pealed to the Naga leaders in particular and the public, to realize the value of reconciliation and to reaffirm the Naga unity, as Swu had wished for till his last breathe. Social activist Niketu Iralu in his solidarity speech said Isak Swu played his political leadership role with evangelical fervor and zeal to his Christian faith which he had inherited from his pioneering father. Iralu said Nagas would pray that the legacy of his commitment to his faith would be brought to bear on the tough issues still to be resolved in the common journey ahead of all of us. Iralu said Isak was his closest college class friend and that this was his last earthly passage through Kohima town where he grew up. Kohima Village Council chairman, Medoselhou

Keretsü said “his demise shook our nation however, we should take this platform to urge brothers and sisters to stand together united which must be his dream”. The programme was chaired by advisory board chairman APO Vipralhou Kesiezie, special tribute presented by Angami Students’ Union while benediction prayer was proposed by Rev. Fr. Alex Vizo. Niki, ULFA (I), UKLF and others condole demise of late Isak Chishi Swu

Niki Sümi: NSCN (K) deputy Cin-C, ‘gen.’ Niki Sumi has expressed his deep condolences over the demise of Isak Chishi Swu. In his message, Niki said late Swu relentlessly led Nagas through the darkest period and gave them new meaning and hope. “He fiercely advocated Christianity, now we proudly declare our state as Christian state to the world. Till heaven and earth is no more we will carry forward his legacy”, Niki said. He further prayed that God grant strength and comfort to the bereaved family. ULFA(I): United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) said it was pained by the passing away of NSCN (I-M) chairman Isak Chishi Swu. Describing him as a towering personality, ULFA(I) chairman Dr Abhizeet Asom in his condolence message said Swu was a religious man with an amicable personality which was a great asset for his group in bringing unity between tribes and taking forward the Naga cause. He said with his mature skill and statesmanship, Swu tried his best to undo the shackles of the 1975 Shillong Accord. Though Swu has left this world with his dream unfinished, Asom said “but nevertheless undefeated at the hands of the treacherous Indian establishment, with the laurel on his head of Naga National hero.” UKLF: United Kuki Liberation Front (UKLF) in a condolence message said it was very saddened to hear the news of the untimely demise of Isak Chishi Swu, chairman of the NSCN (I-M). In a condolence message UKLF said late Swu was one of the exemplary pioneering leaders who inspired many revolutionary leaders in the northeast to visualize greater visions for their respective community and causes. “It is with great veneration that the UKLF would like to acknowledge his contribution in sowing seeds of vision and with deep sorrow, convey our deepest condolence to his family, loved ones and the organization he strived to bring to greater good”, stated UKLF . It stated that a revolutionary leader always works hard behind the scene and suffers many sorrows, sacrificing their own personal pleasures for which the public is usually unaware. “Isak Chishi Swu was such a man striving hard silently for the greater good of the Nagas in particular, for which the fruit of his labour was manifested with the signing of the Naga Peace Accord; which has brought hope and pride in the hearts of Nagas after a long wait of almost two decades. This has brought hope not just to the Nagas but to other similar revolutionaries in the northeast to press on until a feasible political settlement is achieved and not to give up. Although he is no longer with us to witness the full fruition of his efforts, he has left hope and a bright future for the Nagas to continue striving until his dream for greater Nagalim is achieved”, added UKLF. It then expressed the hope that NSCN (I-M) finds a suitable leader to replace the great void he has left behind. The UKLF has also expressed its deepest condolence to the great leader and to his organization and followers who we hope will follow in his footstep to bring greater glory to the race he once started. “May he continue to inspire us”, stated UKLF. KRN: Khonoma Rüffüno Nagaland (KRN) has conveyed condolences

to the bereaved family members of Chairman Isak Chishi Swu. KRN said late Isak Swu gave the prime years of his life for the Naga national cause and his sacrifice for the cause and devotion to his Christian faith defined his leadership. Assam to form Special force to protect rhino

Heavy rains, landslides in Mnp; one drowned

Correspondent

IMPHAL, JUL 1 (IANS): Incessant rains and landslides along the mountainous National Highway (NH) No.37 have claimed one life and blocked supplies of food and medicines in Tamenglong district of Manipur. More rainfall is forecast over the next two days. A tribal, identified as Manchudai Gangmei, 45, drowned in the swollen Izei river in Tamenglong district on Thursday. His body was recovered on Friday. The roads have been flooded or blocked, disrupting the transport of food, medicines and other essential commodities from Imphal and Silchar in Assam to the district. Officials fear that rains may also have caused landslides along NH 2, a mountainous highway which snakes through Nagaland. Some of the empty trucks moving from Imphal have returned since it would not be possible for them to proceed towards other states for some days for fetching consumer items and fuel. The goods-laden trucks and other vehicles bound for Imphal also are stranded on way. The drivers and passengers of the stranded vehicles are buying anything eatable from the nearby tribal areas. Being poor, the people in villages do not have much by way of eatables to sell to the stranded persons. As water levels are increasing, the chances of the suspension and bailey bridges being swept away by the strong currents of the mountainous rivers are high, officials say.

GUWAHATI, JUL 1: To check poaching of one horned rhinoceros, Assam government will form a Special Rhino Protection Force. During the inaugural function of the week long 65th Van Mahotsav held at Gauhati University, Assam Forest Minister Pramila Rani Brahma said that, the state government has taken initiative to protect wild animals including one horned rhinoceros and to fight against poachers. Annual celebrations of Van Mahotsav gives us an opportunity to lend our hands in plantations and increase our green covers and we need to take the celebrations to every nook and corner of Assam,” Sonowal said. Sonowal also asked the Forest Department to popularise scientific explanations of Van Mahotsav and help everybody to realise the need for trees in society. Terming trees as the economic backbone of the State, Sonowal called upon everybody to work on a

mission mode to plant saplings and increase green cover and contribute towards a flourishing state economy. To imbibe love for the trees, Sonowal also urged upon parents to gift saplings to their children on birthdays. This would enable their children to generate love for trees, nature and environment. Emphasising that ‘Rhinos as the pride of Assam’, Sonowal called upon all sections of the people of the State to come forward and work as a deterrent against rhino poaching. The Assam CM also requested them to consider ‘rhino protection’ as their ‘state duty’. Sonowal also spoke on the need for a strong public opinion to protect and preserve the flora and fauna of Assam and exhorted on the need for a resolution to protect the rich biodiversity of the State. IAF inducts first squadron of home-grown fighter jet Tejas

The Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas is inducted into the 45 Squadron (flying dagger) of the IAF at a ceremony, at HAL (ASTE) in Bengaluru on Friday. (PTI) BENGALURU, JUL 1 (PTI): India’s first home-grown fighter jet was finally inducted into the IAF today after a tortuous saga spread over 33 long years with the launch of the first squadron of two Light Combat Aircraft(LCA) Tejas here, in a major milestone in the country’s military aviation. A Tejas aircraft, the fourth plus generation lightweight, multi-role supersonic single engine jet sporting the IAF colours soared to the skies, marking the raising of the first squadron of Tejas in the force at a ceremony preceded by inter-faith prayers, more than three decades after it went into development. The LCA, smallest and lightest of its class, was flown by Commanding Officer Group Captain Madhav Rangachari for a sortie for about seven minutes at the induction ceremony and was given a water cannon salute on landing. Prime Min-

ister Narendra Modi hailed the induction of Tejas as a matter of “unparalleled pride and happiness” and a step which illustrates the skills and strengths of Indian scientists. “Induction of indigenously made Tejas fighter jet into the Air Force fills our hearts with unparalleled pride & happiness,” he tweeted. “I laud HAL & ADA on the induction of Tejas fighter jet. This illustrates our skills & strengths to enhance indigenous defence manufacturing,” Modi said in another tweet. Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar said Tejas will take the country’s air strength to new heights. “Moment of National pride. Indigenously developed Tejas fighter jet inducted into Air Force. Tejas will take our air strength to new heights,” Parrikar tweeted. State-r un Hindustan Aeronautics Limited(HAL) handed over two Tejas aircraft

to IAF at a ceremony held at the Aircraft System Testing Establishment here earlier in the day. HAL officials and Air Marshal Jasbir Walia, Air Officer Commanding-in Chief, Southern Air Command, Air Marshal Rakesh Kumar Singh Bhadauria, the Deputy Chief of the Air Staff and HAL Chairman Suvarna Raju were present. A ‘Sarvadharma Samaroh’ (inter-faith prayer), a practice followed by Air force during such inductions, was also held. The two Tejas aircraft were inducted into 45 squadron of IAF, also called as “Flying Daggers”, which will be based in Bengaluru for the first two years before it is moved to Sulur in Tamil Nadu. The aircraft was named “Tejas” (meaning radiance in Sanskrit) by Atal Bihari Vajpayee as Prime Minister. Calling it a “capable” aircraft, HAL said it would be used for air to air and air

