Guj textbook row: NBCC seeks apology DIMAPUR, JUN 12 (NPN): Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) has objected to the reference of Jesus Christ as “haivaan” (demon) in a class IX Hindi textbook published by the Gujarat State School Textbook Board (GSSTB).

In a press statement, the NBCC said that it has also taken serious note of the remark made by the Gujarat officials that referring to Jesus as haivan (demon) was printing error and that it would be corrected. NBCC said the authority has tried to pacify the error as printing mistake, but has hurt the sentiment of the minority Christians in the country.

NBCC stated that it was not enough to verbally state that it was an error because for millions of Christian, Jesus is Lord and Saviour.

NBCC further said calling Jesus as a demon (haivaan) was not only a mistake but an insult.

In this regard, the NBCC has urged the department not only to correct the error but also apologize to the Christian community.

“In such a time as this when religious minority are pinned to the wall, such error is uncalled for,” said NBCC, adding that everyone must learn to be sensitive and stop hurting the sentiments of each other.

NBCC said as assured by the Gujarat education minister, Bhupendrasinh Chudasama, the er ror should not only be corrected but due apology must also be tendered to the Christian community.

Gov demands action

Governor of Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh, PB Acharya, has expressed shock and dismay over the news report of the Gujarat board Class IX Hindi language textbook describing Lord Jesus Christ as ‘Haivaan’.

According to Raj Bhavan, the governor, in a letter addressed to Gujarat Governor, Om Prakash Kohli, said such mendacious action by irresponsible employees not only hurt the sentiments but also jeopardise communal harmony.

Acharya has called for stern action against the person responsible and should be punished as per law.

Further, Acharya reportedly spoke to his counterpart in Gujarat about the seriousness of the matter.

Kohli assured to take up the matter urgently with the Gujarat State Education Minister and to take action against the person concerned. The Governor of Gujarat also expressed his regret, PRO said.

MHA to examine rules on movement along border

AIZAWL, JUN 12 (PTI): Centre Monday set up an expert committee to examine the rules which allow free movement of Indian and Myanmarese citizens within 16 kms of the border, but are exploited by militants for smuggling arms, drugs, and fake Indian currency.

The decision was taken at a meeting of chief ministers of the northeastern states which share a porous border with Myanmar.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh decided to constitute the committee, headed by the special secretary (Internal Security) in the Ministry of Home Affairs, which will examine the rules and regulations adopted by the border states for free movement of the people, an official release said.

The committee will give its report for uniform and effective implementation of free movement regime within three months, it said. India’s 1,643-km border with Myanmar touches four states -- Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram. It is unique in many ways as it

has a visa-free movement regime for people living within 16 kms on either side of the border. They can stay up to 72 hours with effective and valid permits issued by the designated authority on either side. This regime has been in place keeping in view the traditional social ties among the border people.

“However, it is misused by militants and criminals who smuggle weapons, narcotics, contraband goods and fake Indian currency notes (FICN),” the home minister told reporters.

Singh said that with fast improving security situation in this region, militants are denied hideouts and some of them have relocated themselves across the border. “Taking advantage of the free-movement regime, occasionally they enter India, commit crimes and escape to their relatively safer hideouts,” he said.

DIMAPUR, JUN 12 (NPN): Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC) on Monday reiterated its endorsement that the Working Group (WG) of the Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs) should represent all the six groups for political negotiation, if invited by the Government of India. The decision was taken at a closed door joint meeting held between the WG of NNPGs and NTC at the Tourist Lodge, Dimapur convened by NTC mediation committee. “From today onwards, they have decided to collectively work under the WG,” a member of the NTC mediation committee told Nagaland Post.

According to the committee, the WG had fully acceded on the endorsement and decided to work as a single “entity” on the

peace process. Reiterating that closer ties among other six NNPGs-- NNC/FGN, GPRN/NSCN, NSCN(R), NNC (Parent Body), NNC/ GDRN (N/A), NPGN/ NNC (N/A) was indeed a positive development towards peace, a member of the NTC meditation committee said that WG would work as single entity irrespective of the factions as far as peace process is concerned.

It was also decided to hold meetings at regular intervals under WG in order to strengthen the peace process. The members present at the meeting also observed a one-minute silence in respect of late S.S. Khaplang.

State govt bans circulation of docs, files on social media

DIMAPUR, JUN 12 (NPN): Taking serious note of office memorandums/ documents being leaked on social media, the P&AR department has cautioned those officials of action.

Circulation of important documents/file notings, were being circulated through “electronic media” even before approval by competent authority, has come to the notice of the government, hampering decision making, it said.

According to an official bulletin, the department of P&AR, in a circular, has therefore impressed upon all the government officials that disclosure of important government documents without approval from competent authority would invite initiation of disciplinary proceedings for violation of Rule 21 of Nagaland Government Servants Conduct Rules 1968.

NPCC demands CBI probe into Pillai’s case

ACAUT told the IT department that it had also discovered that the accused had been running his enterprise under the cover of two firms-- M/S Lotha Trading Agency and M/S RZ Lotha, both in the name of R. Zumomo Lotha, who is exempted from the Income Tax, violating relevant sections of the IT Act. ACAUT said another FIR was registered against M/S Lotha Trading Agency and M/S RZ Lotha.

Alleging that Tinku was a murder accused on PDS related issue, ACAUT said the ADC (Judicial) has also issued a warrant of arrest on February 19, 2008. However, no arrest was made till date.

NSCN (I-M): NSCN (I-M) vicechairman Gen (redt) Kholi Konyak has expressed shock on the sudden demise of SS Khaplang on June 9. In a condolence note, Kholi said, three days before Khaplang’s demise, he saw him in his dream “waving your hand at me”. “I thought with heavy heart that I would die soon. But, it turned out the other way”, Kholi said. NSCN (I-M) vice-chairman acknowledged the Khaplang’s contribution to the Nagas and said that inspite of human weakness and errors, “we all stood firm at all costs for the cause of the Naga Nationhood”. Kholi also recollected when his comrade told him when he last visited in 2004, “that we should not let leaders of our one Naga Civil Society Organizations, bureaucrats, politicians, intellectuals to dictate and interfere in our long political struggle because those are the same people who had betrayed our leader lie A.Z. Phizo, instead, they should just have faith in their leaders who are genuinely struggling for Naga’s common cause”.

Kholi also said that while honouring Khaplang’s decision to struggle with arms for all Nagas again, he has also decided to take up arms for the people but without bloodshed and through peaceful means. Therefore, Kholi said he had joined NSCN leadership led by late Isak Chishi Swu and Th. Muivah.

Further, the NSCN (I-M) leader vowed that he along with ato kilonser Th. Muivah would not allow the Nagas to be divided.

MNF: Mizo National Front (MNF) has expressed sadness at the demise of late SS Khaplang. In a condolence message, MNF president Zoramthanga hoped that under the guidance of the new leadership, the people will have a better chance and will surely have peace and settlement with the grace and guidance of God. MNF further conveyed condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for the departed soul to rest in peace.

ANSF & ANC: Arunachal Naga Students’ Federation (ANSF) and Arunachal Naga Communities (ANC) have mourned at the demise of late SS Khaplang, who passed away on June 9. In a condolence message, ANSF &ANC has termed late Khaplang as a long standing Naga nationalist who made tremendous positive and crucial contribution to the founding and development of the Naga freedom struggle.

ENSUB: Eastern Nagaland Students’ union Bangalore (ENSUB) has also condoled the passing away of late SS Khaplang chairman of NSCN (K) on June 9, at Taka Myanmar. In a condolence message, the union said SS Khaplang was a long-standing Naga Nationalist who made tremendous and crucial contributions to the founding and development of the Naga freedom struggle and was an exceptional person, driven with passion and determination for freedom of Naga people.

