CHANDIGARH, JUN 21 (IANS): Taking on those linking yoga to Hindu religion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Tuesday that yoga was no religious activity and people must embrace it for better mental and physical health. The rain gods, who had given a scare just hours ahead of the yoga event, kept away during the nearly one hour session on Tuesday morning. However, minutes after the event ended, Chandigarh received rains again. “Yoga is not a religious activity. Many people do not understand yoga completely. It is not what you will get from yoga but what is important is what you will give to yoga and what all (ailments) will it rid you of.” He said yoga was for both believers and non-believers, and there was no need to create any controversy over it. “It helps in getting mukti (salvation) from health issues,” Modi said, in an attempt to de-link the belief among some that yoga was a part of Hinduism. “Among all days marked by the UN, no day has equalled the mass movement the International Yoga Day has become. M O N, J U N 2 1 ( N P N ) : Konyak Union, Aboi Unit and Aboi Area Students Union (AASU) in a joint press statement have expressed dismay over the Home minister’s statement published in local media on April 20, declaring to reduce the construction of residential complex of 11th IRB camp at Aboi, under Mon District. The press statement issued by AASU working president Wangam Konyak and general secretary Yankang Konyak said that the organisations strongly opposed the motive of the state government. AASU said the Home minister had stated that since most of the IR companies were posted at various places to maintain law and order and also to cut down expenditures, construction of residential complex should be reduced. They however reacted saying the IR jawans were posted at various places on temporary basis. Pointing out that the expenditure for the construction was already

assessed while sanctioning the project, they lamented that the idea of cutting down expenditure mid way was discouraging. It has caused humiliation and discrimination to the people of Aboi in particular and Mon district in general, since the same project started in the same year were completed in other districts, whereas in Aboi, only 30% was completed so far, they said. In this regard, they pointed out that the public demanded equal share, equal treatment and equal importance with the rest of the Nagas. Further reminding that despite the land being fertile, resourceful and reliable for livelihood, they said that the land was generously handed as required by the government. T h e r e f o r e, t h e t wo unions, on behalf of the public of the area appealed to the minister and department to complete the construction as per the original DPR without delay or return the land to the respective land owners.

According to police sources, the 20 boys and 20 girls were employed at “King Catering Services”, Rajkot, after receiving skill trainings for few months under Nagaland government. Lohe said the formation was necessitated due to “lack of a political platform in Nagaland” and the penchant for indulging in tribalism, regionalism, nepotism, parochialism, factionalism, and individualism. Against the backdrop of rampant corruption, political instability, backdoor appointments, and social disarray in the State, Lohe asserted the need for change in Nagaland.

He opined that the newly formed NC would aspire for ushering in an era of change by being “national in outlook and regional in content.” Meanwhile, NC has categorically denied any affiliation with the Indian National Congress although the name would seem to suggest. “The word ‘Congress’ is borrowed from the dictionary and nowhere else,” the party maintained. Speaking to media persons after the launch, NC informed it would “definitely” field party candidates in the 2018 assembly election. The leaders of the NC also disclosed that some prominent

politicians would be joining the party in the near future. Earlier, the program began after invocation prayer by senior pastor, Sumi Baptist Church Dimapur, Vitoshe Swu. IMPHAL, Jun 21: Coordination Committee (CorCom), a conglomerate of four major rebel groups of Manipur has opposed to the country’s aggressive campaign for Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) membership. The conglomerate body has written the chair of the NSG expressing the reasons behind its objection to India becoming a member of the NSG, a statement of the CorCom informed Tuesday. Terming India government as a “Reactionary”, the CorCom insisted that India must not enjoy NSG membership. It also warned that NSG membership will buttress its agenda to build a monolithic nuclear power block in the region, which will in turn become the instrument of oppression by the exploitative market forces that have erected it to enjoy the spoils of unjust war.” The propaganda postulation about India’s sincerity and commitment to the exchange lists of NSG is a strategic invention. Its objective to become a member of NSG is to manipulate it to fulfill its super-profit objectives. Empowering the Government of India by giving membership to nuclear control regimes and letting it to grow into nuclear sophistication and technological and resource supports will shrink breathing space of subjugated and oppressed nations. Scramble for super-profit, backed by nuclear sophistication, will escalate conflict

among enemy countries and render many in Asia into vulnerabilities. De-nuclearisation of India will contribute a lot to national liberations, social emancipations, sustainable development and long term durable peace in Asia and World as well. “We, therefore, on behalf of the oppressed People of Manipur, humbly appeal to the elite member states of NSG not to allow India’s entry into NSG without honouring the present criteria of admission and without any meaningful commitment to Nuclear disarmament treaties as well,” it writes. Reminding that the NSG was founded in response to the Indian nuclear test in May 1974, it stated that it has demonstrated that nuclear technology transferred by Canada and U.S. for peaceful purposes could be misused to building nuclear weapons. In the letter, the CorCom alleged that “Now India is trying to be a member of the same NSG sabotaging the existing procedural norms of admission to NSG.” India is a nuclear-armed state. India is not a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), it is not a party to a nuclear weaponfree zone treaty, it does not join the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT), and it is not making any legal commitments identical to NPT articles concerning its nuclear arms, CorCom said. “India’s desire to be a member of the NSG comes from its conviction that the NSG is a useful forum to advance global non-proliferation

Tripura celebrates International Yoga Day AGARTALA, JUN 21 (PTI): The second International Yoga Day was celebrated across Tripura with school students, sports persons, employees of the state government and common people participating in yoga camps and attending related programmes. Biswa Sarma, has been lobbying with the party leaders for an entry to it. However, his opponent and BJP MLA from Baithalangso constituency Joyram Engleng has been opposing the move due to Ronghang’s involvement in multi-crore rupee scam of the council. In a new twist, in a hurriedly organised press conference, Engleng said the party will take the decision and Karbi Anglong district unit BJP will abide by all the decision taken by the state committee of the party. It is also learnt that a lot of Congress MACs along with other leaders will also join the BJP on the same day.

objectives, and further that India can contribute positively towards that end by being a NSG member” this statement was nothing but a mere propaganda as India’s joining NSG is purely political. If it is not a mere propaganda or political, the question is why India does not follow the existing criteria of admission to NSG. The approach exemplifies India’s concealed agenda to enhance its nuclear weapon productions to become a powerful player in Asia, particularly in South Asia unleashing nuclear weapon competition. India, so far, continues to refrain from signing NPT or CTBT in order to escape away from nuclear control norms, which will jeopardize its vested nuclear agenda. It will strengthen India’s domination upon smaller nations in South and South-East Asia. India imposes considerable sphere of pressure and influence upon Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. India’s finance expansionism is spreading in Southeast Asia under the cover of its Act East Policy. India’s Colonial system is enforced in Western Southeast Asia Region (Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura) and Jammu & Kashmir. Apart from direct military engagement with revolutionary forces in Manipur, the letter alleged government of India of indulging in waging proxy war through creating counter-revolutionary armed groups and communal forces.

ITANAGAR, JUN 21 (PTI): The second International Yoga Day was observed in Arunachal Pradesh Tuesday with Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju and Governor J P Rajkhowa participating in yoga programmes. Despite inclement weather, several MLAs, senior citizens, government officers, police and ITBP personnel, members of civil societies and school students participated in the main function at Indira Gandhi Park here. Speaking on the occasion, the Governor said for peace, prosperity and a healthier nation, yoga is very important. Exhorting the people to practise yoga and incorporate it in their daily lives, Rajkhowa said that yoga embodies unity of mind, body and promotes unity and harmony amongst people, man and nature. “It is a matter of great pride for every Indian that the United Nations Organization by a unanimous resolution supported by 177 countries, in agreement with the views and appeal of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, declared June 21 as the International Yoga Day. Today, the Day is being observed in more than 150 countries of the world and not only providing employment opportunities as yoga instructors and teachers to many but also helping many more entrepreneurs and local small scale industries in producing Yoga mats and apparel,” the Governor added. In his address Rijiju said that yoga was known throughout the world but in the last two years only after the initiative of the Prime Minister, its popularity has grown tremendously.

BJP predicts early elections in Meghalaya

Correspondent

SHILLONG, JUN 21: BJP on Tuesday said the ruling Congress -Meghalaya United Alliance headed by Mukul Sangma would not be able to last its full term until 2018. “Given the trend what the people of Meghalaya are sending as a message, I don’t think this government will last its full term. It will fall under the burden of its own power games and contradictions,” BJP national spokesperson Nalin S. Kohli, told journalists. Kohli’s statement assumed significance in the wake of the infighting within the ruling Congress Legislature Party

over the demand of the change of leadership. Elections to the 60-member House assembly is scheduled to be held in February-March 2018 . “Mukul Sangma’s gover nment is groaning and moaning under the weight of its own internal contradictions and power tussles”, Kohli, who is also the in-charge of the party in Meghalaya, stated. Moreover, he said the people of the state, and especially Garo Hills, had sent a “loud, clear, unambiguous message” by rejecting wholesomely the Congress and its policies in the by-election to the Tura parliamentary constituency in western part of Meghalaya. Red alert sounded on fresh attack on Pathankot

