Govt considering drafting new ILP bill: Gaikhangam Correspondent
IMPHAL, Jun 18: After President of India withheld his assent on May 11 to three anti-migrant bills passed by the Manipur Assembly, the Manipur deputy chief minister Gaikhangam on Saturday said that the state government was considering drafting of a fresh ILP related bill in consultation with all stakeholders, particularly agitating JCILPS and tribal bodies protesting the three bills. Talking to reporters after paying floral tribute to the ‘martyrs’ of Great June Uprising in Imphal’s Kekrupat on Saturday, he said “The bills were said to have been withhold. For the time being, we don’t know the exact reason. So, we now think of preparing a bill which will be acceptable by all,” he said. “If possible we want the Centre to draft the bill or let us draft it strictly following all the mandatory procedures,” he said. Gaikhangam clarified that the bills were not against any particular community, but intended to protect all the indigenous communities residing in Manipur. According to Gaikhangam, Manipuri was minority in the context of Indian population and a legislation, which would able to protect
ASTD condemns threat to Dr. Jamir
DIMAPUR, JUN 18 (NPN): Ao Senso Telongjem (ASTD) has vehemently condemned the threat on Odisha Governor, Dr. SC Jamir by CPI (Maoist). In a press note, ASTD president Supu Jamir and general secretary C. Onen Walling said that the union would not allow “any group/gang/outlaw”, to target Dr. Jamir, who is the son of the soil and one of the tallest leaders of Nagaland. Reminding that Dr. Jamir, the lone surviving signatory of the 16-point agreement, had survived five life attempts through divine intervention, ASTD appealed to the government of India to take serious note of the threat, saying it not only undermines the constitutional post that Dr. Jamir holds as the governor, but also the Constitution of India. ASTD expressed appreciation to Central Nagaland Tribes Council for the bold and timely intervention. It further said that the ASTD was “well prepared to fight tooth and nail for any life threat or attempt upon its bonafide citizens from within and outside the state.” Hoax threat: Meanwhile, as per reports, the threat letter was received three months back. Odisha DGP, KB Singh told reporters that the threat letter was three months old and the police had taken the mater seriously. Further Odisha police sources said, after investigation, they came to learn that the letter was a hoax as similar letters were also issued to Odisha chief minister and others.

this minority populace, was is a must. The deputy chief minister said that Manipur population which was less than one percent of India’s total population needed protection. “…an Act that can protect the minority like us (Manipuris) is a must,” he said, adding that India needed to think of how to protect the “microscopic” populace of the country. Three anti-migrant bills passed by the Manipur Assembly which are aimed at regulating the entry and stay of migrants in the state, according to a Delhi based news agency. The President has withheld assent to The Protection of Manipur People Bill-2015 while the other two bills, The Manipur Land Reform and Land Revenue (Seventh Amendment) Bill-2015 and The Manipur Shops and Establishments (2nd Amendment) Bill-2015 were under examination by experts for reasonable conclusion. In view of the opposition from the tribal groups in the state, the governor did not give his assent to the bills but sent them to the President on September 16, 2015 with the remark: “I reserve the bills for consideration of the President.” On June 7 last, an all-party delegation from Manipur, led by Chief Minister
Okram Ibobi Singh met Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and apprised him about the need for presidential assent to convert three Inner Line Permit System-related bills into acts. The delegation conveyed to the Home Minister the necessity of getting presidential assent to the three bills, which were opposed by tribal groups of the state. The Chief Minister was joined by representatives of BJP, LJD, JD(U), CPI(M), among others. The delegation sought presidential assent to have the three bills converted into acts. The bills have been strongly opposed by tribals. Meanwhile, deputy chief minister declined to give any comment on the “wanted” tag declaration on the head of former JCILPS convener Kh Ratan, saying the matter was sub judice. High Court of Manipur on June 10 last dismissed a petition filed by Kh Ratan against the “wanted” tag declared on him by Manipur government. The declaration was made after circulation of an image in which he was seen pledging his allegiance to the banned outfit United National Liberation Front in social media. Following the declaration Ratan tendered his resignation as convenor of JCILPS.

Residents block rail track over clogged drain NFR seeks 48-hr time to initiate action Staff Reporter
DIMAPUR, JUN 18 (NPN): Several hundred irate residents of colonies around Dimapur railway station on Saturday blocked the railway track here to protest against the clogged drain that has caused severe water logging in the colonies for the past several weeks. Train ser vice in the morning was affected due to blocked of railway track by enraged residents. Jana Satabdi Express, which was scheduled to reach Dimapur railway station at 10.30 a.m., was stopped from entering the station for several hours. The protesters expressed anguish that NF Railway authorities despite giving an assurance to clear the drain have failed to do it. Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of North East Frontier Railway, Lumding Division, Promod Kumar Jain, who heard the grievances of the residents, sought 48-hour time to take up measures. Even as Dimapur Municipal council (DMC) continued its effort to clear the clogged drain, last night’s incessant rainfall caused water logging in new areas of Westyard, Railway Bazaar Colony,

Manipuri Basti, Chatteswari and Grace Colony forcing the residents to block the railway track. Residents of the affected colonies lamented that railway authorities have paid no heed to the repeated appeals by leaders of the colonies for clearance of the clogged drain. They alleged that their children could not attend schools due to water logging on the roads. The colony temple committee was putting efforts to provide food to the affected people. Scarcity of drinking water has hit the area and the
people have to buy drinking water from outside since the water has become dirty emitting foul smell. The water logging has also created serious health hazards in the area. In this regard, the residents have demanded railway authority to provide medical assistance to the affected people. Local MLA and NIDC chairman, Tovihoto Ayemi, who visited the affected area to take the stock of the situation and interacted with the protestors. Tovihoto expressed concern over the situation and said that it was unbecoming on the part of railway authori-
ties for taking the matter carelessly. MLA urged the railway authorities to explore all possible means to solve the problem at the earliest. Tovihoto also suggested that more manpower and machineries should be deployed to clear the water from the affected areas. While admitting that water logging has become a serious problem in the area, Tovihoto assured all possible help from the part of the state government. He also asked the colony members to remain calm as the concerned authorities were doing their best to solve the problem.
NE-SEA connectivity: India, Thailand Nagaland, Assam police Education row: Cong-NPF exchange war of words to expedite trilateral highway work deployed for Rath Yatra NPCC asks NPF Peren division to apologise NPF clarifies to report NEW DELHI, JUN 18 (AGENCIES): India and Thailand have agreed to expedite the completion of the proposed trilateral highway that is likely to boost communication linkage between the North Eastern States and South East Asia. A joint statement signed at the end of bilateral visit by Prime Minister of Thailand General Prayut Chan-o-cha, who is accompanied by his spouse Associate Professor Naraporn Chan-o-cha said that both the Prime Ministers noted with satisfaction the progress in regional connectivity efforts such as the IndiaMyanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway and agreed to expedite the completion of the project as well as to expedite negotiations on the India-Myanmar-Thailand Motor Vehicles Agreement. Later addressing a joint press conference, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said both the countries were fully aware that smooth flow of goods, services, capital and human resources between the economies needs a strong network of air, land and sea links. “We have, therefore, prioritised completion of India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway; and early signing of the Motor Vehicles Agreement between our three countries.”
“Connectivity is also an area of priority for India’s development. Improving access to Southeast Asia from our North Eastern States benefits both our people,” Modi said. The two leaders also agreed to commence the negotiation on the Air Service Agreement. They agreed that the completion of the Highway and the Agreement will facilitate not only trade but also people-to-people linkages, the joint statement said. Both the Prime Ministers proposed that India-Myanmar-Thailand Friendship Car Rally will be organised in November this year. Thailand would extend assistance as seen appropriate to make it a success. On regional cooperation, the two leaders expressed their desire to further enhance the ASEAN-India Strategic Partnership. The Prime Ministers noted that the establishment of the ASEAN Community last year has been a historic event and hoped that it will be an important step towards greater integration and prosperity in all dimensions. With a view to underscore the significance of sub-regional frameworks, the Prime Ministers viewed that developing the Mekong-India Economic Corridor would complement ASEAN well.

