CPI-M will become extinct under Sitaram Yechury: Roy
Trinamool to launch ‘Booth chalo’ campaign in Tripura AGARTALA, JUN 30 (PTI/ IANS): Trinamool Congress vice president Mukul Roy Thursday claimed CPI-M has lost the “status” of a national party and would soon be “extinct” under the leadership of Sitaram Yechuri. “It (CPI-M) is an irrelevant party and it has lost the status of a national party now. It has forgotten class struggle and does not raise the slogan of people’s democratic revolution,” he said, adding “it would become extinct under its general secretary Sitaram Yechury”. Roy, who was here to inaugurate TMC office here, said party chief Mamata Banerjee is the only leader who could “oust” CPI-M from power in West Bengal and the party would be able to oust the Left party under her leadership. Trinamool Congress led by Banerjee would wrest power from Left Front in the 2018 assembly elections in Tripura to provide development and good governance in the state, Roy claimed. Baner jee, he said, is scheduled to visit Tripura on August 9. “Mamata Banerjee will visit Tripura several times and all the important leaders of our party would continuously visit the state to intensify the movement for ousting the Marxist government. In all the sixty assembly seats in Tripura there would be only one candidate - Mamata Banerjee. “Our party will wrest

Mukul Roy power from the Left Front here to develop the state and to provide good governance. There is no job opportunity for the youths, healthcare system has collapse and people were facing food crisis. There is no new industry in the state ... We will throw this government out of power and would see how much strength Chief Minister Manik Sarkar has in his arms,” Roy said. Roy said TMC believes in well being of the tribals and would do everything to provide more autonomy to them but would not in anyway support the demand for a separate state. “We do not believe in dividing a state. We want the tribals to remain in the mainstream and ensure that their demands are met. In West Bengal the demand for Gorkahaland is not heard anymore because their basic problems are being addressed within the constitutional framework,” he added. All the six MLAs, including Sudip Royburman,
With an aim to oust the Left Front government in Tripura, the Trinamool Congress will organise “Booth chalo” (march to booth) campaign, party said. “TMC would launch ‘Booth chalo’ campaign to oust the Left Front government in Tripura in 2018 assembly polls,” Roy told a gathering after inaugurating the TMC party headquarters in Agartala. “The Trinamool led by Mamata Banerjee would launch a massive campaign against the Left Front government in Tripura on August 9, the day when ‘Quit India’ movement was launched by Mahatma Gandhi,” Roy said, adding that the party would hold a “massive rally” that day. “Entire Trinamool leadership in West Bengal would stand behind the Tripura party unit and people to oust CPI-M from power. A government of ‘Maa Mati Manush’ (mother, earth and people) would be established in Tripura in 2018 assembly polls,” Roy said. “ Pe o p l e o f Tr i p u r a would organise a movement against the misrule of the Left Front government here,” said Roy, who was accompanied by party MP Prasun Banerjee and other leaders.

Motorcycle rally demanding ILP Correspondent IMPHAL, JUN 30: A motorcycle rally was taken out touching four valley districts of Manipur on Thursday, where more than 500 youths took part demanding a mechanism to check influx of migrants into Manipur. The rally was taken out under the aegis of Students’ Wing of Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System (JCILPS) was flagged off by JCILPS convener-incharge BK Moirangcha from AMSU office complex, Imphal around 10 a.m. The rallyists after covering Imphal-Mao section of NH-2 upto Sekmai moved to Nambol then Tidim road from where they moved along the Mayang Imphal road. From there they took Imphal-Burma Sugnu Road and converged at the originating place before dispersing themselves. Talking to reporters, convener of the Students’ Wing of the JCILPS Oinam Nabachandra demanded that Manipur government should introduce a new bill similar to ILPS and pass it in the next session of the Assembly. He alleged that the state government had done nothing
to obtain President’s ascent to the bill, The Protection of Manipur People’s Bill-2015. Justifying the demand for introduction of ILPS or a similar mechanism, he said it would not only protect the people residing in the valley area but in the whole of Manipur. He maintained that they would carry on the ongoing mass agitation relentlessly until ILPS or a similar mechanism to protect the indigenous people of the state is put in place. The student wing leader further demanded the points which led President to reject the PMP Bill 2015. A new bill should be drafted after taking into consideration of all the points which led the government of India to reject the bill. JCILPS would be compelled to sustain and intensify the ongoing mass movement if the government failed to initiate due process to pass the new proposed bill within a stipulated time. Informing that the Student Wing of JCILPS was preparing to observe the death anniversary of Sapam Robinhood, Nandababu called upon the student community to participate in the observation slated for July 8.