JAMMU, JUN 21 (PTI): Terrorists are hiding in villages close to the “vulnerable” Pathankot airbase, which can come under fresh attack from them, the Parliamentary Standing Committee (PSC) on Home Affairs said on Tuesday. It said the government has been informed about it and security of the strategically important facility beefed up. The committee was in Jammu to review the security arrangements along the international border and had earlier gone to Pathankot. “After going back from Pathankot, we made our suggestions to the government and said that there can be further attack on Pathankot... We were told by the villagers that some terrorists were still hiding in the villages there,” Chairman of the committee P Bhattacharya told reporters here today. After the recommendation of the committee, the government has alerted the CRPF, BSF and the army and handed over the security of the airbase to them, he said. “Do you know that a few days ago, government asked the CRPF, BSF and the Army to guard the air force station because some terrorists are hiding there. How they are hiding there, it is not my business to find out but as we got the information from the villagers, it was very clear to us that they are hiding somewhere. We have informed the Government of India about it,” Bhattacharya said. When asked to comment

on the permission granted by the Indian government to the Pakistani investigation team to visit Pathankot airbase to probe the January 2 attack, he said he was not in favour of allowing Pakistani intelligence officers to visit the strategic facility. “The committee does not support the idea of the Government of India of bringing this intelligence branch of Pakistan here. What for? But for any foreign policy of the Government of India, we are not the proper fora, we cannot take the decision to do this and not to do this”, he said. A five-member Joint Investigation Team (JIT) from Pakistan had visited India between March 27 and 31 to collect evidence with regard to the attack. Bhattacharya said the policy guidelines have to be framed by the Indian government. “The committee conducted intensive tours of Indo-Bangla border and IndiaPakistan border and now we are heading towards Srinagar. “We went to Pathankot which is the most vulnerable area”, he said. The committee said it was satisfied with the measures being taken by the BSF to check infiltration, but advocated providing fully modern equipment to the force. “As of now, they have explained to us the way they are trying to prevent infiltration. You cannot say what is happening today or tomorrow but up till now, it is all right,” Bhattacharya said. Replying to a question

CM’s educational row: DCC Peren reacts to NPF Peren

DIMAPUR, JUN 21 (NPN): Peren District Congress Committee (PDCC) has reacted to the statement of Naga People’s Front (NPF) Peren division, which had expressed dismay over the statement made by NPCC working president over chief minister’s educational qualification issue. In a press release, DCC Peren president Aluibe Iheilung said NPCC working president had “very rightly” responded to the NPF press statement on T.R.Zeliang educational qualification case “because the people of Nagaland deserve to know what actually is going on in the case because he is the chief minister of Nagaland.” However, DCC Peren said NPF Peren division president “has lost his sense and dignity and had stoop down so low to attack the NPCC working president at a personal level.” Alleging that NPF Peren president had “no issues to take to the people to support him”, the DCC Preen said “we feel sorry for such a frustrated person in leading the oldest regional party in the district.” It stated that no matter how hard the NPF Peren president may attack the Congress in protecting T.R.Zeliang for the offence he had committed, the facts and the truths would remain “and the whole world knows who the black sheep is.”

DCC Peren alleged that T.R.Zeliang had “lied to himself and to the people”, adding that the NPF division president was “still supporting him in his lies”. However, DCC said the “documents which have been proven in the court cannot lie.” DCC Peren reminded the NPF division president it also knew “very well that qualification is not a criterion in politics to serve people and T.R.Zeliang was not writing NPSC/UPSC exam.” In 2013 general election, it said no one was aware that T.R.Zeliang “lied under affidavit about his educational qualification.” DCC Peren stated that since 1989 he had been an MLA from 6th Tening A/C “with this fake degree” it therefore wondered “why T.R.Zeliang who in the first place knew very well that he was running for political office, lied to his electorates and the Election Commission of India masquerading himself as a graduate which he never did as proven in the Court?” It said Zeliang “lied not only in Politics but went even to the extent of lying to his own Church which is the sanctum of his religion.” The question, DCC said was not about BA Pass /BA Failed, but about honesty and morality of a leader who was looked upon by people. “Why does the NPF Peren Division defend a liar/ cheater?” it asked.

regarding Pakistan violating international norms on the IB by constructing concrete bunkers, Bhattacharya said India should take up the matter very seriously with Pakistan. “As I understand from the government of India’s stand, they have taken a strong stand on this issue,” he said. He added that the BSF jawans guarding the international border in Jammu and other parts of the country need the most modern amenities and equipment. Referring to the problems faced by troops at the border, Bhattacharya said the committee will submit its recommendations to the ministry of home affairs and the ministry of foreign affairs and would want them to solve those. “Right now, we cannot disclose our recommendations to you, but we have made some observations and those problems have to be sorted out by the Ministry of Home or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. After we submit these papers to the Government of India, the Home Ministry and the Foreign Ministry should sort out all the problems, maintain peace and ensure complete harmony in this part of the country,” he said. He said that the committee had the opportunity to discuss the problems being faced by the farmers living along the International Border (IB) in Jammu region and would ask the Indian government to redress those at the earliest.

Additional chief secretary and development commissioner, R.B. Thong, minister of road and bridges, Vikheho Swu, parliamentary secretary for housing Er. Levi Rengma, commissioner & secretary V&AH, M.K. Mero and director urban development department, Ken Keditsu also expressed their opinion and gave suggestions. Consultants for Kohima smart city, vice president of Voyants Solutions Pvt. Ltd highlighted changes to be made in the pan city proposal as pointed out by the ministry and agencies and how to rectify them in the proposal this time. They informed that “inadequate infrastructure” in Kohima are roads, drains, power (electricity), building by laws and land availability. The consultations however stated “opportunities” were urban renewal and tourism. The meeting was attended by ministers, parliamentary secretaries, AHoDs and HoDs.

HYDERABAD, JUN 21 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made a lot of efforts but “Achhe Din” are yet to come, says former Supreme Court Judge N Santosh Hegde, who feels the BJP-led NDA government should tell people why it is unable to fulfill its election promise of bringing back black money. “I won’t say they have delivered. As compared to the previous government, shade of corruption I don’t see. So far as Prime Minister is concerned, he has made lot of efforts but ‘Achhe Din Abhi Tak Aaye Nahin’,” Hegde told PTI on his assessment of the performance of the Modi government, which completed two years in office recently. But the former Solicitor General of India said he was impressed by Modi’s address to US Congress earlier this month. “Relationship with foreign countries has developed very much. It’s a change from the earlier political dispensation,” he said. On BJP’s promise to bring back black money stashed abroad, he said, “They must bring it back. I really, really don’t understand what’s the hurdle they have. They should tell the people what’s

SRINAGAR/JAMMU, JUN 21 (PTI): Separatist leaders from Jammu and Kashmir, including Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, have been invited by the Pakistan High Commission for the annual Iftar party in New Delhi on June 25. Most of the top and middle-rung separatist leaders from both factions of Hurriyat Conference as well as the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front have been invited to the event. “Yes, we have received an invitation from Pakistan High Commission for an Iftar party on June 25,” Ayaz Akbar, spokesperson for the hardline Hurriyat faction led by Geelani told PTI. Akbar said around 30 members belonging to various constituents of the Geelani’s faction have been invited by the Pakistan High Commission. They include Geelani, Ashraf Sehrai, Shabir Shah and Nayeem Khan, Akbar said. Though it was not yet decided whether Geelani would attend, the Hurriyat will be represented at the Iftar party, he said. The moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and its other executive members have also been invited, Mirwaiz’s media advisor Shahid-ul-Islam said. Apart from Mirwaiz, former Hurriyat chairmen Moulana Abbas Ansari and Abdul Gani Bhat have also been invited, he said. Islam said no decision has been taken yet by the Mirwaiz-led Hurriyat faction on attending the party. “We have some days till Saturday to decide on it,” he said. JKLF chief Mohammad Yasin Malik has also been invited, a party spokesperson said. However, as Malik is under police custody, a decision on attending the Iftar party has been not taken, the spokesperson said.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh presenting cooking gas connection to woman in Lucknow on Tuesday. (PTI) LUCKNOW, JUN 21 (PTI): Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh On Tuesday said it is a misconception that the Centre was trying to do away with subsidy on different schemes, adding that maximum grant for the purpose has been provided by the NDA government. “Sometimes people try to create a misconception that government will end subsidy... Today I want to tell you that we are giving more grant than what was being given by earlier governments,” he said. Singh was speaking after distributing free LPG connections to poor women under the “Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana” here. “In the current financial year, central government will give a subsidy of over Rs 2,50,000 crore but there is a move to create misconception among the people,” he alleged. Singh said, “Our government is of the view that cooking gas should be supplied straight to houses through pipeline instead of cylinders and we are happy that oil companies have started work in this direction.” “Gas from Paradeep in Odisha will reach Lucknow via West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand... gas connections will be piped like water and power lines,” he said.

Aadhaar to be linked with caste, domicile certificates Scheduled Tribes. Besides, people have often complained of harassment allegedly by government officials in getting caste and domicile certificates issued. “The state government may also try to get the information of students fed into the meta data to be made online and may link it to Aadhaar enabled data, if feasible. “Sincere efforts be made to issue these certificates along with Aadhaar number,” reads Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) released by Personnel

NEW DELHI, JUN 21 (PTI): All state governments have been asked to link Aadhaar with caste and domicile certificates to be issued to school students, as part of a first-of-itskind initiative by the Centre. The states have been told to ensure that such certificates are issued within 60 days time to the students when they are studying in Class V or VIII. The development assumes significance as there have been complaints of delay in grant of scholarship to students belonging to Scheduled Caste and

Ministry on issuance of caste and certificates in schools. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) issues Aadhaar -- a 12-digit number which acts as a proof of identity and address, anywhere in the country. The main objective of issuance of caste or tribe certificate is to facilitate access of bona-fide candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes to the reserved posts and services under the state or central governments and secure admission in educational institutions and

get other facilities. “The concerned revenue or state government authorities would scrutinise or verify the documents and issue the relevant certificates preferably within a period of 30—60 days,” it said.

