India launches 20 satellites at one go

SRIHARIKOTA (AP), JUN 22 (PTI): Creating a record, India today successfully launched 20 satellites including 17 foreign and its earth observation satellite in a single mission in 26 minutes from here, in a crucial step to become a key player in the multi-billion dollar space launch market. In a precision launch, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) workhorse Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C34) took off in clear skies from the second launch pad of Satish Dhawan Space Centre here, about 110 km from Chennai, at 9.26 AM and placed the new generation earth observation satellite (Cartosat-2 Series) and 19 others in the designated polar Sun Synchronous Orbit (SSO) 26 minutes later. Thirteen of the satellites are from the US including the 12 earth imaging Dove satellites from Planet Labs organisation, each of which weighs just 4.7 kg, and a 110-kg earth imaging satellite called SkySat Gen-2 made by a Googleowned company. There are two Canadian satellites and one each from Germany and Indonesia. Launching 20 satellites in a single payload was like “allowing birds to fly in space”, a beaming ISRO Chairman Kiran Kumar said, adding, “PSLV C-34 has done its job.” Earlier, ISRO had sent 10 satellites into orbit in a single mission in 2008. RBI may get a new chief before Parl’s monsoon session

NEW DELHI, JUN 22 (PTI): A new Governor for RBI may be appointed before the start of the monsoon session of Parliament next month even as former RBI Deputy Governor Rakesh Mohan appears to be emerging as the front runner for the job. Sources in Finance Ministry said the government is close to picking the successor of Raghuram Rajan, who last week announced his decision not to seek a second term after his current term comes to an end on September 4. The appointment, they said, was likely by mid-July. Currently India’s Executive Director in the Washington- based International Monetary Fund, Mohan is being mentioned in official circles as the front runner to bag the coveted job in Mint Street. Others who are said to be in the fray for the RBI top job include SBI chief Arundhati Bhattacharya, former RBI deputy governor Subir Gokarn and Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das. RBI Deputy Governor Urjit Patel and Chief Economic Advisor Arvind Subramanian were also considered to be in reckoning. Mohan, who studied at Imperial College, University of London as well as Yale University, holds a Ph. D in Economics from Princeton. He was Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) from September 9, 2002 to October 31, 2004 and July 2, 2005 to June 10, 2009.

MoD objection to road construction irks Arunachal ‘Need for minimal interference NEW DELHI, JUN 22 (PTI): Arunachal Pradesh government has knocked the doors of the Union Home Ministry alleging discrimination at the hands of the Ministry of Defence (MoD) which had red-flagged its ambitious highway project connecting remote areas of the state. During a recent meeting, which was attended by officials of the state government and representatives of Defence and Home Ministries, a senior Army officer raised objections to the alignment of the 1,500km transArunachal Pradesh highway connecting Tawang with Vijoynagar. The Army officer opined that the road would be too closer to the SinoIndian border and sought changes, a suggestion that upset the state government, official sources said. The state government alleged that the army was creating hurdles in its development project and pointed out that the Defence Ministry gave clearances to eight advance landing grounds (ALGs) near the border. The construction for ALGs, at Mechuka, Zero and Tezu were being completed without informing the state government and the local administration. However, the Ministry sources that the infrastructure was being built for defence of the country for which required

permission was taken from the state government. Pasang Dorjee, an MLA from Arunachal Pradesh, said that “in the case of the highway, the army is putting hurdles. Instead of saying that the road should be closer to the border, like China did, the army is saying it should not be along the border.” Dorjee claimed that the land for the ALGs was given on a condition that it would be used for both military and civilian purposes. “Now, they are shutting the doors for us. When the Mechuka ALG was inaugurated, neither the state government nor the district administration was informed,” he said. Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Kalikho Pul will soon write a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to lodge a protest against the Defence Ministry’s “attitude”, he said. Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju, who belongs to Arunachal Pradesh, said that he was informed about the development and would soon convene a meeting to sort out the differences. Former militant leader and aide found dead in Mnp Correspondent IMPHAL, JUN 22: Former chairman of PREPAK (VC) Ningombam Nongdrenkhomba alias Nabachandra (57) along with two surrendered militants were found dead inside the 7th Manipur Rifles battalion headquarters in Imphal’s Khabeisoi in a mysterious circumstance. The slain militant leader has been lodged inside the 7th MR complex since he laid down arms before the authorities along with some other aides in December 2014. His aide Leisangthem Sanjit Singh alias Chingkhei (41) was also found dead inside his lodging place with bullet injury marks. Nongdrenkhom’s wife came to the complex to visit her husband after he failed to respond to her calls. Security men of the battalion suspect the assailant(s) might have intruded from outside the complex from an unfenced portion of the complex taking the advantage of the festival. nine one-horned rhinos in the park this year. Ahead of the assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party in Assam had campaigned against the then Congress government’s failure to protect the rhinos. The state government also made a major reshuffle in the ranks of park authorities and brought at least four new officers, including one Assistant Conservator of Forest (ACF), one Forest Ranger and two Deputy Conservator of Forest to strengthen the antipoaching measures. Earlier, the Assam government had also suspended the Director of the Kaziranga National Park for allegedly not disclosing to Assam Forest Minister Pramila Rani Brahma about poaching of a rhino when she was visiting the park. Brahma had recently said that the anti-poaching measures in the park could be overhauled.

SHILLONG, JUN 22 (PTI): The Centre has directed all northeastern states whose autonomous district councils have received Rs 1,000 crore special assistance from the Ministry of Tribal Affairs to constitute two committees for utilizing the fund. Officials said 10 autonomous district councils in Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura have been given shares of the Special Assistance Grant for scheduled areas in February. “We have been asked to constitute two committees – one headed by the chief executive members of the ADCs and the state level committee headed by the chief secretary,” Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said. He said one of the reasons in the delay in releasing the grant amount to the ADCs, Meghalaya has three, was due to the fact that the state government was waiting for a complete clarity on the guidelines for spending the grant.

The guideline was issued by the finance ministry on June 10 and was received by the state government on June 14. It will be be mandatory for the ADCs to consult MPs and MLAs while proposing any projects. As per the guideline, the state-level committee will examine the project proposals received from the district council level committees. Both would be responsible for monitoring the implementation of the projects. “The state level committee will approve suitable projects and intimate the details of approved projects to NITI Aayog,” Sangma said. Of the 1000 crore special assistance, Rs 267.4 crore was sanctioned for three ADCs in Meghalaya for 2015-16, Rs 16.86 crore for three ADCs in Mizoram, Rs 539.79 crore for three ADCs in Assam and Rs 175.95 crore one in Tripura. The funds have already been deposited with the respective governments.

NSU to be shifted from Manipur to other state: BJP

IMPHAL, JUN 22: Manipur BJP Wednesday expressed its apprehension of Manipur missing the golden chance of having the first-ever national level sports university. Addressing a news conference, former Manipur BJP president Sh Shantikumar alleged that Ibobi government has not taking the issue seriously. He alleged that the Centre had sent a letter on May 23 last asking the state government to settle the problem of land acquisition for construction of the university within June 2016. In the letter, Union joint secretary (development) of youth affairs and sport Rajvir Singh said, that if not settle then government of India might reconsider the site of the proposed National Sport University. Union ministry of youth affairs and sports was in process of setting up sport university in Manipur after Rs 100 crore was allocated in the Union budget for 2014-15. In August 2015, Manipur government had handed over 336.93 acres of land at Yaithibi Loukon, Thou-

bal to the Union ministry of youth affairs and sports for the university although the Centre asked for only 200 acres. However, certain cases are pending at courts with regard to some portions of land acquired for the university. BJP leader alleged that a patch of land measuring about 34 acres falling in the middle was still under litigation and has not been acquired so far. He further said that the land in controversy was not only in 34 acres but still cases of 63 acres were pending at High Court of Manipur and remaining 273.93 acres of land was under objection from 200 pattaders. Union DoNER Minister Dr Jitender had already sought a report of the settlement for the controversial land acquisition which the state government has to provide within June 23. “But, the government is yet to give the reply till today,” Shantikumar alleged. “The situation is not taking political mileage but the dream of our young generation for having the National Sport University is shattered owing to negligence on the part of Ibobi government.

