Govt rolls out second wave of FDI KEY HIGHLIGHTS

Will attract capital, create jobs: India Inc

NEW DELHI, JUN 20 (AGENCIES): Government on Monday launched a second wave of FDI reforms allowing 100 per cent inflows in civil aviation and food processing sectors while easing norms in defence and pharmaceuticals, steps apparently aimed at neutralising fallout of Raghuram Rajan’s decision to exit RBI. Launching the second set of sweeping reforms, Prime Minister Narendra Modi Monday said it makes India the most open economy in the world for FDI and would give boost to employment as part of efforts to transform the country. “Key reform decisions were taken at a high level meeting chaired by the PM, which makes India the most open economy in the world for FDI,” Modi said in a tweet. In a second tweet, he said the changes would provide a “major impetus to employment and job creation in India.” Government’s move to relax foreign direct investment (FDI) norms in sectors, including civil aviation, single-brand retail, defence and pharma, will help attract big investments and boost job creation, India Inc said on Monday. A significant change in local sourcing policy for singlebrand retail trading could now enable US-based Apple Inc

Ban on cancercausing additive in bread, other food NEW DELHI, JUN 20 (AGENCIES): Government of India on Monday banned use of potassium bromated as a food additive following a CSE study that found its presence in bread as causing cancer. The Food Safety Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), however, has referred potassium iodate -- also claimed to be carcinogenic used as a food additive -- to a scientific panel. “FSSAI has banned potassium bromate. A notification has been issued in this regard. As far as potassium iodate is concerned, it has been referred to a scientific panel,” FSSAI CEO Pawan Kumar Agarwal said. Last month, the regulator had recommended to the health ministry removal of potassium bromate from the list of permissible food additives after a study by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE). The CSE study had found that 84 per cent of 38 commonly available brands of pre-packaged breads, including pav and buns, tested positive for potassium bromate and potassium iodate. These two food additives are banned in many countries and listed as “hazardous” for public health. According to CSE, potassium bromate typically increases dough strength, leads to higher rising and uniform finish to baked products while potassium iodate is a flour treatment agent.

* Upto 100% FDI in defence sector * Upto 74% FDI in brownfield pharmaceuticals under automatic route * 100% FDI in brownfield airport projects under automatic route * 100% FDI in civil aviation * FDI upto 49% in civil aviation under automatic route, beyond 49% through govt approval * Local sourcing norms for FDI in single brand retail for products having “state of art” and “cutting edge” technologies to open stores under today’s decisions which also cover broadcasting carriage services, private security agencies and animal husbandry. The major reform measures were decided at a highlevel meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which was earlier said to have been planned for tomorrow. The stock markets also reacted positively to the news of FDI reforms even as they recovered from early morning plunge after talking-up by influential marketmen that helped counter Rexit (Rajan’s exit) jitters. Other sectors in which FDI norms have been relaxed include e-commerce in food products, broadcasting carriage

services, private security agencies and animal husbandry. Terming the simplification of policy framework governing investments in strategic sectors like defence and aviation as a “huge positive for the economy”, Ficci Secretary General A Didar Singh said, “The Modi administration through these moves has once again highlighted that reform is a continuous process in order to capitalise on the potential India offers.” In the defence sector, foreign investment beyond 49 per cent has been permitted through the approval route in cases resulting in access to modern technology in the country or for other reasons. The government has

done away with the clauses pertaining to the ‘state-of-theart’ technology. The decision to further liberalise the FDI set-up with the objective of “providing major impetus to employment and job creation in India” was taken at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday. This is the second major reform overdrive in the FDI space after significant rules relaxations in November 2015. Briefing media, Commerce Minister Nir mala Sitharaman said the decisions would help in attracting more investments, creating jobs and making India the global manufacturing hub.

The Congress went on to say that the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) reforms were a “panic reaction” with its spokesman Jairam Ramesh asserting it would not have come about had Raghuram Rajan not announced his decision on Saturday to exit RBI as Governor. The government, however, maintained the reforms initiative had nothing to do with Rajan’s decision. CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury said the “dangerous part” is FDI in defence, noting there are very few countries where it is allowed in this sensitive sector. Opposing the major reforms, the Trinamool Congress said that in the name of ‘Make in India’ the Modi government is “breaking India”.The Swadeshi Jagran Manch, the RSS affiliate which has been criticising some economic policies of the Modi government, said the FDI reforms is not aimed at job creation. “It is aimed at snatching away jobs from Indian people. It will spell a death knell for local businessmen.” “Opening sectors like retail, defence and pharma to FDI and by relaxing norms is ‘betrayal’ of people of the country. In doing so, this government has not done good to the country in general and local businessmen in particular,” SJM’s national co-convener Ashwani Mahajan told PTI.

CGBU backs order on riverbed mining ban DIMAPUR, JUN 20 (NPN): Chakhroma GBs’ Union (CBGU) has described the order issued by DC Dimapur, which banned the use of heavy machinery for extraction of resources in Dhansiri and Chathe rivers, as “a much long felt need and a welcome step” and affirmed that it “wholeheartedly support” the ban. In a press release, CGBU president Thepfukedo Kuotsu and general secretary Atso Gwizan stated that “there were five major rivers that pass through the Chakhroma Angami traditional villages viz. Dzüza river (Zubza river), Dzümha river, Khuova river (Khopa nalla), Chathe river and Tamorü (Dhansiri river)”, besides other rivulets, adding that people depended on those rivers and their resources for their livelihood and sustenance. However, they said with introduction of heavy machineries, the riverbeds and resources therein were being destroyed beyond repair and many villages were being adversely affected. One of the most glaring immediate effect, CGBU said was that due to random excavation of riverbeds, the ground water level has reduced so much that most ring wells were now drying up by months of March and April every year and villagers were now facing acute shortage of water where there was once abundance of water. It said many farmers

who depended on those rivers for irrigation of their paddy fields were now abandoning their fields as riverbeds were excavated so deep that they were not in position to dig irrigation canals deep enough to reach water level in the river. CGBU said it was “deeply disturbed” that source of livelihood of the majority of “our people” i.e. agriculture, was being sacrificed and destroyed due to wanton exploitation of rivers by a few. It also expressed deep pain over drowning of so many children and losing precious lives after accidentally falling into deep pits left uncovered and unmarked by the miners. Observing all those factors, the CBGU opined that since rivers were “common properties” and as no private individuals have ownership of rivers as per Naga customs and traditions, it was the responsibility of every village situated near the rivers to ban such illegal activities and protect the river and its resources within their area. In this regard, the union appealed to all village councils to protect rivers and resources by banning illegal excavation of riverbeds the same way illegal hunting and fishing were banned. It also suggested that DC order banning riverbed mining should be made permanent instead of a few months and should be made to cover other rivers also.

China throws cold water on India’s NSG hopes Bullet train to connect Delhi-Varanasi in 2.4 hrs BEIJING, JUN 20 (IANS): In a blow to India’s NSG hopes, China said on Monday that the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) was still divided over admitting the country and that New Delhi’s application for membership was not on the agenda of the plenary of the 48-member bloc in Seoul later this week. B e i j i n g ’s s t a t e m e n t comes a day after India’s External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj exuded confidence in getting China’s support for membership at the NSG - the global nuclear trade regulatory body. “The Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) is still divided about non-NPT (Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty) countries entry into the NSG and under the current circumstances we hope that NSG will make thorough discussions to make a decision based on consultation,” Hua Chunying, spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry, told the media here. “The inclusion of non-NPT members has never been a topic on the agenda of NPT meetings. In Seoul this

year there is no such topic,” Hua said. The NSG, which controls global nuclear trade, is to hold an important plenary June 23-24 in Seoul when the membership application of India, along with Pakistan, were scheduled to be taken up. On Sunday, Swaraj said China “is not opposed to India’s entry” into the NSG but was “only talking about the criteria procedures” to New Delhi’s entry to the nuclear grouping. China has been opposed to India’s membership to the bloc on the grounds that it is not a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Beijing has also said if New Delhi is admitted, then so should Islamabad, its allweather ally, be given admission to the elite bloc. India, which finds the NPT discriminatory in nature, has been backed by the US, Switzerland, Mexico, Italy, Russia and Britain. However, some member countries like New Zealand, and South Africa have been opposing India’s entry. Consensus among all

member countries is essential to allow a new entrant. On Sunday, Sushma also said India “will not oppose entry of any other country. What we want is all the applications are decided on their own merits”. Sushma Swaraj’s remarks came close on the heels of Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar’s unannounced trip to Beijing last week to discuss India’s NSG bid with Chinese government. President Pranab Mukherjee had also been to China in the last week of May when he had taken up the issue with the top Chinese leadership. The Chinese media has said that India’s entry to the NSG will “shake the strategic balance in South Asia and even cast a cloud over peace and stability in the entire AsiaPacific region”. The state-run Global Times daily in an opinion piece this week said that China could support India’s inclusion to the elite nuclear club if New Delhi “played by the rules”.

