NTC consultative meet on ‘Naga Peace Process’ DimapuR/KOHIMA, Jul 26 (NPN): Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC) on Tuesday organised a day-long consultative meeting on ‘Naga Peace Process’ with special reference to Nagas of Nagaland with Nagaland Tribe Hohos, civil society organisations and intellectuals at APO Hall, Kohima. In a press release, NTC president Lendinoktang Ao and general secretary Nribemo Ngullie said the house after threadbare discussion on crucial issue had unanimously decided to issue a statement as follows: “The Nagas of Nagaland had initiated and spear headed the Naga National Movement and integration and still remain the back bone of the struggle. Whereas, the present trends of Political negotiation tend to ignore the importance of the Nagas of Nagaland. Whereas, the Nagas of Nagaland have no intention to unduly interfere in such negotiation which is found exclusive for Naga brethren outside the State of Nagaland. Nevertheless, the negotiation should be inclusive of other NNPGs and the Nagas of Nagaland be taken in to confidence prior to finalization of such agreement.” (Cont’d on p-7)

NEW DELHI, JUL 26 (AGENCIES): Clarifying that Special Category States status have been discarded, Minister of State for Planning Rao Inderjit Singh said that Union Government has decided to increase the share of net shareable taxes to the States from 32 per cent earlier to 42 per cent for the period 2015-20. The Minister said in a Rajya Sabha reply that the Fourteenth Finance Commission (FFC) has not made any distinction between General Category States and Special Category States in the horizontal distribution of shareable taxes amongst the States. Singh said that according to the recommendations of the FFC, the Union Government has decided to increase the share of net shareable taxes to the States. Singh’s reply sets at rest all speculation over the status of the Special Category States, as Sarbananda Sonowal Government has been facing attacks from the Opposition for its failure to get the Special Category Status restored. Special Category Status for plan assistance has been granted in the past by the National Development Council to some States that are characterized by a number of features necessitating special consideration. These features include hilly and difficult terrain, low population density and sizeable share of tribal population, strategic location along borders.

Sharmila to end fast, get married and fight polls

Irom Sharmila Correspondent

IMPHAL, JUL 26: In a stunning decision, anti-AFSPA crusader Irom Chanu Sharmila on Tuesday declared to end her 16-year-old hunger-strike by August and contest Assembly elections as an Independent candidate. “Now I have taken a decision to change the course of my 16-year-old struggle. I am planning to end up the fasting by the second week of August and contest the 2017 elections as independent candidate,” Sharmila told reporters after coming out from the court of Imphal West chief judicial magistrate Laukhanpau Tonsin on Tuesday. She was produced before the court on Tuesday. The court will hear her case again on August 9. She planned to end up the fasting stir by August 15, but she may end up the stir by August 9, she hinted. The Iron Lady of Manipur has been on an in-

definite fast since November 2000 demanding repeal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act. Sharmila repeatedly made it clear that she wished to contest the 2017 general elections to the state Assembly as independent candidate, preferably from her home constituency, Khurai Assembly constituency of Imphal East district. “No changes can be brought in the system without making any change in administrative system. This is the reason behind my decision. I have no other agenda except campaign against AFSPA,” she said. Shamila expressed her dissatisfaction over the failure of the politicians to listen to her demand also alleged lack of supports from the civil society. Sharmila said, “In my 16 years of struggle, I felt discouraged with no visible changes. I want to emerge victorious during my lifetime”. She further said that her decision to contest the elections was purely related with her struggle to repeal AFSPA. “I want to fight this draconian law through political arena. “Now I believe no change can be brought about without political power,” she felt. “Even if I am defeated in the election, I will not retreat from my struggle. I will continue to fight,” she said. She also expressed her desire to get married and lead a normal life.

SMSA stops sand export to Nagaland DIMAPUR, JUL 26 (NPN): Sand Mahaldars and Suppliers Association (SMSA), HQ Manja, Karbi Anglong has temporarily imposed ban on the export of sand to Nagaland along NH-36 and NH-39 with effect from July 27, 2016. In a press release, SMSA president Jackson Kramsa said the decision was unanimously taken by all mahaldars during an emergency meeting of the association on July 26, 2016. Pointing out the reasons, SMSA said the sand laden truck drivers breached the April 6, 2016 agreement, by not paying the right price in “their notorious game” and thus creating misunderstanding between the mahaldars. Also, alleging that one Nanda Singh alias Nito Sumi of Dimapur has been creating “constant misunderstanding between the mahaldars”, Kramsa claimed that Nanda has time and again interfered in the business of SMSA and the forest department of Kabri Anglong. Kramsa further alleged that Nanda was instigating mahaldars by promising them in bringing more number of trucks in a particular ghat at low rates. “He has been instigating some local youth which might lead to communal misunderstanding,” Kramsa alleged. In this regard, Kramsa has requested the Sand Stockist and Suppliers union Dimapur (SSSUD) to urge Nanda to “stop his irrelevant activities in interfering in others business” before the situation turned worse.
