DIMAPUR, JUN 29 (NPN): Issue of low bandwidth and poor internet connectivity in Nagaland would soon to be a word of past as BSNL is all set to operationalise 10G Guwahati-Dimapur Wireline system from the end of July, Bharat Bhushan Verma, DGM, NE Circle-II, BSNL, said on Wednesday. “With TDS’ 10G network, the “G” refers to capacity—10 gigabits per second (or 10 billion bits). This does not mean that every TDS customer has a 10G Internet pipe connected to their house though. TDS’ 10G network is the ‘backbone network’ that connects TDS markets to each other, to our data centres, and to the Internet. TDS’ 10G network enables services like TDS TV, managed IP Hosted, and high-speed residential and commercial Internet service,” Verma said while speaking to Nagaland Post. “You can’t compare wireless 3G/4G to TDS’ 10G network. For many, understand-
ing the differences between Internet networks can be confusing. There’s 3G, 4G, and at TDS, 10G,” Verma also said. Internet connectivity to Nagaland has been highly unstable, even after BSNL provides high speed net from Bangladesh-based Submarine Cable Company Limited (BSCCL) bandwidth from Cox Bazar in southeast Bangladesh from March 23. The main wire link that travels nearly 2,000 km through the ecologically sensitive zone to connect the landing station in Kolkata, remains inoperative for half of the year. Presently, BSNL is providing internet service to the region through Bangaluru-Guwahati wired line. The net is slow due to technical bottlenecks such as rusty or loose overhead copper wire connections. Net surfers in Nagaland have been living through a virtual nightmare. A surfer has to wait, fret and fume for the slow connectivity. Even if one is lucky to be connected to the web, the data flow is so slow that it’s enough to give
headaches. “Net connectivity in Nagaland is really pathetic. Not to talk of the rural areas but in Dimapur and Kohima do not even get 2G. We pay for 3G and 4G but we hardly get service of 2G,” said Pakinzinliu Chawang, a regular net user and lecturer in English of Tetso College here. BSNL is the largest net provider of the region. Considering slow connectivity and increasing number of subscribers of the region, BSNL is upgrading two wired routes Guwahati-Dimapur via Nagaon and Guwahati-Dimapur via Silchar. “By the end of July, all works will be completed. The internet connectivity in Nagaland will be as good as in metros such as Delhi and Mumbai with the improvement of the two routes. This will also result in faster speeds and improved services in Nagaland, Arunachal and Manipur,” Verma further said. “Once this facility is started, the entire internet service, be it landline, lease line or mobile network, we shall be

DIMAPUR, JUN 29 (NPN): Survival Nagaland (SN) has brought to light the practice of issuance of registration of birth certificates in Nagaland which had created huge controversy in Assam when birth certificates from Nagaland were the highest to have been produced during the National Register for Citizens (NRC). Most of those who produced registration of birth certificates from Dimapur allegedly were persons who were from Karimganj and Kokrajhar districts. According to a statement issued by SN, the Dimapur District Hospital issued a registration of birth certificate recently, for which it was not authorised to do so as per law. SN therefore asked under what Act has the hospital issued registration of birth certificate since it was not authorised? SN described the procedure for applying and obtaining registration of birth certificate which had to be done
through a legal process. Further SN said as per RTI of the Chief Medical Officer and DMC office, outlet of Economic and Statistic Department, both had issued a total of 35,468 Birth Certificates during the past five years. It expressed deep fear on whether some had been issued to illegal immigrants without adopting procedure and verification. In the light of rampant issuance of birth certificates that were liable for misuse, SN has demanded that the Economic and Statistics department make public the progress of NRC verification and also appealed to nortaries and lawyers not to entertain or endorse any affidavit from people whose antecedents were doubted. SN further warned that it would be compelled to knock on the doors of justice if any government official was found involved or any other engaged in the black market racket of providing birth certificates obtained at random.
able to give stable connectivity. The connectivity of existing wifi and wimax will also be stable,” he added. A present, BSNL has two kinds of net users-(i) wired and (ii) wireless. BSNL NE Circle –II provides net connection to 1.5 lakh wired users of Nagaland, 2.7 lakh of Arunachal and 2.7 lakh of Manipur. The number of wireless subscribers is 5,000 in Nagaland, 7,000 in Manipur and 7,700 in Manipur. “As regards to wireless users, the speed limit of internet goes down to ¼ after 50 per cent usage of the limit. However, the speed will be same for the users having unlimited space,” he said. “In view of increasing number of customers, BSNL is planning to build three wired routes to Nagaland, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh instead of one route operational at present,” he said. “Limited bandwidth and high demand for Internet services are to blame for slow net. But we usually overload the network as we allow more subscribers to log in,” Verma said.

disease first spread in Mizoram killing over 3,000 pigs in six districts. Mizoram has also stopped importing poultry, pigs and cattle from Myanmar and Bangladesh as well as other northeastern states due to the disease. “We have asked the district magistrates to take suitable steps in stopping import of chickens, birds, ducks, eggs, cattle and pigs from Bangladesh and neighbouring states of the northeast in view of the diseases among cattle and pigs,” the Mizoram official said. The state government has issued an order banning the sale of all domestic animals from villages within and outside the disease-affected districts in Mizoram. The government also asked the people not to sell or consume pork, cattle meat and poultry products in the diseaseaffected and adjoining areas. Mizoram shares an unfenced international border of 404 km with Myanmar and 318 km with Bangladesh, with immense scope for smuggling of animals, drugs, arms and ammunition and other things across the border.