Goodmorning sis Grace n Akong.. Wishing you both a blessed and wonderful birthday. May our Almighty continue to bless both of you a happy long journey called LIFE. Happy Birthday.

Swamy attacks CEA; Arun Jaitley jumps to his defence Rajan gone, now Swamy guns for chief economic advisor

NEW DELHI, JUN 22 (PTI): After forcing RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan out, BJP MP Subramanian Swamy on Wednesday opened a new front, targeting Chief Economic Adviser Arvind Subramanian and demanded his sacking, ruffling feathers in the government and the party. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and BJP quickly stepped in to dismiss Swamy’s statement in a bid to douse speculation whether his statement had the backing of anyone in the government or the party. “Well, the government has full confidence in CEA Arvind Subramanian. His advice to government from time to time has been of great value,” the Finance Minister told a media briefing where questions were asked on Swamy’s statement. BJP national secretary Shrikant Sharma said the party does not agree with Swamy’s criticism of Subramanian and termed it as “completely his personal opinion”. Attacking Subaramanian, a former IMF economist who was appointed in October 2014 by the NDA government to the post of CEA in the Finance Ministry, Swamy referred to some of his views on Indian economy he had held during his tenure with the multilateral lending institution. “Who said to US Cong on 13/3/13 the US should act against India to defend US Pharmaceuticals interests? Arvind Subramanian MoF !! Sack him!!!,” he tweeted. Swamy’s attack comes in the wake of reports of Arvind Subramanian being among the probable successors of Rajan as the country’s central bank chief. “Guess who encouraged Congi to become rigid on GST clauses? Jaitley’s economic adviser Arvind Subramanian of Washington DC,” Swamy tweeted, saying he is “helping Jaitely to recognise the enemies in our camp”. In a

Subramanian Swamy series of tweets attacking the chief economic adviser, who is an NRI, he said, “Now PTs (Patriotic Tweeples) can understand why our core economic sectors could not perform last two years. Trojan horses galore in MoF/Fin Institutions.” “Was AS (Arvind Subramanian) deposing before US Cong Committee against India as a US citizen or Indian? Does any PT know?,” he asked. The Congress exploited Swamy’s statement to say that his target was not the CEA but Jaitley and asked whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi is handing over Finance Ministry to Swamy. Former Infosys co-founder T V Mohandas Pai said in the face of Swamy’s attack, people are asking a question “who is running the country.” “I think it is very important that the Prime Minister and Finance Minister put their foot down where he gets off. If Swamy has got some evidence, got something, then they can talk to the people in the party and decide what they want. Whatever you want to do, do it quietly,” he said. Referring to Swamy’s attacks on Rajan, Pai said the government said it supported him but the BJP MP still went after him. S w a my h a d e a r l i e r launched a scathing attack and demanded the sacking of Rajan accusing him of destroying economy by keeping interest rates high. Then

too the government and BJP had disapproved of his comments but Rajan last week announced that he would not seek a second term in the RBI after September when his three year term ends. At the press conference called to brief media on decisions taken by the Cabinet, Jaitley said, “In fact, the presentation on textiles made just now (at the briefing) on textiles and garments sector was prepared in active consultation with him.” Referring to the party’s statement distancing itself from Swamy’s latest attack, the minister said even the BJP does not concur with Swamy’s views. “They have said they do not share Swamy’s view,” he added. Jaitley said he would also add one more fact and raised a question. “From the point of view of discipline of Indian politicians, to what extent should we attack those... discipline and constraints of office prevent them from responding. And this has happened more than once,” he said. Asked by a re por ter whether people like Swamy should not be reigned in, Jaitley shot back “thank you for your suggestion”. As opposition Congress saw Swamy’s real target in Jaitley, IT and Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad responded saying, “integrity of Arun Jaitley is impeccable. His transparency and integrity is unquestionable.” Asked for his comments on Rajan not seeking a second term because the government did not defend him in face of Swamy’s attack, Jaitley said, “The premise of the question is incorrect. I had categorically spoken on this subject when the comments were made about the RBI Governor. Even party president had specifically stated that party does not agree with that comment which was made.”

Massive search ops in Pathankot FS in Seoul for final push to India’s NSG bid PATHANKOT, JUN 22 (PTI): A day after a parliamentary panel claimed some “terrorists were still hiding” in villages close to the “vulnerable” Pathankot airbase, Punjab Police Wednesday carried out a massive door-to-door search in at least 28 hamlets near here. “We conducted a search operation in 28 villages starting at 5 am for five hours. We asked people whether they have seen any person or suspect who is not from their village. They said they have not seen anyone,” Pathankot SSP Rakesh Kaushal said. Led by the Pathankot SSP, a total of 300 policemen including 2 SP-rank officers conducted search operation in villages such as Dhira, Tajpur, Akalgarh and Chonga near Pathankot airforce base. The search team also comprised highly trained and specially equipped Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) commandoes. The police also inspected security outside the Pathankot airforce base and

found that everything was safe. “Everything is safe there,” said Kaushal, adding that the airforce was also secured by its own Garud commandoes. Search operations were also carried in areas inhabited by ‘Gujjars’, officials said. “We found nothing suspicious,” said the SSP. He, however, said security has been intensified in the border district which had witnessed a terror attack at the airforce base in January. Yesterday in Jammu, Chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee (PSC) on Home Affairs P Bhattacharya had said, “After going back from Pathankot, we made our suggestions to the government and said that there can be further attack on Pathankot... We were told by the villagers that some terrorists were still hiding in the villages there.” “Do you know that a few days ago, government asked the CRPF, BSF and the Army to guard the air force station because some terrorists are hiding there...,” said Bhattacharya.

SEOUL/NEW DELHI, JUN 22 (PTI): Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar Wednesday arrived in the South Korean capital ahead of the crucial NSG Plenary from tomorrow, where India is hoping to clinch membership which is being strongly opposed by China and some other countries. Jaishankar, who was closely monitoring the goingson during the official-level meet of the 48-nation grouping which started on Monday, arrived in Seoul this afternoon to lobby with members to boost India’s prospects of getting membership. “While it is true that Foreign Secretary has flown to Seoul, the NSG plenary hasn’t even begun yet.... This is a delicate and complex process. At this point, let us not speculate,” a government source in New Delhi said. Senior External Affairs Ministry Official Amandeep Singh Gill, in-charge of ‘Disarmament & International Security’ division, is already

in Seoul since Monday to garner support as well as explain India’s case, another source said. Meanwhile, China continued to make ambivalent statements on India’s bid for NSG membership amid clear indications that it was unrelenting in its opposition. Clubbing India and Pakistan once again, the Chinese Foreign Ministry in Beijing said members of Nuclear Suppliers Group have had three round of unofficial discussions on the membership of the two countries. China is seeking to equate India’s impeccable non-proliferation record with that of Pakistan for which it is batting. The NSG works under

the principle of unanimity and even one country’s vote against India will scuttle its bid. While majority of the elite group members backed India’s membership, it is understood that apart from China, countries like Turkey, South Africa, Ireland and New Zealand were not in favour of India’s entry into the NSG. China maintains opposition to India’s entry, arguing that it has not signed Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). India has asserted that being a signatory to the NPT was not essential for joining the NSG as there has been a precedent in this regard, citing the case of France.