DIMAPUR/AHMEDABAD, JUN 18 (NPN): Acting on the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi of inter-state exchange of police forces to improve co- ordination, given during the National DGP meet at Dhordo in Kutch held between December 18 to 20, 2015 -- for the first time two companies of state reserve police forces from North Eastern states of Nagaland and Assam will be deployed during the Rath Yatra bandobast. According to a report in Times of India, senior police officials said these two companies which will consists of about 200 personnel will include two platoons of women police personnel also. It is noteworthy that 139th Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath will be taken out on the 18 kilometer route in the city on July 7. Eid could also fall on the same day and hence extra precautions are being taken by the city police to ensure peace in the city. “During the DGP meet at Dhordo, Prime Minister while addressing the senior police officials from across the state had laid emphasis on improving co-ordination between police forces of different states. He had said that for effective policing forces from different states should be inter exchanged to become familiar with each other” said a senior police official who had attended the DGP meet.
Reaction to NSCN (I-M) caution on ACAUT Dimapur, Jun 18 (NPN): A social media spearheaded- ‘Concerned Citizens of Nagaland’(CCN) g roup, through its media cell, has come out in full support for the citizens of Wokha on their reaffirmation of ACAUT’s October 31,2013 resolution for ‘One Govt One Tax’ and applauded ACAUT Wokha Unit and Yikhum Village Council for their “brave exemplary action” towards other villages in Nagaland and appealed to other villages to follow suit. In an email sent to media, CCN media cell said it was astonished by NSCN(I-M) terming ACAUT’s stand as “extreme provocation”. It said it was an “insult to the wisdom and sentiments of the citizens” as no one was “ in hallucination that such mass of intellectuals can be provoked by anyone”. CCN opined that as NPGs voice “silent whispers of the Nagas to the Indian government for freedom”; ACAUT also voices out people’s “ silent whispers against corruption and unabated taxation” adding all these were inborn voices
and decisions of “true Naga patriot and not a by product of any provocation.” C C N sa id bra nding ACAUT was “an insult to the same people” whose silent whispers for Naga freedom the NSCN(I-M) was voicing out otherwise, it was portraying Nagas as being brainwashed. It said voice of the people “in the form of ACAUT” should not be considered “nuisance” and any group unless “ it is a dictatorial form of government” and which claimed to represent people and such group should lend their ear to the people. CCN questioned the term, “banned movement” on ACAUT since ‘ban’ was alien to Naga culture as it meant imposition and curtailment of freedom of speech and expression of public. Naga citizens rights and voice should be taken into consideration without looking down on citizens’ rights for ‘One Government One Tax’ as “nuisance or anti-national Nagas” said CCN. It said warning of action against ACAUT was
threatening Nagas and which was “unethical and unacceptable” since by virtue, Nagas are a warrior race who don’t have a culture of fear who don’t bow to threats. Pointing to the rejoinders by NTC and CNTC over the Naga people’s mandate, CCN said it fully agreed with the two bodies that NNC has the mandate of people through the Plebiscite of 1951 and therefore, no group can claim so unless another mandate was held. It therefore expressed dismay over the NSCN(I-M) claim of being the sole authorised organisation to collect tax and the silence of other NPGs as meaning assent to that claim. CCN also questioned NSCN over the issue of ‘naturalised citizens’ of ACAUT members when newspaper reports revealed “Non Nagas such as suspected illegal Bangladeshi immigrants as cadres”. Lastly, CCN said they were surprised at the silence of some apex bodies over the issue when their priority should be truth, unity and justice for the land and people.
No threat to polio-free status of India: WHO NEW DELHI, JUN 18 (AGENCIES): Amid concerns over resurfacing of polio cases in India, the WHO on Saturday said there is “no threat” to the polio-free status of all South East Asian region countries, including India, and the detection of a rare strain of the crippling disease is “not unusual”. Noting that all the countries including India maintain a “high vigil” for the detection of the disease, the World Health Organization’s South-East Asia Regional Office (WHO SEARO) said that no child has been afflicted by wild poliovirus since the last case was reported from West Bengal in January, 2011. “All countries in the region continue to maintain a very high vigil for poliovirus detection. As part of this, environmental surveillance collection of samples from sewage is being conducted regularly from 30 sites across seven states in India,” it said in a statement.
DIMAPUR, JUN 18 (NPN): Reacting sharply to the statement made by NPF Peren division against senior advocate and former advocate general of Nagaland, K.N. Balagopal-- “for stooping so low to come to Peren” to take up the case pertaining to chief minister T.R. Zeliang’s education qualification, NPCC said overlooking the fact that Peren was an important constituent of Nagaland, from which incumbent chief minister represents, such comments was an insult to the people of Peren. For this, NPCC working president P. Ayang Aonok, in a press release, demanded that the NPF apologies to the people of Peren. On the allegation that the K.N. Balgopal and his team had to stoop down to appear before a junior magistrate, NPCC said when all the Courts were temples of justice, such comments were an attack on the Court. Pointing out that the Supreme Court had declined the relief in appeal against the order passed by the Guahati High Court, Kohima bench directing the magistrate to hear the case on point of ‘limitation’, NPCC accused Zeliang of hiding the order and pretending to be invincible. NPCC said “he should at least now realise the famous words of Thomas Fowler, ‘That no one is above the law’, and rather, he owes an apology to the people instead of attacking the complainant and making aspersions on their counsel and also belittling the people of Peren”. While taking note of the Judicial Magistrate Peren cautioning Zeliang’s counsel that “no further adjournment will be given and the case will be heard on 28th June 2016”, NPCC alleged that due to this reason, “Zeliang approached the Supreme Court which refused to interfere with the High Court’s Order and thereby giving a huge setback for the chief minister”. While stating that the chief minister’s days appear to be numbered, NPCC said in the event the Magistrate convicts him, Zeliang’s nomination papers would be deemed rejected from the date of filing of the same. On June 14 last, NPCC said that the counsel (K.N. Balgopal) for the complainant, had pointed out to the court whether “T.R. Zeliang, in the 2018 Assembly Elections, will dare to write in his affidavit before the Election Commission in the column pertaining to educational qualifications that he has passed B.A. Exam in 1979 in the light of the fact that the University and college authority have already furnished documents to show that Mr. Zeliang failed in all the subjects in the year 1979 and didn’t appear in 1980”? It said that the High Court had on April 25, 2016 “refused to close the case against Zeliang”, which was referred back to the Judicial Magistrate, Peren, to be heard on the point of limitation. (Cont’d on p-7)

larifying to the report published in the local dailies that the Supreme Court (SC) had rejected/dismissed chief minister, T.R. Zeliang’s petition, NPF Legal Cell said that “the heading itself is ambiguous and total misrepresentation of the Supreme Court Order”. In a press note, NPF convenor legal cell, Achumbemo Kikon clarified that the SC in its order dated June 15, 2016 had “directed the Trial Court to determine the question of limitation and for that purpose the petitioner (CM) need not appear in person and can appear through his counsel”. Kikon said that Court went on to state in its order that “it will be open to the petitioner (CM) to raise all contentions and in case the petitioner is aggrieved by the decision of the Trial Court, he (CM) is at liberty to seek legal remedy in accordance with law”. As such, the legal cell made clear that the said SLP was not dismissed but sent back to the Trial Court with clear directives. Asserting that, the order could not be construed as dismissed, the cell rather said, “it was a big relief for the chief minister as the opposite party kept on insisting that he should appear in person inside the court room”. The Supreme Court order “has vindicated the CM to a large extent as the directive given by the Supreme Court of India will definitely be the main guiding principle while deciding the case”. It further reminded that the SC order had actually strengthened CM’s contentions and that there was no reason at all for the opposite group to be jubilant.
Probe over illegal taxation at Lahorijan check gate Correspondents
DIPHU/BOKAJAN, JUN 18: Deputy Commissioner (DC) Karbi Anglong, Mukul Gogoi, has ordered for a magisterial probe into illegal taxation at Inter-State Forest Check Gate and at a private weigh bridge on national highway-36 at Lahorijan along Nagaland-Assam border. The order came out after a team of journalists from Diphu and Bokajan revealed that illegal taxation has been going on unabated in the two gates at the very nose of the police and district administration. The journalist team found that the staffs of Inter-State Forest Check Gate collect Rs 200-300 from each truck passing through it while the staffs of the weighbridge collect Rs 200-500 forcibly from the truckers.
It may be mentioned that a weighbridge run by a private concern M/S AK Weigh Bridge on NH-36 has allegedly harassing truckers by way of forcible collection. It was alleged that weighbridge has been extorting truckers according to the wheels and size of the trucks that pass through it. Such illegal collection often victimise many Nagaland and Manipur bound truckers. Even as there was a border out post (BOP) near the weighbridge, no police personnel come forward to help the truckers. “The staffs of the weighbridge collect money in the name of weighing the commercial vehicles. However, they never weigh any vehicle. The drivers who are reluctant to pay the taxes have to face awkward situation in the gate,” said Md Ali Hussain, a Manipur-bound truck driver. K Y M C