Monsoon session from July 18; Govt confident of GST passage
NEW DELHI, JUN 29 (PTI): Government Wednesday asserted it has “enough” support for passage of the GST bill in the Monsoon session of Parliament that will commence from July 18 till August 12. After a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs chaired by Home Minister Rajnath Singh that recommended the schedule for the session, Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Venkaiah Naidu told reporters that the session could also be extended or curtailed by two-three days depending on requirement. The session will have 20 working days for now. Emphasizing that the GST bill is in the larger interest of the country, Naidu said, “We have a wider support and we have enough numbers for GST but we would like to have all parties on board because it will have an effect on states.” He said that the government wants to get the bill passed by consensus and is making efforts in that direction but asserted that even if consensus is not there, “we must get it approved in this session”. He said that voting on the bill will be the last option, suggesting that the government would like to avoid any trial of strength on this issue and will strive to take all parties along. However, since it is a Constitutional Amendment Bill, voting will have to take place. Replying to questions on whether Government will step up efforts to bring Congress on
M Venkaiah Naidu board, which has been opposing the bill on some conditions, he said Finance Minister Arun Jaitley is ready to hold further discussions with all parties including Congress. Naidu also referred to the recent interview of the Prime Minister in which he sought the cooperation of Opposition parties for passing GST. In the meeting, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj told Naidu that she was ready for a discussion on the recent foreign visits of the Prime Minister in view of issues like India’s membership to NSG, if members want it. Rajnath Singh, who chaired the meet, pushed for early passage of Lokpal and Lokayukta (Amendment)Bill while Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar said there was a need for an early passage of the Compensatory Afforestation Fund Bill. Both are pending in Parliament. Naidu said besides GST, the government will push for passage of three bills replac-
ing ordinances on Combined Entrance Exam for medical and dental colleges as well as the one seeking amendments to the Enemy Property Act. Naidu said while 56 bills are pending --11 in Lok Sabha and 45 in Rajya Sabha, he has also asked ministries to come up with at least 25 new bills. The ministries will have to give notice for bringing the new bills by July 3. Naidu said once Parliament passes GST, the Indian economy will grow further. “Keeping that in mind I appeal to all political parties to cooperate in passage of the bill. We have spent enough time. We have done enough study. There have been detailed discussions with state finance ministers... concerns have been addressed,” he said. Claiming that the government has been continuously engaging with all parties including Congress on the issue, the Parliamentary Affairs Minister said, “We will continue to have a dialogue with them also and try to convince them that House should be in order, which is a must to pass a constitutional amendment bill.” He said political parties, while formulating their stand, will keep the ground realities in mind. “That is my hope as Parliamentary Affairs Minister... I hope it should get approved in the next session of Parliament,” he said. The contentious Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-second Amendment) Bill, 2014, known as the GST Bill was moved in the Upper
House in August last year after being passed by Lok Sabha. The government is hopeful of the passage of the GST bill in this session amid indications that a number of regional parties have broken ranks with Congress on the issue and are willing to extend their support to this crucial economic reform measure. After the CCPA, Naidu also held a separate meeting with Union ministers during which he asked them to submit their bill proposals by July 3, a fortnight before the session begins. The session comes at a time when the ruling BJP’s morale is high after its maiden victory in Assam Assembly polls and its performance in Kerala and West Bengal elections. Another key bill is the Whistle Blowers Protection (Amendment) Bill, 2015, which was moved in December last year but the discussion on it had remained inconclusive. In the Budget session this year, this bill could not be taken up. In Lok Sabha, important bills pending include the Consumer Protection Bill 2015 and the Benami Transactions (Prohibition) Amendment Bill, 2015. The last few sessions of Parliament have seen sparrings between the government and the opposition even though the second part of the Budget session recorded a relative improvement as far the completion of government business was concerned.
Gujarat court refuses to ban a book mocking PM AHMEDABAD, JUN 29 (PTI): A court here has dismissed a suit seeking a ban on the sale of a Gujarati book in which author Jayesh Shah, a Congress leader, has allegedly mocked Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Civil court judge A M Dave cited Article 19 of the Constitution and dismissed the suit on Monday, holding that banning the book, titled “Fekuji Have Dilli Ma (Fekuji is in Delhi now)”, would violate the fundamental right of freedom of expression. The book dwells on a list of promises made by Modi during his campaign for 2014 Lok Sabha polls and claims that he has failed to deliver on them. The suit demanding ban on the book was filed by a social worker Narsinh Solanki, who contended that the book is meant to “defame” Modi. Solanki alleged that the contents and the title of the book are defamatory and derogatory in nature and they would spoil the image of the Prime Minister. According to Solanki, Modi came to power just two years back, a timeframe too short to fulfil all the promises he made during the poll campaign. Solanki sought the court’s intervention to put an immediate ban on the sale of the book, which is in the market since last few months. However, not convinced with the arguments of Solanki, the judge said that India is a democracy and people have all the right to express their personal views through a book.

NEW DELHI, JUN 29 (PTI): AAP MLA Dinesh Mohaniya, arrested in a case of alleged molestation, was Wednesday granted bail by a Delhi court which said no purpose would be served by keeping him in judicial custody as investigation was almost complete. Additional Sessions Judge Neelam Singh granted the relief to Mohaniya, an MLA from Sangam Vihar, whose earlier two pleas were dismissed by magisterial courts here. The court granted him bail on a personal bond of Rs 50,000 and a surety of the like amount and directed him not to tamper with prosecution evidence or hamper the investigation in any manner. “Perusal of record shows that the investigation is almost complete in the case. It is a fact that the appellant accused is a member of the Legislative Assembly and has his roots in the society. “Since the investigation is almost complete and the fact that accused is in judicial custody since June 25, therefore no purpose would be served by keeping him in judicial custody anymore. Therefore, I am inclined to release accused Dinesh Mohaniya on bail on furnishing a personal bond and a surety bond of Rs 50,000 with one local surety of the like amount,” the judge said. The judge further directed Mohaniya not to tamper with prosecution evidence or hamper the investigation in any manner and asked him to join the investigation as and when required. The court, while granting the relief to the MLA, took into consideration the arguments of his counsel senior advocate H S Phoolka that there was a violation of procedure and law by the police authorities.

Telangana stir: Judges on mass leave
HYDERABAD, JUN 29 (PTI): Around 200 judges from Telangana, who are on a mass leave in protest against suspension of 11 judicial officers amid ongoing stir over the provisional allocation of judicial officers from Andhra Pradesh to Telangana courts, Wednesday did not attend work. “Around 200 judges who had gone on mass leave yesterday did not attend courts protesting suspension of 11 judicial officers...the protest is going on,” a member of the Telangana Judges Association told PTI. The High Court of Judicature at Hyderabad has so far suspended 11 judicial officers on disciplinary grounds following the agitation against the provisional allocation of judicial officers. Protesting the action of High Court, about 200 judicial officers working in lower courts across the state had decided to go on “mass” leave for 15-days from yesterday. The suspension of 11 judges came close on the heels of over 100 judges under the banner of ‘Telangana Judges Association’ taking out a procession here on Sunday in protest against the allotment of judges who are natives of AP to the subordinate courts in Telangana. Meanwhile, agitating members of Telangana Advocates Joint Action Committee continued their protests outside court premises in different parts of the state today, raising slogans and holding demonstrations seeking withdrawal of the list of provisional allocation. “Police, who put up barricades on roads leading to High Court, took around 40 mem-
Telangana advocates holding placards at a protest in front of the High Court demanding separate High Court for Telangana, in Hyderabad on Tuesday. (PTI) bers of the JAC into preventive custody when they marched towards the High Court as part of ‘High Court Bandh’ call,” ACP (Charminar Division) K Ashok Chakrawarthy told PTI. Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao yesterday wrote to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh urging the Centre to expedite the process of division of the present high
court here, saying the provisional allocation of judicial officers has created a discontent among them and lawyers belonging to the state. He requested that appropriate notification to take up the exercise of allocating judicial officers and staff be issued only after the high courts of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh start functioning separately.