Lauding Indian Oil Corporation’s efforts in implementing the scheme, Singh said the Centre will bear the burden to the tune of Rs 8,000 crore for providing free LPG connections to five crore BPL (below poverty line) families over the next three years. Meanwhile, Kaushal Kishore, a BJP MP from Mohanlalganj, alleged that gas agencies were harming the aims of ‘Ujjwala’ scheme by seeking Rs 1,600 from every connection seeker. They were also not providing benefit of instalments meant for beneficiaries. State convenor of Indian Oil Corporation Avinash Verma said more than three lakh connections have been given in Uttar Pradesh under the scheme which was launched in Ballia on May 1. By July-end this figure will go up to 10 lakh, he added. On the occasion, gas connections were provided to 150 poor women of which 11 were handed over by the union minister. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had, in his Budget speech in February, announced a provision of Rs. 2,000 crore this financial year to provide LPG connections to 1.5 crore women from BPL households.

it that they have done about it. Have they approached the Swiss government? Has the Swiss government denied information? Come out with it. It just can’t be only an election manifesto.” On Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s tenure, Hegde, who was a key member of the Anna Hazare movement against corruption along with the former, said he certainly does not think the AAP chief has made any impact in either curbing corruption or promoting good governance. “Two ministers (of Delhi government) are under scanner, three other ministers... police have filed complaint against,” the former Karnataka Lokayukta said, adding it’s a myth to say that one can change the society overnight through a honest political party. “It will take a long time before people start revolting. Unless we change the society which today respects power and money only, unless we rebuild a society of 1950s and 1960s which boycotted the corrupt...we have to build such a society. “Fall in moral values is the cause for most of our problems today in the country,” he said. “When the going is bad, Kejriwal starts pointing finger at others,” he claimed. “What did he do in the first 52 days?...49 days he spent at Rajpath (in New Delhi), protesting, is it running a government? Merely because police officers were not suspended, a constitutionally-elected government...I (Kejriwal) am functioning from Rajpath. Nothing personal against him. Only his action I am criticising,” Hegde added.

Nagaland Post Vol. XXVI NO. 194 Dimapur, wednesday, June 22, 2016

I

Dubious institutes

t has been reported, that hundreds if not even thousands of students from Nagaland get into colleges and other higher education institutes and that for a significant number who seek to obtain some diploma in various skills or PG in some subject, there are many dubious institutes the prey on the unsuspecting candidates. It is not known whether the state government has taken any steps to bring the entire higher education business under scanner. The growth in number of people who obtain graduate degrees or post graduate degrees from institutions outside the state or the country comes at a time when a growing number of people are returning with doctorate degrees etc from authentic institutes. The phenomenon should serve as strong reason to take a serious review of the entire matter. It is also a fact, that many self-styled universities that are either “affiliated or recognized by international institutions” have proliferated in some parts of India. Some might argue that all non-recognised institutions cannot be categorized as phony or fake. However, it stands to reason, that if educational institutions have a clear motive and are not averse to scrutiny of the credentials of their system and staff ,they would take pains to obtain due recognition. That recognition should be by the institutions from within the country and not any other dubious “international” institution from abroad. There are many institutions that award degrees or doctorates easily where thesis is not an issue but money. This is mostly prevalent in some south Indian states especially institutions which claim to offer a number of undergraduate courses including BA, B. Com and LLB and advertise themselves as regular universities. Some of them flaunt themselves as “open universities’’ and many students who, by circumstance, cannot avail of a regular university education, are taken in by their offer of distance education. Private enterprise in all sectors of education has done commendable service in the country so much so that there are demands for allowing foreign direct investment in higher education. It may be recalled, that some years back the department of education and higher and technical education had released a list of some universities and institutions that were dubious and fake. However it is to be understood that it is not enough to blacklist these universities and issue warnings about them. They contravene the provisions of the UGC Act of 1956 and therefore authorities should take action against those who run these institutions and cheat the students and the public. There are instances where many students discovered that they have wasted time and money in such institutions. Of late, foreign universities have opened a big window for study in medicine and engineering and the middlemen operating throughout India are making a lot of money. The fees charged are less than half that aspirants have to pay as capitation fee to various medical or engineering colleges in India. The government should probe all such institutes and frame a policy whereby those that are dubious do not get intake from the state. There is need to keep a strict vigil on the players in the field and separate the chaff from the grain in the interest of the students.

Post-mortem The malady of tribalism Tribalism – is there a way out? A A

friend of mine commented to me and said that corruption and tribalism were the biggest curses in Nagaland today. Everybody talks about tribalism and yet we feel helpless about it. Nagaland is full of tribal fights and it just takes a small spark to ignite the fire into huge proportions. The firefighting exercise is done by experts and well meaning peacemakers. Usually it always settles down since we all know that everybody stands to lose in an intertribal fight. In my short life, I have seen almost all the Naga tribes involved in some conflict or the other. Even in the absence of outright conflict there is an uneasy calm waiting for another spark to ignite some simmering longstanding hurt. There is actually no real peace. It is just the absence of war. We are suspicious of each other and would like to fortify our own position till the next outbreak. We are a small group of people in a tiny piece of land and really cannot afford to continue to fight if we are to progress. The time for confidence building measures is now when there is not a major conflict taking place. Wait for too long and we will again have to resort to firefighting negotiations. We can continue to lament tribalism in the state till the cows come home but if we do not do something positive, it will remain the divisive force that it is in the following generations to come. I would like to make some suggestions which I feel might help. You may discard some of them if you feel it is too frivolous. If you have better ideas, please bring them onboard. 1. Have intertribal meetings – When a Sumi Hoho/ Church organization has a general body meeting, invite other tribes like Angamis, Aos, Rengmas etc to attend this meeting. Likewise, the Angami Public organization/ ABCC can invite Lothas, Aos and Sumis to sit in their combined sessions. This way you will be very careful how you talk in your meet-

ing. You will also be careful not to utter words of self interest or denigrate another tribe. You need courage, self denial and integrity of spirit to do this. If the topic is of general well being, it does not need to be hidden from others. 2. Start projects together – Can Sumis and Angamis have a joint project like making a road, taking up cleanliness projects like sanitation and drains, toilets etc, mixed choirs, business project like a friendship market where both Sumis and Angamis share the market place and interact with each other every day. You will need to plan together and spend a lot of time carrying out that project which will help to improve understanding and friendship. Can we complement instead of compete? 3. Combined missions projects – Can the Sumis and Aos have a joint mission station where they jointly fund or send a missionary to a particular needy place. They will need to travel together to visit the place and the missionary off and on. They will need to plan together and share resources for this. 4. Scholarships for needy students. Can the better developed district tribes develop a scholarship fund contributed from various churches in order to fund the education of at least 100 lesser developed districts children from poor homes in some good schools in Kohima, Mokokchung or Dimapur. It does not take too much to fund children’s education if we can collect small amounts from a large number of people. If you contribute Rs5000 per month from 50 well off churches in Kohima and Dimapur, we can easily fund the education of 100 needy children by linking with well meaning schools who are willing to give some concession for these children. They will then be our ambassadors for future networking initiatives. 5. Can the well off people from the Konyak community develop a scholarship fund for the Chang tribe children? Can

here was a time, where Nagas lived freely governed by own traditional and customary law and no foreign interference, a time came, British and later India an eagle eye saw the Nagas land, a land of festivals, the beauty of hills & valleys, natural minerals, and sincerity of Naga people for her country. The greedy of foreign rulers shall never ends, till we stand together and fight for our rights, to control and capture or dominate, they still forcefully applying their own laws, today we may agree for the sake of building relationship for Peoples but for tomorrow we may not found our way to stand, speak & fight for our rights, the dreams of our leaders who stood and proclaimed our rights to the nations, is not just building some agreements or political negotiations, but to be recognized our rights among the nations as Naga Country, the un-told suffering and pain brought by Indian Govt towards innocent Naga public, our women & daughters were raped, man were torture and killed, because Peoples

Aos do it for the Sumis? Can Angamis do it for the Sangtams? Can Yimchunger do it for the Tikhirs? Can Southern Angamis do it for the Maos? Can Nagas do it for the Kukis? Can Sumis do it for the Tangkhuls? 6. A few years back the Angami doctors travelled to all the Angami villages and Noklak where they conducted medical camps. Can they do the same to 5 Sumi villages and 5 Lotha villages? Can Sumi or Ao doctors do the same to other tribe villages? 7. Start more intertribal English speaking churches. If not possible at least start more intertribal English speaking services in the evenings in the premises of the tribal church. Can the tribes which have beautiful churches and infrastructure regularly and proactively invite other tribes to use their facilities to conduct some meetings? Can DABA / Town Baptist Church/ Sumi/ Rengma Baptist church invite the Phom/ Konyak / Khiamungan/ Chakhesang church people to conduct some meeting in their church? 8. Share more resources. The resources in the Christian world and churches in Nagaland are fantastic. It is selfish of us to have so much resource and not share it with others. Resources come in the form of information, programmes, finances, people, connections, linkages, infrastructure etc. If you can give your resources to other tribes, you will have less fear from them. 9. Refuse to create more tribal unions, especially in schools and colleges. If you have a tribal union function, invite a speaker from another tribe which you are not comfortable with to come and address your meeting. There must be a deliberate and proactive programme to destroy this curse of tribalism which entangles us. We need to be Christians first and express Christian love in tangible and practical terms. he sole purpose of education and school seems to have lost its way or if not it has become a farce. Either there are no students in the school with many teachers or there is proxy teachers if students are there and to add up to it, the random appointments, back door appointments and so on without any relevance of the needs and ground reality. ‘No Work No Pay’ has no relevance anymore. While some get paid without any work, some (especially SSA/RMSA) teachers don’t get paid in due time even after their hard and faithful work. The system has gone way out of its order and has failed miserably. Productivity of every human depends on wellness and healthy being of oneself. Consider a teacher without salary for three/ four months. How much can they produce or even for that matter

