Kashmir tense; death toll rises to 32

Protesters throw stones on police during a clash in Srinagar on Monday. (PTI) Sources in Srinagar’s S.M.H.S. Hospital said two civilians with bullet injuries were admitted on Monday afternoon and both were from Bijbehara. “One of them was hit in the stomach and other in his left thigh,” a doctor told IANS requesting anonymity. Police sources said a mob set ablaze a police picket in Lassipora in Pulwama district in south Kashmir. Sopore, Handwara, Bandipora and Baramulla in north Kashmir also witnessed stone throwing incidents. Another police camp was set on fire in north Kashmir’s Sopore town. Normal life across the valley was paralysed for the third day amid strict curfew and a separatist-called shutdown.

Public transport went off the roads. Private cars plied at some places in areas where there were no restrictions. Shops and other businesses remained shut. Government offices and banks were also closed as cellphone internet services remained suspended. As the anger in Kashmir simmered, Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif called for a plebiscite in the “occupied” Jammu and Kashmir. India asked Pakistan to worry more about human rights abuses in parts of Kashmir it controls. Radio Pakistan quoted Sharif as saying that the “massacre of citizens by Indian forces and use of brutal force against Kashmir is regrettable”. In New Delhi, Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju said Pakistan should worry more about human rights violations in the “occupied Kashmir” -- Indian euphemism from Pakistani Kashmir than in the valley. Home Minister Rajnath Singh reached out to political leaders, including Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, and discussed the Kashmir situation. He also spoke to former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. The Kashmir Valley has been on an edge since Friday evening when senior militant commander Wani was killed by security forces. Wani, 22, a new face of Kashmir’s separatist war, was shot dead with two of his associates in a south Kashmir village.

And for the first time, police opened fire hitting two civilians in embattled Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti’s hometown Bijbehara in southern Kashmir, which has accounted for all the deaths bar one since Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani was killed by security forces on Friday. At least 31 civilians and a police driver have been killed in clashes between the security

forces and angry young demonstrators across the Kashmir Valley since Saturday, various informed sources told IANS. But police put the death toll at 23. There were no fresh deaths on Monday. But the sources said nine more casualties were added to the toll after at least three people succumbed to injuries and five who had died earlier were counted on Friday. ing that the Gorkha community in Nagaland organised such get-togethers in Kohima and Dimapur. Further, he called on the students to remain united as it brought strength. Acharya said India was a secular nation and all its citizens enjoyed equal rights and no distinction between those living in cities or villages. The Governor also underscored that the nation should not be segregated along the lines of religion since India is a secular country and there are various laws to protect a person from practicing one’s preferred religion. “We have different languages and culture but we are one nation,” he said. Be wary of weekly bazaar: AKM, MCCI DIMAPUR, JUL 11 (NPN): Ao Students’ Conference (AKM) and the Mokokchung Chamber of Commerce & Industries (MCCI) have appealed to the people of Mokokchung district to remain vigilant against imminent threats posed by the mushrooming of “so-called ‘Weekly Bazaar’ in the district”, especially around the periphery of the district headquarters. In a joint press release, AKM vice president Akummeren Longchar and MCCI general secretary Limalenden Longkumer reminded of the perilous state the ‘Weekly Bazaar’ was taking the fragile local economy to and stressed the urgency of coming together and tackling the issue. They alleged a diabolical nexus between some influential and a sophisticated syndicate of black marketing goons from across the state border working together to destabilize the local economy by hijacking the formal market. Calling upon the people of Mokokchung to be wary of

the traders involved in ‘Weekly Bazaar’ as “they are of dubious origin and identity”, AKM and MCCI said the products sold were of inferior quality and were not inspected or certified by any competent authority. Further, they reminded citizens that by purchasing from those traders, they were encouraging an illicit business activity as this ‘Weekly Bazaar’ was an illegitimate shadow market. AKM and MCCI also reminded citizens that they were not contributing to the economic development of the district and not contributing anything to the state’s revenue by purchasing from those traders. They said ‘Weekly Bazaar’ was not a registered business and there was no levying and computation of taxes on them as they evaded VAT and all codified fiscal rules. On July 9, AKM and MCCI said 11 undocumented traders involved in the shadow business were apprehended by police at Mokokchung DEF area for not possessing ILP. AKM and MCCI claimed

that those 11 “dubious” traders and their vehicles laden with uncertified consignment to be sold at the Weekly Bazaar were reportedly brought to the Mokokchung police station, but some patrons of “good influence” showed up to bail out the ILP defaulters and their unspecified consignment and vehicles. When they arrived at the Police Station, AKM and MCCI said all the vehicles laden with unspecified consignment, probably with contraband items, were nowhere to be seen. AKM had initiated ‘Survival Mokokchung campaign’ to flush out illegal Bangladeshi immigrants and to safeguard local socio-economic future, but ‘weekly bazaar’ was proving to be undoing what it have achieved so far, they said. MCCI said it stood for safeguarding genuine traders and for promoting a free, fair and healthily competitive market, but added it would be compelled to make drastic moves when shadow markets hijack the formal market.

Shillong, Jul 11 (PTI): Pre-historic megaliths and tools discovered in Meghalaya’s RiBhoi district indicate that Khasi tribe, one of the major tribes in the state, had made the state their home since around 1200 BC. Archaeologist Marco Mitri and a team of academicians from the North Eastern Hills University excavated the archaeological site near Lummawbuh village in the northern slopes of Sohpetbneng (heaven’s naval) peak near the NH-40. back to the prehistoric period in the ridge spreading over 1.5 km. The tests confirmed that these were dated to 12th century BC,” Mitri told PTI. NEFIS celebrates SC’s Reinstall Khotkoti police check gate: AJYCP judgement on AFSPA Correspondent

DIMAPUR, Jul 11: NorthEast Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) said its activists today gathered in huge numbers at Vishvidyalaya Metro Station and held a Candle Light Vigil to celebrate the recent judgement of Supreme Court condemning the draconian Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA). In a release, NEFIS convenor, while relating SC’s judgement said that if members of the armed forces are deployed and employed to kill citizens of the country on the mere allegation or suspicion that they are the ‘enemy’, not only the rule of law but also democracy would be in grave danger. NEFIS called the ruling as a “vindication of the democratic movement against AFSPA”. The note also said that Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) has been used by the army to use draconian measures against Indian

people. The law gives soldiers sweeping powers to arrest or interrogate people in “disturbed areas” or states dealing with separatists or insurgents. Declarations of the committee appointed by the Supreme Court in April 2013 that fake encounters happened in Manipur under the cover of immunity granted by this act, had earlier affirmed facts that we have all known for very long, about the nature of this brutal act. NEFIS expressed its believe that by denying the right to rule of law, the Indian state has kept North-East people relegated to the status of second class citizenry in the country that claims itself to be the world’s largest democracy. While NEFIS welcomes this move, the group said it would continue to wage struggle against this brutal act till it was repealed.

Expressing keenness to forge a lasting partnership with Kenya, Modi said there are enough opportunities in the 21st century for cooperation, not only for the common good of the people of the two countries but the world at large. “We trade more than ever before. But we must explore ways of working together in more areas, he said, while identifying manufacturing as one of the sectors in this regard. Talking about “India’s rise, the Prime Minister said it was happening because of its 800 million youth. “I am one of them, quipped Modi who said he was like a 20-year-old at “heart. He said his government is targeting to create 500 million new jobs by 2020, which is “not possible without reposing faith in the youth. Modi, who offered floral tributes at a statue of Mahatma Gandhi which had been installed in the University complex exactly 60 years ago, spoke about the centuries-old ties between India and Kenya and said these need to be taken forward. “Both India and Kenya are flourishing democracies. Both want peace and prosperity of our people, he said, adding the two countries have been bonded by such values. Praising the Indian diaspora in Kenya, he said the Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) are treated as the 43rd tribe in this country which has 42 tribes.

fabric of our society, he said. Underlining the need to counter radicalization, he said “Youth can play an important role in building a counter narrative to extremist ideologies. His comments assume significance in view of the expanding footprint of ISIS terror group, which is particularly attracting the youth through a campaign of radicalisation. A recent case in point was the attack in Bangladesh some days back at a cafe by a group of six educated youth in which 22 people, mostly foreigners, were killed. Some of these six attackers were allegedly influenced by the controversial Indian Muslim preacher Zakir Naik, who gives sermons on a TV channel. Apprehensions of some Indian youth getting attracted

towards ISIS is also gaining ground with 15 youngsters from Kerala going missing mysteriously. The Prime Minister, while speaking about developmental strides, said, “A steady march towards our economic goals is indeed a priority. But, we also cannot ignore the safety of our people. “We must be equally condemning of those who give shelter to terrorists and use them as political instruments, the Prime Minister said, in an apparent reference to Pakistan where anti-India terror groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish -e-Mohammad are based and carry out strikes in India with the support of Pakistani establishment. “Terrorism knows no boundaries, no religion, no race and no values, Modi

asserted. Turning to maritime security, he said there is a need to stand guard against seaborne threats. He also pressed the need for ensuring that piracy does not affect the movements in the maritime area and that freedom of navigation is ensured for all. Pitching for closer security cooperation with Kenya and other African countries connected with India by the Indian Ocean, he said the eastern coast of Africa is facing challenges. “Coastal security is a matter of deeper engagement, he said, while asking Africa to ensure that its safety is not compromised. Talking about cooperation with Kenya, he said India is ready to share its experiences and expertise in diversified