NEW DELHI, JUN 20 (AGENCIES): The second bullet train after the MumbaiAhmedabad corridor will run from Delhi to Varanasi, a distance of 782 km, and could complete the journey in just two hours and 40 minutes. The project connecting the capital to the pilgrimage city, which is also PM Modi’s

Lok Sabha constituency, while passing through Lucknow has been fast-tracked ahead of the UP polls next year. Though it will be a while before the service rolls out, the DelhiVaranasi stretch — part of the Delhi-Kolkata corridor — has been accorded topmost priority for the railways after the national transporter acceler-

ated the Mumbai-Ahmedabad stretch by tying up funds with Japan and setting up of the High Speed Rail Corporation. Fast-tracking of the stretch seems to be part of the Modi regime’s strategy to project a pro-development image ahead of UP polls. The Delhi-Varanasi stretch will pass through Aligarh, Agra, Kanpur, Lucknow and Sultanpur. An official said the interim report by a Spanish firm, which is conducting feasibility study of the high-speed rail corridor, was discussed by the Railway Board and the firm is likely to submit its final report in November. As per the report, the travel time between Delhi and Lucknow (506 km) is likely to be 1 hour 45 minutes while travel between Delhi to Kolkata (1,513 km) will take 4 hours 56 minutes. The preliminary cost, without rolling stock, being worked out is estimated to be about Rs 43,000 crore for the Delhi-Varanasi stretch and around Rs 84,000 crore for the entire Delhi-Kolkata corridor.

Correspondent

IMPHAL, JUN 20: A local joint action committee (JAC) formed in connection with alleged rape and murder of a 21-year-old girl Monday set a 72-hour deadline to the police to book the culprits involved in the case. A women based pressure group has also demanded a separate unit to deal with all forms of crime against women and children noting seriously the rising crime against women and children in Manipur. The girl went missing since June 11 last, was found murdered with telltale signs of sexual assault on Sunday morning. Her partially nude and decomposed body was found floating on the water of a canal running near Thoubal district police headquarters. Denouncing the heinous crime committed on the girl, villagers of Khangabok and its

adjoining areas Monday called for a bandh along the ImphalMoreh section of NH-102. The JAC blocked the highway to pressurize the state government to book the culprits alleging that that the girl was murdered after being raped. After the police foiled the highway blockade, the villagers staged a sit-in-protest at a market shed on the side of the highway at Khangabok. Later, the police arranged a meeting of the representatives of the JAC with the chief minister in Imphal around 11 a.m. and air their demands. After the meeting, leaders of the JAC informed that they demanded the chief minister to take up necessary action to find out the culprits and award befitting punishment within 72 hours. If the authority fails to book the culprits within the stipulated timeframe, the JAC with the supports of the people

and civil organisations launch a series of agitations, the leaders said. Meanwhile, Women Committee, United NGOs Mission Manipur (UNMM) has demanded a separate unit of the police to deal with crimes against women and children considering the failure of the state police to deal with such crimes. A separate unit, in the line of Special Investigation Unit (SIU) having the latest investigative technology such as DNA testing facility must be set up in the state at the earliest to deal with any form of case related with women and children, convener Sobita Mangsatabam of UNMM demanded. She claimed that 467 cases of missing of women and children including the 21-year-old girl victim were reported from 2005 till date. But none of the cases was solved satisfactorily, she added.

The Chief Minister has suggested some measures for reforms but I have not received any instruction from him.” The APSC has become a centre of controversy over the last several years. There are allegations about massive anomalies and favouritism on the part of the APSC Chairman and its officials in terms of civil services and other examinations, and several organisations have taken to the streets demanding immediate removal of the APSC Chairman. NF Railway plans to tap non-conventional energy

G U WA H AT I , J U N 2 0 (AGENCIES): As a part of the Indian Railways’ plan to use non-conventional energy, the Northeast Frontier Railway has initiated steps for running the Guwahati Railway Station with solar power, while a feasibility study for using wind power in Haflong is also being initiated, according to report published in The Assam Tribune. NF Railway CPRO PJ Sarma said that the Lumding Division of the NF Railway has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Container Corporation of India and Central Electronics Limited for installation of a 700-KW power grid station at the Guwahati Railway Station. This will be the first station under NF Railway to use solar power. Sarma revealed that the total cost of installation of the power grid and maintenance for a period of five years would be around Rs 6.77 crore and the Container Corporation and the Central Electronics Limited would carry out the project under their corporate social responsibility and there would be no expenditure on the part of the Railways. He said that the NF Railway, at present, does not have the required expertise for

maintenance of such solar power stations, and that is why, the maintenance would be carried out by the Central Electronics Limited for a period of five years. After that, the power station would be handed over to the Railways. By that time, the Railways would be able to get the required expertise for its maintenance. The CPRO said the project is likely to be completed by February next year and afterwards, the Guwahati Railway Station would be run mostly on solar power. He pointed out that it would reduce dependence on conventional power to a great extent and reduce the total expenditure of the Railways. If the project becomes successful in Guwahati, gradually other major railway stations of the region would be able to switch over to solar power in the years to come. Meanwhile, the Railways has floated global tenders for feasibility study of harnessing wind power at Haflong station and other parts of the hill section. Sarma pointed out that the wind speed in Haflong is very strong compared to other parts of the State and that is why the decision to carry out the study for generating wind power has been taken.

Teresa part of a conspiracy for ‘Christianisation’: Adityanath

BASTI (UP), JUN 20 (PTI): In a controversial remark, BJP MP Yogi Adityanath has said Nobel Laureate Mother Teresa was part of a “conspiracy for Christianisation of India”. “Teresa was part of a conspiracy for Christianisation of India. Incidents of Christianisation had led to separatist movements in parts of NorthEast, including Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Meghalaya and Nagaland,” the Gorakhpur MP said. Addressing a Ram Katha programme here on Saturday, he said, “You all are unaware of the situation in NE. You should visit there to see the real situation.” Last year, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat had in a similar comment said Mother Teresa’s service to the poor was aimed at converting them to Christianity. On the issue of Ram temple in Ayodhya, Adityanath said no one can stop it from being constructed. “When they could not stop kar sewaks from demolishing the Babri mosque, how will they be able to stop us from carrying out construction,” he said. On alleged exodus of Hindus from Kairana, he said they were forced to leave Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan and at that time no one raised the issue of “intolerance”. “Exodus of Hindus from Kairana is a result of pseudosecularism and appeasement policies pursued by different governments in Uttar Pradesh...

Yogi Adityanath

Because of this, the population of Hindus which was once 68 per cent has come down to 8 per cent (in Kairana),” he alleged. Notably, Adityanath on mirred in another controversy on June 1 when he said that action should be taken against Mohammed Akhlaq’s family for eating beef and the compensation given to the family should be taken back. Akhlaq, a resident of Bisara village near Dadri in Uttar Pradesh, was lynched by a Hindu mob on September 28 last year for allegedly possessing and eating beef. The incident, which drew attention of international media, was widely condemned in India. Yogi’s remarks came after a report from a forensic lab in Mathura emerged, saying that the meat seized in the case was actually beef. “It is a crime in Uttar Pradesh to slaughter cow and possess or eat its meat. Akhlaq’s family has indulged in this crime. Action should be taken against them for this,” the

Bharatiya Janata Party MP said. “Secondly, the compensation given to Akhlaq’s family by the government should be taken back,” he added. He also asked for releasing the persons arrested by the state police for Akhlaq’s murder. An earlier report by Dadri Deputy Chief Veterinary Officer Y.S. Tomar had declared the meat found in Akhlaq home was mutton and not beef. After the Mathura lab’s report came out, Tomar said he had only “visually examined” the meat and the forensic lab’s report should be seen as the final report. However, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav raised questions about the relevance of the report, saying nothing objectionable was found in Akhlaq’s home. “From where was this meat sample collected? As you may recall, nothing objectionable was found in Akhlaq’s household or his fridge. Everyone wants justice in this case, the family (Akhlaq’s) deserves justice as one of their members has been murdered,” the chief minister said. “What one eats, what one wears, what language one speaks...I think we should keep away from such unnecessary controversies,” he added. Akhlaq’s brother Jaan Mohammed questioned the veracity of the report, saying that the meat sample in question was not collected from their family fridge.

national More delay in OROP; panel’s term extended NEW DELHI, JUN 20 (PTI): The tenure of the committee formed on implementation of One Rank One Pension (OROP) scheme has been extended by six months upto the middle of December this year. The government recently amended the gazette notification issued last year under which the committee headed by former Chief Justice of Patna High Court Justice (Retd) L Narasimha Reddy was scheduled to submit its report by June 14. With the extension, the implementation of OROP may take more time as the panel can submit its report by December 14, official sources said. The government had announced implementation of OROP on November 7, 2015 to benefit over 25 lakh ex-servicemen and war widows. The OROP mandates payment of uniform pension to the armed forces personnel retiring in the same rank with the same length of service, regardless of their date of retirement, which implies that bridging the gap between the rate of pension of current and past pensioners at periodic intervals. The other Terms of Reference of the Committee will continue which include measures for the removal of anomalies that may arise in the implementation of the OROP as notified by the government.

