Oppn targets RSS-BJP

Congress Wednesday targeted RSS and BJP in Lok Sabha over attacks on some Dalit men in Gujarat for skinning a dead cow, saying the Hindutva organisation was working for

“Dalit-mukt Bharat” which was “sponsored” by BJP to polarise communities ahead of next year’s assembly polls there. The opposition party demanded constitution of a joint parliamentary committee to go into the incident but Home Minister Rajnath Singh strongly refuted its charges and cited figures to claim that cases of atrocities against Dalits have declined in the state since 2001 when Narendra Modi took over as chief minister, and commended the state government for its “swift and effective” action. K Suresh (Cong) raised the issue in Zero Hour during which Congress members remained in the Well during protesting against the incident. Referring to large-scale protests by Dalits following the incident and “emergency-like” situation in parts of the BJPruled state, he said they have lost faith in the government and attributed the violence to RSS and upper caste lobby, inviting protests from the treasury benches.

Gov asks govt to implement Lok Ayukta Bill DIMAPUR, JUL 20 (NPN): Nagaland Governor, P.B. Acharya has appealed to the state government to “immediately complete the formalities for enactment of the Lokayukta Bill in the state”. He said in order to redress the grievances of the citizens, the Administrative Reforms Commission, appointed by the Central Government in 1966, recommended the constitution of the institutions of Lokayukta. In the light of those recommendations, he said institutions of Lok Ayukta were established in various states of the country with jurisdiction to deal with complaints not only against elective public servants, but also against other categories of public servants defined in the Act. “It is a constitutional counter-check to corruption and non-performance”, he said.

Uproar in RS over ‘prostitute’ remark on Mayawati; BJP sacks UP vice president NEW DELHI, JUL 20 (AGENCIES): Dayashankar Singh, who called Mayawati “worse than a prostitute” triggering a massive political storm, was on Wednesday removed as the vice-president of the BJP in Uttar Pradesh. “Dayashankar Singh’s remarks are not acceptable, therefore we have removed him from all party posts,” BJP chief in Uttar Pradesh, Keshav Prasad Maurya, told news agency ANI. The cracking of the whip against the UP leader came after severe condemnation from a united opposition over the slur, while an embarrassed Finance Minister Arun Jaitley expressed regret and assured of action. “Even a prostitute fulfils her commitment to a man after she is paid. But Mayawati, such a big leader in UP, sells party tickets to anyone who pays her the highest amount.

Dayashankar Singh (File)

If someone gives her Rs one crore for a ticket, she will give it to the other person who is offering Rs 2 crores,” Singh had told reporters, repeatedly using the word “veshya” in Hindi. The remarks drew severe flak from members in the Rajya Sabha, including women MPs, with Deputy Chairperson PJ Kurien saying that the House wants the government to ensure that stringent action is taken against the BJP leader, as per law, for his “unforgivable”

comments. There was all-round condemnation of Singh for his remarks by MPs including Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad, DMK’s Kanimozhi, Congress’ Kumari Selja and Renuka Chowdhury, TK Rangarajan of the Left, and Satish Chandra Mishra of BSP. A visibly-agitated Mayawati herself tore through the BJP in her speech in the Rajya Sabha. “His (Singh’s) remarks apply for his sister and daughter and not for me. The whole country will not forgive BJP... The people will come on the streets,” she said. Mayawati demanded that BJP leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and chief Amit Shah should discuss the matter, expel Singh from the party and take action against him. The BSP has also decided to file a formal police complaint against the BJP leader.

In a press note, RH president Kenyuseng Tep said the decision to hold rally was taken at an executive meeting of Rengma Hoho and all its frontal organization on July 20. Reminding the state government of the contribution the Rengmas made in the field of Naga political and historical movement in the implementation of Nagaland state, the Hoho said, “We were also the signatories and were in the forefront when our Nagaland state was born. Like any other tribes the government

should honour our demand and grant Tseminyu District for the people of Rengmas.” Therefore, the Rengam Hoho has urged the government to respect and honour the political and historical rights by fulfilling the demand for a district. Meanwhile, the Hoho has requested all the frontal organizations, the constituent units of the Rengma Hoho, all political parties and individuals within Rengmas areas to attend the rally and extend support and solidarity to their just and rightful demand. Now, NRMSATA reacts to Review NSEE results, CM’s ‘co-terminus’ remark demands ENCSU DIMAPUR, JUL 20 (NPN): In response to the purported statement of the state chief minister that the employees under flagship programmes like RMSA and SSA were bound to be co-terminated along with the projects and schemes, the Nagaland RMSA Teachers’ Association (NRMSATA) batch 2013 on Wednesday maintained that that RMSA/ SSA 2013 were appointed as regular state employees by the directorate of school education and not by the concern missions. In a press release, NRMSATA president Thejazelie Tase and press secretary Mezhuzonuo Mepfhuo said RMSA 2013 teachers were in no way under any contract, saying it was mentioned neither in the advertisement dated December 9, 2011 nor in the appointment orders dated March 22, 2013. Unlike contract or ad hoc employees, the association said “RMSA 2013 has been appointed in the PB 9300-34800, grade pay of Rs.4200 and a deduction of 10 % towards NPS monthly”, which, it said was clearly written in their appoint-

ment orders issued by directorate of school education. Maintaining that all these clearly points towards the fact that they were regular employees of the state government, the association said the term ‘co-terminus’ hence “can never be applied to us”. It also stated that RMSA mission director and NRMSATA also attended May 16, 2016 at a meeting, as mentioned by NSSATA, where RMSA 2013 batch was also acknowledged as regular state employees by the government officials. Meanwhile, the association said it has taken note of the department of school education directive to all DEOs and SDEOs to immediately collect the bio-data of all graduate teachers and SSA graduate teachers (regular) who were appointed upto 2013 for compilation of seniority list. It said RMSA 2013 appointees, who were appointed along with the SSA 2013 graduate teachers, have not been mentioned in the directive. NRMSATA however expressed hope that it was “just a technical error.” (Cont’d on p-7)

DIMAPUR, JUL 20 (NPN): Asserting that it has found anomalies in the allocation of seats under backward tribes (BTs) reservation in the recent declared NSEE result, the Eastern Nagaland College Students’ Union (ENCSU) has sought an immediate review of the result. In a memorandum addressed to the director of technical education, the ENCSU chairman Longre Chang and joint secretary Nokchem Angth said that the department of technical education and the government have failed to implement the government policy on BT reservation in selecting the students from deprived areas. According to the government policy, ENCSU said 15% was reserved for the BTs of the Nagaland. It said the policy was to be implemented the BTs have to get seven seats out of 45 MBBS seats. However, it said the distribution of seats has never been fair citing 40% marks, adding that this year BTs were allocated only three seats. The union has therefore asked the government and the (Cont’d on p-7)

1.96 lakh new HIV infections in India in 2015 Washington, Jul 20 (PTI): About 1.96 lakh new HIV infections were reported in India last year, according to a new study which found that about 25 lakh people worldwide became newly infected in 2015, a number that has not changed in the past 10 years. The new Global Burden of Disease 2015 (GBD 2015), published in The Lancet HIV journal, found that about 28.81 lakh people in India were living with HIV. The study shows a slow pace of decline in new HIV infections worldwide, with a drop of just 0.7 per cent a year between 2005 and 2015 compared to the fall of 2.7 per cent a year between 1997 and 2005. Improvements and updates in GBD’s data sources and methodology indicate that the number of people living with HIV has been increasing steadily from 27.96 million in 2000 to 38.8 million in 2015. Annual deaths from HIV/AIDS have been declin-

ing at a steady pace from a peak of 1.8 million in 2005, to 1.2 million in 2015, partly due to the scale-up of antiretroviral therapy (ART). The proportion of people living with HIV on ART increased rapidly between 2005 and 2015, from 6.4 per cent to 38.6 per cent for men and from 3.3 per cent to 42.4 per cent for women. While the annual number of new infections has decreased since its peak at 3.3 million per year in 1997, it has stayed relatively constant at around an estimated 2.5 million a year worldwide for the past decade. “Although scale-up of antiretroviral therapy and measures to prevent motherto-child transmission have had a huge impact on saving lives, our new findings present a worrying picture of slow progress in reducing new HIV infections over the past 10 years”, said lead author Haidong Wang from the University

