NEW DELHI, JUN 2 (PTI): the BJP-led NDA government Thursday ordered complete sealing of Assam’s border with Bangladesh by June next year, fulfilling an electoral pledge of BJP within a week of assuming power in Assam to check illegal immigration from the neighbouring country. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh issued the order at a high-level meeting attended by top Home Ministry officials here. During the meeting, the Home Minister directed that the Indo-Bangladesh border in Assam should be sealed completely,” a Home Ministry official said. In the run up to recent Assam Assembly elections, BJP had promised to seal the Indo-Bangladesh border in the state completely to check illegal immigration from the neighbouring country. Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has said that sealing of the borders with Bangladesh in two years is one of his two top priorities. NSF clarifies stand on ILP bills issue
DIMAPUR, JUN 2 (NPN): Naga Students Federation (NSF) Thursday said it was compelled to clarify on the allegation that NSF was in support of the three bills passed by the Manipur government during the North East Students’ Organization (NESO) meeting held in Guwahati on May 17, 2016. NSF president, Subenthung Kithan and general secretary, Boveio Poukai Duo clarified that the allegation was “baseless” as the NESO meeting never discussed on the three bills and that NSF in no way would support the bills since it was anti-tribal. The federation also stated that during the North East Students’ Organization meeting, it was decided to submit a memorandum to Prime Minister through the respective state governors on influx of illegal immigrants. However, it was unfortunate that some elements have alleged and dragged the name of NSF in the infamous three anti-tribal people bills, NSF said. While reminding that the NSF had been fighting and would continue to fight against any kind of acts or bills passed against the interest of the Nagas, irrespective of the artificial/arbitrary boundaries, the federation warned that it would not tolerate against any organization or individual with vested agenda trying to distort the facts and twist the story.

DIMAPUR, JUN 2 (NPN): Seven Independent legislators and four BJP MLAs have reaffirmed their support to the NPF-led DAN government under the leadership of chief minister T.R. Zeliang. Both BJP and Independent legislators, during the meeting held separately, adopted several resolutions. The Independent MLAs-- Er. Levi Rengma, Er. Picto, Amenba Yaden, N. Jacob Zhimomi, Y.M. Yollow, S. Chuba Longkumer and Toyang Changkong Chang, in a joint statement said that thought they were not bound by any political party’s constitution, they wished not to comment on the suspension or show-cause notices served on NPF members. They however, resolved to appeal to various groups within the NPF “to sink their differences, if any, so that the party is not weakened in any manner”. This way it would automatically strengthen the NPF-led DAN government, they said. While stating that it was the choice and prerogative of any Independent MLA to choose whom to support or go against, the seven legislators however asserted that it was on their own volition to “extend

While taking cue of the change in guard in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, he said the next could be the fall of Congress under Ibobi in Manipur. Lauding Narendra Modi’s determination to solve the Naga political issue, Dr. Shürhozelie lamented that during the previous years, the issue was never projected in the right perspective at the Centre. They said that the present leadership was determined to bring all-round development in the state against all odds, and was definitely in a position to provide a stable government to the people. The legislators were optimistic that the NPF-led DAN government would complete its full term and appealed to all “not to create any hurdle for the smooth continuance” of the present government headed by TR Zeliang. They further reaffirmed to extend their support to the ongoing political talks between Government of India and NSCN (I-M) and the ‘Framework Agreement’, and as was decided by the Parliamentary Working Committee headed by NLA speaker and chief minister. “We shall continue to strive for an early political settlement to the protracted Naga political problem which is honourable and acceptable to all Nagas”, they added. BJP MLAs: Extending full support to the NPF-led DAN government headed by chief minister
T.R. Zeliang, the BJP Legislature Party (BJPLP) during its meeting held at Kohima on Thursday resolved to strengthen the pre-poll alliance partnership, formed in 2003, in order to come back to power in the 2018 assembly elections. The four BJP MLAs— P. Paiwang Konyak, Imtilemba Sangtam, Dr. TM Lotha and Mmhonlumo Kikon in their resolution appealed to the NPF leadership to extend support to the North East Democratic Alliance floated recently by national BJP president Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Guwahati, so as to strengthen the NDA government in the NE region. Ibobi awaits PM’s appointment
IMPHAL, JUN 2 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi is yet to give an appointment to an all-party delegation from Manipur who want to raise the issue of three anti-migrant bills pending with the central government, Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh said on Thursday. The three bills passed by the state assembly on August 31, 2015 are yet to be given assent in view of the strong objections by the tribals who maintain that these are “anti-tribal”. The legislations’ supporters say that there is nothing in them which are against any indigenous peoples. “If there is anything against any community, the bills could be amended,” said the chief minister. Asked about the inordinate delay in getting the appointment, which had been sought a long time ago, Ibobi Singh said: “The Prime Minister has to face many issues and problems for the whole country and not Manipur alone. It is possible that for the time being he has no time. Besides he will be going on a foreign tour. The delegates shall camp in Delhi and will meet with the Prime Minister and the Home Minister whenever ap-
pointments are given.” The team was scheduled to leave Imphal on May 16 but the leaders perhaps decided to wait for the appointments, as the bills’ supporters have warned that if the team returns empty-handed, they will have to face the wrath of the people. The chief minister further said: “During the North Eastern Council meeting at Shillong, I had conveyed to Modi the plan of the political parties to call on him.” However he did not divulge what reply the Prime Minister had given. There is a strong campaign against the bills by the tribals, who are refusing to claim the bodies of nine activists, killed during agitations in Churachandpur district. Though there have been various forms of agitations in support of the bills, indications are that the central government will not court trouble by giving assent readily. Meanwhile, normal life in Manipur Valley has been thrown out of gear with agitations demanding enactment of the bills. On Monday the Manipur government had ordered all schools and colleges to shutdown sensing trouble of agitation by studetns.

