Rio says Meluri district after delimitation
Correspondent
KO H I M A , M A R 2 1 (NPN): Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio acknowledged that the demand for upgrading Meluri sub-division to a full-fledged district was understandable and genuine, but that things would mature with time and justice would be delivered. He said this while replying to a discussion on the motion of thanks to governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi’s address on the second day of 13th session of Nagaland Legislative Assembly Monday. The issue of upgrading Meluri sub-division to a fullfledged district was raised by NPF legislators Imkong L Imchen and Yitachu. Rio informed that the population of Meluri subdivision is about 30,000 with 19,202 voters, out of which 13,466 were Pochury tribe members and 5,743 were Chakhesangs. said border disputes with Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Manipur and even Myanmar were being taken up positively. Asserting that some p o s i t ive d eve l o p m e n t s had taken place in solving the border dispute with Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur, Rio however said that though the AssamNagaland border dispute was sub-judice, attempts were being made to settle the matter outside the court through mutual understanding, adding that stakeholders of both sides like local leaders should sit and sort out the differences. Rio claimed of having taken up the border issue with the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and with respective governments of Assam and Manipur, claiming that the “sister States” were coming to a good understanding. He also termed the bandh call of Southern Angami Youth Organisation against Manipur as unfortunate and urged its leaders to come
forward to discuss the issue with the government. Referring to the issue of exploration of oil and natural gas raised by NPF member Dr Imtiwabang Aier, Rio said he took up the matter with Assam chief minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, who had on February 7 responded positively on sharing of royalties at DAB. On election to urban local bodies (ULB), he assured that the elections would be held as per the March 9 resolution, but added that intensive review of electoral rolls would be taken up prior to that. On power projects raised by NPF MLA Yitachu, Rio informed the House that the government was trying to complete smaller projects and take up new projects so that Nagaland could become self-sufficient in power and sell surplus power to other States. Responding to a query of Yitachu on the criteria for selecting VDB secretaries, Rio assured that the matter would be discussed and ad-
dressed accordingly. Further, due to financial crunch, he acknowledged that enough funds could not be provided to Department of Under Developed Areas (DUDA) but assured that more funds would be allocated to the department in the current year to take up some hostels for students from Eastern Nagaland area. On Yitachu’s concern over regularisation of higher education teachers, Rio claimed that the government intended to regularise the contract teachers, but since the court banned regularisation of the contractual appointees after NSF and other activists took the matter to court, regularisation could not be done. But, he assured that sincere efforts would be made to get the issue resolved. On Foothill Road TizitDimapur-Khelma-Silchar, he admitted that these areas were a rice bowl and hence the road was important, but said the border issue was causing delay.

Faculty members and students at the World Down Syndrome Day.
DIMAPUR: The World Down Syndrome Day 2022 was observed on March 21 by Department of Psychology of Livingstone Foundation International (LFI) College with Imsusenla Longkumer as a special guest. The day is observed every year on March 21. It is a global campaign which is observed annually to spread awareness about Down Syndrome. According to the official website of the United nations (UN), Down syndrome occurs when an individual has an extra partial (or whole) copy of
chromosome 21. It is not yet know why this syndrome occurs, but Down syndrome has always been a part of the human condition. In a press release, LFI College principal, Dr. R. K. Behera stated that the day was observed to create awareness about the genetic condition and further signify the uniqueness of such children born with the 21st chromosome which causes Down Syndrome affecting approximately 6,000 babies every year during birth. Sharing her experience, Imsusenla challenged
Ao Senden for realignment of... (From p-1) at 66.00 km Chungtiayimsen to Longjongkong (New Camp) on chainage 30.00 km, which presently measured 36 km in length. The Senden noted that national highways connecting major cities from point to point and feeder roads to other locations like villages from such highways were different in nature. Modern national highways and feeder roads therefore needed to be taken under separate approaches in concept and implementation, it suggested. Mentioning that major highways world over were aligned and constr ucted through the shortest possible distance between two points, at times even avoiding major towns and human habitation to reduce congestion and traffic jams, for economic efficiency and ease of trade & commerce, the Senden recalled that each road in Mokokchung district and Nagaland in the past decades
was generally in the category of “feeder roads” to which every habitation or village wished to be connected. However, they noted that with new 2-lane national highways now, a paradigm shift towards modern approach of speed and efficiency was required. Hence, they called for aligning each national highway through the shortest possible distance. They also insisted that villages and other habitations should be connected through a good network of feeder roads, to and from the national highways. Stating that the proposed realignment of the highway was a once-in-alifetime opportunity, which should not be squandered, Ao Senden declared reposing their trust on the chief minister’s astute leadership and sought his intervention on the matter as the highway would remain the lifeline of the people of that region.

The chief minister on Sunday had claimed that suspended Congress MLA Sashi Kanta Das will vote for BJP-led NDA candidates during the upcoming Rajya Sabha election in the state after a meeting with him. “This is being done to weaken the Opposition and democracy”, Saikia said, adding the chief minister allegedly said “all Congress and opposition MLAs are ready to join the BJP”. guidelines ‘Peace in eastern Ladakh essential Want 3 farm laws with reforms: SC panel on‘Need booster dose for
The Committee received submissions from 73 farmers organisations with 61 of them representing 3.3 crore farmers. Pointing out that the government appropriates farmers’ labour, income and wealth through the Essential Commodities Act, foreign trade barriers and that the farmers’ land is seized often without due compensation, Ghanwat said: “The farm laws did not address even a fraction of these unjust appropriations from farmers (as) most markets and property restrictions would have remained in place.” He, however, agreed that these laws would have reduced farmers’ losses by giving them greater market choice. Stating that farmers had faced a loss of $40 billion per year due to the Essential Commodities Act, Ghanwat said, the government should not intervene in deciding the rates
for produce and ideally the Essential Commodities Act should not be there. “If at all, then it needs massive reforms. We need to do away with archaic law.” It also said that states may be allowed some flexibility in implementation and design of the laws, with the prior approval of the Centre, so that the basic spirit of these laws for promoting effective competition in agricultural markets and creation of ‘one nation, one market’ is not violated. An important recommendation was an alternative mechanism for dispute settlement, through civil courts or arbitration mechanism, may be provided to the stakeholders. The gover nment should take urgent steps towards strengthening agricultural infrastructure; enabling aggregation, assaying and quality sorting of agri produce through cooperatives and Farmer
Delhi Riots: Order on Umar Khalids bail plea deferred again
NEW DELHI, MAR 21 (IANS): A Delhi court on Monday once again deferred the pronouncement of its order on the bail application of former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Umar Khalid in a case related to the alleged “larger conspiracy” behind Delhi riots. Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat of Karkardooma court, which was set to deliver its verdict in the matter on Monday, deferred it following the filing of written notes by the prosecution. The order which was to be originally pronounced on March 14 had been listed for March 21. On March 3, a bench had reserved its order after hearing the submissions of parties in the matter. Opposing the bail
Umar Khalid
plea, Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) Amit Prasad argued on the relevance of the speech given by Umar Khalid in Amravati in February 2020. He said the bail application was rejected on February 11, pointing out that the announcement of Donald Trump visiting India came on the same day. During the course of the hearing, Khalid’s counsel, opposing the charges under the Indian Penal
Code and UAPA, termed the charge sheet a “work of fiction”. He argued that the speech given by Khalid was about Gandhi, harmony, and the Constitution, and it is not a crime. After the submissions, the court had reserved the order. Khalid, one of the accused in the conspiracy case, has been booked under the anti-terror law -- Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The riots broke out in northeast Delhi in February 2020 after clashes between anti-CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) and pro-CAA protesters took a violent turn. The mayhem, which coincided with then US President Donald Trump’s maiden trip to India, saw over 50 people lose their lives and over 700 injured.

