Russia warns of ‘high-precision strikes’, asks Kyiv residents to leave Russia-Ukraine second round talks scheduled today KYIV, MAR 1 (REUTERS/ AP): Russia warned Kyiv residents to flee their homes on Tuesday and rained rockets down on Kharkiv, as Russian commanders who have failed to achieve a quick victory shifted their tactics to intensify the bombardment of Ukrainian cities. Russia’s defence ministry said its forces were planning “high-precision strikes” against Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and the 72nd Center for Information and Psychological Operations (PSO). “We urge Ukrainian citizens involved by Ukrainian nationalists in provocations against Russia, as well as Kiev residents living near relay stations, to leave their homes,” The Guardian quoted Russian news agency Tass as saying, while giving no
U’khand: Naga boy swept away in Gangnahar canal DIMAPUR/KIPHIRE, MAR 1 (NPN): In a delayed report, a 19-year-old student from Nagaland, who was studying in a boarding school in Uttarakhand, was swept away in the Gangnahar canal on Sunday afternoon. The deceased was identified as Anoka K Sumi-- class 11 student (commerce) of Seven Day Adventist Inter College Roorkee (Haridwar), a resident of Nitoi village under Kiphire district. When contacted, Kivika K. Sumi, the elder brother of the deceased, who reached Roorkee, informed Nagaland Post that Anoka and his friend had gone out for haircut on Sunday and while returning they visited the nearby Gangnahar ghat (Ganga river). He accidentally fell into the river and was swept away by the swift current. The friend immediately alerted the college authorities about the incident, the brother said. While thanking the Uttarakhand government, Kivika said the district officials and Disaster Response Force were putting all efforts as the search operation continued till Tuesday evening. According to TOI report, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Jal Police and local police were conducting a search operation to trace the boy.

information about where in the city of 3 million people those targets were located. The warning comes even as both sides are scheduled to meet for the second round of talks on Wednesday (March 2). The first round of talks, on Monday, had failed to produce any tangible results. Ukrainian foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba said Kyiv was ready to talk but would not just follow Russian ultimatums. On Tuesday, Russian strikes pounded the central square in Ukraine's second-
largest city, Kharkiv, and other civilian targets and a 40-mile convoy of tanks and other vehicles threatened the capital. With the Kremlin increasingly isolated by tough economic sanctions that have tanked the ruble currency, Russian troops advanced on Ukraine's two biggest cities on Day 6 of an invasion that has shaken the 21st century world order. In Kharkiv, a strategic eastern city with a population of about 1.5 million, explosions tore through the
region's Soviet-era administrative building and residential areas. Ukrainian President Vo l o d y my r Z e l e n s k y y called the targeted attack on Kharkiv’s main square “frank, undisguised terror”, blaming a Russian missile and calling it a war crime. “Nobody will forgive. Nobody will forget...This is state terrorism of the Russian Federation.” Ro c k e t s t r i k e s o n Kharkiv killed at least 11 people and wounded 35, Ukrainian Interior Ministry
NPCC attacks state govt on NLTP Act
DIMAPUR, MAR 1 (NPN): While opposing the move of the state government to lift the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition (NLTP) Act, Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has said that the government of the day for its failed to enforce the Act. As the Act had failed in its objective, NPCC president K Therie however alleged that the present leadership had always wanted to repeal it and hence had deliberately allowed mafias to transport alcohol all across the State in connivance with check-gates. He said though the mafias supply liquor in truckloads, it was the small entrepreneurs, who ply the trade for their livelihood, that get caught. He mentioned that if the government tracked movement of liquor through
the check-gates for every seized consignment, then the involvement of those that facilitated its travel would be proved. Therie explained that the objective of NLTP was not to just cancel permits and transportation, but to stop the growing alcohol addiction that impacted personal health, future, family, children, society and economy. He assured that, given an opportunity, Congress would correct the addicts through reformatory schools and rehabilitation centres. “We need decent and disciplined living with responsibilities. Children 18 years and above should earn their daily needs. They should not depend upon old parents. Irresponsible children kill their parents through mental torture. Mental health suffer-
ing has no medicine. It only shortens life. Happiness is the only medicine that can cure mental health issues. I wish children remember this and give long life to their parents,” he stated. Mentioning that drugs was a bigger threat, Therie accused BJP of being friendly with drug traffickers, adding that drugs were caught many a times mostly in Gujarat. He said 3,000 kg of heroine was caught at Adani Group-owned Mundra Port in Gujarat that had an estimated value of Rs 23,000 core. He alleged that BJP had a plan to drug those whom it could not win over and was successful in Punjab. Mentioning that the party’s other target would be minorities, he cautioned that the danger could not be ignored.
adviser Anton Herashchenko said. Similar strikes had killed and wounded dozens in the city the previous day. In addition to the strikes on cities, reports have emerged that Moscow has used cluster bombs on three populated areas. If confirmed, that would represent a worrying new level of brutality in the war — and could lead to even further isolation in Russia. The Kremlin denied Tuesday that it has used such munitions and insisted again that its forces only
Will initiate talks with all UG groups in Manipur: Shah IMPHAL, MAR 1 (AGENCIES): Union Home Minister Amit Shah Tuesday pledged to establish peace in Manipur by initiating talks with all underground groups operating in the state. He also asserted that all smuggling activities will come to an end in Manipur, which will be “drug-free” within the next five years. Addressing a poll rally at Heirok in Thoubal district, Shah said “We have shown in Assam and Tripura… where 9,500 youths laid down their weapons and joined the mainstream”, and added that “no youth will go to jail, none will have weapons in their hands, but will join the mainstream.” (Read more on p-4)
have struck military targets — despite evidence documented by AP reporters of shelling of homes, schools and hospitals. Unbowed by Western condemnation, Russian upped their threats of escalation-- days after raising the specter of a nuclear attack. The Russian defence minister vowed Tuesday to press the offensive until it achieves its goals, while a top Kremlin official warned
that the West's “economic war” against Russia could turn into a “real one”. 5,000 Russian soldiers dead or captured: A senior Western intelligence official briefed by multiple intelligence agencies estimated that more than 5,000 Russian soldiers have been captured or killed so far, and that Ukrainian forces have eliminated significant numbers of Russian aircraft and tanks and air defense systems.
Indian student killed in Ukraine
PTI: In the first Indian casualty in the war in Ukraine, a medical student from Karnataka's Haveri district was killed in intense shelling in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv on Tuesday. The victim was identified as Naveen Shekarappa Gyanagoudar, a native of Chalageri in the Haveri district of Karnataka who was studying at a medical college in Ukraine, according to Karnataka Naveen Shekarappa SDMA commissioner Manoj Rajan. India asked the envoys of both Russia and Ukraine to ensure "urgent safe passage" to Indian nationals who are still in Kharkiv and in other cities in the conflict zones. Naveen’s uncle Ujjanagouda said he was killed when he stepped out of his bunker to exchange currency and fetch some food.

Church bodies back NLTP Act
DIMAPUR, MAR 1 (NPN): Phom Baptist Christian Association and Christian Forum Dimapur have appealed to the government to strictly implement the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition Act (NLTP) in letter and spirit. PBCA: Describing the NLTP Act as “a Spiritual Law”, the Phom Baptist Christian Association (PBCA) said that “spiritual law is always virtuous for the citizens.” In a press note, PBCA executive secretary N Tialemba Phom stated that the government and NGO leaders, therefore, needed to respect, value, embrace and preserve “this Spiritual Law (Act) to truly protect us from all harms.” PBCA said that Nagaland state was unique be-
cause of its history, culture, tradition, identity, land and belief system. In the process of emerging Nagaland as unique state, PBCA said Christianity has contributed so much. PBCA said that it was Christianity that introduced “us an era of civilisation in all spheres of life”. The church also said that alcoholism had no place in “our Naga Christian’s belief system”, adding that “this is the way we made ourselves as Christians before God and before the world.” Further, PBCA said that Naga church leaders and all believers have condemned the rise of alcoholism and swore to God that Nagaland would be a dry state. “Swearing No to Alcoholism and declaring Nagaland as a dry State in
the context of multi-religious country is the Unique Spiritual Covenant made between God and Naga believers,” PBCA said. PBCA, therefore, said that nobody should “boldly touch and infringe this Covenant”. Rather, it said that Naga Churches should urge the government to “actively implement NLTP, Act 1989 in Good faith.” CFD: Christian Forum Dimapur (CFD) has resolved to appeal to the state government to implement the NLTP Act, 1989 in letter and spirit. This was decided at a meeting of the forum’s advisers and office bearers here on Monday, CFD chairman Rev. Moses Murry and secretary Rev Fr CP Anto secretary stated in a press note. (Cont’d on p-8)