Countdown begins for launch of ISRO’s Cartosat-2 series, 19 other satellites

2008 serial blast accused nabbed from Karnataka

CHENNAI, JUN 20 (PTI): A 48-hour countdown began Monday for the launch of record 20 satellites, including India’s latest earth observation Cartosat-2 Series Satellite, onboard PSLV C-34 from Sriharikota on June 22. The countdown began at 9.26 AM after the launch authorisation board (LAB) gave the clearance for the mission yesterday and the process of filling the fuel was underway, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said. After creating a record in 2008 for placing 10 satellites into various low earth orbits in a single launch, ISRO is all set for the new record of launching 20 satellites, including those from the US, Germany, Canada and Indonesia. ISRO’s workhorse Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C34) is scheduled to liftoff with the satellites at 9.26 AM from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota, about 100 km from here in Andhra Pradesh, on June 22. India’s earth observation spacecraft Cartosat-2 Series satellite, which is similar to the earlier Cartosat-2, 2A and 2B, and 19 co-passenger satellites together weighing about 560 kg at lift-off would be injected into a 505 km polar Sun Synchronous Orbit. According to ISRO, the total weight of all the 20 satellites is about 1,288 kg. The co-passengers include satellites from the US, Canada, Germany and Indonesia as well as two satellites

AHMEDABAD, JUN 20 (PTI): The Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) has arrested an alleged SIMI operative, who was wanted in the 2008 serial bomb blasts in the city, from Belgam in Karnataka. On a specific tip off, ATS officials nabbed one Nasir Rangrez (38), an auto rickshaw driver, from his residence at Khade Bazar road in Belgam yesterday and brought him here this morning, ATS said in a statement. According to officials who nabbed him, Rangrez was part of larger conspiracy, hatched by terror outfits Indian Mujahideen (IM) and Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), to spread terror in Gujarat to avenge the killings of Muslims during post-Godhra riots. “Before carrying out the blasts in the city, Rangrez along with many other accused associated with SIMI and IM recruited Muslim men to take revenge of riots and provided them training at Pavagadh in Gujarat, Khandwa in Madhya Pradesh and Waghamon in Kerala,” the statement said. “Rangrez, a member of SIMI, was actively involved in providing training to youths in the terror camp of Waghamon. During these training sessions, these accused hatched the conspiracy to carry out blasts in Ahmedabad. These accused were led by IM founders Safdar Nagori and Yasin Bhatkal,” it said. According to ATS sub inspector C R Jadav, Rangrez never came to Ahmedabad to plant the bombs.

Differences over Left-Cong tie-up: CPI(M) leader expelled Kataria abuses Manmohan; Cong condemns coming third after TMC and Congress, saw a large chunk of its members opposing the tieup, a line which was defended by the top brass and the party expelling CC member and AIDWA General Secretary Jagmati Sangwan for “gross indiscipline”. In a statement ahead of an official briefing on the three-day CC meeting, the party said “the Central Committee of the CPI(M) now

in session in New Delhi has decided to expel Jagmati Sangwan (member of the Central Committee) from the primary membership of the Party for gross indiscipline.” However, Sangwan maintained she had announced in the meeting itself that she was quitting the party and all posts. When her reaction was sought, she said “I told the meeting it was a wrong decision to have the tie-up which

was a violation of the party’s political-tactical line.” “The political-tactical line and democratic centralism are the life-line of a communist party which have to be maintained at all cost,” Sangwan, who led the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA), told PTI. Asked what was the act of “gross indiscipline” by her for which she was expelled,

Sangwan said “you should ask that question to them. I had announced my decision to resign from the party and the CC at the meeting itself.” For the past two days, the CPI(M) CC has been focussing its discussion on the West Bengal results and alliance with the Congress, besides considering review reports on its performance in the recent assembly polls in five states.

Usha and her husband Lalkeshwar Singh. PATNA, JUN 20 (IANS): Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB) former chairman Lalkeshwar Prasad Singh and his wife Usha Sinha were arrested on Monday in connection with the state Class 12 examination toppers scam, police said. Lalkeshwar Prasad and Usha Sinha were arrested from Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, Patna Senior Superintendent of Police Manu Maharaj, who heads the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the Class 12 toppers scam, said. He said the couple will be brought here on Monday and interrogated by a separate team of the SIT. Meanwhile, Bihar Police recovered a country-made pistol and five live cartridges from the office of Amit Kumar alias Bachcha Rai, the alleged kingpin in the toppers scam. He was arrested on June 11 after he surrendered to the police. Said to be a supporter of the ruling Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Bachha Rai is the principal of the V.R. College in Bihar’s Vaishali district. He is alleged to have been manipulating, in collusion with the BSEB, the merit list of Class 12 examinees in favour of students who paid him bribes. “Police have lodged a case against Bachcha Rai under the Arms Act after recovery of the pistol and five live rounds. We will now again seek his custody,” Maharaj said. After facing flak from the opposition over the toppers’ scam, leaders of Bihar’s ruling Grand Alliance of Janata Dal-United (JD-U), Rashtriya Janata Dal JD and Congress said the guilty will not be spared. “Whoever has com-

mitted crime and corruption cannot escape the long hands of rule of law. The guilty will be punished,” state JD-U President Vashisht Narain Singh said, reacting to the arrest of the couple. RJD leader and Bihar’s Deputy Chief Minister Tejaswi Yadav said he has full faith in Bihar Police who have already arrested Lalkeshwar Prasad Singh and his wife Usha Sinha. Bihar state Congress President and Bihar’s Education Minister Ashok Choudhary said the accused will face justice. Opposition leader Jitan Ram Manjhi, however, demanded that the toppers scam should be probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Manjhi is former Bihar Chief Minister and belongs to the Hindustani Awam Morcha party. Last week, a Patna civil court issued an arrest warrant against Lalkeshwar Prasad, who until recently headed the BSEB which conducts the Class 10 and 12 examinations in Bihar. Lalkeshwar Prasad went underground after resigning from the board. His wife Usha Sinha, who is former Janata Dal-United (JD-U) legislator of Bihar, was also missing since the time her name surfaced in the scam. So far, 10 persons have been arrested in the case, the police said. The scam surfaced after Aaj Tak TV channel showed a sting in which two Class 12 toppers could not answer even elementary questions about the subjects they ‘topped’ in.

Hindrance from neglect

I

f at all, people living in far flung areas of Nagaland have been feeling neglected ; then there has to be a reason, since this perception has been there for several decades. One of the factors that has given rise to such a perception is certainly absenteeism by government servants. Despite this practice being rampant, nothing much has been done by the authorities. Such a practice has left people in far flung areas of the state in a state of frustration when employees play truant as has been revealed in several districts where organizations and individuals have lodged strong protest with the government. It is a fact that most if not many, Government servants posted out to the far flung districts play truant and hardly spend a week or less before returning back to their home districts. When government employees play truant, they contribute to the neglect of the government’s efforts to serve the people in those areas. By and large, most government servants prefer to be posted either at Kohima or Dimapur, with the latter being the most favoured place for posting. As a consequence of this phenomenon, a situation has developed, whereby people in far flung areas of the state have unfortunately resigned to their fate. There may be reasons why government servants in general who are posted to far flung areas, are disinclined to be at their posting places to perform their duties. Though there are certain criteria for transfer and posting, yet in practice, political backing and connection serve as the primary criteria that over rules other considerations. This has only opened the Pandora box that expose nepotism and favouritism. Those who do not have political patrons of support of powerful bureaucrats have no other choice and at times, are kicked around like football. Buying of post and posting are much speculated under various departments. Departments that are considered as providers of essential services should take stock of the contributions to ensure that rural areas get the benefit meant for people. Unlike other departments, doctors under the medical department and engineers in the power department, are an essential ingredient of the government’s attempt to serve the people. It however does not mean, that truancy among government servants in other departments should be overlooked. Relevant rules and conventions regarding transfer and posting should be adhered to and the bureaucracy should ensure transparency and accountability. The politicians should also learn to accept the nature of works expected to be performed by giving the bureaucrats freedom to exercise the yardstick. It must be noted that when government servants are able to manipulate transfer and posting, it only leads to contempt for the established rules and convention. This has been one of the contributing factors for neglect of the people. The greatest loss is the public who are deprived of services from their government. Even political parties suffer when politicians interfere in the day to day works. Truancy in the government, has to be checked and all efforts should be made at bringing about development would amount to nothing.

DailyDevotion Have You Come to “When” Yet? The Lord restored Job’s losses when he prayed for his friends. —Job 42:10 A pitiful, sickly, and self-centered kind of prayer and a determined effort and selfish desire to be right with God are never found in the New Testament. The fact that I am trying to be right with God is actually a sign that I am rebelling against the atonement by the Cross of Christ. I pray, “Lord, I will purify my heart if You will answer my prayer— I will walk rightly before You if You will help me.” But I cannot make myself right with God; I cannot make my life perfect. I can only be right with God if I accept the atonement of the Lord Jesus Christ as an absolute gift. Am I humble enough to accept it? I have to surrender all my rights and demands, and cease from every self-effort. I must leave myself completely alone in His hands, and then I can begin to pour my life out in the priestly work of intercession. There is a great deal of prayer that comes from actual disbelief in the atonement. Jesus is not just beginning to save us— He has already saved us completely. It is an accomplished fact, and it is an insult to Him for us to ask Him to do what He has already done. If you are not now receiving the “hundredfold” which Jesus promised (see Matthew 19:29), and not getting insight into God’s Word, then start praying for your friends— enter into the ministry of the inner life. “The Lord restored Job’s losses when he prayed for his friends.” As a saved soul, the real business of your life is intercessory prayer. Whatever circumstances God may place you in, always pray immediately that His atonement may be recognized and as fully understood in the lives of others as it has been in yours. Pray for your friends now, and pray for those with whom you come in contact now.