Apart from the broad recommendations, the report also gave different sets of recommendations regarding the three laws and another set related to agriculture price policies. The MSP and procurement support policy, as was designed for cereals during the Green Revolution time, needs to be revisited, the Committee said. For wheat and rice, there has to be a cap on procurement which is commensurate with the needs of the Public Distribution System (PDS). G h a n wa t , w h o i s also the President of the Swatantra Bharat Party, said he would bring a lakh supporters to Delhi in a few months in support of the demands or recommendations in the Committee report.
those under 60’
NEW DELHI, MAR 21 (IANS): Shiv Sena Member Priyanka Chaturvedi on Monday urged the health ministr y to issue clear guidelines on the booster dose of Covid-19 vaccine for those under 60 years of age. Raising the issue during the Zero Hour in the Rajya Sabha, Chaturvedi said as the world is returning to normalcy and international flights are resuming from March 27, several countries have come up with strict guidelines on vaccine doses that have been administered within a specific time period before allowing entry. In absence of clear guidelines, Indians will be left in the lurch, and hence the health ministry should come up with clear guidelines on it, she said. YSR Congress Member Ayodhya Rami Reddy raised the lack of adequate cold chain warehouses in Andhra Pradesh and his home district Guntur. Requesting financial assistance and infrastructure for cold chain warehouses, Reddy said it will help in export of famous Guntur chilli. At this, Chairman M. Venkaiah Naidu pointed out that Guntur has the maximum number of cold chain warehouses.

NEW DELHI, MAR 21 (IANS): Claiming that the now repealed three farm laws did not address a fraction of the unjust appropriations for the farmers, the Supreme Court appointed panel to study the laws said the repeal or long suspension of these laws would be unfair to the ‘silent’ majority who support the laws. Stating that farmers had faced a loss of $40 billion per year due to the Essential Commodities Act, one of the members, Anil Ghanwat who on Monday released the report to the media, said this overrides whatever subsidies that the farmers are given and suggested changes. The Supreme Court had appointed the committee in January 2021 and it had submitted the report in March 2021 but neither the Court released the report nor the Centre used it in any form. Ghanwat, the Shetkari Sanghatana leader, said the Committee wanted the three laws to stay but not in the given format, and hence, has given ample recommendations that, if implemented, will help in rectifying the situation. The broad recommendations said the repeal or a long suspension of these farm laws would be unfair to the ‘silent’ majority who support the laws.
for normalisation of ties with China’
NEW DELHI, MAR 21 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday apprised his Australian counterpart Scott Morrison about the situation in eastern Ladakh and emphasised that peace and tranquillity in the region is an essential prerequisite for normalisation of India’s ties with China. It was the second time in the last three days that India asserted that the relationship with China depends on the resolution of the pending issues in eastern Ladakh. Modi and Morrison held a virtual summit on Monday covering a wide range of issues relating to bilateral cooperation, regional security, developments in the Indo-Pacific and the crisis in Ukraine. At the 14th India-Japan summit on Saturday, New Delhi conveyed to Tokyo also that its ties with Beijing cannot be business as usual until peace is restored in the eastern Ladakh region. At a media briefing on Monday, Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla said both Modi and Morrison exchanged their perspectives on China. “The Prime Minister did refer to the Line of Actual Control in Ladakh; the

incidents of the previous year and he emphasised that peace and tranquillity in the border areas was an essential prerequisite for normalisation of relations with China,” he said. He said PM Morrison also gave a fairly detailed perspective of how he saw China and its actions in the region. Shringla said Morrison spoke especially about the situation in the South China Sea region. India and China have been engaged in talks to resolve the festering row in eastern Ladakh. On March 11, the two countries held the 15th round of high-level military dialogue to resolve the pending issues in the eastern Ladakh region but it did not produce any tangible outcome. The eastern Ladakh border standoff between the Indian and Chinese militaries erupted on May 5, 2020, following a violent clash in the Pangong lake
areas. Both sides gradually enhanced their deployment by rushing in tens of thousands of soldiers as well as heavy weaponry. As a result of a series of military and diplomatic talks, the two sides completed the disengagement process last year in the north and south banks of the Pangong lake and the Gogra area. Each side currently has around 50,000 to 60,000 troops along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the sensitive sector. On the South China Sea, India has also been pitching for the resolution of pending disputes under the framework of international law. China claims sovereignty over all of the South China Sea, a huge source of hydrocarbons. H owe ve r, s e ve r a l ASEAN member countries, including Vietnam, the Philippines and Brunei, have counterclaims.

OPINION/EDITORIAL
Nagaland Post VOL. XXXII NO. 105 DIMAPUR, TUESDAY, MARCH 22, 2022
An evolving opposition
N
ational politics in India is headed for an interesting development that has been in the offing since 2013 when the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) made history in its electoral debut in Delhi Legislative Assembly election. AAP emerged as second largest party after BJP but neither of the parties had an absolute majority. Consequently, AAP formed the government with support from the Congress, the very party that AAP tore to shreds in its virulent campaign. After failing to pass the Jan Lokpal Bill due to a lack of numbers in the Delhi Assembly, the AAP government resigned in February 2014 to seek a fresh and full mandate. In what was called a miraculous performance in 2015, the AAP had won 67 out of 70 seats in the Delhi Assembly, with a record vote share of 54%. The AAP’s winning ways continued undiminished in Delhi when it retained power for the third consecutive term by winning 62 of the 70 seats in 2020 to claim an absolute majority in the elections. The recent election in Punjab has provided the biggest moral boost to the AAP when it won 92 seats in the 117-member Punjab house. The win in Punjab was not a fluke but the result of consistency, planning and hard work. The people of Punjab have thrown out the dynastic Badals and the rudderless Congress in favour of the Kejriwal form of governance. All national parties are looking ahead at 2024 Lok Sabha election which Modi and the BJP are confident of a third consecutive win. The opposition is in disarray but this time that could prove to be a blessing in disguise since it could left no option but for the AAP, TMC and DMK etc to forge an alliance at the national level. After the 2021 West Bengal assembly election, when Mamata Banerjee saw off one of the most bitter and unequal fight with the BJP government, the media was all about an opposition led by Mamata. However, Mamata Banerjee, who won West Bengal for a record third time, could not steer the Trinamool Congress to capture power in Tripura earlier and now in Goa or Manipur, which have remained under the sway of the BJP. The impressive victory of AAP in Punjab has spurred many to think that the party (AAP) can be the real challenger to the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. It has become the first regional party to win an election in a second state and is poised to fill the space where the Congress may be diminished. Winning elections next in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh where the Assembly polls are due by end of this year may be seen as the next best political strategy for Kejriwal who has so far remained an outlier when it comes to being one of the main faces of the combined opposition. The landslide mandate for the AAP in Punjab will now make opposition leaders like Mamata Banerjee, K. Chandrasekhar Rao, M.K. Stalin, Sharad Pawar and Uddhav Thackeray sit up and take Kejriwal more seriously than before. They need Congress but have decided to go ahead for 2024 without the Congress since it has consistently failed to protect its turf against the BJP.
DailyDevotion Identified or Simply Interested? I have been crucified with Christ… —Galatians 2:20 The inescapable spiritual need each of us has is the need to sign the death certificate of our sin nature. I must take my emotional opinions and intellectual beliefs and be willing to turn them into a moral verdict against the nature of sin; that is, against any claim I have to my right to myself. Paul said, “I have been crucified with Christ….” He did not say, “I have made a determination to imitate Jesus Christ,” or, “I will really make an effort to follow Him” —but— “I have been identified with Him in His death.” Once I reach this moral decision and act on it, all that Christ accomplished for me on the Cross is accomplished in me. My unrestrained commitment of myself to God gives the Holy Spirit the opportunity to grant to me the holiness of Jesus Christ. “…it is no longer I who live….” My individuality remains, but my primary motivation for living and the nature that rules me are radically changed. I have the same human body, but the old satanic right to myself has been destroyed. “…and the life which I now live in the flesh,” not the life which I long to live or even pray that I live, but the life I now live in my mortal flesh— the life which others can see, “I live by faith in the Son of God….” This faith was not Paul’s own faith in Jesus Christ, but the faith the Son of God had given to him (see Ephesians 2:8). It is no longer a faith in faith, but a faith that transcends all imaginable limits— a faith that comes only from the Son of God.

