ENPO meeting with ENLU on May 26 fiasco inconclusive after thorough consultation with the stakeholders, Kekongchim said. When asked about the outcome of the meeting, ENLU president and Health & Family Welfare minister S Pangnyu Phom also informed that the meeting was inconclusive. Pangnyu said the ENPO delegation sought more time in order to consult its federating units and then only will it get back to the government with its decision. Asked about the main features about the JIC report, Phom refused to divulge anything on the ground that it was still a confidential report. Phom, said since the meeting had ended inconclusively, the finding of the JIC report could not be disclosed to the ENPO delegation. It may be recalled that the state cabinet during its meeting on June 19 had entrusted the Eastern Nagaland Legislators Union to address the issue (JIC recommendations) with the Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation (ENPO).
Earlier on June 6, ENPO in a closed door meeting with the state cabinet led by chief minister Neiphiu Rio agreed to wait for the outcome of the JIC report on the Tuensang fiasco. ENPO president Kekongchim Yimchungru said they had agreed, on the request of the state government, to wait for the report the JIC. However, he said ENPO had sought a written assurance from the government that there will be no extension for the committee to probe the matter, as was practised in the past. Kekongchim said ENPO was firm on its demand to punish the erring officials as per the JIC recommendation. He also said that the ENPO had sought Governor’s intervention as the government, instead of taking action on the three-day ultimatum served on May 28, went ahead to constitute the JIC. Kekongchim had also clarified that the issue had nothing to do with politics or on tribal lines.

STF to move court against Manipur speaker over alleged abuse of power Correspondent/Agencies
IMPHAL, JUN 20: After the nascent Secular Progressive Front (SPF) was dealt a big jolt during Friday’s election to the lone Rajya Sabha seat at the hands of the Biren Singh-led coalition which was supposed to have been reduced to minority after nine MLAs withdrew support on June 17, the Congress-led SPF has cried foul after the ruling coalition managed to “steal a win”. In a voting that was rife with turmoil and controversy, the BJP candidate-- Manipur’s titular king RK Sanajaoba defeated veteran Congress candidate T. Mangibabu 28-24 after some opposition members cross voted. Former Manipur chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh Saturday said the Congressled Secular Progressive Front (SPF) alliance has been left with no option left but to approach court on the alleged abuse of power by the ruling BJP in the state. Addressing media persons here on Saturday evening at his residence, Ibobi said the no-confidence mo-
tion against the government was rejected twice even as the plea for the motion for floor test has not materialised. “As per the law, if a major ally of a coalition government withdraws its support, the government becomes a minority. But allowing the present government to continue is illegal. The Governor should conduct a floor test without much delay so that the party that can prove majority claims stake to forming a new government,” said Singh. The Front also moved for a no-confidence motion against Manipur Speaker for alleged abuse of power with regards to the disqualification cases of seven Congress turncoats. Ibobi said that an SPF delegation including him met the Governor Friday evening and discussed the issue at length. The same day, amid the political turmoil, the election to the lone Rajya Sabha seat of the state was held with the BJP winning the seat with 28 votes. However, the opposition party was resentful as three of the seven MLAs
facing disqualification were allowed to vote while the remaining, including another MLA from TMC, were disqualified. Apart from barring the seven MLAs from entering the Assembly, the High Court has also directed the Speaker not to pronounce the judgment of the disqualification cases till Friday. Ibobi Singh expressed his discontentment over the alleged partiality and undermining of the law by the Speaker with regards to the judgment of the disqualification case. “When all the MLAs are in the same case for the same reason, how could the Speaker disqualify only four? It is a very shameful act,” he said. The Congress party could have easily won the RS seat had the Speaker not allowed the three defected MLAs, Ibobi Singh maintained. Regarding the cross voting that took place during the Rajya Sabha polls, Singh said that the matter has been brought to the notice of the party high command. No response comes yet, he added.
DIMAPUR, JUN 20 (NPN): Western Sumi Hoho (WSH) has expressed surprise over what it described as “inability” of the state cabinet to give a decision on judicial inquiry committee (JIC)’s Tuensang fiasco probe report, saying “it shows the weakness and lack of strong leadership decision in all these quagmire.” WSH questioned what was the use of appointing a JIC, if the state government could not table the contents and necessary action be taken thereafter according to the report? “Is it to save some political figures in the present ministry or some bureaucrats who have strong links with them?” WSH queried. Alleging that setting up JIC was “only a wastage of time, energy and resources and an eye wash to hoodwink the people”, (Cont’d on p-8)

tiviral drug Favipiravir for the treatment of mild to moderate COVID-19 cases, medical experts on Saturday cautioned against seeing it as a “magic bullet” to treat the deadly virus but said it will be helpful as it can be orally administered and reduce viral load. They said the drug’s
real efficacy would be known in the coming months. Glenmark Pharmaceuticals said it has launched antiviral drug Favipiravir, under the brand name FabiFlu, for the treatment of patients with mild to moderate COVID-19 at a price of about Rs 103 per
tablet. FabiFlu is the first oral Favipiravir-approved medication in India for the treatment of COVID-19, it said in a statement. “This drug was already being used in Japan for influenza. They have been using it in COVID-19 patients also. Even China was using it and Russia had also given permission in May to use it. Antiviral drugs like Remdesivir and Favipiravir are not specific to COVID19 but were being used for influenza,” said Dr Vikas Maurya, Director, Department of Pulmonology and Sleep Disorders, Fortis Hospital, Shalimar Bagh. He said studies found that there was some benefit of Favipiravir in COVID-19 treatment and that is why it has now been launched in India as well. (Cont’d on p-8) K Y M C