‘how much’ of that education for all these years have been actually put to use. He was an active social worker but for most of his later years, he led a peaceful life. I came to know of his immense social contributions and his dedication towards Naga Nationalism as he narrated his experiences and events that took place in his lifetime. He was one of the last surviving General amongst the Nagas. To me, he was the perfect example of a patriot, a visionary, a statesman and a man who knew and strongly believed that ‘truth is sublime’. While he was pursuing his matriculation in Government High School Mokokchung, the then Headmaster alleged 24 of the senior students to be members of the Naga Youth Movement. To quote, “Nineteen of us refused to surrender to these false charges which ultimately led to the closure of the school on the 13th August, 1954. At this juncture, I was one of the five who pledged allegiance and signed with our own blood for serving Naga Nation”. This marked his entry into a lifelong dedication towards Naga Nationalism based on his firm believe in truth. Even on his dying Bed, his last words to me were “Obulai alizung tashi asemogoto na?” (Grandpa has finished the race, haven’t I?) to which I

asked them to reconsider their claims. There was an Angami pastor who confronted the Judge and told him; we all are brothers do not say such words. There were also other Angamis who were present there and they started murmuring about the indiscretion of the Judge. So, before the situation flare up, I called the Judge and narrated about the actuality of the accident. For a while the situation went through a commotion. There was another person who was travelling in an Ecco-Van taxi. This man came and shouted that there were sick people in their van. He also stated that it is wrong to stop the vehicles plying on the Highway. This man was right but to my surprise I found none of the passengers in that van looked sickly, instead everyone in the van smilingly glared at us while passing. There were some Sumi gentlemen around who came to extend their help by suggesting them to negotiate in an honorable way. Finally, the Scorpio owner took the responsibility to repair the Gypsy and the matter ended after they exchanged their phone numbers. The story ended there but the reality of our fears, prejudices, stereotyping of one another and the anger we Nagas possess became a reality, all in one single moment. As I pondered on the incident, I learned these lessons: -Not all Sumis are arrogant and obnoxious, likewise not all Angamis are drunkards and misers, who demands repayment for every foul act. Let us not bring tribal or community name for petty reasons and personal issues. -There are always people who want to add more fuel to the fire (The Judge). -We should not judge things as we see; likewise the Judge must learn his lesson not to judge every situation in the like of a courtroom. -In any situation even if you are right, the situation reverses back, if you drink and drive, though not drunk (Angami driver). -Some people are always in emergency, although their situations are not (the man in the Ecco-van). -There are people who do not want to say what is right or wrong, although they knew it; they are just use to it (the Truck driver). -Though many people, bystanders did not say anything, their presence means so much for the conflicting individuals, their presence helped them to resolve their differences amicably (let us push forward this kind of culture). Villo Naleo

replied “Yes Obu. You did”. He was a man of few words yet those few words were capable of penetrating our thoughts and altering the way we perceive things as they are. His last words to me proved that he stood his ground and never faltered in his belief till the very end. He took a pledge with his blood at a tender age of 19 and ran the race until his dignified demise at the dawn of a new day, the 30th of May 2016. He knew that his job was done. He knew he had given his all and above all, he knew that God was always by his side. Will we ever run our race with such conviction without losing ground? Can we hold on to truth and make it lead the way? These are the questions I ask myself and possibly to the readers as well (if it meant something). The people who knew him, knew who he was, and I am sure they too are holding on to his precious words from their own experiences as I do. There is a lot that I have learnt from him and I consider myself very fortunate. But perhaps the most important thing that surpasses the others was his repeated message which was “tsungrem dak amangang ma no” (always trust and believe in God). Farewell Obu. Rest in peace. execute their basic duties when they are worried as and how to put food on the table for the next day? Seriously, if this is not a joke then what is? And especially for teachers who are in remote areas where even a day to day transport is out of question. And, not undermining the respected senior elder teachers but it is a science of human that the younger we are the more we can produce and mostly the fresh recruits under SSA and RMSA are young but who is to be blamed? And again talking on productivity, how much will a teacher be willing to sacrifice if his job doesn’t’ guarantee his livelihood? The ‘Proxy Teacher’ trend comes into play. There may be many other reasons but salary issue is one among the main reason behind proxy teacher trend. How can one survive without eating? It is always best adjusted with some

person (qualified or not) of that particular place because they have the source to eat at least. Is it the MHRD’s directive to not pay the teachers on monthly basis? And how on earth and on what basis do they asses the success of so called SSA/RMSA schemes? Well, recently we have heard the words and commitment of our honorable education minister in line to do away with the system by cash delivery system; to bring SSA /RMSA teachers in par with state teachers; notification and order to stop the practice of proxy teachers by 30th June. ‘BUT’, without the opposition, without anybody to check and balance the issue, and the laid back attitude of authority without agitations and pressure, how far will the words materialise? Well, we’ll have to wait and see. L. Vika Chishi, A concerned teacher

with the Naga general. (Obu)

(From previous issue) So far so good. Then his third and final question was, “why are you/they educated to be unemployed?” This left me baffled. There was no other way I could explain so I ultimately sought for his answer. Firstly, education has no end. This I presume we all know it as a fact. However, in the literal sense and from a Linguistic perspective, the semantic content of the very word “educated” stands in contrast to its actual meaning which is ‘there is no endpoint’ in receiving education. Secondly, if we claim to be ‘educated’ per se, doesn’t it imply that we are capable of doing anything since we have already reached that milestone of being educated? It is fair to say that this notion is arguable. But what he meant and what he wanted to point out was that we Nagas are not practical in our approach. We do not engage in self employment. We receive education but we do not bother to use that productively and make our society a better place. He was a very practical man. And I understood that he wanted to make me think and be intrigued first and set the tone to question myself deeply. Not only did it provoke my mind, it also led me question myself on ‘how practical’ I actually am and

month ago, as I was travelling up to Kohima; a Scorpio (SUV) overtook me at a blistering pace, overriding the bumpy potholed road near Dzüdza River (Zubza). I was conversing with my wife that the person must be in a real hurry. After driving a minute or so, the same Scorpio collided with a Gypsy (jeep). As there was no one around, I decided to negotiate and talk with both the vehicle drivers. We started our conversation where both the drivers claimed they were right. The Scorpio driver accused the Gypsy driver: If you have pulled the brake earlier this mishap would have been averted. Then, the gypsy driver clamored: I came driving on my own side, how can you blame me? And he charged the Scorpio driver to pay for the damage. The Scorpio owner reiterated that the gypsy driver was not very normal and accused him for drunken driving. In fact the accident occurred while the Scorpio overtook a truck, so I asked the truck driver who was wrong? The truck driver said, the Scorpio came overtaking and suddenly made a twist in order to avoid collision with the truck, then it hit the Gypsy which was coming from the opposite direction. Hearing their disagreement, I knew that the issue cannot be resolve immediately. So I talked to them separately for some time but that didn’t work. Within no time there were vehicles stranded into a serpentine line from both sides. The Gypsy owner refused to move his vehicle, so we asked the truck to move away and make way for other vehicles to pass by. It so happened that the Scorpio belongs to a Sumi and the Gypsy belongs to an Angami. Several people got down from their vehicles and enquired what and how the mishap took place. As the process of negotiation was going on, there came an officer with a nameplate on his vehicle. He was some sort of a Judge (I do not want to mention his designation) and happens to be a Sumi. With no bad intention he came to the rescue of his tribesman, he came and talked with some people who were on the spot. Then he started yelling at the Gypsy owner, “Just because you are an Angami you cannot claim to be right here.” Then he went on, calling the attention of the people standing there saying, “Hey people look at the position of the gypsy; it is completely the fault of gypsy driver.” The words spoken by Judge infuriated the Gypsy driver. The atmosphere became very tense and it was very likely they (gypsy driver and the judge) were about to exchange some punches. However, we interfered and

DailyDevotion The Ministry Reminiscence of my experiences of the Inner Life You are…a royal priesthood… —1 Peter 2:9 By what right have we become “a royal priesthood”? It is by the right of the atonement by the Cross of Christ that this has been accomplished. Are we prepared to purposely disregard ourselves and to launch out into the priestly work of prayer? The continual inner-searching we do in an effort to see if we are what we ought to be generates a self-centered, sickly type of Christianity, not the vigorous and simple life of a child of God. Until we get into this right and proper relationship with God, it is simply a case of our “hanging on by the skin of our teeth,” although we say, “What a wonderful victory I have!” Yet there is nothing at all in that which indicates the miracle of redemption. Launch out in reckless, unrestrained belief that the redemption is complete. Then don’t worry anymore about yourself, but begin to do as Jesus Christ has said, in essence, “Pray for the friend who comes to you at midnight, pray for the saints of God, and pray for all men.” Pray with the realization that you are perfect only in Christ Jesus, not on the basis of this argument: “Oh, Lord, I have done my best; please hear me now.” How long is it going to take God to free us from the unhealthy habit of thinking only about ourselves? We must get to the point of being sick to death of ourselves, until there is no longer any surprise at anything God might tell us about ourselves. We cannot reach and understand the depths of our own meagerness. There is only one place where we are right with God, and that is in Christ Jesus. Once we are there, we have to pour out our lives for all we are worth in this ministry of the inner life.

