NE states need special attention
PANAJI, JUN 16 (AGENCIES): North Eastern states require special attention from the rest of the country, Power Minister Piyush Goyal said on Thursday. “Unless we care for northeast India, we will never be able to change the future of India,” he said, delivering the inaugural address at the twoday conference of state power ministers near Panaji, adding the region requires concern, care, commitment and special attention from everyone. “I am happy that this conference has developed into a good platform for exchange of ideas and to understand each other’s problems,” he added. The Union minister also sought the support of the states to stop the menace of power thefts in the country. Sharing Gujarat’s experience of reduction of power thefts, Goyal said the tariff increase in the state had been

the lowest. “It is not the poor who steal, and it’s the bigger power thefts which make corruption,” he said. The half-yearly conference aims to review implementation of various ongoing schemes, programmes and issues pertaining to the power, coal and renewable energy sectors. Among other issues, “adoption of energy conservation building codes by states
and energy efficient agricultural pumps will be discussed”, a power ministry statement said. “In the area of renewable energy, state-wise review will be taken on solar power, wind power and small hydro power as well as the compliance of Renewable Purchase Obligations (RPOs) and Renewable Energy Certificates,” it added. Meanwhile, voicing his displeasure at the absence of
some states at the power minsters conference here, Goyal on Thursday sought a report into their non-participation. “Please let me know why some of the states are not represented here. I presume if ministers have not come, their secretaries must have come. But if secretaries have also boycotted the meeting, submit a report to me,” he told the Power secretary.
Centre warns states for irregularities in power schemes “Dinadayal Upadhyay Gram Jyoti Yojana and the integrated power development scheme are largely funding the investments in this roll out of rural electrification and urban upgradation,” he said. “We will be watching and closely monitoring the technology and quality of products that are being bought by the states. We will be monitoring the pricing at which these are being bought and transparency
with which these are being purchased. “Any problems associated with the quality, technology, pricing or corruption that are brought to our notice will be promptly put up on the website (of the ministry),” Goyal said. So, it is the choice that different states can make, he said, adding, “If you believe that you can do it better than central procurement, you are welcome.
Centre will stop funding states that are found indulging in irregularities in procurement of material for its flagship schemes for rural electrification and urban upgradation of power infrastructure, Power Minister Piyush Goyal warned on Thursday. “I would request states which are not willing to join the common procurement pool to study its benefits, do an apple to apple comparison, compare
the specifications (from central pool) to that being procured with your own specifications, compare the prices before you take any decision. “Any irregularity found by us at the Centre could actually cause us to stop the funding to the states which indulge in any activity which are not in the best interest of the people of India,” Goyal told the ministers and secretaries of states at a 2-day conference here.
Awaiting fund sanction for NH-2 works: Nuklutoshi
NPCC slams NLF resolution; says an insult to intellectuals of Nagaland
Correspondent
KOHIMA, JUN 16 (NPN): Nagaland Minister of National Highway, Nuklutoshi, on Thursday disclosed that detailed project report (DPR) for NH-2, Tseminyu and Wokha sector (from 40 Km to 72 Km), has been approved and was waiting for sanction of fund. Speaking to media persons here, Nuklutoshi said the DPR was submitted last year. However, he said in the process of making it accurate, DPR had to be redone after replying to queries posed by ministry. Nuklutoshi said within “one week or two” the ministry should release the money. He said that along with the chief minister, they had met the ministry officials twice to pursue the matter. During the meeting, the central ministry assured to immediately sanction the fund but due to “technical problem” it could not be released. Nuklutoshi also said that “regional officer” from Guwahati had also carried out spot verification along the NH-2 last week. When asked about the construction of 43 km long Dimapur-Kohima four-lane works, the minister disclosed that the work order has been issued, all land compensation paid and construction work would begin by November or December this year.

DIMAPUR, JUN 16 (NPN): A day after the Nagaland Legislators Forum (NLF) on Naga Political Issue adopted resolutions urging the government of India and the NSCN (I-M) to take forward the August 3, 2015 Framework Agreement and arrive at an honourable settlement at the earliest, the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) on Thursday said NLF represented by all 60 legislators, “who represent the people and the soil of Nagaland”, should stop making repeated resolutions “for the “sake of publicity”. In a press release, NPCC president K. Therie said the legislators “must know” the value of being legislative members who constitute the state assembly. “They had similar resolutions urging GoI, NPGs and FNR recently. The so called resolutions are only programs and requests. They should stop shaming the intellectuals of Nagaland before neighbouring states and the nation,” Therie said. He said
governor’s recent assertion that “members of the legislative assembly were not elected just to make resolutions and not deliver” did not even strike their minds. Stating that 60 MLAs had also gone to Delhi last year at the expense of public exchequer, Therie asked “how many times do they have to travel without results?” and maintained that the proposed trip “will be another waste of time and money of public tax.” NPCC president said that the state was aware that even after over 70 negotiation meetings, the government of India and the negotiating team were unable to bring out a solution acceptable by majority of stakeholders. “Naga Memorandum to Simon Commission was not secret. 9-Point Agreement was not secret, Plebiscite was open. 16-Point Agreement was open. The Revolutionary Government Agreement was open. Shillong Accord was open. They were drafted by
Nagaland’s Leaders. They took responsibility on the resolved points before GoI and the people. This why we have statehood with Art 371A,” Therie said. He said if the state assembly was sincere and has the courage, they should outline the points considering the wishes and the aspirations of the people and negotiate with the government of India “as our leaders have done in the past.” Therie said Nagaland MLAs should not become “so low and weak”, adding that “our founding leaders and forerunner leaders have never stood so low.” He said many gave their lives but continue to live on in the history of Nagaland. “By God’s providence some have lived to serve us and we owe them all that we have today. We admire them and for us, we shall draw our strength from the spirit of our leaders and live to the expectations of our people and siblings,” said Therie.
NTC reacts to NSCN (I-M) statement DIMAPUR, JUN 16 (NPN): Drawing attention to what it described as “a statement by MIP-NSCN/GPRN condemning and threatening the ACAUT,” the Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC) on Thursday sought to “remind the NSCN (I-M) and all concerned that the Naga public had a single Plebiscite of 1951 to support Naga National Movement for Sovereignty.” In a press release, the NTC through its media cell said: “This historical referendum was for a united movement under the aegis of NNC. Beside the Plebiscite of 1951, Nagas had not given any mandate to any political group including NSCN(IM) at any point of time.” NTC said “unfortunately, we have fragmented ourselves into tiny islands branding each island to be a nation is itself making a mockery of our aspiration and to the delight of our adversaries.” It alleged that each Naga National Political Group (NNPG) including NSCN (I-M) has “sidetracked the genuine path of Naga political aspiration at the cost of Naga unity and embroiled in pathetic factional and petty politics which includes coercive taxation on the common man.” “Usurping the Naga National Movement, each group has forced its un-mandated tax on the Nagas of Nagaland is antithesis to Naga political aspiration,” it stated. NTC maintained that had there been a united movement led by a single organization and patronized by the Nagas as prior to the advent of fragmentation, “we would not have grown weary and tired even in paying tax.”
Nevertheless, NTC questioned how long the Nagas of Nagaland were expected to remain silent when they were unable to survive economically because of the “massive illegal taxation calamity.” It said due to taxation menace, a mass movement started in 2013 in the name of ACAUT “against disunity amongst the Naga national workers and their taxation”, adding that ACAUT continued on the basis of resolutions adopted by the general public. While implementing the resolutions, it said ACAUT was found “intimidated by NSCN(IM)” in the language “…why not befitting actions against them (ACAUT) should not be initiated”. Not to be intimidated and threatened by others, NTC said Nagas have been pursuing political aspiration. Therefore, it said “such bully is a burrowed culture and it misfits the nomenclature of national group.” NTC said Naga national movement was for self determination and not for self threat. “We do not blame NSCN(IM) alone for the perpetual division, and yet all the NNPGs are responsible for the public to come together and resolved not to pay tax to any group till they are united,” it said. Therefore, NTC maintained that it was not agreeable that factions have “absolute sovereign rights to impose and collect taxation”. The contentious issue to pay tax or not to pay tax would remain so long division exists and it will disappear when they were united, NTC said. (Cont’d on p-7)
Union Cabinet reshuffle likely after June 21 NEW DELHI, JUN 16 (IANS): A reshuffle of the Union Cabinet may take place this month with more representation likely to be given to pollbound Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Punjab, informed sources said on Thursday. The reshuffle could take place after the International Yoga Day on June 21, they said. Among the probable names doing the rounds from politically significant Uttar Pradesh are party MPs Yogi Adityanath, Satyapal Singh and Sadhvi Savitri Bai Phoole. The names of Navjot Singh Sidhu, Rameshwar Teli from Assam and Bhagat Singh Koshyari and Ajay Tamta from Uttarakhand are also doing the rounds. After the BJP’s national executive meeting in Allahabad, held recently, speculation is rife whether the Union Cabinet will see new faces. As per reports, if the reshuffle happens, some of the factors that may play a role are as follows- may drop nonperforming ministers, number of new projects undertaken in the past two years. Those delayed may also be taken into account. Minister’s performance in implementing proposals cleared by the Union cabinet. Also social media presence of the ministers. At the same time, their ability to communicate with other ministries can also be taken into account.
Wuzu inquiry: Pochury bodies seek clarification
DIMAPUR, JUN 16 (NPN): Frontal organisations of Pochury community led by Pochury Hoho have sought clarification from the Wuzu Firing Incident Inquiry Commission with regard to its proposed press conference with local media on June 18, 2016 at the GA Rest House Meluri. An emergency meeting convened by Pochury Hoho on June 16, 2016 at headquarters office Meluri with frontal organisations discussed recent statement of Wuzu firing incident inquiry commission published in local dailies. In a joint press release, Pochur y Hoho president Penthü Pochury, Meluri Area Public Organisation president Riesoupa, Pochury Students’ Union president Er. Joyson Pfithu, Pochury Youth Association president William Thupitor, Pochury Mothers’ Association president Machü Joshou and Pochury Gaon Burah Union president Nyupuchu questioned “how and why” the inquiry commission was scheduled to address the media when the commission set up by the state government on November 22, 2015 could not furnish even a single statement for the last seven months. Therefore, the signatories sought clarification on the proposed press conference called by the inquiry commission on Wuzu incident. Meanwhile, the Pochury frontal organisations have also expressed their resentment at the state government for the delay in assigning/attaching stenographer and driver for the commission to execute its works on time. “Why the government failed to provide the stated requirements of the commission,” they asked and asserted that inability of the government to provide the requirements showed the government was “not serious over the plaintive issue.”

