Late Isak laid to rest at Chishilimi K.V.Nurumi

CHISHILIMI (PUGHOBOTO), JUL 2 (NPN): Assu (as popularly known among the Sumis) Isak Chishi Swu returned to his native village after 53 long years in Naga political movement, only for the second time, the first in 2012, but this time, only for his mortal remains to be buried here as he had desired. Late Swu was accorded rich and glorious tribute, befitting an honour and respect by the Sumi frontal organisations under the aegis of Sumi Hoho, which lasted for over five hours and attended by several thousands of Sumis from all walks of life. Bidding adieu to his long time companion and associate, NSCN (I-M) general secretary Th. Muivah said that under the leadership of late Isak Swu, Nagas had accomplished three most decisive issues, what other leaders in the past could not achieve. Firstly, Muivah recalled that it was through Swu’s unceasing faith in “Jehovah” that both India and Nagas realised the futility of hostility and resolved to settle the IndoNaga issue through political dialogues. Secondly, he said that the Indians recognised the unique status of the Nagas and thirdly, both Indians and Nagas came to a conclusion that both were separate entities whose “sovereign rights need to be respected for peaceful coexistence.” “When the Indians have admitted the sovereign rights of the Nagas is still with the

people during Isak’s time as chairman, why do we still doubt?” questioned the NSCN (I-M) ato kilonser and further challenged the present generation to carry forward the torch of truth as done so by his old comrade. NSCN(I-M) vicechairman “gen” (retd) Kholi Konyak made a clarion call to all the Naga political groups and leaders to carry forward the legacy left behind by late Swu stating that only through unity, will peace and solution be brought about. Convenor, NSCN (I-M) steering committee, Qhevihe Chishi recalled how the late Naga leader asked his comrades to follow the path of truth and stand firm to truth. He said the life of late Swu was “great,” “magnificent” and “immeasurable.” Representatives from Chakesang Public Organisation (CPO), Chozuba Range Village Organisation, Adhoc Council Chozuba and Dzulhami village attended the funeral service and paid floral

tributes to the late Naga leader. CPO had opted to attend the last rites of late Isak Chishi Swu at his native place to show solidarity of “brotherhood” among the Sumis and the Chakesangs. Representatives from the Yimchungru Tribal Council were also present and paid floral and expressed condolences to the bereaved family. Several condolence messages from various organisations and groups were read out by SH, general secretary, Vihuto Asumi. CPO president Kekhwengulo Lea described late Swu as a selfless and true patriotic leader who had given his life for the “nation.” He hoped that the spirit of patriotism as exemplified by Isak Chishi Swu will continue. Sumi Hoho president, Toniho Yepthomi recollected his meetings with late Isak Chishi Swu in the recent past and how the late Naga leader had envisioned bringing about “solution” for the Nagas. DHAKA, JUL 2 (AGENCIES): Twenty foreigners were brutally hacked to death by ISIS militants inside a restaurant popular with expatriates here in the high-security diplomatic zone before commandos launched an assault today killing six attackers and capturing one alive, ending Bangladesh’s worst terror attack. The army rescued 13 people, officials said. Heavily armed militants chanting “Allahu Akbar” asked their hostages to recite Quranic verses to know who among them were Muslims. Others were hacked to death, according to one of the many eyewitness accounts of the gory Bangladesh carnage that has shocked the world. The Daily Star citing a

father of a hostage said the militants who stormed the Holey Artisan Bakery, a popular hangout for foreigners in the high-security and affluent Gulshan diplomatic zone of the Bangladesh capital, performed a religion identity check on their captives and asked them to recite the Quran. Those who recited verses from the holy Muslim book were spared, the daily said. “The others were tortured by the gunmen,” said Rezaul Karim, father of one of the hostages Hasnat Karim. Director of Military Operations Brig. Nayeem Ashfaq Chowdhury said the militants slaughtered 20 hostages before the joint operation led by the armed forces began. Most of those killed were found with

DIMAPUR, JUL 2 (NPN): Nagaland RMSA Teachers Association (NRMSATA) 2015-16, at an executive meeting along with all the district conveners, have resolved to serve a 7-day ultimatum on the department of school education (RMSA), to release the pending salary. In a press release, NRMSATA president Renbemo L Patton and general secretary Kezhothito Keyho expressed dismay that despite enough reminders through open letters, representations, executive meeting with the mission director etc, the department turned a deaf ear to their plea. Therefore, they said it has become almost impossible to endure for such a long period to carry on their noble job for nearly half a year with empty stomach. While welcoming education minister’s plan to introduce a bio-metric attendance in the school, cash payment of salary etc, the forum, however, asserted that it was like putting the cart before

their throat slit, he added. “Army Para commando Unit-1 led the operation and killed six terrorists within 13 minutes,” Chowdhury told reporters. The mission codenamed ‘Operation Thunderbolt’ was launched after the Prime Minister ordered the army to intervene to end the hostage crisis, he said. Two senior police officers were also killed in the gun battle that began Friday night. He said the bodies of the victims were recovered during a search in the Holey Artisan Bakery compound after the operation. The bodies were shifted to the Combined Military Hospital morgue for autopsy to confirm their identity. Gunshots and sounds of explosion rocked the area at 7:40 a.m (local time) as

the horse. Instead, the forum said the minister should first view the primary needs of the teachers, like regularization of salary, as the top most priority. “Timely payment of salary will automatically motivate the teachers in transiting their duties more promptly, instead of imposing a draconian law on teachers,” they said. The forum said it was “very disheartening” and made one to ponder as to why those employed under central flagship programme had to “keep on pestering the concern department for the release of salary every now and then.” Meanwhile, the forum has warned that failure to address the grievance within the stipulated period would force the RMSA teachers to take own course of action. “There is every possibility for the RMSA teachers to apply the policy of ‘no pay no work’,” they said, adding that incumbent teachers would not be held responsible for any negative outcomes.

security forces launched the final assault to end the siege. Minutes later, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced the end of siege and said security forces “successfully” wrapped up their operation, freeing 13 hostages after killing six terrorists and capturing one militant at the Spanish cafe. “It was an extremely heinous act. What kind of Muslims are these people? They don’t have any religion,” she said in a televised speech, referring to the terrorists. “They (gunmen) defied the call of Ramadan’s tarabi (special evening) prayers and went to kill people...The way they killed people is intolerable. They don’t have any religion...terrorism is their religion,” said Hasina, with Army chief General

NEW DELHI, JUL 2 (IANS): With widespread resentment against the “meagre” pay hike announced in the 7th Pay Commission, as many as 33 lakh central government employees are threatening to go on strike from July 11. “They have fixed the minimum wage at a meagre Rs 18,000 in the 7th Pay Commission. In the last Pay Commission, the basic pay was Rs 7,000. They multiplied it by 2.57 (fitment formula) and came to Rs 18,000. We are demanding 3.68 fitment formula,” Shivgopal Mishra, General Secretary, All India Railway Men Federation and Convenor of National Joint Council of Action (NJCA), told IANS. NJCA is a front formed by six gover nment staff unions, including Confederation of Central Government Employees (CCGE), All India Defence Employee Federation and National Coordination Committee of Pensioners Association, to oppose the hikes given by the 7th Pay Commission.