Sir,

ANAHTA appeals

With great pain and anguish ANAHTA once again appeal the government and department for the release of pending salary effecting from February 2016. We are being made to suffer due to the incompetence within the department and the government. We have waited long enough as per our capacity so that the department and the government could pursue to MHRD. Being a simple teacher depending solely on the salary for survival have no option to endure the grievances any longer as we are struggling at the verge for sustenance. If the government and the department have any sincerity towards the teacher and their grievances which might effect even the students at long run. Should proactively release the monthly salaries without facing the teachers to resort to desperate measures who are serving all these months with sincerity and release the pending salary within this month. If our grievance be not redressed within this month it cannot be negotiated either when the survival of our member is at stake, since salary and survival is a matter of right which ultimately will turn into agitation inevitable for ANAHTA. Therefore we pray to the governor of Nagaland, chief minister, minister School Education, director DOSE, commissioner & secretary DOSE. The finance commissioner and the chief secretary for your good wisdom to prevail and redress our grievance at earliest. Basu Akang, Tofa, Rangwan, Monthung, James, Executive Members ANAHTA

In this regard, it is to be mentioned that in due course of time Rs. 60/- per acre per annum was agreed to be paid to the affected land owners on the basis to review the existing land rate and extension of lease agreement after every five (5) years. Nagaland Post, Dimapur wednesday, june 22, 2016

Mumbai, Jun 21 (IANS): Beleaguered tycoon Vijaya Mallya resigned as chairman of Bayer CropScience Ltd, the Indian subsidiary of the German pharma major Bayer AG, the company said on Tuesday. “We regretfully accept the voluntary resignation of Vijay Mallya as our director and chairman with effect from June 30, 2016,” Bayer CropScience said in a statement here. A new chairman will be appointed at its next board meeting, it added. Thanking Mallya for his valuable service, the pharma arm and its promoter (Bayer AG) said it had grown into a market leader during his tenure since March 2004. “We are grateful to Mallya for his professionalism, dedication and loyalty,” the statement added.

countries like Tanzania. Agriculture is also done at a very small scale compared to the land available, hence the team can explore the option to take land for contract farming with the involvement of private players,” a Food Ministry source told IANS. Pulses like Tur, Arhar and a few similar to Indian varieties are grown in these countries, the source said. India, the largest producer of pulses and also consumer, imported about 5.5 million tonnes last fiscal through private trade, but it was not enough due to growing demand to keep the prices under check. Production of pulses is estimated to have declined to 17.06 million tonnes in 201516 crop year (July-June) due to drought, whereas domestic demand is around 23-24 million tonnes.

Rupee weakens further to 67.48; ends down 17 paise Mumbai, Jun 21 (PTI): Extending losses against the American currency for the second straight day, the rupee dropped by another 17 paise to close at 67.48 on persistent dollar demand from banks and importers amidst weakness in equities. Foreign capital outflows also affected the rupee value. Foreign portfolio investors and foreign institutional investors sold shares worth a net Rs 537.46 crore yesterday, as per provisional data released by

the stock exchanges. The rupee opened lower at 67.40 per dollar against the yesterday’s closing level of 67.31 at the Interbank Foreign Exchange market and hovered in a range of 67.35 and 67.55 before ending at 67.48 per dollar, showing a loss of 17 paise or 0.25 per cent. The domestic currency has dropped 40 paise or 0.60 per cent in two days. The dollar index was trading lower by 0.08 per cent at against a basket of six cur-

rencies in the early trade but ruled steady in the afternoon trade. The RBI fixed the reference rate for the dollar at 67.47 and euro at 76.45. In cross-currency trades, the rupee dropped further against the pound sterling to end at 99.47 from 98.49 yesterday and also moved down further against the euro to 76.41 fom 76.25. The domestic currency declined against the Japanese yen to 64.44 per 100 yens from

64.37. At overseas, the British pound eased against the dollar in early Asian trade, a day after posting its biggest daily gain in 7 years on the back of opinion polls that swung in favor of the campaign for Britain to stay in the European Union. The dollar made up some lost ground against its Japanese counterpart the late trade, having come close to a 22-month low earlier in the session ahead of the UK referendum on European Union membership later in the week.

Hyderabad, Jun 21 (PTI): Country’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India (MSIL) today said it is ramping up production of premium hatchback Baleno to meet the current demand and reduce waiting period. The company also said that its Japanese parent Suzuki Motor Corp is expected to start pilot production at the Gujarat plant in the January-March quarter next year. “We are making all possible efforts to de-bottleneck the lines and enhance production (of Baleno),” said R S Kalsi, executive director, (marketing and sales), MSIL. “We have wonderful products in our portfolio like Baleno, S-cross, Vitara and Brezza, which are doing very well in the market. Waiting period is also there (for these vehicles),” he added. MSIL has over 45,000 outstanding bookings of Baleno and Brezza each. Baleno, launched in last October, has a waiting period of 6-8 months depending on the variant. MSIL has gradually doubled production of Baleno to around 12,000 a month in the past few months to meet domestic and export requirement. “It is not only Maruti Suzuki alone. There are close to 250 (company) vendors in the supply chain. They

also need to ramp up their production, investments and capacities. So, it takes time. Towards the second part of the year, we would be able to increase the volume,” Kalsi told PTI. Maruti has started exporting Baleno to Japan from January this year. MSIL is also planning to add 200 outlets during current financial year in the country. Kalsi said the total number of ‘Nexa’ outlets would also go up to 250 by the end of the current financial year, from 127 in April. He also said Suzuki Motor Corp may start pilot production at its whollyowned Gujarat plant in the last quarter of the current financial year. The Gujarat plant will supply vehicles and components exclusively to MSIL, which has a capacity to make 2,50,000 vehicles annually in the first phase. “Products to be manufactured in that plant are yet to be decided. We are working with our manufacturing and engineering teams,” he further said. MSIL expects that the auto industry may grow at 6-8 per cent in the current financial year, while the company is expected to retain its market leader position with double digit growth.

Mumbai, Jun 21 (IANS): An indigenous technology to restrict benzene, a carcinogenic element, in petrol and naphtha has been developed in collaboration with the state-run Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP) in Dehradun, the Reliance Industries (RIL) said on Tuesday. “In a major technological and scientific breakthrough, the RIL and IIP have come up with an indigenous Benzene Recovery Unit (BRU) which restricts benzene content to 0.2 volume per cent in raffinate (return stream to gasoline),” the RIL statement said here. “RIL did the construction and the flawless commissioning of the new process named BRU.” “The RIL-IIP have filed a joint patent for the process to create a strong Intellectual Property (IP) and ‘freedom to operate’ assurance,” it added. The developers are receiving many enquiries for licensing the technology, the statement said. The RIL had entered an agreement with the IIP to co-develop an extractive distillation process. Reliance said there has been an increasing pressure on refiners globally to reduce the amount of benzene and other hazardous air pollutants in petrol/gasoline pool because of health and environmental concerns.

The government is planning government-to-government contract with countries like Myanmar to import the commodities for enhanced buffer stocks in the country. During a recent meeting of a high-powered interministerial team headed by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, the government decided to enhance the buffer stock of pulses in view of growing prices to 8 lakh tonnes, a significant jump from the previous target of 1.5 lakh tonnes. The visit of a delegation led by Consumer Affairs Secretary to Mozambique is significant as the government is also in favour of exploring the feasibility of contract farming of pulses in some of the African countries, including Mozambique. “The farming remains highly unorganised in Mozambique and other African

New Delhi, Jun 21 (IANS): With the government giving the green signal to 100 per cent foreign direct investment (FDI) in trading of food products manufactured or produced in India, including through e-commerce, the industry stakeholders feel the measure will reduce wastage, curb inflation and will be beneficial for the farmers. Piruz Khambatta, Cochairman of the Confederation of Indian Industry’s National Committee on Food processing Industry, this policy announcement is aligned with the objective of the government’s initiative on ’Make in India’ to facilitate ‘ease of doing business’ with a thrust on ‘Minimum Government and Maximum Governance’. The industry body felt this decision will have a positive impact as FDI flow will usher in advanced technologies and expertise that will augment the supply chain management of the recipient organisations. “The supply chain efficiencies will help reduce wastage, such as seen in fruits and vegetables production; it will help government curb inflation and bring down the interest rates and Last, the farmer will be the main beneficiary of this initiative,” the industry chamber said in a statement.

pact of Brexit on India. EU is one of the India’s major trading partner. It accounts for about 15 per cent of the country’s exports. She also said that the contracting economies and developments in nations, including Venezuela, too would have some impact on India’s trade. “...EU demand is waiting for the outcome of Brexit. We still have some way to go before we say, yes there is a revival (in exports). But we can see it is bottoming out. To see the pick up (in exports), I want some international developments also to happen whichever way it happens,” she added. The remarks assume

significance as exports fell the 18th month in a row in May, though marginally by 0.79 per cent, to $22.17 billion as several non-oil sectors such as engineering and gems and jewellery saw a rise in outward shipments. When asked about startups, she said the government has taken lot of steps for the budding entrepreneurs like helping them in a way to find investors also. “There are issues with incubators...start-ups are not going out of India,” she said adding there would a startup function in Hyderabad in September where investors would also participate. On the ongoing Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) negotiations, she said there is no pressure and talks are progressing. On the issue of pulses prices, she said the government is taking lot of steps to rein in the prices including importing from countries and getting into government-togovernment deals. On GST, she said, the Finance Minister is talking to all the political parties. Tamil Nadu has certain issues as that is a manufacturing state and they have some natural reservations and “I expect that the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister will support the GST”.

