KOHIMA, JUN 2 (NPN): National BJP vice president Vinay Sahasrabudhe on Thursday expressed immense satisfaction over the BJP-led NDA government’s performance in two years, saying it had clamped down on corruption as a result of an unblemished and spotless administration led by Narendra Modi. Addressing the members of the NPF-led DAN government, an alliance of the BJP at the Centre, as part of month long event to commemorate the second anniversary of Modi led NDA government at Multi-purpose building, IG stadium, Kohima on Thursday, Sahasrabudhe claimed that over the past two years, no mediapersons have used the word “scam” and “corruption” against the BJP-led NDA government, as none of the ministers have faced such allegations. While stating that Narendra Modi has earned a unique place in political arena of the country for several reasons, Vinay also claimed that “in the last two years, the Prime Minster has not taken holiday even for a single day”. Underlining that the NDA government believes in implementation and performances and not mere legislations, he pointed out that the PM has been able to make a major overhaul in the working system by bringing “work cul-

DIMAPUR, JUN 2 (NPN): Nagaland GBs Federation (NGBF) Thursday appealed Lotha Hoho (LH) to withdraw the public interest litigation (PIL) filed against state government on oil exploration activities in the interest of all Nagas and suggested settling the issue amicably under Naga Customary Law. In a press release, NGBF Media Cell informed that the organisation in a “goodwill mission” visited Wokha and had meeting with Lotha Hoho, Lotha Eloe Hoho, Wokha GB Association, Lotha Students’ Union, Lotha Youth Hoho, ACAUT, Team Metamorphisis, Wokha Chamber of Commerce, senior citizen on oil extraction imbroglio with the state government which is now under sub-judice in the Court. In its meeting, NGBF general secretar y Shikuto Zalipu read out the appeal letter and stated that the Article 371 (A) has empowered Nagas to take decisions even on land and resources. He however, said that taking the grievances to the court by ignoring the rich customary law might bring adverse consequences, which could also affect the Nagas. NEW DELHI, JUN 2 (PTI): the BJP-led NDA government Thursday ordered complete sealing of Assam’s border with Bangladesh by June next year, fulfilling an electoral pledge of BJP within a week of assuming power in Assam to check illegal immigration from the neighbouring country. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh issued the order at a high-level meeting attended by top Home Ministry officials here. During the meeting, the Home Minister directed that the Indo-Bangladesh border in Assam should be sealed completely,” a Home Ministry official said. In the run up to recent Assam Assembly elections, BJP had promised to seal the Indo-Bangladesh border in the state completely to check illegal immigration from the neighbouring country. Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has said that sealing of the borders with Bangladesh in two years is one of his two top priorities. Influx of Bangladeshis through the porous Indo-Bangla border has been a major issue in Assam and BJP and its allies had promised during the election campaign to check it. The Home Minister also directed that full use of tech-

NSF clarifies stand on ILP bills issue

DIMAPUR, JUN 2 (NPN): Naga Students Federation (NSF) Thursday said it was compelled to clarify on the allegation that NSF was in support of the three bills passed by the Manipur government during the North East Students’ Organization (NESO) meeting held in Guwahati on May 17, 2016. NSF president, Subenthung Kithan and general secretary, Boveio Poukai Duo clarified that the allegation was “baseless” as the NESO meeting never discussed on the three bills and that NSF in no way would support the bills since it was anti-tribal. The federation also stated that during the North East Students’ Organization meeting, it was decided to submit a memorandum to Prime Minister through the respective state governors on influx of illegal immigrants. However, it was unfortunate that some elements have alleged and dragged the name of NSF in the infamous three anti-tribal people bills, NSF said. While reminding that the NSF had been fighting and would continue to fight against any kind of acts or bills passed against the interest of the Nagas, irrespective of the artificial/arbitrary boundaries, the federation warned that it would not tolerate against any organization or individual with vested agenda trying to distort the facts and twist the story.

nological solutions be made to secure sensitive areas along the borders. This will involve networking of equipments like high resolution cameras, radars, unattended ground sensors, optical fibres, infra red sensors, aerostats, hand-held thermal imagers etc. and integration of these with command and control architecture. The total length of the Indo-Bangladesh border is 4,096 km of which 284 km falls in Assam. The meeting was told that besides deployment of adequate number of battalions of Border Security Force in Assam, 224 km fence has been constructed for sealing of Indo-Bangladesh border in Assam. However, there are 122 locations (60.7 km) in Assam where physical barrier is not present. In order to achieve the objective of sealing the IndoBangladesh border in Assam, it was decided that 100 locations covering 11.9 km will have physical barrier i.e. fence and 22 locations covering 48.8 km. of riverine areas will have non-physical barriers including technological barriers which will be achieved by June, 2017, the official said. Additional Director General, Border Security Force and Additional Direc-

tor General (Border) CPWD are already on site visit on Indo-Bangladesh border in Assam to prepare comprehensive plan for sealing the border by June, 2017 by means of physical and nonphysical barriers. DIMAPUR, JUN 2 (NPN): Seven Independent legislators and four BJP MLAs have reaffirmed their support to the NPF-led DAN government under the leadership of chief minister T.R. Zeliang. Both BJP and Independent legislators, during the meeting held separately, adopted several resolutions. The Independent MLAs-- Er. Levi Rengma, Er. Picto, Amenba Yaden, N. Jacob Zhimomi, Y.M. Yollow, S. Chuba Longkumer and Toyang Changkong Chang, in a joint statement said that thought they were not bound by any political party’s constitution, they wished not to comment on the suspension or show-cause notices served on NPF members. They however, resolved to appeal to various groups within the NPF “to sink their differences, if any, so that the party is not weakened in any manner”. This way it would automatically strengthen the NPF-led DAN government, they said. While stating that it was the choice and prerogative of any Independent MLA to choose whom to support or go against, the seven legislators however asserted that it was on their own volition to “extend

lie Liezietsu made known that Nagaland had been the only state in the entire NE region which remained an alliance partner of the NDA. While taking cue of the change in guard in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, he said the next could be the fall of Congress under Ibobi in Manipur. Lauding Narendra Modi’s determination to solve the Naga political issue, Dr. Shürhozelie lamented that during the previous years, the issue was never projected in the right perspective at the Centre. Also addressing the gathering, Nagaland chief minister, T.R Zeliang suggested NDA and BJP to work out a strategy of cooperation and adjustments through the newly formed North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA). They said that the present leadership was determined to bring all-round development in the state against all odds, and was definitely in a position to provide a stable government to the people. The legislators were optimistic that the NPF-led DAN government would complete its full term and appealed to all “not to create any hurdle for the smooth continuance” of the present government headed by TR Zeliang. They further reaffirmed to extend their support to the ongoing political talks between Government of India and NSCN (I-M) and the ‘Framework Agreement’, and as was decided by the Parliamentary Working Committee headed by NLA speaker and chief minister. “We shall continue to strive for an early political settlement to the protracted Naga political problem which is honourable and acceptable to all Nagas”, they added. BJP MLAs: Extending full support to the NPF-led DAN government headed by chief minister

T.R. Zeliang, the BJP Legislature Party (BJPLP) during its meeting held at Kohima on Thursday resolved to strengthen the pre-poll alliance partnership, formed in 2003, in order to come back to power in the 2018 assembly elections. The four BJP MLAs— P. Paiwang Konyak, Imtilemba Sangtam, Dr. TM Lotha and Mmhonlumo Kikon in their resolution appealed to the NPF leadership to extend support to the North East Democratic Alliance floated recently by national BJP president Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Guwahati, so as to strengthen the NDA government in the NE region. BJPLP expressed sincere appreciation to the NPF party leadership for going all out in support of the BJP party in the recently held Assam elections, ensuring the resounding victory. The MLAs also congratulated Sardananda Sonowal for becoming the first BJP chief minister of Assam. BJPLP was hopeful that the NDA and like-minded parties in the Northeast region would be able to make its presence felt in neighbouring states so as to bring the region at par with the rest of the country in matters of development.

Ibobi awaits PM’s appointment

IMPHAL, JUN 2 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi is yet to give an appointment to an all-party delegation from Manipur who want to raise the issue of three anti-migrant bills pending with the central government, Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh said on Thursday. The three bills passed by the state assembly on August 31, 2015 are yet to be given assent in view of the strong objections by the tribals who maintain that these are “anti-tribal”. The legislations’ supporters say that there is nothing in them which are against any indigenous peoples. “If there is anything against any community, the bills could be amended,” said the chief minister. Asked about the inordinate delay in getting the appointment, which had been sought a long time ago, Ibobi Singh said: “The Prime Minister has to face many issues and problems for the whole country and not Manipur alone. It is possible that for the time being he has no time. Besides he will be going on a foreign tour. The delegates shall camp in Delhi and will meet with the Prime Minister and the Home Minister whenever ap-

pointments are given.” The team was scheduled to leave Imphal on May 16 but the leaders perhaps decided to wait for the appointments, as the bills’ supporters have warned that if the team returns empty-handed, they will have to face the wrath of the people. The chief minister further said: “During the North Eastern Council meeting at Shillong, I had conveyed to Modi the plan of the political parties to call on him.” However he did not divulge what reply the Prime Minister had given. There is a strong campaign against the bills by the tribals, who are refusing to claim the bodies of nine activists, killed during agitations in Churachandpur district. Though there have been various forms of agitations in support of the bills, indications are that the central government will not court trouble by giving assent readily. Meanwhile, normal life in Manipur Valley has been thrown out of gear with agitations demanding enactment of the bills. On Monday the Manipur government had ordered all schools and colleges to shutdown sensing trouble of agitation by studetns.