Abu Belal Muhammad Shafiul Huq by her side. “I thank Allah as we could destroy the terrorists and rescue the hostages,” Hasina said, adding that “none of the terrorists could flee the scene, six of them were killed on the spot and one was captured alive.” Hasina vowed to do everything to “uproot the militants and violent extremists” from Bangladesh. Hasina announced two days of national mourning in wake of the deadly attack. Islamic State g roup claimed responsibility for the attack through its Amaq news agency, nearly four hours after the hostage crisis unfolded, according to the US-based SITE Intelligence group, which monitors jihadist activity online.

“As many as 33 lakh government employees, excluding the defence personnel, will go on strike if we do not get some kind of assurance from the government to reconsider the decision. The major contention is on the minimum wage, which we are demanding to be Rs 26,000,” K.K.N. Kutty, President of CCGE and general secretary of national coordination committee of pensioners association, told IANS. “We had a meeting with a group of ministers, including the Home Minister (Rajnath Singh), Finance Minister (Arun Jaitley) and Railway Minister (Suresh Prabhu) on the evening of June 30. They said it will be considered and will be referred to some committee,” said Mishra. “We are waiting to hear back on this from the government by July 4 evening or July 5. In our meeting, it was only a verbal commitment. If the government gives us specific details like which committee will review, etc. then we will defer the strike. We have a meeting on July 5 to decide on

the strike,” Kutty said. “We had met the government on June 9, and suggested various improvements in the 7th Pay Commission’s recommendations. But the government has not given any heed to whatever improvements we had proposed. They have given same hike as suggested by 7th Pay Commission,” C. Srikumar, General Secretary, All India Defence Employees Federation, told IANS. Srikumar contends that the prices of essential commodities considered by the Seventh Pay Commission itself were faulty, which has resulted in the meagre rise. “Price considered of essential commodities by pay commission is not right. They have taken dal price at Rs 97. Where do you get dal for Rs 97?” he said. The NJCA is also demanding for the withdrawal of the new national pension scheme (NPS), which came into effect from October 2004. “A lady employee, who got the job after her husband’s death, retired after 12 years of

service. She comes under the new NPS scheme as she joined service after 2004. She gets Rs 960 pension per month,” Srikumar said. However while the fate of the strike is still unknown, a central government junior staffer on the condition of anonymity told IANS: “I don’t think much will come out of the strike. The only thing the government might do is increase the allowances slightly, that’s it.” The Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS), affiliated to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, the parent body of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, has also expressed its “dissatisfaction” at the 7th Pay Commission’s recommendations. “A huge gap has been created between the minimum and the maximum wage after the government approved the Seventh Pay Commission Report’s recommendation,” BMS general secretary Virjesh Upadhyay told IANS earlier. However, BMS is not expected to go on strike as it is not a part of the NJCA.

NEW DELHI, JUL 2 (AGENCIES): To protect patients from being overcharged by private laboratories and hospitals, the health ministry has asked all states to cap prices of dengue tests. The decision was taken in a review meeting headed by health minister JP Nadda on Friday to assess the preparedness and measures taken by the Centre as well as states to tackle the outbreak of dengue. “We have issued advisories to all states asking them to cap prices of tests at private labs so that a reasonable amount is charged from people,” Nadda told TOI after the meeting. He said, most states including Delhi government have assured of appropriate measures to take care of public interest. Instead of arresting the culprits, attempts were being made to arrest seven villagers including the convener of the JAC formed in connection with the April 11 firing incident. The displaced villagers have also decided not to accept any relief assistance from the state government if their grievances were addressed. On the other hand, following an assurance from the government to pay a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the family of the slain youth and a government job to one of the family members, local JAC formed against the death of the youth (Md Arif Khan) has accepted to take back the dead body which is still lying at JNIMS morgue.

5 BJP trying to impose ‘Hindu Master plan to President inaugurates smart Church model village pilot project rashtra’, says MIM chief Owaisi preserve in Old Goa national

H Y D E R A B A D, J U L 2 (IANS): MIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday charged the BJP with trying to impose a ‘Hindu rashtra’ on the country in the name of the Uniform Civil Code. Talking to reporters, he said that the Bharatiya Janata Party was trying to implement the RSS agenda as it had failed to fulfill poll promises. The Hyderabad MP was reacting to the BJP-led government seeking Law Commission’s views on implementation of uniform civil code. “After failing to provide 1.5 crore jobs, deregulate gas and kerosene and reviving economy, the BJP is trying to implement RSS main agenda of imposing Hindu rashtra,” he alleged. He wondered if government can do away with Article 371 which has given cultural rights and protection to Mizoram and Nagaland. “Hindu undivided family get tax rebates. Can you remove them?” he asked. The MP said the government should try for total prohibition which is one of the 16 directive principles of the Constitution, contending that alcohol is cause of many evils in society and is also leading to deaths in road accidents. Owaisi also defended his announcement that he will provide legal aid to five youth arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), and accused the media of blowing this out of proportion. “If I don’t give the legal help, court will appoint a lawyer for them. In our democracy every accused gets legal aid and that is how we do justice in our country,” he said and pointed

Asaduddin Owaisi out that legal aid was given even to Mumbai attack convict Ajmal Kasab. He said NIA had made some charges but the families of the arrested youth told him they are innocent. “The court will decide whether they are guilty or not and everyone has to accept the court verdict,” he said. The MP reiterated that media by trying to sensationalize the case was targeting old city where Hindus and Muslims were living peacefully. “Targeting one particular community and branding south of Hyderabad will prove counter productive,” he said. Owaisi reiterated that he was the first to condemn Islamic State and continue to do so. “IS are terrorists and there are no two opinions about it. All Islamic scholars have condemned them,” he said. He also reiterated that if those arrested were acquitted by a court of law, the NIA officers who arrested them should be suspended. He said in many cases Muslim youth were acquitted by courts but they lost many precious years, citing the cases of the Akshardham attack and the Malegaon andf Makkah Masjid blast cases.

DEHRADUN, JUL 2 (PTI): Three more bodies were recovered on Saturday in Pithoragarh from under tonnes of debris left because of the cloudburst that hit the area yesterday, raising the toll in rain-related incidents in the state to 15. “While nine bodies were recovered from Pithoragarh district late last night, three more were pulled out from the debris this morning,” Additional Secretary Disaster Management C Ravishankar told PTI. The number of bodies recovered in Chamoli so far is three, he said, adding six are still believed to be under the debris with receding chances of their survival. A total of 12 people died in Pithoragarh district in the wee hours on Friday as it was hit by six cloudbursts and three

Nine people died in Bastadi, two in Naulada and one in Charma village of Pithoragarh while three died in Chamoli’s Sirji (2) and Vaduk (1) villages, he said. Twenty one people are still missing from affected villages in the two districts (15 in Pithoragarh and six in Chamoli) and personnel of the NDRF, SDRF, ITBP, SSB are searching for them despite bad weather and unavailability of approach roads. Pranab Mukherjee, Birender Singh, Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar and others during the launching of ‘Smart Model Village Initiative’ in Rashtrapati Bhawan. (PTI) NEW DELHI, JUL 2 (IANS): President Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday inaugurated a smart model village pilot project at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The President said in the last four years of his presidency this was the first time that he was having the privilege of interacting with several sarpanches and village-level functionaries at Rashtrapati Bhavan. He called it a landmark initiative to replicate the experience in transforming the President’s estate into a smart model township in five selected villages in Haryana. He complimented and thanked all stakeholders -- the central ministries, the government of Haryana including district and village-level administration, local bodies and governmental and other organisations. Since assuming office, the President had been emphasising on the opening of Rashtrapati Bhavan to the people. “However, today he felt that Rashtrapati Bhavan had been truly opened to the public since the village representatives were present there,” a release from

Rashtrapati Bhavan stated. Expressing confidence that this initiative would not remain confined to these five villages but spread to the entire country, the President said it is only the representatives of the villages who can transform this country. “Our progress and development can be achieved at the desirable speed only in partnership with these decision-makers in the villages,” he said. Mukherjee also urged the empowerment of women and youth. The five villages which will be developed into smart villages under this pilot project are Dhaula, Alipur, Harichandpur and Taj Nagar in Gurgaon district; and Rojka Meo in Mewat district of Haryana. The President had announced this pilot project on the occasion of the inauguration of the Intelligent Operations Centre (IOC) at Rashtrapati Bhavan and the launching of a Mobile App ‘Monitor’ for transformation of President’s Estate into a smart township on May 19.