Kolkata, Jun 21 (IANS): The Tea Board of India on Tuesday said it deferred to June 23 the start of pan India e-auction from sale number 25. “Sale No. 25 in all auction centres has been deferred to June 23, in the Pan India e-auction module,” the board said. “The sale No. 25 through Pan India e-auction mode will be carried out on June 23 at all the auction centres except the post settlement portion of auctions,” it said in a statement. The board said the postsettlement portion of the auction would be implemented shortly after carrying out certain modifications in the system as per the feedback received from stakeholders. It said it has taken this decision after extensive consultation with buyers, sellers, brokers and other stakeholders. “The actual auction of tea through Pan India eauction system was planned on June 21, 22 and 23 at different auctions centres. In Kolkata, Guwahati and Cochin auction centres, sale 25 was scheduled on June 21, in Coimbatore and Siliguri the sale was scheduled on June 22 and at Coonoor it was fixed for June 23,” it said. Pan India e-auction was launched on May 9, 2016.

added. “India continues to attract FDIs despite an uncertain global outlook. Major improvements have taken place in India’s economy since Prime Minister Modi assumed office,” Aghi said. “These reforms include accelerated infrastructure investment, greater openness to foreign direct investment, less red tape, and a revised bankruptcy code. “We had stated earlier that USD 45 billion is only a starting point for American companies to invest in India. With these newly announced reforms, FDIs, technology transfers, and jobs are likely to increase substantially,” he said. The Indian government on Monday launched a second wave of FDI reforms allowing 100 per cent inflows in civil aviation and food processing sectors while easing norms in defence and pharmaceuticals, steps apparently aimed at neutralising fallout of Raghuram Rajan’s decision to exit RBI.

Allowing up to 74 per cent through the automatic route will encourage investment to move swiftly into India in this important and growing sector and will further promote and expand healthcare access in India, Aghi said. The long-awaited National Civil Aviation Policy is expected to promote regional connectivity, boost tourism and stimulate the economy in tier 2-3 cities. India is the fastest growing aviation market with 21 per cent plus growth in the domestic sector in 2015-16, and can become one of the largest aviation markets in the foreseeable future, he

The instructions also make it clear to the TRO that in case of liquidation of assets there should be “prompt lodging of the claim” with the official liquidator and constant monitoring of the case in order to guard the interest of the revenue or the department. It has also been directed, as per the strategy paper, that supervisory officers “may instruct” the TRO or the Assessing Officer of a case to monitor cases which are being heard in the Debt Recovery Tribunals (DRTs). They (TRO) should, it said, consider lodging of claims of outstanding demand in such cases before the DRT. “At any level of a default case, the department’s interest of getting taxes is supreme and hence the TRO is being directed to pursue the cases upto the level of DRTs too.

WASHINGTON, Jun 21 (PTI): A series of reforms announced by India in particularly increasing Foreign Direct Investment in a number of sectors will provide a fillip to the potential of US-India bilateral trade, a business advocacy group has said. “The widened scope of FDI norms in defence, civil aviation, broadcasting services, and pharmaceuticals will provide a fillip to the potential of the US-India bilateral trade,” US India Business Council (USIBC) President Mukesh Aghi said while referring to a series of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) reforms by India on Monday. Close on the heels of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Washington earlier this month, the notice that India would liberalise FDI in defence, broadcasting services, civil aviation and pharmaceuticals sectors has further buoyed investor sentiment, it said. The Central Board of Direct Taxes, in a strategy paper for the current fiscal, has directed officials in the tax department to use the rarely-used in this regard. For willful evasion of taxes, Section 276 C (2) of the IT Act provides for rigorous imprisonment for a period between three months and three years which may be accompanied by a fine. Door open for India’s NSG bid: China

CAIRO, JUN 21 (PTI): An Egyptian court today quashed a government’s border deal with Saudi Arabia to hand over two strategic Red Sea islands to the Gulf nation that had sparked public outrage in the country. The Egyptian Administrative Court ruled that two islands Tiran and Sanafir, which were under Egypt’s control for over 60 years, should remain under the Egyptian sovereignty. The agreement of transferring the two islands to Saudi Arabia was signed on April 8 as part of a short visit by Saudi King Salman to Cairo. Egyptian lawyers Khaled Ali and Ali Ayoub had filed a lawsuit in the Egyptian Administrative Court at the State Council against the deal. Their report included that Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Prime Minister Sherif Ismail and Parliament Speaker Ali Abdel-Al had wrongfully waived Egyptian sovereignty rights over the two islands. The court decision is not final and can be appealed. The Egyptian government had described the deal as “an important achievement that will make the two countries benefit economically”. The handover sparked an outcry from many Egyptians activists who rallied on April 25 to protest against the government’s deal.

we are against who (a country). We did not target any country, India or Pakistan,” Hua said. China for its part cares about non-proliferation treaty (NPT) as criteria for admission of the new members into the NSG, she said. “This is the core of the international non-proliferation. If the non-proliferation regime is changed how can we explain the Iranian nuclear treaty,” Hua argued. “We just had a treaty with Iran. We have North Korean issues there...So this concerns the core issue whether NPT and non proliferation system could be impacted by this,” she said. Reiterating what she said yesterday, Hua stated that, “According to my understanding, it (entry of new members) is not on the agenda of the NSG meeting in Seoul.”

“The door is open for the admission of the nonNPT members. It is never closed. It is open. But the members of the NSG should stay focussed on whether the criteria should be changed and whether non-NPT members should be admitted into the NSG,” she said. On US’ backing for India’s NSG bid, Hua said, “We care about rules. US just sets the rules. This is not an issue between China and India but (about) the pillar for nonproliferation system,” she said. Amid China’s opposition, the US has given a fresh push to India’s NSG membership bid by asking members of the elite club to support India’s entry into the grouping during the ongoing plenary meeting in Seoul. “We believe, and this has been US policy for some time, that India is ready for

MH370 meeting ends with no updates on search plans KUALA LUMPUR, JUN 21 (AFP): Malaysian, Chinese and Australian officials Tuesday wrapped up two days of talks on the deep-sea search for missing flight MH370 but made no announcements, amid expectations the operation will finish by August. Officials said the closeddoor gathering in Malaysia’s administrative capital Putrajaya paves the way for a tripartite meeting of transport ministers in the near future in which search plans could be spelt out. No date for that meeting has been set yet. The Australian-led search is scouring the seabed within a designated 120,000-squarekilometre (46,000-square-mile) zone in the remote Indian Ocean where authorities believe the Malaysia Airlines passenger jet may have gone down. That is expected to be completed by August, and the three countries have said the hugely expensive high-tech sonar search west of Australia will not be further expanded without “credible” new evidence pointing to a crash site. Malaysia’s Department of Civil Aviation director-general Azharuddin Abdul Rahman declined comment to AFP on what was discussed in the meeting. As the meeting began on Monday, an international network of MH370 next-of-kin released a statement repeating

its call for the search to be extended and expanded, and for the full public disclosure and reassessment of data used to determine the suspected crash zone. “The search for the plane and the truth of what happened is vital to look ahead and move on,” said the group, called Voice370. “A decision to end the search is a cruel response to a desperate human crisis.” The Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 vanished on March 8, 2014 en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people aboard, mostly Chinese nationals. The cause of the disappearance is still unknown and it remains one of the greatest mysteries in aviation history.

ISLAMABAD, JUN 21 (PTI): Pakistan has “successfully” blocked India’s bid to gain membership of the NSG, prime minister’s advisor on foreign affairs Sartaj Aziz Tuesday told parliament. Pakistan has a strong case to gain Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) membership on merit and nondiscriminatory basis, Aziz said in a statement. “We have been making successful efforts against India’s Nuclear Suppliers Group membership,” he said. His remarks came ahead of the key meeting of the 48-nation NSG this week in Seoul when it will take up the applications of India and Pakistan. Aziz also told lawmakers that Pakistan was not being isolated and its official foreign policy was being tuned to the new alignments in the world. He said Pakistan would continue to follow the policy of non-interference in affairs of other countries. He said foreign policy was geared for the protection of national interests and nuclear assets. Aziz said that Pakistan’s political role would increase after becoming full member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation. He said Pakistan enjoyed historical relations with the Muslim world which were based on common religion and recent visits by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Muslim countries will not affect Pakistan’s ties with them.

tor, said the Taliban “stopped couple of buses and around 15 other vehicles on the main highway and searched them all” suggesting they were looking for someone or something specific and had enough time to go through all the vehicles. Later on Tuesday, Helmand police chief Gen. Aqa Noor Kentoz said Afghan security forces launched an operation to find the abducted passengers. He said it was too early to say how many government employees were among those travelling in the attacked buses and cars. Taliban spokesman Qari Yusouf Ahmadi later in a message to the media confirmed the group was behind the assault and said the insurgents still hold 27 of the abducted but freed the others. “We freed all but 27 ... there will be an investigation and we will find out if they are government employees and if so, they will be hand over to the Taliban judicial officials to decide on their fate,” said Ahmadi. Earlier this month, the Taliban killed 12 people they had captured, including policemen and soldiers, in eastern Ghazni province. Last month, Taliban-linked insurgents killed at least nine people after seizing passengers off buses in northern Kunduz province.