India successfully IS terror module: 5 arrested 9 killed, fireman Disqualify MLAs holding Parl test-fires surfaceinjured in fire at Secy posts in other states: AAP to-air missile persons get judicial custody medical store Have video evidence to prove innocence: Mohaniya
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal with deputy CM Manish Sisodia talks with a muslim cleric at an Iftar party hosted by Delhi CM in New Delhi on Thursday. (PTI) NEW DELHI, JUN 30 (PTI): The AAP today demanded the Election Commission disqualify over 100 legislators holding the post of parliamentary secretary in 11 states and was asked by the poll panel to approach the President and the Governors of the states concerned with its plea. A delegation of AAP leaders, led by the party’s Punjab Convenor Sanjay Singh, met Election Commissioner A K Joti and submitted a list of such 130 MLAs who are apparently enjoying a number of perks in several states, including Punjab, Gujarat and Nagaland. “We gave a list of chief parliamentary secretaries and parliamentary secretaries across several states to the Commission and have demanded that they be disqualified since they are being given the facility of cars, bungalows, fat salaries, police escort and status as ministers,” Singh told reporters after the meeting. AAP said Arunachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghayala, Nagaland and Punjab have MLAs holding such offices. Singh claimed these posts “clearly” come under the purview of office of profit which
merits their disqualification as MLAs. Party units in those states have made similar complaints to the respective Chief Electoral Officers there. “The EC suggested that we approach the Governors of the states concerned and the President. We will start the process tomorrow,” he said. Meanwhile, the Commission has sent a letter to the Delhi Chief Secretary, seeking details of the facilities being provided to the 21 AAP MLAs appointed as Parliamentary Secretaries as part of its proceedings into the constitutionality of the posts. The Election Commission will commence personal hearing for all the MLAs as requested by them on July 14. In March last, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had appointed the MLAs as Parliamentary Secretaries to assist ministers of the Delhi government. The AAP government then sought to get this legal sanction with retrospective effect by amending the Delhi Members of Legislative Assembly (Removal of Disqualification) Act, 1997. Early this month, the President denied assent to the Bill which sought to protect them from disqualification.
CPI(M) to rectify differences in tactical line, says Yechury KOLKATA, JUN 30 (PTI): The CPI-M Thursday said it will rectify on July 10 the differences in tactical line adopted in West Bengal against what was decided by the central committee of the party held earlier this month. “Why there was no consonance? What is the rectification that needs to be done? That is something that the politburo along with the state leadership and the state committee will decide on July 10,” CPI-M general secretary Sitaram Yechury told reporters when asked about the future of the Left-Congress alliance in the state. In the central committee meeting of the party, he said, three things had been decidedthe first one being that in the backdrop of terror, the party’s objective will be to build the broadest possible people’s resistance. The second point, he said, was the tactical line that was adopted in West Bengal was not in consonance with the understanding of the central committee. The third was that rectifi-
Techie murder: Police release photo of suspect CHENNAI, JUN 30 (PTI): A photo of the suspect in the murder of a 24-year-old woman IT professional was today released by the city police, four days after they made public CCTV images of the incident at a railway station here. Police released a ‘file photo’ of the man, saying it had been ‘developed’ by them. The photo shows a man wearing blue shirt and black pants, similar to what was seen in the CCTV footage released by the police on Sunday. No further details were made available. Police are yet to crack the murder of S Swathi, who was hacked to death on Friday at the busy Nungambakkam railway station, prompting a furore by the civil society and political parties. The woman, employed with IT major Infosys, was allegedly killed by an unidentified man on a platform while she was waiting to board a train on her way to office around 6:30 AM.
cation needs to be done. “The process has begun. If anything needs to be rectified it will be done,” Yechury said. On reservations expressed by other Left parties in the Left Front against allying with the Congress, he said, let them discuss in the meeting and take a decision. Speaking at a program of the National Book Agency, Yechury said there has been a rightward shift in politics in India and the rest of the world. In India, the shift is led by the BJP and RSS, he said, adding that attempts are being made to change the character of the republic. Targeting the Narendra Modi government, he said they promised two crore jobs every year but only 1.3 lakh jobs were created. However, he said, “We have not yet allowed India to become a fascist country from a parliamentary democracy but we are moving towards that direction”.
AAP legislator Dinesh Mohaniya, facing allegations of molestation and sexual harassment, Thursday claimed he had evidence in the form video footage to show that charges against him are “baseless” and will produce it in the court. The Sangam Vihar MLA was arrested while addressing a press conference on June 25 and was released yesterday after his bail application was granted by a city court. “I have video footage that clearly shows that the complainant woman left my office in a normal state and there was no chaos. She even stayed there for 5-7 minutes talking to other people which shows nothing was amiss,” Mohaniya said. He said that although he had no footage of the meeting with a group of women inside the room but the video he had “clearly showed” that nothing had happened as was alleged by the complainant. Expressing his faith in the judiciary, he said “the allegations against me are false and baseless and it is a conspiracy of Delhi Police and some BJP leaders.” He also denied the Delhi Police charge that he was arrested as he had not received two notices to join the probe registered against him. The MLA was booked on June 23, a day after allegedly misbehaving with a group of women who had gone to him with a complaint regarding water crisis in their locality. The charges of molestation and sexual assault were added later by police following statements before a magistrate by two complainants. Delhi AAP convener Dilip Pandey lashed out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Delhi Police for creating an “atmosphere of fear” among the party MLAs.
BALASORE (ODISHA), JUN 30 (PTI): India Thursday successfully test fired a new surface-to-air missile, developed jointly with Israel, from a defence base off Odisha coast. The medium range missile (MR-SAM), a product of joint venture between India and Israel, was successfully test launched from a mobile launcher in the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur at around 08.15 hours, a DRDO official said. “The test launch was a grand success and it met all the targets,” he said. The missile positioned at launch pad-3 of the ITR swung in to action after getting signal from the radars to intercept a moving aerial target supported by an unmanned air vehicle (UAV) ‘Banshee’ over the Bay of Bengal, officials said. Apart from the missile, the system includes a Multi Functional Surveillance and Threat Aler t Radar (MF STAR) for detection, tracking and guidance of the missile, they said. “The missile along with MF-STAR will provide the users with the capability to neutralise any aerial threats,” said a Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) scientist. Research Centre Imarat (RCI), a laboratory of DRDO based at Hyderabad, has jointly developed this missile in collaboration with Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), he said. A new production facility to deliver 100 missiles a year has been established for such type of long rang and medium range surface-to-air missiles at M/s Bharat Dynamics Limited, India. The missile, which was initially proposed to be tested yesterday, was deferred in the last moment for today. Earlier, Indian Navy had successfully test launched the long range surface-to-air missile (LR-SAM). The test was undertaken on the Western Seaboard by INS Kolkata on December 30, 2015, officials said.

MUMBAI, JUN 30 (PTI): Nine persons, including five children, were killed and a fireman was injured when a fire broke out at a medical store in a chawl in suburban Andheri this morning, police said. Among the five deceased children was a 3-month-old infant, they said. The fire occurred early this morning at ‘Wafa’ medical store located on the ground floor of a chawl in Juhi Galli on Wireless Road in Andheri, Mumbai police spokesman Ashok Dudhe said. Eight persons were initially killed in the blaze. Later, a seriously injured woman also succumbed to her burns at a hospital, police said. The families of the victims were staying on the first and second floors of the premises, he said. According to police and fire brigade officials, the electric wiring and other power installations in the 120 sq ft medical store caught fire. The blaze then spread to other floors of the ground plus two-floor chawl in which nearly 17-18 people were staying. Prima facie, the police and fire officials suspect that because of a very small internal staircase in the chawl, the victims were trapped inside the premises and got engulfed in the fire. “The deceased were sleeping on the floors above the medical store in the ground plus two floors chawl and could not find a passage to come out,” said P S Rahangdale, chief of the fire brigade staff of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. He said that short-circuit was suspected to have triggered the fire, but an investigation was underway to ascertain the exact cause. Following the mishap, the victims were rushed to the nearby Cooper Hospital. The deceased have been identified as - Saburiya Mozin Khan (52), Siddik Khan (35), Rabil Khan (28), Sabiya Khan (28), Mozhel Khan (8), Unnihay Khan (5), Aliza Khan (4), Tubba Khan (8) and Altaz Khan (3 months), fire brigade said.

Tax amnesty
rime Minister Narendra Modi has issued a stern warning to tax defaulters to voluntarily declare their undisclosed incomes under an amnesty scheme latest by September 30,2016 otherwise the government would not be in a position to help them. It is not the first time that the government of India had announced amnesty for tax dodgers if they declare their undisclosed sources of income or untaxed money within some period of time. It may be recalled that in 1997, in the days before P Chidambaram presented his famous dream budget, one of the proposals under discussion in North Block, which houses the Ministry of Finance, was a tax amnesty scheme. The road shows and marketing spearheaded by then finance secretary Singh worked — the government netted Rs 10,000 crore in taxes alone, which meant that the mobilisation was substantially higher, putting in the shade five other amnesty schemes launched earlier. Modi, under scathing attack from the Congress for failing to make good his 2014 campaign pledge to bring back black money within 100 days of coming to power, has reminded those hiding undisclosed money to come clean. The Government had promised in the 2015 Budget that it would take swift action to bring back to India undisclosed offshore income and assets of residents that had escaped being taxed in India. This resulted in the Undisclosed Foreign Income and Assets (Imposition of Tax) Bill, 2015 being introduced on March 20, 2015. On May 11, the Lok Sabha passed the Bill, now called the Black Money (Undisclosed Foreign Income and Assets) and Imposition of Tax Bill, 2015 (with certain minor changes). The Rajya Sabha assented to this Bill on May 14, 2015 and on May 26,2015 the Bill received the assent of the President of India (the “Black Money Act”). Originally slated to come into effect from April 1, 2016, the Black Money Act has now come into effect from July 1, 2015. The stated purpose of the Black Money Act is to deal with the menace of black money and this Act seeks to, among other things, levy tax on the undisclosed assets and income held abroad by Indian residents and Indian-sourced income of non-residents invested in assets abroad. The Black Money Act provides for a penalty up to 90% of the value of an undisclosed asset in addition to a tax at 30%, as well as sentences of rigorous imprisonment, to be imposed in certain cases. The legislature has introduced a one-time compliance opportunity for a limited period (“Compliance Scheme”) for persons who are affected by the Black Money Act to provide a chance to come clean and streamline their affairs. There is also a proposal to bring more people within the income tax net. According to official data, only 3 per cent of over 1 billion people in the country are estimated to pay income tax. Those who earn Rs.21,000 and more (per month) have to pay taxes, but many small businesses, professionals (such as doctors and lawyers) and rich farmers do not pay taxes. A total of 2.87 crore individuals filed income tax returns for 2012-13, but 1.62 crore of them did not pay any tax. If both work, then the government will be flush with funds and that is good news for several state governments.
DailyDevotion Do It Now!
Agree with your adversary quickly… —Matthew 5:25 In this verse, Jesus Christ laid down a very important principle by saying, “Do what you know you must do— now. Do it quickly. If you don’t, an inevitable process will begin to work ‘till you have paid the last penny’ (Matthew 5:26) in pain, agony, and distress.” God’s laws are unchangeable and there is no escape from them. The teachings of Jesus always penetrate right to the heart of our being. Wanting to make sure that my adversary gives me all my rights is a natural thing. But Jesus says that it is a matter of inescapable and eternal importance to me that I pay my adversary what I owe him. From our Lord’s standpoint it doesn’t matter whether I am cheated or not, but what does matter is that I don’t cheat someone else. Am I insisting on having my own rights, or am I paying what I owe from Jesus Christ’s standpoint? Do it quickly— bring yourself to judgment now. In moral and spiritual matters, you must act immediately. If you don’t, the inevitable, relentless process will begin to work. God is determined to have His child as pure, clean, and white as driven snow, and as long as there is disobedience in any point of His teaching, He will allow His Spirit to use whatever process it may take to bring us to obedience. The fact that we insist on proving that we are right is almost always a clear indication that we have some point of disobedience. No wonder the Spirit of God so strongly urges us to stay steadfastly in the light! (see John 3:19-21). “Agree with your adversary quickly….” Have you suddenly reached a certain place in your relationship with someone, only to find that you have anger in your heart? Confess it quickly— make it right before God. Be reconciled to that person— do it now!