AYO: Angami Youth Organisation (AYO) while expressing sadness on the demise of late S S Khaplang, said that late Khaplang was a charismatic leader who had not only gathered momentum of nationalist feeling upon the Nagas but had influenced everyone. AYO condolences to the bereaved family and prayed that the soul to rest in peace.

NSO: Naga Students’ Organisation (Myanmar) (NSO) described late Khaplang as a man of principle who was vehemently devoted to the cause of Naga sovereignty, and “a true patriot” who gave his life unwaveringly for what he believed in. Further, NSO conveyed condolences to the bereaved family members and all the rank and file of NSCN-K and prayed for the departed soul to rest in peace.

ENSUK: Eastern Nagaland Students’ Union Kohima (ENSUK) has condoled the demise of “Patriotic Leader SS Khaplang, Chairman NSCN (K)” who has dedicated his whole life for the cause of the Nagas.

ENSUK speaker Heno Lushing in a press statement said that his dedication will be remembered and his legacy will continue for generations to come.

Kuki Tribal Union clarifies on abduction, killing DIMAPUR: NSCN/GPRN Kuki Tribal Union (KTU) has issued clarification that late Khailun Haokip a member of the Steering Committee, NSCN/GPRN, of Kuki Region, who was abducted from T. Natjang village, Kasom block Ukhrul district Manipur on May 29 and “brutally tortured to death at Bongbal Kholen Village Saikul sub-division was not KTU C-in-C”.

ity secretary, Edward Kuki in a statement said that late Khailun was a Steering Committee member of NSCN/GPRN Kuki Region (KTU) and assigned as KTU Ukhrul unit in-charge. He was on duty to T. Natjang and Mollen village, when he along with Khuphung Keishing a Tatar of GPRN were “abducted by KNF (James faction)”.

However, Khuphung was released immediately while the later was detained,

the statement said.

Therefore, KTU said that blaming and condemning Khuphung was “rootless which is totally null and void”.

Further, while the deceased in their custody, the KNF (N) through the “publicity information secretary Gogou Vaiphei, sought the

directives of the Kuki Inpi Manipur to decide the fate of late. Mr. Khailun Haokip, as to whether he be kept alive or put to death”.

Therefore, KTU said that Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM) was responsible for “brutal killing and cold blooded assassination of late. Khailun Haokip”.

She also asserted that the department was contemplating to approach the Nagaland State Legal Services Authority to organise legal training for the department officers, to strengthen enforcement of the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Amendment Act, 2016.

Speaking on prohibition and regulation amendment act 2016, member secretary NSLSA Nino Iralu said that child labour was regarded as a serious issue in terms of economic welfare as children were

deprived of education and the opportunity to develop physically, intellectually, emotionally and psychologically.

She said that child labour has long term adverse effect as the practise of engaging children in economic activity on part time or full time deprive them of their childhood and was harmful to their physical and mental development.

ADC Kohima, T.L Kiusumong Tikhir in his brief address said June 12 was a day of reminder to fight against Child labour and lamented that many child were deprived of better life.

He said that all stakeholders must come together by accepting that child labour existed in the state.

He also suggested that church should be involved

as partners to fight against child labour stating that poverty triggers child labour. He further urged the students to be an ambassador for this movement as every child deserves respect and healthy childhood.

Correspondent/Staff Reporter KOHIMA/DIMAPUR, JUNE 12 (NPN): Along with the rest of the world, World Day against Child Labour was obser ved across the state, where various events were organised to mark the day.

Commissioner and secretary labour and employment, skill development and entrepreneurship Anenla T. Sato has expressed concern on the increase in child labour in the state and said that this need to be addressed at the earliest by all stakeholders.

She said this on the occasion of World Day against Child Labour held under the theme “In Conflict and Disasters, Protect Children from Child Labour” at APO Hall,

Monday.

She said that deploying more children as domestic helper in Kohima was a gross violation of child rights and attributed that poverty and ignorance of the parents, poor education system, weak protection laws and weak border monitoring was the major cause of this problem.

Therefore, she called upon the department to be committed in its endeavour and become an agent to fight against the ill effects of child labour and to fight for the Rights of the Child as it had pledged in 2008.

She also said that the department had organized massive awareness campaigns both at government and NGO levels.

Further, the commissioner and secretary said that more than 5,000 college and school students

lauded Childline, Dimapur for the good job and urged the members to reach out to the rest of Nagaland.

She pointed out that child labour in Dimapur and Kohima has been rapidly increasing due to poverty, lack of education, and lack of proper school in rural areas. In this regard, she called upon the responsible department, Childline Nagaland and NGOs to reach out to schools and made the parents aware of the situation.

She lamented on the absentees of teachers, lack of educational facilities in most of the government schools in the state especially in the rural areas, which she said was injustice towards children.

“Every child has right to go to school and to get quality education” she remarked.

Also, while delivering

introductory note, director CECS/nodal director Childline, Subonenba Longkumer said that Childline Nagaland during the last six years has registered more than 900 cases which are directly or indirectly related to child labour.

Several efforts have been undertaken by organizations and stakeholders to eliminate the practices of child labour, however, he said that problem cannot be dealt in just a day or month.

To eradicate child labour and child abuse, government schemes or any other regulations was not needed but everyone have should take a decision “not to employee children”, Subonenba said.

Earlier, programme was chaired by nodal coordinator Childline, Neiketulie Namdau, while students of CECS, Nagarjan and children of NCLP presented special songs.

Short speech was also delivered by assistant labour commissioner Dimapur, W.Temwang Konyak. On the occasion, ADC Dimapur also released video clip on child labour.

Exhorting the gathering, Richard from Zynorique initiative society disclosed that Kiphire is the fourth district that the team has been covering and that for a construction of one building more than Rs. 20-30 lakhs has been spent in Kohima and Dimapur added that it was not a business but a skill.

ADC Wokha K. Thavaseelan along with officials of NSDMA and trainees. (NP) Correspondent WOKHA, JUN 12 (NPN): Five-day training of trainers on Community First Responders (CFRs) got underway Monday with a short induction programme here at Town Hall, Wokha.

ADC Wokha K. Thavaseelan, in his opening remarks thanked the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) for coming up with the training programmes, which he said was good for the community.

He said that the whole idea behind conceptualization of CFRs was that when disasters strike, the first responders are usually from the community members.

ADC further told the

trainees that what they learn and do would eventually end up saving lots of lives.

District Disaster Management Officer and State Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Jonji Odyuo, in his brief introduction, urged the trainees to take the training seriously as it was designed to upgrade their skills for saving lives during times of disasters. Odyuo also said that the training programmes has been designed in such a way that theory part has been minimized and practical aspects maximized so that the trainees get more hands-on experience.

He further informed that the first day would be dedicated to theory and basic concepts of CFRs,

second day on search and rescue techniques, third day on first aid, fourth day on tests, both oral and written, and the fifth day on interactions and presentations by the CFR teams. A valedictory programme will be held on the fifth day where trainees would be presented certificates.

DIMAPUR: Recognizing the need to sensitize on the issues of child labour, District Legal Services Authorities (DLSAs) conducted legal awareness programme and organized painting competition on World Day Against Child Labour under the theme “In conflicts and disasters, protect children from child labour” on June 12 in various districts.

by Longleng District Legal Services Authority (LDLSA) at the auditorium of Government High School Longleng, Tucuno Vamuzo, secretary Longleng District Legal Services Authority appraised on the constitutional provisions on child labour such as Article 21 A- Right to Education, Article 24- Prohibition of employment of children in factories etc. and Article 39 (e).