Nairobi, Jul 11 (PTI): Amid the expanding footprint of ISIS across the world, Prime Minister Narendra Modi Monday warned that “preachers of hate and violence are threatening the fabric of the society and asked the youth to build a counter narrative to extremist ideologies. He also emphasised that those giving shelter to terrorists and using them as political instruments must be condemned, an apparent reference to Pakistan. Addressing the students at the University of Nairobi here, Modi pitched for a world free from terror and hate, saying safety and security of people and societies is essential for realising the benefits of the economic progress. “Preachers of hate and violence are threatening the

T h i r u v anan t h ap u r a m , J u l 1 1 (IANS): Saying terrorists have no religion, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday said an entire community should not be blamed for the alleged links of some with the IS. Extremist activities cannot be attributed to any particular religion alone, the Communist Party of India-Marxist leader told the assembly. “Vested interests are creating an anti-Muslim feeling, Vijayan cautioned. “This will not be allowed as a huge majority in our society is against such activities. “It’s a very small segment which does this. To blame one particular community alone is not fair, he said. The Chief Minister spoke after three legislators raised media reports about several Keralites reportedly going missing to join the Islamic State. Vijayan said the government would not be able to tackle the problem on its own. “There has to be an overall awareness against terrorism and extremism and we need to take everyone into confidence. “The state government will do its job and will work in tandem with the Centre to probe these reports, he said. According to Vijayan, 21 people, including children, were missing and this included 17 from Kasargode district, in the northern tip of Kerala, and four from Palakkad district. Opposition

Pinarayi Vijayan leader Ramesh Chennithala said: “Overall Kerala is known to be a peaceful state. Even though we have no confirmation (that people are missing), it is disturbing and the need of the hour is to strengthen internal security and all of us would like to know the truth. Congress legislator P.T. Thomas pointed out a lady from his constituency was missing. She was working in Mumbai and had reportedly attended meetings in Andheri and was reported to be with the IS now, Thomas said. “One way to bring an instant impact against these subversive forces is to see that this topic is introduced in schools in our state, he said. The Kerala Police and central intelligence agencies are said to be probing the issue, taking down statements from families which have alleged that their family members have gone missing.

New Delhi, Jul 11 (PTI): At least 39 cases of dengue have been reported in the national capital this year with 11 of these recorded in the month of July, according to a municipal report released today. Eight fresh cases of the vector-borne disease have been reported between July 2-9. Total 31 cases were reported till July 2 with May recording six cases and June had witnessed 15, it said. Last year, the city saw a staggering 15,867 dengue cases, the worst in 20 years with the disease claiming 60 lives, as per municipal reports. In 1996, a severe outbreak of dengue had occurred in Delhi wherein about 10,252 cases and 423 deaths were reported. In 2010, besides over 6,200 cases, only eight deaths were officially reported. T h e C o m m o n we a l t h Games were held that year and massive construction works in the city was a major reason behind the spread of the disease. This year, dengue cases have been reported rather early and relatively in larger numbers. Last year only six cases were reported in June, while July registered 36. 11 fresh cases have been reported since the last count, and the total number of cases so far in the city is at least 39, a senior civic official said.

New Delhi, Jul 11 (PTI): Amidst concerns that hospitals, including the country’s premiere institute AIIMS in the national capital, are “breeding ground for dengue mosquitoes, Union Health Minister JP Nadda today directed heads of all hospitals to ensure that their premises are “mosquito-free. The Health Minister gave these instructions at a review meeting held on the preparedness to deal with dengue. The meeting was attended by Delhi’s Health Minister Satyendra Jain, mayors of local civic bodies and the heads of central government hospitals in the national capital. Medical Officer of Health, NDMC, PK Sharma said, “The first dengue case this year was of a staff member at AIIMS who lives in the nearby Kidwai Nagar, which is also infested with mosquitoes. Very often, we find, the hostel inside AIIMS is a breeding ground for mosquitoes. “Many times in the past too we have seen that dengue victims are from AIIMS. We have also issued notices to AIIMS in the past, he said. He said AIIMS has formed an internal committee of members from the Public Health Department, which works along with NDMC, to check mosquitoes within the premises of the hospital. The Medical Superintendents of central hospitals have been instructed to use insecticide-treated mosquito

state slid off its tracks this morning. There were few passengers on the train when five of its coaches derailed, reported NDTV. Train services in the

area have been suspended till the tracks are repaired, which is estimated to take 24 hours, according to officials. In the same region on Nandurbar, flash floods have

erupted, killing four people. About 180 cows and buffaloes have died; 170 homes are damaged in the village of Pachorbori, worst-hit in the area. Heavy rains pounded Kolhapur district and other parts of North Maharashtra in the last 24 hours, substantially lifting the water level in dams and other reservoirs in the region. Regular traffic was also disrupted in Kolhapur city due to heavy water-logging in several areas. Nearly 500 kilometres away from Kolhapur, the Nashik district has also been receiving heavy rainfall for the last 48 hours. This has increased water levels in the river Godavari and also the Gangapur dam, the main source of drinking water for Nashik. Heavy rain led to the flooding in Godavari river. Water flowed into the banks of the river at the renowned Ramkund, a famous religious spot. Two cars parked near at the banks were washed away on Sunday. However, the water levels at present have gone down due to lighter rain since Monday morning.

nets at hospitals in order to prevent spread of the virus. The Medical Superintendent of Safdarjung Hospital, however, said at the meeting that when there aren’t sufficient beds provision of mosquito nets can be a difficult task. “We get so many patients that a lot of them are forced to sleep on the floor. A ward of 50 patients has to accommodate 150 patients. It will be difficult to provide all of them with mosquito nets, the Medical Superintendent said. Distribution of tablets by the state government to check breeding of mosquitoes in coolers, et al, was also mooted during the discussion. The Health Minister also said, “In addition to 33 surveillance labs, two apex labs with advanced diagnostic facilities are adequately equipped to undertake dengue tests. He further said that all state governments have been advised to ensure price capping on dengue testing. Asking all departments concerned to be on alert for the next one-and-a-half months, Nadda appealed to local bodies to reach out to school students for creating awareness around dengue. “MCD should prepare a programme chart on the activities carried out by them. They must inspect different places, schools and ensure participation of students. When students participate both schools and homes will be secured (from dengue), Nadda said.

Naik says ready to cooperate with probe agencies Mumbai, Jul 11 (PTI): Controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik, who was expected to return from Saudi Arabia today, said he would be abroad for another 2-3 weeks and was ready to cooperate with any Indian agency investigating allegations against him. Naik, facing allegations of inspiring terrorism through his provocative speeches, also cancelled his scheduled press conference via Skype tomorrow and suggested that he has become a victim of media trial. In a statement released from abroad this evening, he said no Indian government agency has so far contacted him over the allegations against him. “So far, not a single official Indian government agency has contacted me for any clarification regarding this issue. It would be my pleasure to cooperate with any official Indian government investigation agency for any information they might require from me, he said.

Peace TV impact? Govt cracks whip on unauthorised channels

Union I&B Minister Venkaiah Naidu making a surprise check of attendance and cleanliness at Shastri Bhawan in New Delhi on Monday. (PTI) New Delhi, Jul 11 (Agencies/PTI): In a development seen as a fallout of the Zakir Naik episode, Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Minister Venkaiah Naidu on Monday warned of strict action against unauthorised channels on television networks. The gover nment has banned Peace TV after its promoter Zakir Naik was accused of inciting the terrorists involved in the deadly Dhaka attack. He’s also been the subject of a probe to find out if he promoted hard line views on Islam and incited religious fundamentalists to commit crimes. The I&B Ministry has written letters to all the state chief ministers asking them to take strict action against unauthorised TV broadcast, Naidu said. He also appealed to the public to inform the ministry if they see any unauthorised channels on cable networks, the minister added.

Hardik Patel gets bail, set to be freed A h m e da bad, J u l 1 1 (IANS): The Gujarat High Court on Monday granted bail to Patidar reservation spearhead Hardik Patel in the last case against him, preparing the ground for his release after nearly 10 months in jail. Hardik Patel has got bail in two sedition cases and one on the attack on the office of Visnagar BJP MLA Hrishikesh Patel and other government properties during the reservation agitation. He had challenged in the high court the Visnagar court’s refusal to give bail to him. The appeal was heard on Monday. The 23-year-old Patel leader has been bailed out on the condition that he stays away from Gujarat for six months. Sources in the Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) claim that Patel was likely to spend the next six months in election-bound Uttar Pradesh. The Kurmis in the country’s most populous state are equivalent to Patels in Gujarat and are considered electorally significant. The release of Hardik Patel was welcomed with firecrackers and shouting of slogans by his supporters and family members outside the high court, his hometown Viramgam in Ahmedabad district and at Visnagar town in north Gujarat and in Surat city. Venkaiah Naidu pays surprise visit to broadcasting ministry, pulls up latercomers Top Information and Broadcasting ministry officials were in for a surprise today as Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu, who took charge last week, made an unannounced punctuality and cleanliness check early this morning. Explanations have been sought from officials who were found missing as to why they were not in their workplace on time after Mr Naidu along with Minister of State Rajyavardhan Rathore made the surprise check at 9.30 am. “The Minister personally checked the rooms of several officers and their supporting staff. He also looked into the cleanliness of washrooms in the offices. He also inspected the condition of electrical fittings in the various rooms and corridors in the building, a senior Information and Broadcasting ministry official told PTI.