From war to peace
t was a journey of more than five decades that ended on June 28,2016 for Isak Chishi Swu, the unassuming , soft spoken and God-fearing veteran Naga nationalist leader. News of Swu’s death was greeted with deep sadness throughout Naga inhabited areas. It was not because every death brings sadness but it was a sadness for a man who earned the respect and admiration of people because he remained a deeply devoted nationalist with a humane touch. Late Isak was perhaps among the very few Nagas those days, to have passed BA with honours. T his would have given him tremendous advantage had he decided to join government service or even state politics. He would have surely risen to the highest civilian office or even political position, had he decided . However, late Isak chose to join the then NNC led by A.Z.Phizo in the late 50s and never looked back after that. He was among the few highly educated and promising young Naga nationalists those days and served under various capacities including the high post of vice president of NNC under A.Z.Phizo. In the NNC, Isak was also a contemporary of many other legendary Naga nationalist leaders and in being so, continued to pursue his cherished goals for the people till his death. For many who knew him personally, late Isak was a person who was easy to get along because he was affable. He was a praying leader and it would not be out of place to say, that Isak’s impact on the organisation with regard to the path of faith, is undoubted. Many may or may not know, but his deep conviction in the Bible and his personal lifestyle had inspired his colleagues and the rank and file. Those who spearheaded the Naga national movement had gone through many difficulties and sufferings have earned the highest honour and admiration of the people. Isak may have strongly believed in the Naga destiny under the will of God and in his last years, had understood the crucial importance of reconciliation that was needed to heal the wounds and bitterness. It was therefore understandable that the realisation that means and not military might was the only option and as desired by the Naga people for peace. The peace process had been on through over 60 rounds of talks between the government of India and the two –Isak and Muivah. The signing of the August 3,2015 Framework Agreement seeks bring a solution to the Naga political issue and Isak’s appeal for unity among all Naga Political Groups was towards a new journey from military stage to political stage. In his address on September 2015, Isak said - “Political negotiation replaced violent armed confrontation and with the official recognition of our unique history.” He also reminded that there would be no solution whatsoever, so long as Nagas were kept divided, ignoring their historical and political rights. The message of peace came from one who decided to become a messenger of peace from his earlier position as a crusader of war. Indeed, today Nagas need to seriously ponder over the fact that so many lives, much time and opportunities have been lost and it is time to bring peace so that each can move on with life with security and confidence.
DailyDevotion The Strictest Discipline If your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell. —Matthew 5:30 Jesus did not say that everyone must cut off his right hand, but that “if your right hand causes you to sin” in your walk with Him, then it is better to “cut it off.” There are many things that are perfectly legitimate, but if you are going to concentrate on God you cannot do them. Your right hand is one of the best things you have, but Jesus says that if it hinders you in following His precepts, then “cut it off.” The principle taught here is the strictest discipline or lesson that ever hit humankind. When God changes you through regeneration, giving you new life through spiritual rebirth, your life initially has the characteristic of being maimed. There are a hundred and one things that you dare not do— things that would be sin for you, and would be recognized as sin by those who really know you. But the unspiritual people around you will say, “What’s so wrong with doing that? How absurd you are!” There has never yet been a saint who has not lived a maimed life initially. Yet it is better to enter into life maimed but lovely in God’s sight than to appear lovely to man’s eyes but lame to God’s. At first, Jesus Christ through His Spirit has to restrain you from doing a great many things that may be perfectly right for everyone else but not right for you. Yet, see that you don’t use your restrictions to criticize someone else. The Christian life is a maimed life initially, but in Matthew 5:48 Jesus gave us the picture of a perfectly well-rounded life— “You shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.”

W
hen l was studying in a journalism school abroad, l was told by my professor that a news story should be like a skirt: long enough to cover the subject and short enough to be attractive. Over the years, the story has assumed the shape of pontification and inevitably padded. When senior journalists are kicking the bucket, the question that stares at us is what kind of journalism will be there in future. Of course this is not confined to India. All countries, whether in the West or the East – barring the totalitarian regimes – are asking the same question: which is the Lashman rekha that journalists should not cross? Or should there be any Lakshman rekha at all? Individuals are increasingly posing the question why journalists are prying into their private affairs. Journalists in turn defend themselves on the grounds that if they were not to probe, the skeletons would not come out of the closet. The government has a standard reply: some things cannot be disclosed in the public interest. In this way big even scandals are covered up.

Quality of journalism
I recall that when l wrote against the supersession of three Supreme Court judges, Hegde, Grover and Shalat, l was criticized by the then prime minister, Indira Gandhi, who argued that journalism did not mean preaching about the “commitment” of judges. She did not elaborate what that “commitment” was. I can understand the judges having commitment to the constitution, but not to a person however high he or she might be. What Mrs Indira Gandhi was demanding from the judges was a commitment to follow her way of thinking. That is the reason she appointed Justice Ray, a junior judge in the Supreme Court, as the Chief Justice, ignoring the seniority of three others. She did not show even the courtesy of informing them before hand. They heard the news on All India Radio. This kind of political manipulation runs contrary to the transparency that a democratic system cherishes. Indeed the structure of democracy stands on the pillars of both the division and limitation of power. For example, the army does not interfere in the

To my horror I saw in the white paper issued after the lifting of the Emergency that he had written to the then information minister, V.C. Shukla, explaining how he (Justice Iyer) was able to stall the effort by Kuldip Nayar to convene a meeting of the Press Council. The same question about the independence of journalists comes before us again and again in different situations. And I find that increasingly we the journalists are failing in the standards required from us. None of this has been helped by the new digital technology that promotes very short stories or sound bites. In fact things have deteriorated to such an extent today that news columns can be bought. It is an open secret that several stories are nothing more than paid news. Some leading newspapers feel no shame in selling the space to whoever wants to buy it. For them it is purely a question of revenue. How low have we sunk
from the heights that we once enjoyed? There was a time when we were able to bring before the public such scandals as the Mundhra insurance scam during the time of Finance Minister T.T. Krishnachari. Jawaharlal Nehru, then the prime minister, forced him to resign from the cabinet. But even when I subsequently met TTK, he did not seem to realize the harm he had done to the polity. India is oblivious to the privations of individuals. In contrast the UK media has in the past been prepared to take up the cudgels on behalf of innocent victims from different walks of life. For example, the Sunday Times, for which I was a stringer, is still remembered with affection and gratitude for the work it did on behalf of those parents whose children were born handicapped because of the Thalidomide drug prescribed to the patient. Public pressure eventually forced the drug manufacturing company to pay out the needed compensation. Can we emulate those examples today when our very integrity as journalists is being questioned, not to speak of the high standards we once followed?