LUCKNOW, JUL 2 (AGENCIES): Hoping to lift party morale and fortunes in the run-up to the 2017 assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, the Congress has decided to bring Priyanka Gandhi Vadra out of the “family pocket borough” of Amethi-Rae Bareli for campaigning in other parts of the state. Aware of the controversies surrounding Priyanka’s husband Robert Vadra — his company is at the centre of a probe ordered by the Haryana government into alleged irregularities in grant of licences to developers in Gurgaon — the Congress is also readying plans to counter attacks from rivals. Party sources said details on Priyanka’s campaign role will be firmed up once Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi returns from his vacation. To kickstart the campaign, she is likely to share the dais with her brother and senior leaders at a party rally in Allahabad or Lucknow, sources said, adding that the date and venue for the first rally will soon be decided. The party has already begun the groundwork for rallies that will be shows of strength in both Allahabad and Lucknow. Congress sources said Allahabad, the birthplace of Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi but never really nurtured by the Gandhi family which settled for Amethi and Rae Bareli, will be one area where the party will deploy its men and resources during the poll campaign. A big turnout in Lucknow, party sources said, will send a clear message across the state. “It is settled that she (Priyanka) will be seen beyond Amethi and Rae Bareli this election. With Rahul Gandhi, she will take on rival parties. Different leaders and strategists have different suggestions. Some have suggested that the mistakes made with Rahul in 2012, of over-exposing him, should not be repeated. There are others who feel that she should first be brought to the AICC. There’s still another section which wants her as the face of the election campaign,” a party source said, adding that the leadership has already received feedback from different sources including senior leaders and strategists. In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, though Priyanka did not move out of Rae Bareli and Amethi, she took regular swipes at the campaign speeches of Narendra Modi made in different parts of the country. Those who worked with her closely in the two constituencies say she can hit back at rivals strongly.

CHENNAI, JUL 2 (PTI): A 24-year-old engineering graduate was arrested in Tirunelveli in connection with the sensational murder of a woman IT professional here last week and when surrounded by police, he attempted suicide by slashing his neck. “The accused Ram Kumar was arrested in Tirunelveli late last night. When police went into his house, he hid in the backyard and inflicted an injury on his neck by using a knife when surrounded by police,” Chennai Police Commissioner T K Rajendran told

areas, he said. Four houses have been fully damaged in Pithoragarh district and 12 partially whereas rubble falling from hillsides has blocked Rishikesh-Badrinath highway besides 33 other rural motor roads in Chamoli district, said Secretary Diasater Management Shjailesh Bagoli in a presentation to Chief Minister Harish Rawat who convened a meeting at his residence today to review the situation. PWD and GREF personnel are engaged in opening the blocked roads with the help of JCBs, he said. 160 families have been affected by rain related incidents out of which 75 members have been kept in relief camps in Basatadi and Naulada villages.

PANAJI, JUL 2 (PTI): To preserve the church complex in Old Goa, which once served as the capital of the erstwhile Portuguese-ruled colony, the state government intends to draw a master plan for the heritage site. UNESCO has already declared the churches at Old Goa, located nine kilometers from Panaji, as heritage monuments which are protected by Archaeological Survey of India. The Goa government in a notification issued on Friday has assigned renowned architect Ketak Nachinolkar the work of conducting a detailed study on various parameters concerning the heritage site. The notification by state Urban Development department said that based on the detailed study by Nachinolkar, the Master Plan for the complex would be drawn. “Nachinolkar has to submit his report within a month,” Director of Urban Development Elvis Gomes said. The Old Goa Church complex is home to world famous monuments including Basilica of Bom Jesus which houses relics of St Francis Xavier and one of Asia’s biggest churchs Se Cathedral. “The gover nment is concerned about the need for conservation and development of the Old Goa Heritage area which is recognised by the UNESCO as a World Heritage site and also the need to prepare a comprehensive Master Plan for the said purpose,” Gomes said.

Monsoon challenge

W

ith the arrival of monsoon, landslides in the hilly areas and inundation in the foothill areas will be a regular feature and these pose a challenge on authorities. Places like Dimapur become inundated with rain and filth and that itself poses serious health hazard. The monsoon rains have already exposed the dirt and filth that exist alongside people and which will continue to be a problem throughout the monsoon months. This neglect also poses potent threat on the roads which get damage well before the normal time. Many roads are already damaged due to stagnation of water and gradually turn into ponds. Though the government spends crores of rupees it is still unable to ensure that roads are able to last for a considerable period since construction of roadside drainage is not given due consideration. The ravage of monsoon on the premier town of the state cannot be underestimated and urgent steps need to be taken to provide good drainage. Though roadside drains had been constructed in the recent past, the less said the better as they have only added problems instead of solving one. What has been ignored remains drainage of which so much had been written in this column in the past. Drains have disappeared over the decades due to encroachment while most are non functional in every sense of the term This subject has been covered in numerous issues in this column and the same scenario replayed during the past few days has given another opportunity to focus on the need for proper drainage system in Dimapur. It is not a wholesome sight when rain water and drain water mix and invade homes and roads. Just think how people still do not protest against this lack of concern and inhuman neglect by the authorities. Dimapur does not need glow lights or beautiful paints on buildings to make it look good. It urgently needs drains so that rain water and drain water could flow out efficiently. Proper drainage also means giving no place for mosquitoes and other tropical diseases to thrive. If proper drainage is available, then Dimapur would appear not only cleaner but would also have a healthier environment. The district and civic authorities have to come up with a viable plan to tackle this problem so as to also prevent more drains from being filled up for raising buildings. Disposal of garbage continues to be another problem and this also poses grave health hazard to the public. Besides drainage and garbage problems, Dimapur also faces another serious threat from thousands of latrine soak-pits that pour effluents into the soil. This dirty and infectious liquid can seriously damage the ground water which is used for consumption through ring wells or bore wells by thousands of homes. Substandard latrines coupled with dirty water have created unbearable and obnoxious smell posing grave health hazard. With growing urbanisation due to influx of people from nearby areas as well as other states, civic bodies are left grappling with the magnitude of sanitary, hygienic and traffic problems of which Dimapur as well as Kohima serve as examples. Without a doubt, the problem caused by lack of proper drainage is clearly evident in a place like Dimapur while the other issue of providing an efficient sewerage system is no less a daunting problem.