Between The Lines

Travesty of justice

Vol. XXVI NO. 195 Dimapur, thursday, June 23, 2016

I

Discomforting issue

n the light of BJP MP Yogi Adityanath’s continuing hate speeches against religious minorities, minorities are very concerned about the fallout. Recent hate speeches hurled by political leaders of some communities are not isolated but are made too often. India is a land of many diverse religions, races and castes and the fabulous line paints a picture of a rich tapestry of a wonderful and huge country. The line also explains the irrelevant and propensity among many who continue to mouth the oft-used context of India being so diversified but unified. The concept of unity in diversity may sound nationalistically correct but aside from that, the ground reality explains why some fall prey to the old adage ‘don’t mistake the wood for trees’. India is still not fully united in as far as the need for social and communal harmony because there is gain when conflict exists among sections of people. The diversity of India has developed into a fissiparous tendency which explains the resurgence of extreme fundamentalism in various parts of the country whether on communal, caste of religious lines. The big divide in India that began during the pre-independence era continues to be between the organisations claiming to defend people of the majority Hindu religion and the Muslims. The voices of reason may be many but are subdued. Hate speeches in a supposedly secular and multi-religious India are not rare, but those delivering venomous speeches have more often than not either evaded arrest, dodged the authorities, or have not been taken to task for various reasons and that is the tragedy that secular India faces. If the government of India including state governments taken prompt criminal actions long time back, India would have been spared of many communal riots and loss of so many innocent lives. It may be recalled, that last year, in protest against attacks on those espousing freedom of expression, over 212 renowned personalities from writer, authors, academicians, historians and national award winners returned their awards in a show of solidarity and protest against the NDA government’s disinclination to crack the whip on erring ministers and members. RBI governor Raghuram Rajan, had also raised the issue last year as he opined, that tolerance and respect was needed to improve the climate for progress. Needless to say, he has been targeted by Subramaniam Swamy Rajya Sabha member of the BJP during the past weeks and has decided not to seek a second term. A lesson could be drawn from the plight of M.F.Husain, India’s most famous and internationally known as ‘India’s Picasso’ was forced into exile and who died in London on June 9,2011 at the age of 96. Hussein was hounded by radical groups and worse, even the government in 2006 dragged him to the courts on charges of hurting religious sentiments. Strangely, artists and cine artistes who initially mildly protested against encroachment on freedom of expression, did little and eventually, Husain, alone and in perpetual fear, had to flee India in 2006.If India’s image as a free nation for free trade is to be convincing, the Prime Minister should deal strictly with such people and put them in their places without fear or favour.

W

ith all due respects to the Gujarat High Court, I beg to differ with its judgment that the firing by Ehsan Jafri provoked the mob to kill him. I knew him and he was a staunch Congressman. The Gulbarg Society massacre was the doing of local Gujarati leaders hoping to parochialise the people. When Jafri was surrounded by the Hindu mob, he rang me up, seeking my help to rescue him from the frenzied crowd he had around him. I rang up the Home Ministry in Delhi and told them about the telephone call. They said they were in touch with the state government and were “watching” the situation. As I put down the telephone, the bell rang again and Jafri was at the other end, beseeching me to do something because the mob was threatening to lynch him. His cry for help still resounds in my ears.I admit I could not do anything beyond ringing up the ministry once again. Therefore, the court’s verdict that Jafri provoked the crowd is misplaced. It is a travesty

of justice. But then the Bench is not to blame because it has to go by the evidence placed before it. The prejudiced police had neither done their job, nor homework thoroughly, and so the court had come to the conclusion that the provocation came from Jafri.I hope the matter will come up before the Supreme Court and the real facts may emerge for the knowledge of the wider public. This is important because the general impression is that Jafri was to blame. The tragedy is that even the judges have now been taken in by the sordid job done by the police. India is a pluralistic state and it is ruled by the Constitution which Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs and Christians in the Constituent Assembly together had adopted. It goes to the credit of leaders of the national struggle that they adopted a secular constitution although the population of Hindus was an overwhelming 80 per cent. The Hindu Mahasabha which gave birth to the Jan Sangh could not even return 10 members to the Lok Sabha. The

ZPON (N) on CM’s qualification row

T

hough ZPO (N) is an apolitical organization it is compelled to intervene on the qualification row of Shri. T R Zeliang because of the fact that the constant paper war between the NPF and the Congress party is going beyond limit. No doubt the case is in the court and the court will decide who is right and who is wrong, but being the apex Zeliang tribal organization, ZPO (N) would like to make its stand clear once and for all. It came as a surprise to the whole Nagas particularly the Zeliang community when T R Zeliang was elected to take over the reign of Chief Ministership from Shri. Neiphui Rio who chose to go to Delhi as Lok Sabha member. Never had there been any CM from Zeliang Community nor can we expect any in the next few decades, so the Zeliangs were looking forward to reap the benefit of this good fortune. However, some few individuals from our own community blinded by some political opportunists from the advanced tribes are trying to bring down the present Govt by making a ‘big’ issue out of a ‘non-issue’. Qualification has got nothing to do in winning an election or winning the confidence of the electorates, so nobody bothered whether T R Zeliang is a graduate or a post graduate or under-matriculate. It is for the love of him and his developmental activities that made the electorates of Peren district vote him to power for the 6th times to the Nagaland Legislative Assembly. Therefore, the ZPO strongly condemn those complainants who have lost their patriotism and working at the behest of their political master from other community. Is it for the love of the Zeliangs that they are trying to bring down T R Zeliang from the seat of Chief Minister? Any Zeliang going against the welfare of his own community is highly condemnable. And that too, betraying one’s own community for settling personal grudges is not at all acceptable. Whether T R Zeliang is a graduate or an under matriculate the whole Zeliang community stand behind him for his vision and development and will continue to do so as long as he managed to occupy important seat and work for the welfare of his community. But for those few Zeliang individuals who are being blinded by other tribes to betray his own community, a day will come when the whole Zeliang will judge you for going against your own brother. he old saying goes, ‘Golden Opportunity comes but only once’. The present situation is a golden opportunity for both GoI and the Naga people for lasting and permanent solution to Asia’s oldest Naga Political embroil. The previous agreements or accords taught a good lesson that, old formulas should be avoided and find out inclusive formula to ensure permanent solution. The words Indian and Nagas remained to be a vertical line drawn between two people and this differentiation will not die down easily. Out of dozens of different Naga Political Groups, leaving aside a single group will inflame the entire future political scenario because of continuation of tug of war between the Indian and the Nagas. The entire political scenario drastically changed in the recent past. The Naga people blamed for floating of multiple Naga Political factions and the NSCN/GPRN –Reformation is not exceptional. Yet, its formation changed entire scenario from blood path to peaceful atmosphere because of visionary leaders who chosed to provide peaceful environment to the Naga people. The NSCN-IM and GoI have signed framework agreement on 3rd August 2015 after more than fifteen years political engagement but neither NSCN-IM nor GoI can guarantee the future Naga Political Situation unless it is made inclusive and transparency after all the issue is between the two entities. Unilateral abrogation of fourteen years old cease fire agreement by SS. Khaplang is also another political contribution towards permanent solution because his walking away from cease fire with GoI is right decision he have taken because he too have similar political engagement with

Still the prejudice has worked in jobs in the private sector. Very few Hindu establishments have Muslims as their employees. In fact, the Sachar Committee appointed by Dr Manmohan Singh, then the Prime Minister, has said that the condition of the Muslims in India was worse than that of Dalits. Very little improvement has been noticeable since then. Regrettably, the judgments like the one in the Jafri case could only provide the Hindutva crowd with a justification that aggressiveness of Muslims forces the Hindus to adopt a communal line. Maybe, I am overly optimistic, but I still hope that the society would realize on the whole that a country with so many complexities can survive in a pluralistic and democratic alignment. People will themselves see the incongruity between the values of the Constitution and what is being practised otherwise. Pluralism is not only an ideology to prize, but also something to cherish that it is needed for the country’s integrity.

