Governor urges NPF to reconcile
Zeliang, Rio & NPF Central team meet Governor separately Correspondent/Staff Reporter
KOHIMA/DIMAPUR, JUL 15 (NPN): Raj Bhavan on Saturday was the venue where rival NPF supporters of chief minster Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu and T.R. Zeliang met the Governor P.B. Acharya separately to appraise him of the ongoing political situation in the party. It was learnt that in the meetings held behind closed doors with rival NPF groups, the Governor urged upon them to reconcile their differences in the interest of the public of the state. The dissidents led by its leader T.R. Zeliang and Lok Sabha MP, Neiphiu Rio along with 43 legislators (36 NPF and 7 Independents) met the Governor in the afternoon. Meanwhile, in a press note issued by press secretary to T.R. Zeliang (DAN chairman and leaders of the NPF legislature party), Azeu Namcyn Hau, the delegation urged upon the Governor to uphold the Constitution as “abnormal functioning style of chief minister was totally
NSCN/GPRN reaffirms to uphold Aug 3 Framework DIMAPUR, JUL 15 (NPN): NSCN/GPRN in its joint council meeting of steering committee and council of kilonsers held on July 12 unanimously reaffirmed to uphold and defend the August 3, 2015 Framework Agreement signed between the NSCN and Government of India as two entities. MIP in a press note said that “the historic Agreement, which was made in consideration of the sovereign right of the Nagas and the security interest of India, will protect the right, the identity, the land and the future of the Nagas.” In this regard, MIP said: “as unanimously resolved by the joint council that individuals or organization that stands opposed to the Framework Agreement shall be termed as anti Naga National Issue and anti peace process.” NSCN/GPRN has therefore called upon all Naga people not to be misled by “certain section of people, who in order to safeguard their vested interest and ambition, have been sloganeering anti Framework agendas and trading away the birthright of the Nagas”.

