Battle of attrition begins on Prez election

NEW DELHI, JUN 16 (IANS/AGENCIES): A battle of attrition began on Friday with major opposition parties making it clear to the government that a consensus on the President’s election will not be possible without the ruling side giving the name of its candidate, a demand that was termed as “inappropriate”.

Sources said that the BJP-led NDA was likely to announce its candidate for the upcoming presidential elections on June 20. According to the reports, NDA will chair a meeting before June 20 to decide on the name of presidential candidacy. The nominee name will be announced with the general consent of allies.

The government formally began its outreach with the opposition on the presidential election with senior ministers Rajnath Singh and M. Venkaiah Naidu meeting Congress President Sonia Gandhi, but placed no name of its nominee.

Instead, the BJP team sought from the Congress leadership the name of the opposition candidate for the July 17 election. The opposition leaders were told that the government and the

BJP would like to finalise the candidate for the presidential poll before Prime Minister Narendra Modi leaves on a three-nation trip on June 24.

“The BJP leaders did not give any name to Congress President Sonia Gandhi but they wanted us to reveal the name of our candidate.

We were expecting them to disclose the name so that we can discuss it in our party and other opposition parties.

Since no names were given from the government side, there is no question of any discussion and cooperation,” Ghulam Nabi Azad, who was present at the meeting, told reporters later.

“They should give us the name and then seek cooperation,” he said. Singh and Naidu are part of the three-member team constituted by BJP president Amit Shah for discussion with political parties for the presidential polls.

The two-member team later met CPI-M General Secretary Sitaram Yechury, Prakash Karat and Brinda Karat to seek the party’s support. Yechury virtually echoed the views of the Congress leaders and expressed dismay over the government not suggesting a name.

“We had expected that they would suggest some name which we could have seriously considered. Unfortunately, they did not come forward with any name,” Yechury said, terming it a “public relations exercise” by the government.

IMPHAL, JUN 16: A tense situation gripped Ukhrul district headquarters after a 25 year old youth was reportedly killed in a firing incident by suspected NSCN cadres on an angry mob, on June 15, which tried to storm its Wung Tangkhul Region (WTR) office following the death of another 28 year old youth on June 14.

According to The Sangai Express, one Romeo Shally of Khamasom Khaijang Kho village was allegedly apprehended for

interrogation in connection with an alleged complaint of sexual assault on June 14.

On learning about the death of Romeo, a government employee, inside the Wung Tangkhul Region office, an emergency meeting was held at the locality of the victim.

Furious over the high handedness, the local populace of Khamasom village gathered together in front of the WTR office.

When the angry mob tried to storm the office, suspected cadres fired some rounds during which one

25 year old Chingripam Lungleng s/o Issac Lungleng of Khamasom village was killed on the spot.

According to reports, the dead body Chingripam was still lying at the WTR office as angry villagers refused to accept the body, demanding that the culprit(s) be brought out.

Police from Ukhrul district headquarters rushed to the area along with troops of Assam Rifles to take stock of the situation.

Police sources said that a case was registered and investigation initiated.

NSCN (I-M) expresses pain; says CIT to probe DIMAPUR, JUN 16 (NPN): NSCN (I-M) through its MIP on Friday expressed “shame and pain for the ongoing situation in Ukhrul as a result of custodial dead of rape accused Romeo Shally of Khamasom village early morning of June 15.”

MIP further said the situation got aggravated “when in a commotion, Chingripam from the same village was hit by a stray bullet while resorting to blank fire, while trying to disburse mob.”

MIP said that Chingripam succumbed to injuries while on the way to hospital.

DIMAPUR, JUN 16 (NPN): Reacting to a recent statement made by Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju that NSCN (K) cadres would be rehabilitated if they surrendered, the Konyak Union (KU) said it wondered as to how Rijiju could “settle the seven decade old Naga struggles through a so called ‘rehabilitation package’?”

In a press note, KU p r e s i d e n t , S. M a n l i p Konyak, and general secretary, M. Honang Konyak, said such “undermining expression of thought” would only create more confusion and further provocation.

KU opined that both Naypyidaw and New Delhi should sincerely understand the cultural, social, political and territorial sentiments and aspiration of the Nagas so as to culminate into a peaceful and early solution.

Konyak is from Tobu sub-division of Mon district in Nagaland. Majority of NSCN (K) are Indian Nagas and the remaining being from Myanmar. Indian agencies are aware of the fact that Konyak’s chances may be dampened by another top leader of the outfit,

it’s army chief Kumchop Pangmei, who is a Hemi Naga from Myanmar just like his late president.

India’s interest in the next head of NSCN (K) can be gauged by a tweet by BJP’s national general secretary Ram Madhav minutes after news of Khaplang’s death reached Indian media. The next day, Union minister home Kiren Rijiju made an appeal to all Indian Nagas in NSCN(K) to lay down arms and join the mainstream and promised to rehabilitate them if they abjure violence.

In 2001, the Centre had signed a bilateral ceasefire with Khaplang. After waiting in the wings for invitation for talks, Khaplang pulled out of the truce in 2015 as India kept the process on for his rivals, the NSCN (IM).

MDMS implementation not satisfactory: Yitachu

LONGLENG, JUN 16 (NPN): Minster of school education and SCERT, Yitachu on Friday asserted that implementation of Mid Day Meal Scheme (MDMS) in the state was not satisfactory and that change in the system was needed where everyone must assist and support.

He said this at the one-day sensitization programme on Implementation of Mid Day Meal Scheme (MDMS) under Longleng district at Longleng town as chief guest.

After going through various reports on the implementation of MDMS in the state, the minister admitted that there was also a success story and the achievement was based on how the resources were managed. He said Nagaland “actually is manageable state and if we are good in managing the given resources, then it can be a better state”.

Thanking the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) and Wokha District Disaster Management Authority (WDDMA) for conducting a successful training programme, the ADC also lauded the SDRF personnel for their professional conduct and their

ever-readiness for helping others in times of need. The trainees were also presented with certificates at the valedictory programme.

Speaking on behalf of the trainees, Nongnan Lotha, a trainee-volunteer from Etsutchukha Colony, Wokha town, assured that the trainees would go back to their respective wards, villages and spread awareness on disaster management and also train more people on the same.

The first day of the training programme was dedicated to theory and basic concepts of CFRs,

second day on search and rescue techniques, third day on first aid, fourth day on tests, both oral and written and the fifth day on interactions and presentations by the CFR teams.

The valedictory programme was chaired by EAC Wokha Vejoyo Swuro while DPA, NSDMA Mercy Kithan delivered vote of thanks.

UNDP supports on-going peace process DIMAPUR: United Naga Democratic Party (UNDP) has resolved and reiterated its support to the “on-going Naga peace process for immediate resolution of Naga Political Issue to bring peace and prosperity”.

United Naga Democratic Party stated that the party has also decided to participate in the forth coming general election in a fair and free manner and support the campaign launched by NBCC for clean election.

