BJP sweeps UP, U’khand; Cong wins Punjab

NEW DELHI, MAR 11 (IANS): The BJP swept to an unprecedented two-thirds majority in Uttar Pradesh and bagged Uttarakhand too and was neck and neck with the Congress in Goa and Manipur in the country’s biggest mandate since the 2014 Lok Sabha polls. The Congress returned to power in Punjab after a 10-year gap.

A euphoric Bharatiya Janata Party called it a “historic” verdict that would make a major impact on Indian politics even as the Congress admitted it was stunned by the scale of the verdict in favour of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

From being the third largest group in the 403member Uttar Pradesh assembly, the BJP, powered by an aggressive campaign spearheaded by Modi, catapulted to winning a whopping 324 seats -- a never-before showing by any party in the country’s most populous state.

The victory left the ruling Samajwadi Party and its ally Congress punctured with just 55 seats while the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) was left a pathetic 19 seats.

While Samajwadi Party

leader and Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav promptly resigned, BSP leader Mayawati attributed the rout to the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) which she said were manipulated.

“The historic mandate given to the BJP will give a new direction to Indian politics. It will end the politics of caste, dynasty (parivarvaad) and appeasement,” BJP President Amit Shah said.

The BJP, he added, would form governments in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur.

The Congress suffered

an equally humiliating defeat in neighbouring Uttarakhand too. The BJP ousted it from power, winning 57 of the 70 seats, some of the victors being disgruntled Congress veterans who had joined the saffron outfit.

The Congress was left with just 11 legislators, with outgoing Chief Minister Harish Rawat losing both the seats he contested, one narrowly, to his BJP opponents.

“It is a monumental setback.

We are disappointed with Uttar Pradesh,” Congress spokesman Sanjay Jha said.

D IMAPUR, MAR 11 (NPN): State government has constituted an eightmember Political Affairs Mission (PAM) under the chairmanship of the chief minister, Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu.

In a press communiqué, the commissioner and secretary to CM, I. Himato Zhimomi, said the PAM’s mandate was to look into the existing socio-political issue in the state that required urgent attention, for the betterment of the Naga society.

T h e c o m mu n i q u é stated that PAM so constituted by the chief minister superseded the Political Affairs Committee and all other similar committees constituted earlier. PAM would co-opt other members as and when required, it added.

But other party leaders rushed to defend Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi, saying he alone must not be blamed for the rout in Uttar Pradesh, where the Congress, having become in recent decades an also-ran, aligned with the Samajwadi Party just before the staggered assembly election.

BJP-ruled Goa, however, appeared headed for a hung assembly, with both the Congress and the BJP claiming they will form the government in the coastal state.

The Congress inched towards becoming the single largest party in the 40-member house winning 18 seats while the BJP had netted 14.

The balance of power now lay in the hands of smaller parties including Goa Forward and the MGP. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was routed.

With 28 winners, the Congress also led the BJP (22 winners) in the troubled northeastern state of Manipur that it rules. But with both groups falling short of a majority in the 60-member house, smaller parties will

play a key role in government formation. The Congress had plenty to celebrate in Punjab where it returned to power comfortably after a decade in the opposition, crushing both the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP combine as well as the AAP that was confident of winning in the border state.

Led by former Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, who turned 75 on Saturday, the Congress won as many as 77 of the 117 seats, leaving the AAP with just 22 seats but as the main opposition in the assembly. The Akals and BJP had just 18 seats, with as many as 10 ministers worsted in the battle.

The AAP, which had invested heavily in Punjab, licked its wounds, its leaders saying they would introspect to know what went wrong.

In Uttar Pradesh, the BJP’s success rate enveloped both urban and rural areas and appeared to demolish traditional caste equations.

BJP candidates won in all major cities including Lucknow, Allahabad, Kanpur and Varanasi, Modi’s Lok Sabha constituency.

IMPHAL, MAR 11: Congress in Manipur managed to beat off a strong anti-incumbency besides the entire weight of the BJP government at the Centre by winning 28 seats, three short of simple majority in a 60member house.

The BJP which was earlier expected to win outright managed to win a record 21 seats on its own for the first time in Manipur. BJP could not open its account in the last election won 21 seats.

NPP made its debut to state election by securing four seats. For the NPF and LJP, there was no improvement so far as the number of candidates won in the last elections. Both the parties bagged four and one respectively in the last elections too.

Among the prominent leaders of Congress who won the elections include among other incumbent chief minister O Ibobi, deputy chief minister Gaikhangam, MPCC president TN Haokip, social welfare minister AK Meerabai and agriculture minister Md Nasir.

The Congress will bank on support from the Trinamool Congress which won one seat, an independent and even four NPP members to stake claim to for the government.

NSLSA organises legal activities in Kma, Phek, Kiphire

DIMAPUR: Nagaland State Legal Services Authority (NSLSA) has been organising various legal activities across the state.

ing district wise orientation training for para legal volunteers and panel lawyers starting from March 11 in Dimapur and March 16 in Zunheboto, March18 in Wokha, March 24 in Longleng, March 25 in Mokokchung, March 24 in Peren, March 29 in Phek, March 30 in Kiphire, April 1 in Tuensang, April 7 in Kohima from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the District Court Building.

NSLSA has invited all those who desire to enrol themselves as para legal volunteers, to attend the said training at their respective district headquarters.

Painting competition at Jakhama

DIMAPUR: A painting competition was organized for school students by 44 Mountain Brigade under the aegis of the Red Shield Mountain Division at the premises of the Loyola School, Jakhama on Saturday under the theme of the competition was “Incredible Nagaland – The Land of Festivals”.

Officiating commander of the 44 Mountain Brigade was the chief guest while judges for the event included Dr. Dnyandev Borole, scientist from National Institute of Oceanography, Dr. Devyani Borole and Father Victor, principal Loyola School.

Prizes were awarded to the first three winners and two consolation prizes in each category.

Loyola School was adjudged the best school and was awarded the trophy for overall best performance.

Altogether 81 students from six different schools in three different categories- primary, middle and secondary schools levels participated in the competition.

KET gives away scholarship to 183 students across state

DIMAPUR: Kohima Educational Trust (KET) on March 10, gave away scholarships to 183 students from all over Nagaland for the year 2017. The scholarship was distributed by KET chairman, David Shaw.

Kohima Educational Society (KET) counsellor Pfelie Kesiezie in his speech gave an introduction of KET chairman saying that he was familiar with the Kohima reunions and memorial services from his time as Commander 15 (North East) Brigade.

manding 40 Regiment, Royal Artillery, in Germany and Bosnia and Director of Army Media and Communication and is a member of the Lowland Branch of the Reserve Forces and Cadets Association and is one of Her Majesty’s Commissioners at Queen Victoria School, Dunblane.

Speaking at the programme, David said that KET was a group of trustees who have been thinking of ways to keep the battle of Kohima in people’s mind and remembering the ones who gave their lives and to raise money to give to educational projects in

Nagaland.

It may be mentioned that veterans resolved to found the Kohima Educational Trust (KET) as a debt of honour to the Naga people.

The trust has been seen by its founders both as a means of sustaining the memory of the courage and sacrifice of those who fought and died in the battle, and of honouring the Nagas who were their allies in the war through assisting the education of succeeding generations of Naga children. Earlier, the programme was chaired by Dr. P. Ngully.

