Rudy, Gov lead Intl. Yoga Day in Nagaland Staff Reporter/Correspondent

DIMAPUR/KOHIMA, Jun 21 (NPN): Thousands of yoga enthusiasts took part in the International Yoga Day (IYD) programmes that were led by Union Minister of State for Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, Rajiv Pratap Rudy in Dimapur and Nagaland Governor, P.B. Acharya in Kohima on June 21. Rudy, who was assigned to observe IYD in Nagaland, led the event at Argi Expo site Exposition Hall, Dimapur. Rudy encouraged the people in Nagaland to practice yoga in their daily lives. He said “yoga is a skill of looking good, smart and intelligent” and that regular practice of yoga would enhance fitness of mind and body. The minister said he was impressed by the turnout even though the event was organized within a short span of time under the Ministry of Skill Development with Beauty and Wellness Sector Skill Council and Ministry of AYUSH. NPF to vote for NDA Prez nominee: Dr. Shürhozelie DIMAPUR, JUN 21 (NPN): NPF president and chief minister of Nagaland Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsü has made it unequivocally clear that NPF will vote for the NDA candidate as the next president of India. In a statement, he pointed out that NPF had been an ally of non-Congress party since late 1970s and also formed the Democratic Alliance of Nagaland (DAN) in 2003 (with non-Congress parties) in which then NDA chairman George Fernandes was a signatory. Dr. Shürhozelie said DAN had grown and today NPF along with BJP including 7 independent MLAs have been maintaining a spirit of healthy alliance especially after formation of North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) in May 2016 and also in Manipur where four NPF legislators are part of the BJP-led government. He said the alliance with BJP was based on principles to ensure maximum benefit, development and good governance to the people of the region. He went on to reiterate that NPF will vote for the NDA candidate as a permanent ally of BJP and NDA and also a principal component of NEDA.

Over 1000 yoga enthusiast took part to observe the 3rd edition of the IYD, including teams from the NSS, NCC, Assam Rifles, NYKS, Bharat Scouts and Guides, students, YRS staff and officials, Army, National Ayush Mission Na-

galand, Patanjali Yog Samiti, Kohima; Indira Gandhi Academy, and other government officials. Speaking to the media persons after the programme, director Youth Resources and Sports, Linda Solo said the event was a success. She clarified that Yoga was a kind of exercise and physiotherapy to keep us healthy and had nothing to do with religion.

It may be mentioned that the idea of an International Day of Yoga came into being when the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi proposed the idea while addressing the 69thsession of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on September 27, 2014. Subsequently, UN approved the proposal and declared June 21 as “International Day of Yoga”.

68% govt teachers do not attend work: Gov

KO H I M A , J U N 2 1 (NPN): Nagaland Governor, P.B. Acharya has again expressed anguish that 68% of government school teachers do not attend duties and opined that it was the chief factor why government school students failed to achieve good results. He said this while addressing at the Semoma Students Welfare Board Trust (SSWBT) after distributing Tata Trust scholarship 2017 at Durbar Hall, Raj Bhavan on Wednesday. Acharya further called upon teachers do justice by carrying out their duties responsibly. On the occasion, Acharya also congratulated the student achievers and urged them focus on skill-based education in order to be employable. Meanwhile, SSWBT secretary K. Seyie in his keynote address highlighted the activities of trust since its inception in 2000. Seyie informed that SSWBT has been granting stipends to around 40

students annually for past 15 years and received help from Sir Dorabji Tata Trust in 2016, He also informed that under the welfare board, 38 girl students are given 50% subsidy and offered free tuitions in Hindi, Mathematics and science besides other necessities like medical aid, exposure trip within and outside the state and extracurricular activities. Altogether 80 students from across the state, including eight students from Myanmar (studying in Nagaland) received the scholarship sponsored by Tata Trust. SSWBT members, village GB’s, government officials and others attended the programme.

Controversy over firing incident KO H I M A , J U N 2 1 (IANS): A gunfight broke between the Indian Army para commandos and militants in Nagaland’s Mon district bordering Myanmar in the early hours of Wednesday, a police official here said. The exchange of fire took place in Choknyu village near Tapi bridge, when suspected militants fired at the para commandos. “The gunfight lasted for an hour and suspected NSCN-K and ULFA-I militants retreated back to the jungles after intensive firing from the para commandos,” a Nagaland police official told IANS. Intelligence officials said that the militants had

sneaked into Nagaland from Myanmar to create terror. Mon Correspondent adds: There were conflicting reports about the incident. As per Mon police report, the firing incident took place in Choknyu village when one person, identified as Avihoto was on a hunting trip. Police said Avihoto, reportedly a worker at the ongoing bridge construction over Tapi River, had crossed over Tapi river towards Choknyu area for hunting with a 12 bore gun. On seeing a wild cat, he took his shot at the animal at around 8.30 p.m. However, police said he

suddenly heard shots being fired from Choknyu side. He was not aware that the AR patrolling party was in that area, police said. In this regard, the Assam Rifles personnel detained Avihoto for accidental firing on the patrolling party. Meanwhile, Konyak Union has expressed dismay for violation of its resolution. In this regard, KU has directed its Mon Unit to take appropriate action against Avihoto for violating the hunting restriction imposed by the KU, which is from March 1 to October 31. Further, KU has appealed to all to maintain peace within its jurisdiction.