Delhi-Centre tussle: SC to hear AAP govt’s plea to restrain HC NEW DELHI, JUL 1 (PTI): Supreme Court Friday agreed to hear on Monday the plea of AAP government in Delhi seeking a direction that the High Court be restrained from delivering its judgement on issues including the scope of powers of the city government to exercise its authority in performing public functions. A bench headed by Chief Justice T S Thakur will hear the appeal of Delhi government in which it has been claimed that only the apex court has jurisdiction under the Constitution to deal with issues relating to the powers of States and Centre. Senior advocate Indira Jaising, appearing for the Arvind Kejriwal-led government, mentioned the matter for urgent hearing before the bench that also comprised Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud. “No judgement be allowed to be delivered without decision on the jurisdiction of the Delhi High Court with regard to the dispute in question,” the senior lawyer said. She further said that the dispute is centered around the powers of Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD) under Article 239A of the Constitution. It has been alleged by the AAP government that it is unable to function as most of its decisions are either annulled or changed by Centre at the behest of Lieutenant Governor (LG) Najeeb Jung on the ground that Delhi is not a complete state. At the outset, the bench was not inclined to accord an urgent hearing saying, “let

7 girl students, 1 woman injured in school bus accident KOLKATA, JUL 1 (PTI): In the second accident within a week involving school vehicle, eight persons, including seven girl students, were injured when the bus, they were travelling in, dashed against a road divider here today. The incident occurred at 6.10 am when the bus carrying students of Holy Child School, at Beadon Street in North Kolkata, dashed against the divider of a footway on the opposite flank on Belgachia bridge, a senior police officer said. The bus was carrying 14 girl students. A female guardian of one of the students, who was travelling in the bus, was also injured, the officer said. The injured were taken to R G Kar Hospital where they were released after first aid. The driver is absconding, the officer said.

Arvind Kejriwal the Delhi HC come out with its judgement and you (Delhi govt) are free to raise all the issues before this court.” “The pendency of this SLP will not come in the way of the Delhi High Court in delivering the judgement. We will examine the issue as and when it comes before us,” the bench observed. However, the apex court later agreed to hear the plea of Delhi government on Monday. The Delhi government, in its appeal, has alleged that its power to do public services in the state has been adversely affected. It also raised a question as to whether the Union of India can take over all powers of the state government. There is an ongoing power tussle between Delhi government and the LG on various issues including the control over the Anti-Corruption Branch and power to transfer or retain bureaucrats. The HC had on May 24 reserved its verdict on the plea of the AAP government seeking a stay on the proceedings

on the petitions arising out of its standoff with the LG over powers to appoint bureaucrats in the national capital and other issues. The AAP government had sought a stay on proceedings on the ground that the issues involve a dispute of “federal nature” between the Centre and Delhi government and the Supreme Court has exclusive jurisdiction to deal with the matter. “If framers of the Constitution had wanted that disputes of federal nature to be dealt with by the various high courts, then there would have been no exclusive jurisdiction of the Supreme Court under Article 131 in such issues,” it had argued in the high court. During earlier arguments on the application, Additional Solicitor General Sanjay Jain had told the bench that Article 131 does not come in the way of jurisdiction of high courts under Article 226 of the Constitution. He had said that power of high courts cannot be ousted as Article 226 is a part of the doctrine of basic structure of the Constitution. A total of 11 cases arising out of the confrontation between the LG and Delhi government are being heard together by the high court. Delhi government had on May 28 last year approached the high court challenging the Centre’s notification of May 21 giving the LG absolute powers to appoint bureaucrats in the city. It had also challenged the July 23, 2014 notification limiting the jurisdiction of the Anti Corruption Branch to Delhi government officials only.

to ground strikes. Conceived as a replacement to the ageing MiG 21s, it has been designed by Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) and produced by HAL. The LCA has flown more than 3,000 sorties or 2,000 hours till date. Citing induction of Tejas as an important moment for the IAF, Air Marshal Jasbir Wali said it is a “milestone” with regard to indigenisation and self reliance. Asked why only two aircraft formed the first LCA squadron, he said, “It is our aircraft, when we buy, we buy eight or 20. It is our aircraft, we are part of it, and it will keep coming to us.” On Final Operational Clearance in March 2017, he said, “yes, yes we are hopeful. This (induction) is a big milestone. After this, things will move at a rapid pace.” IAF said the idea is to have a total of six aircraft this financial year and about eight in the next and by 2018 the full complement of 20 aircraft. All squadrons of Tejas will be made up of 20 planes, including four in reserve. As per the plan, 20 will be inducted under the “Initial Operational Clearance” and another 20 later with Beyond Visual Range Missile (BVR) and certain other features. IAF plans to induct over 80 aircraft with better specifications known as Tejas 1A. The upgraded version of Tejas, with Active Electrically Scanned Array Radar, Unified Electronic Warfare Suite, mid-air refuelling capacity and advanced BVRs, will cost between Rs 275 crore and Rs 300 crore.

PM to visit 4 African nations from July 7 to 11 NEW DELHI, JUL 1 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a five-day visit to Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania and Kenya beginning July 7, with an aim to further deepen India’s engagement with the resource-rich African continent where China has been expanding its influence. The Prime Minister’s visit comes within weeks after President Pranab Mukherjee and Vice President Hamid Ansari travelled to Africa to strengthen and reinvigorate India’s ties. “The visit will provide opportunities to build on close contacts at the highest political level and enhance mutual cooperation and understanding on major issues of common interests,” External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Vikas Swarup said. India’s current trade with Africa is around USD 75 billion and it has granted a whopping USD 7.4 billion for various developmental and capacity building projects in the past four years. India has implemented nearly 140 projects in 41 African countries during the period. Modi’s first destination will be Mozambique where he will have bilateral discussions with President Nyusi on July 7 to expand existing cooperation. In the second leg of his tour from July 8 to 9, Modi will be in South Africa where he will have meetings with President Jacob Zuma and other senior leaders across the political spectrum. The Prime Minister is also expected to visit Johannesburg, Pietermaritzburg and Durban during the visit, Swarup said.

Greening of 1 lakh km of NH to employ 10 lakh: Nitin Gadkari NEW DELHI, JUL 1 (PTI): Plantation drive on 1 lakh km of highways under the National Green Highways Mission will create jobs for 10 lakh youth and prove to be a game-changer for the rural economy, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Fridaysaid. Kick-starting the initial plantation drive on 1,500 km of National Highways at a cost of about Rs 300 crore, the Road Transport and Highways Minister said it is a unique venture and the government welcomed “start-ups” to join it unlike other programmes where prior experience is a must. Under the mission, the government plans to provide ‘green canopy’ on NHs at an estimated cost of Rs 5,000 crore, which is 1 per cent of the road construction cost of Rs 5 lakh crore till 2019, and may link it with NREGA to boost the rural economy. “We will soon take up the length of National Highways to 2 lakh km from about 1 lakh km and plantation along these is our responsibility. Converting one km of highway into green provides employment to 10 people and today, we launched scheme for 1,500 km which will employ 15,000 people,” the minister said at an event here to mark the launch of the plantation drive. Ten states are already on board with the Centre in the initial phase, besides NGOs and other bodies, including four start-ups which will be given the job of greening highways of 10 km each initially. Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) has adopted NH 31 for plantation and maintenance of trees. Besides, Coal India and other

Arvind Kejriwal such bodies have shown willingness. Gadkari said plantation will be accomplished on 3,000 km of national highways by the end of July. “Highways aside from environmental and aesthetic aspects have a huge potential to generate jobs and can prove to be a game-changer for agriculture and rural economy. It may even be linked with the NREGA scheme,” the highways minister said. Under the framework, the government has made it mandatory to set aside 1 per cent of the total project cost of any NH contract to a Green Fund corpus for plantation. Calling upon government and private agencies to join hands under the initiative, Gadkari also said only serious players need to come forward as the projects will be monitored through satellite technology with payments to be made only after successful implementation. An app to monitor realtime progress of the plantation drive and plants was also launched on the occasion. Yes Bank was the knowledge

partner for the project. Of the 10 states that joined hands for plantation, Haryana signed agreement for 415 km, Jammu & Kashmir for 100 km, Telangana for 150 km, Andhra Pradesh for 360 km, Madhya Pradesh for 150 km, and Assam for 50 km. So far, the government has roped in 22 agencies and will scale up the drive soon. Talking about environmental benefits that will flow from greening of highways, the minister said, “The afforestation will help in sequestering approximately 12 lakh mt carbon annually.” Gadkari said, “We are confident that the green highways project will go a long way in reinforcing India’s commitment made in CoP 21 summit for reducing carbon emissions up to 35 per cent by 2030 from 2005 levels and develop additional carbon sink of 2.5 billion tonnes through green cover outside forests.” He said that unfortunately, not much emphasis was given on the greening of highways earlier. “Farmers can join hands with the government under this initiative and open their nursery. Waste land will be converted into green forest,” the minister said. He said a pilot project to provide a canopy of bamboo on “one-km highway stretch” in Nagpur is also being planned. He also said the government plans to set up 1,300 roadside amenities which will house restaurants, washrooms and helipads and have local cuisine and cultural parks to showcase local produce.