Post-mortem
Speeches on Naga Republic Day celebration The Speech of Q. Tuccu, the Yaruiwo of the GPRN, on the 43rd Republic Day celebration on the 21st March, 2022 at the Council Headquarters (CHq), Hebron Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord! My dear countrymen, This day reminds us of our history and our freedom struggle which involves blood, sweat and tears. It was on this day that the Republic of Nagalim- Sovereign Christian Socialist Democratic Republic, was officially declared to assert the Nagas’ right to exist as a nation which reflects democratic principles, justice and liberty in keeping our God’s given history and political identity. We have come a long way and thank God we have not wavered in asserting our identity as a nation. Our commitment and dedication was never in doubt no matter what situation we encountered. Let us recommit ourselves to God who brought us this far. This is also the time to pay homage to our great leaders who inspired us and died as martyrs in their quest for giving us better future and freedom from bondage. As we open the pages of our history which was written in blood, sweat and tears, it reminds us how many thousands of Nagas, both civilians and revolutionary soldiers have sacrificed their precious fives. The Indian security forces also paid a heavy price, desperate to suppress our freedom struggle. But our freedom fighters stood their ground without giving up. Finally, a time comes when three top military generals of the Indian Army- Gen. Shankar Roy Chowdhury, Gen. JM (Johny) Mukherjee and Gen. KM Seth expressed the futility of seeking a military solution to the Naga issue. They drive home the hard hitting point to the Government of India (Gol) that the Naga issue cannot be solved through military means but only through political dialogue as the Naga
issue is political. This is how the 1997 Second Indo-Naga Ceasefire was brought about with a view to solving the Naga problem through peaceful means as both the parties entered into mutual understanding that military solution is not possible. When the lndo-Naga political talks started we acknowledged the presence of God as it was He who guided us all the way through giving us the courage and conviction that we should take the stand under any pressing circumstances to defend our political right. The Amsterdam meeting between the representatives of the Government of India and the National Socialist Council of Nagalim from July 9 to 11, 2002 was a huge milestone in the Indo-Naga political talks as the Government of India officially recognized the unique history and situation of the Nagas and agreed that the talks should proceed in an accommodative and forward- looking manner so that a lasting and honorable solution can be arrived at. It was in the year 2010 during the time of Mr. R S Pandey, the interlocutor that the Government of India submitted its first comprehensive official response to the NSCN in New Delhi, wherein it was proposed that the political dialogue should move forward on the principles of “Shared Sovereignty”. The political significance of sharing the sovereign power means to establish the new political arrangement that provide for an ‘’enduring inclusive new relationship with the Government of India”. However, there are forces at work to wreck the Framework Agreement. They are desperately trying to confuse the people that the Framework Agreement
speaks nothing of sovereignty, flag or integration. Needless to say, these three issues are the biggest determining factors to make the Naga Accord honourable and acceptable. Let us remain guarded and not be fooled by such a dogmatic political campaign. The ball is now in the court of India as we have made our stand very loud and clear that the Naga political solution cannot be finalized without the Naga national flag and the Naga constitution (Yehzabo) that represents the Naga political entity as a nation. My dear countrymen, The Government of India is trying to impose a Naga solution which is not based on the Framework Agreement. We should not allow such a well-planned treachery to bulldoze the will of the Naga people. Re-edited version of the 16 Point Agreement is at work. We have to face this situation boldly as our right is not being honoured. We should instil ourselves the courage and determination to stand by the Framework Agreement which is the only acceptable basis for the Naga solution. This is the time to take this decision in order to protect our identity and our history. We have to take the right decision at the right time. Nobody has the right to take away what belongs to us. When the Government of India recognises the uniqueness of the Naga history, the Naga solution should also be unique. No wonder, unique solution to Naga issue will come only the when the Government of India honour the Framework Agreement in letter and spirit. The bitter truth of the history is before us lest we commit another monumental blunder. KUKNALIM!
43rd Naga Republic Day message of The President of GPRN/NSCN,Gen. (Retd.) M.B Neokpao Konyak on the 21st March 2022. Greetings to my beloved Naga brothers and sisters on this auspicious occasion. I give all Glory and Honor to our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ for his gracious love, mercy and sustenance of our people. He alone is our refuge and strength. We recallthe sacrifices of thousands of Naga patriots in our long struggle, who laid down their lives in defence of our homeland. We honor them today. Friends and comrades, we recall the dawn of Naga nationalism, sacrifices, failures and achievements of the Naga people since the formation of Naga Club in 1918. To this day the aspirations of the Naga people to live with dignity and honor amongst nations remain a pivotal goal. The oppressors are mighty and strong but the political and historical right of a nation cannot be extinguished by sheer military might. Today, as we commemorate the historic date of our struggle and establishment of a People’s Republic government representing a distinct race and nation called Nagas, we are glad to see that the spirit of unity and brotherhood among the various Naga NPGs have returned in our society and that has strengthened the Naga people’s core political values. We are aware that the Naga movement has faced many destructive forces, within and outside, in the last eight decades. However, we have withstood with unbridled courage and strength because we know we are distinct and different with our God given right. We believe and fought as true nationalist. We will not give up. Without compromising on the people’s political aspiration, a peaceful progressive Naga society has become a dire necessity for the younger generation. In a fast paced changing world, we must retain the core values of our freedom struggle while enabling our children to cohabit with the best minds in the best institutions. I reiterate that the vision our forefathers envisioned was the best for us today and those of the future. We honor the well-thought-out landscape of our people’s journey ensured by our past leaders. Despite the self-motivated narratives among the national workers, the truth is out in the open for Nagas to clearly see who has misled the people in the last 25 years. I appeal to all Naga tribal Hohos, the Church and all apex civil societies to crawl out of the cocoon of fear and sentimentalism because they induce abject silence on crucial moments of history. This syndrome
has locked up many brilliant Naga minds. Wisdom comes from God and to many Nagas, clear reasoning on Naga issue is needed. In the last quarter century, through cumbersome narrative, many bright stars have fallen off the horizon. In doing so Naga society lost its intellectual output and vibrancy. NSCN is thankful to fearless Naga tribal Hoho leaders, village custodians and hereditary village chiefs, the church, mothers and student leaders, learned men and women for detaching incessant propaganda and sentimentalism, two very poor cousins of transparent Naga political blueprint, and embracing transparency and pragmatism. WC,NNPGs “Agreed Position” signed with GOI on 17th November 2017, has awaken and renewed the dormant patriotism in our land. We have demanded what is rightfully ours and GOI has accept the reality that we have the political and historical right. We believe and hope that Union of India and Nagaland will coexist and Nagas will experience enduring peace for our children, grandchildren and those after them. We will not lose our patriotism. We shall inculcate our children and hold onto the legacy of our Naga identity. Curse befall us should we lose our land and identity in the sea of unknown people. GPRN/NSCN honouring the sanctity of this auspicious day, reaffirm once again that, an honourable and acceptable solution of the Indo-Naga conflict is paramount. The WC,NNPGs and GOI have concluded negotiations, the Naga tribes and all sections of people agreed that “Agreed Position” and subsequent “Status Paper” is a fair political document reflecting Naga people’s will and aspiration ensuring the core essence of Naga pioneer’s political goal. We will not allow it to be defiled by any motivated agenda. A peaceful coexistence and enduring relationship with Union of India in consonance with contemporary political realities would be ushered in. A time has come for practical thoughts and actions to debunk rhetorical insinuations and excuses. GPRN/NSCN as a partner of Working Committee, Naga National Political Groups (WC,NNPGs) urges every Naga citizens to contemplate and seek the benevolent blessing of the Almighty God for an early solution of the Naga political issue. Let us stand strong and united to fulfil the destiny entrusted to us by our brave and wise pioneers. Happy Naga Republic Day! Kuknalim.
GPRN presidential speech 42nd Naga Republic Day, 2022. Gen. Niki Sumi (Retd.), The President, NSCN/GPRN. Greetings in the name of our Lord and the Savior Jesus Christ, on this auspicious day of the Naga Republic Day, Revolutionary salute to all martyrs irrespective of the prevalent divisions among us. On the outset, I would like to highlight the beginnings of Naga Nationalism, wherein NNC as the torch bearers tirelessly and unitedly worked for the rightful cause of the Nagas, Sadly due to some vested individuals in collusion with the enemy, engineered the Shillong Accord. Consequently, NSCN was formed to salvage the Naga Nation from damnation which was again fractured during 1987-1988, due to the diabolical open door policy of GOI which created confusion and disharmony among the National Workers, resulting in the split of 1988. Despite the division, NSCNIM went on to internationalize the Naga cause which gave exposure on a global level, That is a fact which is
