12 dead in massive fire in London Death toll likely to rise as search ops continue LONDON, JUN 14 (PTI): Twelve people have been confirmed dead in the inferno which engulfed a west London tower block and the death toll is likely to increase further, according to police.

Commander Stuart Cundy of the Metropolitan police said the operation to recover casualties was going to be long and complex. “I can confirm 12 people have died … I do anticipate that the number of fatalities will increase beyond those 12.

Eighteen people were being treated in critical care.

A limited crew of firefighters remained in the building and drones from Kent fire service were being used to assess the stability of the building.

But the police said a full search of the building had not been completed and the number of dead would rise. Cundy said it was too early to say how many more would be found dead.

More than 250 firefighters worked through the night to rescue residents from their flats after the blaze broke out, shortly before 1am on Wednesday.

The fire rapidly engulfed the full height of the block, and was still burning strongly more than six hours later.

Civil societies pay rich tributes to late Khaplang Correspondent

KOHIMA, JUN 14 (NPN): Members of the Naga civil societies and well wishers paid rich tributes to late SS Khaplang, NSCN (K) chairman during the candle light vigil organized by Naga Students’ Federation at Old MLA hostel junction, Kohima on Wednesday evening.

Speaking on the occasion, NSF president Subentung Kithan said the federation was deeply saddened by the demise of a great national leader, late Khaplang.

Kithan said Khaplang, a tall standing Naga nationalist, made positive and valuable contributions towards the Naga freedom struggle.

As a legendary Naga freedom fighter, he would be the dynamic force of Naga history and the source of inspiration for the Naga freedom struggle and his spirit of unwavering resistance would live in the minds and hearts of the Nagas forever, he added.

Govt sacks Pillai as consultant PHQ CNTC questions benami Correspondent

KO H I M A , J U N 1 4 (NPN): Pushed on the backfoot by media coverage on IT raids on the business empire of M.K.R. Pillai, Consultant to DGP Nagaland, the state government on Wednesday decided to terminate his services with immediate effect.

by DGP Nagaland L.L. Doungel during an interaction at his office chamber. at Police Headquarters (PHQ).

Doungel said the decision was taken in the light of media reports and that the order would be out “in a day or two”.

Doungel, said he questioned Pillai about the raids after returning from Aizawl Wednesday afternoon and was informed that it had to do with filing of IT returns.

Doungel when asked, said he was not privy to how many bank accounts held by Pillai in Nagaland and neither was aware of his private properties.

He also dismissed rumours that Pillai was taking shelter in his residence as there was no such question because he (Pillai) has his own rented place.

DIMAPUR, JUN 14 (NPN): Central Naga Tribes Council (CNTC) has expressed grave concern over recent media revelations on “manipulation and diversion of state police funds under some dubious financial dealings”

by Rajendran Pillai alias ‘Pillai Sir’ who acted as gobetween and broker for the state police department to obtain central funds.

CNTC through its Media Cell, said Pillai who joined as a mere constable 30 years ago, rose up to ASP and was able to accumulate massive wealth to the tune of Rs.1000 crore.

Further, CNTC wondered how state Police vehicles were used to transport cash belonging to Nagaland to Pillai’s home state of Kerala.

It said five police vehicles were discovered by

the IT sleuths which were used to smuggle gold, currency notes and other items.

CNTC slammed as “vague, irrational and illogical” the admission by a police officer that PHQ would be affected if Pillai was removed and that the department became dependent on Pillai because of his efficiency and hard work. Such statement was “an open insult” on the department and other serving Naga officers said CNTC because there are no dearth of dynamic, intelligent, efficient and sincere officers in the department.

CNTC also wondered how the State Vigilance Commission (SVC) could give clearance on Pillai’s assets and integrity in order to enable him to receive President’s Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2005.

KOHIMA, JUN 14 (NPN): Nagaland chief minister and NPF president, Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu on Wednesday reminded all party men that trust was the most important factor in politics saying “it can overcome all differences”.

Addressing the NPF Central Executive Council meeting held at the party’s headquarters in Kohima, Dr. Liezietsu said NPF being one of the biggest and oldest regional political party in the region, there was bound to be differences. However, trust can overcome all such differences, “trust is not a request but has to be earned to prove it,” he stated. In this regard, Dr. Liezietsu urged the party men not to indulge in activities that would create suspicion and break the trust.

He further said NPF was the only viable regional political party in the state with a clear stand and principle. It is a known fact that besides NPF there was no other alternative political party in Nagaland, Dr. Liezietsu said adding, the Congress era was over and there was no chance for them to come back to power. He further appealed to all party workers

to strengthen the NPF-BJP alliance in the state.

While not denying the past and recent crisis within the NPF fold, Dr. Liezietsu however said those days were all over as NPF dissidents had already formed a new party. On Naga political issue, CM said he was hopeful that something good would be achieved out of the ongoing dialogue.

Addressing the CEC meeting, DAN chairman and advisor Finance, T.R. Zeliang called upon the party workers to honour the BJP-NPF coalition and to “accept the fact that we have survived through the stormy weathers because of the unwavering commitment and support of our coalition partners (BJP) along with the Independent MLAs.” He said this was the time for all to complement each other and reaffirm the commitment to work together as coalition partners, he added. In a press note, press secretary to DAN chairman said Zeliang lauded the workshop convened by Ex-Parliamentarians Association of Nagaland on issue of ULB vis-à-vis Art 371A. He said the workshop had “cleared misconceptions, doubts and fear in regard to infringement

of Art-371A though the issue was misinterpreted by some organizations.”

Minister for Forest, Environment and Climate Change, Imkong L. Imchen boldly accepted that he had rebelliously worked against the party to set up a different chief minister while in other camp. He however thanked Dr. Liezietsu for accepting him and some others back to the party fold and also for inducting them in the government as ministers.

He assured to diligently and truthfully fulfil the assignments while also assuring to concentrate in achieving ‘good harvest’ for the NPF Party in the next elections. He said “If we avoid double loyalty, there will not be any trust deficit.”

The source of power of NPF was the people and the party has to become trustworthy for the people he added.

Those who spoke at the meeting include-- RD Minister, C.L John; H&FW minister, P. Longon and parliamentary secretary from Manipur, Awangpo.

KOHIMA, JUN 14 (NPN): Directorate of Higher Education (DoHE) Nagaland has signed MoU with Reliance JioNet on Wednesday at Directorate of Higher Education Kohima.

The MoU was signed by director higher education, Kuholi Chishi and Reliance corporate Mumbai, vice president, Balasubramaniam Iyer.

According to MoU Reliance JioNet would provide high-speed WiFi connection to 17 government colleges across Nagaland.

Terming the signing as “historic” for the de-

partment, Chishi thanked Reliance Jio for providing free and uninterrupted services to the students at their colleges.

She said with this facilities students would be able to update the students on the latest happenings and help them to gather knowledge from around the world. In his address, Lyer said Jio Digital Life in college campus would bring revolutionary change where the students would have access to all internet facilities along with the rest of the world.

DIMAPUR: At the initiative of the Governor of Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh, PB Acharya, the Manipal University, Manipal, Karnataka and the DG Ruparel College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Mumbai under Mumbai University have announced seats in their institutions so as to provide opportunities to the students from Nagaland.

According to Raj Bhavan PRO, the SNDT University in Mumbai and Alva Education Foundation, Mangalore have also agreed to provide opportunities to the students of the State and would announce their programmes soon.

NITTE Medical Science University of Mangalore has also agreed to enter into Public Private Partnership (PPP) for setting up of a medical college in strategic boarder area of the State.