Clarification on wrong impression created
T
he Zeliang People’s Organisation, Nagaland is compelled to clarify the wrong impression created by Kiezen Zeliang in regards to the qualification case of T. R. Zeliang through some local print media circulated on June 23 wherein he stated that ‘the whole Zeliang community stand behind him ...for those few Zeliang individuals who are being blinded by other tribes to betray his own community, a day will come when the whole Zeliang will judge you for going against your own brother.’ Everyone knows that the issue of T.R. Zeliang’s qualification is subjudiced and for which all sensible people including the Zeliang People’s Organisation Nagaland has been silent on the matter. However, Kiezen Zeliang under the aegis of the organisation he claims to head, which was also created by T. R. Zeliang with his handpicked individuals on June 21, 2013 against the wish of the native Zeliang people to oppose the existing Zeliang People’s Organisation Nagaland amusingly acted as though to come to the rescue of his political master by his press statement. But this time around it is proved an absolutely wrong endeavour. Contrary to what Keizen Zeliang would be fond of dreaming in his mid-summer night’s dream of 2016 to brace his imagina-
N
tion, not a single sensible Zeliang will think to support a wrong cause let alone the whole community. This is an incredibly ideal opportunity to further clarify, assuming the naive thinking of Kiezen Zeliang’s misconception unless whatever he expressed, as apparent were not of his unshackled opinion when he stated, ‘some political opportunists from the advance tribes are trying to bring down the present Government by making a ‘big’ issue out of a non-issue.’ Divergently, it is far convincing that no rational individual will deviate from the truth to support one that lied to his people and in this context; all Naga tribes are popularly known for our integrity and abhorrence of deception. The Zeliang People’s Organisation Nagaland rather fully supports the concern and effort of the complainant(s) in the matter of T. R. Zeliang’s qualification case if the truth can be, judiciously and without any hindrance unearthed. No individual of any position or political leadership is above the law of the land nor has the right to instigate the community with expectation of supporting a wrong cause and God forbid such nefarious designs last any next moment longer. The signatories through this press release would like to refutes with the following statement1. That Shri H.Wanme claimed that the four villages (Jakphang, Angjangyang, Changlang and Angphang) were scattered till 2014. It asserted that since from the time Angjangyang gained SDO (Civil) the demarcartion of Angjangyang jurisdiction includes the above mentioned four villages with EAC Longching HQ as its administrative circle. Representation by ACAUT Nagaland T on fuel adulteration expose
W
e take pleasure in submitting the following points for your kind implementation in the interest of justice and good governance. The ACAUT understands that investigation into the fuel adulteration racket, as carried out by the ACAUT along with the police and district administration on 27th June, 2016, at 6 places in Dimapur and Chumoukedima, is wrought with obstacles and the police/district administration will be compelled by higher ups in the government to take liberty with free and fair investigation. However, we are inclined to believe that the district administration and the police are more than capable of withstanding such pressures. The ACAUT urges your kind authority to consider the following points in order to reassure the common citizens: 1. That all the kingpins of the fuel adulteration racket be immediately arrested within 7 days from the day the raid was carried out. The Kingpins have been identified as Dinanath, Srikanth, Umesh, Navel, Romeo, Ajay and Lalmohan. The list of names is not exclusive. The assets and properties of these individuals must be sealed till the investigation is complete as in all likelihood these were procured through illegal means and upon establishing the guilt of the accused persons the assets must be proportionally auctioned off. 2. This racket being an inter-state operation, complicity of high officials, including politicians should be thoroughly probed without fear or favour. The names of all the kickback beneficiaries should be made public. 3. Some of the kingpins are known to be running several fuel stations in various districts, including Dimapur.
The ACAUT demands that the names of all these fuel stations be revealed, sealed and then publicly auctioned off. 4. The landlords being culpable in this adulteration racket seems highly plausible, therefore, apart from being prosecuted under relevant sections of the law, the district administration should seize the propertiesfrom where the adulteration was being carried out and the property auctioned off once culpability is established. The landlord of Nagami filling station, Chumukedima is one DirengLungalang; landlord of the premises at 5th Mile, Model Village, is one Nongtok Jamir; landlord of the premises at Old Tata Parking is one Yeshi Ao. As for the landlord of those 3 fuel adulteration premises at Ghorapatti, the ACAUT has no information. 5. The complicity of the Food & Civil Supplies Department in this racket is beyond doubt. In all the raided premises, massive quantity of SK oil was found which indicates that SK Oil is being diverted to the black market for fuel adulteration purpose. Therefore, this angle should be thoroughly probed and the result made public within one week. a) 19 tankers of various make with minimum 12,000 L capacities fully loaded with SK Oil ( Bluecolour) were found inside the 6 premises. The minimum total of SK Oil calculable from these tankers is 228,000 litres. b) Tens of containers2000L and 1000L plastic tanks, above 5000 L iron containers, drums, and 12,000 L tankswere discovered filled with SK Oil amounting to not less than 150,000 litres. If we calculate the approximate value of the seized
SK oil in the open market @the rate of Rs. 50 per litre, it comes to around Rs. 2 Crores. 6. The ACAUT demands that the seized SK Oil should be distributed to the beneficiaries in all the districts. 7. The seized items, including the 19 fuel tankers should be auctioned off. 8. The seriousness of the fuel racket is borne by the fact that household paints (Asian Paint brand) and industrial paints (Zero solvent) are used to adulterate the fuel along with SK Oil. 9. The ACAUT has so far filed FIRs in West PS and Diphupar PS. At this crucial juncture, your office is strongly urged to withstand all sorts of pressures and carry out the investigation to its fullest and thereby reassure the hapless citizens that the law is paramount. Yours Sincerely, 1. Dr. Khekugha Muru, Co-Chairman, ACAUT Nagaland, 2. K. Tiatemsu, Member, ACAUT Nagaland Additional Points: 1 . T h e AC AU T h a s lodged FIR against the Food &Civil Supplies department as well. 2. As per public demand, the EAC sealed the premises of Nagami petrol pump, Chumoukedima on 27th June itself. 3. As responsible citizens, the youths in the districts are urged to visit the fuel outlets/ petrol pumps and conduct fuel density test to find out whether the consumers are getting good quality fuel. The assistance of the local Weights & Measures department can be enlisted for this purpose. Media Cell, ACAUT Nagaland
stage, will further be remain under Tobu ADC HQ. 2. The Mopong EAC HQ was upgraded in the year 1983 from C.O. post and hence it is one of the oldest EAC HQ in the district. Whereas Angjangyang was established in the year 1995 as model village and upgraded SDO (Civil) by shifting the Longching EAC HQ. Now with the retention of Longching EAC HQ and subsequent reversed of administration circle under Aboi ADC HQ, the model village turned into SDO (Civil) Angjangyang left with only four villages under its jurisdiction. And therefore, the statement of H. Wanme Konyak “appreciating the Zeliang Govt. for bringing 48th Moka A/C under one administration centre” after a lapsed of nearly two years is a laughing stock because the public of Mopong circle with a majority of 8 villages are not deserving the decision of the Govt. as it was done without any consultation with the public of Mopong Hongkong (Mopong Circle). 3. Attacking personally to Former Vice-Chairman ATC
Mopong by vice chairman ATC Angjangyang is out of purview since the previous press statement issued by VCC Mopong circle dated Nagaland Post, the 29th May 2016 proclaimed the issue as voice of the mass and therefore there is no option to deceive the law of the land. With firm determination, the public of Mopong Hongkong reaffirmed its stand citing with clear information to the people of Angjangyang in particular and Nagas in general that Mopong EAC HQ be remain under ADC Tobu HQ. Mongkhah, Chairman, Ukha Village Council; Ethang, Chairman, Yakshu Village Council; L Tangang, Chairman, Kenchenshu Village Council; Pongjei, Chairman, Y/Changnyu Village Council; M Engo, Chairman, Yonghong Village Council; K Nyaoba, Chairman, Yei Village Council; W Shamlao, ViceChairman, ATC Mopong; Meila, President, MHGBU; A Yangkon, Former ViceChairman, ATC Mopong
Strike while the iron is hot
his is an old proverb which may be very relevant to various groups who claim themselves to be fighting for the cause of the Nagas for years. A blacksmith can easily bent and shape the iron according to his wish while it is red- hot but when it cool down it loses all the leverage to give it a shape. ULFA (United Liberation Front of Asom) and LTTE (The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) were once the most feared terrorist groups or freedom fighters, it depends on whose side you are. Both in its peak of power reign terrors in the heart of the people and pose a constant threat to the security forces, above all they enjoyed the support of the public. But with the passage of time it lost the support of the people which to some extend ended the voluntary contribution by the public which in turn led to the menace of extortions and with the security forces tightening its screws on their activities with greater international co-operation it lead to the decline in their fortune and at present the once most powerful group LTTE is being completely decimated and the ULFA is struggling for its own existence forget about fighting for the cause of the people. Both these groups had an
opportunity to strike a better deal with their respected government but at present it’s not even in a position to dictate the terms of any political solution. The fate of these groups should be an eye opener for all those groups who are fighting for the cause of the Nagas and dragging it for years. Most of the groups strengths are shrinking with the passage of time and most importantly these groups are losing the support of the public which can be seen by open defiance against the multiple tax collections from various quarters of the society and sadly at present its not Nagas against others but we are fighting among ourselves shedding blood, threatening and harassing fellow Nagas. Therefore all those groups who are fighting for the cause of the Nagas for years should be practical about their struggle and strike the iron when it is hot otherwise there will come a time when we will not be in a position to dictate the terms for our Naga political solution but will have to swallow the terms set and dictated by others. Moameren Pongen, Asst Prof, Chumukedima.