Venkaiah Naidu, who is also the Urban Development minister, later tweeted about his visit. “Made a surprise check of attendance and cleanliness at Shastri Bhawan today at sharp 9:30 am....Directed concerned Joint Secretaries to review issues related to punctuality and cleanliness in the offices on daily basis, he said on twitter. The minister also added that “explanation sought from those who were not present at the time of inspection. Officials said that Mr Naidu also emphasised that open cables should be avoided as it did not reflect a presentable and efficient working environment besides being a fire hazard. A fire had destroyed several files in a Information and Broadcasting ministry office in Shastri Bhawan in 2014.

Reflection for change

F

olk Singer Bob Dylan’s 1964 hit “The Times They Are A Changin’, was sung at a time when the world was undergoing a churning; a time when the west was turning on its head. Despite much progress, there were many who asked questions that were not answered. There were the flower people, the peaceniks and beatniks who sought to give the answer but only managed to add to the churn. Dylan’s song continue to rekindle the same call for a change that is all encompassing. Indeed, changes are continually taking placesignificantly in some and insignificantly in others. Those that seek changes beyond the physical appearance make the difference. Dylan’s song gripped the music world and the western societies 52 years ago, when a majority of today’s generation in Nagaland were not born. Today, society in Nagaland is gripped by a syndrome that is called as asociality which, loosely translated means, anything is acceptable since the boundary lines have long been erased. Materialism has overtaken society which is manifest with construction of buildings and other infrastructures. These may be welcome signs but it would be foolish to mistake the wood for the trees. Tons of money coming from Delhi have to show up somewhere-be it through government projects or in the pocket borough of those who have received the diverted flow. The ground reality is, that the majority do not have any economy worth mentioning. Much of the money in circulation comes through release of government payments. For the low income groups, prices of essential items have shot up, making it difficult to make both ends meet. The worse are those without any known or stable source of income. The lamentations over the ‘gap’ – between the haves and haves not is only a nice sounding phrase and nothing more. When the fifties generation (those born during the post-independence period) were young, they used to pride themselves that there was not a single beggar in Nagaland. Today, begging is in the form of demand and threat. Nobody wants to work and this is an issue which all need to debate and bring up realistic plans with a long term vision and not merely for political gain. Much has also changed in Nagaland during the few decades since the turbulent fifties. There are many unaddressed issues that have resulted in inequitable distribution of purchasing power to a few among the politicians and bureaucrats, through ill gotten money. Social problems continue to mount as society is confronted by extortions, lawlessness, rise in crimes and HIV etc. Unemployment and anti-social crimes are ascending while morality is descending. The minority well to-do cannot represent society where there are too many without means or hopes. Even leaders of the church organizations by a lack of discernible action against poverty, seem by their silence, to suggest that poverty is piety. Whatever is happening-at the government, political and society level, can be spelt in one word- ‘corruption’. Indeed, corruption has plunged society to the lowest and from where there is no more sense of shame or guilt. No matter what campaign is being launched, there is too much to be done and slogans, banners or meetings are not going to make any impact. Politicians are blamed for all ills but can the people absolve themselves of their roles and responsibilities? And unfortunately, today society has developed a strain that is resistant to curative prescriptions.

DailyDevotion The Spiritually Vigorous Saint …that I may know Him… —Philippians 3:10 A saint is not to take the initiative toward self-realization, but toward knowing Jesus Christ. A spiritually vigorous saint never believes that his circumstances simply happen at random, nor does he ever think of his life as being divided into the secular and the sacred. He sees every situation in which he finds himself as the means of obtaining a greater knowledge of Jesus Christ, and he has an attitude of unrestrained abandon and total surrender about him. The Holy Spirit is determined that we will have the realization of Jesus Christ in every area of our lives, and He will bring us back to the same point over and over again until we do. Self-realization only leads to the glorification of good works, whereas a saint of God glorifies Jesus Christ through his good works. Whatever we may be doing— even eating, drinking, or washing disciples’ feet— we have to take the initiative of realizing and recognizing Jesus Christ in it. Every phase of our life has its counterpart in the life of Jesus. Our Lord realized His relationship to the Father even in the most menial task. “Jesus, knowing… that He had come from God and was going to God,…took a towel…and began to wash the disciples’ feet…” (John 13:3-5). The aim of a spiritually vigorous saint is “that I may know Him…” Do I know Him where I am today? If not, I am failing Him. I am not here for self-realization, but to know Jesus Christ. In Christian work our initiative and motivation are too often simply the result of realizing that there is work to be done and that we must do it. Yet that is never the attitude of a spiritually vigorous saint. His aim is to achieve the realization of Jesus Christ in every set of circumstances.

If you feel beautiful, then you are. Even if you don’t, you still are. ~ Terri Guillemets

W

hen you buy fish or eat it in restaurants, you should be told whether it is caught from wild waters or farm raised. We are told that fish have beneficial Omega 3 fatty acids that improve the health of the heart and promote mental health. But is your fish healthier than mutton or chicken? Not if you are buying farm raised fish. Industrial fish farming, or aquaculture, is the fastest growing form of food production in the world. 50% of the world’s seafood now comes from fish farms. By 2011, global farmed fish production topped beef production, and the gap increased in 2012 when 66 million tons of farmed fish were produced, compared to 63 million tons of beef. The farmed seafood industry continues to ramp up to the tune of $60 billion in revenue a year. Has taking factory farming to the water had any ill effects – to your health and to the planet? At first glance, farmed fish may seem like a good idea to help protect wild seafood populations from overfishing. The government’s agriculture ministry is going all out to promote fish farming. Not one bureaucrat has pointed out the dangers of this – probably because our bureaucrats don’t know much and their egos prevent them from learning. In reality, however, the industry is plagued with the problems of pollution, disease and inferior nutritional quality.

Farm raised fish grow up eating corn, soy feed, animal and human faeces. This is nothing like their natural diet. As a result they have 50% less Omega 3, protein, calcium and iron. These fish have a high risk of disease and parasitic infestation and are loaded with antibiotics. Does eating them protect our wild fish? On the contrary, many farmed fish are being fed a small fish diet. These tiny prey fish, like anchovies and herring, are not being farmed anywhere. They are caught in the millions by trawler nets, pulped and fed to farmed fish. As a result, both species are in danger of extinction. Since they are almost gone, so are species that depend on them. Scientists blame aquaculture for the decline in whales, dolphins, seals, sea lions, penguins, albatross and many other species. They state “Rather than relieving pressure on wild fish, growing these large carnivores [salmon and tuna on fish farms] requires a steady supply of prey that are caught and ground into oil and meal. As the industry grows, it is straining the existing supply of prey fish, putting additional pressure on populations that cannot supply the demand.” The Jevons Paradox says that “as production methods grow more efficient, demand for resources actually increases – rather than decreasing, as you might expect,” This is precisely what has happened with aquaculture. As fish farming became more efficient, demand for wild fish has increased significantly.

Nagaland Post, Dimapur tuesday, July 12, 2016

Educate the government This has, in turn, put increased demand on the oceans. Fish are farmed by stuffing them so thickly in artificial ponds that they cannot swim and are cheek by jowl with each other – like chickens in battery cages. The close quarters where farmed fish are raised, combined with their unnatural diets, means disease spreads quickly. Because most farmed fish are often raised in pens in the ocean, pathogens spread and contaminate wild fish swimming past. Sea lice, a type of crustacean found parasitizing captive fish, have become a significant problem and have been blamed for the declining numbers of wild fish, as well as the species that eat them – animals and birds. Other types of lethal viruses which spread from fish farms are also now being detected in wild populations, including leukaemia viruses and influenza. Concentrated antibiotics, pesticides and other chemicals are commonly used to fight farm fish diseases and parasites. These wash into the water and are found miles away. Farmed fish often es-

cape into the wild seas. The escaped fish breed with wild fish, and research shows that these hybrid-born fish are less viable and die earlier, contaminating the entire gene pool and harming the future of the wild population. For instance, new research from the University of Melbourne has shown that half of the world’s most popular fish - farmed salmon – have a hearing loss because of a deformity of theearbone. Fish have ears and they use them for hearing and balance, just like we do. This deformity has broader implications. Each year, billions of captive-bred juvenile salmon are released into rivers in North America, Asia and Europe to increase wild populations. Their survival is 20 times lower than that of wild salmon. Loss of hearing plays a major role. And when they breed with wild populations, this could decimate them as well. Scientists have raised serious concerns about high levels of contaminants, like lead and cadmium in farm-raised fish, which enter your body where they bind to your cells. In 2006