DG Ruparel College of Arts, Science and Commerce has informed that the college would provide admission to four male students from Nagaland for the promotion of national integrity and culture enrichment.

The College has arranged for a sponsor for the tuition fees of the students and would also provide accommodation in the Boy’s Hostel of the College free of cost. However, the boarding expenses as well as other expenses would have to be borne by the students.

The college would be offering the following papers/courses to the students –– B. Sc in Computer Science, M Sc in Computer Science. B Sc in Information Technology, M. Sc in Information Technology, Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS), M Com (Advance Accountancy), B Com Div III & Div IV Unaided and M Sc in Analytical Chemistry. Interested students may choose any of the subjects offered by the College.

The recommended students would be admitted to the College on merit basis subject to the fulfilment of the admission criteria specified by the University of Mumbai.

According to PRO to governor, Acharya administered the oath taking ceremony which was presided over by the chief secretary of Nagaland, Pankaj Kumar.

by organising street plays at Super Market Dimapur and Railway Station.

The aim of the street plays was to spread

awareness on the rising spate of child abuse and also domestic workers right. Through poster campaign and distribution of the pamphlets, ACID also created awareness on implementation of social security schemes, inclusion in the schedule employment.

In Dimapur Railway station, the children held placards that read, “Do a Favour, avoid child Labour”, “Children Should have pens in their hands not tools”, “ Say no to child Labour”, “Enough is Enough, Stop Child Labour”, “No to child Labour, Yes to Quality Education”.

After the play Sunita Thabah called upon the people to fight against the child abuse in different ways and made them aware the four rights of the children like, right to survival, right to participation, right to development and right to protection.

More condolences news in brief on Khaplang’s demise

DIMAPUR: Civil society organisations, Naga political groups and individuals from across the state and outside have expressed condolences at the demise of NSCN/GPRN president, S.S Khaplang who passed away on June 9 at NSCN/GPRN Council Headquarters Taka, Myanmar.

NPGN/NNC (NA): NPGN/NNC (NA) has expressed deep sorrow at the demise of NSCN (K) chairman S. S. Khaplang, the group through its MIP kilonser described late Khaplang as not only a dedicated patriot but the selfless torchbearer and a good stalwart of the Nagas who had sacrificed his entire life for the cause of sovereignty of the Nagas.

NPGN/NNC (NA) stated that although Khaplang was no more his noble deed for the Nagas would never be erased from the history of Naga struggle for freedom and that the legacy he has left behind would ever be honoured.

NPGN/NNC (NA) MIP stated that the collective leadership, all and file of the group pay homage and salute the departed leader. It has also extended heartfelt condolences to be bereaved family members and prayed for the departed soul to rest in peace.

gion Khiamniungan Students’ Union (ERKSU) while expressing heartfelt condolences at the demise of late S.S Khaplang chairman recalled his unwavering and brave stand for the Naga freedom. ERKSU described him as a man who had loved his people.

The union regretted the lost of great leader, who had inspired the younger generation and was a legend.

SPFDD: Sangtam Peoples Forum Dimapur District (SPFDD) has condoled the sudden demise of patriotic leader late S. S. Khaplang, who dedicated his whole life for the cause of the Nagas. A condolence note by SPFDD stated that the leader’s dedication would be remembered and his legacy would continue for generations to come. SPFDD has conveyed its condolence to the bereaved family and prayed for the departed soul to rest in peace.

Further, SPFDD has also appealed to all sections and organisations to unite under the spirit of oneness and brotherhood and urged the political groups to respond to the cry of the people for peace. It expressed hope that all the groups would come under the umbrella of ceasefire and secession of hostilities.

NSSATA Tuensang unit appeals for pending salary DIMAPUR: Nagaland Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan Teachers Association (NSSATA) Tuensang unit has reminded the government to respond to their demand for release of pending salaries as per the written assurance No. NSSATA/ULT/01/06 given by the government on November 2, 2016.

In a press release, Nagaland Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan Teachers Association, Tuensang unit president, Tochijung Chang and member Selongkyu stated that the SSA teachers were compelled to ask the government for the failures that has brought untold miseries to the teachers for the past years since their appointment.

Fur ther, the CEC resolved to request the Chief Election Commissioner of the Election Commission of India to expedite the process of holding the bye elections to 10 Northern Angami I Assembly Constituency considering the crucial stage of the Naga political dialogue and the need for a strong and stable government in the State.

ANDMSA submits 3-point charter of demands to CM

DIMAPUR: Alleging failure and lackadaisical attitude of the committee for framing of district ministerial service rules towards the district ministerial service, the All Nagaland District Ministerial Service Association (ANDMSA) has placed a threepoint charter of demands before the state chief minister seeking his intervention.

In a press release, ANDMSA president Shilumenba Alinger, vice president Inato Sangtam and general secretary T. Limhachan Kithan said the representation dated June 13, 2017 was has submitted to the Nagaland chief minister.

The three-point charter of demands include –– amalgamation of directorate and district ministerial cadre into common ministerial cadre; creation of HA/Sr. HA in all the independent DDOs and SDHA to sub-divisions and re-designation and elevation of DHA and Sr. HA post to that of district superintendent class-i gazette and SDHA/accountant to that of asst. superintendent class-II. The signatories said that there was vast disparity in pay range and

post held between the directorate and district ministerial service when the recruitment policy and criteria of both were same.

ANDMSA reminded that it had earlier submitted two representations to the committee dated August 3, 2015 and February 18, 2016 and a reminder dated September 14, 2016 and ultimatum dated October 19, 2016 to the chief secretary. However, the association said its request was not considered. In this regard, the association said it had decided to go a state-wide agitation as decided by the house in the Federal Assembly on July 24, 2016. However, the association later decided not to go for agitation with a view to not harass the general public. Therefore, the ANDMSA has appealed to the chief minister to “intervene into our case compassionately” and deliver justice to the district ministerial employees.

Meanwhile, the association has requested all the district units to be ready for any consequences in the event of failure on the part of the government to address its demands as decided on May 16, 2017.

‘World Blood Donors Day’ observed in Dmu, Phek, Kma

DIMAPUR, JUN 14 (NPN): World Blood Donor Day was observed in Dimapur, Phek and Kohima on Wednesday.

The day was observed under the theme “What can you do?” and slogan “Give blood, give now, give often”.

In Dimapur, District Hospital Dimapur (DHD) blood bank collected 40 units of blood as organizations and voluntary nonremunerated blood donors considering the day as an opportunity to save lives came forward and donated blood.

More than 20 to 30 members of Eagle Club Longsa (Mokokchung) Dimapur division and Network of Blood Donors (NOBD) also voluntarily participated at the programme.

Speaking to Nagaland Post, Eagle Club Longsa (Mokokchung) Dimapur division member, Meren Temjen, said the club members organised blood donation in commemoration of its 50th anniversary.

He also requested all Naga people to come forward to donate blood which would help in saving precious lives. Temjen also informed that the club was associated with the DHD blood bank and that people could avail its service.

Meanwhile, DHD blood bank also listed the numbers of blood donors in order to encourage more people to donate blood voluntarily even in the days to come. Altogether 150 number of blood donors have been enlisted at DHD blood bank.

DC & DEO Zbto informs on ‘special drive’ DIMAPUR: Deputy Commissioner & District Election Officer (DEO), Zunheboto, T.Roy has informed all stakeholders under Zunheboto district that Election Commission of India (ECI) would be launching a programme “Special Drive” from July 1 to 31.