“Central Public Works Department had first proposed to shift all ministries out of the iconic North and South Blocks,” a senior official told ET.”However, serious security concerns were raised. So we scaled down the proposal to include only the government offices spread over different Bhawans,” the official said, requesting not to be identified. The official said the proposal now includes only those ministries and departments which have offices scattered in different buildings. This list includes various ministries and departments spread over Krishi Bhawan, Shastri Bhawan, Paryavaran Bhawan, Sardar Patel Bhawan, Nirman Bhawan, Life Insurance Company building in Connaught Place and RK Puram. The government has worked out two funding models for the project - a fully funded government project involving National Buildings Construction Corporation and another entailing funding by a

concessionaire. While Central Public Works Department will provide alternative housing to the affected residents, the government is yet to decide how to use the buildings once they are vacated by the ministries and departments. Gauba has directed Central Public Works Department to consult with ministries and seek views on conversion of Bhawans into museums before framing the final proposal, officials said. “Converting all Bhawans into museums is not a wise option. It is, after all, prime real estate in the heart of Delhi. We can convert one floor or part of the Bhawans into museums but not the entire Bhawan. We are also exploring the possibility of leasing these out as office space,” an official said. The envisaged common secretariat promises to relieve the government of the seemingly perpetual shortage of office space that forces many departments to pay high rentals.

SHILLONG, JUN 2: Income Tax officials on Thursday raided the residence and offices of three Meghalaya-based businessmen whose name figured in the recently-leaked Panama Papers, an official said. Among those houses raided by the Income Tax officials was the residence of Shillong Lok Sabha member and former Union Minister, Vincent H Pala’s brother Philip Pala at Malki, the official said. The Income Tax officials also raided the residence and office of Rohit Jain at Laban and Keating road besides the residence of Lesley Shylla at Nongrim Bah. The trios are shareholders in two off shore companies Azure Enterprises Global Inc and Eternal Enterprises Inc based in British Virgin Island and have addresses in Cyprus. “We have started our search and seizures in Meghalaya. We are verifying each and every detail of the people who were named in the Panama Papers based past income tax returns, PAN numbers, disclosures made in the black money window last year, remittances received under the liberalised remittances scheme are under surveillance,” the official said. Apart from the trios, the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) had also named Earce Clifford Kharsyntiew, Bokstar Kurkalang, Karishma Jain, Karan Jain, Reshmi Rohit Jain, and Kenneth Fletcher Rangad in the Panama Papers as shareholders of off shore entities in notorious tax havens managed by the much maligned financial management company Mossack Fonseca. However, four businessmen — Kharsyntiew, Shylla, Kurkalang, and Pala – through their counsel S.P.Sharma maintained that their “offshore investments were legal”. “They have every right to invest money any where they wish either in Meghalaya/ other State or abroad as per prevalent law of the country and accordingly they had invested in shares of the offshore companies,” Sharma said. DIMAPUR: Nagaland Public Rights Awareness and Action Forum (NPRAAF) has expressed serious concern on the issue of prolonged delay on the part of the state government to implement the findings and recommendations of the “high powered committee on illegal and multiple taxation” which had submitted its report on June 10, 2015. NPRAAF through its information & publicity cell stated that detailed findings of a committee that was constituted on popular demand by public to look into myriad of problems faced by them cannot be wilfully shelved icy cold on the pretext of examination by yet another committee. It stated that the active examination of the HPC report by a committee headed by chief secretary reflected on two points: either (a) the state government did not trust the findings of the HPC

that dedicatedly travelled places and met different strata of society to come out with its final detailed report. Setting up another committee to examine the report of an earlier committee is a clear sign of undermining the report of the previous committee or (b) The government is not committed to implement the findings and therefore adopting delay tactics by setting up unnecessary committee to examine HPC report. Nagaland Public Rights Awareness and Action Forum stated that the government has spent a huge sum of money amounting to Rs 47, 88, 476 on the HPC, and its findings cannot be simply shoved under the carpet. Whether acceptable or not, or whether there have been any anomalies, the report has to be made public since the HPC was constituted out of public demand, stated the release.

NPRAAF also urged the government to clarify on the excess amount of honorarium/salaries paid to the HPC chairman and two of its members. It stated that the monthly honorarium/ salary for the chairman was Rs 1,00, 000 and Rs 50, 000 each for the other two members. Given the fact that the HPC took almost 10 months to complete and submit its final report, the 10 months honorarium/salary for the chairman should be Rs 10, 00, 000 but the government paid Rs 12, 00, 000. NPRAAF stated that was an excess of Rs 2, 00, 000 since the 10 months salary of the two members at the rate of Rs 50, 000 per month should be Rs 5, 00, 000 each but the government paid them Rs 6, 00, 000 each. That is an excess of Rs 1, 00, 000 lakh each thus totalling the excess payment to HPC at Rs 4, 00, 000 for honorarium/salary alone.

SHILLONG, JUN 2: The political turmoil within the ruling Congress in Meghalaya over demands for Chief Minister Mukul Sangma’s removal appears to be far from over. A senior Congress leader said the latest political crisis has accentuated following the massive defeat of Congress candidate Dikkanchi D. Shira, who is Chief Minister Mukul Sangma’s wife, in the Tura Lok Sabha by-election. Former Lok Sabha Speaker Purno Sangma’s son Conrad Sangma won the bypoll by more than 1.92 lakh votes. On the other hand, Chief Minister Sangma on Tuesday accused the opposition Bharati-

ya Janata Party of trying to destabilise his three-year-old Meghalaya United Alliance government’s second term. A TV report on Tuesday claimed Mukul Sangma sent a note to the Congress leadership that a few “dissident” legislators met BJP General Secretary Ram Madhav and Assam’s BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma in a bid to destabilise his government. “The party not in power will try to destabilise the government. It is nothing new and they also made an attempt last year to destabilise my government by bringing a no-confidence motion against assembly Speaker (Abu Taher Mondal),” Mukul told IANS over phone.

IMPHAL, JUN 2: Defying ban imposed by JCILPS and boycott call by KCP, nonlocals in large number turned up to cast vote in elections to the Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC) which was ended amid sporadic political clash and violence on Thursday. The voters were seen inside the polling station casting their votes even after the end of the poll hour, 4 p.m. The overall poll percentage could not be available officially from the State Election Commission (SEC). However, the voters turn out is expected to cross 80%. Braving the hot sun of the day, voters were seen in beeline queue at most of the polling stations amid in presence of heavy police and security personnel deployed following the general strike call given by a militant group.

Security measures have been intensified in non-local dominated polling booths of the city as the JCILPS has imposed a ban on the non-local voters in casting votes as part of their ongoing agitations demanding implementation of ILPS in the state. There have been reports of sporadic violence across the city since morning even though polling processes at non-local dominated stations were relatively conducted peacefully. Most of the cases were related allegations of proxy voting. In one such incident, a sitting legislator, RK Imo of Sagolband Assembly constituency, had a heated argument with former MLA Kh Loken Singh of same constituency over an alleged proxy voting at 24/2 polling station at TG Higher Secondary School. The incident took place around 10.30 am. Three candidates are contesting in ward

Prime Minister Narendra Modi waves during Vikas Parv rally in Balasore on Thursday. (PTI) yet to get a foothold,” he said, apparently taking a dig at the Naveen Patnaik government. Addressing a public meeting in this ‘missile city’ on the completion of two years of his government, he asked the people of the state to bring about a political change. Pitching for development in Odisha, eastern Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar and Assam, Modi said his government is committed to making the country povertyfree. “In my first speech in Parliament, I had stated that my government is dedicated to the welfare of the poor. My aim is to ensure sustainable development in all states. There should be an integrated way

of development so that all the states move forward in an even manner,” he said. The Prime Minister said, “The time has come one has to think why the western part of our country is more developed than the eastern region. Odisha is endowed with natural resources but still its people remain neglected and the state lacks development.” States like Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh show that “BJP means development and development means BJP,” he said. Noting that development created all-round happiness, the Prime Minister said to attain that goal the states and

the Centre must have a good understanding. Modi said his government is giving importance to infrastructure development in areas like rail, road and schools. The schemes meant for the people should involve them for implementation or else they will remain only on paper, he said. Listing various schemes for the poor initiated by the Centre, he said these steps had brought confidence and given them socio-economic well-being. Governments were not for the rich and they should work towards fighting poverty, he said, adding that scientific solutions were needed to remove poverty. During his nearly hourlong speech at the ‘Vikas Utsav’, Modi described himself as the country’s “pradhan sevak” and welcomed public scrutiny of governmental work. Modi said it was his responsibility to give an account of the work being done and every penny spent. Governments in the past had never come forward with any such account. “I am happy that before the people of Odisha, the country’s ‘pradhan sevak’ is presenting an account of the works done. Did governments in the past come here to give an account. In the past 70 years has any government given such an account. When election comes, they would come up sops,” he said.

