Britain leaving EU would be a ‘big mistake’: Cameron DIMAPUR monday, june 20, 2016

India confident of consensus for NSG bid British Premier David Cameron has assured Prime Minister Narendra Modi of United Kingdom’s “firm support” for India’s NSG membership bid, ahead of the nuclear trading club’s crucial meeting next week. Cameron confirmed Britain’s backing for India’s membership of the 48-nation Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) in a telephone call to Modi. “I think a consensus is being made, and I don’t think any country will break that consensus, and this time we will get the NSG membership,” Ms. Swaraj told reporters at the MEA’s annual press conference, adding that she had personally spoken to 23 of the 48 countries in the NSG. By rule, decisions on memberships and other issues in the body that regulates nuclear trade have to be taken by consensus amongst all members. The Minister’s words are especially significant as they come hours after the MEA announced that Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar returned from a visit to Beijing, which was kept under wraps. “All major issues, including India’s NSG membership, were discussed,” the MEA spokesperson said about the visit on June 16-17. Diplomatic sources in Beijing told The Hindu that considerable diplomatic heavy lifting has now been done with China, setting the stage for a

crucial meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the two day summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Tashkent that begins on June 22. But whether this results in a breakthrough or starts a “constructive process”, remains unclear the sources said. China has said publicly that it wants the NSG to agree on a process or “criteria” for members, indicating that Pakistan must benefit from any flexibility given to India, given that neither country has signed the Non Proliferation treaty (NPT). “China is not opposing India’s NSG membership,” Ms. Swaraj declared, in the first such public statement from New Delhi, “China is speaking of the process for membership.” She also said that India does not oppose Pakistan or any other country’s membership, “but want each to be judged on their own merit”, in a reference to Pakistan’s involvement in illicit nuclear trade with North Korea and other countries. “Instead of speaking about a criteria, one should speak about our credentials. Our track record should be discussed. I have great satisfaction in saying that whatever commitments and undertakings we gave prior to receiving the (NSG) waiver in 2008, we have kept,” Ms. Swaraj said.

UNTABA asks state to stop survey on 1925 notification

Matikhrü, Jessami tense over river issue

NEW DELHI, JUN 19 (AGENCIES): An international consensus is building around India’s bid for membership to the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said on Sunday, sounding confident of India’s bid that will come up for discussion at the NSG plenary on June 23rd in Seoul. According to Ms. Swaraj, the government is “hopeful of success in convincing China” by then, indicating that China would not wish to go against the consensus built. In a major boost, countries like US, Russia, UK, Switzerland and Mexico have all extended their support for India’s big to the Nuclear Suppliers Group. The US called on members of the 48-nation elite grouping to support India’s membership during the crucial meeting of the atomic trading club in Seoul next week. “The United States calls on Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) participating governments to support India’s application when it comes up at the NSG plenary,” State Department Spokesman John Kirby said. “I’m not going to get ahead of how that’s going to go or hypothesise and speculate about where it’s going to go, but we’ve made clear that we support the application,” Kirby said in response to a question at his daily news conference.

Dimapur, Jun 19 (NPN): Quoting unnamed “reliable sources” United Naga Tribe Association of Border Areas(UNTABA) through its chairman Hukavi T.Yepthomi and joint secretary Ruchuyhun Keppen, alleged, that the government of Nagaland had directed its Land Revenue& Survey,(LR&S), district administration and villages authorities, “ to undertake survey on the now infamous notification of 25/11/1925” The signatories pointed out that the above ‘notification’ was not mentioned either in the Naga Hills-Tuensang Area Act,1957 nor the State of Nagaland Act 1962. In the light of which, UNTABA said the notification could never form the basis for demarcation of interstate boundary, that is currently under litigation for almost 30 years in the Supreme Court. UNTABA said that the Assam government had filed a civil suit No.2 of 1988 in the Supreme Court against (1)the ministry of home affairs,(2)

Election Commission of India(ECI) and state of Nagaland by “insisting and pleading” that the 1925 notification form the basis of demarcation of the inter-state boundary. During the legal process, UNTABA alleged, that the government of Assam “unilaterally prepared” 16 and then 22 toposheets to justify claim for making the 1925 notification as the basis for boundary demarcation. However, according to UNTABA the hon’ble Supreme Court had “denied such unilateral claim” in the ongoing litigation. In the light of the above facts, UNTABA asked how could the state “undertake such erroneous step”that was detrimental to the historical claims of Nagas of their land and territories? It further demanded that responsible authorities desist from such “unlawful undertaking forthwith in the greater interest of Naga people’s history.”

Extortion at check gates in Karbi Anglong BOKAJAN, JUN 19 (AGENCIES): Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal in his first state cabinet meeting on May 25 had resolved to abolish all illegal inter-state check gates functioning at various parts of the state. However, such illegal taxation is going on unabated at various check gates in Karbi Anglong district under the very tutelage of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC). After the inter-state forest check gate and a private weigh bridge in Lahorijan, it has been alleged that some Karbi Anglong Entry Tax Gates continued to collect illegal money from the vehicles passing through it. In the last month, Karbi Anglong District Students Union (KADSU) has submitted a memorandum to chief minister Sonowal through Bokajan sub-divisional officer (SDO) alleging that such illegal collection has been going on unabated at various gates of at the patronage of the KAAC for its revenue collection bid. All Assam Students Union (AASU) central executive member Bedanta Saikia and KADSU general secretary Tridip Bora alleged that these gates have been extorting the vehicle owners plying on national highway No 36 and 39. A vehicle passing through the gates has to pay ranging from Rs 50 to Rs 500 depending on its number of wheels.

KOHIMA, JUN 19 (NPN): Situation in Matikhrü village, Phek district and Jessami village of Ukhrul district, Manipur was reportedly tense after some individuals allegedly dug a canal using excavator to divert Thetsu river course on June 16. Matikhrü villagers strongly objected saying that the strong river current was affecting their land. Meanwhile, EAC Meluri Kedale Sebu told this Correspondent on Sunday that the district administration held a meeting with the sub-divisional magistrate of Ukhrul district. It was decided that key of the excavator would be returned only after those responsible restore the original river route. NPF Peren division reacts to NPCC statement DIMAPUR, JUN 19 (NPN): Expressing dismay over the statement made by NPCC working president Ayang Aonok, asking “chief minister to apologize to the people of Peren”, NPF Peren division wondered as to how the chief minister had belittled the people of Peren. In a press note, Peren NPF division president, Haigam Kauring rather said that the working president, “a non-entity here in the district who might not even know where the district is, think that we the constituents and people of the district of Peren are so naïve as to think the rare opportunity of having our representative as the chief minister of the State is belittling?” Kauring said “the people of Peren district do not need a highly qualified person such as an IAS, and IPS, and Engineer or a Doctor to represent us”. He said that the people have selected, on their own and of their own choice, a simple person like TR Zeliang. Kauring reminded that Zeliang, from a humble background

who also knew and understood the problems of the common people, was best suited to represent the people. “We do not need Police Officers to treat us we are his jawans; nor do we need bureaucrats to treat us like we are his grade IV staff ”, said Kauring. “We need a son of the soil who knows the requirements of the land, and we will continue to support the leadership of TR Zeliang in the years to come, because we need someone who loves the people and works ceaselessly for the welfare of the people”. Hitting out at Peren district Congress, Kauring said it was upto them to search for a leader, “highly qualified in arts, sciences, medicines or engineering”. Stating that they were fed up with the educational qualification issue, NPF Peren said people were happy with the leadership of T.R. Zeliang. “After all, what has qualifications got to do with service to the people? What is qualification in politics? Does anyone need to qualify to enter politics? Is politics anything like NPSC or

UPSC where one needs certain degrees to qualify participation?” he questioned. He said that the grassroot level party workers were not bothered about Zeliang’s qualification, but was rather contented that his leadership qualities were recognised at the state level when he was made the chief minister, and at the international level where he was given the prestigious International Award at Bali, Indonesia. Kauring said TR Zeliang was duly elected as the chief minister and had been running the affairs of the state for over two years. However, he said that the “Congress working president, who had never contested any election in his life, and whose party does not have a single legislator in the Assembly, asking the Chief Minister to apologise to his constituents, is absolutely shameless, ridiculous and absurd”. Meanwhile, Kauring questioned as to why the Congress was raising such “allegations” against Zeliang’s, three years after facing defeat in the (Cont’d on p-7) polls. K Y M C

Kohima, Jun. 19 (NPN): Along with the rest of the world, Poumai Baptist Church Kohima celebrated Father’s Day at its church in Midland Kohima on Sunday. Speaking on the occasion, former women chairperson Khane said a godly father stands firm on what was right and lead the family

to godliness. She impressed upon the wives and children to acknowledge the job of a father who sacrifices everything for the family. Taking the example of Noah who saved his whole family from the wrath of God, she said a father should be like Noah; a protector, supporter, advisor. Another speaker on the occasion, former women secre-

tary, Naomi, in her speech said a father has great responsibility towards his family which can be fulfilled rightly only when he is a God fearing father. She challenged the fathers to be like Job in the bible- blameless, upright, God fearing and righteous. She also reminded the fathers that God created them with a purpose to live for “him.” Earlier, the service was

irrelevant without country Karnataka cabinet reshuffle: CM Don’t crave for ministership: Yoga wide liquor ban, says Nitish Siddaramaiah sacks 14, inducts 13 Gadkari tells party workers

