Rongmei recognition issue revived; CNTC issues 30-day ultimatum on govt. DIMAPUR, JUL 30 (NPN): Since 2012 when the DANII government, on the eve of the 2013 assembly election, notified Rongmeis as an indigenous tribe of Nagaland, it led to wide resentment among various tribes of Nagaland and the Nagaland Tribes Council(NTC) demanded revocation of the order. The demand also has the backing of various other tribes of Nagaland. Central Nagaland Tribes Council(CNTC)comprising of Aos, Lothas and Sumis, have issued a 30-day deadline with effect from July 30,2016 on the state government, to revoke recognition of Rongmei as an indigenous tribe of Nagaland and also resolved to demand that the endorsement by the Naga Hoho submitted to the government in September 22, 2008 be “withdrawn”. In a communiqué, CNTC warned the state government that the three tribes would resort to their own course of action if the demand was not met. The CNTC resolved to issue the ultimatum at a meeting of the apex bodies of the three constituent tribes on July 22 at Khehokhu village after a thorough deliberation. According to CNTC, the Rongmeis in Nagaland have no specific geographical territory within Nagaland and

granting recognition as a tribe of the state was unjustified and uncalled for. CNTC however said indigenous inhabitant status could be considered only to those who settled in Nagaland prior to 1963. CNTC termed the move for recognition as an “ulterior motive” and reiterated that if a small state like Nagaland went on giving indigenous tribe status to every inhabitant, then a day might come when the original inhabitants of present Nagaland would be “endangered by the ramifications of such thoughtless move”. CNTC reiterated that the state cannot afford to jeopardize its own interest and that of its future generation by granting indigenous tribe status fo “anyone demanding it” since such unwarranted actions only provided “ springboard for any outsider tomorrow” to demand the same status that would only spell “utter chaos” and “doom for the future generations.” Past demands: NTC had been on loggerheads with past and present chief ministersNeiphiu Rio and T.R.Zeliang over the issue when the state cabinet had purportedly overruled its own expert committee against granting status of scheduled tribe of Nagaland on Rongmeis. The NTC had pointed out that the expert committee maintained that granting en-

2 Saudi convicts lynched by inmates in Imphal prison Ensure quality services Correspondent

IMPHAL, Jul 30: Two convicted Saudi Arabians, who allegedly killed an under trial prisoner, were lynched by a mob of prisoners inside Manipur’s Shajiwa Central Jail early Saturday. The two slain Saudi Arabians were identified as Yusuf (21), son of Siddiq, and Abdul Salam (22), son of Abdul Ahad, from Madinatul Manou Warh, Saudi Arabia. Both the foreign nationals were in the jail after they were arrested from Manipur’s Moreh town bordering with Myanmar in 2013 under Foreigner Act. They were in the jail awaiting their deportation after their sentence period expired on June 23, 2014. Their deportations were under process, jail officials said. An official report said that they were lynched by the prisoners who rose up in anger after duo allegedly killed an under trial inmate identified as one Thangminlian Zou alias Bobon (29), son of late Kapkhanpao of Muallum village

of Manipur’s Churachandpur district. The duo allegedly smashed skull of Zou with both blunt and sharp weapons, shortly after midnight, the source said. Zou was an under trail prisoner lodged in the same jail after he was arrested in 2010 in connection with a murder case. His case was under trial stage in a session court here. The source said that the incident occurred at around 1am at Cell no. 6 of Sector 1 of the Shajiwa Central Jail, Imphal east where all the deceased were lodged together. On learning the killing of Zou, other inmates of the jail forcibly opened the cell and retaliated against Yusuf and Abdul. Security personnel at the jail had to fire gun in the air, tear gas shells and mock bombs to put the situation under control. Yusuf and Abdul succumbed to their injuries in the assault by the mob before the security personnel intervened. Three security personnel including a jailor and an in-

mate sustained injuries in the fracas, jail officials said. Heingang police of Imphal East transferred the dead bodies to JNIMS hospital for post mortem after registering a case. While the body of Zou has been handed over to his family members, the bodies of the two foreigners were deposited at JNIMS morgue. State home minister Gaikhangam was not available for immediate comment on the incident. However, ADGP prison, P Doungel said that as the two deceased were from foreign country, officials were trying to get in touch with the embassy of Saudi Arabia in the country. “So far no response comes up from their end. If we could not get any response from the embassy of Saudi Arabia, the two will be disposed as per the law of the land,” he added. Additional DGP (Prison) said officials on duty at the jail with the help of police personnel from Imphal East District Police controlled the

mob.

No exact reason of how the incident happed was yet to be known, he said, adding that preliminary report said that Zou was beaten up following a heated argument over some personal belongings with the two foreigners. Furious on learning the deadly clash, other inmates started attacking the two foreign inmates after breaking the two locks that locked the cell. Inmates pulled out the two Saudis and thrashed them before taking the duo to a pond located inside the prison complex. The inmates then pelted stones and other sharp iron towards them. The two with serious injuries died in the pond, he added. Meanwhile, media reports said that Union ministry of home affairs has sought a report on the incident following Saudi Arabia seeking information on the killings of its two citizens. Indian authority was in touch with Saudi Arabia about the bodies of the two Saudi Arabians, it added.

titlement to all 1313 Rongmeis and their descendents who had settled in the state prior to 1963 for availing benefits of reservation to pursue employment and education “will not make them an indigenous Naga tribe of the state”. The DAN-II government had maintained that recognition of Rongmei as a tribe of Nagaland was in lieu of some 1313 enumerated as Rongmeis in the electoral list. However, the state government’s own Election department had nullified the claim when it stated that “Rongmei is not found/not available” in the electoral roll under Kohima district since 1963. In July 2014 the Angami Public Organisation(APO) had also agreed with various other tribes of Nagaland and decided to urge upon the chief minister to derecognise Rongmei as a recognised indigenous community of the state. The APO at its executive meeting in April 2014 opined that opening of the door for recognition of other Naga tribes from other states(or country) would lead to demand by other Naga tribes of similar background such as Maos, Poumais, Tangkhuls, Hemis etc and added that if similar demands by other Naga tribes for recognition was denied then it would again amount to discrimination.

DC Mon Honje Konyak (2-R) and others at ENWO workshop on Saturday. (NP) Correspondent

MON, JUL 30 (NPN): Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mon Honje Konyak while not opposing 33% reservation of seats in town and municipal councils for women in Nagaland, has said that women should not be in a “hurry” to avail the quota. He was speaking at one day workshop organised by Eastern Nagaland Women Organization (ENWO) under the theme “together we build for change,” at KNSK meeting hall Mon Town, Saturday.

Po i n t i n g o u t t h a t women have “outshined” their counterparts in various fields, Konyak said that many changes was taking place in Naga society and that time would bring about more changes. Asserting that the present cultural and traditional practices were based on the role played by men and women in the past, similarly, he said that the role and practices followed today would someday become the tradition. Therefore, the DC suggested the women organisa-

tions to set modalities and select capable leaders at various levels so as to mould them for future. Incapable representatives on reservation would be meaningless, added Konyak. He also suggested the womenfolk to contest election instead of fighting for reservation. The DC also urged upon the womenfolk to take up the issue on amending Nagaland Village and Area Council Act so that there could be women representatives in the councils. Also speaking in the workshop, ENWO president

Birila Tokiu deliberated on 33% reservation of seats in town and municipal councils for women in Nagaland. She lamented that though there are many Naga women serving in the state government at various capacities, there was no women legislator in the Nagaland Legislative Assembly- the highest decision making body of the state. While appreciating the unity amongst the Konyak civil societies, who share and execute the responsibilities as one, Tokiu opined that Eastern Nagaland unite, everything was achievable. She maintained that only though unity, dedication, sincerity and commitment could the people in Eastern Nagaland more forward. Others who spoke on the workshop were Konyak Union president, Konyak Students Union president, ENWO vice president and KNSK president. Facilitators ENWO president and JACWR member, Temsula Thingchum. It may be mentioned that the workshop was organised with an objective to work towards maintaining peace and unity within the Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation (ENPO) area. The workshop was divided into two sessions, the first session for men and the second session for women.

and appealed them to lead decent lives through which to set an example for others to follow. The “most important level of organization being the workers”, he stressed on the need to multiply the number of party workers by propagating the Congress’ principles, ideologies and roadmap to the masses. front, Therie said everyone was disturbed and claimed that Dimapur today has become like a “slum” where the roads including the National Highway resemble riverbeds and development activities have come to naught. He said there was “no more reason for the people to vote for the present government” and that every voter must consciously vote and refuse to take bribes during elections as this was the rea-

son why development eludes the state. NPCC president also said that given opportunity, the Congress would explore ways to open the doors of the banks to the youth of the state to generate entrepreneurship and employment. Therie also exhorted women to prepare for the imminent Municipal Elections and said that the party would soon have training sessions for aspiring women

candidates. Assam includes B’desh pic in flood report to Rajnath

Rajnath Singh and Jitendra Singh look on as Sarbananda Sonowal gives ex-gratia relief of Rs. 4 lakh to a woman at Bhakat Gaon in Morigaon district. (PTI) GUWAHATI, JUL 30 (PTI): In a major goof-up, Assam government Friday included a two-year old world-famous photograph of Bangladesh’s Noakhali flood in its interim report on Assam flood to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh. The report, handed over

by Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to Singh during his day-long visit to survey the flood condition in the state, comprises nine photographs. Out of this, one is the famous picture of Noakhali flood, where a young boy rescues and carries a baby deer amidst flood

water. The picture, taken by wildlife photographer Hasibul Wahab and distributed by Caters News Agency in February 2014, received global appreciation at that time. The photo showed the boy, Belal, in his 20s risking his life to rescue the baby deer with waters reaching his eyes. Senior Assam government officials owned up the mistake when pointed out but tried to shift the blame on “some” DCs who forwarded the picture to the state capital. “It is a big mistake. We accept it. Actually some DCs have forwarded this to us because of similarity with situation in Kaziranga National Park,” a senior official said on condition of anonymity. Another official said residents in and around Kaziranga have been rescuing animals during current wave of flood and this might have “misled” officials to include the picture.