In a press release, DC/DEO Zunheboto has informed that during the programme Booth Level Officers (BLOs) would go for a door to door visit to collect Form-6 from left out electorates particularly persons in age group of 1821 years.

It stated that on July 8 and July 22, BLOs would sit at the polling stations with adequate number of Form-6 and Final Electoral Roll 2017 would also be displayed in all designated polling stations.

Guwahati administrative officials said that the body of a man in his mid-20s was fished out of a city canal Tuesday night.

The man is believed to have drowned when half the city was under knee or neckdeep water on Tuesday. A 13-year-old student and a carpenter were electrocuted by a submerged live wire, reported The Hindustan Times.

A 35-year-old farmer was also swept away on Tuesday night by a turbulent Imphal River in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district while hundreds of localities in Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal, Senapati districts

faced flash floods with at least six rivers in spate.

Manipur’s Thoubal rivers were flowing above the danger mark on Wednesday. The worst affected areas included Kaziranga in chief minister N Biren’s Heingang constituency, and Sagolband, Uripok, and Kalapahar in the hilly Kangpokpi district. Rain and flash floods also destroyed standing crops in many places while some villages including Makuilongdi in Senapati district have been cut off after the roads were washed away.

Biren, accompanied by irrigation and flood control minister Letpao Haokip, visited the flood-hit Kairang areas on Wednesday to take stock of the situation. On Tuesday, social welfare and cooperation minister Nemcha Kipgen visited the Kalikhola area of Kangpokpi district where the earth has developed long cracks, as

if devastated by an earthquake. Many people have relocated from the area in fear.

Assam State Disaster Management authorities, meanwhile, said that the Brahmaputra and it’s tributaries continue to flow above the danger mark though the intensity is lower than on Tuesday. So far, some 40,000 people across 39 villages in four districts have been affected by flood while there has been no casualty apart from the three deaths in Guwahati on Tuesday.

In Mizoram too, there were no reports of loss of life or property on Wednesday. Gujarat text book blunder bringing shame to India: Cong Itanagar, Jun 14 (PTI): The blunder in a Gujarat government school text book referring to Jesus Christ as ‘haivaan’ (devil) has brought shame to India, Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee president Takam Sanjoy said Wednesday.

This was particularly shameful as Gujarat was the land of Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Ballav Bhai Patel and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Sanjoy told PTI. He called for immediate remedial steps to assuage the hurt sentiment of Indians, particularly the Christian community.

The class IX Hindi language textbook published by the Gujarat State School Textbook Board has used ‘haivaan’ (devil) before Jesus Christ, instead of the intended word ‘bhagwan’ (God) in one of its chapters, which triggered protests from Christians.

The board has removed the controversial word in the online version of the book available on its website.

Deluge deaths reach five in Assam’s Guwahati city Guwahati, Jun 14 (IANS): The toll in the first deluge of the monsoon reached five on Wednesday, with deaths of three more persons reported from different parts of the city on Wednesday, the Kamrup (Metro) district administration said. Two persons, including a school student, were electrocuted on Tuesday during the flash floods. Their bodies were recovered on Wednesday morning. An elderly woman died in Nabin Nagar area of the city as no ambulance could reach her house when she suffered a heart attack on Tuesday night. Nabin Nagar is one of the most water-logged areas in the city where the district administration officials had to run rubber rafts to evacuate people from their marooned houses.

The residents of Guwahati city had to struggle with the floods for the second day on Wednesday as many houses remained submerged till late in the evening in different parts of the city. Schools, colleges and other educational institutions remained closed for the second day. Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has offered his condolences on the tragic loss of lives and directed the Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup (Metro) district to personally hand over Rs 4 lakh ex-gratia payment to the next of kin of those killed.

The Chief Minister has been keeping a close watch on the situation and has directed the district administration, District Disaster Management Authority and Guwahati Development Department to be ready with relief materials and to reach out to the affected people in case of any exigency.

CRPF IG shunted after calling Assam encounter fake Guwahati, Jun 14 (Agencies): CRPF Inspector General (IG), posted in the Northeast Rajnish Rai has been transferred with immediate effect, according to Indian Express report.

Incidentally, Rai had alleged that an encounter carried by a joint squad of Army, CRPF, SSB and state police in Assam in March this year, in which two men were killed, was fake. Rai, who was posted at Shillong, was asked to join the Counter Insurgency and Anti Terrorism (CIAT) School of the CRPF at Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh. This comes after Union Home Ministry had decided to initiate a probe into Rai’s allegations, the report says.

In the village where a farmer’s family had said that the two suspects were sleeping in their home when they were taken away by soldiers on the night of March 29, according to IE report.

Rai had submitted a 13-page report. In the report, he had claimed that information about the incident and FIR filed by the joint squad of forces presented a fictitious account of the operation to conceal pre-planned murders of two persons in custody and present it as some brave act or professional achievement.

The home ministry had acknowledged receiving the report and said it is being studied and action on its content will be taken soon, according to PTI report. Advisor to the Home Ministry Ashok Prasad had said that the letter was with the CRPF DG and he was examining it.

Shillong, Jun 14 (PTI): Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma Wednesday directed the police to have a ‘deeper’ probe into the possible nexus between banned militant outfit Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) and the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) which was opposing railway projects in the state. “Since there is a claim, police are on the job to go deeper into this and find out if there is anything (nexus),” Sangma told reporters after chairing the meeting of the State Security Commission (SSC) held here.

Asked whether the government would invite the anti-railway group for dialouge, the chief minister said, “We will have talks and discussion as and when required. But let them stop all the criminal and unlawful activities and demonstrate maturity and responsibility.... Government has to talk to people who demonstrate responsibility.” Stating that the incidents of arson was a matter of concern, he said that the government did not expect the KSU to behave like a ‘rouge’ organization.

Agartala, Jun 14 (PTI): The ruling CPI(M) in Tripura today alleged that the BJP is in league with a tribal party and an underground insurgent outfit, and has hatched a conspiracy to defeat the Left Front in the state Assembly elections scheduled for early next year.

Addressing a press conference, CPI(M) state secretary Bijan Dhar, said BJP is trying to use the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT), a tribal party which champions the demand for separate state, and an insurgent outfit, the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT), to defeat the Left Front government and foment communal tension between tribals and non-tribals.

The IPFT has called for an indefinite blockade of the Assam-Agartala national highway from

July 10 unless its demand for a separate state is conceded.

“The United Naga Council, a front of the NSCN(IM), had blocked roads in Manipur’s Naga dominated areas to create crisis in that state and to fish in the muddled waters,” Dhar said alleging the blockade call by IPFT is supported by NLFT. He also alleged that the BJP is clandestinely supporting the demand and has not opposed the highway blockade move.

IPFT representatives had met Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office Jitendra Singh on May 17 and had submitted a memorandum demanding a separate state curving out the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), which constitute two third of the state territory.

Tripura tribal party to launch agitation for separate state

Agartala, Jun 14 (IANS): A tribal-based party in Tripura has stepped up efforts to push its demands -- including for a separate state -- even as the ruling CPI-M has warned that a Manipur-like conspiracy would not be tolerated in the Left-ruled state where elections are due early next year.

The tribal-based party Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT), which has been agitating for the creation of a separate state, announced on Wednesday that it would block National Highway-8 and the rail tracks for an indefinite period from July 10.

NH-8 maintains the surface connection between the land-locked state and the rest of India through Assam.

“In support of our demand, we would block the National Highway and railway for indefinite period

from July 10. A rally would also be organised in Agartala on the same issue on August 23,” IPFT President Narendra Chandra Debbarma told reporters here.