It takes so little to make a stranger’s day, and even less to totally ruin it. ~ Demetri Martin

A

nimal con artists are so sophisticated that they make us look like amateurs. Mimicry – in appearance, scent, sound and behaviour (for instance a harmless red milk snake will change its colours to look like a venomous coral snake), camouflage, feigning death or injury, adopting threatening poses, verbal and tactical deception and straight out lying are some of the tricks they use to get food, save themselves or win contests. Some harmless species imitate poisonous species. Some change their behaviour so that the prey is lured in. A parent bird will feign a broken wing to attract a predator away from its defenceless offspring. Some moths use an effective stratagem against bats. When they hear the ultrasound emitted by hunting bats, they produce loud clicks to mimic the unpalatable Tiger moth so that they are not targeted. The “two-headed” snake of Central Africa has a tail that resembles a head and a head that resembles a tail. The snake even moves its tail in the way most snakes move their heads. This confuses the prey as to where the attack is originating from. So many animals change their colouring to become invisible in their surroundings.

Uroplatus geckos can become completely invisible. Katydids can change their body colouring and shape to match entire leaves, half-eaten leaves, dying leaves, leaves with bird droppings, sticks, twigs, and tree bark. Different chameleon species are able to change colours which include pink, blue, red, orange, green, black, brown, light blue, yellow, turquoise and purple. Some octopuses can use muscles in the skin to change both colour and texture taking on the spiky appearance of seaweed, or the scraggly, bumpy texture of a rock among other disguises. The mimic octopus combines its highly flexible body with its colour-changing ability to look like more dangerous animals such as lionfish, sea snakes and eels. A wide range of animals, lizards, birds, rodents, beetles and sharks, will pretend to be dead, to avoid being killed, as predators will usually take only live prey. The male nursery web spider feigns death to avoid getting eaten by females during mating. Some appear more threatening than they actually are. Mantis shrimps have front limbs known as smashers to attack. Baby mantis shrimps bluff by spreading their front limbs, even though

Some change their behaviour their still-soft bodies mean that they cannot use their smashers without damaging themselves Cuttlefish are amazing. They are able to simultaneously communicate two entirely different displays to two different observers. When a male cuttlefish courts a female in the presence of other males, he displays two different sides: a male pattern facing the female (courtship), and a female pattern facing away, to deceive other males. Female marsh harrier courted a male to obtain access to food he had stored. She then took this food and fed it to chicks which had been fathered by another male. Ravens hide their food in caches. But if they feel they have been spied on, they frequently change cache sites, or recover their food items. Apes are masters in tactical deception. A well-known

example involves a chimpanzee that was approached from behind by a loud aggressive rival. The chimpanzee manipulated his lips several times before losing his fear grin and only after he had done so, he turned around to face the challenger, concealing his fearful expression. In another experiment food was hidden and only one individual, named Belle, in a group of chimpanzees, was informed of the location. Belle was eager to lead the group to the food but when one chimpanzee, named Rock, began to refuse to share the food, Belle changed her behaviour. She began to sit on the food until Rock was far away, and then she would uncover it quickly and eat it. In an attempt to speed the process up, Rock looked away until Belle began to run for the food. On several occasions he would even walk away, acting disinterested, and

then suddenly spin around and run towards Belle just as she uncovered the food. Baboons use an exaggerated “looking” gesture which means the detection of a predator, to avoid attack by an adult male. Junior Tufted Capuchins employ a vocal form of tactical deception when competing with dominant monkeys over valuable food resources. They will use alarm calls normally reserved for predator sightings to make the rest run away and then take advantage of the distraction to pilfer food. The Alcon Blue butterfly caterpillar drops to the ground and emits a scent that fools Myrmica ants into believing that she is one of their own – only just a little bigger. They take her into their nest and feed and take care of her as if she is a queen. As soon as the caterpillar changes into a butterfly she escapes the nest before she is attacked. There are Australian spiders that smell and behave like ants: some are so convincing that the ants will allow a spider to live permanently as one of them. This spider will then feast upon its new friends, but it won’t eat all the ants, or even a significant number; instead, it extracts resources slowly, sustainably, and over time.

Post-mortem

O

n June 13, 2016 a highly agitated NSCN (IM) dubbed ACAUT as a “nuisance”. Since this ‘nuisance’ title is being bestowed on ACAUT against the backdrop of exposures related to an obnoxious subject of unreasonable taxation by all the NPGs with NSCN (IM) as the flagship and the prevalent general corruption in the non-transparent working system within the State Government... ACAUT ought to feel extremely honoured for this distinction like it was receiving a prestigious National award. What is however rather difficult to comprehend is the arrogant uncompromising stance of a dictatorial NCSN (IM), trapped in a time zone of the past that no longer is in tune with the present reality. That a tame, compliant Naga tribal representation exists within the ranks of NSCN (IM) is acknowledged...but that these other tribal presence purely serving the purpose of a cosmetic window dressing is also clear for all to see. That this organization is exclusively dominated by our brothers from south of the boarder in all matters that matter, is an equally undeniably fact. The knowledge that the entire Naga populace have shared the same living space with Dracula organizations in silent fear, preferring to suffer their very lifeline being remorselessly drained out of them every second, every minute, every hour, every day, every week, every month, every year...for more than half a century ... is the wonder of wonders that either describes the inbuilt mega level of patience or the mega level of cowardice in the Naga race. It speaks volumes about the true colour of Naga courage that we often over-extenuate elsewhere beyond our boundary but disappears as we crawl into our own little holes, idol worshiping AK 47 in our own backyard with fear. On the one hand, no one wants to raise any legitimate questions against greed mandated irrational multiple taxations in the name of ‘sovereignty’ and ‘integration’... which NSCN (IM) have effectively given up on and publically affirmed by no less a personality than Mr. Muivah himself. On the other hand if NSCN (IM) is actually living amongst the people in our part of the planet, they ought to have at least been getting honest feedbacks against all their cold blooded merciless acts of extortion and against their arrogant inability to climb down from their high horse and facilitate a

A nuisance called ACAUT

united front without expecting other factions to kneel before them first for unity under them. NSCM (IM) must now explain their legitimacy behind the continuation of taxing the people if ‘sovereignty’ and ‘integration’ is no longer an issue. Pray enlighten the masses: What other Nagas aspirations remain unfulfilled for NSCN (IM) to sustain this taxation madness? Pray tell us what other substantial Naga ID is being attempted to be salvaged beyond what 16-PA/ Article-371 (A) have already accomplished? Instead of controlling and streamlining their abnormal extortion policies that have crippled the masses, they turn around to curse, threaten, insult and ban ACAUT for being the mouthpiece of the downtrodden common man and for exposing their insane lust for money in the name of ‘sovereignty’ and ‘integration’ that no longer is relevant in their national agenda. That the younger generation of Nagas are the ones paying a costly price for their hypocrisy is not even a subject of their concern. The Government of Nagaland has reached a saturation point in not being able to absorb all the educated youngsters into government service except through non-transparent, despicable ‘backdoor’ appointments of the privileged few with political or bureaucratic connections against non-existing posts. Under such helpless circumstances, each youngster trying their level best to eke out a modest honourable living through private entrepreneurship are being faced with serious roadblocks leading to business failure because of the irrational greed induced multiple taxation/extortion being imposed on them without exception by the NSCN (IM)...along with their equally ravenous factional ‘sovereignty warrior’ counterparts. The economy of our common people is withering under the uncompromising soil of NPG taxations. Can a picture of depraved ‘national’ future be more vividly and pathetically painted than this with a handicapped younger generation being forced into choice-less penury? The Nagas have become accustomed to the forked tongue diplomacy of the Indian Government. They have entered into agreement after agreements with the Nagas over the years many of which have unilaterally been dishonoured even before the ink is dry. One wonders therefore, what will be the fate of this “Framework Agreement” when they run into rough patches on

the road. Very technically speaking, this agreement has not been signed with the Government of India proper but with an Interlocutor who at best is a nonentity postman to the Prime Minister... nowhere in the hierarchical food chain of accountability within a legitimate Government of India. The once loftily flaunted ‘agreement’ that the talk would be conducted in a Third Country, at the Prime Ministerial level has been reduced to our own backyard negotiation and agreement with a nonentity retired bureaucrat. That the Prime Minister and the Home Minister of India were in attendance to watch this effacing escapade only confirms the status of the so-called ‘framework agreement’ to be an agreement within the Indian Constitution just as much as ‘Shillong Accord 1975’ or the 16 PA was. If one wants to get critical, one can very well comment that Mr. Th. Muivah ought to have exercised self-restraint by observing honourable protocol as per the earlier laid down ‘understanding’ to settle matters at the Prime Ministerial level and let someone below him sign this “Framework Agreement” instead. But it obviously seems that his ‘super ego radar’ must have been under repair at that time. Some would say Mr. Th. M signing this document himself with an Interlocutor on the other side of the table has significantly reduced the Naga National status ... but the Nagas are trying their best to refrain from saying so. But Mr. M continues to add insults to injury by his refusal to share the contents of the “Framework” with his own people that he claims to represent and only demand for a blind faith endorsement... which he has in fact received from the spineless, brainless unquestioning minority. The NSCN (IM) appears to actively be leading the Nagas down the political stairs a step at a time while the rest of our NPGs have been sitting on the fence all these years under ‘cease fire’ comfort zone with absolutely nothing to write home about besides their pathetic taxation stories. While our factional sovereignty warriors are adamantly unprepared to unite for a common political cause, they are united in upholding a common financial obsession of bleeding the masses... forcing the people to climb their respective ‘out of control’ taxation staircase at gun point. Where is the rationality in all of this? It is up to the unfortunate Nagas born into the present generation as ‘beasts of burden’