Parl secy row: EC takes cognisance of President refusing nod to bill NEW DELHI, JUN 16 (PTI): The Election Commission, which is examining the issue of disqualification of 21 AAP MLAs on the office of profit issue, has taken “cognisance” of the President’s decision against signing a Delhi government bill to exclude the post of Parliamentary Secretary from the ambit office of profit. With the President refusing assent to the bill, the 21 ruling party MLAs at present have no legal backing for holding the post of parliamentary secretaries. Sources in the Commission said while the poll body has taken “cognisance” of the latest development, the ongoing proceedings, where a petitioner has sought disqualification of the 21 MLAs for holding office of profit, will continue independent of the decision of the President. They said any decision of the Commission, which functions as a quasi-judicial body while dealing with such issues, will be based on the merits of the arguments to be
placed before it by the MLAs as well as the petitioner. EC had recently forwarded the written submissions of the MLAs to petitioner Prashant Patel, who then gave his response to the submission. Now the Commission, in the coming weeks, may decide on giving personal hearing to the MLAs to present their stand. On March 13 last year, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had passed an order appointing the 21 party MLAs as Parliamentary Secretaries. Subsequently, the Delhi government had sought an amendment to the Delhi Members of Legislative Assembly (Removal of Disqualification) Act, 1997. Through the Bill, the AAP government wanted “retrospective” exemption for the parliamentary secretaries from disqualification provisions. The Bill was forwarded by Lt Governor Najeeb Jung to the Centre, which in turn was sent to the President with its comments. However, the
President did not give his assent to the Bill. Aam Aadmi Party on Wednesday termed as “purely political” the refusal of assent to a bill to shield 21 of its MLAs from office of profit rule, saying it was part of BJP’s ploy to trouble the Delhi government as Prime Minister Narendra Modi was “scared” of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. The party told a news conference that the President’s decision, “based on the Centre’s recommendation”, was not on technical grounds “as being projected” as BJP and Congress themselves had appointed their lawmakers as parliamentary secretaries in Delhi and other states. The Delhi government released an order, dated May 7, 1997, through which the then BJP government under Sahib Singh had appointed Nand Kishore Garg as parliamentary secretary, AAP said and accused the ruling party at the Centre of “doublespeak”.
NPF youth wing slams news report DIMAPUR, JUN 16 (NPN): NPF central youth wing said it had taken serious of the news report-- “After big win in Assam, BJP eyes Nagaland; seeks to take advantage of rift in ruling party”-- published in one of the online news portal including section of the local dailies, wherein it said that the author had brought out the opinions expressed by some individuals including the general secretary of the Naga Hoho. NPF youth wing media cell wondered as to “how a responsible Naga leader of the apex body could talk of the 2018 election, when they were expected to express their opinion on the on-going Naga Peace process and the solution of the Indo-Naga Talk?” Terming it as unfortunate, NPF said the Naga Hoho general secretary, while airing his views, had purportedly stated that “Whatever Rio does to claim back his (so called) empire is to be done before Assembly election that will be held in 2018”. While questioning the leader of being candid, NPF youth wing said he was “so sure of 2018 Election, when even a political party
like NPF maintains that, in the event of an honourable solution arrived at, the Government of the day shall pave way for the new dispensation”. The wing said that the general secretary further went to say that, “he sees Neiphiu Rio toppling T.R. Zeliang government in the near future”. Such “confirmation from a responsible leader” like the Naga Hoho general secretary, has clearly exposed the real intention of Rio trying to topple this present government, it said. In this regard, the youth wing said “Rio cannot deny any longer of his true intention of trying to topple this present government”. Acknowledging that the Naga Hoho was a responsible organization, respected by all, the wing said as its office bearers were expected to be cautious while commenting on sensitive issues. The youth wing also questioned the intention of the author as to why none of the party men were interviewed on the particular issue. The youth wing said that the door was open to the author, if he wished to know the details relating to NPF party.

Mnp CM’s nephew, 4 others granted bail in drugs haul case
Correspondent
IMPHAL, JUN 16: A Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) special court Thursday granted bail to five accused in the multicrore-rupee drug haul case of January 11, 2013 from Imphal Tulihal Airport. Okram Henry, a nephew of Manipur chief minister O Ibobi Singh was among the five accused persons named by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in its charge sheet filed before special court (ND & PS) Manipur on April 16 this year. He (Henry) abstained from appearing in the court on health ground even as other four accused Sapam Argus alias Nanao, Rajneesh Kumar, Ramveer Tyagi and Md Rajauddin appeared in the court where the trial was conducted. Rajneesh Kumar and Ramveer Tyagi are Delhibased medical distributors who failed to appear in the same court in the last hearing on May 25 last. All the five accused were granted bail for Rs one lakh each after the hearing. The court later adjourned the case till the next date of hearing which falls on July 8. The ND& PS court registered the case as a special trial CBI case a few days after the charge sheets were filed. The court had issued summons to all the accused
to appear on May 25. On January 11, 2013, a team of Special Intelligence Unit, Manipur seized seven unattended carton containing contraband drugs from Imphal Airport. The boxes were brought by an Air Deccan flight from Kolkata to Imphal. The cartons were later found containing Robocoff tablets, Seafied tablets and Respified tablets in the boxes. The seven carton boxes were seized by the SIU team and handed over to Singjamei police station OC. Seven days after the incident, a team of Imphal West Narcotic Cell arrested Md Rajauddin on January 18. During preliminary interrogation, Rajauddin allegedly admitted that he brought the seized contraband drugs from Kolkata. He remained in judicial custody till January 24, 2013 as per the order of the ND&PS Court. The case was later handed over to CBI. According to the charge sheet submitted against the accused, Sapam Argus was supposed to receive the consignment. After a few days of seizing the consignment, SIU Imphal West was disbanded by the state government with immediate effect. Following a widespread protest to reveal the names of the owners of the seized drug, Ibobi cabinet had decided to hand over the case to CBI.

ITANAGAR, JUN 16 (PTI): Putting all speculations to rest about ‘instability’ of the Kalikho Pul government in Arunachal Pradesh, deputy chief minister Chowna Mein along with three senior MLAs on Thursday dismissed a report of their alleged rift with the chief minister, which has gone viral in social media. They have also lodged a complaint with the government and requested that the cyber crime branch investigate the matter and identify and punish the source from where the report originated, a joint statement issued by them said. Mein, along with MLAs Pema Khandu, Markio Tado and Pasang D Sona, who were said to be the main players of the alleged revolt, claimed that there was no political crisis of any sort in the present government. “Each minister, parliamentary secretary and MLA is working on delivering the change that the government had promised when it came to power in February this year,” the statement said. “There is absolutely no loss of trust either in the government or within the People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA) and such ill-intentioned acts are only being done to try and create a rift between like-minded leaders,” it said. Ghost of anti-Sikh riots continues to haunt Kamal NEW DELHI/MUKTSAR, JUN 16 (PTI): The ghost of anti-Sikh riots continued to haunt Congress leader Kamal Nath despite his giving up charge of poll-bound Punjab with his political rivals stepping up attack and demanding filing of a case against him. On his part, the former union minister and his party rejected reports that he was asked to resign in view of the controversy surrounding him and that he did it on his own volition so that attention is not diverted from issues facing Punjab. Congress’ face in Punjab and former Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh came to Kamal Nath’s defence saying he had done a gracious thing by his resignation but maintained that had he continued also “there would not have been any difference”. On Sunday, Kamal Nath was appointed as General Secretary and given charge of both Punjab and Haryana. He resigned last night as in charge of Punjab, which goes to polls next year, in the wake of rivals targeting him on the issue of riots. Akali Dal leader and Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today attacked Kamal Nath saying his exit “vindicated” the stand of his party that 1984 Sikh carnage
Teesta’s NGO barred from foreign funds NEW DELHI, JUN 16 (PTI): An NGO run by civil rights activist Teesta Setalvad was on Thursday banned from receiving foreign funds, with the MHA cancelling its FCRA licence. The Home Ministry issued an order saying that the government has cancelled the permanent registration of Sabrang Trust run by Teesta and her husband Javed Anand with immediate effect. The order said that the Home Ministry found that foreign contribution has been “frequently used” for items of “personal expenses e.g. for dining in hotels, food takeaways ordered at their residences, cakes and sweets from premium outlets, purchase of purely personal items like ear-buds, wet wipes, clippers, sanitary napkins by both Teesta and Anand.
Kamal Nath was a “deep rooted conspiracy” of Congress party to “butcher of innocent” Sikhs. “Kamal Nath was reluctant to accept this post because of his guilty consciousness’ owing to his role in massacre of thousands of innocent Sikhs,” Badal alleged on the sidelines of Sangat Darshan programme in Malout Assembly constituency. He alleged Kamal Nath could not “muster the courage” to face people of state who were well aware of his role in this “barbaric holocaust” of Sikhs. However, Badal said that the people of state in general and Sikhs in particular would never forgive Kamal Nath and other leaders of his party who had “planned and executed this heinous carnage”, which was a dark spot in the entire history of India. The Aam Aadmi
Party (AAP), which is trying to make inroads into the state in the next year’s Assembly elections, also joined the attack on the Congress leader. It claimed victory over his resignation and demanded that an FIR be registered against Kamal Nath in the Gurudwara Rakabganj Sahib in which two Sikhs were burnt to death in 1984. After its persistent pressure, the Congress had to sack Kamal Nath, the AAP said claiming it was an “acceptance” of defeat. “Two Sikhs were killed in the incident. So Kamal Nath is also responsible for it as he was their leader. This is an insult to the law. “By merely tendering resignation does not absolve Kamal Nath from the charges and he should be tried for murder and chargesheet should be filed at the earliest,” said AAP leader and lawyer H S Phoolka, who has been fighting for the 1984 anti-Sikh riots victims. He said the role of Kamal Nath has never been investigated. Talking to media, Kamal Nath rejected reports that he was asked to step down as General Secretary in-charge of Punjab and said he quit to ensure that attention was not diverted from the issues affecting the state. He denied that Congress President Sonia Gandhi asked
him to quit the post, adding that she understood the reasons he gave in his letter to the party to step down as in-charge of Punjab. “I called Rahul Gandhi and told him I am sending the letter...I read him the letter. He told me to send it to the Congress President...I called Sonia Gandhi and told her that this is in the interest of the party and we should not let them use this politics,” he said. Kamal Nath said Gandhi spoke with him again after she received the letter and told him that “well if this is your reason, fine.” On being asked whether he was forced to step down as the in-charge after allegations over his role in the anti-Sikh riots resurfaced, the seniormost Lok Sabha MP wondered why the issue of his alleged role in the riots was being raked up after 32 years. He said the Nanavati Commission which investigated the anti-Sikh riots had absolved him. “It is nothing but a political ploy to divert from the real issues. There was an adjournment motion on which Akalis spoke, L K Advani of BJP spoke. No one pointed fingers at me,” he said. He claimed that the real issues affecting Punjab such as drugs, farmer plight, misgovernance are being ignored.
Yet another woman gang-raped in car in Delhi, 3 held NEW DELHI, JUN 16 (IANS): A 25-year-old woman returning home after watching a movie was abducted and gang-raped in a moving car here by three men, police said on Thursday. All three accused have been arrested. The woman, accompanied by a female friend, was returning home after watching a movie at PVR Priya in Vasant Vihar in south Delhi around 3.15 a.m. on Wednesday when she was abducted. In her police complaint, the woman said the accused raped her inside the moving car before dumping her near Poorvi Marg in the Vasant Vihar area. The woman’s friend made a call to the police control room immediately when the woman was kidnapped. She later told police that the two of them were walking towards Munirka when the three men riding a car approached them. “One of the men pulled my friend inside the vehicle and drove away,” the police officer quoted her as saying. The car was traced since the victim’s friend had noted down its registration number. “With the help of its registration number, we traced the car owner in Geeta Colony (east Delhi). The accused were arrested within hours after the medical examination of the woman confirmed rape,” the officer said. The accused were later sent in judicial custody by a local court.
Businessman killed by gang of robbers in south Delhi farmhouse
NEW DELHI, JUN 16 (PTI): A 38-year-old businessman was strangulated to death allegedly by a gang of robbers, who first sedated the victim’s parents with chloroform and attacked him when he resisted, at a farmhouse in south Delhi’s Chhatarpur area in the wee hours on Thursday. The incident took place around 2.30 AM, when the gang gained access to the twostorey farmhouse through a window eluding the security guard deployed at the main gate of the colony and first sedated the elderly couple sleeping on the ground floor, a police official said. They robbed them of cash and jewellery, following which around three gang members went on to the first floor, where
they confronted the victim, Rohan Gupta. They tried to sedate Rohan with chloroform but that did not work and when he tried to fight back, he was attacked and later one of them strangulated him, the official said. The incident came to light when a neighbour called up police assuming that a quarrel had broke out in the family. The police team which rushed to attend the call soon evaluated the actual situation and called for reinforcement, following which the entire farmhouse was surrounded and all its entry and exit points were blocked, the official said. While five of the accused, identified as Ajay, Vipin, Vinod, Shivnath and Vinod Kumar, were arrested, one of
their accomplices is believed to have escaped. “A case of murder and dacoity has been registered and the five arrested persons are being interrogated,” additional DCP (south) Nupur Prasad said. From preliminary investigation, it emerged that the accused had conducted recce before executing the crime. They had keenly observed the movements of the Guptas but the attack on Rohan was unplanned, an official privy to the investigation said. The investigators are probing if any of the accused persons were aware of the layout of the farmhouse, had worked there before or known to any of the former domestic help or staff members of the Guptas.
Why ‘zip it’? Irani asks as she hits out at critics
NEW DELHI, JUN 16 (PTI): In the backdrop of a twitter spat with Bihar minister Ashok Choudhary and other controversies, Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani has slammed her critics and asserted she is not a person who subscribes to the conventional wisdom of not responding to humiliations or provocations. In a facebook post, which she signed off as “Aunty National” - an apparent reference to a newspaper’s headline about her, Irani talked about her career and challenges, stressed on the need to speak out one’s mind and hit out at “intellectuals” who called her “illiterate”. The minister talked about how in daily life a woman is taught not to question anyone or respond to a challenge. “Growing up in a middle class environment (Lutyen’s zone excluded), many girls, who would walk to school/col-