Congress accuses RSS of KSU, AUDC SU trafficking tribal girls in Assam hail KAAC move

NEW DELHI, JUL 30 (IANS): Congress on Saturday alleged that three affiliates of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) were involved in trafficking of 31 tribal girls from Assam under the garb of better education, and said that they would also raise the issue in Parliament. The three affiliates of the RSS as named by the Congress are ‘Rashtra Sevika Samiti’, ‘Vidya Bharti’ and ‘Sewa Bharti’. Congress also attacked the government by asking if “this was the fulfilment of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s promise of ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ scheme.” It also demanded that the Centre must intervene and ensure that the tribal girls were re-united with their families soon. “A detailed investigation and documentary evidence establishes as to how the Sangh Parivar flouted Indian and international laws on child rights to traffic 31 young tribal girls from Assam to Punjab and Gujarat to indoctrinate them,” Congress spokesperson Priyanka Chaturvedi told mediapersons.

“Orders to return these children to Assam, including those from the Assam State Commission for the Protection of Child Rights, the Child Welfare Committee, Kokrajhar, the State Child Protection Society and Childline, Delhi and Patiala were violated with impunity by Sangh Parivar-run institutions with active connivance of BJP-ruled governments of Gujarat and Punjab,” she added. Chaturvedi further said that out of the 31 girls, 20 of them are in children’s home in Rashtriya Shikshan Seva Pratishthan, Halvad, Gujarat and 11 of them are in Punjab. According to the Congress, on June 9 of 2015, 31 tribal girls, between the age of three and 11, from five border districts of Assam -- Kokrajhar, Goalpara, Dhubri, Chirang, and Bongaigaon -- were taken to Delhi on the Poorvottar Sampark Kranti Express. “Assam State Commission for the Protection of Child Rights wrote to the Punjab and Gujarat governments to ensure that the trafficked children are brought back to Assam.

‘Public curfew’ cripples life in Manipur

Correspondent

IMPHAL, JUL 30: Normal life in Manipur was jeopardised due to 24-hour “public curfew” call given by Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System (JCILPS) from Friday midnight to register their protest against police action against ILPS protestors and vandalising a makeshift platform of a public meeting at Singjamei on Friday morning. JCILPS has been demanding introduction of inner line permit system (ILPS) and roll back of “wanted tag”on the head of former JCILPS convenor Kh Ratan. Almost all major roads across Imphal and its outskirt wore deserted look as people stayed off the road in response to the strike call. In some places, roads were blocked by placing catching fire and

piling stones and tree and its branches across the road to disrupt road traffic since early morning. Educational institutions, business establishments and other private establishments remained closed in Imphal. Thin attendance in government offices was very thin. Banks and financial institutions also remained closed for the day. Oil pumps also downed their shutters. Similar situations were reported from other valley districts even though the strike has little impact in five hill districts where no commercial vehicles from Imphal arrived for the day. Inter-state and inter-district transport services were also suspended. No untoward incident was reported from anywhere till the time of filing this report. The public curfew is to end on Saturday midnight.

Frequent disruptions of Parl create bad impression: VP

COIMBATORE, JUL 30 (PTI): Federation of All Christian Educational Institutions Saturday staged a demonstration here, protesting against the draft National Education Policy 2016, terming it as an ‘infringement’ on the constitutional rights of minority institutions. About 1,000 agitators, mostly teachers, correspondents and management staff of 140 institutions, from Coimbatore, Tirupur, Erode and Karur districts, participated in the demonstration, raising slogans against the move to implement the policy. Maria Joseph, Federation convenor, alleged that the Centre wanted to bring back the Varnashram and Gurukulam model of learning, raising a question mark on the sovereignty of the nation.

Four persons beat up a Dalit woman and subsequently forced her to drink her urine on Thursday for allegedly practising witchcraft, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Anjani Kumar said. The woman left the village after the incident, the SDPO said, adding that she lodged an FIR yesterday.

DCW forwards case against AAP MLA to police NEW DELHI, JUL 30 (IANS): The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) on Saturday handed over a domestic violence case against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislator Manoj Kumar to the Delhi Police. A complaint alleging domestic violence and mental cruelty against Kumar was filed by his wife earlier this month, DCW said.“The Commission had summoned both parties thrice. After counselling them and understanding the issue in detail, we found the case fit to be transferred to the Delhi Police for further action,” a DCW official said. The AAP MLA and his wife were summoned by DCW on July 18, 23 and 30 respectively.

general public is free to do the same. Coming into well is holding the House to ransom for an interest of an individual or a group. “It means an individual or a group of members are impinging upon the privileges of other members of the House. Besides, it creates a bad impression in the public and the impression is that MPs don’t work and make only noises. I don’t think it is in our interest. How fair is that?” he said. Emphasising that “brevity” and “time management” during Zero and Question Hour was crucial, Ansari said members start their speech with an ‘alaap’. “In music ‘alaap’ (forming a prologue to the formal expression before a song) is a great thing, but in terms of Parliament it is nothing sort of disaster. The member has to ask his or her question. If the member decides to make a speech before the question (then) the time for answering the question is abridged,” he

AHMEDABAD, JUL 30 (PTI): Dalit rights groups will hold a mass gathering in Sabarmati area here tomorrow to register their protest over the brutal thrashing of fellow community members in Una taluka, after organisers agreed to hold the event at a changed venue for which police gave their nod. Earlier, the organisers had decided to hold the event outside the Collector Office here, to which the police had denied permission stating that it might lead to major traffic snarls. The gathering will be held at a ground near Acher depot in Sabarmati tomorrow. Among the special invitees are family members of Rohith Vemula, a Dalit research scholar from Hyderabad Central University, who had committed suicide early this year. Family members of victims from Thangadh in Surendranagar district, who were killed in police firing during a protest gathering in 2012 have also been invited, the organisers said, adding leaders from both BJP and Congress have been asked to stay away from the event. “The state government and police have been trying to prevent Dalits from uniting and coming under one banner, but considering the anger and mood of Dalits, police had to surrender and allow us to hold the event,” a Dalit leader and convener of the event, Jignesh Mevani said. He said the response from community members from across the state has been immense. “Family members of Rohith Vemula and Thangadh victims have been contacted to participate in the Sunday gathering. Rohith’s mother is not well, but his elder brother will participate”.

said. Ansari said the three minutes alloted to members during Zero Hour is sufficient for MPs to raise their issues and added, in Parliaments of many countries, the Question Hour is very rapid. Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha P J Kurien said proceedings of last couple of years show that the MPs have “failed” to make the government accountable. Observing that it was the duty of the Parliamentarians to to present the grievances of the public and make the government accountable, Kurien said “MPs are failing in doing so”. “We should make the government accountable for what they are doing, and for what they are not doing. That is the duty of the Parliamentarians. “But if you go through the proceedings of the House for the last couple of years, you will find that may be in both ways, we have failed, especially in terms of making the government accountable,” the deputy Chairman said. He said Question Hour is the time when the members are supposed to grill the government, but many a times it gets washed away. Kurien said there were many issues which members want to raise during Zero Hour, if those are raised then the government has to answer. “Question Hour is the time when you really hold the government accountable. Ministers will be on their toes. The minister will come prepared. If you can question the minister, you can grill him.

NEW DELHI, JUL 30 (PTI): Vice President Hamid Ansari Saturday voiced concern over the reduced duration of Parliament sessions and slammed frequent disruptions of proceedings, saying it was akin to holding the House to “ransom” for an interest of a group or an individual. Disruptions like coming into well mean losing precious time and also amount to “impinging on the privileges of the other members”, Ansari said addressing an orientation programme for newly-elected and nominated Rajya Sabha members. “This is my personal opinion and I have shared it with successive Prime Ministers (that) the duration of Parliament sitting over the years has contracted. “Earlier, Parliament used to sit for 100-110 days. There was sufficient time, both for discussion and debate and all other activities. Now the average is 70 days plus or minus. There is a much greater requirement for time management,” said Ansari, who is also Chairman of Rajya Sabha. Noting that disagreement can be conveyed by staging brief walkouts, the Vice President said disruptions and coming into well to protest by members were creating a bad impression among people. He said making the disagreement known can be done in a parliamentary manner. “If you yourself move out of the circle of what is parliamentary or unparliamentary then anybody in

Fresh clashes in Kashmir; 12 injured

Security jawans stand guard during curfew, in Downtown area of Srinagar on Saturday. (PTI) SRINAGAR, JUL 30 (PTI): Fresh clashes broke out between protesters and security forces Saturday in several parts of Kashmir as authorities lifted curfew in the Valley, except parts of Srinagar city and towns of Anatnag and Pampore. Nearly a dozen persons were injured in the violence, a police official said. A group of protesters started a march from Shopian town at around 5 PM and as they reached near a police

camp, some miscreants started pelting stones on the police installation, the official said. Three persons including a woman were injured in retaliatory action by the police. All the injured were referred to hospitals here for treatment. There were reports of clashes at several places in the Valley during the day but the situation remained by and large under control, the official said. Nine persons were injured in the clashes, the official said,

adding the condition of all the injured was stated to be stable. 48 people have died while more than 5,600 have been injured in the clashes between protesters and security forces since July 8 when Hizbul Mujahideen Commander Burhan Wani was killed in an encounter. A police official said curfew was lifted from most parts of the Valley today but restrictions on assembly of four or more persons continued in entire Kashmir. “Curfew is in place only in five police station areas of Srinagar city -- Nowhatta, Khanyar, Rainawari, Safakadal and Maharajgunj, Anantnag town and Pampore town,” he said. Authorities had yesterday imposed curfew and restrictions across Kashmir to thwart a call by separatist camp for march to historic Jamia Masjid. More than 100 persons including 46 security personnel were injured in the clashes reported from at least 70 places across the Valley. Mobile internet services continued to remain snapped in the entire Valley where the postpaid mobile telephony services have been restored across all networks. The incoming facility on prepaid connections has also been restored, but the outgoing calls are barred on such numbers. Meanwhile, normal life remained paralysed elsewhere in the Valley for the 22nd consecutive day today in view of the strike call given by the separatist camp. Schools, colleges and business establishments remained closed due to the strike while public transport remained off roads. Attendance in government offices was very thin, the official said.