Post-mortem

Does Nagaland need AFSPA…? A tribute to Rev Lano Longchar

A

FSPA was enacted in Nagaland in 1958. It has been almost 58 years that we……the Nagas, have witnessed Indian Army function in our State under this Act. Off-late, there has been quite a lot of clamour regarding AFSPA in Nagaland with a strong demand to repeal it. The contentious Act has been branded as ‘draconian’ and ‘against the ethos of human rights’. Almost every Stakeholder in the State has criticized AFSPA and has called for its immediate revocation. The reasons cited – return of peace in Nagaland, recognition by the Indian Govt about our ‘unique status’ and positive talks for settlement of Naga issues under Framework Agreement. The revocation of AFSPA by Tripura after 18 years, in June last year, has fuelled our demands for a similar action. First lets see why AFSPA has been revoked in Tripura after twenty seven years of insurgency? For 18 years, no armed group exists in Tripura. They have either surrendered or been eliminated and political setup in the State has been very effective under its Chief Minister. With peace and stability, the State machinery is now dealing with whatever is left. In addition, all Camps of Tripura based Groups in Bangladesh have been closed. Extortion has been eradicated in the State and there are no underground demands made to the general public or Govt officials. A premise for enactment of AFSPA, is that the State (or part of it) has to be declared ‘disturbed’. Prerogative for the same is with the State Govt. When a State feels that unrest has become ‘warlike’ and beyond control of local security forces, it approaches the Centre for assistance. The Centre, before deployment of Para-Military Forces or the Army, invokes AFSPA. Contents of the Act legitimizes presence and actions of Central Forces to control internal disturbances. Often the Act has been criticized as ‘harsh’, ’colonial’ and is believed to have been

misused by the Army. Now let us examine our State Nagaland. Have Underground Camps closed in Nagaland? Infact, they are mushrooming. Have acts of violence by NSCN (K) cadres vanished? No, they are planning more attacks. Have their camps in Myanmar closed? No, they have not. Have the ‘Factions’ stopped exploiting the people of Nagaland for unabated taxation? No, it is only increasing with increase in the number of factions. Is our Police upto meeting these challenges? No, they are not. Is the present or past political set-up devoid of underground support? Sadly, No. Whatever hatred we Nagas can austere for Security Forces, but its only them who are catching the tax collector - regardless of factional affiliation, they are the one who are catching unlicensed arms and drug smugglers. All my friends of Naga Hoho or NSF who want these Security Forces to go back to barracks – are they doing something to check this menace? Mere lectures and baseless desires cannot resolve these issues plaguing our Naga society. Moreover, is our State police in a position to deal with the sophisticated weaponry of the factions? Given the delicate peace in Nagaland and a precarious environment, no sensible Naga will desire return of violence. We have seen enough bloodshed …. Memories of anarchy are fresh. We and our children want to enjoy the fruits of this peace. I would want AFSFA to be removed, if it does not embolden other Factions and criminals and reduces undergrounds taxation. In Manipur they removed AFSFA from Imphal - see the result now - it is a stronghold of every faction and criminal activity has increased many folds as statics speak for themselves. We want that anarchy in our cities? I really don’t know? Roko Angami, Dimapur

DailyDevotion The Unchanging Golden opportunity for both GoI & Nagas Law of Judgment With what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you. —Matthew 7:2 This statement is not some haphazard theory, but it is an eternal law of God. Whatever judgment you give will be the very way you are judged. There is a difference between retaliation and retribution. Jesus said that the basis of life is retribution— “with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.” If you have been shrewd in finding out the shortcomings of others, remember that will be exactly how you will be measured. The way you pay is the way life will pay you back. This eternal law works from God’s throne down to us (see Psalm 18:25-26). Romans 2:1 applies it in even a more definite way by saying that the one who criticizes another is guilty of the very same thing. God looks not only at the act itself, but also at the possibility of committing it, which He sees by looking at our hearts. To begin with, we do not believe the statements of the Bible. For instance, do we really believe the statement that says we criticize in others the very things we are guilty of ourselves? The reason we see hypocrisy, deceit, and a lack of genuineness in others is that they are all in our own hearts. The greatest characteristic of a saint is humility, as evidenced by being able to say honestly and humbly, “Yes, all those, as well as other evils, would have been exhibited in me if it were not for the grace of God. Therefore, I have no right to judge.” Jesus said, “Judge not, that you be not judged” (Matthew 7:1). He went on to say, in effect, “If you do judge, you will be judged in exactly the same way.” Who of us would dare to stand before God and say, “My God, judge me as I have judged others”? We have judged others as sinners— if God should judge us in the same way, we would be condemned to hell. Yet God judges us on the basis of the miraculous atonement by the Cross of Christ.

wanted a system where every adult would participate. In the Constituent Assembly, Dr Rajendra Prasad, who was in the chair, wanted some educational qualification as a requirement for voters. Nehru replied that the uneducated and the ignorant constituted the main force which fought during the independence struggle. Now when the country was free, should he tell them that they were not entitled to vote? Another principle which goaded the movement was secularism. This was embodied in the Constitution which gives one person one vote, whatever their community’s strength in the country. It may be unthinkable today in certain circles of society, but the representatives of the majority community accepted this principle. So much so that the Muslim community’s leaders Constituent Assembly refused to have reservations or quotas in the legislatures, educational institutions and even in government jobs which they had enjoyed under the British. This is the practice even today.

Union of Myanmar for Naga solution in Myanmar side. If we deeply analyze the situation, ultimately we believed it to be God’s programme for the Nagas. The formation of ACAUT and its counter attack on NPGs for taxation is another serpent that bites and poisoning Naga National Movement. Yes, the collection of various taxes become intolerable burden for the Nagas. In many cases, the selfish workers forcibly collecting multiple taxes for their selfish interest, yet some case may be of genuine one. The ACAUT shouting for one government and one tax is common desire and we all are for it. We all believe, although it could not be possible at this juncture, yet solution table will provide one government where we don’t require to pay any taxes to any government anymore. However, deployment of its volunteers in all Districts and Towns of Nagaland by ACAUT against genuine taxes for the survival of Naga National Movement by collaborating with enemy have crossed their limit. The ACAUT brands the donation and few amount of taxes from Naga Businessman and Government Employees by different NPGs as ‘EXTORTIONIST’ sounds too radical and more of anti-Naga. Recently, in many news papers and medias, some individual, NGOs and even State Government objected the concealing of GoI – NSCN-IM talk blaming it anti-Naga because no Naga knows the contents of talk. However, I really wondered as to why the same people changed their chameleon colour? During 1998 general election, the same people shouted ‘We want solution, not election,’ yet some of them

became even the legislators. What was the content of NSCN-IM talk during 1998 that, they have supported to the extent of opposing democratic franchise and why the same people started complaining for non-transparency of talk today? I am not trying to blame anybody but I only want all of us to be truthful to our sacred cause. Right after the signing of 3rd August framework agreement 2015 between GoI and NSCN-IM, every newspaper carried the resentment and opposition opinion against the said agreement. Yet, the NSCN-Reformation came out openly appreciating both GoI and NSCN-IM for the agreement believing that, the NSCN-IM would open their hearts and welcome all other NPGs. The leaders of NSCNReformation only want NSCN-IM to act like elder brother of all NPGs but they only want everybody to join them which is impracticable. The President and General Secretary of NSCN-Reformation met atleast five times with NSCN-IM leaders which include two times sitting with Th. Muivah, General Secretary NSCNIM but the profit of coming closer with them was arresting and torturing of NSCN-Reformation workers by NSCN-IM which only sown the seeds of bitterness. It is only love and forgiveness which will bring us together and not by force and violent. Even today, the NCSN-IM must act maturedly towards other NPGs. The Naga issue is a sacred cause and no Naga should lose their hearts because the movement/struggle will continue till we achieve our goal and the NSCN-Reformation have committed for it. Y. Wangtin Naga, President, NSCN/GPRN-Reformation