The secretary further informed on NALSA (Child Friendly Services to children and their protection) scheme 2015, which aim to improve access to justice for children and to facilitate proper implementation of the existing legislations and policies in favour of children and to ensure effective legal assistance to children who come in conflict with the law or require care and protection.

The notification, it said, “travels way beyond the scope and object as set out in the Preamble of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960”, thus infringing the rights of the states to regulate the items enlisted in the State List (List-II of VII Schedule to the Constitution of India).

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change had issued the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Regulation of Livestock Markets) Rules, 2017 on May 23.

Sangma, introducing the resolution, alleged that the notification was “designed to affect” the people of the north-east in general and Meghalaya in particular.

It suffered from “serious shortcomings and infirmities” and could have an “adverse impact on the economy and culture” of the state of Meghalaya, he added.

The chief minister said beef was an “integral part” of the dietary habit of the tribals of Meghalaya and its demand in the state in 2015-2016 was 23,634 metric tonnes. Beef production in the state was only 12,834 MT and 10,800 MT was purchased from outside, he added.

Sangma told the House that to balance the demand and supply of beef, the government had put in place the Meghalaya State Livestock Mission for 2017-2022 to augment the livestock production.

The prohibition on the sale and purchase of cattle at animal markets for the purpose of slaughter would affect the livelihood of over 5.7 lakh (79%) households, which were currently involved in cattle-rearing, he added.

“It will also affect the right of the people to have food of their own choice and celebrate the religious, cultural and social ceremonies in practice since time immemorial,” said Sangma.

There are different views on the issue as many experts feel the cost of saving electricity wouldn’t be much and it could lead to chaos in a densely populated country like India.

The climate in the hilly terrain of Manipur, said Devakanta, is inconsistent.

And each region has a seed that suits its climate. “But many traditional seeds have been lost. It made my search difficult,” said Devakanta.

“But there was hope.

I found some rare varieties from farmers during one of my initial travels. I didn’t

look back after that,” he said. The more Devakanta travelled, the more he collected paddy seeds. “But collecting seeds was one side of the coin. I had to check the yields in my field.

It was after cultivating the seeds I got to know that many were good compared to those available today,” said Devakanta, who is also president of All Manipur Trained Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Promoters Consortium.

Devakanta’s paddy field at his village Postangbam in Imphal has been a place of experiments.

Manipur is famous for its black rice which is fibre-rich and has medicinal value, and Devakanta has researched extensively on it.

“I have done a lot of experiments on black rice. More than 20 varieties of black rice are popular in Manipur today,” said Devakanta adding that he cooperates with farmers in other areas.

“I share my seed collection with farmers in other parts of India. Many have tested the yield of these traditional varieties at other places. The results have been positive,” Devakanta said.

Bandh affects normal life in western Assam

Guwahati, Jun 12 (Agencies): Life was affected in most parts of western Assam as a 36-hour bandh called

by All Koch-Rajbonshi Students Union (AKRSU) began today. Vehicular as well as railway traffic was disrupted as picketers blocked roads and railway tracks at several parts in Koch-Rajbonshi dominated western Assam areas.

A couple of passenger trains were held up at different stations due to the blockade but resumed onward journey later after the tracks were cleared. Picketers burnt tyres on the roads, disrupting vehicular traffic for some time.

Business establishments and educational institutions remained closed in most parts of western Assam. The bandh has been called by the AKRSU demanding Scheduled Tribe status for the community and a separate ‘Kamatapur’ state.

Shillong, Jun 12: The Meghalaya Assembly in a special assembly on Monday unanimously approved the State Goods and Services Tax (GST) Bill, 2017 ahead of the country-wide rollout of the new tax regime from July 1.

Taxation Minister Zenith M. Sangma moved the bill which was unanimously adopted after members of the assembly discussed on the benefits and ramification of the on the implementation of the GST regime.

The opposition parties - United Democratic Party, Hill State People’s Democratic Party and National People’s Party – did not oppose the bill, but raised questions on the state government preparedness to implement new tax regime

Last year, the assembly ratified the Constitution (122nd Amendment) Bill, 2014, officially known as the Constitution (101st Amendment) Act, 2016, related to the GST. “Destination-based consuming states like Meghalaya will benefit from the GST implementation while certain manufacturing states will lose out marginally on revenue generation,” Sangma informed the assembly.

Under the new tax regime, he said staple foods like wheat and rice have been kept out of its ambit of the GST which would help the common man.

He said the GST will remove the inherent weaknesses present in the current indirect taxation system and will remove the cascading effect on prices of goods and services due to the tax on tax.

Three IEDs detected in Manipur

IMPHAL, Jun 12: A major tragedy was Monday averted by Manipur police when three powerful IEDs planted by suspected militants were detected before it was triggered in Imphal’s Mantripukhri area.

The three IEDs in polythene bag was found planted at the main entrance gate of Manipur Diesel, a motor dealer at Mantripukhri under Heingang police station of Imphal East district today morning. Police said that staff of the motor dealer

informed them about an unattended polythene bag at the main entrance gate of their office. As there were earlier instances of planting bombs targeting the motor agency, a team of police along with experts of Police bomb squad came to the site, cordoned off the area and the three IEDs were safely retrieved and detonated at a safe place. Police suspect the IEDs were planted by a militant group in connection with monetary demand from the dealer. The proprietor of the dealer was not available for comment.

Justice Karnan retires before his jail term New Delhi/Kolkata, Jun 12 (IANS): Calcutta High Court judge Justice C.S. Karnan, who is facing six months imprisonment for contempt of the Supreme Court, retired on Monday, probably escaping the odium of a sitting judge being arrested while in office.

Justice Karnan, who was transferred to Kolkata after he had kicked up a row by raking up issues against other judges of the Madras High Court, including the Chief Justice, has been untraceable ever since the apex court sentenced him for contempt on May 9. A seven-judge bench headed

by Chief Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar held Karnan guilty of contempt and ordered six months imprisonment for him.

A team of West Bengal police had rushed to Chennai and other places in Tamil Nadu looking for him but without success.

Probably the police may lay its hands on the controversial judge now that he has retired.

Reacting to the situation, senior counsel and former president of the Supreme Court Bar Association Dushyant Dave told IANS that “it reflects failure on the part of the police in not having found him. .. It shows complete lack of respect of the Supreme Court by the Executive.”

“Right or wrong the Supreme Court judgment has to be implemented and the state is fully responsible for the lapses and must be held accountable,” Dave said, pointing out that “The whole saga reflects the sorry state of affairs in the judiciary.”

However, well-known

C.S. Karnan lawyer Kamini Jaiswal says that Justice Karnan may have escaped arrest so far but now he will be arrested.

Unlike what happens in the case of the common man, in the case of Justice Karnan they have to follow procedures and take the help of Tamil Nadu police in arresting him, Jaiswal said.

“They (West Bengal police) have to follow procedure” and can’t be seen to be “high handed” as Justice Karnan knows the law and there are lawyers around him.

Justice Karnan had left Kolkata on May 9 itself and remained elusive thereafter even though Director General of West Bengal Police constituted teams of police personnel which went to Chennai and other places looking for him.

He moved the top court for the suspension of his sentence and sought review of the May 9 order but he did not get any relief.

His plea for review was declined on technical grounds without its coming before the seven judges bench.

Justice Karnan’s counsel Mathews J. Nedumpara had repeatedly told the top court that the detailed order holding him guilty of contempt was never made available to him after May 9

- something he was entitled to like any other litigant.