of Washington in the US. “Development assistance for HIV/AIDS is stagnating and health resources in many low-income countries are expected to plateau over the next 15 years,” said Christopher Murray, director of the the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington. “Therefore, a massive scale-up of efforts from governments and international agencies will be required to meet the estimated USD 36 billion needed every year to realise the goal of ending AIDS by 2030, along with better detection and treatment programmes and improving the affordability of antiretroviral drugs,” said Murray. The findings come from a comprehensive new analysis of HIV incidence, prevalence, deaths and coverage of antiretroviral therapy (ART) at the global, regional, and national level for 195 countries between 1980 and 2015. Ex-Arunachal Speaker moves SC for review of historic verdict NEW DELHI, JUL 20 (PTI): Former Arunachal Pradesh Assembly Speaker Nabam Rebia Wednesday moved the Supreme Court seeking review of a portion, dealing with the power of the Speaker, of the historic verdict of the Constitution Bench which had restored Congress government in the hill state. The move to seek review of the judgement coincides with the fresh attempt of nine rebel Uttarakhand Congress MLAs, including former Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna, pleading for a stay on their disqualification by the Speaker by relying on the Arunachal verdict. The Uttarakhand rebels, now BJP leaders, have filed a fresh plea in their pending appeal seeking a stay on the Speaker’s decision to disqualify

them and they have contended that the apex court has held that the Speaker, facing motion for removal, cannot disqualify lawmakers who are part of the motion. In the review plea, Rebia has challenged the findings recorded in para 175 of the judgement in which the power of Speaker under Article 179 (c) of the Constitution is discussed. Justice J S Khehar, in the verdict, had said, “We are satisfied, that the words ‘passed by a majority of all the then members of the Assembly’, would prohibit the Speaker from going ahead with disqualification proceedings under the Tenth Schedule, as the same would negate the effect of the words ‘all the then members’, after the disqualification of one or more MLAs from the House.

KCP’s strike hits normal life in Manipur

Correspondent

IMPHAL, Jul 20: Normal life was jeopardised in Manipur on Wednesday due to the 13-hour state-wide general strike call given by Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP), Poirei Meitei group) alleging irregularities in appointment and regularization of professors in Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS). The strike commenced from 5 a.m. ended peacefully at 6 p.m. No untoward incident was reported from any part of the state, police said. Apart from major market places in Imphal city, other markets in the outskirts, like Lamlong, Konung Mamang, Singjamei remained shut for the day. Banks, financial institutions, oil pumps, educational institutions and private undertaking establishments remained close for the day. The attendance in the government offices was thin. Some private vehicles were seen plying on the streets. However, passenger service vehicles, including inter-state and interdistrict buses were off the road for the day. The strike was also total and peaceful in other valley districts, while it has no impact in hill districts. Leaders of KCP alleged that director of JNIMS has failed to produce white paper in connection with the controversial appointment of two professors. The director-in-charge of JNIMS, instead of producing white paper produced ‘black paper’ over the regularization of two professors. K

Uneasy calm in Kashmir Valley; death toll rises to 43

Chief of Army Staff Gen Dalbir Singh reviews the security situation in Kashmir during his visit to the Srinagar based Chinar Corps on Wednesday. (PTI) hours after Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti met the editors who called on her here, assuring “independence of media”. Army Chief General Dalbir Singh, who is on a day-long visit to the Valley, reviewed the security situation in Kashmir and appealed to the people to maintain peace while calling for strict vigil along the Line of Control (LoC). Though the situation in the Valley remained by and large peaceful with no major untoward incident reported from anywhere since yesterday, 56-year-old Ghulam Mohammad Mir, who was injured in a firing incident at Hatmulla in Kupwara district of north

89 crore person-days generated under MGNREGA in first quarter NEW DELHI, JUL 20 (PTI): With change in implementation mode, the MGNREGA performance has improved substantially, as employment generated under it jumped by 60 per cent to record 89 crore person-days in the first quarter of this year. Under the MGNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act) scheme, the employment is demand-driven. Those who turn up for work are hired and paid on notified wage rate. In the April-June period of last year about 54 crore person-days of employment was generated under the MGNREGA which has jumped to 89 crore this year, Joint Secretary in Rural Development Ministry Aprajita Sarangi told PTI. “So far Rs 30,000 crore has been allocated to the states under this scheme which is almost 78 per cent of the total budget. While in the last year at the same time about Rs 20,000 crore was allocated,” she said. The government has tweaked its implementation strategy of MGNREGA and now the focus is more on asset creation, she added. To ensure that there are

no ghost assets being created, the geo-tagging of all the assets is being done. At the same time there was sharp rise in the number of field visits to assess the implementation of the scheme on ground level, Sarangi said. The official also mentioned that at the central level the rural development ministry is very minutely monitoring the scheme. “I think rural distress due to drought has also played a big role in the rise in working days under MGNREGA,” she said. The Centre has also announced the additional employment over and above 100 days per household to up to 150 days in notified drought affected districts in various states of the country.

Kashmir on July 15, succumbed to his injuries at SMHS hospital here, officials said. Hailing from Khumriyal village, the deceased was critically injured in the firing which also left a youth dead. Soon after his death, a group of people staged a peaceful demonstration outside the hospital against the killing. Kashmir Valley is on the boil since July 8 following the death of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani in an encounter in Kokernag district of south Kashmir. Reports of protest demonstrations and hoisting of black flags were also reported from various parts of the city

and elsewhere, coinciding with the “black day” which was observed in Pakistan today. However, police and paramilitary forces removed the flags and enforced strict restrictions in the curfew-bound areas of the Valley to maintain law and order. Normal life remained paralysed for the 12th day following the separatist sponsored strike and curfew which continued in the Valley. Following the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander, the separatists initially called for a three-day strike but extended it as civilian deaths mounted amid widespread clashes. The schools and colleges in the Valley continue to remain closed after the government extended the summer vacations till July 25. Shops, business establishments and petrol pumps also remained shut, while the Government offices and banks witnessed thin attendance. Mobile telephony and mobile internet services also remained shut. The united separatist camp, comprising of chairmen of both factions of Hurriyat Conference Syed Ali Shah Geelandi and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and JKLF chairman M Y Malik, had asked people to hoist black flags over all the residential houses, commercial establishments like shops and important landmarks and squares in the Valley today. They have also asked people to observe half-an-hour “blackout” from 8:30 pm by switching off all bulbs and lighting to highlight the “atrocities carried by Indian forces”.

Rahul appears to doze off in LS; BJP, BSP attack him NEW DELHI, JUL 20 (PTI): Rahul Gandhi appeared to have dozed off in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday during a discussion on attack on dalits in Gujarat, inviting barbs from BJP and BSP while Congress defended its vice president and suggested that he was checking his mobile. Congress also showed a photograph of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Lok Sabha from November last year to claim that it shows he was also sleeping in the House. Gandhi was caught on the Lok Sabha TV with his eyes closed and appeared to be catching forty winks when Home Minister Rajnath Singh was replying to a short discussion on the issue of attack by vigilantes on dalit youths who were skinning a dead cow in Una in Gir-Somnath district. Attacking the Congress leader, BJP said he was only interested in doing politics on dalit victims and not in their getting justice. “It shows that his heart is not on providing justice to dalit victims. He just wants to do politics. If he was really interested in ensuring justice, then he would not be sleeping,” Union Minister Thaavar Chand Gehlot said. Taking a dig, BSP chief Mayawati said it showed how serious Gandhi was about dalits. “This publicity is going on that the Congress vice president will go to the spot (in Gujarat) but he was sleeping when the issue was being debated in the House. It shows how serious he is about it,” she said. Putting up a strong defence, Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said it was an attempt to trivialise and debase an important issue with a “false” story.

