Correspondent
KO H I M A , M A R 1 9 (NPN): Nagaland Governor, Prof. Jagdish Mukhi was optimistic that the longcherished solution to the vexed Naga political issue would soon become a reality and a new era of peace and prosperity would begin in the State. In his maiden address to the eleventh session of 13th Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA), which began on Saturday, Governor Mukhi congratulated and praised all legislators for coming together to form an all-party government-United Democratic Alliance (UDA), to pursue an early solution of the Naga political issue, giving one of the finest illustrations of everyone putting the interest and welfare of people and the State above anything else. He acknowledged the government for putting efforts constantly to improve
people’s lives by providing better public services, development and more opportunities for livelihood. He said the voice of the people for an early settlement of the Naga political issue was heard, adding that he was aware of the significant positive developments that had taken place in the past few years. He claimed that the government had been making every endeavour as a facilitator in the peace process so that all negotiating parties were able to appreciate each other’s position and arrive at a solution that was honourable, acceptable and inclusive. Japan to invest Rs 3.2 lakh cr in India over next 5 years: PM
NEW DELHI, MAR 19 (PTI): In a big-ticket move, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Saturday announced an investment target of five trillion yen (Rs 3,20,000 crore) in India over the next five years after holding talks with his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi on a wide range of issues, including the Ukraine crisis. The two sides inked six agreements providing for the expansion of bilateral cooperation in a range of areas, besides firming up a separate clean energy partnership. At a joint media briefing, Modi said deepening India-Japan ties will not only benefit the two countries but will help in encouraging peace, prosperity and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. I n h i s c o m m e n t s, Kishida said the situation in Ukraine figured in the talks and described the Russian attack on that country (Cont’d on p-8) as a serious development

that has shaken the roots of international order. “We discussed the situation in Ukraine. The Russian attack on Ukraine is a very serious matter that has shaken the basis of the international system. We need to approach the matter with a strong resolve,” Kishida said. “I told Modi that onesided efforts to change status quo by force can’t be allowed in any sector. We both agreed on the need for a peaceful solution to all conflicts on basis of international law,” he added. Referring to bilateral trade ties, he said Japan has
an investment target of five trillion yen (Rs 3,20,000 crore) in India over the next five years. “We have announced that in the next five years, we will invest five trillion yen in India and we will further strengthen our cooperation,” Kishida said. The announcement follows the investment promotion partnership of 2014 when both sides had agreed for Japanese investment of 3.5 trillion yen from 2014 to 2019. Following the talks, Japan also announced a sustainable development initiative for the Northeastern region.

NPF MULLS FIELDING THENUCHO FOR RS SEAT Correspondent/Staff Reporter
KOHIMA/DIMAPUR, MAR 19 (NPN): Though earlier speculated, yet when the NPF eventually initiated the process for filing of nomination of the party candidate for the lone Rajya Sabha seat, it literally caused a political upheaval. Letters, dated March 19, written by NPF president Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu, to Returning Officer of NLA and another to NPF legislature party leader T.R. Zeliang confirmed that the NPF was ready to set up a candidate-- veteran Naga politician Thenucho Tunyi for the Rajya Sabha and ensure that there will be a contest on March 31 with BJP nominee S. Phangnon Konyak. The development comes just a day after the Central BJP had officially declared State BJP Mahila Morcha president, S. Phangnon Konyak as the party’s official candidate for the lone Rajya Sabha seat. It may be mentioned that chief minister Neiphiu Rio’s tweet on Friday indicated that his party had endorsed the decision of the Central BJP to nominate Phangnon. Rio had congratulated Phangnon “on being selected as the candidate for the biennial elections to the Council of States @RajyaSabha, from Nagaland...” Dr. Shürhozelie in his

letter to NPF legislature party leader TR Zeliang, who is also the UDA chairman, which went viral on social media, expressed his party’s happiness to inform that Thenucho had come forward to stand as NPF candidate for the RS election “if no candidate comes forward from our legislature group.” A nominee for RS has to be recommended by not less than 10 legislators as per norms, Dr. Shürhozelie has requested T.R. Zeliang to take up the matter and entrust the required number of MLAs to sign the nomination paper on Monday, the last date of filing of the papers. In another letter, Dr. Shürhozelie authorized NPF legal cell co-convenor Vimeno Kuotsu to liaison with the returning officer for the biennial polls and to collect and file the nomination paper on behalf of the party’s official candidate. However, when contacted a senior NPF legislator informed Nagaland Post that there was a “communication gap” between the NPF legislators and the party leaders. Without explaining much about the miscommunication, he said now that the party (NPF legislature) was under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) with one NPF MLA in the cabinet. He said, therefore the NPF elected members were likely to go along with the UDA
consensus nominee. On the other hand, State BJP chief spokesperson, Atopu Shohe said the BJP was confident that the NPF legislators, being part of the UDA, would respect and stand by the decision of the alliance to field Phangnon Konyak. As reported, he also said it was a pre-poll commitment of the NDPP to support a BJP Rajya Sabha candidate in return for support extended to the NDPP candidate in the Lok Sabha elections. The development has further given grist to rumour mills about certain sections of the society raising heckles against allowing a BJP member to represent Nagaland in the Rajya Sabha.

When contacted, a senior NPF legislator confirmed about the letter by the party president requesting the legislators to sign the nomination papers in support of the NPF nominee. The legislator, however, said that the NPF legislators had already held a meeting on March 18 and “the MLAs decided not to file nominations as BJP candidate is a consensus of BJP and NDPP.” “We are part of UDA-- opposition less government so we decided not to file nomination,” the

If all does not go well within the UDA alliance, the Rajya Sabha elections is likely to witness cross-voting among the legislators. This is so since political parties do not issue whip for the Rajya Sabha elections. According to a report in The Hindu— in the matter with regard to Tamil Nadu Rajya Sabha elections in 2013, a senior Election Commission official had said that even if the legislators cross vote, it would not attract disqualification under the 10 Schedule of the Constitution of India (Article 102 (2) and 191 (2).
legislator said. After the March 18 meeting, seven senior NPF functionaries had also met the legislators and the same was conveyed to them, he said. Asked whether the MLAs would heed to party president’s request, the senior legislator said since NPF joined hands to form an “oppositionless government– UDA for early Naga solution” it would send across a “wrong message to public if we have differences with BJP and NDPP on RS nomination”. He said the MLAs will meet the party leaders on March 20 to deliberate on the issue, since the party and legislators “cannot have separate decisions.” “We will hammer out the differences in the meeting. We cannot have separate decisions,” he reiterated.

of the tablet and that more efforts would be made to take full advantage of the eVidhan system in Assembly functioning with additional training programme in the coming days. He further revealed that once other Assemblies across the country imple-
mented the paperless proceedings, all the Assemblies would be connected to a network that would link them to Parliament. NeVA project was funded by Union Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs with 10% State share, which was extended by chief minister Neiphiu Rio, the speaker added. He further informed the House that the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs had complimented NLA for having become the first State Assembly to operationalise it.