NEW DELHI, MAR 1 (PTI): Price of commercial LPG, used by hotels and other commercial establishments, was on Tuesday hiked by Rs 105 to its secondhighest level but rates of subsidised gas sold to households remained on freeze. The price of a 19-kg commercial cylinder has been hiked to Rs 2,012 from Rs 1,907, according to price notification from state-owned fuel retailers. This is the second-highest rate, after Rs 2,101 per cylinder in December 2021. LPG rates are revised on the 1st of every month based on the price of benchmark fuel in
the previous month. However, the price of domestic cooking gas LPG, sold to households, has not been changed since October when it rose to Rs 899.50 per 14.2-kg cylinder. The hiatus in those rates came after criticism from the Opposition over prices being hiked by Rs 90 in the previous six months. Just like LPG, petrol and diesel prices too have been on a freeze since early November 2021. It is being speculated that fuel prices will be hiked once assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh and four other states end next week.
DIMAPUR, MAR 1 (NPN): Responding to the recent statements of the NSCN (I-M) accusing its convenor N. Kitovi Zhimomi, of “reediting” the 16-Point Agreement, Working Committee (WC) of Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs) highlighted the role of late Ralengnao Khathing Tangkhul, also called Major Bob Khathing, as the real architect of 16-point agreement that led to formation of Nagaland state. WC, NNPGs through its media cell stated that Bob Khathing possessed
an “out and out Indian military strategist's mindset” although a Naga by blood and who exhibited “a very strong” anti-Naga nationalist stance as a bureaucrat. WC said Bob Khathing was also instrumental in the demarcation of Nagaland state boundary, and also he did all he could to minimize the physical boundary and segregate Nagas in order to fulfil “a new plan taking shape in his mind” after Nagaland statehood. “History clearly says he was a primary member in the committee who finalized
the draft of 16-point Agreement,” WC said, adding that he played a key role in dividing Naga ancestral land into Nagaland, Manipur, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Burma. It said Khathing was inspired by the creation of Nagaland state within the Indian union, carved out from the ancestral land of sixteen indigenous Naga tribes. As the chief secretary of Nagaland in 1967, WC said he was instrumental in the formation of Nagaland Armed Police (NAP) and Naga Regiment. (Full text on p-6)

SCVC reacts to chief Angh’s claims
DIMAPUR: Reacting to the claims made by chief Angh of five Sheanghah villages, Aluh Angh, with regard to the shifting of Longshen EAC headquarters, the Sheanghah Chingnyu Village Council (SCVC) Tuesday clarified that there was no meeting held in 2003 to decide the shifting of Longshen EAC headquarters. In a press release, SCVC chairman C Gangnan and secretary T Ganpong claimed that they have checked up the matter with the chairman of United Council of Sheanghah (UCS) Mankang. A c c o r d i n g t o S C VC, Mankang stated that Aluh Angh’s statement was “false as there was no meeting so far”. Chingnyu and Tangnyu Village) affirmed before the spot verification team to stop the shifting proposal “least it leads unfavorable situation”. With regard to chief Angh’s claim that villages have issued “no objection certificate” for shifting of the present headquarters, SCVC said Sheanghah Chingnyu did not issue any NOC. SCVC said that when it contacted the Sheanghah Wamsa and Sheanghah Mokok village council, they replied that no meeting was held and no NOC was issued by the village council. Meanwhile, SCVC has asserted that the “Angh enjoys the vested powers of his subjects for the wellbeing of his domain”, adding that he alone cannot decide on any matter. When it did not hold any meeting and no decision was taken to support the shifting proposal, the SCVC questioned “Who is leading to disintegration of the village? Who is manipulating the Royal Majesty of Sheanghah?”

Manipur “drug-free” within the next five years,” he said. The Union home minister also criticized Congress party, stating that the then Congress government led by O Ibobi Singh had even failed to provide tap water connection to 5% households. He criticized Congress stating that the party did nothing for the welfare of the people in 15 years of its rule in the state. Only 5 % households get tap water connections all these years. This is the hard evidence, he said. He further claimed that in the last five year rule of the BJP-led coalition government, tap water connections were provided to more than 57% households. Hitting back at the allegation of the Congress over the hike in the prices of goods, particularly on vehicle fuels and LPG, Shah said that people would not forget the artificial price hike in the state due to the frequent bandh and blockade on the national highways. “I would like to remind you Ibobiji that during your tenure the price of LPG shot up to Rs 3000 (a refilled cylinder), Rs 300 per liter of petrol,” he said.

IMPHAL, MAR 1: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah campaigned in Manipur as political parties now focus on electioneering in the second and final phase of the Manipur Legislative Assembly to be held on March 5. Prime Minister Narendra Modi today addressed people of 22 Assembly constituencies virtually where he came down heavily on the Congress which the party considered the only strong rival. Criticizing Congress, Modi said that Manipur was just a haven for corruption for them. (Congress) He said the party kept the state far away from peace and prosperity and did nothing to develop Manipur.
Union home minister Amit Shah felicitated at a BJP poll rally in Manipur’s Thoubal district on Tuesday. (NP) Claiming that people of the state saw the light of development only when the BJP came to power in the state, he said, “Congress was responsible for separatism in the state in the name of hill and valley.” The then Congress government was not focused on development of the state but on looting Manipur, he added. The state was in hands of such leaders who were known to be called ‘Mr 10 per cent’ on the account of their corruption, Modi said

The votes polled are safely stored and secure in the machines, the CEO claimed. However, stray incidents of damaged EVMs were reported and re-poll has been recommended for those polling stations. Manipur has again shown the way with a record voter turnout and voting in a peaceful manner, the CEO added.

According to government records, there are 24,289 Myanmarese people who have taken shelter in Mizoram as on February 12 this year, the chief minister informed the Assembly. The number of Myanmar nationals fleeing to the northeastern state has swollen recently due to renewed clash in the neighbouring country, especially in Chin state. Zoramthanga said that the Myanmarese nationals are provided with food, shelter and other forms of assistance by the state government, NGOs, churches, student bodies and village authorities on humanitarian grounds. He said that the state government has urged the Centre to help the displaced
Zoramthanga nationals but it was not possible for the Central government to do so directly because India is not a signatory to the UN Convention on Refugees. “The Centre assists us and in turn we help the Myanmar nationals,” the chief minister said, adding that his government has sought more help. He further said that the state government is making efforts to ensure that the displaced nationals from Myanmar do not face problems. GUWAHATI, MAR 1 (PTI): The Assam government on Tuesday said it has extended the controversial Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 (AFSPA) in the entire state for six more months with effect from February 28. The act empowers security forces to conduct operations anywhere and arrest anyone without any prior warrant. It also gives a certain level of immunity to the security forces in case of an operation going wrong. “After reviewing the law and order situation in Assam in the past six months, the state government has declared the entire State of Assam as ‘Disturbed Area’ up to 6 (six) months with effect from 28/02/2022, unless withdrawn earlier,” an official release said on Tuesday. The Assam government had last extended the “Disturbed Area” status of the state for another six months with effect from August 28 last year, thereby continuing the application of the AFSPA. The AFSPA was imposed in Assam in November 1990 and has been extended every six months since then after a review by the state government.

He said that this infuriated the candidate’s supporters and a scuffle broke out during which an EVM was damaged. The resulting melee led to polling personnel resorting to firing blank
rounds to control the crowd. Gangmei claimed that the presiding officer filed the complaint at the behest of the BJP candidate. “Last night I met @ DrLamtinthangHk INC candidate-Saitu who had been illegally and unjustly taken into custody at 10am in a brazen act orchestrated by BJP top brass. Finally my colleague got bail around 12:15am. But he was blatantly denied his democratic rights through polling day,” Ramesh tweeted. Ramesh had gone to the police station with Congress supporters.