British Council provides online library memberships

DIMAPUR: British Council has provided free membership of its online library to the 184 scholarship awardees of the Kohima Educational Trust (KET) for 2017. The online library provides access to a range of premium e-resources and can be accessed from anywhere in India.

In a press release, KET president, Charles Chasie informed that the initiative marks the beginning of a five-year partnership between the British Council and the Kohima Educational Trust. He said more initiatives would be announced as part of the UK-India Year of Culture in 2017. USSC serves 30-day NIDC felicitates new chairman Thongwang ultimatum on edn deptt.

DIMAPUR: United Sangtam Students’ Conference (USSC) while taking serious concern over the career of the students in the district has put forward threepoint demands and have asked the state education department to redress it within 30 days.

In a press release, USSC vice president, Achumba Thonger and assistant general secretary, Selicho Sangtam has appealed for immediate transfer of a science teacher from the district. It claimed that despite repeated appeal and show cause, the errant teacher has failed to attend the school since submitting the joining report.

USSC has also demanded the education department to immediately retain a science teacher from Government Higher Secondary School Amahator to Government Higher Secondary School Kiphire.

Against the retirement of two teachers and against the promotion of another, USSC said that they should be reinstated or relieved respectively.

Also, USSC has pointed out that Government Higher Secondary School Kiphire being the lone Government Secondary School in the district has been running with single science teacher with

the total enrollment of 425 students.

As such, the conference said that the status of the school was lying in a very sorry state. Therefore, USSC has appealed the department to expedite the matter and fulfill the genuine demand on exigency basis.

Demands release of teachers salary

Expressing concern over the “pathetic condition” of the educational system in Nagaland, USSC has appealed the state government to release pending salaries of teachers at the earliest.

In a release, USSC vice president Achumba Thonger and general secretary Lipong Mongzar expressed dismay at the “lackadaisical attitude” of the state government, saying it was obnoxious to learn that salaries of all the SSA, RMSA and Hindi Teachers were pending for several months jeopardizing the smooth functioning of the Schools.

USSC said most of the teacher takes advantage of non payment of salaries for their irregularities which hampers the career of the students.

The conference has urged the state government and the nodal department to seriously initiate necessary corrective modes at the earliest.

DIMAPUR: Nagaland Industrial Development Corporation Ltd (NIDC) welcomed the 32nd chairman of the corporation, Thongwang Konyak who is also advisor DUDA, LM and CP on Saturday at its head office, Dimapur.

While addressing the NIDC employees, Thongwang said, NIDC being an apex financial institution in the state, he would try to find new avenues for uplifting the corporation.

Thongwang said that his tenure as chairman of the corporation would be short in view of the next general election of the state early 2018.

KIPHIRE: Sanphure Village Students’ Union (SVSU) along with Village Education Committee (VEC) and public has resolved not to entertain “replacement or proxy” teachers within its jurisdiction.

In a press statement, SVSU president Rachel T and general secretary Aliba stated that the resolution was adopted on December 29, 2016 during the student body general meeting as the practice hampers the future of the students. The student body has also reminded the concern authority not to issue or entertain any transfer of teacher without reliever. Further, SVSU has warned that incumbent teachers who were yet to be in their respective posting place (Sanphure Village) to be present on or before March 14, failing which, the union said it would not be held responsible for any consequences.

A police official said that Dr Sandipani Malla Bujarbaruah had lodged compliant accusing Marak, who is a Parliamentary Secretary Health and Family Welfare and his aide tortured him at gunpoint on March 5 at Public Work Department Inspection Bungalow in Rongjeng village under East Garo Hills district.

Stating that the pharmacies have become the source of illegal psychotropic drugs, Sangma called for strengthening the Health Department. In terms of regulation, Sangma said the Inspectorate of Drugs would be directed to take stock record of drugs in pharmacies every month and ensure that psychotropic drugs are not sold without prescriptions.

A case has been registered against Sengnam N Marak, Rongjeng Mla and also Parliamentary Secretary, after an FIR was registered against him by the doctor at Williamnagar police station yesterday, the official said.

The matter is under investigation and no arrest has been made so far, he

SHILLONG, MAR 11 (AGENCIES): The driver involved in the East Jaintia Hills road accident on March 8 that claimed three lives is absconding.

Making a suo motu statement on the incident on Friday, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said three persons, 70-year-old Kalbina Pakem and 54-year-old Rophina Paslein, both from Khahnar village, and fiveyear-old Pdianghunlangki Lamurong of Mooknor village were killed and 39 others injured on March 8 morning when the Mahindra Pick-up in which they were travelling lost control at Khahnar and overturned.

The government announced an ex gratia of Rs 50,000 to the next of kin of each of the deceased and Rs 10,000 to each injured person. The vehicle coming from Mooknor village was proceeding towards Saipung PHC for eye checkup conducted by Bansara Eye Clinic.

The chief minister said the accident was due to extremely bad road condition and rash and negligent driving. Besides, the vehicle was carrying 40-45 passengers. The driver identified as Kyrshanlang Lamurong (24) from Mooknor village is ab-

Celluloid tribute to freedom fighter GUWAHATI, MAR 11 (AGENCIES): A Hindi-language film on Kanaklata, one of the first martyrs of the freedom movement in Assam, will hit the screen nationally on Friday. ‘Purab Ki Awaaz’ has been directed by Chandra Mudoi and features Urmila Mahanta in the eponymous role.

Kanaklata was just 14 when she was shot by the police when she was leading a rally against the British. “I’m honoured to play the role of Kanaklata on celluloid. With the film being made in Hindi, it’s an opportunity to bring her onto the national platform.

I’m pretty excited,” Urmila told TOI from Mumbai.

Urmila, an Assam girl based in Mumbai, has establish herself as an actor over the last several years.

In this film, where she is

working with Chandra Mudoi for the first time, she plays a double role.

“This is a great moment for all of us on the eve of the release of the film. I hope people will love the film. At the same time, someone like Kanaklata, who made a supreme sacrifice at a young age will be known nationally through my film,” said director Mudoi.

He said the bravery of martyrs like Bhagat Singh and Mangal Pandey are known nationally but the role of martyr Kanaklata is yet to be known outside Assam.

A version of the film in Assamese will also be released. The major roles in both the films are enacted

by Nipon Goswami, Debashish Barthakur, Manimala, Tapan Sarma and Rina Bora, among others.

GUWAHATI, Mar 11 (AGENCIES): After three years of fruitless effort ONGC has got a major success in the Jorhat basin where it has struck oil in two locations and estimates say that the oil reserves in the area could be to the tune of 10 million metric tonnes.

The two wells, one each at Sufaiyam and Dayalpur near Merapani, are now producing around 50 tonnes of oil daily, thus taking the total daily production of Jorhat Asset from 350 tonnes to 400 tonnes. Production at the wells started about two months back.

“The discovery was made about four months back. A facility was immediately created and within two months production started. We have made a reserve accretion of 10 MMT in the area,” Ved Prakash Mahawar, director (onshore) of ONGC, said.

The reserves are said to be the biggest discovery in Assam after a gap of three years.

IMPHAL, Mar 11: Anti-AFPSA crusader Irom Chanu Sharmila and her party, Peoples Resurgence and Justice Alliance (PRJA) suffered a humiliating defeat in the elections to the 11th Manipur Legislative Assembly.

All the three candidates including the human right activist turned politician even lost their deposits.