Modi govt mistaking parliamentary majority, says Cong chief

NEW DELHI, JUL 20 (PTI): In a blistering attack on Narendra Modi government, Congress President Sonia Gandhi Wednesday accused it of destabilising institutions, polarising society and mistaking its parliamentary majority for a licence to impose its narrow ideology on people. Addressing the first meeting of Congress Parliamentary Party in the ongoing Monsoon session of Parliament, she also slammed it for “deception”, “glib marketing slogans” and snatching the rights of Dalits, Adivasis, specifically citing the Gujarat incident where four Dalits were beaten and humiliated publicly. She called the Gujarat case, “just one example of the social terror this government condones”. “In the last few months, we have witnessed how Modi Government’s project of destabilising institutions and polarising our society has played out with renewed vigour to the detriment of constitutional values. “Modi Government has mistaken its parliamentary majority for a licence to impose its ideology on our people. It seems to have forgotten that parliamentary majority can never be the reason to abandon the principles and practice of constitutionalism,” she said. Gandhi referred to the

our country’s stand on security and defence, departing radically from policies that have stood the test of time.” Gandhi said, “The opaqueness of Modi government in decision-making and brazen promotion of cronyism has cast a dark shadow on its integrity”. The Congress President also accused the government of practising deception, saying they are creating a “bubble” of achievement. “Deception is not new to this ruling party. They are skilled at ignoring facts, propagating false claims and orchestrating unsubstantiated charges against the opposition, especially the Congress. As they complete two years in office, they have sought to create a bubble of achievement. But what have they exactly achieved?” she said questioning the government’s record on job creation, exports and prices. Describing the government as a “good marketeer”, the Congress chief said, “We are presented with a government that is anchored in slick marketing events, glib marketing slogans, in repackaging, in embellishment, and exaggeration. A big hit

t was bound to happen and when it did, the Board of Control for Cricket in India(BCCI), literally went into a tailspin after the Supreme Court ordered sweeping changes and moved to effectively clip the wings of a handful of its regional affiliates and their ageing bosses. The court in its order on July 18, gave BCCI six months to implement the changes under the watch of a committee led by former Supreme Court chief justice R.M. Lodha that had recommended a shakeup of the country’s most powerful-and richest-sports body. Among the big changes, a bench comprising Chief Justice T.S. Thakur and justice Ibrahim Kalifullah also upheld the ‘one state, one vote’ formula recommended by the Lodha committee in its report. This means that states with more than one cricket association, as in the case of Gujarat (Saurashtra, Gujarat and Baroda) and Maharashtra (Mumbai, Maharashtra and Vidarbha), will have voting rights on a “rotational basis”-one at a time. The SC order also barred serving civil servants and ministers from being on BCCI’s board or that of their respective state associations. This could affect the likes of Himanta Biswa Sarma, the newly elected Assam Cricket Association chief, or even the Tripura Cricket Association, which has traditionally seen the state’s bureaucrats in charge. The SC also accepted a recommendation which stipulated that office-bearers of BCCI must not be over 70 years of age. This would also apply to state associations, ruling out several current members .The court also upheld the term-limit recommended by the committee. Each of the office-bearers, it proposed, would have a three-year term and could contest a maximum of three terms, with a mandatory cooling-off period after each term. The committee had also proposed that a nominee from the office of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) be made a part of BCCI’s managing committee. The BCCI is also embroiled in many controversies such as the IPL auction, the match fixing scam and alleged irregularities during the tenure of Lalit Modi. All these do indicate that the BCCI has been run like a business company where the might of money and clout of politicians drive the Board. The acceptance of the Lodha Committee report should strike at the roots of the powerful people who have kept the Board under their grip. The BCCI, reportedly among the richest of sporting bodies estimated to be having anywhere between Rs.three to five thousand crore. It is not just cricket but about a lot of big money, power and politics. Despite its awesome funds, BCCI continues to fight against paying income tax. BCCI had avoided taxes on its income, claiming exemption as a charitable organisation. Although the Income Tax Department withdrew this exemption in 2007-08, BCCI only paid tax amounting to Rs.41.9 crore (US$6.2 million) against its tax liability of Rs. 413 crore (US$61 million) in the 2009-10 financial year. The Supreme Court order has surely spelt the end of the handful of powerful moghuls who have held sway over the business affairs of BCCI and hopefully, Indian cricket will re-emerge from the shadows of intrigues and free from the clutches of the rich and mighty who have hijacked the game.

Dependent on God’s Presence

Those who wait on the Lord…shall walk and not faint. —Isaiah 40:31 There is no thrill for us in walking, yet it is the test for all of our steady and enduring qualities. To “walk and not faint” is the highest stretch possible as a measure of strength. The word walk is used in the Bible to express the character of a person— “…John…looking at Jesus as He walked…said, ‘Behold the Lamb of God!’ ” (John 1:35-36). There is nothing abstract or obscure in the Bible; everything is vivid and real. God does not say, “Be spiritual,” but He says, “Walk before Me…” (Genesis 17:1). When we are in an unhealthy condition either physically or emotionally, we always look for thrills in life. In our physical life this leads to our efforts to counterfeit the work of the Holy Spirit; in our emotional life it leads to obsessions and to the destruction of our morality; and in our spiritual life, if we insist on pursuing only thrills, on mounting up “with wings like eagles” (Isaiah 40:31), it will result in the destruction of our spirituality. Having the reality of God’s presence is not dependent on our being in a particular circumstance or place, but is only dependent on our determination to keep the Lord before us continually. Our problems arise when we refuse to place our trust in the reality of His presence. The experience the psalmist speaks of— “We will not fear, even though…” (Psalm 46:2)— will be ours once we are grounded on the truth of the reality of God’s presence, not just a simple awareness of it, but an understanding of the reality of it. Then we will exclaim, “He has been here all the time!” At critical moments in our lives it is necessary to ask God for guidance, but it should be unnecessary to be constantly saying, “Oh, Lord, direct me in this, and in that.” Of course He will, and in fact, He is doing it already! If our everyday decisions are not according to His will, He will press through them, bringing restraint to our spirit. Then we must be quiet and wait for the direction of His presence.

here is a vast difference between perception and evidence. When Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi says that the RSS is responsible for the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, he is conveying the general perception. In fact, the then Home Minister Sardar Patel imposed a ban on the RSS which he withdrew when the organization gave in writing that it was only a cultural outfit. However, the perception has remained till today. The BJP, which is said to be a political wing of the RSS, has always denied the charge. But there is no clinching evidence either with the BJP elements or those opposed to it. The Congress which is in the forefront of those who say that the Mahatma was assassinated has not placed before the public that it was not a victim of any conspiracy either. When the party was in power at the Centre— they ruled for more than 50 years—it could have published the intelligence reports or some other documents to suggest that the assassination

was the doing of the RSS. Nor did the BJP, when it was in power, could release anything which would remove the charge once and for all. What Rahul Gandhi has said was the perception prevailing throughout the country and abroad even today. At that time the RSS elements were on the defensive and generally preferred to keep quiet. This only confirmed the perception that the Mahatma was killed by Nathuram Godse, a fanatic Hindu. I was working with an Urdu newspaper, Anjaam, then. We were all sitting at the office when the PTI teleprinter machine’s bell alerted for a flash. We rushed to the machine and the cryptic message was: Gandhi shot at! I wasted no time and went straight to the Birla House on my scooter. My office was situated near Jamma Masjid and I rode through Darya Ganj area. The locality was calm and oblivious to the great tragedy. There was a wooden gate at Birla House and there was no security to stop any

The fact that the matter has been given to the party spokesman to handle shows that the Congress is already making preparations for diluting its stand. If it does so, the party would lose the face, more so Rahul Gandhi, who is being projected to lead the party in the next Lok Sabha elections. This is a tough case before the Supreme Court because it is going to be damned if its verdict goes either in favour of the Congress or the RSS. What saddens one is that the secular forces in the country are not marshalling their strength to face the biggest challenge to the idea of India, democratic and anti-communal. The struggle for independence was for the ethos of pluralism and egalitarianism. Once Gandhi was portrayed as a non-violent communist and he did not take any offence to the comment, although the commu-

nists had described him as a running dog of imperialism. The communists should make amends for their mistakes and hang the picture the Mahatma at their headquarters in Kolkata. My advice to the RSS and BJP is the same. Gandhi is an apostle of the marginalized and the backward. He represented the national struggle and India’s emancipation from the British. This is the point on which all the political parties meet and they should have no hesitation in collectively recognizing the fact that Gandhi rolled up the 150 years of foreign rule. As for the allegations of Rahul Gandhi, the Supreme Court has taken note of them. In the wake of the court hearing, many skeletons may tumble out of the closet. Now that the Congress vice-president has refused to apologize—one can only hope that he will stick to his statement—the fat is on fire and the public may see an ideological warfare in the court itself. Rahul Gandhi is either made or marred.