Fresh storm over alleged tutoring in MHA in Ishrat case
NEW DELHI/MUMBAI, JUN 16 (PTI): A media report that the head of the inquiry into the missing Ishrat Jahan files had allegedly tutored a key witness set off a fresh storm Thursday with Congress pushing for suo motu action by Supreme Court, accusing the Modi government of creating a “fake controversy”. Union Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi “hotly denied” that a senior official in his ministry allegedly tutored an officer on how to answer questions relating to missing files in Ishrat Jahan ‘fake encounter’ in Ahmedabad while BJP said it does not absolve former Home Minister P Chidambaram of his “role” in the change of affidavit to dilute the “fact” that she was terrorist. B K Prasad, the Additional Secretary and the official in question, said no evidence has produced establishing that the officer identified as Ashok Kumar testified being ‘tutored’ during his alleged conversation. “I have conducted a free and fair enquiry which my report will reveal,” he said in a statement. Chidambaram, a senior Congress leader, accused the Modi government of creating a “fake controversy” over two affidavits filed in the Ishrat Jahan case and preparing a “doctored” report on the missing files. In a statement, Chidambaram said the news report “comprehensively exposed the fake controversy” created by the NDA government on the two affidavits filed by the central government in the case.
Smriti Irani lege and back home every day, go to the bazaar to get groceries and adequate sabzi in a given budget, would often be told if accosted by a boy or a bunch of them, don’t look up and keep walking straight. “But there would be those rebellious kinds (yours truly included) who would question why? Why not respond? Why zip it? The standard answer such a question begets is that
it is not worth it. Nuksaan tumhara hoga, ladke ka kuch nahi bigadega (loss will be yours, nothing will happen to the boy),” she said, adding it was the advice she received not just when she was growing up as a middle class girl, but also in politics. The HRD Minister, who rose to fame through her TV performances, said those struggling to make a mark are advised that if you go to parties and mingle enough, you shall get work. “You stoutly refuse as you believe that your talent and hard work are the only precursors to success, how full your social calender is should not matter. You are scoffed at and brushed off as naive. But lo and behold, you do succeed,” she said. Irani said politics happened (to her) not when she was a “fading star” or “unemployed” but when she was at
the “peak of success”. “You are given the hard battles to fight, you accept (Chandini Chowk and Amethi were no cakewalk my friends). You work from the grassroots up. Yet some intellectual says anpad (illiterate) the minute you are given the opportunity to serve as the HRD Minister,” Irani said. The minister also criticised the media, saying when she joined politics, she was given a sagely advice that “till you don’t have your own coterie of journalists, don’t expect support to come pouring in through editorials kyunki nuksaan tumhara hoga unka kuch nahi bigdega”. She said the common line of advice was that “ignore the trolls no matter how high they serve in their political systems. Ignore public attempts to humiliate you through sexual innuendos - kyunki nuksaan tumhara hoga unka kuch nahi bigadega”.

GST test
ike all other bills which were grounded by the BJP in parliament during the UPA regime, the GST bill which was introduced in 2011 but could not be passed, is a key bill that would have to be passed by parliament. The Bill proposes to replace the current Indian tax regime which is multi-tiered. Currently, the Centre imposes excise duty on manufacture of goods, and service tax on provision of services (other than customs duty on imports). The States separately impose Value Added Tax (VAT) on the supply of goods and a portfolio of specific taxes such as entertainment tax, excise duties on alcohol for human consumption and medicinal and toilet preparations (MTP), entry tax and octroi. For mixed supply of services and goods (e.g. construction, restaurants), both service tax and VAT apply on the respective components. This results in a multiplicity of taxes with limited cross credits, conceptual difficulties, differential tax regimes between States and undue litigation. The amendments brought by the BJP on the bill was passed by majority in the Lok Sabha but it was fiercely debated in the Rajya Sabha where the Congress stalled passage with two demands- an 18% cap on the GST rate in the Bill and abolition of the 1% inter-state additional levy. Media reports suggest other opposition parties, including the Samajwadi Party, the BSP and the Biju Janata Dal, do not share the Congress stand over GST. After being passed by the Lok Sabha, the GST Bill is stuck in the Rajya Sabha, where the BJP lacks majority even after the recent elections. Union finance minister Arun Jaitley has expressed confidence of getting the GST bill passed by the Rajya Sabha, based his assessment on what transpired on June 14 where he held discussions with state finance ministers. To garner support for a game-changer reform that GST promises to be, Jaitley has addressed concerns of states. He has agreed to allow state tax officials to administer GST for small traders whose revenue is less than Rs 1.5 crore. He has also lowered the threshold level of traders who would come under GST to as low as Rs10 lakh, which may increase revenue collection costs drastically. The monsoon session will show whether the Congress sticks to its stand or retreats under pressure. West Bengal finance minister Asim Dasgupta, who had chaired the first Empowered Committee of Finance Ministers during the UPA regime, had strongly rooted for the Bill but later after the second NDA government took over, he opposed the amendments. However things have changed after the recent West Bengal elections where the TMC romped home with a massive 210 surpassing the 184 in 2011. After her resounding win, Mamata has ambitions beyond West Bengal. Backing GST fits in with her likely future role at the national level. Tamil Nadu chief minister J. Jayalalithaa had initially played hard to get but later softened her stand in lieu of some packages for her state. The Goods and Services Tax(GST) bill seeks to bring positive development towards India’s progress into a nationwide unified market and removing trade barriers in the form of cascading of taxation. 122nd constitution amendment bill 2014.This would replace the UPA tabled bill of 2011 as the latter has lapsed . Passage of the bill would certainly be a feather in Jaitley’s cap.
DailyDevotion “Will You Lay Down Your Life?” Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends….I have called you friends… —John 15:13, 15 Jesus does not ask me to die for Him, but to lay down my life for Him. Peter said to the Lord, “I will lay down my life for Your sake,” and he meant it (John 13:37). He had a magnificent sense of the heroic. For us to be incapable of making this same statement Peter made would be a bad thing— our sense of duty is only fully realized through our sense of heroism. Has the Lord ever asked you, “Will you lay down your life for My sake?” (John 13:38). It is much easier to die than to lay down your life day in and day out with the sense of the high calling of God. We are not made for the bright-shining moments of life, but we have to walk in the light of them in our everyday ways. There was only one bright-shining moment in the life of Jesus, and that was on the Mount of Transfiguration. It was there that He emptied Himself of His glory for the second time, and then came down into the demon-possessed valley (seeMark 9:1-29). For thirty-three years Jesus laid down His life to do the will of His Father. “By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren” (1 John 3:16). Yet it is contrary to our human nature to do so. If I am a friend of Jesus, I must deliberately and carefully lay down my life for Him. It is a difficult thing to do, and thank God that it is. Salvation is easy for us, because it cost God so much. But the exhibiting of salvation in my life is difficult. God saves a person, fills him with the Holy Spirit, and then says, in effect, “Now you work it out in your life, and be faithful to Me, even though the nature of everything around you is to cause you to be unfaithful.” And Jesus says to us, “…I have called you friends….” Remain faithful to your Friend, and remember that His honor is at stake in your bodily life.