Letter to commissioner & secretary school education Sir,
Satakha Range Students’ Union (SRSU) would like to seek your attention through this press release, wherein Satakha being one of the oldest and largest sub-division under Zunheboto district, yet, has sole government higher secondary school for students numbering 100 plus in higher secondary section alone and which is a great relief for students and parents at Satakha and surrounding villages who could not afford to go other places to pursue their studies. Inspite of good response of students to study here due to various reasons, the school has been functioning without subject teachers of education, english and environmental science since it’s up gradation and this matter has been brought to your notice personally and also through local dailies dated 7-5-2015 without any outcome/response so far. The school has also produced good results as compared to other government schools with adequate teachers conducted by NBSE, still the government and your concern authority has been blind and deaf in noticing the problems which is a basic necessity of all schools and for this the innocent students are victimized due to the negligence of the concern authority . For which we would like to make a fervent appeal to you and your esteemed authority to kindly look in this matter seriously and provide the required subject teachers at the earliest, failing which may compel us to take the matter in our hands in the form of democratic processions and agitation. Khetoli Jimo president and general secretary, Kenneth H SRSU

MUMBAI, JUN 29 (PTI): Shaking off Brexit jitters, market today rallied nearly 216 points on the back of a string of government measures aimed at reviving the economy and talk that the GST Bill may be passed in the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament. Auto and retail stocks were the big movers after the government approved implementation of the 7th Pay Commission for its employees and pensioners, which had recommended an overall hike of 23.5 per cent. There was more upside in store after the government today asserted that it has “enough” numbers on its side for passage of the GST Bill in the monsoon session, which commences on July 18. The Sensex stayed in the positive terrain throughout and closed up 215.84 points, or 0.81 per cent, at 26,740.39. The 50-share NSE Nifty took back the crucial 8,200 level and ended the day at 8,204.00, a gain of 76.15 points, or 0.94 per cent -- its biggest single-session jump since June 15. From the 30-share Sensex pack, 24 scrips ended higher and one remained unchanged. Short-covering too helped as buying gathered pace after a firming trend in Asia, in line with overnight gains in the US,

MUMBAI, JUN 29 (PTI): The rupee Wednesday gained 27 paise to close at 67.68 against the US currency on dollar selling by banks and exporters amid firm stock markets. The US dollar was weak against the major world currencies in overseas markets which also strengthened the rupee sentiment, dealers said. The rupee opened higher 67.78 per dollar against previous closing level of 67.95 per dollar at the Inter-bank Foreign Exchange (Forex) and hovered in a range of 67.6050 per dollar and 67.85 per dollar in day trade. It finally settled at 67.68 per dollar, showing a gain of 27 paise or 0.40 per cent. The dollar index was trading down 0.25 per cent against a basket of six currencies in the late afternoon trade. The RBI fixed the reference rate for the dollar at 67.7443 and for the euro at 75.0200. In cross-currency trades, the rupee dropped further against the pound sterling to finish at 90.90 from 90.76 yesterday and but recovered against the euro to settle at 74.96 from 75.32. It will help in generating additional employment as shops and establishments will have freedom to operate for longer hours, thereby requiring more manpower. It also provides exemption to highly-skilled workers like those in IT and bio-technology from daily working hours (9 hours) and weekly working hours (48 hours), subject to maximum 125 overtime hours in a quarter. The law is designed to bring in uniformity in legislative provisions, making it easier for all the states to adopt it and ensure uniform working conditions across the country.

In a meeting held this morning, the Union Cabinet approved Model Shops and Establishment (Regulation of Employment and Condition of Services) Bill 2016. The law, which covers shops and establishments employing 10 or more workers except manufacturing units, will not require Parliament’s approval. Jaitley said that “Since it is a model bill on a state subject, it will be sent to the states,” adding, the bill also prescribed for compulsory holidays and provides for a provision for permitting women to work in night (shifts). “The employment generation was less as there was protective discrimination. NEW DELHI, JUN 29 (PTI): A model law that allows shops, malls and cinema halls among other establishments to run 24x7 throughout the year got the Cabinet approval on Wednesday afternoon oday -- a move aimed at boosting job creation and consumption-led growth. The law also provides for women to be employed on night shifts with adequate security and calls for better working conditions for employees such as drinking water, canteen, first aid, lavatory and creche. “The main aim of this bill is to increase employment generation. 41 dead in Istanbul attack Turkish PM says first signs in Istanbul attack point to IS
bodies lie on the pavement outside Istanbul’s international airport after explosions and gunfire shook the terminal. ISTANBUL, JUN 29 (AP): Suicide attackers armed with guns and bombs killed 41 people and wounded scores of others at Istanbul’s busy Ataturk Airport in an attack the government blamed on Islamic State extremists. Funerals were expected Wednesday for some of the victims - who included at least 23 Turkish citizens and 13 foreign nationals - as Turkish authorities tried to piece together how the attack happened. A Turkish official said authorities are going through surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses to establish a preliminary timeline and details. The death toll excluded the three bombers, who arrived in a taxi last night and eventually blew themselves up after coming under fire, according to
the government, though there were conflicting reports about exactly where they detonated their explosives. Earlier, the same official had said none of the attackers got past security checks at the entrance, with two detonating explosives at the international arrivals terminal and the third in the parking lot. The official spoke on condition of anonymity in line with government protocol. But the HaberTurk newspaper reported that one attacker blew himself up outside the terminal, and two others opened fire near the X-ray machines. The report said an attacker was shot at while running amid fleeing passengers, then blew himself up at the exit. The third attacker, who went up one level to the international departures terminal, was shot by police
and detonated his explosives, according to the report. Air por t sur veillance video posted on social media appeared to show the moment of one explosion, a huge ball of fire, and passengers fleeing. Another appeared to show an attacker, felled by a gunshot from a security officer, blowing himself up seconds later.
9 EU leaves Britain out in Sikh WWII veteran India avoiding talks with the cold as PM race begins dies in Canada Pak due to Kashmir: Aziz international
BRUSSELS, JUN 29 (AFP): European leaders met Wednesdauy without Britain for the first time in 40 years to prepare for life after the Brexit bombshell, as the race to succeed Prime Minister David Cameron began. Highlighting the seismic shock from last week’s referendum, one person who was in Brussels however was Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, “utterly determined” to see Scotland remain in the EU. Britain “made the decision that it did. And this morning it looks like they aren’t sitting at the table any more,” European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said as he arrived Wednesday. At a summit described as “sad” yesterday, Cameron won some breathing space from the remaining 27 leaders of the bloc five days after Britain rocked financial markets by voting 52 to 48 percent to leave the bloc. EU President Donald Tusk said he understood that time was needed “for the dust to settle” before the next steps can be taken. H o w e v e r, J u n c k e r warned Britain did not have “months to meditate” before
triggering Article 50 -- the EU treaty clause that begins the two-year withdrawal process -- after Cameron’s successor takes office in early September. And German Chancellor Angela Merkel warned that London could not “cherrypick” the terms of the exit negotiations. Some in Brussels are concerned that giving Britain favourable divorce terms will spark a domino effect of others leaving the union, set up six decades ago to foster peace on the continent after World War II. “We need more than ever a united Europe, in contrast to a disunited UK,” Luxembourg’s Prime Minister Xavier Bettel said Wednesday. Cameron flew back to London after yesterday’s summit, as Sturgeon headed in the opposite direction to test the waters in Brussels for her country joining the bloc as a separate entity. Scotland overwhelmingly backed “Remain” in last Thursday’s vote, and the combative Sturgeon has said she was “utterly determined to preserve Scotland’s relationship and place within the EU”.
TORONTO, JUN 29 (PTI): Pritam Singh Jauhal, a 95year-old World War II veteran and a prominent figure in the Sikh-Canadian community who fought and won a high profile battle to allow Sikhs wearing turbans into the Royal Canadian Legions, has died. Lt-Col Pritam Singh Jauhal passed away peacefully in Surrey on Sunday, his daughter was quoted as saying by The Globe and Mail newspaper. Jauhal spent 38 years in the Indian Army and Central Reserve Police Force, retiring with the rank of lieutenantcolonel before immigrating to Canada to be with his children in 1980. He shot to prominence in 1993 when he was prohibited from entering the Newton Legion on Remembrance Day. At the time, the establishment would not allow turbaned Sikh veterans on the premises. Legion officials insisted that Jauhal and other Sikh veterans who had served the British Empire in the Second World War could only come in after removing their turban as rules forbade veterans from wearing headgear. This was despite the fact that female veterans from England were allowed to go in wearing their berets.
ISLAMABAD, JUN 29 (PTI): India was “shying away” from peace talks with Pakistan to avoid discussions on Kashmir and other issues, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif ’s Adviser on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz said Wednesday. He said Pakistan was not shying away from talks. “It is actually India which is shying away as it knows that it has to discuss Kashmir and other issues on the dialogue table,” Aziz said, commenting on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remarks during a television interview. “Prime Minister Modi’s logic is beyond perception,” he said. “We have a format of comprehensive and composite dialogue with India that includes issues like
people-to-people contact, visa and fishermen issue, trade and economic cooperation, Kashmir, Siachen and Sir Creek,” Aziz was quoted as saying by Radio Pakistan. He said that the Indian army had stakes in Siachen and when last time both the gover nments reached an agreement, the Indian army rejected it. In the interview on Monday, Modi had said that due to his diplomatic efforts, the world had seen India was not reluctant to engage with Pakistan. “Our approach has created difficulties for Pakistan, and they find it hard to respond on the matter in the international community,” said Modi.