The failure of West Bengal police to arrest Justice Karnan in the last one a half months has saved a situation of a serving judge of a High Court being arrested and sent to jail.

Now, if Justice Karnan is arrested in pursuance of the top court order then it would be an arrest of a former judge of a High court - who post retirement is like any other ordinary citizen.

It is not only that Justice Karnan has retired on Monday - without being given a formal farewell by the Calcutta High Court - but any relook into his case has to go through a fresh process as one of the seven judges, Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose, has since retired.

Besides Chief Justice Khehar, other judges on the bench were Justice Dipak Misra, Justice J. Chelameswar, Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Justice Madan B. Lokur, Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose and Justice Kurian Joseph.

Justice Ghose retired from the Supreme Court on May 27 and any hearing of Justice Karnan’s case has to be by a seven judges bench and the same has to be reconstituted to have another judge in place of Justice Ghose.

Even if other six judges Chief Justice Khehar, Justice Dipak Misra, Justice J. Chelameswar, Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Justice Madan B. Lokur, and Justice Kurian Joseph continue to remain on the bench, change of one judge as per the top court practice, would necessitate fresh hearing of the matter.

Geelani wants political activists freed before Eid

S r i nag a r , J u n 1 2 (IANS): Hardline separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani on Monday demanded the release of political activists in prisons in the Kashmir Valley before Eid-ul-Fitr.

The octogenarian said in a statement that Eid would fall on June 25 or 26, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

Geelani said the detention of political activists under the harsh Public Safety Act (PSA) in Jammu and Kashmir was nothing short of “extremism”.

Tea production in Bengal hit due to strike Ko l k at a , J u n 1 2 (IANS): Tea production in North Bengal was affected on Monday as majority of the tea gardens remained shut on the first day of the strike called by the joint forum of trade unions, industry players said on Monday.

The joint forum of 24 trade unions of the tea industry in North Bengal had called for a two-day industrial strike, demanding minimum wages among other things. Experts said the Darjeeling tea industry itself is expected to face a loss of more than Rs 10 crore in the two-day strike.

The impact of the strike is mostly sporadic but no work was done in majority of gardens while partial work was reported in some of the gardens,” Indian Tea Association’s Secretary General Arijit Raha said.

There are about 300 tea gardens in North Bengal, out of which 87 are in Darjeeling, he said.

Last year, Darjeeling produced around 8.5 million kg of tea. “One day of strike results in a one per cent drop in production. This production loss cannot be

compensated in the rest of the year,” Darjeeling Tea Association’s (DTA) Principal Advisor Sandip Mukherjee told IANS. There are about 57,000 workers in the Darjeeling tea gardens. “No work was reported in Darjeeling on Monday,” Mukherjee said.

DTA’s former Chairman S.S. Bagaria said: “The losses due to the strike will not only hit the tea garden owners but also workers,” said The state General Secretary of Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) Anandi Sahu said more than 90-95 per cent of the four lakh tea workers in North

Bengal supported the strike.

“The response has been overwhelming. As many as 95 per cent tea workers in the hills joined the strike.

For example, only 18 workers entered the garden out of 1,800 in the Sukna tea garden,” he told IANS. The forum also called for a 12-hour general strike on Tuesday in the tea garden-

based areas of West Bengal like Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Islampur and Mekhliganj.

The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha -- which has called for an indefinite shutdown in Darjeeling and Kalimpong from Monday, demanding a separate Gorkhaland -- also supported the tea workers’ strike.

nother veteran Naga nationalist leader Shangwang Shangyung Khaplang Khaplang joins several other former comrade-in-arms who have passed away while on their journey for their goal of Naga independence. There were several prominent legendary leaders beginning from Z.A.Phizo, Khodao Yanthan, Isak Chishi Swu to name some. Khaplang got actively involved in Naga nationalism when, In 1964, he formed the Naga Defence Force that conceived a separate nation carved out of India and Myanmar. He then joined hands with A.Z.Phizo and Burma, now Myanmar became the hideout of the Naga Army.

S.S.Khaplang with former comrades Isak Chishi Swu and Th.Muivah became the driving force for the Naga armed movement after 1975 when the signing of the Shillong Accord created the split. Khaplang along with Isak Chishi Swu and Th.Muivah formed the NSCN in 1980 after the Shillong Accord was signed in 1975 by representatives of the NNC. The split in the NSCN in 1988 was bloody when scores lost their lives. The split resulted in formation of two groups- NSCN(Isak-Muivah) and NSCN(Khaplang).

By virtue of being a Hemi Naga and having sway over Nagas in Mynamar, Khaplang has been the host for several north east militant groups who have their bases away from the reach of the Indian security forces. The split in the NSCN spelt the beginning of subsequent weakening of the armed wing. Today there are four NSCN factions as well as several of the erstwhile undivided NNC. After the NSCN(I-M) signed the cease fire with the government of India in 1997, the NSCN(K) remained outside of it. In pursuance of peaceful solution, the government of India also signed a cease fire agreement with the NSCN(K) in 2001 but formal negotiations hadn’t started. The issue of negotiations between NSCN(K) and the government of India faced a road block over the issue of Khaplang and the Nagas in Myanmar. However, Khaplang had taken a practical view of the issue. He knew that there could be no solution that included Nagas of Myhanmar and so mended fences with the Myanmarese junta and obtained a semi-autonomous patch of territory in the Taga region, near the India-Myanmar border.

The ceasefire arrangement with the current government in Myanmar remains informal although there are two Naga MPs in the national parliament. The passing away of Khaplang may eventually lead to new perceptions within the next rung of leadership.

It is purely speculative to suggest that if a Naga from Nagaland becomes the next chairman then it will result in much improved chances of re-signing of cease fire and eventual solution. It would not be advisable to be a self-styled specialist in such matters. The concept of outsiders giving expert opinions and hoping that these will influence the outcome needs to be dismissed. The reason why the issue remains as it is today is because of disunity within the ranks. A clearer picture may take time to emerge but Khaplang’s death casts a cloud over the future of the self-designated United Liberation Front of Western South East Asia and the Songbijit group of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland. However, what is important is what the government of India plans to do in order to have all these groups on the negotiating table.

Some of us have our new name written only in certain spots, like spiritual measles. And in those areas of our lives we look all right. When we are in our best spiritual mood, you would think we were the highest quality saints. But don’t dare look at us when we are not in that mood. A true disciple is one who has his new name written all over him— self-interest, pride, and selfsufficiency have been completely erased.

Pride is the sin of making “self” our god. And some of us today do this, not like the Pharisee, but like the tax collector (see Luke 18:9-14). For you to say, “Oh, I’m no saint,” is acceptable by human standards of pride, but it is unconscious blasphemy against God. You defy God to make you a saint, as if to say, “I am too weak and hopeless and outside the reach of the atonement by the Cross of Christ.” Why aren’t you a saint? It is either that you do not want to be a saint, or that you do not believe that God can make you into one. You say it would be all right if God saved you and took you straight to heaven. That is exactly what He will do! And not only do we make our home with Him, but Jesus said of His Father and Himself, “…We will come to him and make Our home with him” (John 14:23).

Put no conditions on your life— let Jesus be everything to you, and He will take you home with Him not only for a day, but for eternity.

ltruism is the conscious and deliberate giving of something you may need yourself but are prepared to donate for another’s wellbeing. Very few humans are altruistic.

I see people who give their old clothes to their own servants, or less fortunate relatives, and they think they are being very generous. People who celebrate their birthdays by calling a few poor children to share their goodies – that is not altruism. Nor is giving things to your children that once belonged to you – that is genetic self interest.

