that “clouds and darkness surround Him….” When we come into close contact with the teachings of Jesus Christ we have our first realization of this. The only possible way to have full understanding of the teachings of Jesus is through the light of the Spirit of God shining inside us. If we have never had the experience of taking our casual, religious shoes off our casual, religious feet— getting rid of all the excessive informality with which we approach God— it is questionable whether we have ever stood in His presence. The people who are flippant and disrespectful in their approach to God are those who have never been introduced to Jesus Christ. Only after the amazing delight and liberty of realizing what Jesus Christ does, comes the impenetrable “darkness” of realizing who He is. Jesus said, “The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life” (John 6:63). Once, the Bible was just so many words to us — “clouds and darkness”— then, suddenly, the words become spirit and life because Jesus re-speaks them to us when our circumstances make the words new. That is the way God speaks to us; not by visions and dreams, but by words. When a man gets to God, it is by the most simple way— words.

Post-mortem On women’s reservation
e begin the New Year with the stage set for a confrontation between the Naga Mothers Association and the Joint Action Committee on Women’s Rights on the one hand and the various Tribal Organisations on the other; with the State Government, on the sidelines, imitating Pilate, of The Bible; absolving itself of all blame with the excuse that it is only implementing the law. First off, I would like to congratulate the N.M.A. /J.A.C.W.R. for refusing the offer of the Tribal Organisations for nominated members to the various civic bodies. If you accomplish nothing more, you have accomplished much in closing an avenue for our elected “leaders” to exercise their superpowers of sycophancy and nepotism; and for which all right thinking people of Nagaland will always be grateful to you. Next, I would like to point out to the N.M.A./J.A.C.W.R and the Tribal Organisations that you are not on opposing sides of the dispute. You are both fighting for different aspects of the Common Good. You are like the two otters that jointly managed to catch a large fish (Jataka Tales- Buddhist stories) and were arguing about how to divide it. Just then, a fox happened by and asked them what the dispute was about. On being apprised of the problem, he asked the otters if they would accept his judgement on the dispute. The otters agreed, whereupon, the fox cut off the head of the fish and gave it to one otter; he then cut off the tail of the fish and
T
Nagaland Post, Dimapur Wednesday, January 4, 2017
gave it to the other. The otters felt that the fox had been fair so far, and asked the fox how he was going to divide the body of the fish? The fox said that the body was payment for his role in adjudicating the dispute and walked away with it. So, no matter what the result of your dispute, the Corrupt Government is going to profit by it. For them it’s, “Heads, I win, Tails you lose.” I would suggest that the N.M.A/J.A.C.W.R. get together with the Tribal Organisations, without the Government, come to a settlement and then jointly approach the Government with the terms of your joint agreement. In an earlier write-up, I had floated the idea of creating “super constituencies” for women; I now resubmit my proposal with a modification. 1. Men and women should be free to contest from all constituencies. 2. Every two constituencies should be combined to form a “super constituency” wherein only women will be allowed to contest. With this arrangement, even if all women candidates who contested in the open constituencies lost, the assured number of women from the “super constituencies” will reach the magical number of 33% of the total. For the Tribal Organisations, I know that your objections are going to fall on deaf ears, because the present government has eyes only for the Municipal Funds; and if you take your protests to the streets, T.R. “Water Cannon” Zeliang will only be too happy
to show you the tin-pot dictator, banana republic ruling, side of his personality; and innocent people are going to suffer. So, to the Tribal Organisations, I would like to suggest the following:Don’t attack the women’s group or the government; attack the law. The Women’s Reservation Bill may be an example of Positive/Reverse Discrimination to enable women to attain equal footing in a male dominated society. But instead of arguing whether or not it infringes on Article 371(A) of the Constitution, attack it on the grounds that it is a discriminatory law against a major section of the population (the males of society) and also against the entire electorate, not in Nagaland alone, but across India. I am no lawyer, but common sense dictates that the Bill can be attacked on the following grounds:1. If the constituencies reserved for women are fixed; it deprives, forever, the eligible males of the constituency of their constitutional right to stand for office. 2. If the constituencies reserved for women are rotated, no matter what the schedule; it deprives the electorate of the constituency their right to accountability from their elected candidates. For, in the next election, there will be a different candidate. 3.Most importantly, if the constituencies are rotated, it lessens the obligation of the elected candidates (both men and women) to work for the constituency from which they were elected; and increases the pressure upon them to work for