he passing away of Rev Lano Longchar on Monday, June 20 is indeed a loss for not just the Aos but for the Nagas and all other peoples that he reached out to in his most distinguished lifetime. Though many of us will remember him for his spiritual triumph and the passion that he brought to his mission work, the other greatness of the Late Reverend was his inclusive theology—of building a national identity that went beyond the narrow confines of ‘my tribe or the self ’. His passion for sharing the gospel took him to all corners of the Naga country and he was much loved and held in reverence wherever he went. As reported in the newspapers, Rev Lano Longchar travelled widely and had preached the Gospel in at least four foreign countries, 12 states in India and to 15 tribes in Nagaland. This is testimony to the wide reach and acceptability of ‘the King’s messenger’, as one newspaper headline described the Late Reverend. In a time when Nagas are caught in the vortex of tribalism, parochialism and the distrust of the other, Rev Lano Longchar stood for peaceful coexistence and fraternity. His preaching and sharing of the gospel went far beyond the Ao country and reached out to people of all tribe and colour. Here was a missionary who had a truly national outlook, something that should not come as a surprise given that during his younger days, the Late Reverend was actively involved in the Naga national movement. Lest we forget, fraternity of the Naga people was his cherished vision. The story goes that on March 15, 1956, while serving his jail term in Shillong he committed himself to serve God for the rest of his life. And what a commitment it was. Till his last breath, Rev Lano Longchar remained devoted to serving the Lord. As long as he was able to share the gospel, the discomfort of leaving home or his failing health did not bother him. Even after turning 80 years old, he continued to travel, mostly away from home, long distances, to be able to bring the good news, healing and hope to the masses. This was a remarkable quality about him—a steadfast spirit and total surrender to his mission of serving the Lord. I had the privilege of knowing him personally and called him up on June 15, 2016 to wish him on his 81st birthday. Showing my concern for his old age and weak health, I advised him to take it slow and concentrate on his health instead. He responded by saying that he would be in Dimapur around the beginning of July for more speaking engagements! That was the last that I would ever speak to this amazing ambassador of Christ. A selfless missionary who stood for the greater cause of the gospel—a unifying figure, a true legend of our time. May his legacy continue to inspire the future generations of Nagas to unite and glory in our Lord and saviour Jesus Christ! Along Longkumer, Senior Naga journalist, Camp: New Delhi

Reader’s Post Sir,

Appeal to DC Phek

That sir, it is learnt that check post has been closed in many areas and illegal taxation is totally ban at the check post. However, Lanye Check post under your jurisdiction is one of the worst check post while travelling from Dimapur to Kiphire where police at the check post are levying Rs.200 to Rs.1000/- per load without challen. Moreover, harassment by the man in uniform is a regular one during negotiation of the tax. Now we are facing hardship that many trucks refuse to travel by this route owing to untold harassment at this check post. In the light of the above grievance faced by us, we fervently appeal your esteem authority to kindly intervene into the matter to stop such kind of unnecessary taxation and harassment to the travellers. Sir,

Follow-up appeal to district sanitation department

I regret to inform you that even after making an appeal in the month of February no action has been taken regarding the sanitation problem in Dimapur. It is the duty of the government to establish proper drainage systems, but it is the responsibility of the sanitation department to maintain these systems within the district. The poor drainage conditions in Dimapur district persists and this matter has been left unattended till today, due to which the general public suffer from unhygienic environmental conditions. The main problem concerning the labor for sanitation is that, individuals within the government use the given labour for personal work and this leaves the drainage systems in the district neglected. I should mention again that it is only due to the contributions of the concerned colony residents that we have it is not possible to keep all sections of the district check. It should be the department in concern who supervise the sanitary status of the drainage systems instead f the public. The public taking part n the maintenance of the drainage systems renders the sanitary labor redundant and it should be a priority for the departments in concern to ensure the proper management of labor regarding district and state sanitation, as we; as the state and national highway labor to ensure that proper labor is distributed towards efficient drainage management. BSP leader Maurya quits party

LUCKNOW, JUN 22 (PTI): With Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh only a few months away, BSP was jolted Wednesday, with its senior leader Swami Prasad Maurya quitting the party while attacking its chief Mayawati who slammed the “habitual party-hopper”. 62-year-old Maurya, the Leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly, said he felt “suffocated” and accused Mayawati of “auctioning” tickets for next year’s Assembly polls. The MLA from Padrauna Assembly constituency and a minister in the former Mayawati government left BSP amid speculation that he might join the ruling Samajwadi Party and could be made a minister when Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav expands his Council of Ministers on June 27. “I feel suffocated and cannot continue in the party any more,” he said at a hurriedly-convened press conference here. “Today I have written a letter informing her (Maya-

wati) that I am relinquishing all party posts,” he said. Attacking the BSP chief, Maurya said, “Tickets are being openly auctioned by Mayawati on a large scale. She is not making the right choice of candidates. Tickets are not only on sale in the party, they are being auctioned.” He also accused Mayawati of “murdering” the values and principles of B R

Ambedkar and BSP founder Kanshi Ram. To a question, Maurya said he would announce his next course of action soon. He is said to be in close touch with senior SP leaders Shivpal Singh Yadav and Mohd Azam Khan, giving rise to rumours that he was cosying up to the ruling party in the state. Soon after Maurya announced his resignation,

Mayawati told media that he had quit as he was unhappy after she refused to accept his demand for giving tickets not only to him but also to his son and daughter. “I would have expelled in a few days. He has done a great favour to the party by leaving it himself,” she said. Slamming Maurya as a “habitual party-hopper”, she said she had not only accepted him in her party fold but also had given him the coveted post of LoP in the state Assembly. She dared Maurya to disclose as to how much money he had paid her for his party ticket to contest the last polls. Mayawati said Maurya was insisting for tickets not only for himself but also for his son and daughter. “I said nothing doing. BSP does not encourage dynastic politics,” she said. “May be Samajwadi Party will give tickets to Maurya and his son and daughter,” she said.

‘Jung be made a co-accused’ NEW DELHI, JUN 22 (PTI): Attacking Lt Governor Najeeb Jung, AAP Wednesday wrote to him demanding that he and ACB chief M K Meena be made “co-accused” in four cases pertaining to alleged scams during the Sheila Dikshit government including one that is related to prices of natural gas from the KG basin. 12 Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs went to Raj Niwas, the LG’s residence, around 11.30 AM with the demands. They later claimed that Jung “refused” to meet them, but the LG Secretariat said Jung’s schedule was already prepared for the day and procedures have to be followed for seeking an appointment. The development came after Delhi’s Anti-Corruption Branch Chief Meena said Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal may also be quizzed apart from Dikshit in the tanker scam case after an FIR was lodged, leaving the AAP and Kejriwal bristling with anger. Accusing Jung of protecting the alleged culprits, AAP MLA Somnath Bharti said that the party has also approached Delhi Assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goel demanding that the cases be forwarded to the House Committee on petitions, which he said has the power to summon “even the LG”. “You (LG) have been protecting Smt Dikshit in these four FIRs through your inaction. Shri Meena, imposed by the Union government as ACB chief, has also colluded with you in this criminal activity. “Kindly forward my letter to ACB with a direction that Shri Meena and yourself should be made co-accused in these four FIRs,” a letter signed by AAP MLA Rajendra Pal Gautam said. An offical in the LG Secretariat received the letter. Bharti claimed that the MLAs were frisked “like a terrorist” at the Raj Niwas and were not given an appointment with Jung though he was present inside the Raj Niwas premises.