China’s act in Uttarakhand not incursion: Parrikar PUNE, JUL 30 (PTI): Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar Saturday said the recent act of Chinese troops entering the border district of Chamoli in Uttarakhand was “transgression” and not “incursion”. Rubbishing media reports of Chinese “incursion” in the hill state, Parrikar said, “It was actually a transgression and not incursion. Media used the word incursion, but actually it was transgression.” “I am happy that not a single bullet has been fired at the border from either side of India and China in last many years,” said Parrikar, who was speaking here after releasing the Marathi version of journalist-author Nitin Gokhale’s book on Siachen. Meanwhile, the Defence Minister described the Indian Army as one of the best forces in the world with “highest morality, standards, capabilities and trainings”. “When some area is given to Army for protection from insurgency, the Army will be able to control it by firing straight and cannot keep their hands tied at their back,” Parrikar said. Stating that the Army does not indulge in brutality, he added, “We do not kill someone just for the sake of killing.” “Though it is one of the best forces in the world, it needs equal support from the people of the country,” he said, adding, “if anybody talks against the force, do not indulge in a physical fight with him, but just say bugger off.” Terming America as a mighty nation, Parrikar said, “The US has not faced any border conflict and it is because they have might and India also should look to grow economically along with a focus to increase its might.”

America’s frankensteins

I

nternational terrorism became a prominent issue in the late 1960s, when hijacking became a favoured tactic. In 1968, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine hijacked an an El Al Flight. Twenty years later, the bombing of a Pan Am flight over Lockerbie, Scotland, shocked the world. And on September 11,2011 the world watched in shock and horror as the world famous Twin Towers, the symbol of American capitalism, were attacked by two Pan Am jet planes hijacked by Al Qaeda suicide squads. The attacks on the Twin Towers probably changed America when the very foundations of its pride and security were devastated on that black day known as 9/11. However, it would be ignoring facts if the anger against terrorism of the Islamic kind, failed to understand how this evolved. Gore Vidal famously referred to the USA as the United States of Amnesia. The late Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai put it a little more delicately, quipping, “One of the delightful things about Americans is that they have absolutely no historical memory.” Where did militant Salafi groups like ISIS and al-Qaida come from? The answer is not as complicated as many make it out to be - but, to understand it, the history of the Cold War we must be revisited when history lied about it in the West. Islamic Jihad which had been hibernating during the last 400 years, was revived with the help of the US in the 1980s against the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan. The US which described USSR as the “evil empire” felt justified to arm, abet and promote the jihad of one billion muslims against the USSR. Billions of dollars were pumped to fund the Taliban with the help of Osama Bin Laden and Pakistan’s ISI against the USSR. The US described the Talibans as “freedom fighters” and who ironically went on to become the forefathers of ISIS and al-Qaida. When the last Soviet troops were withdrawn in 1989, the mujahedin did not simply leave. The Taliban came out on top, and established a medieval theocratic regime to replace the former “godless” socialist government. Bin Laden then turned against the US for keeping its troops in Saudi Arabia after the war against Saddam Hussein. America invaded Iraq for oil but under the plea of getting rid of Weapons of Mass Destruction(WMD) a wonderful theory coined by US president George Bush. After deposing Saddam Hussein the US introduced western democracy and installed unpopular regimes headed by Shias which the majority Sunnis resented. The ISIS was birthed out of the anger felt by Sunnis against American occupation force and it spread to other parts and today the terror outfit is one of the most potentially dangerous and also wealthiest. Western imperialism has a tendency to create its own enemies. An article in a US newspaper pointed out that until the 1990 Gulf War, throughout the Iran-Iraq War that consumed the 1980s, the U.S. supported Saddam Hussein- the very same dictator it would violently depose in 2003. The report revealed that d show how the U.S. government helped Hussein when he was unleashing chemical weapons on Iranian civilians. The greatest irony is that America has been responsible for creating many terror outfits to fight against those who do not toe its line and the Frankenstein it created, today threatens the entire free world.

Jesus did not commit Himself to them…, for He knew what was in man. —John 2:24-25 Disillusionment means having no more misconceptions, false impressions, and false judgments in life; it means being free from these deceptions. However, though no longer deceived, our experience of disillusionment may actually leave us cynical and overly critical in our judgment of others. But the disillusionment that comes from God brings us to the point where we see people as they really are, yet without any cynicism or any stinging and bitter criticism. Many of the things in life that inflict the greatest injury, grief, or pain, stem from the fact that we suffer from illusions. We are not true to one another as facts, seeing each other as we really are; we are only true to our misconceived ideas of one another. According to our thinking, everything is either delightful and good, or it is evil, malicious, and cowardly. Refusing to be disillusioned is the cause of much of the suffering of human life. And this is how that suffering happens— if we love someone, but do not love God, we demand total perfection and righteousness from that person, and when we do not get it we become cruel and vindictive; yet we are demanding of a human being something which he or she cannot possibly give. There is only one Being who can completely satisfy to the absolute depth of the hurting human heart, and that is the Lord Jesus Christ. Our Lord is so obviously uncompromising with regard to every human relationship because He knows that every relationship that is not based on faithfulness to Himself will end in disaster. Our Lord trusted no one, and never placed His faith in people, yet He was never suspicious or bitter. Our Lord’s confidence in God, and in what God’s grace could do for anyone, was so perfect that He never despaired, never giving up hope for any person. If our trust is placed in human beings, we will end up despairing of everyone.

Bible and fashion

ashions as shown in TV, pictures, magazines and internets are influencing the young people in an unprecedented measure. The influence is inevitable as it affects the way the society dress, live, think and talk. Many popular stars whether in film/music industry or sports arenas are the major influence upon the younger generation. The way they dress and act makes young people want to replicate them. For the rich, they can afford to keep up with contemporary trends but for the poor, it’s a different story. There arise tons of discrepancies even in the outfits they put on. People tend to judge based on makeup and clothes. It is this that makes the society developed unhealthy complexes. With the influence of Western style of dressing, the decency of showing oneself in public is also a diminishing trait. Of course, there can be no restrictions in the way a person dresses or carries oneself. This is a free world but the manner in which a person portrays oneself speaks a lot about him/her. Fashion plays a major role in Churches and social gatherings as well. There are instances where young folks fail to attend churches because of not possessing fashionable clothes. Fashion seems to be the defining factor even in worshipping God. Many Churches today have turned into fashion spectacles and in displaying the latest clothes available in markets. The materialistic outlook into perceiving people cannot simply be evaded. Many times our first impression upon people is based on their outfits. It does not necessarily mean that one need to be shabbily clad but that there should be a proper way in restricting oneself from portraying more than our

W

finances can afford. Having said that, decency in dressing particularly in Churches should be upheld as it distracts the whole atmosphere of godliness and courtesy. The other day, I was reading through an article “Modesty, Clothing and God” by Brent Riggs and he has to say this: “Your clothing sends a message. It can be one of materialism, pride or “look at me.” It can be one of sexuality and provocativeness. Or, it can be a message of godliness, propriety and modesty. Modesty attracts righteousness. Immodesty attracts immorality. The world uses clothing to say “look at me!” Christians should wear clothes that say “look at God!” What a word in the context of all the immodest unrestricted style of Western culture and living. The Bible is not silent on this issue. Many tend to become judgmental and uncomfortable when big-mouthed preachers pounds for proper style of dressing within the Church setting. I am not in a position to judge ‘what to wear’ and ‘what not to.’ There are some instances in the Bible that is mentioned. The bible says that clothing was first made by men (inclusive) sewed with fig leaves and they covered themselves with it. But God made garments of skin for men and clothed them. I propose that the clothing we wear matters to God. If it were not, he would not have cared to shed blood as such to cover the nakedness of men. Now, many are aware of the fact that the Lord do not see as men sees, for men look at the outward appearance but God look at the heart (1 Sam. 16:7). However, this does not suggest that God does not care about the way we dress. In reality, proper cladding is mentioned all over the Bible

because it expresses what’s inside us. In the book of James 2, the Church began to set distinction between rich and poor based on the looks and attires of their members. Clothing reveals sorrow (2 Sam. 3:31). It can also help people identify to which group or tribe they belong to (Zeph. 1:8). Prisoners can be spotted by their dress (Jer. 52:33). Some dress may reveal specific activity, such as having attended a wedding (Matt. 22:1ff). The quality of dress also reveals how well a mother has provided for her family (Proverbs 31:21, 22). Clothing can also reveal a harlot (Prov. 7:10). In all these, clothing discloses people’s identity and disposition. Therefore, proper dressing especially in Churches should be emphasized so that there can be a proper attitude in worshipping God. 1 Timothy 2:9, 10 commands the ladies in this manner: “And I want women to get in there with the men in humility before God, not primping before a mirror or chasing the latest fashions but doing something beautiful for God and becoming beautiful doing it” (Message Bible). The Bible has to say that if the inward relation to God is right, then the outward expression of apparel and persona will fall in its place. With the change of times and seasons, fashions too is changing rapidly. God does not in any way controls believers from exercising the right on the styles of clothing. But it does command believers to dress modestly and courteously in the worship place. “Modesty isn’t about a list of rules. It’s about reflecting God’s holiness and purity through our clothing,” states Mechelle Cato. Vebu Khamo, Bible Student

Legitimate rights of the aggrieved 13 Naga tribes for lingual status

T

he most important tool of communication is language but the quality of language depends on the natives how they developed and promote their dialectical form of communication into language. This is because; every popular language the world over today had gone through defining and refining through the test of time by the eminent intellectuals and this we called standard medium of communication. Therefore, technically speaking certain prerequisite criteria becomes a must for a dialect to be promulgated into language that inclusive of; 1.Consistency of grammatical structure of a particular tribal language. 2. Concistancy of phoneme and phonemic structures of words for word. 3. Syllabification of script inclined to the local dialect especially, impromptu script from the roman if at all we have to apply this very script for all the time to come. 4. Defining intonation for similar words and fundamental pronunciation. 5. Constituted dictionary approved by respective tribal literature committee. 6. Having sufficient study materials or the possibility of acquiring in its own dialect. The 13 aggrieved Naga tribes literature meeting was held at Zonal Council hall Kohima on the 21st July 2016 where I was the only one from Zeme literature committee representing Zeme of North East India, the three states of Nagaland, Assam and Manipur beside the LO Mr.Pauleu (In-service), the meeting was congenial and impressive with its pro-tem chairman Dr. Ditsolo Kapfo who minutely explained our legitimate rights and the reflection of the state govt. and the nuance of our grievances, where it was conclusively decided to appeal the state govt. of Nagaland in more pragmatic approach as to come to a logistical conclusion. Nevertheless, the present heartburning issue raised by the 13 aggrieved tribes cannot be easily brushed aside on the excuse of financial constrain as was indicated by the state govt. in its reply to the first memorandum when the other four major tribes namely Ao, Angami, Lotha and Sumi are enjoying the privilege of language status for that long, imparting M.I.L. in their own mother tongues. Whereas, the rest of the 13 tribes had been systematically kept in abeyant for that long despite of several reminder to the state govt. of Nagaland which in other word is akin to “Until the child cried hoarse no appeasement comes” is not in the best interest and taste of the Naga public. However, this doesn’t means the 13 tribes are against the aforementioned four tribes but asking for our legitimate rights only. Wherein, the aggrieved 13 tribes also should understand that the four tribes had gone through the procedural criteria