Altruism exists only when the donor expects nothing from the recipient and is not related. Animals do it much more gracefully than humans.

Vampire bats drink the blood of mammals, usually cattle, horses, deer. These small creatures, less than 4 inches long and 40 gms in weight, live in the jungles of South America. They hunt at night and are adept at crawling on a body till they find a suitable blood vessel which they puncture softly and lap up the trickling blood.

Upto 2,000 animals live in the same roosting area. If a vampire bat does not find a mammal it goes without a meal for one night. But it takes three days for a bat to starve to death and a weakened creature cannot even fly to find a host. And so, every now and then, a

bat that has failed to find blood will beg a meal from a stranger in the roost. The donor will, without question, regurgitate blood and share the meal.

A well documented case is that of a group of sperm whales off the coast of Lisbon, Portugal, who took a handicapped adult bottlenose dolphin into their group. The dolphin travelled, foraged, and played with the adult whales and their calves. When it rubbed its body against the whales, they would sometimes even return the gesture. There was no benefit to the whales of forming this bond with the handicapped dolphin.

Dolphins are known for their compassion. In 2008, one bottlenose dolphin came to the rescue of two beached whales in New Zealand and led them into safe waters. Without the dolphin’s guidance, the whales would have died.

In another incident in New Zealand, a group of human swimmers were surprised when dolphins began circling around them, splashing in the water. The swimmers initially thought the dolphins were displaying aggressive behaviour, but it turned out that they were warding off sharks.

Classic examples of altruists are ravens. If one, or a few, come across food, they make loud calls to attract even more ravens.

Very few humans are altruistic ulates that a food bonanza should be defended, not shared. But these birds do share — to the point that some of the ravens even returned to their roost to bring in more birds.

Social insects live together and allow an individual to flourish by helping every other insect in the community. But that is not pure altruism. I would count it business as usual, or programming for survival.

Bees protecting a swarm by stinging and, in the process, dying horribly as the stinger pulls out the entire abdomen, or certain species of termites releasing a sticky secretion by rupturing their own glands to protect the nest against invaders, is also programmed behaviour. In ants, wasps, bees and termites, sterile workers devote their whole lives to caring for the queen, constructing and protecting the nest, foraging for food, and tending the larvae. That’s not altruism.

That’s just doing their jobs.

For instance, meerkats have one standing guard to warn the community

while the rest feed in case of predator attack. Into that category I would even put examples of extreme sacrifice. For instance, the mother spider Stegodyphus, who allows her infants to eat her, or a male spider allowing a female fertilized by him to eat him.

I would not even put trading in kindnesses as altruism. For instance, a monkey will get its insects pulled out by a member of the pack and then, in return will do the same. Or a female wolf that offers to stay behind with the cubs while the rest of the pack goes hunting. Altruism would be those single wolves who bring back meat for those too sick or nursing to go on the hunt.

Altruism is the following: Mongooses and bonobos who support sick, handicapped or elderly animals. Chimpanzees who help other chimpanzees and even humans without expecting anything in return. Dolphins who support sick or injured animals, swimming under them for

hours and pushing them to the surface so they can breathe.

Walruses adopt orphans. African Buffalo often turn around in their flight from predators in order to rescue a member of the herd who has been surrounded. Male and female lemurs take care of infants unrelated to them. Vervet monkeys send out alarms to warn other moneys of predators, even if it means putting themselves in danger, by attracting attention.

In many bird species, the parents receive help from unrelated “helper” birds in feeding their babies. Harpagifer bispinis fish live in the Antarctic peninsula.

If the parent guarding the nest of eggs is removed, an unrelated male will guard the nest from predators and prevent fungal growth that would kill off the brood.

A unique example of altruism is found in the Dictyostelium mucoroides slime mould. These live as individuals until food is so short that they start starving. Then they get together and form a body in which some cells sacrifice themselves to promote the survival of other cells.

Elephants go out of their way to assist others in need. Like saving a calf from drowning and spraying water on an injured member of the herd to keep it cool.

A study in the journal Marine Mammal Science

described the altruism of humpback whales, giving examples of how the giant creatures help seals and other creatures being attacked by killer whales.

The researchers concluded that while it made sense for humpbacks to defend their own calves, they had nothing to gain by meddling in attacks on other species.

Interspecific altruism,” the scientists wrote, “could not be ruled out.”

Have you seen the You Tube video of a rhesus macaque successfully resuscitating another of its species which had been electrocuted at a train station? The persistence and concern was amazing and entirely selfless.

Rats are the most altruistic of species. They go out of their way to help others in distress. They will share food with strangers, They will refuse in scientific experiments to inflict pain on each other even if it means dying themselves.

When given the choice of escaping or staying to help a strange rat in distress, they almost always choose the latter. Their decisions are always kind. How sad that we use these creatures to experiment on, killing over a billion a year.

All societies, whether human or bat, depend on deliberate and reciprocal kindnesses. Violence spreads and nations shatter when we forget that.

Naga Society

ew terms regularly crop up for use all over the world, so is the term Naga society. Outsiders think that Naga civilization is born yesterday which is not true. In the Empire, many records were made somewhat useful and somewhat not. For example John Company Writer (Clerk) Verrier Ellwyn opted for social anthropology and was put on board of Anthropological Survey of India. He did his utmost to focus on NE tribes and quoting other British sources attempted a link with Sumatra, Borneo etc of Indian Ocean and Naga origin. Another is the second hand reference by Naga elites of the word NAKA (Myanmar term for those who pierce their ears). Naga never came from NANGA (or Naked) as quoted by self styled anthropologists instead it was and is NOGA (Nog means hill and Noga hill people) even today one can hear an Assamese talk about Noga and not Naga. People from Hindi belt (mixture of Bhojpuri, Khariboli and all is new though) tend to put an accent e.g SAUCE is SAAS(mother in law), launch is lunch and so on. This slant was noted when late Chandra Sekhar PM addressed UN General Assembly in his powerful Bhojpuri accented English. Noga became NAGA to others. Their civilization and culture were unknown to rank outsiders. A semi tribal Assam knew them and instead of Pandit Nehru, CM BP Chaliha was more suitable to deal with Nagas using Nagamese which he knew. A familiarity was necessary else the matter was officially vague at Lutyen’s square. A pocket in the hills and rain forests not visited by any religion or faith was inhabited by clusters of people who grew up in isolation. Yet credit goes to them because they practised real equality. British defined Hindoo as “snake charmer and rope tricker” (World Religions Meet Chicago 1893 where Swami Vivekanand reached uninvited).

Naga animists were called Hindoo.

PM Vajpayee praised “Unique History” that pleased Nagas no end. It is true and it is so in secluded areas like Masai warrior in the Dark Continent of Africa and the near extinct Jarwa tribe of Andamans. Logistics make them so. The 12 Rajas of Bengal (Baro Bhuiyan) and Saraighat (Lachit BorPhukan) deserve mention. Nagas were deliberately left at the mercy of New Delhi but the second channel used remote control. Crown Colony, Pawsey,Amnesty, Rev Scott etc. surfaced repeatedly.

Phizo disliked the imperialists but they hosted him till end.

The Naga issue turned violent. I read Rev Sakhrie’s wife mourning only son’s death.

“Revenge is Mine” gives me a lot of consolation which I learnt from Nagas (M.Zinyu’s book).

However the unequal war was predictably lost. India’s million strong standing infantry was not taken into account. Nagas were tremendous fighters. Mowu’s name would be remembered by many. He tirelessly worked for long and gave up. Naga disunity is known worldwide.

