Options available if MCM land issue not resolved: Rio Correspondent

KOHIMA, MAR 3 (NPN): A day after Chi Village Council withdrew the No Objection Certificate (NOC) for the proposed Medical College Mon (MCM) site at Chi Ponghoa in Mon district, chief minister Neiphiu Rio said that there were other options if the land issue cannot be resolved. Addressing media persons after taking the first dose of Covid vaccine at Naga Hospital Authority Kohima, the chief minister said that he was in touch with Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation, Konyak Union and legislators from Mon district on the issue and hoped that this would be resolved. Asserting that Mon town has good gradient, Rio however remarked that if the differences could not be resolved over the present

location, then there were “many more alternatives” and therefore there should not be any problem. Though the land belonged to an individual, Rio, however said that the area was traditionally under Chi village. Deputy Commissioner Mon, Thavaseelan K on Tuesday informed Nagaland Post that the district administration was well aware of the issue. He said the district authorities along with Health department was working to resolve the issue. It may be mentioned that the Union Health minister, Dr. Harsh Vardhan laid the foundation stone of the much-awaited Mon Medical College in Mon district headquarters at a glittering function held on February 26. Dr. Vardhan had also categorically affirmed that he would personally moni-

tor and stay in touch with state government to ensure timely completion of the medical colleges in Kohima and Mon. In a joint statement on Tuesday, the Chi Village Council cited the State government’s failure to honour its commitment to CVC during the laying of the

medical college’s foundation stone on February 26 at Mon district hospital. They pointed out that CVC had to cooperate with the government and issued NOC with pre-condition, which the government had also agreed, but accused it of subsequently backtracking on them.

‘People should speak their mind at consultative meet on reservation’

With the crucial consultative meet scheduled on March 5 over reviewing the reservation policy, Rio exuded confidence that stakeholders would come forward and speak their mind. The cabinet sub-committee along with the chief secretary and the Home department would be holding a consultative meeting with all stakeholders. Claiming that the State practised a vibrant democracy by conducting consultations, he said people must understand the concept of consultative meetings. “We have to go by the system and we practice a refined democracy and do a lot of consultation before implementing a policy so as to make people understand the change,” he said. Rio was hopeful that the stakeholders will attend the meeting and speak out their mind.

New Delhi, Mar 3 (PTI): Centre has room to cut excise duty on petrol and diesel by up to Rs 8.5 per litre without impacting its target for revenue from the tax on the two fuels, analysts said. Petrol and diesel prices hover at a historic high following a relentless increase in rates over the past nine months. There have been calls by opposition parties as well as sections of society to the government to reduce excise duty to ease consumer pain. “We estimate excise duty on auto fuels in FY22 (April 2021 to March 2022),

if it is not cut, at Rs 4.35 lakh crore versus budget estimate of Rs 3.2 lakh crore. “Thus, even if excise duty is cut by Rs 8.5 per litre on or before April 1, 2021, FY22E budget estimate can be met,” ICICI Securities said in a note. It expressed optimism for an excise duty cut given demand recovery, impending privatisation and inflation concerns but expected it to be more modest than Rs 8.5 a litre. Despite oil prices recovering, the government has not yet restored the taxes to their original levels.

Covaxin 81pc efficient in trials: Bharat Biotech NEW DELHI, MAR 3 (PTI): Bharat Biotech’s vaccine, whose emergency use approval before finishing final stage testing had triggered a row, has shown an 81 per cent efficacy in preventing symptomatic COVID-19 in an interim analysis of the advanced clinical trial, the company said on Wednesday, boosting prospects of its usage. Covaxin, which was shunned by some health workers due to lack of final trial data, showed efficacy better than the company’s

previous guidance of around 60 per cent. In a statement, Bharat Biotech Chairman Krishna Ella said Covaxin has “demonstrated high clinical efficacy” as also shown “significant immunogenicity” against rapidly emerging variants. In a separate video address, he added that “many people criticized us”. The results come as a shot in the arm for India’s immunisation drive against coronavirus. The drug regulator in January had allowed Covaxin as well as the vac-

cine made by AstraZeneca’s local partner, the Serum Institute of India Ltd. But the lack of final trial data inhibited the use of Covaxin, which made up for only about 11 per cent of the more than 1 crore vaccines administered till last week. The findings cement Bharat Biotech’s claims of India’s first successful home-made COVID-19 vaccine being safe while also brightening prospects for sales overseas. The Hyderabad-based firm said it already has at-

tracted interest from more than 40 countries. The second phase of vaccination opened this week with Prime Minister Narendra Modi taking a shot of Covaxin. Bharat Biotech said the efficacy data was based on tests on 25,800 subjects, the largest ever conducted in India. The Phase 3 study enrolled participants between 18-98 years of age, including 2,433 over the age of 60 and 4,500 with comorbidities, it added.

Myanmar security forces kill at least 33 protesters: Reports YANGON (MYANMAR), MAR 3 (AP): Myanmar security forces dramatically escalated their crackdown on protests against last month’s coup, killing at least 33 protesters Wednesday in several cities, according to accounts on social media and local news reports compiled by a data analyst. That is highest daily death toll since the February 1 takeover, exceeding the 18 that the UN Human Rights Office said were killed on Sunday, and could galvanize the international community, which has responded fitfully thus far to the violence. Videos from Wednesday also showed security forces firing slingshots at demonstrators, chasing them down and even brutally beating an ambulance crew. The toll could even be higher; the Democratic Voice of Burma, an independent television and online news service, tallied 38 deaths.

Demonstrators have regularly flooded the streets of cities across the country since the military seized power and ousted the elected government of leader Aung San Suu Kyi. Their numbers have remained high even as security forces have repeatedly fired tear gas, rubber bullets and live rounds to disperse the crowds, and arrested protesters en masse. The Wednesday death toll was compiled by a data

‘Indo-Naga’ political talk progressing: NSCN (I-M) DIMAPUR, MAR 3 (NPN): Asserting that Nagaland governor RN Ravi’s recent “reckless statement” in Nagaland Assembly that the “Indo-Naga” political talks have concluded created “unnecessary confusion”, the NSCN (I-M) Wednesday said that talk was progressing, adding “Indo-Naga political talk teams are back on the table”. NSCN (I-M) through its MIP stated that the “historic Framework Agreement (FA) signed on the 3rd August, 2015 is being brought back to live in order to remove any misinterpretation and thereby hasten the signing of Naga solution agreement.” Maintaining that Ravi’s “statements and conclusions” reflected his role as Nagaland governor and not as interlocutor, the NSCN (I-M) said “It is a matter of regret that his role as interlocutor is nothing less than disparaging and dismal.” According to NSCN (I-M), the status of the “Indo-Naga” political talks that came up in the last parliamentary session was confirmed by the Union Government that the talk was at an advanced stage. “No doubt, this is the ground reality of the In-

do-Naga political talk and NSCN talk team is leaving no stone unturned to safeguard the political identity of the Naga people,” it stated. Further, NSCN (I-M) termed as “very unfortunate” Ravi making “such a misleading statement before the whole nation by blatantly contradicting the GoI and the Indian Parliament besides the 136 crores Indians and the world community in the matter of such sensitive Indo-Naga political negotiations going on for more than two decades.” In the matter of Naga political issue, NSCN (I-M) said Ravi should be cautious of every single word he uttered “lest his credibility is damned.” It maintained that the “Indo-Naga” political talk was being handled by both the parties to take the Naga people and the government of India to the point that was honourable and acceptable. “This is the official understanding and the only way to conclude the talk,” NSCN (I-M) said. Therefore, NSCN (I-M) maintained that it would, under no circumstances, fail the Nagas, adding that it would never sign any agreement that was short of the mutual standard as agreed upon.