Dalit girl ragging case: FIR against five A-TO-Z COACHING CENTRE

KOZHIKODE, JUN 22 (PTI): Five students of a nursing college in Karnataka have been booked in connection with the alleged ragging of a first-year Dalit girl student, who has been hospitalised here with severe stomach problems, police said. The case was registered against Lakshmi of Kollam, Athira of Idukki and Krishna, Shilpa and Joe of Al Qamar College of Nursing at Gulburga, based on a statement from the 19-year-old victim, who is undergoing treatment at Kozhikode Medical College

Hospital, Sub Inspector of KMCH Police Station, Habib said. He said the girl had named only five of the eight seniors who were involved. The SI said her condition was now stable. A copy of the FIR had been sent to Gulbarga Police commissioner for further investigation into the matter, he said. Police said the victim was allegedly forced to drink toilet-cleaning lotion by eight of her seniors, who are all from Kerala, on May 9.

Hospital doc operate upon youth’s left leg instead of right NEW DELHI, JUN 22 (PTI): In an alleged case of medical negligence, doctors at a private hospital here have wrongly operated upon the left leg of a 24-year-old youth instead of the injured right leg. The Delhi Medical Council has taken suo motu cognisance of the matter and initiated an enquiry into it. Ravi Rai, a resident of Ashok Vihar, injured his right leg after he fell down from stairs on Sunday. He was rushed to Fortis Hospital, Shalimar Bagh and underwent tests including CT-scan and X-Ray following which the doctors said that Ravi has suffered a fracture and that his condition was serious. “Doctors told us that there was a fracture in the ankle of his right leg and that they need to do surgery to insert

pins in his ankle for support. “Trusting them we agreed for the surgery. But later, when our son gained consciousness, we realised that instead of the right leg, his left leg which was perfectly fine was operated,” said Ramkaran Rai, father of the patient. Meanwhile, the hospital issued a statement saying, “Patient safety is of paramount importance to us. We are deeply concerned and are looking into the matter and will take appropriate action as deemed necessary.” Ravi, a CA student, has been shifted to another hospital for further treatment. “We have also complained to the police. And we will also approach Medical Council of India (MCI) and Delhi Medical Association (DMA) for justice.

N Korea fires 2 suspected midrange missiles the Sea of Japan. It said in a statement that they didn’t pose a threat to North America. In April, North Korea attempted unsuccessfully to launch three suspected Musudan missiles, but all exploded in midair or crashed, according to South Korean defense officials. Earlier this month, North Korea had another suspected Musudan failure, South Korean officials said. Before April’s launches,

North Korea had never flighttested a Musudan missile, although one was displayed during a military parade in 2010 in Pyongyang, its capital. The launches appear to stem from Kim Jong Un’s order in March for more nuclear and ballistic missile tests. The order was an apparent response to springtime US-South Korean military drills, which North Korea views as an invasion rehearsal.

India seeks to purchase maritime patrol drones from US WASHINGTON, JUN 22 (PTI): India has sought from the US high-tech multi-mission Predator drones for protecting its maritime assets, especially in the Indian Ocean. India’s has conveyed its desire to purchase the drones in a letter of request (LoR) to the US last week, sources said. This is part of the Indian Government’s efforts to fast track its goal to secure the country’s maritime assets in particular in the Indian Ocean and detect untoward intrusion – like the one during Mumbai terrorist attack – on a real time basis. The LoR comes less than a fortnight after India was inducted into Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) and was recognised as a “Major Defence Partner” by the US after a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Barack Obama. Sources said the request has been made for state -of-theart multi mission maritime patrol Predator Guardian UAV’s from General Atomics. The Predator ‘Guardian’ platform, which provides high altitude wide area long endurance maritime intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capability, would help in protection and vigi-

lance of its maritime assets in the Indian Ocean and both its east and west coast. Flying at an altitude of 50,000 feet, these drones have the capacity to fly non-stop for more than 24 hours and monitor the movement of objects as small as a football on a real time basis, sources said requesting anonymity. It is understood that India had previously shown interest in purchasing these drones from the US, but the Obama Administration was unable to process these request as India was not a member of MTCR. Now that India has become a member of MTCR, the US – after it granted India the status of Major Defence Partner – has started looking into the proposal and is believed to be moving ahead to the next phase of letter of acceptance (LoA). “Early this month President Obama and Prime Minister Modi affirmed their support for US-India cooperation in promoting maritime security,” sources said. The issue of these drones were personally raised by the Prime Minister during his meeting with the President, to which he is understood to have given a favourable response, sources said requesting anonymity.

Xi, Modi to meet on sidelines of SCO summit in Tashkent BEIJING, JUN 22 (PTI): President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tashkent beginning tomorrow during which India is expected to seek China’s support for membership of the NSG. “We will release relevant information in due course,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said today. The spokesperson said the two leaders would be meeting on the sidelines of the SCO summit in the capital city of Uzbekistan. During his meeting with Xi, Modi is expected to seek China’s support for India’s bid for membership of the Nuclear Suppliers Group, which Beijing is keen on blocking. Hua, however, refuted perception that China is blocking India’s entry into the NSG. “With regard to India’s entry into NSG, I would like correct that the word China blocking India’s membership is not proper,” she said. “The word blocking is not proper. In the NSG agenda we have never seen the topic of non-NPT countries entry. So it does not make sense to say we block the entry,” she said.

WASHINGTON, JUN 22 (IANS): Americans’ views of presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump have drifted slightly more negative over the past month and a half, while his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton’s image remains steady, according to a Gallup poll. Trump’s net favourable rating slipped to -33 for midJune, from -28 in the first week of May, according to the poll released on Tuesday. At the same time, Americans’ view of Clinton has remained significantly less negative and more stable, with a current -13 net favourable rating, Xinhua cited the Gallup as saying. By this point in an election cycle, when each party’s nomination has been clinched, candidates typically have had a more positive image than has been the case for Clinton and Trump. Since 1992, Gallup has tracked a few presidential candidates with a negative net rating in June and July of an election year, Gallup found. The last month and a half has been an eventful period for both candidates. Trump for instance secured the number of delegates he needed to win the nomination. He also attracted a great deal of attention by questioning the impartiality of the federal judge who is hearing a case in which he was being sued by a former student of Trump University who claimed he did not get his money’s worth. KABUL, JUN 22 (IANS): At least 28 bus passengers abducted by Taliban militants were freed in southern Helmand province of Afghanistan, police said on Wednesday. “Following efforts by security forces and elders to secure the safe release of the abductees, a total of 23 kidnapped passengers were freed late on Tuesday and five were released earlier on Wednesday,” Xinhua news agency quoted the police as saying. In the early hours of Tuesday, Taliban militants intercepted three vehicles in Gereshk district of Helmand and detained the travellers. Helmand, notorious for poppy growing, is also a Taliban stronghold. The Taliban-led insurgency has been rampant since early April when the militant group launched its annual rebel offensive in different areas of the country. The Taliban urged civilians to stay away from official gatherings, military convoys and centres regarded as the legitimate targets by militants besides warning people not to support the government. The militants launched several kidnapping attacks recently to snatch off-duty security forces or government workers.

instead precisely a trouble maker. In the regard of the South China Sea issue, the US is playing an extremely destructive role,” it said. “China will continue to maintain strict supervision of the sea area conditions and will take appropriate measures should there be any incidences, and defend against the occurrence of situations that harm Chinese territorial sovereignty or security benefits,” it said. China will not let other countries have their way with their temper or to act arbitrarily regardless of the rules in the regard of South China Sea stability, it warned. China is locked up in a maritime dispute with Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan over the South China Sea. The resource-rich South China Sea is the main maritime link between the Pacific and Indian ocean, giving it enormous trade and military value. The sea connects East Asia with Europe and the Middle East and over USD 5 trillion in ship-borne trade passes through the sea annually. Beijing is concerned over US backing the smaller states to challenge China to assert their rights.