Consequently Naga issue may be forever. The present generation inherited nothing from Flanders, Kohima battle, or third degree preceding Shillong Accord. Indian Infantry is famous for its toughness. Our family participated in both WWs loyally so we are familiar with the subject.

The supreme organization NNC asked not to trouble Indian civilians, women and children. The last two categories are safe with tribes, but it is pure racism that is meted out to males. Exploitation of traders is now less as they give protection money to ‘national workers’ regularly. Others yet suffer though with education and population explosion it has lessened. Police and public conveniently look other side. On the contrary some Indians helped innocent Nagas and suffered at Indian Security hands. Racism prevents Nagas to acknowledge their sacrifice. So they behead Mahatma Gandhi’s statue at Kohima capital.

Outsiders come here for gain (me never). Financial corruption was taught by outsiders who took bigger share of the loot. Early 1974 I was compelled to come to Kohima since then I kept in touch with Nagas. Naga politics and administration are no better as corruption permeates upto any level. Late KV Pusa talked in Union Baptist Church ‘why politician alone, corruption is prevalent in church also’. Nothing, but the truth.

Thus in a sold out society on ill gotten wealth outsiders make hay. Black money and Christian faith keep Nagas away from Beijing. I saw many evangelists in the past who struggled hard in a selfless manner. Spirituality is not found nowadays. S Korea and Japan are interacting with Nagas to revive them in addition to the usual charitable money bag entities. Occasionally local theologians speak on growth in Indian communalism. PM Nehru always apprehended a majority Hindu reactionary backlash as a consequence of two nation hypothesis and Pakistan. Babri was built on Ram’s birth place (Ayodhya), Mathura Shahi mosque on Krishna’s, Taj Mahal was a Shiva temple purchased by Shah Jahan – my Spanish speaking niece who had been to Barcelona Olympics with US team told about a church’s becoming a mosque 16 times but finally captured by Christians. What about ‘Pray for Jerusalem’! Details are available there. It is not India or Hindu centric. Armageddon is due.

India became a Nation when INC was founded at Mumbai by an Irish man mentioning the term Nation. Otherwise India was the cradle of human civilization – recent Indo-US discovery of river Saraswati (flows underground to Prayag in Allahahbad) civilization dates our civilization a few millennia back (from Indus Valley).Patriotism, Nation etc have many later day interpretations because culture varies. Humanity is at present worried over international terror activities.

Nagas in general are good human beings though a wild streak is present in them that is visible in the segregated society with difficult dialects. Neither they follow things in their proper perspective nor understand if they are misguided by others.

The result is that ‘tomorrow’ has vanished. Rev Wati wrote (NL Post in ULB agitation period)“we are looking backward to move forward”. It again is a bitter truth. Today is all or Now itself. Naga students prefer Arts or Humanities (Ladies subjects only) or Divinity, but not science and technology. Lack of education is the root cause of all ills.

Yitachu several times pointed out the state of education. Dr. Shürhozelie too. So long as Naga literacy is decided by their familiarity with Romans and dialects do not have any that long Tangkhul, Rongmei, Chin Kuki, Meitei, Nepali, plains people (may be Martians if any) and all Mongolians would exploit Naga money given by GOI. My last 4 decades here have been the experience of a life time.

Basic education is rarely found.

It needs overhauling.

A solution to the long standing Naga problem is expected any day. Independence Day speech of PM from Red Fort ramparts may announce it.

Much maligned by outsiders and sinned against by insiders Naga society is in for an Acid Test for the same. UNPO recognition was misunderstood as grant of a UN seat to independent Nagaland so wildly celebrated here (feasts and all that). I witnessed it. Things would have been better if late Isak Swu who reportedly sought for Graduates from Sumis at Hebron) were alive today. The state language day to day is Nagamese because English is meant for educated people. Khaplang’s departure at this juncture is indeed untimely.

The 1980 trio is now represented

by T Muivah alone who should involve his advisors to educate the people about peace talks else reservations would continue in secrecy. Prof Horam (convincing Nagamese), women wing etc are quiet for years. No one act play in English is necessary for Naga society. May God bless the simple Nagas in the coming days.

Making connection through prayers

believe, as Christians, we all know the power of prayer uttered in all humility and in true faith. But do you personally know how powerful your prayers are? They flow out of your mouth and go out and find anybody that you want to pray for, wherever they are.

It doesn’t matter who or where they are, God doesn’t even have to have their address. He already knows it.

Going by the times, it’s sad that we don’t pray more for others, because there are so many people we could pray for and help.

When you think about someone, you can send out a little prayer, just like a tracer. But a thought about someone or something is not a prayer, a thought is just like an employee who’s standing there waiting for a command, or an order. And if he just stands there and waits, he will never get anything done.

A thought is only the beginning of a prayer. But just thinking about it is not going to work out. You have to put feet to your prayer and send it away.

There’s so much that you will never know that you didn’t establish because you didn’t pray.

When you think about someone that you love, or someone that you feel sorry for or that you know needs your help, it’s God by His Holy Spirit putting that thought in your mind.

Sending a prayer on is just like a telephone call! You are like a telephone exchange., and God sends the call. But it’s upto you to make connection to convey to the party that needs to receive it. But if you only think about them and you just cut it off, it’s like you are turning the phone off on God! God’s trying to make a phone call and He gives you the number, and wants you to put it through. YOU ARE THE OPERATOR. God’s the One who’s calling but He tries to put it through you because He wants to show you what Love really is.

Love is making connection from God to somebody who needs your love.

You’re the Operator. And if you don’t make the connection, if you are lazy, and slow and negligent and you don’t care and you don’t want to be bothered with these calls, so you don’t make the connection, then it’s a broken connection, and they will never get the message, they will never receive the love, and so there’s never any answer.

Isn’t it wonderful to be an operator? So much depends on you and your prayers, because there are a lot of people who are turned on, and who already want to receive...

When we fail and don’t make the connection, when we don’t flip the switch and don’t plug it in, it’s so sad!

We have a switch right in our mind, and all we have to do is flip it. The power comes from God. It’s so sad when we don’t pray and we don’t flip the switch. And there are others who love God and listening and getting the message, but then we are lazy and we are not concerned. We don’t flip the switch and send it on to the recipient!

And there are some people on the other end that,’ even though they are connected, if they don’t pick the receive and answer, then they will never get the message.

And that’s just how simple it is!

When God puts the thought in your mind about someone, that’s a message from God. He wants you to be the operator and put that call through by prayer.

That’s all you can do!

If you are willing to be an operator , you have to put in the plug and make the connection.

Irregular electricity in Dimapur

The trend of load shedding (for whatever reasons) in Dimapur is becoming unbearable with the mercury rising to such uncomfortable heights.

Dimapur city is considered as the fastest growing metropolis in the state and given the irregularity of electricity in the district; I cannot help but imagine the plight of other smaller and far flung districts.

When the state cannot provide a commodity to the people for which the citizen takes due responsibility to pay for, how can the people expect a good service for those commodities that comes as subsidy under various schemes. Scores of business establishments depend on electricity for their daily sustenance but more than half of the day those establishments have to wait for electricity and thus run at a loss.

The government should take due cognizance of this issue and make serious ramifications so that people may atleast stop dreading over the state of affairs of the state over even the most basic and rightful commodity like electricity. And the department should stop making lame excuses as they are only making themselves a laughing stock in the eyes of the general mass.

Can’t be intimidated with threats, Mamata tells GJM

Bhangar/Darjeeling, Jun 12 (IANS): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday asserted she will not be intimidated with Gorkha Janmukti Morcha’s (GJM) “threats” and claimed it will run away after spurring episodes of violence.