The arrest of Akhila Karnataka Police Maha Sangha President V Shashidhar from his residence late last night came a day after government brought police and related services under the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA). “He has been arrested last night and sent to judicial custody,” City Police Commissioner N S Megharikh told PTI, while Shashidhar’s family alleged that about 30 police personnel came at midnight to arrest him and did not inform them about where he is being taken.

Arvind Kejriwal NEW DELHI, JUN 2 (PTI): Firing a fresh salvo at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Lt Governor Najeeb Jung, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal Thursday accused them of creating “hurdles” for the Delhi government. The attack came after Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) of Delhi government launched a probe into an app-based premium bus service on a complaint of BJP legislator and Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly Vijender Gupta, who alleged the AAP government wanted to launch the scheme to benefit a Gurgaon-based private bus aggregator. The scheme was redflagged by the Lt Governor on the ground that his approval was not taken before its launch.

the sidelines of the celebration, Gowda said he would discuss the issue with the Chief Justice and try to get funds for the construction of the High Court at the earliest. He however lamented that through there were plans to set up the High Court, the scarcity of cases could possibly be a hurdle. With regard to sub-ordinate courts, he said that the state government needed to hold consultations.

NEW DELHI, JUN 2 (PTI): Victims of sexual harassment in government and private offices will soon be able to get findings of an in-house probe committee, in case it does not recommend charges against the accused, before giving its final verdict. The Ministry of Personnel today decided to form new rules in this regard.

As per the proposed changes in a law, in cases where a complaint committee has not recommended any action against the charged officer in a case of involving allegations of sexual harassment, the disciplinary authority shall supply a copy of the report of the committee and shall consider her representation before coming to a final conclusion, it said.

PM attacks Indira ’s ‘garibi hatao’ slogan

BALASORE (ODISHA), JUN 2 (PTI): Attacking Indira Gandhi’s ‘garibi hatao’ slogan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi Thursday said the call failed as the path chosen to implement it was wrong. “We heard garibi hatao slogan for 40-50 years. The intention of those who gave it may have been good, but the path they chose to eradicate poverty was certainly wrong because poverty, umemployment and disease grew,” he said. Modi termed BJP as a party synonymous with development, saying all BJP-ruled states were developing faster than others. “You can look at the condition of states where BJP is

American dilemma

T

here is an air of uncertainty about which candidates would face each other in the November 2016 US presidential election. The Republican candidate Donald Trump is the presumptive candidate who has obtained the required number of delegates to be formally declared the party’s presidential candidate. The Democratic Party ticket is more or less in Hillary Clinton who has an unassailable lead over her rival Bernie Sanders. The US media has been having a field day targeting Donald Trump as the most hilarious and unpopular candidate. Yet despite all the negative media, Trump continues to win the support of the Republican supporters but not the party establishment. The Republican Party establishment has yet to reconcile with the fact, that Trump is the party’s only candidate left. Even house speaker Paul Ryan has not announced support to Trump. The Republican Party finds itself in a Catch-22 situation in this regard. However, by and large, newly enlisted voters and conservatives are fully with Trump whose speeches may have attracted ire with the political establishment but has been well received by those who feel that Trump is someone who dares to call a spade a spade. In the Democratic Party, Hillary Clinton has an unassailable lead over Bernie Sanders for the party ticket but yet, cannot claim that she’s home and dry yet. Sanders could just deny Clinton the desired numbers if the “Super Delegates” rethink on voting for Clinton on Convention Day. As the race gets heated up and getting closer to the voting day, there are also interesting developments that have also appeared on the political scenario. One is that, both Trump and Clinton, though front runners in their respective parties, are not popular with a majority of US voters. Though the Democratic Party establishment it all for Clinton; the party’s supporters and registered voters however seem to prefer Bernie Sanders. This is because he is considered the stronger contender to face Trump nationally, with recent surveys putting him ahead by about 10 points. Clinton’s past- her indiscretion in the email controversy and action in the financial crash in 2008 has placed her in an embarrassing position. Bernie had raked up Hillary’s financial dealing with financial institutions on Wall Street. He has vowed to break up the “too-big-to-fail financial institutions” on his campaign website. Sander reminded that those institutions received “a $700 billion bailout from the US taxpayer, and more than $16 trillion in virtually zero interest loans from the Federal Reserve.” If Bernie halts Hillary’s progress, it would result in one of the most uncertain periods in US history- no clear candidates. This situation has led to many proposing to have a “third independent candidate” someone like Ross Perot who ran for US president in 1992 and then as candidate of the Reform Party in 1996. Perot may not have been accepted then because both Republican and Democratic party candidates had clear mandates. If there is someone like Perot today, then the possibility of an independent winning the US presidential election cannot be ruled out. This is however still speculative but if the situation persists, no one can predict it not happening or the prospect of US election turning to be a three-party system.

Post-mortem

World clubfoot day

P

onseti International Association (PIA) has designated June 3rd as World Clubfoot Day. The date was chosen to commemorate the birth date of Dr. Ignacio Ponseti, (1914 - 2009) the developer of the Ponseti Method to treat Clubfoot. The goal of World Clubfoot Day is to raise awareness about clubfoot disability and its prevention using the Ponseti Method, a non-surgical treatment that includes gentle manipulation of the feet followed by the application of plaster casts and temporary bracing/shoe. Theme for the World Clubfoot Day is “World free of Clubfoot Deformity”. CURE International India began its service from April 2009 with a goal to eradicate disability caused by Clubfoot in India. At present over 25000 children are enrolled in this program nationwide. Every 10 minutes a child is born with clubfoot in India, ie.over 50,000 children are born with Clubfoot deformity every year (2 per 1000 birth). Clubfoot is a condition where the foot is twisted inward and can be corrected with serial cast and a special shoe. Many children born with clubfoot are misunderstood as polio affected children. Majority of them grow up with clubfoot deformity and live physically challenged all their life. Untreated clubfoot children can’t walk, run or play and many of them never get an opportunity of education. From our experience we learn that there is very less awareness among the public that clubfoot can be treated. Many

children undergo expensive surgery that result is life time painful and nonshoeable foot. CURE International India is providing free treatment for Clubfoot children. CURE Clubfoot Nagaland started on September 2012 at Naga Hospital Authority Kohima on every Tuesday. Till date 46 children have been enrolled in Nagaland. It is estimated that 60–70 are born with Clubfoot every year in Nagaland. Formal MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) was signed between Govt. of Nagaland and Cure International India on 25th March 2013. CURE Clubfoot Nagaland Helpline – 9615606161 CURE International India is a national health care organization working in partnership with Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Maharashtra, Bihar, Jharkhand, Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Odisha, Tripura, Sikkim, J&K and Chattisgarh State Government to provide training and managerial support and we are successfully running state level Clubfoot. With this initiative we humbly request you to kindly grant us permission for a Press Release in your newspaper that would benefit thousands of children, if not treated will be left physically challenged all their life. Nagas’ freedom in captivity

e were told time and again that the issue of the Nagas cannot be settled any time soon mainly for two reasons: (1), for fear of hurting the sentiment of neighbouring communities and (2), the security of India that cannot be kept in jeopardy. Let us start with the first point. If New Delhi has concern for the sentiment of neighbouring communities, then what about the Nagas whose sentiment has being hurt for so many decades by not only denying their political rights but also keeping them in different states and countries? Does New Delhi think that Nagas must continue to suffer to keep its neighbouring communities happy? What have the neighbouring communities done for the Nagas when Naga villages were burnt down, villagers grouped together and relocated their villages, hundreds of their women raped, thousands of their men brutally assaulted and killed by Indian armies? Did the neighbouring communities sacrifice anything for the Naga cause or did they face hardship because of the Naga freedom movement? Is there any logic for the neighbouring community(ies) trying to slice a piece of cake from the share of the Nagas? Naga people must get what is rightfully theirs. It is also a dilemma why the Government of India is trying to please every community with the issue of the Nagas? Does ‘all stake holders will be taken into account’ mean that all the aspirations of the neighbouring communities will be met before settling the issue of Naga people? If that is so, then, is it not the neighbouring communities who

decide for the destiny of the Nagas? That is simply absurd as it invalidated the sacrifices made the Naga patriots. Only the Nagas has the legitimate right to decide for their future. The heartfelt aspiration of the Nagas to live together in freedom is on the edge of ‘disappearing’ because it has been mixed up with so many other issues. If the Meiteis, Kukis, Assamese or Arunachalese has issue with India, let them do it separately. Nagas has no right to stand on their way. The Naga people expect the same response from the neighbouring communities. As long as the Indo-Naga talk pulls together all the concerns of the neighbouring communities, the talk will remain complicated and could cost another decade or more to reach its logical conclusion. The second point is equally perplexed one. We are told that they security of India cannot be compromised in any way for the sake of settling the Indo-Naga issue. Did thousands of Naga martyrs shed their blood for the security of India and not for the Nagas? Is New Delhi holding talks with the Nagas to placate them with a kind of minimum ‘autonomy’ so that Naga nation acts as a buffer state for India and its ‘enemy-ied’ countries? Today, many Naga youth, like me, are confused whether the right of the Nagas had been superseded by the concern of India’s security and the neighbouring communities. How many more years will the Naga’s freedom be kept in captivity of India? Or has the concerned Naga Political Group (NPG) that is in talk with Government of India (GOI) still fail to do its homework? For viable