the next constituency where they hope to contest. Thereby defeating the basic purpose of Democracy itself; which is that, the elected person works for the benefit of those who elected him/ her to office. I am certain that many more brilliant minds than mine, both in Nagaland and India, have thought of the above arguments, and many more, against The Women’s Reservation Bill; but it is their fear of appearing Politically Incorrect which has restrained them from speaking out; but as we have seen from the results of the American Presidential Elections, Political Correctness can only go so far, and too much of a good thing sickens people. There are many people across India who feel the same, for we all know that the bill is just another example of Congress (I) vote bank politics; in the guise of social empowerment; and if the Naga Tribal Organisations do file an appeal with the High Court, on the grounds of general discrimination, I’m sure you will gather mass support across India. And with the right Advocate, you could get a Stay on the excuse of an election that the Government of Nagaland is hell bent on conducting. The N.M.A./J.A.C.W.R. must rein in their radical members, as must the Tribal Organisations with their reactionary members. Remember, if we honestly try hard enough, we can always find “a humane solution to human problems.” GOD SAVE MY NAGALAND Kahuto Chishi Sumi, G.B. Hevishe Village, Dimapur, (Kahuto107@gmail.com)
T
he proposed poll of February 1, 2017 to elect the local civic bodies in Nagaland advisably should not be delayed at any cost as it is long overdue. There is neither opposition nor objection from any corner to the election that is already announced safe for the 33% women reservation that is not acceptable. The contention is only over the fault yet again committed by the opposition less government of Nagaland headed by T. R. Zeliang with a hell bent anti-people intention. When the non acceptability of implementing 33% women reservation in the election to the local civic bodies is vocally expressed by the people in so much as such practice in our Naga society is not practicable and apparently over rides the extraordinarily ensured special provision of Article 371(a), why and under what special motive is the Government of Nagaland stubbornly forging ahead creating hell of every situation. Naga traditional and customary practices are already constitutionally protected if not modified by the bill passed in the recent Nagaland Legislative Assembly’s session. If any better status for the state of Nagaland than the existing Article 371(a) be made to achieved by this record making opposition less Government of Nagaland then why all these senseless deeds of demeaning the prized Article 371(a)? Neutralizing the existing special constitutional status of Nagaland and its people while being in power and on the helm of all authorities in managing the state of affairs of Nagaland is no achievement big at all but only so unfortunate and vision less. It is high time the present Government of Nagaland realizes its many frequent actions of roadblocks to the well being of the people of Nagaland and this 33% women reservation being one of them and as reviled deserves to be scrapped sooner than later. Speech of gen. (Retd.) Viyalie Metha on 54th Naga Army Day
he commander-inChief, all Rank and File of the Naga Army, Fellow National Workers, Ladies and Gentlemen. On this auspicious day of the 54th Naga Army Raising Day, I extend my heartiest greetings to all the Rank and File of the Naga Army for a prosperous New Year, 2017 and call upon each and everyone to give thanks to Almighty God for all blessings He had bestowed us all. Looking back over 62 years past (1954-2016) of conflict with India, in the beginning Naga Youth voluntarily stood up to defend our country from the invad-
ing Indian Armed Forces. Our Youth firstly organized themselves as VOLUNTEERS. And after sometime when the situation became more demanding as enemy forces intensified; Volunteer was renamed and called SAFE GUARD and the Indian Army had the first heavy encounter on June 11, 1956 in Kohima. Later on the Naga Home Guard was made full-fledge standing Army as NAGA ARMY on 3rd January, 1964. Thus the Naga Army fought and defend our country against the invading Indian Army till an International Ceasefire Agreement was signed between the Federal Government of Nagaland and Government of India in
1964, ending nearly ten years of India’s undeclared war against Nagaland. During the war, the Indian Armed Forces made the Naga Civilians their first target. Our civilians were tortured, put in jail, forced to carry their ration and war materials, mass arrest of villagers, mass flogging and villages hoarded into concentration camps were a common practice. Our houses, granaries and churches burnt; our crops destroyed. Our women molested, raped, maimed and even killed; old men, old women and children were beaten with gun butts and kicked; children mishandled and thrown to death. More than 100,000
Naga civilian lost their lives due to starvation, shooting, shelling, and bombardment of civilian populated areas. India expected and hope to drive out Naga civilian as refugees elsewhere by committing heinous war crime against Nagaland. But our people were resilient and reclaimed our respective villages. In the Indo-Naga war, the Naga Army maintained clean and unblemished record in accordance with the UN Resolution of Geneva Convention 1949. That is: 1. The Naga Army never kill or harass any Indian civilian. 2. Never tortured or mistreated enemy prisoners of war.