My hero has fallen; the tallest tree has withered; Vociferous with a dignified calm, Ye stood for a cause that was so dear; Patriotism never ceasing, you were its embodiment; A true son of the soil, the soil mourns for its most beloved son; The best there was, the best there is, the best there ever will be; A will-spring of courage you were, During those tumultuous days of yore, A heart so filled with a sense of justice; You rebelled against incursion with valour unparallel; A sweet crusader, so adorable, You were "the moon amongst the lesser stars"; May your passing give birth to a cluster of patriots like you; You may be gone, we will excruciatingly miss you, But your legacy lives on to guide us like a polestar, Until the tree ye planted bear its fruits. Rest in peace, oh Asu Isac !

Salman not sorry for ‘raped woman’ remark, says he didn’t trivialise rape
S
alman Khan has responded to the NCW’s (National Commission for Women) notice to the actor on his ‘raped woman’ comment, which is a full-blown controversy now. NCW chairperson Lalitha Kumaramangalam said that the commission has received Salman’s reply to their notice and that their legal team is yet to read the response. A copy of Salman’s response to the NCW, accessed by India Today, reads that the actor didn’t trivialise rape and that he has the greatest respect for women. However, nowhere in the three-page reply is there any apology from the actor. The NCW had written a letter to Salman after he said in an interview that his gruelling workout for the film Sultan left him feeling like a ‘raped woman’. Two days ago, Kumaramangalam told the media, “We had written a letter to him last week asking why he made such a remark but he has not replied so far. We have taken his remarks very seriously and will issue summons to him immediately as he has failed to reply to the letter in which we had asked him to apologise within seven days.”
Sources today have pointed out that in his response to the NCW notice, Salman Khan hasn’t apologised for his remark. It all began when Salman Khan was quoted by a website as saying that the shooting for his upcoming film, Ali Abbas Zafar’s Sultan, left him feeling like a ‘raped woman’. “While shooting, during those six hours, there’d be so much of lifting and thrusting on the ground involved. That was tough for me because if I was lifting, I’d have to lift the same 120-kilo guy 10 times for 10 different angles. And likewise, get thrown that many times on the ground. This act is not repeated that many times in the real fights in the ring. When I used to walk out of the ring, after

the shoot, I used to feel like a raped woman. I couldn’t walk straight,” Salman told Spotboye.com. While Salman’s father Salim Khan apologised on behalf of the actor right after social media erupted, and brother Arbaaz Khan pointed out that Salman’s intentions weren’t wrong, an apology from Salman is still awaited. At the recently-held International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards, Salman broke his silence on the matter. The inauguration of the three-day film extravaganza saw Khan joking about saying anything at all.

The band, who headlined Glastonbury over the weekend, performed at gig in support of the Royal’s Lesotho charity on Tuesday. Harry and Chris put on a chummy display as they shook hands and hugged during the Brit band’s set. That wasn’t enough for the 31-year-old prince however, who later joined in with the band’s performance. Before he gave his all on stage, Harry told the crowd: “Thank you for standing out in the rain, thank you to the choir that has come all the way from Lesotho.” “And thank you to Coldplay - thank you so much, you’ve rocked the palace, you’ve rocked the palace,” he added. The hunky royal then stuck around and joined in with Chris and the children’s choir for a rousing performance of Up & Up. As the

Ed, 24, reveals: “She was going through financial troubles about a year ago. “She drove to my house – my album was nearly done – and she asked if I could put a song from when I was 17 on the deluxe album, so she could get a little bit of money and pay the mortgage

The first do-or-die raid for both teams came in the 11th minute of the first half but they couldn’t make it count. Vinoth Kumar for Titans scored four raid points whereas for Panthers raider Jasvir Singh had five empty raids. In the final minute of the first half, Panthers forced the first super tackle of the game to tie the game 12-12. Jasvir opened his account and scored two points with his sixth raid in the third minute of the second half. With 13 minutes to go, the home team held a slender lead 16-15 and their defence was holding strong as star raider Shabeer Bapu struggled to get points. Rajesh Narwal first scored two points and then helped Panthers inflict first all out in the 12th minute of the second half as they led 24-17. Sukesh Hegde came on as a substitute for Titans with less than four minutes left on the clock but failed to inspire his team. The Titans scored five points in the last five minutes as the Panthers sat back to defend their lead. Jasvir Singh scored with a scorpion kick in the dying seconds to give Panthers a welcome victory.

