The exit polls signal that the BJP remains the dominant party in these states and indicate a big swing in AAP’s fortunes as Kejriwal’s party is also seen to have emerged as a force in Uttarakhand and Goa where it may corner a decent poll percentage, if not many seats. The counting of votes will take place on March 10.

LVIV, MAR 7 (AP): Russia announced yet another limited cease-fire and the establishment of safe corridors to allow civilians to flee some besieged Ukrainian cities Monday. But the evacuation routes led mostly to Russia and its ally Belarus, drawing withering criticism from Ukraine and others. Ukrainian officials accused Moscow of resorting to “medieval siege” tactics in places, and in one of the most desperate of the encircled cities, the southern port of Mariupol, there were no immediate signs of an evacuation. Ru s s i a n P r e s i d e n t Vladimir Putin’s forces continued to pummel some cities with rockets even after the announcement of corridors, and fierce fighting raged in places, indicating there would be no wider cessation of hostilities. fense Ministry announced a new push Monday, saying civilians would be allowed to leave the capital of Kyiv, Mariupol and the cities of Kharkiv and Sumy. The two sides met for a third round of talks Monday, according to Russian state media, though hopes for any breakthrough were dim. The countries’ foreign ministers are also scheduled to meet in Turkey on Thursday, according to that country’s top diplomat. Ukrainians, whose ferocious resistance

has slowed the invasion and thwarted any hopes Moscow had for a lightning victory, have been reinforcing cities across the country. In Kyiv, soldiers and volunteers have built hundreds of checkpoints, often using sandbags, stacked tires and spiked cables. In Mariupol, where an estimated 200,000 people hoping to flee were becoming increasingly desperate, Red Cross officials waited to hear when a safe corridor would be established.

pandemic. But, despite the unemployment rate, said India’s economy was expected to continue to grow. Keitzar acknowledged that many had lost jobs during the pandemic, which further increased the dependence on government jobs in Nagaland. She said this was understandable as the job losses were witnessed in the private sector. But, she urged everyone not to have a negative

perception regarding jobs in the private sector and that the overall job market was picking up again. She requested the youth to use the opportunity of job placement drive of HCL Technologies. She remarked that though the Naga society was more oriented towards government jobs, the reality was that the government jobs were becoming scarce and competition had increased manifold. the role of teachers in educating the children, SKK, however, said that appointing proxy teacher was not only unethical but also violates the fundamental rights and hamper the future of the children. Pointing out that there were no proper infrastructures like toilet, electrification, benches/desk, white/ black boards, playground, potable water, including student friendly kits and uniforms etc., SKK has asked the School Education department to direct its officials to ensure prop-

er allocation of designed programmes, schemes and other necessary requirements for the welfare of the students. SKK also cautioned government aided school teachers to refrain from being involved in other institutions and offices except teaching. It also urged all units under SKK to “avert any irregular development encircling from achieving the standard order in school education.” SKK also said that punitive action would be taken against those parties in conflict.

GENEVA, MAR 7 (IANS): The introduction of SARSCoV-2, the virus causing Covid-19 infection, to wildlife could result in the establishment of animal reservoirs, which may, in turn, result in the emergence of a new virus variant, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Monday. The WHO made the statement jointly with the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), and World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

It called for prioritising monitoring of SARS-CoV-2 infection in wildlife and preventing the formation of animal reservoirs. Although the Covid pandemic is driven by human-to-human transmission, the SARSCoV-2 virus is also known to infect animal species. Current knowledge also indicates that wildlife does not play a significant role in the spread of SARSCoV-2 in humans, but spread in animal populations can affect the (Cont’d on p-8)

CBCC urges state govt to fully implement NLTP Act DIMAPUR, MAR 7 (NPN): Reacting to the proposed move of the state government to review the Nagaland Total Liquor Prohibition (NLTP) Act, 1989, the Chakhesang Baptist Church Council (CBCC) has urged the government to fully implement the NLTP Act, 1989 in the greater interest of the people and the state. In a press note, CBCC executive secretary Rev. Khrotso Mero pointed out that the NLTP Act came into being after nearly three decades of persistent appeal of

the Naga public spearheaded by the Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC), Naga Mothers’ Association and other civil society groups “to eradicate the menace of drinking in our land.” CBCC said that although the Act was realised and inspired by the teachings of the Bible, it was literally enacted in conformity with the Directive Principles of State Policy (DPSP) as enshrined in the constitution of India (Article 47). CBCC also stated that when India gained indepen-

dence in 1947, prohibition was included in directive principles of the Constitution of India and accordingly the government of several states adopted and introduced these liquor prohibition laws. It said those states included Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Manipur, Mizoram, Lakshadweep and Nagaland. Although some of those states have relaxed on prohibition Acts, CBCC said the two prominent states that were still enforc-

ing those prohibition laws were Gujarat and Bihar. CBCC claimed that Gujarat Prohibition Act 1949 was being enforced till today with significant success. In the case of Bihar, CBCC said ever since the Bihar Prohibition Act 2016 was introduced, the socioeconomic effects of the state revealed that “within a year of prohibition, the number of murders and gang robberies decreased by 20%. The number of riots fell by 13% and traffic accident were reduced by 10%. For the econ-

omy, spending per household rose: increase in sales of milk by 10%, cheese by 20%, twowheeled vehicles by 30% and electrical appliance by 50%, CBCC said. “Considering the significant success of implementing the Prohibition Acts in Gujarat & Bihar and comparing with the contentious issues of the NLTP Act, 1989, what concerns us most is the political will of the government to implement the Act in letter and spirit,” CBCC stated.

(NP) Staff Reporter DIMAPUR, MAR 7 (NPN): Moatoshi Longkumer, MLA inaugurated the Signal Angami villageKevijau colony link road, here, on Monday. Addressing the gathering after the inaugural programme, Moatoshi stated that one should not depend on government alone for all-round development of a colony or Dimapur as

He pointed out that the inauguration and completion of the link road was perfect example of a joint

venture between council members and responsible MLA. 30 of 36 disputed villages to remain in M’laya

Correspondent

SHILLONG, MAR 7: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Monday revealed that 30 of 36 disputed villages in six out of the 12 areas of difference between Meghalaya and Assam will remain with the State based on the recommendations made by the regional committees of both the States. Making a statement on the vexed inter-state boundary dispute in the Assembly, Sangma informed that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on January 29, 2022 between Assam and Meghalaya to record the agreed position arrived at between the two States and to conclude the process of joint consultations. “The purpose of this MoU is to come to a conclusion to the interstate boundary between the states of Assam and Meghalaya in respect of the 6 areas of difference out of the total 12 (twelve) areas of difference as furnished by Meghalaya for delineation and demarcation with the fixation of boundary pillars on ground,” the Chief Minister

Conrad Sangma said. The copy of the MoU was submitted to the Union Home Minister on January 31, 2022, for examination and consideration of the Ministry of Home Affairs. He said the solution to the boundary dispute between Assam and Meghalaya was intimated to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 31, 2022 for his intervention to ensure that the matter be given due consideration and priority by the Government of India to resolve the areas of differences. Sangma informed that a meeting has been scheduled in New Delhi between him and his Assam counterpart Himanta Biswa Sarma with Home Minister Amit Shah on March 9 for a final resolution to the boundary

issue vis-à-vis the six areas, on which consensus has been arrived at. “Both the State Governments have agreed that no new area of difference shall be added in future beyond the already identified 12 areas of differences. Of the total of 36 villages claimed by Meghalaya in 2011, a total of 30, some fully and a few partially, is being recommended to be within Meghalaya,” he informed. “A rough area of 36.79 sq. km in these six areas are under differences and after the detailed discussion, surveys and visits being made by the Regional Committees, approximately 18 sq.km plus/minus will come to Meghalaya and 18 sq.km plus/minus will go to Assam,” the Chief Minister said. “Ownership of the land will not be affected irrespective of the administrative control by whichever state gets the particular area,” Sangma assured. Under the agreement, Sangma said, Meghalaya would get eight out of the eight disputed villages in Tarabari, two villages, out

of the three in Gijang and eleven, out of the 12 disputed villages in Hahim – all in West Khasi Hills district. In Ri-Bhoi district, Meghalaya and Assam would take administrative control of one village each in Boklapara and take control over five villages in Khanapara-Pilangkata, while one would be under Assam. In East Jaintia Hill district’s Ratacheera area, three villages would be under the administrative control of Meghalaya and one with Assam. In all, out of the 36 villages in these six disputed areas, 30 would be part of Meghalaya and the rest with Assam control of one village each in Boklapara and take control over five villages in Khanapara-Pilangkata, while one would be under Assam. “Once a final resolution is reached and the boundary demarcated in these areas, the two governments would again take up the remaining six areas for a similar resolution,” the Chief Minister said. Lauding the efforts of past leaders for trying

to resolve the dispute, the Sangma said, the three regional committees also put in tremendous hard work and made 22 visits in these areas to gauge the people’s mind in these areas and also looked at different criteria before compiling their reports. “I am very happy to be able to present this particular statement to the House specially on the Golden Jubilee year of our State. This has been an area which has been under dispute and areas of differences for a very long time and at this point in time while I make the statement, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the leaders in the past who have contributed to bringing this discussion to this level that we are today,” the Chief Minister said thanking his predecessors, former Ministers many former Chief Secretaries and officials who have contributed largely to the discussions and to the details of all the studies that have been done and it is most appropriate for us to recognize the efforts that have been made by them because it was a process.