12 killed, 25 missing in torrential rains in U’khand

PITHORAGARH/ GOPESHWAR, JUL 1 (PTI): Twelve persons were killed and 25 others were missing as torrential rains and landslides hit Uttarakhand’s Pithoragarh and Chamoli districts in the wee hours today, burying villages in sludge with many residents trapped under the debris. While eight persons were killed in cloudburst in Pithoragarh district, four lives were claimed by heavy rains in Chamoli district. Two persons were swept away by the muddy waters and debris rushing down the slopes into Siron village in Chamoli. One person was killed in Ghat block and another in Sithel village in similar circumstances, SDM Chamoli S K Barnwal said, adding eight persons trapped in the debris have been rescued in the district so far. The cloudburst in Singhali area of Pithorgarh district early this morning brought over 100 mm rains in two hours in a region of 50 sq km, flattening homes in over seven villages, according to officials. “We have recovered five bodies from Singhali area while three bodies have been recovered from Thal village.

The search for others is on by rescue parties consisting of army and paramilitary personnel,” Pithoragarh District Magistrate H C Semwal said. “25 persons, missing from over seven villages of Singhali area in Didiihat sub division of Pithoragarh district, are being traced with the help of ITBP, SSB and Pithoragarh district police,” said district disaster management officer R S Rana who was on the spot. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat, who is is Delhi, expressed grief at the loss of lives and announced a compensation of Rs two lakh each to the families of the victims. “Many people are still trapped under tonnes of debris brought by the heavy rains. ITBP, SDRF and paramilitary personnel are involved in rescue work,” he said. “I am personally monitoring the situation from here. Chief Secretary too is keeping tab...we will give them (kin of victims) immediate compensation of Rs two lakh as per norms,” he said in Delhi. According to disaster management office sources, the cloudburst occurred in the villages of Singhali, Pat-

thakot, Ogla and Thal villages which are under heavy debris with many people feared trapped under it. The rescuers are trying their best to locate the people, Rana said. The MeT department in Dehradun had yesterday warned of heavy rains in isolated places in Uttarakhand especially Nainital, Udhamsingh Nagar and Champawat districts over the next 72 hours starting this morning. Light to moderate rains are also likely to occur at most places during the period, it had said. Several families of Bastari, Naulara, Singhali and Rimonia Nanchni villages have been affected by the cloudburst, Uttarakhand cabinet minister in-charge of district Dinesh Aggarwal said here. T h e m i n i s t e r, w h o reached the district headquarter immediately after the information about the disaster

reached the state capital, said, in a press conference that six bodies were recovered from debris by army and ITBP search teams early morning while 25 villagers are said to have been trapped under the rubble. “The team of Pithoragarh district administration and disaster mitigation personals reached the spot travelling on foot as the road beyond Khirchina was blocked,” he said. “The NDRF and SDRF teams are on their way to reach the spot where it is becoming difficult to remove the mud and thick layer which has covered the villages,” he said. The minister also said that due to lack of smooth transportation and communication to the affected area, the rescue operations are being delayed. “We hope the rescue teams will be able to remove mud and recovered the bodies by Saturday,” he said.

Games the corporate play

B

illed as the biggest ever taping scam in India, the Essar Tapes certainly beats the Radia Tapes by many miles. The alleged tapping of phones of VVIPs by an Essar employee was done from two offices, one in New Delhi, the other in Mumbai, according to the complaint to the PMO from lawyer Suren Uppal. The Essar Tapes involves the period from 2001 to 2006 when conversations between high political leaders, big corporate bosses, senior civilian bureaucrats in the central government and judge(s) were taped by the employee. The tapes showed how assorted artistes in the executive, legislature, judiciary and bureaucracy were dancing to the ringtones of the corporate world. Despite the huge interest it attracted, TV channels calling it bigger than the Radia Tapes and noted Supreme Court lawyer Prashant Bhushan tweeting it as the biggest expose of corporate/political corruption, the Narendra Modi government has moved below mandatory speed limits to get to the bottom of it. Names of several people, whose phones were allegedly tapped during the five-year period by Essar, came up after a 29-page complaint was submitted to the Prime Minister’s Office by a Delhi-based Supreme Court lawyer Suren Uppal. The names include top businessmen, bureaucrats, ministers and politicians were mentioned , that included a present minister and a present Lok Sabha MP from the ruling party. Conversations in the tapes reportedly included: manipulation of a murder trial to shield an influential central minister; talk of a Rs 2 crore bribe to a judge; managing a joint parliamentary committee to evade adverse remarks; corporatesponsored lobbying to help a union minister retain his portfolio; ensuring the disappearance of a file from a ministry to reap in a windfall; funding of political parties by corporates to prop up dummy candidates; ensuring that a plea before the SC is dismissed at the admission stage and conversation with bankers on restructuring loans on favourable terms. The conversations were copied, initially, on cassettes and later on CDs. Each handwritten sheet also has the number of the cassette in which the purported conversation is stored. The release of more than a 100 telephone conversations, allegedly of a prominent corporate lobbyist, by the Outlook magazine has given a glimpse into the close links between big business houses and political parties. The tapes - if authentic - indicate that at least some in the media and legal circles felt that a prominent industrialist was trying to secure a favourable verdict in the Supreme Court, in one of the most closely-watched corporate legal battles. The tapes - posted on the magazine’s website - also allegedly show how the lobbyist tried to -and succeeded - in bringing together warring corporate houses against a particular corporate house. The tapes also reveal a fascinating picture of the cut-throat world of lobbying on behalf of corporate interests. If the Radia tapes exposed the connivance of corporate and media houses in a symbiotic nexus in influencing some decisions of the government even including choosing who should head a particular ministry; the Essar Tapes has all this and more such influencing court judgement, making a selected parliamentary committee to evade unfavourable remarks etc. In the interest of truth and justice, the Modi government should not waste time in ordering a high level probe.

Post-mortem Konyak declares zero tolerance against the renegades T he Konyak conclave was held today under the aegis of the KONYAK UNION (KU) at Mon town on 30th June 2016. The issues pertaining to the 27th June midnight incident was seriously deliberated in the presence of all the Konyak Frontal Organisation and all units under the Konyak union (KU). The main core of discussion was centered in upholding and in safeguarding the standing aspiration of the Konyak under “One code”. Accordingly, stern actions against those Konyak renegades were also initiated by the conclave. Disturbances from such renegades/traitors within Konyak society had been observed for the first time in the history of the Konyaks which shall ever be recorded in the history of the Konyaks. On the contrary, the conclave itself was driven out with utmost feelings of patriotism and a sense of responsibility in safeguarding the integrity of the Konyaks. Such forced had compelled the Konyak Union to resolve for any extreme action. The ill consequences caused by injecting a virus of division had greatly shocked

the very institution which was seriously noted with utmost regrets and discontentment. The Conclave had out rightly termed those elements as necessary evil. On the contrary, those konyak renegades/traitors utterly intoxicated through false lies and means had been persuaded on many occasions by the Konyaks However, their fickle mindedness and un-human ways had forced them to sell of the very integrity of the Institution established under “One people One Code”. On many incidences, the Konyak tribe had always persuaded and propounded for peace, truth and love however, its silence & calmness were misunderstood by all. Enough is enough! The Konyak Union (KU) had resolved for a stern and extreme action on Mr. Hejei Konyak S/o Mankang Konyak of Chen Moho and Mr. Panglei Konyak S/o Longpai of T/Chingkho Village on the following incidences. On 23rd Feb 2016, the office of the Konyak Union had summoned the so-called SRF activist Mr. Hejei Konyak and Mr, Panglei Konyak and had fined a Rs. 15000 (fifteen

thousand) each for diluting the “traditional & Institutional code of the Konyaks”. Further, they were also persuaded/warned to refrain/abstain from any such activities failing which they would be fined Rs. 5,00,000,/(Five Lakhs) or may even be “Socially Ex-communicated”. But surprising, their continued instigative and provocative activities whereby even initiating to host the so-called SRF General Conference at Mon Town on 28th June was no doubt but a direct challenge. Hence the 27th June Midnight commotion was just a mild leakage of anger that is deeply rooted. The 27th June Midnight commotion incident had compelled to convent a “Konyak Conclave” consisting of all the Konyak Frontal Organization and all KU unit Presidents at Mon town on 30th June 2016. On failing to produce the two renegades, the councils of Chen Moho & T/Chingkho had paid Rs. 50000/- (fifty thousand each) to the Konyak Union. In accordance to the resolution, the Konyak Union (KU) had initiated the following action. 1. As resolved, the concern