KOHIMA, JUN 18 (NPN): Underlining the benefits of rearing silk worm in the state, it was revealed that the state produced 345 Metric Ton (MT) cocoon and 305.30 MT silk yarns during 2015-16. This was presented by deputy director of sericulture, Asangla Alinger during the valedictory function of the six-day “Eri Silk Spinning Training Programme on Motorized Spinning Machine under State Plan” organized by District Sericulture office Kohima at Gorkha Panchayat Hall, Saturday evening. Alinger also pointed out
the yarn from eri silk could fetch minimum floor price of Rs. 2,200 per Kg. Appraising that Central Silk Board (CSB) is giving importance to North East, especially to Nagaland for its favorable topography, land and climate in rearing silkworm, she said that four types of silkworm - Eri, Mulberry, Muga and Tussar could be reared only in the state, which also has short gestation period. Informing that harvest could be done six to five times in a year in hot weather and three to four times in cold weather, Alinger said that motorized spinning machine given by CSB could produce
higher production with finer yarn, proper twist and more portable, which could produce five to six Kgs of yarn per month. Speaking as the chief guest, deputy commissioner Kohima, Rovilatuo Mor, IAS lamented that in spite of the state’s rich biodiversity, economic mindset is weak with no clear cut economic strategy. He therefore, urged the trainees to take up sericulture whole-heartedly and suggested to get specialized in one field so as to produce large production and finer product. Rovilatuo further appraised that finer product has
potential for export, which could in turn uplift economy of the state as well as the individual. He urged the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the motorized spinning machine so that the department would also be encouraged to serve the people better. The deputy commissioner distributed the spinning machine free of cost to 20 trainees. Trainees also delivered voluntary speech, while vote of thanks was delivered by Yingsungbeni Ngully. The programme was chaired by DSO Kohima, Mhianizoto Meyase.

KOHIMA, JUN 18 (NPN): Deputy commissioner Kohima and chairman district child protection committee (DCPC), Rovilatuo Mor, IAS lamented that Nagas take pride as Christian society, however remain silent when child rights are abused and remain indifferent even when children are ill treated in various forms. He was speaking as the guest speaker at the “Sensitization programme on Child Rights and its importance” organized by District Child Protection Unit Kohima at
zonal council hall, Friday. Rovilatuo urged the gathering to raise the issue on abuse of child rights, as it is the bounden duty of the society and also the responsibility of the church forum to give proper projection of child rights. Pointing out that child labor was still part of society in form of domestic worker, he said that those children should be protected and guaranteed with equal rights as child. Rovilatuo lauded that children are the future of the society and nation. He said that therefore, for a prosperous society it is required to produce
upright, health and vibrant children. Assam student robbed of cash inside PG facility
NEW DELHI, JUN 18 (PTI): A 20-year-old journalism student from Assam was robbed of cash and other valuables by three men who forcefully entered the premises of her PG facility in south Delhi’s Vasant Kunj area and threatened her room mates saying that they would come back for more money, police said today. The incident has triggered panic among people from the northeast community living in the area. One of the girls living in the PG facility was so traumatised that she left for her hometown today. Delhi Social Welfare Minister Sandeep Kumar said the city government was looking into the issue and that police was investigating it thoroughly. The incident took place around 10.15 AM yesterday when three girls, all mass communication students of Tezpur Central University, were present in the paying guest facility at Kishangarh local-
ity of Vasant Kunj and three men approached them on the pretext of donation, a senior official said. When they agreed and loosened the grip over the bolt of the door, the men forcefully entered into the flat and snatched the purse of one of them. They made away with cash Rs 2,000. “As they left, they threatened us saying they would come again and asked us to keep more cash ready. We called up the police immediately and a police team came to investigate the matter,” the complainant said. All three girls are pursuing internship with leading media houses in Delhi-NCR. “A case is being registered. Efforts are on to track down the accused,” additional DCP (South) Nupur Prasad said. The trio were dressed like people from a particular community and they were seeking donation for some religious cause. It is suspected that they are a gang operating
in south Delhi localities. “We informed our parents after the incident, following which the father of one of my room mates asked her to return to Assam immediately. She left today without finishing her internship,” the complainant said. She further said there is no security arrangement in the women PG facility. “It is hard to believe how just three men could forcefully enter the premises of a women PG.” Delhi government’s NE cell member J Maivio said, “These kind of things are common and the strategy is tried and tested. Sometimes these miscreants come in fake police uniform in the pretext of work.” “People from the northeast are extremely vulnerable since they have virtually no support system in the city. And justice is meted out rarely. Charge sheets have been filed in handful of cases,” he added.

Mizoram to start peace talks with Hmar terror outfit AIZAWL, JUN 17 (IANS): Mizoram government said on Friday it will soon start peace talks with Manipur-based terror outfit Hmar People’s Convention (Democratic) or HPC (D). The HPC (D) has resorted to violence since 1994 to push its demand for an autonomous council in Mizoram for the Hmar tribals. “The Mizoram government would soon initiate talks with HPC (D) militant outfit. However, we would not concede the demand for a separate autonomous district council,” Home Minister R. Lalzirliana said here at a conference of the Mizoram Police Service Association. The people of the state were against formation of an autonomous body on ethnic lines, the minister said. “We have sent feelers through local leaders to the HPC (D). The formal official initiatives would also be undertaken soon,” Lalzirliana said. Earlier, negotiations between the state government and HPC (D) leadership got stuck in 2013 on the issue of extension of the period of suspension of operations. Lalzirliana had earlier
said that no peace talks can be initiated with HPC-D unless the outfit eschews violence. Mizoram is the first and only state in India which got Rs 182.45 crore from the central government in 2000-01 as “Peace Bonus” for keeping peace after decades of insurgency. That record was shattered on March 28 last year when the HPC-D ambushed a police party in Mizoram and killed three personnel and seriously wounded six others. The state shares unfenced border of 404 km with Myanmar and 318 km with Bangladesh where terrorists occasionally take shelter after committing crime in Mizoram. Barring stray violence committed by HPC or HPC (D), the state has largely been peaceful since 1986 when the Centre signed the Mizoram Accord with the Mizo National Front (MNF), which had been engaged for two decades in a secessionist movement. As MNF’s founder leader Laldenga, a former Indian Army Havildar, became chief minister and his group took to mainstream politics

No untoward incident was reported during the bandh hour from any parts of the state. Jisha murder case: Accused sent to judicial custody ALUVA (KERALA) JUN 18 (IANS): An Assamese youth, who was arrested in connection with the murder of law student Jisha, was on Friday remanded to 14 days’ judicial custody. However, the victim’s father has demanded a CBI investigation into the case. Accused Amiyur ul Islam was nabbed from Tamil Nadu near Palakkad border three days back. On Friday he was produced before the Magistrate in Perumbavoor, who remanded him to 14 days’ judicial custody. Islam was later taken to a prison in Ernakulam. The court directed that the accused be provided a lawyer to defend himself and the police should not ill-treat Islam. During his production before the court, police had taken precautions to keep the media at bay. Islam was made to wear a helmet and was asked to lie down on the floor of a police bus in which he was transported. According to police, Islam had visited Jisha’s home on April 28 morning when they had an altercation. He returned again in the afternoon in an inebriated condition and raped Jisha before murdering her. Director General of Police Loknath Behra, who questioned Islam along with the
police probe team said even though the accused has been arrested, some more time would be needed to piece together all the evidences. Meanwhile, Jisha’s father Pappu told reporters that he is not satisfied with the way police has concluded that Islam was the culprit. “I do not believe anyone. Both the ruling party and the opposition are protecting the real culprit and they blaming this man. Only a CBI probe will bring out the real truth.” Pappu said.