Post-mortem Practical Christianity Assu Isak Chishi Swu another Mahatma Gandhi

et us never prefix the title “Late” to Assu Isak Chishi Swu; he is an immortal-icon; most importantly now is with the Lord Jesus Christ, indeed more perfectly alive than before. D.L. Moody says, “Someday you will read in the papers that D.L. Moody of East Northfield is dead. But do not believe a word of it! At that moment I shall be more alive than I am now.” Alike Assu Isak Chishi Swu is. Assu Isak Chishi Swu had witnessed the atrocities of Indian army against his people. This had led him for Naga freedom and thus gave his total life for fighting for Naga freedom since 1959. He tirelessly had served for his beloved Naga people for 57 years against their oppressions. (Assu Isak Chishi Swu passed B.A. in 1959 and joined as the freedom fighter on that very year itself to till his last breath 2016 ie; 57 years he gave his life, everything for the Naga nation, not 52 years as mentioned often times in the daily local papers. This misinformation is giving clarification through reliable source). All through this span of years he depended on the living God and strived for non-violence and for an amicable settlement with the Government of India through political dialogues. Hon’ble Ato Kilonser Muivah says, “… through Swu’s unceasing faith in Jehovah that both India and Nagas realized the futility of hostility and resolved to settle Indo-Naga issue through political dialogues” (NP 3rd July front page). Further Th. Muivah attribute to Isak’s leadership by

saying, “this led to signing of the framework agreement” (NP 1st July front page). Nagas should not narrowly look Assu Isak Chishi Swu as mere a Sema. He was and is inseparable part of every tribe of Nagas, as he had invested sacrificially of all of his 57 years for the Nagas whom he loved so much and for their nation-hood. Mr. R.N. Ravi, who is well known of Naga history and has the role in interlocutor for Naga - India talks aptly illustrated that Isak Chishi Swu is the “Mahatma of Nagaland” (NP June 30 front page). I appreciate his accolade toward our ever Hero who is in Heaven now. Mahatma Gandhi gave his life for the Indians hence he was titled as the Father of the Nation. So also Assu Isak Chishi Swu, ever since came with his Bachelor in Arts degree in 1959 who as a young man had a great dreams to go to USA for his Theological studies, determined on that same year to suffer for his Naga people till his last breath given to the hand of the Lord Jesus on 28th June 2016. Hon’ble Ato Kilonser N. Kitovi Jimomi timely expressed his concerns by saying, “Naga displayed unity only in times of mourning. He wished that Nagas should come together as one for other purposes as well. He said the living should unite and be together” (NP 1 July front page). Nagas must have a positive thinking toward UNITY as through it alone we will achieve the long awaited solution. Agri-Expo became historically unique on the 1st July by having the funeral service of

Pride of the nation: Nagaland

I

n our 53 years of statehood there are many factors which makes me proud to be a part of our Nation: Nagaland: 1. I take pride in condition of our roads. The condition of our roads, are such that, I find it very difficult to explain to my children the differences between the river and the roads. 2. I take pride in stating that our non existence medical colleges and engineering colleges are at par with any other institutes in India. The level of Excellency of learning and teaching is such that even after 53 years of statehood our students have to go outside for further studies and our youngsters have to demand the Government to establish a mere Government law college. 3. I take pride in stating that our Government Hospitals and Health centre’s are so well equipped that except for Dysentery, headaches, and common flu our people have to go outside the state for treatment. 4. I take pride in stating that our horticultural and food grain production is able to feed the Nation: Nagaland for one whole month in a year, and for the rest eleven months we depend on other states of India. 5. I take pride in being the only state in India to have completed 100% electrification. Proud to state that all the villages and all remote areas have been electrified with burrowed hydro power from our neighboring states ASSAM and MEGHALAYA. If at all our neighbors refused to give us their hydro power we will be in complete darkness. 6. I take pride in stating that any official of high position in the society can be a symbol of corruption and commit any crime but be 100% sure that his tribesmen and clansmen will support him to the fullest, which encourages him to do more. 7. I take pride in the our NLPT act. Due to this act our state has become the wettest state and adulterated liquor is available in all the Pan shops, hotels and grocery shops. 8. I take pride in stating that despite all this our people keeps whining and complaining from the comfort of their kitchen; and some are great warriors in social media but never walks when required. Assu Isak Chishi Swu. His death brought many factions / rivals together on the same dais. The tributes of the top leaders of GPRN / NSCN, NNC, NSCN / GPRN (R) to the departed great Naga leader in unison, depicted that our UNITY is not far away. What made us thus far not to be bound together? Could it be the failure in yielding to one another – Giving and Taking? Could it be the absence of Christ likeness in us – Forgiving and Forgetting? NSCN(I-M) Kilo Kilonser Rh. Raising says, “we will uphold and abide” by the appeal made by NSCN (I-M) Yaruiwo (late) Isak Chishi Swu to all workers of different groups “to forgive our mistakes, as we have also forgiven their past mistakes.” (NP July 20 front page). Hon’ble Ato Kilonser Th. Muivah, his counterpart Hon’ble Ato Kilonser N. Kitovi Jimomi, and all the top leaders of the different factions have the same longing for Unity in order to accomplish our long waited cordial solution. At this juncture who will take up the role of ambassador of peace with selfless sacrifice and bring all the factions / NPGs together to usher freedom triumphantly upon the Nagas? FNR alone or who? Nagaland Hon’ble Chief Minister T.R. Zeliang says, “…the best tribute Nagas could pay to the (late) Chairman would be to unite and strive together to realize and fulfill his dreams” (NP 1 July front page). Rev. he teachings in the bible are miraculous. It is one old book anyone would say but it’s new every time we read it. God is not a subject meant for certain people to discuss. Any age group enjoy the wonderful works of God our father. Let us examine how God generously gave His only begotten child to save our life from the hands of evil. Jesus Christ who has the same power as God the almighty choose to suffer the worst of treatment so that you and I can be free and enjoy our life for the work He had already made perfected for us. The world suffers today because we refuse to love God genuinely with all our hearts. We are never punished for the sin committed but the sin itself punishes us. To live a happy and contented life God has given us the human manual which is called the ‘ Bible ‘ for us to read and carry out what it says about ‘how to live our lives’. Some people as Christians follow only those selected scriptures which are easy to follow but being a true Christian nothing of the word can be skipped or omitted. These kind of Christians cannot be trusted because they’ve failed in major areas in Christian life’s. While anyone is practicing the whole rules/ laws in the bible, is there any way/reason to doubt their Christianity? Failing Christians never succeed in anything. Anywhere and everywhere they put their hands to, brings failure because God the winner man has already gone before them. It is written He is omnipresent, omniscient and omnipotent. Also God can never be killed. Trying to cheat God can be the worst mistake anyone can think of. Even normal and namesake Christians cannot enter the kingdom of God unless we work out our own salvation. Let us not be confined Christians but learn to stretch ourselves everywhere so that anyone coming in contact with us taste the goodness of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. Let us see that we are not being a stumbling block to anyone. When one

is a true Christian he/she need not have trouble with anyone he/she come in contact with because the radiance of God glowing inside of him/her will automatically attract others towards them. They would rather be the persons sought after and ‘can’t live without’ kind of persons. Learning from the past mistakes and looking forward to bright future shall we learn to live in the present ? Because our life cannot be lived backward / forward nor will there be future if we ourselves perish in sin. God has meant for us to enjoy the portion He already has specified for each of us whether be it health, wealth , work load, resources , lifespan etc accordingly which is all for His good purpose and glory. Shall we run into the timetable of God and enjoy His will as His obedient children’s ? When we leave our plans and follow His plan, we can achieve even bigger and better goals than our finite minds could think of. Shall we learn to function as one body and start picking up our responsibilities which none else but you alone can do it because that very job is specifically designed and assigned for you to do it? When we start functioning together we will soon realize that we are only helping our own selves by carrying out our duties faithfully. That’s the miraculous work of God our father whose wisdom and understanding is endless. Let us be good listeners and learners, problem solvers and not problem creators, lighten each other’s burden, represent and speak for weak and poor, and finally be one who hear one good and bring out something even more better than what is heard. Forgetting not “ Nothing can defeat a praying public “. Let us stand together and show Jesus Christ living through us. Lastly, let this bible verse bless us all - Now let the fear of the Lord be upon you. Judge carefully, for with the Lord our God there is no injustice or partiality or bribery. 2 Chronicles 19 : 7. God bless all ! Avika Y. Chishi, Zunheboto

