IMPHAL, JUL 5: Reacting to the report that the United Committee Manipur (UCM) would oppose Centre’s move on the formation of Pan-Naga council, in the event a solution is arrived at between NSCN (I-M) and Government of India, Ministry of Home Affairs joint secretary (NE in-charge) Satyendra Garg dismissed such rumors saying “there was no consideration on this matter between the NSCN (I-M) and government of India.” While stating that it was just a figment of some people’s imagination, Garg said such people were creating false propaganda. Launching a seven-day training programme on commercial floriculture in Imphal yesterday, Garg stated that rumours and hearsays should not be taken as truths. Speaking to media persons after the inaugural session of the programme, Garg said that the peace process (with NSCN-IM) would not be affected by the demise of the outfit’s chairman. The peace process will go on and it will arrive at a solution, asserted the Joint Secretary. He further assured that all stake holders would be consulted before a final solution is worked out. On Sunday last, UCM president Elangbam Johnson, during the 16th Foundation Day programme of the committee at Imphal, said UCM would oppose any kind of move by the government for
formation of a pan-Naga council in Manipur. During several meetings with the Interlocutor for Naga talks, R.N. Ravi, Johnson said it had clearly tabled its stand, that “any sort of settlement that hurt the common interest of the Manipur will not be accepted”. UCM also made clear that the Centre could not bypass Manipur government while signing any important agreement with NSCN (I-M). Stating that New Delhi has initiated dialogue process with many UG groups which are under Suspension of Operation (SoO) Pact, Satyendra Garg exuded that an amicable solution can be explored. He added that the government of Manipur is also a party to the dialogue process. The Government of India would work for the welfare of Manipur, he said and went on to ask as to why there should be difference of opinions in implementing ILPS or a similar mechanism in the state. Garg added that the state government should resolve the issue by holding dialogue with all stake holders, he continued. He further made known that New Delhi had no objection to enforcement of Inner Line Permit System or a similar mechanism in Manipur. He however maintained that the state government should first address the tribal people’s sense of insecurity and bring a consensus or an understanding on the issue.
NSCN (K) to attend Panglong conference as ‘observer’
DIMAPUR, JUL 5 (NPN): In the latest development, the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-K) has reportedly said that it would attend the planned Panglong conference as an observer without a decision on whether to join the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA) signing, reports Xinhua. This development comes ahead of Myanmar’s state counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi’s proposed meeting with leaders of ethnic armed groups that have not signed the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA) in Yangon this month. NSCN (K) is one among the 13 NCA non-signatories. On June 24 last, NSCN (K) had affirmed that it would not be attending the Panglong Conference since the conference has “nothing to do with the Nagas’ demand for sovereignty”. Sub-committee-2 formed by Myanmar government on May 31, 2016 and tasked with holding talks with NCA non-signatories has reportedly discussed the possibility of attending the Union Peace Conference with the representatives of the NSCN (K) in Yangon on July 2. According to reports, the committee was still in discussion with the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) and the Arakan Army (AA), the remaining ethnic armed groups, to hold meetings in an attempt to ensure they attend the conference. Two of the seven nonceasefire signatory groups -- the United Wa State Army (UWSA) and the National Democratic Alliance Army (NDAA) made a decision to attend the Panglong conference following a meeting in Mongla last week with the Panglong Conference Preparatory Sub-Committee, led by
Dr. Tin Myo Win, the government’s peace negotiator. According to the peace negotiator, it is expected that some other non-ceasefire signatory armed groups would soon join talks with the state counselor.

Sumi women at the Tuluni festival. (NP)
Staff Reporter
DIMAPUR, JUL 5 (NPN): Stating that the Centre has set its focus on creating skilled manpower by setting up skill institutes in all the states, to meet the growing demand for skilled personnel, parliamentary secretary for Irrigation & Flood Control, Jacob Zhimomi on Tuesday urged the youngsters of the state to avail the benefits by opting skill development courses.
Jacob who was speaking as chief guest at pre-Tuluni celebration organized by Thilixu Village Youth Organization (TVYO) at Thilixu Public Ground here also admitted that everyone cannot be accommodated into government sectors. However, he suggested that the youth could be trained on various professions, where the state government has established a department headed by an
elected legislator. He further urged the public to understand that Naga society was a consumer society dependent on grants-in-aid from the central government where 70% of funds used for paying salaries and the remaining 30% was spent for development. Parliamentary secretary also made a clarion call for renewing the real significance of tribal festivals, which were fading from the traditional
and cultural style of the forefathers. To preserve the tradition, he said that assimilation of tradition and modernity should not be at the cost of ignoring the roots thereby gradually forgetting its originality. He also lauded TVYO for organizing the programme and encouraged them to work towards creating peace, unity and harmony in the society. Lamenting that celebration of festivals these days were observed with crops harvested with hard labour of other people and “hardly with our own labour”, he questioned “should we continue to observe festivals in this manner?” GPRN/NSCN, Naga Political Affairs Committee, Convenor, Kughalu Mulatonu also spoke on the significance of Tuluni festival. The programme was marked with various traditional performances such as folk songs and dances, ‘Thighale,’ ‘Thishole’ and ‘Imuno pi sujo sujo.’ Organizations like Western Sumi Youth Front, Highway Area Sumi Public Organization, Sumi Officers’ Union Dimapur, Chekiye village and other invitees attended the pre-Tuluni celebration.