New dimensions of online and ATM card frauds

ith reference to the news item ‘NE sates reeling under grip of ATM fraud’(Nagaland Post 28/07/16), I would like to share one of my experience with the readers so that people could be aware of the new varieties of online frauds taking place around us. Few months back when I was in my home town a person with North Indian accent called me from a mobile and introduced himself as an executive of a reputed bank’s Debit Cards division. He narrated my name, email id and the complete address of my previous rented house at Thiruvananthapuram where I stayed before three years and informed that they intend to issue a new Debit Card against my old card. He asked my debit card number for verification and I

refused to divulge it and asked, “What is the need of giving card number if you are from the banks debit cards division?” He replied that he was asking it only for the purpose of verification and that is why he didn’t ask any other information such as PIN number or other personal details. He also told that I might be aware that it is not possible to misuse debit card without PIN number. I hesitated to give him the details and told that the card was not with me at that time. Again, he called me the next day and informed that they wanted to dispatch the card that day itself due to the annual closing and asked the old card number and my present address for sending the new card. He appreciated my precaution and assured again that misuse of Debit Card without PIN number is

not at all possible. This time his words convinced me and I gave him my Debit Card No & Address. Within few seconds I received an SMS in my mob stating that my new Debit Card has been dispatched through Speed Post. He then informed me that the reward points in my previous card was used and advised me to use it for doing online purchases. He told that he will send an SMS with the details of the reward points accumulated in my account. Immediately I got an SMS from my bank that contained One Time Password for paying Rs.9797.00 to EBAY from my debit card number given to him. I realized that it was an attempt to cheat me and got alert. He now more politely asked me to the ‘Code Number’ given at the end of the SMS so that he can credit the

reward points for the new card in my account. I asked him why should I pay Rs.9,797/- to EBAY where as I have not made any online purchase and warned him of Police action for his cheating act. He now blackmailed me that they will cancel my all my debit cards and also impose a penalty of Rs.2, 700/- from my account as cancellation charge of the new card issued. As a precaution, I immediately blocked my Debit Card and luckily I have not suffered any loss. Immediately I lodged a Police Complaint at the local Police Station and also with the Commissioner of Police at Thiruvananthapuram because this group might have cheated a good number of public as the way they speak is same as that of Call Centre Executives and one may easily fall prey to

as stated here and on fulfilling they have come to this extent so also we should also do our parts likewise. Invariably, in confluence with the Indian national policy of promoting M.I.L. and in tune with our legitimate rights, the state govt. should come up with pragmatic solution in the greater interest of all the stakeholders of the Nagas. More so, fund constrain shouldn’t be the main hindrance factor, for it is the wellknown fact that such an entity comes under the Ministry of human resource and development where the financial workout will not be a big problem if our decision makers have the gut and commitments. Therefore, the following points and criteria may be substantiated if at all, all the Nagas’ diaclects are to be scheduled into language status; 1.The feasibility of study’s material in own tribal language up to graduation. 2.Whether there exist substantiated dictionaries and grammatical structures and own language and any other existing published genre of book in own dialect approved by the respective literature committee. 3.Whether the application of our impromptu script derived from the roman script is competent enough to maneuver all the intricate nuance of the tribal dialects. 4.Whether uniform write up story, genre will be translated into all the tribes’ dialect or to be independently source out by each tribe according to their liking or whether N.U. has to undertake the responsibilities. 5.Whether to enforce the linguistic subject only within that tribe’s jurisdiction if so subject teachers be appointed in all the high-school, higher secondary schools and colleges from that community only with qualified personals. Whereas, if it has to be taught to all it tribal students elsewhere such as St. Joseph college it will be necessary to appoint 13+4=17 subject teachers which could lead to technical problems. No wonder, this write up is purely my personal opinion and has nothing to do with the newly form forum “Naga tribal literature board” and should there be any abrasively overtone expression I am always ready to own up the responsibilities and join the mainstream as a bona fide member. propos to the statement published in the Nagaland Post on July 30, 2016 under the caption, ‘DDADU refutes election of new president; sets election date’ in the state column at page No, 2 by self styled DDADU president, Hokaito Zhimo, terming the “proclamation made by the so called election commissioner Vikato Assumi as rubbish.” In this connection the undersigne hereby clarify that the statement made by the so called self styled president DDADU Hokaito Zhimo has no authority nor legal sanctity to issue and publish any press release in the name of DDADU in the media, since he is no more the president of DDADU as his tenure has already been expired on July 17, 2016. The undersigned is constrained to make this clarification in the form of rejoinder in order to clarify and made public so that the laymen may know the truth. That on 16/07/2016 Hokaito Zhimo had requested the local daily editors to publish in the local daily conveying to convene executive meeting on 17/07/2016 at 2 p.m. at DDADU head office, the same was published in the Nagaland Post in news in brief column at page no. 2 on July 17, 2016 under the caption ‘DDADUD executive

meeting’. Accordingly as slated/ scheduled the executive member, office bearers and advisors of DDADU gathered at the head office on July 17, at 2 p.m. The meeting was chaired/ presided over by the then president (DDADU) Hokaito Zhimo. Wherein in the meeting Hokaito Zhimo had declared DDADU presidential election for the term 2016-2019 as his term in office expires on 17 July 2016. He also proposed to setup and election commission for the ensuing Presidential election. While in process of selecting the election commission, he suggested that the member of the election commission should be represented by different tribes. Accordingly, the election commission was setup as suggested by him with Vikato Assumi as chief election commissioner, B. Meren Jamir and Renthungo Tsopoe as Asst. Commissioner. After the constitution of the election commission Hokaito Zhimo endorsed and entrusted the election commission to process and conduct for presidential election as his term as already expired. As approved and endorsed by the executive council in the meeting, the election commission proceeded with the process of presidential

It is further stated that the statements made above in the rejoinder is supported by documentary/CD proof which shall be made available to the public if so required. T h e r e f o r e, H o k a i t o Zhimo is hereby warned not to act in a similar manner in misleading the mass in the near future. Vikato Assumi, Chief Election Commissioner, DDADU, Dimapur

their cheating tactics. But so far I have not heard anything from the Kerala Police about the action taken in this regard. May be they are too busy with the infamous scandals and may act only after a person got cheated in terms of lakhs and crores. I traced the mobile number of the caller and found that it was from New Delhi. I suspect that this is the work of a well organized group and the involvement of few black sheep from the bank’s cards division or some insurance companies cannot be ruled out as they were in possession of my detailed previous address at Thiruvananthapuram where I resided before 3 years. Moreover, I have not recorded the address of the rented house anywhere except for applying an ATM card from my bank and for obtaining Health In-

surance from an insurance company. With the development of smart phone technology and the enormous increase in number of users using different APPs we became vulnerable to privacy intrusion and people getting access to our personal data becomes easy than earlier. Therefore, we should be more cautious while receiving calls from unknown persons and should never reveal crucial data such as Passwords, PIN Number etc under any circumstances. The law enforcing agencies should use the expertise of the Cyber Cell to bring the culprits under the clutches of law before many innocent people loss their hard earned money to the new breed of unscrupulous educated gang members. Reader’s Post

Sir,

District for Tseminyu a necessity

The Government of Nagaland had and has no problem to upgrade Tseminyu sub division into a district for the Rengmas. The essential elements of state comprise population or people, territory, government and sovereignty. Thus a state of a sovereign state should have the first three essential elements to be officially called a state. But, population and territory come first and government and sovereignty next. That means that if there are population and territory there can be a state and thus states were born in old era. A district is called a state within a state and hence a district too has the same essential elements like that of the state. So there is no reason as to why a district cannot be created for indigenous Rengma community which has considerable and sizeable population and territory. The human rights of indigenous people are recognized and honored on the basis of their population and territory everywhere in the world.Other districts in Nagaland were also created because the government had recognized and honored the human rights of indigenous people and the territories being occupied by them. If the Rengmas have been denied upgradation of Tseminyu, the oldest sub division into a district on the ground that they have only one assembly constituency and that there should be minimum two assembly constituencies for the same. Then this artificial criterion just sounds like two men are eating on the same plate, so they ask for a bigger plate, but, they were denied on the ground that they have only one plate. This criterion is arbitrary and discriminatory in nature. Moreover, no proper uniform population was maintained for each tribal assembly constituency for which Tseminyu A/C has become the largest single tribe’s assembly constituency nearly equivalent to some three assembly constituencies in term of population. Thus it is obvious that they have been denied their rightful share in the process of peoples’ representation. People and territory are the creation of God and to have freedom is the birthright of every human while assembly constituency is the creation of man. And when we refer the right to have assembly constituency and district we mean our right to access to political and economic freedoms provided to the citizens under an established democracy. And the rights to have equal share of representation and economic freedom have been denied to the Rengmas since the inception of Nagaland statehood. Why should the Rengmas be continuously subjected to discrimination. Up gradation of Tseminyu sub division headed by ADC into a district has long been the desire of Rengma people. The demand for creation of district for the Rengmas led by the Rengma Hoho is genuine and there is every possibility on the part of the government. Therefore, the government of Nagaland must do justice to the deserving Rengma people for the sake of welfare politics and Christianity. K Thong (Achilo)

Mahadayi protests hits normal life in Karnataka

Various organisations including farmers protest by burning tires and declaring a state-wide bandh over the Mahadayi water sharing dispute in Hubbali in Karnataka on Saturday. (PTI) BENGALURU, JUL 30 (PTI): A 12-hour shutdown called by pro-Kannada organisations to protest the Mahadayi Water Dispute Tribunal’s interim order rejecting the state’s petition seeking 7.56 tmcft for drinking water projects today threw normal life out of gear in most parts of the state. T h e d aw n - t o - d u s k bandh evoked good response in north Karnataka, where the Mahadayi had been a burning issue for the last several months, with streets wearing almost a deserted look as business establishments remained closed and public transport kept off the roads. For residents of Benga-

luru, it was a day of hardship for the fifth consecutive day, as they suffered for the first three days with a transport strike and the next day had to brave flooding in various parts of the city, caused due to copious rainfall. The bandh only added to their woes. Overcrowded and busy major bus stations, including Majestic and Shivajinagar wore a deserted look, putting commuters to hardship, while metro services were also shut. Taking advantage of the commuters’ plight some private vehicles fleeced them, demanding hefty fares. Most business centres, work and market places also wore a deserted look.