The student, Naveen Shekarappa Gyanagoudar, was a native of Chalageri in Karnataka’s Haveri district. “Received the tragic news of Indian student Naveen losing his life in Ukraine. My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. “I reiterate, GOI (Gover nment of India) needs a strategic plan for safe evacuation. Every minute is precious,” Rahul Gandhi wrote on Twitter. government to expedite the evacuation of Indians stranded in war-torn Ukraine. “We are deeply saddened by the tragic news of the demise of an Indian student in Ukraine. Our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. We once again urge GoI (Government of India) to ensure the speedy and safe evacuation of our people,” it stated in a tweet. Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra too condoled the death of the student and asked the government to bring back the Indians stranded in
Ukraine as soon as possible. “The news of the death of Indian student Naveen trapped in Ukraine is very sad. My deepest condolences to their families. May God give them courage in this time of sorrow. I request the government to make every effort to bring back all our students as soon as possible,” she tweeted. Expressing sadness over the death, Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala alleged the BJP government at the Centre “has no evacuation plan” and that it has “abandoned” the youth. “Our deepest condolences to the family of the student from Karnataka who has died. This is the tragedy where the BJP Government has no evacuation plan. “The Modi Government has abandoned our young, Prahlad Joshi decries and insults our students in Ukraine. Only photo-op, no action,” he said. He attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for campaigning in Uttar
Pradesh assembly polls and asked whose responsibility is it to bring all Indians stuck in Ukraine back safely. “Modi Ji, What would you say to the family in Karnataka which lost their child due to the lack of sensitivity of your government? “In the midst of Ukraine-Russia war, the lives of around 20,000 Indians are in danger every moment and you are engaged in this (electioneering)? Whose responsibility is it to bring thousands of children back safely,” Surjewala posed. The MEA said the foreign secretary is calling in ambassadors of Russia and Ukraine to reiterate its demand for “urgent safe passage” to Indian nationals who are still in Kharkiv and in other cities which have become conflict zones. “Similar action is also being undertaken by our ambassadors in Russia and Ukraine,” it said. The Kharkiv city is witnessing increasing fighting between the Ukrainian troops and Russian forces.

All buses gutted in the fire belonged to Kaveri Travels. The loss is estimated to be Rs 6 crore. The operator said they had parked buses there due to the drop in demand due to Covid-19 pandemic. The cause of the fire was not known.

normal maximum temperatures are forecast over many parts of western and central India. Minimum temperature expected to be above normal in most parts of northwest and west India. No heat wave is predicted in March in the northern plains. For the plains, a “heat wave” is declared when the maximum temperature is more than 40 degrees Celsius, and at least 4.5 notches above normal. A “severe” heat wave is declared if departure from normal temperature is more than 6.5 degrees Celsius, according to the IMD. The IMD also said India recorded 44 percent more rainfall in the winter season. Heavy rainfall events (15) in the country in February were the lowest in four years, it said, adding that most heavy rainfall events were concentrated in Kerala and Jammu and Kashmir. The country saw 18 events each of heavy rainfall in 2021 and 2020 and 82 in 2019.

BHUBANESWAR, MAR 1 (IANS): The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) led by Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik has made a landslide victory by winning 90 per cent Zilla Parishad seats in the threetier Panchayat elections, whose final result was declared on Tuesday. Out of the total 853 Zilla Parishad (ZP) zones in the state, elections were held on 851 seats and the BJD won 765. Of the remaining two seats, a BJD candidate won one ZP seat uncontested while the election for another seat was contested. So in total, the BJD was able to grab 766 ZP seats. BJD’s principal rival BJP could manage to secure only 42 seats, followed by Congress with 37 seats. Independent candidates won three seats while others got four seats, the State Election Commission said on Tuesday. BJD, the ruling party in Odisha, has gained 290 more seats as compared to its performance in the previous Panchayat polls of 2017.

Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia is leaving for Romania and Moldova, Kiren Rijiju for Slovakia, Hardeep Singh Puri is enroute to Hungary and Gen V.K. NEW DELHI, MAR 1 (PTI): The Congress on Tuesday attacked the government over the rise in prices of commercial LPG and milk and said it will take to the streets if fuel prices are hiked after the assembly elections. Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi said by raising the price of LPG, the government has proved that it has nothing to do with the suffering of people. He suggested that the prices of petrol and diesel could increase next. “By increasing the price of LPG once again, the Modi government has made it clear that it has nothing to do with the sufferings of the common people. Today LPG, tomorrow petrol-diesel,” Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi, using the hashtag “#KiskeAchheDin”. Congress leader Alka Lamba said on the first day of March, milk prices have been raised by Rs 2 each and this has come as a jolt for children and women. She said the commercial LPG cylinder price that

ith likely disruption of services in the form of mass casual leave by medical officers looming large from March 7 to 9, the state government has to arrive at a decision in order to resolve the issue so as to avoid the inconvenience. The medical doctors under the banner of Nagaland In-service Doctors Association (NIDA) had been demanding increase of the superannuation from 60 to 65 but later trimmed it to 62 years. The government reportedly suggested 60 for doctors working as administrators and 62 for doctors on clinical duties. According to NIDA the government had given a written assurance of responding to the demand within a period not extending beyond one year on April 17, 2021. However, as the period has passed ten months, NIDA decided to activate itself in order to have the government take a decision before next April. NIDA’s contention is that separating doctors in administrators and clinical fields was not as easy therefore, has resolved that the superannuation be the same at 62 years. Also according to NIDA their demand for increasing the superannuation is on the premise that there is shortage of medical doctors and that the increase would help tide of the problem. Currently all government employees in Nagaland attain superannuation at 60 or on completion of 35 years of service or whichever is earlier. It may be recalled that the state government had in 1991 reduced the superannuation from 58 to 57 or on completion of 33 years of service. This has led to outrage as the affected employees took the government to court for the arbitrariness. Again, the matter was sparked when in 2007 the government enhanced the age from 57 to 60 years but without length of service. This had brought some cheer to the government servants. However again in 2009 the government fiddled with the matter when it introduced length of service to 35 years and superannuation remaining unchanged at 60. The factor that has led to demand for increase in superannuation in several state was report that the union government’s decision of raising the retirement bar for central government doctors in 2017 from 60 to 65 years. However doctors holding administrative posts would retire at 62. UP has decided to increase superannuation of medical doctors from 60 to 62. On the other hand, Haryana has in fact reduced the superannuation from 60 to 58 in September 2021. In 2016, the Haryana government had increased the superannuation of doctors from 58 to 65 years only for those involved or engaged in clinical duties. Under the 2021 rule, doctors in Haryana who will retire after attaining superannuation at 58 may be re-employed on a yearly basis up to a maximum of 65 years subject to certain criteria. In Andhra Pradesh doctors having PG degree and diploma will retire at 63 years while undergraduates will retire at 60. States like Telangana and West Bengal have also increased the retirement from 60 to 63 only for teaching doctors. Perhaps the state government is placed in a situation of being damned if it will and also damned if it does not keeping in view of the likely response from various state employees associations. Certainly there appears to be no quick cure and little panacea for the ailment.