B.Ed. trainees urge NU to hold online exam DIMAPUR, MAR 3 (NPN): Opposing the Nagaland University (NU)’s decision to conduct offline examination for B.Ed.1st semester and 3rd semester, the B.Ed. trainees of 20192021 and 2020-2022 batch have appealed to the university authority to conduct online examination. In an appeal letter to the controller of examination Nagaland University, the B.Ed. trainees from at least nine colleges stated that when the entire teaching-learning process was conducted online, the decision to conduct offline exam was “unfair”. They said that the sudden decision to switch from online learning to offline examination “seems rather impractical.” B.Ed. trainees stated that colleges were not fully prepared to conduct offline examinations with proper safety protocols and equipment. They also said that there was fear of breaking the guidelines for maintaining SOPs in educational institutions. Further, they stated that students would not be able to adapt to the sudden shift from online to offline as they were not physically and mentally prepared.

ers” to work unitedly in the April 6 elections and prevent “common enemy”, DMK, identified as “evil force” by the late chief minister, from coming to power. After being released from a Bengaluru prison following completion of a four-year term in an assets case, Sasikala had last month announced her intention to engage in active politics. Her subsequent political moves, including the stand of AMMK floated by her nephew TTV Dhinakaran, in the polls was keenly awaited by observers and political parties alike. K Y M C

Assam BJP in a fix as oppn play anti-CAA card BJP, AGP to finalise seat sharing

GUWAHATI, MAR 3 (AGENCIES): Hectic canvassing by political parties is on in 47 assembly constituencies in Upper Assam and North Assam which go to polls on March 27 in the first phase of Assam Assembly Election 2021. Districts in Upper Assam had witnessed widespread protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in the winter of 2019-20. The opposition parties are looking to turn the emotive citizenship issue into a major poll plank, much to the discomfort of the ruling BJP. At a rally in Tezpur on Tuesday, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra launched a scathing attack on BJP and promised voters that her party will not implement CAA if voted to power. “Home Minister Amit Shah talks of implementing CAA-NRC in the whole country but doesn’t talk about it when he comes to Assam. The BJP and RSS want to crush the identity

File photo of a demonstrator holding a piece of cloth with 'No CAA' from an anti CAA protest in Nagaon, Assam

of Assam,” Priyanka Gandhi Vadra told the public at the poll rally. The Congress-led grand alliance or the mahajot is pushing hard to fan anti-CAA sentiments to corner the BJP in the campaign. The Congress has also launched a campaign song to remind voters about anti-CAA protests that rocked the state in the winters of 2019-20. The Congress is also banking on the angst among people over the

gigantic Supreme Courtmonitored NRC exercise. Even Assam agitation martyr Baijanti Devi’s family in Tezpur’s Chandmari area has members in the D-voter list with disputed nationality. India Today TV met Tanka Prasad Upadhyay, a distant relative of the family. “BJP had come to power promising to drive out all illegal immigrants; that promise is yet to be fulfilled. The CAA will make all those who have come after

1971 legal citizens while genuine ones will be counted as D-voters,” he said. The anti-CAA agitation was spearheaded by student unions - All Assam Students Union (AASU) and Asom Jatiyabadi Yuba Chitra Parishad (AJYCP) and Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti whose leader Akhil Gogoi has been in prison for over a year now. With support from student unions, the agitation has sprung up a new political entity Asom Jatiya Party which blames both BJP and Congress for the NRC mess. Advocate Jan Bora, secretary of the Asom Jatiya Party told India Today TV, “People of Assam fear a Tripura-like situation where the influx of immigrants continues. The CAA threatens our culture and the Assamese language. Both BJP and Congress are responsible for mishandling the NRC. People will reject both in the coming polls.” For the BJP, Prime Minister Narendra Modi

has addressed three public meetings while Home Minister Amit Shah has addressed four meetings so far this year. But both star campaigners refrained from commenting on CAA and NRC. The BJP’s chief strategist for North East and Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said on record that the NRC data is unacceptable to his government. “We have requested for re-verification, 20 per cent in border districts and 10 per cent in non-border districts. If re-verification will throw large-scale anomaly then the second prayer will be for fresh NRC,” he told reporters in Guwahati. Upper Assam had witnessed large-scale arson and violent protests over the CAA. The new legislation was an insult to injury for Assam residents left out of the NRC published in August 2019 which put citizenship of out close to 19 lakh residents including a sizeable Hindu population under suspicion.

Guwahati, Mar 3 (PTI): Senior leaders of Assam BJP and its alliance partner Asom Gana Parishad(AGP) will hold discussions with the saffron party’s leaders in New Delhi on Wednesday, while Congress leaders are huddled in a resort here to finalise the lists of candidates for the coming three-phase assembly election in the state, sources in the parties said. The state BJP and AGP leaders will hold discussions with BJP President J P Nadda and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on seat sharing arrangements, North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) convenor Himanta Biswa Sarma said. The final list of candidates for the first and maybe even the second and third phases will be announced on Thursday by Nadda, he said. The seat sharing arrangements with BJP’s other partner - the United People’ Party Liberal(UPPL) have been completed without any problems, Sarma added. “We have resolved almost 98 to 99 per cent is-

sues related to seat sharing with AGP over the past several days. There are just a few issues that the BJP national leaders will decide,” he said. Union minister Narendra Singh Tomar and BJP leader Jitendra Singh, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, the NEDA convenor, BJP state unit president Ranjeet Dass, BJP’s Assam in-charge Baijyant Panda were engaged in discussions and had left for New Delhi on Monday afternoon. AGP President Atul Bora, in whose residence several rounds of talks were held, and the BJP leaders again met this morning. “Discussions have moved in a positive direction,” Bora said. Asked whether AGP will contest the same number of seats as in the last state election or more, Bora said that he will not comment on this till the final list is released. AGP has reportedly asked for more seats than the 30 it had contested in the last assembly election, while BJP has sought more than the 89 seats it had contested

in 2016 resulting in the long drawn parleys. The election committee of Assam Congress are also engaged in seat sharing arrangements with its Grand Alliance partners and probable candidates for the polls at a resort here. The party’s first list of candidates is expected to be announced in the next 48 hours, AICC general secretary and Assam in-charge Jitendra Singh said. “We will take into consideration all aspects and analyse issues like prospects of winning or anti-incumbency of sitting MLAs, representation to youths and women,” he said. After the election committee’s decision the ninemember screening committee constituted by the party president will review it before the final list is announced, he said. The Congress is contesting the forthcoming polls as a part of the ‘Mahajoth’ or ‘Grand Alliance’ with the AIUDF, the Bodoland Peoples’ Front, the CPI, CPI(M) and CPI(ML) and the Anchalik Gana Morcha.