to be publicly appreciated by one and all. The NSCN under the revolutionary Leadership of S.S Khaplang gave refuge and support to all the revolutionary compatriots across the Indo-Burma regions, filliping the rightful Naga cause as well as resulting in the agreements and accords of different nations such Karbi, Bodo accords. NSCN-IM’s parleys with GOI led to the signing of cease-fire and consequently due to situational compulsions NSCN-K entered the cease-fire. During the last 10 years of ceasefire, 11 NPG Groups have sprouted, all claiming to be the champions of the Naga cause, it is high time for all NPG Groups to stop confusing the people and come out in the open, that only unity can bring about a political settlement, taking along the voice of the Naga people. NPG’s along with all Nagas should stop beating around the bush and in unison either unitedly seek for a solution or with-
Message on occasion of 67th Republic Day of Federal Government of Nagaland by Vekronu Dozo, Kedage FGN Dear Naga Citizens, On this National Day in the annals of Naga National History, I take this privilege to share a few words with you all on behalf of the Federal Government of Nagaland and my own behalf. It was on this day Republic of Nagaland, established the Federal Government of Nagaland (KHUNAK NGÚ KHÜM) on 22/03/1956 was approved by the 1 Session Tatar Hoho FGN- these are authorities who read out the following Bible verses, Mathew 6:33, Rom 10:18, 1 Peter 2 9:10 Rom 8:33 and Zachariah 4:6 pray to Almighty God for Naga Nation and hoisted National flag at Parashan Rengma Region. Today I feel sad because instead of observing with joy and celebration, our people experience the suffering in the hands of Indians in the past and continue to be so ever today as India had been protected through Disturb Area Act (DAA) and Arms Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA) and so on. The art of NNC/FGN is ready to permanently solve the Indo- Naga Political conflict sincerely. The NNC/FGN ever upholds the Naga Sovereignty of our Nation and freedom of our people collectively and individually. Now, I call upon each and every one of you on this historic day to introspect ourselves, re-dedicates responsible citizens of the soil, our MOTHERLAND so that collectively the will of our people shall be fulfilled to glory, His name forever more. KUKNALIM
draw the ceasefire and end this ceaseless and futile rhetorics of a Naga political settlement. The Nagaland State Government starting from the Desk of the Chief Minister’s office to the Village council chairman and from bureaucracy to the IV grade labourers, mostly seem to be using the name of NPGs to shy away from their responsibilities to the people. For example, a IV Grade state government servant based in the villages would often make the lying excuse to his/her higher ups that he was engaged in helping the NPG’s. Naga leaders and intellectuals should deeply introspect as to how Nagaland state which was under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was transferred to Home Ministry, eroding our political rights and the prestige with which our political prisoners were honored has been downgraded. The government of India with all its military might and economic powers. competing
in the top echelons of global power would fare well from managing its internal affairs by restricting the unhealthy competition among its departments and security establishments, which negatively promotes selfish motives to earn personnel laurels against the Indian national interests becoming a herculean hurdle; promoting departmental/ agencies rivalry against Indian national interest which does not only augurs well for conflict resolutions or brotherly unification of India, espoused by Gandhiji. The Government of India’s step motherly treatment and the attitude of superiority complex; treating Nagas as adopted sons would be counterproductive only to reignite the spirit of Naga Nationalism, rather than heading towards an amiable and inclusive political solution. Religious organizations should show no favor or fear to any NPG’s in particular. but should instead stick to religious teachings and guidance
to bring about peace and unity among the Nagas. The Bible says Faith without action is dead; therefore, true believers should be ready to defend our nation, come what may as per the values of Christianity. In the past when communications were sparse, information of events taking place were confined to the particular village or tribe which led to the belief that one tribe had sacrificed more than the other, thereby different writers started coloring the Naga national history with hues of tribalism but in this day of information and technology where information is now in our fingertips, we should be mindful of the facts and concertedly give dues where it is due, irrespective of our tribal or political affiliations. Nagas as a nation should ponder the following events in our history: • The 6 Round Deadlock? • The formation of RGN and the consequent surrender?
• The NNC being condemned, leading to the formation of NSCN and the further split of 1988? Nagas should also be cognizant of the fact that the NPGs are always on the limelight✓when it comes to the blame game, but the matter of fact is that the causes, events and the players behind the scene are mostly over ground leaders. Historians should spell the truth without “isms” ; Calling a spade a spade. We, Nagas along with all human beings cannot run away from the fact that we are all mortals, therefore we should introspecting leave aside our individualistic interests and prioritize the Naga national cause for the coming generations. Under the dedication of Nagas for Christ and not only our Naga ‘lands’ for Christ should we, proceed towards a concerted effort to attain our inherent and inalienable political rights. Kuknalim.
The Speech of Yilow Humtsoe the Acting President of Naga National Council on the occasion of the 66th year of Naga Republic Day Celebration Dear Naga people, I take this privilege to address all the Nagas as we celebrate this occasion of the Naga Republic Day of 22nd March 2022, on this day in 1956 the Nagas were officially declared as a Republic people and nation with political and legal constitution as a historic declaration and proclamation. On this occasion I pray to God in salutation of our Naga Martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the Naga nation. May God Almighty bless their spirits as we remember them in prayer, and may blessings be upon their families on our National Day. Today I reiterate the stand of the NNC (Parent Body) that after fragmentation and division we resolved to stand and work for peace and Naga National unity to bring about political solution and prosperity in the region as desired by all the Nagas and people in the neighbouring regions, as this is the only way forward for peaceful resolution of our freedom. Therefore, once again I on behalf of the NNC (Parent
Body) appeal to the Naga Club, Forum for Naga Reconciliation and Global Naga Forum to take up the initiative and bring all the Naga groups to the table to work out the best possible solution for posterity. And the key point here is inclusivity of our down trodden Eastern Nagas as they were and are an integral part and parcel of our history, land and resources as one people and one Homeland. So if any group or groups neglect this fact and discard our people of Eastern Nagaland will be guilty of committing a very serious political blunder, and the leader or group will be held fully responsible for the political crime and will be answerable to the people now and for generations after. From the very beginning of our political struggle for freedom the NNC stood and fought for the whole and all of Nagas and Naga Inhabited areas as one Nagaland declared and proclaimed officially since the very inception of our struggle and movement for freedom of sovereignty.
The NNC will continue to reiterate the true history constantly until Nagas are integrated in reality, the fight will go on since Naga people were divided without any consultation or consent in 1953 by the late Jawaharlal Nehru and late U Nu the then Prime Ministers of India and Burma. However, till today the Naga people of those areas are cultivating their ancestral fields as people from the West cross the arbitrary boundary to go to the East side of their fields and vice versa, as inhabitants of both sides have their ancestral land, families and relatives across the arbitrary line of the boundary from time immemorial. And hence taking historical and ancestral facts out of context the boundary was laid without consent and context. Our people are one and so is our ancestral land and that binds us since time immemorial. Therefore Naga people cannot be separated as we are truly one people, one family and under one ancestral homeland called Nagaland as our history were and are one and same.
Our history were and are very clear and true and hence cannot be disputed, denied or erased. But on the part of the Nagas we must understand the reality of our past mistakes and blunder in political dealings and commitments which has resulted in decades of struggle, great loss of lives and untold tragedies. No group or groups however big or strong alone can bring freedom without the collective strength and power of National unity. Therefore, in conclusion the Naga National Council in brutal honesty would state that until and unless the Naga National workers of all the groups are united or sit together for final talk, there will be no final political solution or settlement but the struggle and movement will continue till the Naga people achieve the final Goal of recognition of their sovereignty. This is the reality all concerned must understand for final political settlement of the Naga problem. KUKNALIM.