NPF in semi-conscious state, says NPCC
DIMAPUR, JUN 18 (NPN): Asserting Naga People’s Front (NPF) has not understood the predicament on the ongoing political negotiation, the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) on Saturday said that the “peace accord” was signed on July 25, 1997 and it was going to be 19 years, which it described was “almost a generation’s time.” In a press release, NPCC president K. Therie said the NPF should be able to assess the difficulties of the negotiating parties and the impact and probable reactions and should intervene to save the situations. However, Therie said “they are in semi-conscious state and only know how to corrupt.” He said NPF bluffed people for over a decade by saying “Talk is in the right direction”. But today, Theire said “they admit they don’t know the content of 3rd August 2015 Accord/Framework Agreement. Who should know?” Maintaining that the Congress never opposed solution rather initiated agreements and peace talks “while the NPF has nothing to show”, Therie reiterated that Congress would support if it was good for the people but cannot give a “blank cheque.” “I am repeating these again for the ears and eyes of NPF for there are some Thomases in the NPF who still allege that NPCC is against solution,” he said. NPCC president said the Congress believed “Nagaland political problem” was above all political parties and that “we all need to contribute in finding peaceful solution.” Therie said NPCC has followed a laid down policy adopted in a resolution at Pfutsero by its forerunner party NNO in 1972 “to endeavour to solve the political problem through peaceful and constitutional means.” Alleging that NPF leaders lacked courage to venture or take responsibilities

unlike “our founding Naga leaders”, Therie said DAN’s common minimum program of its election manifesto in 2003 vouched “to secure a negotiated settlement of Indo-Naga Political problem through peaceful means”. But, in a major shift, he said the NPF adopted a policy “to facilitate and support the ongoing talk”. “The act is nothing more than betrayal of trust,” Therie said. Further, he said state government has no opinion for the people they represent; in the political solution that would impact every citizen’s present and future life. “It means they have abdicated their authority of self-determination and protecting the life and property of the people as is provided in the Constitution. This is truly unfortunate,” said Therie. Stating that it was wrong for NPF to say that past agreements have failed, he said “They have achieved State Assembly that determines our future and the precious Art 371A. We have achieved near plebiscite demand. Prime Minister of India does not make any decision for Nagaland anymore.” He said the achievement of Congress and its forerunner party was the only thing every subject of Nagaland was benefitting including the NPF. Affirming that NPCC cannot and would not abandon the people of Nagaland, Therie said, “We hear the voice of the Church, the Youth, the ACAUT, CNTC, NTC, Tribal Hohos and other organizations.” Alleging that NPF has a say in protecting its own subjects but the people were left by themselves, unfenced, NPCC president remarked: “Our people have suffered enough. The crying of the people cannot be ignored anymore. People are protesting in the streets. We are conscious to the writing on the wall. It speaks to our conscience saying people are tired.”
Mallya seen at book launch in London; envoy walks out
LONDON/NEW DELHI, JUN 18 (IANS): Beleaguered industrialist Vijay Mallya, wanted in a money laundering case and declared a proclaimed offender, was spotted at a book launch event in London that was also attended by Indian High Commissioner Navtej Sarna, sparking a row back home. But the government on Saturday clarified that the envoy left the event immediately after seeing the fugitive liquor baron among the audience. The government washed its hands off the event at the London School of Economics on Thursday and said the function to release the book, “Mantras for Success: India’s Greatest CEOs Tell You How to Win” by author Suhel Seth and journalist Sunny Sen, was not hosted by the Indian High Commission. “The list of invitations for the event was determined by LSE. They have written to the High Commissioner that Mallya was not on their list,” the External Affairs Ministry said in a statement in New Delhi. The statement said the LSE had widely advertised the event through social media and its attendees were not required to register in advance. Sarna was invited to participate in the discussion about the book. “When the high commissioner (Sarna) spotted Mallya in the audience he left the stage and venue immediately after making his comments and without waiting for the interactive session,” the statement said. It said that there were two events on the day -- the book launch by UK Minister of State for Universities and Science Jo Johnson and
Vijay Mallya later a reception at the High Commission for select guests. The book launch event was organised by the 100 Foot
Journey Club -- a collaboration between the Indian High Commission and LSE. “Mallya was certainly not an invitee to the reception at the High Commission...and was not present,” the statement said. Seth, one of the authors of the book, in a series of tweets insisted that that it was an “open event”. “No specific invitations (were given). Anyone could attend,” Seth said, denying that Mallya was among those invited. But the presence of Mallya at the book launch sparked off political controversy amid frenzied social media reactions.

H Y D E R A BA D, J U N 1 8 (PTI): Creating history, Avani Chaturvedi, Bhawana Kanth and Mohana Singh today became the first women fighter pilots to be formally commissioned by the Indian Air Force. Batting for gender parity in the armed forces, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, who was chief guest at the combined graduation ceremony at Air Force Academy, Dundigal on the city outskirts, termed the event as a “milestone” as it also the first time that women have been given a combat role. “It is a golden letter day...,” he said, asserting that “step-by-step”, “total gender parity” will be achieved in the armed forces in the coming years. “There are technical and administrative difficulties which we are likely to face in
them as fighter pilots. However, only three female trainees were selected for the fighter stream. Parrikar, who reviewed the passing out parade, conferred ‘President’s Commission’ on behalf the President to 130 Flight Cadets, including 22 women trainees, who were commissioned as Flying Officers. Father’s Day Special
Nagaland Post Vol. XXVI NO. 191 Dimapur, sunday, June 19, 2016
What dads should be
A
s various churches observe Father’s Day on the third Sunday of June every year, it would be helpful in reminding fathers about their roles and responsibilities towards their wives, children, society and most of all, God. Though there is no specific instruction to celebrate such a day in the Bible, yet it became part of the calendar event when in 1924 US President Calvin Coolidge made it a national event to “establish more intimate relations between fathers and their children and to impress upon fathers the full measure of their obligations. In the early days, fatherhood denoted fathers who played a dominant role in the lives of their children, assuming a broad range of responsibilities defining and supervising the children’s development. In the ancient Hebrew family, the father had the maximum authority and was accorded the most respect of all the family members. He was to rule as the head of his wife, to love, provide and protect her. A Hebrew father also played the role of the priest-in bringing his family to worship and honour the living God. He was also a teacher, guide and bread earner. Often the biblical teaching on the father as the head of the wife has been misinterpreted to mean male dominance. This is not the truth; for the Bible clearly says that a husband must love his wife as he loves himself. They are equal partners in the God ordained marriage. Furthermore, while these definitions once implied biological fathers only, with the rapid changes in the family structure they came to include non-biological fathers as well. There is no place for chauvinism in the bible but partnership, honour and respect. With far reaching socio-economic changes during the past decades, the concepts of parenthood are evolving. More fathers than ever are participating in their children’s nurturing and upbringing. Modern dads have a closer bond with their children than they had with their own fathers, according to new research. A study discovered more than six out of ten dads believe they enjoy a better, more supportive and hands-on relationship with their children than they experienced. Modern fathers also make more effort to spend time with their children, communicate more frequently and effectively with them and create interests that can be commonly shared. The study also found close to seven out of ten dads said they play a ‘bigger part’ in their kids’ lives than their own dad did. And a further seven in 10 said they were responsible for organising days out for the family. When asked to look back at their own relationships with their fathers, 60 percent of the dads surveyed said their own father was too busy working to be fully involved in family life, while a further 30 percent said their dad ‘showed little emotion’ towards them. The role of the father in a family has been ordained by God. In essence, it is in keeping the commitment towards responsible parenthood where the man leads and includes his wife in keeping their priorities right in God’s sight, fulfil their duties towards God, themselves, their families and human society. Today, the term fatherhood is used interchangeably with the term ‘fathering’ which includes, beyond the procreative act itself, all the childrearing roles, activities, duties, and responsibilities that fathers are expected to perform and fulfil.
DailyDevotion Keep Recognizing Jesus …Peter…walked on the water to go to Jesus. But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid… —Matthew 14:29-30 The wind really was boisterous and the waves really were high, but Peter didn’t see them at first. He didn’t consider them at all; he simply recognized his Lord, stepped out in recognition of Him, and “walked on the water.” Then he began to take those things around him into account, and instantly, down he went. Why couldn’t our Lord have enabled him to walk at the bottom of the waves, as well as on top of them? He could have, yet neither could be done without Peter’s continuing recognition of the Lord Jesus. We step right out with recognition of God in some things, then self-consideration enters our lives and down we go. If you are truly recognizing your Lord, you have no business being concerned about how and where He engineers your circumstances. The things surrounding you are real, but when you look at them you are immediately overwhelmed, and even unable to recognize Jesus. Then comes His rebuke, “…why did you doubt?” (Matthew 14:31). Let your actual circumstances be what they may, but keep recognizing Jesus, maintaining complete reliance upon Him. If you debate for even one second when God has spoken, it is all over for you. Never start to say, “Well, I wonder if He really did speak to me?” Be reckless immediately— totally unrestrained and willing to risk everything— by casting your all upon Him. You do not know when His voice will come to you, but whenever the realization of God comes, even in the faintest way imaginable, be determined to recklessly abandon yourself, surrendering everything to Him. It is only through abandonment of yourself and your circumstances that you will recognize Him. You will only recognize His voice more clearly through recklessness— being willing to risk your all.