DailyDevotion The Piercing Question
Do you love Me? —John 21:17 eter’s response to this piercing question is considerably different from the bold defiance he exhibited only a few days before when he declared, “Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You!” (Matthew 26:35; also see Matthew 26:33-34). Our natural individuality, or our natural self, boldly speaks out and declares its feelings. But the true love within our inner spiritual self can be discovered only by experiencing the hurt of this question of Jesus Christ. Peter loved Jesus in the way any natural man loves a good person. Yet that is nothing but emotional love. It may reach deeply into our natural self, but it never penetrates to the spirit of a person. True love never simply declares itself. Jesus said, “Whoever confesses Me before men [that is, confesses his love by everything he does, not merely by his words], him the Son of Man also will confess before the angels of God” (Luke 12:8). Unless we are experiencing the hurt of facing every deception about ourselves, we have hindered the work of the Word of God in our lives. The Word of God inflicts hurt on us more than sin ever could, because sin dulls our senses. But this question of the Lord intensifies our sensitivities to the point that this hurt produced by Jesus is the most exquisite pain conceivable. It hurts not only on the natural level, but also on the deeper spiritual level. “For the Word of God is living and powerful…, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit…”— to the point that no deception can remain (Hebrews 4:12). When the Lord asks us this question, it is impossible to think and respond properly, because when the Lord speaks directly to us, the pain is too intense. It causes such a tremendous hurt that any part of our life which may be out of line with His will can feel the pain. There is never any mistaking the pain of the Lord’s Word by His children, but the moment that pain is felt is the very moment at which God reveals His truth to us.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR WEDNESDAY, MARCH 2, 2022
Post-mortem
World Hearing Day: ‘To hear for life, listen with care’
H
earing loss and deafness are common that it can be found in any region or country. According to the WHO World Report on Hearing, it was estimated that one out of four people would have hearing loss by 2050 and that there is a need to highlight the importance of prevention to reduce hearing loss risk and prevalence. Every year on March 3rd, World Hearing Day is commemorated. It is an event organised by the World Health Organization. This year’s theme is “To hear for life, listen with care” it focuses on the importance and means of hearing loss prevention through safe listening. Many people these days are at risk of hearing loss as a result of the widespread practice of working in a noisy place, listening to audio overhead/earphones, video gaming with headphones and visiting places with amplified music e.g. nightclub, concert or fitness classes regularly and for a longer duration. Noise-induced hearing loss is irreversible, but it is also fully preventable. But if it remains unaddressed, it can negatively impact many aspects of our life, our day to day communication, the development of language and speech in children, cognition, education, and interpersonal relationships. What is Noise? We all know about air pollution and water pollution but are we aware of noise pollution? Noise is also a pollutant and it is known to be dangerous to health. It can affect both our physical and psychological state. When it affects our physical state it can damage our ears, especially the sensory cells in our ears. Ears are the organs that process sounds, enabling the brain to interpret what we are hearing. Sensory cells within our ears help us to listen. Our sensory cells can only take so much daily noise before they become destroyed. Listening to loud sounds over long periods can cause damage which can result in temporary or permanent hearing loss or a ringing sensation in the ear (tinnitus). It can also lead to heart problems, fast breathing, stomach ulcers, high cholesterol and can also affect unborn babies. When it affects the psychological status a person may feel annoyed, irritated and quick to temper, he/she may have difficulty in concentrating and being efficient in work, sleeping and emotional problems could also arise. It may also significantly impact the families and communication partners of those living with hearing loss. Measurement of noise As the weight is measured in grams or kg the sound is also measured in units called decibel (dB). Noise is also measured in dB. This measure takes into account the way the human ear responds to sound. When you visit an audiologist, they would usually measure your hearing level in dB and according to that, the diagnosis is made. A person is said to have normal hearing if his or her hearing thresholds are 20dB or better in both ears. Hearing loss is when the person is not able to hear, as well as, someone with normal hearing. It can affect one or both the ears and can be mild, moderate,
I
Therefore, it is important to be alert to early warning signs of hearing loss: • You have pain or ringing/whistling/bussing sound in the ears (tinnitus). • You have difficulty in hearing high-pitched sounds that is birds singing, doorbells, telephones, alarm clocks. • You have difficulty in understanding speech, especially over the telephone and reporting of speech not being clear • You can’t hear someone more than 2 feet away and need constant repetitions • Difficulty following conversations in noisy environments, such as in restaurants, markets or at social gatherings. Noise-induced hearing loss can also be prevented by adopting safe listening strategies. The term “safe listening” simply refers to a listening style that does not endanger our hearing. Some of the Safe listening behaviours are: 1. We should know which noises can cause damage to our ears and are hazardous. 2. We should always keep our device volume levels to no more than 60% of maximum and use a well-fitted noise cancelling headphones. 3. We should wear earplugs, earmuffs or other protective devices while in a noisy environment. If we are not able to reduce or protect ourselves from the noise, we should move away from the source of noise. 4. We should limit the time spent engaging in noisy activities, and in a noisy area take regular breaks in a quiet area and limit the daily usage of personal audio device. 5. We should monitor our listening levels, that is by using apps to monitor our sound exposure and choosing devices with well built-in safe listening features. 6. We should protect the ear of children who are too young to protect their own. 7. We should make our family, friends and colleagues aware of the hazards of noise. 8. We should have our ear and hearing tested at least once in a year or if you think you might have some hearing loss by an ENT and an Audiologist. Lastly, early detection and intervention can help to alleviate many of the negative effects of hearing loss. For young children and their families, these include specialised education programmes and sign language teaching. Assistive technologies, including hearing aids, cochlear implants, closed captioning, and other devices can also help people with hearing loss of any age. Speech therapy, aural rehabilitation, and other associated therapies may also be beneficial. “Music is everything, and so is your hearing”- Bryan Adams Keneitsolou Koza and Anam Tongsin Audiologist and Speech Language Pathologist CIHSR (Referral Hospital) Source: WHO World Hearing Day
The truth about Sixteen Point Agreement 1960
t is the desire of all Nagas to know as to who actually is the real architect of the sixteen point agreement of 1960 and the Shillong Accord of 1975. The blame game must end and in order to do so, the career and activities of late Ralengnao Khathing Tangkhul, also called Major Bob Khathing, MC, MBE (1912-1990), cannot escape the scrutiny of history. He was Manipur Maharaja’s minister for Hills Administration before it joined the Indian union in 1949. Later he joined the Army as Asst. Commandant in the Assam Rifles and became an Assistant Political Officer in the then North East Frontier Agency (NEFA). He was inducted into Indian Frontier Administrative Service (IFAS) and served as political officer under Tuensang Frontier Division in 1954. As Naga political movement gained momentum, he advised the government for the formation of Village Voluntary Force (VVF) aimed at confronting Naga nationalists using Nagas. He was appointed Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Mokokchung in 1958 and went on to become Chief