Nagaland Post, Dimapur friday, July 1, 2016
F
ive days before he was called Home like a bolt from the blue on 20.6.2016, I talked to Rev. Lano over the phone and he said, “Brother my legs are swollen and I am a little discouraged.” I replied saying he should not be discouraged as many are praying to grant him long life. Then he enquired about my welfare saying he just finished praying for me and my family. That was the last time we talked to each other. As he was not in his best physical form for the last two years, I would advise him often as a doctor on how to take care of himself better. I suggested him two things saying, “Brother, instead of gospel programmes every week make it on alternate weeks and then do some brisk walking exercise every morning.” Then he would reply saying, “Brother, so many invitations are coming and I cannot say ‘no’. Even for next year, I have some programmes booked already. Then every morning before I wake up, people are waiting for me for prayer, so where in my time for exercise?” At the beginning of each year he would call me and say, “Brother this year I want to bring one lakh souls to God so please pray for me. I do not want money, fame or anything. I just want to live long and win souls.” Such was the commitment of this great man of God whose entire passion was soul winning. The last time we went together for a gospel programme at Tadubi in Mao area along with IEF team of young preachers, Achet and Akumla in the first week of April, 2015, he collapsed in the bath room. But he recovered after IV drips were given and he was able to preach with his undaunted spirit and many souls were saved. During the crusade a cancer patient who was bedridden was prayed for