Do away with the politics of jingoism and half truth

f we look at the bogus scams the modus operandi employed by the fraudsters is aggressive advertisements and tall claims. Similarly if we look at the government both at the centre and state level most of the time it’s about tall claims. Every good thing achieved because of them only and every shortfall because of the opposition. The one thing Bjp led NDA government keeps on blowing it’s own trumpet is opening up of bank account for its citizen but what’s the use of bank accounts if we do not have money in it. How does just opening an account have benefited the poor. Central government is further spending lots of money on “Swachh Bharat” one of their pet project making all the citizens get involved but not much thoughts are given to those people who are daily keeping the cities clean as was seen in Delhi where MCD workers were not paid their dues for months. Better the MLAs and MPs stops sweeping places on 2nd October which are already clean but try to improve the plights of the workers who are actually keeping the city clean everyday and enhance their skills and tools . In Nagaland also there are loud noises about many things but we know the proverb empty vessels make much noise. We proudly claim to be a dry state but the ground reality tell a different story which is evident by the illegal alcohol shops in every

nook and corner. What the use of a law which we are not bothered to implement properly and only want to continue the tag just for namesake. We are always proud of our literacy rate but the numbers does not give us the real picture of our education system. There is growing concern about the large number of educated unemployed but no one questions the quality of our graduates. The government earlier policy of non-detention has to some extend ruined the quality of the students. Further the present semester system at college level has lots of loopholes and scope for manipulation as a result of which we are producing graduates but we are not producing quality graduates. Nagas loves election as figure show more than 80-90% voters turn out in most of the state assembly election but what about the quality of our election process. In Nagaland it’s not one person one vote but it’s about one village one vote, one family one vote and not to forget the open practice of proxy voting, muscle power, money power and misuse of government machinery. We are always proud of our Naga political struggle as one of the oldest political struggle but how long are we going to suffer political instability, extortions, harassments and atrocity at the hands of the army and underground factions. How long are we going to drag Nagaland to un-

derdevelopment. How many precious life and family to be sacrificed and not to forget, to solve the problems of the Naga we have created first of a kind opposition less government but it’s an open secret for whose benefit it is for and the funny side is that BJP and Congress are at war with each other but here they are rowing the same boat with the jingoism “For the benefit of the Nagas” Thus at present the focus is not much on ground reality, but it’s about telling the half truth showing what they want to show and hiding what they do not want to show . Therefore it would be better for our representative’s and the influential pressures groups do away with their fascinations with numbers and with their jingoism but focused on the ground reality and on the proper implementation of policies for the welfare of the poorer and weaker sections of the society which most of the government schemes focused at instead of spending their time and money in blowing up their own trumpets and trying to complete their work only in paper. Let’s not be hypocritic towards the problems of our society and fake our development but observe austerity and work for the real development and progress which we are witnessing in our neighbouring states. Moameren Pongen, Asst prof, Chumukedima

and sustainable Naga solution, consolidated effort of all Naga people is required. The opinion of Naga intellectuals (includes old people who are the treasurers of Naga culture, scholars, politicians, bureaucrats, lawyers, etc) must be taken into consideration and not merely rely on the law experts of India and foreigners. At least 75% of the solution must be based on the unique culture of the Nagas. Otherwise ‘Solution’ will be simply imposition of foreign culture on the Nagas. Let me conclude with a story. Once upon a time, a hunter (say Naga community) went to the jungle for hunting with his Dog (say NNWs). To hunter’s satisfaction, the Dog started chasing after a Bear (say Sovereignty). After sometime, somehow, a Deer came on the way of the Bear. The Dog lost track of the Bear and started running after the Deer. Unfortunately, a rabbit came by and disturbed the track of the hunt again. Finally, the Dog was barking at a hole. When the hunter reached that place, he saw his Dog barking at a Rabbit in the burrow. The hunter did not get the Bear or Deer. He has to be contended with a Rabbit. Today, what are the Nagas hunting for: Bear or Deer or Rabbit? Rejoinder to factors responsible for bad roads

A

propos to the news item c a p t i o n e d ‘ Vi k h e h o on factors responsible for bad roads’ appeared on Nagaland Post dated May 21, 2016. Dear sir, you have rightly mentioned that the line departments like telecom/PHE etc contributed to premature wearing away and damages of roads. I whole heartedly agree with your views. But be it telecom or PHE or any other department that undertakes any developmental activities, it is done only in the interest of the general public. That in order to undertake such developmental works, the sister departments specially in and around Dimapur and Kohima are well co-ordinated before carrying out such works. Firstly, a request letter addressed to the concerned department for issue of clearance certificate/no objection certificate is initiated. As such, not a single work has been executed without obtaining clearance certificate from the concerned department over the years. Even during the course of execution, the officials from PWD oversees the work. Secondly, after the cabling is done by various telecom operators, sufficient fund is paid

to the department for repair and restoration of damaged roads as per estimates sunmitted by PWD (R&B). However, whether such funds for restoration works are utilized properly by the department or not, the matter is left to the public. Thirdly, it is mentioned that “to make the road more durable, proper DPR must be provided, strict supervision of works must be undertaken”. Here, while acknowledging the road construction of Dhobinallah-Signal-Kevijua_Thahekhu village as seen in the media that this road will be of latest German technology, the department engineers are supposed to supervise the work, however, it is very surprising to see that the department engineers does not undertake any supervision thereby leaving the work completely under the mercy of the contractor and his few supervisors who are only layman without any basic technical knowledge. Hope this short response does not hurt anyone but its only a rejoinder in the interest of the public. Vinito Sumi, Signal Bosti, Dimapur

DailyDevotion UT-1 reply to Rejoinder Konyak national workers on Khole’s statement Kiumukum Are You Obsessed K by Something? T Who is the man that fears the Lord? —Psalm 25:12 Are you obsessed by something? You will probably say, “No, by nothing,” but all of us are obsessed by something— usually by ourselves, or, if we are Christians, by our own experience of the Christian life. But the psalmist says that we are to be obsessed by God. The abiding awareness of the Christian life is to be God Himself, not just thoughts about Him. The total being of our life inside and out is to be absolutely obsessed by the presence of God. A child’s awareness is so absorbed in his mother that although he is not consciously thinking of her, when a problem arises, the abiding relationship is that with the mother. In that same way, we are to “live and move and have our being” in God (Acts 17:28), looking at everything in relation to Him, because our abiding awareness of Him continually pushes itself to the forefront of our lives. If we are obsessed by God, nothing else can get into our lives— not concerns, nor tribulation, nor worries. And now we understand why our Lord so emphasized the sin of worrying. How can we dare to be so absolutely unbelieving when God totally surrounds us? To be obsessed by God is to have an effective barricade against all the assaults of the enemy. “He himself shall dwell in prosperity…” (Psalm 25:13). God will cause us to “dwell in prosperity,” keeping us at ease, even in the midst of tribulation, misunderstanding, and slander, if our “life is hidden with Christ in God” (Colossians 3:3). We rob ourselves of the miraculous, revealed truth of this abiding companionship with God. “God is our refuge…” (Psalm 46:1). Nothing can break through His shelter of protection.

