Russian forces. They were held on the border with strong Russian ally Belarus, where a referendum on Sunday approved a new constitution ditching the country’s non-nuclear status at a time when the former Soviet republic has become a launch pad for Russian troops invading Ukraine. Russian-Israeli billionaire Roman Abramovich, owner of Chelsea FC, was in Belarus assisting in Ukraine-Russia negotiations at the request of Kyiv. The talks came as Ukraine’s forces fiercely resist the Russian offensive, a day after President Vladimir

Putin ordered his defence chiefs to put the country's nuclear forces on high alert. Russia’s Central Bank scrambled to shore up the tanking ruble Monday and the US and European countries upped weapons shipments to Ukraine. In addition to sanctions, the US and Germany announced they will send Stinger missiles to Ukraine
among other military supplies. ‘No plans to occupy Ukraine’: As tensions between Russia and Ukraine continue, Russia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzya, while speaking at an emergency session of the UN General Assembly Monday said that Russia has no plans to occupy Ukraine. “The occupation of Ukraine is not part of our plans. The purpose of this special operation is to protect people who have been subjected to abuse and genocide by the Kyiv regime for eight years. For this, it is necessary to demilitarise and denazify Ukraine,” Nebenzya said. Russia uses banned ‘cluster bombs’: Russia appears to have used banned cluster munitions to indiscriminately shell civilian areas in Ukraine's east that had stood up to Vladimir Putin's invasion in what would constitute a war crime.
India may see 4th Covid wave around June: IIT-K study NEW DELHI, FEB 28 (PTI): The fourth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in India may start around June 22 and peak from mid to late August, a modelling study by researchers at the Indian Institute of TechnologyKanpur suggests. The yet-to-be peerreviewed study, recently posted on the preprint repository MedRxiv, used a statistical model to make the prediction, finding that the possible new wave will last for four months. The study led by Sabara Parshad Rajeshbhai, Subhra Sankar Dhar, and Shalabh of IIT Kanpur's Department of Mathematics and Statistics shows that the severity of the fourth wave will depend on the emergence of a possible new Covid variant, and vaccination status across the country. The impact will depend on the various factors like the variant's infectibility, fatality, etc, they said.

NPP state unit rebuts NPCC, NPF statements Need to identify who is who in Naga
DIMAPUR, FEB 28 (NPN): National People's Party (NPP) Nagaland state unit Monday issued a pointby-point rebuttal to the recent statements made by Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) president K Therie and Naga People’s Front (NPF) president Dr.Shürhozelie Liezietsu. Terming as “totally uncalled” the assertion of Therie that NPP’s politics was restricted to Shillong, NPP state unit reminded that NPP was born in Manipur in 1989 contrary to the “popular perception” that it
was born in Meghalaya. It said that NPP became the first party from the Northeast region achieving the status of National party in a matter of few years. NPP said it was the only National party from the North East with a regional spirit. “As such, there is no question of our politics being limited to Shillong or for that matter to any one particular state of India,” NPP said. On Therie’s allegation that NPP “stooge of the BJP” cannot defend or protect the interests of Nagas in the Parliament, NPP state
unit asserted that in a democratic set up any political party can have an alliance with another party. “It does not make the allies stooges of any political party,” NPP said. NPP said that as a National political party it has a separate set of ideologies and framework, which cannot be compromised even though “we may be in a coalition government with any other political party.” NPP stated that it has “never tried to dilute our party’s ideology” with any other party’s ideology, be it BJP or
any other party. On protecting the interests of the Nagas in the parliament, NPP unit said it was the first political party that visited ground zero after the Oting massacre and had been consistently fighting for the rights and justice of the people. NPP said that if it was incapable of guarding the interests of the Nagas, then its leaders, including MP from Meghalaya, Agatha Sangma and the other leaders of the party would not have raised their voices against the Oting incident.
political matter, says NSCN (I-M)
DIMAPUR, FEB 28 (NPN): NSCN (I-M) has urged Naga people to be proactive in identifying “who is who in the Naga political matter” in this critical period of Naga political talks. NSCN (I-M), through its MIP, said people should identify who were the agents that were working for the interests not linked to bringing an honourable Naga solution that was acceptable to both the Nagas and the Central government. It alleged that (Cont’d on p-8) imposters speaking the de-
ceptive language of Naga accord/solution had no respect for national identity of Nagas and were only digging the roads leading to the Naga solution under Indian constitution. It also insisted that the Naga Plebiscite of 1951 that overwhelmingly voted for Naga sovereign identity must not be separated from the final Naga solution. SARS-CoV-2 virus originated in animals in Wuhan market: Studies WASHINGTON, FEB 28 (PTI): The SARSCoV-2 virus, which cause COVID-19, originated in animals and spread to humans in late 2019 at the Huanan Seafood Market in Wuhan, China, two new studies suggest. The first study used spatial analysis to show that the earliest known COVID-19 cases, diagnosed in December 2019, were centered on the Wuhan market. The researchers found that environmen-
tal samples that tested positive for the virus were strongly associated with the vendors selling live animals. "We used the maps in the WHO mission's report on the origin of SARS-CoV-2 to extract latitude and longitude for most of the known COVID-19 cases from Wuhan with symptom onset in December 2019," Michael Worobey, a professor at the University of Arizona, US, tweeted. " We f o u n d t h a t
cases in December were both nearer to, and more centered on, the Huanan market than could be expected… Its epicenter was at the market," said Worobey, who was the author on the both the research papers. A s e c o n d s t u dy found that the two major viral lineages were the result of at least two events in which the virus jumped from animals to humans. The first transmission most likely happened in late November or early
December 2019, and the other lineage was probably introduced within weeks of the first event, the researchers said. These findings define the narrow window between when SARSCoV-2 first jumped into humans and when the first cases of COVID-19 were reported, they said. "As with SARSCoV-1 in 2002 and 2003, SARS-CoV-2 emergence likely resulted from multiple zoonotic events," the authors wrote in the
second research paper. The yet-to-be peerreviewed studies, however, could not identify an animal at the market that spread the virus to humans. "We show that, contrary to what some may have believed, wished to believe or asserted, live mammals susceptible to SARSCoV-2 were present at the Huanan market in the crucial months of November and December 2019," he added. The findings support a report
published last year in The lancet journal which was compiled by two dozen biologists, ecologists, epidemiologists, physicians, public health experts and veterinarians from around the world. The report had concluded that there was no scientifically validated evidence to support the theory that the coronavirus leaked from a laboratory in China, and that peer-reviewed studies strongly suggest that the virus evolved in nature.
Gs convener N Kitovi Zhimomi that the new accord with Government of India should offer a “win-win situation for all” and that “the rule of law must be upheld”, NSCN (I-M) asked whether he really knew what he was speaking about when he said “the rule of law must be respected”. Alleging that when Kitovi had already sold out the Naga issue by accepting Indian constitution, NSCN (I-M) asked him where did his win-win solution stand. (Cont’d on p-8)