Nationalism, identity crisis and the masses
E
Scrap the 33% women reservation reviled as it is
arly nineteenth century was the dawn of the colonial power in the Northeast region; it was a period when the so-called anthropological primitives/savages/ aboriginals open up to the new era of the so-called civilization. Since then transition and transformation in community life, traditional institution, village autonomy, tribal economy and religion were shattered from its pristine past. Colonial intervention in the region for that matter structured the already existing culture to suit the colonial traders and merchants, what was left for the people was free labour, unproductive tool and his fellow confused villagers. What one might argue at this point is the fact that the project of civilization or the project of modernity also came with the British colonial. Though this maybe empirically true, it can be argued that the project was in itself appropriated to its own advantages and sowed the seeds of the crisis that we are facing today. Few major changes that came about were legal prohibition of head hunting, cartographing territorial boundaries, integration of villages and tribal communities into state-like administration, village elders were recruited into new political institution that would directly represent the people to the state, in the meantime mass conversion into Christianity was taken place all over the Naga Hills. For the Nagas it was a period of ‘historical puzzles’ while for the colonial it was a period of accumulation. This transformation that has taken place during the colonial period remains the watershed in the identity formation among the Nagas.
Ideas of nationalism for that matter became quit prominent and vocalised along with Indian Nationalism. However, what Naga nationalism had face in post-independence India is quite a different story for which I need not narrate the historical event for the dice are already loaded. What is interesting is the fact that Naga Nationalism over the sixty years has become a question of survival which has resulted into the formation of various factions based on ideological and political differences. To quote Antonio Gramsci ‘Ideology is simply an illusory, that played no role in revolution, and had character of manipulation’. Naga nationalism today is also a religious project, but it is very clear that throughout the historical epoch, religion have always blurred the objective history of the people. Karl Marx in his writing mentioned very clear that religion is the opium of the masses; it makes the masses to remain unaware of the reality, and this is how capitalist class appropriated the labour of proletariat. Today Naga nationalism has become more an illusory project as well as opium. What has become of this is the contestation of the new politics of identity. Inter-tribal identity discourse within the Nagas is the crisis that the state and its people need to seriously ponder. Thus before reengaging on Nationalism, identity crisis within the Nagas needs to be resolved. The politics of representation and the politics of identity needs to be revisited and cannot brush aside in the name of economic development. As a community with diverse tribes, each tribe within the state has to be balance on the ground
of humanity and not politics. The question of ‘who is indigenous’ and ‘who is not indigenous’ is a matter of serious concerned that needs to be theoretically and historically examine and not be decided by the elite who runs the state government, for this can undermined the already marginalised community in the state. The question and the politics of reservation in the state government should also be analyse and interrogated with seriousness in due time. Since economic infrastructure determined the socio-cultural and political milieu of the state, the economic project hugely determines the nature of identity crisis in our state. Unless the project of development is planned towards solving the problem of humanity there will always be a leak for the elites to siphon the public economic wealth. Dimapur lynching 2015 is a serious example of how public frustration can become, inter-tribal violence that occur recently in Kiphire district, and the ongoing protest movement of the ACAUT against corruption and illegal taxation raise the questions on how the state have seriously failed to address the burning question that vex our state today. Though we tend to live imaginatively and awkwardly in post-independence project under marginalisation, militarization and exclusion, the larger issue at hand at home for us today is to seriously ponder upon the division, categorization, tribalism, class inequality, the role of the state and civil society needs to be seriously interrogated. Thepfusalie Theunuo, (thepfusalietheunuo@gmail.com)
3. Honour our words and maintained restraint and not violated the Ceasefire Agreement till today. The Federal Government of Nagaland adheres to the policy of peace and nonviolence. We do not want any more bloodshed in our land. However lack of reprisal over all provocative activities of the enemy should not be taken as a weakness but is an opportunity to prepare ourselves for the eventualities that will sooner or later be answerable by India. As true soldier of the Nation, The Naga Army had not only braved the mighty enemy forces but also achieved many successful Alee Commands tread-