Sharmila who fought the elections against incumbent chief minister O Ibobi at Thoubal Assembly constituency secured only 90 votes while PRJA convener Erendro Leichombam who contested the election from Thangmeiband A/C secured 573 votes and Najima Bibi, the first among the Muslim woman of Manipur who contested the election from Wabgai A/C of Thoubal district ended with only 33 votes.

All together PRJA got only 696 votes. The Iron lady of Manipur Irom Chanu Sharmila who floated a new political party, Peoples

her nearby 16 year long fasting struggle to change her campaign against AFSPA. To make a debut in the politics, she chose to fight against the three time chief minister of the state O Ibobi Singh.

Her defeat was an anticipated one but none expect such a humiliating defeat.

However, it may be recalled that her decision to end the years long fast that made her popular among the masses not only in the state and country but in the international arena was started eroding when she stunted everyone after declared ending her fasting struggle and joined the politics.

Not only her family including her mother, people supporting her cause had stayed away from the day she broke her fast and was released by the police.

A large-section of Manipuri did not like her decision to end her hunger strike and joining politics as politics is considered to be a dirty game in the state.

High Court judge orders case against CJI, SC judges

Justice C S Karnan KO L K ATA , M A R 1 1 (AGENCIES/IANS): Calcutta high court judge C S Karnan held a “court” session at his residence on Friday , within hours of the Supreme Court issuing a bailable warrant for his arrest, and “ordered” that a case be registered under relevant sections of the SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against Chief Justice of India J S Khehar, other apex court judges and attorney general Mukul Rohatgi.

The other apex court judges against whom Karnan wants a case registered are Justices Dipak Mishra, J Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, Madan B Lokur, Pinaki Chandra Ghose and Kurian Joseph. Addressing a presser at his residence, Karnan said the SC had “no locus standi” to issue a bailable warrant against a sitting judge. “This is intentional and I am being targeted for being a Dalit.

The warrant against me is unconstitutional,” he said.

Karnan is the first serving HC judge in judicial history to have an arrest warrant issued against him by the apex court in a contempt case. A sevenjudge bench headed by CJI Khehar took strong note of Karnan’s non-appearance despite being served with a contempt notice and asked the Bengal DGP to execute the warrant to ensure the judge’s presence at 10.30am on March 31.

A defiant Karnan also issued an “order” directing the CBI to register and probe cases under Article 226 and CrPc Section 482 against a host of judges from different courts for corruption, rape and embezzlement. “I had written to the PM to initiate investigations against at least 22 corrupt judges.

It is because I was bold to bring charges against them that I am being cornered now. I am a Dalit and that is why I am being targeted,” he said. He also appealed to the President to revoke the warrant against him. “Only the President can restore my prestige now and I appeal to his good offices,” Karnan said. He argued that it was an unprecedented move to hold court in this manner but added that “if the law keepers of the country have taken an unpreced ented route to malign me, I’ve the power to take an unprecedented route to fight back”.

On February 8, the SC had stripped Karnan of all judicial and administrative work and asked him to personally appear in court on February 13 to explain why contempt action should not be initiated against him for improper conduct and intemperate remarks.

Karnan observed that no contempt action, either civil or criminal, can be initiated against a sitting HC judge under Sections 2(c), 12 and 14 of the Contempt of Courts Act or under Article 20 of the Constitution. “Only a motion of impeachment can be initiated against a sitting judge of the higher judiciary before the Parliament after due enquiry under the Judges’

Enquiry Act”.

He added, “The SC shares equal power and rights with all the HCs of the country . It is not my master and I am not its servant. I will not appear before the SC.”

Karnan terms arrest warrant as wrong

Terming the bailable warrant issued against him by a seven-judge Supreme Court Constitution bench ‘wrong’, Calcutta High Court Justice C.S. Karnan on Saturday said the order should not be executed against him.

Asked by reporters at his residence in New Town here whether he will appear before the apex court as directed, he retorted: “Why?” He alleged the “honourable judges having poor knowledge in the legal field committed the error”.

This was Justice Karnan’s second interaction with the media in as many days. On Friday, he told the media that the Supreme Court’s bailable warrant against him was “unconstitutional and a deliberate attempt to ruin my life” as a Dalit judge.

The apex court on Friday issued a bailable warrant against Justice Karnan for refusing to heed summons to appear before it in a contempt case initiated suo motu by the court.

Work on super expressway to begin this year

JAIPUR/NEW DELHI, MAR 11 (AGENCIES): Highways minister Nitin Gadkari on Friday promised that work will start this year on a super expressway between Jaipur and Delhi that will reduce travel time between the outskirts of Gurgaon and the outer periphery of the Pink City to 90 minutes. Gadkari made this announcement at a public function in Dausa, Rajasthan.

The distance between Delhi and Jaipur is 260 km.

The proposed super expressway , between the outskirts of Gurgaon and Jaipur, will cover 200 km. It will be impossible to cover this distance in 90 minutes sticking to the noti fied speed limit, which is 100 kmph for expressways in India (for highways it’s 90). Gadkari said the government will notify different speed limits for such super expressways. pressways. At present, commuting between Delhi and Jaipur takes around 5-6 hours. Urging Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje to start the process of land acquisition for the project, Gadkari said: “The Haryana government has cleared the alignment. I request Rajeji to complete land acquisition and give approval for that alignment so that we can start the work this year.” Gadkari told TOI in Delhi that the present speed limit was fixed at 100 kmph as the country has very few expressways.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is called bhaiyaji and in this name for her is the acknowledgment that Priyanka is the tough one. It is a refrain that is set to grow louder in the coming days in Raebareli, Amethi and beyond Uttar Pradesh.

For the Congress this election in UP stood out not just for the alliance with SP but also for the fact that it was a solo show by Rahul Gandhi. Sonia Gandhi did no campaign while Priyanka went to Raebareli for only two rallies, both accompanied by Rahul. The party made it very clear, however, that Priyanka was the architect of the alliance and that she was micro-managing the polls. “She is controlling everything and, in fact, has more knowledge about all the constituencies,” veteran leader Ghulam Nabi Azad assured the sceptics.

But for most Congress workers this just wasn’t enough, yet every SOS sent to bring Priyanka fell on deaf ears. As elections progressed it was clear that for the SP-Congress alliance things weren’t going according to plans, especially after the fourth phase. But having taken a conscious call not to bring Priyanka in, the only way out for the Congress was to make her presence

felt through proxy. Azad was asked to address the media and tell them that Priyanka was the boss and she was very much in the picture.

But why was Priyanka kept away? In the last Assembly polls in UP, Priyanka had addressed about 50 sabhas and had parked herself in Raebareli and Amethi till the last vote was cast.

Party sources say that at a strategy meeting in October it was suggested

by Prashant Kishor that Priyanka should either be the CM face or at least station herself in the state and campaign all over. But as talks of a SP-Congress alliance firmed up, Priyanka decided to opt out. It was decided by her that the focus should be on the UP ke ladke. It was felt that any word from her or speech would take the attention away from Rahul.

Most within the party accept the fact that in comparison to Rahul, it is Priyanka who is more articulate and would grab eyeballs. While it was okay for a Dimple Yadav to be beside Akhilesh, it was not okay for Priyanka to be seen beside her brother.

In the last Lok Sabha polls and Assembly elections as well, Priyanka’s attack on Modi and Smriti Irani had consistently grabbed headlines for days. This didn’t suit the strategists this time round.