Post-mortem
What went wrong with the Nagas? T
he topic sounds silly and absurd till then I beg the readers to read this article with patience and analyze it to reach a consensus among the Nagas to go forward and progress as one;socially, economically, culturally, identically and most importantly politically whether our ideology differs or not. As a Naga I could not really present the solution to our problems but I cried out to my fellow brethren’s to go for a decision which will really benefit all the Nagas irrespective of our domicile status. Our histories has separated us and created enmity among us but to progress as one, the younger generations have to re write our history whether we write it for or against the earlier history makers. Our histories consist of bad blood among our own people and we never had one voice. These two factors are still blocking our path to progress and by progress I mean economically, socially and politically. We call ourselves Naga but we cannot come together as a Naga because we consider everything by our domicile status and also a particular tribe’s status whether for good or for bad yet we never erase the word Naga. Our history has clearly mentioned how we join the Indian Union and how the fight for freedom continues. What I want to tell my fellow brethren is that we had a different choice and these different choices made by them brings more tragedy to our society adding hardships and injustice into our day to day life. We cannot rewrite our history but if we had one voice and taken only
For the love of flower
W
ithout any reservation, I can assertively say that there is resurgence of floriculture in Nagaland. And it is phenomenally extending to the nearby states. As an observant of people who are indulged in flower business, the desire of scribbling these observances came to my mind. It is for the love of flowers: -Gossiping in a village ceased since women are spending quality time on their flowers than gossiping (height of exaggeration). -Some women spend as long as 20-30 minutes gazing at their flowers meditatively early in the morning. -Husbands and children are often dragged to nearby florists and flower outlets, but male drivers mostly bear the brunt (with their hands full with flowers….Mam sahab laga ase ho). -Stoppages between Kohima and Dimapur are not for nature calls but for negotiating and purchase of flowers on the sideways and byways. - Taxi drivers gives precautions to female passengers “rasta te na rukhi bo deh”. -Visiting neighbors’ garden in pretext of prayer meetings are becoming habitual trends. -A little exaggeration but one out of every ten cars, is suspected to be carrying something relating with flowers today. - Several villages are taking precautions on selling and collecting of manure (molds) in the nearby forest, fearing the loss of natural flora, in the meantime the price of Cow dung has been hiked. - A family went to Dimapur for Christmas shopping last year and the mother spent half of their budget on flowers and flowerrelated stuffs. -Several florists are looting, and profiting in the name of flower; they buy with 150 bucks and resale it by 300-400 rupees. - If floriculture flourishes at this rate maybe someday we might
educated and wealthy and has forgotten many ignorant and poor Nagas left behind in the journey since the advent of Christianity and spread of educations, some Nagatribes aredoing exceptionally well in every department which I need not elaborate but they must not forget that we are one and some sisters tribes left behind should not be forgotten and their uplifting must be their top most priorities but unfortunately we fail to see their hand reaching out instead we see only exploitation everywhere. In this uplifting scene, the White people are more like a relatives to us , as they consider that it is their burden to educate the uncivilized group of people and almost the whole world are educated by them including us, but Ifail to see this sharing of burden among our people instead some Nagas in a better position say economically or politically has done more harm to the weaker sections by having a lion share in every department. And at the end of the day we see only chaos and disintegration among us and everyone live on as if everything is ok, pursuing their own agenda be it personal or tribe and nothing left for the common good for the whole of us (Nagas). Working in student organization also enabled me to see how deep or how much we embrace being a Nagaand to be honest I don’t see any Naga but only tribes and tribes and no Naga. Who will help us find the solution to this deficit of Nagnaness.??? Pakinrichapbo, Notun Basti, Dimapur
one decision back then, we could have seen a different Nagaland unlike this present situations where the state government functions and perform the duties entrusted to them under the constitution of India and at the same time the various governments under its respective organization or say the only organization representing all the Nagas as all of these organization claim so. In our small state we have many governments all of them governing and functioning as per their constitutions. Leaving aside the state government of Nagaland, we have many governments which I need not name them as we all know and what these governments contributes to the economy and the welfare of its subjects they govern is well known to the young and the old alike. Sadly the subjects of these governments and not to forget the Government of Nagaland created under the constitution of India are not happy at all and crying out of corruptions and injustices faced from all these governments, my question here is ,where are we really heading to?, If this single government fails to deliver justice and look after the welfare of its subject . If we have to really think for the welfare of the people,, only one government should be governing us whether at past or present but this never happen and as a result we are still one of the most backward people and our region the least developed in this planet. Some well to do and so called advanced Nagas may challenge the ‘backward tag’ but we must not remain blind but speak the truth, many of us have become
have to use beekeeping hat to visit some houses. -Floriculture has reached to the downtrodden and grassroots level, who borrow seeds and repay by saplings; this model must be adopted in Government policy making. -Floriculture has become the talk of the town, every conversation; either by dialogue or by phone is filled with rumors and stories about flowers, especially by the name Geranium. -Some pioneers in this business are importing high-breed flower seeds though expensive but lucrative. Nevertheless, the local ones are also making its entry into the market by the name of high-breed. -Some women confessed that flower mania is the worst kind of addiction; it kills both your time and money. -It appears that in Nagaland every woman ought to have a flower garden a hobby or else she may suffer identity crisis and peer pressure. -The flower business is soaring in a fast pace, that some women have called themselves professional flower brokers, no doubt within no time ‘flower sellers union’ is expected be formed. -So far money laundering was known to us, but now flower laundering have started (cases of stealing and illegally entering into houses are becoming a daily activity) -Florists themselves are wondering how people could spend so much in buying flowers every day. -It is understood that in pretext of making a resale everyone is buying flowers. -Opportunity comes to everybody and this time it is for sure in floriculture, however extremities lead to abuse. Therefore citizens, even if you are engaged in flower business: buy cautiously, profit adequately, quit satisfactorily. Villo Naleo
My days with Gen. A. Maken as P/A in Naga army
1. In 1963 a large contingent of Naga army crossed the border to East Pakistan to procure arms and camped at Chittagong. To work out the modalities the Pakistan general from west Pakistan with his entourage came to meet the Naga army and held a joint meeting. In the meeting the Pakistan general asked the Naga General “What do you eat?” General Maken answered – “from ant to elephant.” They glared and measured each other and that was it. 2. The agreement for ceasefire between the Federal Government of Nagaland (FGN) and Government of India was agreed in principle. Three member Peace mission team was formed namely. (1). Rev. Micheal Scott. (2). Jay Prakash Narayan (Gandhi follower). (3). B.P.Chaliha, Chief Minister of Assam. Ceasefire agreement was signed between the Federal Government of Nagaland (FGN), Government of India (GOI) and the members of the Peace Mission in the month of May 1964 at Sakraba Village (Phek District). However, Gen. A. Maken disagreed and submitted a written letter wherein, he stated that unless the Indian Army is totally removed from the Naga soil, the Naga Army will not accept the ceasefire with India. In order to thrash out the differences the government detailed Mr. (Late) Suzumar, MLA (Unger) to meet Gen. A. Maken at Longmisa Camp to arrange for a meeting between him (Gen. A. Maken) and Mr. B.P. Chaliha. This being arranged Mr. B.P. Chaliha had one to one meet with him on the appointed day at the camp. After a long discussion Mr. B.P. Chaliha announced the ceasefire between the Federal Govern-
Science and religion; spiritual quest for wholeness
E
verything in this world is referred in reference to the independent other. Making a deeper analysis will help us to see the interconnectedness of the various elements that exist. Why does religion exist? Ages have gone by and efforts have been made to chisel it off from the human society. But studies showed that the cycle of embracing, abandoning and re-embracing seem to continue. Both science and religion have something to do with humans. Humans’ absence imply the absence of both. The absence of wholeness creates restlessness. Now, the very fact that both science and religion have not ceased to operate and move higher and deeper are clear indications for their quest for wholeness. People of religion have not stopped worshipping because there is a higher power that sustain theirevery activity and that alone is the sole giver of completeness. Science on the other hand has not stopped its search in the empirical world to crack the mysteries of the created universe that operates perfectly without any human intervention. Today, we live in a digitalised world and almost every aspect of our existence has some amount of scientific touch. Communication has reduced the size of the world extensively through the medium of the gift of technology. One is often tempted to think that science alone is enough. And in fact in the 1960s with the flourishing of science, it tempted many to think it to be so! They even challenged religion as superstitious and tried to oust it. But it did not materialize! Despite the fact that science has reached certain heights, yet it is not the ultimate. There are mysterious elements to be solved and explored. There are untouched depths which continue to elude us from the least of us reaching it. Everything in the world that exists, particularly the absolute theories one claimed in the past are subject to falsification since the era of postmodernism. Nothing therefore is absolute! The mysterious elements in every created thing have hundreds and millions of activities simultaneously happening every mo-
ment. All these raise curiosity to the one who reason beyond the structured frame of mind of the society. Any discipline that exalts itself without caring for the other will see its own downfall. If the church were to be satisfied with the arm-chair philosophising and theologising, there would have been a serious crisis. Religion has its own lacunae and loopholes. It has lot to learn from other disciplines. Through the incorporation of ideas from other disciplines, it finally will lead to wholeness. All our acts of worship through liturgy and gestures are aimed at wholeness. Religion is a discipline that helps us to unite with the higher power. Religion therefore is not an end in itself though there are people who under the guise of divine intervention mislead the crowd for their personal benefits. If science alone is enough to keep one happy, how do we justify thousands of people from the west coming to a country like India for spiritual experience? The longing to unite with the force more powerful than oneself is embedded in every human being. Human beings have the ability to anticipate the transcendental elements and fancy even utopian ideas. For this reason, developments in the history of civilization also had come into existence. Despite the fact that science has advanced so much today, looking at the mighty universe, the developments ithas achieved so far is still a drop of water in the mighty ocean. In this situation, God cannot be ousted. The spiritual self still exist in every discipline. Science wanted to put religion safely to coffin and be buried but the burial date has arrived and neither religion nor its God seem to go away. Recently, I had seen a video discussion by two eminent scientists who visited the Australian University; Richard Dawkins (Zoologist) and Lawrence Kraus (Physicist). They are self-acclaimed atheists. But at one point of time, Lawrence said that he was not an atheist but “anti-theist”. Richard Dawkins who ridiculed the scriptures still read the books of Ecclesiastes and the Song of
Busy summer season favoured with normal weather
R
eaching out a time of annual busy summer season, farmers from Phek region were reported to have engage with their annual event of paddy rice cultivation and is under progressive pursue favouring with normal weather. The cultivation work which usually falls in the last week of May (also termed as Dzutshethokri-a cultivation month for wet paddy field), the farmers under Phek District reportedly facing no natural problems, people from the Phek region as usual carry out their annual cultivation work with pomp and gaiety. The busy summer cultivation season which indeed determines the yearly stock of granary for the people is in its full swing inviting both and young and old to attend their paddy field leaving almost all homes emptied on the day.
An elderly man from Phek Village stated, ‘the rice cultivation work which pave way for the granary to be stock for the whole year to feed, all people irrespective of young and old, men and women rendered their best effort intending their granary be filled with fruitful harvest for the forthcoming festivities’. People hardly find loitering during this season he maintained and added, so as to keep their homes under safe custody a village sentry was deployed in all wards of the village on rotation basis. Stating the very seasonal works as very important he said, in case of occurring theft/robbery problems normally blames were ponder upon to those people who did not attend their field without proper reason. Learnt from the reliable sources that people from the area were regarded as one of the hardest
ment of Nagaland (FGN) and Government of India (GOI) from the football ground of the village on 06-09-1964. 3. In October 1964, Gen.A.Maken was hospitalized at Impur Christian Hospital. A make shift room was arranged for him at the residence of Dr. Ngangshijenba (Dr. Ngangshi Aier) where he was attended by the medical team. While there Mr.B.P.Chaliha and Mr. J.P.Narayan visited him. Their purpose was to deliberate on the issue of ceasefire and how fruitfully it can be implemented. Dr. Ngangshi and Rev. L. Kijung, the then Executive Secretary ABAM were in attendance. After the social niceties they brought out the topic of ceasefire. Gen. A.Maken: “How many good Indians are there besides you two?” Visitors: “Many more.” Gen. A. Maken : “How then, the Indians are prosecuting and torturing the Nagas?” Visitors: (keeping mum) Gen.A.Maken: “One group armed with weapons, the other empty handed , what will happen if both sides are not equally equipped?” B.P.Chaliha (parting shot): “We will see that Indian Army is taken out of Naga soil shortly.” (commitment) After the departure of the visitors Dr.Ngangshi commented that, “Gen.A.Maken is an insignificant small statured person but his heart is like a ROCK, unshakable. I testify that Gen.A.Maken: (1). Was a philosopher who could foresee and read the future of the Nagas. (2). The one who laid down the foundation of Naga history. ‘Nation above self.’ Senkanungsang. agriculturalists from the Chakhesang community and was reported to have posses with huge quantity of paddy in their granary. This section of community were seeing leaving to their field in between 4.30 to 5.00 am as their daily routine and back to their home by 4.30 to 5.00 pm keeping in mind the necessity of maintaining their physical on enough relaxation. Mention may be made that, fields from the region has no report of mudslides and landslides as of now, however following the observation of alternate heavy rainfalls for the last few days, there is a fear psychosis of facing such calamity if the same trend continue for the following weeks. Mention may be made that the best season for the cultivation falls from last week of May till second week of July every year. After the cultivation work is over, clear-
ance of unwanted watery plants would be done in the second week of August to September as part of strengthening the paddy follow by bunching of paddy in the month of October to November. The paddy which normally become matured during the month of November, subsequently harvesting would take place during the month of November to first week of December, thus harvested paddies would be stock in their granary. In the meantime, right after the seasonal work is over, “Khuthonye Festival” will be observe in the last part of July as part of signifying the completion of busy summer paddy cultivation work which is also known as recreational festival. This festival is also celebrated as part of preparing to harvest (Chü)millet cultivation. Kuzhovesa Soho
Songs from the Old Testament. There is something incomplete in science. The spiritual self that resides in every human continues to disturb humans to go beyond the ordinary self. ‘Science and religion are both concerned with the search for truth, attainable through well-motivated beliefs. The aspects of reality they investigate are different - in the case of science, the impersonal, physical world; in the case of religion, the transpersonal reality of God. Neither can tell the other what to think in its own domain, but their insights have to bear some consonant relation to each other. One of the searches of every human is for the ultimate every moment. Restlessness dominates as long as one is governed by the temporal principles. One can securely rest peacefully only in the domain of God. God gave intelligence to some which enabled humans to search the length and breadth of the world to know the minds of the ‘divine engineer’. This search has intensified in the present time even as Teilhard de Chardin opines that the ‘evolution has become conscious of itself ’. Looking at the entire species on the surface of the earth, the species that has undergone tremendous change is the human species. I feel the inquisitive nature and the constant search have led humans to the present pedestal. There are endless activities going on in the world. All these are aimed beyond the periphery, to know what it is like beyond the perception of the senses. Deep within the unsearched conscience, there is always a longing for humans to be in communion with the divine. Different people see it differently and the parameter with which it has to be measured also varies. One’s upbringing has a lot of role to play. This consciousness can set in very early in a person provided the ambiance to adapt is exposed. The longing itself is a clear indicator for one to be in communion with the powerful God. hits out at Nitish Kumar VVIP chopper deal: Michel was Jat stir: Hry FM cautions people BJP over law and order situation eager about Sea King payments against vested interests
CHANDIGARH, JUN 16 (PTI): As fresh pro-quota agitation by Jats continued for the 12th consecutive day today, Haryana Finance Minister Capt Abhimanyu today cautioned the people, saying “it is a political conspiracy by some vested interests”. The Minister said the present BJP dispension in the state had got a law enacted for reservation and then recommended it be incorporated in 9th schedule of the Constitution. “But some people are trying to spoil the peaceful atmosphere of the state by misleading the youth,” an official release quoted him as saying. He urged the youth not to get mislead and suggested the members of all communities to act wisely. Abhimanyu, whose house in Rohtak was burnt down by miscreants during Jat quota stir in February, said the current protests in the state
were not being made to get benefit of reservation “but it is a political conspiracy by some vested interests.” He said that some people see themselves being trapped in the investigation into incidents of arson during agitation and they fear that they would soon be behind bars. “Therefore, such people were again trying to create disturbance by misleading the youth,” he said. Abhimanyu also hit out at Congress and INLD, alleging that both these parties were never serious about the reservation issue when they were in power in the state. The current phase of Jat stir is being spearheaded by All-India Jat Arakshan Sangarsh Samiti, Its Rohtak unit president Ashok Balhara today claimed that the state government had invited some Khaps for talks in Panchkula tomorrow. He rued that the
NTC reacts to NSCN (I-M) statement (From p-1)
Further, NTC asserted that voice of ACAUT against massive unabated tax on the government projects, salaries of employees, business community and the general public should never be termed as ‘crocodile’s tear’. It alleged that NSCN (I-M) and all other NNPGs knew how to “squeeze the gullible people” and never felt how hard the people were hit. “Indeed the public inbuilt irk against the NNPGS on the taxation is punctured by the activities of ACAUT as clarified by ACAUT,” NTC said, adding it was better to avoid giving “conceited languages” so as to avoid aggravation. “NTC therefore asks NSCN(IM) not to contaminate the Naga democrat-
ic ideals with such alien cultures of threat and ban rather than its promotions,” the release said. Meanwhile, NTC has urged the state government to become responsible and accountable to the general public and discipline its employees to function within the prescribed parameters. NTC said the chief minister, who is the head of the state, and the chief secretary, the head of bureaucracy, seemed to be oblivious of their subordinate bureaucrats collecting percentage deduction from salary component as agents of NNPGs, “which is a crime and punishable under the law.” NTC also alleged that the present day government lacked not only transparency but also lacked in functioning under established systems and norms.
Samiti’s national president had not been invited and demanded that he should be involved towards any solution to the imbroglio. As the Jat stir continued, INLD also lend its support, with party’s senior leader Abhay Chautala yesterday addressing their gatherings at many places. The state today remained peaceful and no untoward incident was reported, officials said here. Chautala has so far maintained that his party INLD favours continuation of reservation given to Jats and five other communities. “We will raise the issue in the next session of the Assembly,” he had said. After the Jat stir turned violent in February claiming 30 lives, the BJP government had brought in laws to provide reservation to them and five other communities under a newly-carved Backward Classes (C) category.
PATNA, JUN 16 (PTI): BJP Thursday hit out at Chief Minister Nitish Kumar over the “deteriorating law and order situation” in Bihar and alleged that he “appears to lack political will” in establishing rule of law in the state. “As many as 2,000 murders have taken place in Bihar in the first six months of the Nitish Kumar dispensation. Besides, there has been a spate of incidents like loot, extortion, dacoity....it appears that the Chief Minister lacks political will to deal with the law and order situation,” state BJP chief spokesperson Vinod Narayan Jha alleged. After deliberations on the first day of the two-day state executive meeting of BJP, he claimed perception about Bihar has “taken a beating” due to the alleged involvement of 14 RJD and JD(U) MLAs in various crimes while the toppers scandal “exposed massive corruption” in education. Blaming the CM for various “crisis” in Bihar, Jha said the state executive of BJP has adopted a political resolution
moved by Leader of Opposition in Assembly Prem Kumar, slamming Nitish for “lacking political will” to deal with issues related to law and order and governance in the state. “Not only that the law and order situation has nosedived, but implementation of the Chief Minister’s seven pledges has taken a hit with the official machinery becoming incapacitated due to lack of direction from the top,” Jha said quoting from the resolution. A number of leaders like Sushil Kumar Modi, Prem Kumar, Nandkishore Yadav and Mangal Pandey spoke at the inaugural day of the twoday state executive of BJP and criticised the “unnatural alliance” of the RJD and JD(U). On tomorrow’s agenda, Jha said the Union ministers from Bihar are scheduled to address the delegates and apprise the state leaders about various achievements of the BJP-led government at the Centre, which recently completed two years in power.
T H I R U VA N A N THAPURAM/KOCHI, JUN 16 (PTI): Strongly condemning attacks on its workers allegedly by CPI-M cadres in various parts of Kerala, BJP today demanded Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to take steps to stop the violence and bring “peace and amity”. Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad and BJP National General Secretary Ram Madhav, who spoke in Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi respectively, said this kind of political violence cannot be tolerated and put the onus on Vijayan to stop it. Inaugurating ‘Janakeeya sadas’, a gathering of BJP activists and their family members attacked in Pinarayi in Kannur district after the May 16 assembly poll results were out, Prasad said BJP believed in peace and non-violence. Speaking at the event
in Thiruvananthapuram, he said 11 crore workers of BJP across the country, from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the local level ‘mandal karyakarthas’, were solidly behind the people of Kerala and the party workers. “Let me say very clearly, openly and categorically that 11 crore members of BJP are standing behind the people of Kerala and the BJP workers in the state. This kind of violence cannot be tolerated and it is unacceptable. BJP believes in peace, non-violence and in democracy,” Prasad said. In Kochi, Ram Madhav, talking to reporters, urged Vijayan to “control” his cadres, saying he has the constitutional duty to ensure law and order in the state. All those who were not thinking in line with the CPI(M) were “victims” of the violence “perpetrated by
its cadres”, he said adding “our people have suffered enormously at the hands of the Marxist terror and Marxist violence.” Apparently faulting the Chief Minister for not taking action to check violence, Prasad said “Mr Pinarayi, I would like to appeal to you... this kind of violence cannot be accepted. Police is with you now. It must be stopped.” Referring to the postpoll attacks on party workers, Prasad said BJP had got every right to work anywhere in the country, including in Kerala. “Why I am saying that BJP has got every right to grow in Kerala? Today if we have got 15 per cent of votes and we got one leader elected (in assembly polls), the opening has been made. And the future of Kerala belongs to BJP,” he said. He said such kinds of