I still remember that after riots used to break out, they instilled confidence among the common people. They are seen as saviours.” He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dream was to make India the top performer in all fields by the time the country celebrates
the centenary of its Independence. He also recalled how revocation of Article 370 and 35-A fulfilled the dream of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee and Pandit Prem Nath Dogra. “Their dreams of Ek Nishan, Ek Pradhan and Ek Vidhan were fulfilled following revocation of Article 370,” he said and added that with the revocation of Article 370 ended the discrimination against underprivileged sections including women, West Pak refugees, Gurkha and Valmiki communities.

bly elections. He had also resigned as a member of the state Assembly. The two main contenders, Biren and Bishwajt were summoned to Delhi amid reports of party Central observers for the election of the legislators’ leader postponing their visit in the state. The BJP had appointed Union ministers Nirmala Sitharaman and Kiren Rijiju as observer and co-observer for the legislative party leader’s election last Monday. Earlier, the observers were scheduled to arrive in Imphal on Saturday to take part in a meeting of legislators to elect their leader. It was however postponed at the last minute. Highly reliable sources said Biren and Bishwajit
rushed to Delhi on the direction of the Central leaders to resolve the matter of election of the leader of the state BJP legislators to pave the way for formation of the next government in the state. Earlier this week, the two main contenders for the chief minister’s post were in Delhi along with state unit BJP president A Sarda Devi and BJP national secretary (Manipur in-charge) after the BJP central leadership summoned them. The state party leaders returned to Imphal after three days of camping in the national capital even as media reported that they were summoned by national party leaders to discuss the pending election of the leader of the legislator wing
of the party. After returning to Imphal, the leaders ridiculed media reports of race for chief minister post. They informed the media that they expected election of the leader of the party legislator wing after Holi celebrations. Even as the BJP got absolute majority by winning 32 seats in the recently concluded assembly elections, the party is yet to form a government pending the election of leader of the legislators who will be the next chief minister of the state. The results of the elections were declared on March 10. The new legislators have also taken oaths as the members of the 12th state Assembly. Sources said that the BJP central leadership in Delhi will meet with the caretaker chief minister N Biren Singh and former works minister Th Biswajit Singh again today on the formation of government in the state. However, it was not clear whether the Central leaders would meet them together or separately.

IMPHAL, MAR 19 (PTI): Thounaojam Brinda, a former police officer who lost to her BJP rival in the Manipur assembly polls, has asserted that contesting the elections without “spending any money” is in itself a “huge victory”. Brinda claimed that she is the first person in the state’s history to have contested the assembly election without incurring any expenditure. “I lost the election, but this is only a temporary retreat. I would certainly fulfill my poll promises about people’s rights and opportunities,” she told reporters. The JD(U) nominee, who lost to BJP’s Satyabrata in the Yaiskul seat, also said she would form “a council” to look into the needs of those who require government assistance the most. Brinda came to the limelight in connection with a high-profile drug haul she led in busting in June 2018, leading to the arrest of the then Chandel Autonomous District Council Chairman Lukhosei Zou and seven others. She was awarded with the police medal by Chief Minister N Biren Singh for her role in the seizure of the drugs and cash.
GUWAHATI, MAR 19 (PTI): BJP’s coalition partner in Assam, the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), has named its working president Rwngwra Narzary as its candidate for the Rajya Sabha polls. Two seats from the state are falling vacant, election for which is due on March 31. While the BJP has nominated Pabitra Margherita as its candidate for one seat, the saffron party and AGP, another coalition partner, made way for the UPPL to field its nominee for the second seat. “We are really happy to announce the name of Shri Rwngwra Narzary, Working President of UPPL as the candidate for the ensuing Rajya Sabha election. Boro also thanked Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, along with the state BJP chief Bhabesh Kalita and AGP president Atul Bora, for their support. The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) is the third partner in the BJP-led coalition in the state. The two seats for which elections are due were held by Ripun Bora and Ranee Narah of the Congress. Ripun Bora is in the fray this
time as the Opposition parties’ joint candidate. The ruling coalition stands comfortably poised to get one of its candidates easily elected, though it may fall short by a couple of votes if the Opposition votes as a bloc for its lone nominee so far. Out of seven Rajya Sabha seats from Assam, the BJP currently holds three and Congress two. The AGP has one member in the Upper House, while the other is held by an Independent. The BJP’s strength in the 126-member Assam Assembly is 63, while AGP has nine and UPPL has seven MLAs. The Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), which has lent its support to the government in the Assembly floor but not entered into any political alliance, has three MLAs. DEHRADUN, MAR 19 (PTI): The BJP legislature party meeting to decide the new chief minister of Uttarakhand is likely to be held here on Monday. The party’s central observers for Uttarakhand Rajnath Singh and Meenakshi Lekhi may arrive a day earlier on Sunday or on the same day to attend the meeting, state BJP spokesman Shadab Shams told PTI. The swearing-in ceremony may take place on Tuesday with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah likely to attend the event, he said. With Kumaon celebrating Holi on Saturday many MLAs who represent constituencies in that region are still there.
AIMIM is BJP’s ‘B’ team which was proved in UP & Bengal polls: Raut
MUMBAI, MAR 19 (PTI): Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut on Saturday rejected the suggestion of AIMIM for an alliance with Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), saying those who bow before the grave of Aurangzeb cannot become Maharashtra’s ideal and dubbed the Asaduddin Owaisi-led party as the “B team” of the BJP. All India Majlis-EIttehadul Muslimeen MP Imtiaz Jaleel has caused a flutter in political circles by suggesting an alliance with the MVA, saying the dispensation can become a “comfortable car” from the three-wheeled autorickshaw which can prevent the BJP from coming to power. “The AIMIM has a secret alliance with the BJP which was proved in Uttar

Pradesh and West Bengal elections. The AIMIM is a ‘B’ team of the BJP and will remain so. The MVA is a three-party alliance and there is no room for a fourth partner,” Raut told reporters. He said MVA partners revere Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj while AIMIM bows before Aurangzeb- the 17th century
Mughal emperor who had kept Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in captivity in Agra before the latter managed to escape. In the Hindutva narrative, Aurangzeb is portrayed as a fanatic who unsuccessfully tried to crush Chhatrapati Shivaji in Deccan. Raut also mocked Union minister and BJP MP Raosaheb Danve for claiming that 25 disgruntled MLAs of MVA were ready to boycott the ongoing Budget session and that several MLAs are in touch with BJP and will cross over once elections draw close. “He (Danve) might be intoxicated due to Holi festivities. If he is out of (drunken) stupor after Holi, he may not remember what he had said,” Raut said.

The Aam Aadmi Party bagged 92 seats in the 117-member Punjab Assembly, decimating the Congress, the Shiromani Akali Dal-Bahujan Samaj Party combine, and the BJPPunjab Lok Congress-SAD (Sanyukt) alliance.
CHANDIGARH, MAR 19 (PTI): In its first decision, the Punjab Cabinet led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Saturday approved filling up 25,000 vacant posts in various state departments, including 10,000 in the police force. Mann announced the decision in a video message after he chaired the first meeting of his Cabinet. The process of advertisement and notification for these jobs would be initiated within a month, he said. “In the coming days, we will also fulfil our rest of the guarantees (poll promises),” he added. The chief minister said 10,000 jobs will be given in the Punjab Police and the rest in various other departments, boards and corporations. He said the jobs will be given on merit. There will be no discrimination, no “sifarish” (recommendation) and no bribe, he added. This “historic” decision would open new vistas of employment for the youth by providing jobs to them in the government sector through a transparent and merit-based mechanism, said Mann. Unemployment has been one of the major issues that his Aam Aadmi Party had raised during the justconcluded state assembly polls. The party had promised to take the first cabinet decision of offering jobs after it came to power.