The upshot: Congress is staring at its worst ever defeat in Uttar Pradesh – a

state home to the NehruGandhis – with its score being limited to 7 seats.

So once again, why was Priyanka kept out of the scene in such a crucial election?

Well, the apprehension was that Priyanka in Amethi and Raebareli would shift the focus away from Akhilesh and Rahul. Priyanka was scheduled to be in Amethi for three days but this was cancelled at the last minute. The reason given was that her son had an eye ailment for which she had to go to Hyderabad.

But the real reason also lay in the fact that Priyanka would be a distraction. The sister towers over the brother when they are on the field of action. Ask any party worker or a journalist.

In fact, not just Priyanka, it was a conscious call that Sonia too would stay away. While the decision of Rahul to take over as party president is a long-project waiting to happen, this was Sonia’s way of sending the message that henceforth all elections and big events of the party would have Rahul as its face. And then there is a whimper of a plan to “save” Priyanka for the grand finale in 2019. By herself, Priyanka has to answer if she accepts the blame for this near-decimation.

After all, she was the strategist credited with cobbling together the alliance and was claimed to be “micromanaging” things.

A

n incident that took place on March 6 in Silapathar when the Nikhil Bharat Bengali Udbastu Samannay Samittee (NiBBUS) activists attacked and ransacked the All Assam Students Union(AASU) office has sparked the flame of communalism of another kind in Assam. The LeftDemocratic Mancha, Assam has alleged that the RSS-BJP combine masterminded and engineered the Silapathar incident under the banner of NiBBUSS with an ugly design to create division between the Hindu Bengalis and local people. Subodh Biswas, the prime accused in the March 6 Silapathar incident, has been evading arrest for whom a bounty of Rs.one lakh was announced. The provocative demands and statements of the leaders of the NiBBUSS and the attack on the AASU office were part of the conspiracies hatched by the RSS and BJP, it alleged. The attack on the AASU office has led several organizations, including All Assam Students Union (AASU) and Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) to protest vehemently against the activists of Nikhil Bharat Bangali Udbastu Samanvay Samiti (NIBBUSS)for the rampage and attack on the AASU office at Silapathar in northern Assam’s Dhemaji district.

The NiBBUSS is said to be an organisation that is allegedly being patronised by the BJP for vote bank politics. Though the BJP has denied any involvement with Subodh Biswas, yet according to Assam papers, he was seen with various senior national BJP leaders at various functions.The BJP government at the Centre had promised to grant Indian citizenship to Bangladeshi Hindus without having to produce documents. Critics see this as a dubious method where it seeks to grant citizenship to religious minorities from Bangladesh on the one hand and deporting illegal (Muslim) immigrants from Bangladesh on the other.

The people of Assam would not have any of such differentiation or preferential treatment for any religious community- be it Hindu or Muslim. The people of Assam reiterate that a foreigner is a foreigner, irrespective of whatever religious background. The BJP government in Assam is beginning to feel the heat over the Citizenship(Amendment) Act, 1955.

The electoral alliance in 2016 brought all anti-Congress forces together under North East Democratic Alliance(NEDA) and within which also included the AGP, AASU, Bodos etc. However , the simmering anger against the Narendra Modi government’s decision to revise the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 1955, has reached its boiling point and today, there are visible frictions within NEDA. Dozens of ethnic and political organisations in the state fear that the Centre’s decision, which violates the Assam Accord, could result in the marginalisation of its indigenous people. If amended, the Act would enable the over 1.5 lakh undocumented Hindu Bangladeshis residing in the state to get Indian citizenship, which would be contradictory to the Assam Accord that deems any person – whether a Hindu or Muslim – as “illegal” if found entering the state from Bangladesh after March 24, 1971. AGP wanted anyone entering the country after March, 1971 to be deported irrespective of their religion, whereas the notification of the present government said that religious minorities which entered the country till December 31, 2014 will be allowed to stay even without relevant documents. If the BJP delivers, it will certainly cause far reaching ramifications in the region and drive it further to another unrest.

Obedience to the “Heavenly Vision”

I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision. —Acts 26:19 If we lose “the heavenly vision” God has given us, we alone are responsible— not God. We lose the vision because of our own lack of spiritual growth. If we do not apply our beliefs about God to the issues of everyday life, the vision God has given us will never be fulfilled. The only way to be obedient to “the heavenly vision” is to give our utmost for His highest— our best for His glory. This can be accomplished only when we make a determination to continually remember God’s vision. But the acid test is obedience to the vision in the details of our everyday life— sixty seconds out of every minute, and sixty minutes out of every hour, not just during times of personal prayer or public meetings.

“Though it tarries, wait for it…” (Habakkuk 2:3). We cannot bring the vision to fulfillment through our own efforts, but must live under its inspiration until it fulfills itself. We try to be so practical that we forget the vision.

At the very beginning we saw the vision but did not wait for it. We rushed off to do our practical work, and once the vision was fulfilled we could no longer even see it. Waiting for a vision that “tarries” is the true test of our faithfulness to God. It is at the risk of our own soul’s welfare that we get caught up in practical busy-work, only to miss the fulfillment of the vision.

Watch for the storms of God. The only way God plants His saints is through the whirlwind of His storms. Will you be proven to be an empty pod with no seed inside? That will depend on whether or not you are actually living in the light of the vision you have seen. Let God send you out through His storm, and don’t go until He does. If you select your own spot to be planted, you will prove yourself to be an unproductive, empty pod. However, if you allow God to plant you, you will “bear much fruit” (John 15:8).

It is essential that we live and “walk in the light” of God’s vision for us (1 John 1:7).

ery proudly speaking, the Nagas were independent people, honest, truthful, patriotic, righteous, straight forward, simple, colorful, cheerful, humorous, courteous, disciplined, industrious and hospitable people. Our culture stands clearly defined from that of most of the neighboring areas. The Nagas as a whole exhibit a general similarity of culture and many ideas, habits and occupation in common. Honesty and bravery was an ideal for every Naga in the past.They never used locks to lock away their houses. Dignity of labor was their pride. Our forefathers used to earn their livelihood by the sweat of their brow and there was no class distinction in Naga society in the past. Our forefathers according to their traditional laws settled all disputes justly and maintained their own identity. There were strict social norms under which they lived.

Intoxicating substances like drugs and alcohol were unknown to our forefathers. The Nagas were good administrators and lived under a system of pure democracy. Our forefathers were capable of managing their affairs from time immemorial.

Nagas were peace loving people; “Peace and Unity” was the policy of our forefathers. They had no written document of codes, regulations and procedures, but our traditions guided them in all their affairs. The heroes of the past and their daring feats have left blazing trials behind, lighting up our path.

Today, the Rusted nails are poisoning and nailing the fate of the Nagas, and it’s unfortunate that our future looks very bleak in dull. The younger generation must seriously take this to heart. Today, the Naga society is slowly decaying, deteriorating and it is obvious in the lives, morals and conducts of the people.

The introduction of Christianity contributed a lot to the growth in literacy and stoppage of headhunting.

It did usher in the light of civilization into the land. Although there are numerous positive values that has benefited the people and the society, Westernization had many adverse effects and repercussions towards the social and cultural fabric of the Naga society. After nearly a century and score years later, the present generation has come to a stage where our culture has been totally relegated to the background. For instance, folk songs and dances, which were once an indispensable virtue accompanied with all the Naga feats and festivals has been utterly neglected, even forgotten in the wake of the popular Korean or western music and dances.