DailyDevotion The Conditions of Discipleship

If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also….And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me….So likewise, whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple. —Luke 14:26-27, 33 If the closest relationships of a disciple’s life conflict with the claims of Jesus Christ, then our Lord requires instant obedience to Himself. Discipleship means personal, passionate devotion to a Person— our Lord Jesus Christ. There is a vast difference between devotion to a person and devotion to principles or to a cause. Our Lord never proclaimed a cause— He proclaimed personal devotion to Himself. To be a disciple is to be a devoted bondservant motivated by love for the Lord Jesus. Many of us who call ourselves Christians are not truly devoted to Jesus Christ. No one on earth has this passionate love for the Lord Jesus unless the Holy Spirit has given it to him. We may admire, respect, and revere Him, but we cannot love Him on our own. The only One who truly loves the Lord Jesus is the Holy Spirit, and it is He who has “poured out in our hearts” the very “love of God” (Romans 5:5). Whenever the Holy Spirit sees an opportunity to glorify Jesus through you, He will take your entire being and set you ablaze with glowing devotion to Jesus Christ. The Christian life is a life characterized by true and spontaneous creativity. Consequently, a disciple is subject to the same charge that was leveled against Jesus Christ, namely, the charge of inconsistency. But Jesus Christ was always consistent in His relationship to God, and a Christian must be consistent in his relationship to the life of the Son of God in him, not consistent to strict, unyielding doctrines. People pour themselves into their own doctrines, and God has to blast them out of their preconceived ideas before they can become devoted to Jesus Christ.

(Tribute to late Isak Chishi Swu from his contemporaries)

I

came to know late Isak Chishi Swu since 1956 when we studied at St. Anthony’s College Shillong. From those young days he was a very humble and God fearing believer in Christ. He was one year senior to me. We used to attend English service on Sunday at police point Presbyterian Church, Shillong. We used to play football in the college eleven. We along with late Ramyo Tangkhul organized a Naga football team “Naga Frontier team” which was naturally a very popular team. Isak was very agile and deft in the game. This same spirit was also seen in his future course of life. Apart from our activities as young collegiate we had also been carefully watching the political problems due to Indian military operations against the Nagas. Immediately on graduation, late Isak Chishi Swu went home and his people sent him along with late Guhovi Sema to Naga Federal Govt. for peaceful solution but they were not allowed to return from there. Since then, Isak began his lifelong quest for peace, unity and sovereignty of the Naga nation as has been seen by all of us. When I received the news of Isak’s demise at around 1 p.m on Tuesday June 28, I immediately informed my wife and together prayed for the life of Isak. We thanked God for his life and for giving the Nagas such a giant warrior to lead us during these difficult transitional times. We rejoiced for the fact

W

that such a man was born on Naga soil and that Sumis were truly blessed to have had him as a great leader from its tribe. The thought of Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s poem , ‘Home they brought her warrior dead’ struck my mind as soon as I heard the news of Isak’s death. In the poem the warrior’s wife went into shock and could not cry out her sorrow. Those watching her tried to do everything to bring tears to her eyes or she would surely fade away. Nothing worked. At last an old nursemaid of 90 years sat the baby of the late warrior on his widows’s lap. Upon seeing the child the widow burst out in flood of tears and vowed to live for the sake of the child. The baby here can be referred to as the dream, vision and the fruition of the solution of the Naga political issue for which Isak had worked so hard. What late Isak has nurtured and left behind must be brought to fruition by unity of all the NPGs and people of Nagaland. May God guide all the leaders who will be taking Isak’s quest further until fulfillment. As for Mrs Eustar and the children, I must tell you that Isak was not only husband/father but a man whose services will forever be etched in the history of Naga nation and the world too. Take heart and remember that our prayers are with you all. Isak Swu had given his all and worked diligently and sincerely with a single minded purpose towards the political problem and thus the cease

The surviving Interim Body Members (IBM)

T

he living Interim Body Members (IBM) are deeply saddened at the news of the death of our beloved leader Isak Chishi Swu, chairman of the NSCN (IM) who had tirelessly strived for the realization of a truly peacefull Naga society. Isak Chishi Swu had been a diligent student at school and an accomplished sportsman with an unwavering deep faith in the divine providence. I knew him well being my roommate for two years in Kohima. He was highly respected by all of us school mates for the integrity of his unblemished character. He was one of the 2nd batch of Sumi graduates. Therefore, the Sema Tribe Council delegated Isak Chishi Swu along with his companions Kuhovi Zhimomi and Hoikeh Hesso on a peace mission to the then federal government. But they were deliberately delayed and later detained to serve the Naga national movement. Isak Chishi Swu championed all adversities and along with his colleagues in the present organization pioneered the ceasefire agreement between the government of India and the NSCN (IM). When the historic framework agreement and the final settlement that is in the offing be acceptable to the Nagas of Nagaland, it is our ardent hope that his vision of a peaceful atmosphere in Nagaland will surely be, in letter and spirit, his “dream come true.” We, the living IBM hereby extend our heartfelt condolence to the bereaved family members and all his associates. We pray that the soul of our departed leader rest in heavenly peace. Tokheho Sema, former IBM/legislator

Oh Belief! Where art thou?

hat could be the greatest cry of our generation today? Would it be a partial deliverance from the struggles we face daily? Or would it be the socio-political problems we encounter at every nook and corner?Holistically speaking, I reckon that the greatest cry of our generation today is to ‘help our unbelief.’ A multitude of problems are apparent today, and the government, churches, and various organizations are working tirelesslyin order to eradicate the social evils in our society; but, how many of us are truly concerned about the ‘belief ’ an individual possesses? Is not the absence of belief the root cause of every evil? Less importance has been bestowed upon the people of other faith, even though Christians are fully aware that their misconceptions require thorough clarification. No doubt, reasoning and debating is the order of the day in the 21st century. But there is an urgent need to integrate Christian reasoning into daily conversations and debate with unbelievers about the only Way, Truth and Life! There are a host of ethnic groups in different parts of the world, where many people have been ill-treated over the course of time. In the past, when religious intolerance was practised, religion was used as a tool for war and many people were slaughtered in the name of religion. Racism is another factor through which many innocent lives were adversely affected; these scars are carried even today. The poor being oppressed and exploited by the richis a reality we know all too well; it is rightly said, “The poor are the lost and the lost are

fire was declared and peace talk started between the government of India and Naga underground. Now the framework agreement between GoI and Naga underground in August 2015 has become the most famous agreement and it was because of late Isak and Muivah, that this framework could be achieved. During 2002, there was Naga consultative committee meeting in Bangkok consisting members from Naga Hoho, Tribal Hoho, Church leaders, co-ordination members, Naga Mothers’ Association, NPMHR, NSF and invitees. I also attended the meeting which decided to have a peaceful solution of Naga political problem. We sang the favourite songs of Isak Chishi Swu “It’s not an easy road”. After this meet also I used to meet Isak and Th. Muivah at Hebron camp for the same purpose. I am overwhelmed with deep nostalgic remembrance of late Isak. Thousands of people from all walks of life has condoled late Isak’s death at a time when his service was most needed. Let his soul rest in peace till resurrection day. Almighty God, grant solace to the bereaved family members. For me, I shall ever remember him and know that I had the privilege to have walked and played alongside a great giant warrior during my lifetime. I salute him. I believe that a very good solution would ensue out of the sacrifices of late Swu and may God cover the Nagas with His blessings. (T. Kikon former IBM/legislator)