Russia banned Norwegian farmed salmon (top producer in the world) for this reason. Instead of reducing the toxic ingredients, Norway has lobbied the EU to raise the permissible level of toxins in salmon feed, which has now been granted!! The new, official recommendation to Norwegian women of childbearing age, or who are pregnant, is to limit their consumption! The most common farmraised fish are: salmon, tilapia, catfish, “sea” bass and cod. (Don’t be fooled by menu descriptions. “North Atlantic Salmon” and “Chilean Sea Bass” are farmed breeds and not the oceans where they are caught.) Because farm-raised fish are kept in cages, they have the tendency to be fatter with a higher concentration of omega-6 acids. The problem with getting too many omega-6 acids is that they cause inflammation. Studies show that farm raised Tilapia worsens inflammation in the human body and can lead to heart disease, arthritis, asthma and other serious health problems. Scientists have found that the inflammatory potential of tilapia is far greater than that of pork/bacon. According to USDA data, farm raised salmon has 52% more fat than those caught wild. Toxins are stored in fat and the fat in farm raised salmon is found to be contaminated with over 100 pollutants and pesticides. According to the Environmental Working Group in 2004 Polychlorinated biphenyls

(PCBs), a set of carcinogenic manmade chemicals, are 11 times higher in farm-bred salmon compared to wild salmon. “The first-ever tests of farmed salmon from U.S. grocery stores show that farmed salmon are probably the most PCB contaminated protein source in the food supply.” In three independent studies, scientists tested 37 fish meal samples from six countries and found PCB contamination in nearly every sample (Jacobs 2002, Easton 2002, and CFIA 1999). PCBs were banned in the U.S. in the late 1970s and are among the “dirty dozen” chemical contaminants slated for global phase-out under the UN treaty on persistent organic pollutants. PCBs have been linked to cancer and impaired foetal brain development. Once these toxic chemicals enter your system, it takes 7 to 11 years to flush out. Other species of farmed fish have been found contaminated with methylmercury. The source of the fish you eat may not be something you’ve ever thought about. But you should. For instance, farm-raised salmon meat is grey and has to be dyed to look like normal salmon does. SalmoFan is a colour chart fish farmers use to pick various shades of salmon-coloured fish dyes. Anyone concerned about their own health, and the world around them, should try to find out where their fish came from and avoid farmed fish completely. And perhaps educate the government on their new fish farm policy.

This will benefit her, her family and her community” Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin, UNFPA, message on World Population Day 2016. The stage of adolescence is a very delicate transitional period of development between Childhood and Adulthood, representing the period during which a person is biologically an adult but emotionally yet to mature. It is during this period an individual undergoes enormous physical and psychological changes. In addition, the adolescent also experience changes in social expectations and perceptions. Physical growth and development are accomplished by sexual maturation, often leading to intimate relationships. Promoting healthy practices during adolescence, and taking steps to better protect young people from health risks are critical for the prevention of health problems in adulthood, and for the societies future health and welfare. As per WHO report as on May’2016, around 1 in every 6 person in the world is an adolescent i.e, 1.2 billion people are aged between 10-19 years. An estimated 1.3 adolescents million died in 2015, mostly from preventable or treatable causes such as HIV, mental health, violence, alcohol and drugs, unintentional injuries, malnutrition and obesity, anaemia, tobacco use, diarrhoea, lower respiratory tract infections and meningitis are some major cause of death among adolescents. Complications linking to pregnancy and childbirth are the second cause of death among adolescent girls between 15-19 year. Of all the adolescent health issues, Why is the world focusing only on Teenage/Adolescent Girls this year? Why do we need to invest in Teenage Girls? Did you know that investing in adolescent girls helps break the Poverty Cycle? Globally, there are 49 Births per 1000 girls aged 15 to 19 per year. India has almost 105 million adolescent girls. There are more adolescents in India today than before. According to the world’s latest development report card i.e, the Millennium Development Report 2013, the world is still short of meeting targets in Reducing Child and Maternal Mortality. Therefore, reducing adolescent pregnancy and child marriage are very important and crucial not just for health issue but for social and mental development of a society. Many teenage girls are con-

A

sidered by their communities or parents to be ready for marriage and motherhood and are married off early to handle parental responsibility. Complications from pregnancy and child birth continue to be the leading cause of death among adolescent girls between 15-19 years. Lack of access even to the basic information regarding their Health, Reproductive/Sexual Rights and Human Rights leaves them more vulnerable to various illness, injury and exploitation. As such adolescent girls are more prone to sexual exploitation resulting in mental instability, practice of unsafe abortion and sexually transmitted infections. Gender inequality, forced marriage, lack of proper education, neglected hygienic needs of girls, sexual violence and coercion are the main challenges faced among marginalized girls, such as those living in poverty or remote areas. Pregnancy before a girl is physically, developmentally and socially ready jeopardizes her right to a safe, successful transition into adulthood. When a girl becomes pregnant, her life changes radically. Her education may end and her job prospects diminish. She becomes more vulnerable to poverty and exclusion, and her health often suffers. Adolescent pregnancy is often not the result of a deliberate choice, but rather the absence of choices. With the growth in our population and adolescent girls entering to their reproductive years, it is very important to call attention towards the primary part of the reproductive health. Preventing teen pregnancy should be made top issue for our policy makers and stake holders in our society. We need to make an effort to identify and reach the most vulnerable girls through programmes that will suit them according to their unique and specific circumstances. Married girls need specially targeted strategies that provide access to education, life skills, health including Sexual Reproductive Health and HIV prevention, and other participation opportunities. Maternal health programmes need to be reoriented with dedicated outreach for the youngest, first-time mothers to use antenatal, essential and emergency obstetric care, and post-delivery services. The reproductive rights of young people should be a top priority and adolescent-friendly health services, including contraceptives and comprehensive sexuality information should be made easily; readily available to enable them to make informed decisions about their own lives. Basing on the theme “Investing in Teenage Girls” by the United

Nations Population Fund for the Year 2016. Since many of this challenges are faced by a girl during their adolescent stage. The well-being of adolescent girls is the key to eliminating poverty, achieving social justice, stabilizing the population, and preventing foreseeable humanitarian crises. Reducing adolescent pregnancy is about empowering girls. Educated and healthy girls stay in school longer, marry later, delay childbearing, have healthier children, develop life skills, and earn higher incomes. They can help lift themselves and their present and future families out of poverty. When girls have a choice, they marry later. When we invest in teenage girls, a girl will become an active citizen in her community. She will become a mother when she is ready and invest in her future children’s health and education. She will be able to contribute fully to her society and break the cycle of poverty. When investments in girls are made, everyone benefits: their families, communities, and most importantly, the girls themselves. Investing in girls, developing their social and economic assets means healthier families and higher levels of gender equality. Investment in adolescent girls is an investment in development for everyone. When teenage girls are empowered, when they know about their rights and are given the tools to succeed, they become agents of positive change in their communities. This in turn makes for stronger societies and more vibrant economies. Let’s all aim to end child marriage, curb adolescent pregnancy, and to empower girls to make informed choices about their health and lives. It may be noted here that, in 1989, the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme recommended that 11th July be observed by the International community as World Population Day, a day to focus attention on the urgency and importance of Population Issues . What makes the campaign unique is that it focuses on the whole woman—not just her health needs, or her educational needs, or her rights. It will probably never be easy to be a teenage girl, no matter where in the world she lives. But as a global community, we can help make it easier by realizing that the face of the future is the face of a teenage girl and when we invest in every aspect of her, we are building a better future for all of us. Let’s let girls be girls. Ville Rhetso, Counselor, Family Planning Association of India, Nagaland Branch- Kohima

A violator’s duties and rights

s human beings we all make mistakes intentionally or unintentionally and as a busy commuter sometimes we violate rules in the process. As law is meant equal for all, every violator has the duty to pay fine if they do so breach the law or violate traffic rules. But many a time even if the violator does his duty by paying the fine their rights to receive challen or receipt is neglected or avoided by the man in uniform authorised to collect fine. If law is meant equal for all than even the violators have some right of concern. For instance, a violator riding without helmet has the right to pay ‘only’ 100 rupees and receive challen or receipt for the first offense and for second or following offence the amount of fine may extend to 300 rupees ‘only’ (Note: Given

under Section 177 of the “Motor Vehicle Act”). If the traffic rules that imposes fine and duty on the violator are taken out from the “Motor Vehicle Act” or this Act is applicable to Dimapur Traffic Regulation then the violator too has the right not to pay 500 rupees fine and also the right to receive challen on the payment of 100 rupees fine which is the actual amount of fine for the first offense under the said Motor Vehicle Act. Thus, if the violator violates the rules than they have the duty to pay fine and so also the right to receive challen on the payment of such fine for not wearing helmet which may be 100 & 300 rupees not an alien fine of 500. hat do people with disabilities want?: They want the same things that everyone else in the community wants. They want the opportunity to get a good education, get a job, lead worthwhile lives and be valued members of the society. They want to be able to go to church and worship, to go shopping, go out with family and friends, and enjoy a concert or festival celebration. They want a chance to participate meaningfully in the life of the community. They want their human rights recognised and realised. They want change and are hopeful that others will share their vision of an inclusive Nagaland that leaves no one behind, a Nagaland that enables people with disabilities to fulfil their potential as equal citizens, a Nagaland for all. People with disabilities are citizens with rights: The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD), ratified by India in 2007, recognises that persons with disabilities are right-holders instead of passive recipients of government schemes. It affirms the dignity and human rights of all people with disabilities and rejects the link between ability and impairment. It does not create any new rights but clearly states that ‘persons with disabilities have equal access and a right to full and effective enjoyment of all human rights’. The principles of the UNCRPD are: inherent dignity, non-discrimination, effective inclusion, respect for differences, equal opportunity, accessibility, gender equality and respect for the evolving capacities of children with disabilities. People with disabilities are not ‘objects’ of charity but ‘subjects’ with rights, capable of claiming those rights, able to make decisions for their own lives based on their free and informed consent and be active members of society. Overview of Nagaland: People with disabilities represent the most excluded of all groups in Naga society. They are completely missing from the development landscape. Majority of children with disabilities cannot attend school. Most adults with disabilities are unable to participate in community activities such as meetings, community programmes and functions, festivals and religious services. They have no access to the labour market and encounter serious obstacles and discrimination in seeking employment or income-generating activities. Girls and women with disabilities, particularly those with psychosocial disabilities, are extremely vulnerable