We are dominated by cultures of the other people which were quite alien to us. The rich cultural heritage and traditions of our forefathers are slowly disappearing.

If we look at our society today, there is little or no place at all for use of our customary laws. Hence, we are struggling for self-identity.

We are in the muddle of cultures in which, sadly, our own has become insignificant and meaningless. These

social norms are gradually breaking down resulting in the crumbling of our social support systems. For instance, promiscuity, which once was unheard of in the Naga society, has almost become a way of life among the younger Naga generation, especially in urban areas.

Nagas are poor, not because we have no land or resources. We have sufficient resources to be selfdependent and self-reliant. We have the ability to exploit and utilize them.

But we do not want to work, not because we are lazy, but because the right kind of education has been denied us, today everyone wants to live on easy money and by unfair means.

We should learn to struggle to stand on our own feet, “If our forefathers could, then we can.”

The advent of modern civilization and western education has dislocated all our rich cultural traditions and values. Education and economic status have brought class system in the social life of the Nagas. We have created a society where the rich are becoming richer and the poor are becoming poorer by the day. Today, even justice has vanished, money and power plays a more important role in every aspect of our society where any decision has to be made.

Favoritism and nepotism are found everywhere. There was a time when all competitive matters were purely based on merits. Today, Interviews for post-vacancies are only face-saving processes, public quotas have been misused, only respectable persons and those in powerget government favors and enjoy all kinds of facilities and provisions whereas the poor general people suffer.The ugly head of injustice is clearly visible everywhere.

The fact that even our mother tongue, which is the only foundation of our identity, is slowly losing its importance and its domination by other languages like the Nagamese and English, is also very serious. If we are to identify ourselves as one distinct People and Nation, we have to preserve our mother tongue.

“Bloodshed and violence” is found everywhere. Our problems are getting worse and Nagas are becoming more restless, disunited and quarrelsome.

We have interpreted our faith in Jesus in terms of culture. Our leaders declared “Nagaland for Christ” as our motto. Today, we see corruption everywhere, even the Churches are corrupted.

To d ay, t o m e n t i o n f e w, ‘TheRusted Nails’ can be: 1. ‘the people who wants to barter our rights, our rich cultural and traditional values which our forefathers handed our generation for money, status, power and recognition’, 2. ‘the alien influences in our culture’ or ‘the tendency to copy or imitate other foreign laws forgetting one’s identity, unique heritage’, 3. ‘the people who are propagating negative images of our people to the outside world’,

4. ‘the people who are always ‘it’s okay attitude’ with whatever it comes’ 5. ‘the people who are always opportunistic to politicize anything and everything for their advantage’ even up to the point that ‘the total number of Naga tribes is a complex issue’ now.

Everyone is equally responsible for the choices we make today, every Naga is an author in sealing our fate, our destiny. Thousand voices were left unheard by the government, then can a single voice in the parliament be acknowledged and listen to? I doubt it.Again the model of ‘The Camel and The Desert’ comes up which somehow seems to give a clearer picture of our present society.

As a Naga, we must try to preserve and rediscover the valuable heritage gifted to us by our forefathers. No one can take from us what is rightfully belonging to us without our compromises. Unless we change our society, our mentality, moral, attitude, education and faith, we cannot reform our corrupted society and save our land.

Every race in the world preserves their distinct cultural heritage that is God-given. We cannot be what we are not- no matter how educated, what we become, where we are or how hard we may try. No one can afford to forget their cultural past.

Today, our society desperately needs a revival or renaissance of culture, if we want to be somebody. The challenging need of the hour is that every Naga man and woman needs to be equally taught the very root of our foundation, our unique identity, teach to embrace our priceless traditional and customary laws, distinctive roles of man and woman in our society.

The threat to our society now is that, the very foundation of our identity is broken and shaken, it is diluted and sowe are easily succumbing to other alien laws and cultures.

As we focus on tomorrow, the hope lies not by clinging solely to the past, or in trying to revive the past or by blindly growing with the world but in growing with our feet firmly attached to the foundations of our identity, with the ability to select the admirable values our forefathers professed, re-interpret the past, select and bring out the ideal aspects of it and apply them to the present blending them into the positive values.

Nehru was never tired of emphasizing that the struggle for a new ethos requires not cultural imitation but cultural creativity.

Tomorrow, the scientific, economic, political or social developments will have many impacts which will lead us forward. But one should always remember that ‘someone without a distinct culture of their own will lose themselves in the crowd’. True patriotism requires love for our culture. One should feel proud of his/her cultural heritage; it is our duty to know ourselves and to determine our destiny.

Yes, a grave threat is shrouding the Naga atmosphere quietly but quickly in the form of drastic massive unemployment. The approximately three hundred thousands of qualified Naga youths (including those who work on minute pay scale workplace) who are unemployed and the thousands of freshly graduates who are dumped into the sea of unemployment each year is a note to be taken seriously. The another two hundred thousand Nagas who are not academically qualified has no hope for their future because we lack practical skills and the opportunity for menial and private jobs as even fellow Nagas hire only non locals for masonry, plumbing, construction, office peons, store manager etc. Considering our approximately two million population, this staggering data itself is beaming the red signal.

If this unemployment crisis is not checked and tackled with strategic measures ASAP then the already stagnant economy would totally collapse in the next five to ten years and Nagaland would suffer more than or like Germany after the First World War at which point it will be very difficult for our people to survive let alone recover from it. Famine and contagious diseases will spread like wild fire due to malnutrition. The rich of course would survive by buying their ticket out of Nagaland but the general public who have been robbed off their development funds by the so called govt. servants (lords) would suffer immensely when the clocks strikes and the truth that “Nagaland is a failed State” shows up from behind the curtain.

During the crucial point of no return times, the few thousands or lacks of rupees, once in five years which the politician pays to the people to buy votes will not be able to save anyone. Nor will the bureaucrats who donates hefty in churches and enjoys respectable status in their neighborhoods while looting the public in the office, let anyone enter their 7 foot walled palace.

The responsibility and ‘duty’ of the government authorities is to check every tiny loop hole in our system which could prove lethal for the society and come up with ways to dispense any kind of threat but in Nagaland the govt. authorities just like Freon and CFC depleting the ozone layer and letting the harmful UV rays enter the earth’s atmosphere, has created many big and bigger loop holes to such extent that aside from economic crisis, our national security itself is extremely vulnerable and could be penetrated easily by any means of threat in any form and every educated Naga is aware of that but still we remain to keep quite because the young have been told to listen and follow their elders or speak only after the elders, as it is in our customary tradition.

The young Nagas in no way means to disrespect the elder generations in any manner. If at times the attitude of the young Nagas appear to have been ‘impatient’ or reckless, it is only because times have changed and with it the emotional and mental capacity and personality of the people in the ‘Human Condition’. In our traditional customs maybe the young people were only meant to do what they were expected by the elders or speak only after the elders but in this global world and the 21st century, the young Nagas have expanded their human behavior and psychology to that of the civilized western countries which is progress in itself, without the aid of the govt.

We respect today not just our elders, we respect the ‘human rights’ of every age group and we also respect the rights of minorities like the LGBT community because we believe that everyone has the right to be who they truly are instead of being what people expects us to be. The young Nagas are tolerant and doesn’t judge people because of their sex, skin, religion, race, sexual orientations etc.