This type of hearing loss is acquired gradually. The person is usually unaware until a hearing test is done and especially if only one of the ears is affected. But continued listening at unsafe levels will lead to irreversible hearing loss. Another cause of NIHL could be an extremely loud burst of sounds such as gunshots or explosions which can rupture the eardrum or damage the bones in the Middle ear. This kind of NIHL can be immediate or permanent.
Secretary of Nagaland state in 1967 Ralengnao Bob Khathing Tangkhul, possessed an out and out Indian military strategist’s mindset and although a Naga by blood, he exhibited a very strong antiNaga nationalist stance as a bureaucrat. There was nothing in him, either in words or action, to show he was a Naga. Naga Nationalism, to him, was an abhorrance and a dismissive subject in a Nehruvian mould. On the eve of Nagaland statehood, GoI utilized his experience as a soldier and as an Assistant political officer in NEFA area and also as Indian IFAS officer in the Naga hills, the GoI provided all bureaucratic leverages to him on the Naga political matter. From 1951 till statehood, almost a million Indian military poured into Nagaland and as hundreds of Naga villages turned to ashes, thousands of men, women and children perished in the genocide, the Indian military officer in him did not see human catastrophe occuring right under his eyes. The events of untold misery did not prick his conscience as a Naga. For the act of
brutally suppressing the Naga political movement, the Indian Government awarded him Padma Shri in 1957, the fourth highest civilian award. Bob Khathing Tangkhul was instrumental in the demarcation of Nagaland state boundary. A helicopter was provided by GoI to verify topography around Naga homeland and on many occasions Nagaland state boundary was drawn midair from the helicopter! He did all he could to minimize the physical boundary and segregate Nagas in order to fulfil a new plan taking shape in his mind after Nagaland statehood. History clearly says he was a primary member in the committee who finalized the draft of 16 point Agreement. In short, Bob Kathing Tangkhul played a key role in dividing Naga ancestral land into Nagaland, Manipur, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Burma. Prior to Nagaland statehood, Ino R.C Chiten Jamir, a pragmatic Ao Naga leader, was sent to Ukhrul and other Naga areas to appeal and to invite Naga brothers in Manipur to join Nagaland state.
Meeting after meeting he was flately told that Tangkhuls and other Manipur Nagas were comfortable in the present circumstances under Manipur. Disappointed and dejected the team returned to Nagaland. Naga integration was there for the taking but the opportunity went by since it was rejected by Tangkhul brethren without consulting other Naga communities in Manipur. After playing a pivotal role in the finalisation of 16 point draft agreement, ensuring the newly created Nagaland remained a mere 16,579 sq.kms of the total Naga ancestral homeland. The inauguration of Nagaland state on Dec.1, 1960 did not go down well with the Naga National Council (NNC) and Naga nationalists rejected the 16 point agreement and condemned the NPC. Ralengnao Khathing Tangkhul was inspired by the creation of Nagaland state within the Indian union, carved out from the ancestral land of sixteen indigenous Naga tribes. After Nagaland, he envisioned a dream of a separate Wung Tangkhul state within the Indian union, comprising
of present Ukhrul District and other Naga inhabited areas of Manipur. By 1964, he gave shape to this plan when he called up and convinced a host of young educated Tankhuls to join the Naga political movement to work towards creation of Wung Tangkhul state. Very soon Ino Th. Muivah enrolled in the Naga movement at Viswema, Angami Country in February 1965. Many other graduates, PU qualified and matriculates from Tangkhul tribe sought enrollment in the Naga movement. So much water have flowed down the Dzukou valley since. Today the political narratives have changed but the facts of history will stay. Ralengnao Khathing Tangkhul, the Indian soldier, bureaucrat and diplomat was the real architect of 16 point agreement that led to formation of Nagaland state. As the chief Secretary of Nagaland in 1967, he was instrumental in the formation of Nagaland Armed Police (NAP) and Naga Regiment which further eroded the strength and capability of Naga nationalists. Former comrades fought pitched battles, tribalism became a
powerful tool which crippled the Naga movement. The steep division within NNC led to the signing of the infamous Shillong Accord on 11th November 1975. Here too, as Chairman of Administrative Commission, Nagaland, the Government of India had a faithful servant in Khathing Tangkhul to extract its pound of flesh from the Nagas. From 1950 to 1975, every page of Naga history is written in blood and tears. From Manipur Maharaja’s cabinet in 1948 to post retirement honorary duties in Nagaland, Major Bob Khathing Tangkhul, MC, MBE, Padmashree, Two time winner of Indian Army C-in-C medal winner, chased laurels of Indian Government by exterminating his own people with both sword and pen without any compunction. History is what it is. (This Press release is issued after thorough deliberations with Naga National political leaders of the past, retired Indian bureaucrats and Indian military figures. The poor, the rich and the Covid-19 pandemic in India
nitially, Covid-19 is known as the sickness of the rich as they travel to different places and get infected. Gradually, the poor became the most affected group of people by it. The quick imposition of various restrictions to contain the spread of coronavirus and the lackadaisical of both the state and central governments in tackling poverty makes life miserable for the poor. While the poor people’s life and livelihood are badly affected the rich people have disproportionately amassed wealth. India is not a resource poor country but the available resources are been grabbed by the state to spawn millionaires and billionaires at the expense of mass poverty. The Face of Poverty in India: India claims that it is becoming a super power country globally and that its economy can attain growth of 9 to 10 percent. Amid these tall claims around 80% of Indians do not get enough
food to survive. 43% of Indian children and 40% of women are malnourished. 50% of child deaths are due to malnutrition and 77% of Indians live on less than Rs. 20 a day. In the same vein, the Global Hunger Index compiled by the International Food Policy Research Institute, India ranks 101st out of the 116 countries in 2021. From 1995 to 2021, around 400,000 Indian farmers have committed suicide as they find difficult to adjust with the fast marketised economic system. However, the government has money for the rich corporate sector as it provides tax exemptions and rebates of over Rs. 5 lakhs crores, majorly to the corporate sectors. The latest example of such tax exemption is the tax deductions for Baba Ramdev’s Patanjali Research Foundation Trust for five years (2021-2025). India opened and liberalized its markets by creating reforms, reducing tariff barriers, privatizing their
economies, and, after time, opening up capital markets. This is how millionaires and billionaires are made in India while the masses struggle for daily basic needs. The Misery of the Poor: On March 24, 2020, Modi appeared on television and announced a 21-day lockdown with four hours’ notice. Arundhati Roy said, “A mass migration began - biblical in its scale.” Millions of workers and their families began walking thousands of miles home to their village. On the way, they were beaten by the police, hosed down, killed by trains as they walked on railway tracks, held in containment camps. Over 8,700 people were mowed down on railway tracks in 2020 even though passenger train services were severely curtailed due to the nationwide coronavirus lockdown. Based on the information received from the State Police, 805 people suffered injuries, and 8,733 people died on the railway
track between January 2020 and December 2020. Probably the death of thousands goes unreported or unnoticed. According to the Pew Research Center, the Covid-19 pandemic has had a disproportionately harmful impact on living standards in India, with the sharp economic contraction pushing as many as 7.5 crore people into the ranks of the poor (those who earn $2 or less a day). Unemployment of women rose by 15% from a pre-lockdown level of 18 %, resulting in a loss of India’s GDP of about 8% or `15 trillion. The Fortune of the Rich: During the pandemic, the wealthiest escaped the worst impact of the pandemic while the poor faced joblessness, starvation and death. According to Oxfam Report, Indian billionaires increased their wealth by 35% during the lockdown. Indian billionaires increased their wealth by 35% during the lockdown to `3 trillion.
Mukesh Ambani earned `90 crore an hour during pandemic when around 24% of people in India were making under ` 3,000 a month. Out of these, the rise in fortunes for the top 100 billionaires since the lockdown in March is enough to give every one of the 138 million poorest Indian people a cheque for ` 94,045 each, according to Oxfam’s ‘Inequality Virus Report’. The wealth of the top 11 billionaires during the pandemic could easily sustain the MGNREGS or the Health Ministry for the next ten years. The increase in wealth of Mukesh Ambani alone could keep 40 crore informal workers out of poverty for at least five months, said the report. According to the Hurun India Wealth Report in 2020 there are a whopping 4, 12,000 dollar millionaire households in India. Mumbai lead the list of places with the most number of millionaire-households at 16, 933 closely followed by
New Delhi- 16,000. There is a massive gap in wealth distribution among Indians. Anna Marriott, a member of The People’s Vaccine Alliance said that the pharmaceutical industry’s monopoly Covid-19 vaccines had generated a massive increase in wealth for a handful of people in the world. The global push to develop a vaccine for Covid-19 has spawned nine new “vaccine billionaires” who have amassed a combined net wealth of $19.3 billion. Eight existing billionaires, who have extensive portfolios in the Covid-19 vaccine pharma corporations have seen their combined wealth increased by $32.2 billion. The Indian healthcare and pharmaceutical sector saw the emergence of seven new billionaire promoters in 2020. India now has 17 billionaire promoters in the sector, up from 10 last year. Z. K. Deaths linked to PM2.5 pollution in India BSP candidates decided in Shah’s room: SBSP chief increased by 2.5 times in 2 decades: Report
Om Prakash Rajbhar in an apparent reference to the RSS headquarters in Nagpur. The SBSP had contested the 2017 polls in alliance with the BJP. It is now in alliance with the SP to take on the BJP. Asked about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s accusation against the Samajwadi Party of supporting terrorists, he instead took a dig at the saffron party, saying if it aligns with Mehbooba Mufti it is fine, but when the SP-led alliance talks about rights of Muslims, it is wrong. Asked whether parties such as the BSP could play a spoiler for their alliance, Rajbhar said, “What do I say…people are not even taking notice of parties such as the Congress and BSP.” People have made up their mind to throw the BJP out of power and the only alternative is the SP-led coalition, he said.
JEE-Main first phase from April 16-17, second phase scheduled from May 24-29 institutions, and institutions and universities funded and recognised by participating state governments. It is also an eligibility test for JEE (Advanced), which is conducted for admission to IITs. Paper two is conducted for admission to B.Arch and B.Planning courses. “The applications for JEE-Main 2022 will start from today, March 1, and the last date to fill the JEE Main 2022 application form for the first session is March 31, 2022. The exam will be held in Assamese, Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu in addition to Hindi, English, and Gujarati,” an official
said.
“No correction facility will be given at any stage under any circumstances. A provision has been explored for cross-checking of the photograph in real-time during filling in the online application form. There will be negative marking for both section A (multiple choice questions) and section B (numerical value). The candidate cannot apply for both sessions together,” the official added. Last year, the exam was conducted four times to offer flexibility to students and a chance to improve their scores. The first phase was held in February and the second in March.
in police station when he or she goes there to complain, FIRs are not being lodged,” Rajbhar claimed. The law and order that they talk about is only on TV and papers, it is in “a bad shape” on the ground, he alleged. In a public meeting here on Monday, Rajbhar said the stray cattle issue had become a headache for farmers but the BJP government did not bother about it. He elaborated on his alliance promise to ensure that cattle would be well taken care of in ‘Goshalas’ and not venture into fields. The SBSP chief said he had first hand experienced how the BJP “duped” people, including his party, by the promise of ‘Achche Din’. He also accused the BJP leaders of dealing only in ‘jumlas’. The SBSP is contesting 18 seats in alliance with the SP. Rajbhar himself is in fray from Zahoorabad in Ghazipur district of eastern Uttar Pradesh facing a triangular contest from Kalicharan Rajbhar of the BJP and Shadab Fatima of the BSP. Poorvanchal will go to the polls in the last two phases on March 3 and March 7. The results will be declared on March 10.
NEW DELHI, MAR 1 (PTI): Deaths attributable to PM2.5 pollution in India have increased by 2.5 times over the last two decades, according to a new report by the Centre for Science and Environment. The report released by Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav on Tuesday said India accounted for one out of every four deaths due to air pollution in 2019. Data collated by green think-tank Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), and represented in its “State of India’s Environment Report”, showed that 6.67 million people died due to air pollution in the world.