attacks and political violence would give a bad image to the country “which is going great” under the leadership of Modi. “Today, India’s image is different all over the world because of the initiatives of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Wherever he goes, be in the US, Saudi Arabia, Iran, or in Afghanistan, all countries are in cooperation with India to speak against terrorism,” Prasad said. “What kind of image would go to the world? On the one hand India is gaining new heights under the leadership of Modi, but at the same time, in Kerala, people were being attacked just because they are BJP workers,” he said.
DIMAPUR: Meeting of the Empowered Committee of state finance ministers which was held in Kolkata on June 14 and 15 was attended by parliamentary secretary of Planning & Coordination, Evaluation and Monitoring and Taxes, Neiba Kronu and commissioner of Taxes, Asangba Chuba Ao IAS at Kolkata. Union finance minister Arun Jaitley along with senior officials from central government also attended the meeting chaired by finance minister of West Bengal, Dr. Amit Mitra to discuss issues related to the implementation of GST (Goods and Service Tax). Almost all states supported the early implemen-
issues. “On one such occasion, Michel wanted to check with him (Nagpal) whether the documents approximately 9,500 pages were delivered to CBI or not,” the charge sheet said, adding Nagpal replied to him that he will check and get back. The records also mention an instance recorded by Bahadur where he said that Sanjeev Tyagi, cousin of former IAF chief S P Tyagi, received “three friends of Michel” at a bungalow in the posh Sainik farm area here in 2008 after the middleman asked him to pick them from a luxury hotel in central Delhi. The driver, whose statements have been extensively used to join the dots of Michel’s activities in India, also told ED investigators that the middleman once gave him Rs 5 lakh for purchasing a house in the Kalkaji area, where he also lives now.