PUNE, JUN 19 (PTI): With former Maharashtra minister Eknath Khadse and BJP state chief Raosaheb Danve in attendance, Union minister Nitin Gadkari Sunday asked party workers not to hanker after ministerial positions and said senior functionary should demonstrate ethical conduct. Addressing the concluding session of the two-day meeting of BJP’s Maharashtra state executive here, Gadkari appealed to the party workers to devote themselves to organisational work and the national cause. “Those who crave for position of power are driven by insatiable ambition and they remain unhappy. Ministership and the pomp and power that come with it do not last long. Senior party functionaries should demonstrate ethical behaviour to set an example for new workers,” he said. Those seated on the dais as Gadkari spoke included former state Revenue Minister Eknath Khadse, who recently resigned in the wake of allegations of wrongdoings, and state BJP president Raosaheb Danve. “We all have weaknesses. I’d weakness for food. Doctors performed the bariatric surgery (aimed at weight loss to curb obesity) on me and structurally limited my food intake which is good for health.” “Ever ybody should choose his own doctor to ensure good health by curbing the cravings,” he added. Noting that the BJP is a grassroots worker-based party and not a “dynastic” entity,

Nitin Gadkari with Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis and former Revenue minister Eknath Khadse, during BJP workers meeting in Pune on Sunday. (PTI) Gadkari said none of the leaders has been able to dictate terms while running it. Gadkari said his view was backed by his own experience as the party chief. “I was the president and I know this. This party is not run by the dictates of any one individual - be it Atal Bihari Vajpayee, L K Advani, myself, Amit Shah, or Narendra Modi. It has a different character and the party belongs to its workers who are the real source of its strength,” he said. Without taking name of any party, he said the BJP is not a “dynastic” party where the power is in the hands of family members. “This party does not belong to any individual and has a collective goal that each ordinary party worker tries to achieve as a mission,” he said. “Party workers should keep their interests at bay and work for the party and com-

mon people. You should go to the grassroots level and make people aware of the work done by Modi government in various sectors,” Gadkari said. He also appealed to the party leadership in the state to nurture the common party worker who is an “inseparable part of the party”. “I joined BJP in 1980. The Congress leader and then minister for state for Home, Shrikant Jichkar had told me that BJP had no future and offered me to join Congress. I told him that I have full faith in my party and though my future is not so bright in this party, I will work for it and if someday I get frustrated, I will commit suicide but will not join Congress,” Gadkari said. During his speech, Fadnavis once again exhorted the BJP workers to gear up for upcoming elections to various civic bodies.

M E D I N I N A G A R (JHARKHAND), JUN 19 (PTI): Ahead of the International Yoga Day on June 21, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Sunday said the ancient discipline is “irrelevant without imposing ban” on sale of liquor across the country and appealed Prime Minister Narendra Modi to act in this regard. “Yoga is a natural treatment process but liquor addicts cannot perform it. Yoga would be irrelevant unless a ban is imposed on sale of liquor across the country,” he said at meeting here in Palamau district. Apparently hitting out at Modi, who had actively participated in the International Yoga Day event last year, Kumar said, “I have been doing Yoga since childhood but have never publicised it.” He also accused BJP of turning the International Yoga Day event a “party affair”. “Ban on sale of liquor in Gujarat prevailed since Independence and Modi had no role in it. Hence, he should not try to take credit for it,” Kumar said. “In a democratic system like ours, welfare of the society should be the priority over trade and business,” he said, adding

his government has decided to forfeit Rs 5,000 crore revenue being generated by sale of liquor. “There are other avenues to generate revenue,” Kumar said, adding if conducive atmosphere prevails and law and order is maintained, adequate revenue can be generated by promoting trade, business and industry. “While I have decided to impose ban on sale of liquor in Bihar, Jharkhand government has increased liquor quota in the bordering areas to generate revenue in violation of the 1915 Excise Act, which prohibits sale of liquor within a limit of 3.6 km from the area under purview of the ban,” he alleged. “I had apprised Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das of my government’s decision to impose ban on sale of liquor from April 1, vide a letter dated January 18 and sought cooperation from him to make it a success, but his government did not cooperate,” he claimed. Referring to switching over of six JVM MLAs to BJP, Kumar, who was accompanied by JVM chief Babulal Marandi at the meeting, alleged, “BJP can stoop to any level to grab power”. Speaking on the occasion, Marandi said, “Opposing ban on liquor sale on the pretext of tribal culture is an insult to the community.” JMM supremo Sibu Soren had launched a movement against sale of liquor and money lending in 1970s and JVM, with the support of Kumar, would continue to pressurise Jharkhand government to ban sale of liquor in the state, he said.

BENGALURU, JUN 19 (IANS): Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday inducted 13 new ministers in his three-year-old government, while dropping an equal number. Governor Vajubhai R. Vala administered the oath of office and secrecy to nine new cabinet ministers and four ministers of state at a simple ceremony on the lawns of Raj Bhavan here. The nine cabinet ministers are K. Thimmappa, K.R. Ramesh Kumar, Basavaraja Rayareddi, Meti Hullappa Yamanappa, Tanveer Sait, S.S. Mallikarjuna, M.R. Seetharam, Santosh S. Lad and Ramesh Laxmanrao Jarkiholi. DU blocking RTI query on PM degree, claims Kejriwal NEW DELHI, JUN 19 (PTI): Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal Sunday said media reports claiming Delhi University has blocked an RTI query seeking details of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BA degree “deepen the mystery” surrounding his educational qualifications. He contended DU “cannot reject” information sought under the Right To Information Act by a city-based lawyer and the university should write to the Prime Minister to seek his permission for releasing the documents. “This deepens the mystery around PM’s degree. If DU feels that it is private info then under RTI Act, DU shud write to PM n seek his permission. DU can’t reject (sic),” he tweeted. He recalled BJP chief Amit Shah and Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had defended Modi when the controversy erupted over his alleged fake degrees, saying the documents were “genuine and anyone could take it from DU”. “What? But why? Didn’t Amit shah n Jaitley ji say that degree was genuine and anyone cud take it from DU?(sic)” he asked on Twitter. In its reply to the RTI query, DU reportedly said it has the right to maintain the privacy of every student and the information can only be disclosed to the student concerned. The varsity said the applicant can approach the Appellate Authority of DU’s School of Open Learning within a month from the day the reply was issued

of the seven legislative council seats in the biennial elections. “The revamp will ensure proportionate representation to all the people across the state, spanning castes and regions,” a party official said. Mallikarjun replaced his father Shivashankarappa from Davangere, while Ramesh replaced his elder brother Sathish from Belagavi district. Karnataka is the only major state where the Congress is in power after the party lost in Assam and Kerala in the recent assembly elections. Siddaramaiah and state unit chief G. Parameshwara are hoping the revamp will restore the party’s image, tainted by drought crisis, farmers’ suicides and a spate of controversies. “Siddaramaiah wants to inject new and young blood in the cabinet and move some of the ministers for party work in the run-up to the next assembly election, due in early 2018,” a source added.

ment Board (on the issue of Chief Ministerial candidate in UP). When the time will come, the Parliamentary Board will discuss and decide on it,” he told PTI. Singh said the party will take a decision depending on the situation. When pointed out that BJP got power in Assam where it had declared a Chief Ministerial candidate and lost in Bihar polls where nobody was projected for the top job, Singh said despite not declaring a CM candidate, the party won Maharashtra, Haryana and Jharkhand. There has been speculation that the party may project Singh, a former Chief Minister, as BJP’s face in assembly elections in UP. Singh himself, however, ruled out returning to the state politics saying there are many capable leaders who can be Chief Ministerial candidate.

opinion/EDITORIAL

Govt moves to correct difficult heritage

Nagaland Post Vol. XXVI NO. 192 Dimapur, monday, June 20, 2016

A badly divided state

M

anipur continues to remain on the boil for several months over the issue of the three controversial bills that were passed by the state assembly on August 31, 2015 - the Protection of Manipur Peoples Bill 2015, the Manipur Land Revenue & Land Reforms (Seventh Amendment) Bill 2015 and the Manipur Shops & Establishments (Second Amendment) Bill 2015. The bills were passed in a special session of the assembly in response to the valley people’s demand under the aegis of Joint Committee of Inner Line Permit System (JCILPS) for the implementation of an Inner Line Permit system in the state. The bills were first sent to the state governor for his approval, but he then forwarded to the president for his review and ordinance. The tribals of Manipur under the aegis of Joint Action Committee(JAC) however strongly believe, that the manner in which the bills were passed without open and proper discussions with all stakeholders, raised discomforting questions. While the valley people, who are predominantly Meiteis, view the bills as a mechanism to protect the state and its people from outsiders, the hill people (the Kukis and Nagas) see the bills as a threat to their rights over identity and land. For example, Clause 2(b) of the Protection of Manipur People Bill defines “Manipur People” as “Persons of Manipur whose names are in the National Register of Citizens, 1951, Census Report 1951 and Village Directory of 1951 and their descendants who have contributed collective social, cultural and economic life of Manipur.” Making 1951 as the cut-off year would exclude many of the tribal population from the definition of “Manipur people.” In that year, most of the hill areas were not accessible by road and the situation remains the same in some places even today. There is also a lingering apprehension among the tribal people that the state government would use the bills as a strategic political ploy to gain access over their land. The unwillingness on the part of the state government to implement the Sixth Schedule in the hill areas exacerbates the concerns of the tribal people. In the light of the President of India, having withheld assent to the three controversial bills, the Ibobi government will be compelled to revisit and review so as to ensure that conflicting clauses are removed. In this regard, Manipur deputy chief minister Gaikhangam said that the state government was considering drafting of a fresh ILP related bill in consultation with all stakeholders, particularly agitating JCILPS (which is demanding ILP) and tribal bodies protesting the three bills. The tribals versus Meitei issue is an old one in the state; tribals allege that the hill districts are under-developed as compared to the Imphal Valley. Manipur is one of the worst affected states with a pronounced ‘bandh culture’ and can boast of the longest bandhs and blockades adversely affecting the economic life-lines of the state. Bandhs and blockades often involve mindless violence, casualties and damage to public and private property. The tragedy that has befallen the state is unthinkable, at a time when each and every politician of all hues, speak of their own “democratic rights”. Unfortunately, the basic rights of the people, to live in peace and in freedom has been totally hijacked. The government of Ibobi is playing with the fiddle while the people moan and groan under the killing weight of agitations, bandhs and violence.