203 polling stations with the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) personnel maintaining a strict vigil in Majuli, the world’s largest river island. Brisk voting continued through the day with the officials ensuring that strict COVID protocols were maintained. The by-election to the constituency was necessitated after former Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal resigned from the assembly. Sonowal was elected to the Rajya Sabha on September 27 last year and is now serving as Union minister

for ports and shipping. The former chief minister was elected to the state legislative assembly from Majuli constituency for two consecutive terms in 2016 and 2021. Wearing of masks and social distancing at polling stations were made mandatory. Thermal scanning facility was available at each booth. The ruling BJP’s candidate Bhuban Gam, the opposition’s joint nominee Chittaranjan Basumatary of the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) and Bhaity Richong of the SUCI(C) were the three contestants.

GUWAHATI, MAR 7 (PTI): A local court here has directed the police to register a case against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on the basis of a complaint by Lok Sabha MP Abdul Khaleque, who alleged that the CM made inflammatory remarks over an eviction drive. The Congress MP had approached the court after the Dispur police station did not register an FIR against Sarma, his advocate Shamim Ahmed Barbhuyan said on Monday. The court of Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate, Biswadeep Baruah, on Saturday directed the Dispur police station to file the case on the basis of Khaleque’s complaint that Sarma had stated that the eviction exercise at Gorukhuti in Darang district was a “revenge” for the incidents of 1983 - when some youths there were killed during the Assam Agitation. Barbhuyan told PTI that Khaleque had filed the complaint on December 29 at Dispur police station, but it did not register any FIR. In the order, which was made available on Monday, the court said, “The O.C. Dispur P.S. is directed to register a case on the al-

legations mentioned in the complaint and investigate the matter fairly and to submit the Final Form at the earliest. “The veracity of the allegations is not something which can be enquired into prior to registration of the FIR. By failing to even register the FIR, it appears that the police has failed in the discharge of its duty.” The MP, in his complaint, accused the chief minister of making “communal statements against the Muslim community” while justifying the eviction drive at Gorukhuti in September. “Betraying his oath on the Constitution, the Hon’ble Chief Minister Dr Sarma has maliciously given a communal colour to what was supposed to be an executive exercise,” the complaint said. The “rampant human rights violations” at Gorukhuti were preceded by multiple utterances of Sarma, who targeted the par ticular community, Khaleque alleged. “The hate created by the Hon’ble Chief Minister’s constant denigration of the Muslim community manifested itself in the egregious acts of a civilian,” he added.

Mnp extended

Correspondent IMPHAL, MAR 7: The Centre and Manipur government on Monday extended the tripartite ceasefire truce with the two umbrella groups of Kuki militants — United People’s Front (UPF) and Kuki National Organisation (KNO) — for another year. The ground rules laid down in the agreement will remain unchanged, as per the agreement. The KNO) and the UPF, had entered into separate tripartite agreements for SoO with the Centre and the state government on August 22, 2008. Meghalaya doctors, nurses, hesitant Veteran CPI (Maoist) leader of Covid-19 vaccine being counseled ‘Kanchan Da’ nabbed in Assam Correspondent

SHILLONG, MAR 7: Doctors, nurses and other health care workers in Meghalaya, who are still hesitant to take vaccine against Covid-19 are being counseled, Health and Family Welfare Minister, James K Sangma informed the assembly on Monday. Replying to a query during Question Hour, Sangma informed that number of unvaccinated health care workers in government hospitals was 2456 and that in private hospitals was 49. “Ninety-three doctors and 462 nurses in the government sector and 48 doctors and 144 nurses in the private sector across the state refused to take vaccine against Covid-19 due to various reasons and myths,” he said. “The total number is 2505, which is about 10 per cent hesitancy rate,” Sangma said in the course of his replies to opposition Trinamool Congress legislator Himalaya Shangpliang who wanted to know the rate of vaccine hesitancy among health care workers in the

state. The Minister said the government is making all out efforts to get these health care workers vaccinated through counseling and awareness programmes. Listing the primary reasons for vaccine hesitancy among doctors, nurses and health care workers, based on a study by the Indian Institute of Public Health, Sangma said there were ‘myths’ doing the rounds in the social media that inoculation could lead to infertility and impotency, adding that there was also confusion among some as to which brand of the Covid-19 vaccine to opt for as there were several available. He said that counseling was being carried out, specifically to dispel these myths regarding vaccination, adding that as on date, less than 1 per cent of physicians in the state were yet to take the jab. When lone Nationalist Congress Party legislator Saleng Sangma of the treasury bench asked if these doctors and nurses who were hesitant to take vaccine

were not in “normal state of mind”, wondering if it was prudent for them to treat patients and suggested that they should be sent on “holidays” till their counseling was complete, the Health Minister asserted that it did not necessarily mean that they had mental issues and that it was not required to send them on leave. However, the Health Minister said that 70 to 80 per cent of the doctors, nurses and other health care workers who were earlier hesitant, have come forward for vaccination after successful counseling and expressed hope that 100 per cent vaccination of all personnel in the health sector would be achieved soon, adding that so far, 70.24 per cent of eligible persons in the state have received the first dose and 57 per cent have taken the second shot. Meanwhile, the daily Covid-19 case count has been on a steady decline with four cases of new infection and seven that of recovery recorded today in the state, which has 140 active cases.

GUWAHATI, MAR 7 (PTI): Veteran CPI (Maoist) leader and a member of its central committee, Arun Kumar Bhattacharjee, known by his nom de guerre ‘Kanchan Da’, was arrested in Cachar district of Assam, a top police officer said on Monday. He was nabbed from a tea garden under Udharbond police station on Sunday evening along with one of his associates Akash Orang alias Rahul, Guwahati Police Commissioner Harmeet Singh told a press conference here. “He is a big catch for Guwahati Police. We got information about his movements in December and he slipped through two-three operations earlier. But last evening, we were able to arrest him when he tried to hide in a tea garden,” Singh said. The 72-year-old ‘Kanchan Da’ was tasked to set up a state-level committee of the CPI (Maoist) in Assam and create a “red corridor” from a neighbouring country to other Maoist-hit states of India

like Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh among others, he said. “His job was also to organise state party congress, recruit local cadres and purchase weapons here. We seized one laptop, a mobile phone, a huge amount of incriminating documents and Rs 3.6 lakh cash from his possession,” the police commissioner said. He said efforts to set up a network of Maoist cadres in Assam were at a “nascent stage” and those had been “nipped in the bud”. Singh also said the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has been informed about the arrest and their officers are on the way to Guwahati to take over the case as it involves multi-state terror activities, threatening national security. “We have come to know that around 200 cases are registered against the ideologue in different states, which have cumulatively announced a reward of over Rs 3 crore. Arresting him is a big success from the perspective of national security,” he added.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR TUESDAY, MARCH 8, 2022

Indian students stranded in PM Modi speaks to Putin and Zelenskyy Ukraine’s Sumy see ‘no ray of hope’ Seeks safe and quick evacuation of Indians in Sumy

NEW DELHI, MAR 7 (PTI): As the RussiaUkraine war entered its 12th day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday spoke to Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and sought their support in the safe and quick evacuation of the Indian students stuck in Ukraine’s embattled Sumy city. Noting that India has always stood for peaceful resolution of issues, Modi during his separate conversations with Putin and Zelenskyy suggested direct conversation between them, saying it may “greatly assist” the peace efforts. In the last few days, India has been particularly focusing on the evacuation of around 700 Indian students from Sumy, and also strongly pressed both the Russian and Ukrainian governments through multiple channels for an immediate ceasefire in the region for their safe exit from there. During his 50-minute phone conversation with Putin, Modi stressed the importance of safe evacuation of Indian citizens from Sumy “at the earliest” and the Russian President

Vladimir Putin, Narendra Modi and Volodymyr Zelenskyy

assured him of all possible cooperation to safely get them out of the city, official sources said. A Russian readout of the Modi-Putin talks said the Russian President informed the Indian leader about the decision of his armed forces to “establish a ceasefire and open humanitarian corridors today amid the worsening of the humanitarian situation”. It said the Russian military is making every effort to ensure the evacuation of the Indian citizens from Sumy and that Modi expressed gratitude to the Russian side for the measures taken for their exit from the conflict zone. “Prime Minister Modi conveyed his deep concern for the safety and security of the Indian students remaining in Sumy. President Putin briefed the Prime Minister about the ongoing measures related to humanitarian corridors for facilitating the

evacuation of civilians including Indian students,” the PMO said. Welcoming the ongoing negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, the Prime Minister expressed hope that they would lead to the cessation of the conflict. “He (Modi) suggested that a direct conversation between President Putin and President Zelenskyy may greatly assist the ongoing peace efforts,” the PMO said. Modi first spoke to Zelenskyy for around 35-minutes during which he sought the Ukrainian president’s “support” in the evacuation of the Indians stuck there, official sources said. The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said Modi, during his talks with Zelenskyy, expressed “deep concern for safety and security of Indian students remaining in Ukraine and emphasised the need for their quick and safe evacuation.” Modi also thanked Zel-

ensky for the help extended by the Ukrainian authorities for the evacuation of Indian nationals. The Ukrainian President briefed Modi in detail about the “conflict situation” and the ongoing negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, the PMO said. “The Prime Minister reiterated his call for an immediate cessation of violence and noted that India has always stood for peaceful resolution of issues and direct dialogue between the two parties,” it said. “The Prime Minister thanked Ukrainian authorities for their facilitation in evacuating more than 20,000 Indian citizens from Ukraine,” the PMO said. In a tweet, Zelenskyy said he informed Modi about how Ukraine is “countering Russian aggression”. “Informed Indian Prime Minister @narendramodi about Ukraine countering Russian aggression. India appreciates the assistance to its citizens during the war and Ukraine’s commitment to direct peaceful dialogue at the highest level,” the Ukrainian president said. “Grateful for the support to the Ukrainian people,” he added. Modi’s talks with Putin and Zelenskyy came on a day Russian authorities said they would start a ceasefire

and open “humanitarian corridors” in key Ukrainian cities including Kyiv, Kharkiv and Sumy. On Modi-Putin talks, the PMO statement said the two leaders discussed the evolving situation in Ukraine and Putin briefed Modi on the status of negotiations between the Ukrainian and Russian teams. The Russian readout said Putin pointed out that the “Indian students held by the radicals in Kharkov (Kharkiv) managed to leave the city only after strong international pressure on the Kyiv authorities.” Last week, the Russian President had claimed that a large number of Indian citizens were held hostage in Kharkiv, but India had rejected the claim. “Modi indicated his readiness to provide any possible assistance in order to resolve the conflict as soon as possible,” the Russian government readout said. In the last few days, India has been focusing on the evacuation of its students from Sumy, which has been under heavy shelling. On Saturday morning, the Indian students posted a video saying they have decided to leave for the Russian border from Sumy and that the Indian government and the embassy in Ukraine will be responsible if anything happens to them.