his is our UT-1 reply to Kiumukum Yimchungrii to remind him once again that he was expelled on 2nd June 2011 by his own Yimchungrii region as it was clearly stated and also appeared in all the daily Newspapers in 2011. This is known to the whole people and also he could not deny that in the same year. His own people wrote and pointed out much about his mischieves and misdeeds at that time which were well known to the people of this so called leader. This degraded person has forgotten about all these shameful stories within a span of five years, but this is still well known and fresh in the minds of the people. But he must be mentally sick which is why he demanded to know afresh about the past events. Therefore we the UT-1 has once again clearly stated above of what he demanded to know. The Yimchungrii people will make it clear and bring to light again about this person in days to come and his other stories will be exposed afresh as per his demand, and also the UT-1 will write more about his degraded stories in Dimapur. We will gladly keep on writing about him as demanded by him. Let the people be reminded more and more about him afresh. Thank you. H.Sumi, Chairman, Union Territory-1 NNC

onyak national workers would like to shed some truth and seek clarification from Mr. Khole former commander in chief NSCN/GPRN apropos to the article published on 4th May 2016 in Morung Express. Why and how did NSCN split in 1988? The Tangkhul national workers including seven high ranking officers were killed during the 1988 movement, did they come along or

you alone reached Muivah? You suspended Sgt. Maj. Yathrae, Chanlan defence commander, for not killing Muivah? And in 1996 Mr. Muivah wrote u a letter for a meeting to discuss the present Naga problem. But instead you said “When did Muivah descend from heaven? I heard he was in heaven therefore I will not meet him.” If you, Mr. Khole “never har-

bored any wrong thoughts or misguided the Nagas of both Myanmar and India” why in 1989 did you threaten the entire Konyaks of dire consequences if they cooperate or join folds with Muivah? What was the motive behind the killings of Dy. Kilonser Mr. Peyao, Konyak region secretary Mr. Wangchai and VG post commander of Laonyu village Mr. Kaisa? For what and which operation did you

n response to your article published on May 4 2016, in Nagaland local dailies, all the high ranking Konyak Naga Army officers and senior national workers would like to ask Gen.(Rtd).Kholi Konyak former Army Chief of NSCN/ GPRN under S.S.Khaplang leadership to give honest response to the following queries. 1. How did NSCN split in the year 1988 and who was responsible for it? 2. The seven (7) higher ranking Tangkhul national workers whom you killed during the crisis are with you today or have you joined Muivah alone without them? 3. What was the reason behind the killings of Mr.Pevao Dy. Kilonser, Wanghai Secretary Konyak Region and Kaisa, VG Post Commander Laonyu Village, Lage? 4. Why did you suspend Sgt.Maj. Yathrae Chamlam, defence commander for not killing Muivah? 5. Did not you personally ordered to kill Muivah? And dispatched a mission

(operation) led by Capt. Thongo, Lt. Chingtok, 2nd Lt. Kainyam and the group? 6. Did not you ordered in the year 1989 that even the family members of any Konyak joining hands with Muivah shall not be spared? 7. Did not you retorted in the year 1996, I will never meet Muivah, I heard he is in heaven so when did he descended? This happened when Muivah wrote you a letter to meet and discuss on the Naga problem. 8. Till 2011, the Konyak Naga national workers respected and trusted you a lot, but now we have no regards as to where and why you have gone astray? Desert and disappear as you would but don’t try to interfere in our struggle and divide the Konyaks further. Remember, you always reminded us never to leave S.S. Khaplang, with or without you, we will continue to work for the Nagas under S.S. Khaplang leadership. Issued by- All Senior and Higher Ranking Konyak Naga National Workers, NSCN/GPRN through MIP

Developing cricket in the region Sir,

It was a nice gesture and a first of its kind for a BCCI president to come to Nagaland and show keen interest in developing cricket in the region. In fact just a couple of weeks back Indian test cricketer Chateshwar Pujara landed in Dimapur for the same purpose. In cricketing parlance this may be interpreted as a Purple Patch for Cricket in Nagaland. However it remains to be seen as to how far the Nagaland Cricket Board takes this momentum forward. Already marred with controversy over the construction of Sovima cricket stadium, our cricket board has a lot of unanswered questions. And if there is a way to redeem one’s tarnished image, this is the time to seize the opportunity and make amends and take cricket in Nagaland to a higher level. Moreover, the visit of Sh Anurag Thakur and Chateshwar Pujara has left many cricket lovers in the state with a sense of excitement and hope. Cricket lovers are anticipating ‘Better Days’ for cricket in Nagaland. The ball is the court of Nagaland Cricket Board. Do they take cricket in Nagaland forward by introducing various positive measures, Or is this another gimmick by the Nagaland Cricket Board to show that they do exist and that in the pretext of Developing cricket in Nagaland a lot of “other” things can be done. For the sake of cricket in Nagaland, Let’s hope better sense prevails. Temsu Pongen, Dimapur

24 held guilty, 36 freed in Gulberg massacre victed, the court found 11 persons guilty of committing murder under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code and 13 others guilty of lesser crime. Atul Vaidya has been convicted for lesser crimes under Section 436, among others, for attacking and burning shops and houses. Former Congress corporator Megh Sinh Chaudhry is also among those convicted. Those set free include BJP corporator Bipin Patel and police inspector of Meghaninagar K.G. Erda, who had filed the first FIR in the case but later was included among the accused for dereliction of duty. Patel is a sitting corporator from Asarva ward. He was also corporator in 2002 when the massacre took place on February 28, a day after 59 train passen-

AHMEDABAD, JUN 2 (IANS): Fourteen years after an armed mob set ablaze the Gulberg Housing Society, massacring 69 people, including former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri, a special Gujarat court on Thursday convicted 24 people, including VHP leader Atul Vaidya, but rejected the serious prosecution charge of conspiracy. Special Sessions Court Judge P.B. Desai also declared 36 of the 66 accused as “not guilty for want of evidence and ordered their acquittal. Zakia Jafri, the widow of Ehsan Jafri, who had taken up the matter to the Supreme Court, voiced her unhappiness at the verdict, terming it “half justice. She said she would appeal to the Gujarat High Court against the verdict. Of the 24 people con-

gers, most of them Hindu pilgrims, perished in a fire on the Sabarmati Express near Godhra train station. Patel won the election for the fourth consecutive term in 2015. The court rejected the conspiracy charge of the prosecution in the case. Advocate Abhay Bharadwaj, who is among of the team of lawyers who defended the accused persons, said: “The court has accepted our argument that there was a conspiracy to involve a conspiracy theory. This is why the conspiracy theory of the prosecution has been rejected by court. He added, “The Judge first said that there’s no conspiracy. The judge told the government lawyer that he did not want everyone together, but you have to ad-

dress me on individual count of individual accused and tell which individual did what. So the very basis of the prosecution has collapsed. Reacting to the court verdict, Zakia Jafri, who had taken up the matter to the Supreme Court which led to the formation of the Special Investigation Team in the case in 2009, said the SIT had seemingly not done the inquiry properly. “More than half of them have been acquitted, which shows that the verdict and the investigation were not up to mark. It is like half justice. I will have to continue my legal battle (approaching the higher court again) as well, she said. An armed mob set on fire the entire Gulberg Housing Society in Ahmedabad’s Meghaninagar area, inhabit-

ed by members of the minority community, in broad day light and killed 69 people. While the charred bodies of 39 people were found from the society after the arson, 30 other people were declared dead by the Special Investigation Team as there was no trace of them 12 years after the incident. The sessions court judge will pronounce the sentences on the convicts on June 6. All the 60 accused remained present in court while their family members thronged the court compound in large numbers. The judge had heard the case on a day-to-day basis on the instructions of the Supreme Court, which on February 22 this year directed the sessions court to pronounce its verdict in three months’ time.

7 MEA to approach UK for Modi’s extradition

NEW DELHI, JUNE 2 (PTI): External Affairs Ministry will approach the UK for extradition of former IPL chairman Lalit Modi, facing money laundering charges, once the Enforcement Directorate investigating the case has responded to certain suggestions made by it in the matter. Last month, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had requested the Ministry of External Affairs to take up with the British authorities the issue of extraditing Modi to India. Following the communication from ED the MEA’s legal team examined the matter. “Keeping in mind the sensitivity of the case, Enforcement Directorate has

been requested to intimate their concurrence on the options and suggestions made by the MEA and to advise us how to proceed further in the matter. Now, we are awaiting comments of the Enforcement Directorate, Spokesperson in the Ministry of External Affairs Vikas Swarup said. He said MEA’s legal experts have vetted the extradi-

tion request, adding it would be sent to British authorities after getting ED’s response. The Enforcement Directorate wants Modi to “join investigation in a case relating to Indian Premier League (IPL) T-20 cricket tournament after an FIR was registered against him and others under the provisions of Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

is last two years when global growth was slow, he said trends have shown that consumer spending and urban demand have moved up and slowly rural demand also is struggling up. “This in turn will have a spiral effect in coming years on India’s private sector which also has been waiting for opportune moment to become a little more aggressive,” he said. Earlier, delivering a lecture at the Osaka University here, he said for India to realise its full potential for the next few decades, it needs to pursue its programme for economic growth more vigorously. Notwithstanding an unsupportive global environment, India clocked a GDP growth of 7.9 per cent in the JanuaryMarch quarter and 7.6 per cent for the entire 2015-16 fiscal on account of the government’s pro-growth policies, he said. Jaitley further said: “India will maintain this paramount position of fastest growing economy in the world. And if we did that we can present ourself as a society which evolves from an emerging economy and moves towards a more developed economy.” “And we have a pipeline of reforms still left over the next few years to be implemented and notwithstanding global slowdown and two years of bad monsoon, we have reached a situation where we still have the highest growth rate in the world,” he said.