member received the award for Khemka. Many of those who received the Padma awards were “unsung heroes”, including 125-yearold yoga practitioner Swami Sivananda. Members of the audience clapped as a barefeet Sivananda, dressed in
a simple white kurta and dhoti, knelt before Prime Minister Narendra Modi who promptly got up and bowed, touching the ground as he returned the greeting. These awards are given in various disciplines and fields such as art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, etc. The Narendra Modi government has been honouring many such “unsung heroes” who have been contributing to society in different ways with Padma awards since 2014 when it came to power for the first time. Among the dignitaries present on the occasion were Vice President Venkaiah Naidu and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. ‘Padma Vibhushan’ is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service; ‘Padma Bhushan’ for distinguished service of high order and ‘Padma Shri’ for

HYDERABAD, AMR 22 (AGENCIES): Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, popularly known as KCR, on Monday announced that he is in talks with political strategist Prashant Kishor “to bring a national change”, capping off months of attacks on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP which rules at the centre. “I am in talks with Prashant Kishor to bring a national change. on this. Who can have a problem with this? Why are they seeing him as a bomb? Why are they crying?” he said, speaking at a news conference in Hyderabad. “Prashant Kishor is my best friend for the last 7-8 years. He has never worked for money. He is not a paid worker,” KCR added. Kishor reportedly met KCR at his farmhouse outside Hyderabad last month, setting off speculation amid the Telangana chief minister’s efforts to cobble a front against the BJP ahead of the 2024 general elections. For months now, there has been a conspicuous escalation in KCR’s attacks on PM Modi and the BJP. Last month, when the Prime Minister visited Hyderabad for the launch of a statue of Saint Ramanujacharya, Rao skipped meeting him, citing health reasons.
NEW DELHI, MAR 21 (IANS): The Civil aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Monday said in the Rajya Sabha that air cargo has grown up to 19 per cent despite the Covid-19 pandemic. Responding to a question, he said that all Indian carriers entered a period of insolvency because of the Covid-19 but because of Atmanirbhar Bharat, Indian carriers are able to stand despite the pandemic. He also said that now the scheduled operators can fly from all destinations. Responding to the question of CPI Member John Brittas, the Minister further informed that in a period of two years, the Indian cargo traffic has grown to 19 per cent despite the pandemic which has enabled Indian cargo carriers to stand on their feet.
Children are not getting contemporary education in madrassas: K’taka Edn Min
BENGALURU, MAR 21 (AGENCIES): Karnataka Education Minister B.C. Nagesh on Monday said that children are not being provided contemporary education in madrassas. “If madrassas demand, we are ready to provide formal education there. We are also ready to impart uniform education to all. However, no decision has yet been taken,” Minister Nagesh said. A final decision in this regard would be taken after
discussion, he said. Madrassas are allocated funds from the Department of Minority Welfare. However, education of professional courses is not being given to children, he maintained. “Formal education is given at madrassas, we are trying to provide professional education. We will try to attempt to bring in appropriate education system in madrassas,” he said. Minister Nagesh had earlier stated that students belonging to minority com-
munity should not stay away from proper education. They should not stay away from modern contemporary education, he added. The new system will be adopted in few madrassas initially. “We will think on lines of minority students should also get contemporary education. Many of them are joining their wards to mainstream education. The number of parents getting their children admitted to madrassas are decreasing, he explained.
BARABANKI (UP), MARCH 21 (IANS): It has been just ten days since the UP Assembly results were announced and BJP MLAs are already displaying their attitude and arrogance. BJP MLA Dinesh Rawat, who won from Haidergarh Assembly seat, was heard telling people that those who did not vote for him, should not expect any favours from him. “These people should not come to me for any kind of help or assistance. I will help only those who have voted for me,” he is heard saying at a Holi Milan programme,” he said. A video clip of this speech has gone viral on the social media. Rawat had defeated his SP rival by a margin of over 25,000 votes. A senior BJP functionary, when contacted, said: “These new MLAs will take some time to settle down after their euphoric victory. However, we have been telling them to be humble and treat people with respect.”

NEW DELHI, MAR 21 (PTI): With the Gandhis engaging with G-23 leaders after their recent offensive in the wake of the party’s poll debacle, some of them may find a place in the decision-making process in the revamped Congress party in line with their demand for collective leadership. Sources said on Monday that some of these leaders may be accommodated in the Congress Working Committee or in a new body like the Parliamentary Board, which the G-23 had suggested for taking all policy decisions including finalising chief ministerial candidates and tie-ups with like-minded parties in states. The group is also reported to be seeking the ouster of some Rahul Gandhi loyalists from key AICC

This year a total of 128 Padma awards are being conferred, including two duo cases (in a duo case, the award is counted as one). The list of awardees comprises four Padma Vibhushan, 17 Padma Bhushan and 107 Padma Shri awards. As many as 34 of the awardees are women and the list also includes 10 persons from the category of Foreigners, NRI, PIO, OCI and 13 posthumous awardees. The second civil investiture ceremony is scheduled to be held on March 28. Sources said one or more may be shifted in order to placate the dissident group. After the renewed demands by the ‘Group of 23’ calling for collective leadership and strengthening the party, the sources said the Congress top brass is working on a resolution plan with these leaders. Party sources said during Jawaharlal Nehru’s time, the Parliamentary Board was an important body of the Congress party and used to take key policy decisions. The G-23 leaders have also called for talks with like-minded parties to take

Kaito Aye, participating in the debate, remarked that in his long inning in the NLA, he termed the Governor’s address presented in the 11th session of 13th NLA as one of the best ever without bias to any department. Kaito said that the Governor’s Address indicated the success of the government’s policies and its activities which shows the commitment of the government to take the state forward in all-round development. NPF MLA Dr Chumben Murry highlighted that though the state was uniquely placed, the long-drawn insurgency issue, lack of revenue and dependency on the Centre for funds, had become a great disadvantage. On the allocation of reserved seats for women in ULBs, he suggested that any formula for the reservation should be comprehensive of the whole duration that will be imposed, i.e. for 15 years or three terms. Advisor Horticulture and Bor-
der Affairs, Mhathung Kithan said the Governor’s Address contained the accumulated achievements of the government, therefore, he endorsed the address in totality. On Naga political issue, he called upon all sections of the society to work together for an early settlement that is acceptable, honorable, transparent, and inclusive. In his concluding remarks, Rio said the legislators and political parties had made efforts to have consultations with tribal bodies, civil society organisations, NGOs and other stakeholders for an early solution to the Naga political issue. He asserted that the state government exhibited unity to form an opposition less government when it came to Naga issue. Meanwhile, asserting that no amendment sought in the governor’s address showed the true essence of opposition-less government, the chief minister sought to adopt the motion of thanks. The motion was adopted through a voice vote.