unacceptable.” The note informed that the Governor admitted that “prima facie” he was convinced that T.R. Zeliang had clear majority. Acharya reportedly told the delegation that “any chief minister is fine with me provided he has majority support”. He also asked legislators not to break the BJP-NPF alliance for stability and development. Zeliang urged upon Acharya to uphold the spirit of majority rule as per the Constitution and to ask the minority government under Dr. Shürhozelie to step down instead of taking the fight legally in order to cling to power. The press note informed that Zeliang appealed to the Governor to direct the chief secretary not to issue any appointments or payments
besides (except) salaries under the state government. He described the termination of appointments of MLAs to various posts, withdrawal of allotment of bungalows and security cover and asking legislators to vacate the official bungalows within a week as “unbecoming of a leader”. He also maintained that the act of removal of independent MLAs as parliamentary secretaries could not be termed as internal crisis of NPF party as it only proved that the crisis involved DAN government. Zeliang also accused Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu of violating the Election Model Code of Conduct, which has been in force since June 29, by dismissing ministers, parliamentary secretaries, advisors and chairmen.
While being a candidate for the by-election, Zeliang said such actions on the part of Dr. Liezietsu amounted to influencing his own election and blatantly violating the model code of conduct. Neiphiu Rio accused Dr. Shürhozelie of a “dictatorial and autocratic attitude” and said he cannot run a “minority government and keep on taking policy decisions almost every day.” Rio also said the reconciliation in the party was “pick and choose” practiced by Liezietsu during 2014, 2015 and 2016. He said these indicated that Dr. Shürhozelie “does not want to reconcile with anybody, not in the interest of the party or in the interest of the Naga people.” Rio termed the revocation of his suspension as
KOHIM, JUL 15 (NPN): A major landslide that occurred at Viswema village on July 14 has completely cut off NH-29, which connects Nagaland and Manipur state. The massive landslide washed away almost 70 meters of the highway bringing traffic to a standstill. Most of the travellers, who were caught by surprise and stranded, were assisted by Viswema youth volunteers and village council. Sources said two excavators of the Border Road Organization (BRO) were pressed into action for fresh earth cutting. Light vehicles were directed to take alternate route-- Kohima to Kigwema to Chakhabama to Kidima and to Mao. However, sources said the alternate route was not pliable for heavy vehicles. According to an official bulletin, the SDO Jakhama, Alemwapang Longchar, said that initial work for repairing the road has been started by the BRO. He said that most of the heavy machineries would be arriving at night after which work will begin in full swing. SDO said that it could take three-four days for the
DIMAPUR, JUL 15 (NPN): Niuland Area Students’ Union (NASU), Kuhuboto Ghakhu Students’ Union (KGSU) and Ato Area Students’ Union (AASU) have served an ultimatum on the PWD (R&B) to construct a temporary suspension bridge over the Chathe River within 15 days. In a joint press release, NASU president, Mughaka Chophy, KGSU president, Akavi N Zhimomi and AASU president, Joel H Sumi, cautioned that failure to complete the suspension bridge within the stipulated time would compel them to take own course of action and for which the three student bodies would not be held responsible. The signatories said this was decided at an emergency joint meeting of three unions held at Kuhuboto town on July 14, 2017. The meeting discussed the issue pertaining to the collapse of RCC Steel Girder Bridge over Chathe River, near CIHSR (Referral Hospital) Dimapur.
They pointed out that collapse of bridge has drastically affected the lives of the people living beyond the area. The signatories also stated that the future of thousands of students was at stake as their only route has been cut off completely. Due to bridge collapse, the prices of essential commodities and transportation have skyrocketed overnight, they said, adding that it was also posing threat to emergency patients who need emergency medical attention. The three student unions stated that the alternative route (Showuba via Seithekima) was time consuming and in deplorable condition. In the light of the above, the union bodies have strongly demanded that PWD (R&B) construct a temporary suspension bridge, which would serve a great purpose especially to students and patients seeking medical attention. They further appealed to the department to expedite the construction of RCC Bridge.
DIMAPUR, JUL 15 (NPN): With reports of inflating prices of essential commodities and undue inconvenience being faced by common people due to bridge collapse at 4th Mile near Referral Hospital, the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Dimapur, Kesonyu Yhome, on Saturday notified that to address the issues some arrangements were being put in place with effect from July 17, 2017 in public interest. GUWAHATI, JUL 15 (AGENCIES): Floods in India’s northeast have killed at least 83 people and led to the death of three rare one-horned rhinoceros at a national park that has the world’s largest concentration of the species. The floods caused by torrential rains across the hilly states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Manipur over the past two weeks, have also triggered landslides. In all more than 2 million people have been displaced, authorities say. “Assam is the worst hit with 53 lives lost so far in floods and landslides with some 2 million people displaced,” Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal told Reuters. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sent a team of federal government officials, led by junior home minister Kiren Rijiju, to assess the damage. Overflowing Brahmaputra River has also completely marooned the Kaziranga wildlife sanctuary in Assam, forcing animals to flee to safer areas. In the wake of floods in the North East, Union Railway minister Suresh Prabhu asked senior rail officials to work in close coordination with state govern-
ments of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh and the NDRF to ensure smooth relief and rescue operations. He also asked officials to ensure that drinking water supply, food grains, medicines and healthcare facilities movement for NE was given priority and ensure their smooth transportation by Railways. Meanwhile, Manipur chief minister N. Biren Singh made an aerial survey of flood affected areas of Manipur on Saturday. He was accompanied by Works Minister Th. Biswajit, Chief Secretary R.R. Rashmi and Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Dr. J. Suresh Babu. The team took off from Kangla helipad at around 9:30 am and surveyed the flood affected areas for over one hour. The Central team also undertook an aerial survey along with the top officials of the State Government. Chief minister N. Biren Singh said that heavy rainfall and flood have severely affected the State and many areas were still submerged under flood water. Singh further said that the state government had not only announced the present situation as a ‘state calamity’ but also requested the central government to declare it as a ‘calamity of severe nature’.

a “mockery” and an eyewash since the public did not know the inside story. Rio blamed Dr. Shürhozelie as responsible for the present situation and wondered what was meant by reconciliation when Dr Shürhozelie his supporters organised rallies at Kohima and Chumukedima against the dissidents on Friday by “holding placards with insulting contents.” Others who spoke at the meeting included Imkong L. Imchen and Tokheho Yepthomi. NPF Central team also met the Governor Saturday evening and apprised the latter about the reconciliation process initiated by the party. NPF spokesperson Achumbemo Kikon said he had impressed upon the Governor that the party has put all effort to bring the leaders together since the current issue was an internal party matter. According to Kikon, Governor supported the idea of reconciliation among the party men and told them that he will uphold the Constitution and go by the verdict of the court. Since the matter was with the court, Kikon said that the Governor had asked all to not to issue any statements since it was sub judice.

DIMAPUR, JUL 15 (NPN): Dhansiri River Flood Control Board (DRFCB) has brought to the notice of the authorities concerned that the ongoing construction of suspension bridge at Old Dhansiri Bridge connecting Purana Bazaar and Urban Haat, the foundation pillar on Purana Bazaar side has been haphazardly built on loose soil. I n a p r e s s n o t e, DRFCB vice chairman/ PRO Hekuto Wotsa said that the workers initially dug an extra soil of six feet deep which was refilled with loose soil and pebbles with cemented topping. Owing to these, Wotsa said the foundation base was completely washed away (as seen in the photograph), thus exposing the poor workmanship which would lead to another disaster like the 4th Mile Chathe River Bridge.