War crimes in Ukraine
A
s the whole world continues to witness terrible scenes in Ukraine that bring reminders of the inhuman destruction of cities and genocide on people by Hitler’s invading army, the scenes on Television and social media also remind how weak kneed and cowardly the US and its NATO allies are for not doing anything to help the Ukrainians. The western super powers led by the US and its NATO allies are watching on the sidelines because they are afraid of Putin’s warning that any intervention (to save the helpless Ukrainians) would lead to a bigger nuclear conflict. Ukraine’s president Volodymir Zelenskyy has been pleading with western powers to save Ukrainians by imposing No-Fly Zone over his country to prevent Russians from firing rockets and missiles from planes or launchers. However, the Western powers fall back on the excuse citing Putin’s warning, that any intervention could lead to a nuclear war of Third Word War. The self –paralysis and inaction has meant that Ukrainian civilians-women, the aged and children- can be killed indiscriminately because the west believes more in Putin than in the cries of pain and sufferings of the Ukrainians. Some civilians are getting shot at by Russian army while trying to flee besieged cities. The kind of barbarism and blatant and indiscriminate killing of Ukrainian civilians by the Putin’s army has raised demands that he be brought to trial for war crimes. US President Joe Biden has called Vladimir Putin a “war criminal” - when discussing the conflict in Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson have previously both accused Russia of carrying out war crimes. The term applies to anyone who violates a set of rules adopted by world leaders known as the law of armed conflict. The rules govern how countries behave in times of war. Like the Nazis who targeted everything and everyone, Putin’s army is doing hardly anything different in Ukraine. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) maintains that even war has rules and any deviation constitutes crime. These are contained in treaties called the Geneva Conventions and a string of other international laws and agreements. Civilians cannot be deliberately attacked - nor can the infrastructure that is vital to their survival. Some weapons are banned because of the indiscriminate or appalling suffering they cause - such as anti-personnel landmines and chemical or biological weapons. Investigators will look at past and present allegations - going back as far as 2013, before Russia’s annexation of Crimea from Ukraine. If there’s evidence, the prosecutor will ask ICC judges to issue arrest warrants to bring individuals to trial in The Hague. However, it is easier said than done because the ICC doesn’t have its own police force and has to rely on individual states to arrest suspects. In this case, Russia is not a member of ICJ as it pulled out in 2016. The option is to try the case in the International Criminal Court (ICC) in the Hague. Whatever happens with regard to trying Putin, he can only be brought to justice if Russian’s revolt and arrest him. That is not likely to happen and so the west should instead ponder on what they need to do to stop one of the worst atrocities in modern history by a man who is turning out to be a combination of Hitler and Stalin.
DailyDevotion Abraham’s Life of Faith
He went out, not knowing where he was going. — Hebrews 11:8 In the Old Testament, a person’s relationship with God was seen by the degree of separation in that person’s life. This separation is exhibited in the life of Abraham by his separation from his country and his family. When we think of separation today, we do not mean to be literally separated from those family members who do not have a personal relationship with God, but to be separated mentally and morally from their viewpoints. This is what Jesus Christ was referring to in Luke 14:26. Living a life of faith means never knowing where you are being led. But it does mean loving and knowing the One who is leading. It is literally a life of faith, not of understanding and reason— a life of knowing Him who calls us to go. Faith is rooted in the knowledge of a Person, and one of the biggest traps we fall into is the belief that if we have faith, God will surely lead us to success in the world. The final stage in the life of faith is the attainment of character, and we encounter many changes in the process. We feel the presence of God around us when we pray, yet we are only momentarily changed. We tend to keep going back to our everyday ways and the glory vanishes. A life of faith is not a life of one glorious mountaintop experience after another, like soaring on eagles’ wings, but is a life of day-in and day-out consistency; a life of walking without fainting (see Isaiah 40:31). It is not even a question of the holiness of sanctification, but of something which comes much farther down the road. It is a faith that has been tried and proved and has withstood the test. Abraham is not a type or an example of the holiness of sanctification, but a type of the life of faith— a faith, tested and true, built on the true God. “Abraham believed God…” (Romans 4:3).

World Oral Health Day: 20 March
very year on 20th March, World Oral Health Day is commemorated. It emphasizes the importance of excellent oral health, raises knowledge concerning oral illnesses and encourages proper dental hygiene. Dental health is just as crucial as overall wellness. It aids in the preservation of a healthier mouth, gums and teeth. Also it aids in the enhancement of your physical attractiveness. Poor dental health may contribute to a plethora of serious health issues including cardiovascular disease, obesity, strokes, respiratory difficulties and preterm deliveries in expectant mothers. World Oral Health Day was first declared in 2007 by FDI (Federation Dentaire Internationale) World Dental Association and was originally celebrated on 12th September-the birth date of FDI founder Dr Charles Godon. However the campaign was not fully activated until 2013, after the date was changed to 20th March to avoid conflict with the FDI
World Dental Congress taking place in September and the date has remained the same till date. Last year, we launched our three-year campaign theme: “BE PROUD OF YOUR MOUTH”. Be Proud of Your Mouth is not about just having a perfect mouth; it is about having a healthy one. We want people to value and take care of their oral health and to make the right decisions to protect it. In 2021, under the theme “Be proud of your mouth”, we encouraged action by focusing on the importance of oral health for overall health. In 2022, under the same theme, we are highlighting the fact that an unhealthy mouth can severely impact every aspect of life. That’s why, we are calling upon people to: LOOK AFTER YOUR ORAL HEALTH FOR YO U R H A P P I N E S S AND WELL-BEING. Because the goal of a happy life unites us all. World Oral Health Day (WOHD): Crucial Messages
Preventing, detecting and treating oral illnesses early are critical to limiting their influence on the entire of your body’s health. 1. Eat a healthy, low sugar diet; Consuming too much sugar in the form of sweetened beverages, snacks and processed meals leads to tooth damage (dental caries), obesity and diabetes. 2. Initiate a plan to improve your dental health: Diets rich in sugar and other factors associated, such as tobacco use are to blame for most cases of tooth decay. 3. Maintain a consistent oral hygiene regimen: Dental decay and gum disease, for example may have a negative effect on many aspects of one’s life, from personal relationships and self confidence to academic performance and the capacity to work and learn with other people. However, oral illnesses are prevented if a proper oral hygiene regimen is followed everyday which includes brushing for two minutes, twice a day, with

a fluoride toothpaste and remember to change the toothbrush every 3 months. 4. Protect your mouth when you are on the go: Chewing sugar free gum is proven to benefit dental health as it help neutralize the acids in plague present in the mouth. 5. Learn how to take care of your teeth and gums (especially children): Tooth decay and gaps in your teeth may be caused by bacteria in your mouth and teeth, therefore taking care of them are critical. 6. Visit the Dentist regularly: Schedule regular dental check ups and contact your dentist as soon as an oral health problem arises. Taking care of your oral health is an investment in your overall health. World Oral Health Day provides a platform to make a difference to the lives of people everywhere. Poor oral health affects nearly 3.5 billion people worldwide and has far reaching consequences, yet people tend not to realise the severe impact