Rio says Meluri district after delimitation
(From p-1) He was replying to NPF NPF MLA, Dr Imtiwabang Aier’s question on completion of Foothill Road. Rio regretted that the road had taken a backseat because of fund constraints, but mentioned that the government had pleaded with Union Ministry of Road Transport & Highways to declare the road as a national highway, which required the approval of Prime Minister. As per the FFC report, LH said some of the “hitherto existing” LBCA leaders violated at least 28 norms/ procedures. Finding no opportunity for amicable settlement, the hoho said it had on March 18, 2022 convened a final coordination meeting of LH, social organizations, Lotha elder theologian intellectuals, LBCA leaders and its affiliated organs, Church pastors and leaders to deliberate and to amicably settle the issues. Thus, the hoho said the erstwhile LBCA administration was “no longer mandated” and hence the LH has banned all activities of the disbanded LBCA organization. Indian Oil & Gas Public Sector Undertakings had imported approximately less than 1 per cent of its total crude oil import from Russia in the year 2021-2022 (till January). India imported only 0.419 million metric tonnes (mmt) of crude oil from Russia, as compared to overall crude oil imports of 175.900 mmt (in April-January this fiscal). In the current situation of high volatility in global energy markets, the Government of India is closely monitoring the situation. NEW DELHI, MAR 21 (PTI): Oil minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Monday allayed fears of short supply of crude oil amid the RussiaUkraine conflict and said that crude oil imports from Russia are miniscule at just 0.2 per cent of total such imports till January this fiscal. “About the increased oil import concerns...we require total of five million barrels per day. Sixty per cent of it comes from Gulf. As far as oil imports are concerned from Russia, contrary to what played up in media, it is miniscule,” the minister said. Kyiv refuses demands to surrender Mariupol
LVIV, MAR 21 (AP): Ukrainian officials defiantly rejected a Russian demand that their forces in Mariupol lay down arms and raise white flags Monday in exchange for safe passage out of the besieged strategic port city. Even as Russia intensified its attempt to pummel Mariupol into surrender, its offensive in other parts of Ukraine has floundered. Western governments and analysts say the broader conflict is grinding into a war of attrition, with Russia continuing to bombard cities. In the capital, Kyiv, a shopping center in the densely populated Podil district near the city center was a smoldering, flattened ruin Monday after being hit the day before by shelling that killed eight people, according to emergency officials. The force of the explosion shattered every window in a neighboring high-rise. Artillery boomed in the distance as firefighters picked their way through the destruction. Ukrainian authorities

also said Russia shelled a chemical plant in northeastern Ukraine, sending toxic ammonia leaking into the air, and hit a military training base in the west with cruise missiles. The encircled southern city of Mariupol on the Sea of Azov has seen some of the worst horrors of the war, under Russian pounding for more than three weeks, in a brutal assault that Ukrainian and Western officials have called a war crime. Strikes hit an art school sheltering some 400 people only hours before Russia’s
offer to open corridors out of the city in return for the capitulation of its defenders, according to Ukrainian officials. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said it was not clear how many casualties there were. “They are under the rubble, and we don’t know how many of them have survived,” he said in a video address, vowing that Ukraine would “shoot down the pilot who dropped that bomb.” Russian Col. Gen. Mikhail Mizintsev had of-
fered two corridors — one heading east toward Russia and the other west to other parts of Ukraine — in return for Mariupol’s surrender. He did not say what Russia planned if the offer was rejected. The Russian Ministry of Defense said authorities in Mariupol could face a military tribunal if they sided with what it described as “bandits,” the Russian state news agency RIA Novosti reported. Ukrainian officials rejected the proposal even before Russia’s deadline of 5 a.m. Moscow time (0200GMT) for a response came and went. “There can be no talk of any surrender, laying down of arms,” Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Irina Vereshchuk told the news outlet Ukrainian Pravda. “We have already informed the Russian side about this.” Mariupol Mayor Piotr Andryushchenko also quickly dismissed the offer, saying in a Facebook post he didn’t need to wait until the morning deadline
to respond and cursing at the Russians, according to the news agency Interfax Ukraine. The strike on the art school was the second time in less than a week that officials reported an attack on a public building where Mariupol residents had taken shelter. O n We d n e s d ay, a bomb hit a theater where more than 1,000 people were believed to be sheltering. At least 130 people were reported rescued Friday, but there has been no update since then. Mariupol officials said at least 2,300 people have died in the siege, with some buried in mass graves. City officials and aid groups say Russian bombardment has cut off Mariupol’s electricity, water and food supplies and severed its communications with the outside world, plunging the remaining residents into a chaotic fight for survival. “What’s happening in Mariupol is a massive war crime,” EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said Monday.
Russian troops ‘open fire on protesters’ K H E R S O N, M A R 2 1 (AGENCIES): Russian soldiers have opened fire on civilian protesters in the captured Ukrainian city of Kherson and wounded at least one person, local media has reported, as Vladimir Putin’s troops stepped up their war of attrition against civilians by shelling the city of Odessa. Footage taken in Kherson and shared by media with links to the Ukrainian military, showed one man bleeding heavily from the leg after being shot during a demonstration. Russian forces used firearms as well as stun grenades to try and disperse the protesters, the Interfax news agency reported. It came as Vladimir Putin’s warships opened fire on civilian areas in the Black Sea port city of Odesa today, marking the first time residents have been targeted. Officials said several houses were destroyed and a fire sparked, but there was no immediate word on casualties. Missiles also rained down on the ‘Retroville’ shopping centre in northern Kyiv on Monday - killing

eight people amid fears dozens more were buried in the rubble with emergency workers searching for them. CCTV footage from the city of Kharkiv also emerged showing a strike on a supermarket queue last week. And in the heavily besieged city of Mariupol, more than 300 miles to the east of Odesa, officials rejected a Russian demand that fighters protecting the city surrender in return for letting an estimated 300,000 trapped civilians evacuate. Pyotr Andryushenko - an adviser to the city’s mayor - said Russian promises could not be trusted and that troops defending the city were determined to fight
‘down to the last man’. Kherson has been the scene of near-daily protests since it became the first major city to fall to Russian forces early during the war. On Sunday, demonstrators managed to turn back a military convoy after blocking a road. Putin’s men have been accused of firing ‘warning shots’ before, but until now had not opened fire directly on activists. Ukraine says thousands of civilians have been killed by Russian forces since Vladimir Putin gave the order to attack on February 24, with his men stepping up indiscriminate shelling of cities after an initial offensive stalled.