ing bare-footed to Pakistan and China. Our Nation is proud today because of your sacrifices. In the course of this journey many precious lives were lost and today we remember their sufferings and sacrifices for our Nation and for us. Above all, the Naga Army had done what was expected of you. So once again I say ‘well done’ Naga Army. Nagaland withstood the odds and stands as a Nation today because of your bravery, dedication and sacrifice. Let the same integrity, intrepidity and perseverance prevail in you to uphold and defend our Nation. So God may continue to bless and keep Nagaland. KUKNALIM

On the New Year resolutions
Sir,
New year Resolutions: A phenomena where one becomes aware that there are two kinds of people in this world:1)Those who make new year resolutions,(2)And those who don’t. The second kind always sneer at the first kind, saying that only the stupid would fall into the same trap year after year. In a way they are right of course, after all we make resolutions about things we like too much (knowing that its bad) and want to give up, or we make resolutions about things we know we should do, but don’t. Sadly by the very nature of things we often fail in both these endeavours. An instance where some friends who had given up smoking and having Guthka -Teez & Talab as last year’s New Year’s resolution; Now some hadn’t smoked for two months, some for two weeks and some for two days, Silly, but the funny thing is even the two-dayers were proud of themselves. But meet them after a while and they will be looking more relaxed, a cigarette between their lips or the stench of Teez in their breath. So what’s with resolutions if we ain’t keeping it? Shall we keep on making resolutions knowing the very fact that we might not and in all probability fail to adhere with our resolution? It’s like a losing battle, but that doesn’t mean I’m giving up trying to wake up early. People who do not make resolutions and laugh at us for making them, are wrong. It’s noble to make resolutions, yes ‘Noble’. Giving in to temptation or not being self-disciplined is part of human nature and you aren’t unique when you give in to that secret khola cigarette, or the occasional ‘ekso bis and tin so’ It’s only ‘expected’ that most of the time we will so lose our way. But unless we set ourselves to change this by making a determined effort, how will we Humans change at all?? This is where New year’s resolution kick in. We may set out to do ten things and succeed in only One, but that’s one more than the man who doesn’t try at all. Plus our failure with the other nine may make us more determined to do better the next time around. So let’s take a broader picture, people like us who make New Year resolutions are the ones who push civilization a little at a time. If everyone was happy and contented with the way they were, we would still be crawling in the Dark Age!! Bonathung Shitio

PM asks scientists to keep eye on rise of disruptive tech
Prime Minister Narendra Modi being presented a memento at the inauguration of 104th Indian Science Congress programme on Tuesday. (PTI)
Tirupati, Jan 3 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday exhorted scientists to keep an eye on the rise of disruptive technologies even as he underlined government’s commitment to supporting different streams ranging from fundamental science to applied science with emphasis on innovations. In his address at the inauguration of the 104th session of the Indian Science Congress, Modi listed “rapid global rise of CyberPhysical Systems” as one important area that needed to be addressed, saying it has potential to pose unprecedented challenges and stresses on the demographic dividend. “But we can turn it into a huge opportunity by research, training and skilling in robotics, artificial intelligence, digital manufacturing, big data
analysis, deep learning, quantum communication and Internet-of-Things. “There is a need to develop and exploit these technologies in services and manufacturing sectors; in agriculture, water, energy and traffic management, health, environment, security, infrastructure and Geo Information Systems, financial systems and in combating crime,” he said. The speed and scale of changes encountered today are unprecedented, he said. “My government is committed to supporting different streams of scientific knowledge; ranging from fundamental science to applied science with emphasis on innovations. Some of these important challenges are in the key sectors of clean water & energy, food, environment, climate, security,

and health care,” he said. Building a strong science and technology infrastructure that is accessible to academia, start-ups, industry and R&D labs is a priority of the government, he said, adding they need to address problems of ease of access, maintenance, redundancy and duplication of expensive equipments in scientific institutions. “The desirability of establishing professionally managed, large regional centres in PPP mode housing high value scientific equipment should be examined,” he said. Noting that SCOPUS database indicates that India ranks sixth in the world with respect to scientific publications and is growing at a rate of about 14 per cent against the world average of about 4 per cent, Modi said by 2030 India will be among the top three countries in science and technology and will be among the most attractive destinations for the best talent in the world. Scopus is a bibliographic database containing abstracts and citations for academic journal articles. He asked institutions to consider inviting outstanding scientists from abroad including NRIs for long term research associations. “We should involve foreign and NRI PhD students in post-doctoral research in our projects,” he said.

