KYIV, MAR 20 (AGENCIES): Amidst the rising tension between Ukraine and Russia, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on Sunday that he is “ready for negotiations” with Russian President Vladimir Putin, but that failure to do so would entail “a third World War,” CNN reported. “I’m ready for negotiations with him. I was ready for the last two years. And I think that without negotiations we cannot end this war,” he was quoted by CNN in its report. “I think that we have to use any format, any chance in order to have a possibility of negotiating, the possibility of talking to Putin. But if these attempts fail, that would mean that this is a third World War,” he added. In recent days, Zelenskyy has advocated further negotiations as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine enters its fourth week. In a video mes-

We have always offered dialogue, offered solutions for peace. And I want everyone to hear me now, especially in Moscow. It’s time to meet. Time to talk. It is time to restore territorial integrity and justice for Ukraine,” he said. In a huge escalation amid the conflict, Mos-
cow claimed it had struck a Ukrainian arms depot with hypersonic missiles- this would be the first use in combat of the next-generation weapons as Russian forces pushed deeper into the besieged and battered port city of Mariupol, where heavy fighting shut down a major steel plant and local authorities pleaded for more Western help. The US officially confirmed that Russia used ‘Dagger’ nuclear-capable hypersonic aeroballistic airto-ground missile during the hostilities in Ukraine, CNN reported. According to the CNN report, this was the first recorded case of the use of such missiles during Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine. It entered service in December 2017 and is one of the six new Russian strategic weapons unveiled by President Vladimir Putin earlier this month. Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began about a month ago, an estimated 6.5 million people have been displaced within the nation, while another 3.2 million have fled owing to safety concerns. Zelenskyy, who had previously rejected the US offer to evacuate Kyiv to safety, has garnered worldwide acclaim for spearheading the struggle against Russia’s attack. Many ordinary citizens have also volunteered to join the military in order to assist the country in its fight against heavyweight Russia.

Ball in the court of NPF legislators on Rajya Sabha polls
Correspondent/Staff Reporter
KOHIMA/DIMAPUR, MAR 20 (NPN): NPF which has joined the PDA government after which the current United Democratic Alliance (UDA) was formed as an all-party and opposition-less government appears to be on two minds over the issue of backing the NDPP’s commitment on ceding the lone Rajya Sabha seat to the BJP. Veteran Naga politician and NPF party president Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu is not inclined to accept the “pact” made between NDPP and BJP for the RS seat. He has therefore, written a letter to NPF legislature party leader T.R. Zeliang to enlist the
support its NPF legislators to recommend the name of NPF working president and former minister Thenucho Tunyi as the NPF candidate. The legislature party wing was yet to respond to the letter by NPF president Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu to NPF legislature party leader, T.R. Zeliang. NPF sources indicated that the organisation was clear that it will set up a candidate and that the legislature proceed with the matter. On the unexpected turn of events, the sources said the NPF was in opposition and not part of the deal between NDPP and the BJP when Rio in 2019 promised to give BJP the RS seat. NPF
then was in opposition and had backed the Congress candidate who narrowly lost to PDA consensus candidate from NDPP. Sources also contend that if BJP wanted to go by the 2019 promise made by Rio to the party in exchange for support for the NDPP candidate during the Lok Sabha election, then there should have been discussions for setting up a consensus candidate among the present UDA constituents. Speaking to Nagaland Post, NPF secretary general Achumbemo Kikon clarified the party’s stand that there was no dispute on the decision to set up a party candidate. It was learnt that the NPF legislators were

of us and more particularly with governmental agencies, NVCO said it was high time for the government to promote the basic rights of all consumers ensuring those rights were respected and protected from market abuses and social injustices which undermine the so called ‘Consumer Rights’. However, NVCO said that the state government was yet to frame rules & regulations for the new Act, which was urgently needed to allow the functions of State Commission and Dis-
trict Consumer Disputes Redressal Commissions smoothly. Further, NVCO also said that since the Consumer Protection Act, 1986 was no more applicable, the Nagaland University should also immediately update the LLB study course/syllabus with the new Act (CPA, 2019). scheduled to hold a meeting on Sunday to discuss the issue but it was not held. When contacted, TR Zeliang informed Nagaland Post that the meeting could not be held since he was out of station. Zeliang, said that he had entrusted senior NPF legislator and spokesperson Imkong L. Imchen to convene the meeting of the legislators on Monday morning to taken the “final call”. Another NPF legislator, when contacted, said that the decision of the MLAs will be made known only after the meeting on Monday and before the commencement of Assembly session. It was also learnt that Thenucho had met with TR
Zeliang and some senior leaders on Saturday night to discuss the matter. Thenucho reportedly rushed to Guwahati Sunday morning to meet with some BJP leaders, sources said. However, there was no information about the outcome of Thenucho’s meeting in Guwahati. As reported, a senior NPF legislator had said that MLAs at a meeting held on March 18 “decided not to file nominations as BJP candidate is a consensus of BJP and NDPP.” Now that the party organisation has decided to contest the election against BJP, the onus now lies with NPF MLAs and how they wriggle out of a situation.

JCC also reminded that, in pursuance to the demand of the Nagas, it had submitted a memorandum on January 23, 2017 to the state government against conducting ULB polls till Nagaland Municipal Act, 2001 was reviewed/amended. NEW DELHI, MAR 20 (PTI): Amid a resurgence of Covid-19 cases in Southeast Asia and parts of Europe, experts in India feel that given the high vaccination coverage and immunity due to natural infection, any future waves are unlikely to have a major impact in the country. Some of them even said that the government should consider relaxing the mask mandate as the daily cases and deaths have remained low for a while. Dr Sanjay Rai, a senior epidemiologist at AIIMS and the principal investigator of Covaxin trials for both adults and children at the institute, said that SARS-CoV-2 is an RNA virus and mutations
DIMAPUR, MAR 20 (NPN): A day after NPF party had decided to field veteran Naga politician and NPF working president Thenucho Tunyi for the Rajya Sabha, Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) president K. Therie has asked NPF whether it was serious on filing the nominations “to defend and protect Nagaland’s identity, religion, culture and social practices, or, is it another act of camouflaging regionalism?” While pointing out that NPF had compro-
are bound to occur. Already over 1,000 mutations have occurred, although there are only five variants of concern. “India experienced a very devastating second wave last year, which was very unfortunate, but currently this is our main strength as natural infection provides better and longer duration of protection. Also, there is high vaccination coverage. Hence, severe impact of any future wave is unlikely,” Rai, professor at the Centre for Community Medicine at AIIMS, said. He said the Centre should continue with surveillance, including genomic sequencing, to monitor emergence of any future variant.
mised with “Hindutva/ communalism” by joining UDA, Therie, however, said that if NPF “realize their past mistakes and rise to defend and protect the secular image specially that of a Christian dominated state, it would be wonderful.” He said that the Congress in Nagaland has its own Constitution that was based on the principle of being regional in content and national in outlook. “We firmly uphold socialist, secular and democratic principles,” he added.
According to Dr Chandrakant Lahariya, an epidemiologist and public health specialist, the possibility of a fresh surge in India is low. “If we analyse data on seroprevalence, vaccination coverage and evidence on the spread of Omicron, it is logical to conclude that the Covid-19 epidemic in India is over. For India, the possibility of a fresh surge for many months and even with a new variant is low,” he said. “Because of the hybrid immunity after three waves of natural infection and a large proportion of adults receiving both doses of vaccine, the susceptible pool has come down drastically,” Lahariya said.