A story of left hand fingers: A reflection on Naga National Movement

O

nce upon a time, a golden ring was given to left hand to wear. The left hand was so pleased that it would beautify all the left hand fingers. However, in the process to collecting the golden ring, each finger started claiming that it should wear and did not want other fingers to wear it. The thumb claimed that it should wear it because it is the biggest among them. The indexfinger also claimed that it should wear it because it is the forefinger. The middle finger argued that it should wear it because it is the tallest among them. The ring finger claimed that it should wear it because it is the ring finger. The smallest finger also claimed to wear it because according to most Naga tradition, the youngest person inherits the house of the parents. They were so selfish and had less concern for the common welfare. Each finger attempted to collect it by itself, but everyone failed to get it, because it cannot put the golden ring on it by itself. One day, they realized that all of them belong to the same hand. They realized that it was foolish to fight against each other and waste time. So they decided that they would collect the golden ring together and put it on the ring finger. Accordingly, they collected it together and put it on the ring

finger. It beautified all of them and they rejoice together. The Nagas being of the same race have the same goal to attain the self-government. However, in the process of struggling to reinstate their independence, they got divided on ideological differences and perhaps also on leadership crisis. Gradually hatred and enmity crept into the Naga National Movement. Some years back the national workers fought among themselves and public were also divided in support of one group against the others. The Nagas need to realize like that of the fingers that they belong to the same race and have common objective to achieve. Thus they must openly come together and work together to attain their desired goal. It is important to understand that the Nagas by nature cannot live under the suppression and dominance of someone else. If one group tries to suppress the others, unwanted things may happen again. The Nagas have been witnessing it. It is also not appropriate to bark behind others. As a concern citizen, I would appeal that all the groups must come together and work together for the benefit of all so that everyone will be benefitted and rejoice together. Many Naga intellectuals have expressed that it would be wiser on the part of Govern-

ment of India to invite all the stockholders to negotiation table instead of declaring one group as terrorist. Declaring a Naga group as terrorist may not bring any solution. Rather it would aggravate the situation. Also declaring Nagaland State as disturbed area and imposing ASPA is making Nagas to recollect the past Indo-Naga conflict where innocent Nagas were harassed, tortured, killed and their women were merci-

lessly raped and their houses and granaries were burnt into ashes. It is only creating fearpsychosis hatred. The policy of repression may not be the best possible way and means to contain violence. The only possible way may be treating all the groups equally, fairly and amicably work together towards permanent Indo-Naga settlement. Yiepetso Wezah, Mission Colony, Pfutsero town

India engaging with China on NSG, will never sign NPT: Govt

NEW DELHI, JUL 20 (PTI): India on Wednesday said it is engaging with China to iron out differences after Beijing created “procedural hurdles” for its entry into Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) but made it clear that government will never ink Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Responding to supplementary during Question Hour in Lok Sabha, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said China had raised questions over how a nonNPT could become a member of NSG. “But we are engaging with it. We have not stopped efforts. If someone says ‘No’ for once, it does not mean he won’t agree at all...like GST... Congress friends are not allowing the GST to be passed. Four sessions have passed, all parties have agreed to it, it is being held up due to them (Congress). “That does not mean it will never agree (to the GST bill). It is possible that the bill is passed in this session,” she said. Asserting that India has a “clear cut” policy on NPT, she said government will “never sign NPT” but will continue to fulfil its commitments made when it got the waiver in 2008.

Sushma Swaraj

Her reply was made amid protests by the Opposition over attacks against Dalits in Gujarat, including sloganeering from the Well. The minister rejected suggestions that India had created a lot of “hype” ahead of the NSG meet in Seoul. “We have been taught to make serious efforts to achieve things...no hype was created when we submitted our application for the membership of NSG on May 12. We did it with low fanfare,” she said. Swaraj also scoffed at suggestions by Supriya Sule (NCP) that the denial of NSG membership to India was a ‘huge diplomatic snub’ as it came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Mexico and Switzerland. The Minister said Mexico supported India’s bid and when the decision

did not go in New Delhi’s favour, Mexico demanded an extraordinary meeting to make the plenary decide again on the issue. Asserting that Indian diplomacy has made its mark, she said earlier people used to ask whether India can make it to the NSG. “Now when India will become a member is the question being asked,” she said in the presence of the Prime Minister. On the benefits of getting NSG membership, Swaraj said India will then become part of rule making. “We are rule takers not rule makers,” she said recalling a 2011 decision of NSG not to transfer sensitive enrichment and reprocessing technology to non-NPT states. “ T h e d e c i s i o n wa s against us. Had we been inside (member), we would not have let this happen,” she said. She said waiver is like being allowed in the verandah. “Membership is like being in the room...being part of rule making,” Swaraj said. She also credited the previous UPA government for getting the waiver and said while the UPA government made the commitments, the present government is following the same since it came to power in 2014.

TTBPU urges DoP to rectify billing system DIMAPUR, JUL 20 (NPN): Expressing concern on the inconveniences caused to the believers and general public due to the existing electricity billing system, the Tuensang Town Baptist Pastors Union (TTBPU) has urged the department of power (DoP) to rectify the billing system. Under the system, the department was charging Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 15,000 on every Church, which was beyond the financial resources and beyond the consumption, said TTBPU secretary, Khumjong Sangtam in a press statement. Further, the union urged the chief engineer to consider minimum bill on all the Churches in the town, since electricity was not regular throughout the month and only

three regular worship services were conducted in a week within a limited timeframe. Meanwhile, TTBPU, comprising of majority of Naga Tribal Churches within Tuensang Town, at its emergency meeting held on July 19, 2016 had welcomed the shepherds’ from different Churches and resolved to support Tuensang Town All Ward Union (TTAWU) July 25, 2015 resolution. According to the TTBPU, the existing private agency systems in Tuensang town had led to rise in price of all essential commodities which had adversely affected thousands of families. In this regard, the union urged the concerned authorities to examine and consider the resolution of TTAWU to ban agency system.

7 Khandu wins floor test with 46 MLAs New high-tech museum at Rashtrapati Bhavan National/state

ITANAGAR, JUL 20 (PTI): Pema Khandu government in Arunachal Pradesh Wednesday won the floor test in the Assembly with 46 MLAs voting in favour of the chief minister and 11 members from opposition BJP voting against it. Gover nor Tathagata Roy hurriedly summoned the day-long session of the Assembly late last night asking Khandu to prove his majority on the floor of the House. When the House assembled in the morning with Deputy Speaker Tenzing Norbu Thongdok in the chair, Chief Minister Pema Khandu moved the motion ‘This house expresses its confidence in the council of ministers’ which was seconded by former Chief Minister Nabam Tuki. Forty-four Congress MLAs and two Independent members voted in favour of the government. Later addressing the members, Khandu appreciated them for reposing faith in his leadership and also thanked senior party leaders, including Tuki and Kalikho Pul. He said his prime duty was to bring equal development for all the communities of the state which was largest in the north-east region with 26 major tribes and over 100 sub-tribes. Asserting that he would work across party lines, Khandu said all members of the House would be given enough financial power so that they can concentrate on their respective constituencies for development to percolate. The Chief Minister, while appealing to members not to rake up issues of the past, said he would fix responsibilities on every minister of his Cabinet and those who fail to perform, would face action. “I will take all the MLAs together as ‘Team Arunachal’ to fulfil the aspirations of the people,” he announced, adding that his priority would be to complete all important schemes. Khandu was sworn in as the ninth Chief Minister on July 17 after months of politi-

cal turmoil in the state. In a dramatic tur naround in this land-locked state on July 16, Congress replaced Tuki by choosing Khandu as the new CLP leader, who staked claim to power on the basis of support of 45 party MLAs along with two Independents. In fast-changing developments, Khaliko Pul, rebel-turned chief minister, who was unseated by the Supreme Court, returned to the party fold with 30 dissident MLAs. Hours ahead of a scheduled floor test in the Assembly, which Tuki was directed by the governor to take, the Congress Legislature Party met and elected Pema, son of late chief minister Dorjee Khandu, as its new leader. Tuki proposed the name of Khandu while Chowna Mein, sworn in as Deputy Chief Minister, seconded it, which was unanimously accepted by 44 MLAs who were present. In the 60-member House with an effective strength of 58, Congress now claims the support of 47 MLAs, including two Independents, while opposition BJP has 11 members. Thondok elected as Arunachal Speaker Tenzing Norbu Thongdok was Wednesday unanimously elected as the 11th Speaker of the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly. Congress MLA Bamang Felix moved the motion for election of the Speaker which was seconded by his party colleague Pani Taram. The post had yesterday fallen vacant following the resignation of incumbent Speaker Nabam Rebia. President Pranab Mukherjee is greeted during the Presentation of State of Indian Universities in the Global Academic Rankings at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on Wednesday. (PTI) NE W DE LHI, JUL 20 (PTI): The history of the Rashtrapati Bhavan, from its construction to the lives of its occupants, will be on display in a high-tech storytelling museum which will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi next week when President Pranab Mukherjee completes four years as the Head of State. The inauguration of this second phase of museum complex in the 88-year-old Rashtrapati Bhavan marks the completion of the project spread in 10,000 square metres comprising Stables Mu-

seum (Phase –I inaugurated last year), Garages Museum (to be inaugurated this year) and the Clock Tower, which will be home to the visitors reception centre, cafeteria and souvenir shop. Modi will inaugurate the museum on July 25, in presence of President Mukherjee, Vice President Hamid Ansari and other dignitaries, President’s Press Secretary Venu Rajamony said. “This museum will depict the story of the planning and construction of Rashtrapati Bhavan; the British Viceroys who occupied the building till 1947;

their reaction towards the tumultuous freedom movement in the country; the transfer of power; the formation of the Republic; the life and work of 13 Presidents of India since 1950; life in Rashtrapati Bhavan; the beauty and environment of the campus, the people working here and important visitors, etc,” he said. The museum developed at the site of a heritage building, where the garage for Rashtrapati Bhavan vehicles was earlier located will also have an Art Gallery for holding exhibitions.