DailyDevotion The Service of Passionate Devotion …do you love Me?…Tend My sheep. —John 21:16 Jesus did not say to make converts to your way of thinking, but He said to look after His sheep, to see that they get nourished in the knowledge of Him. We consider what we do in the way of Christian work as service, yet Jesus Christ calls service to be what we are to Him, not what we do for Him. Discipleship is based solely on devotion to Jesus Christ, not on following after a particular belief or doctrine. “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate…, he cannot be My disciple” (Luke 14:26). In this verse, there is no argument and no pressure from Jesus to follow Him; He is simply saying, in effect, “If you want to be My disciple, you must be devoted solely to Me.” A person touched by the Spirit of God suddenly says, “Now I see who Jesus is!”— that is the source of devotion. Today we have substituted doctrinal belief for personal belief, and that is why so many people are devoted to causes and so few are devoted to Jesus Christ. People do not really want to be devoted to Jesus, but only to the cause He started. Jesus Christ is deeply offensive to the educated minds of today, to those who only want Him to be their Friend, and who are unwilling to accept Him in any other way. Our Lord’s primary obedience was to the will of His Father, not to the needs of people— the saving of people was the natural outcome of His obedience to the Father. If I am devoted solely to the cause of humanity, I will soon be exhausted and come to the point where my love will waver and stumble. But if I love Jesus Christ personally and passionately, I can serve humanity, even though people may treat me like a “doormat.” The secret of a disciple’s life is devotion to Jesus Christ, and the characteristic of that life is its seeming insignificance and its meekness. Yet it is like a grain of wheat that “falls into the ground and dies”— it will spring up and change the entire landscape (John 12:24).

Nagaland Post, Dimapur monday, June 20, 2016

t is not easy to manage a bad economy that a government inherits. The NDA government is afflicted by this heritage. The economy was infested with severe problems, siphoning of funds, scams, high bank NPAs, monopolized markets and high prices. Some of these like the untimely price hikes of food grains, pulses, and commodities put severe strains. The recent CPI-based inflation climbed by 5.7 percent on the back of rising food grain, pulses and vegetable prices. The WPI also showed a nominal increase. The government took the actions that include excise duty hike on sugar and creation of buffer stock for pulses. The 20 percent duty hike on sugar exports, increased availability and had a sobering effect on the prices. It also initiated the measures to control the prices of pulses and other commodities. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed concern over the situation and asked to monitor the situation on a weekly basis. His call to taxmen for building “bridge of trust” is also extremely timely. The prime

minister should also look at how personal income tax keeps reduces with inflation. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley announced to utilise the price stabilization fund to check the prices. It utilized Rs 630 crore for the creation of buffer stock for pulses and onion. It is importing pulses from many countries including Myanmar and Panama. The government is also keeping an eye on warehouses so that the private importers are not able to make use of the shortages in the market. The government is supposed to act in difficult situations. The noises are appropriate. But the steps need deeper look. Importing staple dietary needs like pulses may be a short-term approach. For a long-term solution a new look economic steps are needed. The pulse production has been falling for over 25 years. Piecemeal steps to increase it have not worked. Food minister Ram Vilas Paswan says that domestic demand veers around 24.6 million tons against production of 17 million tons. The recent drought has increased the availability

gap by 7.6 million tons. The centre built a buffer stock of 15 miilion tons. These show the intent of the government. However, the pricing formula, buying at Rs 66 a kg and allowing the states to sell at Rs 120 a kg is a bit puzzling. If the government itself allows so much of margin for one Shivaji commodity, it is likely to set not a proper example for other businesses. Nobody doubts the intention but government has to have actions that are businesslike. Such huge margins raise many questions, including effectivity of the proposed steps. The government itself is not supposed to be in the business of onion or pulses. The citizenry, however, expects it to create an atmosphere of checks and balances in the market. The recent moves are indications of the seriousness. But if the government makes the right moves, it may create situations similar that NDA-I under Atal Behari Vajpayee had done. The prices were one of the lowest and still the nation remembers him for that.

The Modi government has initiated moves, if taken forward properly, it can have similar sanguine effects. During these few years, due to various steps or inertia of the intermediate governments – UPA-I and II – lots of convolution has taken place in the market. There is monopolization Sarkar of some big groups. Their profits during the 2004-2014 bounced several fold. Some of them have earned annual profits of 80 to 142 percent and on an overage some others profits were between 20 to 40 percent – abnormally high by any standard. It indicates that they severely increased prices of various goods, cosmetics and commodities manifold. They also boosted prices by forcing people to buy in bulk. Should the government be held responsible for such malpractices? No, it should not be. All the same, no government can absolve itself of any irrational and unethical practices in the market or society. The present government has to look at these aspects as well. The large groups should

be prevented from having a way of their own. In the new marketing and investment scenario, these are some of the critical areas requiring deft handling. The AT&T had become too powerful about two decades back. The US used its anti-trust laws to clip its wings. That was too drastic. However, for the functioning of any democracy, government must arm itself. No one should be in a position to defy the government. Such steps and institutions of regulators are a necessity so that the government can free itself of looking into trivialities. This government has the capability to create mechanisms so that nobody can trade on the miseries of the people be it shortage of commodities, delayed deliveries or none at all as in the housing sector, hiking prices by car manufacturers of the same product/engine branding with euphoric names. Food prices are not the only items that need government’s attention. India is aiming to become a large producer with Make in India and many other programmes. Price stability is sine qua non. Normally market does it

Materialism overtaking spiritual values in Naga churches

F

rom Bethsaida Jesus and his disciples came hither, the district of Caesarea Philippi, a city named in honor of Augustus by Herod the great. The city was a center for the worship of Pan god; Pan was usually said to be the son of Hermes. He was often represented as a vigorous and lustful figure with the horns, legs, and ears of a goat; The city also had some beautiful pagan temples such as the temple of Augustus, the temple of Zeus, the temple of Nemesis, the temple of Pan and the dancing goats, the tomb temple of the sacred goats and the court of Pan and Nymphs. The place was a dominant epicenter of pagan worshippers and Jesus to make a point that even death and Satan would not be able to thwart His program to establish a Church asked his disciples who actually He was and among the disciples it was Peter who made his famous confession followed by Jesus’ historic announcement that “He will build His Church,” a new community of professed believers in Christ Jesus encompassing both Jews and Gentiles. Thus, as promised by our Lord, Church began on the day of Pentecost, and at the inception church were believers, they worshipped at houses, necropolis, cave or at any convenient place that was free from persecution. They met to have prayers, encourage one another to be firm in their faith and to uphold the Lordship of Jesus etc. However, as Leonard Ravenhill said, we are now million miles away from the New Testament Church. Ravenhill’s concern was changed in values, diverted priorities, and weak emphasize on Church’s mission which is vividly transparent in today’s existing churches. Are Churches in Nagaland setting our priorities right? Most of the Nagas are preoccupied with the concept of Church as

A

legendary author of those powerful moral fables is being increasingly plagiarized today. One theory says that Aesop was a slave from the Island of Samos who lived in the 6th Century Before Christ. Of those hundreds of lessons, said to be Greek fables, we have 203 of them published in English by the Penguin Popular Classics (1996). The supposed author was a slave, and no wonder, those hypothetical stories sound very real to human encounter with life. For, only those who have lived life in its real sense of the term can identify the ingredients that make life. The fables contain teachings that make the readers think how to look before they leap. If everyone today looked before s/he leaps we would be living in a well ordered world today. These fables

a building. We have to get rid of our understanding that Church is not a building. In no time we rate the church to be a spiritual and progressive church if the building is beautifully architect instilled with all modern amenities. If the church is able to provide a car, modern house and handsome salary to its ministers then it automatically becomes a model church but we have to remember that a church building built at the cost of million rupees is no guarantee that it is a spiritual advanced church. Materialistic prosperity should not be the measure of church community’s spiritual status that is prevalent in our society. If the church is not winning a soul and lacks in producing disciples or faithful followers of Christ who abides by the whole counsel of God then a Church’s mission commanded by Christ becomes a failure. Mark’s gospel Chapter 8: 58 state that a man’s soul is more precious than the entire world. In Nagaland, church buildings and worldly assets assess the spiritual status of a church. Ironically, the vocation to be fishers of men are now deviated and those called to be fishers of men are fishing money from rich people to build church building, to buy cars and for other building projects. When Christ has abolished the distinction between Jews and Gentiles, it is seen that Naga churches give due recognition to people depending on one’s income. People with higher income have a special status in the church unlike those with lower income. Perhaps, churches need to be reminded of Martin Luther King Jr, who rightly said that “if the church does not recapture its prophetic zeal, it will become an irrelevant social club without moral or spiritual authority.” Apparently, a question arises over church’s moral and spiritual author-