to “sovereign greed” of our NPGs who must wake up and answer this question by action. ACAUT is only trying to ring the alarm bell for all to wake up to champion the cause of UNITY of the Nagas for all our sakes! Therefore, instead of wasting everyone’s time threatening and banning ACAUT, the NSCN (IM) should pragmatically accept reality that the future of the Nagas is not their exclusive preserve to decide: If they (NSCN-IM) is unable to bring home sovereignty/ integration...most tax fatigued Nagas could very well unbuckle and say “so be it”... provided the final settlement is arrived at with the blessing of every faction as equals. Failing to see this will invariably lead Nagas to another civil war. It is a standard expected retaliatory reaction of NSCN (IM) to camouflage their lesser ways with threats. They continue to insult ACAUT as an Indian Agent. ACAUT has absolutely no hidden agenda and can only be described as true Naga Nationalists; ACAUT sincerely appealing to all NPGs to unite for the greater good of the Nagas may sound treasonous to the southern ears and agendas of NSCN (IM),...but the bottom-line belief of ACAUT has been that Nagas are prepared to pay any honourable National tax as long as all factions are united to achieve one united sovereignty or else a united solution. Without this united effort it is a futile exercise of fooling the people for the self- gratification of their own species. NSCN (IM) should know that ACAUT is not an NGO. It is a people’s movement just being helped along by a handful of young committed people... morally binding themselves to stay the course till the people of Nagaland find their pride and their courage to make the difference. Threaten a people’s sentiment being represented by ACAUT and NSCN (IM) must face the wrath of all the tribes. Mukalimi would then be peanuts in comparison. District ACAUT wings of Wokha, Phek and even Tuli sub-division have shown true grit and courage in helping and mobilising the common men to find their manly feet in their respective sectors. It is a challenging time and all of them deserve a pat on the back and the people’s unreserved appreciation and support. Kudos to a nuisance called ACAUT! Khekiye K. Divine vision concerning the North East India

T

he Bible Heb 12:25, “make sure that you obey the one who speaks to you. The people did not escape, when they refuse to obey the one who spoke to them at Mt. Sinai. Do you think you can possibly escape, if you refuse to obey the one who speak to you from heaven? Even though I am unworthy and deserve nothing good for our Lord; yet occassionaly, He speaks to me by audible voice and show me by trance/ vision because He don’t want anybody to perish without warning. Bible Ezek 33:11 says “ as I live says the Lord, I have no pleasure I the death of the wicked; but that wicked turned from his way and live. Turn, turn from evil way! For why should you die, oh house of Israel.” Bible Ezek 33:9 says “nevertheless, if you warn the wicked to turn from his wicked way but he does not turn, he shall die in his iniquity, but you have delivered your soul.” On 7th April 2003, at Jotsoma village prayer centre, near Sc. College, Kohima, while I was on three-day prayer programme, in the morning at around 4 a.m, the Lord showed me

a sketch map of India laying on the ground and I began to look down at the map. At this time the Lord allowed me to hear an audible voice saying, “China is attacking India” suddenly without human hands a bog fishing net was thrown over the map and covered it. Again from another man of God, late Merithung Mozhui, Wokha Nagaland an aged man of 97, related to me to convey this message to the North East India since he was already old. That on 9th April, 2004, the Lord gave him a scripture portion from Psalm 60:6 which read thus, “from his sanctuary God has said, in triumph I will divide Shechem and distribute the valley of Succoth to my people.” (Good News Bible) Though I read carefully again and again but could not understand its meaning. The I enquired of the Lord a couple of days to know the meaning. But after much prayers the Lord began to speak to me that, (1) North East of India is to be cut off. (2) And the valley of Brahmaputra shall be measured out, (3) The eastern valley along with its surrounding hills shall

be given to Nagaland. (4) There shall be a single unity and they shall call themselves United States of Nagaland (USON), (5) These things shall surely come true, but after much pang (sharp pain, agony and sadness.) It is the duty of men and women to repent and live righteously and do the will of God. You will fine in Math 7:21 not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord shall enter the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Bible John 9:4 Jesus said, “the night cometh no man can work.” There are two nghts, coming ahed of us: One is kingdom shall rise against kingdom, another is religious system government to blaspheme/mock against God for 42 months. Bible Deut. 18:22 the word of God said, “if a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord and what he says does not come true, then it is not the Lord’s message. That the prophet has spoken in his own authority, and you are not to fear.” Rev. N. Kikon, Jesus in the Lord Ministry

The Giant Geometer Moth Caterpillars take camouflage to the next level, incorporating elements of whatever plant they’re eating, into their bodies – and end up smelling like the stick. This strategy fools hungry ants who march all over the moth larvae. If the same caterpillars are put onto a plant they have not sampled, the ants attack. The harlequin filefish lives among coral reefs in the Indian Ocean. The fish fends off potential predators by eating – and smelling – like the Acropora coral it calls home. Coral-dwelling crabs or predatory cods can’t tell the difference between the smell of the coral eating filefish and the coral itself. But it’s not just about avoiding being eaten. Some sneaky moths, like male Asian Corn Borers, imitate bat sounds to make females freeze in fear, then take the opportunity to mate with them. These males are not good at copulation so they use this trick to improve their odds. Male yellow peach moths do even better. They use a similar sonic hoax to scare away rivals when they are in pursuit of a female. To join the animal welfare movement contact gandhim@nic.in,www.peopleforanimalsindia.org

Reminiscence of my experiences with the Naga general. (Obu)

rowing up as a child who unfortunately never had the privilege to see nor address someone as “Obu” (grandfather) from both my paternal as well as maternal side, I naively associated the term with my paternal uncle late Gen. A. Maken who was married to my father’s eldest sister Mrs. Yashilemla. But as I grew older over the years, calling him “Obu” became very significant and it always felt like I was in the presence of my real grandfather. He was a man of principles. A man with immense knowledge, always ready to share it with the people that took an interest in it. As a child I often wondered how people from different walks of life would continually visit him and sit for tedious hours. Tedious indeed from a child’s perspective. I vividly remember how hours would just fly by like some few minutes when I engaged in a conversation with him. From what I could tell, he was always looking forward to immerse himself in deep conversations which never ceased to provoke the mind. On one such occasion, while I had just started doing my M.phil dissertation, I consulted him regarding some historical facts and socio-cultural practices of the Ao tribe, Longkhum village in particular. I had my questions answered and we drifted away from the topic. He said, “Do you find anything wrong with the word ‘Educated’?” Like most people often do, I scratched my head. I knew what the word ‘Educated’ meant but I definitely knew that it was not what he was asking for. So I remained silent, still trying to utter a word. So he went on to his next question and said “what is educated unemployed/unemployment?” This seemed fairly easy to answer and I mumbled all those we read in the newspapers about our youth being unemployed even after obtaining degrees and qualifications, the high level of corruption so on and so forth. Complaint against the accountant & customer assistant SBI Phek

Sir,

On 29th March 2016, I approached the SBI Phek for opening of my sister’s new account with all requisite documents. However, the accountant and the customer assistant of the same bank abruptly refused to accept my application form for want of Aadhaar card as mandatory even though I had produced voter’s identity card/driving license as proof of my identity. The same officers were adamant that I produce my Aadhaar card along with the voter’s ID card which as per the criteria of opening an account is an option rather than mandatory, even the supreme court had often notified that possession of Aadhaar card is not compulsorily mandatory so, why are the bank officials of the Phek SBI insisting on this Aadhaar card only? As per specification laid down in pages of account opening form producing any of the following is purely an option namely, passport, voter’s identity card, driving license, Aadhaar card, MNREGA card, pan card or nay other officially valid documents. Unfortunately my application has been kept pending for the whole three months despite several appeals. Hence, I hereby appeal to your high authority for justice and investigate the matter at the earliest and take timely action upon the erring officials of the SBI, Phek. V. K. Alex, Chairman Cheroh Society

NEW DELHI, JUN 20 (PTI): BJP MP Subramanian Swamy Monday mounted a sharp attack on Delhi Lt Governor Najeeb Jung, accusing him of seeking “guidance” of Congress President Sonia Gandhi’s Political Secretary Ahmed Patel. He made the attack on Jung while joining a protest by BJP MP Maheish Girri, who demanded an apology from Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for linking him to the murder of an NDMC official. Separately, Swamy, in a letter to President Pranab Mukherjee, said he has information to suggest that the Jung was playing a “mischievous role” in “abetting” Kejriwal at the behest of Congress to embarrass BJP. “He (Jung) has no work other than making rounds of Ahmed Patel’s place. He (Jung) should have spoken out for MPs like Girri and he should have ordered Kejriwal to provide documents or apologise,” Swamy told reporters. He also said Jung should have categorically told Kejriwal that if he does not substantiate his allegations against Girri or apologise, then he would recommend to the Centre dismissal of the AAP government.