Banks, cinema halls and malls remained closed. Educational institutes had declared a holiday in most parts of the state. In the morning, the protestors, including personalities from the Kannada film industry launched a massive protest march from Town Hall Circle to Freedom park via Hudson Circle, KG Road and palace Road. Noted film actors Shivaraj Kumar, Ramesh and Srinath took part in the protest as their vehicles wound through the over-crowded route all the way to Freedom Park. Before launching the protest march, Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce

President Sa Ra Govindu urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and work for an out-of-the-court settlement by convening a meeting between Chief Ministers of the states at loggerheads. Earlier, members of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, who tried to enter the Raj Bhavan and later some other protestors also were detained for trying to ransack Namma Metro. Karnataka, which has locked horns with neighbouring Goa on the larger issue of sharing Mahadayi River water between both states, had petitioned the tribunal seeking the release of 7.56 tmcft for Kalasa-Banduri Nala project. The tribunal, which gave its interim order on Wednesday after hearing arguments from both states, had rejected the state’s plea citing various grounds including ecological damage that the project may cause. The Kalasa—Banduri Nala (diversion) project, which will utilise 7.56 tmcft of water from the inter-state Mahadayi River, is being undertaken by Karnataka to improve drinking water supply to the twin cities of HubballiDharwad and the districts of Belagavi and Gadag in north Karnataka. A total bandh was witnessed in Hubballi-Dharwad, Navalgund, Nargund and Gadag. Police resorted to laticharge in Yamnur village in Hubbali-Dharwad district to disperse the protestors, which evoked strong condemnation from the Opposition parties for alleged excess. The protests remained peaceful throughout the state.

29 killed in lightning strikes in Odisha

Uttarakhand BJP leader accused of rape; party cries conspiracy

BHUBANESWAR, JUL 30 (PTI): At least 29 people were killed after being struck by lightning in different parts of Odisha today, police said. While the maximum number of eight deaths were reported from Bhadrak district, there were seven casualties in Balasore district, five in Khurda, three in Mayurbhanj, three in Jajpur and one each in Kendrapara, Keonjhar and Nayagarh, police said. Expressing sorrow over the deaths, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik directed the special relief commissioner (SRC) to immediately provide assistance to the bereaved families in accordance with the relief code, CM’s office said in a statement. Of the eight deaths reported from Bhadrak, two women died in separate lightning incidents at Kusananagar and Panibhandar villages under Bhadrak rural area, police said, adding another woman was killed in Balichaturi village. The rest five died at Bisalpata, Banta, Tihidi, Bansada and Chandbali areas of Bhadrak district, they said, adding at least three persons were injured in incidents of lightning in the district. In Balasore district, two persons were killed and another injured at Angula village, while one person was killed in lightning at nearby Jaganathpur village in Soro block, said Priyabrata Parhi, Tahasildar of Soro. The mishap occurred while all of them were engaged in paddy field. Elsewhere in the district, four persons, including a woman, were killed and at least 14 injured in different areas under Jaleswar block, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Jaleswar, Satya Ranjan Mallick said. Most of them were working in paddy field.

NEW DELHI/DEHRADUN, JUL 30 (PTI): BJP Saturday sniffed a conspiracy after a rape case was filed against Harak Singh Rawat by a woman who claimed the party leader from Uttarakhand sexually assaulted her at his Delhi residence, saying his “vocal style of politics” may have prompted adversaries to falsely implicate him. Rawat, 55, was disqualified as a legislator along with eight Congress MLAs after they revolted against Uttarakhand’s Harish Rawat government. The FIR against Rawat was registered at the Safdarjung police station following a complaint by the woman who alleged that the former minister raped her at his residence in the posh Green Park area yesterday, a senior police officer said. The complainant has claimed that she was raped by Rawat at his residence at around 2.30 PM but she reported the matter to police

Kerala Police officer drags media personnel to police station; suspended

KOZHIKODE/THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JUL 30 (IANS): A Kerala Police officer who forcibly took away four media persons attached to Asianet TV channel from a magistrate’s court to a police station in Kozhikode has been suspended for misconduct. Sub Inspector P.M. Vimod was suspended by state police chief Loknath Behra.

“This should not have happened. I am sad,” said Behra to reporters in the state capital, announcing the suspension of the police official. An official probe into the incident has been ordered. Trouble started in the morning when Vimod allegedly manhandled the media persons who had entered the magistrate court premises

to cover the day’s important cases. He then forcibly took them away to the Town Police Station, adding to the already tense relations between the lawyers community and media persons in Kerala. The police official said the Kozhikode district judge had asked the police to remove the media personnel from the court premises, but later the Kerala High Court got a clarification from the

district judge that the latter had not asked for any ban of the media. The High Court registrar general Ashok Menon on Saturday evening issued a press statement stating that there has been no ban imposed on journalists from attending and reporting court proceedings. Following a huge media outcry, the four Asianet TV officials were allowed to

leave the station and a senior official attached to the Town Police apologised for the turn of events. However, when the Asianet media personnel came to the police station to take back their broadcast vehicle which was taken by the police in the morning, Vimod dragged the media professionals into the police station and threatened them with action.

late last night, sources said. The woman today reiterated her allegations in a statement recorded by a magistrate under Section 164 of the CrPC. This was not the first time the woman has alleged rape by Rawat. In 2003, she had accused Rawat of fathering her son. She had registered a case against him in Dehradun, following which he had to step down as minister in the then Congress government in Uttarakhand, the sources said. Rawat, however, was given a clean chit in the 2003 case by the CBI. In 2014, a case of molestation was also lodged against him but the woman had subsequently withdrawn her complaint. BJP Saturday defended Rawat, contending that his vocal politics may have prompted his adversaries to lodge the case. “Harak Singh ji has an extremely vocal style

of politics due to which he is constantly in the limelight. This may have made his political adversaries come up with a ‘made-up’ case,” Uttarakhand BJP spokesman Munna Singh Chauhan told reporters. Chauhan said that the police should be allowed to investigate the case, though he hinted at a conspiracy. “We don’t have the details of the case yet, police should be allowed to investigate the case and law should take its course. But the possibility of a conspiracy behind this cannot be ruled out. Earlier also similar complaints involving women have been lodged against him but in each case he either got a clean chit or the complainant later withdrew,” he said. Rawat was among the nine Congress MLAs who had revolted against Congress’ government in the state assembly on March 18. He is now with BJP along with the rest of the rebel MLAs.

Tacit understanding with BJP Karna CM’s son dies earns hoarders Rs.2.5 lakh crore in Belgium; leaders

NE W DE LHI, JUL 30 (AGENCIES): The Congress on Friday alleged that business houses and hoarders had made Rs 2.5 lakh crore by artificially inflating the prices of pulses with tacit support from BJP governments in the states and at the Centre. ABP News Bureau and The Telegraph Kolkata, in their Friday report said the accusation comes a day after party vice-president Rahul Gandhi hinted at a scam behind the rising prices of pulses. “A few corporate houses, import cartels and hoarders looted Rs 2.5 lakh crore in the last 15 months,” Congress communications chief Randeep Surjewala told a news conference. “The directorate of revenue intelligence and the Intelligence Bureau have full knowledge. We want an answer from the Prime Minister why no action was taken.” Surjewala then explained the calculations behind the allegation. “The MSP (minimum support price) of pulses produced in India varies between Rs 45 and Rs 50 per kg. Even if a processing fee of Rs 5 per kg, transportation charges of Rs 5 per kg and 10 per cent profit (Rs 5 per kg) are added, the sale price does not go

above Rs 65 per kg. But the government allowed pulses to be sold for around Rs 150 to Rs 200 per kg,” he said. “Similarly, the average price of imported pulses in 2013-14 was Rs 34.73 per kg when the market price under UPA was around Rs 70 per kg. In 2014-15, the import price was Rs 37.32 per kg and in 2015-16, it was Rs 41.80 per kg. An impression was created that the prices had soared because the imported pulses were costly. But the daylight robbery is clearly discernible.” Surjewala said the figure of Rs 2.5 lakh crore was based on the consumption figure of around 23 million tonnes of pulses annually, which means the Congress is alleging a “robbery” of about Rs 110 per kilogram. “Profiteering of Rs 85/90 per kg is writ large,” he said, adding that there could be about a dozen private parties who “did this robbery”. He suggested the decision by many state governments, particularly those of (BJP-ruled) Gujarat and Maharashtra, not to extend the dates of the stock limits on pulses had facilitated hoarding.

condole death

BENGALURU/NEW DELHI, JUL 30 (IANS): Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s son, Rakesh Siddaramaiah, died of multiorgan failure at a hospital in Belgium on Saturday, official sources said. PATNA, JUL 30 (IANS): Following pressure from its main ally RJD chief Lalu Prasad, the Bihar government led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday took a U-turn by lifting the ban on the sale and consumption of toddy in the state. Bihar Excise and Prohibition Minister Abdul Jalil Mastan told media here that there will be no ban on sale and consumption of toddy in the state. “Ban on toddy has been lifted,” Mastan said. In April after Bihar imposed a total liquor ban in the state, it also banned the sale of ‘toddy’. But the decision to banned toddy was not lauded by Lalu Prasad and his party Rashtriya Janata Dal. According to RJD leaders here, Lalu was not in favour to ban toddy. “In last three and half months, Lalu has publicly expressed his displeasure over the government decision to ban toddy and urged the government to lift the ban and make it free as it was introduced during his tenure as Chief Minister in early 90s,” a leader close to Lalu said. Lalu Prasad as Chief Minister had declared toddy tax-free in Bihar to help people engaged in the business, particularly the ‘Pasi’ caste.