REJOINDER

In reference to the Rejoinder published by the Chairman Thurutsuswu Village Council, Shri. Thuyesasho Swuro in the Nagaland Post on 26th January 2021 regarding the 2 lane road damaged compensation received by the Village Council, the Catholic Church at Thurutsuswu and Sekruzu under St. Andrew Parish Thenyizumi is compelled to clarify and refute all baseless and misleading claims staged by the former for public consumption and for the record of concerned authority. The fact of the matter is that the Village Council Thurutsuswu had sold the said land to the Catholic Community at nominal rate with proper sales deed and a clear scheduled map executed by the then Extra Assistant Commissioner Sekruzu circle in the year 1996. Since then, with assistance from Local Area Development Fund (LADF), donors and well- wishers the Catholic School was established. And even during the verification process for 2 lane road construction, the village authority has authenticated the genuineness of Catholic property and listed as rightful beneficiary and appeared as Catholic property in the beneficiary list (as per RTI reply). However, without the consent and approval of the Catholic Church the damage compensation for the said Catholic buildings were fraudulently withdrawn by an unauthorised individual. Coming to learn of this act of misappropriation, the Catholic Church issued a disclaimer in the Nagaland Post on 13th September 2019 as we have never received any damage compensation as is enlisted in the beneficiary list. It is to be taken on record that the rejoinder issued by the Thurutsuswu Village Council Chairman was done without the consent of Village Council Members and against the Village Council resolution adopted during a joint meeting held with members of Thurutsuswu Students’ Union, Parish priest and Assistant Parish priest of St. Andrew Parish Thenyizumi, Parish Pastoral Council secretary on 16th December 2020 at panchayat hall Thurutsuswu. The house verbally agreed that the Village Council would issue a press release stating that it had taken the compensation money meant for Catholic Church and that the Catholic Church didn’t receive a single paise as compensation for its damaged properties. The question left to be answered here is ; when all the authenticated land documents are with Catholic Church, claiming its ownership by Village Council is baseless and bizarre, and illegal. District Administration endorsing an unauthorised person to withdraw the compensation on behalf of the genuine owner of the property tantamount to negligence and questionable exercise of authority. The Village Council should therefore come with legal documents before competent authority as to why they have verified the Catholic properties and authorised someone other than the rightful owner of the property to draw the compensation money. Moreover, the 700x9 meters (approximate) stretch of Catholic land with approach road that has been affected is not even included in the compensation list for the reasons best known to those who had verified the land. We reiterate again that the 2 lane road construction has not damaged any of the Catholic buildings mentioned in the beneficiary list except approach road and vacant plots. Therefore, it amounts to bogus or false claim and the Holy Catholic Church’s name is taken to do it. It is therefore, done maliciously to tarnish Her good name. Therefore, clarified above and hereby prayed that District Land Acquisition Authority, Phek take prompt action to clear off the air of contending confusions created by the perpetrators and legal action be initiated against the defaulters and settle the matter at the earliest. Further, the sanctity and integrity of the Catholic Church may be restored for the glory of GOD and in the eyes of the public. Issued by Mr. Paul Vetsutso on behalf Catholic Church under St. Andrew Parish Thenyizumi and ratified by the parish priest. Mr. PAUL VETSUTSO Secretary, Parish Pastoral Council St. Andrew Parish, Thenyizu. DC-205

Need to overcome language barriers: PM

NEW DELHI, MAR 3 (PTI): Asserting that the new National Education Policy (NEP) encourages the use of local languages, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said work needs to be done on a mission mode to overcome linguistic barriers in the education system so that the talent of those from rural areas and the poor is allowed to flourish. Addressing a webinar on the effective implementation of the provisions in the Union Budget for the education sector, Modi said it is the responsibility of the academics and experts of every language to make available the best content in the country and the world in Indian languages. Limiting knowledge and research is a big injustice to the country’s potential, he said. “With this thinking, the doors of several sectors such as space, atomic energy, DRDO, agriculture, are being opened for our talented youngsters,” the prime

Narendra Modi

minister said. Modi said education, skill, research and innovation were the second biggest focus of the budget after health. “The Union Budget has broadened our efforts to link education with employability and entrepreneurial capability,” he said. As a result of these efforts, he said, India is now among the top three countries in the world in terms of scientific publications, the number of PhD scholars and the start-up ecosystem. Modi said India has joined the top 50 countries in the Global Innovation Index and is continuously improving.

To build a self-reliant India, it is important that youngsters have confidence in themselves, he said, asserting that it comes only when they have complete faith in their education and knowledge. Stressing the importance of local languages in the education system, Modi said experts know that language plays an important role in understanding a subject. Underlining that the new NEP encourages greater use of local languages, he said it is now the responsibility of the academics and experts to make the best content of the country and the world available in Indian languages. This is definitely possible in this era of technology, he added. “From primar y to higher education, we have to ensure that the best content is available to the youngsters of the country in Indian languages,” Modi said. It is necessary to produce content in Indian languages? for every area of

expertise, be it medical, engineering, technology or management, he added. Asserting that there is no dearth of talent in the country, Modi said those living in villages and the poor, who do not know any language other than their local language, have no shortage of talent. “We should not let the talent of our villages, our poor die due to language (difficulties),” he said. Those from the villages and the poor should not be deprived of the country’s development journey, he added. Overcoming the language barrier, there is a need to work on a mission mode to provide opportunities in local languages for talent to flourish, Modi said. The National Language Translation Mission announced in the budget will provide a lot of encouragement for this, he noted. Modi stressed the need to implement all the provisions of the NEP from the pre-nursery to the PhD level

quickly and said the budget will be of immense help in this regard. He also called for better synergy between colleges and universities. The emphasis placed in the budget on skill development, upgradation and apprenticeship is unprecedented, Modi said. He said new opportunities are growing for students and young scientists with a constant focus on higher education, research and innovation. The prime minister said for the first time, the focus is on issues ranging from the Atal Tinkering Laboratories in schools to the Atal Incubation Centres in institutes of higher education. A new tradition of hackathons for startups has been created in the country, which is becoming a huge force for both youngsters and the industry, he said. Modi also informed that through the National Initiative for Developing and Harnessing Innovation, over 3,500 startups are being nurtured.

The BJP high command was not willing to take the risk of dragging on this issue as the party has taken the high moral stand in Maharashtra where the Forest Minister and Shiv Sena leader was forced to resign when his alleged love affair came to light after a TikTok star committed suicide. Besides this, the BJP is gearing up for elections in five states, while in Karnataka too the BJP will have to battle it out in three assembly by-polls and also for a Lok Sabha seat. Also, the month long Budget session will start on March 4. Owing to these issues, the BJP high command met

on Wednesday morning in New Delhi and gave strict instructions to its state unit leaders to ensure that Jarakiholi resigns. His resignation letter has been accepted by Karnataka Chief Minister B. S. Yediyurappa and forwarded to Governor Vajubhai Vala for his approval, even as the minister is repeatedly claiming innocence. “There should be an investigation into this ‘fake CD case’. Even though I am innocent, I am taking moral responsibility and resigning from my post in the cabinet,” Jarakiholi said in his resignation letter in Kannada. Rahul, Priyanka slam Yogi govt over law and order situation in UP

Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra

NEW DELHI, MAR 3 (PTI): Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra hit out at the Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government on Wednesday over the law and order situation in the state. “Under the BJP rule, Uttar Pradesh is becoming worse day by day. Such disorder in law and order spares none -- it is a curse for every community,” Rahaul Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi with the hashtags #Hathras #Bulandshahr. He also tagged a photo of the funeral procession of a 50-year-old man who was allegedly shot dead in Hathras district by a person out on bail in a case of molesting the victim’s daughter. Priyanka Gandhi alleged one family or the other can be heard “screaming for justice” every day in Uttar Pradesh, contrary to Yogi Adityanath government’s “propaganda”. Their attacks on the

BJP dispensation came in the backdrop of the Hathras shooting as well as an incident in Bulandshahr where the body of a 12-year-old girl was exhumed from a pit days after she went missing. “The father of a girl who did not take back a case of molestation was murdered in Hathras. The body of a girl, who had been missing for several days in Bulandshahr, was found buried in a house,” Priyanka said in a tweet in Hindi. “Contrary to the UP government’s false propaganda on crime, every day one family or the other is screaming for justice,” she said. Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and other Congress leaders have been attacking the Adityanath government over law and order situation in the state, alleging that criminal activities were on the rise, a claim denied by the state government.

that an inquiry will be conducted as per the law adding that the Bharatiya Janata Party will take a decision on action against Ramesh Jarkiholi. Ramesh Jarkiholi has been accused of sexually exploiting a woman who first approached the minister with a proposal to make documentaries on dams across Karnataka using drone cameras and special cameras. But, after a couple of meetings with her, the minister allegedly lured her with the offer of a government job at the Karnataka Power Corporation Limited. The allegations have been made by a social activist Dinesh Kalahalli, who released a video, screenshots and a telephonic conversation, as well as audio clips allegedly between the minister and the woman. Kallahalli has filed a complaint against the minister in the Cubbon Park police station. He also made it clear that he was not related to the victim, but was approached by her family as there was an environment of fear.