NDMC Vice Chairman Karan Singh Tanwar, who was present at the demonstration site, said he would file civil and criminal defamation suits against Kejriwal. NEW DELHI, JUN 20 (PTI): An all-out war broke out between BJP and AAP today after East Delhi MP Mahiesh Girri sat on an “indefinite fast” a few metres away from Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s residence even as the latter kept on demanding the former’s “arrest” in connection with the murder of an NDMC official. BJP MPs Subramanian Swamy and Manoj Tiwari and party general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya lent weight to Girri’s protest, who has vowed not to end his fast till the AAP chief “apologises”. Swamy launched a scathing attack on Lt Governor Najeeb Jung, accusing him of taking Congress’ guidance. Vijayvargiya said he has urged Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh to order a probe into the case so that all the doubts are cleared. Girri also wrote to the Delhi Police Commissioner saying that he was ready to be questioned and face arrest if the probe demands so. Moody’s conclusions were contained in a just-released report on India’s securitisation market, “New Regulations Pave Way for Market’s Transformation; Improved Creditor Rights”. “Together, these three changes will help -- as indicated -- further develop India’s structured finance market, and allow securitisation to play a bigger role as a source of funding in the economy, an objective promoted by the government,” said Tordo.

Chennai, Jun 20 (IANS): Global credit rating agency Moody’s Investors Service on Monday said the three recent regulatory changes made by India will have transformative implications for its structured finance market. “The changes will improve returns to investors, promote foreign investment, and improve the resolution process in the event of default, thereby strengthening creditor rights,” Vincent Tordo, an analyst with Moody’s, was quoted as saying in a statement. “Specifically, the measureas are a new tax regime that will lift post-tax investment returns from securitisation trusts; changes in regard to foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) that will encourage foreign investment and changes to deal

in 2017-2018 and 7.8 percent in 2018-2019. World Bank’s country director in India Onno Ruhl said: “There are good reasons for confidence in India’s nearterm prospects.” “However, a pickup in investments is crucial to sustain economic growth in the longer term. The recently approved bankruptcy code is helpful in this regard, and once it is implemented it will help unleash the productivity that Indian firms need in order to create jobs, and become globally competitive,” Ruhl added. The most significant near and medium-term risks stem from the banking sector and its ability to finance private investment, which continues to face several impediments in the form of excess global capacity, regulatory and policy challenges, in addition to corporate debt overhang, according to the update. It further noted that due to greater devolution of the spending power by the centre, states are now responsible for 57% of the expenditure, which accounts for 16% of GDP.

In this connection, she said India produces 17 lakh tonnes of pulses annually, as against the requirement of 23 lakh tonnes, and the country has been importing pulses for decades. “We are already in talks with these countries and hope to make government-to-government arrangements so that whenever market prices of pulses rise, the government is able to infuse its stocks in the market to stablise the prices,” she added.

New Delhi, Jun 20 (PTI): India needs to activate “stalled engines”, including private investment and rural demand, to sustain 7.6% growth rate in the coming years, World Bank said today. The country’s economy expanded at a faster pace in 2015-16 even as a number of its growth engines stalled, it said. “Agriculture -- having faced two consecutive drought years -- rural household consumption, private investments and exports have not performed to potential,” said the India Development Update, a twice yearly report released here. It also said that to remain on this path and sustain 7.6% growth in 2016-17, the challenge for the Indian economy is to activate the stalled engines – agricultural growth, rural demand, trade and private investment, while ensuring that demand from urban households and public investments do not run out of fuel. The update expects economic growth to be at 7.6% in 2016-2017 followed by a modest acceleration to 7.7%

New Delhi, Jun 20 (IANS): Healthcare providers in India are expected to spend $1.2 billion on information technology (IT) products and services this year -- an increase of 3.4% over 2015 -- a report said on Monday. “Healthcare spending is expected to reach $339 million in 2016, growing 5.2% over 2015,” said Moutusi Sau, principal research analyst at a global market research firm Gartner. IT services, which includes consulting, software support, implementation, hardware, IT outsourcing (ITO) and business process outsourcing (BPO), will continue to be the largest overall spending category within the healthcare providers sector. “The BPO sub-segment will record the fastest growth rate of 15.4% over 2015. ITO will be the largest sub-segment in IT services recording a 7.5% increase in 2016 to reach $107 million in 2016,” Sau added. The software market will grow 6% in 2016 to reach $106 million, up from $100 million in 2015. Infrastructure will grow 4.5% in 2016 to reach $43 million.

New Delhi, Jun 20 (IANS): In view of the prevailing shortage of pulses and their rising prices, India is negotiating with neighbouring Myanmar and other countries towards creating a buffer stock of up to eight lakh tonnes eventually, Commerce Minister Nirmala Sithraman said on Monday. “The government decided we will initially have 1 lakh tonnes of buffer stock both by procuring from farmers and by importing. Now that buffer stock limit has been enhanced. We will take it gradually, not immediately to 8 lakh tonnes,” Sitharaman told members of the Indian Women’s Press Dorps here. “So, Myanmar can supply us a few... In all probability we will be having a government-to-government import of pulses from Myanmar... the agreement will be signed soon. Mozambique, Malawi are countries we are having pulsesrelated talks,” she said. “As it is pulses can be imported by private traders without restriction. Unfortunately last year, because of speculation there was lot of price rise that was unwarranted,” the minister

Mumbai, Jun 20 (PTI): The rupee today ended lower by 23 paise to close at an over two-week low of 67.31 against the US currency on heavy bouts of dollar demand amid uncertainty in the wake of RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan’s decision against pursuing a second stint. Rajan, whose tenure as the RBI chief will end on September 4, had on last Saturday said he will not be seeking an extension as the governor. The home currency opened sharply lower at 67.65 per dollar as against the last weekend’s level of 67.08 at the Interbank Foreign Exchange (Forex) Market and dropped further to one-month low of 67.70 on initial heavy dollar demand.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in his Budget for 201617 had proposed to increase the turnover limit under the presumptive taxation scheme under section 44AD of the Income Tax Act to Rs 2 crore “which will bring big relief to a large number of assesses in the MSME category”.

Warning that a move to a sustained low-inflationary regime demands a lot difficult and painful adjustments in the short run, he said the rewards, however, are be many such as cheaper money for individuals and corporations as well as for the government. Noting that the past three years of inflation fighting has created a stable macro-environment, Rajan, who took over when the rupee was falling like nine pins and Balance of Payments was on a precarious position, said a “stable rupee has given investors confidence in our monetary policy goals, and this stability will only improve as we meet our inflation goals.” Urging the government and the new governor to stay the course, Rajan said going forward, the present stability “will ensure that foreign capital inflows will be more reliable and increase in the longer maturity buckets, including in rupee investments, which will expand the pool of capital available for our banks and corporations.

New Delhi, Jun 20 (PTI): The Finance Ministry on Monday said small businesses with a total turnover of up to Rs 2 crore will not be required to get their accounts audited if they opt for the presumptive taxation scheme. “The higher threshold (up to Rs 2 crore) for nonaudit of accounts has been given only to assessees opting for presumptive taxation scheme under section 44AD,” the ministry said in a statement. Mumbai, Jun 20 (PTI): Within days of announcing his decision to leave RBI in September, Governor Raghuram Rajan today hoped his successor and the new monetary policy committee will “stay the course” to ensure a low-inflation future for the country. “In the days ahead, a new governor as well as members of the monetary policy committee (MPC) will be picked. I am sure they will internalise the frameworks and institutions that have been set up, and should produce a low-inflation future for us,” Rajan said. The government has taken the “momentous step” of both setting a consumer price index-based inflation objective for the Reserve Bank as well as setting up an independent monetary policy committee (MPC), he said. Rajan on Saturday said would not accept a second term of governorship. Netanyahu signals Israel not ready to ratify N-test treaty

Death toll from Indonesia floods, landslides rises to 47 Banyumas, Jun 20 (AFP): The death toll from landslides and flooding in Indonesia rose to 47 on Monday, an official said, after hundreds of homes were engulfed by surging torrents of mud and rock. Rescuers used excavators and their bare hands to search through wrecked houses and earth for 15 villagers still missing after days of rain triggered the landslips and flash floods on mountainous Java island at the weekend. The natural disasters happened across densely populated Central Java province, with fastmoving walls of mud, rock and water engulfing buildings as they raced down hillsides and drivers were swept off roads. Villagers were trapped on their rooftops and watched helplessly as the rising floodwaters submerged their homes and cars. Disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said 47 people were confirmed dead and 15 were missing. Hundreds of homes were badly damaged, with some completely flattened. “People should be prepared as there is still a high

potential for flooding and landslides,” he warned. He said that a La Nina weather phenomenon, that typically causes unseasonably heavy rains, could have contributed to the weekend disasters. Java, which should be entering the dry season, has been hit by torrential downpours in recent weeks. Indonesia and other parts of Asia had been affected by a strong El Nino, which brings drought and sizzling temperatures and is often followed by a La Nina. He also blamed inadequate preparations, saying that his agency had warned local authorities that heavy rains were coming but it was not clear if they had taken action. The area worst affected by floods and landslides was Purworejo district, Nugroho said. Deaths were also reported in Banjarnegara and Kebumen districts. More than 400 rescuers were involved in search efforts. Evacuation centres, equipped with temporary shelters and kitchens, had been set up near the disaster zones.