M O N T E V I D E O (URUGUAY), JUN 29 (IANS): Uruguay striker Luis Suarez believes that Argentina star and his Barcelona team-mate Lionel Messi will reverse his decision to quit international football. Messi called time on his international career in the immediate aftermath of Argentina’s defeat to Chile in the Copa America Centenario final. It was the third time in three successive years that Messi and Argentina failed to grab a major trophy, losing to Germany in the 2014 FIFA World Cup followed by Chile in the Copa America final last year. The Barcelona star was left in tears having missed his penalty in the shootout, but several high-profile figures in Argentina, including the nation’s president Mauricio Macri and Diego Maradona, have urged the 29-year-old not to go through with his decision. “I’m sure that he will change his mind, but whatever he decides he will still be the best ever. Knowing Leo, I’m sure it was said in a moment of sadness and helplessness,” Suarez was quoted as saying by Radio Tenfield of Uruguay on Tuesday.
The Germans, four times World Cup winners like the Italians, have also met Italy on four occasions in group stages of tournaments, drawing every time and failing to record a single win over them.

Federer ends Willis’ Wimbledon dream
Agnieszka Radwanska LONDON, JUN 29 (AGENCIES): With rain delaying play on the outside courts on day three of Wimbledon, Agnieszka Radwanska wasted no time in taking care of business under the roof on Centre Court. The third-seeded Pole, who reached the final here in 2012, overwhelmed Kateryna Kozlova 6-2, 6-1 in just over an hour Wednesday to move into the second round at the All England Club. Radwanska used her clever all-court game to thoroughly dominate the 97thranked Ukrainian, who was making her main draw debut at Wimbledon and has never won a Grand Slam match. Radwanska won the first four games and was always in control. “A one-hour match is always good, especially with that weather,” Radwanska said. “Now we’re playing every day, so I’m just very happy with that win and ready for the next one.”
The match was played in its entirety under the retractable roof, which was closed after steady rain lashed the grounds and forced delays on all other courts. “It’s like an indoor tournament, sometimes,” Radwanska said. “Have to kind of get used to that. Of course, it’s a little bit different without the sun, without the wind. So it’s a different game. But, well, it’s good that we could play today.” Radwanska lost to Serena Williams in three sets in the 2012 final. The two are in the same half of the draw this year and could meet in the semifinals. “(I’m) trying every year to do better and better, of course,” Radwanska said. “I was close a couple times. So it’s another year to try. And hopefully I can do one step (further).” Before play was stopped by rain on the outside courts, three players managed to finish matches that had been suspend-

Djokovic sweeps past Mannarino Novak Djokovic overcame a late hiccup to extend his Grand Slam winning streak on Wednesday, sailing to a 6-4, 6-3, 7-6(5) win over Adrian Mannarino under a closed roof on Centre Court at Wimbledon. The three-time Wimbledon champion (2011, ‘14, ‘15) next will face Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci or 28th seed Sam Querrey. The Serb now solely owns third place on the list for most consecutive Grand Slam victories, behind Rod Laver and Don Budge, both of whom won the calen-

Correspondent IMPHAL, JUN 29: Around 700 sportspersons of Manipur took part in the “Olympic Day Run”, which was flagged off by Olympian MC Mary Kom, who is also a Member of Parliament (MP), on Wednesday from the main stadium of Khuman Lampak, here. The event was organized by the Manipur Olympic Association (MOA) in association with the state department of youth affairs and sports. Sportspersons including high ranking officers took part in the run which covered 2km
along Dingku Road- Khongnang Ani Karak- North AOCMMTA-Khuman Lampak. MOA general secretary Sunil Elangbam said, “Olympic Day is an annual celebration that commemorates the formal establishment of the International Olympic Committee on June 23, 1894. It was officially created in 1948 as a sort of birthday of the Olympic Movement”. The event was held today after it was compelled to postpone due to general strike on June 23, he added. He stated, “In 1987, in an effort to encourage all
NOCs to commemorate and celebrate Olympic Day, the IOC Sport for All Commission launched the Olympic Day Run concept with the objective of promoting the practice of participation in sport by men, women and children from all corners of the world and all walks of life, regardless of athletic ability. The first Olympic Day Run was held in 1987, over a distance of 10km, with 45 participating National Olympic Committees”. He extended best wishes to all participants from Manipur in the forthcoming Rio Olympic 2016.
dar year Grand Slam. Djokovic is looking to clinch the third leg of the calendar Grand Slam this fortnight, having won the Australian Open and Roland Garros earlier this season. The streaks were in his favor before his second-round contest. It had been eight years since he had lost at a Grand Slam to a player ranked as low as Mannarino, No. 55 in the Emirates ATP Rankings (No. 75 Marat Safin, 2008 Wimbledon). The left-handed Frenchman entered the match 1-16 against Top 10 opponents. But Mannarino hung early with the World No. 1, slapping deep and flat groundstrokes to hold serve. Serving at 30/40 4-5, though, Mannarino netted a backhand to give the Serb the first set. From there, Djokovic mixed more slice into his usual topspin offering, which helped him earn a break in the second and third sets.
World T20 main draw set to expand to ‘Super 12’ EDINBURGH, JUN 29 (IANS): The International Cricket Council (ICC) is most likely to add two more teams to the main draw of the reinstated World Twenty20 in 2018. Discussions at the associates meeting of the ongoing ICC annual conference in Edinburgh also indicated that representatives of the associate nations on the ICC board may get full voting rights as well. “What I have heard described is that two teams will go through from each first group to create a Super 12,” Tim Cutler, the Hong Kong Cricket Association chief executive, was quoted as saying by espncricinfo. “That seems to be the agreed format at the moment. Hopefully that means with two more going through, potentially two more could come into the qualifiers to make 18 but the sound of it at the moment is it’s going to be 16 into 12. It’s a move in the right direction.” In better news for the associates, there is a motion to give their three representatives on the ICC full voting privileges and therefore a voice when it comes to decision making. ICC chairman Shashank Manohar made the announcement and it could be ratified later in the week.
Marcus Willis, the world 772, who almost gave up the game this year and who astonishingly came through pre qualifying and qualifying to make it to Wimbledon and the second round on Centre Court, finally ran out of steam. Roger Federer, seven times a Wimbledon champion and former world No 1 - reckoned to be the best the men’s game had ever seen - as expected simply had too much for the 25-year-old British No 23. Willis was given a standing ovation as he walked on court and massive cheers every time he hit a winner – and his now notorious coterie of fans – the “Berksire Bulls” – dressed in white with headbands in honour of their unlikely hero, sang their hearts out. It was fun and frolics as Willis, with a permanent disbelieving grin on his face, celebrated every point, but Federer cruised through the first set in 25 minutes. Willis though has a powerful serve and unorthodox game, and he levelled the second set at 1-1, celebrating arms wide as he ran to the net. But world No 3 Federer, barely breaking sweat in truth, broke him twice to win the set.
BENGALURU/ NEW DELHI, JUN 29 (IANS): Newlyappointed Indian cricket team head coach Anil Kumble said on Wednesday that the team is more important than individuals. Kumble’s appointment was preceded by a lot of controversy. Former India team director Ravi Shastri -- reportedly the preferred choice of national Test team skipper Virat Kohli -- had accused Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) member Sourav Ganguly of disrespecting him after the ex-India captain left just before his interview for the coach’s job. But Kumble sought to dismiss speculation about any bad blood between him and Shastri. “I was the first one to call Ravi (Shastri). It is not about Ravi or Kumble but it is about the team,” Kumble told reporters here. Talking about the forthcoming West Indies tour, he said India has a good team with the likes of Kohli, Murali Vijay, Amit Mishra and Ishant Sharma having enough experience to guide the youngsters. Kumble’s current tenure is for one year. But the former legspinner chose not to stress on the shortness of the duration, preferring instead to consider it as a journey. Talking about his role as the coach, Kumble said he knows the responsibilities of being at the helm of the Indian cricket team and clarified that the on-field calls will be made by the captain. “I am just there to help. I will only assist him and bring the experience,” said Kumble, who was addressing the media for the first time after being ap-