ity upon all class of people in Naga society. Are churches in Nagaland impacting lives to such extend that Politicians, Bureaucrats, Government employees and entrepreneurs are honest in executing their duties abiding Christian principles with honesty? Why there is immense corruption from Political arena even down to Village level. Why is our society yet to avail basic human needs such as good roads, Proper Electricity supply, Hospitals, Schools and water? Aren’t churches responsible for all these mess since most of the Nagas are a member in their respective churches? I’m in no way trying to nullify the importance of giving towards building and car projects by the believers but we place too much importance on Materialism than spiritual values. Nagaland, though addressed as a nation for Christ, but there are enormous number of drunkards, drug addicts, thieves, beggars, widows, orphanages etc. The above mentioned groups of people need a special care from every church. We need counseling centers, rehab centers, hospitals, homes for orphanage and charity works more than beautiful church buildings and luxurious cars. Jesus isn’t going to reward us for the big church buildings and luxurious cars the churches have achieved. Worldly assets and its values will pass away and what remains will be our service invested in spiritual values and benefits. Heaven surely rejoices when a lost soul is brought to God. God is pleased when a retrogressed believer restores his faith in Christ. But will God be pleased when there are beautiful buildings and cars but a lot of dying souls and backslidden believers in our Land? Is Materialism overtaking the value of human souls in our churches? Jesus commanded us to make

disciples; the disciples were right on this mission, they build believers, they disciple people to follow the principles Christ has laid and they never emphasized on building a church building as seen in the Gospels and in New Testament writings. Souls are vital not buildings and cars. Apostle Paul, the greatest missionary of all time who lived in the heydays of Roman Emperor and planted churches, in his writings, he did not place the value of human souls and over materialism. Is present churches in Nagaland perduring this mission as priority to win lost souls and disciple people to Christ or more concerned with building a church building. Though it is necessity that we have a proper worship place but not this expensive. Churches need to take heed the word of Pastor John Hagee who said “If a church is more concerned with budgets and buildings than people…they should close their doors! The church without mercy is a fraud.” Why compete with economically developed Christian countries. Nagas are economically unstable, we depend on foreign sources for our living, and spending a huge amount of money for worldly assets should be discouraged. So, let’s build a church not a building and in fact all believers are called for this task to witness the gospel of Christ to build church, not necessarily one has to stand in the pulpit and preach, or acquire theological degrees to do this but we can personally do it with close friends, family members, relatives. May God help the readers to muse and reflect on the issue why most of the Naga churches are focused towards materialistic prosperity than spiritual values? remind us of the reality of cause and effect; the fact that life is constructed on a moral balance; that even a negligible deed of kindness does not go unrewarded; and, that egoism and pride are not at all life enhancing emotions, to cite a few. The educationists hold that the mass of earlier experience in the learner makes new learning easier. The tribal people, like the Nagas, are rich in fables like that of Aesop’s which prepares the Naga minds to perceive and identify with what Aesop was telling. A similar situation to the advantage of the Nagas is the parables of Jesus. Those parables sound very familiar that it feels like it is taking place in our families, villages, and fields. The Nagas, with their earlier experience of such life situations took the parables of Jesus (and for that matter the fables

of Aesop’s) so lightly that their central teachings for life is taken for granted, not practiced. In the schools some of these fables (Aesop’s) were translated into Naga dialects by the Education Department for Primary Schools which the present writer read long ago. The world of the Nagas was mostly non-Christian in those days and the Bible lessons had not been much popularized in schools. These fables from Aesop were the generators of moral sense in our young minds as well as in the psyche of the adults. These fables were not only for the young minds in the schools. When the school children told these fables to their parents the latter would listen with delight and take them as real life stories because in these folktales they had their non-human agents talking,

(From previous issue) And while, rules of providing a specific time period for entry vehicle into the town/city areas is being enforced, this had also posed a number of threats and baneful effects to the inhabitants of the State particularly to people/ commuters living on the fringes of the towns and highways staring from Khuzama village to Dimapur. These vehicles on being halted get queued up on the highways, in numbers running to 100 plus, cloaking the entry and exit routes, accumulate and creates pollutions, one being released, they floods into the narrow hairpin highway running at an impermissible speed covering the entire road resulting in a number of accidents. Unwarranted incidents and fatal accidents are on the rise and are bound to produce unhealthy social situations if remedial measures are not being initiated as the earliest. The organization will have no issue on these matters as long as

concerned authorities and departments effectively monitor the situations. However,, sadly no legal rules or conditions are found to have been notified/ enforced/ imposed upon to contain the problems as highlighted above. Neither is there any iota of initiatives from the authorities to rehabilitate the physical and impacting damages caused to. It could be therefore, be pertinent to immediate demand that: 1. Provisions/machinery to weigh and check vehicle loads be enforced. 2. Vehicles designed not suitable/hazardous to ply our terrain be barred entry. (Particularly heavy vehicles running on with more than 12 wheels). 3. Designated parking slots/ areas with basic amenities are created to house heavy vehicles, to control pollutions and other contaminations. 4. Ensure and detail security personnel to escort and control the movement/ speed pf heavy vehicles

crossing the State, especially trucks/ tankers plying down from Manipur towards Dimapur. 5. The entry time for Inter-State heavy vehicles (goods carrier) be scheduled to 7 PM-7 AM. 6. Heavy Vehicles to be stranded on the Highway, particularly at Peducha Gate and Reserve Gate Phesama, owing to the Entry Time Rule, be resized and their stationing locations be reallocated. Your prompt response and action on these issues is urged upon to avoid future inconveniences. An appeal to the railway authorities

H

eavy rains and blocked drains have played havoc in Railway Bazar, West Yard Colony, Chatteshwari Colony, and Manipuri Basti in Dimapur and people in these areas are living in virtual hell for last few days. Sri Tovihoto Ayemi honourable MLA Constituency No. 1 and Chairman NIDC also visited the affected area and asked the Rly authorities to take corrective measure. Sri Kesonyu Yhome D.C. , and his officers & DB’S, the C.E.O. DMC, Sri Atokhe Aye, and the local G.Bs and Sri Hesheto Sema, and many more including volunteers of the locality have been working on war-footing to ameliorate the miserable condition of the dwellers in the aforesaid colonies. Dimapur District Citizen Forum Members visited the affected areas and were shocked and surprised to see this situation in which people were made to live in waist-high dirty drain water. The railway tunnel which passes under the railway tracks gets clogged and is never cleaned and maintained as a result of which waterlogging occurs in the aforesaid areas and they get inundated. The Railways turned a blind eye and only after the efforts taken by the D.C and his officers, the C.E.O DMC and others, the people got a small relief. Railway authorities were forced into action against the menace, only when the public threatened to stop the Jan Shatabdi Express passing through Dimapur railway station. The lackadaisical attitude of the Railways have caused so much pain and suffering and the people expect that this will never recur. The residents of the areas also have a serious responsibility of not throwing garbage in the drains and thereby keeping the drains clean. We appeal to the railway authorities to find a permanent solution to this unwanted situation. Joseph Lemtur, President, DDCF, K. K.Paul Advocate, General Secy, DDCF

relating, and acting. No doubt some of these fables, pregnant with moral teachings impacted them, even supporting their innate qualities of honesty, friendliness, truthfulness, generosity, and the sense of humor. The sorry state of affairs for Aesop is: the tribal people, the Nagas especially, have assimilated those fables and even incorporated them with their fables. A student in my class would sometimes begin narrating about his/ her village, “There is a story about a greedy dog in my village. One day the dog with a piece of meat in his mouth was passing through a bridge. When he saw his image in the water...”and so they continued. The fable of Belling the Cat; the baby crab and the mother crab; the lamb and the tiger; the fox’s failure to reach the grapes; the dinner

on its own. But the political conditions and executive moves ensure that no volatility take place. Healthy conditions and also of appropriate competition and not cartelisation have to be created. It is also essential for quality and right prices. Manufacturing has to learn to thrive with affordable prices and good practices. If it is sliding, the fault is not only of the economy but also the practices of many producers. A key to maintain prices and wages is adequate farm production. During 2004-2014, it either stagnated or dwindled. India remains a farm-based economy. Poor farm conditions hit all. The Modi government has started giving it a fresh look. It shows positive growth. If this is maintained and farms become profitable, it would have sanguine effect on prices and market. The government should be seen the least but must be alert. It has to ensure benign interventions. Easier the life people have, more comfortable it would be for the government. The nation has many hopes. It expects the economy to be back on rails.

exchange between the crane and the fox, etc. are some fables which have been claimed by the narrators to have a Naga origin. Even those fables with categories not available in our tribal world are told as if it had happened in our villages. We can safely say so here in our homes but if this is told to an international audience what will the listeners think! They will surely take it as plagiarism. In this age of right to intellectual properties we need to tell the young learners to differentiate the fables – those of the Nagas and those of Aesop’s. They will be saved from embarrassment and even litigations. Moreover, Aesop who has conscientized the world to live in a moral world is to be gratefully acknowledged wherever his fables are told. Reader’s Post

