UNC lifts economic blockade

IMPHAL, MAR 19: In a huge sigh of relief, the United Naga Council (UNC) on Sunday decided to lift the 139-day long economic blockade along the two national highways in Manipur from Sunday midnight. The decision was announced after a marathon tripartite meeting held at the DRDA hall, Senapati between the new BJP-led Manipur government, Government of India and the UNC. As a first step, the new BJP government as assured, was able to achieve its goal by bringing an end to the economic blockade. The

State services bodies temporarily suspends stir DIMAPUR, MAR 19 (NPN): Consequent upon assurance by the cabinet sub-committee that the matter (demand for implementation of 7th ROP) would be taken up in the State Cabinet, the All State Services Associations of Nagaland (ASSA) has temporarily suspended the proposed pen/tool-down strike. The decision to call off the strike arrived at the joint meeting of cabinet sub-committee and office bearers of All State Services Associations on March 19, informed Confederation of All Nagaland State Services Employees’ Association (CANSSEA) president and convenor ASSA Kohima, S. Takatuba Aier in a press statement. However, the association at a separate meeting has urged the government to convey its decision at the earliest. Meanwhile, office bearers of the associations have convened a meeting on March 23, at 4 pm at CANSSEA conference hall. Earlier, State services associations demanding implementation of 7th ROP w.e.f. March 1, 2017 has threatened to launch the stir from March 20.

meeting was chaired by the MHA Joint Secretary (NE), Satyendra Garg. In a joint statement, signed by GoI’s representative, Satyendra Garg; Addl. CS (Home) Dr. J Suresh Babu and commissioner (works) K. Radhakumar Singh of Manipur government and UNC represented by its general secretary, S. Milan, ANSAM president Seth Shatsang and Naga Women’s Union president L.M. Tabitha said: “To create conducive environment for the democratic process of consultation and dialogue, the United Naga Council will lift the economic blockade with effect from tonight.”

It was also agreed upon by Manipur government to “unconditionally release” the UNC leaders and to close all cases related to the economic blockade against Naga leaders and students’ leaders. UNC president Gaidon Kamei and publicity secretary S Stephen were arrested by the state police in connection with violent incidents during the blockade on November 25 last year. Further, Manipur government has also decided to start consultation with all stakeholders to redress the issue. In this regard, the house resolved to hold the next tripartite meeting “within a month time at a

political level.” Since the blockade was launched to oppose the creation of seven new districts out of Naga territory, it was not known whether UNC had accepted the creation of such districts by the previous government and whether UNC would be withdrawing other agitations like banning of national projects in Naga dominated hill, government office picketing etc. Earlier, UNC demanded that the Ibobi-led government revoke the order for creation of the new districts. It may be mentioned that the UNC had imposed the economic blockade to oppose the creation of new districts out of Naga territory. UNC alleged that the previous government had bifurcated the existing districts without their consent. Meanwhile, UNC has appreciated the initiative and new approach of the government of Manipur in coming forward to address the core issue at hand. Prior to the State Assembly elections, there had been at least two rounds of tripartite meetings to bring an end the blockade. However, the meeting was futile.

NTC raises issues confronting state; seeks CM’s action DIMAPUR, MAR 19 (NPN): Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC) has reminded chief minister Dr. Shurhozelie Liezietsu on several issues confronting the state and urged him to initiate positive steps in the interest of the Nagas. This was contained in a memorandum addressed to Dr. Shurhozelie on March 18, 2017. NTC president, Lendinoktang Ao and general secretary Nribemo Ngullie demanded that the State government to revoke its decision on recognition of Rongmei tribe and Nagaland Special Development Zone (NSDZ). It also urged the government to implement Nagaland Land and Revenue (amendment) Act, 1978 in letter and in spirit. On Gaidinliu Memorial Hall at Kohima, NTC affirmed that it would not allow Nagaland to be converted into a launching pad for such “cult leader or alien culture of idol worship”. NTC also urged State government to impress the Government of India to revoke extension of Disturb Area Act in the State. (Full text on p-6)

Gov bats for diverse, secular nation DIMAPUR, MAR 19 (NPN): Nagaland Governor, P.B. Acharya on Sunday called upon every religion irrespective of their belief to unite and make India great and stressed on the need to have a diverse and secular nation, a DIPR report stated. Addressing the public reception organized by the Mech Kachari Hindus of Dimapur at Shri Shri Lakshmi Mandi, Naharbari, Acharya said: “communism demises the existence of God and contradicting to this concept India respects diversity with secularism as uniqueness of India along with freedom to exercise religious practices and views.” In India, he said no one had the right to stop a community from practising their belief and no community holds their respective religion superior over the other. He said there were people who do not believe in the existence of God, known as ‘nastik’ (atheist) and in some countries that follow only one ‘Granth’ (place where all the people follow one religion) such as Saudi Arabia. “But there is one specialty of India-we respect diversity even with multiple languages, diverse

race and culture co-existing in unity as one nation,” he added. Emphasising on parity, Acharya said everyone was all equal and entitled with equal opportunity with “one vote rights”. Given India’s high population of youth as compared to other developed countries, he said the Central government’s primary focus was to empower the next generation with skills. In this regard, he said a state like Nagaland, with around 20 lakh population having over three lakh graduates, could progress if the state focussed on skills. Further, the Governor said “to protect our identity, it is important to preserve our language and culture.” Therefore, Acharya called

upon every community “to expose their children to their respective first language medium school till fifth standard so that the children remain rooted with their culture.” For this, Acharya said his doors were always open to all the communities and at the same time assured to provide “all possible assistance and protection in their times of vulnerability.” Earlier, the program started with an invocation prayer by Prodip Mech. Welcome address was delivered by cultural sectary M.K.P.O Dharmadhaj Sonowal and a vote of thanks by Jyotish Khakhlary. The program also included presentation on the brief history of the Mandir followed and cultural dance.