MUMBAI, MAR 3 (AGENCIES): The Maharashtra government has formed a four-member highlevel committee to conduct a probe into an incident where girls were allegedly stripped and forced to dance by policemen at a hostel in Jalgaon, Home Minister Anil Deshmukh said on Wednesday. The minister made the announcement in the state Assembly after the issue was raised by opposition members. BJP leader Sudhir Mungantiwar targeted the Maharashtra government, suggesting it was not serious over the issue. According to media reports, some girls from a hostel in Jalgaon complained that people from

outside and policemen were allowed to enter the facility on the pretext of a probe and some girls were forced to strip and dance. A video clip of the same has also surfaced. “It is a very unfortunate incident. A four-member high-level committee of officials has been formed to conduct a probe into it... they have been asked to submit a report in two days. Action will be taken as per rules after the report is submitted,” Deshmukh said. Before the minister made the announcement, Mungantiwar said the incident is very serious. He alleged the government was only taking note of such an incident and called for stricter action.

Cong admits 1975 Emergency ‘error’, now BJP’s turn, says MVA MUMBAI, MAR 3 (IANS): Lauding Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s candid admission, that the Emergency imposed 45 years ago was a mistake, the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) jumped to its feet and said “now it’s the turn of the ruling party at the Centre to own up its mistakes”, here on Wednesday. State Congress President Nana Patole, Nationalist Congress Party Spokesperson and Minister Nawab Malik, Shiv Sena leader Kishore Tiwari and Samajwadi Party state President Abu Asim Azmi made nearidentical demands from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after Gandhi’s surprise statement on Tuesday. Patole said that the Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has owned up that the 21-month long Emergency imposed in 1975 was a ‘mistake’. “Now, will Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP also admit that the 2002 Gujarat riots were a blunder and own up their responsibility?” Patole demanded. Malik said that after the Congress’ submission that somehow the Emergency was not the right step, it’s now the turn of the BJP to reciprocate and accept its own mistake of the Gujarat riots. “Earlier, the Congress

When will the BJP similarly admit and apologise for the Gujarat riots,” Malik asked. Welcoming Gandhi’s assertion, Tiwari, accorded a Minister of State status, said that it was a magnanimous gesture on the part of the Congress and its time for BJP to follow suit in a democratic spirit. “Not only should Modi say sorry, he should also make suitable amends towards all the affected people, if necessary, even resign to prove his sincerity The Congress has realized and trying to erase its past errors, the BJP must also do the same to improve its credibility with the masses,” said Tiwari. has become a ‘Bharat Jalao Party’ and it is engaged in blatantly destroying the country on all fronts daily in the past 7 years. “They must categorically apologise for the Gujarat riots, plus the manner in which minorities are being targeted, for the lynchings of Muslims, Dalits and other poor people, for the harassment of ‘love-jihad’ the list is long,” said Azmi. The ruling parties’ reactions came after Gandhi - in conversation with Cornell University’s economic Kaushik Basu - termed the Emergency imposed by the then PM Indira Gandhi, as a ‘mistake’. “I think that (the Emergency) was a mistake. Absolutely, that was a mistake. And my grandmother (Indira Gandhi) said as much.” However, he also added that there was a fundamental difference between what happened during the Emergency which was wrong, and what is happening in the country currently. Tweaking the Congress’ ears further, the SP leader (Azmi) said merely admitting mistakes or saying sorry after the irreparable damage wreaked for past errors or horrors, is not enough, and they (Congress) must go a step further to promise that such things will not recur in future.

Fuel and food combo

P

rices of commodities are rising at the fastest rate in 7 years, while job loss and pay cuts due to the lockdown are pushing India an opposite direction away from the projections by the government that economic revival is on the cards. According to the latest Consumer Price Index(CPI), food retail inflation has shot up from 6.7% in 2019-20 to 9.1% in 2020-21. Certainly, both COVID pandemic and rising price of fuels have proved to be a deadly combination against economic growth. COVID pandemic has practically brought the nation to a staggering halt when economic growth had slowed down over the years. However, after gradual easing of lockdown, for nearly months, the central government and its agencies have claimed that India’s economy is on the path to a clear “V-shaped recovery”-improving sharply after the collapse caused by the Covid-19 lockdown in March 2020. However, is the revival- often a reference to rising gross domestic product or GDP-translate into a recovery of the millions of jobs lost during the early months of the pandemic? Have those who lost jobs in 2020 gotten back into the workforce? Statistics indicate otherwise. The overall affect on the job market indicates systematic erosion of jobs, wages and household income. India’s unemployment rate has skyrocketed to a staggering 27.1% since the beginning of the lockdown, especially in metropolitan cities. Employment in Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and unorganized sectors are said to be the worst hit. This has left over 122 million( 12.2 crore) people in India losing their jobs in April 2020, according to estimates from Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy. Around 75% of them were small traders and wage-labourers. For a country whose economy has been on a downward slope since demonetisation in 2016, India’s management of the pandemic proved to be the final nail in the coffin. The second cause is the daily rise in prices of fuel which have resulted in sky rocketing of prices of essential commodities like gas, pulses, sugar, edible oils, tea, food grains. Although it may not have much affect on the flexible income group, they have caused maximum hardship to those belonging to the fixed income group. It is so because their salaries and wages remain the same but the prices of goods and services continue to rise. The middle class and those at the margins of our society are struggling. These challenges have been compounded by runaway inflation and an unprecedented rise in price of almost all household items and essential commodities. The rising prices of fuel has pushed up prices of various commodities owing to increase in freight or transport charges. Besides the low income group, labourers and those who lost jobs are not even able to buy enough daily food intake. Two items-rice and potato are the major staple food. Both have risen sharply during the recent months and driven largely due to increased transportation due to hike in fuel prices. Whole sale prices have risen by over 15% and the retail at over 30%. Oil companies executives disclosed that both petrol and diesel prices may increase further in coming days as retail prices may have to be balanced in line with global developments to prevent OMCs from making losses on sale of auto fuels. The government is unwilling to reduce oil taxes and if but only marginally.

DailyDevotion His Commission to Us

Feed My sheep. —John 21:17

This is love in the making. The love of God is not created— it is His nature. When we receive the life of Christ through the Holy Spirit, He unites us with God so that His love is demonstrated in us. The goal of the indwelling Holy Spirit is not just to unite us with God, but to do it in such a way that we will be one with the Father in exactly the same way Jesus was. And what kind of oneness did Jesus Christ have with the Father? He had such a oneness with the Father that He was obedient when His Father sent Him down here to be poured out for us. And He says to us, “As the Father has sent Me, I also send you” (John 20:21). Peter now realizes that he does love Him, due to the revelation that came with the Lord’s piercing question. The Lord’s next point is— “Pour yourself out. Don’t testify about how much you love Me and don’t talk about the wonderful revelation you have had, just ‘Feed My sheep.’ ” Jesus has some extraordinarily peculiar sheep: some that are unkempt and dirty, some that are awkward or pushy, and some that have gone astray! But it is impossible to exhaust God’s love, and it is impossible to exhaust my love if it flows from the Spirit of God within me. The love of God pays no attention to my prejudices caused by my natural individuality. If I love my Lord, I have no business being guided by natural emotions— I have to feed His sheep. We will not be delivered or released from His commission to us. Beware of counterfeiting the love of God by following your own natural human emotions, sympathies, or understandings. That will only serve to revile and abuse the true love of God.