the poor.” The horrors ofdropping atom bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki is still seen through the eyes of the descendants of the ones affected by radiation. The nightmares of the World Wars are still fresh today; the wars between nations, tribes, states, brothers... are they notevident today? The victims of all these struggles are crying for deliverance – they cry for someone who can come and rescue them from their nightmares, and whisk them away from their miseries. They cry for love, peace, joy, deliverance and salvation. Can you and I grant them their innermost desires? Which therapist, doctor or philosopher can offer an antidote for the problems in the world today? What are the means for eternal deliverance? Our cry cannot be answered, fulfilled or satisfied by a finite being. It has to be an infinite being – God alone can rescue us from the bondage of sins and the chains of evil which surround us! There is a recurring theme which runs through the Bible that says God hears the cry of the people crying out to Him.Today, living in a world full of pain and suffering, there is an anguished cry in every soul for deliverance from their sorrows. If only we cry out to God, He will deliver us. He is the same yesterday, today and forever; His love everlasting and unconditional. A wise statement made by a friend really inspired me; it says, “once we completely surrender our lives to Jesus, then everything in our life comes to order.” This statement intrigued me, and as I ponderedupon it, it led me to the realization that believing, knowing and walking with Jesus is the one

true solution to the unbelief that hovers around our environment today. Jesus Christ is the sole key who transcends space and time, lifts us high above the stormy seas and unlocks the unbelief of our souls and sets us free so that our eyes will be opened to the Truth and we will be assured with the fullness of our belief; this, in turn, is designed to ultimately lead us to salvation and eternal glory with Him. All anyone ever needs to do is to simply believe in Him. If we truly believe, we will love Him; if we love Him, we will keep His commandments; if we keep His commandments, we will reign as co-heirs forever. Since the beginning of time, every act of God has been for our good; all He wants in return is for us to believe in His Son. And it is not enough that we alone be saved. Armed with this Truth, we are duty-bound to spread the fragrance of Christ to every unbeliever because our Lord has commissioned us this task of making disciples of every nation. Another divine chain reaction will occur here: with the belief in Christ, all things will start to work for the good of the individual; a committed person will influence his/her family; a saved family will radiate the beauty of Christ and bring their respective societies to believe. Inevitably, love, joy and peacewill replace hatred, sorrow and terror. It is thus evident that a single person’s change of heart from unbelief to belief in Christ will convey innumerable blessingsand bring forth a glimpse of heaven on earth. May ‘I believe’ be the victory chant that resounds loud and clear among us! HusezoRhakho, Bible student

Lika Board appeals for clarification from PD H&FW

he news item carried by Nagaland Post on 11-06-2016 with the heading “Longon vows to restore image of H&FW” wherein the principal director Health and Family Welfare commenting the landowners and their appointment said that as per the govt. directive landowners could enjoy one post for one time only. Their comment poses a very serious concern for all the landowners of the state specially and more particularly for those whose ancestral land has been almost usurped if not deprived without adequate compensation and therefore even a paltry return in the form of appointing in the IV grade post for all time. (Till their landed property is acquired by the govt) should not be deprived by

the government department by taking unilateral decision. In Nagaland the govt does not own land either sub-soil or mineral wealth. “The ownership of sub-soil/mineral wealth follow the ownership of the land unless the owner of the land is deprived of the same by some valid process.” (Supreme Court judgment, Niti Central staff July 14, 2013) Article 371 (A) provides that the land and its resources is in the hands of landowner. The various department of the government functions through the establishment of infrastructures situated on the land either leased or donated by the landowners. As such no govt can run and function without the land. It is therefore found pertinent to appeal to the principal director

H&FW to clarify on her comment on landowners’ appointment in IV grade posts. Her comment imply that usual practise of good gesture of all the department in appointing landowners in such post is to be limited to one post for one time only. This wilful decision is a direct affront to all the Naga landowners because such steps taken by the govt will ultimately alienate the landowners from their ancestral landholding. The undersigned therefore make this appeal to the principal director H&FW to clarify her comment within seven days after publication of this appeal. Imtisungkum Pongen, chairman and Pur Longkumer secretary Lika Board

‘Oh captain! My captain’

he writer on his own behalf would like to express tribute condolence to his contemporary late Isak Chishi Swu, chairman of NSCN (IM). Isak Chishi Swu was three years junior to the writer and both studied at government highs school Kohima. In 1950 Isak was in class IX and writer was in class X. Isak was a footballer and team caption playing centre position because he used to kick off the ball with both his right and left legs. The writer played half back position. During those days football play was very interesting, full of joy, with no misery of mind and students had peace. Adage saying goes, “student life is golden life” indeed. Isak was blessed with innate wisdom, intelligence, far-sightedness ability since the time of conception in his mother’s womb by God, in order to lead the people in the right path. Such talent cannot be wiped out by anybody. After he graduated with honours in political science from St. Anthony College Shillong, he chose the right path and joined Naga political movement of freedom fighters to save motherland from enemies. He dedicated his whole life whole heartedly for Naga political issue till his last breath. He worked round the clock sleepless nights and made tremendous yeoman service. Iska is indeed a celebrity person who worked hard all his life to become well known but not for his own personal fame and glory. A man is counted great by deeds, not by birth and truly Isak is a great man by his deeds. Although Isak is no more with Naga nation but his footprints will remain in world history record forever and ever. Therefore it is earnestly appealed to all and sundry to pray for him and learn from him through all generations in order to achieve grand success of Naga political issue through almighty Lord God’s blessings. Jesus Christ said, “I am the resurrection and life and he/she that believeth in me though he/she be dead yet shall live and whoever liveth and believeth in me yet shall be alive and whoever liveth and beleiveth in me shall never die. (John 11:25-26). The writer convey his deepest condolence to the bereaved family members and pray that almighty God grant them strength, solace, patience and pray the departed soul to rest in eternal peace. A life not of his own Sir,

Asu Isak Chishi Swu has left behind a legacy of duel identity. To the outside world and adversaries, he was “bloody insurgent leader”, but behind the facade, a mere mortal. He finished his journey- praying, preaching and shouting his signature, “Praise the Lord”, even against his enemies. This spiritually balanced temperament, an alien characteristic to guerrilla leaders, irritated many. Sumi named him missionary, rubber stamp etc in desperate moments! But at the end of the day, Asu’s rare quality that had pricked the impatient, and his faithfulness towards his creator has not only won the complicated hearts of the Nagas, but even his worst enemies and foes alike. A man ordained by God to be called, “Dreaded Guerrilla” a contradictory tag to his very nature, yet designated, Asu Isak Chishi Swu has lived a life not his own... Zhekheli Zhimomi

Farewell organised for govt. officials

(L-R): PCCF and HoFF M. Lokeswara Rao IFS and director M.M.Solo.

DIMAPUR: A farewell programme was organised for Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (PCCF) and head of forest force (HoFF) M. Lokeswara Rao IFS on his retirement and outgoing director of Soil and Water Conservation M. M. Solo on June 30 by the respective department in a separate programme. A farewell programme for PCCF and HoFF M.Lokeswara Rao IFS, who retired on June 30 on completion of 33 years of service organised at PCCF and HoFF Office conference hall by the department staff. While delivering his farewell speech, the out-going PCCF and HoFF stated that in his exactly 33 years jour-

Late Isak laid to rest at Chishilimi (From p-1) He said that late Swu never thought of having concern for a single tribe but had concern for the entire Nagas as a whole. Late Isak Chishi Swu’s eldest son Ikato Swu said “my father has fought a good fight and ran a good race.” “He has led a purposeful and a full life,” he said, adding that though the prayers of millions of people was for his father to be with them for more time, it was eventually God’s will that his father was destined to be with his “Creator” on the day his father breathed his last. He, however, expressed pride that his father has left a legacy of peace, love and reconciliation to be pursued by the Nagas. He also expressed appreciation to all those who prayed for his father who miraculously was healed, enabling the late Naga leader to sign the framework agreement on August 3, 2015. Wife of late “Assu,” Eustar Chishi Swu in her farewell speech to her husband, recalled her 40 years of association with her husband.