and he was able to get up and walk after the prayer. Early part of this year a big crusade was conducted at Pangsha near Myanmar border after which he travelled non-stop to Mokokchung for nearly ten hours. This was not the only one but often he travelled several hours even late at night for gospel programmes which was responsible for wearing him out so fast. He did not count his life dear to him for the sake of the gospel. I came to know this great man of God in the year 1985 when I was working in Tuensang Civil hospital. He preached in the local ground about brevity of life and the need to prepare for our eternity. Many were touched and gave their lives to Christ. From that day I knew he was a very special instrument of God. I had the great blessing of associating with Rev Lano for the last many years as prayer partners and working together in gospel programmes. He was so happy when he was able to go to Jerusalem and preach in a church last year and he was so keen to share with me about Jerusalem. But alas, we could never get the chance to listen to his Jerusalem story. Among many preachers I know, Rev. Lano was very unique and special. I think he was great and powerful because he was so humble and had a compassionate heart for sinners, filled with special anointing power of the Holy Spirit, convicting sinners and comforting the broken hearted. He would often preach on love, compassion and manifold blessing of God for believers and would ask the congregation, “Is not that wonderful, why not give your heart to Jesus?” The appeals were so powerful and penetrating that most listeners in the congregation would give their lives to Christ.
Today even many believers are sceptical about the miracle working power of the Holy Spirit. But Rev. Lano was in full operation in the power of the Holy Spirit. He shared with me about many miracles that took place in his ministry including raising the dead. Years ago in Bodoland a mother brought her dead child from a distance of 3 hours journey hoping to be raised through the prayer of Rev. Lano during the crusade. After the prayer the child was raised and there was a mighty act of conversions by seeing the miracle. On 24.8.2014 in Mon Town, the wife of one Mapung Konyak was raised from death when he prayed- “Lord if it is your will please raise this woman so that people of Mon Town may believe in the power of God.” And there are many more to narrate but here space and time will not permit. Surely Rev. Lano was a very special messenger God sent during our times for a very special purpose. Only how we all wish he could live for another ten years to bring many more souls to the kingdom of God. Yes my brother has finished his mission successfully like Paul...” none of these things move me, nor do I count my life dear to me, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I have received from the Lord Jesus...and will see my face no more.” Acts 20:24-25 Brother Lano, we love you so dearly and miss you so much. Please wait for us at the Golden Gate which was shown to you in the year 2004 where only those who have the testimony can enter. There you tell me your stories of Old and New Jerusalem. Till then, Good Bye my dearly beloved brother. Dr. A. Loso Chalai
Thank you, Isak Chishi Swu
sak Chishi Swu, one of the grand patriarchs of the Naga National Movement, is no more. His departure has broken many a heart and drained many a tear from the eyes of the people he had enamored with his fatherly figure. His departure has also resurrected many buried memories of yesteryears. The footprint he has left behind on the pages of Naga history will remind us that a great soul had once walked on the rough terrain of Naga struggle for self determination. The people of Pochury will cherish the memory of Mr. Swu in particular for his leadership in the conception and consolidation of our identity as a distinct tribe duringthe nascent period. At an individual level I had experienced no association of particular interest with Mr. Swu. The one and only occasion I happened to meet him was in the year 2002, during one of the Peace Consultations held in the Hotel Alexander, Bangkok, where I went as a part of the Naga delegation, representing my tribe. One day during the brief recess of our marathon consultation, I was introduced to the collective leadership as a lone delegate from Pochury community. On hearing the name Pochury he walked over to me and said, “Brother Rümatho, you must take care of our Pochury people.” He shared some other concerns as well but these words have stuck to my mind to this day. While others eulogize Mr. Swu
for what he means to them, it befits the occasion to mention here that the first Primer and Hymnal entitled Küchiepha Apowa in Pochury Nagaand Zhüle Kümhie Zapha in Pochury Naga were published on January 1, 1961 and printed in Rangoon at the Burma Union Press, Regd: Rgn.008. No. 26, 35th Street, Rangoon. The publication was made possible through the sustained help and support of Isak Chishi Swu, who was then the Alie/Foreign Affair Secretary and Kughato Sukai, Ato Kilonser of the Federal Government of Nagaland. Two years after its publication it was brought home from Layshee by Thuchu (Thungchamo) in March 1963. The subsequent editions of Hymn Book in Pochury have not deviated substantially both in style and in content. As a people and as a tribe, we owe him so much and so we wish to thank him so much. Isak Chishi Swu is a name that will continue to live in our hearts for generations to come. May God shower His blessings upon his good work and may his soul rest in peace with our Lord, Jesus Christ. To Mrs. Swu and her children, as you walk through the dark valley of the shadow of death, we convey our deepest sympathy and condolences. May the God who is able to protect you from all harms keep you and watch over you. Rümatho Nyusou, Meluri
futsero town and its surrounding villages have been in darkness for 26 days. A few rich people are able to light their homes with small generators. However, poor people are living in a pathetic condition. The break-down of Transformer and non-restoration is adversely affecting the life of people. Let us consider a few things. 1. Educational Institutions are badly affected. They cannot do many of the Office works. The officials documents cannot be printed. The colleges have to do correspondence with universities on online. Students’ registration cannot be done without power supply. Small generator does not give consistent power supply. It spoils electronic gadgets due to fluctuation of power supply. The teachers find difficult to prepare their lessons without electricity. The students cannot do home works/assignments. They cannot do paper presentation. The electrical power failure is adversely affecting the normal functioning of educational institutions in and around Pfutsero Town. 2. The Hospital is experiencing difficulty in storing Vaccine, doing various tests. Patients cannot be treated in darkness. Do power Department authorities have a concern for patiencts? 3. The non-restoration of electricity has affected business transaction, which are done through electronic media. The carpenters who work with electrical tools are now without works. It is also learnt that in Chizami Sub-Division, within eight months six transformers spoiled and took many days to replace them. Now, the electricity is restored, but the small scale industries like Saw Mills are not allowed to run for fear of spoiling the Transformer. Many people earn their daily bread and sponsor their children education with a meager wages earned from these small scale industries. The Power Department is now depriving them by not supplying power to these
Rio’s condolence message
Dear Mrs. Euster Chishi Swu I am deeply pained by the demise of late Isak Chishi Swu, Chairman of the NSCN/ GPRN. His death is indeed a huge loss and an enormous setback for all Nagas especially at this juncture of our political history. Late Isak Chishi Swu was one of the greatest patriots who sacrificed everything he had for the rights and aspirations of the Naga people. As we mourn for the departed soul we recall the steadfastness with which our beloved leader Isak Chishi Swu held the national aspiration. Unflinching and unwavering he held on to the cause of the Naga Nation. For such a man the hardship and suffering that came his way only strengthened his determination in his belief that Nagas were free people. That freedom was too precious a thing not to be squandered away for personal gain was deeply etched in his heart. The Naga political movement, which is today recognized by the Government of India, owes much to this great leader who never made any compromise but continued to fight for what he believed in till his last breath.
After the signing of the cease fire agreement with the Government of India, he became an ambassador for peace and continued to tirelessly work for achievement of an honorable and amicable political solution that would pave the way for lasting peace and progress. His contributions will be remembered by coming generations as he has played a contributing and integral role in the story of the Naga journey. His sacrifices, many of which we will never know, will never go in vain as he has been an inspiration to generations of Nagas. His passing away has left a deep void and an irreplaceable vacuum. As a signatory of the historic Framework Agreement and as one of the tallest Naga personalities, his place in history will be recorded in letters of gold. While his presence will be missed by all sections, we also take this opportunity to pay tribute to one of the great sons of the Naga soil. We thank him for his contributions and sacrifices, we salute him for his commitment to the Naga cause, we pay respect to him for being a messenger of
Frequently asked questions on water quality • Why water is saltish ? Chlorides give water a salty taste, but the intensity of the taste depends upon the ionic composition. Thus in some water the salty taste is detected at about 200 mg/lit but if the water contains high concentrations of calcium magnesium, the salty taste is not noticed even at 1000 mg/lit. • Why water on standing becomes turbid and brownish yellow? Normally some ground water may contain ferrous iron in the form of its bicarbonate, which is in dissolved condition. On exposure to air, ferrous iron is oxidised to insoluble ferric iron hydroxide and is seen in the form of brownish yellow precipitate. • Why soap is not lathering ? This is due to the property of excessive hardness in water. Hardness is mainly contributed by calcium and magnesium. • Why boiled rice is hard and yellow in colour? This is due to the property of high alkalinity in water. Alkalinity is mainly contributed by bicarbonate.
• Why dal becomes hard on cooking ? This is due to high alkalinity of water. • Why boiled meat/ food becomes poor in quality ? This may be due to the high hardness of water. • What is the reason for algae growth ? Trace level of phosphorous and nitrogen aid for algae growth. Sunlight or stray light can help this process. • How white scales deposits in vessels (when water is stored/boiled) ? The scales are due to precipitation of calcium carbonate from water. Scale formation is notable when the water is temporary hardness. The water after filtration can be used without any harm. • What is the reason for oily suspensions noted on the surface of water in wells ? This is also due to precipitation of calcium carbonate in water. • How white de posits blocks the PVC pipes ? This is due to deposition of calcium carbonate scales. This is found particularly when compressor pumps are used.
small scale and self-reliance industries. The workshops in Pfutsero Town are forced to close down for they cannot do wielding, do Tyre works and painting. 4. The authorities of the Power Department, the concern minister and public leaders should look into the need and welfare of the citizens. The bills that the citizens pay should be utilized to restore electricity. It is doubtful, whether the collected bills are faithfully deposited. If it is deposited then there should not be any shortage of money to purchase new Transformer. If the bills are not sufficient, the concern department should make consumers understand and enhance electric bill. Now, it is almost a month without electricity, will the Power Department collect electric bills from the consumers? 5. The consumers have right to demand good power supply. The authorities seem to be taking advantage of the silent consumers. Now it is time that public voice out their right. The supply of electricity is the responsibility of the State government. The collected bills should be sufficient to manage Power Department and supply sufficient power to the consumers. We all know that Manipur Government has made Pre-Paid Electricity Bill. The citizens of Manipur State have sufficient and regular power supply. Is Nagaland Government capable to introduce Pre-Paid Bill system? This will help both the State Government and consumers. The consumers will also be very judicious in using electricity. Since the formation of the statehood, the citizens have not experienced regular power supply for 24 hours. There is always load shedding, power cut off for onetwo hours or even whole day and night times. There is no prospect to improve the economy of people and progress unless there is regular power supply. Yiepetso Wezah, Mission Colony, Pfutsero town
• How horizontal brownish or brownish-black streaks found in teeth ? This is caused in children due to excess fluoride in water. The horizontal streaks formed are permanent and cannot be treated or removed. • Why rotten egg smell occurs in water ? In the absence of sufficient air and under anaerobic conditions, hydrogen sulfide is formed due to putrefaction of organic matter in water. This causes rotton egg smell in water. • Why brownish or brownish-black slimes formed in water conveying pipes ? May be due to growth of iron bacteria in water. • Explain the death of infants due to blue baby disease . High nitrate in water causes blue baby disease. The blood of the children affected by the disease turns blue and the children die of asphyxiation. The disease affects only infants below six month age. Adults are not affected. Breast fed children are not affected by this disease. • How clothes loose their
shining and become dirty after some washings ? This is due to presence of high hardness and iron in water used for washing. Good lathering can occur with detergents but the cleaning action in hard water will not be always satisfactory. • Explain reason for formation of slime in closet in toilets and in the floors of bathroom . This happens due to microbial causing micro-organisms (called pathogens) in water. • Whether the presence of septic tank may affect the quality of water in nearby wells. If the seepage from septic tank mixes with well water, it can definitely affect the quality of water and can cause water borne disease. Mixing of septic tank waste or sewage in drinking water can be easily identified by test in for ammonia, phosphate and fecal coliform. There should be sufficient distance (at least 20-50 ft) between the septic tank and a well. A Roland Kikon, Chemist, State Water Quality Testing Laboratory, PHED, Nagaland, Dimapur