Kuwait, among world’s hottest JAHRA (KUWAIT), MAR 21 (AP): It was so hot in Kuwait last summer that birds dropped dead from the sky. Sea horses boiled to death in the bay. Dead clams coated the rocks, their shells popped open like they’d been steamed. Kuwait reached a scorching temperature of 53.2 degrees Celsius (127.7 degrees Fahrenheit), making it among the hottest places on earth. The extremes of climate change present existential perils all over the world. But the record heat waves that roast Kuwait each season have grown so severe that people increasingly find
it unbearable. By the end of the century, scientists say being outside in Kuwait City could be life-threatening — not only to birds. A recent study also linked 67% of heat-related deaths in the capital to climate change. And yet, Kuwait remains among the world’s top oil producers and exporters, and per capita is a significant polluter. Mired in political paralysis, it stayed silent as the region’s petrostates joined a chorus of nations setting goals to eliminate emissions at home — though not curb oil exports — ahead of last fall’s UN climate summit in Glasgow.

DUBAI, MAR 21 (AP): Saudi Arabia said Monday it “won’t bear any responsibility for any shortage in oil supplies to global markets” after attacks by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels affected the kingdom’s production. The announcement comes as the kingdom remains lockstep with OPEC and other oil-producing countries in a deal limiting increases in production and as energy prices rise higher amid Russia’s war on Ukraine. Already, Americans
have had to pay recordbreaking prices at the pump for gasoline. The state-run Saudi Press Agency quoted the Foreign Ministry as saying that “the international community must assume its responsibility to maintain energy supplies” in order to “stand against the Houthis.” The repeated Houthi attacks will affect “the kingdom’s production capacity and its ability to meet its obligations,” the statement added, threatening the “security and stability of energy supplies to global markets.” Benchmark Brent crude oil
stood at over USD 112 a barrel in trading Monday. On Sunday, Yemen’s rebels launched a series of attacks targeting the kingdom’s oil and natural gas production. The Saudi Energy Ministry had said the attacks at the Yanbu petrochemicals complex on the Red Sea coast led to a temporary drop in oil output. The drone and missile strikes ignited a fire at a tank at a petroleum distribution in the Saudi port city of Jiddah and affected production at the gas facility in Yanbu.

ollywood star Robert Pattinson’s superhero movie ‘The Batman’ has minted over $300 million in North America. That feat is not surprising because March has been relatively light in terms of new releases. But even though there hasn’t been much competition, ‘The Batman’ has managed to score impressive week-to-week holds. The movie collected $36.8 million from 4,302 theatres between Friday and Sunday, representing only a 45 per cent decline from last weekend, reports variety.com. Those ticket sales push ‘The Batman’ past $300 million in North America, making the comic book adaptation the second pandemic-era movie to cross that benchmark after ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’. At the international box office, the film opened in China, where 43 per cent of the country’s theatres are closed due to a Covid resurgence to a muted $12.1 million. In total, ‘The Batman’ added $49.1 million from 76 overseas markets,

HAMILTON, MAR 21 (IANS): Pakistan clinched their first victory of the 2022 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, beating West Indies by eight wickets in a match reduced to 20-overseach due to morning raid, to register their first points on the board. However, the result was a big dent in the West Indies’ hopes of qualifying for the semi-finals. Earlier, a brilliant performance by their spinners helped Pakistan restrict West Indies to 89/7 before the batters kept their calm to seal an eight-wicket victory in Hamilton. Chasing a target of 90 in 20 overs, Muneeba Ali and Sidra Amin provided a solid platform for Pakistan. The latter was dismissed in the sixth over, with Afy Fletcher knocking her over for eight as she tried to up the ante. But Muneeba, joined by skipper Bismah Maroof, would then stitch together a vital 35-run stand while keeping the required rate under control to take Pakistan closer to their first CWC22 victory. Muneeba would get a second chance, being dropped for 35, but could

not make the most of her opportunity. She would perish on the very next delivery, attempting a wild slog against Shakera Selman to be dismissed for 37. Another short and crucial unbeaten stand of 33 runs between Maroof and Omaima Sohail though sealed the deal for Pakistan. Maroof remained unbeaten on 20 while Sohail scored 22 as celebrations erupted in the Pakistan camp with an eight-wicket victory and
seven balls remaining in the bank. In the first innings of the match, Pakistan’s spinners were in full flight as West Indies were restricted to 89/7 after 20 overs in Hamilton. Nida Dar, in particular, was mighty impressive, registering figures of 4/10 in her four overs. It was a steady start for West Indies in the Powerplay, with Deandra Dottin and Hayley Matthews helping their side to 19/0.
Barcelona humiliate Real Madrid with 4-0 rout at the Bernabeu

M A D R I D, M A R 2 1 (AGENCIES): PierreEmerick Aubameyang scored twice as a rejuvenated Barcelona gave a football masterclass to inflict a humiliating 4-0 defeat on rivals Real Madrid on Sunday, thrashing Carlo Ancelotti’s LaLiga leaders on their own ground. A sold-out Santiago Bernabeu stadium watched silently as a much-improved Barca under the command of new coach Xavi Hernandez dominated ‘El Clasico’ from the start. With Ousmane Dembele and Ferran Torres exposing Real’s defensive frailty on the flanks, Barca
opened the scoring in the 29th minute with an Aubameyang header from a Dembele cross. Barca kept up the tempo against a disorganised and lifeless Real Madrid and extended their lead when defender Ronald Araujo headed in from a Dembele corner. Ancelotti tried to change the dynamic, making two substitutions during the break but Barca scored in the first minute of the second half with an angled shot from Torres after a backheel by Aubameyang. Five minutes later, former Manchester City forward Torres returned
the favour, teeing up ex-Arsenal striker Aubameyang for his second goal. Barca had several opportunities to extend their lead, but Real goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois avoided any further humiliation. With Real Madrid sitting comfortably on top of the standings with 66 points, Sunday’s Clasico was never likely to determine the fate of LaLiga’s title race. But pride was on the line and Xavi’s much improved Barca showed that their recent return to form was genuine.
Pakistan though would strike immediately after, with Matthews attempting a big heave against Fatima Sana and holing out to the backward point for 1. Dottin also could not convert her good start to a big score, being caught and bowled by Nida Dar for 27 off 35 deliveries. Skipper Stafanie Taylor and Shemaine Campbelle tried to steady the ship for their side. However, their woes against spin would
continue, with the batters looking all at sea against the tweakers. Campbelle would be outfoxed by Dar, running down the wicket but failing to get to the pitch of the delivery and Sidra Nawaz would then do the job to stump Campbelle for 7. Chedean Nation also failed to contribute, with Omaima Sohail dismissing her for a duck. The struggles would continue as Pakistan ended up scalping an incredible team hattrick. Dar scalped the wickets of Kycia Knight (8) and Chinelle Henry (0) in the 16th over before Stafanie Taylor was caught and bowled by Nashra Sundhu for 18 on the first ball of the next over. These wickets at regular intervals helped Pakistan restrict their opponents to an under-par score, though Fletcher chipped in with a handy seven-ball 12* at the end. BRIEF SCORES: West Indies 89/7 in 20 overs (Deandra Dottin 27, Nida Dar 10/4), Pakistan 90/2 in 18.5 overs (Muneeba Ali Siddiqui 37, Bismah Maroof 20*, Omaima Sohail 22*, Shakera Selman 16/1).
L O N D O N, M A R 2 0 (AGENCIES): Striker Son Heung-min scored twice as Tottenham Hotspur rose to fifth in the Premier League table with a 3-1 win over West Ham United on Sunday that left them three points off the top four and the chance of Champions League football next season. The afternoon got off to a terrible start for Hammers defender Kurt Zouma when he steered Harry Kane’s low centre to Son into the net in the ninth minute, the 10th own goal of the season that Spurs have benefited from. It got worse for the French centre back midway through the first half as Son made it two for Spurs, collecting a defencesplitting pass from Kane before firing a left-foot shot that glanced Zouma’s outstretched leg before looping into the net. Said Benrahma pulled one back for West Ham in the 35th minute, twisting his body to side-foot a volley from a flick-on into the net. West Ham weathered a couple of early second-

half chances before finding their rhythm, and they should have levelled after a sweeping move that ended when Michail Antonio volleyed over the bar in the 56th minute. H av i n g s u f f e r e d through a poor spell, Spurs got their passing back on track and recent signing Dejan Kulusevski curled an effort just over and wide as the home side began to take back control. Harry Kane missed an even better chance, somehow blazing the ball over after a superb pass from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg left
him with only the keeper to beat. Son came to the rescue again in the 88th minute, chasing down a long ball from Kane and firing home to send Spurs fifth in the table, three points behind North London rivals Arsenal, who are currently fourth on 54 points and have a game in hand over Spurs. The result was a bitter blow for David Moyes’ West Ham as they slipped to seventh in the table, with their chances of Champions League football next season rapidly fading.