Ward union had ceased the Properties belonging to the two renegades at Mon town. Such property shall remain under the custody of the Konyaks or until such time the Union so decide in future. 2. Both Chen Moho and T/Chingkho should “Socially Ex-communicate” the two renegades until such time the Konyak so decide to accommodate into the traditional institution of the Konyaks. 3. It was also resolved to rebel the influence of SRF on Konyak soil in any form. 4. The Konyaks had out rightly declares that any individual/parties/group/State Government if found accommodating/entertaining/acknowledging the cruel plea from those Konyak renegades shall not be tolerated and will consider as a direct challenge to the very institution of the Konyaks. 5. The konyak union further warned those konyaks currently enrolled under SRF to immediately denounce its membership by surrendering its ID card to the office of the Konyak Union on or before 20th july 2016. Remembering Dr. Kalam

A

n year ago, on this day, our nation lost a visionary par excellence. For leaders of today, consider this fact: When he died he left no mansion. No car. No offshore bank accounts. Rather unusual for someone who was scientific adviser to defence minister, scientific adviser to the government of India and president of India. Trying to speak to Dr. Kalam about his worth, many discover another respect in which this noble man defied the stereotype of an accomplished scientist, most respected leader and adored teacher of our times. He seemed most reluctant, almost embarrassed to speak about himself, though he did now and then on persuasion. All of Dr. Kalam’s initiatives were welcomed with different degrees of credit as he channelized his time and energy towards nation building in it’s real sense. Everywhere he went, he raised questions of the most appropriate model of development that encompassed sustainability, employment and holistic living. Surprisingly enough, he had answers for his questions. Throughout his life, whatever post he held, his moral superiority reigned with nil desire to attract publicity. His greatness created in our minds an image of a humble man whose honesty and simplicity propelled him to greater heights for the good of our country. His was a definitely ignited mind that will resource our earth for generations to come. Educationists and policy makers believed that Dr.Kalam vision for India would be successful. Hence many educational institutions were renamed after him in addition to key roads in various cities. Wherever he was , he was in the full bloom of reputation and was personally admired by all whom dignity of employment or splendour of reputation had made eminent. Dr. Kalam made no fuss over any “Fizzle”

for he measured his self-worth with a clear conscience. Through his simple, easy way of conversing Dr. Kalam delighted all and offended none. To say “ “For great men, religion is a way of making friends; small people make religion a fighting tool” one has to have a strong conviction that different religions and ideologies are meant to achieve peace and happiness. He shrugged off remarks and reviews on his religious roots, traditions he followed and beliefs he clinged on to with ease because of his convictions. He respected religious sensitivities and had every credential necessary to teach the world as to how conflicts and problems can be solved within a broad framework of the acknowledgement of different faiths and identities, in short a confluence of religions. The main virtue of Dr. Kalam was his distinctiveness, his originality and this he maintained till the end. He had in him the influence of ‘Lights from Many Lamps ‘, of ‘Thirukural’ in his ways of life and of ‘Man the unknown’ in how he dealt with other people. Being engrossed in such wonderful works, Dr. Kalam in his most inspired moments made us all incredibly aware of truth, even individual private truths that would break the chains and set people free to rise and shine for India. Given the manner in how he advocated the sacred truths of Thiruvalluvar and Kaniyan Pungundranar across the globe, I believe he was a Tamilian in heart and soul, a Global citizen whose virtues prompted many across the globe to learn and know more about Saint Poet Thiruvalluvar and his truths- Dr. Kalam was much more of a Tamilian than many politicians of TN who proclaim themselves to be guardians of the language- that is Dr.Kalam’s most valuable and distinctive characteristic. If there was a Tamilian who could ever help

DailyDevotion The Inevitable Penalty Naga National Council/NNC You will by no means get out of there till you have paid the last penny. —Matthew 5:26 There is no heaven that has a little corner of hell in it. God is determined to make you pure, holy, and right, and He will not allow you to escape from the scrutiny of the Holy Spirit for even one moment. He urged you to come to judgment immediately when He convicted you, but you did not obey. Then the inevitable process began to work, bringing its inevitable penalty. Now you have been “thrown into prison, [and]…you will by no means get out of there till you have paid the last penny” (5:2526). Yet you ask, “Is this a God of mercy and love?” When seen from God’s perspective, it is a glorious ministry of love. God is going to bring you out pure, spotless, and undefiled, but He wants you to recognize the nature you were exhibiting— the nature of demanding your right to yourself. The moment you are willing for God to change your nature, His recreating forces will begin to work. And the moment you realize that God’s purpose is to get you into the right relationship with Himself and then with others, He will reach to the very limits of the universe to help you take the right road. Decide to do it right now, saying, “Yes, Lord, I will write that letter,” or, “I will be reconciled to that person now.” These sermons of Jesus Christ are meant for your will and your conscience, not for your head. If you dispute these verses from the Sermon on the Mount with your head, you will dull the appeal to your heart. If you find yourself asking, “I wonder why I’m not growing spiritually with God?”— then ask yourself if you are paying your debts from God’s standpoint. Do now what you will have to do someday. Every moral question or call comes with an “ought” behind it— the knowledge of knowing what we ought to do.

people, even foreigners understand Thirukural as a transcendent truth kindling their curiosity, it could be none other than this son of Rameshwaram. Thiruvalluvar stands tall in Hualien, Taiwan since November 2015, also because Kalamji’s intentions were always right, opnions solid and his faith in goodness pure. “A complete Indian” or “The best exemplar of the Idea of India” or “A rare combination of a great statesman, acclaimed scientist, and a source of inspiration to the youth”, India needed Dr. Kalam and vice versa. Isn’t it a duty of our leaders to uphold his life of honesty, modesty and intellectual courage as a model of integrity in public life! As I write this piece in Dr. Kalam’s honour, I’m reminded of his last moments at IIM Shillong. And it’s natural to suppose “’Creating a Liveable Planet” should mean ‘Development with a human face’, which is an ardous agenda that admits of no short cuts or spectacular immediate results. Industrialization is easily pursued without keeping in mind the socially and environmentally relevant and urgent task of developing and sustaining grass-roots environmentalism. As much as has been done yesterday and today may be redone and undone tomorrow. The idea of PURA (Providing urban amenities in rural area) mooted and steered by him did prove that an urgent enterprise such as rural transformation would reduce historic inequalities. I wonder if this idea of Dr. Kalam calls for institution building, tamper-proof flow of funds to beneficiaries and a creation of credible leadership. As for me, Dr. Kalam represented the last shadow of greatness. If anybody wishes to follow this course, then there are enough good reasons. Dr. Elsa Lycias Joel, Mogappair East, Chennai

to its directive, the konyak public shall not be held responsible for any untoward incident that may inflict upon you. 6. The Konyak union also question the other tribes as to or on what condition they are sheltering and protecting those SRF that had entered into konyak soil with such cruel intention? KU anticipates that the remaining tribes to immediately take up stern action so as to avoid further confussion within. Konyak questioned enpo: The Konyak Union (KU) as aspires by the people, question the lukewarm stand of the Eastern Naga Peoples’ Organisation (ENPO) on the so called SRF issue within Eastern Nagaland. The Institution such as ENPO is the mandated organization by the 6 tribes of Eastern Nagaland however, the chaos & confusion that had arise today is no doubt but a clear sign of its weaknesses. The Konyak Union (KU) once again appeals ENPO executives/councils to refrain from any vested political /individualistic interest that display failures and fears as today. Konyak warns NPGS: The Konyaks had also warned that if any Naga Politicl Groups

(NPG) if found accommodating such Konyak renegades within its fold or safeguarding them then, Konyak will not hesitate in declaring that very Naga Political group as the very enemy of the Konyaks. Hence, all Naga Political Group and leaders are earnestly appealed to comply by the Standing resolution of the Konyaks. Konyak appeals: The Konyaks appeals all individual/ party concern and even the state Government to adhere and respect the institutional resolution of the Konyaks so as to maintain peaceful coexistence based on mutual trust and respect. Konyak final appeals to the two renegades: In spite of all those harsh action and steps inflicted upon the two renegades, the Konyak Union still reserve an honorable place for those two renegades provided they are willing to repent. The Social Konyak Institution is for all Konyaks provided we remain as Konyak adhering to the very code of the Konyaks. Manlip Konyak, President & Honang Konyak, General Secretary