Yim oday is the day we can all appreciate our fathers a little more and not shy away from telling them we love them to bits. We are quite expressive when it comes to showing love to our mothers but a little reluctant and awkward towards our fathers. Why so? No matter how old we get, we are not embarrassed to ask our fathers for a little financial support or help us get what we want. Then why do we hesitate to show a little bit of love to them. Why don’t we all call our fathers and tell them we love and really appreciate them, our role models since the time we actually knew what role model meant! We get used to the virtues of our fathers that we forget to actually look and learn from the principles they have set. So it’s time we actually retrospect and literally start walking in their footsteps.
Seeing them sacrifice everything just to keep us happy and content in life is a lesson for us to also be just as selfless as they are. Watching them love our mothers and really stand by their vows ‘till death do us apart’ makes it easier for us girls to look for all the right qualities in men and how we should be treated. Seeing them work hard to provide for us instills the value of dedication and determination for success. Patience is a quality we should take up from them, with all the mistakes we make they just wait no 619matter how long it takes for us to learn from it. We have all sat and wondered why our fathers refuse to show any emotions during difficult circumstances as we and our moms go hysterical, well, off course they might be breaking down and be confused too, but their main goal is to overcome the
storm with perseverance by shielding us and staying brave for the family and weshould definitely adopt the quality of sturdiness and bravery from them. Generosity, kindness and compassion are attributes we should acquire from our fathers, be it helping others in the community or lending a hand to people in need. We are all here today, some of us with success achieved and some still dreamers but one thing all of us have in common is the little support system that is our fathers. The day we learn to walk, we had a hand holding and balancing us as we took our first steps till today they push us a little bit towards freedom and fulfill whatever goals we have in life whilst watching over to catch us anytime we fall. Sorting out priorities in life is something we should take up from our fathers, a once upon a time carefree men who changed to

Representation on National Highway 29
n inviting a reference to the matter broached above in the subject, the Angami Youth Organization (AYO) like to make this communiqué to your concern authority impressing your perusal and necessary prompt action thereof. The National Highways passing through Nagaland (Particularly NH 29 from Dimapur-KohimaKhuzama) invariably serve as the lifeline/route for our State. While the quality unkeep condition of this road as well as all other artery roads are imperative for the well being of all, it is very unfortunate that the persistent deplorable condition of the Highway and other roads in and around the State have become a perpetual matter that attracts unprecedented disparagement from all
sections of our society against the legal guardians and authorities of the roads, i,e., the BRO/BRTF and the State government. It is obvious that the existing highway (NH-29)) had its shape and got transformed into its present status from a primitive like trekking path in the times of yore, to a horse/ bullock path during the colonial rules, into a single lane road and into the present status. The irony is, while the original status of the road, the designs and grading executed during the colonial rule were done with excellent engineering works, this highway on the fringes of the country, from post independent era to till date, definitely and literally never got its base, size and strength altered/ modified nor improved to
the standard befitting a NH, that could cater and withstand the increasing volume/ weight/ force and pressure of vehicles on them as we experience today. While an array of factors and subjects contributes to the woes of the NH (right from implementation of policies and rules to ground work execution, unstable natural terrain, being decrepit, socio-ethnic matters, etc), one main factor creating damaging havoc on the roads (NH) definitely prove to be of the heavy vehicles plying with loads beyond sustainable weights and pressures our existing highway/roads can withstand. The phenomenal raise in the volume of heavy vehicles plying on this small decrepit highway, of trucks running on 10-18
wheels, ferrying goods weighing to the volume of more than 40 tons, which in all likelihood will not be permissible under established rules and in our context, have become a regular sight, running and crushing out the life of the roads prematurely and instantly. Taking on the role of father sincerely
Sir,
Many would be grieving the loss of their fathers on this very special day but truly God would ease their sorrows as they celebrate the occassion. For all the fathers who have been the guiding factor in their children’s lives, you have excelled in your earthly duty as entrusted to you by God. For the fathers who are yet to comprehend their responsibilities, may this day remind you all to renew yourselves and take on your roles more sincerely for the sake of your children. May God bless the fathers on this day. Have a very blessed father’s day. Benthunglo K Lotha, Duncan Basti, Dimapur

NPCC stated that the “Court had conceded Locus Standi and Jurisdiction to the complainants in this case leaving only the issue of Limitation open to be heard before the Magistrate, before proceeding with the case”. It further reminded the supporters of T.R. Zeliang that they had “no right to attack the Congress party for voicing out on the issue of dishonesty”. Rather, NPCC has asked the NPF leadership “to see the writings on the wall instead of the Ostrich hiding its head in the sand and can now expect major political upheavals in the state”. Meanwhile, NPCC further noted the Judicial Magistrate Peren cautioned counsel for Mr. Zeliang that, ‘no further adjournment will be given and the case will be heard on 28th June 2016’. It is with this background that Mr. Zeliang approached the Supreme Court which refused to interfere with the High Court’s Order and thereby giving a huge setback for the Chief Minister. His days appear to be numbered as the Chief Minister as in the event the Magistrate convicts him, then in accordance with law, his nomination papers will be deemed rejected from the date of filing of the same.

New Delhi, Jun 18 (IANS): Thailand on Friday said it would further facilitate investments by Indian firms in the Southeast Asian nation and resolved to increase Thai investments into India, following the first meeting of the IndiaThailand Joint Business Forum here during the ongoing visit of Thai Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha. “I am ready to waive rules that are obstacles so as to facilitate Indian business. Thailand would like Indian investors to come and invest in our priority sectors like information technology, pharmaceuticals, auto-components, and machinery,” General Chan-o-Cha told a gathering of business leaders from both countries at an event here hosted jointly by the three industry chambers FICCI, CII and Assocham. “Besides, there are many opportunities for Indian business in the wider Asean (Association for Southeast Asian Nations) region”. Thailand can be like a forward base for Indian investors to Asean,” the Thai Prime Minister, who is on a visit to India, said. The Thailand Prime Minister, who held delegation level talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier in the day, invited Indian investments under the country’s cluster development policy.

Taxes (CBDT), however, said in a statement yesterday that the Prime Minister had “asked them to knock on the doors of the non-tax payers so as to increase the number of taxpayers to at least 10 crore”. Addressing the inaugural session of the two-day annual conference of tax administrators on Thursday, the Prime Minister had asked taxmen to legitimately aspire to have 10 crore taxpayers within the tax base as against 5.43 crore tax payers currently. The conference was closed to media and Modi’s remarks were relayed by Minister of State for Finance Jayant Sinha and Adhia yesterday. At the end of the two-day conference yesterday, Adhia briefed reporters, when he referred to Sinha talking about Prime Minister stating that out of about 25 crore households in the country, there may be 14-15 crore agriculture households. Stating that this left 10 crore households, Adhia said, “Now, there is a scope for expansion, widening of tax net out of that 10 crore. He (Prime Minister) did not say that we should actually get 10 crore.” “It is impossible to get 10 crore of taxpayers in this country because many of the non-agriculture households may also be below poverty line staying in urban areas. So, it is not possible to tax all the 10 crore people,” he had said.
New Delhi, Jun 18 (IANS): A consortium led by state-run Indian Oil Corp (IOC) oil companies IOC, BPCL and OIL signed an agreement on Friday to buy 23.9 per cent stake in Russia’s Vankor oil field from Rosneft for $2.1 billion, IOC said in a statement. The agreement between IOC, Oil India and Bharat PetroResources, a subsidiary of Bharat Petroleum Corp Aand state-run Rosneft was signed on Friday in St.Petersburg, being visited by India’s Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan at the head of a delegation to the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) which was held from Thursday to Friday. Indian explorer ONGC Videsh Ltd has Arecently picked up 15 per cent stake in the Vankor fields for $1.27 billion. “Indian consortium of IOC,BPCL and OIL signed the agreement;earlier OVL had acquired 15 per cent stakes in Vankor,” Pradhan said in a tweet