We may have left out the age old tradition of doing what we have been told by our elders only because education has provided us with refined ideals like liberty, humanity, human rights, equality and civil rights. What world would it be without individual liberty and freedom of speech and expression, our freedom to be who we truly are? And although the old Naga customs about the young being silent may have been fairly good for our society but today with the liberal voice of the intellectual young Nagas, our society could reach the heights of the western giants because we grew up in an era where we were taught to dream bigger and shoot for the stars.

Doesn’t every Naga be it young or old want a civilized advanced Nagaland?

Now, isn’t the truth worth more than silence?

The Naga fight for gender equality: Is it well justified?

he recent gender episode in our society is a shocking development not only for the locals but also the outsiders who once praised the status of women in Naga society.

In this huge world, Nagas are seen an indigenous community that strongly live on customary system which has kept them for centuries; these customary practices are derived from the customs, mores, norms, praxis and way of life which are formulated based on the experiences in the environs of their day-today life.

Nagas have accepted that their society is a patriarchal one wherein women are not as privileged as men if we see through the lens of modern world. True! However, Naga system also, to be fair, needs to be seen how it has evolved over time and how the status of women is seen today comparing with the past. Further, Naga system needs to be appreciated for adapting to many new things after English education got root among the Nagas, brought by the American Baptist missionaries since 1850s.

While we fight for women’s rights in the Naga context, it is important to look at

the foundation - the original Naga Customary System and where it has reached today. It also needs to produce a careful comparison. For instance, comparing Naga women with the women of mainland seems so much unfair (there are a lot of examples to bring out on it). If one looks at the original system (like those famous anthropologists, FürerHaimendorf, Hutton, Mills in early 20th century, to name a few), it shows that Naga women enjoy more freedom/ privilege than the ones in the mainland. Whether or not, it is an undeniable fact that the original system itself had several rooms for women more than those of the so-called modern nation states. But this is not an attempt to limit the rights and privileges for women in our society. I am fully convinced that Naga women must be as equal as Naga men though not to be measured in terms of physical strength. The gender equality in our context also needs to be expressed or understood in terms of recognizing each role as equal and important as the other, not downgrading each other. No one should be barred from participating in any process or part for being any type of gender, and I think, this has already been

seen as part of the evolution of Naga customary system.

As for me, it demands a careful analysis on the recent move for 33% Women Reservation in ULB polls so that we can have a clear understanding on the situation and the layers involved.

For some, 33% reservation is a prerogative to Gender Equality. But for some, it has become so much disputed and contested in several ways or seen a political decoy by the Center. To be fair, I think that each event/move needs to be interpreted based on the context and it differs from each other one way or the other way. The struggle for gender equality is part of human rights and furthermore gender issue is a global phenomenon, not just exclusive to Nagas alone, who, by this I mean to say, do not deserve all the blames and ungrounded allegations. Because, Naga context is unique in its own way and Nagas deserve to be understood based on their context. For instance, Nagas are allergic to any imposition from the Government of India. History has proved it and it still remains doubtful on the things that the Govt. of India does on them either good or bad. While the relationship still remains fragile between

the Government of India and Naga people, the term “imposition” has become like a bowl of salt to the already serious wound that is trying to recover. However, I do not mean to reject the struggle for women’s right or gender equality. My sincere point is any movement or struggle sans a proper political economy will only worsen the situation. One sincere question I have is: “Can we not create such a reform within our system without being imposed? If I were to analyze the recent episode, I see there are at least four forces with each interest for its own. One: people who genuinely want to fight for Women’s Right. Two: people (the external) who try to rob the political right of the Nagas in the pretext of 33% Women Reservation. Three: people (popular politicians) who try to overcome deficit with the package that would come behind 33% reservation.

Four: people who think this is a wolf in sheep’s clothes so they tried heaven and earth to stop 33% Women Reservation in ULB polls. Those that seriously plus genuinely fought for Women’s Rights failed to see the tricks and decoy set by Two and Three, and how WR was abused,

instead of promoting, is a sad turn in our history! Three innocent lives were lost, several government establishments burned down and the Chief Minister resigned. What do we actually gain in terms of Women’s Rights? Have we not abused the Women’s Rights while fighting for it?

Meanwhile, the Land of Nagas once known as one of the safest abodes for women

in this part of the world has been reintroduced to the outside world in this postmodern era as the Land of misogynists and thus Naga men are a piece of dirt, abused beyond recognition. They went on to picture our women too vulnerable and underprivileged.

But are we truly like they way they describe us?

Teachers in the state have started their rightful agitation in demand for their pending salary. It is ironical that we neglect those who serve in the nation building.

Our children are nurtured and moulded by the teachers, who take care of their overall growth as if they were tending to a garden. It is true that there may be some errant teachers but on the whole, Nagaland has got very good teachers who are committed in their profession.

If such people are unpaid for months on end, it would naturally make them run out of patience. For the sake of our future generation, it is imperative that government clears all pending dues not only to teachers but other work charge employees as well. Promises made must be fulfilled to the hilt.

NEW DELHI, MAR 11 (AGENCIES): “Timely delivery of justice is a part of human rights,” the Supreme Court on Friday said and fixed deadlines for deciding long-pending criminal cases in high courts and trial courts across the country.

Issuing a slew of directions to all high courts, a bench of Justices Adarsh Kumar Goel and U U Lalit said, “Denial of speedy justice is a threat to public confidence in the administration of justice” and the fundamental right to speedy trial “cannot be denied even on the plea of non-availability of financial resources”.

It asked the high courts to issue directions to subordinate courts to decide bail pleas “normally within one

week”, besides asking magistrates to conclude trial in petty offences, where undertrials are in jails, within six months. The sessions courts will have to conclude trials in serious offences within two years, if the accused are in jail, the apex court said, adding strict adherence to the timeline be ensured by making it a part of Annual Confidential Reports of judicial officers.

“Efforts be made to dispose of all cases which are five years old by the end of the year,” it said, adding “if an undertrial has completed period of custody in excess of the sentence likely to be awarded if conviction is recorded, such undertrial must be released on personal bond.

New Delhi, MAR 11 (AGENCIES): India on Saturday successfully tested an extended range BrahMos supersonic cruise missile whose reach has been increased from 290 km to 400 km, from a test range along the Odisha coast.

The cruise missile was test fired from a mobile launcher from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur near Balasore at about 11.30 am, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) officials said.

The missile is capable of carrying a warhead of 300 kg. “The land-attack version of the supersonic cruise missile system met its mission parameters in a copybook manner…executed with high precision from the mobile autonomous launcher deployed in full configuration,” a BrahMos Aerospace spokesperson said. The missile is an IndoRussian joint venture.

Increasing the missile’s range became possible after India’s induction into the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) last June. The configuration of the existing missile has been tweaked to enhance its range. “With the successful test firing of the missile, the Indian armed forces will be empowered to knock down

((PTI): Breaking its 5-day fall, gold today rode on a wave of local buying activity as it rose Rs 200 to Rs 29,050 per 10 grams, aided by a firm global trend.