She remembered the times that she and her husband spent in the jungles of unknown territories in Burma (now Myanmar) and in the borders of Arunachal Pradesh (bordering China) and in the hostile mainland Assam. She, however, said that it was God’s providence that they were saved from unknown persons in hostile environments. An emotional tribute was rendered by Vikheho Swu, minister, roads & bridges, where he sought forgiveness for any misgivings or mistrust from within the family circle during the times of trials and tribulations that his uncle late Isak Chishi Swu and family had ever cast upon the Naga people. He especially thanked those families that took care of his uncle’s siblings and brought them up to what the children are today. Thousands say ‘No’ to Brexit in colorful protest

London, JUL 2 (Agencies): They simply won’t take “Brexit” for an answer. Tens of thousands of protesters angered by Britain’s historic vote last week to leave the European Union marched down London’s up-market Park Lane Saturday, many of them hoping that divorce from the bloc will never actually happen. They say they’ve been cheated by a campaign deceit and false promises, chanting “We are the 48%, no more lies, no more hate.” The Leave vote won 52% of the vote, with the remain side at 48%. Organizers said around 50,000 people had joined the march by midday, and while the protest attracted all walks of life, millennials appeared to make up the bulk of the crowd. Thousands of EU supporters gather in Parliament Square during the March for Europe on Saturday. “wrong thing has happened.” “Both sides have lied. We’ve been part of Europe for so long -- you can’t change anything being alone. And to the EU, we’re not racist idiots. They represent a small number of people here. You’re always welcome,” he said. Britain has seen a rise in racial hate crimes following the vote. MORE: Hate crimes up fivefold in a week after Brexit vote. Organizers of the March for Europe protest said they were demanding decisive political action as the country plunged into political chaos and uncertainty following the vote. Amongst the crowds that chants, “we are the 48%, no more lies, no more hate.” Jude Malcomson a 25 year old, the-

atre technician from Yorkshire, England says, “The referendum doesn’t represent what I want for my country. Doesn’t represent the young generation. It’s important to be here.” “We’re all here today under one message -- we believe in the EU and we want our voices heard. We want action taken by the government,” March for Europe spokeswoman Helen Parker told CNN. “There is a complete lack of leadership and it’s just chaos in government. There’s no plan for this country and everybody’s worried about the future,” she said. Protesters’ signs referred to concerns about the economy, democracy and security, and complained of muddied information by campaigners and the media.

One protester held a sign reading “Divided Europe is a dangerous place,” while another read “Media & MPs: Shame on You.” “Brexit = Business Exit,” another read, as concerns grow of mass job losses if a withdrawal from the 28-country bloc prompts businesses to set up headquarters and factories elsewhere. Some of those joining the march were people who did vote to leave but then changed their minds in the aftermath, when the pound plunged and global markets took a nosedive. Others stood by their leave votes, but called for better leadership and a good relationship with the EU as Britain exits. British Prime Minister David Cameron, who campaigned to keep Britain in the

union, announced his resignation the day after the vote, saying he would step down in October. That has left the country without a clue as to who will usher them into a new and uncertain political phase, and Cameron has said the separation process will not officially start until the new prime minister is appointed. British PM: The job from hell? The British public has no more certainty of the opposition Labour Party, also torn apart by leadership tussles following the referendum. Many are interested in what kind of trade deal Britain will strike with the EU, as it could have significant consequences for the country’s economy. The majority of London voters supported remaining in the union, and Mayor Sadiq Khan has reiterated that the city is an outward looking one that is open to Europeans. Meanwhile, Conservative MPs have been lining up behind candidates to replace David Cameron as the next prime minister and leader of the party.

These deaths are the latest in coalition efforts to systemically eliminate Islamic State cabinet wherever they hide, disrupting their ability to plot external terror attacks and hold onto the territory they use to claim legitimacy, he said in a statement. Cook said the international coalition fighting Islamic State, working with local, ca-

pable, and motivated forces on the ground in Iraq and Syria, continues to make sustained progress in our campaign to deal Islamic Statea lasting defeat. “In recent days, the coalition has freed Fallujah from Islamic State’s grip; launched devastating strikes against Islamic State forces fleeing that city; completed the encirclement of Manbij, a key node in the flow of foreign fighters between Syria and Turkey; and started to clear key terrain south of Mosul of Islamic State forces,” he added. “In addition to making operationally significant strides in our campaign to defeat Islamic State, we continue to look for - and seize - every opportunity to hasten it,” Cook said. Al-Bajari was an experienced terrorist, a former member of al-Qaeda who brought his military skills into Islamic State’s terrorist network. He oversaw Islamic State’s June 2014 offensive to capture Mosul, and has also led the Islamic State Jaysh al-Dabiq battalion known for using vehicle-borne IEDs, suicide bombers and mustard gas in its attacks.

TAIPEI, JUL 2 (AP): Taiwan’s military said it mistakenly fired a supersonic anti-ship missile Friday that hit a fishing boat, killing one and injuring three people, on the day rival China was celebrating the Communist Party’s anniversary. The 500-ton patrol boat Chinchiang was undergoing an inspection inside a military base when the Hsiung Feng III missile was fired and landed about 40 nautical miles (75 kilometers) away in waters off the islands of Penghu near Taiwan, the official Central News Agency said. The Defense Ministry said the missile penetrated a nearby Taiwanese fishing boat, killing its captain and injuring three crew members. A preliminary investigation showed that missile operators likely failed to follow proper procedures, CNA said. A full investigation was under way, while the navy sent a helicopter and boats to search for the missile, the report said. The firing coincided with Beijing’s celebrations of the 95th anniversary of the founding of the ruling Communist Party.

enesis Publications will release “Hello, Goodbye: The Beatles in Tokyo, 1966” in November. We were sent the following details about the forthcoming photo book. For the 50th anniversary of The Beatles’ 1966 Tokyo concerts, Genesis Publications announces a book of rare photos of the trip. Taken by Japanese photographer Shimpei Asai, these pictures have never before been published outside Japan. In 1966 The Beatles embarked on their last tour, playing concerts in seven cities over the course of four months, beginning in London and ending in San Francisco. Millions of fans in England, Germany, Japan, the Philippines and America flocked to see the band. On June 29th 1966, The Beatles arrived in Tokyo to play five shows to sold-out crowds at the legendary Nippon Budokan. Built to commemorate the lives of Japan’s lost soldiers and a hallowed centre of Japanese culture, the venue had previously been reserved for traditional Japanese entertainment including sumo wrestling. As the first rock act to perform at the Budokan The Beatles faced controversy and protest - as well as causing excitement - with many objecting to a concert at the traditional venue. Following the success of The Beatles’ Tokyo concerts, however, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Led Zepplin and others also visited the Budokan, which is now an internationally recognized music venue.