From Nagaland some of the issues highlighted for smooth transition were concerning mandatory PAN for registration, mandatory online payment, threshold limit and CST compensation. Besides this the state also sought support from the centre for training of officials and other stakeholders, upgrading its computer systems and technical handholding. It is expected that the GST Constitutional Amendment Bill will come up in Parliament for passage during the monsoon session, which if passed could see the tax reform being implemented by April 1.

ministration efficient and work towards bridging the “trust deficit”. Taxpayers should not face any problem in paying taxes, he said, adding administrators should have a cooperative approach. “You should behave like mentors to people, rather than invaders. Don’t presume that every one is tax evader,” Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia quoted Modi as saying in the conference. Asking taxmen to set sights higher, Modi said we should legitimately aspire to have 10 crore taxpayers within our tax bases as against 5.43 crore tax payers currently. Prime Minister, who at the beginning asked the officials to give their opinions and suggestions on the issues facing administration in the country, wanted the ‘Gyan Sangam’ to be turned into “Karma Sangam” by translating ideas into action. On generation of black money in the economy, Modi was of the opinion that holders of illegal wealth are few in number and tax will automatically come if the regime is taxpayer friendly. Highlighting shortcomings in the system, Modi said a query on search engine Google on ‘How to pay taxes
in India’ throws up 7 crore answers, but a query on ‘How not to pay taxes in India’ gives out 12 crore results. The Income Tax Department has 42,000 officers, yet only 8 per cent of the revenue come from scrutiny of returns, he said. As much as 92 per cent of direct tax revenue come from tax deducted at source (TDS) of mostly salaried people, advance taxes and self assessment taxes. Prodded by Modi during an hour-long interaction, officers of the direct and indirect taxes wing (CBDT and CBEC) asked if they should act as law enforcement agencies or taxpayer friendly departments while collecting due taxes from people. Another suggestion was to bring a “tax facilitation act” that would frame rules for dealing with tax payers. The rules should also be in regional languages. They also raised the issue of voluntary tax compliance, increasing tax base, upgradation of digital and physical infrastructure for tax administrators. They also suggested how to streamline internal communication within the department and make it paperless.

As per the latest government estimate, the country’s tomato output is pegged at 18.28 million tonnes in the 2015-16 crop year (July-June) as against 16.38 million tonnes in the previous year. Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal and Odisha are the major tomato growing states. Yesterday, Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan had said the rise in tomato prices was a “seasonal factor” and the commodity cannot be procured using the Price Stabilisation Fund due to short-shelf life of the key vegetable.

New Delhi, Jun 16 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi today set a target for the taxmen to double the taxpayer base to 10 crore and warned “the long arm of the law” will catch up with those evading taxes. At the same time, he asked tax officers to be “soft and sober” in their approach and not treat everyone as tax evaders. Addressing the inaugural session of the two-day annual conference of tax administrators, Prime Minister said the foundation of administration should be on five pillars of Revenue, Accountability, Probity, Information and Digitisation (RAPID). “There should be respect for law among all citizens and even fear of the long arm of the law for those who evade taxes,” Modi said. Stating that people should not fear tax administrators, Prime Minister said Indians inherently are honest and asked the taxmen to build a “bridge of trust” so as to achieve tax collection targets without coercion. At the conference titled ‘Rajasva Gyan Sangam’ (Knowledge Conference on Revenue), Modi asked the officials to “move towards digitisation” to make tax ad-

Obama-Dalai meet draws China’s ire ARRAYWASHINGTON/ BEIJING, JUN 16 (IANS): US President Barack Obama met privately with the Dalai Lama at the White House, drawing much anger and criticism from China with a leading Chinese daily saying the meeting exhibited Obama’s “mean side”. The two leaders met at the Map Room on Wednesday, and discussed issues including human rights and climate change -- in what the White House termed a personal conversation based on Obama’s appreciation of the 81-year-old Buddhist leader’s teachings. Beijing has strenuously objected to the meeting. Josh Earnest, the White House Press Secretary, said the meeting’s venue indicated that it was a personal greeting rather than formal bilateral talks. “Both the Dalai Lama and President Obama value the importance of a constructive and productive relationship between the US and China,” Earnest said. During the meeting, Obama repeated the US position that Tibet is part of China and that Washington does not support Tibetan independence, the White House said. The President also urged the Dalai Lama and his representatives

to work directly with Chinese officials to resolve differences. The Dalai Lama fled from Tibet to India in 1959 and established the Central Tibetan Administration after a failed uprising against Chinese communist rule. The Dalai Lama reaffirmed that he was not seeking independence for Tibet and wants to resume a dialogue
with the Chinese government, the White House said. However, China’s Foreign Ministry said it had expressed its opposition to the meeting in “solemn representations” to the US Embassy in Beijing. “We need to emphasise that the Tibetan issue is China’s internal affair and other countries don’t have any right to interfere with this,” Foreign
Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said on Wednesday. In an editorial, China’s leading daily, the Global Times said the meeting showed Obama’s “mean side”. “While Obama often says he welcomes China’s peaceful rise, his meetings with the Dalai Lama erode his sincerity and make him look more like he is helping the latter continue to make trouble with China,” the daily said in an editorial. “Having met the Dalai Lama more often than his Western counterparts in the last decade, Obama has set a bad example,” it added. Another editorial issued by the same daily, which is generally known to reflect the views of the leadership of the Communist Party of China, said Washington’s “unwise behaviour has broken the solemn promise of the US not to support Tibet’s independence, seriously jeopardised China-US relations, and deeply hurt the Chinese people’s feelings”. “By meeting with the Dalai Lama, the US government has broken its own promise and thrown away its political credibility, which is an extremely rash and irresponsible act,” it said.
China downplays report of incursion at Arunachal
BEIJING, JUN 16 (PTI): Downplaying reports of scuffles between Indian and Chinese troops during PLA troops transgression into Arunachal Pradesh, China Thursday said it was committed to peace and tranquility at the border areas. “We have noted that the Indian official has clarified the situation saying that there is no transgression as reported in the media,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang told reporters here today replying to a question on reports of scuffles between the two forces. “China’s position on the East part of the border line is clear,” he said in apparent reference to China’s claims over Arunachal Pradesh as part of Southern Tibet. “As I said it was a regular patrol by Chinese border troops and China is committed to the peace and tranquility of the border area,” he said. In his comments on the border transgression by over 200 Chinese troops into Arunachal Pradesh on June 9, Lu yesterday said that China and India border has not yet been demarcated.
‘India’s NSG entry will shake strategic balance in South Asia’ ‘India inching closer to entering the NSG’
BEIJING, JUN 16 (PTI): Acknowledging that India is “inching closer” to entering the NSG, Chinese official media On Thursday warned that India’s inclusion in the grouping will “shake” the strategic balance in South Asia and “cast” a cloud over peace and stability in the entire AsiaPacific region. “New Delhi seems to have inched closer to NSG membership after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi gained backing from the US, Swiss and Mexico in its bid to join the elite nuclear club earlier this month,” an article in the ‘Global Times’ said mentioning for the first time India’s progress in its bid to join the 48-member elite grouping. At the same time the article by Fu Xiaoqiang, a research fellow with the staterun think tank China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations, warned that India’s entry into Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) will “shake strategic balance in South Asia and even cast a cloud over peace and stabil-
ity in the entire Asia-Pacific region”. It said China could support India’s inclusion in the nuclear club if it “played by the rules”. It is the second article in as many days by the same daily highlighting China’s strident and vocal opposition to India’s entry into the NSG and concerns that its all-weather ally Pakistan will be left behind because “entry into the NSG will make it (India) a ‘legitimate nuclear power’.” “Becoming a member of the NSG, a bloc that governs civilian nuclear trade worldwide, will grant India global acceptance as a legitimate nuclear power,” said the article. A commentary in the same daily on June 14 had said that India’s admission into NSG would “jeopardise” China’s national interest and touch a “raw nerve” in Pakistan. “If it joins the group, New Delhi will be able to import civilian nuclear technology and fuels from the
international market more conveniently, while saving its domestic nuclear materials for military use,” said the article in the Global Times, a tabloid daily which is part of the ruling Communist Party of China group of publications headed by People’s Daily. “The major goal for India’s NSG ambition is to obtain an edge over Islamabad in nuclear capabilities. Once New Delhi gets the membership first, the nuclear balance between India and Pakistan will be broken,” the article titled “Beijing could support India’s NSG accession path if it plays by rules”. The reason why India has scored a big win in garnering support for its NSG membership from some countries is because Washington has started to treat New Delhi as part of the US alliance, the write-up said. “It was only several years ago that Modi could not even get a US visa, but now he has visited the US more often than any other country during his two years in office,” it said.