Learn something from Asu’s death oh NPGs!!!

t is said that a persons life is known at the time of his/her death. We all talk ill of the NPGs not because everyone is extortionists, kidnappers, high handed etc but because of some few handful moles, naturally all workers are blamed or look down upon by the general public. But undeniably, there are many who whole heatedly sacrifice their lives and work for the Naga sovereignty with the spirit of Naga nationalism. It was very encouraging and overwhelming to see the mammoth gathering of the Naga people at Dimapur airport and Agri expo to get the glimpse of the mortal remains of Asu and pay homage to the departed soul of our National leader. Over the demise of Asu Isak Swu, irrespective of the all the differences, all other NPG leaders from top to bottom were seen in the funeral. Naga people from all walks of life especially the young Naga bloods unmindful of the scorching heat of the sun flooded the streets with warriors’ shouts and stood undisturbed and attended the funeral program at Agri expo Dimapur!!! Not to talk much about Asu Isak Swu’s life and his work for the nation because we all about it. If the general public, by forgetting all the misunderstandings and differences with the NPGs can come out and mourn together in one accord over the death of our National leader, this simply shows that, they can and are ready to give their blood for the cause of our Nation if at all the NPGs come to term with the general public by uniting themselves as one single Naga national organization which is the public’s dream and constant appeal yet to be fulfilled!!!. Today it’s Asu Isak Swu but tomorrow, any other veteran national leader will also

follow suit!! If the cry of the general public goes unheard and prolonged further, I am afraid and God forbid, general public might not show their united spirit of enthusiasm and respect to the dying national leader (s) unlike it is happening today over the death of A.Z. Phizo, Khodao Yanthan and Isak Swu. This far, if any lower strata cadres belonging to any NPG is heard or seen shot or arrested, the general public’s sympathy over them varies unlike it was shown to the top leaders. Why??? Good or bad, national leaders have to be respected and give them our due honour but considering the present over all social scenario, I am afraid, there might come a day when the general public’s sympathy will decrease and vanish and rather spew venom over the death leaders. We have come this more than six decades long way struggling for our sovereignty, we have seen many different changes taken place. People were once forcefully recruited to the NPG. The general people and churches at one point of time were too concerned about the national workers. But today, it has become allergic to support or talk about the national workers. Why??? To be precise, if your years long sacrifices made for the Naga nation to be acknowledged, remembered and cherished like that of A.Z. Phizo, Khodao Yanthan and Isak Swu, it is never too late for you to make a decision to sacrifice your position, ego, ideology all for the Naga unification and win absolute support/ sympathy of the general public and continue to pursue our common goal without differences of opinions and fight for our birth right sovereignty till the last man standing. Identity in the field of sports this time around. Still, let’s keep our fingers crossed and hope that the initiative of Indian Olympic Association to the International Boxing Association for a wildcard entry materializes. Whatever be the response, an Olympic bronze medal and five world boxing championship titles to her name speaks for itself. Even Tripura, for that matter, has come of age making a cut for ‘Rio 2016’ in 22 year old gymnast’s Dipakarmakar; that too in a sport which has yet to reinforce a respectable place in the country. The qualification is in itself a feat worthy of praise and she has our best wishes. The question is, how are we any different from our sister states that we still fail to solidify representation, even at the national level? With an Olympic mark as early as in 1948, Dr Talimeren Ao -captain of the first national football team, just where have we lost track? Our failure to capitalize on the initial gain is definitely a big loss, not irreparable though. Tribal as we are, tribal instincts are inherent and rest assured we can excel in the field of shooting and archery. Besides, wrestling is a forte for our Angami brothers. Just why is glory bound by firm handshakes of Naga ministers at Kohima public ground? With all due respect, Chekrovolu Swurothe ace Naga archer, with her credentials could consider investing in sports/archery academy. It would be prudent to pass on her talent filled tips to our many able and raring youth, devoid of a mentor. We Nagas are certainly not short of talent, what we lack is genuine involvement of our government and talk about individual

athlete; we may just be a little shy of commitment, doggedness and self-confidence!!!.. Being an ardent follower of sports, it’s appalling to see the pace with which the envisioned stadium at Residency colony, Dimapur, is shaping up. Just why can’t it graduate beyond the model of a boulder a day? It’s actually discouraging privy of the fact that the arena is producing more of drivers sans sporting talent. So porous and unattended it is that the arena, in its existing form has become a safe haven for many wrongdoings. This just depicts the status games and sports have in our society at the moment. Games once hosted responsibly and with immense pride by khels, students unions, district sports associations’ etc. has faded with time. So has the

culture of inter-village, range and district level competitions. Same applies to school and college sports meet, which has become more of a routine nature. I feel it’s high time the spirit of games and sports is revived and potential picks encouraged and supported to pursue the same full time. It is also time for our sports ministry to initiate proactive steps to provide our youth the representation required, because without necessary platform talent alone may not thrive. We aren’t aspiring or looking at results in a jiffy but spadework for times to come and it is certainly achievable if our sports ministry feels responsible in giving Nagaland an identity in the field of sports. Implementation of a uniform civil code is one of the core issues of BJP and the sangh parivar but the NDA governments in 19989 and 1999 and the current dispensation headed by Narendra Modi have put the contentious issues like scrapping of Article 370 and construction of Ram temple on the back burner. NEW DELHI, JUL 1 (PTI): Government has asked the Law Commission to examine the issue of implementation of a Uniform Civil Code, a move welcomed by the BJP and opposed by the Muslim Majlis and some activists. The Department of Legal Affairs has asked the Commission, a recommendatory body, to submit a report on the issue that has always been dear to BJP and the sangh parivar. The move assumes significance as the Supreme Court had recently said it would prefer a wider public debate before taking a decision on the constitutional validity of ‘triple talaq’, which many complain is abused by Muslim men to arbitrarily divorce their wives. The government is likely to inform the Supreme Court of its decision to refer the matter of the common code to the Law Commission when the matter comes up in September. Reacting to the government decision, the BJP favoured a uniform civil code saying that it has been opposed due to vote bank politics despite finding a mention in the Constitution. “There should be an open

It also asked MMTC to order import of 2,500 masoor against its already contracted quantity,” the Food Ministry said in a statement. Terming the new Insolvency and Bankruptcy law, which was approved by Parliament in May, as a milestone, he said the new law allows consolidation of all laws related to insolvency for companies, limited liability entities, unlimited liability partnerships and individuals apart from time-bound mechanism for maximisation of value of the assets. The new law also separates commercial aspects from judicial aspects of insolvency proceedings, he added. “The operationalisation of the new law has already started and the focus is to do it as fast as possible with insolvency professionals’ support subject to their availability,” Garg said. He also expressed hope that a fast-track insolvency process is also available for smaller corporates and help lead to a quantum leap in the credit market apart from laying the foundation for a corporate bond market. Calling upon ARCs to bring in more capital, Garg said all the 16 ARCs put together have only around Rs 4,000 crore in net-worth, while the bad loans in the system is close to Rs 8 lakh crore.

The official also said the just enacted Bankruptcy Code can help ARCs and banks a lot. Addressing the event on behalf of Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das who could not make it, his deputy Saurabh Garg said a draft law on debt resolution mechanism for distressed companies will put out for discussion shortly. “The government will soon put out a draft on resolution of distressed financial firms for discussion. New Delhi, Jul 1 (PTI): India and Cyprus have “successfully” completed negotiations on the bilateral tax treaty which provides for sourcebased taxation of capital gains on share sale, Cyprus Finance Ministry said today. The double taxation avoidance agreement grand fathers all income prior to April 1, 2017. “On June 29, 2016, the negotiation on the Double Taxation Agreement for the Avoidance of Double Taxation and the Prevention of Fiscal Evasion with respect to taxes on income between Cyprus and India has been successfully completed, in New Delhi,” Cyprus Finance Ministry said in a statement. Cyprus is a major source of foreign fund flows into the country. From April 2000 till March 2016, India received Foreign Direct Investment worth Rs 42,680.76 crore from Cyprus. “The agreement reached provides for source-based taxation for gains from the alienation of shares; investments undertaken prior to April 1, 2017 are grandfathered with the view that taxation of disposal of such shares at any future date remains with the contracting state of residence of the seller,” the statement said. The text has been agreed between the two negotiating teams of the contracting states and will contribute to further develop the trade and economic links between Cyprus and India, as well as with other countries.

fered losses of over Rs 15,000 crore in the fourth quarter of 2015-16 due to provisioning to cover for bad debts. Punjab National Bank, for instance, made an operational profit of Rs 12,000 crore in 2014-15, but declared a record loss because of such provisioning. As per a study by Assocham, commercial banks will need to write off their losses between 40 and 70 per cent in at least 240 companies, which are under heavy debt mostly in steel, construction, power, textiles and infrastructure. The study, conducted jointly with India Ratings and Research, also suggested asset reconstruction to cut their losses with the help of revamped asset reconstruction companies (ARCs) sector to help banks achieve a sustainable level of bank debts.