Osaka, Jun 2 (PTI): The Indian economy will more than double to USD 5 trillion in a “matter of few years” as the government steps on its reforms agenda to accelerate growth, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said today. The reforms will not just help India retain the fastest growing large economy tag but also help it move towards becoming “a more developed economy”, he said. “ Wi t h I n d i a ’s G D P poised to grow at a much faster pace, for every few years we are going to add USD 1 trillion to our economy. We are currently USD 2 trillion economy. It’s only a matter of few years that we will jump from USD 2 to 3 to 5 trillion which only indicates the kind of expansion which the economy is going to take place,” he said. Speaking at the India Investment Promotion Seminar organised by CII and DIPP, he said it is easier to grow when the world is growing at a faster pace. “But when the global environment is unsupportive and at times obstructive, where shrinkage of trade is taking place, that is the real test because they say when the going is good everybody is at best. When the going is challenging then to defy the odds, and counter the trends is a real challenge,” he said. Stating that India has received the distinction of being the fastest growing economy

Trump a ‘fraud’, trying to scam people of US: Clinton

Was h i n g to n, J u n 2 (PTI): The war of words between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump today intensified as the Democratic presidential frontrunner accused the Republican presumptive presidential nominee of “scamming” the American people after he got embroiled in a fresh ‘Trump University’ controversy. “He (Trump) is trying to scam America the way he scammed all those people at Trump University. It’s important that we recognise what he has done, because that’s usually a pretty good indicator of what he will do,” Clinton said at an election rally in New Jersey. “Today, we’re learning about another scam: the socalled Trump University. The New York Attorney General is suing Donald Trump for fraud,” she alleged. “And his own employees testified - I want you to hear this - his own employees testified that Trump U - you can’t make this up - that Trump U was a fraudulent scheme where Donald Trump enriched himself at the expense of hardworking people,” she said. “Trump and his employees took advantage of vulnerable Americans, encouraging them to max out their credit

cards, empty their retirement savings, destroy their financial futures, all while making promises they knew were false from the beginning. This is just more evidence that Donald Trump himself is a fraud,” Clinton said. In documents released this week from one of the three pending lawsuits against Trump University, former employees have described the now-defunct business as a “fraudulent scheme” and “total lie” that “preyed upon the elderly and uneducated”. In its sales efforts, the varsity relied on high pressure tactics and intimidation to drum up customers, encouraging them to take out new credit cards or drain their retirement accounts to pay for Trump University.

China not to allow foreign meddling in Xinjiang

Clinton and Trump are expected to clash ithe November general elections. The Democratic presidential primary is scheduled for June 7 and Clinton is pitted against Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders. Meanwhile, unleashing a new round of attack against Clinton, Trump said the 68year-old former Secretary of State has “no natural talent” to be the US president. “She has no natural talents to be president. This is not a president,” the 69-yearold business tycoon told his supporters at an election rally in Sacramento in California. “A lot of people think I look extremely presidential. This (Clinton) is not presidential material,” Trump said. Referring to the email scandal of the former Secretary of State, Trump said she should not be allowed to run. “Honestly, she should not be allowed to run. It’s a disgrace to the laws of our country. “I’ll tell you what. She doesn’t know what the hell she’s doing. It’s going to be another four years of disaster,” he said, adding voters would probably be “better off ” with Bernie Sanders as their president. “But that’s not going to happen,” he said.

Power sharing a thorny issue in Lanka Constitution framing COLOMBO, JUN 2 (PTI): The form of power sharing has become a thorny issue in the formulation of Sri Lanka’s new Constitution with the Sinhala majority backing a unitary state while minority Tamils supporting a federal structure. The Public Representations Committee, which had been tasked in January to seek public views on the process of formulating the new Constitution for the country replacing the existing 1978 constitution, said divergent views have been expressed by the public on the nature of the state. These range from a federal to a unitary, secular to non-secular and other inbetween options as well. Over 2,500 persons/organisations appeared before the committee and made oral and written representations. The committee says many of the representations from the Tamils from the northern province and eastern provinces have expressed the desire for a federal state. At the same time, there were many submissions from other parts of the country that strongly expressed the desire for a unitary state. A federal state is strong-

in 1949, citizens’ freedom of religious belief is fully respected and believers’ normal religious needs effectively met, it claimed. In Xinjiang, “the positive role of religious circles in promoting economic development and social stability is well displayed, the government’s capability of administrating religious affairs is constantly strengthened, international exchanges in the religious field are being expanded and the proliferation and spread of religious extremism is being effectively contained,” it said. Religious extremism is by nature “anti-human, antisociety, anti-civilisation and anti-religion,” it said. It defended China’s efforts in fighting religious extremism, saying it is a just act to safeguard the fundamental interests of the country and the people.

EgyptAir crash: Jet’s black box search zone narrowed after signal detected

K

Y M C

CAIRO, JUN 2 (AGENCIES): The search zone for the crashed EgyptAir flight recorders has been narrowed to 2 kilometres from 5 kilometres after a vessel picked up a signal from one of the black boxes, a source on the investigation committee said on Thursday. The source denied French media reports claiming the EgyptAir plane had emitted a series of warnings during flights that took off in the 24 hours preceding the crash. Search teams are working against the clock to recover the two flight recorders that will offer vital clues to the fate of the plane that crashed en route from Paris to Cairo on May 19 killing all 66 people on board. Without the black boxes, say investigators and aviation disaster experts, there is not enough information to determine what went wrong or whether the plane was brought

ly being linked to the notion of separatism by those who oppose it. On the other hand, a unitary state is viewed by those, who favour greater devolution, as a continuation of an undemocratic, centralised form of state control, the report said. Some, specially the Sinhalese, think that a federal state will eventually lead to break up of the state. National reconciliation as an urgent task. There were divergent views as to how it could be achieved. The question of the merger of the Northern and Eastern provincial councils was raised by the Tamil community. The main argument was that a merger of the Northern and Eastern provinces is a condition laid down in the Indo-Sri Lanka agreement of 1987 and deviation at this stage without going through the process of holding a referendum as set out in the deal will be a step backwards and would be a breach of the agreement. The new Constitution is expected to be ready by early next year. Parliament has resolved to form a Constitutional Assembly to formulate the draft Constitution.

IIT Kharagpur alumnus kills US professor at UCLA over academic spat

WASHINGTON, Jun 2 (Agencies): “William Klug, UCLA professor is not the kind of person when you think of a professor. He is a very sick person. I urge every new student coming to UCLA to stay away from this guy,” Mainak Sarkar wrote on March 10 in a blog chillingly slugged “Long Dark Tunnel.” He added: “I was this guy’s Phd student. We had personal differences. He cleverly stole all my code and gave it to another student. He made me really sick.” On Wednesday, Sarkar, a 38-year old IIT Kharagpur alumnus, who had been working on a Ph.D at UCLA for several years, walked into Klug’s office in at University of California, Los Angeles’ Henri Samueli School of Engineering, and shot him dead. He then took his own life. Klug, who was only a year older than Sarkar, was an associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, the very subject the Indian student got his undergrad degree from IIT Kharagpur in 2000. Sarkar worked briefly as a software developer in Bangalore and came to the US in 2003 in to earn a master’s degree from Stanford, before enlisting as a doctoral student at UCLA with Klug as his advisor.

Somalia forces end extremist siege of hotel; 15 killed

Beijing, Jun 2 (PTI): China today said it will not allow any “foreign” interference in the Communist nation’s religious affairs and defended its crackdown on Islamic militants in the restive Xinjiang province bordering countries like Pakistan as a “just act” to protect its fundamental interests. “Xinjiang enjoys unprecedented religious freedom”, a Chinese government white paper said asserting that the freedom of religious belief in the province” cannot be matched by that in any other historical period.” Religious extremists, in the name of religion, spread radical and extremist views and take extremist means to try to establish a theocracy, the report titled ‘Freedom of Religious Belief in Xinjiang’ said. Since the founding of the People’s Republic of China

UNITED NATIONS, JUN 2 (AGENCIES): The United States on Wednesday pushed the UN to condemn North Korea’s latest attempted missile launch, and for world governments to ramp up efforts to slap sanctions on Pyongyang. A draft statement circulated by the US to the 14 other members of the Security Council strongly denounces a series of failed missile launches on Tuesday and on April 27 and 28. A previous council move to condemn North Korea’s attempts to test-fire missiles in late April was blocked after Russia sought to include references to US-South Korean plans to develop missile defense. Diplomats said they expected China and Russia to back the statement demanding that North Korea “refrain from further actions, including nuclear tests” in violation of UN resolutions. Council member have until 4:00 pm (2000 GMT) to raise objections. UN resolutions prohibit North Korea from developing ballistic missile technology. The draft statement calls on UN member states to “redouble efforts to implement fully the measures imposed” on North Korea in a resolution adopted in March that provides for the toughest sanctions to date on Pyongyang. Among the sweeping measures is a new requirement that all countries must inspect cargo destined for and coming from North Korea, in all airports and sea ports. The resolution bans or restricts exports of coal, iron, iron ore and other minerals from North Korea, and prohibits the supply of aviation fuel including rocket fuel.