Trump defends his stand on ‘radical Islam’
WASHINGTON, JUN 16 (PTI): A day after US President Barack Obama criticised him for using the term “radical Islam”, Republican presumptive presidential nominee Donald Trump Thursday vehemently defended his stand arguing that the phraseology makes a “big difference” in the war against terrorism. “It makes a difference and it makes a big difference because unless you’re willing to discuss and talk about the real nature of the problem and the name of the problem, radical Islamic terrorism, you’re never going to solve the problem,” Trump said at a campaign rally in Atlanta, Georgia. He was responding to the allegations of Obama that the use of controversial term ‘radical Islam’ would do more harm than resolving the issue. “We’re trying to be nice. We have a President who wants to be so politically correct that he doesn’t want to use the term radical Islamic terrorism, doesn’t want to use it,” said Trump, who is known for his anti-Muslim rhetorics. “He gives a speech yesterday, a long speech that at the end of it, nobody knew what the hell he was talking about. Nobody knew. He’s trying to justify why he won’t use it and he said radical Islam because he didn’t want to use the word terrorism,” he said. K

Authorities have detained nearly 12,000 people. Some of those arrested were linked with outlawed Jamaatul Mujahedeen Bangladesh. Suspected Islamists have killed a number of secular activists, Hindus and other minorities across the country in recent months prompting authorities to launch a nationwide anti-militant clampdown since Friday. Nearly 50 people have been murdered over the past three years.

Md Sumon Hossain Patwari, 20, was arrested here yesterday for his involvement in the attack on Ahmedur Rashid Chowdhury Tutul, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police said in a statement. LAHORE, JUN 16 (PTI): The Jaish-e-Mohammed leader who gave directions over phone to the terrorists during the attack on the Pathankot airbase has reportedly managed to flee to Afghanistan from Pakistan, an official said. “The alleged JeM handler who communicated by telephone more than two-dozen times with the terrorists in Pathankot before they carried out the attack on the airbase on January 2 has managed to cross into Afghan border,” a member of the Joint Investigation Team probing the attack told PTI today. He said the JeM handler, who is in late 20s, was in the tribal area of Pakistan when he communicated about 18 times with the terrorists. “The law enforcement agencies tried to trace him (in the tribal belt) but there are reports that he managed to escape to Afghanistan,” he said, without disclosing the JeM leader’s identity. Interestingly, during interrogation JeM chief Masood Azhar claimed that the handler of the Pathanokot operation had quit the organisation sometimes ago. “Azhar disowns the JeM handler (to prove his innocence),” another source privy to the development told PTI. He said the investigation agencies have been under “immense pressure” from Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to thoroughly probe the matter and come up with “true facts”

inger Justin Bieber has publicly called out a Hollywood gossip website and encouraged his fans to “spam” it. In a message posted on Instagram, the “What do you mean?” hitmaker called the site “untruthful and hurtful,” reports aceshowbiz.com. “The website Hollywoodlife is untruthful and hurtful. Let`s spam them and petition to shut them down. Go!,” Bieber wrote. However, it is unclear which reports Bieber is taking issue with. One of the articles about him published on Tuesday claimed that he is “definitely dating” actress Nicola Peltz after they were spotted visiting CN Tower together in Canada over the weekend. A source told the site that the singer was “totally infatuated” with Peltz and he even “flew her to Canada so she could watch his show and so they could enjoy a little vacation”. Another article said that Bieber had a crush on the actress since the day they met. “Justin met Nicola a while ago a couple of times while going out around Los Angeles, but they never hooked up cause the timing was never right. He has been crushing on Nicola since the first day he laid eyes on her. Justin has always wanted her,” the site`s other source said. K

The plea filed before the apex court bench sought a direction to restrain the screening of the movie on the ground that it depicted the state of Punjab in a “bad light”. On June 13, the Bombay High Court had cleared the decks for the release of ‘Udta Punjab’ after ordering deleting of a urination scene and displaying a revised disclaimer as per which the makers would have to delete reference to Pakistan. The Bombay High Court had also directed the film-maker to make additions to the disclaimer to the effect that the movie, its characters and the film-makers do not promote the use of drugs and abusive language, and the film is only attempting to depict the reality of drug abuse.

il Wayne put his seizure drama behind him to perform at the E3 Expo in Los Angeles on Wednesday. The 33-year-old rapper had been due to perform at the Samsung booth at the annual video game conference on Tuesday to promote his skateboarding game Sqvad Up. However, en route to California from Wisconsin on Monday, Lil Wayne’s private jet was forced to make an emergency landing in Nebraska after he suffered a seizure. Paramedics rushed to the airfield to give him medical attention but he refused, before then having another seizure as the plane prepared to take off again. He was then taken to hospital. Wayne’s representative confirmed on Wednesday
that he had left hospital after receiving treatment, and he then decided to surprise fans by making an unscheduled appearance at E3. He looked in good spirits as he delighted fans with performances of hit tracks including Lollipop, Truffle Butter and A Milli. Lil Wayne is also scheduled to hit the stage on Saturday at the Sprint Center in Missouri. It’s not the first time something like this has happened; Wayne suffered a pair of dramatic health scares in October 2012, after experiencing seizure-like episodes on two flights, which were both grounded so he could be taken to hospital. The star revealed he is taking pills to prevent a relapse, and is also required to stay well hydrated. He told MTV News, “They said I

gotta drink four water bottles a day, that’s what the doctors say.” He also suffered a nearfatal seizure in March 2013, and was placed in a medically induced coma in the intensive care unit at Cedars-Sinai Med-
ical Center in Los Angeles. The health scare subsequently prompted Wayne to go public with his epilepsy diagnosis, explaining his seizures come with “no warning, no nothing,” adding to MTV, “I don’t feel sick.”
nne Hathaway has been appointed a Goodwill Ambassador for Women by officials at the United Nations. The new mum will focus on addressing the unequal burden shouldered by women caring for children in the home. The U.N. Women organisation promotes gender equality and economic empowerment. Hathaway is a longtime women’s rights activist, and United Nations officials insist they’ve rarely been so confident they’ve got the right person to fill the right position. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, the executive director of U.N. Women, says, “Within moments of meeting Anne, I realised that we had found our woman. To make the case for how this will increase opportunities for women, we needed an advocate who had the intellect and passion to
tackle this complex issue.” “I feel honoured and inspired by this opportunity to aid in advancing gender equality,” the actress said in a statement. The Oscar winner will now join the likes of Angelina Jolie and Ashley Judd among the ambassadors serving the many departments of the United Nations. Jolie represents the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and Judd was recently appointed by the UN Population Fund.

he recently revealed her 30lbs weight loss. And Oprah Winfrey flaunted her newly svelte figure at the premiere of her new show Greenleaf in West Hollywood on Wednesday. The 62-year-old posed in a tight fitting top and elegant skirt at the arrivals carpet, clearly pleased with her trim physique. The TV producer revealed to Us Weekly that she makes sure to save her Weight Watchers splurge points for boozy treats. ‘Tequila shots or a glass of wine. [My best friend] gayle [King] is losing weight faster than I am because she doesn’t drink any alcohol’ she said of the This Morning anchor. ‘But I will not give up my wine!’ the OWN network founder declared. The Weight Watchers spokeswoman also described her favourite bread which she has shipped over from South Africa. ‘There is a seeded bread, I bring home 10, 20 loaves. I am so bad with this bread. I’ve literally been in hotels and brought my own: “Please can you toast this? I have my own bread.” And they’re like “You have you’re own bread?” And I’ll pull it out!’ Oprah also revealed that she is excited about her fitness which she knows is going to keep on improving thanks to regular workouts. ‘Yesterday, I was in the gym working on my triceps, and I was thinking, just as I did the 50-pound pulldown, I am going to be in better shape by the end of the year than I’ve ever been in my life. I really just smiled at the notion: Wow, what a thing.’ The Selma star also talked to Us Weekly about her new role as Mavis in family drama Greenleaf. Creator Craig Wright had originally written the role of Mae for her, the steely wife of a powerful bishop, but when she read the script she instantly knew it was the wrong fit. ‘The instant I read it I said “No, the person who should play this is Lynn Whitfield,” She then asked Wright for another role, ‘I can be a sister or something.’ So Oprah took on the role as Mae’s straight-shooting estranged sibling while Whitfield took on the role of Mae. Greenleaf premieres on OWN June 21.