Meanwhile, United Naga Democratic Party has informed that it has reallocated its office from United Colony, Nagarjan to Purana Bazar near Police Point at the Indian Paying Guest House.

The new office was dedicated by Sangtam Baptist Church, Dimapur, Rev. Tsipisi followed by a general meeting wherein new office bearers were elected for the term 2017-2022.

The team would be led by Hotongse Sangtam as president, Dr.A.Imti Jamir as general secretary along with six other executives.

Condolences on S. S Khaplang’s death DIMAPUR: Angami Public Organisation (APO) in a condolence message has expressed profound grief and sorrow at the passing away of late S S Khaplang, a great Naga leader at a crucial time like the present.

APO said late Khaplang was not just the leader of a Naga national Political Group (NNPG) but was “much more than that”. It described late Khaplang as one of the tallest Naga National leaders whose commitment to “our” people was total. The organisation said it was not surprising that although his group (NSCN-K) has “fallen foul” of the government of India, the Naga people still has faith in him and kept visiting him by making efforts to bring him back to the ceasefire agreement and the negotiating table. In his demise, APO said “we must also recognize and thank him for his unique role in making the Nagas of Myanmar part of the larger modern story.”

As Nagas bid farewell to the great Naga leader, APO also reminded all Nagas that “reconciliation was the only way forward for our people. We also want to say that asking forgiveness is not a sign of weakness but a symbol of greatness and statesmanship in our Naga situation and perhaps the only way forward.”

LHKA: Lotha Hoho Karbi Anglong (LHKA) while mourning the death of late S.S.Khaplang described him as a leader who lived with a purpose he believed, a man of vision and wisdom, a great leader who sacrificed his life for the service of the nation.

LHKA extended heartfelt condolence to the bereaved family and prayed that almighty god grant solace in time of grief and loss.

Zhadima VDB repairs Kohima–Bokajan road

DIMAPUR: Village Development Board (VDB) of Zhadima village has reportedly undertaken road repairing work along Kohima- Bokajan NEC road via Zhadima 10th IRB (NAP) Battalion, Assam Rifles outpost Ziezou, Phekerkriema, Tsosunyu, Ghutovi, Niuland and Dimapur, the only alternate road between Kohima- Dimapur.

In a release, Zhadima village VDB secretary,

Roko Angami, blamed the state PWD department of neglecting this “most vital road” between Kohima and Dimapur for many years and added that the villagers were compelled to repair the road on regular basis on their own expenses.

He stated that the villagers were even planning to raise funds among themselves for repairing and maintenance related works

on the route for the general public.

The VDB secretary lamented that the PWD department was not attentive to the repeated requests of the villagers towards maintenance of this road.

He therefore urged upon the concerned department to take up the matter with urgency and ensure that Kohima- Bokajan NEC road was maintained to the fullest.

KOHIMA, JUN 16 (NPN): Adviser to chief minister labour employment and skill development Nagaland Dr. T.M. Lotha has asserted the need to protect the rights, equality, dignity and safety of the workers without any discrimination.

He was speaking as chief guest at “northeast domestic workers week regional conference on decent work for domestic workers� held from June 10-16 under the theme “domestic work is work, domestic workers are like other workers entitled to decent work�.

Dr. T.M Lotha lamented that people in Nagaland were unaware of various Acts for workers as the domestic workers were not duly registered and the also organisation was not well structured.

He pointed out that many Acts and resolutions have been passed in International Labour Organization (ILO) and UN bodies however lamented that domestic workers in India continue to struggle for visibility and recognition.

He said several legislations such as the unorganised social security act-2008, sexual harassment

against women at work place (Prevention, prohibition and redressal) Acts 2013 and minimum wages schedule notified in various states refer to domestic workers. Dr. Lotha however lamented that there was absence of comprehensive, uniformly applicable, national legislation that guarantees fair terms of employment and decent working conditions.

Stating that domestic workers should be guaranteed the same terms of employments as enjoyed by others, he reminded that domestic workers should be seen not just as helpers who are part of the family but as employed workers entitled to the rights.

Dr. Lotha asserted that there should be cordial atmosphere in the work place and cordial relationship between employer and employee with the view to collectively promote the decent work for domestic workers and to ultimately enhance the efficiency and economy of the family.

In his address, Dr. Neikiesalie (Nicky) Kire, MLA also expressed concern for the welfare of the domestic workers.

L. Nungshiyanger Aier, informed that Nagaland was one of the lowest minimum wage paying states in the country at Rs. 115 per day.

He said the department was working hard to increase the minimum wage and expressed hope that in the next revision the wage might be increased to Rs. 288 per day.

He informed that Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) Act was already implemented at Dimapur and soon it would implemented in Kohima and added that person whose pay or salary below Rs 21,000 are entitled to enrol under this scheme.

He also disclosed that in the random survey by the labour department, Kohima has around 5,000 child labour.

Sr. Margaret Sekhose said that the minimum wage for the domestic workers have been fixed for four Northeast states namely Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura and Mizoram under the category like unskilled, semiskilled skilled and highly skilled whereas Manipur and Nagaland states was yet to fix the same.

She said the 6 North East states have 10,403 domestic workers identified, where 7965 workers registered, domestic workers group formed 519, domestic workers’ children identified 7036 and domestic workers’ children identified 5859.

The programme was organized by Ferrando domestic workers’ Alliance (FDWA) and national domestic worker’s movement (NDWM) in collaboration with office of the labour commissioner Kohima, Nagaland state social welfare board Kohima, development association Nagaland, Japfß Christian college Kigwema, Don Bosco college Kohima and St. Joseph’s college Jakhama and attended by domestic workers, students, government officials, organizers members and others.

DIMAPUR, JUN 16 (NPN): ‘Smooth Ride for Dimapur’, an initiative of Act of Kindness, in collaboration with Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) was launched by Commissioner of Police, Dimapur, Limasunep Jamir, IPS, during a brief function d at Holy Cross, Dimapur, junction, Friday.

In his speech, Jamir said good roads were an essential need for a city or town, and that there were numerous shortcomings of a city when there was no good road.

Encouraging the youths to take initiatives alongside gover nment agencies, the commissioner said, “instead of blaming various departments or implementing agencies, voluntary approach through small initiatives are very important and effective.�

Admitting that overnight change and tremendous development may not happen, Jamir said small initiative taken now would ultimately bring about a bigger change. Jamir cited that potholes were also one reason for accidents and traffic in Dimapur.

The commissioner hoped that the initiative “Smooth Ride for Dimapur� taken up as a collaborative work would ease and improve traffic concerns which had become a main culprit in accident cases.

Jamir assured assistance in the project in the form of manpower and logistic supports from the Police department whenever required.

Earlier, the inaugural was chaired by Adrian Mahung, Dimapur Ao Baptist Church Pastor Rev Maong Lemtur pronounced the invocation, Lenti Aier gave the keynote address and L.G. Solomon Rong-

It may be mentioned here that “Smooth Ride for Dimapur� was initiated by Act of Kindness in the year 2015, wherein the group filled up some of the worst potholes in and around Dimapur city.