Post-mortem

‘silencing’ young india via exaggerated charges

I

n support of the farmers’ agitation many whoever concer ned about the struggles of the farmers have been extending their support and solidarity. One such persons is a 23-year of Dalit labour activist Nodeep Kaur while expressing her support to the farmers’ struggle has been arrested and in police custody on January 12th, 2021 and was out on bail on the 25th of February for more than a month. A member of Mazdoor AdhikarSangathan (MAS) Union, Nodee p Kaur joined farmers’ protest at Singhu to air grievances about alleged non-payment of salaries and harassment by employers. Until December 2020, this Punjabi activist worked at a bulb-making factor in the Kundi Industrial Area (KIA) in Sonapat, which lies just about three kilometres from the Singhu Delhi-Haryana border. She had to leave as she was not paid her wages and so decided to join the protest. She was arrest from Singhu Border on January 12 and is reported to have been alleged “tortured and sexually assaulted” in police custody. None of her family members knew where she was being taken to. Later, it was revealed that she has been detained in Karnal jail. Ever since her arrest, the young Dalit labourer has become the symbol of labour rights’ campaign that runs parallel to the farmers’ protest. In recent

times, that the Government of India, to silence the Young India employsits brute force via the police force by arresting and registering FIRs that runs to many offences that have not been committed. In the caseof Nodeep Kaur, the Haryana police have filed two FIRs against her in connection with alleged violence in KIA on 12th January, 2021, where the charges invoked include the non-bailable sections 307, 384 and 379 of the Indian Penal Code – attempt to murder, extortion and theft respectively. Is it due to the gravity of the case or sheer ignorance, the police filed two FIRs? Her sister Rajveer Kaur had visited Nodeep in Karnal jail and saw that Nodeep had been hurt in her genitals. She also claimed that Nodeep has been assaulted in police custody. This is the face of the brute police that silences those who raises their voices for justice and equality. H e r l aw y e r a l s o claimed that a medical examination has shown wounds on Kaur’s body and private parts. The pattern we see in all these is similar and those arrested and tortured are young. She being a Dalit would have undergone severe torture and meted out unbearable assaults. As Indian society is premised on the system of caste this case has assumed global importance. For instance, the US Vice-President,

Kamala Harris’ niece and lawyer, Meena Harris, tweeted about Kaur and demanded her release. Meena emphasised on the issue that Nodeep Kaur has been in custody for the last 20-days. She also claimed that Kaur is being “tortured and sexually assaulted” in police custody. Incidentally, the Punjab and Haryana high court on the 26th of February, 2021, granted regular bail to labour activist Nodeep Kaur in the attempt to murder case lodged against her by Haryana police for allegedly attacking policemen. The High Court in its judgment observed that the slapping of attempt to murder, assault and other charges against Nodeep is a “debatable issue” and would be decided by the trial court. Further, Justice Avneesh Jhingan noted that the right to peaceful protest is circumscribed by a thin line. “The crossing of the line may change the colour of protest. It would be the subject matter of trials as toe whether the line for the peaceful protest was cross in the alleged incident or not.” Granting bail to the petitioner, the court in its order said, “… It will suffice that the petitioner shall maintain restraint while being on bail to ensure that no law and order issue arises due to her actions.” Nodeep belongs to Gordpur village of Muktsar in Punjab has already

been granted bail by a local court in Sonipat in another FIR registered against her bail petition. In her bail petition, her counsel had submitted that she along with some workers was on a peaceful protest outside the factory premises regarding nonpayment of wages to some of the labourers when she was arrested. However, the report of the medical examination points out that “Purplish bruises of around 10x7cm present over the left thigh. Lateral aspect, bruises of around 5x6 cm over the right buttock” as prepared by Dr.Ibka Farooq, lady medical office (LMO), civil hospital, Sonipat, on January 25th following directions of Sonipat duty magistrate. However, the high court had taken the cognizance after receiving two e-mails regarding her alleged harassment by the police. The police in its reply to the high court notice claimed that she used to take brokerage from labourers to get factory owners to paytheir dues and also exhort money from factory owners. Police in recent times exaggerates while framing charges against the Young India. In reality their charges seem to contradict each other. In another case of an activist Shiv Kumar’s medical report indicated injuries caused by “torture”. What wrong did they do? Did they violate the

rights enshrined in the Constitution? Expressing solidarity with the farmers and those who are afflicted if considered going against the government or the State, then there is something wrong with the government. Charges like attempt to murder and sedition are debatable. In order to fabricate the charges, the law enforcing agencies are so intensely and increasingly go after the Young India in recent times and in their claims, we see a lot of exaggerated charges that manifests a lot of contradictions. After 45 days a Dalit activist Nodeep Kaur get bail. As more activists secure their bail orders in recent times, it reveals that there’s something wrong somewhere. What does it indicate? It clearly signifies that the pattern followed by the State via GOI is similar that shows arrests and charges in indiscriminate manner. Many wonderas they read the charges that are directed towards Young India that points out and questions the excessive action that the police enforced that have no justification. It shows a clear line between the Young Activists versus the police/ the government building up to backlash. S u p r e m e C o u r t ’s observation in the bail hearing of DHFL promoters Kapil and Dheeraj Wadhwan – that agencies are satisfied with keeping

people behind bars “for some days” instead of fast trial and conviction – also points to warped priorities. Young India is coming of age as they want to build their India filled with freedom, liberty and equality. They are the guardians of democracy that enshrines freedom, fraternity and justice. As Justice Chandrachud observed while g ranting Ar nab Goswami interim bail in Mumbai police’s abetment to suicide probe: “Liberty survives by the vigilance of her citizens, on the cacophony of the media and in the dusty corridors of courts alive to the rise of (and not by) law.” As opined by Octavia Spencer: “Civil rights happened because youth got involved. The youth stood up and helped to break the pattern that their parents had got accustomed to living.” This is history and in which the Young India is engaging in setting rights the wrongs. In conjunction to this, Joseph Pulitzer rightly point out that “We are a democracy, and there is only one way to get a democracy on its feet … and that is by keeping the public informed about what is going on.”By fabricating and conniving the State via the governments employs its mechanisms to supress the freedoms that the citizens enjoy enshrined in the Constitution. NEW DELHI, MAR 3 (AGENCIES): The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has swept the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD)

by-polls by winning four Shalimar Bagh (North) and out of the five wards where Trilokpuri. election was held. The rulThe Congress won the ing party in Delhi won seats Chauhan Banger ward. in Kalyanpuri, Rohini-C, While the results have

been a shot in the arm for AAP ahead of the 2022 MCD elections, it was a setback for the BJP, which failed to hold onto its seat in Shalimar Bagh. AAP candidate Sunita Mishra trounced BJP’s Sunita Jaju by a margin of 2,705 votes in Shalimar Bagh. In fact all AAP candidates won by a sizeable margin. In Trilokpuri, AAP’s Vijay Kumar defeated BJP’s Om Prakash by 4,985 votes, in Kalyanpuri the winning margin of AAP’s Dhirendra Kumar was 7,045, while AAP’s Ram Chander defeated BJP’s Rakesh Goyal by 2,985 votes. Congress’ Chaudhary Zubair Ahmad who trounced AAP’s Mohammad Israq Khan by 10,642

votes registered the biggest win in the by-polls. The by-poll win has given the ruling party from Delhi confidence that they will be able to dislodge the BJP from the MCD in elections, which is scheduled for next year. “People from Delhi have once again voted for performance. I congratulate everyone. People are sick of BJP’s 15 years of misrule in MCD. Now they have made up their minds to install Aam Aadmi Party in MCD as well,” Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted after the results. Delhi Jal Board Vice Chairman and AAP MLA Raghav Chadha said the results were an indication of the 2022 MCD elections.

PM ordered clanging ‘thalis’, but we SC says dissent not seditious; offered plateful of food to people: Uddhav junks plea against Farooq MUMBAI, MAR 3 (IANS): In a sharpest offensive on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Wednesday said while the Centre clamped an abrupt lockdown in March year and asked people to clang thalis, the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) state government provided full meals at affordable rates to the poor, needy and migrants during the pandemic crisis. “When people were being told to bang empty plates, we provided the hungry millions with full ‘thalis’ (plateful of meals) in that time of distress and the scheme still continues,” Thackeray said, in his reply to the motion of thanks on the address of Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari. In his speech, Koshyari had lauded the government’s Shiv Bhojan Yojana launched on Jan. 26, 2020, and over 3.15 crore thalis at

Uddhav Thackeray

Rs.5/plate have been served till now. Costing the government around Rs.125-crore, the daily consumption of the affordable meals shot up from just 18K initially to 138K, the governor noted on March 1. Thackeray recalled how he had called up the PM after the sudden lockdown was declared in the country and later the MVA government helped transport lakhs of stranded migrants safely to their home states all over India. “In fact, after they reached homes in UP or Bihar, the migrants first

expressed gratitude to us for making all the arrangements,” the CM said. Thackeray also slammed the BJP at the Centre on the issue of the farmers’ agitation raging outside Delhi and the skirmishes on the India-China borders. “You could put nails on roads (to quell the farmers’ protest) and prevented them from entering the capital of the sovereign country, but you beat a retreat against China” Thackeray said sharply. However, LoP Devendra Fadnavis attacked the CM for raising irrelevant issues in the House and said Thackeray had insulted Indian soldiers on the borders. Taking a dig at Fadnavis, who had proclaimed in 2019 -I Will Return - as CM - Thackeray said even the Coronavirus had threatened to come again – “And, unfortunately, it has returned.”