In an interview with British newspaper Metro, he laughed: “Yeah she ran off down the road with it. It’s hilarious, the entire world called me going: ‘Are you gonna let her get away with that? She stole your song!’ I don’t own the word hello, I own a song called Hello. “The joke is that she’s such a sweetheart. Federer eases through Halle opener, Nishikori out
Roger Federer returns a shot to Jan-Lennard Struff in the Gerry Weber Open in Halle, Germany. HALLE, Jun 16 (Agencies): Roger Federer got his bid for a ninth Halle grasscourt title off to a winning start on Wednesday with a 6-4, 7-6 (7/3) victory over Germany’s world number 88 Jan-Lennard Struff. The top seed and world number three will face Tunisia’s Malek Jaziri, ranked 64, for a place in the last eight, as he steps up his bid for another tilt at the Wimbledon title. “It was hard to find a rhythm today. He took the ball early, went for a lot on the forehand, backhand. He has a big serve, especially the first

one,” Federer said. “So then you go back to basics, you focus on your own serve. I thought I did that very well. He never really had chances on my own serve, so that was comforting.” The 34-year-old Federer, who has now won 52 matches in his Halle career, has yet to win a title in 2016, his longest drought to start a year since he went title-less in 2000. But Wednesday’s tie was just his 19th match of the season after he struggled with a back injury and endured knee surgery in February. His injury woes forced
him to skip the French Open, ending his record r un of 65 successive Grand Slam appearances stretching back to 1999. Last week, 17-time major winner Federer made the semifinals of the Stuttgart grasscourt event, where he lost to Dominic Thiem, who went on to take the title. Later this month, Federer will begin his bid for an eighth Wimbledon title when the third Grand Slam tournament of the season starts on June 27. “I feel after the first round, after having played last week, actually maybe something is
really possible here,” added Federer. “I don’t want to get too carried away but I feel like if I serve the way I did today and I’m able to step it up just a little bit on the return from the baseline, all of a sudden I’m dangerous for anybody. “We’ll see how it goes. But I take one match at a time and I hope just to keep on playing a bit better match by match.” Japan’s world number six Kei Nishikori suffered a pre-Wimbledon blow when he was forced to pull out of the Halle tournament with a rib injury. Nishikori, seeded two in Germany behind Federer and a semi-finalist in 2014 and 2015, was to play Florian Mayer, who was given a walkover into the quarter-finals. “I’m very sad to not be able to go on playing,” said Nishikori, whose status for Wimbledon is not yet certain. German teenager Alexander Zverev made the quarter-finals when compatriot Benjamin Becker, 16 years his senior, withdrew with an injury at 7-5, 3-0 down. Zverev will next meet Cypriot veteran Marco Baghdatis who put out Dustin Brown, also of Germany, 7-5, 7-6 (10/8). Philipp Kohlschreiber, the Stuttgart runner-up, enjoyed a 6-2, 7-6 (7/4) win over Spanish clay courter Marcel Granollers.

Tahir races to 100 ODI wickets in South Africa win over West Indies
South Africa players congratulate Imran Tahir for becoming the first South African bowler to take seven wickets in a one-day international. St Kitts, Jun 16 (Agencies): Leg-spinner Imran Tahir became the first South African to claim seven wickets in a one-day international as the Proteas demolished the West Indies in St Kitts on Wednesday. Tahir’s variety of deliveries helped him claim 7-45 from nine overs as South Africa won by 139 runs, dismissing the bewildered West Indies for 204 in 38 overs at Warner Park. Earlier, Hashim Amla scored 110 off 99 balls to notch his 23rd career ODI century, sharing an opening partnership of 182 with Quinton de Kock (71) to set the visitors on their way to a formidable 343-4. West Indies made a bright start in reply with openers Johnson Charles and Andrew
Fletcher compiling a quickfire 69 before the latter holed out at deep mid-wicket for 21 from the last ball of the ninth over to give Tahir his first wicket. The result was never in doubt once Charles, who scored 49, was sent packing in the 13th over. Tahir’s haul included the scalp of World Twenty20 hero Carlos Brathwaite, who was clean bowled by a googly for a golden duck. Tahir also became the fastest South African bowler to reach 100 ODI wickets in his 58th match and he admitted afterwards he had not realised he needed only two wickets to crack the century until a pre-match phone call from his wife. “I’m grateful she reminded me,” the 37-year-old said. “I’m
really pleased.” West Indies captain Jason Holder offered no excuses. “ We w e r e n’ t g o o d enough today and were totally outplayed. We didn’t bowl well, especially the first 10 overs,” he said. South Africa’s victory leaves the triangular series evenly poised, with the Proteas, West Indies and Australia all on two wins from four matches. South Africa, thanks to two bonus points, lead the standings with 10 points, followed by Australia on nine and West Indies on eight. The series shifts to Barbados for three more matches from Sunday and the hosts face the biggest challenge if they are to make the June 25 final.
confirmed as Messi warns against Misbah likely to retire after Eng tour Indian origin boxer added Tite new Brazil coach
Ne w D elh i , J u n 1 6 (Agencies): Pakistan’s most successful Test captain is expected to make a clear announcement about his future on Friday before the national team embarks on its challenging tour to England. Misbah, 42, was compelled by the Pakistan Cricket Board not to retire from Test cricket late last year and lead the team on the England tour and a PCB official said the captain now wanted to clearly outline his future plans before leaving for England. “Misbah will officially announce it in press or would convey it to the board till Friday about his future plans regarding inter national cricket,” he said. Misbah retired from OneDay Internationals last year after the World Cup and from the T20I format even before that but continues to play Test cricket. His critics and supporters
Misbah-Ul-Haq
believe that the tour to England will define Misbah’s place in Pakistan cricket history as Pakistan in the last four to five years have played their home series in the United Arab Emirates on generally flat pitches. Ironically, Misbah was not part of the Pakistan squad that went to England in late 2010 for a tour which saw the infamous spot-fixing scandal erupt in the fourth and final Test at Lords.
But it was after that tour that PCB decided to appoint Misbah as Test captain, a position he has held until now. Misbah made it clear he remained confident about the team’s chances in England as it boosted a strong bowling line-up and a confident batting line up. “Our batting line is way more experienced than the side which toured England in 2010. Results will be better.” Misbah admitted that the English pace attack posed a serious challenge for the Pakistani batsmen in their home conditions but said the batsmen have been told they must be prepared to stand up and be counted. “Facing the England pace attack will be the biggest challenge for Pakistan. We’ve been preparing for since the past month. Batsmen need to be well-disciplined against the England attack.”

Laxman set to recommend their pick as the next head coach of the Indian team before June 22, all eyes are on the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) conclave in Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh. The BCCI on Wednesday pruned the list of 57 aspirants for the head coach’s job to 21.
Former India skippers Ravi Shastri and Anil Kumble and current selection committee chairman Sandeep Patil are some of the big names in the race for the top job, for which the BCCI has recently advertised. It will star t with a workshop for media managers of all state cricket associations, which includes a session on digital media. This will be followed by a conference of coaches and captains, Indian Premier League (IPL) gover ning council, junior committee and affiliation committee meeting before the all-impor tant working committee meeting on the final day, when the next head coach’s name may be announced, the BCCI

Murray can end Djokovic’s ‘golden slam’ dream: Lendl London, Jun 16 (Agencies): Andy Murray has what it takes to ruin Novak Djokovic’s dreams of sweeping to a ‘golden slam’, according to coach Ivan Lendl. As the Scot focuses on winning a record fifth title at Queen’s, Lendl believes Murray can also halt Djokovic’s march on another grand slam by regaining his Wimbledon crown. Murray has not won a Grand Slam since parting ways with Lendl in March 2014 after two years in which he won the 2012 Olympic gold, the 2012 US Open and the 2013 Wimbledon titles. The two rekindled their partnership on Sunday and are already plotting to stop Djokovic, the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to hold all four grand slam titles at the same time. Board Secretary Ajay Shirke said, “Timing of this conclave couldn’t have been better. We are about to step into one of the most exciting cricket season and this is a perfect opportunity to bring everyone under one roof and discuss ideas and how to implement them.”
Brasilia, Jun16 (Agencies): Tite is set to be named imminently as Dunga’s replacement at the helm of the Brazil team, after the president of Corinthians confirmed his exit. Dunga paid the price for two Copa America failures with the Selecao and a poor start to the team’s World Cup qualifiers as he was sacked on Tuesday, along with coordinator Gilmar Rinaldi. And while the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) is yet to officially announce his successor, Corinthians’ Roberto Andrade let slip the move during a press conference. “The professor Tite is no longer Corinthians coach, and he will not be in control for tomorrow [Thursday’s] game,” the president told journalists the day before the Timao face Fluminense. “ C l e b e r X av i e r, Matheus, his son, and Edu Gaspar will also be leaving with him.” Tite has enjoyed great success over three separate spells with the Sao Paulo club, winning two Serie A titles, the 2012 Copa Libertadores and Club World Cup among other titles. But Andrade admitted he was furious at how his latest exit from the club had come about, pointing the finger at the CBF. “I am p*ssed off with the CBF over the way they came to grab Tite from here. I never received a phone call from the president,” he fired.

Daniel Sturridge is mobbed by his team mates after he scored in injury-time Lens, Jun 16 (Agencies): Daniel Sturridge was the hero for England as he scored in stoppage time to secure a 2-1 victory in their Euro 2016 Group B clash with Wales Having seen his side go down to a Gareth Bale freekick shortly before half-time, England manager Roy Hodgson responded by introducing Jamie Vardy and Sturridge at the start of the second half. The decision yielded dividends with Vardy netting from close range to bring England into the match before Sturridge fired his team into the lead in stoppage time. The result leaves England at the top of Group B, one point clear of Wales, heading into the final round of games. Hodgson resisted calls to make changes to his starting line-up, preferring to keep faith with the team that drew 1-1 with Russia on Saturday night and it was England who started the brighter as they dominated much of the early ball. Raheem Sterling had a
brilliant opportunity to put his side in front with just seven minutes on the clock when Adam Lallana pulled the pall across into the middle to set up his team-mate, only for the Manchester City player to miss from ten yards. England went close again through Gary Caill but their chances went a begging and as the first half wore on, Wales came back into the game. With just three minutes remaining in the half, Wayne Rooney conceded a free-kick 35 yards out and Bale stepped up with a swerving strike which beat Joe Hart, although the England goalkeeper could have done better. Change was needed and Hodgson made the decision to send Vary and Sturridge on for Harry Kane and Sterling. England took control of proceedings and it with ten minutes on the clock Vardy struck from close range after being played onside by Ashley Williams. England dominated large parts of the second half and as they searched for a winner, Hodgson brought on
Manchester United youngster Marcus Rashford. As the game ticked into injury time the game looked set to end in a draw but England continued to press and their hard work paid off in the 92nd minutes when Sturridge