NEW DELHI, MAR 7 (PTI): “It has been 10 days (since) we have been waiting here but there is no ray of hope (as to) when we will be evacuated,” says a distraught Indian medical student stranded in the embattled northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy in a video message. There is no power, no water supply and shops are refusing to accept cards, even though ATMs have run out of cash, said the Sumy State University student. “We are not able to buy even food and essential items,” she said. Around 700 Indian students are stranded in Sumy, which has been witnessing intense fighting between Russian and Ukrainian troops for days now. India has been making efforts to evacuate its citizens from the city but with little success due to heaving shelling and air strikes. Another Indian student stranded in Sumy, Aashiq Hussain Sarkar, told PTI, “Our willpower is going down. We are feeling demoralised... We are still waiting for an update.” Ajith Gangadharan, a fourth-year medical student, said, “We were almost ready to leave on foot. The government asked us to stay put and not take any risk so

we stayed back. But for how long?” Exasperated, the Indian students in Sumy had on Saturday posted a video clip announcing that they had

decided to risk the walk to the Russian border in biting cold amid the fighting, raising fears about their safety in the corridors of power in New Delhi.

Indian student who was shot in Kyiv arrives in Delhi on IAF flight

An IAF flight carrying Indian student Harjot Singh, who was shot in Ukrainian capital Kyiv a few days ago, landed at the Hindon airbase here on Monday evening, officials said. Minister of State for Civil Aviation V K Singh and around 200 Indians, mainly students, also returned to India on the flight that landed at 6.15 pm, they said.V K Singh was in Poland to facilitate the evacuation of students.

The Ukrainian airspace has been shut since February 24 due to the Russian military offensive. Indian citizens stuck in Ukraine are being airlifted once they cross to neighbouring countries such as Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and Poland. On February 27, 31-year-old Harjot Singh, along with his two friends, boarded a cab for the western Ukrainian city of Lviv in a bid to escape Kyiv. He was shot four times, including in his chest.

CHENNAI, MAR 7 (PTI): Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Monday requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to find a way out to enable Indian medical students who studied in Ukraine to continue their studies within the country. Since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, over 1,200 medical students have so far returned to Tamil Nadu and the remaining are also expected to return in the coming days, Stalin said in a letter to Modi. The current situation has already resulted in the disruption of their studies and also threatens their future careers, he said. Acknowledging the efforts taken by the Centre in bringing home thousands of students caught in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, he pointed to the ‘emerging vital need’ to address the uncertain future being faced by them.

Given the current unprecedented situation in Ukraine, it may not be practically possible for these medical students to return to their colleges to continue their studies. The uncertainty is likely to prevail even after the cessation of hostilities and till the restoration of normalcy in their universities. Stalin requested Modi’s urgent intervention in taking up this issue with the National Medical Commission and the relevant Ministries. “They may be directed to immediately find a way out to enable the affected students to continue their studies in medical colleges in India from the stage from which their studies in Ukraine have been disrupted.” “I assure you that the Tamil Nadu Government will offer unstinted support to all the efforts taken by the Government of India in this regard.”

Beyond sanctions

s the death toll mounts, thousands displaced and cities after cities in Ukraine razed to the ground by Russian rockets and missiles; the world watches with impotent rage. The US and Western nations have imposed economic sanctions but contrary to popular media narratives, Russia has friends and is quietly redirecting financial flows and business to allies in a determined effort to evade Western sanctions. Over the past week, Western countries have ramped up sanctions against Russia in response to its invasion of Ukraine. The measures are the toughest since those imposed on Iran in 2010 and North Korea in 2013. Russia is the largest economy and the largest country globally, by population, against which such strong sanctions have ever been implemented. The West frankly admit these sanctions will not immediately stop the war, but hope that they would inflict enough damage on the Russian economy to help deescalate the conflict. The devaluation of the Russian rouble will certainly affect consumer inflation, which may grow by an additional 4-5 percent for a 40-50 percent increase in the value of the dollar. By end of last month, consumer price inflation in Russia exceeded 9 percent, with food inflation exceeding 12.5 percent. In the next 12 months, Russian banks and companies will have to repay more than $100bn. This is a hefty schedule, and many Russian borrowers counted on refinancing old debts. Now, this opportunity will be closed for many of them. Russia still has another big window in China, the world’s fastest growing economy. Over the months, the sanctions will also be felt in the realm of advanced technology etc . Russia has traditionally been an importer of advanced technology, used in all kinds of technologically complex products, from vacuum cleaners to nuclear-powered icebreaker ships. Many military products will be impossible to produce in Russia if sanctions remain in place. Placed in such a desperate situation, Russia will hope to look at China to redirect banking requirements and stay on although it may not be able to obtain the hi-tech products it needs. The sanctions could damage the Russian economy but not obliterate it, given some major loopholes purposefully left by the sanction architects. For the moment, whatever happens to the Russian economy is only to be expected by a country that has thrown all consideration for human rights and conduct of war as per international laws. Russia has become a rogue super power under Vladimir Putin who sees himself as another Peter the Great or Stalin. The West have to do more than vainly hoping that their economic sanctions will be the magic bullet. The world is compelled to watch as Russian bombs indiscriminately targets everybody in Ukraine. This is Putin’s great military strategy- bomb and decimate Ukraine and then roll his tanks to claim victory. There is much that the US and its NATO allies can and should do and that is- step in and send clear message to Putin that he cannot get away with murder just because the world is afraid of a nuclear war.

Triskaidekaphobia or historical district

pparently, there are mixed phobia reactions within numerologists section, upon the creation of number 13th district in Nagaland, which is known as Triskaidekaphobia or fear of number 13, sometime it is called as unlucky number too. That’s where Tseminyu is declared as the 13th District of Nagaland recently, by default and by demand, since some years back through consensus and so the Rengmas deserved it, as many Nagas would say, meantime, Mr. 13 was already captured and arrested prior to official announcement done, in the world of intelligentsia and think tank level for future references. Thus, keep calm, because “what is meant for you, will always be yours”. On the positive note of Triskaidekaphobia. The number 13 is actually a very good lucky number, in fact, in India, the 13th day is the lunar fortnight, is known to be highly auspicious and is called Triyodashi, it belongs to lord Shiva and is said to bestow long life, peace and good fortune and even the beautiful teenage years starts at 13 (thirteen), the Chinese, “the number 13 means ‘assured growth’ or definitely vibrant in Chinese. That’s why it’s actually considered very lucky” in France, 13 was traditionally considered a lucky number in France prior to the First World War, and was used in numerical form as a good luck symbol on postcard and charms, whereas, the number 13 is considered lucky in Italy. Associated with the great Goddess, fertility and the lunar cycles, the number is thought to bring prosperity and life. Therefore, the 13th district of Nagaland is seen very lucky as long as Tseminyu is “Historical District” rather ‘A land of historic’ as graciously sobriquet on 24th February 2022. As one of the least but keen observer amongst hundreds, and as historical district stands, it is so impressed and inevitable to sketch down a brief deep down lane memories of socalled a “Historical District” of Nagaland with my limited perspective, the Rengmas,

like any other homogenous counterpart stock of mongoloid race, has its migratory route with the nearest tribes such as, the Angami, the Semas, the Lothas etc, touching Burma country, as far as Maikhel and Khezakenoma is commonly concerned, and while walking in the shoes of scholars and historians as well. Moreover, the Rengmas identities are perfectly substantiated with legends and stories-telling, through an oral practice as one distinct tribe with its rich cultures and traditions, until the European anthropologists and officers, started capturing into monograph forms in the early part of 19th century. Where ‘the Rengma Nagas’ is one of their potential books and a gift to Nagas. And so long as, the undivided body of Naga Hills formation in 1866 is non-negotiable, Lieutenant, John Gregory being the first Deputy Commissioner, headquarters at Samuguting, when the Naga Hills, initially comprised of Angami, Rengma, Sema, Lotha and Zeliang communities. Having a contagious land stretch, and of course, the administrative headquarter got shifted to the present Kohima in 1878. The Rengmas are integral part of it, who remained equally committed and steadfast as son of the soil, if not more, in all weathers towards Naga cause. To start herewith, in 1874, when Dr. Brown, the political officer to Manipur, Captain John Butler, the Deputy Commissioner to Naga Hills, headquarters at Soomugooting, along with Lieutenant, Woodthorp, who was in charge of surveying, on their way to Doyand to the Laniere (Lanye) exploration. On 4th January, Tesiphema now Tesophenyu, had to fight heavily against the entry of Dr. Brown and his troops, with a staunch statement of “That the Tesiphemas would not either let us into or pass their village. That as neither man nor tiger had ever been allowed to pass, neither should we” (white man). Sources from the Nagas in the Nineteenth Century by Verrier Elwin. Because the