Mumbai, Jan 3 (Agencies): Banks, led by market leader State Bank of India, announced sharp cuts to their lending rates after a recent surge in deposits, raising hopes that lower borrowing costs will help spark credit growth in Asia’s third-largest economy. SBI, the country’s biggest lender by assets, said on Sunday it had cut its so-called marginal cost of funds-based lending rates (MCLR) by 90 basis points, while unveiling new products for mortgage loans, one of the fastest-growing areas. Several other lenders including Punjab National Bank, Union Bank of India, Kotak Mahindra Bank and Dena Bank also cut their lending rates by 45-90 basis points across tenures. Analysts expect more lenders to follow suit. Banks have received

New Delhi, Jan 3 (PTI): Gold prices edged higher by Rs 50 to Rs 28,350 per 10 grams today, tracking a firm trend overseas amid scattered buying by local jewellers. Silver also recovered by Rs 300 to Rs 39,600 per kg due to increased offtake by industrial units and coin makers. Apart from a firm global trend, traders said, mild buying by local jewellers at the domestic spot market mainly brought about the upmove. Globally, gold rose 0.50 per cent to USD 1,156.70 an ounce in Singapore. In the national capital, gold of 99.9 per cent and 99.5 per cent purity were up by Rs 50 each to Rs 28,350 and Rs 28,200 per 10 grams, respectively. Sovereign, however, remained flat at Rs 24,000 per piece of eight grams in limited deals. They have especially been told to proactively resolve the problems in rural and remote areas,” Modi had said. According to the statement, banks should follow need-based approach for supply of currency as rural requirements could vary from district to district, depending on variations in the rural and urban mix of each district. Each district has different CASA deposits shares and deposit accounts. RBI has already mapped each district of every state and also made estimates of the requirement.

Syrian rebels suspend talks against government violations
BEIRUT, JAN 3 (AGENCIES): Pro-government forces pressed on with their offensive targeting the water-rich Barada Valley northwest of the Syrian capital Tuesday, as a group of Syrian rebel groups said they were suspending talks about planned peace negotiations because of what they describe as ongoing government violations of a four-day old cease-fire deal. The cease-fire, brokered by Russia and Turkey, is to be followed by talks to be held later this month in the Kazakh capital of Astana, between mainstream rebel factions and government representatives. The U.N. Security Council on Saturday unanimously adopted a resolution supporting efforts by Russia and Turkey, which support opposing sides of the Syria war, to end the nearly six-year conflict in Syria and jump-start peace negotiations.
Three killed in IS attack on police station in Samarra B ag h da d, J A N 3 (AGENCIES): An attack carried out by the Islamic State group on a police station in the Iraqi city of Samarra has left three members of the force dead, officers said on Tuesday. According to security officials from Salaheddin province, in which Samarra is located, a group of four gunmen wearing suicide vests stormed Mutawakil police station in Samarra late on Monday. They holed themselves up in the police station and were subsequently besieged by Iraqi security forces, leading to clashes that lasted several hours. “The exchange of fire started around 9:00 pm (local time) and lasted way past midnight,” a Samarra police colonel told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity. “The four suicide bombers who attacked the police station were all killed,” the colonel said.