Court sends Kejriwal’s PS, 4 others to 5-day CBI custody
Rajendra Kumar after producing him at Patiala House court in a corruption case, in New Delhi on Tuesday. (PTI) aide Ashok Kumar and Directors of Endeavour Systems Pvt Ltd (ESPL), Sandeep Kumar and Dinesh Kumar Gupta. CBI alleged that custodial interrogation of these accused was needed as some incriminating recoveries were likely to be made and during the ongoing probe, a lot of incriminating evidence have been recovered which showed that “undue advantage was given to ESPL in awarding contracts. It said the probe into the case was going on and some evidence has surfaced which may lead to offences of forgery and cheating, apart from charges of criminal conspiracy and under the Prevention of
Corruption Act. “The CBI is seeking police remand of 10 days for thorough interrogation and to unearth larger conspiracy in the role of accused persons. Keeping in view the facts and circumstances and submissions made by the parties, I deem it appropriate to grant five days PC remand of the accused persons, Special CBI Judge Arvind Kumar said. CBI alleged that Kumar was an “influential and highly placed bureaucrat. We cannot have a fair investigation without arresting him as he was intimidating the witnesses. CBI has tried to investigate the case with sincere efforts. There was
continuous intimidation to the witnesses and a fair probe was not possible. It said that interrogation was needed to unearth larger conspiracy, role of the accused and to know the exact chain of events and though they have joined the probe, they have not cooperated. Countering CBI claims, senior advocate Mohit Mathur, who appeared for Kumar, said that raids were conducted on all the places of his client and documents have been seized by the agency and since Kumar has already joined the probe, there was no ground for grant of police custody. He said that all allegations levelled against Kumar were “false and his name was “roped in in the case deliberetly. He also claimed that Intelligent Communication Systems India Ltd (ICSIL) officials, whose names were mentioned in the CBI FIR, have not been “touched in the case by the agency as ICSIL was a central government enterprise. Rebutting CBI’s contention that the accused were in touch with each other, the counsel said, “not a single paper has been placed on record which could show that these private persons have any relationship with me (Kumar).
SC dismisses plea against PM Modi on poll code NEW DELHI, JUL 5 (PTI): Supreme Court Tuesday dismissed a plea of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) worker accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of breaching the poll code during 2014-Lok Sabha elections by clicking a selfie with BJP symbol ‘lotus’ on the social media soon after casting his vote. A bench of Justices Dipak Misra and R Banumathi dismissed the petition of AAP worker Nishant Deshdipak Varma whose plea was also dismissed by the trial court and the High Court. Varma, a resident of Ahmedabad, had challenged the Gujarat High Court order and said in his plea that no investigation was made by the BJP government in Gujarat into the FIRs lodged against the then Chief Minister in the matter on the direction of the Election Commission. He had contended that the High Court was “erroneous and the Gujarat Police had acted in a mala fide manner to protect Modi by filing a closure report in the case. “Investigation agency involved in the present case has acted in a mala fide manner in order to protect the Respondent (Modi) from lawful prosecution for having committed various offences under the Representation of Peoples Act, 1951 and the Indian Penal Code, he had said in his plea.
Centre trying to run parallel govt through unelected persons in Delhi, says Sisodia NEW DELHI, JUL 5 (PTI): Turning up the heat on the Centre over the transfers of nine Delhi government officers, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia Tuesday described it as an attempt to run a “parallel government through “unelected persons in the national capital. “Centre is trying to run parallel government in Delhi through unelected persons undemocratically bypassing an elected government. Modi ji will have to answer as to why so many of our officers were transferred, Sisodia said. “Transfers are being done as part of conspiracy and dictatorship. The Centre is hatching conspiracy to hamper development works in unauthorized colonies, installation of CCTV cameras and construction in government schools by transferring officers. “Modi talks about federalism, is this federalism to weaken the Chief Minister Office?, he asked. The officers who have been transferred were not working on the political agenda of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal instead they were performing their duties on the agenda of an elected government for the people of Delhi, the Deputy CM said. Centre has transfered nine DANICS officers working with the city administration and out of them, eight were transfered to Andaman and
Hyd IS module: bullets, computers seized
NEW DELHI, JUL 5 (PTI): Taking forward its probe into the activities of Islamic State (IS) following the arrest of its five alleged operatives in Hyderabad, the NIA Tuesday searched various locations in the city and recovered 17 rounds of ammunition, besides computers and scanners which were used for online communication. According to the NIA, the premises of one of the arrested operatives Ibrahim was searched at Talab Katta from where a computer and scanner were seized. The equipment were allegedly used by those arrested to keep in touch with other suspected members of the IS. At the instance of Ibrahim, the anti-terror probe agency carried out searches at the residence of another accused Habeeb in Barkas area of Hyderabad and recovered 17 live rounds of 9 mm calibre. The NI A c ond uc ted searches at Bhawani Nagar in Talab Katta where another computer and scanner were seized, officials said, adding one of the arrested operatives
Ilyas told his interrogators that the system was used to scan the written ‘oath of allegiance’ to the IS Caliph the group had signed scanned and mailed to their handler. The group had given itself ‘Kunyat’ (aliases) for organisational purposes and also assigned tasks among themselves. Rizwan was coded as ‘Abu Hasan’ and assigned the job of ‘Mahasib’ (account keeper), Ibrahim got the name ‘Abu Abdur Rahman’ who was tasked to be ‘Raa’bit’ (communcation incharge), Illyas Yazdani was ‘Abu Mansoor’ and was the religious affairs incharge. Habeeb Mohammed assumed the alias of ‘Abu Shaiba’ and was the ‘Askari’ (in-charge of matters relating to firearms), while Fahad became ‘Abu Haleema’ and was yet to be assigned any task when they were arrested. All the five are in the NIA custody for 14 days since June 30. The agency has alleged that the five had acquired weapons and explosive materials to carry out terrorist attacks and were in touch with the banned
ED issues summons to Karti on money laundering case
NEW DELHI, JUL 5 (PTI): ED has issued summons to Karti Chidambaram, son of former Finance Minister P Chidamabram, in connection with its money laundering probe in the Aircel-Maxis deal of the 2G scam. Officials said the agency had issued a notice to Karti to present himself in person or through an authorised representative and submit personal financial documents and those related to a firm this week but it is understood Karti sought more time to reply. The agency has granted him fresh time to submit documents within the first fortnight of this month. This is the first time that a notice has been issued to Karti in the case which is being investigated since over an year. Sources said the summons have been issued by the Investigating Officer of the case and Deputy Director Rajeshwar Singh. The probe pertains to firms identified as Advantage Strategic Consulting Private Limited and Chess Global Advisory Services Pvt Ltd, where Karti had been a director, and a few others for alleged violations under the stringent Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The agency, along with the I-T department, had conducted search and seizure operations on the business premises of Chess Global firm in Chennai in the presence of Karti last December. While Karti has denied any wrongdoing and has reiterated his cooperation with probe agencies, his father P Chidambaram had accused the government of launching a “malicious onslaught against his family. “If the government wishes to target me, they should
do so directly, not harass friends of my son who carry on their own businesses and have nothing to do with politics, the Congress leader had said. The agency has sent Letters Rogatory (judicial requests) to Singapore, Malaysia and few other countries in order to obtain more details in the case even as it is mulling sending a team to these countries to speed up the probe. In August last year, the Enforcement Directorate had issued summonses to two directors of a firm linked to Karti in connection with the probe in this case. ED’s probe had found that Rs 26 lakh has been allegedly sent from the firm to Aircel Televentures. The Aircel-Maxis deal is being probed by both ED and CBI and the case is a part of the overall probe in the 2G scam case. ED is also getting in touch with a number of countries like UAE, South Africa, US, Greece, Spain, Switzerland, France, Malaysia, Thailand, Sri Lanka and British Virgin Islands on a reciprocal arrangement basis to obtain further leads in this case. The probe agency had also filed a charge sheet in the Aircel-Maxis deal and had named former Telecom Minister Dayanidhi Maran, his brother Kalanithi, his wife Kavery Kalanithi and few other individuals and two companies as accused in the case. The agency had also told the court that further probe relating to Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) approval in the Aircel-Maxis deal and related issues are subject of further investigation under anti-money laundering laws. It had said the approval was given when Chidambaram was Finance Minister in 2006.
has 24 sanctioned DANICS posts. Centre wants to take the number to 31. But in Delhi, 157 officers are working against the sanctioned strength of 309. Centre is claiming that transferring officers is its prerogative, he said. Centre should tell it is its prerogative to destroy an elected Delhi Government and not allow us to work for the people of Delhi. Under which democratic process, Centre is claiming that it is its right of transferring officers, Sisodia said. “Central government has only intention to threat officers working with Delhi government. They only want to send a strong message among officers that if they work on our behest, they will be transferred to Andaman and Nicobar and sent to jail, Sisodia said. He said that last year, the then Delhi VAT Commissioner Vijay Kumar had been transferred by the Lt Governor to Lakshadweep despite our request just before Diwali when tax collection is on the peak. But, Kumar has recently been transferred to the LG office. “In Delhi, the city government issues transfer order of any officer whether he is working with NDMC, Lt Governor. But in case of Vijay Kumar and LG secretary SCL Das, they did not even inform the Services department of the Delhi government about their transfers, he said.
Manish Sisodia Nicobar islands. Yesterday, CBI arrested Kejriwal’s Principal Secretary Rajendra Kumar, Deputy Secretary and three others for allegedly abusing their official position and favouring a private company in securing government contracts worth over Rs 50 crore. Interestingly, the CM has not reacted to the arrest of Kumar and his deputy secretary so far. Sisodia accused the Centre of forcing the Delhi government to make do with only 157 DANICS officers as against the sanctioned strength of 309 posts. The message of the BJP government to the officers is not to work for us, he said. Addressing a press conference here, Sisodia accusing the Centre of giving false statements on the sanctioned posts of DANICS officers in Andaman and Nicobar. “Andaman and Nicobar

The NIA had on June 22 lodged a common FIR against IS for “criminal conspiracy to wage war against the Government of India by collecting weapons and explosive materials to target public places, religious sites and sensitive government buildings in various parts of country. According to the Central agency, the gang was preparing improvised explosive devices (IEDs) for carrying out blasts, and was being guided by an online handler, suspected to be based in Iraq or Syria. Besides explosive material, the agency had recovered two semiautomatic pistols, ammunition, an air gun with telescopic sight and shooting practice target boards, a large number of digital gadgets including six laptops, about 40 mobile phones, 32 SIM cards, and a large number of hard disks, memory cards, pen drives and tabs during its searches.

