12 dead in NE as rain wreaks havoc GuwahAtI/AIZAWL, Jun 13 (Agencies): Heavy, non-stop rain lashed large swathes of the Northeast leaving at least 12 people dead on Tuesday. The weather condition also forced Union home minister Rajnath Singh, who was on a two-day visit to Mizoram, to cancel his scheduled trip to the India-Myanmar border areas. According to reports, flash floods claimed 10 lives in Mizoram’s Lunglei district bordering Bangladesh and Myanmar while two people, including a minor, were electrocuted on a flooded road in Guwahati. Officials in Mizoram said heavy rainfall since Sunday morning caused flash flood in Lunglei district where river Karnafulu and its tributaries were flowing above the danger mark. Thairungkai village in the district bore the brunt of the sudden rush of water that swept away the 10 people along with some houses. With weather hampering rescue operations, only four bodies could be recovered so far. “Apart from Lunglei, Aizawl and Serchhip districts have been affected with almost 450 houses ei-

ther submerged or damaged by floods and landslides,” Mizoram’s health minister Lal Thanzara said. Some 50 families hit by landslides in state capital Aizawl were evacuated to safer locations, he said. Officials said National Highway 306, the state’s lifeline running from the northern to the southern end, has been cut off at many places due to landslides. Rajnath Singh, who reached Aizawl on Monday for a security-related meeting of states bordering

Myanmar, had to make a change of travel plan on his way back to Delhi on Tuesday. He had to take the road to Lengui airport, 35km from Aizawl, as the chopper could not take off. In Guwahati, a class 8 student of a private school and a rickshaw puller were electrocuted when their rickshaw came into contact with a live wire in the city’s flooded Zoo Road area. “ADC Palash Pratim Bora has been entrusted to probe the incident and submit a report while Rs 4

lakh has been announced as ex-gratia compensation for the victims’ families,” deputy commissioner M Angamuthu told HT. All schools and colleges in the city have been asked to remain closed as large areas have been inundated, he added. Manipur and Meghalaya too experienced floods and landslides with many houses and roads having been damaged. Several relief camps have been set up in Imphal Valley and in some affected hill districts.

KOHIMA, JUN 13 (NPN): Nagaland home minister, Y. Patton said there was a need to maintain Free Movement Regime (FMR) in Nagaland sector of India-Myanmar border but without insisting on the need to obtain passes from the local administrative officers as it would cause undue inconveniences and hardships to the local people. Speaking at the meeting of chief ministers of the northeastern states, convened by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and union home minister of state, Kiren Rijiju, in Aizwal on Monday, Patton suggested introducing a temporary passes valid for three days to visit border townships located within 16km distance for shopping and other visits. Further, the state home minister also suggested that restriction on various constructions activities along the India-Myanmar border needed to be relaxed. He pointed out that currently there were many restrictions on various kinds of construction activities taking place along the border.

KOHIMA, JUN 13 (NPN): There is discernible disquiet in the corridors of power in Kohima both within the political and bureaucratic blocs after raids by Income Tax (Intelligence & Criminal Investigation) on ThursdayFriday on the business premises of M.K.R. Pillai retired Addl. SP and Consultant to DGP where unaccounted money to the tune of Rs. 400 crore was found and an estimated Rs.1000 crore investment under his firm Sreevalsam Group. “Pillai Sir” as he is known and addressed even by senior police officers, has spread his influence far and wide but officers in the PHQ didn’t want to talk about the Pillai affair for whatever reasons. However, a senior IPS officer ventured to interact with media and appeared more intent on apportioning the blame on the system and those around it. According to the senior IPS officer, the main factor for Pillai’s meteoric ascendency was because no one in Nagaland followed the rules. He pointed to the spate of rampant backdoor appointments as example. He also said no government servant adhered to the Nagaland Government Servant Conduct Rules 1968 meant to prevent corruption. Interestingly, while the main topic was to have been M.KR. Pillai and how he misused his influence and clout to create such multicrore empire, the senior IPS officer appeared to believe that a lax attitude among

NTC media cell said that the message was conveyed to the committee during the meeting with NNPGs at Tourist Lodge Dimapur on June 12. In this regard, NTC said the six NNPGs would jointly work under the Working Group towards the common aspiration of the people. The meeting also reaffirmed its earlier commitment to work cohesively in the best interest of Naga people as a whole.

local officers, who loathe to follow rules, was the root of all the problems. Asked about a comment made by another unnamed senior police officer that the functioning of the Police department would be adversely affected once Pillai is removed; he said it was because Pillai was hard working, efficient and shouldered every responsibility to the extent that the PHQ became totally dependent upon him (Pillai). He said it would not be a surprise if Pillai claimed he had taken permission from the state government to take the Police truck for some errand to his home in Pandalam, Kerala. The senior IPS officer said Pillai was effective in bringing funds from Delhi while Naga officers lacked confidence and boldness to go to Delhi and get works done (bringing funds/projects). He said the law needs to be enforced and without which there will be no fear of the law. It was also learnt that Pillai was awarded President’s Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2005 after obtaining clearance from the State Vigilance Commission about his assets, integrity and not having any previous criminal record(s). Pillai has 20 bank accounts in Nagaland. The IT officials had seized the documents on the amount in Pillai’s bank accounts and transactions as of June 1,2016. The 20 accounts are in ten banks in Kohima, Dimapur and Lerie branches. These accounts had Rs.1,49,96,321 as of June 1,2016 reported Mathrubhumi News.