Banking fraud can be related to technological flaws related to both the employees and the customers of the banking system,” Sharma added. The top auditor also mentioned chit funds regulated by the state governments and the non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) as other areas of “big risks” due to their vulnerability to easy frauds. Mumbai, Jul 1 (PTI): Rating agencies need to be more transparent in disclosures on stressed companies and assets so that both the lenders as well as asset reconstruction companies can arrive at the right valuation, a senior Reserve Bank official said today. “We need better disclosures by credit rating agencies when it comes to stressed companies. Rating agencies must be more transparent in their disclosure about stressed assets and their owners,” RBI Chief General Manager Ajay K Choudhary said here at a seminar on ARCs (asset reconstruction companies) organised by an industry body and Association of ARCs. The RBI official said such disclosures can go a long way in resolving the dud loan problem in banking sector, which has touched a whopping Rs 8 lakh crore as of March. Admitting that there are inherent issues like valuation and working capital loans to a company under SDR (strategic debt restructuring), which are preventing smoother development of the domestic ARC industry, he said while banks are not ready to take deeper haircuts, the ARCs are not ready to pay higher value

Washington, Jul 1 (PTI): Britain’s decision to leave the European Union has created “significant uncertainty” that will have repercussions not only for the UK and Europe, but also for the global economy, the International Monetary Fund has warned. IMF spokesperson Gerry Rice said the Brexit was likely to cause a dampening of growth in the near term, and urged policy makers to act decisively while dealing with the situation. “Brexit has created significant uncertainty, and we believe this is likely to dampen growth in the near term, particularly in the UK, but with repercussions also for Europe and the global economy,” he said yesterday. Rice said policy makers needed to stand ready to act, if the impact of financial market turbulence and higher uncertainty threaten to materially weaken the global outlook, adding that “decisive policies will make a difference.” “Prolonged periods of uncertainty and associated declines in consumer and business confidence would mean even lower growth and again, policymakers in the UK and the EU have a key role to play in helping to reduce the uncertainty during this period,” he said.

NEWYORK, JUL 1 (AGENCIES): The unusual battle between Donald Trump and much of the Republican establishment on international trade is rapidly escalating, as the presumptive GOP nominee rails against business groups and members of his own party while defenders of sweeping free-trade pacts rebuke him. The rift deepened on Thursday when Trump called out the U.S. Chamber of Commerce by name for the second straight day and pilloried the North American Free Trade Agreement and the Trans-Pacific Partnership, two landmark trade agreements broadly supported by Republicans. “I’m messing with bad deals that we could make good,” Trump said in his speech at a shuttered manufacturing plant in Manchester, N.H. “I could make good deals. Why would somebody fight that? I mean, the U.S. Chamber fights. They said, ‘Oh, Trump wants to stop free trade.’ I don’t want to stop free trade. I love free trade, but I want to make great deals.” The mogul’s comments followed a flurry of insults throughout the week aimed at advocates of broad trade accords, which have been championed by Republican leaders for decades as crucial engines of capitalism. Trump accused TPP backers, for example, of wanting to “rape” the United States. For Trump, feuding with powerful business interests makes him an attractive can-

didate for many disaffected working-class voters, including some who have supported Democrats in the past. But the loud dispute also risks alienating many of the Republican Party’s wealthy benefactors at a time when he is struggling to kick his longdormant fundraising operation into gear. A stridently protectionist message could also push some moderate Main Street Republicans to support Democratic rival Hillary Clinton, in much the same way that many Republicans in the foreign policy world have done. Many business groups, which generally favor looser trade restrictions and are traditional Republican allies, have taken sharp issue with Trump’s latest comments and appear determined to rebut them. “While we never endorse in the presidential race, we do plan to be aggressive in presidential policy with both major party nominees,” said Scott Reed, the senior political strategist at the Chamber of Commerce. The group repudiated Trump in real time on Tuesday in a series of tweets as he delivered an address threatening to tear up trade accords and impose tariffs. Trump has long blamed broad trade agreements for harming U.S. workers. But this week has marked a rhetorical shift as he aggressively casts members of both parties who have supported trade deals as anti-American and in league with “special interests.” For many Republicans in particu-

lar, the rhetoric amounts to an assault on core ideological beliefs that have undergirded conservative economic policy for generations. The candidate’s arguments have also left an opening for sharp attacks by Clinton and other Democrats accusing him of hypocrisy. Trump in the past has talked favorably about outsourcing jobs overseas, and much of his Trump-branded apparel line and other products are manufactured in low-cost Asian countries. “Donald Trump is running as an anti-Republican Republican in many ways,” said David French, senior vice president of government relations at the National Retail Federation, which like the Chamber of Commerce is not taking sides in the presidential contest. French said Trump’s commentary on trade has been disappointing. Some business leaders are privately pessimistic that publicly fighting Trump hard on trade will be a winning proposition. His access to free media coverage through television and radio interviews presents a big obstacle to anyone standing in his way. It also remains to be seen how and if these groups will escalate their fight beyond social media and chastising in the news media. The Chamber of Commerce, for example, is focused heavily on down-ballot contests and, given that the group primarily supports Republicans, could end up helping Trump regardless.

Istanbul airport bombers planned hostage-taking ISTANBUL, JUL 1 (AFP): The three suicide attackers who struck Istanbul’s main international airport this week are believed to have been planning to take dozens of people hostage, a Turkish newspaper reported on Friday. A total of 44 people were killed in Tuesday night’s gun and bomb spree at Turkey’s busiest airport, the deadliest in a string of attacks to hit Istanbul this year. The pro-gover nment Sabah newspaper reported that the attackers scouted the scene and planned to take dozens of passengers hostage inside before carrying out a massacre. But they began the assault earlier than planned after attracting suspicion, Sabah said. “The coats they were wearing to disguise their suicide vests, despite the hot weather, drew the attention of citizens and a police officer,” the paper said. Turkish authorities believe the Islamic State group was behind the carnage, and have identified the attackers as a Russian, an Uzbek and a Kyrgyz national. Media have identified Akhmet Chatayev, from Russia’s Chechnya region, as the mastermind of the attack, with Hurriyet claiming he was the head of the IS group’s Istanbul cell. He allegedly organised two deadly bombings this year in the heart of Istanbul’s Sultanahmet tourist district and the main Istiklal shopping street earlier this year, Hurriyet said.

Xi warns nations against ‘harm’ to China’s sovereignty

Xi Jinping BEIJING, JUL 1 (PTI): President Xi Jinping Friday war ned foreign countries against “harming” China’s sovereignty as Beijing braced for a possible adverse verdict by a UN tribunal arbitrating on the Philippines’ petition over the South China Sea dispute. “No foreign countr y should expect us to swallow the bitter pill of harm to our national sovereignty, security or development interests,” said Xi, regarded as the most powerful Chinese leader after Mao Zedong, amid a rapturous applause by a large gathering of the ruling Communist Party of China officials to celebrate its 95th anniversary. Unlike his predecessor, Xi started his 10-year tenure at the helm of the Communist Party in 2013 heading the 88 million-strong party, the military and the presidency making him the strongest leader in the one-party state. In an apparent reference to US forays into the volatile South China Sea (SCS), Xi said at the glittering function at the Great Hall of People here that “we are not afraid of

trouble,” emphasising on the need for a powerful military and a wider role for China in global affairs. “We will not show up at other people’s front doors to flex our muscles. That does not show strength or scare anyone,” the 63-year-old Xi said taking a dig at the US pivot to Asia policy under which over 60 per cent of the Pentagon’s military assets were expected to be deployed in the Asia Pacific region to blunt Beijing’s growing military might. His comments came as the tribunal constituted under the UN Convention on Law of Seas (UNCLOS) arbitrating on the Philippines’ petition against China’s claims on islands and reefs in the SCS is set to deliver the verdict on July 12. China has boycotted the tribunal and announced that it would not accept the judgement. It also questioned the legality of the tribunal, while officials here stated that the verdict would go against Beijing. The Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan have counter claims over the SCS besides contesting China’s claims of sovereignty over almost all of the contested waterway. While Xi’s comments made no reference to the US or SCS dispute, China also has a border dispute with India. It also has a maritime dispute with Japan over uninhabited islands. Xi also commented on the ‘superpower’ status of the US saying that the world order should be decided not by one country or a few, but by broad international agreement.