He said: “We had a meeting with Minister of State in Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) Jitendra Singh on May 17 in New Delhi and discussed our demands.

The Minister told us that the government would consider our demands.”

Singh is also Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Development of North-Eastern Region (DoNER).

The IPFT for the past few years has been agitating for the creation of a separate state, carved out by upgrading the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) area.

The TTAADC was formed in 1987 under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution to protect and safeguard

the political, economic and cultural interests of the tribals.

The politically-important council constitutes twothirds of Tripura’s 10,491 sq.km. area and 1,216,465 (mostly tribals) of the state’s total 37 lakh population reside in the areas.

The IPFT’s demand for a separate state becomes a main issue in the Left-ruled Tripura before the assembly elections, due in February next year.

Most of the political parties, including the ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), have rejected the demands saying that the issue would create ethnic trouble in the peaceful state.

CPI-M State Secretary Bijan Dhar said: “Months before the Manipur assembly elections, (the) BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) instigated the Naga group to block the state’s vital

Morigaon, Jun 14 (PTI): Hundreds of workers and employees under the banner of Hindustan Paper Corporation (HPC) Workers’ Union blocked National Highway 37 at Jagiroad in central Assam protesting the closure of Jagiroad and Cachar paper mills.

Both mills were under the Union Heavy Industry Ministry. Production at both the paper mills came to a halt in April this year causing job loss to more than 1,000 workers and employees directly and 2,000 families indirectly, the protesters claimed. HPC Workers’ Union secretary Ananda Bordoloi alleged “due to Centre’s apathy and conspiracy of some

bureaucrats, the head office of HPC was not transferred to Assam from Kolkata.

Though the Jagiroad Paper Mill earlier registered profit, the situation changed due mismanagement and corruption.”

“Though the BJP led state government said the mill will be made operational soon, there is no signal yet from the Centre,” he said.

A package of Rs 3,000 crore required to start both mills has been opposed by the Union Heavy Industry Ministry, even though Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had recently declared that the paper mills will be revitalised, Bordoloi said.

Abnormal weather

D

ue to human interference with the environment through emissions of chemicals and pollutants, the changes are being witnessed through changing climatic winds, oceanic currents and rising heat and humidity. Recently, the north east experienced one of the heaviest thunderstorms and followed by torrential rains that caused floods, landslides and deaths. When the term ‘global warming’ is used, it is meant to describe the impact of rise in global temperature in decades brought about by the emission of green house gases caused by fossil fuel emissions, pollutants and other human activities. The cycle of rising temperature has interfered with the natural weather cycle. This often results in unprecedented heavy rains or untimely arrival of the rains. However, when climatologists speak of changing weather pattern and its resultant effect in throwing nature’s weather out of gear; it means that the nature is not longer in control and therefore out of control. These affect the natural laboratory required for agriculture and which has been witnessed throughout India in the recent years. As per records, in 2014, the top carbon dioxide (CO2) emitters were China(30%), the United States(15%), the European Union(9%), India(7%), the Russian Federation(5%), and Japan(4%). These data include CO2 emissions from fossil fuel combustion, as well as cement manufacturing and gas flaring. Together, these sources represent a large proportion of total global CO2 emissions. Future effects of climate change will continue through this century and beyond during which temperatures will continue to rise. This will mean that frost-free season (and growing season) will lengthen, more droughts and heat waves, hurricanes will become stronger and more intense and that sea level will rise 1-4 feet by 2100. The local destruction of the local environment has also added to the changes in climate. According to environmentalists, there can be no compensation for the loss of natural forests because open forests are often classified as degraded. A dense or closed forest, as it is known in scientific terms, is characteristic of that area and climatic conditions.When a natural forest is felled what is lost is the ecological system, including rare species of flora and fauna. What replaces it is a monoculture plantation of fast-growing species. One of the most destructive symbols on the environment has been the total loss of the once lush Rangapahar reserved forest which was declared as a sanctuary. This newspaper had exposed the nexus that had systematically destroyed the forest since 1990. At the height of its prime, Rangapahar Sanctuary had 21,768 acres when it was notified as a reserved forest in 1925 by the forest department of Assam. Today, what is left of the sanctuary is about hardly 300 acres that is supposed to be the Nagaland Zoological Park. The contributory factors for abnormal weather patterns are varied and many.

It is therefore important to make citizens aware of their roles and once this is achieved, perhaps even choice of environmental friendly products would become a necessity. No government in the state should overlook the role of sustainable development while pursuing economic growth. Ignoring this matter would only create an unfavourable climate literally and geographically and disturb the need to maintain equitable and healthy rates of growth.

It does not matter what my circumstances are. I can be as much assured of abiding in Jesus in any one of them as I am in any prayer meeting. It is unnecessary to change and arrange my circumstances myself. Our Lord’s inner abiding was pure and unblemished. He was at home with God wherever His body was. He never chose His own circumstances, but was meek, submitting to His Father’s plans and directions for Him. Just think of how amazingly relaxed our Lord’s life was! But we tend to keep God at a fever pitch in our lives. We have none of the serenity of the life which is “hidden with Christ in God” (Colossians 3:3).

Think of the things that take you out of the position of abiding in Christ. You say, “Yes, Lord, just a minute— I still have this to do. Yes, I will abide as soon as this is finished, or as soon as this week is over. It will be all right, Lord. I will abide then.” Get moving— begin to abide now. In the initial stages it will be a continual effort to abide, but as you continue, it will become so much a part of your life that you will abide in Him without any conscious effort.

Make the determination to abide in Jesus wherever you are now or wherever you may be placed in the future.

he Central Bureau of Investigation’s raid on the owners of NDTV for an alleged concealment of share transaction from the SEBI that has caused a loss of Rs. 48 crore to a private bank has been termed by the channel as a witch-hunt based on “same old” false accusation. I tend to agree with the channel.

Radhika Roy, the co-owner, and I have worked together at The Indian Express and I cannot imagine that she could have indulged in such activities attributed to her.

I think it is a trumped up charge.

Radhika and her husband, Pronnoy Roy, are not that type because they are self-made people. They may have committed some technical errors.

But the CBI has registered a case against RRPR Holding Private Limited, Pranoy Roy, his wife Radhika and unidentified officials of ICICI Bank of criminal conspiracy, cheating and corruption.

According to charges, the RRPR Holdings had allegedly taken a loan of Rs 500 crore from India Bulls Private Limited to purchase 20 per cent shares of NDTV from the public.

A trumped up charge

The CBI has alleged that RRPR Holdings took a loan of Rs 375 crore at the rate of 19 per cent per annum from ICICI Bank to repay the borrowing from India Bulls.

The promoters of NDTV pledged their entire shareholding in NDTV as collateral to ICICI for this loan, it is alleged. According to the investigating agency, this pledging of shares was not reported to the SEBI, stock exchanges and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

Such concealment was allegedly done as a creation of more than 61 per cent voting capital which was in violation of section 19 (2) of the Banking Regulation Act. It should not be more than 30 per cent, the agency said. An interest waiver of 10 per cent was also given

by ICICI. The network has said that the loans have been repaid and it produced a document that appeared to confirm its claim.

clearly the independence and fearlessness of NDTV’s team that the ruling party’s politicians cannot stomach and the CBI raid is merely another attempt at silencing the media.”

The Narendra Modi government has been after the NDTV for quite some time because this is one of the very few channels which have not surrendered to the whims of the government. And this is not the first Kuldip time that it has been targeted by the Modi government.