Afghan police soldiers inspect the site of a suicide attack in Kabul, Afghanistan, Monday. (AP/PTI) K A N DA H A R , J U N 2 1 (AGENCIES): The Taliban on Tuesday ambushed a series of buses and cars in southern Afghanistan’s Helmand province, forcing people out of the vehicles and abducting around 60 passengers, an Afghan official said. The insurgents later said they released all but 27 of those abducted. According to Mohammad Ismail, a district police chief in Helmand, the attack happened in Gareshk district. The Taliban forced the buses and cars to stop at gunpoint, he said, adding that it’s not known where the Taliban took the abducted passengers.

The abductions come amid stepped-up Taliban attacks as part of their summer offensive. The insurgents frequently target buses carrying civil servants, or those perceived to be working for the Kabul government. On Monday, a Taliban suicide bomber killed 14 Nepalese security guards in an attack on their minibus in the Afghan capital. And in late May, a suicide bomber struck a minibus carrying court employees during morning rush hour, also in Kabul, killing 11 people. The Taliban also claimed that attack. Signs of possible North Giraffes suffer ‘silent extinction’, say wildlife advocates Korea missile launch BANGKOK, JUN 21 (IANS): Wildlife advocates on Tuesday called to protect the dwindling populations of wild giraffes, whose numbers have fallen by 40 per cent over the past 15 years. Marking World Giraffe Day on Tuesday with a call to protect the 80,000 to 90,000 giraffes left roaming the African savannahs -- down from 140,000 in the early millennium and two million 150 years ago, the Giraffe Conservation Foundation (GCF) has launched a campaign to put “people at the centre of giraffe conservation” to stem the long-necked herbivores’ silent extinction. According to GCF, giraffes are often overpassed for

protection or advocacy when compared to rhinos or African elephants, despite elephant populations being 5.6 times higher, Efe news reported. Habitat loss and poaching threaten the survival of the gentle giants, who stand up to 5.7 metres tall and are “easily killed”, according to the African Wildlife Foundation. By raising peoples’ awareness of the plight facing the ungulate mammals, advocates hope to create better government policies to protect them. The effort has been successful in Niger, where West African giraffe numbers have quadrupled since the government started to protect them in the 1990s after numbers

fell to only 50 animals left in the whole country, reports the National Geographic. The International Union for Conser vation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) continues to list giraffes as an animal of “least concern” because only two of the nine giraffe subspecies are endangered, but conservationists say this is inaccurate due to a lack of information and interest in studying the unassuming creatures. “It’s a hell of a lot of work to gather the necessary information (to change the endangered listings),” said GCF Executive Director Julian Fennessy, as cited by the Scientific American journal.

SEOUL, JUN 21 (AFP): North Korea appears to be readying another test of a powerful, new medium-range missile, following a series of failures for a ballistic weapons programme that aspires to threaten the US mainland, multiple reports said Tuesday. Japanese and South Korean media quoted official sources as saying North Korea looked to have deployed a so-called Musudan missile near its east coast. The North has made four failed attempts this year to test fly the Musudan, which has an estimated range of anywhere between 2,500 and

membership and the United States calls on participating governments to support India’s application at the plenary session of Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG),” White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest told reporters. “At the same time, participating governments will need to reach a consensus decision in order to admit any applicant into the group and the United States will certainly be advocating for India’s membership,” Earnest said as the 5-day annual plenary session of the 48-member club began in the South Korean capital yesterday. While majority of the elite group members backed India’s membership, it is understood that apart from China, countries like Turkey, South Africa, Ireland and New Zealand were not in favour of India’s entry into the NSG. China maintains opposition to India’s entry, arguing that it has not signed Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). However, it has been batting for its close ally Pakistan’s entry if NSG extends any exemption for India. Pakistan applied for NSG membership, a week after India submitted its membership application. India has asserted that being a signatory to the NPT was not essential for joining the NSG as there has been a precedent in this regard, citing the case of France.

BEIJING, JUN 21 (PTI): China, which has been opposing India’s NSG membership bid, Tuesday for the first time said the “door is open” for discussions on the issue but took a swipe at the US for backing India, saying it was one of those who made the rule against the entry of nonNPT countries into NSG. Chinese Foreign Ministry, however, asked the 48member NSG to “stay focussed” on whether the criteria should be changed on entry of non-NPT countries into the elite group. “I have not seen the US statement supporting India. But US is one of those who made the rule that non-NPT countries should not join the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG),” Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying told a media briefing. “The relevant rule was made on the principle that NPT was the cornerstone of the NSG,” she said. Hua made the remarks in response to a question on US asking members of the nuclear trading club to support India’s application. Later talking to Indian media, Hua said while discussions are going on among the NSG members, the admission of new members is not listed in the current plenary meeting in Seoul. “The door is open. ‘Finding Dory’ shatters stereotypes about disabilities

“F

inding Dory” is not only shattering box office records. Some say the latest Disney Pixar movie is also breaking down stereotypes about the disabled, reports CBS News correspondent Reena Ninan. That’s thanks in part to the lovable but forgetful title character, Dory, who has suffered from short term memory loss since she was a baby. “She has a brain that works a little bit differently than everyone else’s, but it also allows her to make connections that other people wouldn’t, or see other things that other people might miss,” said Washington Post columnist Alyssa Rosenberg. In “Finding Dor y,” Dory is on a quest to find her long-forgotten parents and never lets her disability get in her way, even when her friends lose faith -- like Hank the octopus, who calls it “too crazy.” Some are seeing the film’s “matter-of-fact” treatment of Dory’s memory loss

and her ability to take on any challenge as a breakthrough for Hollywood. Anna Schechter works for the Young Adult Institute, helping those with developmental and intellectual disabilities. She took a group to see the film over the weekend. “The message was not lost. I think that as soon as we got out of the film, people said, ‘she never gave up, she kept swimming, she did it!’” Schechter said. Disney has a history of films that embrace the differences of their main char-

acters. Dumbo’s oversized ears allow him to fly. And even the title character in the original “Finding Nemo” puts a positive spin on his smallerthan-average fin. But “Finding Dory” gives audiences a whole spectrum of characters who thrive in the face of their disabilities. Hank the octopus is missing a tentacle, Destiny the shark has vision problems and Bailey the beluga whale has trouble with his sonar abilities. But they all ultimately find their own special skills to help Dory get home.

JK Rowling has waded into the Brexit debate, suggesting that “racists and bigots” are directing parts of the Leave campaign. The self-made multimillionaire writer, a longterm ‘Remain’ supporter, laid into both camps in an essay on her personal website, accusing them both of conjuring up “monsters calculated to stir up our deepest fears”. But the most stinging criticism in the 1,700-word piece was for Brexit supporters. She labelled them “mini-Trumps”, a reference to Republican US presidential candidate Donald Trump, who “swear that everything will be glorious as long as we disregard the experts and listen to them”. Ms Rowling accused Ukip leader Nigel Farage of standing in front of a poster that was “an almost exact duplicate of propaganda used by the Nazis” showing “a tsunami of faceless foreigners heading for our shores, among them rapists and terrorists”.

Bouchard advance at Eastbourne

Bouchard was impressive in her first-round win in Eastbourne on Monday. the seaside facility did little to help the courts, left to the elements on a chilly day of 15 Celsius temperatures. “I was hoping for today but it doesn’t look good,” said Swiss Bencic, who beat Agnieszka Radwanska a year ago to win the title. “When they don’t cover the courts, we have no chance to practise. “I guess it’s the same for everyone, but still it’s a little bit of a disadvantage.” Local officials explained that the training courts have

no proper drainage, which is required to make covers work. As the area is a public park for the rest of the year, the investment was likely not deemed critical. The 19-year-old Bencic, ranked eighth, is keen to get stuck into her final week before the June 27 start of Wimbledon after slightly injuring her leg when slipping last week in Birmingham, a fall which forced her to retire in the first round. Ganguly does not rule out coaching India in future

AFC backs India’s restructuring plans

Sourav Ganguly

Kolkata, Jun 21 (IANS): Former India captain Sourav Ganguly did not rule out the idea of coaching the national cricket team, saying that he would want to appear for an interview in future. Ganguly is member of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Cricket Advisory Ccommittee (CAC) along with V.V.S. Laxman and Sachin Tendulkar, assigned to pick the next India head coach. The trio are set to interview 21 candidates, who have applied to be the head coach of the national team here on Tuesday afternoon. “I have never had the chance of giving an interview (for the team India coaching job). Hopefully someday will sit for it,” Ganguly said at an event here where he announced the name of his book -- ‘A century is not enough’.

The book is not an autobiography though and deals with the challenges a sportsman faces. Ganguly is working with veteran journalist Gautam Bhattacharya to pen it down and Juggernaut Books are set to publish it sometime next year. Speaking about selecting the India coach, the 43-yearold said, “It’s amazing how life is. Twenty years back I first played for the country. Now I have the opportunity to select a coach. I messed it up in 2005-06 (indirectly pointing to the appointment of Greg Chappell when he was captaining India) and I have been given the opportunity again.” “Honestly two and a half years ago I was thinking of being here myself, and now I am selecting one.” “This time I have support from Sachin, Laxman and the BCCI secretary, so hopefully we will be selecting the right person,” the former southpaw added. After the interviews, the panel will recommend the names to BCCI President A nura g Tha kur, who is currently in Dharamsala for the board’s first ever fourday annual conclave from Tuesday.