“I don’t bow down to threats. If I am threatened, I know how to get the work done. Didn’t you see how they (the GJM) had tried to intimidate me in Darjeeling? They had said they will not let me access the hills... but I went there, held meetings and safeguarded peace.

“They threw bombs for two days and then you will see that they ran away.

People will remain there.

The hill people are ve r y g o o d . G o o n d a s (hooligans) can never be country’s asset,” Banerjee said addressing a public meeting here in South 24 Parganas district.

The GJM called for a shutdown in the Northern West Bengal hills, beginning Monday, demanding a separate Gorkhaland.

“If you have any grievances against political leaders

in Bhangar, then please let me know. My officers will convey the details.

I will not communicate with any political parties which come from outside,” she said.

She assuaged fears of farmers over forced land acquisition, saying that her government has brought a law to forbid conversion of agricultural land for promoting business.

“Goondas (hooligans) are coming from outside and fooling you.

The real reason is some promoters and developers want to acquire the farmlands at a low price and construct multistorey apartments.

Some brokers have come together.

These developers are bringing in the miscreants. These promoting companies are trying to cheat farmers and grab their land.

“Some Maoist is collecting money from you on false claims. That person will take the money and run away. Some people have brought arms and bombs from outside and they have stockpiled them in the villages.

“If you don’t surrender arms to police, we will recover them either today or tomorrow. We will recover the bombs as well.

Who will guarantee that the villagers will not be killed from the arms?

Who will guarantee villagers are not murdered by those weapons?” she asked.

Loan waiver alone cannot solve agrarian crisis: Nitish Patna, JUN 12 (AGENCIES): Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Monday said loan waiver is not the only solution to the “agrarian crisis” affecting several parts of the country.

He said the NDA government should fulfil its poll promise and give production cost plus 50 per cent as minimum support price (MSP) to farmers.

“Major parts of the country are facing an agrarian crisis today. It is ironical that both production and productivity of farm sector have increased, but farmers are in distress as they are not getting fair price of their produce as their input cost is increasing. This is the real problem,” Kumar told reporters on the sidelines of a ‘Lok Samvad’ programme. “Loan waiver is an aspect, but it alone cannot be the only way to resolve the agrarian crisis or lessen the problems of farmers,” he said in reply to a question on whether his government too proposed to waive off farmers’ debt or interest on the lines of Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh.

“The Centre should consider announcing production cost plus 50 per cent as MSP in order to resolve the agrarian crisis,” Kumar said reminding the poll promise of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP ahead of the 2014 general elections. “During the Lok Sabha polls of 2014, Modi, the then Prime Ministerial candidate of BJP as

On the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), Kumar said insurance companies are benefiting from the scheme more than the farmers.

“The scheme is not meant for farmers, but for insurance companies as they stand to get maximum benefit out of it,” the Bihar Chief Minister said.

He also said details of how compensation paid by insurance companies to farmers against the premium paid by the Centre and the state, should also be made public.

NEW DELHI, Jun 12 (AGENCIES): The government is all set to roll out the process for the Rs 60,000-crore submarine programme, moving swiftly after unveiling a major policy for defence manufacturing in the country.

The project is set to be the first one to be launched under the ambitious ‘Strategic Partnership’ model finalised last month which aims to rope in leading private players for defence production. The defence ministry is likely to issue the Expression of Interest for the project soon, to kick start the process for mega deal, official sources said.

Engineering conglomerate Larsen and Toubro and Reliance Defence are the only two defence firms eligible to participate in the P-75 I programme, said another source.

The government will subsequently initiate the process to shortlist the foreign original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) for the project based laid down norms in the strategic partnership model.

Six Scorpene-class submarines are currently being built under ‘Project 75’ of the Indian Navy. The submarines, designed by French naval defence and energy company DCNS, are being built by Mazagon Dock Limited in Mumbai.

The project P-75 (I) will be a follow-on project of Project 75. A total of six submarines are to be built under the P-75 (I) project.

Referring to the internal security situation, the home minister said although Myanmar border is peaceful and friendly, yet it is very sensitive. Singh advised the state governments to extend cooperation in the survey work for erection, construction of subsidiary pillars for removing differences in perception of zero line and for understanding the boundary demarcation clearly.

He sought cooperation of the chief ministers and the people in the region for the joint survey of border pillars on the boundary.

Singh said there are over 240 villages with over 2.5 lakh people within 10 kms of the border.

He urged upon the chief ministers to bring these areas

under active policing by setting up police stations and police posts to reassure the people and also to prevent illegal cross-border activities.

Singh said a steady progress in infrastructure development has been made in the region including in inter and intra-regional road, rail and air connectivity, power, education, health and setting up of institutions of excellence and research in various fields. The home minister said greater connectivity within the region and with the neighbours was likely to give impetus to enhanced movement of goods, services and people across the border.

Improved connectivity and relations with Myanmar were opening new opportunities of growth in the region and these would play a much greater role in near future and therefore, the Centre and the states must be adequately prepared for it, he said.

Probe ordered into farmer’s suicide

Ranchi, Jun 12 (IANS): The Jharkhand government on Monday set up a four-member team to probe the suicide of a farmer on the outskirts of Ranchi.

Kaleshwar Mahto, 44, committed suicide on Saturday. He is survived by his wife, two daughters and parents.

According to family members, he was in tension due to a loan he had taken. He left behind a suicide note which said he was in distress over the loan.

Jharkhand Agriculture Secretary on Monday set up a panel to probe the incident.

Mumbai, Jun 12 (PTI): The benchmark Sensex tumbled over 166 points today to close at a two-week low of 31,096 as investors remained on the sidelines ahead of key macroeconomic data amid weakness in global peers.

The Sensex resumed lower and dropped further to 31,044.28 due to heavy selling pressure in view of foreign capital outflows and lower global cues before closing at 31,095.70, a loss of 166.36 points, or 0.53 per cent. This is the lowest since May 26 when it ended at 31,028.21.

The gauge had gained 48.70 points in the previous session on Friday.

The 50-issue NSE Nifty ended 51.85 points, or 0.54 per cent, at 9,616.40 after cracking below 9,600 mark to touch a low of 9,598.50. Sentiments was dampened by global cues after polls in the UK threw up a hung Parliament and markets await the results of the first round of France’s Er. Senkathung Jami with Rev. New Delhi, Jun 12 (PTI): With ordinance in place, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today said the RBI is at a fairly advanced stage of preparing a list of borrowers where NPA resolution is required under the insolvency law and action on this front is expected soon.

The ordinance was promulgated last month amending the Banking Regulation Act, 1949, to empower the Reserve Bank of India to resolve the thorny issue of non-performing assets (NPAs) or bad loans.

The government empowered the RBI to ask banks to initiate insolvency proceedings to recover bad loans and promised more measures to resolve the NPA problem.

Man sentenced to death for blasphemy in Pak LAHORE, JUN 12 (PTI): A man belonging to the minority Shia community in Pakistan has been sentenced to death by an antiterrorism court for posting blasphemous content on Facebook, the first capital punishment handed down for blasphemy on social media in the country.

The sentence is the harshest among cybercrime related sentences handed down so far in the country. Pakistan has never executed anyone convicted of blasphemy.

Judge Shabir Ahmed of the Anti-Terrorism Court in Punjab province’s Bahawalpur district announced the sentence for 30-year-old Taimoor Raza on Saturday after holding him guilty of posting derogatory content on Facebook.

SANAA, JUN 12 (IANS): The World Health Organisation (WHO) announced that the toll in the cholera outbreak in Yemen has reached 859, with 70 new deaths reported in the last three days.