New Delhi, Jun 18 (PTI): In the wake of confusion over whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi had set a target of doubling the income tax base to 10 crore, government today came out with a statement correcting an earlier press release and saying no specific target has been prescribed. In a corrigendum, an official release today referred to its press release yesterday in which in the first para it was stated that the Prime Minister had asked the tax authorities on Thursday to take action against non-tax payers so as to increase the number of taxpayers to at least 10 crore. “In this regard it is clarified that though the Prime Minister asked the Income Tax department to widen the tax base and take suitable action against the non-filers and tax evaders, no specific target to expand the tax base to 10 crore was prescribed. “The original press release dated June 17 may please be treated as revised to this extent. The mistake in the press release dated June 17 was inadvertent, which is regretted,” said the Department of Revenue release today. Yesterday, Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia sought to contextualise the Prime Minister’s statement saying he was talking about “scope for expansion” of the tax base to 10 crore but he added getting to that mark is “impossible”. The Central Board of Direct
Minister for Trade, Industry and Energy Hyunghwan Joo said that both sides should enhance their institutional foundations of trade and investments “most notably by upgrading the CEPA”. Since the implementation of the pact, volumes of bilateral trade has increased significantly, he said. However, he added that “our current CEPA suffers (because) of low utilisation rate due to complex rules of origin and low level of concessions”. These remarks assumes significance as South Korea, with which India had trade deficit of about USD 10 billion in 2015-16, has sought widening of the scope of FTA by including more products such as machinery and certain kinds of steel products under the pact. Upgrading of a free trade pact involves reopening of the agreement and fresh negotiations with regard to duty-free access of the new products.

New Delhi, Jun 18 (IANS): Alluding to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s advice to tax administrators on the need to enhance the tax base, a top industry body stressed here on Saturday that all efforts are needed to improve the tax to GDP ratio. “Given the development priorities of the nation, it is important that all efforts are made to improve the tax to GDP ratio,” Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Ficci) President Harshavardhan Neotia said in a statement. “The government needs more resources to effectively deliver the basic services to the economically weaker sections of society as well as invest more in areas like health, education and physical infrastructure,” Neotia said. “We hope that by leveraging technology and other sources of collecting information such as bank and credit card transactions, the revenue department will be able to garner more resources as well as bring more non-filers within the ambit of the tax net,” he said. The industry body suggested that as a first step towards widening of the tax base, the government may consider making filing of income above a certain threshold mandatory.

NEW DELHI, Jun 18 (PTI): India and South Korea will review their free trade agreement (FTA) tomorrow with a view to strengthening it further. Both the countries implemented the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) in January 2010, under which the two nations liberalised trade norms for each other. Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said both the countries should do everything to further strengthen the CEPA and will deliberate on various aspects of the pact. “We hope to do an intensive exercise so that it can be concluded in the favour of both the countries. It will require quite a few assessments of the benefits derived from both the countries under the existing CEPA,” she said. I have always made it clear that my ultimate home is in the realm of ideas. The approaching end of my three year term, and of my leave at the University of Chicago, was therefore a good time to reflect on how much we had accomplished.” Stating that he will be returning to the US university, from where he is on a sabbatical, Rajan listed his unfinished agenda as seeing a monetary policy panel in place to broadly guide the central bank, and a clean-up of banks’ balance sheets. Much speculation had gone into a possible second term for Rajan, hailed by many as the best governor the central bank could have possibly had on its board during the difficult times India was going through, but also with some share of critics.

Mumbai, Jun 18 (IANS): Ending months of speculation, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Raghuram Rajan has formally told his colleagues that he is not keen on a second term at the helm of the country’s central bank and would return to academia when his tenure ends in September. This was conveyed in a 888-word letter addressed to the RBI staff, a copy of which was obtained by IANS. Reflecting on his term as the 23rd governor of the central bank since September 2013, Rajan said the agenda he pursued was to help nurse India back on the path of recovery first and then growth. He went on to allude that while much was accomplished, a part of that task remained a work in progress. “While I was open to seeing these developments through, on due reflec-

India strongly believes that its economic growth must drive and bring benefit to its neighbours,” he said Modi said the modern tools of communication have enabled 1.25 billion people of India and the friendly people of Sri Lanka to “join in this celebration”.
Indian-American running for Congress seat in New Jersey The 7th Congressional District of New Jersey is said to be a strong Republican bastion. The party has retained this seat for the last 100 years, except for six years between 1975-1981. However, Jacobs, hopes to turn the tide this election cycle given that his rival incumbent Lance is supporting Donald Trump. In a Congressional district having a sizeable population of foreign born, extreme views are unlikely to sail through, he noted. “It is ironic to me that Leonard Lance has endorsed Donald Trump, because Trump has preached out against the type of politician that Leonard Lance is,” Jacob told local Daily Record. “When they arrived in 1986, they had three things with them. Just USD 20 in their pockets, hearts full of hope and six-months-old me in their arms,” he said. Today his parents own and operate a thriving business.
Washington, Jun 18 (PTI): A 30-year-old IndianAmerican Democratic social worker is running for the US House of Representatives from New Jersey which is known to be a strong Republican bastion. Peter Jacob, a staunch supporter of Senator Bernie Sanders from Vermont, was elected unopposed in the Democratic primary on June 7. He is seeking to unseat incumbent Leonard Lance of the Republican party who has represented Congressional District 7 of New Jersey since 2009. This is the same Congressional district from where Upendra Chivukula – the first Indian-American to be elected to the New Jersey State Assembly – tried his luck in 2012 and lost to Lance by more than 50,000 votes. Another Indian-Americans Thomas Abraham ran as an independent in 2008 and got less than one per cent of the votes.
Trump unfit for holding public office: Harris
“After a wait of nearly 20 years your applause and cheers will once again rekindle the soul of Duraiappah stadium. Even while we are sitting thousands of kilometres away in Delhi, we can feel the pulse of vibrancy, an atmosphere of change in Jaffna,” Modi said. The renovated stadium, with a seating capacity of 1,850, will provide the necessary infrastructure to promote sports and recreational activities and assist the overall development of the youth of the war-ravaged Northern Province. “The Duraiappah Stadium is not just brick and mortar. It is a symbol of optimism and economic development. An arena of prosperous and healthy future of Jaffna’s youth. It demonstrates your determination to shed the legacy of violence and pursue the path of economic progress,” the Prime Minister said. President
Sirisena thanked the Indian government for its assistance and support for Sri Lanka’s development. “I consider the stadium as a centre for reconciliation because in a stadium you do not feel creed, race, religion or any differences. Sports and playground are the symbol of reconciliation. It is the centre of reconciliation,” Sirisena said. Sirisena’s remarks assume significance as he has taken many steps to reconcile with the Tamil minority after coming to power. Several confidence-building-measures such as the release of Tamilsowned lands, lifting of travel restrictions to the North and de-escalating the military presence have been taken since January as part of efforts to ensure reconciliation after three decades of civil war with the LTTE that claimed more than 100,000 lives.
Iraq forces retake Fallujah from IS
New suspect charged over Brussels attacks
Baghdad, Jun 18 (AFP): Iraqi forces raised the national flag over the government compound in Fallujah today, top commanders said, a breakthrough in the nearly fourweek-old offensive against the Islamic State group’s bastion. Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi went on state television to announce that his forces were in control of the city except for a few small pockets of jihadists. They met limited resistance from IS fighters, who were fleeing the city, the commanders told AFP, leaving the organisation on the brink of losing one of the most emblematic strongholds in its two-year-old “caliphate”. It is the latest setback for the jihadists who have also lost territory in neighbouring
Brussels, Jun 18 (AFP): A Belgian man has been arrested and charged in connection with the Islamic State suicide bombings that killed 32 people in Brussels in March, prosecutors have said. The 30-year-old, named as Youssef E.A, is one of several charged over the March 22 attacks that struck Brussels airport and a city metro station. The man has been charged yesterday with “participation in the activities of a terrorist group, terrorist murders and attempts to terrorist murders, as a perpetrator, co-perpetrator of accomplice”, Belgium’s federal prosecutor said.