an unhealthy mouth can have on their life. It can cause significant pain and suffering, affecting what you eat, how you speak and how you feel about yourself, leading to an impaired quality of life. On World Oral Health Day 2022, we are asking everyone to make meaningful action to help end the neglect of global oral health. PEOPLE: We want people to make the best decisions for their mouths and encourage them to practice a good oral hygiene routine. SCHOOLS AND YOUTH GROUPS: We want schools to integrate oral health into lessons and help empower children to practice healthy behaviours, now and in the future. GOVERNMENTS AND POLICYMAKERS: We want decision makers to champion better oral health for all, and to drive sustainable change and progress. FDI World Dental Federation drives World Oral Health Day to bring together the world
of dentistry and achieve optimal oral health for everyone. Governments and policymakers play a crucial role in raising awareness about the importance of good oral health for their citizen’s happiness and well-being, and the policy makers commitment is key to driving action and policy to achieve Vision 2030: “Delivering Optimal Oral Health for All”. I believe that through individual action combined with governmentdriven population-wide strategies, good oral health and general health can be secured. • IT IS TIME TO STOP BRUSHING ORAL HEALTH ASIDE. • LET’S REMEMBER THAT TO HAVE A H E A LT H Y B O DY YOU NEED TO HAVE A HEALTHY MOUTH & • A H E A LT H Y LIVING STARTS WITH HEALTHIER MOUTH Dr Meribeni Odyuo Jt Director & SPO (NOHP) H & FW Nagaland : Kohima
Behind Kashmir Files
hey sneaked in the battlefield, packed their kits, locked travelling trunk inside barracks and finally jumped onto the Kashmir. Life of a soldier moves on, where the chaos and lawlessness took over the valley. Most of them were just 18+, nothing knew about combating terrorism and instead planned a special celebration after Republic Day Parade. The contingent seemed to be filled with joie de vivre after the best marching trophy at Rajpath but an order shocked them as horrid nightmare. The Transit Camp at Race Course was spooked that night as never before. All previous postings had been cancelled by Vayu Bhawan. They had no idea about. It was the day prior to the grand finale of RD Parade 1990, Rawalpora shooting incident took place. On the morning of 25th January, motorcycle-borne terrorists fired from automatic weapons at unarmed IAF personnel killing Squadron Leader Ravi Khanna, Corporal D.B. Singh, Corporal Uday Shankar and Aircraftman Azad Ahmad, while they were waiting at the bus stand. The military strategy towards the valley had been reviewed. Soldiers moved with convoys at Jammu-Srinagar highway. Men in blue became no longer friendly with the valley. Pak sponsored terrorism misguided Kashmiri youth on the name of azadi and insurgency by JKLF escalated after the disputed assembly election in 1987 that forced 5 lakh Kashmiri pundits to leave the valley after a campaign of genocide started since 19 January 1990. The recent movie ‘The Kashmir Files’ helped to awaken many to the horrors of genocides. I had a special connection with Kashmir valley as I had also been part of that RD Parade contingent over the timeline of Kashmir during 90s. Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was then the Home Minister during VP Singh government whose fame rivalled that of Chief Minister Faruq Abdullah for appointing Jagmohan as Governor. Soon the CM resigned, the Governor suggested the dissolution of the Assembly and JKLF conspired to incite riots, violence against the Kashmiri Pundits. No one has listened and looked at them, who have strength of over half a million. This is how the human rights reckoned as trivial Kashmir. The world has also turned a blind eye to over 1000 murders of innocent unarmed and helpless men, women and children which had taken place in the valley over the span of one and half years in the hands of trained self-styled freedom fighter of Kashmir. They were packed shoulder to shoulder
on the road and became refugee in their own country. Refugees suffered, died of infection and disease in collided camp. Kashmir belongs as much to Kashmiri Hindus as belongs to Kashmiri Muslims. The propriety of the citadel of human wakening and freedom have ignited the complete exodus of the entire race while the world civilized nations failed to respond to the barbaric uprooting of the entire race of people. The valley also got suffering from the controversial law AFSPA at the same time, soldiers faced threat from militant for being uniform personnel. Facing QRT was beyond the dreadful wild-weather of winds, rains and cold bite. As nights were compulsory black out, we lost our way in dark under covering of sudden snowfall. The rays of morning sun reflected back from the thin blanket of snow trapped over the surface that blurred our eyes. The silent valley was unpredictable and catastrophically unsafe. You never know when a bullet from AK-47 or a rocket launcher could come down. There was mortal shelling on forward posts along the LOC. Lives were never easy. The troops lay barbed wire at the most wonderful mountain valley road at Uri-Muzaffrbad. Normal life often came to a grinding halt amid fear and terrorism by separatists but the most unforgettable memory of Kashmir is the colours of the mountains that changes at different hours of a day. We saw stunning snowfall hit the blue mountain all of a sudden. Amidst the breeze, it dotted with olive green military posts. Those picturesque panoramas are not just beautiful but covered by tall grass where cannabis grows abundantly. Army intensifies search for infiltrators along the three tier border. Over the years terrorist attacked pilgrimage and instigated the valley to a conflict zone. Yet our energy and enthusiasm for life was very high. We went besides the Jhelum and Indus, beneath the Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Ladakh in leisure despite unprovoked shelling over Jammu, Rajouri-Poonch. We also retaliate missiles befittingly at the cross borders at Kargil. We felt alive seeing the river flows abundantly. Hustle bustle of shikaras, houseboats and grace of the paradise suffered a major jolt. The travel & tourism failed to get a boost for ongoing unrest and uncertainty. Nevertheless Kashmiri Muslims struggle for basic needs of life. India being the great secular democratic country must do for Kashmiri refugees in the name of humanity. Bangladesh govt has ‘failed’ in protecting Hindus: RSS leader NEW DELHI, MAR 19 (PTI): RSS national executive member Indresh Kumar on Saturday condemned the alleged incident of vandalism at a temple in Bangladesh and urged India to intervene, saying the Sheikh Hasina government has “completely failed” in protecting the minority Hindus there. He also appealed to the Congress and all other opposition parties to condemn the incident rising above “politics of religion and caste” and join New Delhi in building pressure on Dhaka to stop attacks on Hindus, which he said continues to remain “unabated” in the neighbouring country. Kumar, founder and chief patron of Muslim Rashtriya Manch, also called upon the “Muslim society” to condemn the attack. According to reports, a mob of over 200 people allegedly attacked the devotees and vandalised ISKCON Radhakanta temple in Dhaka late on Thursday. “The attack was carried out at ISKCON Radhakanta temple at 222 Lal Mohan Saha Street in Wari, Dhaka, on Thursday evening by a mob of more than 200 people led by Haji

Saifullah. The temple was ransacked and looted,” Kumar said in message to PTI and described the incident “a form of terrorism.” On every festival, Hindus are targeted in Bangladesh under a “pre-planned conspiracy”, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leader said, adding that the community has faced 3,679 attacks, which include 1,678 cases of armed attacks and vandalism at religious places, in the last nine years. Citing a few incidents, he said, “During Navaratri last year, attacks were carried out and around 200 houses of Hindus were burnt, Durga Puja pandals were vandalised and the ISKCON temple in Dhaka was also attacked. “The Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina government has completely failed in providing protection to minority Hindus in Bangladesh. It is a horrifying situation,” he alleged.

HARIDWAR, MAR 19 (PTI): The government is accused of saffronising education but “what is wrong with saffron”, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu asked on Saturday as he called for total rejection of the Macaulay system of education from the country. Indians must give up their “colonial mindset” and learn to take pride in their Indian identity, the vice president said in his address after inaugurating the South Asian Institute of Peace and Reconciliation at the Dev Sanskriti Vishwa Vidyalaya here. Naidu also said Indianisation of the education system is central to India’s new education policy, which puts great emphasis on the promotion of mother tongues. “We are accused of saffronising education, but then what is wrong with saffron,” he asked. Calling for rejection of the Macaulay system of education in the 75th year of Independence, Naidu said it imposed a foreign language as the medium of education in the country and confined education to the elite. “Centuries of colonial rule taught us to look upon

ourselves as an inferior race. We were taught to despise our own culture, traditional wisdom. This slowed our growth as a nation. The imposition of a foreign language as our medium of education confined education to a small section of the society, depriving a vast population of the right to education,” he said. Thomas Babington Macaulay was a British historian who played a major role in the introduction of English as the medium of instruction for education in India. “We should feel proud of our heritage, our culture, our forefathers. We must go back to our roots. We must give up our colonial mindset and teach our children to take pride in their Indian identity. We must learn as many Indian languages as possible,” he said.
NEW DELHI, MAR 19 (PTI): Arbitration is the best-suited dispute resolution mechanism for the globalised world and a timebound process structured to deliver immediate relief, Chief Justice N V Ramana said on Saturday. Ramana, who spoke at the fourth edition of the international conference on “arbitration in the era of globalisation” in Dubai, said a prerequisite for achieving globalisation in true sense is ensuring “Trust in the globalised world can only be built by creating institutions with a strong emphasis on the rule of law. Rule of law and arbitration are not in conflict with one another. Both arbi-
tration and judicial adjudication aim to serve the same goal — the pursuit of justice. Indian courts are known for their pro-arbitration stance. Courts in India assist and support arbitration, and leave the substantive part of adjudication to the arbitral tribunal itself,” he said. “A crucial component of attracting investors is providing a stable and efficacious mechanism for redressal of disputes. The legislature, executive and the judiciary of India at all levels are committed to improving the arbitration landscape and the ease of doing business in the country. promoting a culture of arbitration is not a simple task and having a pro-arbitration jurisprudence and policy is not enough. “Some innovative steps must be taken in this regard. After examining various cases, I find that governments and parties often take the stand that the agreement initially entered into is void or incapable of execution because it is against public policy or against law. To avoid such belated objec-
tions, it is high time to evolve some special mechanisms. “One such special mechanism could be prevetting by a specially constituted authority of the State, prior to the parties entering into any commercial or investment agreement. No way am I suggesting that such a step is mandatory. It would be completely voluntary. Such a vetting process would, of course, be subject to the consent of the contracting parties,” he said.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR SUNDAY, MARCH 20, 2022
(From p-1) Longkumer expressed his appreciation and gratitude to implementing agency SBL Knowledge Services and Assembly Secretariat for their speed, efficiency and commitment in making the new system operational. Meanwhile, while the State Assembly had on one hand upgraded itself with modern gadgets, on the other hand there were various ills still plaguing the Assembly building. For instance, the Assembly building was yet to see installation of the ceiling fans that were assured to the members by former Sazo. The issue was raised by a member earlier, who said it got unpleasantly warm and humid inside the House and regretted that till now the fans were not installed. Also, water at most of the washrooms in the Assembly complex was highly contaminated and unsafe for human use. The water provided to the washrooms are reddish brown in colour and have a strong odour of iron content. Though the matter had been noticed in the past few successive Assembly sessions, nothing had apparently been done to get the problem solved. Also, the Assembly bells that were installed during the construction of the complex are also in need of modernisation as these bells sound highly unpleasant.