The group depended solely on donations from the group members and well wishers to carry out the works which later caught the attention and support of various youth organizations and governmental agencies. The current project is greatly supported by DMC under the guidance of the new appointed administrator, Moa Sangtam.

DIMAPUR: In a delayed report, the week- long incessant pre-monsoon rain reportedly washed away a retaining wall and the ground foundation of Bailey Bridge bypass to Thanamir Village on June 4.

This was informed in a press note by Thanamir Village Students’ Union (TVSU) president, N.Yapmule and general secretary, M.Topanthong.

According to TVSU, the bridge was constructed a couple of years back; the only bypass to Thanamir village where mostly tourist travelers and visitors come from different places and from within and outside the state of Nagaland.

TVSU cited unprecedented moisture in the soil and abnormal humidity due to long period of rain as the reason. The ground

foundation and retaining wall of the bridge were partially washed away during consequent rainfall, it added.

The union has informed that engineers/ officials of the department have swung into action to tackle and mitigate the problem faced by general public. It therefore appealed the concerned department to look into the matter at the earliest for the convenience of the general public.

It may be mentioned that Thanamir is also known as “Apple Village� and one of the major tourist attraction of the stateMount Saramati, falls under this jurisdiction. TVSU further added that travelers and tourist have been facing difficulties due to unsafe condition of the bridge.

DIMAPUR: Kasha Daho Students’ Union in collaboration with Government High School (GHS) Kasha organized a tree plantation at GHS Kasha on June 15.

Short programme on environmental awareness was held before the plantation wherein KDSU president, Kegwayhun Tep briefed about the importance of protecting mother earth.

He stated that it was the responsibility of every individual to protect and conserve the environment.

M’laya proposes railway line between Shillong and Sohra Correspondent

Shillong, Jun 16: Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has asked railway officials to work out plans and design rail connectivity between Shillong and Cherrapunjee (renamed Sohra).

Sangma, who held a review meeting with Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) officials on Thursday, said the proposed Shillong-Sohra railway link would provide new opportunities for the state and the people who would utilize railway for high-end tourism destination and as separate facility for farmers.

Sohra - known as one of the wettest places on the earth – in Meghalaya is about 50 Km from Shillong, the state capital of Meghalaya. In 1895-96, the British provincial government of united Assam built the Cherra (Sohra) Companyganj State Railways and was one of the first railway projects of that era.

It was a contemporary of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railways or “Toy Train” now listed as a World-heritage.

“It will be the most sought after train ride for people who would like to visit Meghalaya again and again. This will also provide a kind of train ride for romantic couples coming for honey moon and celebrating their anniversary in the

midst of beauty and whole charm of nature,” Sangma told journalists.

He said that he had suggested the railway authorities to take a separate dedicated railway line beyond Shillong upto Sohra that will cater only for tourism and a separate facility for farmers.

“As the government is embarking upon mission organic, this produce must find the right kind of market which is considered niche market and most remunerative price, otherwise farming will not become remunerative and attractive for our people. We want to attract more and more people to farming. People associated with farming can also create this whole chain of business which will open up entrepreneurship,” the Chief Minister said.

However, the Meghalaya government’s proposal for the Shillong-Sohra railway line is significant in the wake of the ongoing violent protest in Khasi-Jaintia Hills region opposing the ongoing railway project connecting Meghalaya’s Byrnihat in Ri Bhoi district with Assam’s Tetelia in Kamrup district.

Railways have been opposed in Meghalaya by the influential Khasi Students’ Union, claiming it would encourage influx. Projects like the Byrnihat-Shillong project, which is slated to be completed by 2018, thus stand threatened.

Landslide cuts off Mizoram town

Aizawl, Jun 16 (PTI): A fresh landslide today cut off Champhai town in Eastern Mizoram from the rest of the country, while nine kachcha houses of a town in south Mizoram’s Lunglei district were swept away by flood, officials said. A massive landslide near Keifang village snapped road connection with Champhai, a town on Indo-Myanmar border in Champhai district. State Public Works Department was trying to clear the road and it was expected that it could be declared open for all vehicles by tomorrow, officials said.

However, National Highway 54, considered the lifeline of Mizoram which was blocked at many places due to earlier landslides, was cleared of debris.

Addressing the concluding function of the two-day 16th North East Region Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Conference (NERCPAC)2017, the Governor said that the region was lacking behind other parts of the country because of its topographical features and various unsolved prob-

“Democracy is the only way to solve problems plaguing the Northeast region,” said the Governor while calling upon the legislators of the region to be social reformers and social philosophers besides being the political representatives of the people.

Dr Heptulla observed that Northeast region, due to certain reasons, has been historically and geographically cut off from the mainland. As such, it is necessary that sincere efforts are made in right earnest to attend to connectivity-related issues, she added.

Tripura parties oppose tribals demand for separate state Mnp to be transformed in healthcare, medical tourism hub, says Biren Singh to put pressure on Tripura’s Left Front government before the February 2018 assembly polls.

“The Bharatiya Janata Party is instigating the IPFT for rail and road blockade to create havoc to gain political mileage before the Tripura assembly elections,” Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) State Secretary Bijan Dhar said.

Dhar said that before the March 2017 Manipur assembly elections also, the BJP had egged on the United Naga Council to block a vital National Highway in order to dislodge the then Congress government from that state.

“Within 48 hours of assumption of office by a BJP government in Ma-

nipur, the road blockade that stretched for several months was called off,” he said.

Countering it, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state unit President Biplab Kumar Deb said: “The CPIM’s allegation is totally false and concocted. The BJP never supports the division of Tripura. The Left Front can take legal and administrative action against anyone trying to create trouble and disturb the peace.”

He said the BJP wanted the Left Front government to call an all-party meeting to discuss the issue.

Congress Tripura unit President Birajit Sinha said his party too did not support the IPFT demand.

“We do not support the blockade plan of IPFT. If they organise any democratic movement to protect tribals’ interests, the Congress can support them,” Sinha told IANS. Trinamool Congress’s Tripura unit President Ashish Saha said his party was also opposed to the separate state demand.

SHILLONG, Jun 16 (Agencies): Meghalaya will seek exemption for textiles from GST in the meeting of the GST council scheduled to be held in Delhi on Sunday. Taxation Minister Zenith Sangma said that currently 12 per cent tax is imposed on textiles and Meghalaya, with the support of other northeastern states, will seek exemption. Sangma said the GST council should exempt hand-woven fabric from the purview of GST as a large number of people depend on textiles for their livelihood.“The Centre can impose tax on specially designed fabrics, but the hand-woven textiles should be exempted from GST,” he said.

