NESO urges Shah to intervene in deadlock Correspondent

IMPHAL, MAR 29: Supply of fuel has been adversely affected in most retail outlets across Manipur as stocks of petroleum products depleted fast owing to non-arrival of oil tankers from outside the State as a result of the indefinite bandh called by Southern Angami Peoples’ Organisation (SAPO). The bandh entered its ninth day on Tuesday. Most fuel stations opened as usual on Tuesday, but with the notice “Petrol stock nil” and provided only diesel. Long queues were seen at the few fuel stations that still had petrol in stock during the day. According to some staff of the fuel stations, petrol stocks dried up due

to non-arrival of oil tankers from outside. However, they added that diesel was still available. It has been almost a week since the oil tankers reached the State Capital. Normal arrival of petroleum products in the State was severely hit owing to the indefinite bandh call given by Southern Angami Public Organization (SAPO), which led to suspension of plying of all kinds of Imphal-bound vehicles. The Manipur government had already made arrangements

for procurement of petroleum products from Assam through Imphal-Jiribam section of NH-37. Sources said loaded oil tankers and bullet tankers (bulk LPG carriers) escorted by security forces had left Khatkhati (Assam) and were on the way. They were likely to reach Imphal in the next one or two days. Hundreds of empty oil tankers had also left Imphal along NH-37 for Assam a few days ago. NESO: The North East Students’ Organisation

(NESO) on Tuesday urged the Centre to intervene in the prevailing situation along the Nagaland-Manipur border. In a letter to Union Home minister Amit Shah, NESO chairman Samuel B. Jyrwa and secretary general Sinam Prakash Singh, said that the NH-2 bandh imposed by Southern Angami Peoples’ Organisation has not only cut off the life line of Manipur but has also affected the lives and livelihood of innocent people also the situation in adjoin-

ing areas of Manipur was deteriorating. While stating that people-to-people dialogue should be encouraged so that people on the ground do not suffer, NESO said authorities concer ned should take proactive initiative to ways to resolve the issue. NESO therefore urged the Government of India to take proactive steps to control the situation from further deterioration and also to intervene by taking the initiative to solve the issue and to bring all the parties involved to the negotiating table so that the issue can be resolved amicably. NESO comprises the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF), All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), Twipra Students’ Federation (TSF), All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU), Garo Students’ Union (GSU), Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) and All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU).

Nagaland records highest decadal urban population growth Correspondent KO H I M A , M A R 2 9 (NPN): With 69%, Nagaland recorded the highest decadal growth of urban population in the country as against the national growth rate of 21%. The proportion of urban population in 1971 was only 10% of the State’s total population, which reached 17.21% in 1991 and jumped to 28.97% in 2011. However, as per the 2011 census, the distribution of urban population was not uniform in the State, with the concentration being higher in few towns like Kohima and Dimapur that alone ac-

counted for more than 55% of the State’s total urban population. Migration from rural to urban areas has contributed largely to the rapid growth of urban population in the State. In 1981, the urban population of the State was 1.2 lakh, which raced to 3.5 lakh in 2001. This population migration has seriously impacted the environment, besides causing stress on the limited urban services and infrastructure, leading to spike in urban poverty and unemployment. From 2001 to 2011, the population of Dimapur increased by more than 59 and of Kohima by 56%.

Now, experts fear that if urban population continue to increase at the current rate, especially in Kohima and Dimapur, the towns and cities will be infested with problems of congestion in two to three decades and urban resources will be under huge pressure. And in the absence of adequate supply of basic urban amenities, all the prevailing urban socio-economic, political and health issues, including pollution and drinking water shortage, will only multiply, they contend. Meanwhile, the 2011 revealed that agriculture employed more than 70% of Nagaland’s population.

However, with the migration of rural population to urban areas over the years, the farming community is slowly diminishing and there has been a decline in agricultural production and area. Confirming this, head of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) of Tseminyu and Kohima Dr Ruokuovilie Mezhatsu told Nagaland Post that manpower was the ultimate factor that was responsible for low agriculture produce. While agricultural mechanisation tools were available, he said only few of them were feasible in Nagaland due to its hilly terrain.