Last year, NDTV had to challenge the government’s one-day ban of its Hindi channel in the Supreme Court when it was ordered off the air for broadcasting sensitive details of terror attack on the air force base in Pathankot in January 2016. In November 2016, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting had ordered an unprecedented 24-hour blackout against the network, saying its coverage on terrorist attacks at Pathankot had revealed “strategically-sensitive information.” NDTV argued that its coverage was based on official news briefings

and that other broadcasters that had made the same revelations were not being penalized.

Subsequently, the representatives of NDTV met with the Information and Broadcasting Minister and pleaded that the channel had not been given a fair chance to offer evidence that it did not share any information that was different from what other channels and newspapers presented at the same Nayar time.

Understandably, the ban was widel condemned by journalists and editors with all press councils drawing parallels to the Emergency of the 1970s when basic constitutional rights including the freedom of the press were blatantly violated. At the last minute, the government lifted the ban.

The Editors’ Guild of India then said that the oneday ban by the government was unprecedented and that the centre appeared to have given itself the power “to intervene in the functioning of the media and take arbitrary punitive action as and when it does not agree with the coverage.”

Defending the ban,

Information and Broadcasting Minister Venkaiah Naidu said that it was “in the interest of the country’s security” and that the barrage of criticism confronted by the government appeared to be “politically inspired.”

Even on the recent raids by CBI, Naidu’s reaction is, more or less, the same. Denying that there was no political interference on the raids, Naidu has said: “If somebody does something wrong, simply because they belong to media, you cannot expect the government to keep quiet.”

He said that the law was taking its course. I am not against the law taking its own course. But I, like other journalists, would want to know what the channel has done to invite the wrath of the government or, for that matter, Prime Minister Modi.

It is obvious that this action could not have been taken without the consent from the top. The Information and Broadcasting Minister is only the hatchet person. After all, he would have to carry out the orders coming from above.

Undermine no more the young Nagas

urprised not us but since we have to justify our stand, here are some logical reasons as to why ‘youth empowerment’ should not be discouraged in the Naga society as it is hinted and favored by some older Naga leaders and writers for the youths to remain a silent spectator and follow only in their footsteps when we ourselves grow our share of grey hairs.

In the western society the justice through law is not reserved only for some particular section of the people in the society.

The law does not hold any preference based on class or age, sex of an individual to justify his place in the society.

A paparazzi (photographer) can sue a famous celebrity or a janitor could file a law suit against a senator, should the charges pressed against the accused is entirely based on facts and seek justice.

They don’t believe that it merely takes the number in age for an individual to attain the level of wisdom to change the society for the better. No not them, they are smart enough to comprehend (through comprehensive studies and research in psychology and neurobiology) that it takes some to attain great age to finally reach certain level of social and mental maturity while there are charismatic some whose mental maturity enlightens at a young age.

It depends and varies from one person to the next. For this reason they don’t discourage but encourages and provide the necessary platforms to their youths to inspire and influence their society for change. Even Bill Gates, the world’s richest man was only 16 years old when he developed first his software that later led to the expansion of Microsoft.

The young Nagas of today are more equipped with information about the western society and their developments thanks to western TV cable and spending times on the internet and social network sites which the older generations did not have access to during their development into adulthood.

The bitter truth is that the modern minded Nagas (be it young or old) are more mentally civilized and psychologically advanced than the set of Nagas who still clings to the past and its former glories.

For those who can’t seem to grasp this simple reality then we can’t make them understand any further.

Yes, the guidance and encouragement (positive reinforcement) of the few wise intellectual older Nagas is much needed in our society to direct the youths in building a bright future for our society channeled with the harnessing of the potential of the intellectual capacity of the young Nagas. In order to change a system we have to be a

little bit radical in our approaches with not money or muscles as our weapon but “Truth”.

Today we have observed and understood the nature of the “system beyond system” where we all dwell in, from corruption to ignorance that has bounded the people from the “freedom to live” rather than surviving. If we want to bring total development in our society then the first obstacle we need to overcome is the present ignorant system that has its reach through every aspect in our lives.

If we check the facts then the truth is only that the older generations when they were young had been under a brutally ignorant system because of lack of western culture influence in those days.

The Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Dimapur, Kesonyu Yhome in his speech that appeared in the daily papers on March 30, 2017 challenged the youths to overcome narrow mindedness and broaden their potential by not remaining as mere spectators.

He also talked about how most revolutions in history had been brought out by youth forces. Kurt Cobain also said that it was up to the youths to bring positive changes in the society because as humans grows old they become fairly adjustable with the system where they have lived for long and doesn’t have the zest

to change the total set of perspectives in their lives which is basic psychology.

So it is up to the enthusiastic youths to utilize their modern knowledge and perspectives in shaping a new advanced society.

Ever y citizen has the right of freedom of speech and expression but this does not give the right to any individual or group to tarnish the name of any individual or an organization with false propaganda. If any accusation is to be made like, “the young minds which are capable enough to change the world is now gradually manipulated by the power of money.

Indeed money and political power has become their top most priority” than make sure to produce the evidence to support the statements regarding the motives because your word will hold against you should one choose to sue you on charges for “false allegations” in court.

If not today, when are we Nagas planning to bring a practical systematic exchange of human interaction in our society based on mutual understanding and respect of human rights where every issue would be addressed on rational grounds as done in the Western Societies and not on vague customary obligations?

Chained by a forced language!

Many animals and even plant species communicate with each other. Humans are not unique in this capability. However, human language is unique in being a symbolic communication system that is learned instead of being biologically inherited. We also use it to express inner thoughts and emotions. It is a medium through which we represent our culture and historical backgrounds of our community.

However, language known by one need not necessarily be known by all. Over years we have made it our ‘pride’ rather than our ‘medium’ and are chaining the people belonging to other linguistic minority communities of our regions with it. Same is happening in West-Bengal, where Bengali language is made compulsory irrespective of the opinions of the hill people. It is a crime on moral grounds as an individual in an Independent country like India should be free to learn and communicate in the language of his/her choice. No one has the right to force their mother tongue on others, as they also have their own vernacular languages to choose from and “Nepali” being one of them. It is also an insult to a great free-minded language like ‘Bengali’ as it is forced on ‘Non-Bengali’ speakers thereby arousing hatred and a sense of boredom on the young minds of the students.

I believe all languages are beautiful and all of them deserve their part of respect. But learning should be left out to the choice of the readers and no citizen of this country should be chained to any language. This is my humble suggestion as a concerned citizen of this great ‘multi-linguistic’ country India.

MP CM meets deceased farmers’ kin; hands out Rs 1 crore aid each

New Delhi, Jun 14 (IANS): Equating the killing of five Madhya Pradesh farmers with Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination, the Congress on Wednesday flayed BJP chief Amit Shah’s comment on the Father of the Nation and said the BJP was trying to “deconstruct” his image, ideology and thinking.

The Congress said it will launch on Thursday a ‘haq-mango abhiyaan’ (fightfor-rights movement) for farmers in Uttar Pradesh.

“A few days ago in Raipur, a man used a very light word. They are those who want to deconstruct the image, ideology, and thinking of Mahatma Gandhi,” Congress leader Raj Babbar told reporters here.

On June 9, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Amit Shah had referred to Mahatma Gandhi as a “bahut chatur baniya” (very clever Baniya) while addressing a gathering in Raipur in Chhattisgarh.

“Farmers fighting for their rights are being shot, in the same manner in which Gandhi-ji was assassinated in 1948,” Babbar said while referring to the June 6 killing of farmers in Mandsaur district.

Babbar said: “They fear if the thinking and ideology of Gandhi-ji remains alive, their divisive politics will not work in India till then and they will have to work very hard to spread that kind of politics.”