Shillong, Jun 16 (Agencies): North Eastern Hill University Teachers Association (NEHUTA) today sought an inquiry against vice-chancellor Prof S K Srivastava following allegations that the minutes of a meeting on hill areas’ special allowance (HASA) were “forged”. The association has also written to President Pranab Mukherjee, who is the visitor to the central university. In a statement issued, NEHUTA president Prof X P Mao accused the varsity vice chancellor of “forging” the minutes of the university’s academic and executive council meetings held recently. “The recent instance of the vice-chancellor informing the ministry of human resource development that the executive council has ‘humbly accepted’ the direction of stopping payment of hill areas’ special allowance in its 48th emergent meeting is a total distortion of the actual minutes,” Prof Mao said. He said the actual minutes circulated in the university said “the council resolved that the matter be placed before the academic council”.

S hillo n g, J u n 1 6 (Agencies): Meghalaya cabinet has decided to revoke administrator’s rule in Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC).

Interacting with media persons on Thursday, Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma informed that the cabinet would send its recommendation to Governor Banwarilal Purohit, besides summoning a special session to elect the chief executive member (CEM) in the GHADC. The Cabinet had proposed for administrator’s rule on April 1 last, after it plunged into crisis when the CEM Denang Sangma resigned before facing the no-confidence motion brought by the Congress-led opposition.

Governor Purohit approved it on April 4 and South Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner CV Darlong Diengdoh took charge of the Council.

Mukul Sangma further said that the then GHADC CEM resigned without passing the Budget that forced the government to intervene. It may be mentioned here that the 29-member House includes 10 NPP, 7 Congress, 4 Garo National Council, 5 independents and one each of the BJP and the NCP members.

Agartala, Jun 16 (IANS): Tripura’s ruling CPI-M on Friday accused the BJP of “instigating” a tribal party to hold a rail and road blockade from July 10 to seek a separate state, a charge the BJP denied and said it too was opposed to the demand.

The Congress and the Trinamool Congress too expressed their opposition to the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura’s (IPFT) demand for a new state, which it wants to be carved out of areas falling under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).

“The government submitted a fresh set of relevant papers to the British High Commission here last week and sent soft copies, electronically, to the Indian mission in the UK,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Gopal Baglay said.

KOHIMA, JUN 16 (NPN): Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) president K. Therie on Friday slammed the NPF Central Executive Council for having “no guts” to directly point out at its ally, the BJP party, against ban on cow slaughter. Addressing media persons here, Therie said CEC had “no guts to even name beef or cow, but mentioned dietary restriction” not to displease the BJP government.

He reminded that one of the core issue, when Naga hills submitted a memorandum to India in 1929, was based on differences in religion, culture and custom and food habits.

Therie also reminded that Meghalaya had boldly passed a bill in the Assembly against the ban on slaughter, while Mizoram and Kerela government had openly criticized the ban. However, he said, Nagaland being a Christian state, the NPF government was scared to go against its ally to protect the culture, custom and food habits. To this, Therie said Nagas should discard them (NPF) from rather than giving the responsibility to represent the people of Nagaland.

Reacting to the statement of the chief minister that “Congress era is gone”, Therei said it was too early to speak as Congress was the only opposition party against all the BJP political wings in

the state. Rather, Therie said NPF was heading for “heavy crash” as it was divided into three parts-- BJP, NPF and DPP. When asked about CM’s statement on re-writing the whole of Nagaland municipal Act, Therie said the act may be amended, added and deleted but can’t be discarded.

On queries about the new political party (Nagaland Congress), Therie said any political party formed should be based on ideology, principle and objectives. He said it was time for Nagas to identify issues and manifestos, not candidates or money.

Ghaziabad, Jun 16 (IANS): The Ghaziabad police has arrested the Assistant Inspector General (Stamps) who used his access to property documents to extort money from buyers by issuing notices on fake complaints, and also reduced circle rates of prime properties causing massive loss to the state exchequer.

AIG (stamps) Rajesh Sharma was arrested on Thursday night for abusing his official position by way of corrupt practices that led to loss of hundreds of crores to the state exchequer, police said.

The Ghaziabad police also recovered 70 used mobile phones from outside the main entrance of Sharma’s apartment in Prateek Tower Crossing Republik Ghaziabad. The security guard of Prateek Tower informed police that two cartons had been placed outside the main entrance of flat number 903 owned by Sharma.

Niti Aayog to set up 1,000 more innovation labs

New Delhi, Jun 16 (IANS): The Niti Aayog will set up 1,000 more Atal Tinkering Labs (ATL), meant to foster innovation, in schools across India by the end of this year to take their total number to around 1,500, a senior official said.

The aim of ATLs is to “disrupt” the existing education system by fostering the spirit of innovation right from the school level, Niti Aayog’s CEO Amitabh Kant said on Friday.

“India has jumped 21 positions in the global innovation index over the last two years. The objective of these labs is to push innovation culture vigorously at the school level,” he said.

Applications have been invited from all private and government schools for setting up the labs in their premises under the Niti Aayog’s Atal Innovation Mission, he said.

“We will select 1,000 schools this year compared to 457 schools last year. If we receive a good number of applications, we are

The Niti Aayog is also planning to launch Mentor India, a programme to engage leaders who can guide students in these labs, in what is envisaged to to be the largest formal volunteer mentor network in India, Kant said.

Madhya Pradesh farmers block highways; court arrest B h o pa l , J u n 1 6 (IANS): Farmers of Madhya Pradesh also participated in Friday’s nationwide agitation to demand waiver of farm loans and better prices for produce, blocking national highways in the state for three hours, while over 1,500 protesters courted arrest all over the state.

The protest remained peaceful with no untoward incident reported from anywhere in the state.

Meanwhile, in Bhopal, police arrested seven farmers including National Kisan Mazdoor Sangh’s national convenor Shivkumar Sharma ‘Kakkaji’ and sent them to jail.

Various farmers organisations across the country had called for a nationwide ‘chakka jam’ on national highways for three hours on Friday and under it, protesting farmers blocked the roads. Under the agitation, also supported by the Centre for Indian Trade Unions (CITU) and the All India Kisan Sabha, over 1,500 farmers of the state courted arrest, the organisers claimed.

According to police, Kakkaji and six others were held while protesting on the road leading from Bhopal to Hoshangabad.

Mumbai, Jun 16 (IANS): Twenty four years after multiple blasts ripped through Mumbai killing 257 people and injuring over 700, a special TADA court on Friday convicted six accused, including key figures Abu Salem and Mustafa Dossa, while acquitting one.

Those found guilty in what is India’s worst-ever terror strike are: Abu Salem who was extradited from Portugal in 2005, Mustafa Dossa, who was deported from the UAE, Mohammed Tahir Merchant alias Tahir Takla, Karimullah Khan, Riyaz Siddiqui and Feroze Abdul Rashid Khan.

Another prime accused, Abdul Qayyum has been acquitted of all the major charges, Public Prosecutor Deepak Salve told media persons. Qayyum was arrested on February 13, 2007.