Security forces examine the scene after a bomb attack on Ambassador Hotel in Mogadishu, Somalia on Thursday.

M OG A D I S HU, J u n 2 (Agencies): Somali security forces on Thursday ended an overnight siege by extremist gunmen at a hotel in the capital Mogadishu which killed least 15 people, including two Members of

down deliberately. The recorders are designed to emit acoustic signals for 30 days after a crash, giving search teams fewer than three weeks to spot them in waters up to 9,840-feet deep, which is on the edge of their range. The Egyptian investigation committee said on Wednesday that the search was intensifying ahead of the arrival of another vessel, the John Lethbridge, from Mauritius-based company Deep Ocean Search to help retrieve the devices. That ship is expected to arrive within a week, it said. “Search equipment aboard French naval vessel Laplace ... has detected signals from the seabed of the search area, which likely belong to one of the data boxes,” the Egyptian committee said in its statement. France’s aviation accident bureau BEA confirmed that the signal had come from

Parliament, officials said. The assault started when a vehicle laden with explosives detonated outside the Ambassador Hotel on Wednesday evening and then three militants stormed inside the building, said the African

one of the recorders. The Laplace has equipment from ALSEAMAR, a subsidiary of French industrial group Alcen, which can pick up black box pinger signals over long distances up to 5 km and was contracted by the Egyptian investigators last week. Egyptian investigators have said that the EgyptAir plane did not show any technical problems before taking off and the pilot made no distress call to air traffic control. There has been no claim of responsibility for the crash. The jet transmitted a series of messages in the minutes before it crashed showing a rise in temperature at the co-pilot’s window and smoke on board, but investigators say these shed little light on the cause. There are also conflicting reports of the plane’s last moments as it crossed from Greek to Egyptian airspace.

Union Mission in Somalia. The African Union multinational force is bolstering Somalia’s weak government against an insurgency by the Islamic extremist group, AlShabab and the militant group claimed responsibility for the attack. Al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the attack. One militant was killed at the entrance of the hotel while two others entered the building and shot at residents, the African Union force said in a statement. All the attackers were killed in the siege that ended early Thursday. Nine bodies were removed from the hotel after troops killed the last remaining assailants, Capt. Mohamed Hussein, a senior Somali police officer told The Associated Press. Six out of 40 people injured in the attack died from their wounds, Ahmed Mohamed, a nurse at Madina hospital in Mogadishu, said.

Chairman of the African Union Commission for Somalia, Francisco Madeira, condemned the attack, saying it targeted government Ministers, politicians and innocent citizens The attack came on the eve of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, during which extremists often step up attacks in this volatile East African country. The hotel assault highlights challenges facing the Somali government and African Union forces that are struggling to secure the seaside capital, which has seen a series of attacks by Al-Shabab. An attack on another Mogadishu hotel and public garden in February killed at least nine civilians. A car bomb exploded outside a restaurant in the capital in April, killing at least five. The insurgents have been ousted from most of Somalia’s cities but continue to carry out bombings and suicide attacks.

UCLA has a large contingent of students from the subcontinent, as do many universities in the US with good engineering schools; In fact, both the current dean of the engineering school (Jayathi Murthy) and her predecessor (Vijay Dhir) are of Indian-origin. The Henri Samueli School of Engineering itself provides one of the most stellar examples of the very American ethos that encourages teacher-student collaboration. It is named after Henri Samueli, a professor whose mentoring of and partnership with his PhD student Henry Nicholas III that led to their co-founding eventually of Broadcom, a chip company that was bought for $ 37 billion by Avago couple years back. Both Samueli and Nicholas retired as billionaires in what is arguably one of the most financially successful student-teacher partnerships of all time. But the Klug-Sarkar relationship did not go according to that script. After initially praising Klug and thanking him in school records for being his mentor, Sarkar turned against him some months back as he neared his tenth year as a Phd student. “Your enemy is your

enemy. But your friend can do a lot more harm. Be careful about whom you trust. Stay away from this sick guy,” he wrote on his blog, accusing Klug of stealing his code and favoring another student. Klug’s friends and associates rubbished the accusations, saying it was “absolutely untrue” and “psychotic.” “Bill was extremely generous to this student, who was a subpar student,” an unnamed source told LA Times about Klug, a father of two kids. “He helped him out and interceded for him academically.” On the UCLA website Sarkar is listed as part of the Klug Research Group, a team of six postdoctoral and PhD students researching biomechanics. Two others, besides Sarkar, are of Indian-origin: Ankush Aggarwal, ME Ph.D. student, 2008-, and Shankarjee Krishnamoorthi, ME PhD student, 2009-. Sarkar is the seniormost of the lot with a Phd enrollment going back to 2006, two years longer than any of the others. In his doctoral dissertation, submitted in 2013, Sarkar expressed gratitude to Klug for his help and support. ‘’Thank you for being my mentor,’’ he wrote in the acknowledgement.

Strong quake rattles Indonesia’s Sumatra

PADANG, Jun 2 (AGENCIES): An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 shook buildings and caused momentary panic in the Indonesian port city of Padang on Thursday, officials and residents said, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injury. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not issue an alert immediately after the quake and Indonesia’s BMK weather agency said there was no threat of a tsunami. The quake was centred about 155 km (95 miles) south of Padang, off the coast of Sumatra island at a depth of about 50 km (30 miles), the USGS said. It had originally been reported with a magnitude of 6.2. Memories are still fresh in Indonesia of the massive 9.15 magnitude undersea

quake that triggered an Indian Ocean tsunami which killed more than 200,000 people in a dozen countries. Most of those killed were in the province of Aceh on Sumatra’s northwest tip. A Reuters witness reported initial panic after the latest quake, which struck before dawn and lasted about 30 seconds. Residents rushed out of their homes and into the streets, but with no apparent signs of damage of injury, things quickly returned to normal. Indonesia straddles the so-called ‘Pacific Ring of Fire’, a highly seismically active zone, where different plates on the earth’s crust meet and create a large number of earthquakes and volcanoes.

Ryan Gosling: Gwen Stefani Denies Blake Shelton Engagement Rumors Amber Heard releases Women are leaps and new photos of alleged abuse bounds beyond men I

A

mber Heard, who has filed for divorce from actor Johnny Depp and accused him of domestic violence , has released fresh photos which allegedly depict past incidents of abuse by the Hollywood superstar. The 30-year-old actress sports a cut lip and seemingly bruised eye in the new photos. The injuries were allegedly inflicted by Depp, 52, in December 2015, reported People magazine . Johnny Depp kisses Jimmy Kimmel onscreen Heard has got a restraining order against the actor and claimed that besides the latest incident of violence on April 21, the actor was violent to him in the past as well. In documents filed May 27 to seek a temporary restraining order against Depp, Heard had alleged that during the “entirety” of their fouryear relationship, “Johnny has been verbally and physically abusive to me.” She described a December event that possibly correlates with the alleged timeline of these new photos. “There also have been several prior incidents of domestic violence with Johnny, in particular there was one severe incident in December 2015 when I truly feared that my life was in danger,” she had said in her court declaration. Depp’s

A

divorce attorney Laura Wasser claims that Heard, who filed for divorce from Depp on May 23 after just 15 months of marriage, is “attempting to secure a premature financial resolution by alleging abuse.” The actor’s daughter Lily Rose , his first wife Lori Ann Allison , and his ex-partner Vanessa Paradis had dismissed Heard’s allegations of domestic violence. An LAPD spokesperson

said the officers responded to a 911 call but determined there was “no evidence of any crime” at the scene. In a statement Tuesday, Heard’s lawyers said she declined to make a statement to police at the time to “protect her privacy and Johnny’s career,” but plans to make one and “hopes to give the LAPD the opportunity to conduct an accurate and complete investigation.

ctor Ryan Gosling says women are much stronger than men and he has realised this more so after the birth of his two daughters. The 35-year-old actor, who has daughters Esmerelda , 18 months and newborn Amada with partner Eva Mendes , believes women are “better than men,” reported Female First . “I think women are better than men. They are stronger. More evolved. You can tell especially when you have daughters and you see their early stages, they are just leaps and bounds beyond boys immediately.” “I’ve always liked women more. I was brought up by my mother and older sister. I found my way into dance class. My home life now is mostly women. They are better than us. They make me better.” Gosling also revealed being objectified doesn’t bother him as he believes women have had to deal with it for long enough.