His life, his vision, and his sweat, blood and tears will be remembered and continue to inspire the younger generations. Even as we pay tribute to the departed soul, let us recommit ourselves to the legacy he has left behind. All sections of Naga society must take the opportunity of this solemn occasion to rededicate ourselves to come together to pursue peace so that sacrifices of great patriots like late Isak Chishi Swu will not be in vain. It has rightly been said that ‘Peace is not the absence of violence Peace is the presence of justice’. Our greatest homage to him will be to pursue what he strived for and to stand up for justice so that we can live in peace and harmony. I convey my deepest condolences to the members of the bereaved family. It is our prayer that God grant you peace, grace and strength at this time of bereavement. charge without rendering the service, the society has called upon the concern authority to look into the matter at the earliest and also to markdown the bills for those unattended services. The society also maintained that the basic amenities in the office are not satisfactory and are questionable. There is lack of proper Infrastructures (tables, chairs, Lockers etc), inadequate stationeries, no computers, insufficient stocks (pipes, sockets, joints etc) and absence of maintenance fund, it alleged. Perceiving the existing demeanor and inadequate amenities in the department, the Kalos Society questioned how the administration, public leaders and other NGOs remained silent when the basic necessity has been missing. It would be desirable and applauding on the part of concern authority to retrospect and reflect the undue hardships faced by common people at this juncture, the society added. The society also cautioned that the regular trend of ineffective operation would eventually lead to public outrage and that the authority concern would be solely responsible for it.

New Delhi, Jun 30 (IANS): Gujarat and Delhi are India’s most investmentfriendly states. Bihar and Jharkhand are the worst. Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu are the most corrupt states for doing business. West Bengal is the most difficult for land acquisition, environmental clearances and approvals. These are the findings of the recent “The NCAER State Investment Potential Index”, released by the National Council for Applied Economic Research (NCAER), which evolved an index to grade states on five main issues: Labour, infrastructure, economic climate, political stability and governance, and perceptions of a good business climate. The report contains two types of rankings: First, N-SIPI 21, an index that ranks 21 states on the five issues, including through industry surveys; second, N-SIPI 30 which includes all states including nine not covered by industry surveys - and are based on four issues, excluding perception. The data reveals that Gujarat tops the N-SIPI 21

This is also the first time that customers in these towns will have access to 3G mobile services. Airtel is the largest mobile services provider in Arunachal Pradesh and offers 2G, 3G and 4G services to customers. Airtel was also the first operator to launch 3G in the state and is the only operator that offers 4G in Arunachal Pradesh. Airtel has connected important towns like Bomdilla, Naharlagun, Daporijo, Itanagar, Tawang and Zero with superfast 4G. Sameer Anjaria, CEO, Airtel North East and Assam said, “We are committed to building telecom infrastructure across Arunachal Pradesh and take our services deeper into the state. cent to Audi’s overall sales of 11,192 vehicles, he informed. Audi India was the first luxury car brand to open a showroom at Guwahati in North-East, besides having outlets in cities like Ranchi and Bhubaneswar in the eastern region apart from the metro city Kolkata. To fuel it sales across smaller locations, the company is currently taking its Audi Mobile Terminal (AMT) to mainly tier II and III cities across the country. Introduced in last year as a customer-focused initiative, the AMT is a fully functional mobile showroom designed to provide a full Audi experience to customers. “Creating better accessibility to the brand by increasing geographical penetration is one of the core pillars of our strategy and the AMT is a unique way of bringing the showroom at the customer’s doorstep. We had introduced AMT last year and received a fantastic response,” King said. This year the company will bring the AMT across 20 cities over the next six months, starting from Siliguri, he added.

Guwahati, Jun 30 (PTI): Luxury carmaker Audi India today said it is focusing more on tier II and III locations, including the North-East, to tap the growing appetite of customers for premium vehicles. “Luxury enthusiasts in smaller cities are the ones who are converting into customers... as they are the ones with big pockets. “North-Eastern (region in) India is a focus area for us and we are looking forward to welcome new members to the Audi family from the region,” Audi India Head Joe King told PTI. Although the base is smaller, our sales in Tier II and III cities are growing at around 30 per cent, while it is less than 10 per cent in metros, he added. “Tier II and III cities have grown consistently for us and also across the product range. As part of Audi’s long-term strategy to fuel growth in India, we are setting up service centres at places where we do not have a showroom but already have a lot of customers,” King said. Last year, tier II and III cities contributed nearly 20 per

New Delhi, Jun 30 (IANS): Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Raghuram Rajan met Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Thursday, following the government this week notifying the rules for setting up the RBI’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) to decide on interest rates. The meeting comes a day after the Union cabinet approved the 7th Pay Commission recommendations for central government employees, the “recurring burden” of which on central government finances this year, including for arrears payment, was estimated by Jaitley on Wednesday at Rs 84,933 crore. “The Finance Ministry and RBI keep talking all the time,” Rajan told reporters after the meeting here. To a query on whether the structure of the MPC would be put in place before the next bi-monthly monetary policy review slated for early August, Rajan said, “I think we are putting out the structure. Let’s see how far it goes.” According to the ministry, apart from the rules for constituting the Monetary Policy Committee, “factors constituting failure to meet inflation target under the MPC Framework have also been notified on June 27, 2016”. The inflation target will be decided in consultation with the RBI and notified in the official gazette. The interest rates would be set up with the aim of achieving the inflation target, to be determined by the government. Under the current system, the RBI governor has the veto over the existing advisory committee, composed of RBI members and outside appointees, that decides on policy rates. The governor consults a Technical Advisory Committee, but does not necessarily go by the majority opinion while deciding on the monetary policy.

ments for India would be the Bank’s largest financing of solar for any country till date. The central government and the Bank have also signed an agreement for the USD 625 million Grid Connected Rooftop Solar Programme, which will finance at least 400 mw of solar photovoltaic (PV) installations. “The development of a USD200 million Shared Infrastructure for Solar Parks Project under a public-private partnership model is also under preparation,” the statement said. The International Finance Corporation (IFC), World Bank’s private sector arm, was one of the earliest financiers of wind and solar projects in India. It is supporting Madhya Pradesh to set up a 750-mw Rewa ultra-mega solar power project, billed as the largest single-site solar unit in the world. “India’s plans to virtually triple the share of renewable energy by 2030 will both transform the country’s energy supply and have farreaching global implications in the fight against climate change,” said Kim. “The World Bank Group will do all it can to help India meet its ambitious targets, especially around scaling up solar energy.”