to physical and sexual abuse. To sum up, People with Disabilities in Nagaland: • Lack access to quality health services • Lack access to disability support services • Lack access to educational services • Lack opportunity to livelihood and economic empowerment • Excluded from participation in society due to environmental barriers • Excluded from participation in society due to attitudinal barriers What is disability-inclusive development : Disability-inclusive development means that people with disabilities are systematically and consistently included in and benefit from development. • Equal rights: The entire community, including persons with disabilities benefit equally from mainstream development processes. Disability-inclusive development sets out to achieve equal rights for people with disabilities as well as full/active participation in, and access to, all aspects of society. • Participation: Persons with disabilities participate in all benefits of mainstream programmes and thus also participate in decision-making. • Accessibility: Environmental, institutional and attitudinal barriers are identified and addressed to ensure that people with disabilities are fully included in all spheres of life that they participate in society and are optimally able to achieve their ambitions. • Sustainability: Inclusive development is not a one-off activity; including persons with disabilities needs to be embedded in all the veins of the organisational culture. This will become visible in the organisations’ policies, systems and practices. (Count Me In: Light for the World, Netherlands) Twin-track approach: A ‘twintrack’ approach must be adopted by the government. This means that the aim must be to mainstream disability in all government policies and programmes while also supporting disability-targeted programmes. Full and active support must be given to programmes that target people with disabilities directly, but it needs to go further to ensure that all mainstream government programmes are disabilityinclusive (To be concluded) Diethono Nakhro (Member, National Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (NCRPD) and Advisor, Nagaland State Disability Forum (NSDF)

Sir,

‘Current’ woes in hot hot Dimapur

Come summer, power outages in Dimapur become more frequent then desired. Blackouts sometimes stretch for several hours. Probably the hottest district in the state, it is common knowledge that Dimapur heat can be unbearable for many. Power cut during wee hours result in dramatic awakening of entire colonies. Expletives can be heard every time the power goes. People of similar economic background who can’t afford alternative power source can be seen socialising in the middle of the night at dark corners, from balconies! It is a sad joke that electricity chooses to elude Dimapurians when the mercury is at its peak, and there is little respite from the heat and humidity despite short attires being in vogue. Blackout is not the only woe in Dimapur. Electronic equipments, mostly light bulbs, have become victims to frequent Brownout/voltage fluctuation. Moreover, Dimapur being a commercial city, frequent power outage has negative impact on the economy as well. Offices, industries, and business cannot function sans electricity. Therefore, through your esteemed daily I would like to appeal to the Electricity Department to look into the matter and provide regular power supply to the roasted souls in Dimapur. Nzanbemo Kithan, Sewak Colony, Dimapur

to CBI to probe

New Delhi, Jul 11 (PTI): CBI was today given the last chance to complete its further probe in two months in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case in which Congress leader Jagdish Tytler was earlier given a clean chit for his alleged role, with the court saying justice delayed amounted to justice denied. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Shivali Sharma pulled up the CBI for not taking proper steps to complete the probe, as directed by the court earlier, and made it clear that if no fruitful results are shown in these two months, the agency’s Superintendent of Police would have to explain. The court’s direction came when the CBI prosecutor filed a status report of ongoing probe and sought two more months to file the final report. “I have perused CBI’s status report and the case file. From perusal of the report and case file, it appears proper steps are not being taken to complete the probe as directed by the court earlier.

ployment is demand-driven and people turning up for work are to be hired and paid on notified wage rates. Rural distress due to drought has a big role in the increased NREGA numbers, officials said. On June 17, the Centre has notified the provision of additional employment over and above 100 days per household (up to 150 days) in notified drought affected districts of Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. On July 4, this notification of 150 days was also extended to the droughtaffected districts duly notified by the states of Uttarakhand and MP. Some states like Bihar and Jammu & Kashmir are severely lagging, with Bihar reporting only 1.99 crore person-days of employment generated in the same period against a target of 4.03 crore .

said he was joining the AAP to target Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the “rampant corruption promoted by his government”. Oza had contested against Modi in the Maninagar assembly constituency in 2002 but lost. According to the letter, it was decided that the AIMIM would field candidates in Bihar’s Muslim dominated areas. “It was also decided that Owaisi will vomit poisonous communal speech, the script of which shall be written by Shah, which may have potentiality to result into communal divide.” His letter alleged that major cases of corruption were investigated by the CAG when Modi ran the government in Gujarat and even now. “There are at least eight findings of CAG which directly indict the present government about siphoning off funds from the state exchequer for personal gains.

(From P-1) “Any problem that may arise between the two villages shall not give a tribal colour but settle among themselves locally and amicably,” the resolution stated. NREGA in the first quarter compared to a projected target of 89.26 crore . The biggest increase this year has been seen in Congress-ruled Karnataka, which saw a whopping 265 per cent jump from its quarterly target of 2.48 crore person-days of employment generated against a projected target of just 93 lakh. UP has exceeded its quarterly target by 180 per cent- reporting 6.56 crore person-days against projection of 3.64 crore persondays. Rajasthan generated 11.45 crore person-days, the maximum for any state and a 125 per cent over its its target while Tamil Nadu reported 10.2 crore person-days, nearly 140 per cent of its projected target. Assam and Chhattisgarh have also reported 140 per cent and 160 per cent of their projected targets. Under the NREGA, em-

Ahmedabad, Jul 11 (IANS): Former Gujarat BJP MLA Yatin Oza, who was once close to BJP President Amit Shah, has alleged that Shah had a secret pact with AIMIM leader Akbaruddin Owaisi ahead of the Bihar polls last year. Oza, who has been lying low, made the allegation in a letter to Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal. Oza, who told reporters here after Kejriwal’s two-day Gujarat visit that he was joining the AAP, said in his July 4 letter that Shah had a secret meeting at his residence on September 15 last year with Akbaruddin Owaisi, son of AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi. Shah and Owaisi junior worked out a mutually convenient strategy to divide the votes in Bihar on communal lines, Oza alleged. Oza, a practicing lawyer in the Gujarat High Court,

In the first quarter this year 79.10 crore person-days of employment was generated, the highest for any quarter since the first quarter of year 2012, reported TOI. The figure was almost 15 per cent higher than the projected number of 70.5 crore person-days for the first quarter. According to Crisil, India’s ranking on ease of doing business and competitiveness is expected to rise in 2016, given the government’s reforms initiatives. accommodative monetary stance and cut the repo rate by another 25 bps this fiscal. Noting that the economy’s modest recovery has been shaped by “good luck” on crude oil and commodities, Crisil said the mediumterm outlook will be shaped by progress on initiatives such as cleaning up of bank balancesheets and successful implementation of the goods and services tax (GST). Besides, financial inclusion through initiatives like Jan Dhan and digitisation, among others, will also potentially have a transformative impact on the economy’s growth, it added. On the employment front, Crisil Chief Economist Dharmakirti Joshi noted that the government needs to bring in about 6,000 jobs a month, but it is falling short of the target.

Mumbai, Jul 11 (PTI): Indian economy is likely to grow at 7.9 per cent in the current fiscal provided the country receives normal monsoon as it will boost agriculture growth and lift rural demand, says a report. As per the rating agency Crisil’s latest report, GDP is expected to grow by 7.9 per cent in 2016-17 as against 7.6 per cent in the previous fiscal if “monsoon is normal and global situation does not deteriorate from here”. “If the rains are normal, it would give agriculture a one-time growth kick, particularly given the low-base effect of the two previous years... that should lift sagging rural demand and by extension, overall GDP growth,” it said. Accordingly, the rating agency expects the Reserve Bank of India to continue its

Mumbai, Jul 11 (PTI): Strengthening its gains for the third session, the rupee today surged by another 24 paise to close at a more than 3-week high of 67.13 on persistent selling of US dollars by bank and exporters amid massive rally in domestic equities. Markets put up a strong rally on an across-the-board buying frenzy, lifting the Sensex about 500 points to close at 11-month high of 27,627 and the Nifty above 8,400 amid robust global cues. However, firm dollar in the overseas market restricted the rupee’s gain, a forex dealer said. The rupee opened higher at 67.12 per dollar against last Friday’s closing level of 67.37 at the Interbank Foreign Exchange (Forex) market and hovered in a range of 67.06 and 67.22 before ending at more than 3-week high of 67.13, showing a gain of 24 paise or 0.36 per cent.