But the country-wide cease-fire is looking increasingly shaky, with opposition factions angered in particular about the ongoing military offensive in the strategically-important Barada Valley outside Damascus. In a statement posted late Monday, 10 rebel factions said they are suspending any talks related to the Astana negotiations or any
discussions related to the cease-fire “until it is fully implemented.’’ They include the powerful Army of Islam group which operates mainly outside the Syrian capital. It said the violations in the Barada Valley are continuing and ``threaten the lives of hundreds of thousands of residents.’’ The statement also said that the opposition will consider any military changes made
Turkish police detain wife of Istanbul night club attacker
Mashrapov
ISTANBUL, JAN 3 (AGENCIES): The Turkish police have detained the wife of the Istanbul nightclub attacker who is still on the run two days after he shot dead 39 people, local media reported on Tuesday. IHA news agency said the gunman came to Turkey from Kyrgyzstan on Nov 20 with his wife and two children, and the wife was detained in the central Anatolian city of Konya. According to IHA report, the wife told the police that she learned the attack from television reports and she had no information about his hus-

band being an Islamic State sympathizer. The militant group claimed responsibility for the assault on Reina nightclub in central Istanbul, in which the gunman opened fire at hundreds of people celebrating the New Year, killing 39, 25 of whom have been identified as foreign nationals, and injuring 69 others, with four discharged from hospital now. As the manhunt was continuing, Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus, following a cabinet meeting in Ankara on Monday, said police had got the fingerprints and descriptions of the attacker. Kurtulmus claimed that the Turkish authorities would soon be able to identify the attacker and “reveal the power behind him.”
on the ground to be a serious violation of the ceasefire agreement. The Barada Valley, which is controlled by rebels and is surrounded by progovernment forces including the Lebanese Hezbollah group, is the primary source of water for Damascus and its surrounding region. But recent unrest there has resulted in a severe water shortage in the capital since December 22. Images from the valley’s Media Center indicate its Ain al-Fijeh spring and water processing facility have been destroyed, apparently in airstrikes. The government says rebels spoiled the water source with diesel fuel, forcing it to cut supplies to the capital. The cease-fire agreement is supposed to pave the way for the government and the opposition to meet for talks for the first time in nearly a year in Astana in the second half of January.
China confirms its carrier held drills in South China Sea BEIJING, JAN 3 (AGENCIES): China has confirmed that its aircraft carrier has for the first time conducted drills in the South China Sea with a formation of other warships and fighter jets, a move that could raise concerns among its neighbours. The defence ministry said several J-15 fighter jets took off and landed from the flight deck of the aircraft carrier Liaoning on Monday. The Liaoning, China’s first and only aircraft carrier, sailed into the South China Sea last week. The confirmation comes days after Taiwan’s defence ministry said the carrier and five other warships had passed south of Taiwan. The self-ruled island deployed fighter jets to monitor the fleet. China calls the drills part of a routine open-sea exercise, but they could add to tensions between Beijing and Taipei.
Japan representative to Taiwan says bilateral ties at their ‘best’ TAIPEI, JAN 3 (AGENCIES): Ties between Japanand Taiwan are at their best, Japan’s representative on the island said on Tuesday, at the unveiling of a new name for Japan’s representative office that has riled China. Japan and Taiwan have extensive business ties and also share concern about an increasingly assertive mainland China. But Japan, like most of the world’s countries, maintains only informal relations with Taiwan, which Beijing regards as a renegade province. Japan has diplomatic ties with Beijing - recognising China’s position that there is only “one China” and Taiwan is part of it. “Currently Japan-Taiwan relations are at their best, but we should take further steps to develop a good relationship,” Mikio Numata, Japan’s chief representative, said at a ceremony with Taiwan’s vice foreign minister, Leo Lee.
56 killed, many beheaded, in grisly Brazil prison riot S AO PAU LO, JA N 3 (AGENCIES): A prison riot in the Brazilian Amazon has left at least 56 people dead with some bodies decapitated and burned, officials said. The riot erupted on Sunday afternoon and lasted for 17 hours in the Anisio Jobim Penitentiary Complex (Compaj) in Manaus, the capital of Amazonas state. The rioters took 12 guards hostage and a still unconfirmed number of prisoners escaped. “What happened in Compaj is another chapter of the war that drug trafficking imposes in this country and shows that this problem cannot be faced only by [Brazilian] states,” said Sergio Fontes, head of public security for Amazonas. He called the riot “the
worst massacre in the history of the state’s penitentiary system”. Fontes’s department lowered the death toll to 56 from an earlier count of 60. Fontes said at a press conference the state requested support from Brazil’s federal government for help to combat drug trafficking and strengthen the security of prison units. “It is not only a problem of the penitentiary system and it is not an isolated case in the country, but much greater since the dispute inside the prisons is an extension of the war that also happens outside,” he said. The killings occurred over a feud between rival criminal factions, the Sao Paulo-based First Capital Command (PCC) and a lo-
cal Amazonian crime group Family of the North (FDN) who are engaged in a longterm dispute over controlling prisons, drug trafficking routes, and territory in the region reeling from drug violence. “One group is trying to eliminate the other so they can dominate the prison system,” said Marluce da Costa Sousa, coordinator of the Amazonas state branch of Pastoral Carceraria - a prisoner advocate group linked to the Catholic church. “It’s about profit,” she told Al Jazeera.