PORT OF SPAIN, Jul 2 (Agencies): South Africa’s Hashim Amla and Dwayne Bravo of the West Indies set a new world record for a fifthwicket stand in Twenty 20 cricket of 150 in the Caribbean Premier League on Friday. The pair put on their match-winning partnership in 92 balls for the Trinbago Knight Riders against the Barbados Tridents at Queen’s Park Oval. Amla went on to score 81 from 54 balls having brought up his half century from 42 balls. Bravo made an undefeated 66 with both men hitting four sixes. They took their side from what looked like certain defeat to victory in 15.2 overs. Trinidad made 170-5 off their 20 overs before restricting Barbados to 159-8 for an 11run win. New Delhi, Jul 2 (Agencies): If repor ts are to believed, Lionel Messi could well play in the 2018 FIFA World Cup, representing Argentina in the worlds biggest single event sporting spectacle. The Barcelona star shocked the world last Sunday announcing his international retirement after Argentina were beaten in the Copa America Centenario final by Chile on penalties. But according to national team masseur Marcelo D’Andrea, Messi will certainly play for his Argentina once again, and most importantly in the 2018 World Cup. “I have no doubts that Leo will play at the [2018] World Cup,” D’Andrea was quoted as saying by goal.com. “I have a lot of faith in him and we must leave him alone for now. I trust him in his silence. He loves the national team and he will do everything for his country.” Following the 4-2 loss on penalties, a visibly distraught Messi said that it hurts not to be a champion despite reaching four finals, adding that “the national team is over for me.” This was the fourth time Messi has tasted defeat in a major tournament final. Apart from losing three Copa America finals (2007, 2015, 2016), the Messi-led Argentina were also beaten by Germany in the 2014 World Cup final. D’Andrea also revealed that Messi didn’t notify his decision with the camp, admitting that the Copa America loss was the hardest blow the Argentine had received in his career.

“I have submitted a medical exemption to be excused from the 100m final and the remainder of the National Championships,” Bolt said in a statement posted on Twitter. “I will seek treatment immediately and hope to show fitness at the London Anniversary Games on July 22 to earn selection for the Olympic Games in Rio.” The stunning turn of events came after Bolt, the 100m world record-holder in 9.58 seconds, won his 100m semi-final heat after a slow start in 10.04 at Kingston’s National Stadium. Bolt, who turns 30 on the final day of the Rio Games, then departed well before what was to have been a showcase 100m final against for mer world champion Yohan Blake, who won the sprint final in 9.95. Nickel Ashmeade finished second in 9.96 and Jevaughn Minzie was

third in 10.02 just edging out Asafa Powell who ran fourth in 10.03. “After feeling discomfort in my hamstring after the first round last night and then again in the semi-final tonight, I was examined by the Chief Doctor of the National Championships and diagnosed with a Grade 1 tear,” Bolt said in his statement. A grade one tear is classified as the most minor of hamstring injuries, usually involving only a muscle strain and just a few days to a week for recovery. Grade two is typically a partial tear with grade three a complete tear that might require months to heal. Bolt later posted photographs he said was himself being treated on the back of his left leg by a physiotherapist while stretched out face down. A caption read: “Starting the recovery process right away.”

sister Bronte, the reigning world 100m freestyle champion, in the 50m freestyle on Friday. “I still can’t believe it’s happened,” Campbell told reporters after her win. “People have been asking me when I was going to break

the world record for the last three years and honestly it wasn’t really on my mind but every time I got in the pool, it was like will they stop asking me this question now. Now you will.” In April, Cate had edged her sister to win an epic 100 metres freestyle final at the Australian Championships and Olympic trials in Adelaide. The Campbell sisters headline a 34-strong Australian swim team heading to Rio, with several ranked world number one on current form. A strong showing in Brazil would be a major turnaround for the squad, which produced just one gold at the 2012 London Olympics in a campaign marred by ill-discipline, drug use and drunkenness.

Russia will tighten responsibility for doping violations: Putin

Naantali, Jul 2 (IANS): Russia will tighten the responsibility for doping abuse by athletes while law enforcers will be empowered to investigate such cases, Russian President Vladimir Putin said. “The responsibility must be tightened,” Putin on Friday said adding that he had discussed the issue with the government on Thursday. “We’ve made a decision to support amendments to tighten legislation: to enhance responsibility and to adopt legislation allowing the use of detective and policing methods to let our law enforcers use investigative methods to expose the use and proliferation of doping substances,” Putin said, adding he hoped a future State Duma would support the amendments. Commenting on the

situation around accusations of doping abuse by Russian athletes, Putin noted that Russia is thankful to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and promised to study its information on doping among Russian athletes attentively, reports Tass. “We should be thankful to our counter parts from WADA and should treat the information they’ve provided in a most serious way,” he said, adding that Russia has always fought with doping at state level and will continue doing it. “We hope the information we’ll be receiving ourselves or will be getting otherwise will be unbiased,” Putin said adding this is the sphere where conclusions should not be made on the basis of rumours or simply suspicions.

suspended, Deschamps is set to hand 22-year-old Barcelona-bound Samuel Umtiti his international debut alongside Laurent Koscielny in defence. N’Golo Kante is also serving a one-match ban with Kingsley Coman, Moussa Sissoko and Yohan Cabaye all candidates to replace the energetic midfielder who played such a huge role in that Leicester success. Having plotted Iceland’s incredible rise alongside former Sweden boss Lars Lagerback, co-coach Heimir Hallgrimsson is again keen to look at his side’s limited expectations as an advantage. “There is a big difference in the pressure on Iceland and on France,” said Hallgrimsson. “France cannot lose the game, it would be horrible for the French nation. But the Icelandic people would be happy if we get a good performance against France. You dream big. But we are realistic, we can play the best game of our lives and still lose against France.” Jon Dadi Bodvarsson, who scored against Austria at the Stade de France, expects the tour nament hosts to give Iceland a much tougher time than they had against England. Iceland are sweating over the fitness of captain Aron Gunnarsson, who is nursing a back problem, but Lagerback on Friday said the Cardiff City midfielder, the team’s longthrow specialist, should recover in time to line up against the French.

Historic Euro semis for Wales

Wales striker Vokes is mobbed by team-mates after his goal sealed a historic win.

Lille, Jul 2 (IANS): Wales have advanced to the semifinals of a major football tournament for the first time with a comefrom-behind 3-1 victory over Belgium, which paid dearly for its careless play on defence in an Euro 2016 quarter-final here. The Belgians on Friday night grabbed the early lead with a long-distance strike off the foot of midfielder Radja

Nainggolan in the 12th minute. But Belgium’s porous defence allowed Wales captain Ashley Williams to score the equaliser at the half-hour mark, reports Efe. Wales then took the lead 10 minutes into the second half on a goal by Hal Robson-Kanu before Sam Vokes put the icing on the British squad’s victory -- its biggest in nearly 60 years -- shortly before the end of regu-

lation. The contest at the PierreMauroy Stadium featured two of soccer’s biggest stars in Belgium’s Eden Hazard and Welshman Gareth Bale, but the Chelsea attacking midfielder was hampered by a leg injury and largely invisible while the Real Madrid winger also failed to make a big impact. Wales made one change from the team that defeated