NEW DELHI, MAR 3 (IANS): The Supreme Court on Wednesday said the expression of views which are different from the opinion of the government cannot be termed seditious, as it dismissed a PIL against the former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah for making statements against the scrapping of Article 370. A bench comprising Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Hemant Gupta said dissent cannot be termed seditious. The top court observation came on a plea filed by Rajat Sharma and others through advocate Shiv Sagar Tiwari. The top court also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on the petitioners for filing the plea against Abdullah. The plea cited alleged remarks made by Abdullah that he sought help of China and Pakistan against India on Article 370. The NC had rubbished reports that its patron Fa-

Farooq Abdullah

rooq Abdullah, during a television interview, said that Article 370 of the Constitution will be restored in the Kashmir Valley with China’s help. “The act of Abdullah is very serious against the interest of the nation therefore he deserves to be removed from the Parliament”, said the plea. The plea contended that Abdullah’s statement is anti-national and seditious and government should be directed to take appropriate action declaring him as underserving candidate to be a member of Parliament.

NEW DELHI, MAR 3 (PTI): The government has sanctioned a dozen fresh SSB battalions, comprising over 13,000 personnel for the Nepal and Bhutan borders guarding force, to “fortify” defences along these fronts including the trijunction area in Sikkim that adjoins Bhutan and Tibet, officials said. Though the Union Home Ministry has denied creation of a new field frontier for the border force, it has allowed the SSB to create one out of three new sector -- responsible for the operations of about 5-6 battalions -- and it is expected to come up in the Delhi-NCR region. The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), with an estimated strength of about 90,000 personnel, is the designated force to guard the open Indian fronts with Nepal (1,751 km) and Bhutan (699 km). SSB Director General (DG) Kumar Rajesh Chandra told PTI that the 12 new battalions will be raised in phases, three units each over the next four years. “It is very supportive of the government to have given the sanction to raise new battalions and establishments for the SSB. The new manpower will ensure that border security is strengthened,” the DG said. The SSB chief added that the government has also sanctioned a total of 548 posts to the force for deployment at four ICPs

(integrated check posts) along the Nepal border out of which two are already operational at Jogbani and Raxaul (both in Bihar). “We are thankful to the home ministry as these sanctions have come at a time when no new posts are being created. We are in the process to further implement the new approvals obtained,” Chandra said. As per an official proposal of the border force approved by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the new battalions will be used to reduce inter-border outpost distance, strengthen trade and transit routes along Nepal and Bhutan and fortifying SSB’ strength in the tri-junction area in Sikkim. The tri-junction area is the plateau between India, Bhutan and Tibet and the SSB is deployed just below it on the southern side as part of its mandate to guard the front with Bhutan. The militaries of India and China had witnessed an over 70day standoff in the Doklam at the tri-junction in 2017. The new manpower will also help the SSB, as per the proposal, in upgrading the existing border posts at “strategically important” locations along the two fronts and providing armed security to the eight integrated check posts along these fronts. Officials said the blue-

print for sanction of new battalions and establishments for the force was drawn after Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed the operations of the SSB in October, 2019 and directed it conduct a “vulnerability assessment and gap analysis” of the two borders it secures. The SSB, after completing this task, informed the MHA that it would require 12 new battalions, a frontier headquarter and at least 3 sector headquarters that would be used to enhance logistical and administrative support to its border units and some of those deployed for internal security duties in the hinterland. However, the home ministry, approved only a sector formation and 12 battalions to be raised in phases in view of the given financial space, officials said. A battalion has a strength of over 1,000 personnel. The remaining two sectors and a frontier are also expected to be sanctioned by the home ministry in the next phase, they said. A sector formation of a paramilitary or central armed police force (CAPF) is responsible for the operations of about 5-6 battalions and is headed by a deputy inspector general (DIG) rank officer. About 2-4 sectors form a frontier that is headed by an IG-rank officer.

NEW DELHI, MAR 3 (PTI): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said that China had mobilised its conventional and cyber forces to threaten India and warned that the government’s “cowardice” would have tragic consequences in the future. He cited a news report that claimed that night satellite images show Chinese build-up in the Depsang region near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh. “China mobilized its conventional and cyber forces to threaten India. Government of India (GOI) buckled. Mark my words, our land in Depsang is gone and DBO (Daulet Beg Oldie) is vulnerable. Government of India’s (GOI’s) cowardice will lead to tragic consequences in the future,” he said on Twitter. A border standoff between the Indian and Chinese armies has been on in Eastern Ladakh since May last year after a violent clash in the Pangong Tso Lake area, and both sides had gradually enhanced their deployment by rushing in tens of thousands of soldiers as well as heavy weaponry. Last month, the armies of the two countries concluded the withdrawal of troops and weapons from the north and south banks of Pangong Tso.

closing. The single-day rise is the highest since September 1, 2020, when the rupee had shot up 73 paise. “Market sentiments improved on hopes that massive stimulus packages from governments, easy monetary policies from central banks and progress in vaccination programmes would boost economic growth,” said Saif Mukadam, Research Analyst, Sharekhan by BNP Paribas. The dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, fell 0.12 per cent to 90.67. Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, rose 1.69 per cent to USD 63.76 per barrel. Mumbai, Mar 3 (PTI): The rupee on Wednesday surged by 65 paise -- its biggest single day spike since September 2020 -- to end at 72.72 against the US dollar on the back of weakness in the American dollar and rise in risk appetite in the global markets. A rally in domestic equities, foreign fund inflows and positive macro data also boosted the rupee sentiment. The US dollar weakened in the global markets as investors took heart from an easing in bond yields that has alleviated worries over possible interest rate hikes. At the interbank forex market, the local unit opened at 73.26 against the greenback and witnessed an intraday high of 72.71 and a low of 73.26. It finally settled at 72.72 against the American currency, registering a rise of 65 paise over its previous

curbed international demand for their services. “New export orders declined for the twelfth month running, albeit at the weakest rate since last March,” the survey noted. Meanwhile, Indian private sector output rose at the quickest pace in four months during February. The Composite PMI Output Index, which measures combined services and manufacturing output, increased from 55.8 in January to 57.3 in February. “Economic activity is generally expected to recover in the final quarter of fiscal year 2020/21 after coming out of technical recession in Q3, and the latest improvement in the PMI

companies suggested that the COVID-19 pandemic restricted labour supply. “There were further jobs losses across both the manufacturing and service sectors, which also could restrict domestic consumption in the coming months. However, with capacity pressures mounting, business sentiment strengthening and the vaccination programme widening, it seems that the best days are ahead of us regarding employment growth,” Lima said. On the prices front, amid reports of higher freight, fuel and retail prices, overall input costs increased in February. Furthermore, the rate of inflation accelerated to the strongest since February 2013. However, competitive pressures prevented companies from lifting their own fees. “Once firms’ additional cost burdens start to feed through to clients via price hikes, demand strength may come under pressure,” Lima noted.

acronym for IS. “These terrorist attacks undermine the fight against Daesh and destabilize Iraq.” Denmark, which like the U.S. and Britain also has troops at the base, said coalition forces at Ain alAsad were helping to bring stability and security to the country. “Despicable attacks against Ain al-Asad base in #Iraq are completely unacceptable,” Danish Foreign

Minister Jeppe Kofod tweeted. The Danish armed forces said two Danes, who were in the camp at the time of the attack, are unharmed. Wednesday’s attack comes two days before Pope Francis’ is scheduled to visit Iraq in a much anticipated trip that will include Baghdad, southern Iraq and in the northern city of Irbil. Last week’s U.S. strike along the border had been in response to a spate of rocket attacks that targeted the American presence, including one that killed a coalition contractor from the Philippines outside the Irbil airport. After that attack, the Pentagon said the strike was a “proportionate military response” taken after consulting coalition partners. Marotto said the Iraqi security forces were leading an investigation into the attack on Ain al-Asad. U.S. troops in Iraq significantly decreased their presence in the country last year under the Trump administration.