The WHO on Sunday said the number of suspected cases has increased to 116,700, 14,880 more than on June 8, reports Efe news.

The epidemic, which began in April, has spread to 20 out of the 22 provinces in the country; especially in capital Sanaa and, the agency added. The organisation warned that the healthcare system in Yemen is on the verge of collapse as many hospitals have shut down because of the ongoing conflict, saying only 45 per cent of them are still operational and they are facing a shortage of supplies and staff.

The war has so far killed more than 10,000 people, half of them civilians, and displaced over 2 million others, according to humanitarian agencies.

Panama Papers: Sharif to appear before probe panel ISLAMABAD, JUN 12 (IANS): Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will appear before a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) in connection with the Panama Papers probe into his family’s assets, the media reported on Monday.

Sharif on Thursday will become the first sitting Pakistani Prime Minister to appear before an investigating agency, reports Dawn news. On June 8, the team issued summons asking Sharif “to appear on Thursday, June 15 at 11 a.m., at

the office of the JIT, Federal Judicial Academy, Islamabad”.

The summons also instructed the Prime Minister to “kindly bring along relevant record/documents/ material” related to the Panama Papers case which will entail nearly all the documents and evidence submitted before the Supreme Court by Sharif ’s counsel, Makhdoom Ali Khan.

Sources said that Finance Minister Ishaq Dar may also be questioned by the team before Sharif ’s ap-

pearance. In its judgement of April 20 in the Panama Papers case, the Supreme Court had constituted the JIT and empowered it to summon the Prime Minister, his sons and any other person necessary, to investigate allegations of moneylaundering, through which the four apartments in London’s Park Lane area were purchased. On June 2, the Prime Minister’s youngest son Hassan Nawaz appeared before the six-member probe team headed by Federal Investigation Agency (FIA)

Projections showed Macron continuing his centrist revolution, with his Republique en Marche (Republic on the Move, REM) party and its ally MoDem tipped to win between 400 and 445 seats in the 577member National Assembly in next Sunday’s second round. Macron’s camp is expected to significantly boost its score in Sunday’s second round with voters fed up with mainstream politics keen to try out his team, half of which is composed of rookie politicians.

They include Marie Sara, a retired bullfighter, who is running neck-andneck with FN stalwart Gilbert Collard in southern France, and star mathematician Cedric Villani running for office in the southern Paris suburb of Essonne.

merican actor Stephen Lang is excited about the sequels of “Avatar”. He says the upcoming parts of the James Cameron film are “beautifully written” and will expand the universe of Pandora in an emotional manner.

“The sequels are extraordinary. I cannot share a lot but I can tell you that there are four of them and I have read them all. They are very exciting and very emotional. The world that was presented in ‘Avatar’ is expanded upon,” Lang told IANS over phone from New York.

Lang was seen as Colonel Miles Quaritch, the antagonist in the 2009 film which narrated the story of a conflict between humans and the blue-skinned alien race Na’vi of Pandora, the alien world.

The second part is scheduled to release in 2020, and will be followed by other parts in 2021, 2024 and 2025.

Lang, who was praised for playing the role of a blind man in “Don’t Breathe”, which will find its way onto Indian small screen on June 14 on Sony PIX, added that the sequels will give a “much larger and extensive look” at the world of Pandora.

The Handshake Concert began as a means to celebrate friendship and culture, and promotion of goodwill through music, and has come a long way from where it first began.

The idea was born with the World Music Day celebration organised by the Rattle and Hum Music Society, Nagaland under the patronage of Northeast Zone Culture Centre, Government of India on 21st June during 2008 at Shilpgram, Guwahati.

Chief Minister of Odisha Naveen Patnaik on Monday flagged off the Asian Athletics Championships’ mascot rally which will tour all the 30 districts of the state to spread awareness and publicity for the event.

Costa awaits Chelsea final call L o nd o n , J u n 1 2 (IANS): English football champions Chelsea are still to make any final decision on the future of their star striker Diego Costa.

According to a Sky Sports report, Costa still has two years of the contract left with Chelsea but is unsure if the London club will consider him. Costa has revealed that he received a message from head coach Antonio Conte who is not considering the Spaniard as part of his future plan.

“I have a contract with Chelsea, they have to know what to do with me and I have to wait and know the decision that my club takes,” Costa said.

Costa also said he might consider a loan move to Spain or Brazil and affirmed on ruling out China for a move.

“They can loan me out to some team in Spain, Brazil or wherever, but I have to play,” he said.

Costa also revealed about his worn out relationship with Conte. “In life there are good and bad people. I’ll stay with the good of everything. You have to ask him, not me. It’s an opinion of the coach, if he has the option of putting another in,” he stressed.

“But there are things and ways of doing things and saying them. But well, thanks to God I do not lack teams,” he added.

Insigne masterpiece sets up Italy win

Heena, Jitu win mixed team 10m gold at ISSF WC NEW DELHI, Jun 12 (Agencies): Ace shooters Jitu Rai and Heena Sidhu delivered India its first medal at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup Rifle/Pistol series being held in Gabala, Azerbaijin by combining superbly to claim gold in the mixed team 10m air pistol event.

Jitu and Heena forged a stirring recovery from 0-4 to 7-6, thus giving India’s shooting contingent at the tournament reason to cheer. The pair had also won gold at the ISSF World Cup held in New Delhi earlier this year. The mixed team air pistol event is one of the new events added for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

During the tournament, India’s Sanjeev Rajput could not qualify for the final of men’s 50m rifle prone event, in which 2012 Olympic medalist Gagan Narang was 25th.

New Delhi, Jun 12 (IANS): The Indian Super League (ISL) football tournament will see two new teams from next season with the introduction of franchises from Jamshedpur and Bengaluru.

The Jamshedpur franchise is owned by Tata Steel Limited while the Jindal South West (JSW) group owns the Bengaluru team.

“The ISL, in its fourth edition, will witness an expanded five-month module with number of participating clubs increasing to 10 from its original eight founding member city clubs,” Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL), the organisers of the ISL, said in a statement on Monday.

“The inclusion of two new clubs came through the ‘Invitation To Bid’ tender process floated by FSDL last month. An independent panel along with consulting firm EY evaluated the bids to present its report today to the panel, in the presence of All India Football Federation (AIFF)

General Secretary Kushal Das,” the statement said.

“Tata Steel Ltd, which has won the bid to participate in ISL from Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, are the pioneering Indian corporate to have provided national football with perennial pool of young footballers since 1987 through its Jamshedpur based facility -Tata Football Academy “JSW Group which owns the successful football club Bengaluru FC through its subsidiary JSW Sports won the right to participate in ISL from Bengaluru city.

JSW Group has to its credit established a very successful and professionally run football club in I-League within a short period of 3 years; winning the competition twice including in its debut year,” the statement added.

The ISL started in 2014 with eight city based teams -- Atletico de Kolkata, NorthEast United, Delhi Dynamos, FC Goa, Mumbai City FC, FC Pune City, Chennaiyin FC and Kerala Blasters.

Kolkata giants Mohun Bagan and East Bengal were also in talks with the AIFF in recent days over their inclusion in the ISL. But the negotiations hit a roadblock after the two clubs laid down several conditions before the AIFF. Among other things, the two clubs have demanded that they should be exempt from paying the franchisee fee of Rs 15 crore and they should be allowed to use Kolkata as their home base.

by Mohun Bagan and East Bengal have grave implications for Atletico de Kolkata -- the current ISL representatives from the city -- as it will mean that their support base in football-crazy West Bengal will disappear overnight.