The latest data from Zurich-based SNB comes at a time when Switzerland has begun sharing foreign client details on evidence of wrongdoing provided by India and other countries. It has agreed to further expand its cooperation on India’s fight against black money and expects to sign a new pact for automatic information exchange 2018 onwards. Besides, a team of Indian officials are expected to visit Switzerland soon to expedite the pending information requests about suspected illicit accounts of Indians in Swiss banks. The funds, described by SNB as ‘liabilities’ of Swiss banks or ‘amounts due to’ their clients, are the official figures disclosed by the Swiss authorities and do not indicate to the quantum of the much-debated alleged black money held by Indians in the safe havens of Switzerland. SNB’s official figures also do not include the money that Indians or others might have in Swiss banks in the names of entities from different countries.
London, Jun 30 (PTI): Multi-lateral lender World Bank today announced funding support of USD 1 billion for expansion of solar power capacity in India. It also signed an agreement with the International Solar Alliance (ISA), consisting of 121 countries led by India, to collaborate on increasing solar energy use across the world, with a goal of mobilising USD 1 trillion in investments by 2030. The pact, which was signed in the presence of Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Power Minister Piyush Goyal and visiting World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim, establishes the multilateral lending agency as the financial partner for ISA. The World Bank also announced that it plans to provide more than USD 1 billion to support India’s ambitious solar initiatives through investments in generation, a World Bank statement said. The World Bank-supported projects in the works include solar rooftop technology, infrastructure for solar parks, bringing innovative solar and hybrid technologies to market, and transmission lines for solarrich states. At the end of 2015, the total funds held in Swiss banks by Indians directly stood at CHF 1,206.71 million (down from CHF 1,776 million a year ago), while the money held through ‘fiduciaries’ or wealth managers was down at CHF 10.89 million (from CHF 37.92 million at 2014-end). The total stood at CHF 1,814 million at the end of 2014. This is the lowest-ever level of funds held through fiduciaries, which used to be in billions till 2007 but has been falling amid fears of regulatory crackdown. The total “amounts due to customers’ savings and deposit accounts” fell to CHF 425.8 million (from 1,378 million a year ago), while the money held through other banks incidentally more than doubled to CHF 270.4 million (from CHF 100.6 million). The ‘other liabilities’ of Swiss banks towards Indian clients, which include funds held through securities etc, rose from CHF 297 million to CHF 510.4 million.

Zurich, Jun 30 (PTI): Money held by Indians in Swiss banks has fallen by nearly one-third to a record low of 1.2 billion franc (about Rs 8,392 crore) amid a continuing global clampdown on the famed secrecy wall of Switzerland’s banking system. The funds held by Indians with banks in Switzerland fell by CHF 596.42 million to CHF 1,217.6 million at the end of 2015, as per the latest data released today by the country’s central banking authority SNB (Swiss National Bank). This is the lowest amount of funds held by Indians in the Swiss banks ever since the Alpine nation began making the data public in 1997 and marks the second straight year of decline. The funds held by Indians with Swiss banks stood at a record high of CHF 6.5 billion (Rs 23,000 crore) at 2006-end. 13 detained over Istanbul airport attack
The mother (centre) of air hostess Gulsen Bahadir killed in Tuesday night’s attacks cries during her funeral in Istanbul on Wednesday ISTANBUL, JUN 30 (AFP): Turkey today detained 13 suspected Islamic State jihadists over the deadly Istanbul airport attack, as chilling details emerged of how suicide bombers launched their assault. The death toll from Tuesday’s gun and suicide bomb spree at Ataturk airport has risen to 42, state-run news agency Anadolu said, with 13 foreigners among the dead and more than 200 people injured. Turkey has been plunged into mourning over the carnage at Ataturk airport, the deadliest yet of several attacks to strike Turkey’s biggest city this year. Police carried out 16 raids across Istanbul early Thursday, an official said, with three foreign nationals among the “IS
suspects” detained. “It is probable that at least one attacker was a foreign national,” he added, speaking on condition of anonymity. Turkey has suffered a string of deadly attacks in the past year blamed on either IS or Kurdish rebels, and the airport attack comes just at the start of the crucial summer tourist season. Interior Minister Efkan Ala told reporters late Wednesday there was an ongoing “serious and comprehensive investigation” into who was behind the attack. Using another name for IS, he said: “First signs point to Daesh, but it’s not certain yet.” CIA director John Brennan said the attack, which has sparked
India, Pak must decide pace, scope of dialogue on Kashmir: US WASHINGTON, JUN 30 (PTI): Asserting that India and Pakistan must engage in “direct dialogue” to reduce tensions, the US has said it is for the two countries to determine the pace, scope and character of talks on the Kashmir issue. “The normalisation of relations between Pakistan and India is vital to both countries and the region,” State Department Deputy Spokesman Mark Toner said. “Steps that initiate closer regional economic ties can also create jobs, lower inflation and increase energy supply,” he said Wednesday. The spokesperson made the remarks while responding to questions on the statement by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif ’s
Adviser on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz that India is shying away from talks on Kashmir and other bilateral issues. “We believe that the pace, scope, and character of dialogue on Kashmir is for India and Pakistan to determine,” Toner said. “However, India and Pakistan stand to benefit from practical cooperation and we encourage India and Pakistan to engage in direct dialogue aimed at reducing tensions,” he said. “The United States strongly supports all efforts between India and Pakistan that can contribute to a more stable, democratic, and prosperous region, but this is an issue that must be determined by the two sides,” Toner said.
international condemnation, bore the “hallmark” of the jihadist group. Details are emerging of how the attackers arrived at Turkey’s busiest airport by taxi before indiscriminately firing at passengers with automatic rifles and detonating suicide bombs. “The terrorists failed to pass through the regular security system, scanners and police control,” Prime Minister Binali Yildirim told reporters late Wednesday. “They returned and came back with long-range rifles they took out from their suitcases, and passed the security control by opening fire randomly at people,” he said. “One of them blew himself up outside and the other two took advantage of the panic during the opening of the fire, entered inside and blew themselves up.” A senior source close to the presidency gave a slightly different version of events, saying two attackers blew themselves up on separate floors of the airport before the third followed suit outside. CCTV footage widelycirculated on social media showed a huge ball of flame erupting at the entrance, scattering terrified passengers. Another video showed a blackclad attacker running inside the building before collapsing to the ground – apparently felled by a police bullet -- and blowing himself up.

Lanka to return military-held land seized from Tamil civilians COLOMBO, JUN 30 (PTI): Sri Lanka will return by 2018 all military-held land seized from Tamil civilians during the nearly three decades long civil war with the LTTE, Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera said Thursday. “Last week the military released 701 acres of land to the District Secretary of Jaffna, out of which, 201.3 acres were handed over to their original owners on June 25,” Samaraweera said while addressing the 32nd UN Human Rights Council sessions in Geneva. All military-held lands owned by Tamil civilians will be handed back by 2018, he said. “The Government has clearly instructed the military that all the land obtained from civilians must be released latest by 2018, and that the owners of whatever land that may be required for national installations or development purposes would be fully compensated,” he said. Samaraweera also assured a fair trial for victims of rights abuses. “I can assure you that the mechanism that is finally set up will be one which has the confidence of the stakeholders, especially the victims, with fair trial and due process guarantees,” Samaraweera said. Reconciliation does not happen at once, overnight. It requires effort, hard work, commitment, and careful, continuous, concrete action. It is not an end that can be reached where no further work is required, he added. Samaraweera said his government was dealing with
the serious and controversial issue of setting up a judicial mechanism with international assistance. “Sri Lanka is no stranger to international assistance and participation with many investigative and forensic experts having worked with us in the past. Of course, there are varying views on the nature, level and role of international participation,” he said. Both President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe have publicly declined to have foreign participation in then accountability mechanism. Samaraweera said Sri Lanka was committed to implement the co-sponsored resolution of 2015 to protect the dignity of State, People and Security Forces, we will implement the proposals with patience, discipline and restraint. The Sri Lankan Foreign Minister refuted the allegation of slowness in the process of accountability. The Government recognises that, in order for the transitional justice process to be effective in achieving the desired objectives, the necessary mechanisms should be properly sequenced, integrated and coordinated, he said. Several confidence-building-measures such as the release of Tamils-owned lands, lifting of travel restrictions to the North and de-escalating the military presence have been taken since January as part of efforts to ensure reconciliation after three decades of civil war with the LTTE that claimed more than 100,000 lives.
LONDON, JUN 30 (AGENCIES): The bizarre roller coaster of post-Brexit United Kingdom politics took another twist on Thursday as Boris Johnson, the favorite to succeed Prime Minister David Cameron, announced that he won’t run for the position after all. Johnson — the former London mayor whose populist appeal, Brexit support, and imperviousness to gaffes (not to mention physical resemblance) have drawn comparisons to Donald Trump — seemed like the politician best poised to benefit from the United Kingdom’s decision to leave the European Union. Cameron, who had supported staying in the UK, resigned after the vote, and Johnson was a popular member of Cameron’s party who helped lead the campaign to leave. Johnson was usurped by a former ally, Michael Gove, the UK’s justice minister, who worked closely with him on the “Leave” campaign. Gove’s announcement was a surprise: He’d been expected to support Johnson and play a key role in his administration. But Gove’s wife, a Daily Mail columnist, leaked an email to the public in which she advised Gove not to support Johnson without getting specific promises from him. Gove announced Thursday that he’d run for prime minister and immediately began siphoning away Johnson’s support. Another Conservative, Theresa May, who oversees crime and immigration policy as Home secretary, was poll-
Suicide bomber kills at least 30 cops in Kabul KABUL, JUN 30 (AGENCIES): At least 30 policemen are feared dead after a Taliban suicide bomber attacked a police convoy outside Kabul on Thursday, reported the BBC. The exact death toll has not been confirmed as conflicting details are available from different media houses. Sediq Sediqqi, interior ministry spokesman, told AFP, “There were two explosions that targeted the police cadets vehicles on the outskirts of Kabul city.” Paghman District Governor Haji Mohammad Musa Khan said many more have been injured in the attack, the BBC reported. According to the BBC report, cadets and civilians were returning