Myanmar FM attends virtual Asean meeting

U Wunna Maung Lwin

Ya n g o n , M a r 3 (IANS): Myanmar’s Foreign Minister U Wunna Maung Lwin attended an informal meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean), a state-media report said on Wednesday. U Wu n n a M a u n g Lwin apprised the virtual meeting on Tuesday of voting irregularities in the November 2020 general elections, five roadmaps put forward by the militaryrun State Administration Council, and the review of electoral voting lists by the Union Election Commission, among others, Xinhua news agency quoted the report as saying.

U Wu n n a M a u n g Lwin was appointed as the Foreign Minister by the State Administration Council, chaired by Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Sen-Gen Min Aung Hlaing. A one-year state of emergency was declared in Myanmar and state power was transferred to Sen-Gen Min Aung Hlaing after President U Win Myint and State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi were detained by the military on February 1. The coup was staged as the military alleged massive voting fraud in the 2020 general elections, which saw Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy win a majority of seats in both houses of parliament. Asean foreign ministers said in a statement on Tuesday that the regional bloc is ready to assist Myanmar in a positive, peaceful and constructive manner.

2 die after AstraZeneca vax in S Korea Seoul, Mar 3 (IANS): Two patients at the longterm care hospitals in South Korea’s Gyeonggi province died after receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine against Covid-19, the first cases of deaths since the country launched its nationwide vaccination programme last week. A 50-something patient with multiple underlying diseases died at a hospital in Goyang on Wednesday, just outside of Seoul’s northwestern border, after receiving the vaccine shot on Tuesday morning, according to health officials, Yonhap news agency reported. The patient began to show symptoms of heart failure and difficulty in breathing by the afternoon but recovered after being

put under emergency care. The symptoms recurred on Wednesday morning before the patient died. Health officials said they are yet to determine whether the patient suffered side-effects from the vaccine. The patient’s preexisting conditions included heart problems, diabetes and a stroke. The second patient, who was at a long-term care hospital in Pyeongtaek, 70 km south of Seoul, died on Wednesday morning, four days after being administered with the AstraZeneca vaccine, health officials said. The 63-year-old man with cerebrovascular disease had shown severe symptoms, such as a high fever and pantalgia, since receiving the vaccine jab last Saturday.

Kuwait swears in new govt amid mounting crises

Rome, Mar 3 (IANS): Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi signed a decree with fresh coronavirus containment measures. The decree, to be effective from March 6 to April 6, extends to March 27 a ban on travel between Italy’s 20 regions, the government said in a statement on Tuesday, Xinhua news agency reported, Xinhua news agency reported. Among the novelties is that beginning on March 27, museums will be open on weekends, while cinemas and theaters may reopen at 25 per cent capacity in regions designated as low risk. Under the new decree, schools, hairdressers, barbershops, and beauty salons will have to close in regions designated as at high risk of infections. Gyms, swimming pools and ski facilities will remain closed everywhere for the duration of the decree.

Sabah Al-Khaled

Dubai, Mar 3 (AP): Kuwaiti’s new Cabinet was sworn in Wednesday, staterun media reported, weeks after the government quit amid a deepening deadlock with parliament that has blocked badly needed reforms in the tiny oil-rich Gulf Arab state. Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al Hamad Al Sabah swapped out four ministers whose selections had angered various lawmakers for less contentious, veteran politicians, an apparent gesture to appease parliament. As the patient’s condition worsened, he was rushed to a higher-level hospital on Tuesday, but he passed away while showing symptoms of blood poisoning and pneumonia, according to officials. An investigation is currently underway to find whether the death had anything to do with the vaccination, officials said. Local quarantine officials of Gyeonggi province, home to both cities, earlier said the 63-year-old Pyeongtaek resident marked the nation’s first case of a severe adverse reaction from a Covid-19 vaccine, along with a 50-something man in Uijeongbu, also in the same province, since the national inoculation campaign began on Friday.

elected parliament presents the first significant challenge to Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Sabah, who ascended the throne last fall. The infighting has diminished public confidence, caused instability and hastened the country’s worst debt crisis since the 1990 Iraqi invasion. As Kuwait’s general reserve fund runs out of cash, lawmakers skeptical of deep-rooted corruption have prevented the government from borrowing as other Gulf states have done in response to the coronavirus pandemic and low crude prices. Kuwait stands out among the hereditar y sheikhdoms of the Persian Gulf for its rambunctious parliament and robust political debate. But parliament’s powers are strictly limited. Sheikh Nawaf suspended parliament last month until mid-March as tensions escalated over the Cabinet appointments.

The restrictive measures that entered into force on Tuesday consist of a travel ban and asset freeze. In addition, persons and entities in the EU are forbidden from making

funds available to those listed, either directly or indirectly, said the statement. The decision was made after Josep Borrell, the EU’s high representative for foreign affairs and security policy, proposed the use of the bloc’s new human rights sanctions system at a meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the member states last

week. This is the first time the EU has imposed sanctions in the framework of the new EU Global Human Rights Sanctions Regime since it was launched in December last year. The US also announced on Tuesday sanctions and restrictions against Russian individuals and entities over the alleged poisoning of

Navalny. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Twitter that his country stands with the EU and UK “to counter Russia’s actions and in calling for Navalny’s release”. Navalny, a harsh Kremlin critic, fell into a coma on a flight from the Russian city of Tomsk to Moscow in August 2020.

Nagaland Post, Dimapur THURSDAY, MARCH 4, 2021

PM Modi ruled Indian TV in 2020: BARC report NEW DELHI, MAR 3 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the most-watched personality on television in India last year, according to the annual TV viewership report for 2019-2020 by Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC). PM Modi’s public addresses regarding the ongoing Covid pandemic, and his also his speeches focussing on a range of issues -- from India being at the forefront of exporting Covid-19 vaccines to the ongoing farmer protests. Broadly, here are the top three trends that one can spot in the report: THE MODI WAVE “Whether they are his interviews, speeches at global events, addresses to the nation or even a wildlife adventure show, channels that broadcast the content see their viewership leapfrog and set new levels,” the report stated, explaining the impact PM Modi had.

Notably, PM Modi’s speech at Red Fort, which was over two hours long, with 133 million viewers, saw a rise by 40 per cent, compared to his Independence Day speech in 2019. The Prime Minister’s speech on March 24, 2020, where he announced the first lockdown, saw more viewing minutes than any of his previous addresses. His address to nation in April 2020, where he announced a relief package of RS 20 lakh crores, became

the most watched address with over 203 million viewers tuning in. “Each time PM Modi’s coronavirus-related addresses were aired, there was a noticeable drop in the viewership of major genres like General Entertainment Channels (GEC), Movies and Kids,” the report said. His call for solidarity by switching off lights for nine-long minutes, reflected in 60 per cent decline in TV viewership during those nine minutes.