Deaths attributable to ozone in India has increased by 2.9 times -- from 43,200 in 1990 to 1,68,000 in 2019, it said. ACCUSES SECTIONS OF INDIAN MEDIA OF UNDESIRABLE NARRATIVE
NEW DELHI, MAR 1 (PTI): Former Turkish Airlines chairman Ilker Ayci on Tuesday said he has declined the Tata Group’s offer to be the chief executive officer and managing director of Air India as “some sections of the Indian media” have attempted to “colour” his appointment in an undesirable manner. Ayci is considered to be close to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, an ally of Pakistan. RSS-affiliate Swadeshi Jagran Manch had last Friday told PTI that the govern-
Ilker Ayci ment should not give clearance to the appointment of Ayci, the chief executive officer (CEO) and managing director (MD) of Air India, “keeping in view national
security”. Tata Sons had on February 14 announced the appointment of Ayci as the CEO and MD of recentlyprivatised Air India. “Since the announcement, I have been carefully following news in some sections of the Indian media attempting to color my appointment with undesirable colors,” Ayci said in a statement. “As a business leader who has always prioritized professional credo and more importantly, the happiness and well being of my family above all else, I have come the conclu-

NEW DELHI, MAR 1 (PTI): The JEE-Main’s first phase will be conducted in April while the second phase is scheduled in May, officials of the National Testing Agency (NTA) said on Tuesday. The first phase of the engineering entrance exam will be conducted from April 16 to 21 and the second phase, from May 24 to 29, they said. The Joint Entrance Examination-Main (JEEMain) comprises two papers. Paper one is conducted for admission to undergraduate engineering programmes -- BE and B.Tech -- at NITs, IIITs and other centrally-funded technical

They (the BJP) only spread hatred,” he alleged. On Yogi Adityanath’s statement that it was a 80 per cent versus 20 per cent election, Rajbhar said, “We talk about 85-15”-- a reference to the backward community. Asserting that it was turning out to be a “nocontest” with the BJP, he exuded confidence that his party in alliance with SP and other partners, will form the next government in the state with full majority. “Be it Ballia, Mau, G h a z i p u r, A m b e d k a r Nagar, Azamgarh, the BJP will not open its account here. I have been moving around in all mandals, the people of the state want change,” Rajbhar said. He also countered Adityanath’s statement that there had been a vast improvement in the law and order situation in the state. “The law and order is so good that in Hathras the body of a girl was set afire with petrol, following her rape. A trader was killed in a hotel in his (Adityanath) own district,” he said. “Any Dalit, oppressed, deprived is being beaten up

MUBARAKPUR (UP), MAR 1 (PTI): The names of Bahujan Samaj Party candidates were decided in Home Minister Amit Shah’s room and the party is fighting the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls with an aim to help the BJP, alleges SBSP chief Om Prakash Rajbhar, while cautioning people against voting in favour of the Mayawati-led party. The Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party (SBSP) chief also slammed Yogi Adityanath over his repeated bulldozer jibes, saying “will put his bulldozer on pokland (machine), and send it back to his home”. In an interview with PTI during his hectic campaign schedule in the Poorvanchal region, Rajbhar said people have made up their mind for a change of government, and expressed confidence that the Samajwadi Party-led alliance of which his party is a part will get a clear majority. On claims made in some quarters that his party may again join hands with the BJP after the polls, Rajbhar said the BJP people are “the biggest liars”. “They are trained in Nagpur to lie,” he alleged,
Asserting that the BSP is fighting polls with an aim to help the BJP form government, he alleged that BSP candidates are decided at Shah’s behest, in his room and only given the symbol in the BSP office. He cautioned people against voting in favour of the Mayawati-led party. Talking about the major issues that people would keep in mind while casting their votes, Rajbhar said a big issue was stray cattle, followed by unemployment. He highlighted that the SP-SBSP alliance has promised about 300-unit free electricity, free medical facilities to the poor and a caste census within six months, among other things. “People have faith in us. We talk about rights and so people are with us,” he asserted. Stressing that “change is in the air”, Rajbhar said that in the whole of Uttar Pradesh, people are fed up of inflation, corruption, “goonda raj” and the stray cattle issue. The response of the people is there for everyone to see and that is the feeling prevailing in all parts of UP, the SBSP chief said. He said the BJP was talking about terrorism but not about basic things such as food, shelter, clothing,

The extract proved as effective as a preventive drug for infection and also decreased virus replication and spread after infection. “The next step in our research is to identify the specific components in Neem bark extract that are antiviral. Because these components bind to various regions of SARS-CoV-2, we believe that it will be effective on emerging variants with spike mutations,” said Nagel. “We will then determine the formulation of dosage for an antiviral drug to treat coronavirus infections,” she said. The findings could guide new antiviral therapeutic efforts to combat the ongoing pandemic, while holding out the promise for treating new coronavirus strains, the researchers added.

The spike protein is used by the SARS-CoV-2 virus to enter and infect cells. Nagel’s lab at the University of Colorado tested the Neem bark extract in SARS-CoV-2 human lung cells.

KYIV, MAR 1 (AGENCIES): The number of people fleeing the Russian invasion of Ukraine has surged to more than half a million and at least 102 civilians have been killed since Moscow’s troops entered the country, according to the United Nations, reports Al Jazeera. “More than 500,000 refugees have now fled from Ukraine into neighbouring countries,” UN
High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi said on Monday. UN officials said at least 102 civilians had been killed as of Monday. Sergiy Kyslytsya, Ukraine’s permanent representative to the United Nations, placed the death toll at 352, including 16 children. Long lines of cars and buses were backed up at checkpoints at the borders of Poland, Hungary,
Slovakia, Romania and non-EU member Moldova as civilians continued to flee Russia’s assault. Others crossed the borders on foot, dragging their possessions away from the war and into the security of the European Union. The latest and still growing count of civilians fleeing the conflict had 281,000 people entering Poland, more than 84,500 in Hungary, about 36,400
in Moldova, more than 32,500 in Romania and about 30,000 in Slovakia, UNHCR spokeswoman Shabia Mantoo said. The rest were scattered in unidentified other countries, she added. There were reports that some African people fleeing Ukraine faced racism and discrimination at the border with Poland from officials on both sides. Thousands of young African students are studying in Ukraine, mostly from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, Ethiopia, Somalia and other countries, drawn by the high standard of education and low costs. Some reported being rudely stopped from crossing the border for days despite the cold and their lack of food or other supplies, even as officials let white refugees enter the country. Nigerian foreign minister Geoffrey Onyeama said he received reports of “Ukrainian border guards hindering the exit of Nige-
rian citizens”. Ukrainian foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba said Ukrainian border guards have been instructed to allow all foreigners to leave. Ghanaian foreign minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey said in a statement on Monday that students from Ghana had not faced any problems at the border. She said 38 of the 220 Ghanaians who had left Ukraine had crossed the Polish border without hindrance. However, more than 460 people were still on their way out of Ukraine to neighbouring countries. Polish officials told the German news agency DPA that accusations against their officers were “nonsense”. “The officers of the Polish Border Guard help all people fleeing the war zone in Ukraine. Nationality or citizenship do not matter,” they said.
NEW DELHI, MARCH 1 (IANS): In the Sumy region of Ukraine, military equipment of the Russian forces is riding through the villages under white flags while shooting civilians, Ukrainian officials have claimed. Head of the Sumy Regional Military Administration Dmytro Zhyvytskyi said, “Urgently, the village of Nizy in the Sumy region, enemy vehicles are driving through the village of Nizy and its environs! The enemy travels through the villages with white flags and shoots civilians!” Ukrainska Pavda reported. Later, the head of the Sumy Regional Military Administration said that a column of enemy vehicles was travelling through Sumy, and there were airstrikes too. nadyi Latuga. No additional details are available as of now, but the head of the Administration showed photos and videos of Russian armoured vehicles driving on the streets of Kherson. There are reports that the Belarusian troops have entered the territory of the Chernihiv Region. Spokesperson of the Regional Territorial Defence Forces Department “North” Vitaliy Kyrylov confirmed the information that the
Chernihiv Region has been penetrated by Belarusian forces, Ukrainska Pravda reported. Earlier on Tuesday, president of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko stated that Belarus had no plans of participating in Russia’s war against Ukraine. As a result of artillery bombardment in the centre of Kharkiv, the building of the Regional State Administration was partially destroyed. Rescuers continue to pull people out.

Canada to send Ukraine anti-tank weapons: PM
Justin Trudeau
OTTAWA, MARCH 1 (IANS): Canada will send anti-tank weapons and upgraded ammunition to support Ukraine, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Monday at a press conference. “Yesterday, we announced that we would be sending new shipments of military supplies, including body armour, helmets, gas masks, and night-vision goggles,” said Trudeau, Xinhua news agency reported. “Today, we are announcing that we will be supplying Ukraine with
anti-tank weapons systems and upgraded ammunition.” The Canadian government plans to prohibit all imports of Russian crude oil, Trudeau added. This is in addition to previous shipments of lethal and non-lethal equipment to Ukraine. The Canadian government is also carrying out a series of sanctions on Russia, including prohibiting Canadian financial institutions from engaging in any transaction with the Russian Central Bank and closing off Canadian airspace to Russian planes.