NEW DELHI, JUL 5 (PTI): A special court on Tuesday sent Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s Principal Secretary Rajendra Kumar and four others to five days CBI remand, as the agency claimed that “lies were being spread about the IAS officer that he was holding the Delhi government like the mythological ‘Seshnag’. “It is a historical case in Indian democracy. The accused was a public servant acting as principal secretary and the investigation was fairly conducted. Dignity and purity of public institutions have to be maintained. A pack of lies is being spread in the media that Rajendra Kumar is holding the government like a ‘Seshnag’ and if he goes, all the (Delhi) government will go, the CBI told the special court. In Indian mythology, Seshnag is the king of all snakes (or nagas), has numerous hoods and is said to hold all the planets of the universe on his hoods. The court sent Kumar and four others, arrested in an alleged corruption case, to five-day CBI custody, with the agency also claiming that the “influential IAS officer was intimidating witnesses. Besides Kumar, the others remanded were Deputy Secretary in Kejriwal’s office Tarun Sharma, Kumar’s alleged close

Period of ailments
t’s a regular feature during the onset of monsoon when many people fall sick either with viral fever, cough or various tropical ailments, both water and air borne diseases. Those who cannot afford the expensive modern method of a series of pre-diagnosis ‘tests’ and subsequently prescribing expensive drugs; they have either to seek remedies from unqualified and self-styled ayurvedic experts, herbalists(whose tribe is growing) or those traditional quacks. Government hospitals do not provide life saving drugs and in some, patients even have to buy cotton, bandage etc. In a number of government hospitals, those who cannot afford to buy medicines often are beneficiaries of donors or medical practitioners. Those living in foothill areas like Dimapur, which are the headquarters of various tropical diseases such as malaria, typhoid, diarrhoea, dysentery, amoebiasis, encephalitis, UTI etc do have to spend a lot. These expenditures are besides many other diseases afflicting children on one side and cattle diseases such as anthrax and avian flu on the other are not uncommon in Dimapur. Health workers say that monsoon also heralds the onset of various diseases related with the environment. Monsoon does reduce the body immunity and makes it susceptible to many diseases commonly associated with the weather. There have been some severe cases of malaria resulting in fatalities though health authorities are not willing to accept these reports until they are in possession of proof. Malaria has not been contained in the state and perhaps many states in the region located on the plains. The onset of monsoon also heralds the arrival of heat and humidity and by July and August, the scorching sun will add to the woes. The heat and humidity of the summer months cannot be worse in foothill areas and in particular, Nagaland’s commercial capital-Dimapur- which suffers greatly due to long hours of load shedding by the Power department. Dimapur’s stagnant water in clogged drains continue to provide the best conditions that help spread of mosquitoes. Malaria, encephalitis and now dengue are as serious and hazardous less known diseases such as fungal infections or skin rashes, allergy, dehydration are also common. Hygiene in public eating places and open markets are often taken for granted to the extent of being neglected. It is true also that people have accepted monsoon diseases as part of the cycle and this is a dreadful philosophy which prevents people from improving the conditions of health and also the health care and public hygiene. Awareness and action of public hygiene is lacking which can be seen from the filth abounding in market places where food items are purchased everyday. Even as there is total lack of drainage, there seems to be abundance of garbage. There is also an urgent need for regular and thorough inspection of all food items and cooking places of restaurants and hotels to ensure that cooking medium ,meat and items are not of high quality and standard. As with education, where private institutions have been at the forefront in providing high academic standard and bringing up future administrators, engineers and professionals; even in health, it is the private institutions that have contributed immensely. Health authorities need to tackle diseases by coordinating with private hospitals and clinics and providing whatever necessary assistance in the interest of the public.
DailyDevotion Don’t Plan Without God Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass. —Psalm 37:5 Don’t plan without God. God seems to have a delightful way of upsetting the plans we have made, when we have not taken Him into account. We get ourselves into circumstances that were not chosen by God, and suddenly we realize that we have been making our plans without Him— that we have not even considered Him to be a vital, living factor in the planning of our lives. And yet the only thing that will keep us from even the possibility of worrying is to bring God in as the greatest factor in all of our planning. In spiritual issues it is customary for us to put God first, but we tend to think that it is inappropriate and unnecessary to put Him first in the practical, everyday issues of our lives. If we have the idea that we have to put on our “spiritual face” before we can come near to God, then we will never come near to Him. We must come as we are. Don’t plan with a concern for evil in mind. Does God really mean for us to plan without taking the evil around us into account? “Love…thinks no evil” (1 Corinthians 13:4-5). Love is not ignorant of the existence of evil, but it does not take it into account as a factor in planning. When we were apart from God, we did take evil into account, doing all of our planning with it in mind, and we tried to reason out all of our work from its standpoint. Don’t plan with a rainy day in mind. You cannot hoard things for a rainy day if you are truly trusting Christ. Jesus said, “Let not your heart be troubled…” (John 14:1). God will not keep your heart from being troubled. It is a command— “Let not….” To do it, continually pick yourself up, even if you fall a hundred and one times a day, until you get into the habit of putting God first and planning with Him in mind.