DIMAPUR, MAR 19 (NPN): Hitting back at NPCC president K. Therie over his claim that NPFBJP rule was a threat to Nagas, the Nagaland BJP unit said that the Congress leader was venting out his desperation after the party “grand” losses across the country and in Northeast. It reminded Therie that his desperate attempt for the party prospects in the next assembly election by singing the wrong tunes about BJP would not make “any dent as an election propaganda”. Instead, BJP unit general secretary (media) and spokesperson Jaangsillung Gonmei in a press statement reminded Congress that its “escapist method” in criticizing BJP by shielding the weakness, nonsecularism, corruption and misrules would not work anymore. Therefore, the party unit asserted that

Therie’s rhetoric was another failed Congress tricks which held no ground. BJP also attacked Congress of portraying itself as secular during elections only to get voters, after which it become “sickular” or non-secular. The BJP unit taunted Congress’ claim of not having political alliance with religions, religious fundamentalist groups and professes to be secular, but takes sides and gets involved with non-secular fundamentalism, when opportunity arises. It was for this reasons, BJP asserted former Congress Prime Ministers Rajiv Gandhi permitted Shilanyas in Ayodhya and Narashima Rao permitted demolition of Babri Masjid. Not only this, BJP said that prominent Congress leaders such as Jagdish Tytler, Sajjan Kumar and H K L Bhagat have been identified

with the violence of 1984. Congress party workers and leaders across religious lines also figured in reports on the Bombay riots of 1992-93, the Gujarat violence of 2002 and Muzaffarnagar violence of 2013. BJP also claimed that incidents of communalism violence recorded highest when Congress led UPA government was in power. Also hitting out at Therie on his claim that Churches would become empty if BJP and NPF were allowed to rule for another five years, the BJP reminded Therie that political parties do not spoil religions, culture, traditions etc. It asserted said that religion was a private matter and only the individual Christian’s inward qualities determine its larger Christian image by conforming to and most importantly, practicing in daily life, it’s tenets. “It was only the hypocrites

who distort and disseminates wrong information to the ignorant masses for illegal gains”, BJP said. Therefore, the party unit asked NPCC president, if he was concerned about “empty Churches” because of black money through BJP government, then he should immediately confessed all the black money during the Congress rules in the country and particularly in Nagaland. On the Naga political issue, BJP reminded Therie that what the Congress government could not do in 50 years was done by BJP in eight years. BJP cited examples of how BJP government under Atal Behari Vajpayee on October 28, 2003 described the “uniqueness” of Naga political struggle and signing of “framework agreement” under Modi’s government on August 3, (Cont’d on p-8) 2015.

DIMAPUR, MAR 19 (NPN): ACAUT, Merangkong Senso Telongjem Dimapur (MSTD), Dimapur Ao Youth front and several other organizations have vehemently condemned the assault on a prominent citizen of Dimapur, Dr. Aotoshi in an incident of road rage, at Purana Bazar, Dimapur on Saturday. ACAUT demanded that the assailant be booked and under all sections of the penal code and punished promptly as per the law, to set an example that law breakers would be held

Guwahati, Mar 19: This year’s assembly elections have been a fascinating story so far. BJP got a clear majority in one state but announced its CM face in three other states before that. While Trivendra Singh Rawat took charge as Uttarakhand Chief Minister, former Defence Minister Manohar Parrikart also won a vote of trust in Goa and now in what could be the final frontier, the party is set to go through a floor test in Manipur on Wednesday morning. The party is leaving no stone unturned to form the government in the state and has lodged all its legislators in a Guwahati hotel along with an Independent and a Trinamool Congress lawmaker since Thursday. The Congress has sheltered its 27 MLAs in the house of one of its legislators in Imphal. Guwahati has been the refuge for BJP legislators of Arunachal Pradesh earlier too. It is the home of Assam BJP finance minister Himanta Biswa

Sharma, convenor of North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA). BJP legislator Thokchom Radheshyam, was certain that the BJP chief minister N. Biren Singh will win the vote trust on Monday. The entire BJP legislators and those supporting it will be up against 27 Congress members (after one Congress member defected to BJP). However, political grapevine in Manipur suggests that the BJP-led coalition government will sail through and there could be cross voting from the Congress legislators. Rather than any possibility of Congress poaching on BJP and other allies, the most likely possibility is of more Congress legislators defecting to BJP to be in power and then resigning from the house to contest as on BJP tickets. The BJP claims to have the support of 33 legislators with the support of the NPP, NPF, LJP, an independent legislator, the lone Trinamool Congress MLA and a defector from the Congress Shyam Kumar - who took oath as a minister in the N Biren Singh government.