Mikio Numata
The ceremony was to officially change the name of Japan’s office on the island - its de facto embassy - to the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association. It had been called the “Interchange Association, Japan” since it was set up in the 1970s. Since then, Japan has grown to become Taiwan’s third largest trading partner and second largest source of foreign tourists. China has criticised the name change because it includes the word “Taiwan”. Its foreign ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang repeated opposition on
Tuesday, saying China had lodged representations with Japan about it. Japan should “not send any wrong messages to the Taiwan authorities or the international community and not cause new interference in Sino-Japan ties”, Geng told reporters in Beijing. Numata said the name change was to make it clear who the parties were. “The goal was to put ‘Japan’ and ‘Taiwan’ in the name to clearly point out the counterparts of the exchange,” he said. Many major countries, including the United States and Britain, operate representative offices in Taiwan under various names. The US mission is the American Institute in Taiwan. Business relations between the mainland and Taiwan have grown significantly over the past decade but tension has increased since the island elected a president from an independence-leaning party last year.
S.Korean president refuses to testify in impeachment trial SEOUL, JAN 3 (AGENCIES): South Korean President Park Geun-hye has refused to testify in a case that will decide her future following her impeachment over a corruption scandal, forcing the Constitutional Court to delay the start of oral arguments. With Park refusing to appear today, the nine-
justice court asked her to testify on Thursday. Her no-show brought criticism from lawmakers, who serve as prosecutors during the presidential impeachment trial. The court says it cannot force Park to appear in the hearings, which under law can proceed without her if she refuses for a second time to appear.

Manchester duo start 2017 with win
Manchester United’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic, 2nd right, shoots and scores his side’s second goal of the game during their against West Ham on Monday. (AP/PTI)
Lo n d o n, Ja n 3 (Agencies): English football side Manchester United began 2017 with an encouraging 2-0 win over West Ham in a Premier League match. United beat West Ham in a match where the quality of the officiating played a major, if not decisive, role. We s t H a m w e r e reduced to 10 men at the 15-minute mark on Monday as referee Mike Dean showed the red card to Sofiane Feghouli for an arguable offence. Even so, the hosts held off the star-studded United team until the second half. Substitute Juan Mata put the visitors up 1-0 with a goal at the hour mark and Zlatan Ibrahimovic got the second in the 78th minute from apparently an offside position. With their sixth win in a row, sixth-placed United have 39 points, the same as Tottenham Hotspurs, who are ahead
on goal differential ahead of Wednesday’s London derby with Chelsea. Ten-man Man City put Burnley to the sword as they closed the deficit on league leaders Chelsea to seven points with a 2-1 win. Fernandinho saw red for City but goals from Gael Clichy and Sergio Aguero were enough to see them home despite Ben Mee pulling one back for the Clarets, who lie 11th in the league table. Burnley were given the kind of advantage they woud have been having dreams about the night before, as City’s Fernandinho was show red for a two-footed lunge on Johann Berg Gudmundsson after the half hour. Despite Burnley’s man advantage it was City that broke the deadlock. Clichy picked up possession at the top of the box, before shifting past Scott Arfield, moving theball onto his right foot, and firing home
past Tom Heaton into the bottom corner. Less than five minutes later they added a second. Raheem Sterling found himself in on goal, but fluffed the shot, only to see it fall to Aguero to finish from an acute angle. Burnley kept themslves in the game with a response from Mee. Sam Vokes directed a header towards the net, which Aguero cleared off the line, but only as far as Mee to crash a shot in off the underside of the bar, with the goal awarded through the goal-line technology. But it was to be their last response as City saw out the three points.