Silver edged up on uptick in demand from industrial units and coin makers. Traders attributed the rebound in gold prices to a firm trend overseas and increased buying by local jewellers at the domestic spot market. Globally, gold firmed up 0.31 per cent to $ 1,204.50 an ounce and silver 0.44 per cent to $17.02 an ounce in New York yesterday. In the national capital, gold of 99.9 per cent and 99.5 per cent purity recovered by Rs 200 each to Rs 29,050 and Rs 28,900 per 10 grams, respectively. The metal had lost Rs 1,250 in the previous five days.

NEW DELHI, MAR 11 (IANS): Some airlines have come up with special fares on the occasion of Holi for domestic travel over an extended period.

Budget passenger carrier IndiGo has announced discounted fares starting as low as Rs 899 on various domestic routes across its operating sector. “Book tickets till 15 March 2017, for travel till 19 September 2017,” the airline said in a tweet. Similarly, full-service airline Vistara launched its ‘Holi sale’, with one-way fares starting at Rs 999 (inclusive of taxes and fees).

“Bookings under the sale are open from March 10, 2017 to the midnight of March 15, 2017 for travel between March 30, 2017 and October 1, 2017,” said the airline, which is a joint venture of Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines.

NEW DELHI, MAR 11 (AGENCIES): Finance Minister Arun Jaitley discussed options on the resolution of bad loans with Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Urjit Patel and other top officials in the Finance Ministry but the creation of a ‘bad bank’ to hold such loans did not seem to be on the top of alternatives.

Jaitley had called the meeting to deliberate on options to resolve the problem of stressed assets in the banking sector.

SEOUL, MAR 11 (AGENCIES): South Korea’s ousted leader Park Geun-Hye was holed up in the presidential Blue House Saturday as protesters took to Seoul’s streets demanding her arrest, a day after a court upheld her impeachment.

The ex-president has made no comment since she was forced from office Friday when the country’s Constitutional Court unanimously upheld parliament’s decision to impeach her over a corruption scandal. Thousands of riot police were deployed as some 50,000 anti-Park protesters took to the streets to celebrate the verdict, chanting: “The people have won! Arrest Park!”

Some 20,000 angry pro-Park flag-waving protesters rallied near the City Hall, demanding a review of the one-off decision.

Police set up barricades to keep the rival protests apart.

A third person died Saturday in hospital after he lost consciousness the day before in a clash between proPark supporters and riot police, near the Constitutional Court which confirmed her impeachment.

News reports said Park was watching television alone in her private presidential room Friday when the country’s highest court announced her dismissal live on air.

An incredulous Park immediately phoned her aides to confirm the verdict, the Chosun Ilbo daily said. Her aides told the newspaper she had no immediate plans to issue a statement on the court decision or her future course of action.

“The president was apparently stunned at the ruling. She looked dejected,” an unidentified aide was quoted as saying.

She has already been named a criminal suspect, accused of bribery for offering policy favours to firms that benefited Choi.

For months she has refused to make herself available for questioning by prosecutors probing the scandal. But that may no longer be an option once she leaves the Blue House, when she could face formal arrest if she refuses a summons.

Xi wants ‘Great Wall of Steel’ in Xinjiang

BEIJING, MAR 11 (IANS): Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged the construction of a “Great Wall of Steel” to safeguard national unity, ethnic solidarity and social stability in the violence-hit Xinjiang region. Xi made the remarks on Friday during a panel discussion with lawmakers from Xinjiang at the ongoing annual session of the National People’s Congress (NPC), Xinhua news agency reported.

Xi called for safeguarding ethnic unity, and reinforcing solidarity between the military and government, soldiers and civilians, police and the public. “Xinjiang is an important security barrier in northwest China which holds a special strategic position and faces special issues,” Xi said, adding that governing the region well is of great significance.

He stressed that maintaining stability in the landlocked border region, which has a history of ethnic violence and terror attacks, is a political responsibility.

“Stability-related issues must be handled in a thorough, timely and proper manner,” the President added. Xi’s comments follow a series of massive “anti-terror” rallies in Xinjiang, which is home to the Turkicspeaking and largely Muslim Uighur minority as well as a growing number of Han Chinese immigrants, the Guardian reported.

“The members of the Security Council welcomed the conclusion of a further round of United Nations-facilitated intra-Syrian negotiations in Geneva on 3 March 2017,” Xinhua quoted the UN body as saying.

“The members of the Security Council looked forward to the early resumption of the intra-Syrian negotiations and encouraged the Syrian parties to return to talks in good faith and to engage constructively and without preconditions on the agenda set out by the UN special envoy when talks resume,” the statement said.

After briefing the Security Council, De Mistura told reporters here that a new round of Syrian peace talks is set to take place on March 23 in Geneva.

Donald Trump’s revised travel ban order gets first legal blow WASHINGTON, MAR 11 (AGENCIES): President Donald Trump’s revamped travel ban is facing its first major legal setback, after a federal judge halted enforcement of the directive that would deny US entry to the wife and child of a Syrian refugee already granted asylum. In a preliminary restraining order issued Friday that applies only to the Syrian man and his family, US District Judge William Conley in Wisconsin said the plaintiff “is at great risk of suffering irreparable harm” if the directive is carried out.

The man chose to remain anonymous because his wife and child are still living in war-wracked Aleppo. The order marked the first ruling against the revised directive, which temporarily closes US borders to all refugees and citizens from six mainlyMuslim countries.

It denies US entry to all refugees for 120 days and halts for 90 days the granting of visas to nationals from Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Yemen and Sudan.

The new order, unveiled Monday, is due to go into effect March 16. Lifting an indefinite Syrian refugee travel ban and reducing the number of blacklisted countries by removing Iraq, it replaces a previous iteration issued in January that was blocked in federal court.

“The court appreciates that there may be important

differences between the original executive order and the revised executive order issued on March 6, 2017,” Conley wrote.

“As the order applies to the plaintiff here, however, the court finds his claims have at least some chance of prevailing for the reasons articulated by other courts.” He set a hearing for March 21.

New coat of paint

In another legal challenge, the American Civil Liberties Union filed a complaint on behalf of several refugee assistance groups over the controversial executive order.

“Putting a new coat of paint on the Muslim ban doesn’t solve its fundamental problem, which is that the Constitution and our laws prohibit religious discrimination,” said Omar Jadwat, director of the ACLU’s immigrant rights project. “The further President Trump goes down this path, the clearer it is that he is violating that basic rule.”

The ACLU, the preeminent US civil liberties group, and the National Immig ration Law Center brought the suit on behalf of the International Refugee Assistance Project and the refugee resettlement group HIAS, as well as several individuals.

The suit alleges that the new executive order violates

the constitutional protection of freedom of religion in that it is “intended and designed to target and discriminate against Muslims, and it does just that in operation.”

“Rarely in American history has governmental intent to discriminate against a particular faith and its adherents been so plain,” the complaint says, alleging the new order will cause “irreparable harm” and asking for an injunction.

A federal judge in Maryland, Theodore Chuang, has scheduled a hearing in the case for March 15 -- the day before the measure is due to take effect.

Still a Muslim ban

Separately, a federal judge in Seattle who issued a nationwide halt to Trump’s original travel restrictions denied a motion to have the same ruling apply to the modified measures, saying at least one of the parties must first file additional court papers. The state of Maryland said it would join Monday the suit filed by the attorney general from Washington state, which also has the support of Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York and Oregon.

“President Trump’s second executive order is still a Muslim ban,” Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh said in a statement.

For the first time in the history of Wokha and Longsa Village and its subordinate bodies, a meeting cum picnic was held at Hammock Resort, Wokha on the 11th of March 2017.