the I-T department. “For example, the annual information system (AIS) in which more and more information about the financial transactions they would have done in the year is now being delivered to the taxpayer. This is taking them towards voluntary compliance. “Out of the over Rs 13.63 lakh crore collection (as on March 16), only about Rs 54,000-55,000 crore has come from regular assessment tax (under which tax is paid by the assessee after department issues notice to them). “The rest of the collection is coming by way of voluntary compliance. This is happening because taxpayers are getting empowered with the financial information which is available to them,” he said. Earlier, taxpayers used to “struggle” to get this information but now they have it at their fingertips, the CBDT chief said. “So, this has also helped the taxpayer to pay the right amount of taxes,” he said.
Mohapatra said that by the end of this fiscal on March 31, the net or actual tax collections, after issuance of due refunds, should settle “upwards of Rs 13.5 lakh crore.” The I-T department was given a target to collect Rs 11.08 lakh crore (budget estimates) this fiscal and it was later revised to Rs 12.50 lakh crore. Mohapatra said collections under all heads have been the highest this time. He gave a breakup to substantiate his point. This year till March 16, the collection under the advance tax category was Rs 6.62 lakh crore, which is 40.7 per cent more than 2020-21, 50.6 per cent more than 2019-20 and 30.8 per cent more than 2018-19, he said. Similarly, the collection under the tax deducted at source (TDS) category stands at Rs 6.79 lakh crore, which is 37.7 per cent more than 2020-21, 40.5 per cent more than 2019-20 and 51.9 per cent more than 2018-19, he added.
Naga solution to soon become a reality: Gov (From p-1) He said the creation of Tseminyu district fulfilled the aspirations of Rengma people to have a district of their own, while Shamator district’s creation fulfilled the desire of Yimkhiung and Tikhir people to have a separate district, adding that this exemplified the spirit of reconciliation that the brother tribes exhibited for resolving their decades-old disputes amicably, which also led to the recognition of Tikhir as a separate Naga tribe. He mentioned that the upgrade of Niuland to a fullfledged district was required on administrative grounds, while the creation of Chümoukedima district resolved the matter regarding the headquarters of erstwhile Dimapur district. Even as demands had been received from certain more areas for creation of new districts, he clarified that the State government would not like to
divide any single-tribe district in keeping with the motto of unity. ULB election issue resolved: On elections to urban local bodies (ULBs), he said the issue was sensitive as many considered reserving seats for women was against the traditions and customs of Nagas. However, he claimed that the issue had been resolved now and the State would soon have elected ULBs for proper governance of towns and cities and for improvement in civic amenities. Law & order peaceful: The governor said the general law and order situation in the State had remained largely peaceful as the district administrations, police and all security agencies remain committed for ensuring peace and harmony. Inter-State border: On the inter-State borders, he said the situation remained peaceful except at two locations along the border with Assam in Mokokc-
hung, which became tense due to stand-offs between the police forces of both the States. Mentioning that NLA had constituted a Select Committee headed by chief minister Neiphiu Rio to examine and inter alia find ways for amicable settlement of the border issue with Assam, he claimed that the committee had taken positive steps towards this end. Assam, Nagaland to share oil exploration in DAB: As the State government had taken steps to resolve the issue regarding oil exploration, the governor informed the House that Assam chief minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma had indicated equally dividing the proceeds of oil exploration and extraction between the two States in sectors A, B & C in DAB area. He assured that the government would continue to put efforts in seeking cooperation of the Centre and the Government of Assam for resolving

the matter. For oil exploration outside DAB, he said the Centre would have to recognise the ownership of indigenous inhabitants of Nagaland and the constitutional protection granted to them under Article 371A regarding transfer of land and resources and thereafter devise a mutuallyagreed and suitable mechanism for payment of royalty and issue of petroleum exploration licences. He assured the members to continue efforts to resolve the matter for the benefit of people of the State and country. The governor also highlighted the achievements of the government in various fields. Obituary reference: Earlier, NLA Speaker Sharingain Longkumer made obituary reference on the passing away of former legislator Dr. Kakheto Zhimomi in February this year. The House observed a 5-minute silence to pay respect to the departed soul.

In a press note, RPP said that they party had made certain observations during the ongoing walkathon around the state. Humlam road (Salt road) covering Wakching - Chingdang - Chinglong – Aboi, adding that it was important that the UDA government recognise the historical importance of this route. Apart from the above, the RPP also demands full implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) in both Wakching Town and Wakching Village, asserting that both town and village were bereft of water and situation remained unchanged for several years. RPP also said it was unacceptable that while villages in and around Dimapur were benefitting from the JJM project, Wakching/Tamlu/eastern Nagaland was suffering. Lastly, RPP said the other observation was that Aboi and Tobu deserved to be upgraded to districts. If for administrative convenience Chümoukedima district can be created, there was no reason for Aboi and Tobu people to suffer, RPP stated.

dividends, Mohapatra said. “The third reason, I would say, will be the reforms within the department... which have been continuous in the last four years. “Probably, we have changed more than ever in the history of this department and these reforms take a while to gather steam and create results,” he said. Mohapatra said after three-four years of working on the reforms, both the taxpayer and the department are getting acquainted with the new processes and procedures and they are “slowly bearing fruit.” “So, the point is that the reforms, once triggered, do not yield result right away but it takes time to sink in the mind, consciousness and also in the operational culture of the department. So, now probably the time has come in which we are seeing the results of the reforms in the department,” he said. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) is the administrative body for the I-T department and according to its March 17 announcement, direct tax collections (as on March 16) in India broke all previous records. The CBDT chief listed the reasons that he believes led to the record collections. “First is the strengthening of the Indian economy. The better the economy, the better is the tax mop-up, which is happening right now.” “Second reason will be the reforms undertaken across departments having an effect on the tax department’s own collection numbers,” he said. There are policy measures that have been taken over a period of time, in the budget or outside the budget, and are now giving the “rebound effect” or

Reforms in I-T Dept led to record tax collections
NEW DELHI, MAR 19 (AGENCIES): Reforms undertaken by the government within the Income Tax department and the “strengthening” of the Indian economy are among the major factors that led to the highest-ever direct tax collections in the country, which stand at over Rs 13.63 lakh crore, CBDT Chairman J B Mohapatra has said. According to Business Today, he said apprehensions about the state of the economy, battered by the COVID-19 spread, were belied as it “did so well and the corporates came out so well (in paying taxes)” during the current financial year 2021-22. Mohapatra exuded confidence that the direct tax mop-up, which primarily includes personal income tax and corporation tax revenue receipts, will continue its present streak and the department will be able to successfully chase the target of collecting Rs 14.20 lakh crore in taxes in the next fiscal. “It will be very difficult

Bird flu case forces killing of 5.3 million chickens in US
DES MOINES (IOWA), MAR 19 (AGENCIES): The confirmation of bird flu at another Iowa egglaying farm will force the killing of more than 5 million chickens, state officials said Friday. It’s the second confirmed case of avian influenza in Buena Vista County, about 160 miles (257 kilometers) northwest of Des Moines, but the latest outbreak is at an operation with 5.3 million chickens. The latest case confirmed by the state Department of Agriculture means nearly 12.6 million chicken and turkeys in at least eight states have been killed or will be destroyed soon. Spread of the disease is largely blamed on the drop-

The first Iowa case was identified on March 1 in a backyard flock of 42 ducks and geese in Pottawattamie County in western Iowa. Another egg-laying chicken farm with nearly 916,000 birds was reported with the virus on March 10 in Taylor County in southwest Iowa.