Liverpool held by Sunderland
Liverpool dropped two valuable points in their Premier League-title chase as they were held 2-2 by Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. Jurgen Klopp’s Reds were twice in the lead
through goals from Daniel Sturridge and Sadio Mane, but two penalties from Jermain Defoe gave David Moyes’ team a point The result sees Liverpool five points off leaders Chelsea with the Blues having a game in hand. Sunderland are 18th - a point from safety. L ive r p o o l h i t t h e front with an opener from England inter national Sturridge. Poor defending at a corner allowed Dejan Lovren to turn the ball into Sturridge’s path for the striker to loop a header over Vito Mannone and into the far corner. The Black Cats levelled matters from the spot. Didier Ndong burst in between Georgeinio Wijnaldum and Ragnar Klavan with the latter hauling him down for the penalty. Defoe stepped up to slam home his tenth goal of the season. The Reds restored their advantage through Mane. The Senegalese attacker peeled off the left post to finish home after a corner had been flicked on at the near post. But once more Sunderland pegged Pool back with a penalty, with Mane sticking out an arm to block Larsson’s freekick, and Defoe banging home his second penalty of the day. Sourav Ganguly to be next BCCI president NEW DELHI, Jan 3 (Agencies): With the Supreme Court removing Anurag Thakur from the president’s post, former India captain Sourav Ganguly has emerged as the frontrunner to take over as BCCI president as per reports. BCCI is in a fix over who to nominate among its five vice-presidents as the acting chief of the beleaguered cricket body. At the moment, veteran Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) official CK Khanna, who is vicepresident from Central Zone and VP for third time, is the senior most. Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar also expressed his desire to see Ganguly take the top job. “BCCI has got a very good bench strength to take up the bigger roles and one name that comes to my mind is Sourav Ganguly,” said Gavaskar as reported by NDTV. However, observer for DDCA Retd Justice Mukul Mudgal, in a scathing report submitted to Delhi HC, had termed Khanna as a “pernicious influence”. Apart from Khanna, there is Gautam Roy of Assam Cricket Association, who is in his second term as vice president and has been ACA president from early 2000 to 2015. However, both Khanna and Roy have been part of their respective state association for more than a decade and will have to go into compulsory cooling-off period. Ditto for G Ganga Raju, who had a decade long tenure at Andhra CA and may have to go for cooling-off.

Australia run rampant after Warner’s record ton SYDNEY, J a n 3 ( Ag e n c i e s ) : D av i d Warner hit a record century inside one session and his fellow opener Matt Renshaw a maiden hundred over three as Australia reached 365 for three at close of play on the opening day of the third Test against Pakistan on Tuesday. With the series already secure after last week’s victor y in Melbour ne, Australia’s openers gave the hosts the best possible start to their quest for a 3-0 series sweep. Warner reached the hundred mark from 78 balls in 118 minutes to become the fifth batsman to notch up a century before lunch on the first day of a Test. The left-hander was unable to add to his tally of 17 fours before being caught behind off Wahab Riaz for 113 soon after lunch but Renshaw, playing his fourth Test, proved more than capable of taking up the mantle.
David Warner raises his arms to celebrate making 100 runs against Pakistan.
The 20-year-old was knocked to the floor by a sickening blow to his helmet grille from a Mohammad Amir bouncer on 91 but got up to complete his century from 201 balls with eight fours. When stumps were drawn, Renshaw was unbeaten on 167 with Peter Handscomb on 40 not out alongside him in a partnership of 121. As pugnacious as ever, Warner barely hit a false note in his 95-ball innings, hitting the second ball he faced for four and not
letting up until he had run the three runs that secured his 18th Test century. No batsman had ever hit a century in the opening session of a Test match in Australia and only compatriots Victor Trumper, Charles Macartney and Don Bradman as well as Pakistan’s Majid Khan had done it elsewhere. Warner also bettered his own record for the fastest Test century at the SCG, having taken 82 balls to reach the milestone against
West Indies here last year. Renshaw had scored only 25 runs at lunch and stuck with his cautious approach through the second session and into the third, spending seven overs in the 90s before a single gave him his century. The crowd gave him the standing ovation his a p p l i c a t i o n d e s e r ve d and continued to roar their approval at the 10 boundaries that followed as the Queenslander finally threw off the shackles a little.