Abe calls for debate on Japan constitution

US diplomat visits Dhaka terror site Dhaka, Jul 11 (PTI): Senior US diplomat Nisha Desai Biswal today met top Bangladeshi officials as well as Dhakabased diplomats including the Indian High Commissioner and discussed the security situation in the country following two high- profile terror attacks in the Muslim-majority nation. Biswal, the US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs, also visited the Holey Artisan Bakery in Dhaka’s diplomatic enclave where terrorists killed 22 people including nine Italians, seven Japanese, one Indian and an American citizen of Bangladesh origin on July 1. The US point person for South Asia, stayed there for around 20 minutes amid police barricade surrounding the area. The radical Islamic State (IS) has reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack on the popular eatery, which is frequented by foreigners.

Shinzo Abe ment’s lower house as well, and suggesting compromise was needed. “So I hope debate will steadily deepen.” Japan’s constitution, imposed by occupying United States forces after World War II, prohibits the use of aggression to solve international conflicts. The provisions are popular in the public at large, but reviled by rightwingers like Abe, who see them as outdated and punitive.

The LDP’s own draft amendment plan calls for keeping the war-renouncing spirit of the constitution, but wants to remove language it sees as infringing on the country’s means to defend itself. Unofficial results from Sunday’s vote compiled by media show the LDP and its Buddhist-backed allies, Komeito, now occupy more than half - at least 147 - of the seats in the upper chamber of parliament. Full official results are expected tomorrow. With backing from fringe parties that also favour consitutional change, Abe could now have the two-thirds majority that he needs in both houses to push through amy proposal to amend the country’s basic law. However, observers point out that corralling support for a revision from its coalition partner Komeito which has traditionally shied away from nationalist posturing could be difficult.

Turnbull set to form his govt after Governor General’s nod Melbourne, Jul 11 (PTI): Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is set to form a coalition government after Governor General Peter Cosgrove accepted his advice to return to power for a second time. Turnbull, 61, wrote to Cosgrove saying Opposition leader Bill Shorten had conceded defeat and the coalition had at least 74 seats in addition to the support from two independents. “In these circumstances I advise you that I am in a position to form a ministry that has the confidence of the House of Representatives,” Turnbull wrote. Noting Tunbull’s advice, Cosgrove wrote back accepting the advice. “I accept your advice that you are in a position to form a ministry that has the confidence of the House of Representatives,” Cosgrove said. “And I await your further advice on proposed changes to the ministry and related administrative arrangements,”

he said. Cosgrove is currently overseas. The Prime Minister met with secretary of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet Martin Parkinson in Canberra. As counting continues, three contests remain close - Hindmarsh, Capricornia and Herbert - but the coalition is confident of having 76 seats in the 150-seat lower house. The Nationals’ 22 MPs, led by Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce, will meet tomorrow to discuss any changes to the agreement, which is essential to forming government. Joyce will then meet with the Prime Minister on Wednesday. There is pressure on the Liberal leader to give the Nationals an extra frontbench role, after the party gained an extra seat in the election, and conservative Liberals are seeking a stronger position in the ministry line-up.

Indian firms most transparent: survey Berlin, Jul 11 (PTI): Indian companies are the most transparent while Chinese firms the most opaque, a global anti-graft watchdog today said in a new report that assessed efforts of emerging companies to fight corruption. Berlin-based Transparency International in its report said: “Indian companies have the highest average score of any country. They all score 75 per cent or more in organisational transparency largely due to the Companies Act.” Indian firms dominated the top spots in organisational transparency with Telecom company Bharti Airtel taking the first place with a score of 7.3 out of 10, followed by six units of conglomerate Tata and technology company Wipro, the report said. The report covered 100 companies in 15 emerging market countries that also included Brazil, Mexico and Russia. “In India, the Companies Act requires firms to disclose key financial infor-

Colombo, Jul 11 (PTI): Former Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa’s eldest son was today arrested over alleged financial irregularities in connection with a USD 650 million real-estate project in Colombo involving an Indian firm. Namal Rajapaksa, 30, was arrested after he recorded his statement with Financial Crimes Division (FCID) in connection with the deal with India’s Krrish Group, police said. The Krrish Group had in 2013 signed an agreement to start a USD 650 million real-estate venture in Colombo’s central business district of Fort. There have been allegations of kickbacks paid to members of the former Rajapaksa regime for granting a prime property in downtown Colombo. The FCID investigation was over an alleged commission of 450 million rupees paid to individuals in connection with the deal. Namal, the United Peoples’ Freedom Alliance (UPFA)

Islamabad, Jul 11 (PTI): Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has deplored “excessive” force against civilians in the latest wave of violence in the Valley while expressing “deep shock” over the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani. Sharif, who recently returned from London after an open-heart surgery, came out with a late night statement condemning the action of Indian security forces in Kashmir. “The Prime Minister of

Pakistan has expressed his deep shock at the killing of Kashmiri leader Burhan Wani and many other civilians by the Indian military and paramilitary forces,” Sharif ’s office said in the statement. The Prime Minister said it was “deplorable that excessive and unlawful force was used against the civilians” who were protesting against the killing of Wani. “Oppressive measures such as these cannot deter the valiant people of Jammu and Kashmir from their demand

Namal Rajapaksa Hambantota district MP, was arrested on charges of using money given by the Krrish Group to sponsor a rugby match, for personal use, reports said. The project was halted after the Urban Development Authority imposed a fine on Krrish Group for failure to meet contractual obligations. The group has denied the charge and said they have paid all

dues to the government. The FCID, which was set up after Rajapaksa lost presidency in 2015, has been investigating the deal and Namal’s arrest was the culmination of its investigation. Namal’s younger brother, Yoshitha, was previously arrested by FCID and was released on bail after being in remand over another business deal involving a sports television channel. Several members of the Rakapaksa family other than Namal are facing police investigations for alleged financial crimes. They include Rajapaksa, who was president for a decade until 2015, his brothers Basil and Gotabaya, and his wife Shiranthi. The Rajapaksas claim that the investigations are a political witch-hunt against them and their sympathizers believe these allegations were brought to tarnish his name after he led the Lankan forces to victory over the Tamil Tiger rebels in 2009, ending a nearly three-decade war.

of exercising their right to selfdetermination in accordance with the UN Security Council resolutions,” he said. Expressing concern over the detention of Kashmiri separatist leaders, Sharif said India should fulfil its human rights obligations as well as its commitments under the United Nations Security Council resolutions. The death toll in the clashes between protesters and security forces in Kashmir mounted to 23, as normal life remained paralysed for the third day today in the Valley due to curfew-like restrictions and separatists-sponsored strike in the wake of the killing of Wani in an encounter on Friday. Most of the separatist leaders, including Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq and Mohammad Yasin Malik, are either in custody or under house arrest. Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has alleged that “Sharif-Modi friendship” was causing “irreparable damage” to the Kashmir issue.

Nine companies (eight from China and one from Mexico) were awarded the lowest possible score of 0 per cent. Fifty-four out of the 100 companies score above average (50 per cent or more). Chinese companies, which account for a third of those assessed, had the weakest overall performance, scoring an average of 1.6 out of 10 with just one, telecom gear maker ZTE, making it to the top 25. “The very weak Chinese results stem from weak or non-existent anti-corruption policies and procedures, or a clear failure to disclose them in line with international best practice,” it added. Transparency International said the report’s findings highlighted an urgent need for big multinational companies to do more to fight corruption.

Tokyo, Jul 11 (AFP): An emboldened Shinzo Abe called today for debate on Japan’s pacifist constitution, which he said it was his “duty” to revise after scoring a strong win in weekend elections. Voters backed the hawkish prime minister, despite a lacklustre economic performance, handing his Liberal Democratic Party and its allies control of more than half of the upper house of parliament. Analysts say with the support of small nationalist parties, Abe may now have the numbers to push through a change to the constitutional bar on Japanese troops waging war. “We have always set a goal of revising the constitution...that is my duty as president,” Abe said. “But the party does not have more than two-thirds of seats in both chambers by itself, so I don’t expect the draft would pass as is,” he said, referring to the parlia-

S

uperstar Salman Khan is elated that his admirers liked his stint as a wrestler in his latest release “Sultan”. The Ali Abbas Zafar-directed movie, which released on Eid, is about a man, who finds his metier rather late in life, propelled by his love for a female wrestler (Anushka Sharma) who has no doubts about what she wants to do with herself. “Thx for appreciating sultan” he wrote on his Twitter account. The “Dabangg” star also mentioned about his IIFA 2016 performance. Salman performed after a gap of four years at International Indian Film Academy awards. “Wld u want to watch my performance on #iifa tonite. sm thing like this..” he continued in his tweet. Salman-starrer crossborder drama “Bajrangi Bhaijaan” won the best picture of the year award at the ceremony.