Rengmas were asked to resist and confront by surrounding Nagas, and many precious souls lost, but nationalism spirit never disappears. Of all tribes of Naga Hills, Rengmas appears to be the first revenue payers to British in 1847-48 in plain tracts of Assam, when the Nagas of hilly countries remained unvisited and un administered by British, due to aggressive nature and independent attitude in republic democratic system. As James Philips Mills, one of the British administrative gentlemen would say “Man who will face elephant and tigers as Rengmas do, and who in the past have raided boldly to get heads, are no cowards. Their staunchness too, was proved in France, where men who volunteered to face utterly unknown served well in the Labor Corps” itself speaks of Land of history. Perhaps, the history says, the Rengmas were never a small community, before the separations took place, till a group of southern speaking, split out to the west direction to Assam, while another homogenous bulk of northern Rengma speaking, further moved out to eastern direction of the present Meluri division. Side by side, they were many instances of inter migration among the neighbors too. Thus, Tseminyu district is suiting to be coined as historical place for many tribes and communities as its epicenter. Here, while re-visiting the journey of Naga Hills district formation, since 1866, as a whole. And for the Rengmas, it’s all about 155 years of happy living together, in health and sick with all his senior brothers. Finally, the youngest 13th district has branched out, from Nagas Hills District in spirit. And that speaks of Rengmas principle, integrity and loyalty, so if one is deeply sentimental and emotional enough, then the separations also brings both mixture feelings of joy and nostalgic with a sense of gratefulness. Right from Samugooting (1866) to Kohima (1878) to finally Tseminyu in 2021. And

leaving behind the Kohima district alone as far as the Naga Hills formation is fondly remembered. Whatever, In Rengma Naga tradition and custom, when a child is born to a family, the baby’s naming ceremony is conventionally called on the third day, by extending of an invitation to relatives and neighbors in the village, to bless new born infant with long life, characters, manifold offspring and so on. Here, a child’s father plays an important role to propose a name to be named after in consultations. And gone by were the days, names were generally imprint to new born, mostly in patronymic channel, that was to uphold and safeguard their memories still ahead. Likewise, it was quite pertinent and so fitting occasion, for the honourable Chief minister, Nagaland, in pronouncing and naming Tseminyu district as “Historical District” on red letter day for the Rengmas in special. In special reference to Rengma tribe immense contributions towards Naga cause, in very articulate manner and blow by blow. With meticulous mentioned of 200 Rengma Labour Corps to France in 1917-18, in service of Allied forces, then formation and active participation in Naga Club, a signatory to popular memorandum submission to Sir Simon Commission in 1929, a signatory to Akbar Hydari Accord or 9-point agreement in 1947, again a signatory to 16-point agreement in declaration of state in 1963, with two interim members to assist statehood formation. And recalling AZ Phizo’s wife as Rengma lady. Furthermore, the first Naga national flag was woven by Rengma ladies of Sendenyu village and unfurled in Rengma country. Although, you are small tribe, but contributions are big, in all Naga important events and history as quoted. Therefore, I believe the recognition and admission itself, is a proud moment and huge significance of rich culture in Naga context and a gift to Rengma patriotic souls, to carry forward their legacy in this competitive world. DailyDevotion Aspiring candidates write to govt on NSSB exam centre The Source of Abundant Joy In all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. —Romans 8:37 Paul was speaking here of the things that might seem likely to separate a saint from the love of God. But the remarkable thing is that nothing can come between the love of God and a saint. The things Paul mentioned in this passage can and do disrupt the close fellowship of our soul with God and separate our natural life from Him. But none of them is able to come between the love of God and the soul of a saint on the spiritual level. The underlying foundation of the Christian faith is the undeserved, limitless miracle of the love of God that was exhibited on the Cross of Calvary; a love that is not earned and can never be. Paul said this is the reason that “in all these things we are more than conquerors.” We are super-victors with a joy that comes from experiencing the very things which look as if they are going to overwhelm us. Huge waves that would frighten an ordinary swimmer produce a tremendous thrill for the surfer who has ridden them. Let’s apply that to our own circumstances. The things we try to avoid and fight against— tribulation, suffering, and persecution— are the very things that produce abundant joy in us. “We are more than conquerors through Him” “in all these things”; not in spite of them, but in the midst of them. A saint doesn’t know the joy of the Lord in spite of tribulation, but because of it. Paul said, “I am exceedingly joyful in all our tribulation” (2 Corinthians 7:4). The undiminished radiance, which is the result of abundant joy, is not built on anything passing, but on the love of God that nothing can change. And the experiences of life, whether they are everyday events or terrifying ones, are powerless to “separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:39).

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR TUESDAY, MARCH 8, 2022

Dear Government of Nagaland You have finally fulfilled the wishes & dreams of thousands of students by forming the NSSB which should have been done decades back. Better late than Never. We hope meritorious candidates will get an opportunity to prove themselves and the government of Nagaland will gets the brightest and most talented deserving candidates to serve the people with sincerity, dedication and hard work. Why should Nagaland be always famous only for the wrong reasons? Being one of the first state in the North East to have got it statehood 59 years ago we should have been a trend setter and should have left other NE states far behind in all the sectors, be it Education, Roads & Bridges infrastructure, Electricity, water, Agriculture ,horticulture Health & medical, sports, stadiums etc. BUT, We all know where we stand today. We hope the present opositionless government delivers and not hold another useless record for being the only oppositionless state government in india. So much for party loyalty and integrity for the opposition. Give us good all weather roads connecting all districts of Nagaland, And we will find a way for our survival.. Give us good electricity (not exorbitant prepaid tariff rates), establish sports stadiums for various sports discipline in all districts , we will earn by ourselves and not depend on you for the jobs. We hang our heads in shame when our friends from Mizoram tells us that they have Astroturf football stadium in all district in Mizoram. Nagaland proudly and triumph fully inaugurated one couple of years back in kohima

which allegedly charges exorbitant rates for matches. Can a budding football talent even set a foot on it??? Let alone practice and play. Lack of discipline, dedication and focus cannot be the only reason for our dismal performance at the national level both in team as well as individual category be it football, boxing, badminton, TT, cricket, hockey, Archery etc. Amidst the present gloomy condition of Nagaland in all sphere , the only silver lining for the students is the forming of NSSB. Kohima thought capital need not necessarily have all the important offices located there. All districts should be equally developed. Appearing for NPSC in kohima every year is a herculean task for thousands of students in terms of finding a cheap rent/accommodations, affordable hotels, water scarcity, traffic jams, lack of cheap & fast mode of transportation, inter district communication problems etc many students are not fortunate enough to have relatives or friends in kohima or have enough cash to afford the kinds of hotels in kohima. Due to the above reasons, Many students usually travel from Dimapur to kohima on the day of the exam and fall back the same day which continues till the end of the exams which is not only stressful but is also expensive. There are many instances where the NPSC aspirants are late for their exams due to the traffic jams. The number of students who will be sitting for NSSB exams will definitely will be many times more than that of NPSC, hence we urge the government to keep these issues which the aspirants faces in mind while setting up the office, for the welfare of the students apart from just forming the NSSB.

For the common good of the aspiring candidates, We urge the government of Nagaland to have the office of the NSSB IN CHUMUKEDIMA DC OFFICE COMPLEX which will be centrally located for all. Such huge and magnificent building deserves to have prestigious office like NSSB. Chumukedima DC Office complex is the perfect place for having the office of NSSB for all aspiring candidates in terms of location, accommodation, transportation and communication and it is also closely located to kohima as well. All the inconveniences which the aspirant faces in terms of cheap transportation mode (auto, rickshaw, two wheeler taxi) accommodations (cheap affordable hotels, PG’s, house rents) water scarcity, traffic jams etc in kohima will be solved if the office is located in Chumukedima DC office complex. it will also be very convenient as Dimapur is well connected and has good good inter district transportation systems by sumo/buses/winger etc. Aspiring students arriving from other parts of india will also find it convenient as Dimapur is connected by Railway, Airway and roadway and they do not have to undertake further stressful journey ahead. Keeping all the above factors in mind we request the Government of Nagaland to kindly have the newly formed Nagaland service selection Board (NSSB) located at DC Office complex chumukedima for the welfare of all the aspiring candidates . Aspiring candidates Pukhato sumi Avise Mombemo yanthan Toshi Aier. Abe konyak Mary pochury