from a ceremony in Kabul’s western outskirts. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack in an email sent to AFP by spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid. Mujahid said that the
attack was the work of two suicide bombers. The first, on foot, targeted the bus carrying the trainee policemen and their instructors. Then a suicide car bomber attacked 20 minutes later, when police-
men had arrived at the scene to help, according to Mujahid’s account. The Taliban have been waging an insurgency against the government since being ousted from power by a US-led coalition in 2001.

Labour party is not in better shape
You might think the Labour Party, the major opposition party to the Conservatives, would be poised to take advantage of the party’s post-Brexit disarray. You would be wrong: Labour has been undergoing some serious drama of its own and is in the middle of a leadership crisis. Jeremy Corbyn, the Labour leader whose support for remaining in the EU was halfhearted at best, is refusing to resign from party leadership despite losing a vote of no confidence by a landslide. The majority of his shadow Cabinet — the people who would lead various government departments if Labour won a majority in Parliament — has resigned. Cameron himself urged Corbyn to step down, saying, “It might be in my party’s interest for him to sit there. It’s not in the national interest and I would say, for heaven’s sake man, go.”

He did his primary schooling from American Mission School Chishilimi village, High School from Govt. High School Kohima and graduated from St. Anthony’s College Shillong in 1958. He married Mrs. Khulu Chishi Swu and they have five sons and one daughter. Isak Chishi Swu embarked on his role as a leader of the Naga National Movement in 1959. He played an unwavering role in the Naga Independence movement with full commitment and dedication. An iconic figure of the Naga National Movement in the national and international forum, yet he remained rooted to his cherished native place, his people and home. May he rest in deep peace.
The citizens of Mangmetong Village are deeply saddened by the news of the death of our great national leader Isak Chishi Swu the president of NSCN IM at Delhi on 28th June 2016. It is regretfully mourned with great pain that when the bell of a negotiated settlement of the long fought battle of our Naga political deliverance from India is just seemingly ringing in its threshold after fighting and sacrificing his entirely everything, he had rather gone to another divinely prepared kingdom and not here to see it and celebrate with us. However we continue to repose our hope and trust to the succeeding national patriots. who would vigorously pursue the unfulfilled task and cherished dream of our departed leader and till the destiny of the supreme cause of our nation is achieved. We share our profound grief and condoles his death to both the relatives and the comrades that our leader had left behind. Claiming it as yet another incident of ‘Hollywood whitewashing’, the petitioners accused the makers of racism for not giving Muslim actors positive roles. “Casting Leonardo DiCaprio as Rumi rewrites history, takes possession of Muslim accomplishments and gives the credit to a white man,” said Valerie Janovic, a person who began the petition. The controversy began when screenwriter David Franzoni and producer Stephen Joel Brown revealed their casting plans, in an interview with The Guardian, which ultimately turned out to be their ‘dream casting’. DiCaprio’s next is yet unconfirmed. But he’s producing Ben Affleck’s next directorial venture Live By Night and a horror-thriller Delirium. K

Ryan Giggs
L OND ON , J u n 3 0 (Agencies): Ryan Giggs is set to call time on his Manchester United career after 29 years. T h e We l s h m a n h a s rejected the offer of a reduced coaching role under new manager Jose Mourinho, believing United have gone back on an agreement to give him the top job after he served under David Moyes and Louis van Gaal. Giggs’s representatives are now in negotiations with United over a pay-off for the final year of his contract. The 42-year-old will start a brief role as an ITV pundit at Euro 2016 but wants to move into club management. Giggs made a club-record 963 appearances for United after joining the club on his 14th birthday in 1987, and went on to win the Champions League twice, 13 Premier League titles and the FA Cup four times.
It is believed that Giggs has yet to speak directly with Mourinho, who starts work at Carrington with his backroom team on Monday, and a lastditch attempt to keep the United legend at his only professional club cannot be ruled out. But Giggs appears to have made up his mind to go after growing disillusioned by how the club has been run in recent years. He accepts that it will be seen as a gamble, but even prominent figures at United are said to have advised him to leave Old Trafford and further his ambitions elsewhere. T h e f o r m e r Wa l e s midfielder feels the club have gone back on an agreement to give him the manager’s job after he served on the coaching staff under David Moyes and Louis van Gaal. When United agreed to let Mourinho bring in his own team, including trusted No 2 Rui Faria, Giggs was offered a lesser role aimed at bridging the
gap between the senior squad and academy following talks with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward. He was also given the opportunity to suggest other positions he could fill within the club but told that a firstteam role was no longer one of the options. The surprising lack of contact with Mourinho also suggests there is little appetite on the new manager’s behalf to keep a fans’ favourite who made a club record 963 appearances for United. Giggs joined the club on his 14th birthday in 1987 and went on to win the Champions League twice, 13 Premier League titles and the FA Cup four times. Giggs spent a fortnight in Dubai last month considering his future and has kept a low profile since then. However, his decision to work for ITV in France is an indication that he is ready to put himself forward for new opportunities and he is not expected to be at Carrington on Monday morning when Mourinho and his staff arrive. Although Mourinho and his staff officially take over then, the Portuguese coach has been active for some time lining up transfer targets. United have already signed defender Eric Bailly for £30million, with free agent Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Borussia Dortmund midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan expected to follow in the next two weeks as Mourinho sets about rebuilding the squad.