Northern Ireland 1-0 in Round of 16, with Robson-Kanu being brought into the front two alongside Bale. Sam Vokes dropped to the bench as a result. James Chester, Ashley and Ben Davies made up the customary back three, with Joe Ledley once again in the engine room, reports Xinhua. Belgium saw Jordan Lukaku starting at left back, with chief coach Marc Wilmots having no option but to also name young Jason Denayer alongside Toby Alderweireld in defence. Thomas Vermaelen was out through suspension, while Jan Vertonghen missed out due to an ankle injury in training. Yannick Carrasco came in on the right, with Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard in support of lone striker Romelu Lukaku. Belgium nearly kicked off the scoring in the sixth minute, when Romelu, Thomas Meunier and Hazard all squandered chances at point-blank range. But six minutes later, Nainggolan, the Roma midfielder with a blonde mohawk, tattoos on his neck and a smoking habit tolerated by Wilmots, unloaded a remarkable blast from 25 metres out past the diving Welsh goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey. Wales, however, came storming back before the

half-hour mark, nearly scoring on a Neil Taylor strike off an Aaron Ramsey cross that goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois brilliantly saved. A few minutes later, however, Ramsey - who has played a role in four of his squad’s last six goals - found Ashley unmarked in the area on a corner kick and the Dragons’ captain headed the ball home. Belgium appeared to have the edge in the early part of the second half but more defensive lapses reared their ugly head in the 55th minute, when some nifty dribbling by RobsonKanu put three defenders out of position and set up a leftfooted blast from just outside the six-yard box. One last goal on a header by Vokes, who had entered the game in the 80th minute and scored five minutes later, sealed the historic victory for Wales. Wales, whose last major soccer feat was a quarter-final berth at the 1958 World Cup, will next take on Cristiano Ronaldo-captained Portugal in the semi-finals on July 6 in Lyon. But they will have to make do in that match without creative force Ramsey, who picked up his second booking of the tournament late in Friday’s contest.

Nirmala qualifies for Olympics H y d e r a b a d, J u l 2 (Agencies): Nirmala Sheoran from Haryana qualified for the upcoming Rio Olympics on Friday after clocking a timing of 51.48 seconds in women’s 400m at the Senior National Inter-State Senior Athletics championships in Hyderabad. The Olympics qualifying mark for the event was set at 52.20 seconds. The 22-year-old has not competed in any major event in the last few months and was fully focussed on making the cut for Rio. Nirmala, who is coached by Vijender Singh, had shown her ambitions to qualify for the quadrennial event yesterday, after clocking a timing of 52.35 seconds during the heats at the GMC Balayogi Stadium. The Haryana girl led the race from the start to finish and recorded a personal best timing of 51.48 seconds to book the ticket to Rio and to better the previous meet mark set by MR Poovamma (51.73 seconds) in 2014.With the timing, she also became the 24th track-and-field athlete from India to qualify for Rio and increased the strength of the Indian Olympic contingent to 103. “It is the result of two years of real hard work and training,” Nirmala’s proud coach Vijender Singh said.

India draw Argentina 3-3 in Six Nations Hockey

Valencia, Jul 2 (Agencies): The Indian men’s hockey team came from behind to draw 3-3 in their penultimate match on Saturday at the Six Nations Invitational Tournament in Valencia. Argentina took the lead in the closing moments of the first quarter but Rupinder Pal Singh evened things with a penalty stroke in the first few minutes of the second quarter.

Argentina leapt ahead through two quick goals on the brink of half-time to lead 3-1. It was only in the fourth quarter that India stepped up their game. Ramandeep Singh scored India’s second goal with a fierce strike in the 47th minute, while Devindar Walmiki got a lovely one from a difficult angle in the 57th minute to make it 3-3. India will play their final game against Spain on Sunday.

Djokovic suffers shock defeat at Wimbledon

Djokovic makes his way back to the changing room after suffering a shock defeat on Saturday. London, Jul 2 (Agencies): Sam Querrey upset top-ranked Novak Djokovic in the third round of Wimbledon, 7-6 (6), 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (5), on Saturday, ending Djokovic’s run

of Grand Slam titles. Djokovic, 29, had won the past four major tournaments and set an Open era record on Wednesday by winning his 30th Grand Slam

singles match in a row. He also was chasing the Grand Slam, having won the first two major titles this year at the Australian Open and the French Open. Querrey, the No. 28 seed, won the first two sets Friday night before rain forced the players off Court 1 shortly after 8 p.m. When the match resumed Saturday around noon, Djokovic was in much better form, breaking Querrey twice to build 4-0 lead in 17 minutes before rain again suspended play. After a two-hour delay, Querrey was able to get one break back before Djokovic closed out the set. There was another quick shower at 1-1 in the fourth set. Both players saved numerous break point opportunities before Djokovic finally converted on his 12th try of the set to serve for the set at 5-4. But Querrey was broke him back in the next game, then held to go up by 6-5, when it started to rain again. The delay gave Djokovic an hour to mull having to hold

serve to stay in the match. But he held at love to send the set into a tiebreaker. The loose play and errors that plagued Djokovic throughout the match were his undoing in the tiebreaker, which ended with a forehand sailing wide. Querrey, a 28-year-old American, finished with 31 aces and 56 winners. He has never advanced past the fourth round at a major. He had beaten Djokovic only once in their nine previous meetings and had not won a set against him in three years. Rod Laver was the last man to complete the Grand Slam, in 1969, and the last man to win the first three majors in a season. Only one man won five straight Grand Slam titles: Don Budge, who claimed six in a row in 1937-38. Djokovic had not lost at a Grand Slam tournament since the final of the 2015 French Open. He was last beaten before the quarterfinals of a major in 2009, when he fell to Philipp Kohlschreiber in the third round.

Salgaocar, Sporting put up 3 demands before AIFF Panaji, Jul 2 (PTI): Salgaocar and Sporting Clube de Goa, which have pulled out of the I-League in protest against All India Football Federation’s re-structuring proposals, have put up three demands before the AIFF if they have to reconsider their decision of withdrawal. presented in a meeting held in Panaji among the owners of the clubs with the AIFF General Secretary Kushal Das, I-League CEO Sunando Dhar and IMGReliance’s Chirag Tanna. The two clubs owners Shivanand Salgaocar of Salgaocar and Peter Vaz of Sporting Clube de Goa, who decided to quit the I-League last week, put out a joint statement encompassing the three principal points. The three demands were: No forced relegation of I-League teams to a second tier league from the nation’s premier competition (All teams qualified for I-League should be part of the top league); No bidding process and no franchise fees for existing I-League clubs (merit being the only qualifying factor) and all governance issues should rest with AIFF exclusively. Das agreed to call a meeting of all I-League clubs in order to elicit their views on the matter. He said he will consult with the AIFF president and the executive committee along with their marketing partners IMG-Reliance to revert back with a final binding proposal on or before July 31. Salgaocar and Sporting Clube de Goa said that their decision to withdraw from the I-League stands unless they receive a final proposal/roadmap which includes the above mentioned three points.

Manchester Utd legend Ryan Giggs quits club

Ryan Giggs MANCHESTER, Jul 2 (Agencies): Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs is to leave after almost 30 years of service, the English Premier League club announced on Saturday in a widely expected

move following Jose Mourinho’s appointment as manager. The 42-year-old Welshman, an integral part of the great side built by Alex Ferguson, is keen to pursue a managerial career, having been assistant manager during the unsuccessful spells of David Moyes and then Louis van Gaal. “It has not been a decision that I have made lightly. I’ll take away so many special memories as well as a lifetime of experiences that will, I hope, serve me well in the future,” said Giggs in a statement issued by the club. “However, the time feels right and although I have no immediate plans to step into management, it is where I want to be.”