Special Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act Judge G.A. Sanap has fixed the next hearing on June 19, when the Special Court will decide the date for the arguments on the quantum of sentence for the guilty.

nlike previous chief ministers of Nagaland, who appeared to have found it very difficult, if not impossible to respond to the demands of the various Naga tribe organisations involving crucial issues, present chief ministger of Nagaland Dr.Shürhozelie Liezietsü has exhibited a clear and bold approach. One of the issue that has evoked strong reaction and opposition was the issue of recognition of Rongmei as one of the indigenous tribe of the state. After the July 23,2012 cabinet decision that accorded recognition to Rongmeis as one of the indigenous tribe of the state, Naga tribe organisations under NTC and later ENPO demanded revocation. However, previous incumbents-one who initiated and passed the recognition issue the second who appeared adept in throwing alibis- were clearly unwilling to undo the damage for whatever reasons. Despite ultimatums issued by various tribe organisations, they engaged in dragging the problem with alibis and without any intention to accede to the demands of their people. Soon after assuming office, Dr.Liezietsü had the cabinet revoke the decision of July 23,2012 on recognition of Rongmei as an indigenous inhabitant of Nagaland. It took Dr.Liezietsü only 64 days to what the previous chief ministers couldn’t or wouldn’t do in over five years.

It was clearly a triumph of “where’s there’s a will, there’s a way” against “where there’s no will, there’s no way.” For whatever reason the issue was dealt with as top priority in 2012 by a cabinet which appeared more intent on it; the decision was swung by a specious legal interpretation that recognition was a political and not an administrative decision.

One of the arguments made by the tribe organisations of Nagaland was to adhere to the thumb rule of inhabiting ancestral land for recognition. The issue had also witnessed the practical disintegration of the Naga Hoho after CNTC(Ao, Sumi and Lotha) tribes quit. Other tribes under ENPO( Phom, Konyak, Sangtam, Chang, Yimchungru and Khiamniungan) by virtue of their separate body are outside NH but do extend issue-based support. However in this case, even ENPO was not supportive of the role NH played in recommending recognition of Rongmei.

The dilly-dallying and pussyfooting by the government was unconvincing. The excuse was that it was subjudice and the other was that a Cabinet Sub Committee was to look into the matter. Another issue that Dr.Liezietsü is seized with pertains to the Nagaland Municipal Act( amended in 2016). The issue over 33% women reservation has been a fiercely debated issue that erupted into large scale protest and subsequent violence in January and February this year. The government’s mishandling of the issue under the plea of the case being taken to the Supreme Court and likelihood of the state losing the case( as per the opinions of legal experts) and along with it, the danger posed on Article 371A were like red herring. It may be said that the motive was also about fund and politics. Now the house will have to re-revoke the November 24,2016 resolution and re-write NM Act before polls can be held. It is hoped that will settle the matter once and for all-regarding politically empowering women. After this issue, Dr.Liezietsü will have to tackle the Oil issue and NSDZ both of which touch the rights as enshrined under Article 371A.

We are not made for the bright-shining moments of life, but we have to walk in the light of them in our everyday ways. There was only one bright-shining moment in the life of Jesus, and that was on the Mount of Transfiguration. It was there that He emptied Himself of His glory for the second time, and then came down into the demon-possessed valley (seeMark 9:1-29). For thirty-three years Jesus laid down His life to do the will of His Father. “By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren” (1 John 3:16). Yet it is contrary to our human nature to do so.

If I am a friend of Jesus, I must deliberately and carefully lay down my life for Him. It is a difficult thing to do, and thank God that it is. Salvation is easy for us, because it cost God so much. But the exhibiting of salvation in my life is difficult. God saves a person, fills him with the Holy Spirit, and then says, in effect, “Now you work it out in your life, and be faithful to Me, even though the nature of everything around you is to cause you to be unfaithful.” And Jesus says to us, “…I have called you friends….”

e are already concerned about the recent climate change happening around the world. Climate change is one of the biggest challenges for all us. One of other concern when it comes to environmental issue is desertification and yet many people are not aware about it. It is the degradation of land in arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas. It is caused primarily by human activities and climatic variations. It does not refer to the expansion of existing deserts.

It occurs because dry land ecosystems, which cover over one third of the world‘s land area, are extremely vulnerable to overexploitation and inappropriate land use. Poverty, political instability, deforestation, overgrazing and bad irrigation practices can all undermine the productivity of the land.

We should be aware that over 250 million people are directly affected by desertification, and about one billion people in over one hundred countries are at risk. These people include many of the world‘s poorest, most marginalized and politically weak citizens.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development declares that “we are determined to protect the planet from degradation, including through sustainable consumption and production, sustainably managing its natural resources and taking urgent action on climate change, so that it can support the needs of the present and future generations”. Specifically, Goal 15 states our resolve to halt and reverse land degradation.

The World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought is observed every year to promote public awareness of international efforts to combat desertification. This year the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought examine the important link between land degradation and migration.

Among others, environmental degradation, food insecurity and poverty are causes of migration and development challenges. In just 15 years, the number of international migrants worldwide has risen from 173 million in 2000 to 244 million in 2015.

Desertification, along with climate change and the loss of biodiversity were identified as the greatest challenges to sustainable development during the 1992 Rio Earth Summit.

Established in 1994, the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) is the sole legally

binding international agreement linking environment and development to sustainable land management.

Parties to the Convention work together to maintain and restore land and soil productivity, and to mitigate the effects of drought in drylands — the arid, semi-arid and dry subhumid areas where some of the most vulnerable ecosystems and peoples can be found.

Acknowledging that desertification and drought are problems of a global dimension in that they affect all regions of the world and that joint action by the international community is needed to combat desertification and drought, particularly in Africa, the General Assembly declared 17 June to be “World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought” by its resolution A/RES/49/115 adopted in December 1994.

Some of the previous year’s themes/ focus areas are as follows: 2016: Protect Earth. Restore Land. Engage People 2015: No such thing as a free lunch. Invest in healthy soils 2014: Land Belongs to the Future - Let’s Climate Proof It 2013: Drought and water scarcity.

2012: Healthy soil sustains your life: Let’s go land-degradation neutral” 2011: Forests keep drylands working.

2010: Enhancing soils anywhere enhances life everywhere Desertification is a global issue, with serious implications worldwide for biodiversity, eco-safety, poverty eradication, socio-economic stability and sustainable development. Drylands are already fragile. As they become degraded, the impact on people, livestock and environment can be devastating. Some 50 million people may be displaced within the next 10 years as a result of desertification.

Some two billion people depend on ecosystems in dry land areas, 90% of whom live in developing countries.

Many of us may not see the problem directly but it a global concern now. Its high time that we remain prepare to combat desertification.

An earnest appeal to any or all Gau Rakshaks

ir, sirs, mister or misters, whatever the case may be, (I have added the mister/misters because that seems to be the accepted mode of addressing strangers in the Hindi Heartland of India).