In fact, the 13th Tseminyu district was born, through concerted affords, irrespective of ranges, villages or political background, and not just arrived out of blue, but burnt mid-night lamps, sweat and blisters too. Hereby out of many events, it is a cherished moment to recollect the event of Walkathon Rally organized by Rengma Selo Zi, in autumn 2021, that had covered 58 kilometers with 73 young participants, signifying 58 years of Nagaland statehood declaration, and 73 years of Tseminyu Bench court establishment in 1948 respectively, which drew an attention far and wide cutting across, in democratic manner. Surely, they deserved an appreciation for landmarked historic in the anal of Rengma district demand. Undoubtedly, the genesis of district aspirations has its beginning, elsewhere 2016 onwards in unison, under leadership of Mr. Kenyuseng Tep, the then president of Rengma Hoho, by submission of memorandum to honorable Chief Minister, Government of Nagaland, through the Additional Deputy Commissioner, Tseminyu in the style of public rally organized on 27th July 2016, converged from all walks of life across Tseminyu district, Today, geographically, Tseminyu being one of the finest location at the heart of Rengma hills, surrounded by her good neighbors, in the north shared by Tesophenyu and Kithagha, Phenshunyu regions of west, Kasha range occupies south-east and Sema tribe of Pughoboto area in the east. Connected with full of historic relations and bound ship, since from the time immemorial. To mention herewith, the British inspection bungalow still remain as remnant, to the extent of British fe-

male descendants in village as learned. By virtue, Tseminyu as the headquarter of Rengmas and Nagas, it may be suitable to brief out certain historical background and its surrounding. Here, again closely deriving from the source of studies based on available records, it may be put on records that the first ever European officers visit to Rengma country speaks of Captain John Butler. “About 1870, who paid a friendly visit to the western Rengmas and was well received, yet no indications of place, year and date. Indeed, the establishment of Tseminyu village is always accompanied by a very fascinating and amazing story behind, and I quoted from the book of The Rengma Nagas by J.P Mills “Now the second largest of the western Rengma villages (Tseminyu). They were led by a deer which fled in front of them as they hunted it. When the time for the ceremony of founding the village came, the heads of clans all brought cocks, and it was decided that the village should be founded in the name of the man whose crowed first. A man called Tsemi of the Tsobinyu clan was so poor that he could only bring an egg. His egg, however, miraculously crowed before any of the cocks, and the village was called Tseminyu after him”. “From Tseminyu a party later went north and founded the lower section of Tesophenyu, the biggest of the western Rengma villages”. Nonetheless, it is incorrect to decline the nickname bestowed unto Tseminyu district as ‘historical district’ in consonance to its unspoken and hidden universe. Kept ‘A land of Yarrow unvisited’ for quite some time, yet ‘Yarrow visited’ by William Wordsworth himself, for which, where a politician or a philosopher or a poet, who thinks often are the most admirable and awesome before subjects. “For men may come and men may go, but I go on forever”. Russia-Ukraine war likely to cost India’s military capabilities dearly NEW DELHI, MAR 7 (IANS): The war between Russia and Ukraine is likely to cost India’s military capabilities dearly with delivery of many platforms like nuclear powered submarine, Grigorovich class frigates, Fighter jets, Triumf S-400, AK 203 assault rifle and others are expected to be delayed. The ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine and the sanctions imposed on Russia by Western and European Nations to delay the delivery of critical projects Indian armed forces were looking upon to enhance its capabilities. As soon as the war began on February 24, both India and Russia maintained there would be no delays with respect to deliveries of critical platforms but with sanction imposed and the possibility of the war continuing for long, it will have a major impact. India decided to upgrade its military infrastructure when the country was locked in a major faceoff with China along the Line of Actual Control in July 2020. The threat of twofront war -- from China and

Pakistan -- has made India to go for large scale arms deals. According to Swedish think-tank -- Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) report in 2021, Russia is still one of India’s largest arms suppliers. India’s defence ministry has recently reviewed the status of the current deals with Russia and how the war is going to impact the Indian military capabilities. In December 2021, India and Russia signed more than two dozen deals across a variety of sectors and had also inked a 10-year defence cooperation pact.

Back then, in a joint statement, India and Russia stated they intend to “upgrade the defence cooperation, including facilitating joint development and production of military equipment, components and spare parts, enhancing the after-sales service system, progress towards mutual recognition of quality control and regular joint exercises of the Armed Forces of the two countries”. One of the deals with Russia is the Triumf S-400 air defence system. India signed a $5 billion deal with Russia in October 2018 to buy five units of the S-400 surface to air missile system.

Russia has stated that it will deliver on time. However, the war will delay the same. S-400 air defence system is a mobile long range surface to air missile system which is considered one of the most lethal in the world. It can take down multiple targets up to a range of 400 km. Indian Army had also inked a deal with Russia to jointly develop the AK 203 assault rifle worth Rs 5,000 crore. The production of 6.71 lakh AK 203 rifles in Korwa, Amethi in Uttar Pradesh as part of a joint venture with Russia under the Make in India project will face further delays despite the deal having faced hurdles and delays earlier. In 2019, India signed a $3 billion deal with Russia for leasing a nuclear-powered submarine. The Chakra III, Akula class submarine is expected to be delivered by 2025 for a period of 10 years. This will be the third nuclear submarine India will take on lease from Russia, the other two being in 1988 for a period of three years and then in 2012 for 10 years. The lease for this will end this year.

Cong predicts majority in Goa PANAJI, MAR 7 (IANS): Even if the Congress wins a majority in Goa, it would like to bring other non-BJP parties onboard during government formation, former Chief Minister Digambar Kamat said on Monday. Addressing reporters after a meeting of the party’s 37 candidates and their election agents, he also expressed confidence that the party would win a clear majority with its alliance partner, Goa Forward. “(Congress senior observer for Goa and former Union Minister P.) Chidambaram has just told us, even if the party gets a majority, the Congress would like to associate all non-BJP parties (in government formation),” Kamat said. “We feel that our party will win a clear majority and will come to power in alliance with Goa Forward,” he said. Asked about the Congress’ chief ministerial face, Kamat, who is one of the aspirants for the top post, said: “Why are you worrying about this? Even I am not thinking about it.” The Congress, in alliance with the Goa Forward party (three seats) has contested 37 seats out of the total 40.

Court grants CBI 7-day custody of NSE ex-MD Chitra in co-location scam case

NEW DELHI, MAR 7 (PTI): A Delhi court Monday granted CBI 7-day custodial interrogation of former managing director and chief executive officer of National Stock Exchange (NSE) Chitra Ramkrishna in NSE colocation scam case. Special Judge Sanjeev Aggarwal passed the order after hearing arguments from CBI and the counsel appearing for accused. The probe agency had sought her 14-day custodial interrogation. The CBI arrested the accused on Sunday after her anticipatory bail application was dismissed by the court on Saturday. In its application before the court, the CBI alleged that the electronic devices recovered are being analyzed and would be used for conducting further examination of Ramakrishna. It alleged that she was evasive and has continuously misguided the Investigation Officer and gave wrong statements. The CBI alleged that her custodial interrogation was needed to unearth the criminal conspiracy and the role of other NSE officials and brokers in the company. “She is also required to be confronted with co-ac-

cused Anand Subramanian, who is already in police custody of CBI, to understand the magnitude and scope of the criminal conspiracy. She is also required to be confronted with digital evidence available on record,” the agency told the court. The CBI further submitted that the material already collected in the present case show that Ramkrishna in conspiracy with Subramanian had improperly hired him by coercing the HR department of NSE. “Thereafter, she in conspiracy with Subramanian influenced the officials of NSE to facilitate him in having access to important decision making processes of the NSE. During the same period M/s OPG Securities was gaining undue advantages in NSE by logging into

secondary server,” it said. The CBI said that during Ramkrishna’s tenure as Joint MD, NSE, the colocation was conceptualized and implemented. Ramkrishna was appointed as MD and CEO of NSE on April 1, 2013. “Investigation has revealed that during the period 2013-16 after accused Chitra Ramakrishna took over as MD & CEO of NSE, OPG Securities Pvt Ltd was allowed to connect to secondary server of the COLO-TBT Dissemination server for over 300 trading days causing it undue gain,” it said. It is further submitted that OPG Securities Pvt Ltd was warned repeatedly in 2012 that accessing the secondary server is a violation of the rules/guidelines of the NSE, it said. “NSE however stopped issuing such warnings to OPG Securities without any justifiable reasons during 2013 when Ramkrishna was MD & CEO of NSE. Investigation has also revealed that Muralidharan Natarajan, the CTO of NSETECH (a subsiiary of NSE), was responsible for putting in place the co-location architecture at NSE. He was reporting to Ramakrishna,” the agency told the court.

KOLKATA, MAR 7 (PTI): Two days after her chartered flight experienced mid-air turbulence, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday said another aircraft had come in front of her plane, and it was the prompt action of the pilot that averted a head-on collision. The Bengal government had on Saturday sought a report from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) after Banerjee’s aircraft encountered turbulence, leaving her back and chest injured. The state government also sought to know from the DGCA if approval was accorded for the route taken by Banerjee’s chartered flight. She was returning from Uttar Pradesh after winding up her campaign for the Samajwadi Party. “Another plane, all of a sudden, came in front of my aircraft. petite in the market while prompting safe-haven flows into the US dollar,” said Sugandha Sachdeva, Vice President - Commodity and Currency Research, Religare Broking Ltd. Besides, the parabolic rise in crude oil prices towards multi-year highs and spiralling commodity prices are fuelling inflationary risks, which is a key headwind for the rupee-dollar exchange rate, Sachdeva added. According to Sachdeva, the overall trend for the Indian rupee is skewed towards the downside and a convincing close below 77 “would pave the way for further downside towards 77.50 mark in near term, while we envisage the local currency to test the 79 mark from a medium-term perspective.” Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading 0.46 per cent higher at 99.09.

Sumi said they had been given some indications in this regard during the meeting on Monday, though no specific date was known to him. As reported, talks were expected to resume soon after the culmination on Manipur Assembly elections, which ended on March 6.

Based on an analysis of complaints of frauds, the RBI said “sharing of confidential information by the customers, knowingly or unknowingly, is one of the major causes leading to the financial frauds.” The RBI asked the public to never share confidential details like user name, password, card details, CVV and OTP with anyone, even their own family members and friends. It added that bank officials, financial institutions, RBI or other genuine entities do not ask customers to share confidential information. Imposters, the RBI said, often pressurise

and trick customers into sharing confidential details such as passwords, OTP, PIN, CVV etc by citing an urgency, such as the need to block an unauthorised transaction, payment required to stop some penalty, or an attractive discount. These credentials are then used to defraud the customers. The RBI also asked the customers not to click on unknown and unverified links and immediately delete such SMS or email sent by unknown senders to avoid accessing them by mistake in future. “Always go to the official website of your bank / service provider. Carefully verify the website details especially where it requires entering financial credentials. Check for the secure sign (https with a padlock symbol) on the website before entering secure credentials,” it said.