Now, NRMSATA reacts to CM’s ‘co-terminus’ remark (From p-1) The association has also sought to clarify that RMSA and SSA 2013 had applied for their respective post through an advertisement dated December 9, 2011 for recruitment of teachers, which gave no reference of RMSA or SSA. As such, it said RMSA and SSA 2013 teachers had gone through the same selection process and shared a common merit list, subject wise, and had the same date of appointment. “It was only during the time of posting that RMSA and SSA teachers were segregated,” it added.

Father of slain jawan alleges foul play Correspondent KOHIMA, JUL 20 (NPN): Father of slain Naga jawan, sepoy late Vezota Vasa, who allegedly committed suicide at Jat Regimental Centre in Bareilly (UP), has alleged foul play and sought justice for his son. Addressing a press conference at Kohima Press Club (KPC) here Wednesday evening, slain jawan’s father Vekhwutso Vasa shared “suspicious points” regarding his son’s death on June 23 at Bareilly. Vasa said Colonel Jeevan from JRC had informed him at around 7:50am on June 23 last that his son was no more. Immediately, he requested the officer not to conduct post-mortem till his arrival. On June 24, when the father and the family members arrived at around 11:15am and asked to see dead body they were denied. But when they insisted only forehead and half part of the chest was shown. Despite the request over phone, the Army had already conducted a post-mortem before they reached Bareilly. He also alleged that the family was not allowed to meet Sepoy Ajay Kumar, the first person to have seen the body of Vezota Vasa. According to Vekhwutso, the supervisor of investigating officer told him on July 19 that the case was about to be closed, but due to “top level pressure” including ADGP Nagaland, the case would be reopened. He was however told that FIR should be registered. In this connection, Vekhwutso said FIR was to be lodged with police station Bareilly through the ADGP. He also said the case was under investigation by investigating officer of Jat regiment. Vekhwutso informed that Naga Hoho has submitted a representation to the Prime Minister. The family had also met Nagaland governor, who assured to write to the defence ministry. Besides, he said that even the Western Chakhesang Hoho had written to the governor seeking his personal intervention into the matter.

MUMBAI, Jul 20 (PTI): Market advanced for a second day as the BSE Sensex gained 128.27 points to 27,915.89, mainly led by pharmaceutical stocks after three Indian firms received nod to sell their generic versions of blockbuster Crestor drug in the American market. Sentiment also remained buoyant as a good monsoon season so far lifted hopes of a revival in farm output as well as income and on optimism over the GST bill’s passage. Shares of Sun Pharma, Glenmark and Aurobindo were the star performers, rising by 1.89 per cent, 2.39 per cent and 5.09 per cent, respectively. IPR Pharmaceuticals Inc’s Crestor had posted annual sales of around USD 6.78 billion in the 12 months

In the recent biennial elections to the Rajya Sabha in June, the BJP-led NDA strength has gone up to 74 with five additional seats coming its way, while the Congress has lost three seats and its tally has gone down to 60. The government needs two-thirds majority in the Rajya Sabha to pass the Constitution amendment bill to roll out the GST. To muster 163 members in the 245-member house, the government will need support of all regional players, like the Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress, JD-U and others to vote to make it 163.

All these steps are part of the government’s larger drive to shrink petroleum subsidy and keep it targeted towards those who can’t afford to pay the market price for fuel. An oil price crash in the last two years has also aided the government effort to curb subsidy. NEW DELHI, Jul 20 (Agencies): The ambit of PM Narendra Modi’s pet scheme, Direct Benefits Transfer (DBT), will be doubled by March next year with the Centre now aiming to bring as many as 147 schemes under its purview from the 74 at present. A senior government official told ET that the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) is closely monitoring the ambitious target even as 71 out of the 84 central ministries and departments have now opened their internal DBT cells which have identified the said schemes to be transitioned to the DBT platform by March, 2017, reported TOI. The Prime Minister in the recent past has spoken about the Rs 28,000 cr savings through the DBT and the government expects that the savings figure could touch Rs 1 lakh cr with the scheme’s ambit being extended. Towards this end, all states were recently also told to open DBT cells. The Centre is enthused as almost all states, including many opposition states like Odisha, were appreciative of the DBT project at the recent interstate council meeting chaired by the PM. “West Bengal had a concern that lack of banks in rural areas would be a big challenge to DBT and Mamata Bannerjee complained of the stiff timelines saying it should be ensured that people should not be left out. France: All 84 killed in Nice truck attack are identified Paris, Jul 20 (AP): All 84 people killed in the Nice truck attack have now been formally identified, according to a top French official, who said today the death toll for the Bastille Day carnage has not increased despite several remaining in critical condition. Prosecutor’s office spokeswoman Agnes Thibault-Lecuivre said some of the 84 French and foreign nationals who lost their lives after last Thursday’s massacre died subsequently in the hospital. Authorities have not released an official list naming the dead from the July 14 Bastille Day rampage in the southern French city. In a speech to army re-

serves today, French President Francois Hollande said 15 people wounded in the Nice attack are still in the hospital “between life and death.” He praised the French emergency and security services’ work during and after the attack in which Mohamed Lahouaiyej Bouhlel, a troubled 31-yearold Tunisian, drove a truck down a seaside boulevard full of people who had watched a fireworks show. Officials say that five unnamed people remain in custody for possible links to the attack and two of them have had their detentions extended exceptionally beyond the 96hour deadline.

Bamako, Jul 20 (AFP): Seventeen soldiers were killed and 35 wounded in central Mali in an assault on their base that authorities called a “coordinated terrorist attack”. “The toll has increased: we have lost 17 men and 35 are wounded,” Mali’s defence minister Tieman Hubert Coulibaly said yesterday. Authorities had earlier announced that 12 soldiers were killed. Coulibaly called the assault a “coordinated terrorist attack on our positions,” but did not say who was responsible. The gunmen’s descent on the military camp in Nampala was earlier claimed by a group from the ethnic Peul community, calling themselves the National Alliance for the Protection of Peul Identity and Restoration of Justice (ANSIPRJ). The group said it had killed eight troops and wounded 11 more, as well as making off with two trucks and five pick-up trucks. “It was self-defence,” Sidy Cisse, a senior ANSIPRJ commander, told AFP, adding three of his men were wounded. Earlier Al-Akhbar, a Mauritanian news agency, reported that several soldiers had been taken hostage, and

Washington, Jul 20 (PTI): Hillary Clinton today asked American voters to make sure that her rival Donald Trump would never set his foot in the Oval Office of the White House, hours after the controversial billionaire was endorsed by the Republican party to be its presidential nominee. “Donald Trump just became the Republican nominee. Chip in now to make sure he never steps foot in the Oval Office,” Clinton, the Democratic party’s presumptive presidential candidate tweeted soon after the 70-year-old real estate mogul’s nomination at the Republican National Convention in Cleavland, Ohio. The Oval Office is the official office of the US President. It is located in the West Wing of the White House Complex. “If Donald Trump wants to make America great again, he should start by actually making things in America,” she said. The focus of the convention on the second day was supposed to be on the economy, but it was Clinton, the former secretary of state, who was in the spotlight. Meanwhile, Democrats will gather for their convention in Philadelphia from July 25 to 28 to nominate Clinton, as their candidate for the presidency.