China reports first COVID deaths in more than a year
BEIJING, MAR 19 (AP): China’s health authorities reported two COVID-19 deaths on Saturday, the first since January 2021, as the country battles its worst outbreak in two years driven by a surge in the highly transmissible omicron variant. The deaths, both in northeastern Jilin province, bring the country’s coronavirus death toll to 4,638. Both fatalities occurred in elderly patients and were the result of their underlying conditions, Jiao Yahui, an official with the National Health Commission, told a news briefing on Saturday. One of them had not been vaccinated for COVID-19, he said. The majority of new 2,157 community transmissions reported Saturday came from Jilin. The province has imposed a travel

some, “zero-COVID” strategy since the initial outbreak in Wuhan in 2019. The country has seen relatively few infections from the virus so far because clusters are tamped down as quickly as they’re discovered. The strategy has received popular support and prevented the large numbers
of deaths seen in other countries, many of which have started to forgo any kind of social distancing measures. Faced with the worst surge since late 2019, officials have vowed to double down on the zero-tolerance strategy to contain multiple outbreaks across China. However, leader Xi Jinping acknowledged for the first time the burden of the measures on Thursday, saying that China should seek “maximum effect” with “minimum cost” in controlling the virus. Hong Kong, which is facing its worst surge of the pandemic, recorded 16,583 new cases Saturday. The city’s total coronavirus infections exceeded 1 million on Friday, and its number of deaths has already surpassed mainland China’s.

Konashenkov said Russian forces also used the anti-ship Bastion missile system to strike Ukrainian military facilities near the Black Sea port of Odesa. Russia first used the weapon during its military campaign in Syria in 2016. Ukrainian and Russian officials agreed to establish 10 humanitarian corridors for bringing aid in and residents out — one from Mariupol and several around Kyiv and in the eastern Luhansk region, Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk said Saturday. She also announced plans to deliver humanitarian aid to the southern city of Kherson, which was seized by Russian forces.

Zelenskyy accused the Kremlin in an overnight video address of deliberately creating “a humanitarian catastrophe” and appealed again for Russian President Vladimir Putin to meet with him to prevent more bloodshed. Noting that the 200,000 people reported to have attended the rally was similar to the number of Russian forces deployed to Ukraine, Zelenskyy said Friday’s event in Moscow illustrated the stakes of the largest ground conflict in Europe since World War II. “Picture for yourself that in that stadium in Moscow there are 14,000 dead bodies and tens of thou-

36-million-year-old fossil of ‘ sea monster’ found in desert M
P
aleontologists on Thursday unveiled the fossilized remains of an ancient whale that inhabited the seas 36 million years ago, found last year in a Peruvian desert. Scientists called the creature a “sea monster” that “surely did a lot of damage.” “We have presented the new Peruvian basilosaurus, it is the complete skull of an archaic whale that lived 36 million years ago,” paleontologist Mario Urbina, head of the team that discovered the skeleton, told AFP. Urbina said the basilosaurus was found at the end of 2021 in the Ocucaje Desert in the Ica department, about 215 miles south of Lima. The desolate landscape was a shallow sea millions of years ago, and its dunes have yielded large numbers of striking primitive sea mammal remains. Rodolfo Salas, chief of paleontology at Peru’s National University of San Marcos, said that the whale
The fossil remains of a Basilosaurus’ skull displayed by paleontologists at a museum in Lima, on March 17, 2022. was a “sea monster.” “The most incredible thing is that the skull is in a very good state of preservation, it has complete teeth; it was a first-order predator, at the top of that time that fed on fish penguins; a sea monster just as they imagine it and we think it is a new species,” Salas said. The “Ocucaje Predator,” as the researchers dubbed it, was about 55 feet long and used its massive, powerful teeth to feed on tuna, sharks and schools
of sardines. “When it was searching for its food, it surely did a lot of damage,” Salas said, according to the Reuters news agency. “This finding is very important because there are no other similar specimens discovered in the world,” said Urbina, a researcher at the university. Team member Rodolfo Salas-Gismondi explained the basilosaurus differs from other known ancient whale species by its size and the develop-
ment of its teeth, both of which indicate the animal was likely at the top of the food chain. “This is an extraordinary find because of its great state of preservation,” he told AFP. “This animal was one of the largest predators of its time.” “At that time the Peruvian sea was warm,” added Salas-Gismondi, who heads the Department of Vertebrate Paleontology at the Natural History Museum in Lima. “Thanks to this type of fossil, we can reconstruct the history of the Peruvian sea.” The first cetaceans, like the basilosaur us, evolved from land animals some 55 million years ago. By the late Eocene period (between 56 million and 34 million years ago), cetaceans had fully adapted to marine life. Whales had not yet evolved, and almost all cetaceans were marine macropredators, according to the research team.

U2 series in early development at Netflix; JJ Abrams to produce
icro-blogging site Twitter has announced that it has started testing a new clipping tool for Spaces. Select hosts on iOS are now able to clip 30 seconds of audio from recorded Spaces to share them with others on Twitter, reports TechCrunch. All iOS users can now see and listen to the clips on their timelines, while Android and web users will get access soon. The company said it also plans to roll out clipping functionality to all users in the future, not just hosts. “There is no limit to the number of audio clips that can be created, and they will live on the platform for 30 days,” a Twitter spokesperson was quoted as saying in an email. “Currently, everyone on iOS can see and listen to Spaces clips on their Timeline, and soon people on Android and Twitter. com will receive access too. We will be monitoring feedback and plan to expand Spaces clipping functionality to everyone on Twitter in the near future,” spokesperson added. (IANS)
scripted series about legendar y rock band U2 is in early development at Netflix, Variety has confirmed with sources. J.J. Abrams is attached to executive produce the project under his Bad Robot banner, with “Bohemian Rhapsody” writer Anthony McCarten onboard to write the script. Warner Bros. Television, where Bad Robot is currently under an expansive overall deal, will produce. It is unclear at this time exactly how involved U2 would be in the project. Exact plot details for the show are currently under wraps, but given McCarten’s involvement it seems logical to assume that the show would delve into the history of the band. Reps for Netflix, Warner Bros. TV, and Bad Robot declined to comment. U2 is one of the most iconic bands in history and rank among the bestselling musical artists of all time. he most boring person in the world has been discovered and it is a religious data entry worker, who likes watching TV, and lives in a town, said researchers from the University of Essex. According to the researchers, after examining more than 500 people across five experiments they found that the blandest jobs are seen as cleaning, banking, data analysis and accounting. “The irony is studying boredom is actually very interesting and has many real-life impacts,” said researcher Wijnand Van Tilburg. “These papers show how persuasive perceptions of boredom are and what an impact this can have on people,” Tilburg added. The paper, published in the journal ‘Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin’, also discovered the dullest hobbies as religion, watching TV, bird watching and smoking. Boring people are also perceived to shun large settlements to live in small cities and towns, the research indicated. The research revealed that stereotypically boring people are generally disliked and avoided due to preconceptions.
Nova Base was far above freezing at 44.6 degrees (7 degrees Celsius). It caught officials at the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colorado, by surprise because they were paying attention to the Arctic where it was 50 degrees warmer than average and areas around the North Pole were nearing or at the melting point, which is really unusual for mid-March, said center ice scientist Walt Meier. “They are opposite seasons. You don’t see the north and the south (poles) both melting at the same time,” Meier told The Associated Press Friday evening. “It’s definitely an unusual occurrence.” “It’s pretty stunning,” Meier added. “Wow. The Antarctic warm spell was first reported by The Washington Post. The Antarctic continent as a whole on Friday was about 8.6 degrees (4.8 degrees Celsius) warmer than a baseline temperature between 1979 and 2000, according to the University of Maine’s Climate Reanalyzer, based on U.S. National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration weather models. Lazzara monitors temperatures at East Antarctica’s Dome C-ii and logged 14 degrees (-10 degrees Celsius) Friday, where the normal is -45 degrees (-43 degrees Celsius): “That’s a temperature that you should see in January, not March. January is summer there. That’s dramatic.” Both Lazzara and Meier said what happened in Antarctica is probably just
8-degree heating over an already warmed-up average is unusual, think of it as if the entire United States was 8 degrees hotter than normal, Meier said. At the same time, on Friday the Arctic as a whole was 6 degrees (3.3 degrees) warmer than the 1979 to 2000 average. By comparison, the world as a whole was only 1.1 degrees (0.6 degrees Celsius) above the 1979 to 2000 average. Globally the 1979 to 2000 average is about half a degree (.3 degrees Celsius) warmer than the 20th century average. What makes the Antarctic warming really weird is that the southern continent — except for its vulnerable peninsula which is warming quickly and losing ice rapidly — has not been warming much, especially when compared to the rest of the globe, Meier said.
The Xukhepu Students' Union with utmost appreciation congratulates Miss Nisana T Zhimo, daughter of Mr Toishe Zhimo and Mrs Husuli for achieving Gold Medal in Master of Arts (Political Science) for which we are much elated for your recent achievement in UGC-Net exam as Assistant Professor. We wish you the best in all your future endeavours.