The people are very impatient of seeing the goods

Sir,

The Naga national political talk between the government of India and the Federal government of Nagaland in 1964, after a lapse of its golden jubilee, a settlement is being expected between the Gol and the Nagas now led by the NSCN (I-M). A historic Frame Work agreement was signed on August 3, 2015 recognizing the uniqueness of Naga political history and situation. The content is not yet made known to the public but the frame work itself is being appreciated by many people. In the context of the present situation, some people may say better and bigger but cannot do better and bigger. A settlement is inevitable. Organizational unity may be impossible though pressed hard by the public but accepting the reality is more essential. My simple thought is that the talk will not be hanging beyond August 3, 2016 because it has lasted 18 years and the people are now tired of hearing about an ongoing talk. On the part of the public all should pray to God Almighty that He may grant wisdom and power to the spokesmen to thrash out and overcome the vexed problems and difficulties to bring about the desired conclusion. ZUF threatens total blockade on NH 37

Correspondent

IMPHAL, JUN 19: Zeliangrong Youth Front (ZYF) Sunday threatened to impose total blockade on ImphalJiribam section of NH-37, demanding the state government to book the culprits involved in a recent shoot out incident in at Namthanjang in Manipur’s Senapati district within 48 hours. On June 17 night, seven villagers including a policeman were injured in a firing incident that took place at Namthanjang as fallout of an intra-village land dispute case. Noting the incident that involved life attempt to villagers, destruction of private residences and properties worth lakhs of rupees, Zeliangrong

Youth Front (ZYF) submitted a memorandum to the state chief minister on Sunday. While demanding befitting action against the culprits, ZYF asserted that not only the destruction to houses and properties, the incident has created social unrest in the village. “…… disturb peace and tranquillity, hatred and enmity, inciting grouping and tension with rioting motive, disturbing travellers and commuters on national highway by imposing bandh with propagating false and misleading information etc. at Namthanjang village of Saitu Gamphalzol in Senapati district,” ZYF alleged in the memorandum.ZYF further maintained that in order to safeguard and protect the lives

Sonowal oversees preparations for Ambubachi Mela at Kamakhya G U WA H AT I , J U N 1 9 (PTI): Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal Sunday visited the Kamakhya Temple atop Nilachal Hill here to oversee the preparedness for the famous Ambubachi Mela to be held there from June 22. The Chief Minister inspected the arrangements made for the pilgrims coming from different parts of the country and abroad for the Mela at the holy temple and asked officials to ensure all arrangements in respect of accommodation, drinking water and sanitation for the pilgrims. Keeping its rich tradition of according highest respect for visitors since ages, the state would keep up the tradition on a con-

stant high by welcoming the pilgrims during the five-day Ambubachi Mela, Sonowal said. Director General of Police Mukesh Sahay was also directed to ensure a full-proof security apparatus in and around the Shakti shrine. The Chief Minister also appealed to the people as well as the pilgrims to maintain cleanliness in the temple and its peripheral areas in the true spirit of ‘Swacch Bharat Mission’. After paying obeisance to Goddess Kamakhya for peace, prosperity and amity in the State, Sonowal also visited the camp set up at Sonaram Higher Secondary School playground near the temple to oversee the facilities put in place for the pilgrims.

and properties of the lawful citizens from criminals and unlawful activities committed against citizens, the front will resort to different remedial measures in the event of the state government failing to take appropriate action against the accused within the stipulated dateline for the end of justice, it added.ZYF also demanded rehabilitation and payment of adequate compensation by the government for the properties loss and destructed for the victim families. However, none of the alleged accused turned up which compelled the ZYF to hand over the detained accused to the police where an FIR against the accused persons had already registered.

NPF Peren division reacts... (From p-1) He reminded that during scrutiny of nomination papers in 2013, the Congress candidate and the election agents were given all the papers to verify and make objections or clarification. However, Kauring claimed that the Congress declared before the Returning Officer that they had no objections. Urging the Congress to allow law to take its own course, Kauring asked why were they so impatient? And why this trial by media? It also asked the working president whether he was hurt by the fact that Zeliang was in the chief minister’s chair hurting. On the other, Kauring said “if he wants to be the chief minister, why doesn’t he first contest the elections? An arm chair politician will always remain in the arm chair, not in the chair of power”. He further alleged that there were some people from the district who were “professionals in filing RTIs and filing petitions in the courts for

material returns.” Used by political parties for political ends, he said that these individuals were basking in the lime light presently. “But when the dusts settle down and the gleam in their eyes fades, they will come back to the Constituency and face the ridicule of masses who will ask them what good they have achieved for the people by trying to demean the very person who is trying his best to uplift the condition of the entire district and the State!” He however said that they were at liberty to file cases and make fools out of themselves. But in the long run, they would “rue and weep and apologise for what they are doing now”, he added. As for the Congress party leaders, NPF Peren said they could only ask them to “bide their time and wait for 2018 when they might not even get proposers to back their candidates in the District, that is, if they find anyone willing to contest on their party’s ticket.”

Zomi hails withholding ILP related bills; political dialogue with Kuki militants Correspondent

IMPHAL, JUN 19: Zomi Council, an apex body of Zomi tribes, Sunday hailed the withholding of ILP related bills and also initiation of political dialogue with Kuki militant groups by the government of India. Zomi Council is an apex body of Gangte Tribe Council (GTC), Kom Union Manipur (KUM), Mate Tribe Council (MTC), Paite Tribe Council (PTC), Simte Tribe Council (STC), Tedim Chin Union (TCU), Thangkhal Peoples’ Organization (TPO), United Zou Organization (UZO), and Vaiphei Peoples’ Council (VPC), according to a statement issued Sunday. Stating that same was conveyed to the government of Manipur on May 11 last and it “clearly shows beyond a

shadow of doubt that the Government of India, specifically the Ministry of Home Affairs, has meticulously and minutely examined the bills purely based on the merit of its legal and constitutional validity and viability.” Reposing its full faith and confidence in the Union home ministry, the council believed that it would scrutinize the other two pending bills, Manipur Land Revenue and Land Reforms (7th Amendment) Bill, 2015 and the Manipur Shops and Establishment (2nd Amendment) Bill, 2015 on its merit, legality, procedural nature and constitutional provisions taking into consideration the concerns of the tribal people. And it would not to be swayed by “emotional appeal and the pressure tactics adopted by political parties operating in the state of Ma-

nipur.” The Zomi Council was also delighted that the Centre is aware of the immense hardship faced by the tribal people of Manipur, and as a step toward solution to our long-standing problems had initiated political talks with the United People’s Front (UPF) and Kuki National Organization (KNO), under tripartite Suspension of Operation (SoO) since August 2008. The preliminary political talks which was held in New Delhi on June 15 last at the initiative of the MHA was a manifestation of the sincerity and seriousness of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government under the dynamic leadership of Narendra Modi to solve the protracted tribal issue in the interest of peace and development, it said.

Shipment arrives in Tripura under new transit protocol Rhino killed in Kaziranga National Park A G A RT A L A , J U N 1 9 (IANS): A consignment of 1005 tonnes of steel rods arrived on Sunday in Tripura from West Bengal through Bangladesh as part of revised ‘Inland Water Transit and Trade Protocol’ between the two countries. The protocol was signed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Dhaka in June last year. “A Bangladeshi ship from Kolkata carrying 1005 tonnes of steel rods meant for Tripura gover nemnt’s Rural Development Department reached Ashuganj river port in Bangladesh on June 15,” an Indian custom official said.“Bangladeshi trucks then carried the goods from Ashuganj port to Tripura’s Akhaura checkpost, from where the transporter would arrange to have the goods delivered to six places in Tripu-

ra,” the customs official said. Akhaura checkpost, just along Agartala city, is the second largest trading point and land port between India and Bangladesh after the Benapole-Petrapole land port with West Bengal.Ashuganj port on Meghna river in Bangladesh is about 40 km from Tripura’s capital Agartala. “Four Bangladeshi trucks arrived here on Sunday. Then Indian trucks carried the freight to their destinations inside Tripura. More such trucks would carry the goods from Ashuganj port to Tripura in subsequent days,” Sujit Roy, the transporting company’s manager, told IANS. The transit facility with provision of third-country access was formally inaugurated on Thursday at Ashuganj port by Bangladesh Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan in

the presence of Indian High Commissioner in Bangladesh Harsh Vardhan Shringla and Bangladesh Prime Minister’s Economic Affairs Adviser Mashiur Rahman. The custom official said Kolkata-Ashuganj-Tripura route cuts the Kolkata-Agartala distance via Siliguri’s ‘chicken neck’ and Assam and Meghalaya from 1,600 km to 500 km.“The reduced distance substantially cuts transportation costs from mainland India to the northeastern region and the time from 15 days to just 10 days.”The revised Inland Water Transit and Trade Protocol also gives India and Bangladesh the right to use each other’s territory for transiting goods to third countries. Bangladesh can thus use Indian territory to transit goods to Nepal and Bhutan while India can access Myan-

mar via Bangladesh. The official said: “The protocol facilitates trade and development not only between India and Bangladesh but in the entire sub-region facilitating trade and development in the sub-region.” Earlier, as goodwill gesture, Bangladesh government last year allowed India’s Food Corporation of India to ferry 35,000 tonnes of rice in different phases to Tripura from Visakhapatnam port in Andhra Pradesh and Kolkata port via Bangladesh, using the Ashuganj river ports and Bangladesh highways. In 2011-2012, Bangladesh had allowed India’s Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) to ferry heavy machinery, turbines and overdimensional cargoes through Ashuganj port for the 726-MW Palatana mega power project in southern Tripura.