DIMAPUR, JUN 21 (NPN): Nagaland Gover nor, PB Achar ya, on Wednesday urged the Myanmar Naga students, whom he invited for interaction at Raj Bhavan, Kohima, to be the “Game Changers” of their society. The students, who were recipients of the SSWBT/ TATA Trusts Scholarship, 2017, were also encouraged to study and work hard and to be torch bearers of their community. According to Raj Bhavan PRO, the governor said “Your empowerment of education should be for the development of your areas and you should give back to the society.” The governor also highlighted various scholarships that Colleges and Universities were offering to students through Indian National Fellowship Centre, Mumbai. Acharya advised the students to avail such opportunities and gain out of it. Further, he informed the student that talks were held with the Central Government to open educational institutes in border areas so students need not travel to far away towns and cities for education. He said some Universities were keen to enter into Public Private Partnership (PPP) for opening institutions in the border areas, which would be beneficial for them. During interaction, the governor expressed his concern for the Naga brothers and sisters from across the border, their social upliftment and empowerment. Focusing on social issues, the governor expressed the need to empower the students through education. He also appealed to the citizens to be local guardians of students who did not have family or relatives in the towns they study. “One should invite these students, interact with them and make them feel at home. This will strengthen the Naga bonding.” Acharya opined.

Khango Konyak elected as new NSCN/GPRN chairman D I M A P U R , J un 2 1 (NPN): ‘Lt. Gen’ (Retd) Khango Konyak was unanimously elected as chairman/ president of NSCN/GPRN on June 20, 2017 following the demise of S.S. Khaplang on June 9, 2017. This was stated in a communiqué issued by the MIP. Born on July 17, 1943 at Yangkhao village and christened Bechung Khango, he joined the Naga national service in 1963 at the age of 20 and after completing basic military training, was inducted into the Naga Army. According to MIP, while in his teens, ‘Lt. Gen’ (Retd) Khango got inspired by heroic exploits of Naga Army fighting foes. In 1966 Khango went to erstwhile East Pakistan on Alee (Foreign) Command and in 1976. He was promoted as ‘2nd Lt’ and commanded 50 cadres who went to China under Isak Chishi Swu and Th. Muivah which they reached in 1977. The journey on foot was arduous and they had to go without food and water for weeks and took several months to reach China after trekking through mountains, hills, crossing

deep and dangerous rivers and also evading enemy forces. In his military career, MIP said ‘Lt. Gen.’ (Retd) Khango held many prestigious positions both “at home and abroad” such as commander of units, battalions, brigades during which he witnessed crucial victories in battles and bringing laurels to the army. In his speech on being appointed as chairman NSCN/GPRN, ‘Lt. Gen.’

(Retd) Khango recalled his services that spanned 54 years under various capacities till his appointment as chairman and gave thanks to God for having reached such a position. He also remembered many his comrades who died in action and how he could survive death by hair’s breadth because of the Almighty. The newly elected NSCN/GPRN chairman lamented on how many educated Naga leaders led Nagas astray and had caused divisions and factions within for selfish and vested interests. However, regardless of all these Khango said he remained firm to serve NSCN/GPRN and pledged to carry on the unfulfilled task of late S.S. Khaplang. MIP also pointed out that despite internal crisis in 1988, 2011 and 2015 Khango refrained from involving in them. Khango assured that he would serve as chairman solely in the interest of the Naga people to defend and uphold the sovereign rights, identity and dignity of the Nagas. (Cont’d on p-7)

NSCN (I-M) leaders to meet Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Staff Reporter

DIMAPUR, JUN 21 (NPN): Top NSCN/ GPRN leaders led by general secretary, Th. Muivah are set to meet the founder of Art of Living (AoL) Guru, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. According to sources, the leaders would be meeting the AoL Guru on Thursday in New Delhi.

Sources said prior to Thursday’s meeting, some senior NSCN/GPRN leaders had already met Sri Sri few months back in Bangalore. It was also learnt that GPRN/NSCN leaders are also likely to meet with Sri Sri in Bangalore. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar runs international Yoga and spiritual institutes and is also acclaimed as an ambassador of peace.