B’desh makes history with ODI win in SA
CENTURION, MAR 19 (AGENCIES): Bangladesh’s top order fired on all cylinders as the tourists notched up a massive 314/7 and then dismissed South Africa for 276 to secure a historic away 38-run win in the first One-Day International at SuperSport Park and take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. This was Bangladesh’s first-ever win on South African soil. The Tamim Iqbal-led side had never won an ODI in South Africa in 19 previous attempts, but produced a fine display in the first match of the tour on Friday evening to break new ground in the 50-over format. With the victory, Bangladesh further strengthened their place at the top of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League standings, where they lead England and India in the

Early wickets then pegged South Africa’s chase back, with Shoriful Islam and Taskin Ahmed making early inroads. But fine half-centuries from Rassie van der Dussen (86) and David Miller (79) gave the hosts hope. How-
ever, Mehidy Hasan Miraz rattled through the tail with a four-for, picking up the crucial wicket of Miller. There were jubilant scenes on the pitch when Mahmudullah had Keshav Maharaj trapped in-front to seal a 38-run win.
Sakkari sets up Indian Wells title showdown against Swiatek INDIAN WELLS, MAR 19 (IANS): World No.6 Maria Sakkari of Greece advanced to her maiden WTA 1000 final, defeating defending champion Paula Badosa of Spain 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 in the semifinal to set up a title clash against No.4 Iga Swiatek of Poland at the BNP Paribas Open. Sakkari’s triumph sets up an interesting battle for the No.2 spot in WTA Rankings as the Greek player looks to end Swiatek’s 10-match winning streak and win the biggest title of her career. Swiatek scored a 7-6(6), 6-4 semifinal win over 2015 Indian Wells champion Simona Halep, advancing to the BNP Paribas Open title match for the first time. Sakkari is into her second final of the season, having reached her first in at the WTA 500 in St. Petersburg. Coming into Indian Wells this year, the 26-year-old
Iga Swiatek
Sakkari had reached seven semifinals in her last 10 tournaments, making two finals over that span. Prior to Friday night, she was 0-4 in semifinals at the WTA 1000 level. “I’ll be deadly honest that I never, ever thought about it. I have a lot of people around me telling me about the semifinals and that I was not able to get over this hurdle,” Sakkari was quoted as saying by wtatennis.com. “But I never, ever thought about it because I was al-

ways very confident and had a lot of belief that I would just get over it soon and it clicked, I guess.” Badosa had won the only previous meeting between the two, having defeated Sakkari last season at the WTA Finals in straight sets. “I was very concerned before the match because Paula is playing differently than the other girls,” Sakkari said. “She has a very heavy game. She obviously loves this tournament because
she won it six months ago. I had full faith and I believed in myself every single moment.” Sakkari leads the head-to-head over Swiatek 3-1. The 20-year-old Polish player earned her first win against Sakkari just three weeks ago in the semifinals of Doha. Swiatek won 6-4, 6-3 and went on to win the Doha title, her second WTA 1000 title of her career. The winner of Sunday’s final will rise to a new career-high of No.2 on Monday.

Women’s WC: Aus beat India; enter semis
AUCKLAND, MAR 19 (IANS): Captain Meg Lanning led from the front as Australia entered the semifinals of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup with a six-wicket win over India at Eden Park on Saturday. After Mithali Raj, Yastika Bhatia and Harmanpreet Kaur slammed fifties to help India post a competitive 277/7 in 50 overs, Australia chased down the total with three balls to spare and also the highest successful chase in the history of the tournament. Lanning led the controlled chase with 97 off 107 balls, laced with 13 boundaries in an innings where she collected runs and pierced gaps through point region for fun. But it was the opening partnership of 121 between Alyssa Healy (72) and Rachael Haynes (43) which set the tone for Australia’s unbeaten run in the showpiece event apart from young pacer Darcie Brown taking 3/30 in eight overs. After the departure of Healy and Haynes, captain Meg Lanning kept the scoreboard ticking with her creamy drives and punches while placing the cuts elegantly through square region on the off-side. But Lanning fell three