MUMBAI, MAR 7 (PTI): Sliding for the fourth straight session, the rupee tanked 76 paise to close at 76.93 on Monday, after touching its lifetime low of 77 against the US dollar, as crude oil prices climbed to multi-year highs amid the Russia-Ukraine crisis. Global oil prices soared past USD 120 per barrel amid the US and European nations mulling a ban on Russian energy imports. Sustained foreign fund outflows and a lacklustre trend in domestic equities also weighed on investor sentiment, forex traders said. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened at 76.85 against the American currency and slumped to an all-time low of 77, before closing at 76.93, down 76 paise from the previous close. “The Indian rupee has plummeted to a lifetime low against the US dollar as the deepening Russia-Ukraine conflict has sapped risk ap-

UK PM invites world leaders to build coalition against Putin

THE HAGUE, MAR 7 (AP): A representative for Kyiv urged the United Nations’ top court on Monday to order Russia to halt its devastating invasion of Ukraine, at a hearing snubbed by Russia amid its ongoing assault on its neighbour. Ukrainian representative Anton Korynevych told judges at the International Court of Justice: “Russia must be stopped and the court has a role to play in stopping it.” Ukraine has asked the court to order Russia to “immediately suspend the military operations” launched Feb. 24 “that have as their stated purpose and objective the prevention and punishment of a claimed genocide” in the separatist eastern regions of Luhansk and Donetsk. Korynevych dismissed that genocide claim by Moscow as a “horrible lie.” He said: “The fact that Russian seats are empty speaks loudly. They are not here

in this court of law. They are on a battlefield waging aggressive war against my country.” A decision is expected on the request within days. If the court were to order a halt to hostilities, “I think the chance of that happening is zero,” said Terry Gill, a professor of military law at the University of Amsterdam. He noted that if a nation does not abide by the court’s order, judges could seek action from the United Nations Security Council, where Russia holds a veto. Russia’s seats at the Great Hall of Justice in the court’s Peace Palace headquarters were empty for the hearing. The court’s president, American judge Joan E. Donoghue, said Russia’s ambassador to the Netherlands informed judges that “his government did not intend to participate in the oral proceedings.” The request for socalled provisional measures is linked to a case

Ukraine has filed based on the Genocide Convention. Both countries have ratified the 1948 treaty, which has a clause allowing nations to take disputes based on its provisions to the Haguebased court. “Ukraine emphatically denies that any such genocide has occurred, and that the Russian Federation has any lawful basis to take action in and against Ukraine for the purpose of preventing and punishing genocide,” the country said in its claim to the court. Ukraine’s nine-page legal filing launching the case argues that “Russia has turned the Genocide Convention on its head” by making a false claim. It adds that “Russia’s lie is all the more offensive, and ironic, because it appears that it is Russia planning acts of genocide in Ukraine.” Regardless of the outcome of the hearings, they give Ukraine another platform to air grievances about Moscow’s invasion.

news conference on the sidelines of the annual meeting of China’s ceremonial parliament. “The friendship between the two peoples is iron clad,” he added. Much attention has been paid to a meeting between Chinese leader Xi Jinping and President Vladimir Putin in Beijing on Feb. 4, after which a joint statement was issued affirming “strong mutual support for the protection of their core interests.”

Russia endorsed China’s view of self-governing Taiwan as an “inalienable part of China, and opposes any forms of independence of Taiwan,” while China backed Russia in opposing the further enlargement of NATO. Since then, Xi’s government has refused to criticize the Russian invasion but tried to distance itself from Putin’s war by calling for dialogue and the respect of national sovereignty. That prompted suggestions Putin failed to tell the Chinese leader his plans before their February statement. Along with denouncing trade and financial sanctions on Moscow, Beijing says Washington is to blame for the conflict for failing to take Russia’s security concerns into consideration.

During an hour-long phone conversation with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Saturday, Wang said China opposes any moves that “add fuel to the flames” in Ukraine. Chinese state-controlled media outlets were told to post only pro-Russian content and to censor anti-Russian or pro-Western views, according to a copy of instructions that appeared on the social media account of the newspaper Beijing News. The post was later deleted. On Friday, a translation by state TV of remarks by the head of the International Paralympic Committee during the opening ceremony of the Beijing Winter Paralympics skipped portions that expressed horror about the war in Ukraine and called for peace.

VILNIUS, MAR 7 (AP): US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Monday assured Lithuania of NATO protection and American support as he began a lightning visit to the three Baltic states that are increasingly on edge as Russia presses ahead with its invasion of Ukraine. The former Soviet republics of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia are all NATO members and Blinken is aiming to reassure them of their security in the event Russia chooses to expand its military operations. “We are bolstering our shared defense so that we and our allies are prepared,” Blinken said, stressing that the U.S. commitment to NATO’s mutual defense pact is “sacrosanct,” “We will defend every inch of NATO

territory if it comes under attack,” he said. “No one should doubt our readiness, no one should doubt our resolve.” Memories of Soviet rule are still fresh in the Baltics and since the invasion of Ukraine last month, NATO has moved quickly to boost its troop presence in its eastern flank allies while the U.S. has pledged additional support. Blinken’s opened his Baltic tour in Vilnius, where Lithuanian support for Ukraine’s resistance to the Russian invasion is palpable as signs of solidarity with Ukrainians are evident in many businesses and on public buildings and buses. “Unfortunately, the worsening security situation in the Baltic region is of great concern for all of us and around the world,”

US sends more troops to Europe

The United States is sending 500 more troops to Europe to boost NATO security, an official said Monday as the Pentagon determined Russia has committed nearly all its combat power stationed along the border into Ukraine. With President Vladimir Putin intensifying operations, a senior US defense official also warned that Russian strikes on civilians were mounting and that Moscow was seeking to recruit foreign fighters, notably Syrians, for the war. The United States has already deployed 12,000 additional soldiers to Europe this year, but President Joe Biden has stressed that US troops will not engage in a conflict with Russian forces in Ukraine. Over the weekend, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin ordered an extra “500 US military personnel to locations in Europe to augment existing forces,” the defense official told reporters. “These additional forces are going to be positioned to respond to the current security environment in light of Russia’s renewed aggression against Ukraine, and to reinforce deterrence and defensive capabilities of NATO.”

Seoul has joined the multinational move to implement sanctions against Russia, including export control and the removal of Moscow from the SWIFT network, in which trillions of dollars change hands for cross-border payments.

Last week, South Korea said it will end transactions with seven major Russian banks and their affiliates, including Russian top lender Sberbank. It has also decided to halt investment in Russian government bonds. Earlier in the day, South Korea unveiled additional sanctions. Seoul said it plans to suspend transactions with Russia’s central bank, sovereign wealth funds and another Russian lender.

in assistance to Ukraine, noting that the NATO allies “are doing a lot, but we cannot stop.” He also called for an immediate halt to imports of Russian energy. “We cannot pay for oil and gas with Ukrainian blood,” he said. Lithuania is also dealing with pressure from another large power — China — for its relationship with Taiwan, the island China regards as a renegade province. China has taken actions, including halting imports of certain products, against Lithuania for allowing Taiwan to open a de facto embassy in Vilnius. Blinken said the Ukraine situation was relevant to Lithuania’s Taiwan situation as all countries should have the right to pursue their own foreign policies.

China calls Russia its chief ‘strategic partner’ amid war

BEIJING, MAR 7 (AP): China’s Foreign Minister on Monday called Russia Beijing’s “most important strategic partner,” amid its continued refusal to condemn the invasion of Ukraine. Wang Yi said ties with Moscow constituted “one of the most crucial bilateral relationships in the world.” China has broken with the US, Europe and others that have imposed sanctions on Russia after its invasion of Ukraine. Beijing has said sanctions create new issues and threaten a political settlement of the conflict. “No matter how perilous the international landscape, we will maintain our strategic focus and promote the development of a comprehensive China-Russia partnership in the new era,” Wang told reporters at a

WASHINGTON, MAR 7 (AGENCIES): The leaders of the United States, France, Germany and Britain vowed Monday to further punish Russia over its invasion of Ukraine, the White House said after video teleconference talks. Joe Biden, Emmanuel Macron, Olaf Scholz and Boris Johnson “affirmed their determination to continue raising the costs on Russia for its unprovoked and unjustified invasion of Ukraine,” a US statement said. Western allies have maintained a unified front on sanctions against Russia over its assault on Ukraine, but cracks emerged Monday over the prospect of an embargo on Russian oil and gas imports -- a move unpalatable to Germany, which is dependent on Russian gas. Berlin’s statement after the meeting did not address sanctions, and focused on concerns over humanitarian aid to besieged areas, which the leaders also discussed. ISLAMABAD, MAR 7 (PTI): Rafiq Tarar, a veteran Pakistani politician and former Supreme Court judge who served as the country’s President from 1997 to 2001, passed away on Monday due to prolonged illness. He was 92. “My grandfather Mohammad Rafiq Tarar has passed away,” his grandson Ataullah Tarar, a Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader tweeted. Tarar had served as Pakistan President between 1997 and 2001 after being nominated by the then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. Prior to his foray into politics with the PML-N, Tarar had served as a Supreme Court judge from 1991 to 1994. He also served as the Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court from March 6, 1989 to October 31, 1991. After Sharif ’s ouster by General Pervez Musharraf in 1999, Tarar was allowed to continue as president until 2001.

It comes as the UK said it has allocated an additional USD 100 million directly to the Ukrainian government budget to mitigate financial pressures created by Russia’s unprovoked and illegal invasion. The UK has imposed what it brands as the “largest sanctions package in history” on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine. Most recently, this included a full asset freeze and travel ban imposed against Alisher Usmanov and Igor Shuvalov, two of Russia’s leading oligarchs with significant interests in the UK and close links to the Kremlin.