Post-mortem to Rev. Lano Longchar, Public cautionary message for lightning A tribute the King’s messenger L T ightning is defined or understood as, the occurrence of a natural electrical discharge of very short duration and high voltage between a cloud and the ground or within a cloud, accompanied by a bright flash and typically also thunder. It literally means, “a tremendous flash of lightning”. If the time delay between seeing the flash (lightning) and hearing a thunderclap is less than 30 seconds, you should be in, or seek a safe location. Whenever you hear or see a lighting, it’s a reminder that you are at risk and need to take precautionary measures. It is learnt that a large no of people have been killed by lightning strikes across Northern and Eastern India just in the last few days due to torrential rains in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh. In Bihar itself, 57 people died and 37 others sustained severe injuries. There is an urgent need to provide information to the people about the steps to be taken when indoors, outdoors and if infected by a lightning strike. Following are a list Do’s and Dont’s for Lightning Safety. 1. When Thunder starts to strike: take shelter in a home, large building or substantial fully enclosed building, preferably protected with a lightning protection system. Stay indoors and avoid travel if possible. Prevention is better than cure. 2. Avoid areas where you will be the highest object: If you are caught in an open field with no nearby shelter drop down and crouch with hands on knees, rocking up on the balls of your feet. (The idea is to make as little less contact with the ground as possible.) Never lie down flat
or place your hands on the ground. 3. Certain locations are extremely hazardous during thunderstorms: No place is absolutely free from a lightning threat; however, some places are safer than others. Avoid lakes, beaches or open water, fishing from a boat or dock, riding on golf carts, farm equipment, motor cycles or bicycles. If caught on high ground or in an open area, seek shelter in a low area. Take shelter in tunnels, subways, even ditches or caves if necessary—but never under a tree! 4. Stay off the telephone: Avoid contact with Software Defined Radios (SDR), toasters, hairdryers and any electrical appliance which has electrical wirings. In your home, don’t stand near open windows, doorways or metal piping. Stay away from the TV, plumbing, sinks, tubs, radiators and stove. 5. Wait atleast 30 (thirty) minutes after a lightning storm has passed to resume outdoor activities. 6. Unplug unnecessary electrical appliances (to isolate them from the main power supply which may conduct a power surge during a lightning storm). 7. If at work: Look for darkening skies and increased wind. If you hear thunder then you are close enough to be struck by lightning. Keep on monitoring local media for updates and warning instructions. 8. If at home: Close windows and doors, and secure objects outside the home(eg. Furniture, bins patio etc). Ensure that children and animals (domestic pets) are inside proper shelters. 9. Avoid taking bath or showers the
time of lightning. This is because lightning can travel through metal pipes. 10. Avoid staying near communication towers (TV dish or Mobile towers). 11. If on foot: Response- To go to a safe shelter immediately. Avoid contact with metal structures and constructions with metal sheeting. Ideally find shelter in a low lying area and make sure that the spot chosen is not likely to flood. Do not shelter under trees as these conduct electricity. 12. If travelling: Response - Get off bicycles, motor-cycles or farm vehicles. Get to a safer shelter. During a storm, remain in your vehicle until help arrives or the storm has passed.(The metal roof will provide protection, if you are not touching metal inside; windows should be up; park away from trees and power lines. If there is a tornado involved in a storm, evacuate the vehicle and seek shelter. Treatment for Lightning: If at all possible, give basic first aid to the injured and rushed to the nearest hospital. People struck by lightning carry no electrical charge and can be handled safely. Check for broken bones, loss of hearing and eyesight. A victim of lightning strike can suffer varying degrees of burning. Check the impact point and where the electricity left the body. Many lightning casualties occur because people ignore these precursors. EDUCATE YOURSELF AND EDUCATE OTHERS TOO. BE SAFE. his tribute is being written and presented to Rev. Lano Longchar, the King’s Messenger on behalf of the International Evangelistic Fellowship (IEF) Kichutip Ward unit, Mokokchung town. Rev. Lano Longchar, the captain of our ship, was a man of God, a man for all seasons, a prince of preachers who is known not only in our land but nationally and abroad for his spirit-filled preaching and power of miracles which he received from his Lord who he served and trusted well. He was fervent soul winner, an editor, a writer, hymn composer and singer who loved to sing, a spirit-filled evangelist, a charismatic preacher of our day. He was soft-spoken but when he drew the net, there was multitude of fish in the net. We had won thousands of souls to Christ through his powerful, persuasive preaching. He was truly a humble servant of God, a strong man humbled by the power of Almighty God like Saul of Tarsus. He served God faithfully who he loved so well. He was needful for us in the flesh but God called
him home. Rev. Lano was a shining light which he got from the one who said “I am the light of the world”, his life has been spent on the battlefield of this world fighting the fight of faith. Now, the battle is over and he has laid down the sword. We believe he has knelt down at the feet of Jesus, his great commander, looked at His sweet face and said “Lord Jesus, I led the people straight”. He is now with Rev. Rikum Ao, his dear and beloved predecessor and the first President of International Evangelistic Fellowship Mokokchung. The pen that was his sword, upon the desk lies still. The voice that rang like a trumpet no more the air does fill. The feet rest always ran to do his Master’s will. The heart lies cold that once beat warm God’s mission to fulfil. Who will preach with content, power and passion urging us to give our best for Jesus and His cause each moment that we live. (To be concluded) S. The mystic rainbow in the woods of Chishilimi
(From previous issue) In the year 1972, Ms. Yahoi, a 12 year old Konyak girl, who was dumb from birth, saw an unusual vision in a jungle. A rainbow appeared around her and she saw three men in white clothes approaching towards her. In the sight of this frightening vision, she yelled out, “Pull me out! three men are coming” and the dumb girl for the first time began to speak. The three men in white clothes then spoke, “This rainbow is the Naga national flag which I have given to the Nagas. Tomorrow your chicken will crow three times.” Rev. Vevozo was once asked in Jerusalem, “How is it that the Nagas have a rainbow flag with a six-pointed star when other nations have only five-pointed star on their flags?”, to which he simply replied, “It is given by the Lord our God to the Nagas”. Then God spoke to them through an American woman, “I have given the rainbow flag to the Nagas. It is not inscribed by the Nagas on their own accord. I have given two flags to mankind, one to the Israelites and the other to the Nagas”. Some scholars accused Israel that the six-pointed star, the hexagram, is the supreme symbol of satanic tyranny and it is demonic. The Jews, however, believed that the symbol is not a hexagram, but the “Star of David”, the “back part of David’s protective war shield”. King Solomon was the one who selected the symbol. Perhaps, the Nagas and the Israelites are the only two nations to adopt a six-pointed star as the emblem of their national flags. Every nation for that matter has its own myths, legends and stories and every flag has its own history. The Scottish legend goes that the night before the Pictish King Angus II, led his forces into battle against the English King Aethelstans of Angles and Saxons, King Angus had a vision in which he saw St. Andrew promising triumph in the battle. King Angus’ troops were struck in the next morning by the sight of a huge white Saltire shining across a bright blue sky. The Scottish believe that this omen led to their victory against the English King and the Saltire accordingly found its place in the Scottish flag. Reader’s Post Sir,
Gratitude to Nagaland Post
Through this column I would like to thank the Editor and Staff of Nagaland Post for the wonderful coverage of the funeral service of our Leader Mr. Isak Chishi Swu Chairman, NSCN(IM) from the beginning till his last resting place. Thousand of people from all walks of life came and attended the service. But at the same time there were thousand who couldn’t make it. But I believe after going through your newspaper it has enabled people across the state to pay their tribute to the Dear Leader. May your team continue to be an inspiration in serving the people of Nagaland. Khuvishe Hollo
To the director, RD department, Kohima
Subject: Complaint Against Continuous Absence of BDO and Staff and Demand for Disciplinary Action. Sir,
With utmost recpect and honour, the Mangkolemba Ao Lanur Telongjem (MALT) would like to seek your attention regarding the non functioning of the Block Development Office (RD) in Mangkolemba for more than 3 (three) years. Mangkolemba being one of the largest Sub-Division in Nagaland covering 3 ranges of Jangpetkong, Japukong and Tsurangkong with 56 villages, the role and duty of the Block Development Officer and the staff becomes very vital. However, the BDO office is completely non functional since the joining of Shri. IMTILEPDEN AO, BDO Mangkolemba on 16 September 2013 to till date. This has given rise to many loop holes and grievances for the people of Mangkolemba sub division. The MALT since its inception in 2013 has visited the BDO office time and again and has submitted report to various Addl. Deputy Commissioners. The MALT has visited the BDO office 2 (two) times even in 2016; on 30 March & 10 June 2016. To our great dismay and just like on previous occasions, the office was found empty with no staff and officer. Consequently, MALT issued a press release on 13 June 2016 in the local print media about the absence of the BDO. Yet, till date, there is no steps being initiated by the concern department against the erring officer and the staff. The MALT questions the seriousness of the Director of the RD department in regard to dealing with disobedient, irresponsible and non performing officers and staff. The MALT cannot comprehend as to how any department or office can run/ function with zero attendance, leaving aside about the question of delivering service to the public. Hence, the MALT serves an ULTIMATUM to the Director, RD department with the following demands to be met on or before 31 July 2016: to take disciplinary action against the erring BDO and his staff, to resume complete functioning of the BDO office in Mangkolemba, a new BDO be deployed in Mangkolemba as we have lost faith in IMTILEPDEN AO, the present incumbent and his sincerity towards his profession and the general public. We also question his capacity to deliver service. The MALT will take any failure from the concern department as turning a blind eye to Mangkolemba sub division and we will be compelled to take up radical steps as our fight against corruption. Bendanglemba, Media Cell, MALT & Mern Kubzar, Media Cell, MALT