Babbar, who heads the Congress’s Uttar Pradesh unit, said Indians had adopted the ideology of Bapu (Mahatma Gandhi) and rejected the ideology of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh ideologue (Madhav Sadashiv) Golwalkar.

The Congress leader said the BJP leaders must remember that Gandhi-ji sacrified and renounced everything for the Chamaparan Satyagrah in Bihar (in 1917).

(PTI): In an apparent goofup, the home ministry in its annual report used a picture of Spain-Morocco boundary as India’s border with Pakistan, prompting the Union home secretary to say that the ministry would apologise if there is a mistake.

The picture with the caption ‘Floodlighting along the Border’ was published recently in the home ministry’s annual report for 2016-17, with detailed information on floodlighting along the Indo-Pak border.

However, it came to light today that the picture was of the Spain-Morocco border, located along the Plazas de soberanía, Ceuta, Melilla and Alborán Island

Morocco.

Between Morocco and Ceuta, there is a physical border known as the Ceuta border fence. Melilla also has a physical border known as the Melilla border fence, similar to the Indo-Pak border with floodlighting. Union Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi said the ministry will find out if the picture was not that of Indo-Pak border.

“If there is a mistake, we will apologise,” he said.

Sources said the home ministry officials were trying to find out from where the picture was sourced. It could be from the Border Security Force which guards major portions of the 3,323 km long boundary, they said.

M u mb a i , J u n 1 4 (AGENCIES): The ED today filed its first charge sheet against liquor baron Vijay Mallya and others in connection with its money laundering probe in the IDBI-KFA bank loan case.

The 57-page charge sheet or prosecution complaint, with voluminous annexures, was filed under various sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) before a special anti-money laundering court here.

The Enforcement Directorate had registered a criminal case in this deal last year under the PMLA and has attached assets worth

the role of other officials and executives of KFA and IDBI in this deal and has appended their statements recorded by the agency under the PMLA law.

The investigations conducted by the ED so far had stated that its probe found that the Kingfisher Airlines (KFA) along with IDBI bank officials “criminally conspired to obtain funds to the tune of Rs. 860.92 crore despite weak financials, negative net-worth, noncompliance of corporate credit policy of new client, non-quality collateral security and low credit rating of the borrower, out of which Rs. 807.82 crore of principal amount remains unpaid.”

Mandsaur (MP), Jun 14 (PTI): Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan today visited Mandsaur, where five farmers were allegedly killed in police firing during a protest, and handed over Rs 1 crore each as aid to the kin of the deceased.

Chouhan, along with wife Sadhna, reached Mandsaur on a special plane and first went to Badwan village to meet the kin of Ghanshyam Dhakad, who was killed in police firing.

Chouhan handed over the documents related to the compensation to the kin of the farmers. The compensation amount was directly transferred to their bank accounts.

The BJP leader is also slated to visit Piplyamandi, Barkheda Panth, Budha and Chillod Piplia villages to offer condolences to the kin of the other farmers killed in the recent violence in the state.

The district administration made elaborate security arrangements for the chief minister’s visit. Five helipads were kept ready at various places, said a senior official.

MUMBAI, Jun 14 (Agencies): The Reserve Bank of India has identified 12 borrowers, which account for 25% of all bank bad loans, for immediate resolution under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC).

The RBI will now ask banks to file for insolvency proceedings under the IBC in respect to the identified accounts, which will be accorded priority by the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT).

The top 25 accounts were identified by an RBIconstituted panel comprising independent board members.

Although the central bank has not divulged the names of the borrowers, banking sources expect that it would include top defaulting companies such as Bhushan Steel, Bhushan Power and Jaypee group.

8 killed, 30 injured as bus falls from bridge in UP JAUN P UR , JUN 1 4 (AGENCIES): At least eight people, including a woman, were killed and 30 injured when an Uttar Pradesh roadways bus fell on the bank of Sai river from a bridge.

The incident took place at Bargudar Pul area under Sikrara police station at around 1.30pm on the Jaunpur-Rae Bareli national highway, district magistrate of Jaunpur Sarvagyaram Mishra said. “The UPSRTC bus was going to Jaunpur from Allahabad. At around 1.30pm, the driver lost control over the vehicle which hurtled down the bridge and fell on the bank of the river,” he said. Mishra said eight passengers, including a woman, lost their lives and 30 were injured. Two of the seriously injured passengers have been referred to Varanasi for treatment, he said, adding that other wounded passengers were undergoing treatment at a local hospital.

NEW DELHI, JUN 14 (AGENCIES): The process of filing nominations for the July 17 Presidential poll began on Wednesday with the Election Commission issuing a notification in this regard. The nomination process will continue till June 28.

The ruling NDA and a loosely knit group of opposition parties have intensified efforts to zero in on a “mutually acceptable” presidential candidate. But they would go their separate ways if a consensus proves elusive.

After a prolonged silence on the issue, BJP chief Amit Shah has constituted a three-member committee comprising Union ministers Rajnath Singh, Arun Jaitley and M Venkaiah Naidu which will hold consultations with the NDA allies and the opposition on the issue. Leaders of opposition parties will hold their meeting this afternoon to chalk

out their joint strategy and come up with a consensus candidate. The 10-member sub-group of the opposition is meeting for the first time after its constitution recently. Sources said the opposition leaders will try and come out with some possible names for the post of president, but will await the government initiative in this regard. In a bid to ensure that non serious candidates do not file nomination for the prestigious election, laws were amended a few years ago. Now, a candidate who is supported by 50 ‘electors’ and seconded by another 50 can file nomination. Elected members of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha and elected members of state legislative assemblies are the electors. If the elections are held in case both the NDA and the opposition field their candidates, then the results will be announced on July 20.

New Delhi, Jun 14 (IANS): The ruling and the opposition parties on Wednesday got going on the presidential election with the three-member BJP committee poised to meet Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Friday in a bid to evolve a consensus on the nominee. On the other side, opposition leaders held preliminary discussions on the issue but decided to meet again for detailed parleys after government makes public its choice of candidate.

The BJP core committee met on Wednesday morning in the presence of party President Amit Shah, where senior ministers Rajnath Singh and M. Venkaiah Naidu, who form part of the three-member group were also present. Later, Singh and Naidu met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and discussed the strategy.

Later it was disclosed that the three-member team, which includes Arun Jaitley, will meet Sonia Gandhi probably with the name the ruling side would like to field as part of efforts to build a consensus. It was not clear whether Jaitley, who is currently in South Korea, will be back in the capital in time for the meeting.

A surprise could be in the form of Jharkhand Governor Draupadi Murmu, a tribal from Odisha.

With an edge in the

electoral college, the BJP is said to be of the opinion that it should have its own candidate who has an ideological background since it is the party in power. Naidu indicated as much on Tuesday when he said that opposition should keep in mind the spirit of democracy that the BJP has the mandate of the people.

Meanwhile, BJP’s oldest ally Shiv Sena on Wednesday yet again made it clear that its “first choice” for NDA’s presidential candidate is RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat.

The Sena has been demanding that RSS chief should be nominated as the NDA’s presidentail candidate, even though Bhagwat has said that he is not in the race.

Scindia on 72-hour ‘satyagraha’ in farmers’ support Bhopal, Jun 14 (PTI): Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia today launched a 72-hour ‘satyagraha’ here in support of farmers, three days after Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan called off his indefinite fast on the issue.

Scindia, the Congress’ Chief Whip in the Lok Sabha, launched the protest at around 3.30 pm at TT Nagar’s Dussehra Maidan.