Billionaire Fridman, who was born in western Ukraine, said that the conflict was driving a wedge between the two eastern Slav peoples of Russia and Ukraine who have been brothers for centuries, according to the Reuters report. “I was born in Western Ukraine and lived there until I was 17. My parents are Ukrainian citizens and live in Lviv, my favourite city,” Fridman wrote in the letter, Reuters reported.
Man kills three daughters, himself at California church SACRAMENTO (US), MAR 1 (AP): A man shot and killed his three daughters, their chaperone and himself during a supervised visit with the girls Monday at a church in Sacramento, California, authorities said. Deputies responding to reports of gunfire around 5 p.m. found five people dead, including the shooter, at the church in the Arden-Arcade neighborhood, said Sgt. Rod Grassmann with the Sacramento County Sheriff ’s Office. The victims included three girls ages 9, 10 and 13, Grassmann said. The shooter was estranged from his daughters’ mother, who had a restraining order against him, Sheriff Scott Jones said. Investigators believe the shooting happened during a supervised visit with the children and that the fourth victim was their chaperone, Jones said.
Former top US defense officials visits Taiwan amid tension
TAIPEI, MAR 1 (AP): A delegation of former U.S. defense officials landed Tuesday afternoon in Taiwan in a sign of stepped-up communication between the sides amid the looming threat from China. Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mike Mullen is leading the five-person delegation that is scheduled to meet with President Tsai Ingwen and other top officials during the two-day visit. Mullen and the delegation were greeted at Taipei’s Songshan Airport by Taiwan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Joseph Wu, who bumped elbows with the group members. Tsai’s office said the delegation had been ap-
pointed by President Joe Biden and that the visit would permit “an in-depth exchange of views on Taiwan-U.S. cooperation issues in various fields.” Taiwan hopes the sides will “continue to deepen the steady development of Taiwan-U.S. relations, continue to jointly maintain regional peace and stability, and continue to jointly contribute to global peace and prosperity,” the office said in a statement. Separately, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was due to arrive in Taiwan on Wednesday. Pompeo, who formerly led the Central Intelligence Agency, will also meet with Tsai and address a forum prior to his departure Saturday, according to
the Foreign Ministry. “Former secretary of state Pompeo’s visit displays fully U.S. bipartisan backing for its rock solid’ support” for Taiwan, the ministry said. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has drawn fresh attention to China’s threat to use force to annex self-governing democratic Taiwan, which it claims as its own territory. Circumstances are very different, however: Taiwan lies 160 kilometers (100 miles) across the turbulent Taiwan Strait from mainland China and enjoys strong support from the U.S., which is legally bound to ensure the island can defend itself and treat all threats to it as matters of “grave concern.”
S E O U L , M A RC H 1 (IANS): South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Tuesday expressed his concern about a “new Cold War” and nationalism seeking to gain hegemony by force, as Russia pressed ahead with its invasion of Ukraine despite global condemnation and sanctions. In a speech marking Korea’s 1919 nationwide uprising against Japan’s 1910-45 colonial r ule, Moon emphasised that South Korea should have the power to prevent itself from being pushed around by global powers, Yonhap news agency reported. “The international order is fluctuating amid the Covid crisis,” Moon said. “State-centered nationalism, which seeks to gain hegemony by force, is also raising its head again. Concerns over a new Cold War are on the rise as well.” Moon said that the lesson from the spirit of the 1919 uprising “gives us today is that we should have the power to lead our history without being pushed around by an international order centered on powerful countries.” Moon’s speech came a day after South Ko-

rea said it will ban exports of strategic items to Russia and join international sanctions to exclude major Russian financial institutions from a key global payment system to increase pressure over Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine. The remarks were seen as a veiled condemnation against Russia’s military action. Moon said South Korea is “imbued with the spirit” of the 1919 uprising, “which resisted violence, discrimination and injustice, and rejected a hegemonic international order.” “We will never again experience that pain from one hundred years ago,” Moon said. “We will safeguard the survival and raise the pride of all Koreans through peace and prosper in peace.”

Kristen Stewart and Andrew Garfield won awards for their performances in ‘Spencer’ and ‘Tick, Tick … Boom!’, respectively. “2021 was a year full of change in the world of cinema with a limited number of films being released theatrically and a seismic shift in the film landscape, which created an opportunity for many films to be seen by audiences worldwide,” said HCA founder Scott Menzel. “The Hollywood Critics Association is honoured to bestow this year’s awards to some of the best in filmmaking as we hopefully move forward with a new normal and can continue to celebrate the film watching experience in theaters and at home. arner Bros. has announced that it has halted its plans to release the Robert Pattinson-starrer, ‘The Batman’. in Russia. The DC adaptation was set to release in the country on Friday (March 4). “In light of the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, WarnerMedia is pausing the release of its feature film ‘The Batman’ in Russia,” a spokesperson for the company said in a statement quoted by ‘Variety’ in its report. “We will continue to monitor the situation as it evolves. We hope for a swift and peaceful resolution to this tragedy.” Later on Monday evening (U.S. Pacific Time), Sony Pictures also paused its plans to release ‘Morbius’, its upcoming solo film for the Marvel antihero, and all other upcoming theatrical releases in Russia. “Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who have been impacted and hope this crisis will be resolved quickly,” a Sony Pictures Entertainment spokesperson said, according to ‘Variety’. Warner Bros. and So-
ny’s decisions to halt the rollout of their respective superhero films in Russia followed an announcement by Disney to pause its own theatrical releases in that country, beginning with Pixar’s ‘Turning Red’. The animated film was set to premiere on March 10 in Russia. With a production budget pegged at $200 mil-
lion, ‘Variety’ noted, ‘The Batman’ will have to rely on overseas audiences to firmly supplant itself as a box office success story. “Russia generally isn’t a make-or-break territory for the success of Hollywood releases, but there is still a sizable market for a film like ‘The Batman’,” Variety said. Song named Cameroon coach on ‘orders of country’s president’
Rigobert Song
LO N D O N, M A R 1 (AGENCIES): Former Liverpool defender Rigobert Song has been confirmed as the new Cameroon head coach on the orders of the country’s president, Paul Biya. The 45-year-old replaces Toni Conceicao, who led the national team to a third-placed finish at January’s Africa Cup of Nations. Song is the country’s most capped player, making 137 appearances for the Indomitable Lions. A statement said Cameroon needed “a new breath”. “On very high instructions from the President of the Republic, the coach of the men’s
national football team, Mr Antonio Conceicao, has been replaced by Rigobert Song,” Cameroon’s sports minister Narcisse Mouelle Kombi said. “The Cameroonian Football Federation (Fecafoot) is invited to take the necessary measures for a rapid and harmonious implementation of these very high directives.” The appointment would be unusual because Fifa rules require any member association to be independent and avoid any form of political interference. Conceicao had led Cameroon to World Cup qualifying play-offs and they will play Algeria in a two-legged tie in March for a place at Qatar 2022. Song, who also played for West Ham in England and had spells in France, Italy, Germany and Turkey during his playing career, also featured at four World Cups and won the 2000 and 2002 Africa Cup of Nations titles.

It mattered little as Jamieson (12) picked out Kagiso Rabada in the deep two balls later for Jansen’s third scalp as the home side were hanging on at 201/8. Tim Southee and Neil Wagner held on for a short while, until Rabada returned to the attack to claim Southee. A brief spell of rain saw an early tea, but things soon cleared up and Maharaj trapped Matt Henry (0) in front to make sure South Africa claimed the series-levelling win. BRIEF SCORES: South Africa 364 and 354/9 decl beat New Zealand 293 and 227 (Devon Conway 92, Tom Blundell 44; Kagiso Rabada 3/46, Marco Jansen 3/63, Keshav Maharaj 3/75) by 198 runs.