D E H R A D U N, J U L 5 (PTI): The rescue operations launched in the wake of heavy rains and cloudbursts in hilly state of Uttarakhand were wound up on Tuesday in most places except in Bastadi in Pithoragarh district which bore the maximum brunt with highest number of casualties at 17. Rescue operations have been completed everywhere except in Bastadi which was the worst hit, Additional Secretary, Disaster Management, C Ravishankar said. Eight persons are said to be still missing in Bastadi, he added. Rescue teams helped by two JCB machines and dog squads are now conducting operations towards Chandrabhaga river flowing underneath Bastadi village. A series of cloudbursts and torrential rains on July 1 claimed 20 lives in Pithoragarh and Chamoli districts. Around a dozen persons are still missing from both districts. 17 bodies were pulled out from the debris in the villages of Pithoragarh district whereas three were recovered from Chamoli. Bastadi, Nauleda, Rigolia, Nachni and Charma are the villages affected by cloudbursts in Pithoragarh whereas Jakhni, Waduk, Gauli and Sirji villages were
affected by the flashfloods triggered by torrential rains in Chamoli. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Harish Rawat toured the Ghaat area of Chamoli district which was the worsthit by the flashloods and met the affected families. He conveyed his condolences to them and assured them of all possible help. Rawat also asked the district administration to solve the problems faced by the affected families on a priority basis. Relief funds must reach the affected families soon and they should be evacuated to safe locations, he said. The Disaster Control Room should monitor the situation on a daily basis and send a report to the administration, he added.
Jakhni village worst affected
Four days after flashfloods wreaked havoc in Chamoli district, this village in Ghat block looks like a blighted land today with houses washed away and the entire area strewn all over with huge boulders. Jakhni was the worst-hit village in the district in the recent flashfloods and landslides triggered by torrential rains which have claimed at least
18 lives in the state. Balbir Lal, who lives in a small settlement beneath Jakhni called Dhelabagad, is still struggling to overcome the shock of seeing his wife being swallowed by a deluge of mud and slush that gushed into his home in the wake of the torrential rains in the wee hours of July 1. Her heart-rending cries as she was sucked into the depths of a stream of mud still seem to haunt Balbir who struggled for several hours in a veritable sea of pebbles and boulders to save her, injuring himself badly in the process. “Though a downpour started at 12 PM on June 30, everything was okay till the wee hours of June 1 when suddenly huge boulders came riding over a furious wave of mud and slush from Jakhni side and hit our homes. We nervously ran towards the hills but the deluge had arrived there even before we could. I somehow saved myself but failed to save her (his wife). The image of my wife sinking into the depths still haunts me and would perhaps continue to do so for the rest of my life,” says 55-year-old Balbir. A picturesque settlement till four days ago, Dhelabagad has turned into a heap of sand with all temporary houses razed to the ground and several of their occupants missing. The problems of electricity, water and commutation persist in all the villages of Ghaat area with five pedestrian bridges washed away in the heavy rains. There is a barrage site of a hydro-electricity company in the area where the loss has been maximum in Jakhni. Locals maintain that the disiltation tank and diversion wares installed by the company there also contributed hugely to the destruction.
NEW DELHI, JUL 5 (PTI): Government is likely to announce successor to Raghuram Rajan, the outgoing governor of RBI, after Prime Minister Narendra Modi returns from his five-day, four nation tour of Africa, a top official said today. “A new governor will be named after Prime Minister returns from his Africa tour on July 11,” the official said. Rajan’s three-year term will come to an end on September 4, as he last month announced that he would return to academia and not seek a second term. Top contenders for the post are former deputy governors of the Reserve Bank of India Subir Gokarn and Rakesh Mohan. Gokarn is an Executive Director at the International Monetary Fund, a post previously held by Mohan. Others who are said to be in the fray for job include SBI chief Arundhati Bhattacharya and Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das. Government’s Chief Economic Adviser Arvind Subramanian
and the RBI’s current Deputy Governor Urjit Patel are also considered to be in reckoning. Incidentally, Patel got a three-year extension as RBI Deputy Governor in January. Traditionally, Prime Minister picks the RBI Governor after consultation with the finance minister. The same process is likely to be followed this time around with Modi choosing Rajan’s successor after consulting Arun Jaitley. Sources said once a new governor is named, he will become an Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in the central bank to allow smooth transition. Rajan, who will have the shortest tenure as RBI Governor since liberilsation began in 1991, decided not to seek a second term after unbridled political attacks on him was led by BJP MP Subramanian Swamy. All RBI Governors in past 23 years have got second term - from Dr C Rangarajan (1992-97), Bimal Jalan (199703), YV Reddy (2003-08) to D Subbarao (2003-08). Rajan will break that chain.

SC raps Google, Yahoo for failing to check pre-birth test ads NEW DELHI, JUL 5 (PTI): Supreme Court Tuesday pulled up online search engines like Google, Yahoo and Microsoft for failing to check advertisements pertaining to pre-natal sex determination saying they were patently violating Indian law. A bench of Justice Dipak Misra and R Banumathi asked the Centre to convene a meeting of technical experts
and the search engines within 10 days to explore ways to block such advertisements. “They are patently violating the Indian law and are saying that they cannot do anything. It is not acceptable and this needs to be controlled. They can’t put anything which is against the law of the country,” the bench said. The court said it did not have the expertise and the
Centre should say how and what steps should be taken to control advertisements on sex determination tests on the search engines. It directed the Centre to hold the meeting and also allow the petitioner, Dr Sabu Mathew George, to participate in it. George has filed the PIL seeking court’s intervention in view of decreasing number of girl child in the country.
No development activities in state: NPCC (From p-1) On disqualification of eight Congress MLAs, Therie said that second hearing was clubbed together with the case of NCP, while the third hearing has been scheduled on Friday. He further said that hearing would continue every week and that NPCC would not stop till the matter was closed. NPCC also alleged the formation of North East Democratic Alliance
(NEDA) as anti-Congress and claimed that its convener, Himanta Biwas Sarma did not have any credibility in North East and that BJP would not be able grow in NE. He further said NPCC would monitor all 11 districts and 60 constituencies with priority to the backward districts through ‘war room’ and informed that next allotment for new vehicles would be made available in few months.

From an Indian point of view, Bhattacharya said India will need to “re-examine” and “re-negotiate” the trade access with the EU and the UK which she noted may or may not be “good” for India. Among the most powerful and influential women in the world of finance, Bhattacharya said Brexit is “not the right thing” as the more connected and more collaborative the world gets today, “it will be better for everyone”. “The less inclusive we become, I think it is not good for the world at large,” she said. Bhattacharya noted that the Brexit will not have too much of an impact on SBI directly.

NEW YORK, Jul 5 (PTI): India will need to “re-examine” and “re-negotiate” the trade access with the EU and UK after Brexit, according to SBI Chairperson Arundhati Bhattacharya who called the development a “step back” amid globalisation. “I believe that we will benefit more by globalisation. Brexit is actually a step back in the sense that you are going back from being connected to being on your own. If you look at it ideologically, I would say Brexit is not something that probably is good for the world,” Bhattacharya said during a live Facebook chat with the former chief digital officer at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New NIDC chairman, Tovihoto Ayemi (MLA) inaugurating Plant Fashion on Tuesday at Latika York Sree Sreenivasan. cinema complex, Nyamo Lotha road, Dimapur. NASA’s spacecraft enters Jupiter’s orbit Theresa May leading the race for next British PM
Houston, Jul 5 (PTI): NASA’s solar-powered Juno spacecraft successfully entered Jupiter’s orbit today after a five-year journey from Earth, in a giant step to understand the origin and evolution of the king of planets and the solar system. As America celebrated its Independence Day, mission controllers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) erupted in cheers when the USD 1.1 billion Juno spacecraft sent home the news of successfully executing a 35-minute engine burn that put the probe into the planned orbit around Jupiter. With its suite of nine science instruments, Juno will study the existence of a solid planetary core, map Jupiter’s intense magnetic field, measure the amount of water and ammonia in the deep atmosphere and observe auroras on our solar system’s largest planet. The mission also will let us take a big step forward in our understanding of how giant planets form and the role these titans played in putting together the rest of the solar system, NASA said. As our primary example of a giant planet, Jupiter also
London, Jul 5 (PTI): Britain’s ruling Conservative party today began the first round of voting to choose a new party leader who will succeed David Cameron as Prime Minister with home secretary Theresa May emerging as a clear frontrunner. May is currently leading the race, followed by energy minister Andrea Leadsom who received the backing of former London mayor Boris Johnson yesterday. UK justice secretary Michael Gove, work and pensions secretary Stephen Crabb and former defence minister
can provide critical knowledge for understanding the planetary systems being discovered around other stars. The Juno spacecraft launched on August 5, 2011 from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. “With Juno, we will investigate the unknowns of Jupiter’s massive radiation belts to delve deep into not only the planet’s interior, but into how Jupiter was born and how our entire solar system evolved,” said
NASA administrator Charlie Bolden. Confirmation of a successful orbit insertion was received from Juno tracking data monitored at the navigation facility at JPL in California, as well as at the Lockheed Martin Juno operations centre in Colorado. The telemetry and tracking data were received by NASA’s Deep Space Network antennas in the US and Australia. Preplanned events lead-
ing up to the orbital insertion engine burn included changing the spacecraft’s attitude to point the main engine in the desired direction and then increasing the spacecraft’s rotation rate from 2 to 5 revolutions per minute (RPM) to help stabilise it. The burn of Juno’s main engine began at 8:48 am IST, decreasing the spacecraft’s velocity by 542 meters per second and allowing Juno to be captured in orbit around Jupiter.
Terror charges against several suspects in Dhaka

Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the killing of the 20 hostages and two police officers during the 12-hour siege that ended after the army stormed the Holey Artisan Bakery popular with expats in
Aus PM Turnbull rejects calls to quit after poor poll Melbourne, Jul 5 (PTI): Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull today dismissed calls for his resignation but accepted “full responsibility” for the poor show by the conservative coalition that has left him on the brink of losing office. Turnbull’s comments came after Saturday’s general election failed to produce a clear winner and raised the prospect of a hung parliament. Turnbull’s conservative coalition secured 70 seats, opposition Labor 67, with 80 per cent of the vote counted. Eight seats are still in doubt, according to Australian Broadcasting Corporation. The major parties need 76 seats to form a majority government. Vote counting is expected to drag on for days, possibly weeks, leaving Australia in a political vacuum. Labor leader Bill Shorten yesterday asked the prime minister to quit, saying, “Mr Turnbull clearly doesn’t know what he is doing. Quite frankly, I think he should quit.” But Turnbull rejected his demand. “He would say that, wouldn’t he?” Turnbull reporters. “He obviously couldn’t think of anything else better to say,” Turnbull said. He also acknowledged the massive swing against the Coalition and the “disillusionment” of voters towards the major political parties. “There are lessons to be learnt from this election,” he said. Turnbull said more than three million votes would be added to the count in coming days and while he remained confident of securing a majority, he accepted responsibility for the Coalition’s low vote. the diplomatic zone here, killing six attackers and capturing one alive. Hostages killed include 19-year-old Indian girl Tarishi Jain. Nine Italians, 7 Japanese, one American of Bangladeshi origin, and two Bangladeshis were also among the dead. Meanwhile, Foreign Minister A H Mahmood Ali briefed foreign diplomats stationed in Dhaka highlighting the current situation and steps taken by the government so far after the Friday’s attack. Police on Saturday night
released the photos of the five militants and identified them as ‘Akash’, ‘Bikash’, ‘Don’, ‘Bandhon’ and ‘Ripon’. But, the Islamic State named the five gunmen in photos they released hours after the attack as Abu Umayer, Abu Salma, Abu Rahiq, Abu Muslim and Abu Muharib. Regarding differences between names, the police chief cited the trend among militants to use aliases. Three other gunmen were all from well-to-do families and studied at Dhaka’s top English medium schools. However, one of the persons shown in five photos released by police was identified as Saiful Islam Chowkider, a chef at Holey Artisan Bakery. Some of the hostages are being quizzed by the police to get useful information in tracing the origins of the attack. The Italian Foreign Ministry in travel advisories said it could not exclude the possibility of further attacks in Bangladesh. It asked people to exercise the “utmost prudence” while travelling in Bangladesh and limit their activities to only what was necessary.

Dhaka, Jul 5 (PTI): Bangladesh today pressed anti-terrorism charges against several suspects and identified the fifth assailant in the country’s worst terror attack as authorities intensified efforts to unravel the plot behind the brazen assault in which 22 people were slaughtered by Islamists. The charges against the suspects were filed at Gulshan Police Station at midnight, Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Haque said. Islamist gunmen stormed a popular restaurant in Dhaka’s diplomatic enclave late on Friday and killed 22 people, most of them foreigners from Italy, Japan, India and the US in an attack claimed by the Islamic State terror group. “We filed the case under the Anti-terrorism Act... five men have been made accused by their names and several others as unidentified accused,” the duty officer of the police station said. Police yesterday said two persons were in their custody who will be quizzed later as they are unwell. Also today investigators said they had identified the

He said the prize also gave him the opportunity to meet other writers and creative artists, which “inspires
me to stop being a lazy bum and do better”. Asked how he had approached his story, Lidudumalingani said he wanted to show empathy for his protagonists but also “not try to lie to ourselves”. “Some of the ways in which villages operate are problematic and I wanted to put that across, but I also wanted to put that across in a respectful manner and not look down on people’s views,” he said. The other Caine shortlisted writers, whose stories you can read or listen to here, were: Abdul Adan, Lesley Nneka Arimah, Tope Folarin and Bongani Kona.

hiding behind philosophies. I was never good at that, I never tried to be good on that.” “I was always much more aggressive in my approach, with the risks that obviously can bring. It would be easy, even honest and pragmatic from my side, to focus on [the fact] we don’t qualify for the Champions League. It would be quite pragmatic to say: ‘Let’s work and let’s try to be back to the Champions League, be back to the top four.’ I am not good on that and I didn’t want to be good on that.” “I am more aggressive. We want to win. I want everything. I want to win matches, I want to play well,
and the history of this club and what the fans expect from me. I have great motivation and I can say that I am where I want to be.” Mourinho also found time for what appeared to be a trademark subtle dig at Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, who last won the title in 2003/04, adding: “There are some managers who last won a title 10 years ago, some of them the last time was never. The last time I won a title was one year ago.” “I play against myself. I feel I have to prove, not to the others, but to myself. I will never be able to work without success - that is my nature.” United won their first trophy since Ferguson’s departure when they lifted the FA Cup last season under Louis van Gaal but Mourinho says simply improving on the efforts of Van Gaal and David Moyes will not be deemed acceptable. “I could not approach this job in a defensive point of view by saying the best we did was fourth and the FA Cup,” he said. “I can’t go there. The last three years, I want to forget. I don’t want the players to start by thinking we have to do better. Doing better is to finish fourth. I want to be aggressive - we want to win.”
Is l a m a b ad, J u l 5 (IANS): Former Pakistan tearaway pacer Shoaib Akhtar on Tuesday turned down Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh’s claims that he beat Singh and star batsman Yuvraj Singh, terming it a “joke”. Reacting to Harbhajan’s claims, the 40-year-old said the Indian offie “exaggerated” the whole episode, which he claimed was just an incident of arm-wrestling. “I am friends with both Harbhajan and Yuvraj and whatever happened in Islamabad hotel room was a joke,” Akhtar was quoted as saying by Geo news. “Harbhajan exaggerated the whole story as despite being an aggressive player, it is not in my nature to beat my juniors. It was an incident of arm-wrestling.” Earlier, Harbhajan said in an interview, that Akhtar pummeled him along with Yuvraj during their tour to the neighbouring country in 2004. “Shoaib once threatened me that he’d barge into my room to hit me. I told him ‘we will see who hits who’. Nonetheless, I was scared because of his bulky physique,” the 36year-old told a TV channel.
OAI eyes welfare of past & present Olympians Goyat one win away from New Delhi, Jul 4 (IANS): With the aim to look after the welfare of past and current athletes, the Olympics Association of India (OAI) was on Monday launched by former Olympic silver medallist and junior Information and Broadcasting minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore here. Founded by five-time Olympian Shiva Keshavan (luge) as its president, the organisation boasts of acclaimed stars like former India hockey captain Viren Rasquinha as vice president, Malav Shroff (sailing) as general secretary and Adille Sumariwalla (athletics) as treasurer. Other important office bearers comprise Ashwini Nachappa (athletics), Saina Nehwal (badminton), Hakimuddin Habibulla (swimming) and MC Mary Kom (boxing), Rathore, Olympic gold medallist Abhinav Bindra, double Olympic
medallist Sushil Kumar, bronze medal winners Yogeshwar Dutt, London bronze medallist Gagan Narang and Beijing Olympic bronze medallist Vijender Singh among others. The OAI proposes to look after the welfare of former and current Olympians through their careers and beyond and is the first and only non-profit organisation by Olympians for Olympians in the country. It is directly affiliated to the World Olympians Association (WOA) under the International Olympic Committee (IOC). IOC member and Athletes Commission chairperson Claudia Bokel along with World Olympians Association treasurer, and IOC Athletes Commission Member Patrick Singleton also came out in full support of the event. The OAI has drawn a roadmap of their plans which will see the development of ath-
letes through various schemes, including education and skill development, health insurance and pension, mentorship of young athletes, legal advice and IOC athletes career programme. It will also create awareness through an outreach programme that will require getting involved with every Indian Olympian and working with each of them. Rathore, who clinched the silver in the men’s Double Trap at Athens in 2004, hailed it as a great initiative before launching the official website. “It is an organisation which is formed by Olympians for the Olympians. The brains behind this great initiative are all very accomplished Olympians and a single platform like this to join all the Olympians around the country is a huge step towards sports in this country,” he said.
Olympic qualification
NEW DELHI, Jul 5 (PTI): WBC Asian champion Neeraj Goyat was the lone Indian left in fray for an Olympic berth after he entered the semifinals even as other two bowed out following first round losses in the International Boxing Association’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament for professional boxers in Vargas, Venezuela. The 24-year-old Neeraj (69kg) defeated Greece’s Dimitrios Poulikos Tsagkrakos 3-0 and will be up against secondseeded German Arajik Marutjan, a former European Championships silver-medallist, in the semifinals on Thursday. Neeraj will be assured of an Olympic berth if he wins the next bout but in case he loses, the Indian will have another chance of qualifying for the Rio Games through the box-off between losing semifinalists.
However, it was curtains for Gaurav Bidhuri (52kg) and Dilbag Singh (81kg). While Dilbag was beaten 1-2 by Moldova’s Petru Ciobanu, Gaurav lost to Ukraine’s Maksym Fatych in the opening round. The competition has 26 Rio Quota Places on offer -- three in every weight category except heavyweight (91kg) and super heavyweight (91+kg), from which only the winners will earn an Olympic spot. The tournament features boxers from AIBA’s own professional events besides pro boxers from all over the world. However, none of the big names in the pro circuit have made themselves available for the event, citing reasons ranging from fitness, lack of time for preparation and the threat of sanctions by their promoters and licensing bodies.
No Germany complex for France: Low Paris, Jul 5 (Agencies): Joachim Low does not agree with suggestions France have a complex about facing Germany ahead of the Euro 2016 semi-finals. The two nations have met four times at major tournaments, Germany triumphing on the last three occasions after France won the first clash 6-3 in 1958. Low faced questions over a hoodoo his team supposedly faced going into their quarterfinal against Italy, a team they had never beaten in eight matches at the World Cup and European Championship. The Germany coach did not give credence to the subject ahead of the penalty shootout win over Antonio Conte’s team in Bordeaux. And he feels counterpart Didier Deschamps’ will be similarly dismissive of claims Les Bleus are intimidated by their poor record against the world champions. “I don’t believe France have a Germany complex, we didn’t have an Italy complex,” said Low. “I don’t put much stock in such talk. What has happened in the past does not count.” France booked their place in the semi-finals with a 5-2 thumping of Iceland in Saint-Denis on Sunday, and Low was impressed by their display.
Putin signs law on 2018 WC visa free for foreign visitors Moscow, Jul 5 (IANS): Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday signed into law a visa free bill for foreigners visiting Russia for matches of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The bill introduces the notion of “fan ID” and stipulates that holders of such an ID will be allowed to enter Russia without visa and stay for the duration of the World Cup, as well as for the period of ten days before and after the championship, Xinhua reported. At the Russian border before entering the country, the person with the fan ID would have to present an identification document, ticket for the match or a document verifying the purchase of a ticket.