Populist surge puts first woman in charge of Rome

Jerusalem, Jun 20 (AFP): Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu today said that Israel supports a treaty to ban nuclear testing but signalled his country was not yet ready to ratify a UN pact adopted by the UN nearly 20 years ago. Netanyahu’s office issued a statement on the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty after he met Lassina Zerbo, the head of the Vienna-based organisation which oversees it. The CTBT, adopted by the UN General Assembly in September 1996, bans all nuclear explosions. Israel, believed to be the Middle East’s sole if undeclared nuclear power, signed the treaty in 1996 but has yet to ratify it. The statement quoted Netanyahu as saying: “The state of Israel supports the treaty and its goals and has, therefore, signed the treaty. The prime minister added that the “issue of

Benjamin Netanyahu ratification depends on the regional context and the appropriate timing.” Israel strongly opposed last year’s nuclear deal between world powers and its arch-foe Iran, with Netanyahu arguing that it would not block the Islamic republic’s path to atomic weapons. Zerbo, executive secretary of the CTBT Organisa-

tion, expressed optimism that Israel was on track toward ratification. Speaking to AFP, he said Netanyahu “told me the issue of ratifying the treaty is a matter of ‘when, rather than if.’ “They are working on the conditions for the ‘when’. He said he was committed and supportive of the treaty.” The CTBT has been signed by 183 states and ratified by 164 including Russia, France and Britain, three of the nine countries which have, or are believed to possess, nuclear weapons. But to enter into force, the treaty needs 44 specific “nuclear technology holder” states to ratify it, eight of whom have yet to do so. The eight include the six in the nuclear club that have yet to ratify the pact - the US, China, India, Pakistan, North Korea and Israel - as well as Iran and Egypt.

Rohingya refugees at the Thechaung camp in Sittwe, western Myanmar’s Rakhine state. Geneva, Jun 20 (AFP): Widespread and ongoing violations against Myanmar’s Muslim Rohingya minority, including denial of citizenship, forced labour and sexual violence, could amount to crimes against humanity, the United Nations warned today. In a report on the human rights situation for minorities in Myanmar, the UN human rights office said it had found “a pattern of gross violations against the Rohingya...

(which) suggest a widespread or systematic attack... in turn giving rise to the possible commission of crimes against humanity if established in a court of law.” The report was published amid hope that Myanmar’s new government, steered by Aung San Suu Kyi and her pro-democracy party, will address deep hatreds in western Rakhine State. Bahrain revokes citizenship of top Shiite cleric Dubai, Jun 20 (AFP): Bahraini authorities have revoked the citizenship of the most prominent Shiite cleric in the Sunni-ruled kingdom, accusing him of sowing sectarian divisions, the interior ministry said today. Sheikh Isa Qassim, considered the spiritual leader of Bahrain’s Shiite majority, was alleged to have used his position to “serve foreign interests and promote... sectarianism and violence,” the ministry said in a statement carried by BNA state news agency. Qassim “adopted theocracy and stressed the absolute allegiance to the clergy,” the ministry said, adding that he had been in continuous contact with “organisations and parties that are enemies of the kingdom.” The decision follows the suspension of Bahrain’s main Shiite opposition group, Al-Wefaq, whose political chief Sheikh Ali Salman is serving a nine-year jail term for inciting violence.

them.” “It will not be easy to reverse such entrenched discrimination,” he said in a statement. Even so, “it must be a top priority to halt ongoing violations and prevent further ones taking place against Myanmar’s ethnic and religious minorities.” During its year-long probe, his office found “an alarming increase” in incitement to hatred and religious intolerance by ultranationalist Buddhist organisations against the Rohingya. Buddhist nationalists have staged protests across the country against even using the term Rohingya. They label the group “Bengalis”, casting Myanmar’s more than one million Rohingya as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh. Myanmar’s Rohingya population are denied citizenship even though many can trace their roots in the country back generations. Today’s report found that in addition to being denied their nationality, state security forces have committed a wide range of other violations against the Rohingya. These include summary executions, enforced disappearances, arbitrary arrests and detention, torture and illtreatment, and forced labour, the report found.

Families of EgyptAir crash victims to get compensation Cairo, Jun 20 (AFP): EgyptAir said today advance compensation payments of USD 25,000 will be offered to families of the 66 people killed when one of its planes crashed into the Mediterranean last month. The payments are separate to those expected from insurance companies on behalf of various parties depending on the investigation into the disaster. The Airbus A320 operating Flight MS804 from Paris to Cairo disappeared from radar screens between the Greek island of Crete and the north coast of Egypt on May 19. Among the passengers were 30 from Egypt, 15 from France, two Iraqis, two Canadians and one each from Algeria, Belgium, Britain, Chad, Portugal, Saudi Arabia and Sudan. Seven crew and three security personnel were also on board. “An insurance company will pay an advance of USD 25,000 after each family prepares its certificate of inheritance,” said EgyptAir chairman Safwat Musallam.

Kabul, Jun 20 (AFP): A busload of Nepali security guards were among 23 people killed in a string of bombings across Afghanistan today, days after Washington expanded the US military’s authority to strike the insurgents. The Taliban claimed the first attack which killed 14 Nepali security guards working for the Canadian Embassy in Kabul in a massive blast that left their yellow mini bus spattered with blood. The insurgents also claimed a second, smaller blast in south Kabul targeting a local politician that the interior ministry said killed one person and injured five others, including the politician. The Kabul blasts were followed just hours later by an attack on a market in the remote northeastern province of Badakhshan that authorities said killed at least eight people and wounded 18, with the death toll set to rise. The wave of violence comes ten days after Washington announced an expansion of the US military’s authority to conduct air strikes against the Taliban, a significant boost for

Rome, Jun 20 (AFP): Rome has elected populist Virginia Raggi as its first female mayor in a significant electoral reverse for Prime Minister Matteo Renzi. Exit polls yesterday gave the anti-establishment Five Star Movement’s candidate at least 60 per cent of the vote in a run-off contest with Roberto Giachetti of Renzi’s centre-left Democratic Party (PD). The 37-year-old lawyer and local councillor, a complete unknown only a few months ago, had been widely expected to claim the keys to City Hall. But the margin of her victory exceeded expectations with the exit polls pointing to her taking between 62 and 68 per cent of the vote. Polls suggested the PD had not suffered such big reverses elsewhere but the centre-left was in danger of losing control of the major northern cities Milan and Turin while holding on to Bologna and Naples. Victory in Rome is a major coup for the Five Star Movement (MS5) founded by comedian Beppe Grillo in 2009, which has since established itself as the major opposition force in Italian politics.

Launched in 1982 in France as the Fête de la Musique, it is now held on the same day in more than 700 cities in 120 countries. Completely different from a typical music festival, Make Music is open to anyone who wants to take part. Every kind of musician — young and old, amateur and

professional, of every musical persuasion — pours onto streets, parks, plazas, and porches to share their music with friends, neighbours, and strangers. All of it is free and open to the public. In 1982, Jack Lang and his staff at the Ministry of Culture dreamed up an idea for a new kind of musical holiday. They imagined a day where free, live music would be everywhere: street corners and parks, rooftops and gardens, store fronts and mountaintops. And, unlike a typical music festival, anyone and everyone would be invited to join and play music, or host performances. The event would take place on the summer solstice, June 21, and would be called Fête De La Musique. (In French, the name means both “festival of music” and “make music!”) Amazingly enough, this dream has come true. The Fête has turned into a true national holiday: France shuts down on the summer solstice and musicians take over. Almost 8% of the country (5 million people) have played an instrument or sung in public for the Fête de la Musique. Three decades later, the holiday has spread throughout the world and is now celebrated in more than 120 countries. In the U.S., the presenting sponsor is the NAMM Foundation. (Staff Reporter)

Alessandro Rosa Vieira

New Delhi, Jun 20 (PTI): World renowned futsal star Alessandro Rosa Vieira, also known as Falcao, today threw his weight behind the introduction of Premier Futsal League in India amid strong opposition from the country’s football federation. Citing “noninterference” from FIFA, Falcao felt it’s time All India Football Federation (AIFF) gave recognition to the firstever multi-national futsal league set to be played in India from July 15 to 24 with each game split into two halves of 20 minutes each.

In an interview, Falcao told PTI, “There are several private Futsal leagues that also happen world over and I have played in Dubai, Kuwait, USA etc. And they have never had any interference from AMF or FIFA.” “As a player, I feel this is a great opportunity to popularise the sport in India by bringing the best futsal players in the world. Premier Futsal and other Futsal tournaments will enhance the sporting ecosystem here and give people another sport to choose as a viewer, audience or a player.” After its launch, AIFF

President Praful Patel and Secretary Kushal Das expressed opposition to the league and declared that the body is mulling legal action. The AIFF even considered starting a similar tournament of its own, and this was not lost on Falcao, who is also called the ‘Pele of Futsal’. “Launch of Premier Futsal was the introduction of Futsal to India. I have heard since its launch, the India’s apex football body has also announced the launch of their own Futsal League and I think that is the biggest validation for Premier Futsal and for Futsal as a sport in general. Given the high intensity nature of the sport, the Indian youth is going to embrace Futsal,” the 39-year-old Brazilian from Sao Paulo said. Playing as a forward, Falcao has scored a staggering 932 goals in 697 club appearances as well as 339 strikes in 201 appearances for Brazil on the international front. Owing to his incredible success, Falcao achieved superstardom in the sport. He said, “Futsal is like religion to me. To get an opportunity to play the sport that has made me what I am today in front of so many people is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Asked what makes him think that Futsal would click in India and Falcao said the concept, which is fast growing in popularity, would go well with the fast developing Indian economy.