Two schoolgirls Imam suspended Taiwan mistakenly fires after ‘pieces of supersonic missile towards China killed in Nepal cucumber’ found BEIJING, JUL 1 (AGEN- Meanwhile in Beijing, wall collapse ANKARA, JUL 1 (IANS): A 39-year-old imam in Turkey has been suspended after doctors reportedly found “pieces of cucumber” in his rectum during a checkup. The imam, who is from a Central Anatolian province, was admitted to hospital last week after suffering from severe abdominal pain and bleeding, Hurriyet Daily News reported on Friday. It was only then that doctors allegedly removed pieces of cucumber from his rectum, with the official diagnosis recorded as “bleeding in the anus and rectum and foreign object in the rectum”. The imam was discharged the following day, but word of his “bizarre mishap” made its way to the local press and he was subsequently suspended. An investigation has now been launched by the local branch of the “Religious Affairs Directorate”, where the imam had been working before he got the boot. The region’s Chamber of Doctors, however, have criticized hospital officials for leaking information about a patient. “The imam applied to a hospital for a medical condition, it is a crime to have leaked the information of a patient,” Ardil Bayram Sahin, a member of the Istanbul Chamber of Doctors’ Human Rights Commission, said. “Such rights violations may prevent people with various sexual practices, especially those who are public employees, from seeking medical assistance,” he added.

CIES): A Taiwanese warship on Friday “mistakenly” fired a supersonic “anti-ship missile” towards China as it celebrated 95th anniversary of the ruling Communist Party amid assertions by President Xi Jinping ruling out independence for Taiwan. The “accidental launch” of the domestically developed Hsiung Feng III anti-ship missile from a naval base in Kaohsiung, south of the island, took place as Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen, also commander-in-chief of the armed forces, was overseas. “The missile was launched by operational error. We are investigating the case,” ViceAdmiral Mei Chia-hsu of the Taiwanese Navy was quoted as saying by the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post. Asked if the incident risked a misunderstanding with Beijing, Admiral Mei said the navy had reported the incident to the island’s Defence Ministry, which would handle the case accordingly. The missile, with a range of 300 km, flew about 75 km before plunging into waters off Penghu, a Taiwanese —administered island in the Taiwan Strait.

Taiwan figured prominently in a speech by President Xi to a rally to mark the 95th anniversary of the Communist Party of China (CPC), where he said China is firmly opposed to Taiwan’s independence. Mr. Xi, who is also the general secretary of the CPC, stressed the political foundation of adhering to the 1992 Consensus and opposing “Taiwan independence” to ensure the peaceful development of crossStrait relations. “We firmly oppose the ‘Taiwan independence’ secessionist activities,” Mr. Xi said at the ceremony.

K AT H M A N D U, J U L 1 (IANS): At least two students were killed and 19 others sustained injuries on Friday when a compound wall collapsed on prefab classroom structures in a school in Lalitpur district, neighbouring the Nepali capital Kathmandu. Following incessant rain, the boundary wall of an adjoining estate fell upon the prefabricated structure of the private school while classes were on. The bricks and debris struck the classrooms of Grade III and VIII that were closer to the wall, killing two girl students of third grade, The Himalayan Times reported.

Its cover features an image of Pitt, 52, with a furrowed brow, and Jolie, 41,

social occasion for Charlotte – a public marker of her arrival on the literary scene, coming soon after the release of her best-selling novel, Jane Eyre. It’s generally accepted that Brontë wore the iconic ‘Thackeray Dress’ on this august occasion, but my research suggests this may be more rooted in myth, than in truth.” In the paper, Unravelling the Mystery: Charlotte Brontë ‘s 1850 ‘Thackeray Dress’, published in the journal Costume, Eleanor examines the style, fabric, context and history of the dress, which is normally housed at the Brontë Parsonage Museum in Haworth, UK, but will shortly be at The Morgan Library and Museum, New York. By delving deeper into surviving archival material, industrial practices and contemporary accounts, she confirms the garment can confidently be dated to the years close to 1850 – around the time of the dinner in Kensington, London. However, contemporary sartorial codes and conventions cast doubt on its suitability as evening wear and call into question its association with the event. where the performing arts‚ particularly music‚ played an important role in the effort to creating socially cohesive societies‚“ Mthethwa said during the launch of the song‚ held in Boksburg. “In this regard‚ South Africa is not an exception as the role of song in the anti-apartheid struggle is well documented.” No love‚ No life, which will reportedly be included in a fully-fledged album to be released by the department, comes in as an extension of the anti-racism campaign‚ in which the Department of Arts and Culture is actively involved. Mthethwa explained that music has the power to help drive the conversation of racism forward. “Given the continuing salience of race and racism and the negative role that social media has played as an unmediated platform‚ in the spewing of racial bigotry‚ it was appropriate that the department looked to music as a possible antidote to this racism scourge‚“ he revealed during his keynote address.

expert at the University of Southampton says: “Charlotte’s blue and white dress is a fascinating piece of clothing that reveals many insights into the life of its owner. Its size, the choice of materials and cut, and the quality have all allowed Eleanor to piece together when it was worn and what it reveals about the public life of this very private author.” Eleanor concludes: “My work deepens the mystery of this dress, but whatever the truth, it continues to exert power. In many ways, the myths that surround such an object - in this case involving the literary giants of both Charlotte Brontë and William Makepeace Thackeray, add a value and interest out of all proportion to its original worth.”

esearch by the University of Southampton has called into question a centuries-old story behind a dress that once belonged to one of the nation’s most beloved novelists – Charlotte Brontë. Colloquially coined the ‘Thackeray Dress’, this blue and white printed garment was always thought to have been worn by Brontë to a dinner, held in her honour at the home of her literary hero William Makepeace Thackeray on 12 June, 1850. However, a new study suggests this wasn’t the case. The famous dinner was a significant moment in Charlotte Brontë’s career, as historian and lead researcher at Southampton, Eleanor Houghton explains: “It was a highly important

Madonna can’t stop smiling as she’s reunited with Rocco

M

adonna has reunited with her teen son Rocco Ritchie during a visit to London. The mother and son were spotted leaving the A-list favourite Chiltern Firehouse with friends on Thursday night. Madonna, dressed all in black, couldn’t stop smiling as she left the venue flanked by security while her shaven-haired son ran ahead to their waiting car. The reunion comes as the Like A Virgin star spends more time with her teen son after a hellish few months of custody battle against her ex-husband Guy. Earlier this week, rebel Rocco took a playful dig at mum Madonna with a funny Instagram meme. The pair has now patched up their relationship and earlier this month he was spotted heading to the singer’s home in his first trip back to the

States since he left her Rebel Heart tour and defied a court order to go back to the Big Apple for Christmas. Proving that they’ve come a long way since then, over the weekend he posted a meme of a young boy smoking a big cigar and holding a gun while surrounded by alcohol. “When your mum finally goes out and you can be yourself,” read the caption. Madonna and Rocco’s dad Guy Ritchie, were originally expected in court at the beginning of the month for a hearing over the teen’s living arrangements, but the case now appears to be disposed, with a New York State Supreme Court motion pending. In April, she was seen visiting him in London and had a string of meetings with the Man From U.N.C.L.E. filmmaker.

India lose to NZ in six-nation tourney

Valencia, Jul 1 (PTI): Indian men’s hockey team lost 0-1 to New Zealand to slump to its its second defeat in the six-nation Invitational tournament and will now face the formidable Argentina in its penultimate round-robin match on Saturday. New Zealand’s Stephen Jenness scored the lone goal of the match in the 18th minute late last night. India had earlier lost 0-4 to Germany in their tournament opener before registering a fighting 2-1 win over Ireland in their next game. India are now placed fourth in the points table with just three points from one win and two defeats. Olympic champions Germany and Argentina lead the chart with six points from two wins followed by Spain on three points from two games. If India are to stay in the hunt for a place in the summit clash, Sardar Singh and his men have no option but to beat Argentina tomorrow.

Vicente del Bosque

Madrid, Jul 1 (IANS): Vicente del Bosque has said that he will step down as head coach of Spain’s football team after a glorious eight-year run that included triumphs in the 2008 and 2012 European Championships and the 2010

World Cup. “Without a doubt, I do not intend to continue as coach,” Efe quoted del Bosque as saying Radio Nacional de España. “It’s a matter we have been dealing with for some time. The decision is made.” Del Bosque denied, however, that he discussed the issue this week with Spanish football federation chief Angel Maria Villar. Noting that he remains under contract with the federation until July 31, he said he went to the team’s headquarters on Thursday as usual. Spain’s bid for a third consecutive Euro title was cut short on Monday, when La Roja lost 0-2 to Italy in the round of 16. “I have tried to manage

this issue with discretion because we are engaged in an enterprise and that must be respected. But it was a decision made in advance. However the European (championship) came out, it was decided,” Del Bosque said Thursday. Making no effor t to conceal his irritation, the coach repudiated media accounts that said he was leaving because he no longer felt up to the job. “Someone has attempted to muddle everything and create quarrels -- with I don’t know what intention -- to discredit me and I don’t know why,” the 65-year-old said. The coach reminded listeners that he had always acknowledged it would be very difficult for Spain to win a third straight European title.