short of her 15th ODI century, slicing straight to point off Meghna. With eight needed off the final over, Mooney elegantly lofted Goswami over mid-wicket for four and then took two runs via drive through deep cover, followed by a four down the ground to maintain their clean slate in the tournament. Earlier, skipper Mithali Raj and number three Yastika Bhatia’s 130-run stand built the platform before an unbeaten 57 off 47 balls from Harmanpreet and 28ball 34 from Vastrakar took
India to 277/7 as 77 runs came off last 10 overs. Australia weren’t the best on the field nor with the ball as they conceded 29 extras, including 24 wides. India didn’t have a great start in power-play, losing Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma to Brown in the first six overs. While Mandhana drove away from the body and nicked to slip, Verma’s slash was snapped by Beth Mooney diving full length for a one-handed stunner at gully. Mithali and Yastika joined forces to stabilize
India’s innings, helped by Australia leaking runs. A total of 16 runs from the 12th over of Ellyse Perry got Mithali and Yastika to settle down without taking any further risk. Mithali, under pressure due to a lean run in the tournament, was a busy customer at the crease, getting her singles and made use of pace to get boundaries through square region in off-side. She looked delightful with the cover drive and used her feet well to slam a six down the ground. Yastika, more aggres-
sive of the two, struck delightful boundaries and ensured the scoreboard was ticking. The duo reached their respective fifties in 77 balls to set the platform for a big total. But Yastika fell in the 32nd over, picking out deep backward point off Brown. Six overs later, Mithali didn’t get the required elevation on slog-sweep and holed out to deep mid-wicket off legspinner Alana King. With Richa Ghosh stumped off Alana King and Sneh Rana bowled by Jess Jonassen, India were in trouble at 213/6 with almost eight overs left. But Harmanpreet and Pooja produced the big hits to put up a crucial stand of 64 off just 47 balls. Harmanpreet swept and bisected her way to reach fifty while Pooja shined with a cameo of 34 to give India a good total to defend, which wasn’t enough to stop Lanning and Co’s winning juggernaut. BRIEF SCORES: India 277/7 in 50 overs (Mithali Raj 68, Yastika Bhatia 59; Darcie Brown 3/30, Alana King 2/52) lost to Australia 280/4 in 49.3 overs (Meg Lanning 97, Alyssa Healy 72; Pooja Vastrakar 2/43, Sneh Rana 1/56) by six wickets.
All England Open: Lakshya Sen beats Lee Zii Jia, storms into final L O N D O N, M A R 1 9 (AGENCIES): Lakshya Sen produced a scintillating display to defeat Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia 21-13, 12-21, 21-19 in a closely-contested semi-final of the 2022 All England Open Badminton Championships in Birmingham. The Indian shuttler produced an incredible effort in the third game despite trailing at the mid-game break to cruise to his maiden final in the tournament. Sen will meet the winner of the match between Viktor Axelsen and Chou Tien-chen in the final of the tournament. The 20-year-old shuttler became the first Indian to reach the men’s singles final of the prestigious tournament in 21 years. Pullela Gopichand was the last Indian to reach the final round of All England in 2001. Prakash Padukone and Gopichand are the only Indians to have won the event, while Saina Nehwal had reached the final in 2015. It was an emphatic display from Lakshya, who came back from 10-14 down, and then 12-16 down to defeat Lee in the final game of the semi-final. The Indian shuttler made a bright start to the
Lakshya Sen
match, controlling the pace of the match with relative ease as he cruised to a 21-13 win. Lakshya also secured seven-successive points after the mid-game break, putting an end to Lee’s chances for a comeback. However, the Malaysian world no.7 saved his best for the second game, outclassing Lakshya with a series of jump smashes. In no time, Lee gained an 11-3 game at mid-game break and eventually secured a 2112 win to level the proceedings in the semi-final. Lee led for a major part of the deciding game; however, he turned passive as the duration of rallies continued to increase, and Lakshya eventually emerged on top after he ended Lee’s resistance at 21-19.
Sen has been in sensational form in the last six months as he secured his maiden Super 500 title at India Open in January and then claimed a runner-up finish at the German Open last week. Indian women’s doubles pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand on Friday progressed to the semifinals of the All England Championships by registering a shocking win over Korean second seeds Lee Sohee and Shin Seungchan. Treesa and Gayatri, world no 46, notched up a stunning 14-21 22-20 21-15 win over Lee and Shin in an hour and seven minutes to join men’s singles shuttler Lakshya Sen in the semifinals of the prestigious tournament.
Ukraine’s Mahuchikh wins high Verstappen edges Leclerc in final Bahrain GP practice jump gold at indoor C’ships
BELGRADE, MAR 19 (AGENCIES): Yaroslava Mahuchikh, who was forced to flee her home in Dnipro after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, said she was fighting for her country in the stadium after winning gold in the high jump at the World Indoor Championships in Belgrade. The 20-year-old, who is the reigning European Indoor high jump champion and won bronze at the Tokyo Olympics, spent days sheltering in a cellar before travelling for three days by car to reach Serbia, a trip of nearly 2,000 kilometres. Pankaj Advani bags Asian Billiards title for 8th time
DOHA, MAR 19 (PTI): Ace Indian cueist Pankaj Advani defeated compatriot Dhruv Sitwala by six frames to win his eighth title at the 19th Asian 100 UP Billiards Championship 2022 here on Saturday. This is Advani’s 40th international title and 8th Asian crown. Against Sitwala, a twotime Asian Billiards champion, Advani won the first frame before following it up with a smooth century break to extend the lead to 2-0. In the third frame, Advani opened up a 84-14 lead and went up three frames to nil and resorted to white pot
at 87 and positioned it well for a red in-off the spot. Sitwala fought back and pulled one back when his famed opponent missed a red early in the frame. He came up with a 82 break to reduce the lead. Advani won the fifth frame to establish a 4-1 lead and stormed ahead to take the sixth too. Sitwala capitalised on a miss by his countryman to take the seventh frame before Advani re-focussed to capture the eighth frame despite an impressive break by his opponent for a 6-2 triumph.
“I don’t think about competition, training. For me, coming here was difficult -- three days by car -- and to jump here was so difficult psychologically because my heart remains in my country.”

The Dutchman hustled his Red Bull around the 5.4-km Sakhir track in one minute 32.544 seconds, with Leclerc hot on his heels with a time just 0.096 seconds slower. at improving the racing spectacle. Mercedes, gunning for a record ninth successive constructors’ crown, have,
in comparison, struggled to squeeze the speed from their new challenger with Lewis Hamilton warning fans not to expect him to be in the fight for the win on Sunday. The seven-times champion, the most successful driver at the Bahrain track with five wins, was only sixth, half a second off his Red Bull rival’s pace. New team mate George Russell was fourth 0.391 seconds off Verstappen’s best. F1 retur nee Kevin M a g nu s s e n , r e p l a c i n g sacked Russian Nikita Mazepin, put the Haas team in a promising seventh. Former Mercedes racer Valtteri Bottas was eighth ahead of Alfa Romeo team
mate and Chinese rookie Guanyu Zhou. Canadian Lance Stroll rounded out the top 10 in his Aston Martin. N i c o H u l k e n b e r g, standing in at Aston Martin for Sebastian Vettel who has been sidelined by COVID-19, was 12th. Australian Daniel Ricciardo, back in the car this weekend having just recovered from COVID, was 15th for McLaren. Saturday afternoon’s hour-long session was largely incident free. FIH Pro League hockey: India lose 1-3 to Argentina in shoot-out
India lost in shoot-out after both the teams were tied 2-2.
BHUBANESWAR, MAR 19 (PTI): The Indian men’s hockey team slumped to its third defeat in the FIH Pro League, losing 1-3 to Argentina in the shoot-out in the first leg match after both the teams were tied 2-2 at the end of the regulation time at the Kalinga Stadium
here on Saturday. Gurjant Singh (38th minute) and Mandeep Singh (60th) were the goal scorers for India, while Argentina’s goals came from the sticks of Nicolas Acosta (45th) and Nicolas Keenan (52nd). It was a terrible shootout from Tokyo Olympic
bronze medallist India as only Harmanpreet Singh scored, while Abhishek, Gurjant and Sukhjeet Singh faltered. For Argentina, Keenan, Tomas Domene and Lucas Toscani found the back of the net in the shoot-out. By virtue of this win, Argentina secured a bonus point and climbed to fourth position in the standings with 11 points from five games. The Indians, on the other hand, continue to occupy the second spot despite the loss with 13 points from seven matches. Both the sides will lock horns again in the return leg on Sunday.
Saka sends Arsenal closer to Champions League return
L O N D O N, M A R 1 9 (AGENCIES): Arsenal took another big step towards ending a five-year exile from the Champions League as Bukayo Saka’s strike beat Aston Villa 1-0 to open up a four-point lead in fourth in the Premier League. The Gunners could even increase that gap with a game in hand over fifthplaced Manchester United and were well worthy of the three points against a toothless Villa despite the narrow scoreline. Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta had complained about the tight turnaround his side faced after Wednesday’s 2-0 home defeat to Liverpool. That defeat ended a five-game winning run and

there was no sign of tiredness from the visitors in the early stages. Emile Smith Rowe returned to the starting lineup as one of two changes as Gabriel Martinelli and Aaron Ramsdale missed out through illness and injury
respectively. Smith Rowe had the first chance inside the three minutes when he fired over from Martin Odegaard’s pass. Odegaard and Thomas Partey were dominating the midfield and a nice move be-
tween the two deserved a better finish from the Ghanian as he fired straight at Emiliano Martinez. The former Arsenal goalkeeper then denied his former club the opening goal with a stunning save low to his left to prevent Ezri Konsa turning into his own net from Saka’s dangerous cross. Saka was a constant threat and fittingly got the only goal on 30 minutes when Villa failed to clear a free-kick and he fired low past Martinez from the edge of the area. Arsenal players surrounded referee Andy Madley moments later begging for a red card after Tyrone Mings caught Saka, but the England international got away with just a booking. Villa improved after the break but lacked the
creativity to break Arsenal down as Philippe Coutinho failed to hit the heights of his best form since joining on loan from Barcelona. John McGinn curled a shot just wide and Ollie Watkins’ deflected effort came back off the outside of the post with Villa’s best chances to snatch an equaliser. Ramsdale’s absence meant Bernd Leno was making his first Premier League appearance since August. The German was not forced into a save until the final kick of the game when he parried Coutinho’s free-kick to safety and was mobbed by his teammates at full-time as Arsenal celebrated a big three points in their quest to get back to European football’s elite competition.