tevie Wonder has closed London’s BST festival with a meaningful but meandering stroll through his landmark double album, Songs In The Key Of Life. The 66-year-old played for almost four hours, backed by a razor-sharp band of more than 20 musicians. Addressing recent outbreaks of violence, Wonder said he wanted music to bring people together “in this horrible time we’re living in. “Choose love over hate... kindness over meanness, hope over no hope at all.” The soul legend said it “breaks my heart” that songs

like Love’s In Need Of Love Today and Village Ghetto Land remained relevant, “almost 40 years” after he wrote them. The tracks, which both appear on the first volume of Songs In The Key Of Life, tackle topics including racial hatred, police corruption and political inertia. “I’m not happy that those conditions still exist in the world,” Wonder told the 65,000-strong crowd in Hyde Park. The sentiment was woven into the fabric of the show: Pastime Paradise gained the gospel refrain, “we shall over-

come”; while Wonder added a raw, powerful cover of Curtis Mayfield’s peace anthem People Get Ready to his set. “Tell all the leaders of the world to cut the bull... and fix it,” he implored the audience. “We were all made in God’s image. When you hate someone, you’re hating that image. “If I’m blind and I can see it, you can see it too.” His comments were applauded by an audience that included stars Julianne Moore, Bradley Cooper, Natalie Portman and Martin Freeman, supermodel Naomi Campbell and musicians Jarvis Cocker and Emeli Sande. The Songs In The Key Of Life set wrapped up with the joyous, Latin-funk excursion Another Star (prompting spontaneous conga lines around Hyde Park) but Wonder still had time left before the curfew. Calling himself “DJ Tick Tick Boom” the star played recordings of Kiss and When Doves Cry, in tribute to his friend, and musical protégé, Prince.

The album, a joint venture between Dolly Records and Sony Music Nashville, will be available August 19th. Musically, “Pure & Simple” lives up to its name: the uncluttered production gets its shine from tasteful washes of mandolin, pedal steel and strums of acoustic guitar. Pure & Simple also includes a pair of older songs with the new offerings, including “Tomorrow Is Forever” — formerly a duet from her days with Porter Wagoner. “That’s a song I always loved and I just did it as a solo,” says Parton. “And I did a song that was actually in the Coat of Many Colors

Sole Russian athlete in Rio rejects accusations Moscow, Jul 11 (IANS): Long jumper Darya Klishina, who is the sole Russian athlete to get the International Association of Athletics Federations’ (IAAF) nod to take part in international competitions, on Monday rejected accusations of betraying her home country. The IAAF rejected the applications of all Russian athletes for admission to international competitions, including the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, amid a doping scandal in Russian sports, except for Klishina who was training in the United States, reports TASS. Darya said she was grateful to the IAAF for this decision and also expressed her support for Russian athletes on her Facebook page. Later, some Facebook users left comments below Klishina’s message, accusing her of betrayal. “I want to note that I didn’t begin training with a US coach in the United States a month before that situation emerged. After all, I have been there for already three years. That is why, it seems incorrect for me to scold me and accuse me of betraying the home country,” the athlete said in an interview posted on the website of the All-Russian Athletics Federation (ARAF). “I’m waiting and hoping to the last that I won’t go to the Olympic Games alone and I want to believe that the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne (CAS) will pass a positive decision for all of us,” she added. The long jumper also said she had submitted an application for admission to international competitions

Portugal deserved to win: Ronaldo Paris, Jul 11 (Agencies): Portugal star and captain Cristiano Ronaldo praised his team for a deserved Euro 2016 success, saying they had proved their critics wrong. Eder scored a 109thminute winner as Fernando Santos’ men claimed a 1-0 victory over France in the final in Paris on Sunday. Ronaldo came off due to a knee injury in the first half, but returned to try and rally Portugal to a first major title from the sidelines. The Real Madrid forward lauded Portugal and felt they were worthy champions. “Portugal have deserved this after many years of sacrifice. No one believed in us,” Ronaldo said. “I had already won everything with clubs. I lacked something with the national team.” Ronaldo said he knew Lille striker Eder would score the winner. He said, “I’ve been in football a long time. I have a lot of feelings. I felt that he was the one who was going to score.”

European Athletics Championship bronze medallist Klishina filed an application with the IAAF for participation in the Rio Olympics in late June. The IAAF Council ruled on June 17 that only those Russian athletes would be admitted to international competitions, including the Rio Olympics, who would prove they were uninvolved in doping scandals. Russia’s Olympic Committee and 68 Russian athletes filed a lawsuit with the Court of Arbitration for Lausanne to challenge the IAAF’s decision to bar them from participation in the Olympic Games. Mourinho determined to unite Man Utd fans London, Jul 11 (Agencies): Jose Mourinho has called on Manchester United fans to play their part in the club’s future success. Mourinho has vowed to return United to the top of English football and has already signed Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Eric Bailly this summer, while Paul Pogba has been linked with a return to his former club from Juventus. But the former Chelsea boss told the club’s official website that fans have a role and he is determined to make them proud of their team again. “I understand that they expect a lot from me but I also expect a lot from them,” he said. “There is no chance we will be happy if we are not together and I think the passion they have for this club is really amazing.” “It’s a new chapter

in the club’s life. Always when you change a manager, I feel it is a sad moment but it is a new chapter now. We have brought a few new faces in, we will keep some others but, in the end, it doesn’t matter who the manager is, it doesn’t matter who the new players are or who is staying or leaving, it’s Man United and Man United is much more than any one of us.” United face Wigan in a friendly at the DW Stadium on Saturday in Mourinho’s first match in charge and his standards are high for the campaign ahead. “I’m not humble when I talk about targets, I’m quite aggressive on that. I want everything and everything is to win matches, play well, score goals, don’t concede goals… everything. I want everything.”

The cricket operations of both BCB and ECB are in continuous communication regarding the England tour of Bangladesh in October. They are in discussion with the tour-related matters, especially the logistics.” “A security delegate from England was supposed to come last month, but as they have tour of India after Bangladesh, I think they will do the security inspection of the two countries together. We will get to know when they get confirmation from the two boards.” Security has been an issue in the country previously with Australia postponing their Bangladesh tour last year before pulling out of the U19 World Cup following an advice from their government. “We have very good track record of hosting successful international events with the support from the government and the law enforcement departments,” Chowdhury said.

Murray celebrates after winning his match point to win his second Wimbledon title.

also has given me a little bit of extra motivation to work hard, train hard, and do all of the right things to give myself a chance to win these events,” he said. “A lot of people have said when Roger had kids, he started playing some of his best tennis. Novak, the same thing. I feel more motivated than ever just now.” Since his first Wimbledon win in 2013, Murray had been stuck in a rut in the majors, losing three finals and three semi-finals. Coping with back surgery late in 2013 and then the end of his partnership with coach Ivan Lendl left Murray at a low ebb. After splitting with another coach, Amelie Mauresmo, earlier this year, the Scot admits it was a sweet moment to get back to the top at Wimbledon. “I’m just really happy I managed to do it again after a lot of tough losses in the latter stages of the Slams over the last couple of years,” Murray said. “To do it twice here, an event where there is a lot of pressure on me to perform well, I’m very proud. From where I was kind of at the end of that year after I had the surgery, yeah, it’s been quite a long, long road back.” Crucially, Lendl returned to Murray’s side last month and the British No 1, who has won all 12 of his matches since then, paid tribute to the contribution of the man who also oversaw his previous major victories. “I do think he’s a leader. I trust in what he says, mainly because of the results we had the last time we worked together. I’ve played my best tennis under him,” Murray said.

Best is yet to come, says Murray

London, Jul 11 (Agencies): Andy Murray has warned his rivals that his best tennis is yet to come as he sets his sights on following up his second Wimbledon crown with more Grand Slam glory. The Briton outclassed Canadian powerhouse Milos Raonic with an imperious 6-4 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (7-2) victory on Centre Court. The 29-year-old, who became Britain’s first male Wimbledon singles champion for 77 years in 2013, is the 12th man to enjoy more than one All England Club triumph. Having suffered painful defeats in eight of his previous 10 Grand Slam finals, the world No 2 is now targeting more success in the coming years. “I still feel like my best tennis is ahead of me, that I