For James, the win not only marks his third NBA title, but it will go down as the single greatest achievement of his storied career as it fulfills his promise to deliver a title to his home state of Ohio. The back-and-forth game lived up to its billing as it was tight throughout and included 20 lead changes while no team was able to pull ahead by more than eight points. Facing elimination in each of their previous two games, James carried the Cavs back from the brink as they became only the third team to force a Game Seven after falling behind 3-1 in the championship round. Massachusetts, Jun 20 (IANS): Chile star Arturo Vidal was ecstatic after an incredible victory over Mexico that took them to the semifinals of the Copa America football tournament, but the midfielder remained wary of another meeting with Argentina skipper Lionel Messi, whom he named as the best player in the world. An incredible four-goal haul from Eduardo Vargas set the defending champions on the way to a crushing 7-0 victory on Saturday, setting up a last-four clash with Colombia. If they manage to overcome Columbia, Argentina or the United States will then await them in the final, and Vidal knows that Messi can make the difference. “Everybody knows what Messi is: he is the best player in the world,” the Bayern Munich star was quoted as saying by goal.com after their win against Mexico. “I said that because in that game a 2-1 defeat for Chile Argentina came out with intensity and started to pressure us, unlike in other games. But with Messi on the pitch everything changes.” A yellow card for Vidal against Mexico will keep him out of the semis, and he admits that missing such a big game is a significant blow. “I am sad, but confident in what my team-mates can do. These cames come with a risk, I hope I can play the final,” he said.

France, Switzerland in qtrs; Albania await fate India crush Zimbabwe by 10 wickets

Payet's late free-kick was heading goalwards before striking France team-mate Bacary Sagna. Lille, Jun 20 (IANS): Switzerland held hosts France to a goalless draw in their last Group A match here to book a berth in the round of 16 of the Euro 2016 football tournament. France, who had already qualified with two wins, topped the group with seven points, followed by Switzerland with five points. Switzerland had beaten Albania 1-0 and drew with Romania 1-1 in their earlier matches, reports Xinhua. Albania finally recorded their first point in Sunday night’s other game defeating

Romania 1-0 to finish third with three points. They will have to wait to find out if they go through as one of the four best third-placed teams. Romania were sent packing with only one point. “We played well and held firm. We’re through, we can rest up and it’s for other sides to push to play against us,” Switzerland manager Vladimir Petkovic said. France manager Didier Deschamps defended his decision to field an under-strength squad. “I am not blind. I realise we are capable of better perfor-

mances, but a second competition is beginning right now for us. It will begin next Sunday, we have got a long week and time to get prepared,” he said. “Technically Switzerland did some really good things as well, but we had the best chances. We can’t say they had a lot. With more composure and a bit of luck, we could have won this game. In terms of controlling the game, we should be able to do more and to avoid having to do so much defending.” Switzerland dominated possession but created no clear cut chances. It was France

However, phase 2 – open championship (U-13, U-15, U-17 and veterans) would be held at Kohima from July 27 to 29. Mixed double will be introduced in all the categories in trend with the national formats. A player will be allowed to participate in only 3 events in the open categories including mixed double, informed NBA.

Toulouse, Jun 20 (Agencies): Insisting that his style is very different from Cristiano Ronaldo, Wales midfielder Gareth Bale on Monday said he does not take the Portuguese football captain’s advice when it comes to taking free-kicks. Bale has netted twice from two free-kicks in the ongoing Euro 2016 and he could become the first ever footballer to score three in a single European Championship. Asked if his success with the free-kicks was due to Ronaldos advice, Bale said: “No, not really. I do it my way. I like my own style. We obviously practise together in training but on different sides. It depends where I am on the pitch and what side.”

who should have gone ahead thanks to efforts of their strikers Paul Pogba and Dimitri Payet. In the 13th minute, Pogba raced down from on high, played a one-two with Kingsley Coman and then fired a shot with left foot from a narrow angle. Switzerland goalkeeper Yann Sommer stopped it with a one-handed save. Four minutes later, the Juventus star lashed a leftfooter from 25 metres, but his effort hit the crossbar. He then initiated another attack in the 58th minute. After fine team work with Andre-Pierre Gig-

nac, he had a drive tipped over by a busy Sommer. Payet, who was sent on in the second half, hit the underside of the crossbar in the 75th minute and saw their chance of winning all three games evaporate. Sommer was named the man of the match for his great saves and Deschamps said: “When the goalkeeper is Man of the Match, that shows we had chances. You can always criticise players; I know the players are well aware that we can improve in a number of different areas. That said, but for a great goalkeeper and a few centimetres, or being more clinical, we could have scored goals.” Meanwhile in Lyon, Albania defeated Romania 1-0 in Group A in Lyon in one of the biggest upsets of Euro 2016. Armando Sadiku’s first-half header, his country’s first ever goal at a major tournament, sealed the historic victory. Gianni De Biasi’s men held on in the second half amid heavy Romania pressure, and subsequently gave themselves a genuine chance of qualifying for the knockout stages. De Biasi admitted that the Albanian squad face a nervous wait over the next few days. “We will have to prepare as if we have to play the Friday or Saturday. In the meantime we will be watching the other games,” the 60-year-old manager said. “If we stay in this tournament, we will give trouble to other teams, even important teams. We had more confidence tonight. We needed the first games to settle into the tournament,” he added.

Harare, Jun 20 (PTI): India rode on young seamer Barinder Sran’s memorable debut performance to notch up a crushing 10-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in the second Twenty20 International and level the three-match series 1-1 here today. Asked to bowl after the coin landed in favour of Zimbabwe skipper Graeme Cremer, a determined India restricted the hosts to 99 for nine in the stipulated 20 overs with Sran returning the best figures by an Indian debutant in T20 format, to lay the foundation at the Harare Sports Club. Mandeep Singh (52) and KL Rahul (47) then led the way with unbeaten knocks as the visitors chased down the target with 41 balls to spare. This was India’s first 10wicket win in this format. Sran (4/10) was ably assisted by Jasprit Bumrah, who picked up three wickets for 11 runs in his quota of four overs. Sran finished with excellent figures in his quota of four overs, which is the second best globally. Before Sran, Pragyan Ojha (4/21) against Bangladesh in 2009 World T20, held the Indian record. The duo of Sran and Bumrah picked up seven wickets between them while giving away just 21 runs in eight economical overs. Owing to the pace duo’s efforts, India staged a strong fightback after a shocking tworun loss in the opening T20 International of the three-match series at the same venue. Bangladesh’s Elias Sunny (5/13) holds the record for the best bowling figures by a debutant in T20 Internationals. Chasing a meagre total, India were off to a flying start

The IAAF, track and field’s world governing body, on Friday upheld a suspension of the Russian team imposed in November after a World Anti-Doping Agency report detailed widespread, statesponsored doping. Race walkers Denis Nizhegorodov and Svetlana Vasilyeva argue that a ban of the entire team is unfair punishment. Nizhegorodov, an Olympic silver medalist in 2004, says “competing at the Olympics is the main goal and main honour. We will get that

right,” in comments on agent Andrei Mitkov’s website. “Now they want to take away my chance to compete at the Olympics, even though I haven’t done anything to cost me a place in Rio,” Vasilyeva said. “From bitter experience I understand that you can’t wait and hope for a good result, you have to act.” Both athletes say they reject an IAAF measure that would allow some Russian athletes to compete under a neutral status, rather than the Russian flag, if they can show they are clean and have been tested regularly by a reputable testing authority outside Russia. “I’m a citizen of Russia, a great sports power. I don’t agree with competing under the Olympic flag,” he said. The ap-

peal does not have the blessing of the Russian track and field federation, which says it has yet to receive the full text of the IAAF’s decision. Russian race walking is among the events most seriously affected by doping. Russia voluntarily withdrew its walking team from last year’s world championship over doping concerns. Nizhegorodov comes from a training centre that has seen over 30 doping cases, including several for Olympic champions, and where senior officials have been banned for organised drug use. He was threatened with losing his Olympic bronze from 2008 after a retest came back positive, but was cleared when the “B’’ sample did not correspond with the original finding.

Devendro storms into World Olympics Qualifying quarters

L Devendro Singh Baku, Jun 20 (PTI): Commonwealth Games silvermedallist L Devendro Singh (49kg) stormed into the quarterfinal, while the experienced Manoj Kumar (64kg) entered the last-16 stage of the International Boxing Association’s World Olympic Qualification tournament after notching up comprehensive victories in Baku Fourth seed Devendro, who got an opening round bye, defeated Argentina’s Leandro Blanc 3-0 in a lop-sided contest, while former Commonwealth Games gold-medallist Manoj upstaged second seed Mohamed Eslam Ahmed Aly of Egypt with a dominant 3-0 show. Devendro, also an Asian silver-medallist, will tomorrow be up against South Africa’s Sibusiso Bandla, who defeated Korea’s Lee Yechan in his prequarterfinal bout. The 23-year-old Indian has to make the final to book himself a berth in the Olympic Games. “Devendro used his

right straights and left hook punches in brilliant combination. His uppercut was also very good and precise. In the second round, he somehow twisted his foot but managed to handle the situation on his own. He was brilliant in all three rounds and won the bout unanimously,” national coach Gurbax Singh Sandhu told PTI. Manoj, on the other hand, will take on Bulgaria’s Ayrin Smetov Ismetov in his pre-quarterfinal bout tomorrow after upstaging a more fancied rival. Manoj, also a former Asian bronzemedallist, will be assured of an Olympic spot if he makes the semifinals of the ongoing event. “Manoj put up a superb show, one of the best of his career. He was very sensible, I have never seen him this calm and measured in his approach. He kept his opponent at long range, totally avoided close contact with Mohamed,” Sandhu said.