G U WA H AT I , J U N 1 9 (IANS): Poachers killed a one-horned rhino inside the Kaziranga National Park in Assam and took away its horn, officials said on Sunday. “The park guards found the carcass of a female rhino in Bagori range today (Sunday) morning. Its horn was missing, indicating it to be a case of poaching,” an of-

ficial said. The animal was poached on Saturday evening. A manhunt has been launched to trace the poachers. It is the ninth onehorned rhino to be killed this year at the National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, spread over Assam’s Golaghat and Nagaon districts.

to sources. The high prices of pulses, however, arise from the longterm issue of supply falling short of demand by “about five million tonnes, Jaitley said in his TV interview, terming the shortfall a “serious challenge for the government to tackle. The demand-supply gap could be even wider than five million tonnes. A source in the food ministry said: “As against the average supply of 17 million tonnes of pulses, the national demand is about 24 million tonnes. India is largest producer of pulses but also largest consumer and a very large importer. The ministry confirms that about 5.5 million tonnes of pulses were imported in the last financial year. This year too the government is looking to import pulses from Myanmar, Mozambique and other countries, the source said. He said pulses are generally imported by private traders as well as public-sector agencies. “But to avoid black-marketing, government-to-government contracts have been planned with countries like Myanmar to import the stuff for enhanced buffer stocks, the source said.

New Delhi, Jun 19 (IANS): About 1.30 lakh tonnes of pulses have been seized from hoarders in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, New Delhi and other parts of northern India in the last few months, official sources said here on Sunday. The crackdown is part of government efforts to rein in the spiralling prices of pulses, of which some varieties are selling in retail in large cities in the range of Rs 180-200 per kg. “Hoarding is a hard fact and this is reported from parts of north India including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. So far, adequate actions have been taken in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, an official source said. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley told a TV channel in an interview telecast on Saturday that action against hoarders last year helped the government bring the prices of pulses down by about Rs 50 per kg in the retail market. This year the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, Income Tax department and local police have been conducting raids on people who are suspected to have been hoarding pulses to take advantage of the high prices, according

puts state-owned refiners on par with private firms like Reliance Industries and Essar Oil. “We now have greater flexibility but still to operate within the framework of (anticorruption watchdog) CVC guidelines, the official said. The previous policy limited purchases to a handful of companies, often leading to PSUs missing out on chance to grab cheap, distressed cargoes. Oil PSUs, on an average, import 70-80 per cent of their oil through annual supply deals, also called term contracts. The remaining is bought from the spot or current market through tenders. Term imports on official selling price of the exporter country and there is not much that can be done about it. But operational and financial autonomy in spot purchases help better margins. “We imported 63 per cent of our crude oil on term contract and the remaining 37 per cent from the spot market in 2015-16. This is compared with 76 per cent term import and 24 per cent spot purchase in 2014-15, the official said. Reduced time in deciding tenders helps realise better price, he added.

B e n g a lu ru, J u n 1 9 (IANS): Indian IT major Infosys has set a goalpost of $20 billion in revenue with and operating margin of 30 per cent to be achieved by 2020, said Chairman R. Seshasayee on Saturday. “Vishal Sikka, our CEO and his management team have articulated a strategy to achieve $20 billion in revenue by year 2020 with a 30 per cent operating margin and $80,000 in revenue per employee, he said at the 35th annual general meeting. Terming the four-year targets to be aggressive and ambitious, Seshasayee said Infosys board strongly believes that these are eminently achievable through game changing initiatives, with the course not being easy. The chairman said that the said goals must also be viewed in the context of significant external and internal challenges. “Markets are volatile, business models are changing rapidly, new capabilities need to be built and the organisation needs to adapt with great agility, he said. According to Seshasayee, digital technology is having a phenomenal impact on businesses around the world and creating exciting and viable new opportunities for Infosys to parent with clients.

New Delhi, Jun 19 (PTI): Indian Oil Corp (IOC) has cut by more than half the time it takes to finalise a crude oil import tender after the government gave flexibility to state refiners to devise their own crude import policies. IOC, the nation’s largest oil firm, used to take 26 hours to decide on a tender for import of crude oil from spot or current market. In April, after the Cabinet gave state-owned oil refiners freedom to devise their own crude import policies, the time has been shrunk to 12 hours, a senior company official said. Time for deciding on tenders for export of petroleum products or fuel has been cut to just 9 hours from previous 35 hours. “Earlier, we had a threemember committee comprising two company executives and one senior official of the ministry of petroleum and natural gas to decide on awarding tenders for import of crude oil from the spot market. “Now we have an internal committee which can take decisions quickly, he said. The government gave flexibility to oil PSUs to help them secure cheaper oil cargoes in an oversupplied market. The new policy almost

While most of these people could not be immediately contacted for their comments, Mohan said it is “premature to discuss his candidature, while Bhattacharya had yesterday said that “Rajan is a person of very high caliber, who has built ably on the reputation of our central bank and given it a very large measure of credibility. Basu, also a former CEA, tweeted Rajan has been one of the finest central bank governors anywhere. Rajan, who will have the shortest tenure as RBI Governor since liberalisation began in 1991, is also one of the few non-bureaucrats in this post as most of his predecessors had been IAS officers. Traditionally, applications have never been invited for the post of RBI Governor unlike many other regulatory posts.

So, the sentiment will turn strongly positive and then industry and business will also start the process of re- orienting their business for GST purpose. You will suddenly see a lot of spurt in activity, he added. The names doing the rounds also include Chief Economic Advisor Arvind Subramanian, World Bank Chief Economist Kaushik Basu, Revenue Secretar y Shakatikanta Das, former Advisor to Finance Minister Parthsarathi Shome, BRICS Bank head and ICICI Bank veteran K V Kamath and Sebi Chairman U K Sinha. Like Rajan, Sinha was made Sebi Chairman during the previous UPA regime but was given a surprise and rare extension by the NDA government in February days before his already extended tenure of five years was to end. Other names being speculated are former RBI Deputy Governors Rakesh Mohan and Subir Gokarn, former Finance Secretary Vijay Kelkar,

The Finance Ministry expects the country’s growth rate to climb to 8 percent in the current financial year on the back of above normal monsoon. Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das expressed hope that the likely passage of Goods and Services Tax (GST) bill in Parliament would further add to the business sentiment, fuelling growth. “We will certainly exceed 7.6 percent growth. If the monsoon is good which we expect it will be because of the forecast and once the GST is passed, we can expect our GDP to touch 8 percent in the current fiscal, he told PTI in an interview. In 2015-16, the country’s economy grew 7.6 percent and the Economic Survey in February had projected a growth rate of 7-7.75 percent for the current fiscal while RBI had forecast 7.6 percent for the current fiscal. He further said although the GST is likely to be rolled out from April 2017, its passage would significantly help in boosting sentiment and generating economic activity.

NEW DELHI, JUN 19 (PTI): Speculation was rife Sunday on who will succeed Raghuram Rajan as RBI Governor with over a dozen names doing the rounds, including that of Deputy Governor Urjit Patel, former CAG Vinod Rai and SBI chief Arundhati Bhattacharya. Though there was no official word, the rumour mills were agog on who would be the next at the helm of the central bank, a day after Rajan made a surprise announcement that he was not interested in a second term and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said a successor would be announced shortly. Among the speculated names, Patel has been known as ‘inflation lieutenant’ of Rajan at RBI, while Bhattacharya’s tenure as SBI Chairperson also ends in September -- the same month when Rajan would demit office. Tehran, Jun 19 (IANS): Iran has reached an agreement with the US Boeing to purchase 100 passenger planes to renew the country’s aging fleet, the media reported on Sunday. The deal awaits the US government’s approval, head of Iran’s Civil Aviation Organisation (CAO) Ali Abedzadeh said, Xinhua reported. “We have 250 planes in the country, 230 need to be replaced, said Abedzadeh, adding that there could be no precise timeline for the contract without the US Treasury’s permission. Reportedly, the value of the deal amounts to $17 billion, but it is open for further negotiations. On Wednesday, Iran’s Minister for Roads and Urban Development Abbas Akhoundi said the deal with the US aircraft manufacturer was finalised and more details would be disclosed in a few days. In January, Iran reached an agreement with Airbus to buy 118 passenger planes worth around $27 billion.

31 dead, 19 missing in Indonesian floods

Thousands of people fleeing the flood hit cities in Indonesia. Banjarnegara (Indonesia), Jun 19 (AFP): The death toll from flash floods and landslides in Indonesia has risen to 31, an official said today, as search crews scour devastated villages in the hope of finding survivors. Nineteen people remain missing following torrential rain and widespread flooding in Central Java, where thousands of homes have been swamped in water. Areas prone to landslides in the densely-populated province have been worst hit, with drivers swept off roads and dozens of homes completely destroyed by fast-moving walls of mud, rock and water. Disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said the number of victims rose after seven people believed

missing were found dead. “So far we’ve recovered 31 bodies. Nineteen people are still missing,” Sutopo told AFP in a text message. In Banjarnegara, where six people were killed in an avalanche of mud, residents were bracing for the prospect of further floods. Emergency crews were trying to clear roads of felled trees and rocks dumped by huge landslides, a journalist at the scene said. Elsewhere victims were swept away by floodwaters and buried in their homes as landslides swept through villages. In one district, nine people were killed as they attempted to clear rubble from a blocked road. “Suddenly a huge landslide struck the cars and people on the street. Nine bodies were