Luiz Felipe Scolari
London, Jun 30 (Agencies): Former Chelsea boss Luiz Felipe Scolari has thrown his hat in the ring to become the next England boss - a decade after turning the job down. ‘Big Phil’ won the World Cup with Brazil in 2002 and guided them to the semi-finals in 2014, where they lost 7-1 to Germany. The 67-year-old, currently coaching Guangzhou Evergrande in China, was approached by the Football Association in 2006 to replace
Sven Goran Eriksson, but he turned it down, citing media intrusion. G a r e t h S o u t h g a t e, Claudio Ranieri, Arsene Wenger and Jurgen Klinsmann are all potential candidates to replace Roy Hodgson, who stepped down after four years in the job following England’s embarrassing exit from Euro 2016 at the hands of Iceland. It is understood that Southgate is open to an approach for a temporary role from the FA, but Scolari is keen on being the new fulltime boss. “I am the manager of Guangzhou and I am concentrating on my job here. But I know the importance of the England job in world football,” he told the Daily Mail. “I’ve an affection for English football and I am aware of the need for the national team to be successful. I understand the importance of an international manager from my time with Brazil and Portugal.”

was because he wanted to see his team home, he said, and not because he was six runs short of setting a new England record. “What a day. Incredible win for the boys,” Roy said. “It’s just a shame I wasn’t there in the end. I was pretty disappointed.” It was also England’s second-highest successful run chase in ODIs. “Unfor tunately the bowling didn’t work,” Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews said. England’s easy victory came after Sri Lanka had provided its best batting performance of the series, with Danushka Gunathilaka, Kusal Mendis, Dinesh Chandimal and Mathews all making halfcenturies after the Sri Lankans were put in to bat. Mendis top-scored with 77 and Mathews was 67 not out. Mendis and Chandimal put together a 128-run partnership for the second wicket to get Sri Lanka out of early trouble at 8-1 when Kusal Perera was run out. England started in the same vein. Moeen Ali, promoted to opener after Alex Hales hurt his back while fielding, fell for 2 at the start of England’s chase. Joe Root joined Roy and made 65 in their 149-run stand for the second wicket. Wales, Belgium vie for golden ticket
Wales' Gareth Bale, second left , jokes with Joe Ledley during the training session in Dinard, western France on Thursday. (AP/PTI) LILLE, Jun 30 (Agencies): History awaits the victors as Wales talisman Gareth Bale and rejuvenated Belgium star Eden Hazard lead their respective golden generations into battle in Friday’s Euro 2016 quarter-final in Lille. Belgium, second in the FIFA ranking, are desperate to make good on their squad’s vast potential and reach a first major semi-final since the 1986 World Cup. Wales are riding high in their first major tournament in 58 years and having outlasted British rivals England and Northern Ireland, their confi-
dence is at an all-time high. After hitting the heights in a 3-0 win over Russia in their final Group B game, Chris Coleman’s Wales had to dig deep to see off Northern Ireland in the last 16. An attritional match was settled in the 75th minute when Bale’s cross was turned in by Gareth McAuley for an own goal, but Friday’s game could be a more open encounter. Beaten 2-0 by Italy in their first match, Marc Wilmots’s Belgium have since grown in stature, beating the Republic of Ireland and Swe-
Novak Djokovic calls for football-style Davis Cup LONDON, Jun 30 (Agencies): World number one Novak Djokovic on Wednesday called for a football-style Davis Cup to help keep the 116-yearold tournament alive. Djokovic inspired Serbia to its only Davis Cup triumph in 2010 but has, in common with many other top players, carefully selected which ties he will honour in a packed tour schedule. The 29-year-old is due to play in the quarter-final against Andy Murray’s Great Britain in Belgrade from July 15-17 in the week after Wimbledon. “I definitely stand for a change of format of the Davis Cup,” said 12-time Grand Slam title winner Djokovic. “The format, as it is, doesn’t work anymore.” Djokovic wants the International Tennis Federation to rethink the schedule. He pointed to the success of football where the World Cup and European championships are organised in group stages and played at one specific time of the year. “Create one event in one year or two years
that would be held over two weeks,” suggested the Serb. “Make four groups, winners of all groups go to playoffs. Create it really attractive, not just for us tennis players, but for fans, for media, for everybody, for sponsors.” Djokovic played in this year’s first round win over Kazakhstan, taking part in three of the five rubbers over the weekend. He has played 23 times since his 2004 debut but skipped the 2012 and 2014 seasons. “Throughout the whole year, it’s a big challenge because of the schedule. You have four rounds in the bestcase scenario of the World Group,” he added. “The best match in terms of schedule for a top player is the first one. Every match after that you need to play after either a Grand Slam or after a season finale. “I think we do need to create a radical change because if we continue having this kind of format, it’s not going to be good for players.”
den before crushing Hungary 4-0. The victory over Hungary was built around a man-of-thematch display from Hazard, who scored one goal and made another in one of his finest international performances. After a bleak season with Chelsea, the 25-year-old embodies Belgium’s hopes of improving on their quarter-final showing at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Hazard sustained a minor thigh problem against Hungary that kept him out of training for two days, but he will return to training on
Thursday and is expected to start against Wales. Like Hazard, Bale is the symbol of his team’s rise. He has already enjoyed success against Belgium, scoring the only goal of the teams’ qualifying encounter in Cardiff a year ago. It was a result that confirmed Wales’s arrival as a force, but Belgium defender Toby Alderweireld is confident his side will not meet the same fate again. Alderweireld will play in a reconfigured defence at Stade Pierre-Mauroy, with 21-year-old Manchester City centre-back Jason Denayer set to replace the suspended Thomas Vermaelen. Atletico Madrid winger Yannick Ferreira Carrasco could also come into the team in place of Dries Mertens after a goal-scoring cameo against Hungary. As Belgium are likely to adopt a higher line than Northern Ireland, Hal Robson-Kanu could return up front for Wales in place of the less mobile Sam Vokes. With average squad ages of 26.9 and 26 respectively, Wales and Belgium convene at a time when both groups of players are arriving at maturity. Belgium’s star-studded line-up makes them favourites, but Coleman believes the expectation that has clung to their players in recent years could give his side an advantage.

The 26-year-old then romped through the next two sets to seal an emphatic 7-6 (8-6) 6-4 6-1 success that secured a showdown with 17-time Grand Slam champion Federer. Evans had never previously won a match at the Championships but having beaten Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff in the first round he will now face Federer after the Swiss legend beat Evans’ great friend Marcus Willis on Centre Court. A year ago the British number four was ranked in the 700s but he came into the tournament in good form after reaching the third round in Nottingham last week and he has now matched that with a career-best showing at the All England Club. On this form, Federer is likely to find his second successive British opponent a much more challenging prospect. Evans, who reached the third round of US Open in 2013 while knocking out Kei Nishikori and Bernard
Evans is set to take on seven-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer in the third round. Tomic, served impressively and moved well to outplay Dolgopolov from the back of the court as well as coming to the net at the right moments. He quickly moved a double break ahead in the second set and, although he failed to serve it out initially, he made no mistake second time around. Evans then broke Dolgopolov twice to lead 3-0 in the third set and with Davis Cup captain Leon Smith in attendance, the British number four eased through the rest of the set for the loss of just one game and into a showdown with Federer.
Beck beats Watson
After almost three hours of play over three days, British number two Heather Watson was dumped out of Wimbledon 3-6, 6-0, 12-10 by Germany’s Annika Beck in the longest women’s match of the
tournament so far. Wa t s o n , w h o c a m e within two points of beating eventual champion Serena Williams in the third round last year, clawed her way back into the much delayed firstround clash after losing nine straight games in the second set and start of the third. The frustration showed as Watson, 24, earned a warning for repeatedly smashing her racket at the changeover after the evenly-matched pair traded breaks in the fourth and fifth games of the third set. Watson, world number 55, missed three match points with the score at 10-9 in the decider. Beck held her nerve to break Watson and hold her own serve, reaching the second round after two hours 52 minutes on court. Beck, ranked 43rd, will play Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus in the second round. Sasnovich beat French 31st seed Kristina Mladenovic.