The scion of the erstwhile Gwalior dynasty garlanded the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi on the stage before sitting on the ‘satyagraha’.

The photos of the six farmers killed in Mandsaur district earlier this month were also displayed on the stage.

The farmers’ protest, which began on June 1 over various demands, including loan waiver and better prices for their produce, took a violent turn on June 6, when five of them were allegedly killed in police

firing at Mandsaur. Another farmer from the district, who was allegedly beaten up by the police, succumbed to his injuries later.

The protest spread to the other districts of western Madhya Pradesh subseq u e n t l y, i n c l u d i n g Neemuch, Dhar, Ratlam and Jhabua.

The farmers’ agitation prompted the opposition parties to launch an attack on the BJP government in the state and corner Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan over the issue.

An under pressure Chouhan had launched an indefinite fast here on Saturday with an appeal for peace, but called it off the next day claiming that peace had been restored in the areas affected due to the farmers’ protest.

“The Gorkhaland movement is a fight for the upliftment of our community. The other demands may be fulfilled later, but for us the freedom of the community comes first.

Accusing the state police of acting like ruling Trinamool Congress cadres, he gave them a stern warning not to resort to “undemocratic means” to contain their movement.

Out of 33 SHGs in Diphupar village, 30 SHGs came together and participated in the cleanliness drive. The SHGs divided themselves into four groups namely Ruth, Sara, Mariam and Hannah. Their target was to achieve a model village in the near future by organising different activities under the four divided groups.

BANGKOK, JUN 14 (IANS): The siblings of Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Wednesday accused him of abusing his position and said they had lost confidence in him as head of the city-state.

Lee Wei Ling and Lee Hsien Yang said in a statement published on their Facebook accounts that they felt “threatened” by their older brother’s “misuse of his position and influence over the Singaporean government and its agencies to drive his personal agenda”, reports Efe news.

They added that they feared “the use of the organs of state against us”

and that Hsien Yang felt compelled to leave the country.

The siblings also accused Hsien Loong’s wife Ho Ching of meddling in gover nment affairs, promoting their son Li Hongyi’s political career and expressed concern over the country’s lack of measures to prevent the abuse of power.

In the six-page letter, the two siblings also criticized the Prime Minister’s refusal to follow the terms of the will of their father Lee Kuan Yew, the founder of modern Singapore who died in 2015, regarding his private residence.

Kuan Yew said in his

will that he wished the house to be demolished, but Wei Ling and Hsien Yang accused Hsien Loong of using his position to disregard his father’s last wishes in an attempt to “milk” his legacy to boost his popularity.

people with jobs or businesses based in opposing states and students studying abroad would likely be “badly affected”.

“I am also extremely troubled to hear that the UAE and Bahrain are threatening to jail and fine people who express sympathy for Qatar or opposition to their own governments’ actions,” he said. This, he warned, “would appear to be a clear violation of the right to freedom of expression or opinion.”

BEIRUT, JUN 14 (AGENCIES): The Lebanese Cabinet approved a new elections law and referred it to parliament for ratification, paving the way for parliamentary elections postponed twice over the past year.

Lebanese politicians have been holding meetings for months to draft a new elections law. The new draft law was finally backed this week by Lebanon’s main Christian and Muslim groups.

Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri called for a meeting to ratify the new law on Friday, and it is expected to pass easily since the largest political blocs took part in the drafting process.

During Wednesday’s meeting that approved the new draft, the term of the current parliament was extended 11 months until May 6, 2018 when the vote is scheduled.

The new law will be based on proportional representation and divides Lebanon to 15 electoral districts. Parliament seats remain equally divided between Muslims and Chris-

Politicians did not agree on setting a quota for women in parliament and also did not agree on a proposal to lower the voting age to 18 years from 21. But for the first time ever, six of the 128 parliamentary seats will be given to Lebanese expatriates.

The current parliament was elected to a four-year term in 2009, but its tenure has been extended twice over security concerns and the civil war in neighboring Syria that spilled into Lebanon on several occasions.

“What we achieved today with this election law

is a historical achievement because I believe that we used to have election laws brought in from outside.

This time for the first time the Lebanese sat together” and drafted it, Prime Minister Saad Hariri said during a news conference after the meeting.

Hariri was apparently referring to the time when Syria dominated Lebanon and directly controlled its politics. Syria withdrew its troops from Lebanon in 2005 after a wave of protests following the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, the father of the current premier.

Bangladesh landslides death toll reaches 146

DHAKA, JUN 14 (PTI): Bangladesh today stepped up search and rescue operations as the death toll in one of the worst landslides to hit the country triggered by torrential rains climbed to 146, with most of the causalities reported from a remote hill district close to the Indian border.

The southeastern Rangmathi hill district, which borders Mizoram and Tripura, was the worst hit with at least 20 landslides hitting it. The district alone saw 105 deaths, including four army personnel who were engaged in rescue operations.

Bandarban and Chittagong were the other two affected districts.

According to the officials, the death toll will rise further as many are still missing under tonnes of debris in southeaster n hills.

Though officials confirmed only 129 deaths but media reports put the toll as high as 146 in nearly three days’ of torrential rains due to a depression in the Bay of Bengal which have triggered a series of landslides since Monday in the three districts.

At least 105 people were reported dead in Rangamati alone. Several army officers and soldiers

are among the victims, Dhaka Tribune reported.

According to an official at the Disaster Management Ministry some 4,000 people were moved to 18 government shelters as the landslides ravaged their homes and were exposed to the danger of getting buried in fresh mudslides.

Officials feared that the death toll could rise as rescuers find it difficult to reach remote areas where telephone and transport links have remained cut.

Local people said a landslide pushed 15 army men down to around 30 feet, killing four instantly while a military spokesman in Dhaka said an army major and a captain were among four of their dead personnel.

The officials said the troops were called out to clear the landslide rubble from a highway linking port city of Chittagong with Rangamati.

“A fresh landslide at the scene buried the detachment killing the four while one soldier is still missing. Ten personnel were wounded in the (fresh) landslide,” he said.

Authorities temporarily halted the rescue campaign at around 10 last night after recovering 129

bodies. Specialised teams of fire servicemen and troops were mobilised to launch afresh the salvage drive.

“We need to accomplish a crucial task of resuming Chittagong’s road communications with Bandarban and Rangamati and Bandarban alongside salvaging the landslide victims,” a Disaster Management official told reporters.

but this year’s rain is the worst since 2007 when landslides killed 127 people in the port city.

The incessant rains caused water-logging in many parts of Chittagong and submerged a number of coastal villages apart from triggering the landslides.

“The situation forced us to demolish a protection embankment against tidal surges as it appeared to be obstructing drainage inundating homes and roads,” an official of the city corporation said.

ST. PETERSBURG, JUN 14 (AGENCIES): An organization that monitors political repression in Russia says at least 26 people in Russia’s second-largest city have been sentenced to jail terms for participating in an anti-government protest.

Tens of thousands took to the streets across Russia’s 11 time zones on Monday to protest government corruption. Some of the protests, like in Moscow and St. Petersburg, were explicitly banned by authorities and nearly 2,000 people were detained although not yet sentenced.

The crackdown on the protesters appeared to be the toughest in St. Petersburg. Scalise, 51, is said to be in stable condition, his aides said.

ccording to EonMusic, Steve Vai and Devin Townsend will reunite on stage for the first time in almost a quarter century at the Starmus Festival IV: Life And The Universe, set to take place June 18-23 in in Trondheim, Norway.