Terrorism is ‘haram’: 1 lakh clerics say in fatwa Dhaka, Jun 19 (PTI): Over 100,000 Islamic scholars in Bangladesh have issued a fatwa, declaring militancy and terrorism in the name of Islam as “haram” while voicing their concern over a wave of brutal slayings of Hindus and secular writers by Islamists in the Muslim-majority country. Maulana Farid Uddin Masud, the chairman of Islamic scholars’ organisation Bangladesh Jamiyatul Ulama, pronounced the fatwa or a ruling on a point of Islamic law at a press conference here. Maulana Masud, the imam of Bangladesh’s Sholakia Eidgah, the largest Eid prayer congregation, said “some” of the militants and terrorists were “wrong” to identify themselves as “jihadists”. “Islam is the religion of peace...Islam doesn’t support terrorism,” Maulana Masud said yesterday. Referring to the Quran and Hadith, he said the suicide attackers will be cast in hell. “Even taking part in funeral prayers of terrorists, militants, covert killers is haram. And those killed for their stance against militancy will be martyrs,” he added. According to Maulana Masud, 101,524 muftis, alims and ulamas have signed the fatwa. The

fatwa was issued amidst a spate of killings of writers, bloggers, online activists, and people of different religious and social views by suspected Islamic radicals. The fatwa titled “the edict of peace for wellbeing of humanity” denounces the clandestine attacks on minorities and secular activists. “Even if the fatwas fail to stop terrorism completely, it will definitely help in curbing violence,” Maulana Masud said. Claiming that a section of criminals were spreading panic in several parts of the country with misinterpretation of the Quran and Hadith, Masoud said law enforcers will not be able to prevent them if the criminals’ misperception is not eradicated. The process to launch the fatwa began in January after the attacks on liberal and secular activists and religious minorities including Hindus and Christians by suspected Islamists sparked an international uproar, Masoud said. Bangladesh is under mounting international pressure to halt the violence, which in the past three years has claimed the lives nearly 50 people -- Hindus, Christians and secular bloggers -- many of them by machete-wielding attackers.

retrieved,” Sutopo said earlier in a statement. E va c u a t i o n c e n t r e s, equipped with temporary shelters and kitchens, have been erected near the disaster zones for those escaping the worst-hit areas. Footage aired by local broadcasters showed villagers sitting on their roofs to escape the rising water, their cars and homes submerged in brown water. Landslides are not uncommon in Indonesia, a vast tropical archipelago prone to natural disasters and torrential downpours. Last month, 15 students holidaying at a popular tourist spot in western Indonesia were killed when a landslide swept through their camp ground.

Britain leaving EU would Chinese call for a ban on ‘Dog meat festival’ be a ‘big mistake’: Cameron London, Jun 19 (PTI): Ahead of the June 23 referendum, Prime Minister David Cameron today warned that if Britain chooses to leave the European Union it would be a “big mistake” and would lead to “debilitating uncertainty” that can last up to a decade. In an article for the ‘Sunday Telegraph’, Cameron described the referendum as an “existential choice” for Britain. “We face an existential choice on Thursday. This country has a big decision to make – and there is so much at stake. It is simply common sense that if we left, trade would be damaged, and investment in Britain would suffer because businesses would no longer be able to access the EU from Britain in the same way. Our economy would therefore be smaller,” he wrote. “Debilitating uncertainty – perhaps for a decade until things were sorted. Higher prices, lower wages, fewer jobs, fewer opportunities for young people. A permanently poorer country in every sense. How could we knowingly vote for that? I say: don’t risk it,” he added. From the opposing camp in favour of Brexit, UK justice secretary Michael Gove appealed for confidence in a future outside the EU. “People should vote for democracy and Britain should vote for hope,” he said. He also rejected the suggestion leaving the EU would cause a recession: “There are economic risks if we leave, economic risks if we remain. “My argument is that whatever happens in the future, an independent Britain will be

Dhaka, Jun 19 (PTI): Bangladesh police today killed a militant with a bounty of Tk 500,000 on his head for murdering secular bloggers, as authorities stepped up their nationwide crackdown on Islamists in the Muslim-majority nation that has seen a string of brutal attacks on minorities and activists. “We have found out that he was a member of Ansarullah Bangla Team and one of the six extremists for whom we earlier announced a bounty of Taka 500,000 (USD 6374),” a senior police officer said. He said the militant was killed in a pre-dawn encounter in Dhaka and was named in a police list as Shariful or Sharif, but he previously used several other names like Sakib alias

Saleh alias Arif alias Hadi-1. The officer said Sharif was wanted for the murder of Bangladesh-born American science writer and blogger Avijit Roy, who was hacked to death by several men as he returned from a Dhaka book fair in February last year. The militant was also believed to have been directly involved in the subsequent killing of another blogger Niladri. The identification of the alleged militant came hours after police said a “miscreant” was killed in a shootout with police detectives in the capital’s Khilgaon area. Sharif was a firearm and ICT trainer and key-recruiter of ABT, which along with Jamaatul Mujahiedeen Bangladesh (JMB),

Local businesses launched the festival - arguing it was a tradition and part of the local culture - in 2009 to promote the remote area to tourists. “It is embarrassing to us that the world wrongly believes that the brutally cruel Yulin festival is part of Chinese culture,” Qin said, adding “it isn’t”. The festival in recent years evoked revulsion in China as many Chinese have turned to pets in recent years to cope up with loneliness as the only child permitted under law left home for education or jobs. A 2015 survey showed an estimated 30 million urban households owned companion animals.

is blamed for a series of fatal attacks on secular or liberal activists and religious minorities, according to a post on the website of Dhaka Metropolitan Police. Sharif ’s death came a day after another militant, who was arrested four days ago while carrying out an attack on a Hindu college teacher in southwestern Madaripur, died in a shootout. The 17-year-old, identified as Golam Faizullah Fahim, was killed in the surprise shootout a day after police secured a court order to interrogate Fahim in custody in connection with the murder attempt on Ripan Chakraborty, 50, a mathematics lecturer of a government university college in Madaripur.

About 51.7 per cent of the respondents - who included Yulin residents too - wanted the dog meat trade banned completely, while 69 per cent said they have never eaten dog meat. “The poll shows most people here don’t eat dogs,” said Qin Xiaona, director of the Capital Animal Welfare Association charity, one of a cluster of animal welfare groups that commissioned the survey. Beijing, Jun 19 (PTI): On the eve of the infamous annual “dog meat festival” in China, majority of Chinese today for the first time called for an end to the gory event in which over 10,000 canines are expected to be slaughtered and eaten by dog meat lovers. As the event is set to kick off tomorrow in Yulin city, in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, state-run Xinhua news agency reported today that majority of Chinese call for an end to “Yulin Dog Meat Festival”, saying it has “harmed China’s reputation” world over. About 64 per cent of those surveyed in age group of 16 to 50, said they would support a permanent end to the infamous annual event. Yulin residents too backed

David Cameron better able to cope with those strains.” Campaigning for the referendum, which had been suspended as a mark of respect following the murder of woman Labour MP Jo Cox, resumed again today with just four days to go before the referendum. Bookies have cut the odds on a Remain vote as latest opinion polls put the Leave and Remain sides almost neck and neck. Betting firms were offering odds of 4-9 on Britain choosing to stay part of the EU, compared with 4-7 earlier in the week. Opinion polls published today show no more than four percentage points between the two sides, within the pollsters’ margin of error. A survey by Opinium for the ‘Observer’ has the campaigns tied on 50 per cent and a YouGov online poll for ITV’s ‘Good Morning Britain’ show put the Brexit side on 51 per cent of the vote and Remain on 49 per cent, once undecided voters are excluded.

Messi shines as Argentina enter semis

Robson doubt for Wimbledon

London, Jun 19 (Agencies): Laura Robson’s injury woes continued as she withdrew from her qualifier at Eastbourne with a thigh problem. Robson began the match against American Madison Brengle with strapping around her right leg and was losing 6-4 1-0 when she pulled out. The British 22-year-old now faces a race against time to be fit for Wimbledon in eight days’ time, where she has been given a wild card into the main draw. A recurring wrist problem has halted Robson’s progress since she reached the last 16 at the All England Club three years ago and her ranking has dropped to 308th in the world. She has been entering major tournaments using her protected ranking, a privilege extended to players returning from long-term injuries, but after Wimbledon she will have to start qualifying by right. Russia failed own athletes over Olympic ban, says IAAF president London, Jun 19 (IANS): International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) President Sebastian Coe insisted that Russia, and not his organisation, is responsible for the country’s drug-free athletes being banned from the Rio Olympics. The governing body’s 27strong council unanimously decided at a meeting in Vienna on Friday to extend Russia’s suspension from international competition for doping offences, ruling that the criteria for reinstatement had not been met. Coe said the continuing sanction proved the IAAF’s commitment to cleaning up the sport and defended its impact on clean athletes. “In some quarters, the suspension in November was seen as only a slap across the wrist while we figured out how, in short order, we could get Russian athletes back into the athletics competitions in Rio,” Coe was quoted as saying by Sunday Telegraph. “I am comfortable with

Sebastian Coe

the choices I have made and I know that the work my council, my team and I are doing within the IAAF will change this sport for ever. It is worth fighting for. We have not prevented clean athletes from Russia from competing, rather the Russian system has cataclysmically failed their clean athletes,” he added. “So, we are now faced with critics claiming we have made an unfair decision on clean athletes in Russia. I want to be very, very clear on this. We did not make a decision on clean athletes. We eva l u a t e d a s y s t e m

and a culture within which all athletes in Russia are competing. A tainted system that cast doubts on every athlete who is part of it.” Rune Anderson, the head of the IAAF task force in Russia, on Friday spoke of “a very tiny crack in the door” for athletes training outside Russia in a “credible” system to compete in Rio, though not under a Russian banner. “We all recognise there are Russian athletes (who) made the tough personal decision to get out and are now training in systems that are effective and safe. I t i s t h e s e a t h l e t e s we believe should be offered the opportunity to compete, not for Russia, but for themselves and for all clean athletes,” Coe said. “ E ve n t h e c r e a t i o n of the task force, which presented its damning finding to us on Friday, was viewed as purely a cosmetic exercise. Friday’s decision could not be further from this.” the IAAF president concluded.