I am constrained to write to you because no one else seems to be in a position to help me out of my dilemma. I understand that your “angrezi” may not be “ekdum pucca” so I will break it down into numbered points.

1. I cultivate some paddy fields in Northern Sumi, at the quadri-junction of Zuxushe, Changki, Mekokla and Shahphu Villages. Mechanisation is still a dream for me and my neighbouring farmers, for, in Nagaland, your political connection, not the fact that you are a farmer, qualifies you to receive subsided tractors and farm equipment. So we use Oxen (castrated cows) to till our fields and thresh our paddy.

2. Coincidently, with the coming of the B.J.P. Party to power and government in India, a predator, either a tiger or a leopard, has been slaughtering my neighbours’ and my cattle for the past few years. Within the month of May and June of this year, I have lost two oxen and a cow and its calf to this predator. We have lost a total of 10cows to this beast.

3. We Nagas are mighty hunters and will have no problem disposing of this killer of cows; but the leopard is an endangered and protected animal and we would not want to risk prosecution for shooting it; and, Bhagwan forbid it should be a tiger killing these cows, for then we would risk longer jail terms for shooting, not only an endangered and protected animal, but also the National Animal.

4. I appeal to you because I have read about you and seen videos of your bravery in beating up any suspected cow killers. I assure you that in my case, there is full proof that this animal is a cow killer. So please come to Nagaland and beat up or kill (your choice) this horrible Killer of Cows.

5. I am in full agreement with you that the cow is the most important animal of all because no other animal does all of the following:(a) Ploughs our fields and threshes our paddy. (b) Gives us milk to drink. (c) Provides us dung for use as cooking fuel. (d) Pulls carts to transport people and goods But in my case it serves a fifth purpose:(e) It gives me meat to eat when it is too old to work or give milk.

My last point proves that the cow is more important to me than to you;for while you find only 4 uses for the cow, I have 5 uses for it; and this Christmas, I will have to go without eating beef because of this Cow-Killer. So, please do help out a fellow lover of the cow.

agaland is not too small a nation as many people think to be. The Nagaland or Nagalim or by what name we call it to be. It doesn’t matter much according to my understanding. The present Nagaland is about 17000sq km (16, 579 sq km) in area and has a population of about 20,00000 (1980602 according to 2011 census).

If the entire Naga inhabited areas are counted, it will not come below 80,000 sq km in area with a population of more than 8,000,000. Though the hilly areas are sparsely populated, the plains sectors are tensely populated. The half of the so-called Surma Valley in Assam adjoining Nagaland (plains sector) with its lush green extensive gardens is Nagas’ land.

The erstwhile British colonial authorities gave it to the Assam province for their vested interest without informing and consulting the Nagas living along the stretches of the area. But till today, the Nagas and the succeeding Nagaland Govt. could do nothing on this great issue. Only during the Chief Ministership of S.C. Jamir the Merapani war in 1985 between Nagaland and Assam, the Nagas won the

war but even the liberated areas of land were again given to Assam which was a replica of or was liken the saying, “operation was successful, but the patient died” had been displayed.

The present Nagaland state alone is not too small a nation. As per records available to us, there are more than forty (40) sovereign Independent Nations and as members of the UNO which are either equivalent or less than the Nagaland state in terms of area and population, some which are not even half of Nagaland state in terms of population and area, viz- (See table) After the Great Second World War, the colonial powers of the world like, United Kingdom, France, Spain, Portugal etc set free many of their respective colonized nations and countries around the world and even many small nations as noted above.

Before the British colonial power leave Indian sub-continent, the Nagas had been telling the British imperial representatives that the Nagas would live as Independent people as before the British entered Nagaland when the British would leave Indian sub-continent.

These assertions were

made by the Nagas before the British authorities verbally as well as in written memoranda on many occasions. But the British authorities so arrogantly and mindlessly left the Nagas under the mercy of the Indian Govt.

The British Govt showed their gratefulness to India by granting Independence for Indians help in the World War II. But the British Govt did not extend any gratitude to the Nagas who helped them in World War I and World War II. The final battle between the British and the Japanese was fought at Kohima, Nagaland and with the support and good wishes of the Naga people the British Army defeated the Japanese army in the land of the Nagas.

But the heartless British authorities betrayed the Nagas politically and encroached vast areas of the Nagaland and they kept under the control of Assam when they left Indian subcontinent.

Under their rule of certain parts of Nagaland by the British, the Nagas were not even cut their hairs in British style, the students were not allowed to wear even half-pants. When great Naga leader A.Z. Phizo and his two friends Khodao and Yongkong went to London to seek help from the British Govt., the British Govt did nothing for the Nagas.

Rather they looked upon the Naga Leaders with contempt.

But the Nagas still regard the ungrateful British people as Gods and angels.

When any British man come to Nagaland the Nagas treats them as Gods. What a pity??

What the Nagas has got some degree of modern civilization is through missionaries from U.S.A and Rome, and we are very grateful to them for their service to the people of Nagaland.

Now, if the Indian leaders think and understand that the Naga case is genuine and Naga history is unique, then it is high time for Indian Govt. to recognise the Sovereign Independence of Nagaland.

A lion bows to a cat

As I go through Nagaland Post Tuesday. June 13, 2017 issue I was shocked and felt ashamed, because I am one of the Nagas. The news goes like this; A Director General of Police (DGP) keeps a person of lower rank than himself/herself as permanent (paid) consultant. This kind of practice speaks many things. First, the one who requires a consultant indicates that he/she is incapable to handle his/her office. Second, keeping a consultant who is lower rank than himself/herself is absolutely illogical and so the purpose of it is something else.

The question is consultant for what? Who appointed that consultant? If at all consultant is necessary are there no one from the Nagas? Keeping a consultant whose integrity is questionable is self destruction and exactly the same thing happened to the Nagaland Government.

The one who keeps a consultant is the sign of dependant, immature and inefficient and not worthy to be an officer. Those people should not be given responsible job. If our people are still depending on other consultants, we are still babies not ready for solid food. In the context of requiring a consultant, we the Nagas are still long way to go for freedom. Even if freedom is given, we will not be able to move with it. It will be like young David, who was given the amours of Saul.

We the Nagas need someone to hold our hands to walk properly. That is what keeping a consultant is all about. Anyway, whether we the Nagas still need consultant is an issue that needs further discussion. But in the real analysis, all these things are nothing but the process of corruption. This is how corruption is done. But remember, no one can deceive everybody every time. His/her time will come in its due time when all his/her dirty and hidden things will be exposed to light. Human authority may not be able to impose a fitting punishment upon him/her, but our God of justice Who sees all our movements and who keeps records of all our activities will judge every one of us in His due time. If we are lucky, the judgment will befall either on our children or on our grand children. There will be a time, when we realize that our money cannot save us nor we cannot bribe God as we are doing it to human being today.