Portugal stun France to win Euro 2016

Portugal’s team celebrates with the trophy after winning the Euro 2016 final soccer match against France at the Stade de France in SaintDenis, north of Paris on Sunday. (AP/PTI) Paris, Jul 11 (IANS): Cristiano Ronaldo-less Portugal upset hosts France 1-0 in extra time of a breathtaking Euro 2016 final at the Stade de France to clinch their first major football title. It was substitute forward Eder who on Sunday night fired the winning shot from outside the box in the 109th minute, ending a match in which a dominant France failed to capitalise the absence of Ronaldo who had to leave the pitch weeping in the 25th minute due to an injury, reports Efe. Ronaldo, the leader of the Portuguese team, got an injury only seven minutes into the game when French midfielder Dimitri Payet put in a challenge on him and caught him with the follow-through, bringing play to a halt. Although the Real Madrid star goal-poacher contin-

ued playing for some time, he had to be replaced by Ricardo Quaresma in the 25th minute. The injury cast a shadow over the match. France were back in possession. France tried to apply the same plan they had used to knock out Germany and Iceland -- high precision and speed. Right from the start they had Portugal on the defensive, but the first half ended scoreless. Midfielder Moussa Sissoko made several flash runs as he injected a sudden burst of pace to send himself through. Besides Sissoko, playmaker Antoine Griezmann, who had scored six times to take the Golden Boot of the tournament, was a huge threat to Portugal. Once he was set up just in front of the gaol but he misdirected a header. And not much changed

in the second half either, with the French depending on Matuidi and Sissoko while Portugal’s Pepe provided leadership as the team defended tenaciously, slowed the game down and tried to survive until they could put together some kind of scoring combination. André-Pierre Gignac for France hit the side bar minutes before the 90 minutes of play and in the extra time, Raphaël Guerreiro, Portugal’s leftback, struck the cross-bar with a free-kick. It was then that 28-yearold Eder fired his blast that salvaged the match for Portugal. The Lille forward took a pass from Joao Moutinho in the 109th minute, cut onto his right, and unleashed the perfect strike from 25 yards towards the near-corner, beating a stretched France keeper and captain Hugo Lloris. The statistics showed

that France had the upper hand with 56 per cent ball possession and seven on-target shots. But Portugal keeper Rui Patricio performed brilliantly to deny the hosts’ a victory. The tough duel witnessed six yellow cards for Portugal and four for France. This was the four th meeting between Portugal and France in a major tournament. France have won the previous three, all in semi-finals -- Euro 1984, Euro 2000 and the 2006 World Cup. Portugal put in a defensive masterclass to deny the French the trophy on home soil. Fernando Santos’side, who have developed a flair for the dramatics, won their third match of the tournament in extra-time, after playing out to a sixth draw in seven games at Euro 2016. Portugal coach Fernando

Santos said: “I’ve always told the players that we’ve got great talent but we need to fight more than our opponents, run more than them and concentrate more than them. We have an amazing group.” The 61-year-old spoke highly of Ronaldo: “Our captain made a fantastic effort during this competition. He was criticised many times but he showed a fantastic team spirit. “Twice, he tried everything that was humanly possible to get back into the game but it wasn’t possible,” Santos added.

Griezmann wins Golden Boot

Antoine Griezmann finished on the losing side in the Euro 2016 final but the France forward won the Golden Boot after finishing top scorer at the tournament.

Griezmann failed to shine in Sunday’s showpiece as Portugal claimed a shock 1-0 win over the hosts, thanks to Eder’s extra-time strike. But the Atletico Madrid player’s six goals in the competition - three ahead of his nearest challengers - saw him claim a personal accolade. Griezmann, who had previously only scored in friendlies for France and who was deemed a 9/1 shot for the trophy, failed to find the net in his country’s opener against Romania but came off the bench to help seal a last-gasp win over Albania. He added two more in a last-16 encounter with Republic of Ireland, scored one and set up another in a 5-2 quarter-final thumping against Iceland and then starred with a double in the semi-final win over Germany. A flicked header that missed the target was the closest Griezmann came in the final as France fell short but only compatriot Michel Platini - with nine goals in 1984 - has scored more at one European Championship. Closest rival Cristiano Ronaldo - who was taken off injured in the first half - finished second by virtue of his superior number of assists, while Olivier Giroud was third with three goals and two assists, pipping Dimitri Payet, who had the same tally but played 50 minutes more. Wales’ Gareth Bale finished fifth after strikes against Slovakia, England and Russia in the group stages. Griezmann, who scored 32 goals for his club in all competitions last season, takes the title from 2012 winner, Spain’s Fernando Torres. Sharapova to miss Olympics LAUSA N N E , J u l 1 1 ( A g en c i e s ) : M a r i a Sharapova will not learn the result of her appeal against a two-year ban for doping until September 19, meaning the Russian will definitely miss the Olympics. The 29-year-old fivetime Grand Slam champion was suspended after testing positive for meldonium at the Australian Open in January, but appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland in June, claiming she did not know the drug had been banned at the start of 2016. A decision on that appeal was expected to come next week, which would have given her the chance to compete in Rio had she been successful. However, all parties have agreed to the delay so further evidence can be gathered and thoroughly reviewed. A statement from CAS read, “Due to the parties requiring additional time to complete and respond to their respective evidentiary submissions, and several scheduling

conflicts, the parties have agreed not to expedite the appeal. A decision is expected to be issued by September 19 2016.” I n t h e m e a n t i m e, Sharapova looks set to spend some of her time away from the sport studying at the prestigious Harvard Business School. Sharapova posted a photo of herself on Facebook at the end of last month, sitting next to a sign outside the institution. She wrote, “Not sure how this happened but hey Harvard! Can’t wait to start the program!”

Russia has never favoured Olympic Games boycott Moscow, Jul 11 (IANS): Russia has never backed boycotts of Olympic Games, President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman said on Monday, as the country awaits the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS)’s verdict on allowing its track and field athletes to compete at the Rio Games starting on August 5. “Russia has always condemned ideas of boycotting (Olympic Games), and has never been in favour of such ideas,” TASS quoted Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov as saying. Replying to a query whether he ruled out the possibility of Russia’s boycotting the Rio Olympics this summer, Peskov said once again: “Russia has always denounced the idea of boycotts”. He also pledged that the Russian athletes would go all the way to defend their right to participate in the summer Olympic Games.

“This is not a time for some emotional reactions, this is a time for legal formalities, which are underway,” the spokesman said in reply to reporters’ questions about permit for the Russian athletes to participate in the Olympics. He said “it is not long now to see relevant judicial decisions”. “Of course, as to the use of all kinds of judicial instruments, Russian athletes and those who defend the interests of the Russian athletes, will be using all mechanisms and will go all the way,” he pledged. Russia’s Olympic Committee and 68 Russian athletes filed a lawsuit with the Court of Arbitration for Lausanne to challenge the IAAF’s decision to bar them from participation in the Olympic Games. The CAS will hear the case on July 19 and announce its verdict no later than July 21.

Juventus offer Pogba new deal; may snub Man Utd WBO Asia title is no big deal: Vijender

Paul Pogba

Milan, Jul 11 (Agencies): Juventus have offered Paul Pogba a new contract in a bid to stave off interest from Manchester United, according to agent Mino Raiola. The central midfielder, subject of serious interest from United, is jetting off on holiday after France lost the European Championship final against Portugal on Sunday night. It is believed the package presented by Juventus will include a wage increase to around £130,000 a week. Raiola claimed he did not speak to Pogba about any potential switch away from Turin during Euro 2016 - but the pair are now expected to discuss their options. Jose Mourinho is keen to add a ‘fourth priority signing’ to his squad in the coming weeks and United expect to have a clear run at the 23year-old given Real Madrid’s indifference to the transfer fee quoted. President Florentino Perez is thought to be cool

about the prospect of spending in excess of £100million for Pogba. Raiola, meanwhile, has enjoyed a close relationship with United this summer following deals for two of his clients Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan. The Italian revealed on Monday morning that Pogba - who would need convincing of a move back to Old Trafford given their lack of Champions League football - could yet stay at Juventus. ‘There is a lot of talk about Paul’s future, but maybe he will not leave Juventus,’ he said. ‘He is in no rush to leave, and Juventus do not want him to go. They want him to renew his contract. ‘Paul is not desperate to move. We are very happy at Juventus and they are a club that want to keep their star players. ‘Juventus have treated Paul exceptionally well. They are a fantastic club and they believe in him.’

New Delhi, Jul 11 (PTI): It is the the biggest fight of his emergent professional career, but Indian boxing star Vijender Singh today said the WBO Asia title contest against Kerry Hope is no huge deal for him and he is taking it as just another stepping stone in the circuit. The 30-year-old dasher, who is unbeaten in the professional arena, has won all his bouts via konckouts. Eyeing a seventh knockout in what is meant to be a 10-round contest, Vijender said his approach to the contest is no different from the one he had for his previous bouts. “I won all my six bouts, the seventh is coming up one year into the circuit. So I am a pro now, I am feeling like a pro now,” Vijender told PTI ahead of the Saturday night showdown, which will feature seven undercard bouts apart from the main event.

“Saturday’s fight is not a be all or end all fight for me. It’s being built up like a big, big fight but for me it’s like any other fight. Get inside the ring, win it, come back and focus on the next. I have a lot to do, this fight is like one more step in my career. I don’t think it’s a big deal for me. For me ok, it’s a job, get done with it,” he said. Vijender is up against Hope, who brings with him an experience bank of 30 bouts, of which he has won 23, two of them knockouts. The Welsh-born Hope, who emigrated to Australia, was also a WBC middleweight champion and has moved a division to super middleweight to take on Vijender. Asked about his thoughts on Hope, India’s first Olympic and World Championships medallist said he prefers to focus on himself. “We are just doing our training. I am not bothered about what

he might be doing. I am just focussed on myself,” the strapping six-footer said. “I don’t think anybody needs to talk big, because ultimately the punch does the talking. If an opponent says something nasty and even if I talk back with something more nasty, that hardly makes a difference to the result inside the ring. So I prefer to talk in the ring because only there everyone would know who is best or better,” he explained. The title bout, a win in which would give him a crack at the top-15 of WBO rankings, comes exactly a year after he turned pro and Vijender said the timing couldn’t be more perfect. “This bout has come at the right time although it’s been just one year since I turned pro because I am not a 20-year-old greenhorn. I am an experienced guy and I train a lot,” he said.