India look to level series against Zimbabwe but somehow were able to cope with the required run-rate. However, with the Indians needing seven runs in the final over, skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni failed to get his team over the line. M a n i s h Pa n d e y t o p scored with a 35-ball 48 but ideally he should have carried on. Another turning point for India was Axar Patel getting out to a loose shot in the last over. The bowlers too failed to put up a good show. Only Jasprit Bumrah could shine with the white leather, picking up figures of 2/24 from his

safety. The former Manchester United player thought he had made amends shortly afterwards when he glanced home Joao Moutinho’s floated free kick, but his effort was correctly ruled out for offside as Austria held on to keep themselves in with a chance of making the knock-out stages of the tournament despite only having one point from two games.

UEFA charge Hungary, Belgium and Portugal

Real Madrid star Ronaldo is muscled out of possession by Austria midfielder Stefan Ilsanker during a frenetic match Paris, Jun 19 (Agencies): Ronaldo missed a penalty as Portugal spurned the chance to move level on points with Hungary at the top of Group F after drawing 0-0 with Austria at the Parc des Princes. Despite dominating the game for long spells, they couldn’t find a way past a dogged Austria defence, with goalkeeper Robert Almer making several important saves. The key moment came eleven minutes from the end when Ronaldo saw his penalty rebound off the base of the upright and away to safety as Austria held on for a draw which

leaves the group wide open heading into the final round of matches next week. Austria should have been ahead inside the opening three minutes, but Martin Harnik couldn’t quite climb high enough to get a telling connection on Marcel Sabitzer’s cross and the ball drifted wide of the post. But Portugal hit back and Almer was forced to make a superb double save to deny Nani from close range and then on the follow-up. Ronaldo shot narrowly wide from a good position just after the 20 minute mark after Nani and Rafael Guerreiro had

combined well on the left. Portugal were now very much in the ascendancy and Nani almost put them ahead on 28 minutes when he headed Ricardo Carvalho’s cross against the upright with Almer well beaten. However, Austria were almost ahead four minutes before the break, but Vieirinha was on hand to acrobatically head David Alaba’s curling free-kick off the line. It was goalless at the break, but Portugal goalkeeper Rui Patricio was called into action within 38 seconds of the restart to turn away midfielder Stefan Ilsanker’s low shot from

the edge of the penalty area. Almer then produced a fine flying save to deny Ronaldo and was called into action again to turn away the Real Madrid striker’s goal-bound header from the resulting corner. Portugal continued to press and looked to have earned their reward eleven minutes from time when Ronaldo was dragged down by Martin Hinteregger and referee Nicola Rizzoli pointed to the spot. Up stepped the Portuguese skipper to send Almer the wrong way only to see his low shot strike the base of the upright and bounce away to

UEFA has charged the Hungarian, Belgian and Portuguese football associations for fan disorder at Euro 2016. UEFA says its disciplinary panel will consider charges against Hungary of “crowd disturbances”, throwing objects and setting off fireworks. Fans clashed with stewards and some police before Saturday’s Group F game with Iceland in Marseille when trying to climb a fence to enter a section behind one goal. Riot police then formed in lines in front of a section of Hungary fans, in the same end of the Stade Velodrome where Russians attacked England fans a week earlier. Hungary fans then lit or threw flares or firecrackers during the national anthems, when Iceland were awarded a penalty kick, and after their team scored a late goal in a 1-1 draw. The Belgian FA has been charged after a section of their fans set off fireworks and threw objects during the team’s 3-0 Group E victory over the Republic of Ireland in Bordeaux on Saturday. And the Portuguese are in trouble over a pitch invasion by a supporter during their 0-0 draw with Austria at the Parc des Princes in Paris.

The 23-year-old triumphed 2-1 in round of 32 contest against the world No.16, who is a former Youth Olympics silver-medallist. Sumit, who is hitting his strides after recovering from a string of injuries last year, will face Mongolia’s Erdenebayar Sandagsuren in the pre-quarters on Tuesday. However, it was heartbr e a k fo r Sa ti sh ku m a r (+91kg), who had to bow out owing to a cut above his eye during his pre-quarterfinal bout against Ireland’s Dean Gardiner. Satish sustained the cut in the first round itself and the bout had to be stopped in the second round owing to the seriousness of his injury. Earlier, Amritpreet Singh (91kg) had also bowed out of the event after losing in the opening round. The tournament has 39 qualifying spots up for grabs -- two in the 49kg category, five each in 52kg, 56kg, 60kg, 64kg, 69kg, 75kg and 81kg, and one each in 91kg and +91kg. Over 400 boxers from more than 100 countries are vying for these slots in the final qualifying tournament for amateur boxers. India have not sent any entry in the 56kg category as Shiva Thapa has already qualified for the Rio Games during the Asian qualifiers in March.

Row over Indian official’s alleged role in Zim rape case

New Delhi/Harare, Jun 19 (PTI): The secondstring Indian cricket team’s tour of Zimbabwe was today struck by a controversy after an official associated with one of the sponsors of the series was arrested on charges of rape even though he denied involvement in the incident. The storm erupted after the Zimbabwean media reported that an unnamed Indian cricketer had been arrested on charges of rape. The reports stated that India’s ambassador to the African nation, R Masakui, had tried to prevent the player’s arrest at a Harare hotel. However, Masakui outrightly rejected the media speculation by clarifying that the person arrested was not associated with the Indian squad which is currently engaged in a limited-overs series against Zimbabwe. “This is an unfortunate incident. However, this is to clarify that no cricketer is involved in this. We are seeking Counsellor access to persons and the Indian Embassy in Harare is following up with this case and will inform the government of India of the developments,” Masakui said. Official sources in India also denied the reports that set the social media abuzz today. “Regarding media reports of an Indian cricketer being involved in an alleged case

of rape in Harare, we have spoken to our Ambassador to Zimbabwe. The report is totally false. No Indian cricketer is involved,” the sources said. “An Indian affiliated with one of the sponsors has been arrested. He has also denied the charge and said he is ready for a DNA test to prove his innocence. Our Ambassador is following the matter closely,” they added. The BCCI also stepped in to clarify that none of its players or officials were involved in the alleged incident. “There is no truth in these allegations. There is no Indian cricketer or any match official involved in this. They have nothing to do with the incident. And if any individual is involved who is not a part of the BCCI or the team, we can’t comment on that,” BCCI President Anurag Thakur said.

In the morning session, Indian women’s recurve team of Deepika, Laxmirani Majhi and Bombayla Devi Laishram failed to open their account, losing the bronze medal clash to Italy 1-5. Later in the evening session, 24-year-old Das, in his bid to win a first individual World Cup medal, led 4-0 before losing to Woojin Kim 6-5 in a thrilling shoot-off. Indian women’s compound team had lost the bronze medal play-off on Saturday and it finished with a solitary medal from the last

stage of a forgettable World Cup as the men’s recurve team had missed the final chance to make the Olympics in the qualification event held on June 16. The Indian mixed duo of Atanu Das and Deepika Kumari started off with poor shots of eight, six and nine to lose the first set 0-2, a deficit they failed to overcome as the top seed Korean pair of Bonchan Ku and Misun Choi clinched an easy 5-1 win. After the early stutter, the Indian duo recovered to level the second, and shot 37 in the decisive set. But the consistent Korean team responded with two perfect 10s, followed by Misun’s nine, leaving Bonchan to follow it up with an identical score and he did not disappoint to seal a fine win.

Uncertain future awaits women’s boxing: Mary Kom

MC Mary Kom NEW D ELHI , J u n 1 9 (IANS): With five World Championship titles under her belt, MC Mary Kom is one of the legends of women’s boxing, but she is not sure that the next generation of Indian women boxers will yield too many icons. “There is not much competition in India. The nationals are not organised properly. For the last two to three years, there have been no competitions at the national level. I can’t see any woman boxer from India shining at the international level anytime soon,” Mary said. “The level of women’s boxing has really improved over the years and we need better training for the young, upcoming boxers,” she added. Mary had lost in the second round of the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan in May which dealt a severe blow to her chances of qualifying for the Rio Olympics. But the ad-hoc committee which is currently running

the sport in the country has appealed to the the International Boxing Federation (AIBA) for a wild card entry for the London Olympics medallist. Mary, who is praying hard for a chance to represent the country in her second Olympics, is confident that she will finish on the podium if she is allowed to take to the ring in Rio de Janeiro. “I was extremely disappointed after losing at the World Championships. The competition is getting tougher day by day. I am trying my best from my side. Unfortunately, I could not qualify till now. The entire country is supporting me and I am confident their prayers will bear fruit. “The ad-hoc committee has sent the application, let us see what comes out of it. I am very hopeful,” Mary said. “If I do get to Olympics, I have high chances of getting a medal. I have trained really hard and I am in good shape right now. I was unlucky at the World Championships. I should have won that bout, but these things happen in sport,” she asserted. Indian boxing has been going through a rough patch since 2012 when the AIBA banned the national federation over allegations of rigged elections. Ever since, the two suspended rival bodies - Indian Amateur Boxing Federation (IABF) and Boxing India (BI) - have been bickering with each other.