Ukraine, Russia hold new talks aimed at ending the fighting KYIV, MAR 29 (AP/ AG E N C I E S ) : A f a c e to-face meeting between Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskky and Russia’s Vladimir Putin is ‘possible’ following the completion of the latest round of peace talks in Turkey’s Istanbul, an Ukrainian negotiator said Tuesday evening. The first face-to-face talks in two weeks between Russia and Ukraine began Tuesday in Turkey, raising flickering hopes there could be progress toward ending a war that has ground into a bloody campaign of attrition. Ahead of the meeting in Istanbul, the Ukrainian president said his country is prepared to declare its neutrality, as Moscow has demanded, and is open to compromise over the contested eastern region of Donbas-- comments that might lend momentum to negotiations. But he warned the “ruthless war” continued, and even

the negotiators assembled, Russian forces hit an oil depot in western Ukraine and a government building in the south. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told the two sides that they had a “historic responsibility” to stop the fighting. “We believe that there will be no losers in a just peace. Prolonging the conflict is not in anyone’s interest,” Erdogan said, as he greeted the two delegations seated on opposite sides of a long table. Also in the room was Roman Abramovich,

owner of Chelsea Football Club. “The results of today’s meeting are sufficient for a meeting at the leaders’ level,” Ukrainian negotiator David Arakhamia said. Russia said it had held ‘meaningful; talks with Ukraine and has decided to ‘radically’ cut down military activity in capital Kyiv and Chernihiv - which is in northern Ukraine. Moscow’s declaration is being seen as the first major breakthrough after multiple rounds of ceasefire and peace talks since Russia invaded Ukraine last month.

functional: ANCSU to State govt DIMAPUR, MAR 29 (NPN): All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANCSU) has reiterated its appeal to the state government to make the scholarship nodal cell fully functional without any further delay. In a memorandum addressed to the state chief secretary, ANCSU president Toito D Chishi and general secretary Tenyesinlo Bukh stated that the students were hopeful when government notified the common scholarship portal. However, they lamented that streamlining all kinds of scholarship schemes scattered in various departments was yet to brought under one

cell. ANCSU maintained that common scholarship nodal cell being constituted “only in the paper” and not in the department “clearly” indicated the negligence of the state government to deliver justice for the student community. Expressing its discontentment, ANCSU has cautioned that the union would not remain silent when the government turned a blind eye to the welfare of the students. The union has, therefore, appealed to the government to take up the matter on priority and pay heed to the genuine demand of students by making the nodal cell fully functional.

‘Radical action’ needed to hit climate goals: Energy agency BERLIN., MAR 29 (AP): The world must take “radical action” to shift away from fossil fuels, including investing US$5.7 trillion annually in solar, wind and other forms of clean power this decade to ensure that global warming does not pass dangerous thresholds, the head of the International Renewable Energy Agency said on Tuesday. Other measures proposed in a 348-page report on the global energy transition include improving energy efficiency, increasing

electrification, capturing carbon emissions and expanding the use of hydrogen gas. Scientists say global emissions need to drop 45 per cent by the end of the decade compared to 1990 levels, but recent data suggest they are going up, not down, in part due to rising energy demand and the expansion of fossil fuel use. “The energy transition is far from being on track and anything short of radical action in the coming years will diminish, even eliminate, chances to meet

our climate goals,” said Francesco La Camera, the director-general of IRENA. Countries agreed seven years ago in Paris to limit global warming to 2⁰C (3.6 Fahrenheit), ideally no more

than 1.5⁰C (2.7 F), to avoid potentially catastrophic consequences for the planet. With temperatures now more than 1.1⁰C above the pre-industrial average, a recent report by a UN science panel found that billions around the world are already vulnerable to the effects of climate change. La Camera told an energy conference in Berlin that “not only the 1.5 C, the 2C goal is really in danger if we don’t act and don’t make a dramatic change in the way we produce and

consume energy”. IRENA, which is based in the oilrich Gulf emirate of Abu Dhabi-based IRENA, said investments of US$700 billion should be diverted away from the fossil fuel sector each year to avoid creating wells, pipelines and power plants that can’t be used anymore. T h i s d e m a n d wa s echoed by UN SecretaryGeneral Antonio Guterres, who called for an end to private sector financing for coal power, which surged to record highs last year.