P A N A J I , J un 2 1 (Agencies): The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) believes India’s plans to make the Indian Super League (ISL) the top tier league and introduce three other tiers is a step in the right direction. The AIFF last month told stakeholders that the ISL will be India’s premier football competition from 201718 and the I League will be converted into League One with no promotion to the top league, at least in the initial years. A streamlined calendar, more friendly matches for the national team and leagues that run simultaneously for seven months are highlights of the new restructuring, and it has now emerged that the plans have the backing of the confederation. “As we have observed throughout the continent, building a strong and highly competitive local league plays an important role in achieving success in the AFC Champions League. The restructuring in Indian football, with strong guidance by the AIFF and its president Praful Patel, can definitely be the catalyst for club football to thrive and compete among the continent’s best,” AFC president Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa told TOI in an exclusive interview.

Jason Gillespie calls for revival of CL T20 S y d ne y , J un 2 1 ( A g en c i es ) : F o r m e r Australia fast bowler Jason Gillespie calls for the revival of Champions League T20, which was scrapped after six seasons. Gillespie believes that the reintroduction of the tournament could very well lift the profile of the domestic T20 teams. The English T20 tournament is right in the middle of the summer, where many players are busy on national duties and hence the schedule becomes extremely crowded. Gillespie, the current coach of Yorkshire, played just one T20I for Australia, way back in 2005. He believes that that there is no need for a bilateral T20I series, which are less in numbers anyway and the World T20 can be the only competition where the teams play each other. “If you think about it, there is not a great deal of T20 played internationally,” Gillespie wrote in the Evening Standard. “There are World Twenty20s but they are at least two years apart. “While there may be T20 matches in bilateral series, there are not usually too many of them — and let’s face it, they’re a money-grab,” Gillespie wrote in Evening Standard. “Perhaps you don’t even need to have T20 matches between countries outside the World T20. Perhaps that would be the way to promote the Champions League and give it the status and profile it deserves. “As was the case before it was halted, you would stage it in a three-week block in

a single country. “It’s a fantastic opportunity for the game and all involved should look closely at bringing it back.”It doesn’t seem to be on the agenda at the moment, yet I think it would be a fantastic idea to revive it.” ”I’m convinced it could be str uctured so players, administrators and media supported it. “It’s a fantastic concept: bring in the best teams from the various T20 competitions around the world and establish which of them is best. What is not to like about that?” Gillespie added. The CLT20 was an idea of the cricketing boards from India, Australia and England. The tournament was called off

only her third event since missing the clay season with back problems. She reached the semi-finals on grass in the Netherlands earlier this month. “Everyone has injuries at some point of their career, so I’m not the first person to get an injury. Obviously the other girls have also had a little something. This (the back) was my first or second serious injury, I just take it as a part of the job. It’s nothing special.” Bencic expressed no worries as she returns to fulltime tennis with Wimbledon bearing down. “ W hy wo u l d I f e e l pressure? Of course it’s ranking points, but every week someone is defending points somewhere. It’s just a normal situation. I don’t feel any pressure and have no expectations because I haven’t played a lot of matches lately.” Top seed Radwanska is also looking for training time amid the weather chaos. The Pole, who won the title on the south coast eight years ago, said that she has barely had time for any outdoor practise but is counting on better weather forecast for much of the week. “It’s only one day like this. A couple of times I just finished five minutes before the rain. I’m hoping it will be much better than the last week.”

The criticism came in a statement by Sharapova’s management company, IMG, after Reedie commented at a World Anti-Doping Agency conference on Sharapova, who is serving a two-year ban after testing positive for the prohibited substance meldonium. “ Fo r m e t h e o n ly satisfactory element in Madame Sharapova’s case was that in one year she can earn more money than the whole of WADA’s budget put together,” Reedie said. Sharapova’s lawyer, John Haggerty, took exception to Reedie’s comments, which he called unprofessional. “Justice, whether in the eyes of World Anti-Doping Agency or a court, must be blind, including being blind to a player’s earnings,” Haggerty said in a statement. “Mr. Reedie owes an apology to Maria and to all successful tennis players unless he wants fans to think World Anti-Doping Agency has different standards for players depending on their ranking and earnings.”

named in Sweden’s provi- call time on his international sional 35-man squad for the career after the European Rio Olympics later this year Championships. but the striker has decided to “The last game of the

Germany players celebrate after Mario Gomez scored the opening goal during their Euro 2016 match against Northern Ireland. Paris, Jun 21 (Agencies): Germany’s Mario Gomez scored in the first half to secure a 1-0 win over a stubborn Northern Ireland side and a place in the last 16 of Euro 2016 as Group C winners on Tuesday. The world champions dominated the game at Parc des Princes and had created several chances when Gomez, starting his first match in the tournament, earned the points with a deflected effort from inside the box on the half-hour. Germany advance from the section with seven points from three games and a better goal difference than Poland, who beat already-eliminated Ukraine 1-0 to qualify in second place. Northern Ireland, making their first appearance at a European Championship, finished third on three points and may still reach the knockout stage as one the four best third-placed teams although their fate is out of their hands. Meanwhile, Poland also secured its first appearance in the knockout stage of a European Championship with a 1-0 win in its last Group C match against already eliminated Ukraine. Second-half substitute

Jakub Blaszczykowski struck the winner in the 54th minute. However, Poland coach Adam Nawalka will be all too aware that Robert Lewandowski, his Bayern Munich striker, missed easy chances and has yet to get off the mark at Euro 2016. Left-winger Bartosz Kapustka will miss Poland’s next match through suspension, having picked up another yellow card.

England held 0-0 by Slovakia

England were held to a 0-0 draw with Slovakia in their final group stage match for both teams in the Euro football championship here, squandering a golden opportunity to enter the pre-quarterfinals as a group winner. The English had to settle for the second spot in Group B behind Wales -- 3-0 winners on Monday against Russia. This result also meants that the Slovaks have still hopes of advancing as one of the best third-place finishers, reports Efe. England started as the clear favourites, having never lost to Slovakia, but came up

against a solid defense led by the long-time anchor of Liverpool’s backline, Martin Skrtel. Responding to popular demand, England coach Roy Hodgson fielded a starting 11 that included both Jamie Vardy and Daniel Sturridge up front while captain Wayne Rooney began the day on the bench, though he came on in the 55th minute, replacing an ineffective Jack Wilshere. The English set the pace throughout the first half, but the absence of Rooney -- recently retooled as a playmaker -- translated into fewer balls going forward for Vardy and Sturridge. Even so, the Leicester City star got his chances, the best coming in the 15th minute, when Vardy received a deep ball and eluded Skrtel, but could not beat Slovakia goalkeeper Matus Kozacik. A rocket from Adam Lallana approaching the halfhour mark forced a tremendous save from Kozacik. Dele Alli, who came on for Lallana with 30 minutes left, saw what looked like a sure goal turned aside on the line by Skrtel. England end the opening phase with five points, one behind Wales and one ahead of Slovakia.

Manoj inches closer to Rio berth BAKU, Jun 21 (PTI): Former Commonwealth Games goldmedallist Manoj Kumar (64kg) and Sumit Sangwan (81kg) stood just one win away from making the cut for Rio Olympics after advancing to the quarterfinals of the International Boxing Association’s (AIBA) World Qualifying Tournament, here on Tuesday. While Manoj got the better of Bulgaria’s Ismetov Ayrin Smetov 2-1, Sumit stormed past Sandagsuren Erdenebayar of Mongolia 3-0. Both of them will have to win their quarterfinal bouts on Thursday to be assured of an Olympic berth. Manoj was the first to take the ring and he rallied to beat Ismetov in his pre-quarterfinal contest. The Indian fought back after losing the opening round against an aggressive rival. “Manoj endured a very tough bout but to his credit, he not just hung in there but also fought back brilliantly. His opponent was a very sharp puncher but he sustained a cut in the second round which slowed him down. Manoj took advantage of it and came back,” national coach Gurbax Singh Sandhu said. The former Asian bronzemedallist will now face Tajikistan’s Rakhimov Shavkatd-

zhon, who defeated Bahrain’s Williams Rashield in his last-16 stage contest. Sumit, on the other hand, hardly broke a sweat to outpunch Erdenebayar in his prequarterfinal bout. Sumit will next face Russia’s Petr Khamukov, who got the better of Slovakia’s Denis Lazer. “Sumit fought with a lot of calmness. He applied his brain and made sure that he never got too close to his opponent. It was a very dominating performance by him,” Sandhu said. Late last night, former World Championships bronzemedallist Vikas Krishan (75kg) also advanced to the pre-quarterfinals with a 3-0 win over Japan’s Takahashi Makoto. The Indian will face Georgia’s Kvachatadze Zaal late on Tuesday. The tournament has 39 qualifying spots up for grabs -- two in the 49kg category, five each in 52kg, 56kg, 60kg, 64kg, 69kg, 75kg and 81kg, and one each in 91kg and +91kg. Over 400 boxers from more than 100 countries are vying for these slots in the final qualifying tournament for amateur boxers. India have not sent any entry in the 56kg category as Shiva Thapa has already qualified for the Rio Games during the Asian qualifiers in March.

Moreover, Bach also noted that the Russian Olympic Committee had fulfilled all the demands of the IAAF, and stressed that the IAAF should make individual decisions on admitting Russian athletes to the Games in Rio.According to the IOC chief, if Russian track and field athletes are allowed to compete in Rio, they will be part of the national team.