Acknowledging the age old ancestral relationship of the two villages, the meeting was conducted in two sessions where Mrs. Arhoni Erui; President Wokha village Eloe Hoho chaired the first session. The invocation prayer was pronounced by Mr. Phyochamo Ezung GB Longsa Village council.

Short speeches were also delivered by Mr. Yanphamo Tungoe and Mr. Zayio Ezung, both Chairman of the two village councils on the common note that the ‘relation of the two villages should be maintained as it has always been in the past’. The main speaker of the gathering was Mr. Mhomo Tungoe; SDO Civil Wokha Sardar who spoke on ‘the responsibilities of Wokha and Longsa village with regard to developing Wokha town and the concerned villages’. He said “The village council being the sole authority of the village should be aware of the various schemes and provisions that are being granted by the Central Government and also educate the concerned citizens in making proper use of the provisions. He further said “the two villages being the guardians of Wokha town should also be responsible in giving cooperation to the district administration and the concerned authorities in not only developing the town, but also by maintaining peace and tranquility for the betterment of the society. Mr. Hayipemo Ezung; the VDB Secretary of Longsa village pronounced the vote of thanks.

The second session was chaired by the Chairman of Longsa village council with the invocation pronounced by Mr. Mhonthung Erui the Secretary for Wokha village VDB which was followed by group discussion. The session ended with a mass spoken prayer which was followed by the Picnic of the meeting. The meeting was well attended by the leaders of the two villages along with many members.

Silver cup T20 cricket from March 13

KO H I M A , M A R 1 1 : Altogether 22 teams would be competing in the ensuing 8th edition of Silver Cup T20 Cricket Tournament organised by Nepali Baptist Church Kohima Youth Department on the theme “Peace and unity through cricket”. The tournament would be held from March 13-25 at Jakhama Local Ground, Kohima.

The 22 teams include one each from Diphu and Shillong and 20 from Nagaland - two Dimapur, one Wokha and 17 Kohima teams. Chief engineer of Public health Engineering Department, Er Kevisekho Kruse and Nagaland Football Coaches Association President & AFC ‘B’ Licensee Roko Angami would grace the inaugural session as chief guest and guest of honour respectively.

The inaugural match will be played between Lower Bayavü Giants and Silver White. The champions of the tournament would receive cash award of Rs. 80,000 and r unners-up Rs. 40,000, with running trophy, citations and medals.

Losing semi-finalists will get Rs. 5000 each. Individual prizes include player of the tournament – Rs. 5000, best wicket keeper, highest run scorer, highest wicket taker – Rs. 3000 each and emerging player – Rs. 1000.

Juventus beat Milan 2-1 in Serie A

Paulo Dybala converts a penalty to help Juventus to a 2-1 win over Milan.

TURIN, MAR 11 (IANS): Paulo Dybala str uck a penalty at the death as defending champions Juventus overcame AC Milan 2-1 here to move provisionally 11 points clear at the top of the Serie A football league.

Dybala fired to the right of Milan’s teenage sensational goalkeeper Donnarumma in the 90+7th minute after Carlos Bacca (43rd) cancelled out Medhi Benatia’s opener in the 30th minute.

Donnarumma, however, impressed one and all once again by producing a series of saves. The 18year-old was tested from the very beginning. Pjaca, who

got a rare start due to unfit Mandzukic on the left wing, forced Donnarumma to dive right in the fourth minute.

Dybala was also at his very best, dictating the pace of the game at will and his pace also troubled the visitors. The Argentine fed Pjaca but the latter curled inches past the post.

Juventus broke the deadlock in the 30th minute in a counter-attack which saw a Dani Alves’ chip being controlled by Benatia before firing it home.

Milan equalised 13 minutes later as Bacca slid winger Gerard Deulofeu’s clever pass through the legs of Buffon.

Saina, Sindhu lose in All England quarters BIRMINGHAM, MAR 11 (IANS): India’s campaign at the All England Open Badminton Championships came to an end as women’s singles shuttlers P.V. Sindhu and Saina Nehwal suffered defeats in the quarterfinals.

Sixth seed Sindhu could not muster a challenge against Taipei’s top seed Tai Tzu Ying as she lost 14-21, 10-21 in 34 minutes.

Tai looked sharper and her delectable drop shots rattled Sindhu throughout the match. With this win, world No.1 Tai has taken an impressive 6-3 lead in career meetings with 2016 Rio Olympic silver medallist Sindhu.

Eighth seed Saina fought hard but could not avoid a 20-22, 20-22 defeat to South Korean third seed Sung Ji Hyun in 54 minutes.

It was a heartbreaking loss

for Saina who came close but could not pull it off at critical junctures at the Barclaycard Arena. The win was Sung’s only second triumph in eight games against 2012 London Olympic bronze medal winner Saina. Only two Indians Prakash Padukone and current chief coach P. Gopichand -- have managed to win titles at the world’s oldest tournament. While Padukone won in 1980, Gopichand’s feat came in 2001.

Ratchanok Intanon stuns Carolina

Ratchanok Intanon, the former world champion from Thailand who only just won fitness race to be ready for this week’s All England Open, made a startling recovery to defeat Olympic champion Carolina Marin.

Marin slid from within sight of victory to an improbable

22-20, 13-21, 21-18 defeat.

Marin had been 18-11 up in the final game, having landed a variety of heavy smashes, sliced, roundthe-head, and cannonball flat, which looked to be overwhelming the defences of her young rival.

But the Thai then started to take the attacking initiative away from the aggressive Spaniard, landing three good blows herself and suddenly generating some momentum. Surprisingly Marin was unable to wrest it back, and at 18-16 was spoken to by the umpire, apparently for something she said.

By that stage she had begun taking risks to get the elusive last three points, but this resulted in a mid-court jab into the net and a kill into the net, followed by a stunning defeat when she cleared the shuttle long.

Pjaca got another chance but the Croatian hit just wide of the left post.

Donnarumma produced yet more heroics to deny Khedira’s firmly struck effort before getting back to his feet to keep away Higuain’s spectacular scissor kick on the rebound.

The goalkeeper, tipped to take the spot of Buffon in the Italian national team, again dismissed Higuain.

And as the ball moved to the right, Lichtsteiner kept the ball in play and his cross found the hands of De Sciglio from a close range, earning the hosts a penalty.

Dybala was right on the money to give Juventus the win.

Bopanna-Cuevas knocked out in Indian Wells Masters

INDIAN WELLS, MAR 11 (AGENCIES): Rohan Bopanna and Pablo Cuevas yet again failed to click as a team, losing the closelyfought opening round of the ATP Indian Wells Masters to Novak Djokovic and Viktor Troicki, in Indian Wells, on Saturday.

Bopanna and Cuevas lost 6-2, 3-6, 10-7 to the Serbian combination in one hour and six minutes.

The winners logged 55 points, just two more than Bopanna and Cuevas.

Bopanna and his partner from Ur uguay were playing their third tournament together this season and have managed to win just one match at the Australian Open.

The Indian was hoping for better results, specifically at the Grand Slams, after teaming up with singles world number 30 for the 2017 season.

They had lost first round at Apia International in Sydney. Bopanna though has enjoyed good results with other partners. He won title at the seasonopening Chennai Open with compatriot Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and ended runners-up with Poland’s Marcin Matkowski in Dubai last week.