LONDON, MAR 1 (IANS): England opener Jason Roy confirmed on Tuesday that he will not be playing for his franchise Gujarat Titans in this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL) to spend some “quality time” with his family. Earlier, a report had said that Roy had pulled out of the tournament “citing the challenge of staying in the tournament bubble for an extended period”. The 31-year-old Roy, who was signed by the Titans for his base price of Rs two crore at the IPL mega auction barely a fortnight ago, had informed the franchise of his decision to quit last week, a report in espncricinfo said on Tuesday. Later, the cricketer took to Instagram to convey the decision to his fans.
Jason Roy
“Hi everyone, especially the Gujarat Titans fans and squad. It’s with a heavy heart I have decided to pull out of this year’s tournament. I want to thank the management and the captain Hardik (Pandya) for putting your faith in me and picking me in the auction.
“However, with everything going on in the world over the last 3 years it’s added up and taken its toll on me. I feel it’s only right I spend some quality time with my family. As well as spending time working on myself and my game over the next couple of months leading into a very busy year. I will be following each game of the Titans and backing them to lift the trophy in their first year of the tournament,” wrote Roy. “Thank you everyone for the continued support and I hope you can all respect and appreciate my decision,” added Roy. The report said that the Titans are yet to finalise a replacement. Roy had played for SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) in IPL 2021.

as ‘suspended’ gymnast
Dipa Karmakar NEW DELHI, MAR 1 (PTI): Indian gymnast Dipa Karmakar is currently identified as “suspended” in the International Gymnastics Federation’s (FiG) website, a development that has left the national body flummoxed which says there has been no official communication from the world body. Among the various Indian gymnasts listed in the FIG website, the 28-yearold Karmakar is marked as “suspended” while the others are shown as “active” against their respective names. The ‘biography’ section of the athletes in the FIG website also shows Karmakar as “suspended” gymnast. There was no immediate clarity on what the “suspended” status meant for Karmakar, who rose into limelight after her stupen-
dous fourth-place finish in the vault event in the 2016 Rio Olympics. She has not been competing since 2019. The Gymnastic Federation of India is clueless about the development. “We have not received any communication from the FIG regarding Dipa’s suspension. I don’t know what is the reason or whether it is true. There has been no communication so let’s wait,” GFI president Sudhir Mittal told PTI. “Unless there is any communication from the FIG I won’t be able to comment anything.” Karmakar herself, who is currently at her home in Agartala, and her coach Bisheshwar Nandi did not respond to calls. Another official of the GFI said that “suspended” status could be due to other issues, not related to doping violation.

NEW DELHI, MAR 1 (IANS): With just few weeks left for the 2022 Indian Premier League to kickstart, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) is yet to announce their captain of the season. However, if sources are to be believed, senior batter Faf Du Plessis is the front-runner to
lead the side. Notably, Virat Kohli had announced his decision to quit RCB captaincy at the end of IPL 2021. And since then there have been discussions among cricket fanatics about who could fit in Kohli’s shoes. After the mega auction, Faf, Glenn Maxwell and Dinesh Karthik’s names
started doing the rounds. However, Maxwell’s availability in the season, because of personal commitments, is in doubt. So the franchise is likely to go for either Faf or Karthik. Karthik has played for RCB in 2015 and has led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the past. Whereas,
Faf has a tremendous experience of leading South Africa and his past batting record with Chennai Super Kings is also phenomenal. “We will announce that name real soon. Discussions are on as we have good options with us,” an RCB source close to the development said. Talking about the other nine teams, they have already appointed their skippers. Interestingly, out of nine captains (named so far), eight are Indians. World Cup ban, refusal to play Russians: Sport reacts to invasion of Ukraine PARIS/NEW DELHI, MAR 1 (AFP/AGENCIES): Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has sparked widespread reaction in the sports world, with the country booted out of this year’s World Cup and the IOC calling for a global sporting ban. A look at some of the main developments: Russia is expelled from the 2022 World Cup after being suspended from all international competitions, FIFA and UEFA announce in a joint statement. The decision also affects Russian clubs in European tournaments. The Russian men’s team was due to play in qualifying play-offs in March for the World Cup in Qatar later this year, while its women’s side had qualified for the European Championship in England, to be held in July. The Polish FA had previously insisted they would not play Russia in a World Cup play-off semifinal. Poland were due to play in Moscow on March 24, with the winners scheduled to face Sweden or the Czech Republic, who had also said they would boycott any game against Russia. U E FA a l s o a nnounces that it is ending its partnership with Russian state energy giant Gazprom,
which was believed to have been paying around 40 million euros ($45 million) a year in a deal due to run until 2024. Saint Petersburg were stripped as hosts of UEFA’s Champions League final set for May 28. The game has been switched to the Stade de France in Paris. At Wembley on Sunday, Chelsea skipper Cesar Azpilicueta and Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson carried flowers in Ukraine’s yellow and blue colours onto the pitch before kickoff in the English League Cup final. One supportive banner in Ukraine’s blue and yellow colours read “You’ll never walk alone” in reference to Liverpool’s anthem. On Saturday, Chelsea’s billionaire Russian owner Roman Abramovich said he was handing over the “stewardship and care” of the Premier League club to the trustees of its charitable foundation. In his statement, there was no mention of the crisis in Ukraine. The International Olympic Committee urges sports federations and organisers to exclude Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials from international events. Milosevic and South Africa under apartheid rule as major sporting pariahs. Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina becomes the first tennis player to refuse to play a Russian. The former world number three says she will not face opponents from Russia or Belarus. She had been due to face Russian Anastasia Potapova in Monterrey on Tuesday. At the Dubai ATP event last week, Russia’s Andrey Rublev marked his semi-final win over Hubert Hurkacz by signing the camera lens on court with the message, “No war please”. The Russian Grand Prix, scheduled for September 25, was cancelled,
a day after defending world champion Max Verstappen and four-time champion Sebastian Vettel publicly declared their opposition to driving in the race. American Formula One team Haas decided not to sport the Russian colours of its title sponsor Uralkali during the last day of preseason testing in Barcelona. The International Ice Hockey Federation suspends all Russian and Belarusian national teams and clubs from its competitions until further notice. It also strips Russia of the hosting rights for the 2023 junior world championships. Boxing’s four major sanctioning bodies -- the
International Boxing federation, World Boxing Council, World Boxing Association and World Boxing Organization -- said in a joint statement they will not sanction bouts in Russia. “Just as the world claims for cease of fire, our organizations have decided to not sanction any boxing championships in Russia,” they said. Russian President Vladimir Putin was suspended as honorary president of the International Judo Federation (IJF). Putin, an accomplished judoka who was awarded an eighth dan in 2014 -- one of the highest levels in the sport, had been honorary president since 2008.
Ukrainian fencers withdrew from the world championships in Cairo to avoid a match with Russia. The male Ukrainian team, dressed in the yellow and blue of their national flag, downed their swords and picked up signs to protest. “Stop Russia! Stop the war!,” the signs read, written in English. “Save Ukraine! Save Europe”. Rugby’s world governing body banned Russia and Belarus from all international rugby “until further notice”. Russia’s membership of World Rugby was also suspended indefinitely, meaning the country’s slim hopes of qualifying for next year’s World Cup in France are over. The Badminton World Federation (BWF) strengthened within a matter of hours their measures against Russia and Belarus having originally cancelled all sanctioned tournaments in Russia and Belarus they announced a ban on athletes and officials representing the two countries from participating at tournaments sanctioned by the world federation. Putin like in other sports has had his personal award the FINA Order withdrawn by the governing body. However, FINA the governing body stopped
short of barring all Russians and Belarusians competing saying they could be “accepted only as neutral athletes or neutral teams.” World Taekwondo said Tuesday they were stripping Vladimir Putin of an honorary black belt, as Russia’s attack on Ukraine goes against the sport’s motto: “Peace is more precious than triumph”. The body also said no Russian or Belarusian national flags or anthems will be displayed and played at events, nor will any future events be organised in the two coun-
tries.
Russian and Belarus ice skaters have been barred from all competitions by the International Skating Union (ISU). Russia is a powerhouse in ice skating most recently winning six medals -- two of them gold -- at the Beijing Winter Olympics. The blanket ban on athletes competing also includes short track and speed skating. Russia has been stripped of hosting the men’s Volleyball World Championships in August and September by the Inter-
India’s football friendly versus Belarus cancelled
India’s football friendly against Belarus later this month has been called off as a consequence of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The decision comes on the back of the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) suggestion that athletes and officials from Russia and its close ally, Belarus, be isolated from the sporting arena, The Indian Express reported. India were scheduled to play two international friendlies this month, against Bahrain on March 23, followed by Belarus on March 26. Indian players had termed the matches as ‘huge opportunities’ with an eye on the Asian Cup qualifiers, to be played in June. Both matches were to be played in Manama. The All India Football Federation (AIFF) secretary-general Kushal Das said they will instead try and schedule two matches against Bahrain, who are ranked 91 in the world. “Since Belarus has been suspended, we can’t play them,” Das told The Indian Express. “We have a match with Bahrain so we are trying to see if we can organise two matches with them.” Late Monday night, FIFA suspended Russia from international football, including this month’s World Cup qualifier.