Pathetic power supply in Dimapur

Your June 15 editorial has truly highlighted the pathetic condition of the State’s power infrastructure due to which many reels under the sweltering summer heat, especially Dimapurians, as the demand for power reaches its peak during the season.

Protests, write-ups, appeals, memorandums and ultimatums have become the norm for registering complaints as blackouts have become a regular feature every summer with no signs of improvement in the Power Department.

In fact, Dimapurians have been experiencing frequent power cuts for the past few weeks which show that the power supply is getting worse each passing year.

Perhaps it is that time of the year when the concerned department must at least come up with an excuse from its ever-ready arsenal of excuses to assuage public exasperation over the pathetic electricity supply. It is rather annoying that despite having faced public ire in the past, the concerned department doesn’t seem to care as no tangible improvement seems to have taken place to address the issue. Therefore, it is my humble appeal to the Power Department to come up with a solution, for once, instead of excuses and explanations.

The concern department may kindly note that excuses and explanations simply indicate that you are shying away from your duty which is to provide uninterrupted power supply to the people.

DARJEELING/KOLKATA: Gorkha Janamukti Morcha supremo Bimal Gurung on Friday asked people in the hill station to be prepared for the “final battle” for achieving the separate Gorkhaland state.

“I urge people to get prepared for the final battle as the time has come for a do-or-die fight if we want to achieve our dream of Gorkhaland,” he said in a message from an undisclosed location circulated among the people of the hill town.

HC directs WB govt to ensure normal life in Darjeeling The Calcutta High Court has directed the West Bengal government to take steps to restore peace and normalcy in unrest-hit Darjeeling hills where a shutdown has been called by the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha.

The directions were

passed by a division bench comprising acting Chief Justice Nishita Mhatre and Justice T Chakraborty.

The bench passed the directions while reiterating earlier orders of the Supreme Court and of the Calcutta High Court that bandh or general strikes are illegal.

Acting on a petition filed by a lawyer, the bench directed the state government to submit a report on the situation in the hills after two weeks, when the matter will come up for hearing again.

The bench also directed the state to make an estimate of the loss of government and private property due to the agitation. It asked petitioner Ramaprasad Sarkar to serve notice to GJM chief Bimal Gurung and party general secretary Roshan Giri, who are respondents in the petition. Violence erupted in Darjeeling during an agitation by GJM on June 9 when a cabinet meeting was being held at the Raj Bhawan there.

The hills have been restive since then and incidents of violence and arson have been reported from Darjeeling town and some other places in the hills.

New Delhi, Jun 16 (IANS): Three years after they went missing, the government on Friday said that 39 Indian construction workers mostly from Punjab, who were taken hostage by Islamic State militants in Iraq’s wartorn Mosul, were alive and “everything possible” was being done to ensure their safe return.

“The information we have so far is that they are alive because we have no other information to prove that they are not alive,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Gopal Baglay told reporters.

Airport ruckus: Minister orders probe, denies intervention NEW DELHI, Jun 16 (Agencies): Aviation minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju said on Friday he did not intervene to get TDP MP Diwakar Reddy on board the IndiGo flight the latter was denied boarding in Vizag on Thursday.

In a Tweet, Raju said, “There was no such intervention... I will get the entire incident at Vizag Airport enquired into to find out the exact details and ensure that lawful outcomes follow.” According to IndiGo, Reddy had reached Visakhapatnam airport 28 minutes before flight departure time.

Since check-in for flights closes 45 minutes before departure time, Reddy was denied boarding and then the MP allegedly went on a rampage inside the airport. Minister Raju was also at the airport when this event was unfolding.

The MP claims to have spoken to Raju, seeking his help. What happened then is not clear but Reddy eventually took the flight to Hyderabad he was denied boarding.

“The MP sought the minister’s help but the minister said he will not intervene. He told the MP that CCTV footage will be examined to see who is at fault,” a close aide of the minister said.

Almost all Indian carriers have banned Reddy from their flights due to his allegedly disruptive behaviour at the Visakhapatnam airport.

LeT kills 6 policemen in south Kashmir Anantnag, Jun 16 (IANS): At least six policemen, including a Station House Officer (SHO), were killed in a militant ambush on a police party near Achabal town in south Kashmir, officials said.

The LeT has claimed responsibility for the attack that came hours after security forces killed one of the group’s top commanders.

Deputy Commissioner Anantnag, Sayed Abid Rashid confirmed the killing of the policemen, adding that two civilians were also injured. The in-

jured have been shifted to Srinagar.

In an e-mailed statement to a local news agency Lashkar-e-Taiba (Let) claimed responsibility for the attack.

Police sources said 1015 heavily armed militants attacked the police party, led by SHO Feroz Ahmad Dar, near Thajiwara and also looted their weapons.

The attack came hours after security forces killed two LeT militants, including commander Junaid Mattoo, in Arwani village of south Kashmir.

“We direct that the unauthorised and illegal construction raised in violation of the planning laws affecting environment, ecology and natural resources adversely, should be demolished in terms of the provisions of the NGT Act of 2010,” the NGT had said.

The committee decided to raise with the central government two issues -- assurance of Minimum Support Price (MSP), as recommended by the M.S. Swaminathan panel in its report, and waiver of all farm debts.

Yadav said the march would be the first leg of a bigger movement, and this time they would take “the farmer struggle to its logical conclusion”.

Adopting the dispatch on introduction of the AEOI, a global convention for automatic information exchange on tax matters, the Swiss Federal Council said the implementation is planned for 2018 and the first set of data should be exchanged in 2019.

The council, which is the top governing body of the European nation, will soon notify the Indian government about the exact date from which the automatic exchange would begin. ISIS chief Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi may have been killed, says Russia MOSCOW, JUN 16 (PTI): Russia today said it was verifying whether the elusive Islamic State terror group chief Abu Bakr alBaghdadi had been killed in a targeted Russian airstrike in strife-torn Syria last month.

The airstrike on May 28 was carried out on the outskirts of the dreaded militant group’s de facto capital Raqqa, on a command post where ISIS leaders were meeting, according to Russian state media reports.

“According to information, which is being verified via different channels, the meeting was also attended by the (ISIS) leader Ibrahim Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, who was eliminated in the strike,” the ministry said, according to the TASS news agency.

The leaders were discussing their exit from the city through the so-called southern corridor, the ministry said. The airstrike was carried out following drone footage confirmation of the council’s meeting location,

LONDON, JUN 16 (PTI): A man with a knife was arrested today by Scotland Yard’s armed officers near the gates of the UK Parliament amid heightened security fears in the capital following the horrific terror attack earlier this month.

The Metropolitan Police said the man -- in his 30s – was arrested for possession of a knife and there were no reports of any injuries.

“Man arrested near Palace of Westminster re possession of a knife. No reported injuries,” the Met Police said in a statement on Twitter.