Washington, Jun 18 (PTI): In a blistering attack on Donald Trump, IndianAmerican California Attorney General Kamala Harris has said the presumptive Republican presidential nominee has an “unstable temperament” and his dangerous policy positions make him “unfit” for holding a public office. All set to become the first Senator of Indian-origin this year, Harris said, “Donald Trump is doubling down on his outrageous, dangerous rhetoric.” “Most recently, he called for a ban on all Muslim immigrants and accused Muslim American communities of hiding terrorists,” Harris said in an email to her supporters. Harris is running for the United States Senate from California, a Democratic bastion.

Significant parts of northern Fallujah, where thousands of civilians are believed to remain, have yet to be retaken. In December 2015, Abadi announced the liberation of Ramadi, the capital of Anbar province where Fallujah lies, but it took several more weeks of fighting to establish full control. In the deserted, recently reconquered neighbourhoods of the insurgent bastion known in Iraq as the “City of Mosques”, elite forces were consolidating positions, stocking up on food and weapons. Dozens of bodies of dead IS fighters were left to rot under blankets amid the rubble of homes destroyed by air strikes, rockets or controlled explosions of the hundreds of bombs the jihadists themselves laid across the city.

Syria and in Libya in recent weeks “We promised you the liberation of Fallujah and we retook it. Our security forces control the city except for small pockets that need to be cleared within the coming hours,” Abadi said. Military commanders explained that the forces had raised the flag over the government compound in the centre of the city. “The liberation of the government compound, which is the main landmark in the city, symbolises the restoration of the state’s authority” in Fallujah, federal police chief Raed Shaker Jawdat told AFP. The overall commander of the operation, Lieutenant General Abdulwahab al-Saadi, said that “Iraqi forces have now liberated 70 percent of the city”.

Colombo, Jun 18 (PTI): India strongly believes that its economic growth must bring benefits to its neighbours, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said today as a stadium in Jaffna renovated by India was jointly inaugurated by him along with Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena. While thanking India for its assistance, Sirisena said Lanka was committed to strengthening bilateral relations even though there may be wrong understandings and interpretations at times. Modi, along with Sirisena, inaugurated the Duraiappah Stadium, named in honour of a former Mayor of Jaffna late Alfred Thambirajah Duraiappah. The stadium, in disuse since 1997, has been renovated by the Indian government at a cost of over Rs.7 crore. Describing it as a “landmark day”, Modi assured Sri Lanka that India will “walk side by side” with

bel Toluvi Assumi, a violinist by profession is about all set to change course and put his raspy voice into his new single ‘Ipuh Kuxu’ which means ‘My Dads’ Life’. The song is a gift to his dad for this Fathers’ Day and this song has a touching story behind it. He was inspired to write the last year during the Fathers’ Day when his dad was in the hospital fighting for his life when the other families were joyously celebrating at home. He decided to compose and sing this song to his dad as a surprise Fathers’ Day gift
at the hospital last year. But he couldn’t officially release this song then. But now He wants to dedicate this song to his dad and all other fathers and above all to our Heavenly Father as a thanksgiving for the life of his dad.

Gutsy India settle for silver in Champions Trophy
Murray enters Queen’s final
Colombia through to Copa America semis
Loew critical of Euro 2016 format
Jubilant Colombian players run towards the keeper after their penalty shoot-out victory in New Jersey.
London, Jun 18 (Agencies): Andy Murray will have the chance to win successive Queen’s titles after beating Marin Cilic in Saturday’s semi-finals. The defending champion will now advance into the Aegon Championship final where he will play Milos Raonic or Bernard Tomic after winning 6-3 4-6 6-3 against Cilic. Murray has now won all three Queen’s meetings against Cilic after previously claiming the 2013 final and profiting from a walk-over in 2011. The British No 1 sent out an ominous warning by breaking at the second attempt before fending off four break points to maintain that lead throughout the opening set. As Cilic’s strength against the serve began to wane, Murray finished the first set with aplomb. He broke for a second time, not allowing Cilic a single point as he whipped a cross-court winner beyond him. Cilic, a former US Open champion like Murray, threw the kitchen sink at the beginning of the second set but somehow couldn’t break. At 1-1, Murray gritted his teeth and saved break point but he couldn’t do so when Cilic rallied for a 4-3 lead. The Croatian then held his own serve from 0-40 down and forced a deciding set, but Murray broke at the first time of asking after a brilliant winner from behind his own base-line. He held that slim advantage for the duration, forcing Cilic to save match points on his own serve, before Murray booked a spot in the final with an ace.
The India team walk round the pitch after lodging a protest concerning the penalty shoot out Paris, Jun 18 (Agencies): during the 1st and 2nd place match between Australia and India on day six of the FIH Men’s Germany manager Joachim L o e w s ay s t h e 1 6 - t e a m Champions Trophy at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London. Friday. (AP/PTI)
London, Jun 18 (PTI): The Indian hockey team settled for a silver medal in its best ever Champions Trophy performance after the spirited side went down 1-3 to world champions Australia in a controversy-marred summit clash penalty shootout here. Only Harmanpreet Singh was able to score in the shootout, while SK Uthappa, SV Sunil and Surender Kumar all hit wide off the target. Just four attempts were required from the two teams as Australia had gained a winning 3-1 lead. Aran Zalewski, Daniel Beale and Simon Orchard scored for Australia, while Trent Mitton’s try was blocked by goalkeeper PR Sreejesh. India thus improved on its bronze medal show in the 1982 edition. There was plenty of drama in the shootout as Beale’s shot was re-taken after he failed to score and sought a video review. The video umpire asked the shot to be taken again, leaving Indian coach Roelant Oltmans fuming on the sidelines.
At the end of the match, India protested against the second successful attempt awarded to Beale, delaying the final announcement on the result of the match. The officials assembled to decide on India’s appeal as trophies were removed from the ground and fans also left the stadium. After discussing the appeal for more than an hour, the jury declared that there was unintentional obstruction on part of Indian goalkeeper PR Sreejesh in the seventh second thus the re-take of the shot was justified. The presentation ceremony was later held indoors. Fancied Australia, looking for their 14th Champions Trophy title, faced a stiff fight from the Indians, who were playing their first final, but raised the level to come within striking distance of the title. Australia wasted a penalty stroke in the second quarter and India failed to capitalise on their superiority in numbers when Australia were down to nine men for a short while in
the third quarter. India made the first foray into the circle in the ninth minute when Mandeep Singh broke in from the right flank and his shot rebounded off Australian goalkeeper Andrew Charter. The ball went to Uthappa, who had the opportunity to have a measured crack at the goal, but sent a rushed reverse hit wide to the right. I n t h e n ex t m i nu t e, Australia laid siege on the Indian citadel through four successive penalty corners, but goalkeeper Sreejesh brought off two fine saves. In the end, it was defender Surender Kumar who rushed out to block the penalty corner flick and the ball went out of the circle. Talwinder Singh exchanged passed with Nikkin Thimmaiah and went into the circle from left, but he got into a very narrow angle and posed no danger as he shot straight into the goalkeeper’s pads.

European Championship f o r m a t wa s “ i d e a l ” a n d bemoaned the 2016 expansion to 24 teams. European soccer’s governing body Uefa expanded the tournament after Euro 2012, but Low says he preferred the old format as it made every match meaningful. Before Euro 2016, only the top two from the four groups advanced straight into the quarter-finals, but the introduction of eight extra teams means that there is an additional knock-out round this time round. “The 16 teams was ideal. It made for great matches from day one.” Low said. “This is a different situation and a return to the
old system is obviously not possible anymore. So we have to accept that.” Loew feels that the tournament has become too open, with smaller teams adopting a defensive mentality with the knowledge that they can for broke in the final match should they need to. “Teams with one point from two matches still have a chance for the Round of 16. That is not very fair but it is what it is,” Loew, who is managing Germany in his third Euros, said. “The smaller nations like Albania or Wales are defensively very well schooled. They see their chance in that, so that is why we had only up to two goals per game until yesterday’s Spain win over Turkey.”