Dhaka, Jul 20 (PTI): Five Islamist militants were today charged for the grisly murder of a 27-year-old secular Bangladeshi blogger, who was hacked to death by machete- wielding assailants in broad daylight here last year. An additional metropolitan magistrate court indicted the Ansarullah Bangla Team militants and fixed August 4 as the date for witnesses’ depositions in the murder case of Oyasiqur Rahman Babu. Oyasiqur was stabbed to death in Tejgaon Industrial area of Dhaka in March last year. Assistant Public Prosecutor Salauddin Hawlader said three suspects were produced before the court for the hearing. The remaining two, who are absconding, will be tried in absentia, he was quoted as saying by BD News. On morning of March 30 last year, machete-wielding assailants hacked Oyasiqur to death near his home here. Locals managed to nab two of the attackers and handed them to law enforcement officials while the third suspect was arrested by police later. Police produced the trio — Zikrullah alias Hasan, Ari-

the base was set alight. Senior figures within ANSIPRJ are also members of a Peul association that decried the murder of what it said were several Peuls falsely accused of supporting jihadists active in the area. A Peul radical, Amadou Koufa, leads the Macina Liberation Front (FLM), a new group that emerged in 2015 and has claimed responsibility for a number of attacks, some targeting security forces in central Mali. Several security sources in the region told AFP they doubted the veracity of the claim of responsibility from ANSIPRJ as the group was only founded last month following inter-communal clashes in the area and lacked the means to mount an attack. Coulibaly said the government was aware “a group had issued a claim. We are being careful.” “One thing is sure, this was a terrorist action that targeted a military objective. So an appropriate military response is forthcoming,” he added. The Malian government said the attackers would be hunted down and punished, and that the military had control of Nampala.

win the presidency, Trump said he would also win the key State of Ohio, which is hosting the four-day convention. “We are going to win the presidency and bring real change and leadership back to Washington,” Trump said. “This is going to be a leadership that puts the American people first. We are going to bring back our jobs. We are going to rebuild our depleted military and take care of our great veterans. We are going to have strong borders,” the real estate tycoon from New York said. Trump would face Clinton of the Democratic Party in the November 8 presidential elections. If elected, he would be the first successful businessman without any political experience to become the president of the US. Trump’s son, who earlier choked up after casting New York’s nominating votes, vowed that his father would restore American potential. “Congratulations Dad. We love you,” screamed the Junior Trump as the giant screen inside the Quicken Loan Arena showed that the billionaire is on top of the delegates.

ful Islam and Saiful — in court today and all of them pleaded not guilty. M a d r a s s a s t u d e n t s, Zikrullah and Ariful, were nabbed by locals from the spot while police arrested Saiful later. The fugitive suspects are Junayed Ahmed alias Taher and Akram Hossain. Police said the arrested suspects confessed during interrogation that Oyasiqur was murdered for his writings on religious issues. The blogger was working at a travel agency called Fareast Aviation as a trainer after completing his studies from the Tejgaon College in Dhaka. Oyasiur hailed from Hajipur village in Lakshmipur district. He was mainly active on the Facebook where he used to write on religion, science and against communalism. Oyasiqur was killed barely after a month of the murder of secular writer-blogger Avijit Roy on the Dhaka university campus in a similar way by machete-wielding assailants. Protesting the killing, Oyasiqur wrote on the banner of his Facebook page -- ‘I am Avijit. Words cannot be killed’.

C l e v e l a n d, J u l 2 0 (PTI): Donald Trump today clinched the Republican party’s presidential nomination to run against Democrat Hillary Clinton in the November polls, a stunning rise for an outsider after months of controversial campaigning that saw him crushing 16 well-established party rivals. Trump, whose election theme is “Make America Great Again”, was declared the party’s nominee at the Republican National Convention here after his son Donald J Trump Junior cast the vote of elected delegates from his home state of New York, that gave him the requisite 1,237 votes required to cross the half way mark. 70-year-old Trump had joined politics only a year ago and stormed the Republican party by defeating primary opponents, including experienced, well-funded candidates such as John Kasich and Jeb Bush. “Donald Trump having received the majority of the votes cast has been selected as the Republican Party nominee of the president of the United States,” announced Paul Ryan, House of Representa-

ack White could be set to become the first person to play a vinyl record in space after the musician’s Third Man Records released a teaser clip for a mysterious upcoming event. In 2012, the former White Stripes man astronaut Buzz Aldrin that he was working on a “secret project” to get one of the songs on his Third Man Records label to be the “first vinyl record played in outer space”. Asked how he planned to do it, White said he was planning “to launch a balloon that carries a vinyl record player. And figure out a way to drop the needle with all that turbulence up there and ensure that it will still play”. A video posted to the Third Man Records Facebook page on Tuesday (July 19) claimed that they would “make vinyl history again” on July 30. The video parodies the Star Wars opening with a gold vinyl record spinning in space. The record is shown to be Carl Sagan’s ‘A Glorious Dawn’, released on 7” by Third Man in 2009. White was recently appointed to a 45-member local council that will study gender equity in the city. The council will feed back “datainformed recommendations and advice” to Mayor Megan Berry. Appearing at a press conference in Nashville last week, White gave a speech about gender equality.

Brazil coach happy to rely on Neymar for Rio Olympic gold

Neymar skipped the Copa America but will be part of the Brazil squad for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Rio de Janeiro, Jul 20 (Agencies): Brazil’s Olympic coach admitted on Tuesday that he was relying

on Barcelona star forward Neymar to shoot the hosts to a first Games gold in Rio next month.

Current under-20s coach Rogerio Micale has been charged with rejuvenating Brazilian football in Rio after Dunga was fired following Brazil’s shock first-round exit from the Copa America. “I want to be dependent on Neymar,” he said, as the squad went through its first training session for the Rio Games. “What coach in the world would not want a Neymar in his team? They say it’s not good to be dependent on Neymar, but I do not agree: I would always have a Neymar in my team.” Micale’s stance is in stark contrast Dunga, who had tried to suggest the Brazilian side was not a one-man team. The Rio Games start on August 5.

Grappler Phogat eyes gold at Rio New Delhi, Jul 20 (IANS): Reigning Commonwealth Games champion grappler Vinesh Phogat has set her goal high -- nothing less than a gold at the upcoming Rio Olympics will quench her thirst. Coming from a Haryanvi family of wrestlers, this youngster aspires to become a “sporting heroine” in the country. The 21-year-old was beaming with confidence after returning from a training camp in Spain earlier this week. “The target is nothing less than a gold at Rio. Like the other wrestlers, I also have two hands and legs, so why will I be intimidated?” she told IANS.

London, Jul 20 (Agencies): WWE heavyweight Brock Lesnar has returned a second positive doping test, the UFC has announced. Lesnar, 39, tested positive for an unnamed substance in an in-competition sample after his UFC 200 heavyweight victory over Mark

UFC anti-doping policy states that a legal review process is afforded to all athletes before any sanctions are imposed. Lesnar’s victory over Hunt at UFC 200 in his first MMA fight in four years secured him a UFC record purse of $2.5m (£1.9m).

Antigua, Jul 20 (Agencies): India and West Indies commence a four-Test series at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua on Thursday with the visitors heavily favoured to extend a 14-year unbeaten run against the hosts. Such is the gap in performance between the two teams that anything less than a 3-0 triumph by the Indians will see them lose rating points in their quest to close the gap on Australia at the top of the official international Test rankings. ago. They have stuck with veteran batsman Marlon Samuels, but he is badly in need of a run of scores. Functional but unattractive opener Kraigg Brathwaite will be entrusted with the tough task of providing solidity at the top of the order. West Indies’ biggest concern, though, is in the bowling department where the two main wicket-takers, pacer Shannon Gabriel and legspinner Devendra Bishoo, have been injury-prone over the past 12 months. Fast-medium bowler Miguel Cummins is tipped for a Test debut having replaced the retired Jerome Taylor while skipper Jason Holder and fellow all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite are likely to be called upon to produce long, tight spells of medium pace. India appear to be contemplating omitting the seasoned Rohit Sharma from their middle-order and still seem undecided over the pacespin balance of their bowling attack on a pitch that traditionally gets slower and lower over five days. Spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja are likely to be relied upon in Antigua, but India possess a third spin option in Amit Mishra. Ishant Sharma, Um-

IOC to decide Russia Rio ban ‘within a week’ Indian hockey wizard Shahid dies

L AU S A N N E , J ul 2 0 (Agencies): The International Olympic Committee says it will decide “within seven days” whether to ban Russia from the Rio Games over rampant state-run doping. “We expect [to have] a decision within seven days on the participation of Russian competitors in Rio,” IOC media relations chief Emmanuelle Moreau said. The Games in Rio de Janeiro open on August 5. The IOC has faced growing calls to hit Russia with an outright ban after a report commissioned by the World Anti Doping Agency found the country ran an elaborate cheating program at the 2014 Sochi Olympics and other major events. Following an emergency conference on Tuesday, the IOC’s executive board said it would study the “legal options” regarding a prospective Russia suspension. It would be an unprecedented move, as no country has been excluded from an Olympics over doping. In less than two years, Russian spor t has been brought to the brink of being thrown out of the Rio Olympics. IOC leaders said they would consider a decision due on Thursday from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS)

on a previously imposed ban by athletics governing body IAAF against Russia’s track field and team. That ban followed similar revelations of rampant doping with support from Moscow. Sixty-eight Russian athletes have appealed to CAS challenging the IAAF’s right to punish an entire national federation, since some team members have no positive drug tests on their record.

