LONDON, JUN 4 (IANS): Suspected Islamist terrorists rammed a van into a group of pedestrians on the London Bridge and then launched knife attacks at the nearby Borough Market, killing seven people and injuring 48. Police shot dead all three suspects. The Saturday horror took place when a white transit-style van speeding toward the London Bridge Tube station drove into a crowd of unsuspecting people including tourists enjoying the pleasant weather around 10 p.m., sending one man flying some 20 feet in the air. In no time, four or five people were on the ground, dead or dying, witnesses told the media. The vehicle continued to drive towards Borough Market, just south of the bridge, where three assailants got out and stabbed civilians at a restaurant as well as an officer from Transport Police, the BBC reported. attacking men and women in the Borough Market whose pubs and restaurants were packed with people. One eyewitness spoke of the men shouting “this is for Allah” as they stabbed indiscriminately. Armed officers who reached the scene shot the suspects, who wore fake bomb vests, within eight minutes of the first call. Police raided a building in east London that was the home address of one of the three attackers. Police said 12 people were arrested in connection with the attack. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump tweeted: “Whatever the US can do to help out in London and the UK, we will be there -- We are with you. God bless. “We

need to be smart, vigilant and tough. We need the courts to give us back our rights. We need the Travel Ban as an extra level of safety!” Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who returned to India early on Sunday after a four-nation European tour, denounced the killings of the innocents and offered condolences to the victims.

UK PM calls for beefed up terror response British Prime Minister Theresa May reacted on Sunday to an attack that killed seven people in London by saying things could not continue as they were and that the strategy for dealing with terrorism needed to be reviewed in four ways.

May mentioned beefing up jail sentences for terrorism offences and additional cyberspace regulations as possible areas of policy change. “We cannot and must not pretend that things can continue as they are,” May said in a televised statement in front of her Downing Street office. May said: “We believe we are experiencing a new trend in the threat we face as terrorism breeds terrorism, and perpetrators are inspired to attack not only on the basis of carefully constructed plots after years of planning and training, and not even as lone attackers radicalised online, but by copying one another and often using the crudest of means of attack.”

Women to be allowed in combat role: Gen Rawat NEW DELHI, JUN 4 (AGENCIES): In a transformational move, the Indian Army is all set to open up combat positions for women, a gender barrier broken by only a few countries globally. Army Chief Gen. Bipin Rawat said the process to allow women in combat role, currently an exclusive domain of men, is moving fast and initially women will be recruited for positions in military police. “I am looking at women coming as jawans. I am going to start it soon. Firstly, we will start with women as military police jawans,” he said. Currently women are allowed in a number of select areas including in medical, legal, educational, signals and engineering wings of the Army but combat roles are kept off limit for them due to operational concerns and logistical issues. The Army Chief said he was ready to recruit women as jawans and the matter is being taken up with the government. “We have already started the process,” Gen Rawat told PTI in an exclusive interaction recently.

Govt open to suggestions on cattle slaughter notification: Vardhan NEW DELHI, JUN 4 (AGENCIES): Amid a raging controversy over the government’s cattle slaughter notification, Environment Minister Harsh Vardhan on Sunday asserted that his ministry is open to suggestions and not viewing it as a prestige issue. The purpose behind the notification was not to influence people’s food habits, affect slaughter business or to harm any particular group, he said. “Suggestions that have been submitted will be reviewed. It is not a prestige issue for the government,” PTI quoted the minister as saying. The minister made the comments in response to media queries if the suggestions sent by the political parties were being reviewed and if the government was open to considering alterna-

tive views on the issue. The row over the fresh cattle slaughter rules has sparked a nationwide controversy and protests, with Kerala and West Bengal governments openly opposing the Centre’s notification. West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee described the ban as undemocratic and unconstitutional and said her government will not accept it. In Tamil Nadu, the Madras High Court stayed the order for four weeks after a petition was filed challenging the new rules. The petition argued that the order is inimical to personal liberty, right to livelihood and encroachment into matters that are in the state’s domain. However, the minister said, “Rules under Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, are not to in-