It added that 18 other soldiers were wounded by the “terrorist attack”, which was carried out with the use of various weapons. The state media report did not name the group or individual behind the attack, but similar ones have been carried out by remnants of the Islamic State (IS) terror group, which is still active in the desert region. Meanwhile, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights placed the death toll at 15. It added that thetoll is likely going to rise as most of the wounded are in critical condition. Curiosity rover images tiny ‘mineral flower’ on Mars

N

ASA’s curiosity rover recently snapped a close-up image of a tiny, flower-like mineral deposit on the surface of Mars. The one-centimetre wide, beautiful branching rock that looks a bit like a coral or a sponge, was likely formed when water still covered the Red Planet, Live Science reported. Curiosity took the image of the mineral flower, that bears resemblance to a living organism, but is not alive, on February 25 near Aeolis Mons, also known as Mount Sharp - situated at the heart of the 154 ki-

lometres Gale crater on the Red Planet. According to NASA, the mineral flower was imaged using an onboard focusing process, the Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) aboard NASA’s Mars

rover Curiosity. It was created by merging two to eight images previously taken by the MAHLI, located on the turret at the end of the rover’s robotic arm. “The flower-like rock, which has been named the

Blackthorn Salt, is a diagenetic feature, or one made from minerals that precipitated from ancient water that had previously been mixed with Martian rock,” Abigail Fraeman, a planetary scientist and deputy project scientist for the Curiosity rover, was quoted as saying to Live Science. Diagenetic features found on Mars are similar in size but can have either a branched shape, also known as dendritic form, like the Blackthorn Salt, or be more rounded or even spherical, like other rocks in the same photo, she added. Professor James Goodwin, Director of science and research impact at the Brain Health Network, in the UK said while diets like Mediterranean regimen that are low on meat and high in plants, pulses, nuts and fish are given much importance, exercise habits deserve more attention. “An active lifestyle (weaving regular movement and exertion into the structure of your daily life, such as taking the stairs instead of the lift) as well as ‘purposeful exercise’ (eg

brisk walking to increase heart rate) is key,” Goodwin was quoted as saying to the Sydney Morning Herald. “Exercise itself - like being in the gym - is not an antidote to living a couchpotato lifestyle. We know that if you sit for over 10 hours a day, you can go to the gym all you like - those benefits are undermined by that inactivity. You’ve got to do both,” he added. In a nine-year study examining the link between fitness and Alzheimer’s risk, researchers at the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) found that those with the highest levels of cardiorespiratory fitness were 33 per cent less likely to develop the disease than those who were least fit. I-League: Mohammedan beat Deccan NAIHATI (WEST BENGAL), MAR 7 (IANS): Mohammedan Sporting has tried to maintain their hundred percent record this season in the ongoing I-League after coming from a goal behind to defeat Sreenidi Deccan 3-1 at the Naihati Stadium, here on Monday. The Black and White Brigade ensured victory and all thanks to a brace from frontman Marcus Joseph and a spot-kick from Andelo Rudovic, which cancelled out David Munoz’s first-half strike for Sreenidi Deccan. The victory consolidated Mohammedan Sporting’s lead at the top of the table with three wins from their first three matches. Sreenidi Deccan opened the contest in an energetic fashion and laid the first blow on their opponents in the 16th minute, when David Munoz picked up the ball after Mohammedan turned possession over in their half. The Colombian forward made them pay to full effect after producing a low drive from range which rifled into the bottom corner. After taking the lead, Sreenidi Deccan applied more pressure on their opponents, sensing vulnerability in the Black and White Brigade’s ranks. The warning signs were there to be seen as David Munoz put the ball in the back of

the net once again in the 27th minute, but his effort was ruled out for a foul in the build-up. After riding out Sreenidi Deccan’s continuous onslaught, the Black and White Brigade made their way back into the game through striker Marcus Joseph in the 40th minute. Captain Nikola Stojanovic claimed the assist for the goal as it was his leftfooted cross which was met by Joseph’s head inside the box, as the header nestled into the bottom-right corner of keeper Shibinraj Kunniyil’s goal. With scores level go-

ing into the break, it took a moment of magic from Mohammedan Sporting in the 51st minute to turn the contest around on its head. It was Marcus Joseph again with the goods; this time with a humdinger of a strike from 30 yards that left goalkeeper Shibinraj Kunniyil hapless as the ball arrowed past him like a bullet into the top corner. Chasing a hat-trick, Marcus Joseph found himself in the thick of the action once again in the 68th minute. Joseph unselfishly laid the ball across into the path of his teammate SK Faiaz this time, but Shib-

Indian Chess League slated for end-Sept start CHENNAI, MAR 7 (IANS): With the world’s top chess players being busy with various tournaments, the Indian Chess League (ICL) is expected to be held in September 2022 from the earlier announced June/ July 2022. “There are major chess events before September and the world’s top chess players may not be available for ICL. In June the FIDE Candidates tournament is slated. Hence the league is now slated for end September,” sources told IANS. If India wins the bid to hold the 44th Chess Olympiad which is expected to be held in July/August, then the ICL slated in September will have a huge advantage in terms of following and publicity. Thai autopsy says Warne died of natural causes

Sindhu, Srikanth and Lakshya lead India’s campaign at German Open

BANGKOK, MAR 7 (AP): Police in Thailand said Monday that an autopsy conducted on the body of Australian cricket star Shane Warne has concluded that he died of natural causes. A statement issued by deputy national police spokesperson Kissana Pathanacharoen said the opinion issued by the doctor who carried out the autopsy has been conveyed to Warne’s family and the Australian Embassy. It said the family did not have any doubt that the 52-year-old cricketer, widely considered one of the sport’s greatest spin bowlers, died of natural causes. The statement, issued ahead of a planned police news conference, did not specify the cause of death. Preliminary evaluations from Thai authorities suggested Warne died from a heart attack. Warne was found unresponsive in his hotel room on the Thai resort island of Samui on Friday and could not be revived at a nearby hospital. His body was transferred Sunday to the Thai mainland for an official autopsy at a state hospital. The statement said police would conclude the autopsy report and send it to the prosecutor’s office as soon as possible, a standard procedure in cases of unexpected deaths.

BERLIN, MAR 7 (PTI): Two-time Olympic medallist P.V. Sindhu and world championship medal-winners Kidambi Srikanth and Lakshya Sen will be the top Indian contenders at the German Open Super 300 badminton tournament, starting on Tuesday. While Sindhu eased to a title win at Syed Modi International and Lakshya grabbed his maiden Super 500 trophy at Indian Open in January, Srikanth saw the momentum of the World Championships fizzle out after withdrawing from Indian Open due to COVID-19 infection. The Lucknow title was Sindhu’s first since the World Championship gold in 2019, and it must have eased the pressure a bit. But she will have to hit top gear during the European leg in a hectic year, which also has the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games. Sindhu, seeded seventh, will open her campaign against Thailand’s world no 11 Busanan Ongbamrungphan this week. A win will bring her face-to-face with Denmark’s Mia Blichfeldt, and another possible victory can see her clash with top seed and Olympic silver-medallist Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei. World silver-medallist Lakshya, too, has been in fine form, making good

use of the opportunities that came his way as he first claimed the bronze at Huelva, Spain, and then lifted the India Open title in January. He was also the only bright spot during India’s campaign at Asia Team Championships in Malaysia last month. Lakshya will star t his campaign against Thailand’s Kantaphon Wa n g c h a r o e n . I f t h e 20-year-old from Almora puts it past the Thai, he is likely to meet fourth seed Anthony Sinisuka Ginting of Indonesia. Meanwhile, Srikanth started training as soon as he recovered from Covid-19 and is eager to find his rhythm. “This is an important year, and I just want to train well and play to the best of my ability,” Srikanth said.

The eighth-seeded Indian will face France’s Brice Leverdez in his campaign opener. A win is likely to pit him against China’s Lu Guang Zu in the second round, and if Srikanth can cross the hurdle, he is expected to take on top seed and reigning Olympic champion Viktor Axelsen. It is an important year for HS Prannoy as well as he continues his comeback after recovering from lingering side-effects of COVID-19. A former top 10 player, Prannoy reached three back-to-back quarterfinals -- the World Championship, India Open, and Syed Modi International -- and would look to carry the momentum when he faces seventhseeded Ng Ka Long Angus in his opening round.

Australia trial Pakistan by 27 runs in 1st Test RAWALPINDI, MAR 7 (AP): Australia’s batters flourished on a flat wicket Monday to cut Pakistan’s lead to 27 runs as the first test heads toward a draw. Australia, playing its first test in Pakistan since 1998, reached 449-7 at stumps in its first innings on Day 4 on a grassless wicket with Marnus Labuschagne (90) and Steve Smith (78) scoring half centuries. Cameroon Green (48) showed himself to be a test allrounder by spending more than two hours at the crease, facing 109 balls. No. 8 batter Mitchell Starc spent almost the last hour and was not out on 12 with skipper Pat Cummins not out on 4 as stumps were drawn three overs before scheduled because of bad light. Pakistan had declared its first innings at 476-4 late on Day 2 on the back of big centuries from Azhar Ali (185) and Imam-ul-

Haq (157). Opening batter Usman Khawaja narrowly missed out on a century in the country of his birth on Sunday when he was dismissed for 97, but shared a rapid 156-run opening wicket stand with David Warner, who made 68. On a docile wicket where there was no appreciable turn for the spinners, left-arm spinner Nauman Ali grabbed 4-107 mainly because Australia’s batters went for extravagant shots.