f wedding bells are ringing, Gwen Stefani can’t hear them. The “Make Me Like” you singer has been in relationship with Blake Shelton since last fall, and though their romance has seemingly moved at warp speed, neither musician is in a rush to get remarried. After all, Gwen was married to Bush’s Gavin Rossdale from 2002-2015, while Blake was married to Kaynette Gern from 20032006 and then to Miranda Lambert from 2011-2015. In the June 13 issue of Us Weekly, however, a Gwen family source claimed that the singers—who met as mentors on NBC’s The Voice—”talk openly about their future together. They say things like, ‘When we get married...’ all the time.” In fact, one of the pop star’s friends claimed she is “totally smitten and wants to have a baby with Blake. Gwen is trying to get pregnant.” Not so, according to Gwen. In a radio interview with 94.7 Fresh FM’s The Tommy Show Wednesday, Gwen denied reports that she’s ready to wed. “Let’s just take it one day at a time,” she told host Tommy McFLY. “Everything’s crazy right now so no, absolutely not. Can you imagine the amount of gossipy, weird stories people make up? To me, it makes me laugh every day. I actually do Google my name just so I can

stuff. Like, that is what’s funny.” The day of her interview, Rolling Stone published an interview with Blake in which he opened up about the origins of their romance. “As I was making the record, other developments were happening,” Blake told the magazine. “I was spending some time with Gwen all of a sudden, and she became my closest ally, my friend, my person in my life who had my back, and I had hers. And created this bond with somebody that I never would have thought in a million years.” “We were starting The Voice last year, and I had to sit down and go, ‘Look, by the time this thing airs, my life will have completely changed, and we need to talk about this now because it may affect what we talk about on the show.’ I just felt like there doesn’t need to be secrets,” the 39-year-old “Came Here to Forget” singer revealed. “And then the same thing [happened] with Gwen. It was like, ‘Here’s what’s going on, this show ain’t gonna air until three months from now, so let’s get this talked about right now.’ That’s how we even found out what was going on. And we just started to develop a friendship after that. And it took awhile, because it’s chaos. But just over time, seeing each other a lot at work, it just kind of developed into that.”

In this clip from the show, Kylie and Kendall Jenner, along with Khloe Kardashian, meet with a makeup artist who is going to create disguises for them to dress up in. The trio wants to go undercover on a Hollywood Tours

Kylie admits, “I missed out on being normal…being able to feel like I can like get out of the car and nobody’s staring at me, do you know what I mean? That’s why I missed out on.” “Yeah, yeah, totally,” Kendall agrees.

ctress Megan Fox, who is expecting her third child with her estranged husband Brian Austin Green, has claimed that she receives messages from her baby from inside the womb. Making an appearance on the popular talk show ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ on Tuesday, Fox said night said her unborn child has given her ‘messages’ advising her to relocate to a ‘whole different place,’ reports dailymail. co.uk. “You don’t hear an audible voice, but I feel like you get messages from the child if you are open to it,” Fox said. “Like, for instance, this baby wanted me to live some place else, so we are moving to a whole different place in Los Angeles because I feel like that’s where this baby wants to be raised,” she added. The ‘Jennifer’s Body’ actress also said the unborn child is telling her it’s a ‘super genius’ like rocket scientist Werner von Braun or inventor Elon Musk. The actress debuted her baby bump in April this year. She has two children -- three-year-old Noah and two-year-old Bodhi -- with Green.

The pop power pair started dating last March and their romance appeared to be going from strength to strength, but sources have confirmed to Mirror Celebs that their relationship has now ended its course. “There was no drama. Things just don’t work out sometimes,” an insider told People magazine. Just last month Taylor gushed about their “magical relationship” - and there was even talk of marriage. “I’m just taking things as they come. I’m in a magical relationship right now. And of course I want it to be ours, and low key... This is the one thing that’s been mine about my personal life,” she said. arry Potter’ star Daniel Radcliffe, who is essaying the role of a villain named Walter in the American magic caper thriller film ‘Now You See Me 2,’ feels differently of how the audience would take to his role. He said he didn’t feel that there was ‘too much of a crossover’ between the world of magic that the ‘Harry Potter’ films inhabit with that of ‘Now You See Me 2,’ reports ew.com. “I don’t think of things in those terms. Obviously, the ‘Harry Potter’ films are connected with magic, but the world of magic they inhabit is so different from the one ‘Now You See Me’ inhabits that it didn’t feel like there was too much of a crossover,” Radcliffe said. Radcliffe was also drawn to the Jon M. Chu directorial due to the film’s cast, which includes Mark Ruffalo , Woody Harrelson , and Jesse Eisenberg . “Working with that group of actors was extraordinary and was one of the attractive things about doing the film,” he said. “I have looked up to people like Mark Ruffalo, and Woodly Harrelson, and, indeed, Jesse Eisenberg. I have always loved Jesse’s work, so to get to work with him was fantastic,” Radcliffe added. ‘Now You See Me 2’ will release in India on June 17. The film is distributed by PVR Pictures in the country.

Eight seed Saina, who had won the title in 2009, 2010 and 2012, is likely to take on top seed Carolina Marin of Spain in the last eight here. However, it was the end of the roads for Rio-bound women’s doubles and men’s doubles pairs of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa, and Manu Attri and B Sumeeth Reddy after they suffered contrasting defeats at the Istora Gelora Bung Karno Stadium earlier today. While 2010 Commonwealth Games champions Jwala and Ashwini lost 9-21 18-21 to Chinese combo of Huang Yaqiong and Tang Jinhua in women’s doubles, World No. 20 Manu and Sumeeth went down 18-21 13-21 to sixth seeded Korean Ko Sung Hyun and Shin Baek Cheol. Saina, who had beaten Fitriani at the Badminton Asia Championships in April this year, dished out a dominating game which the Indonesian had no clue. In the opening game, Saina moved to a 9-7 lead and then raced to 14-7 with six consecutive points. The Indian kept marching ahead and soon pocketed the game to earn the bragging rights. In the second game, Saina came out with all cylinders blazing as she zoomed to a 10-3 lead and then continued her rampaging run even as Fitriani’s game crumbled.

LOS ANGELES, Jun 2 (Agencies): Brazil’s Copa America injury crisis deepened on Wednesday after veteran striker Kaka withdrew from the squad with a hamstring injury three days before the team’s tournament opener against Ecuador . The 34-year-old Orlando City attacking midfielder had been looking forward to competing in his first Copa America but saw his dream dashed after suffering an injury at Brazil’s Los Angeles training base. “Kaka has had discomfort in training and safety will be auditioned MRI, which showed a small problem. Doctors indicate between 15 and 20 days of recovery,” said Brazilian Football Confederation official Gilmar Rinaldi. The former FIFA World Player of the Year will be replaced by Sao Paulo’s Paulo Henrique Ganso. Brazilian officials have already spoken to Sao Paulo to secure Ganso’s participation and are awaiting formal clearance from CONMEBOL. Kaka’s injury ends his hopes of participating in the Copa America for the first time. This year’s special edition of the tournament kicks off on Friday in Santa Clara when hosts the United States face Colombia. Kaka’s withdrawal brings to five the number of Brazilian players who have withdrawn from the squad through injury. Kaka himself had been an injury replacement for Bayern Munich’s Douglas Costa. Other players ruled out through injury include Ricardo Oliveira Santos, replaced by Jonas, goalkeeper Ederson and Barcelona midfielder Rafinha. Brazil open their Copa America Centenario campaign against Ecuador at the Pasadena Rose Bowl on Saturday.

Paris, Jun 2 (Agencies): Novak Djokovic has progressed into the semi-finals of the French Open after eliminating Tomas Berdych in straight sets. The 6-3 7-5 6-3 quarterfinal win means Djokovic will meet either Dominic Thiem or David Goffin in the final four, with Andy Murray playing Stan Wawrinka in the other semi. The world No 1 was never truly troubled by Berdych and marched into the last four having dropped just one set, to last-16 opponent Roberto Bautista Agut, en route. He raced through the opening set and, even when confronted by resistance at 5-5 in the second, the Serb broke at the crucial time to avoid a tie-break. Berdych broke as the third set began but Djokovic immediately replied with his own, before the match was briefly suspended due to rain at 3-3. No sooner had they returned, Djokovic broke to go 5-3 ahead before serving out the match. Thursday’s result edges Djokovic one step closer to challenging for the only Grand Slam that still eludes him. Should he finally lift the Roland Garros trophy, Djokovic would be the simultaneous champion of all four Grand Slams. In beating Berdych, Djokovic extends his winning record to 24-2 in their career head-to-head.

LONDON, Jun 2 (PTI): The International Cricket Council (ICC) has admitted that it deliberately tries to put India and Pakistan in the same group at world events as it is hugely important for the success of tournaments. India and Pakistan are set to meet in the group stage of Champions Trophy in England next year, making the mouthwatering clash a reality for the fifth tournament in succession. “No doubt we want to try to put India versus Pakistan in our event,” ICC chief executive Dave Richardson was quoted as saying by ‘The Telegraph’. “It’s hugely important from an ICC point of view. It’s massive around the world and the fans have come to expect it as well. It’s fantastic for the tournament because it gives it a massive kick.” Richardson, however, denied that the constant clash between the arch-rivals affects the fairness of ICC events. “What we try and do is make sure that when you add up the rankings of the different groups, they all add up to the same number of points.