Facebook may face FOR SALE extra $5 bn tax bill PIGLET'S LAND FOR SALE London, Jul 30 (IANS):

Social media giant Facebook may be liable to pay $3 to $5 billion in extra tax after AUS Internal Revenue Service (IRS) investigated the way the company transferred assets to Ireland. IRS has been exploring how the tech company transferred assets to Ireland and whether it deliberately tried to minimise the tax it paid in the US, a report in the Guardian said. “The IRS issued the firm with a ‘statutory notice of deficiency’ on July 27, the company said in its quarterly financial filing, noting that it could have a ‘material adverse impact’ on its finances,” the report noted. Facebook broke out the possible loss in its earnings report, as a minimum of $3 billion and maximum of $5 billion. It would also be liable for interest lost, though any additional penalties are not known, the report added. A Facebook spokesperson on Friday defended by saying that “Facebook complies with all applicable rules and regulations in the countries where we operate.”

He said Karaikal port had paid as much as Rs 2,100 crore to the Central kitty in the last five years under central excise and custom duties. “But Puducherry government had netted only Rs 63 crore under sales tax and user charge”, Narayanasamy said. He said if Puducherry became part of the Central Finance Commission, the UT would be entitled to get bigger share. Narayanasamy said he had made out a strong case at the recent all India Finance Ministers conference that Puducherry be taken care of adequately in the event of the Goods and Services Act being brought into force. On the budget for the UT, he said he would present it as soon as the Finance Ministry’s nod was available to the needs of Puducherry for the 2016-17 fiscal.

recapitalisation of 13 public sector banks during 2016-17. The capital infusion exercise for the current year is based on an assessment of need as calculated from the compounded annual growth rate of credit for the last five years, banks’ projections of credit growth and an objective assessment of the growth potential of each public sector bank. Following this assessment, 75 per cent of the amount collected for each bank is being released now to provide liquidity support for lending operations as also to enable banks to raise funds from the market, the Finance Ministry had said.

one per cent additional manufacturing tax on inter-state sales increased the chances of GST getting passed, which boosted investors’ sentiments. On the global front, the markets traded higher after Japan unveiled a huge stimulus package to spur its economy. “Global cues were also positive owing to the expectation of stimulus by global central banks, including BoJ (Bank of Japan),” Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit BNP Paribas, said. Similarly, the US Fed’s recent decision at the FOMC (Federal Open Market Committee) meet to keep rates unchanged also supported the bulls. However, negative bias was partly infused after the BoJ decided to increase purchases of ETFs (exchange traded funds), but kept interest rates steady on Friday. Moreover, the Indian markets traded with blended sentiments during the week on the back of July derivatives expiry. The positive momentum noticed in the markets was mostly due to sustained foreign fund inflows and on optimism that global central banks will remain supportive of growth. According to Pankaj Sharma, Head of Equities, Equirus Securities, almost 70 per cent of net purchasing by FIIs in calendar year 2016 has happened in July.

New Delhi, Jul 30 (PTI): Gold prices spurted to Rs 31,340 per 10 grams, a 29-month high, by surging Rs 540 in the bullion market today, tracking a firm trend overseas amid increased buying by jewellers at the domestic spot market. Silver ready took losses forward on easing demand from coin makers and lost another Rs 220 to Rs 47,080 per kg, while silver week-based delivery recovered by Rs 680 to Rs 47,480 on speculative buying. Bullion traders said sentiment bolstered after gold gained overseas as the dollar weakened and the US economy grew lessthan-expected in the second quarter, boosting demand for safe-haven assets. Globally, gold rose 1.2 per cent to USD 1,357.50 an ounce in New York yesterday. Prices have climbed 2.8 per cent this month. Besides, persistent buying by jewellers following pick up in demand for ornaments at domestic spot market, supported the upside, they said.

On being asked if Rs 7,575 crore earmarked for the country’s largest lender, SBI, by the Finance Ministry for recapitalisation was enough, she told IANS, “All capital depends upon growth, profitability, provision requirements, which change from quarter to quarter. There are several scenarios. We have discussed with the financial services department our requirement.” The Finance Ministry on July 19 had announced the much-awaited capital infusion of Rs 22,915 crore towards the

Mumbai, Jul 30 (IANS): Indian equity markets were buoyed by positive anticipation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Bill clearing parliament, supported by a perceptible inflow of foreign funds, and continued to accumulate profits during the week ended Friday. The two key equity indices -- the sensitive index (Sensex) of the BSE and the Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) -- gained around one per cent each, even though they ended in the red on the last day of trade. The 30-scrip Sensex made significant gains during the week as it surged 248.62 points or 0.89 per cent to 28,051.86 points. The wider 51-scrip NSE Nifty also closed higher. It rose to 8,638.50 points -- up 97.30 points or 1.14 per cent. “Buoyed by positive developments in parliament with regard to the passage of the GST bill, participants turned buyers in the market,” Brijesh Ved, Senior Portfolio Manager, BNP Paribas AMC, said. “The current rally in the Indian markets seems to be largely fuelled by liquidity and buying by foreign investors.” The benchmark indices started off the trading week on a higher note, keeping an eye on the progress of the GST bill issue in parliament. New Delhi, Jul 30 (IANS): SBI Chairperson Arundhati Bhattacharya has said that there is no reason for the bank employees to be apprehensive of the upcoming mergers as there will be no losses of jobs or salaries in the process. “There are no losses of jobs or salary. There only might be a few transfers, that’s it. There is no reason for strike,” Bhattarcharya told IANS on Friday evening. “They are apprehensive of change,” she added. Even as bank employees struck work on Friday on the issue, Bhattacharya said the process of the merger of five associate banks and Bhartiya Mahila Bank with the SBI should be over by next March. “Timeline (for the merger) is around by the end of the financial year,” she said. Banking operations across the country were hit on Friday as nearly a million employees of private and state-run banks struck work for a day to protest the proposed merger with SBI and the privatisation of the IDBI Bank. US presidential nominees continue their war of words

Washington, Jul 30 (PTI): Asserting that the US is the “best-placed” country in the world to seize the future, Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton has attacked her Republican rival Donald Trump for running a negative campaign as she embarked on a bus tour with her running mate. “Donald Tr ump says America is weak, that we’re in decline. Well, all I can tell you is, we are the best-placed country in the world to seize the future,” she said in Hatfield, Pennsylvania, launching a three-day bus tour with her vice presidential running mate Tim Kaine in the swing states of Pennsylvania and Ohio. 68-year-old Clinton, who has been the secretary of state, first lady and senator, said her campaign is build on positive energy and alleged that Trump’s campaign reflects negativity. “And if you’re looking for a kind of pessimistic, downbeat vision of America, we’re not your folks. We do not buy into that dark, divisive image that was presented at the Republican convention last week,” said Clinton, who is the first woman presidential candidate of a major political party. In her maiden public appearance after officially accepting the presidential nomination of the party in Philadelphia at the party convention yesterday, Clinton questioned Trump’s

claims on jobs creation and economy. “Donald Trump goes around with that hat on, ‘Make America Great Again’. Everything he makes he makes somewhere else besides America. The only thing he makes in America are bankruptcies...,” he said. “And it really is shocking. I didn’t know any of this before he became the leading Republican candidate. But then I started running into people who told me stories,” she said and and listed out some of the stories about Trump. “I tell you those stories because if someone runs for president and says their primary qualification for being president is because they claim to be a successful businessman, then it’s only fair to ask, how did you become successful? We don’t resent success in America. But we do resent people who take advantage of others in order to line their own pockets on the way up,” Clinton said. Donald Trump: Trashing his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton’s speech as “average”, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has said that he was taking the gloves off and he will be no more “Mr Nice Guy.” “It’s interesting, every time I mention her, everyone screams ‘lock her up,’ and you know what? I’ve been nice but after that performance last night, I don’t have to be so nice anymore. I’m taking the gloves off,” Trump told his

supporters at an election rally in Colorado. Making his first public appearance a day after Clinton delivered her acceptance speech to become the presidential nominee of the Democratic party, Trump said there will be “no more Mr Nice guy” in the race to the White House. One of the two (Trump and Clinton) winners of the November general elections would be sworn in as the next president of the United States on January 20, 2017. “You know what I’ve been saying? I’ve been saying, let’s just beat her in November. But you know what? You know what? I’m starting to agree with you,” he said. Tr u m p s a i d C l i n t o n should have congratulated him in her acceptance speech in Philadelphia. The billionaire from New York said he watched Clinton’s speech out of curiosity. “I was curious to see whether she would do a class act and not mention my name or mention it with respect,” Trump said and then he imitated Clinton. “I would like to congratulate my Republican opponent for having something that nobody has ever done in the history of politics in this nation. And I would like to congratulate my opponent for having gotten more votes than anybody in the history of the Republican Party in the primary season,” Trump said imitating his Democratic rival.

Xi Jinping pushes for harder training of troops

26 killed as floods hit van in Pak

Beijing, Jul 30 (PTI): Undergoing radical transformation to increase its combat capability amid rising tensions over the disputed South China Sea, President Xi Jinping is pushing China’s 2.3 millionstrong PLA which turns 89 tomorrow to train hard to win wars as it expands its high tech arsenal. Reorganised from top to bottom by Xi in the last four years, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) - the world’s largest - is bracing for major showdowns in its increasingly volatile neighbourhood triggered by the international tribunal verdict quashing China’s expansive claims over the resource-rich South China Sea (SCS). Reform is a comprehensive and revolutionary change, and obstacles and policy issues that may hold back reform measures must be addressed so as to build a strong armed forces commensurate with China’s international status, Xi has said as he consolidated his hold over the military to emerge as the most powerful Chinese leader in recent times. Operating under the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC) unlike other militaries which function directly under governments, the PLA now enjoys a whopping over USD 145 billion annual budget, next only to the US military with whom it looks set for a confrontation in the SCS.

Xi Jinping Focusing his attention on the PLA the day he took power in 2013, Xi wanted the military to function under the command of the Party, increase its capability to win wars and operate in proper working style by weeding out corruption. Over 40 top commanders including two retired military chiefs faced investigation for corruption, which became rampant in the PLA with allegations of generals selling ranks for hefty bribes. On July 25, a Chinese court sentenced former military chief Guo Boxiong to life in prison for corruption. He was reported to have accepted bribes worth about USD 2.3 million mainly selling military ranks to highest bidders. Xi also carried out the biggest anti-corruption drive to cleanse the party in which thousands of officials have faced punishment.