The CAS ruling on the validity of collective punishment is expected to help guide the IOC’s decision on Russia’s eligibility for Rio.

Russia expects final decision on Sunday

Russia’s top Olympic official expects a final decision by Sunday on whether the entire Russian team will be banned from next month’s

games in Rio de Janeiro over allegations of state-sponsored doping. The International Olympic Committee is examining the legal options of a blanket ban following a report by World Anti-Doping Agency investigator Richard McLaren that accused Russia’s sports ministry of overseeing doping of the country’s Olympic athletes. “The issue will be finally resolved by the end of this week, probably on Sunday,” Russian Olympic Committee president Alexander Zhukov said Wednesday at a meeting of the ROC. Zhukov said his committee did not discuss the McLaren report at its meeting, although he also did not rule out legal action if Russia is hit with a total ban from the games. he Court of Arbitration for Sport will issue its verdict Thursday on Russia’s appeal to overturn the IAAF ban on its track and field athletes for the games. The IOC will take that ruling into account before making its own decision. Zhukov said he was hopeful of winning the appeal, adding that Russia’s plans for the Olympics assumed the track and field team would be allowed to compete. Russia plans to send a total of 387 athletes, including 68 in track and field, he said.

Boycott ruled out

Regardless of how the various doping-related cases turn out, Zhukov said a Russian Olympic boycott was out of the question. These boycotts just lead to a breakup of the Olympic movement,” he said. “I think that Russia will never take part in any boycott.” The Soviet Union boycotted the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, retaliating for the U.S.-led boycott of the 1980 Games in Moscow that followed the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Earlier Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman said a meeting between Putin and Russia’s Olympic athletes, previously scheduled for Thursday, would no longer take place. IOC executive board held a meeting by teleconference on Tuesday to consider its steps in the wake of the McLaren report, which found that 28 summer and winter Olympic sports were affected by state-operated cheating in Russia. WADA and other antidoping officials urged the IOC to consider the unprecedented step of excluding the entire Russian team. The IOC is expected to hold another executive board meeting in the next few days, possibly on Sunday, to consider whether to ban the Russian team.

N e w D el h i , J ul 2 0 (IANS): Hockey legend Mohammed Shahid died on Wednesday in a Gurgaon hospital after battling kidney and liver problems. He was 56. Shahid, one of the greatest names in Indian hockey, was part of the Indian team that clinched the gold medal in the 1980 Moscow Olympics. He was battling for life after a bout of jaundice and dengue made his condition worse. He had been admitted to SSL Hospital at Banaras Hindu University with severe stomach pain on June 29. As his condition did not improve, he was airlifted from Varanasi and admitted to the Medanta Medicity hospital in Gurgaon earlier this month. He is survived by his wife Parveen Shahid and twins Mohammad Saif and Heena Shahid. Born on April 14, 1960 in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, Shahid first grabbed attention at the senior international level during a four-nation tournament in Malaysia. Blessed with speed and the rare ability to dribble the ball at a fast pace, Shahid managed to revive interest in the national game during the

1980s when cricket had started to gain massive popularity following the 1983 World Cup win and the fan following of hockey had started to wane. Shahid, who formed a brilliant combination on the left side of the Indian midfield with another legend Zafar Iqbal, was one of the stars of the team that won the gold medal at the 1980 Moscow Olympics. The combination of Shahid and Iqbal also helped India win medals at the 1982 and 1986 Asian Games. Shahid, who also captained India during the 198586 season, received the Arjuna Award in 1981 and was honoured with the Padma Shri

in 1986. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday morning expressed grief over his untimely death and said the country has lost a talented sportsman. Paying tributes to one of the best known hockey stars of the country, Modi said the government tried its best to save Shahid. “In the untimely and unfortunate demise of Mohammed Shahid, India has lost a talented sportsman who played with immense passion & vigour,” he tweeted. “We tried our level best to save Mohammed Shahid but sadly, neither our help nor prayers were enough to save him. Tributes to him. RIP,” the Prime Minister added. Since retiring from hockey, the somewhat reclusive Shahid had worked as a sports officer with the Indian Railways and was based in his hometown of Varanasi. Hockey India also tweeted saying, “Hockey India grieves the untimely loss of India Hockey Legend Mohammed Shahid, who passed away today, 20 July 2016.” A host of former hockey stars expressed grief and offered condolences.

Vijender ready for ‘fight of the century’ against Amir Super Middleweight title by outlasting former WBC European champion Kerry Hope in a 10-round contest, cheered vociferously by delirious home fans on July 16.

Amir warns he will ‘ruin Vijender’s career’

Amir Khan has praised Vijender Singh after his WBO AsiaPacific title.

N e w D el h i , J ul 2 0 (Agencies): Indian boxing star Vijender Singh has exuded confidence that he’s ready to take on Pakistan-origin British fighter Amir Khan a day after latter cautioned him for his wish. In an interview to India Today, the WBO Asia Pacific lightweight champion said it will be a fight of the century. “If it happens it will be a huge fight. I am ready for it, ready to take that challenge. That’s my message to Amir. But I don’t know if it will become a reality, it will the

fight of the century, like Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao fight. I am ready to fight him anywhere,” Vijender said. Earlier on Tuesday, Amir Khan congratulated the 30year-old Indian dasher on his win against Australian Kerry Hope in the WBO Asia Pacific title fight but also called him a ‘kid’. “Congratulations to @boxervijender on the win. Careful what you wish for kid!,” tweeted Khan, a former Olympic silver-medallist and WBA lightweight world champion. Singh clinched his seventh straight win and the

“I find Vijender’s challenge quite funny, I will ruin his career,” British boxer of Pakistani origin, Amir Khan, told NDTV, when asked about a possible fight between him and India’s Vijender Singh. The 29-year-old from Bolton had very simple advice for Vijender. “Before calling out big names like me, he needs to build up his experience, some fighters do get very ambitious,” he said. The two-time world champion, who recently underwent a wrist surgery, says that he would love to fight Vijender but he still needs a couple of more years of experience before this big-billing bout. But what makes this fight a blockbuster even before it happens? Amir explains, “You’ve got the India-Pakistan connection & that will make this bout huge. It will be like IndiaPakistan in cricket”.

Federer and Nadal pull out of Toronto Masters

TORONTO, Jul 20 (Agencies): Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal on Tuesday pulled out of next week’s Toronto Masters, joining Wimbledon champion Andy Murray in deciding to skip the event. Seventeen-time major champion Federer’s last match was his loss to Canadian Milos Raonic in the Wimbledon semi-finals, while Nadal, who has won 14 titles in Grand Slam tournaments, has not played since withdrawing from the French Open in May with a wrist injury. World number three Federer has won the Toronto event twice in his career, but also missed the tournament last year. “Toronto is one of

my favourite events on the calendar and I am disappointed that I won’t be able to compete in front of the great tennis fans in Canada,” the Swiss great told Tennis Canada. Spain’s Nadal has still not recovered from the problem that forced him to end his campaign at Roland Garros when it was just two matches old. “I am disappointed to announce I won’t be able to come to Toronto to play this year,” said Nadal. Reigning Toronto champion Murray announced his decision to skip the tournament on Monday, saying that he too needed more time to recover from winning his third major title.

Buenos Aires, Jul 20 (IANS): Argentina legend Diego Maradona has expressed his desire to coach the national side and added that he is ready to work without payment. Maradona had previously coached Argentina from 2008 till the 2010 World Cup, but his tenure came to a premature end as Argentina lost 0-4 to Germany in the World Cup quarter-finals. He then enjoyed a stint in Dubai with Al Wasl in 2011, but was sacked a year later. Since then he has not undertaken any manage-

rial role. However, Argentina are looking for a replacement for Gerardo Martino, who resigned after Argentina lost to Chile in the final of the Copa America Centenario a few weeks ago. And Maradona, who won the World Cup with Argentina in 1986, is hopeful that he will be considered for the job. “(Diego) Simeone was not interested in the job for financial reasons. Money is not an issue for me,” Maradona was quoted as saying by Fox Sports on Wednesday.