Dybala set to leave Juve on free transfer
TURIN, MAR 21 (IANS): Juventus stalwart Paulo Dybala will not be extending his current contract and is set to leave the club in the summer, according to reports. Dybala, 28, is out of contract in the summer and his agent, Jorge Antun reportedly met with Juventus’ executive team on Monday, but talks failed to reach an agreement over a contract extension, how-
ever, paving the way for the Argentina international to leave Turin on a free transfer. Dybala and Juventus had been close to agreeing on an extension in 2021, with the vice president, former player Pavel Nedved, telling reporters the club was “very close” to a new deal. But Juventus eventually withdrew their lucrative offer, later making a new proposal with a lower
salary, which Dybala’s representatives did not accept. The Argentina international joined the club in 2015 from Palermo. He has helped the club to win five league titles, four Coppa Italia trophies and the Supercoppa Italiana three times. In total Dybala has made 283 appearances for Juventus, scoring 113 goals. Only ten players in the history of the club have scored more.

Fritz stuns Nadal to clinch Indian Wells title
INDIAN WELLS, MAR 21 (IANS): American Taylor Fritz claimed the biggest paycheque of his tennis career, winning his maiden ATP Masters 1000 title by defeating Spanish stalwart Rafael Nadal 6-3, 7-6(5) in the BNP Paribas Open final on Monday (IST). It was 21-time Grand Slam-winner Nadal’s first defeat of the 2022 season, while it was the biggest career win for the 24-year-old American, who lifted his second ATP Tour trophy. The San Diego native, who nearly pulled out ahead of match with an ankle injury, launched a full-scale attack on the 35-year-old Nadal to deny him a recordtying 37th ATP Masters 1000 title and end his personal-best 20-match win streak this season. After twisting his ankle in the semifinal win over Russian Andrey Rublev on Saturday, Fritz further aggravated the problem in his warm-up ahead of the final.
Taylor Fritz
In fact, Fritz’s team advised him not to play the final as he risked doing irreparable damage to the ankle. His coach Paul Annacone told Tennis Channel that, “All three of his team, me, Mike Russell and (fitness trainer) Wolfgang Oswald all said ‘Do not play this match’. He said ‘I am playing. I can do this. I want to get out on the court with Rafael and see if I can overcome.’ “ After a quick start from the American, it was Nadal who was doing all the catching up. Fritz raced to a 4-0
lead in the opener before Nadal took a medical timeout in between sets. After leaving the court for treatment in between sets, the Spaniard edged in front in the second with the first break. But Fritz broke back immediately and then survived four break points to lead 3-2. Fritz, playing in his first Masters 1000 final, became the first American men’s champion at Indian Wells since Andre Agassi in 2001 and the youngest Indian Wells men’s champ since Serbian Novak Djokovic in 2011. The victory equals Fritz’s best career win in terms of ATP Rankings, matching his result over then-World No. 4 Alexander Zverev in the 2021 Indian Wells quarters. But this was Fritz’s first win in nine matches against the ‘Big Three’ -- Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic --, levelling his ATP headto-head record at 1-1 against Nadal.

Po l i s h t e n n i s s t a r Iga Swiatek won her 11th straight match on way to defeating Greece’s Maria Sakkari 6-4, 6-1 to lift the 2022 BNP Paribas Open trophy at Indian Wells on Monday (IST). The victor y in the WTA 1000 event has given the 20-year-old player a jump of two places, to World No.2, in the latest rankings released on Monday. Swiatek’s dominance at the WTA 1000 events this season continued unabated
here, as the No.3 seed became the first Polish woman to claim the title at Indian Wells, surpassing the result by 2014 BNP Paribas Open runner-up Agnieszka Radwanska. Swiatek will also tie former world No.2 Radwanska as the highest-ranked Polish player in history. With the win, which came in just 80 minutes, Swiatek also became the first woman to reach 20 match-wins this season. Swiatek’s victory also marks her career-best 11th straight match-win on the WTA Tour, with that streak coming at the first two WTA 1000 events of the season. Swiatek claimed the title last month at the WTA 1000 Qatar Open in Doha. By backing that crown up at her next event in Indian Wells, she improves to an undefeated 11-0 at WTA 1000-level so far this year.

Manchester City players celebrates after scoring against Southampton in FA Cup.
L O N D O N, M A R 2 1 (IANS): Manchester City face an FA Cup semifinal against Liverpool after both sides won their quarterfinals on Sunday night. City won 4-1 away to Southampton in an entertaining match that was in the balance until just after the hour mark. Raheem Sterling put City ahead after Kevin de Bruyne’s cross wasn’t dealt with in the 12th minute. It could have been 2-0 when Ilkay Gundogan hit the post, but Southampton recovered after a period of City dominance and levelled in first-half injury time when Aymeric Laporte screwed a low cross into his own goal. De Bruyne put Pep Guardiola’s side back in front from the penalty spot in the 62nd minute after Gabriel Jesus had been fouled. Phil Foden and Riyad Mahrez then assured the win with goals in the 75th and 78th minutes, Xinhua reports. Diogo Jota poked home the only goal of the game to give Liverpool a hard-fought but deserved 1-0 win away to Nottingham Forest, who had
soaked up a lot of pressure before the goal. The last time Liverpool played Forest in the FA Cup was at the Hillsborough Stadium in 1989, which was the scene of a tragedy in which 97 Liverpool fans lost their lives, and the home side paid homage to the event 33 years ago which was the catalyst for the modernization of the English game. Crystal Palace eased into the semifinals with a 4-0 win at home to Everton. The away side had the best of the opening stages, but everything changed when Marc Guehi celebrated his England call-up with the 25th minute opener, and the game was virtually over when Jean-Philippe Mateta doubled Palace’s lead before half-time. Wilfried Zaha and Will Hughes ended the rout with further goals in the 79th and 87th minutes. Crystal Palace will play Chelsea, who booked their place in the semifinals on Saturday with a relatively comfortable 2-0 win away to Middlesbrough, thanks to first-half goals from Romelu Lukaku and
Hakim Ziyech. Lukaku was left with a simple finish from Mason Mount’s cross, while Ziyech hit a nasty dipping shot to double Chelsea’s lead against a rival that never gave up, but failed to get a shot on target. In the Premier League, an own goal from Kurt Zouma and two from Son Heung-min saw Tottenham win 3-1 at home to West Ham, who looked tired after their marathon Europa League win against Sevilla on Thursday. Spurs were 2-0 up by the 24th minute, and although Said Benrahma pulled a goal back from a corner, Son sealed the win with his second goal two minutes from time. Arsenal recovered from their midweek defeat to Liverpool with a 1-0 at Aston Villa on Saturday, with Bukayo Saka netting the game’s only goal. Goals from Timothy Castagne, who returned after three months out through injury, and James Maddison gave Leicester a 2-1 home win over Brentford, who netted a late consolation from Yoane Wissa.