“France played an excellent game. The early goal helped them. They will have all kinds of confidence and are playing at home,” he said. “I said right from the start that with their home advantage they are one of the favourites for the title. “We know what we have to do. I am looking forward to the match. It will be very even. I love knockout games like this.” The Germany coach deployed a three-man defence for the clash with Italy, but he is unsure if it will be the right approach against France. “I am not sure [on our defensive line-up], I will have to think about it more,” Low added. “Against Italy a threeman defence was the right
solution. “France are less predictable than Italy because players like [Antoine] Griezmann and [Paul] Pogba are always moving positions.” Mario Gomez has been ruled out of the remainder of the tournament, while the suspended Mats Hummels and injured midfielder Sami Khedira will miss the France match. With Bastian Schweinsteiger also in doubt, Low acknowledged changes will be necessary as Germany try to secure a place in the final. “There will be personnel changes, but I have faith in all of my players, even those who have not had much game time,” said the coach.
Ponting calls for regulation of bat size in Test cricket Sydney, Jul 5 (IANS): Expressing concern over the size and weight of bats used in Test cricket, former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting on Tuesday said he will take up the matter at the next meeting of the Marylebone Cricket Club’s world cricket committee at Lord’s early next week. The World Cup-winning skipper called for regulation of size to ensure a greater balance between bat and ball as the current laws only limit the length and width of bats, not the depth or weight. Ponting said he had no problem with such bats being used in the shorter formats but believed they should be banned from Test cricket. “I think it will happen. I am going in a couple of weeks for a world cricket committee meeting and that will be one of the topics talked about. I don’t mind it for the shorter versions of the game,” Ponting was quoted as saying by espncricinfo. “I would actually say you’ve got a bat you can use in Test cricket and a certain type of bat you can use in one-day cricket and T20 cricket. The short forms of the game survive on boundaries fours and sixes - whereas the Test game is being dominated too much now by batters because the game is a bit easier for them than it was.” Ponting argued that the main issue was the use of lightweight materials with extremely thick edges,
Ricky Ponting like the ones used by Aussie opener David Warner. The Tasmanian, however, has no problems if players use big bats as long as they were also heavy. “I don’t know how they are doing it to make the size of bats they are making now. The modern day bats and weight in particular -- it’s just a completely different game. Full credit to them. If they are there use them, if there’s a better golf club or tennis racquet everyone will use it. It’s nothing against the players.” “ I f yo u a r e s t r o n g enough to use them that’s fine, but you should not get a bat that’s bigger in size than Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s but a whole lot lighter. Chris Gayle’s the same. Everyone talks about Gayle’s bat size, but it’s three and half lbs. He’s big enough and strong enough to use it. I only get worried when they are really big and really light,” the right-hander said.

Havana, Jul 5 (IANS): The Cuban volleyball federation on Monday night confirmed the arrest of six players of the men’s national team in Finland for participating in an alleged rape case. In a statement, the Cuban federation said Osmany Uriarte, Abraham Alfonso, Ricardo Calvo, Rolando Cepeda, Luis Sosa and Dariel Albo were under arrest in the city of Tampere, Xinhua news agency reported. “The preliminary information shows these six players are involved in the acts which are totally rejected by our federation and are far from the discipline and respect that characterize Cuban athletes around the world,” said the statement. Finnish police will urge a regional court on Tuesday order the six men to be remanded in custody to continue the investigation before any possible charges. Initially eight men of the Cuban volleyball squad were detained over the weekend in Tampere after local police on Saturday morning received a report that a woman had been raped at a hotel in the city, 170 km north of the capital Helsinki. Afterwards, local police released two players.

London, Jul 5 (Agencies): New Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho says he will not settle simply for returning the club to the Champions League. The former Chelsea boss says he is ‘a bit frustrated’ not to be in Europe’s top club competition this season but expects United’s absence to last just one campaign. However, speaking to the media at his official unveiling as United boss on Tuesday morning, the Portuguese insisted he is targeting more than just a return to the top four. He said, “I was never very good playing with words or hiding behind words, and
I don’t want to concede goals. I want the fans to be behind us.” “I don’t hide, I chase Sir Alex’s record in Champions League matches. Manchester United is a Champions League club. We have to make sure in July 2017 that this club is where it belongs.” Mourinho takes over a United side who have not challenged for the Premier League title since they triumphed under Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013, with a highest finish of fourth since then. And, having guided Chelsea to the title in 2015, Mourinho was sacked last season after a disastrous start to the campaign. However, the 53-yearold is not apprehensive about the challenge he now faces at United, pointing to his lengthy record of success at Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid. “This challenge obviously doesn’t make me nervous,” he said. “This is not a dream job, this is reality. I am the Man United manager. I think it comes at the right time in my career.” “My history in the last 10 years was always to live with big clubs’ expectations. I know obviously the responsibility and expectation, and at the same time I know the legacy, what is behind me