Washington, Jul 30 (PTI): Expressing concern over reports of “rising intolerance and violence” in India, the US has asked the Indian government to do “everything in its power” to protect citizens and to bring to justice the perpetrators. Responding to questions on reports of alleged violence against people eating beef and assault on two Muslim women carrying buffalo meat in Madhya Pradesh, State Department Spokesman John Kirby said, “We stand in solidarity with the people and Government of India in supporting exercise of freedom of religion and expression and in confronting all forms of intolerance.” “We’re obviously concerned by reports of rising intolerance and violence...As we do in countries facing such problems around the world, we urge the government to do everything in its power to protect citizens and to hold the perpetrators accountable,” he said. Kirby said the US looks forward to continuing to work with the Indian people to realise their tolerant-inclusive vision, which is so deeply in the interests of both India and the US. In an instance of cow vigilantism earlier this week, two Muslim women who were carrying buffalo meat were assaulted by people at a railway station in Mandsaur on suspicion that it was beef in the presence of police which arrested the duo.

Karachi, Jul 30 (PTI): A 32-year-old Hindu doctor in Pakistan has been found dead under mysterious circumstances inside the Intensive Care Unit of a civil hospital in Karachi. Dr Anil Kumar was found dead inside the ICU of the surgical wing of the hospital where he was performing his duty, said Eidgah Station House Office (SHO) Naeemudin. Sri Lanka beat Australia in Pallekele

Sri Lankan team members celebrate their teams’ victory over Australia by 106 runs as Steve O’ Keefe leaves the field on day five of their first test cricket match in Pallekele. (AP/PTI)

Pa l l e k e l e , J u l 3 0 (Agencies): Sri Lanka finally ended a record ninthwicket partnership to defeat Australia by 106 runs in the first Test in Pallekele. A routine win looked on the cards for the hosts when Australia slumped to 157-8 but Peter Nevill and Steve O’Keefe then put together an epic stand. The duo added just four runs while batting for 29.4 overs, setting records in the

process for the slowest-scoring Test partnership in history and the most consecutive maidens faced (22). H oweve r, w i t h we t weather apparently on the horizon, Nevill (9) was eventually caught behind off Dhananjaya de Silva (1-12), who was armed with the second new ball, and Rangana Herath (5-54) bowled O’Keefe (4) to wrap up a famous 106-run win. Despite having led by 86

on first innings, Australia were chasing 268 to win after man of the match Kusal Mendis’ superlative innings of 176. The tourists began the final day on 83-3 and lost Adam Voges (12) in the eighth over of the day when he offered a return catch to Herath. Captain Steven Smith (55) and Mitchell Marsh (25) gave Australia some hope with a stand of 43, only to fall lbw to Herath in consecutive overs.

Kerber, Simona Halep set up Wimbledon rematch in Montreal

Angelique Kerber M O N T R EAL , J u l 3 0 (Agencies): Romania’s Simona Halep rallied for a 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 victory over Svetlana Kuznetsova on Friday to set up a semi-final showdown with Angelique Kerber at the WTA Montreal tournament. Halep, seeded fifth, will

have a chance to avenge her quarter-final Wimbledon defeat at the hands of Australian Open champion Kerber, who reached the final four in Montreal with an emphatic 6-2, 6-2 victory over teenager Daria Kasatinka. “It was very tough, I feel really tired now, she played very

well and she’s very strong so I knew it was going to be like this,” Halep said. “All I can say is that I’m very happy I could win against her, because we always have tough matches.” Once Halep shook off some early nerves, she was able to pressure the Russian veteran’s serve and was rewarded when Kuznetsova surrendered an early break in the second set with a double fault. Halep seized control for good with an early break in the third to keep alive her hopes improving on her runner-up finish in Canada last year -- when she retired from the final against Belinda Bencic with an illness. While Kerber encountered little resistance against Russia’s Kasatinka she said Halep wold be another matter. “It’s going to be tough,” Kerber said. “We’ve played a lot of good matches in the past.” In the day’s other quarter-finals, American Madison Keys took on Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Britain’s Johanna Konta faced Kristina Kucova, the Slovakian qualifier who ousted Canadian Eugenie Bouchard in the third round.

That made it 140-6 and Lakshan Sandakan (3-49) then caught and bowled Mitchell Starc (0) and trapped Nathan Lyon (8) lbw. The match l ooked as good as over, only for Nevill and O’Keefe, who was batting with a leg injury, to shut up shop. With an array of fielders camped out around the bat, the duo failed to score a run for 178 balls between overs 63 and 86. O’Keefe was handed a life when the umpire failed to see an inside edge off De Silva which was held at shortleg and then used a review to overturn an lbw decision that went against him despite his having hit the ball. But the rain failed to arrive and the Australia resistance was finally broken when Nevill slashed at a wide one from De Silva and was caught by Dinesh Chandimal. And a fantastic Test then came to end as Herath beat O’Keefe with a delivery that skidded on, giving the spinner match figures of 9-103. It was just Sri Lanka’s second Test win over Australia, who were beaten for the first time since Smith took over as Test captain. The Aussies will get a chance to bounce back when the second Test starts in Galle on Thursday.

Chennaiyin FC sign Hans Mulder Chennai, Jul 30 (Agencies): Hans Mulder has opted to join Chennaiyin FC for the third season of the Indian Super League (ISL) after spending the first editions with Delhi Dynamos. The former Real Zaragoza youth team player was currently plying his trade for Cacereno in Spanish third division. He played a total of 28 matches for the Dynamos and was one of their four captains last season where they managed to qualify for the knockout stages.Chennaiyin FC have so far retained the services of Eder Monteiro, Manuele Blasi, Bernard Mendy and Raphael Augusto from last season. Marco Materrazzi, Chennayin FC’s head coach expressed his delight on snapping up the midfielder’s services. “Mulder had two very consistent seasons in the ISL. We were keen to add his quality and experience in our midfield this year. So we are very happy to have signed him and believe in him to have another strong campaign,” said Materazzi.

Neymar to lead Brazil in Rio Games GIOANIA, Jul 30 (IANS): Barcelona forward Neymar will captain Brazil at the Rio 2016 Olympic football tournament, the team’s head coach said on Friday. The 24-year-old has led Brazil’s senior national team for the past two years but there was speculation he might be stripped of the skipper’s armband in Rio. Brazil coach Rogerio Micale said Neymar had “exceeded his expectations” after meeting him for the first time this week. “In relation to the captain, it’s going to be Neymar,” Micale told a press conference in Gioania on Friday. “He has exceeded my expectations in relation to his quality. He changes direction so quickly. In one-on-one he is in a different world. Within the group he is loved by everybody. A good guy, with a big heart in relation to his teammates, especially the younger ones.” Neymar has been widely lambasted in Brazil for regularly posting images of himself partying and posing with other celebrities on social media. His recent performances for Brazil have also been questioned, having received five red cards for ill-discipline in the past 18 months.

Everybody waiting for my debut: Zlatan London, Jul 30 (Agencies): Zlatan Ibrahimovic says Manchester United fans are every bit as excited as he is for his debut ahead of his first appearance for the club against Galatasaray in his native Sweden. The former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain man has been the most noteworthy acquisition of the transfer window thus far for United, who signed the classy striker on a free transfer from the French champions at the start of July. Ibrahimovic missed the first part of United’s preseason – a trip to China in which they only played one game, a 4-1 loss to Borussia Dortmund, as inclement weather saw the cancellation of their second against crosstown rivals Manchester City – but was included in Jose Mourinho’s squad for Saturday’s clash with Turkish giants Galatasaray. And with United fans starved of regular action thus far this pre-season and yet to see their new striker in action, Ibrahimovic says he can sense the excitement ahead of his non-competitive debut. “Everybody has been waiting for that moment,” he told MUTV. “There has been a lot of talk and to make my debut in my country will feel great. I think the fans are waiting for

Zlatan Ibrahimovic me to come back and they are waiting to enjoy not only me, but the team as well. “Hopefully, we can give them a good game and, at the same time, we are in the preparation. We need to keep focused, to build up the physical part and the conditioning part but we will give them what they want.” Ibrahimovic only joined United’s pre-season training this week but he has been impressed with the squad Mourinho is assembling as

well as the methodologies of the Portuguese manager, whom he is linking up with for the first time since winning the Serie A title with him at Inter in 2009. “[It has been] positive vibes. They seem to be good guys, quality players, they train very hard and, during the training, are very focused,” Ibrahimovic said. “The coach - he is direct, he is concrete, he says what he wants and the players are adapting. So there are only positive things.”

Rosberg pips Hamilton to take German GP pole HOCKENHEIM, Jul 30 (Agencies): Home favourite Nico Rosberg will start on pole for Sunday’s German Grand Prix after edging out his title rival Lewis Hamilton. Rosberg, six points behind Hamilton in the championship, had been fastest in all three practice sessions at Hockenheim, and he made it count where it matters to secure his second pole in as many grands prix. Daniel Ricciardo qualified third for Red Bull while his team-mate Max Verstappen will start from fourth. Hamilton, a winner in five of the last six races to leapfrog Rosberg at the top of the driver standings, was forced to see the stewards on Saturday morning when he was adjudged to have blocked the Haas of Romain Grosjean following an unsafe release by his Mercedes team in final practice. It was feared that the Briton, whose defence of his third title has been plagued by bad luck, could be hit with

a reprimand for the error , which would have resulted in an automatic 10-place grid drop. But following a brief investigation, Hamilton escaped any punishment although his team were fined £8,500 for their part in the incident. The verdict from the stewards enabled Hamilton to take on Rosberg in a straight fight for pole, and it was the latter who prevailed to the delight of his home crowd. Hamilton had appeared on course to improve on his final timed run, but made a mistake at the hairpin. And his error paved the way for Rosberg to beat him to the top slot on the grid with one of his best qualifying displays of the season. With the Red Bull drivers locking out the second row behind Mercedes, Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel qualified fifth and sixth for Ferrari. Jolyon Palmer vowed to bounce back from the spin which cost him his first points

in the sport last weekend in Hungary. And the British rookie, whose future in Formula One beyond his debut season remains in doubt, turned in a strong performance to squeeze into Q2 at the expense of his Renault team-mate Kevin Magnussen. Palmer ultimately qualified 16th, but will start one place higher on the grid after Grosjean was handed a five-

place penalty for an unscheduled gearbox change. Jenson Button, given the all-clear to race after he was taken to hospital with an eye complaint on Friday night, will line up in 12th on the grid, while his McLaren team-mate Fernando Alonso could manage only 14th. It is a display which is likely to have pleased McLaren chairman Ron Dennis who arrived in the paddock on Saturday.