“Central Public Works Department had first proposed to shift all ministries out of the iconic North and South Blocks,” a senior official told ET.”However, serious security concerns were raised. So we scaled down the proposal to include only the government offices spread over different Bhawans,” the official said, requesting not to be identified. The official said the proposal now includes only those ministries and departments which have offices scattered in different buildings. This list includes various ministries and departments spread over Krishi Bhawan, Shastri Bhawan, Paryavaran Bhawan, Sardar Patel Bhawan, Nirman Bhawan, Life Insurance Company building in Connaught Place and RK Puram. The government has worked out two funding models for the project - a fully funded government project involving National Buildings Construction Corporation and another entailing funding by a
concessionaire. While Central Public Works Department will provide alternative housing to the affected residents, the government is yet to decide how to use the buildings once they are vacated by the ministries and departments. Gauba has directed Central Public Works Department to consult with ministries and seek views on conversion of Bhawans into museums before framing the final proposal, officials said. “Converting all Bhawans into museums is not a wise option. It is, after all, prime real estate in the heart of Delhi. We can convert one floor or part of the Bhawans into museums but not the entire Bhawan. We are also exploring the possibility of leasing these out as office space,” an official said. The envisaged common secretariat promises to relieve the government of the seemingly perpetual shortage of office space that forces many departments to pay high rentals.

SHILLONG, JUN 2: Income Tax officials on Thursday raided the residence and offices of three Meghalaya-based businessmen whose name figured in the recently-leaked Panama Papers, an official said. Among those houses raided by the Income Tax officials was the residence of Shillong Lok Sabha member and former Union Minister, Vincent H Pala’s brother Philip Pala at Malki, the official said. The Income Tax officials also raided the residence and office of Rohit Jain at Laban and Keating road besides the residence of Lesley Shylla at Nongrim Bah. The trios are shareholders in two off shore companies Azure Enterprises Global Inc and Eternal Enterprises Inc based in British Virgin Island and have addresses in Cyprus. “We have started our search and seizures in Meghalaya. We are verifying each and every detail of the people who were named in the Panama Papers based past income tax returns, PAN numbers, disclosures made in the black money window last year, remittances received under the liberalised remittances scheme are under surveillance,” the official said. Apart from the trios, the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) had also named Earce Clifford Kharsyntiew, Bokstar Kurkalang, Karishma Jain, Karan Jain, Reshmi Rohit Jain, and Kenneth Fletcher Rangad in the Panama Papers as shareholders of off shore entities in notorious tax havens managed by the much maligned financial management company Mossack Fonseca. However, four businessmen — Kharsyntiew, Shylla, Kurkalang, and Pala – through their counsel S.P.Sharma maintained that their “offshore investments were legal”. “They have every right to invest money any where they wish either in Meghalaya/ other State or abroad as per prevalent law of the country and accordingly they had invested in shares of the offshore companies,” Sharma said.