Venus, Serena through to semis
Venus Williams celebrates after beating Yaroslava Shvedova on Tuesday. (AP/PTI) London, Jul 5 (Agencies): Five-time champion Venus Williams reached the Wimbledon semi-finals for the first time since 2009 with victory over Kazakhstan’s Yaroslava Shvedova. Eighth seed Williams at 36 the oldest Grand Slam semi-finalist for 22 years - beat unseeded Shvedova 7-6 (7-5) 6-3. An all-Williams final remains possible after top seed Serena beat Russian Anasta-
Mini-IPL to be held in UAE or N America MUMBAI, Jul 5 (Agencies): Less than two weeks after announcing their intent to host IPL overseas, the BCCI has initiated talks with broadcasters Star India. The board, it is learnt, has zeroed in on the United Arab Emirates and North America among the potential destinations and is expected to finalise on one “very soon”. The BCCI plans to discuss its strategy for the first time with the franchises, who happen to be its biggest stakeholders in the league. “They’ll be calling for a meeting soon, probably within the next two weeks,” a franchise official said. The IPL Overseas will be slotted in early September, precisely a week after India’s tour of the West Indies gets over. The tournament is a replacement for the T20 Champions League, a tripartite between the Indian cricket board and its Australian and South African counterparts, which was discontinued post the 2014 edition.
sia Pavlyuchenkova 6-4 6-4. In Thursday’s semis, Serena will play Russia’s Elena Vesnina and Venus will take on Germany’s Angelique Kerber. “We don’t really talk too much about it but we are playing doubles later, so we are just happy to be in the semi-finals,” Serena told BBC Sport. Asked about a potential final meeting, she added, “It will be great. Venus is such a
tough opponent I want her to win so bad - not in the final if I am there, but if I’m not, I do.” Kerber, the fourth seed, beat Romanian fifth seed Simona Halep 7-5 7-6 (7-2) in the opening match on Centre Court. Unseeded Russian Vesnina thrashed Slovakian 19th seed Cibulkova 6-2 6-2 in the remaining quarter-final on court one. Venus Williams showed she remains a real threat on the All England Club grass with an impressive win over world number 96 Shvedova. The champion in 2000, 2001, 2005, 2007 and 2008 made it through to her first Grand Slam semi-final since the 2010 US Open. At 36, she is the oldest major semi-finalist since Martina Navratilova finished runner-up at Wimbledon in 1994. The American, who played her first Wimbledon in 1997, recovered from losing an early break to win the opening set tie-break from 5-2 down. She then dominated the second set, racing into a 5-1 lead and holding off signs of a Shvedova comeback to serve out the win. Serena Williams’ presence in the semi-finals is far less of a surprise than that of her sister, but the world number one needed to be at her best to see off Pavlyuchenkova. The American, 34, converted the only two break points of a desperately tight contest, the first with a crush-
ing backhand return in the opening set, the second thanks to a Pavlyuchenkova double fault in the second. Williams, the six-time and defending champion, fired down 11 aces and 29 winners as she closes in on a 22nd Grand Slam singles title. “It was good,” she said. “I am excited to be able to win and get through, it felt really good. I knew Venus was up 5-1 and then I saw [the result] on the court [scoreboard], so I was like ‘Yay’. I am just trying to win my match. I knew I had a tough opponent and one thing I have learnt this year is just to focus on the match.” Vesnina completely dominated against Cibulkova, who appeared to run out of energy after a successful run that began with winning the Eastbourne title ahead of Wimbledon. The Slovakian can at least take comfort that she does not have to postpone her wedding, which can now go ahead as planned on Saturday. Kerber edged past Halep in a contest of terrific rallying, with returns very much dominating over serves. There were eight successive breaks in the first set, and 13 in total, but the Centre Court crowd was thrilled by much of the shot-making. Halep was always coming from behind before ultimately succumbing with a double-fault to hand over the first set, and despite twice recovering breaks in the second, a rash of errors gave Kerber a deserved win in the tie-break.
La Liga in India can help growth of Indian football, says Tebias
Javier Tebas
New Delhi, Jul 5 (Agencies): India’s fandom of La Liga never goes under the radar, and with clubs such as Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid besides players in the ilk of Cristiano Ronaldo, Andres Iniesta and Lionel Messi lighting up pitches in Spain, that looks set to continue into the future. Now, the league’s President Javier Tebas has set his eyes on ensuring the flag of the Spanish top tier is unfurled
across the country. The chief revealed ambitious plans to ensure Indian football improved with continued association with La Liga representatives in India, whilst offering to support grassroots development programs alongside having exhibition matches between not only league clubs but also friendlies between legends of the game to have played in Spain. “India is a very important strategic market for La Liga and we hope to grow in India further and make it the biggest football league in this country. We can also help in the growth of Indian football in general.” revealed Tebias, to The Economic Times. “We will open offices in India by September with people fully employed by La Liga to start working towards the growth of the league in the country,” commented the chief of La Liga, who is a law-
yer by profession. La Liga will follow the likes of the National Basketball Association (NBA), the American Basketball league and the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) to open offices in India. “We will have investment in human capital. We will also get legends like Raul (Raul Gonzalez Blanco), Puyol (Carles Puyol), Luis Figo and more to play match of legends and can also fly teams here to have exhibition matches,” commente the chief on future plans on expanding the footprint of the league. “We want to reach out to the underprivileged young people,” he stated, whilst also adding on the quantifiable impact of the programme, “It is difficult to quantify the investments at this time, but depending on the acceptance and success of these initiatives, we will figure it.”

Bale battles Ronaldo for ticket to Euro final
LYON, Jul 5 (Agencies): Gareth Bale leads Wales into battle against Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal in the Euro 2016 semi-finals on Wednesday hoping to become the first British side to reach a major tournament final in 50 years. Wales have already surpassed all expectations on their first ever appearance at the European Championship finals by reaching the last four with a rousing 3-1 win over the highly-fancied Belgium. However, the spectre of the Real Madrid teammates, the world’s two most expensive players, going head-tohead adds extra spice to an already dazzling encounter in Lyon. “It’s not about two players, everyone knows that, it’s about two nations in a semi-final,” insisted Bale on Tuesday in a bid to defuse the billing of he and Ronaldo’s allstar showdown. “He’s a fantastic player, everyone knows what he can do. We concentrate on what we can do as a team, and not concentrate on individuals.” Despite winning the Champions League twice in three years with Madrid, Bale has tended to be overshadowed by Ronaldo in the Spanish capital, where the Portuguese is a living legend as the top scorer in Real’s history. However, of the two Bale has been in better form in France, scoring in all of Wales’ group games and forcing Northern Ireland’s Gareth McAuley into the own goal with a devilish cross which decided their last 16 tie. By contrast, Ronaldo has
Wales’ Gareth Bale, center, run along with teammates on the pitch during a training session in Dinard, western France on Tuesday. (AP/PTI) look surly, stressed and well off his usually impeccable standards in front of goal. The three-time world player of the year scored twice against Hungary to become the only player to score in four separate European championships. But he failed to find the net against Iceland, Austria, Croatia and Poland. However, Portugal midfielder Andre Gomes defended his captain’s displays. “He has worked a lot for the group and that is the most important thing. He has given his all,” said the Valencia man. “Bale is a reference for Wales just as Cristiano is for
us. Bale knows the Spanish league, but I have also played against British teams before and I know their style. They are strong, aggressive, they attack and counter-attack very well.” “You can’t talk about favourites in a semi-final. If Wales have got this far it is because they have deserved too. We have to have respect.” Portugal have reached the last four despite not winning a game in 90 minutes as they were the only side to progress having drawn all three group games before Ricardo Quaresma’s 117th minute extra-time winner saw off Croatia and penalties were
needed to oust Poland in the quarter-finals. Bale, though, refused to be fooled by Portugal’s route to a fourth semi-final in their last five Euros. “We know what tournament they have had. We have watched all their games on TV. They are a dangerous team. They are ranked very highly and are not in the semifinal for no reason,” added Bale. “Even if they haven’t won, they’ve got the results needed. We will do our homework as normal. Hopefully on the night we can put in another great performance and make more history.”
Mukundan wins eight medals in IWAS World Games MUMBAI, Jul 5 (PTI): Bengaluru para-swimmer Niranjan Mukundan has won eight medals, including three golds, at the recently-concluded IWAS (International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports) U-23 World Games in Prague, Czech Republic.