N e w J e r s e y, J u n 1 8 (Agencies): Colombia reached the semi-finals of the Copa America Centenario by beating Peru on penalties at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The two teams played out a low-key goalless draw on Friday, Colombia with the better chances until stoppage time, when Peru defender Christian Ramos threatened a dramatic winner. C o l o m b i a ’s A r s e n a l goalkeeper David Ospina then saved from Miguel Trauco before Christian Cueva’s miss handed Colombia a 4-2 win in the shootout to send them through to the last four of the competition for the first time since 2004. “Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, and today luck was on our side in the penalties,” said Colombia star
James Rodriguez. “Our goal was to get into the semi-finals at least and we’ve done that. Now we want to win the title.” Carlos Bacca’s early run and shot drew a sharp save from Peru keeper Pedro Gallese while at the other end, Paulo Guerrero’s cross was headed over by Edison Flores. The best chance yet came when Colombia captain James curled a shot with his weaker right foot from 20 yards against the base of a post, with Bacca putting the rebound wide from a tight angle. The rest of the opening period passed in scrappy fashion and that pattern continued after the break as Colombia were given an early free-kick which James curled straight at Gallese. Bacca headed straight at the keeper while Peru forward
Flores drilled a free-kick straight into the wall. Ramos made a crucial clearance to prevent Cuadrado’s cross reaching Bacca and Jeison Murillo headed James’ freekick well wide. Ospina made a vital stoppage-time save from Ramos’ header, taking the game straight to penalties, with Copa America rules specifying no extra time until the final. He then saved Peru’s third penalty, from full-back Trauco, with his right foot before Cueva put the fourth over the bar to send Colombia through. Ospina believes Colombia can reach the final on June 26. They will next play either Mexico or defending champions Chile - who meet in the quarters at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara on Saturday night - for a place in the final.

Satish, Sumit advance in World Olympic Qualifiers
BAKU, Jun 18 (PTI): Asian Games bronze-medallist Satish Kumar and Sumit down the right flank before Sangwan notched up facile setting up Lukaku in front wins to enter the second round of the Ireland penalty box. The Everton centre-forward produced a clinical finish from the edge of the box to put the Belgians ahead. Axel Witsel doubled the margin a short while later, exploiting some poor marking by the Irish defence to head in a cross into the penalty box by Thomas Meunier. It was Witsel’s first goal in a Belgian jersey in almost two years. The third goal showcased the speed and counter-attacking ability of the Belgium team. Meunier dispossessed James McClean deep inside the Belgian half before quickly sending the ball forward for Hazard. The Chelsea forward made a fast, unchallenged run down the left flank before finding Lukaku at the edge of the Ireland penalty box. Ireland goalkeeper Darren Randolph could only watch helplessly as Lukaku buried the ball into the net with a powerful finish.
Balazs Dzsudzsak runs with the ball under close attention from Iceland star Gylfi Sigurdsson (right). goal against Hungary in the 38th minute. The shot from the penalty spot gave Iceland a 1-0 halftime lead over Hungary in Group F of the European Championship. Sigurdsson shot low and hard in the 40th minute after a chaotic scramble in the box. Hungary goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly dropped the ball and then defender Tamas Kadar was whistled for fouling Aron Gunnarsson. Hungar y had earlier dominated possession but Iceland had the better chances, with Kiraly getting down to save a shot from Johann Gudmundsson. A firework was thrown onto the field by Hungarian fans as Sigurdsson prepared to take his penalty. That followed earlier disorder by Hungarian supporters, including lighting a flare during the national anthems and clashes with stewards before the game.
in Europe, World no.2 Belgium started their campaign in an embarrassing manner as they were thoroughly outclassed by Italy. However, they convincingly re-established their credentials on Saturday by showcasing awesome attacking ability. Playing a five-man midfield with Kevin de Bruyne as the playmaker behind lone striker Lukaku, Belgium dominated the proceedings and regularly put the Irish defence into trouble with their excellent play and fast counters. Ireland manager Martin O’Neil had employed a similar formation to the Belgians with Shane Long as the centre-forward, but their long ball tactics were not enough to beat the Belgium defence. Only some desperate defending enabled the Irish to maintain a clean sheet in the first half, but the quality in the Belgium team ultimately proved to be too much for them. Belgium took the lead almost immediately after the break. A fast counter saw de Bruyne make a splendid run

Paris, Jun 18 (Agencies): Birkir Saevarsson scored a late own-goal in 88th minute to give Hungary a 1-1 draw with Iceland in another European Championship game marred by crowd trouble. Saevarsson turned the ball into his own net off a cross from Nemanja Nikolic in the 88th minute. The goal was followed by several loud firecrackers and flares from sections of Hungary fans. Gylfi Sigurdsson had given Iceland the lead from the penalty spot in the 40th minute. He shot low and hard to the right of Hungary goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly after the referee ruled defender Tamas Kadar had fouled Aron Gunnarsson. Before the match, Hungarian fans clashed with stewards and police and threw flares onto the field. Hungary missed the free kick in 65th minute. It was a narrow escape. The free kick could prove the game changer for Hungary. Gylfi Sigurdsson of Iceland scored the first penalty

contention for a spot in the knockout phase of Euro 2016 with a dominant 3-0 thumping of Ireland in a Group E match at the Stade de Bordeaux here on Saturday. Romeru Lukaku (48th, 70th minutes) struck twice for the highest ranked team in the tournament while Axel Witsel (61st) also found himself on the scoresheet. UEFA charge Croatia for crowd trouble
Uefa has opened disciplinary proceedings against Croatia following crowd trouble during their Euro 2016 2-2 draw with the Czech Republic on Friday. European football’s governing body have charged Croatia after their fans set off fireworks, threw objects and made racist chants at the Stade Geoffroy Guichard in Saint-Etienne. Croatia boss Ante Cacic called the supporters who threw flares on to the pitch in the 86th minute “sports terrorists”. Referee Mark Clattenburg suspended the match briefly with Croatia leading 2-1, and when play resumed, the Czechs equalised through a 93rd minute Tomas Necid penalty. “They are not really Croatia supporters. These people are scary and I call them hooligans,” Cacic said. The Turkish Football Federation has also been charged after their supporters set off fireworks, threw objects and invaded the field of play during Friday’s 3-0 defeat to Spain.

Federer was looking to reach the final of his traditional pre-Wimbledon tune-up in Germany for an unprecedented 11th time, but found the bigserving 19-year-old too formidable. The Swiss world No 3 had not lost to a teenager for nearly 10 years gives an indication of Zverev’s considerable potential. Zverev dropped just four points on serve in the opening set to thae the tiebreak 7-4. Federer earned a break of serve at 5-5 with a beautiful dropshot in the second set to restore parity but Zverev responded strongly to dethrone the reigning Halle champion.
Zimbabwe shock India by 2 runs in 1st T20
Harare, Jun 18 (PTI): A fancied India suffered a shocking two-run defeat at the hands of an unheralded Zimbabwe as they failed to chase down a tricky target in the first T20 International cricket match, here today. Chasing a target of 171, India were restricted to 168 for six with seamer Neville Madziva bowling a brilliant over to give the hosts a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. After a 3-0 cakewalk in the preceding ODI series, India were brought down to earth by this embarrassing defeat in which captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s reputation as a finisher again took a beating. Needing only 8 off the final over, Dhoni who couldn’t connect a single big shot during his sedate 19 off 17 balls. Surprisingly, Dhoni took single to expose Himachal Pradesh’s Rishi Dhawan (1), who simply lacked quality or ability to hit the ball out of the park. Madziva bowled fuller and a few length deliveries, mixing it up nicely as the few hundreds of Zimbabwean supporters were ecstatic Zimbabwean batsman Elton Chigumbura and in joy. IPL regulars like Manish Neville Madziva hug, during the T20 International Pandey (48) and Axar Patel (18) cricket match against India.
did their bit to set it up but when it mattered the most, the little known Zimbabwean boys, none of whom have franchise contract in private leagues did it for their country. With 79 required off 42 balls, Pandey decided to take on rival captain Graeme Cremer, hitting him for two consecutive sixes as 16 runs came off the 14th over in company of skipper Dhoni. With Pandey getting a boundary off Neville Madziva’s next over that produced 12 runs -- India’s victory bid was back on track with 38 runs coming off three overs. Just when it looked that Pandey will take India home, he mistimed a lofted shot off Muzarabani’s bowling to get out for 48 off 35 balls having hit a four and three sixes. This brought down the equation to 28 off 16 balls. However Axar Patel hit one of the biggest sixes of the match over long-on to bring the equation down to 21 from 12 balls. A four and six off penultimate over saw Axar bring down the equation to 8 from the last over which the Indians failed to get. India will play second ,atch at the same venue on Monday.