Witnesses reported hearing “knife, knife, knife” as armed officers swooped on the suspect, who looked in his 30s. The man, wearing a grey hooded top, ran towards the St Stephen’s entrance of the Houses of Parliament, which is the main visitor’s entrance to the building. It is feared it may have been an attempted copy-cat terror attack from March, when Khalid Masood rammed a car into the side of the Palace of Westminster, which houses the UK Parliament, killing four people and got out to stab to death a police officer.

Asked about the number of dead, he said he hoped the death toll would not reach “triple figures” and indicated a criminal investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.

“We as the police, we investigate criminal offences – I am not sitting here and saying there are criminal offences that have been committed, that’s why you do an investigation, to establish it,” he said.

LONDON, JUN 16 (PTI): The death toll in the horrific fire that engulfed a 24storey tower in west London rose to 30 today amid fears that it could climb to over 100 in one of the worst fire tragedies in the country.

Metropolitan police commander Stuart Cundy said, “We know that at least 30 people who have died.

The bodies have been taken to a morgue, but more bodies remain in the building.”

“We always knew that the death toll would increase,” Cundy said, adding that there was nothing to suggest that the fire at the

Grenfell Tower was started deliberately.

The investigation into the cause of the fire that has now been extinguished will take weeks, he added.

“Sadly we do not expect there to be any survivors,” Cundy said.

Earlier today, Scotland Yard expressed fears that all the victims of the massive fire that engulfed a 24-storey tower in west London may never be identified.

While 30 people have been confirmed dead, there are fears the death toll could hit hundreds. Cundy said there was “a risk that sadly we may not be able to identify everybody”.

According to the statement issued on Thursday, the EU and the UK are set to begin negotiations on Article 50, which was triggered on March 29 and sets out the procedure for withdrawing from the 27-member bloc, reports Efe news.

“Michel Barnier, the European Commission’s Chief Negotiator, and David Davis, Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union, agreed today to launch Article 50 negotia-

tions on Monday, June 19,” the statement said. The negotiations are scheduled to last approximately 18 months, from June to November 2018, a short period of time given the number of subjects that will need to be covered as the UK breaks free of the EU. UK Prime Minister Theresa May had hoped to enter negotiations with a strong bargaining hand, but the recent snap general elections have left her without a majority in Parliament and mired in talks between her Conservative Party and the minor Democratic Unionist Party of Northern Ireland in a bid to achieve a ruling pact.

G E N E VA , J U N 1 6 (AFP): The UN said today that Islamic State group jihadists may be holding more than 100,000 Iraqi civilians as human shields in the Old City of Mosul.

Iraqi forces are fighting to retake Mosul from IS, after the jihadist group overran the city in 2014, imposing its brutal rule on its inhabitants.

The UN refugee agency’s representative in Iraq Bruno Geddo said IS had been capturing civilians in battles outside of Mosul and had been forcing them into the Old City, one of the last parts of the city in their grip.

“More than 100,000 civilians may still be held in the Old City,” Geddo told reporters in Geneva.

Govt open to possibility of bidding for 2032 Olympics

C H E N NA I , J u n 1 6 (PTI): The Indian Olympic Association president N Ramachandran on Friday claimed that the government has agreed to consider the possibility of India bidding for the 2032 Olympics’ hosting rights.

Speaking to reporters here after being elected as president of the Tamil Nadu Olympic Association (TNOA), he said, “the government in principle has agreed to look into the possibility of bidding for the Olympics in 2032. It is at a very preliminary stage.

We need to get all the approvals.”

Ramachandran said bidding for the mega-event would involve an elaborate process.

“IOA has to make a proposal and give it to the gover nment. That has to be agreed to by the government. Then the government has to give a sovereign guarantee. Not only from the incumbent government but also from the Leader of the Opposition,” he explained. “And, the Chief Minister of the State in which the chosen

Sohail backtracks on match-fixing allegations Lahore, Jun 16 (IANS): Former star batsman Aamer Sohail has backtracked on his comments after his claim that the Pakistan team fixed matches at the ongoing Champions Trophy cricket tournament drew widespread criticism across the country.

The former national team captain had made the claim after Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka in their last match in Group B on June 12 to qualify for the semi-finals of the Champions Trophy.

But on Friday, Sohail claimed that he never accused the national team of fixing matches and was only criticising Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed for not dedicating the win over Sri Lanka to legendary batsman Javed Miandad, whose birthday fell on that day.

“Sarfraz was asked after the Sri Lanka match whether he wanted to dedicate the win to Miandad.

But I heard reports that he refused to do so and said Miandad criticises the team too much.

“What I meant was that Sarfraz has become captain only recently and Miandad is a very big name in Pakistan cricket. He should

not have said such things. If Miandad says something, it is only for the improvement of Pakistan cricket,” Sohail told Pakistani channel Samaa TV. “The other thing I said was that the facilitators of the win cannot be named; however I said nothing about match-fixing or any other foul play -- my statement was misunderstood.

“If Pakistan is winning, then why bring up references to match fixing? I don’t know what agenda people who make such allegations are following,” he added.

The former head of the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) selection committee also asserted that he always praised Sarfraz’s talent and wanted him to achieve more success as the Pakistan captain.

DIMAPUR, JUN 16 (NPN): Special Olympics Nagaland (SON) team won five medals including gold in the recently concluded 5th National Games for disabled at Gandhi Nagar, Gujarat from June 5-10.

race and Rongsen Jamir in badminton while Pritom Tati and Shitimong bagged bronze medals in 100 m race and shotput respectively. The team included ten special athletes and four coaches/escorts led by coach, Imnukti Nokdir.

On Friday, SON members and coaches called upon DC Dimapur Kesonyu Yhome at the DC conference hall and briefed on

the team’s performances at the competition. They also highlighted on the non-intervention by the state government despite a memorandum submitted to the government on March 2017.

According to them, SON members and coaches have been rendering honorary services with a core target to give justice of humanity to the neglected Persons

with Disabilities in the state.

However, state government has failed to acknowledge the achievements of SON. They therefore, reiterated that the state government as a responsible authority should deliver fair justice by sanctioning cash award to national and international medal winners. It also wanted the government to approve CM special development fund for SON

coaches and to ear-mark yearly budget/grant for SON management and activities. In this regard, SON members urged upon DC to take up the above mentioned matter with the higher authority.

In reply, DC assured to take up the matter at the government level and also to look into the problems faced by the coaches.

He maintained that it was important and everyone duty to support the special children, and encouraged the parents to take the challenges and extend support to the children who needed special attention. He also lauded the performances of the SON athletes at the competition. It may be noted that SON started in Nagaland State in the year 2009, wholly committed for the development of all types of Persons with Disabilities, especially through the medium of Sports and Games competitions.

New Delhi, Jun 16 (IANS): India football team skipper Sunil Chhetri has now overtaken England and Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney as the fourth highest active international scorer in the world.

After his majestic strike against Kyrgyzstan in the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers in Bengaluru on Wednesday, Chhetri, who plies his trade for Bengaluru FC in club football, toppled Rooney who has netted 53 goals so far for the Three Lions.