Labuschagne was the second Australian batsman to fell in the 90s when he was caught in the slip in Shaheen Afridi’s (1-80) third over with the new ball after a wet outfield following overnight rain prevented any play in the first session. Labuschagne hit 12 boundaries in his knock but attempted a drive off a wide delivery from Afridi as Abdullah Shafique grabbed a well judged low catch in the lone slip.

Travis Head (8) was a rare batsman to fail in a batter-dominated test match when he edged Nauman to wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan while going for a cut shot as Pakistan claimed two wickets in the mid session. Green showed lot of determination in his 81-run stand with Smith before Nauman induced false strokes from both batsmen by bowling consistently outside the leg stump line in the last session. Green smashed two of his three boundaries in Nauman’s one over but topedged a sweep to short fine leg. Smith also went for a similar shot and was caught by Rizwan down the leg side. Smith, who hasn’t scored a test century since the 2019 Ashes, batted for nearly five hours, hitting eight fours during his 196ball knock before he was nicely setup by Nauman to go for an over ambitious shot.

Real move 8 pts clear; VAR helps Barca to controversial win Middleton stars as Milwaukee

MADRID, MAR 7 (IANS): Real Madrid ended the 27th round of games in La Liga with an eight-point lead over second-placed Sevilla after beating Real Sociedad 4-1, while Sevilla were held away to Alaves. Real Madrid warmed up for Wednesday’s Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain with an easy win despite falling behind to Mikel Oyarzabal’s 10th-minute penalty. That was Real Sociedad’s only shot in the game as Real Madrid controlled the ball and turned the game around in five minutes before halftime, with Eduardo Camavinga’s 30-yard shot and an impressive finish from Luka Modric. K a r i m B e n z e m a ’s 76th-minute penalty made it 3-1 and Marco Asensio added a fourth three minutes later to secure an easy win. Sevilla, meanwhile, failed to create enough chances to win away to struggling Alaves in a goalless draw that helps neither side, Xinhua reports. controversy. Fidel put Elche ahead on the stroke of half-time and the home side deserved their lead after an impressive first 45 minutes. Barca substitute Ferran Torres equalised from close range just before the hour mark, however, as Elche began to sit deeper to defend their advantage. Memphis De pay scored the winning goal from the penalty spot with seven minutes left to play after Antonio Barragan was harshly adjudged to have handled by VAR.

Elche were further angered when VAR failed to give them a penalty after the ball hit Jordi Alba’s hand following a corner and substitute Javier Pastore was sent off for his protests from the bench. Atletico Madrid are now fourth after Joao Felix netted twice in their 3-1 win away to Real Betis. The Portuguese forward netted in the first minute, and although Cristian Tello equalised in a first half that saw Sime Vrsaljko, Angel Correa and Andres Guardado all go off injured,

Felix’s second of the match after 60 minutes put Atletico back in front and Thomas Lemar assured the win with 10 minutes left to play. Chimy Avila’s 62ndminute header saw Osasuna to a 1-0 win at home to Villarreal and ended the visitors’ impressive recent run of results. Espanyol returned to winning ways with a 2-0 win at home to Getafe thanks to Leandro Cabreras’s powerful 18th-minute header and an unfortunate own goal from Erick Cabaco, who saw David Soria’s punched

clearance bounced off him into the net. Iago Aspas’ 97thminute penalty gave Celta Vigo a thrilling 4-3 win at home to Real Mallorca, who thought they had taken a point after Salva Sevilla had drawn them level from the penalty spot in the 87th minute. Aspas scored twice for Celta, along with Thiago Galhardo and Denis Suarez, while Sevilla, Giovanni Gonzalez, and an own goal netted for the visitors. Second-half goals from Ruben Alcaraz and Oussama Idrissi (the second after a bad error from Luca Zidane), gave Cadiz a vital first home win of the season as they defeated Rayo Vallecano 2-0. The game pitted the teams with the worst home and away records in La Liga, with Cadiz able to take advantage of tiredness among the Rayo players after their Copa del Rey semifinal on Thursday. F i n a l l y, G r a n a da sacked coach Robert Moreno after a 3-1 defeat in Valencia, who had three second-half goals in 17 minutes from Goncalo Guedes, Maxi Gomez and a Carlos Soler penalty.

Elsewhere, Jayson Tatum scored 54 points as the Boston Celtics left it late to beat the Brooklyn Nets 126-120. ISSF World Cup: India top medal tally

CAIRO, MAR 7 (PTI): India’s Rhythm Sangwan and Anish Bhanwala won the gold medal in the 25m rapid fire pistol mixed team event on the concluding day of the ISSF World Cup here on Monday. The Indian duo emerged victorious by a margin of 17-7 over Thailand in the gold medal match. The countr y thus topped the medal’s tally with four gold, two silver and one bronze as the year’s first ISSF World Cup concluded in the Egyptian capital. On the final day of competitions, India also won a silver in the men’s 25m rapid fire pistol event, going down to Germany 7-17 in the title decider. Rhythm and Anish made it through to the gold medal match after finishing second in round two of qualification with a score of 370 out of 400. Thailand’s Paduka Chawisa and Ram Khamhaeng had topped the qualification with 381 to setup the title clash with India. Esha Singh and Bhavesh Shekhawat, the second Indian pair in the

top eight stage, ended in fifth position with 356 points. Earlier, in the 10team qualification stage one, Rhythm and Anish had topped the field with a score of 566 out of 600, to Paduka and Ram’s 562. Esha and Bhavesh just made it through to the next round with a score of 539 for an eighth-place finish. In the final, where two points are awarded to the team with the highest cumulative score after each member has shot a 5-shot rapid fire series, Rhythm and Anish needed 12 rounds to cross the coveted 16-point mark required to win. It was close in the beginning with the scores reading 7-5 in India’s

favour after the first six rounds. However, Rhythm and Anish did not lose any of the subsequent six rounds, splitting points in only two of them, to seal gold. The men’s 25m rapid fire pistol team competition saw India taking on Germany in the gold medal match. The German team which had Rio Olympic champion Christian Reitz, besides Geis Oliver and Peter Florian, proved superior to the Indian trio of Gurpreet Singh, Anish Bhanwala and Bhavesh Shekhawat. This was India’s second silver of the competition after Esha Singh’s individual silver in the women’s 10m air pistol event.

Man City overpower United 4-1 in derby MANCHESTER, MAR 7 (IANS): Premier League champions Manchester City produced a stunning display to beat arch-rivals Manchester United 4-1 and restore a six-point advantage over Liverpool at the top of the table. Two goals by Kevin De Bruyne ensured City edged a keenly-contested first half, going 2-1 up. Pep Guardiola’s side shifted through the gears in the second-half. Riyad Mahrez added two more goals to his tally in the second period, with Guardiola’s men utterly dominant and perhaps a little disappointed not to have won by an even bigger margin. With less than five minutes on the clock, Kevin De Bruyne provided Manchester City with a superb start. Jack Grealish and Bernardo Silva combined well on the left of the United box, with the Portuguese then squeezing a low cross into the box where De Bruyne arrived to sweep the ball past David De Gea and score his 50th Premier League goal in the process. H owe ve r, U n i t e d weren’t able to fight back and City secured all three points in the second half. Guardiola’s side had a couple of early chances blocked following the break. First De Bruyne was closed down after City had won the ball in the United box, then Silva had a strike stopped by United putting their bodies on the line.

ATKMB had a couple of chances in the first 20 minutes. The first one, attempted by Subhasish Bose went wide while the second effort coming in the 17th minute off Joni Kauko was brilliantly blocked by Hartley. Ritwik Das gave JFC the winning moment in the 57th minute when he neatly placed the ball home past a hapless ATKMB goalkeeper Amrinder Singh after receiving the ball off a deflected Greg Stewart effort. The play-offs will see Jamshedpur FC taking on the fourth-placed Kerala Blasters in the first leg of the semifinals on March 11 while ATKMB, which finished third with 37 points, will meet secondplaced Hyderabad FC (38) in the second match on March 12. The second leg matches are on March 15 and 16.

The Nigar Sultana-led side crumbled under the pressure, slipping to 81 for three after 15 overs, their positive start undone by losing three wickets for 21 runs. Ritu Moni (4) could not make her usual cameo as Devine pouched the catch that gave Satterthwaite her 50th wicket in ODI cricket. With the feat she joins an illustrious group to have made 3,000 runs and taken 50 wickets in one-day internationals, including the likes of Charlotte Edwards, Karen Rolton and Stafanie Taylor.

Chhetri ruled out of friendlies due to injuries

NEW DELHI, MAR 7 (IANS): Veteran India football striker and captain Sunil Chhetri has been ruled out of the two international friendlies against Bahrain and Belarus in Manama later this month as he is suffering from “a few injuries” that need “time to heal”. The All India Football Federation (AIFF) had recently announced a 38-member list of probables for the preparatory camp scheduled to kick off in Pune on March 11. India will play Bahrain on March 23, while they will take on Belarus on March 26. “I was really looking forward to the two friendlies against Bahrain and Belarus and it’s a shame I’ll be missing out. It’s been a long, tough season and I’ve suffered a few small injuries that need time to heal. I will be doing all I can to recover in time for the predatory camp in May,” Chhetri told AIFF. “The potential this squad possesses is immense, and a lot of the lads are riding high on confidence on the back of good performances in the League (ISL and I-League) season. I’m certain we’ll put our best foot forward. I’m wishing the team all the luck,” said the 37-year-old Chhetri. The players along with head coach Igor Stimac and support staff will assemble in Pune on March 10. Those players whose clubs would be playing in the semifinals of the Indian Super League (ISL) will join the camp as and when their club commitments end.
