MHA to examine rules on movement along border
AIZAWL, JUN 12 (PTI): Centre Monday set up an expert committee to examine the rules which allow free movement of Indian and Myanmarese citizens within 16 kms of the border, but are exploited by militants for smuggling arms, drugs, and fake Indian currency. The decision was taken at a meeting of chief ministers of the northeastern states which share a porous border with Myanmar. Home Minister Rajnath Singh decided to constitute the committee, headed by the special secretary (Internal Security) in the Ministry of Home Affairs, which will examine the rules and regulations adopted by the border states for free movement of the people, an official release said. The committee will give its report for uniform and effective implementation of free movement regime within three months, it said. India’s 1,643-km border with Myanmar touches four states -- Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram. It is unique in many ways as it
has a visa-free movement regime for people living within 16 kms on either side of the border. They can stay up to 72 hours with effective and valid permits issued by the designated authority on either side. This regime has been in place keeping in view the traditional social ties among the border people. “However, it is misused by militants and criminals who smuggle weapons, narcotics, contraband goods and fake Indian currency notes (FICN),” the home minister told reporters. Singh said that with fast improving security situation in this region, militants are denied hideouts and some of them have relocated themselves across the border. “Taking advantage of the free-movement regime, occasionally they enter India, commit crimes and escape to their relatively safer hideouts,” he said. The committee will prepare standard operating procedures common for all the four states so that militants, criminals and contraband are filtered at

According to the committee, the WG had fully acceded on the endorsement and decided to work as a single “entity” on the
peace process. Reiterating that closer ties among other six NNPGs-- NNC/FGN, GPRN/NSCN, NSCN(R), NNC (Parent Body), NNC/ GDRN (N/A), NPGN/ NNC (N/A) was indeed a positive development towards peace, a member of the NTC meditation committee said that WG would work as single entity irrespective of the factions as far as peace process is concerned. It was also decided to hold meetings at regular intervals under WG in order to strengthen the peace process. The members present at the meeting also observed a one-minute silence in respect of late S.S. Khaplang. the border without causing inconvenience to genuine people. NPCC demands CBI probe into Pillai’s case
DIMAPUR, JUN 12 (NPN): Following the IT raids on MKR Pillai’s firms, the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has demanded that the state government hand over the case to CBI to investigate all irregularities that have flourished in the police department. NPCC media cell reminded that the recent IT raids on the business firms of MKR Pillai had once again exposed the corrupt activities of the NPF-led DAN government which have flourished during the past 15 years. NPCC said people like MKR Pillai have been thriving unhindered
KOCHI/DIMAPUR (AGENCIES/STAFF REPORTER): A ccording to estimates of the IT sleuths who conducted the raids on several premises of retired Addl.SP Nagaland Police and Consultant to DGP Nagaland M.K. Rajendran Pillai and his firm M/s Sreevalsam. It was estimated that the total investments in the group could exceed Rs 3,000 crore. Nagaland home department special secretary S.R. Saravanan IPS, who is in charge of the PHQ, has refused to respond to queries about the issue. A truck belonging to Nagaland Police was also found parked in one of Pillai’s residence in Pandalam, Travancore in Kerala. His sons, Arun Raj and Varun Raj, co-operated with the I-T officials and revealed Rs 1,000 crore investments. The search was suspended after they promised to

produce documents on the investments within 10 days. Employed as constable in Mokokchung in 1971, Pillai got out of turn promotion by superseding many till he reached the rank of Addl. SP. When the department sought to promote him to SP, the Police Association strongly objected. In practice, it is unheard of for an NCO to rise beyond the rank of Inspector. As per rule, a government employee retires after 35 years length of service or on attaining 60 years of age. Since Pillai joined service in 1971 he should have retired by 2006(35 years of service). However, he retired after being promoted to the rank of Addl.SP sometime in 2010 and re-employed on contract as Consultant to DGP for the past six years. Earlier, IT sleuths also raided and sealed the rented room of Pillai in Kohima.

Remruata Varte, one of the organizers said that the entire state stands together in opposing the ‘beef ban’ by BJP government at the Centre. Beef is an integral part of the food habits of the people in the region and no one will compromise for the same, Varte said.