Kumble added that he is looking for maximum outdoor net practice, which would include two practice sessions every day with the morning session starting at 9 am and the afternoon session starting at 2 pm for the preparatory camp of the travelling Indian team.
Shastri living in a fool’s world: Ganguly
A ‘disappointed’ Sourav Ganguly on Wednesday retaliated to Ravi Shastri’s barbs at him by saying that the former team director was living in a “fool’s world”. Shastri lashed out at the former India skipper on Tuesday for skipping his interview for Team India head coach, and accused the former skipper of being ‘disrespectful’. Reacting to the attack as “personal”, Ganguly, one of the members of the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) also comprising Sachin Tendulkar, V.V.S. Laxman and coordinator Sanjay Jagdale, said
it was a collective decision of the committee to appoint legendary leg-spinner Anil Kumble as the head coach. “I am deeply saddened, disappointed. He should have shown a bit more maturity. These comments are very personal,” Ganguly told reporters. “If Shastri feels that I am responsible for him not being selected as the head coach, he is living in a fool’s world.” “It is disappointing because being in such committees for more than 10 years, he (Shastri) should be aware,” he added. The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president, who was advised by Shastri to be present at such important meetings, also said that such important interviews are not given on camera. Shastri was not physically present during the interview process as he was on a vacation in Bangkok. “I also have an advice for Shastri, when the coach of India is selected, which is one of the high profile jobs, he should be in front of the committee giving his presentation and not sit in Bangkok on a holiday and make a presentation on camera.” “Specially when one of the greatest cricketers of India (Anil Kumble) sat for close to two hours for his presentation,” he said. The 43-year-old also wished Kumble the very best for his new stint. “I wish him all the luck with the Indian team. He is one of the best in the world and has been a great cricketer,” the southpaw said.
Ronaldo-Lewandowski face off for Euros semis slot MARSEILLE, JUN 29 (AGENCIES): Two of Europe’s most prolific marksmen go head-to-head as Robert Lewandowski aims to end Cristiano Ronaldo’s dreams of landing an international trophy when Poland meet Portugal in a Euro 2016 quarterfinal clash on Thursday. Ronaldo is just one goal away from even more European championship history by matching French legend Michel Platini’s record mark of nine goals in the finals. The Real Madrid star has already become the first player to score in four Euros and broken the competition record for appearances. At 31 Ronaldo is unlikely to get a better chance for international glory with the winners in Marseille facing a semi-final clash against his Real Madrid teammate Gareth Bale and Wales or Belgium. Despite a double against Hungary to save Portugal’s blushes to sneak through the group stage in third place, Ronaldo has yet to catch fire in France. A flat display and post-match rant against Iceland in Portugal’s opener was followed by a missed penalty in a stalemate against Austria. He was also kept quiet for 117 minutes a dull last 16 clash with Croatia, but his only effort on goal led to the breakthrough as Ricardo Quaresma headed home after Danijel Subasic parried Ronaldo’s effort.

Lucky Portugal “We’ll always have a chance. We’ve got the best player in the world — Ronaldo — and the likes of Nani, Quaresma and Joao Mario,” said Portugal defender Jose Fonte. Portugal were criticised for their negative approach against Croatia as for the first time in Euros history no team had a shot on target during the regulation 90 minutes. However, Fonte insists Fernando Santos’s men don’t care how they play as long as they make the last four.
“If we have to play bad and win, I’ll do it. As a team you want to play good football and win games but sometimes you can’t.” Po l a n d g o a l k e e p e r Wojciech Szczesny laughed off suggestions Ronaldo is not on top form, but said he has also been impressed by Bayern Munich’s 35 million euro ($38.5 million) recruit Renato Sanches after the 18-year-old came off the bench to win manof-the-match against Croatia. “Portugal are a great team, they are not just Cristiano Ronaldo and some say he
is not playing his best. I would still love to have him in my team,” said Szczesny. “Besides Cristiano, I am impressed by Renato Sanches. Undoubtedly we have a big task ahead of us on Thursday.” Lewandowski is yet to find the net in four games in France, but kept his cool to convert from the spot as Poland progressed to their first major quarter-final for 34 years with a 5-4 penalty shootout win over Switzerland. “We are not worried about Robert, not at all,” said Poland assistant boss Hubert Malowiejski.
Messi showered with love by Argentines BUENOS AIRES, JUN 29 (AGENCIES): Like neurotic parents, Argentines swung from criticism to unconditional love for their star footballer Lionel Messi this week, providing the football-mad nation’s many therapists with rich material for psychoanalysis. Fans’ frustration at the superstar’s missed penalty in Sunday’s defeat to Chile in the Copa America Centenario soon gave way to panic as he vowed to quit the national team ahead of the 2018 World Cup. As fans online pleaded “Leo, don’t go,” psychologists, neurologists and philosophers appeared on chat shows and published newspaper columns to analyze the hero’s motivations and help the nation cope. To judge by the past criticism Messi has received, having a player widely rated as the best in the world is not enough for Argentines. They also want him to
up,” wrote the teacher, Yohana Fucks -- a not-uncommon surname in Argentina. “Don’t make people think that all we care about in this country is winning and being first.”
Football idolatry
Lionel Messi win -- as Diego Maradona did at the World Cup in 1986. Now they have started to ask themselves whether they are too demanding. President Mauricio Macri said Tuesday that Lionel Messi was “God’s gift” to the country and it should “take care of him.” One school teacher became a minor celebrity when she sent an open letter to the player which was read out on television. “Please don’t give
Andres Rascovsky, former president of the Argentine Psychoanalytical Association, links the country’s intense sporting passions to its dirty politics. “Argentines need idols,” he said. That desire stems from “the humiliation and denigration of the masses by the politicians,” Rascovsky added. “That generates a need for them to redeem themselves through sporting heroes like Maradona or Messi.” The provocative extrovert Maradona “is more identified with transgression and omnipotence,” Rascovsky said. That exuberant spirit is epitomized by what Maradona called his “Hand of
God” goal against England at the 1986 World Cup. “The Hand of God was a goal of transgression, a false goal scored with the hand which in a spirit of idolatry was elevated to the status of the divine,” Rascovsky said. The nation’s relationship with Messi is different, however. “A lack of decent values causes a lot of Argentines to identify with the transgressive omnipotence of Maradona,” said Rascovsky. “On the other hand, Messi comes across as a more modest, normal personality.” Maradona himself recently accused Messi of having “no personality.” But he too threw his support behind Messi after he vowed to quit, urging him to stay. “I knew him when he was a kid,” said Enrique Dominguez, who coached the young Messi at Newell Old Boys football club. “He is very sensitive though his face doesn’t always show it.”