fluence food habits, or affect slaughtering business.” The ministry has received several representations asking it to consider alternative views after the notification under Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. The decision is expected to hit export and trade in meat and leather. The rules define cattle as a bovine animal including bulls, bullocks, cows, buffaloes, steers, heifers and calves and camels. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had earlier said that the ban has nothing to do with state laws on cow slaughter and concerns only with the place of sale. Protests have been held in several parts of Tamil Nadu. Several activists of a little known Tamil group were detained in Madurai where they had organised a beef-eating contest.

State BJP crisis: PAC asks central leaders to intervene and save party DIMAPUR, JUN 4 (NPN): With the ongoing crisis within the state BJP failing to end, the Political Affairs Committee (PAC) of the state BJP held an emergency meeting and resolved to urge the Central leadership to intervene at the earliest. In a press note, state BJP PAC convener, Dr. T.M. Lotha said the committee held an emergency meeting in Kohima on June 3 to take stock of the crisis during which several resolutions were adopted and forwarded to the Central leadership. Dr. T.M. Lotha said 10 district presidents had written to the high command to remove the party president within May 30, 2017 failing which they warned to take further action. As the district presidents and youth party leaders have come together and were on a Dharna for removal of the party president, the BJP unit said such a serious development

ahead of the forthcoming general election needed immediate intervention. In this regard PAC requested Central leaders “to immediately come and settle the issue and save the party.” PAC also termed the sacking of nine senior party functionaries as unconstitutional and dictatorial in nature, since it was done so without consulting the state office bearers and party legislators. It said PAC after its last meeting (May 25, 2017) asked the president to review the decision and reinstate the nine members to their original positions citing reasons that were all senior dedicated party workers. However, till today, PAC said the president had failed to comply with the appeal. Therefore, PAC said it had recommended that all nine senior party functionaries be reinstated with immediate effect. Further, PAC pointed out that the president also suspended three senior par-

ty members without any reason and without consulting the office bearers and party legislators, “simply on the pretext of shouting against party leaders, which is totally unfounded and concocted version of the party president.” The PAC has therefore recommended immediate revocation of the suspension order, saying “their participation and contribution in the party is indispensable in view of the forthcoming general election.” The PAC also objected to the decision of the president for issuing an order to shift the party’s head office from Dimapur to Kohima. This was also done without any prior consultations in the State Executive Committee meeting and without any consultations with the party legislators, PAC added. In this regard, PAC has asked that the order be kept in abeyance with immediate effect. (Cont’d on p-8)

Primary teachers neglected, says ANGPTA DIMAPUR, JUN 4 (NPN): All Nagaland Government Primary Teachers Association (ANGPTA) in its emergency meeting on June 2 at Kohima, has taken serious note of the issues pertaining to primary teachers (PTs) irrespective of qualification and nature of appointment. In a statement, media cell of ANGPTA said, PTs consist of more than 60% and considered as the foundation of the students’ career, but had been neglected and deprived of the avenues by the department. It therefore, vowed to fight tooth and nail in the event the members were further deprived of facilities. Also, alleging that some person/ members from various organizations were spreading false propaganda to create “inharmonious atmosphere for their selfish interest”, ANGPTA resolved to initiate stern action against individual/group/association, whoever tries to manipulate the welfare of the primary teachers. It also dismissed the propaganda that the employee would be deprived revision of pay (ROP) if they become

member of ANGPTA. Another issue, taken up at the meeting was the practice of proxy teachers, which the association termed it as illegal and unethical. The association questioned government’s failure to tackle proxy teachers for the past many years, despite of power at its disposal. It therefore, asked the department to initiate necessary action as such practices will have serious implication and will spoil the career of the students. The association has also resolved to cooperate with the department and government in the implementation of various policies and programmes for the welfare of the students and teachers. In this regard, it reminded the government to implement the ANGPTA’s representation in letter and spirit.