BEIJING, JUN 22 (PTI): Accusing the US of playing “extremely destructive role” by wading into the South China Sea dispute, a flagship Chinese daily Wednesday said Washington has “chosen a wrong opponent” to make forays into the region and Beijing will not let Washington “have its way”. “Conveying a so-called message about security through the exhibition of military might and furthermore describing the events as an act of deterrence is something that the US has done far too many times,” t h e r u l i n g C o m mu n i s t Party’s official mouthpiece ‘People’s Daily’ said in a commentary. “Regardless of how many times it may have gone smoothly in other parts of the world the US has chosen the wrong opponent by selecting China for this type of game. Behind all of this is lack of patience and brassy moves and it also reveals a nature of hegemony beneath the surface,” it said. “Statements from high ranking officials in the US military as well as the aircraft carrier drills themselves once again demonstrate that the US is definitely not a regional security safeguard, and

SEOUL/ WASHINGTON, JUN 22 (AP): In a remarkable show of persistence, North Korea on Wednesday fired two suspected powerful new Musudan midrange ballistic missiles, US and South Korean military officials said, its fifth and sixth such attempts since April. Five of those launches failed, many exploding in midair or crashing, and the sixth flew only about 400 kilometers (250 miles), South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said, an improvement but still well short of the missile’s potential 3,500-kilometer range and not long enough to be classified as intermediate. Despite the repeated failures, the North’s determination in testing the Musudan worries Washington and its allies, Tokyo and Seoul, because the missile’s range puts much of Asia and the Pacific, including US military bases there, within reach. Each new test apparently linked to a command from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un also likely provides valuable insights to the North’s scientists and military officials as they push toward their goal of a nuclear and missile programme that can threaten the US mainland. Pyongyang earlier this year conducted a nuclear test,

HARARE, JUN 22 (IANS): India overcame the last-minute blues to pip Zimbabwe by three runs in the third and final T20 International and pocket the series 2-1 at the Harare Sports Club here on Wednesday. India’s young bowling unit put on a collective effort to restrict the hosts to 135/8 after wicketkeeper-batsman Kedar Jadhav’s half century pushed the visitors to 138/6 in their stipulated 20 overs. Despite losing opener Chamu Chibhabha (5) cheaply, Zimbabwe got off to a positive start with Hamilton Masakadza (15) and Vusi Sibanda (28) putting on 40 runs for the second wicket to take Zimbabwe past the 50-run

mark in the eighth over. With the hosts in full flow, left-arm spinner Axar Patel managed to break the partnership by foxing Masakadza plumb in front while medium pacer Dhawal Kulkarni packed back Sibanda soon after. Sibanda blasted five fours in his 23-ball knock. Wicketkeeper-batsman Peter Moor (26) and Malcolm Waller (10) then tried to stabilise the innings with a 26run stand for the fourth wicket. Moor was at his attacking best during his 21-ball knock as he hammered leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal for three sixes before falling to the same bowler. Moor’s dismissal brought

Spain, winner of the last two European championships, will find their road to a third successive title much trickier after losing 2-1 to Croatia here on Tuesday, ceding first place in Group D to the Balkan side. Finishing second in the group means that La Roja will have to get past Group E winner Italy in the first match of the knockout stage to have any chance of repeating, EFE news agency reported.

I am looking forward to him meeting up with the rest of the squad so we can include him in our preparations.”

in for mer skipper Elton Chigumbura, who added 18 runs with Waller to bring up the 100 in the 17th over before Kulkarni dismissed Waller. With Zimbabwe needing 3 5 o f f 1 7 b a l l s, yo u n g Timycen Maruma (23) joined Chigumbura and the duo almost took the match away from the Indians with a 31-run seventh wicket stand before left-arm seamer Barinder Sran managed to restrict them. For the visitors, medium pacers Sran and Kulkarni took two wickets each while Patel and Chahal got one apiece. Earlier, Jadhav’s 42-ball 58 propelled India from a tricky situation after the visitors were sent in to bat. Under pressure after a batting collapse of sorts, the Maharashtra wicketkeeperbatsman resurrected the innings with a defiant knock. Fresh from a 10-wicket mauling of the hosts in the second match, India found themselves in a spot of bother after losing in-form opener Mandeep Singh (4) cheaply while Lokesh Rahul (22) and Manish Pandey departed off consecutive balls. Rahul’s 20-ball knock was laced with three fours and a six before the righthander was bowled by Neville Madziva to reduce India to 27/2 while Pandey joined him the next ball, thanks to a brilliant throw at the stumps from Elton Chigumbura. The failure of the top order provided ample opportunity to the middle order batsmen comprising Ambati Rayudu, skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Jadhav.

Argentina enters Copa America final

Argentina’s Gonzalo Higuain (9) celebrates his goal against the United States with Lionel Messi, left, and Ezequiel Lavezzi, center, during a Copa America Centenario soccer semifinal, Tuesday, June 21, 2016, in Houston. Argentina won 4-0. (AP/PTI) between Colombia and Chile in the third-place match on Saturday in Arizona. Wednesday’s match also saw Messi create history as he became the highest ever scorer for Argentina. He is now on 55 international goals, overhauling the previous record by former star striker Gabriel Batistuta. There was a worrying

moment for Argentina however, as Lavezzi fractured his arm after falling over the advertising boards while attempting to head the ball. The former Paris SaintGermain winger had to be stretchered off and has been ruled out of the final. The hosts were without three first-team regulars, with Jermaine Jones, Bobby

HOUSTON, JUN 22 (IANS): Argentina thrashed US 4-0 in the semi-finals of the Copa America Centanario football tournament at the Reliant Stadium here on Wednesday. Centre forward Gonzalo Higuain (50th, 86th minutes) struck twice while Ezequiel Lavezzi (3rd) and Lionel Messi (32nd) also found the target for the 14-time Copa America

champions. Higuain is now the highest scorer in the tournament with four goals in five matches. Argentina are gunning for their first major trophy since 1993 when they won their last Copa America title. They will meet Columbia or Chile in the final on Sunday. The US will now play the loser of the second semi-final

A video grab of Cristiano Ronaldo seen throwing reporter’s microphone in lake. LYON, JUN 22 (IANS): Ahead of the must-win clash against Hungary at the Euro 2016 football championship, Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo threw a reporter’s microphone into a lake when asked if he was prepared for the game while out for a walk with his team-mates. The reporter from Portuguese news channel CMTV asked the Real Madrid forward if he was ready for the tie. Ronaldo responded by

grabbing the microphone and throwing it into the lake, Sky Sports reported on Wednesday. Portugal are without a win at Euro 2016 and could face elimination if they do not beat Hungary in their third and last match in Group F. It has been a frustrating tournament for Ronaldo, who has failed to score from 20 shots. He criticised Iceland for having a “small-time mentality” after a 1-1 draw and then missed a penalty in the goal-

less stalemate with Austria. Portugal head coach Fernando Santos revealed the penalty miss had been playing on Ronaldo’s mind. “Cristiano hasn’t been able to sleep. On Sunday, I was one of the first up and he was already awake. He’s a winner and his experience will help him bounce back,” Santos said. “If there is a penalty in the next game, Cristiano Ronaldo will take it and he will score.”

BARCELONA/RIO DE JANEIRO, JUN 22 (IANS): Barcelona are not considering the sale of Brazilian forward Neymar this summer, despite the interest shown by some clubs in signing him, which would bring the Catalan football giants 190 million euros ($213.8 million), which is the buy-out clause in his contract. The vice president of economics at Barcelona, Susana Monje, stressed on Tuesday that the Catalan team does not intend to sell Neymar, while a club source has indicated to Efe that Barcelona are not willing to raise the Brazilian’s contract more than 15 million euros ($16.8 million) net per season. This is the offer they have for Neymar on the table and his father who has not yet responded, while in recent days the media have expressed doubts the player would accept that amount, reports Efe. The Barcelona source said that now is the time when Neymar “must step forward,” as he will never be paid more than Messi while Argentine remains a Barcelona player. Barcelona understand that a number of European clubs with large resources want to sign Neymar, but the club will not yield even a centimetre in negotiating the exit clause, which is set at 190 million euros.