REJOINDER (YANKHUM VILLAGE)

The undersigned seasonal chairman and secretary of Yankhum Village under Wokha district Nagaland felt it necessary to make this rejoinder to the purported declaration published by Shri. Yihamo Patton on 05th June 2016 (Nagaland Post). The said declaration made by the self styled seasonal chairman of Yankhum Village is highly condemnable. Shri. Yihamo Patton was never appointed by as seasonal Chairman by the Government nor by the bonafie residents of the Village. The Govt. had appointed Shri. Fubemo Shitiri as seasonal Chairman and Shri. Zubemo Lotha by the Government since 2009 (extended till 2017). Hence, the declaration published in Nagaland Post is misleading and undermining the authority of the government and such deliberate attempt of undermining the authority of competent Govt. with selfish interest deserve appropriate legal action. The Yankhum Village general public do not endorse to such cheap publication but shall accept the duly appointed seasonal chairman & secretary and not otherwise. Yibomo Fubemo Shitiri Head G.B. Yuliya Stepanova

PARIS, Jul 1 (Agencies): Once-banned Russian doping whistleblower Yuliya Stepanova has been declared eligible to compete at the Rio Olympics under a neutral flag, the IAAF said on Friday. The International Association of Athletics Fe d e r a t i o n s ( I A A F ) said Ste panova “is now eligible to compete in International Competitions as an independent neutral athlete”. Stepanova, a 29-yearold runner who specialises in the 800 metres, can also compete in the European Championships in Amsterdam from July 6-10. The IAAF Doping Review Board “unanimously accepted the application of Yuliya Stepanova ... as someone having made a truly exceptional contribution to the protection and promotion of clean athletes, fair play and the integrity and authenticity of the sport”. Her participation in the Games from August 5-21 is subject to formal approval by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The IAAF said it has received more than 80 applications from Russian athletes seeking exceptional eligibility to compete in

an individual capacity in Rio despite their country’s suspension for state-sponsored doping. Russian pole vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva applied on Thursday to compete following world champion hurdler Sergey Shubenkov and long jumper Daria Klishina. The IAAF decided last month to maintain the ban on Russian track and field competitors in Rio after findings of drug test violations, including ignored positive and altered test results. But the IAAF left the door ajar and clean athletes can still compete in Rio if they can prove they have not been tainted by the disgraced Russian system. Stepanova received a two-year ban from the IAAF in 2013 after abnormalities showed up in her biological passport. In 2014, she and her husband Vitaly Stepanov, who had worked at the Russian AntiDoping Agency (RUSADA), appeared in a German television documentar y, claiming widespread doping fraud in the Russian sports system. The Stepanovs alleged that officials within the nowdisgraced Russian athletics federation supplied banned substances in exchange for 5% of an athlete’s earnings. Officials, they said, also worked closely with antidoping officers to falsify or keep quiet tests. Stepanova added that it was also common for Russian athletes training outside of Russia to avoid out-of-competition testing by using false names. Following the startling revelations, Stepanova left Russia for Germany with her husband and then eight-monthold son. They have since settled in the United States.

Portugal beat Poland to enter Euro semis

Cristiano Ronaldo (C) celebrates with his teammates Pepe and Jose Fonte at the end of the Euro 2016 quarterfinal soccer match between Poland on Thursday. (AP/PTI) Marseille, Jul 1 (IANS): Portugal beat Poland 5-3 via a penalty shoot-out to reach the semi-finals of the European football championships after the two sides were deadlocked at 1-1 after the extra time here. During the penalty kicks on Friday, Poland won the coin toss, but opted to let Portugal shoot first. Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player to step

into the box and made no mistake by sending the keeper the wrong way, reports Efe. The sides were even through three kicks and Nani delivered the fourth for Portugal before Portuguese goalkeeper Rui Patricio stopped star midfielder Jakub Blaszczykowski to put his side ahead 4-3. Ricardo Quaresma then converted to make it 5-3.

Next up for Portugal will be the winner of Friday’s quarter-final between host nation France and dark horse Wales. Portugal have become the first team to reach a European Championship semi-finals without winning a game in 90 minutes. They collected three draws from group stage and eliminated Slovakia with a last minute goal from Quaresma

in the extra time in the round of 16. This is the fifth time Portugal have reached the semi-finals in their seven appearances. At the start of the match, the Poles took a 1-0 lead in the second minute as Kamil Grosicki broke free down the left side and delivered a cross to Bayern Munich star Robert Lewandowski, who fired the ball into

the net for his first goal of the tournament. Falling behind early rattled Portugal, whose first shot on goal came shortly before the half-hour mark, a weak effort from Real Madrid superstar Ronaldo that created no problems for Poland keeper Lukasz Fabianski. But of instead of moving in for the kill, the Polish squad retreated to wait for a chance on the counter-attack or a random deep ball to Lewandowski. Po r t u g a l g r a d u a l ly worked their way back into the match. Three minutes after the referee failed to call Poland’s Michal Pazdan for a foul on Ronaldo, the teenage Renato Sanches equalised for Portugal in the 33rd minute. Sanchez, who will be joining Lewandowski at Bayern in August after being snapped with a fee of 35 million euros, beat Fabianski with help from a deflection after taking a fine pass from Nani. The pace slowed considerably in the second half and both sides went into safetymode in the closing minutes of regulation. Nani and Poland’s Arkadiusz Milik had chances in the first overtime, but the most exciting moment of the second overtime was when a fan rushed onto the pitch and tried to embrace Portuguese captain Ronaldo. After which the penalty shoot-out followed and as did Portugal’s win.

Del Potro knocks out fourth seed Wawrinka del Potro’s first win against a Top 5 player in the Emirates ATP Rankings since he defeated Rafael Nadal at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event in Shanghai three years ago. Del Potro was making his return to the lawn of the All England Club after a two-year absence, having missed the event in 2014 and 2015 due to wrist injury. In his most recent trip to Wimbledon in 2013, he reached the semi-finals. The Argentine, the 2009 US Open champion, came into the tournament unseeded. The luck of the draw set up the second-round clash against Wawrinka, a two-time Del Potro returns a shot to Wawrinka during their Grand Slam champion who second round match on Friday. had made the quarter-finals LONDON, Jul 1 (Agen- Wawrinka 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(2), the past two years. The Swiss began the cies): Juan Martin del Potro 6-3 in the second round of knocked out No. 4 seed Stan Wimbledon on Friday. It was match on the front foot, using

his heavy ground strokes to target del Potro’s backhand wing. Wawrinka totaled 47 winners to his opponent’s 23. Del Potro stemmed the tide with precision serving, landing 75 per cent of first serves through the end of the third set. In the third-set tie-break, he used his skidding backhand slice to test Wawrinka’s patience and earned a commanding lead by sweeping the last five points. In the fourth set, del Potro continued to apply pressure on the Wawrinka serve, breaking in the eighth game and serving out the win on his first match point after two hours and 50 minutes. Wawrinka has reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals in the past two years, but suffered four consecutive first or second-round exits between 2010 and 2013.

Cricket in 2024 Olympics if Rome wins hosting bid Edinburgh, Jul 1 (PTI): Cricket will be part of the 2024 Olympics if Rome wins the bid to host the mega event, Italian cricket board chief Simone Gambino has said. Gambino’s comments coincided with the ongoing ICC Annual Conference here. “If Rome hosts the Olympics, cricket will be included. “We have had a firm commitment from the organising committee,” Gambino, president of the Federazione Cricket Italiana (FCI), was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo. Rome is bidding to host the 2024 Summer Games alongside Paris, Los Angeles and Budapest. The host city will have the opportunity to add five sports to the Olympics provided they fall under the regulations. If Rome does end up hosting the Games, the most likely location for cricket would be Bologna, where

World Cricket League Division Four matches were held in 2010. Amongst other issues discussed at the at the ICC Conference, Saudi Arabia was inducted as the 39th Associate member while the world body ratified the suspensions of USA Cricket Association (USACA) and the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN). It was also decided that an ICC delegation will visit the suspended nations in the near future. “Both Nepal and the US are important Members of the ICC as they have tremendous talent and potential,” ICC chairman Shashank Manohar said. “The ICC, as part of its game and market development strategy, will continue to provide the countries with as much support as possible so that they can put in place good governance and cricket structures,” he added.