Vai and Townsend originally teamed up in 1993 for Steve’s “Sex & Religion” album, which was released under the band name VAI. The disc saw the guitarist joining forces with a band of “monster musicians” — including drummer Terry Bozzio and bassist T.M. Stevens — to create an effort that was radically different from 1990’s “Passion And Warfare”. The band split up after the album was finished, and Vai subsequently toured K

Speaking at the Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards, which took place Monday night (June 12) in London, Devin said about his upcoming collaboration with Vai: “We’re doing one of my songs with an orchestra, and I’m singing with him for the first time in twentyfive years. I’m also playing some of his stuff.

More than a decade after their initial musical partnership, these two creative giants again crossed paths.

In 2005, Vai played a guest guitar solo on Townsend’s “Synchestra” album, and in 2013, was cast as narrator on Townsend’s “The Retinal Circus” live album.

Ariana Grande to get honorary citizenship of Manchester

riana Grande is to get honorary citizenship of Manchester under plans put forward by the city council.

The council is proposing a new system to recognise outstanding contributions to the city.

The US singer is in line to be the first recipient for organising the One Love Manchester concert in aid of victims of the bomb attack at her gig, in which 22 people died.

An event to mark “selfless acts” after the blast is to be held, too.

Under the proposals for the new scheme, honorary citizenship of Manchester could be granted to those from outside Greater Manchester.

Council leader Sir Richard Leese, said many people would already consider Grande to be “an honorary Mancunian”.

He said: “This seems a fitting moment to update the way we recognise those who make noteworthy contributions to the life and success of our city.

“We’ve all had cause to be incredibly proud of Manchester and the resilient and compassionate way in which the city, and all those associated with it, have responded to the terrible events of 22 May - with love and courage rather than hatred and fear.”

He said Ariana Grande had “exemplified this response”.

Some 50,000 people went to the One Love Manchester concert at Old Trafford on 4 June, which raised almost £3m for victims of the Manchester Arena attack.

Salman Abedi, 22, detonated a home-made bomb in the arena’s foyer at the end of Ariana Grande’s concert.

Manchester City Council has also announced it would hold an event later this year to recognise the “great many selfless acts and demonstrations of community spirit in the aftermath of the atrocity”.

The authority said there was a need for a new system of honours in addition to the rarely-awarded freedom of the city, which will remain the highest honour the city can give.

The freedom of the city has only been awarded four times this century.

The plans will go before the council on 12 July.

avid Bowie, John Peel, John Lennon and Paul McCartney are among many music stars honoured with blue plaques for BBC Music Day. BBC Music Day takes place on Thursday (June 15). To mark the occasion, the BBC’s local radio stations have unveiled 47 blues plaques across the country, signifying “locations that played a major role in our musical heritage”.

Bowie receives two plaques in total, one in Soho in London to mark where the artist recorded his albums ‘Hunky Dory’ and ‘The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust’ and one

in Kent to mark the formation of his early band The Manish Boys. Bowie’s backing band, the Spiders from Mars, meanwhile get a blue plaque in Hull.

John Lennon and Paul McCartney will be honoured with a blue plaque at the venue that they played their only gig as a duo,

billed as The Nerk Twins, at the Fox and Hounds in Caversham, Berkshire.

ob Dylan may have plagiarised his Nobel Prize lecture from SparkNotes, an online version of CliffsNotes, it has been claimed.

Slate Magazine uncovered similarities between the site’s entry on Moby-Dick and Dylan’s speech, in which he discussed the three books that had the biggest impact on his career.

The investigation was prompted by the discovery that the musician had quoted a passage which does not appear in any current editions of Herman Melville’s novel.

Dylan quoted a Quaker priest who, in the aftermath of a storm at sea, tells another character: “Some men who receive injuries are led to God, others are led to bitterness.”

Writer Ben Greenman observed the line did not appear in Melville’s novel, suggesting Dylan may have misremembered the book.

However, Slate discovered that SparkNotes used similar phrasing, describing the preacher as

Cardiff, Jun 14 (IANS): Pakistan cruised to the ICC Champions Trophy final after thrashing hosts England by eight wickets in the first semi-final at the Sophia Gardens here on Wednesday.

Chasing a below-par 212, the Green Brigade rode on a brilliant 118-run opening stand between Azhar Ali (76) and Fakhar Zaman (57) before Babar Azam (38 not out) and Ali helped the team with a 55-run second-wicket stand to set their date with the winner of the second semi-final between India and Bangladesh, on Sunday.

out for 211, thanks to pacer Hasan Ali’s 3/35, the Pakistani opening duo of Ali and Zaman made light work of the English bowlers as the visitors crossed the 50-run mark at the end of the mandatory powerplay.

The 27-year-old Zaman was the more destructive of the two, bringing up his second consecutive fifty off 49 balls, laced with six boundaries and a six off a bouncer from pacer Mark Wood in the very first over of the innings.

It seemed the Pakistan batsmen were in a hurry to get to the total as the duo

helped the team touch the three-figure mark in the next seven overs before Ali too got to his half century off 68 deliveries.

Unable to find the breakthrough, English skipper Eoin Morgan got Adil Rashid back into action, and the leg-spinner delivered on the very first delivery of his fourth over with the wicket of the dangerous Zaman, stumped by wicketkeeper Jos Buttler.

The wicket of Zaman brought in Azam, who wasted no time in settling down, dancing down the track to loft Rashid over for a straight

six as the visitors crossed the 150-run mark in no time.

Ali slowed down a bit midway till he picked Liam Plunkett for a boundary as the second wicket partnership flourished to 50 off 55 deliveries.

But a slower one from pacer Jake Ball saw the back of the opening batsman. Ali, who had by now faced 100 deliveries, only managed to get a bottom edge which crashed into his own stumps.

Needing 39 runs to win, the experienced Mohammed Hafeez (31 not out off 21 balls) and Azam finished off in style with a 42-run unbeaten third-wicket stand.

Hafeez, who started off clobbering all-rounder Ben Stokes for a massive six, got the winning runs with a boundary off the same bowler as Pakistan overhauled the target with 77 balls to spare.

Bengaluru, Jun 14 (IANS): India skipper Sunil Chhetri says he does not remember in his decade-long career the last time the team played such good football after they rode on his superb second-half strike to beat Kyrgyzstan in a 2019 AFC Asian Cup Group A qualifier here on Tuesday.

Delivering a brief speech, YRO & DSO K Libemo Jami lauded the initiative of BAK and encouraged the youngsters

to take up the game with seriousness as they would be trained by renowned State badminton coaches Tali and Sungit.

He said that the game of badminton was a wonder sport where Naga lads can explore to shine.

‘It can be taken up as career for many’, he added.

Libemo said that with the recent implementation of ‘Khelo India’, an initiative of the Ministry of Sports, government of India, many opportunities have been open for those who are sincere and dedicated.

Earlier, short speech was delivered by MDBA vice-president Tia Mollier and the preliminary instructions to the participants were announced by state badminton coach Tali Jamir.

Dembele scores late winner as France beat England Paris, Jun 14 (IANS): Ousmane Dembele helped France beat England 3-2 with a late winner in an international football friendly at the Stade de France here.

Tuesday night’s game was tied at 2-2 when the 20year-old Dembele scored off an assist by the 18-year-old sensation Kylian Mbappe in the 78th minute, reports Xinhua news agency.

France lost last weekend’s World Cup qualifiers 2-1 to Sweden due to a fatal error from their goalkeeper Hugo Lloris in the stoppage time. However, the head coach Didier Deschamps still kept Lloris as their skipper, also bringing in Mbappe, Dembele and Thomas Lemar into the attacking line-up.