Wood and Alejandro Bedoya suspended for the semi-finals. US coach Juergen Klinsman chose to replace the trio’s with Graham Zusi, Chris Wondolowski and Kyle Beckerman while DeAndre Yedlin was returned to the starting XI. Argentina also had one changed forced upon them as the suspended Nicolas Gaitan was replaced by Lavezzi in the starting XI. Fielding their usual 4-4-2 formation, the hosts were always expected to face an uphill battle. Lionel Messi, for long accused of being unable to reproduce his club form in national colours, seemed determined to shed the stigma with a magical performance. Argentina stamped their domination right at the beginning when an unmarked Lavezzi headed in an inchperfect lob from Messi. The Americans were left to rue some atrocious defending as none of their players picked up Lavezzi’s run from the edge of the penalty box. Messi doubled Argentina’s lead right after the half hour mark with a breathtaking left-footed freekick that curled in at the far corner. Higuain snatched his first goal early in the second half when a clever run into the box found him at the end of a cross from the left. The striker’s initial attempt was blocked by US goalkeeper Bradley Guzan, but Higuain jabbed in the rebound to incease Argentina’s lead. Messi created Argentina’s final goal when he picked up a loose ball in the midfield and outfoxed a couple of defenders before picking out an unmarked Higuain inside the penalty box.

‘Humiliated’ Anju Bobby George quits Kerala Sports Council; ‘Good’ says sports minister

T H I R U VA N A N THAPURAM, JUN 22 (IANS): Olympian Anju Bobby George, who has come under attack from Kerala Sports Minister E.P. Jayarajan and his party colleague, on Wednesday decided to step down as president of the Kerala Sports Council, and the minister immediately welcomed the move. “Good that she has resigned,” Jayarajan told reporters and added that no one asked her to step down. When it was pointed out that along with her the entire council has also resigned, he said: “Good, very happy to hear that also.” Senior Congress legislator and former Sports Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, who had appointed George, said this is the end result of a conspiracy by the state government. “This is a shame for sports loving Kerala as the council consisted of top flight international sports personalities. The state government should say why they are doing this,” Radhakrishnan said. State Congress President V.M. Sudheeran said George is a victim of the intolerance of the new government. “We appointed her looking only into her talent and it was not a political appointment as we wanted to take sports to a new level under accomplished sporting personalities,” he said. Former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said George never approached anyone seeking her post and this clearly shows the intolerant attitude of the Left government. But Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan attempted to

Anju Bobby George play down the issue. “If one council goes, another one will come in its place,” he said. The conflict began earlier this month after George got a dressing down from the minister when she went to meet him after he assumed office. The minister told her that a lot of corruption had taken place during her tenure. “I was appointed by the former Kerala state government around six months ago and things started to go wrong when we decided to appoint an ethics commission which was given the mandate to probe corruption, nepotism, harassment over the entire gambit of the council for the past decade,” George said after a meeting of the council here. “The sports lottery that was conducted during the Left government (2006-11) is the biggest misappropriation that has taken place in the history of sports in the state. The infrastructure development in sports that takes place under the council is totally corrupt. The truth has to come out,” said George, who added that her email was also hacked. She said being a revenue official and someone who has travelled widely, she was

surprised to see the files in the council, adding that the people of the state should know what is happening in the council. “Sports can be killed, but the morale of the sports personalities cannot be killed. The father figure of sports in Kerala is Colonel G.V. Raja and he had to leave the council in tears. We do not see it any more apt to continue in this post and hence, including me, and the council of 12 officials are stepping down,” George said. She also clarified that her brother Ajith Markose is an accomplished coach and unnecessary allegations were raised which said he was favoured by the council for his appointment. “Even the Athletic Federation of India has said that he is a qualified coach. And to put things in perspective, his appointment was not made by the council, but it was the previous state government that appointed him. However, in the wake of the allegations, he too has resigned from the post,” George added. George became the first Indian athlete ever to win a medal in a World Athletics Championships in Paris in 2003. The Arjuna awardee has represented the country in the Olympics, Commonwealth Games, Asian Games and World Championships from 2002 onwards. Leader of Opposition Ramesh Chennithala said it was most unfortunate that the new government is making things difficult for a world renowned athlete and forced her to step down, when they only thought that sports administration should be run by sports personalities and appointed her.

IOA requests AIBA for wildcard entry for Mary Kom

MC Mary Kom NEW DELHI, JUN 22 (PTI): In a last-ditch attempt to fetch MC Mary Kom a Rio Olympics berth, the Indian Olympic Association and the ad-hoc committee administering boxing in the country have officially sent a request for a wildcard entry to the celebrated boxer, who could not make the cut via qualifiers. “Mary Kom had sought our assistance in the matter and we have written to the International Boxing Association (AIBA) to request for a wildcard for her,” IOA President N Ramachandran told PTI. The ad-hoc committee, headed by Kishen Narsi, has also written to AIBA, seeking what is officially called a Tripartite Commission Invitation Place. There is only one such place on offer in the 51kg

category, in which Mary Kom competes. “...we appeal to you to kindly consider her case that’s extraordinary for a TRIPARTITE COMMISSION INVITATION,” the committee’s letter to AIBA stated. “...our humble request to AIBA is to consider her participation in Rio as a special case wherein a world class athlete who has 5 world titles in her bag and 16 years of illustrious career that can add value to Rio Olympics with her swansong appearance as well...,” the letter added. “She has been practising hard and certainly hopes that she would prove to be a force to reckon with and the prayers of billions across the country and her well wishers across the globe will propel her, maybe, to win another medal at Rio. This would add another illustrious story to Boxing history and help AIBA’s cause of making Boxing the most talked about sport as well.” Mary Kom could not book an Olympic ticket after losing in the second round of the World Championships last month. Mary Kom (51kg), who was a bronze-medallist at the 2012 London Olympics, lost 0-2 to Germany’s Azize Nimani in the second round of an event from where only the semifinalists would make the cut for the upcoming Rio Olympic Games.

Vijender alleges bias in Rio wild card snub

Vijender Singh has questioned the International Boxing Association (AIBA)-appointed ad-hoc committee’s decision to seek a Rio Olympics wild card entry only for MC Mary Kom, and not him, reports DNA. Arguing why such a favour can’t be accorded to the best male boxer in the country currently, the 2008 Beijing Games bronze medallist said no one in the committee including chairman Kishen Narsi was ready to listen to his case despite making several attempts to reach out. The three-time Olympian, who turned professional last year, is busy preparing for his WBO Asia Pacific title bout on July 16 against Kerry Hope in the Capital. Alleging bias by the committee, the former amateur World No. 1 felt that his plea should also be taken up with the AIBA as his stature is no less than the 2012 London Olympics bronze-medallist Mary Kom. “Why can’t there be a wild card entry for me? Why can’t the ad-hoc committee demand the same for me from the AIBA? They are making every effort to get a wild card for Mary Kom despite the fact that she has not qualified for Rio. But in my case, there is a clear bias because no one in India is

Vijender Singh serious about my Olympic participation,” Vijender said. “I should also be given a chance if the rules have been relaxed by the AIBA for pro boxers to compete at Rio. I am a three-time Olympian and have fought in Commonwealth Games, Asian Games as well as World Championships,” Vijender, who is currently in Manchester preparing for his fight against Hope, added. Vijender said the boxing administrators in India haven’t taken kindly to his decision of turning pro. “It seems that I am no longer competing for India. The officials believe that since I have turned pro, I shouldn’t have a chance of going to Rio. They feel they shouldn’t help me because I no longer represent India in amateur boxing. I am fighting my professional bouts under the tri-colour.