Djokovic enter Toronto semis

Novak Djokovic serves to Tomas Berdych during their quarter-finals match on Friday. TORONTO, Jul 30 (Agencies): Novak Djokovic said he needed some luck to escape on Friday with a 7-6 (8/6), 6-4 victory over Tomas Berdych for a place in the semi-finals of the ATP Toronto Masters. The top seed with three Canadian titles was tested in a 71-minute opening set but survived before motoring to victory over a top 10 rival he has now beaten in 25 of 27 meetings. Djokovic needed two hours to reach the final four, winning his 12th straight match against Berdych. The

Czech has now lost 17 straight matches against top five opponents. But it was not all oneway traffic for Djokovic, who struggled to close out a testing tiebreaker. Berdych showed his desire by winning five consecutive points from 1-3 down in the first-set decider, only to miss on three set points as he finally handed over the set to his opponent. Djokovic earned a second-set break for 2-1 and rode the margin to his eventual victory in a match which was

well below his best level. “I don’t know how I got out of that tiebreak,” Djokovic said. “I guess I was just able to focus on the next point. “Tomas had a doublefault (on set point) and some errors. I was very fortunate to win that first set. “I really had some relief going into the second.” Second seed Stan Wawrinka stormed into his first semi-final here, thrashing South Africa’s Kevin Anderson 6-1, 6-3. The Swiss second seed will next face Japanese third

Former India captains file PIL against AIFF NEW DELHI, Jul 30 (Agencies): Two former India captains have filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) against the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and sports ministry. The case will be up for hearing in the Supreme Court on August 5. Legendary goalkeeper and captain of India during 1982 Asian Games, Bhaskar Ganguly, and defender Manoranjan Bhattacharya have mentioned in their appeal the “alleged mismanagement and mishandling of funds by the AIFF” following their Rs 700 crore agreement with marketing partners IMG-Reliance in 2010. “AIFF has grossly mismanaged and arbitrarily administered the sport the sport of football in the country, resulting in violations of the rights of players, domestic clubs and the football watching public in India.” The PIL seeks appropriate directions from the Supreme Court for setting up a committee to oversee the state and condition of the administration and development of football in India.

The advocate for the petitioners is well-known lawyer Prashant Bhushan. In their plea, they have raised various issues that includes the protection of fundamental rights under Articles 14, 19 (1) (a) and 19 (1) (g) of the Constitution of India. The PIL says, “The IMG-RIL has a direct conflict of interest as they hold all commercial rights to football in India and at the same time own and promote Indian Super League... and ignore promotion and popularising the game involving the clubs who are the most important stakeholders and the backbone of any sport in any country.” It also alleges, “AIFF and IMF-RIL have ignored obligations towards the development and promotion of domestic tournaments.” When told about the PIL, AIFF’s senior vice-president Subrata Dutta told TOI, “AIFF is in a strong position to answer clearly and transparently all the questions raised if required.” In 2010, 2011, reputed clubs like such as JCT and Mahindra United FC had to

withdraw from the I-League. The trend continued as other clubs such as Chirag United and Pailan Arrows (owned by AIFF) had to shut operations. In 2015, clubs such as Royal Wahingdoh FC and Pune FC and Bharat FC had to withdraw. The PIL says, “It is all due to the unprofessional attitude of AIFF.” In the 2014-15 season, the PIL mentions, due to scheduling conflicts and financial reasons, AIFF discontinued Federation Cup, the Durand Cup and the Rovers Cup. The PIL has said, “AIFF has also mismanaged funds and arbitrarily managed its administration.” The PIL also focuses on the travelling expenses of AIFF officials. “It is to be noted that while AIFF denies basic facilities to the budding footballers of the country they prefer to spend 65 lakhs on its meeting expenses.” The PIL also mentions the non-functioning of the two academies in Navi Mumbai and Kolkata, “despite the AIFF receiving funds from FIFA for the upkeep of these academies.”

seed Kei Nishikori, who beat former top-10 player Grigor Dimitrov 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 with four breaks of the Bulgarian’s serve. Although he’s still recovering from the rib problems which forced him out of the fourth round of Wimbledon, Asia’s top player won his 39th match of 2016, fighting back in the third set after losing the second and lifting his record over Dimitrov to 3-0. Wawrinka was in full flow against Anderson as he swept the opening set in a master-class display. Anderson, ranked 34th, has yet to reach the final four at the Masters 1000 level, losing in all seven of his attempts. Wawrinka needed just 73 minutes to dispatch Anderson, who was limited to six aces and dropped his serve four times. “It was a really good match, I started really well the first game,” Wawrinka said. “It’s one of the best matches of the year I’ve played. It showed me that I was ready, aggressive, moving really well. I was calm, served very good and mixed up my game.” Two-time Grand Slam winner Wawrinka, the world number five, is chasing his fourth title of the season after success at Chennai, Dubai and Geneva.

Verdict on wrestler Narsingh deferred to Monday New Delhi, Jul 30 (PTI): The suspense over wrestler Narsingh Yadav’s Olympic participation was today prolonged further after the National Anti-Doping Agency deferred its final verdict on the doping scandal to Monday. The National Anti Doping Agency (NADA) hearing today went on for marathon eight hours. NADA DG Navin Agarwal said the panel studied a lot of documents today and will give its verdict on Monday. “The panel again sat today and reviewed the whole case. The panel will give its verdict at 4 pm on Monday,” Agarwal told reporters “The reason for marathon meeting and the delay in declaring the verdict as a lot of documents needed to be studied and the arguments have been lengthy. We are hopeful that justice will be done,” he added. WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh refused to comment anything as the case is still sub-judice. Narsingh had returned positive for methandienone – a banned anabolic steroid, following which Narsingh cried foul, claiming that the entire episode was a conspiracy against him. Narsingh has already been replaced by Parveen Rana in the Olympic bound squad.

Narsingh’s father demands probe

Varanasi, Jul 30 (PTI): The father of wrestler Narsingh Yadav and several of his supporters today staged a protest in front of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s parliamentary office here at Ravindrapuri demanding a high-level inquiry into the doping scandal.

Pancham Yadav, father of the 26-year-old wrestler who tested positive in two dope tests following which his hopes of participating in Rio Olympics faded away, claimed that his son was “innocent” and had fallen a victim to a conspiracy hatched by the rivals to oust him from the games.

Indian contingent settling into Olympic Village

Members of the Indian Olympic delegation arrive at Rio de Janeiro International Airport for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on Saturday. (AP/PTI) Rio de Janeiro, Jul 30 (IANS): With less than a week to go for the start of the Rio Olympics, the Indian contingent members have begun reaching the Olympic Village. With almost half of the contingent already here and the two hockey teams joining on Friday evening, the contingent is almost full strength. “It’s great to get to the Village and get used to the facilities. It is a long journey to Rio and it is important that our boys and girls get here well in advance to get acclimatised,” Chef de Mission of the Indian contingent Rakesh Gupta said in a release. The official welcoming ceremony for the Indian team will be held on Monday. All teams are given specific slots and a brief but elegant ceremony is held to officially welcome them into the Olympic Village, even though they

have been staying in it for a few days. “The welcome ceremony is an official function and the Indian tri-colour as also the national anthem will be played. It is also a team bonding exercise in a way,” Gupta said. “The athletes are also getting to know their teammates from different disciplines. Throughout the season, they meet players from the same sport, but here they get a great chance to mingle with others, both national and international. That’s what makes Olympics so unique.” The archery team was the first to arrive in Rio and others include athletics team, boxers and shooters. Joining the other shooters who arrived a couple of days earlier, was London Olympic bronze medallist, Gagan Narang. He was accompanied by Chain Singh.

“We are coming from Switzerland and it has been a long journey. It is always nice to get to an Olympic Games and the focus is now on the event,” said the experienced Narang as Chain nodded. The Indian contingent members have been getting used to the Village and the various activities here. Many of the athletes after training were entertaining themselves at the Village Plaza and the Virtual Reality set up here. Set amidst mountains in Barra in Rio, the Olympic Village has 31 buildings, which will house nearly 15,000 athletes and officials. It is a mini city by itself and has virtually every facility including gyms, polyclinics, entertainment centres and a huge dinning hall with food from every part of the world. All the residential buildings have been provided with WiFi and internet facilities.

Russian weightlifters barred from Rio Olympics

MOSCOW, Jul 30 (Agencies): The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) on Friday formally suspended Russia’s eightstrong weightlifting team, effectively excluding it from next month’s Rio Olympics, because of doping offences. Last month, the IWF said its Executive Board had decided to suspend for a year national federations that produced three or more doping violations in re-tests from the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games - made possible by improved detection techniques. It named Russia, along with Kazakhstan and Belarus, but said it would await confirmation of the positive tests from the International

Four other Russian lifters were named in the McLaren report. “...we would like to highlight the extremely shocking and disappointing statistics regarding the Russian weightlifters,” the IWF said in its statement on Friday. “As of today there are seven confirmed AAFs (positive tests)for Russian weightlifters from the combined reanalysis process of London and Beijing, while the second wave of Beijing reanalyses is not yet in a stage when the names and countries involved

RIO DE JANEIRO, Jul 30 (Agencies): The Australian team said they evacuated their building at the Olympic Village in Rio de Janeiro because of a fire in the basement on Friday, one week before the Games open. The fire, which filled the stairwells of the building with smoke, caused no injuries and the team was back in the building after around half an hour, a team spokesman said. It was the latest incident in a tense week at the Olympic Village, where Australia and several other teams complained about unfinished and dirty rooms before moving in. “We are all accounted for,” said Mike Tancred, director of media and communications for the Australian Olympic Committee, adding that the fire did not appear to have been serious. “It was a good drill for us. We cleared all 23 floors of the building,” he added. A spokesman for Rio’s fire department declined to comment. Kitty Chiller, the head of the Australian delegation, had complained on Sunday about exposed wiring and blocked toilets, saying accommodation at the Village was “not safe or ready” for the Games, which open on Aug. 5. Chiller had initially refused to let her team stay in the Village, but moved athletes in this week after organizers deployed a task force of 600 workers to tackle repairs.