The report also notes that due to the pandemic, and following an increasing curiosity about government measures and announcements, the share of news in total TV viewership tripled as compared to the yearly growth of seven per cent previously. M Y T H O L O G Y, D O O R DA R S H A N REIGNED Last year, “the viewership contribution of mythological shows to Hindi GEC genre spiked from a mere 14 per cent to 43 per cent by week 15, 2020”. The fact that no new content was being created because of Covid guidelines, archived content made a huge comeback and Doordarshan (DD) was probably the biggest benefactor. The channel’s decision to re-telecast “Ramayan” and “Mahabharat”, and other popular TV shows of the eighties and the nineties, saw the total viewership of

the channel grow by 68 per cent last year. LOVE FOR FILMS STAYED INTACT U n l i k e t h e G E C s, which suffered an initial loss due to lack of original content, BARC notes that the Movies as a channel genre didn’t face any hiccups, and these saw a growth by 10 per cent over the viewership of 2019. “Regional movies genre posted a higher growth than their Hindi counterpart, although Hindi language genre accounted for close to 60 per cent of total movie genres viewership. Apart from Hindi, the other major markets for the genre were Telugu, Tamil and Kannada,” the report stated. However, the report also suggests that lack of original content meant a reduced share for GEC content in the first half the year. It became a normal, post July, once the lockdown restrictions were eased.

he organisers of the Eurovision Song Contest have said that all 41 artists will perform live and in-person at this year’s competition. Eurovision is hoping to return this year – with the final set to be held on May 22 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands – after it was forced to cancel its event in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. Eurovision’s executive supervisor Martin Österdahl has now confirmed that the contest intends to have all 41 acts perform live in Rotterdam in May. The contestants had previously been asked to submit a “live-on-tape” performance in case they are unable to travel or take part due to the pandemic. Speaking to the BBC’s Newscast podcast, Österdahl said that the contestants’ travel to Rotterdam was “necessary”, adding:

“This isn’t a holiday trip, this is actually a job that needs to be done.” Delegations from each country will be limited to 20 people (down from an average of 38), while media and commentators – such as the BBC’s Graham Norton – will broadcast from ventilated commentary booths to further help prevent the spread of the virus. Österdahl, who stressed that “very thorough” health and safety measures will be in place at the Rotterdam venue, also said that the Eurovision organisers hadn’t yet decided if a live audience would be in attendance, but that they were hoping for “the most normal Eurovision song contest that we can”. “Hopefully we’ll have some audience: it makes a huge difference to the atmosphere of the broadcast if we have some people present.” (NME)

ifestyle changes and customized diets could be key to optimizing mental health, a new study suggests. The study indicates that significant dietary and lifestyle approaches to improve mental well-being among young women include daily breakfast consumption, moderate-to-high exercise frequency, low caffeine intake and abstinence from fast food. “There is increasing evidence that diet plays a major role in improving mental health, but everyone is talking about a healthy diet,” said researcher Lina Begdache from Binghamton University in the US. “We need to consider a spectrum of dietary and lifestyle changes based on different age groups and gender. There is not one healthy diet that will work for everyone,” Begdache added. The researcher believes that mental health therapies need to consider the differences in degree of brain maturity between young (18-29 years old) and mature (30 years or older) adults, as well as the brain

morphology among men and women. For the study, published in the journal Nutrients, the team conducted an online survey to examine food intake, dietary practices, exercise and other lifestyle factors in these four subpopulations. More than 2,600 participants completed the questionnaire after responding to social media posts advertising the survey. The team collected data at different timepoints and seasons and found important dietary and lifestyle contributors to mental distress -- defined as anxiety and depression -- in each of the groups.

The team found that to improve mental well-being of young men, dietary and lifestyle approaches include frequent exercise, moderate dairy consumption, high meat intake, as well as low consumption of caffeine and abstinence from fast food. Dietary approaches to improve mental well-being among mature men include moderate intake of nuts, the researchers said. The team split the respondents into two age groups because human brain development continues into the late 20s. For young adults of both genders, quality of diet appears to have an impact on the developing brain. (IANS)

Juventus ease past Spezia 3-0 Rome, Mar 3 (IANS): Cristiano Ronaldo marked his 600th league game with a low-strike as Juventus put on a second-half show to dominate Spezia 3-0 in Serie A. Juventus, still struggling with injuries with Alvaro Morata only fit for the bench, hosted Spezia on Tuesday without Paulo Dybala, Leonardo Bonucci, Giorgio Chiellini, Juan Cuadrado, and Arthur, while Matthijs de Ligt was ruled out in the warm-up with Gianluca Frabotta stepping in, Xinhua news agency reported. The Bianconeri should have established the lead in the first half, but Federico Chiesa’s opener in the ninth minute was ruled offside while Ronaldo’s curler before the interval rattled the upright. Juve’s head coach Andrea Pirlo made tactical changes by throwing on Morata and Federico Bernardeschi on the hour mark, and the duo made an impact one minute later as Bernardeschi burst down the left and rolled a pass across, Morata got in front of his marker to tap in from close range. The Old Lady doubled the lead in the 70th minute, Bernardeschi was involved again as the Italian international broke into the box with a mazy run before squaring for Chiesa, whose first shot was parried, but he reacted quickly to sweep in the rebound. Finch eventually fell to Sodhi in the 16th over but Maxwell turned up the heat in the next two overs. He smacked four fours and two sixes off James Neesham to take 28 runs in the 17th over. Then, he hit a six and a four off Tim Southee in the next before falling off the last ball of that over. Boult and Kyle Jamieson then gave just 14 runs in the next two overs.

BRIEF SCORE: Australia 208/4 in 20 overs (Glenn Maxwell 70, Aaron Finch 69; Ish Sodhi 2/32) beat New Zealand 144 all out in 17.1 overs (Martin Guptill 43, Devon Conway 38; Ashton Agar 6/30) by 64 runs

Wrestler Sonam out of WRS due to head injury Rohit Sharma, Bumrah lose one New Delhi, Mar 3 (IANS): Haryana’s teenage wrestler Sonam Malik has pulled out of the upcoming World Ranking Series (WRS) due to a minor head injury sustained in a national camp, said her personal coach Ajmer Singh on Wednesday. The 19-year old national champion in 62 kg received four to five stitches on her head while she was training with 2016 Olympic bronze medallist Sakshi Malik during the national camp in Lucknow last week, said Ajmer. Sonam was preparing for the WRS starting Thursday. “Since Sonam was still feeling pain in the head her parents decided not to send her for the Ranking Series, we informed the Wrestling

Federation of India (WFI) about her health. The WFI has agreed to drop her from the international exposure tour. Sonam has taken a break from training for a few days to recover,”

Sonam’s coach told IANS. Sonam had defeated Sakshi in the last month’s national championship held at Agra. “Sonam’s next focus will be Asian Olympic qualifier in April. We hope she would be fine by next week and resume training,” said Singh. The WFI had selected both Sonam and Sakshi for the Italy tour. The national team of 34 players including star wrestler Bajrang Punia (65 kg) and Vinesh Phogat (53 kg) left for the Italian competition on Wednesday morning. Ravi Dahiya (57 kg) and Deepak Punia (86 kg) too have pulled out of the competition. Dahiya is on the injured list while Deepak is unwell.

spot each in ICC T20I rankings

New Delhi, Mar 3 (IANS): India batsman Sharma and fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah each went down a place in the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) T20I rankings for batsmen and bowlers, respectively. While Sharma is now 14th from 13th, Bumrah went down to 16th from 15th in the updated rankings that was released on Wednesday. Sharma and Bumrah’s moves down the rankings was because of New Zealand’s Martin Guptill and Australia’s Jhye Richardson moving up due to their performances in the five-match T20I series between the two sides. Kiwi opener Guptill, who missed out on a century in the first T20I by three runs, gained three slots to reach 11th. Richardson replaced Bumrah in 15th place. Rohit Sharma Meanwhile, India captain Virat Kohli (6th) and opener KL Rahul (2nd) not out in the Christchurch opener has helped him gain 46 spots and reach 17th maintained their positions on the table. New Zealand’s Devon Conway’s 99 position after just eight matches.

Steyn apologises for ‘cricket gets forgotten in IPL’ remark New Delhi, Mar 3 (PTI): South Africa pace great Dale Steyn on Wednesday apologised for his criticism of the Indian Premier League, saying he never intended to “degrade or insult” the world’s biggest franchisebased T20 tournament. The 37year-old veteran fast bowler said his statement that cricket is sometimes forgotten amid all the money talk in the IPL was taken out of context in social media. “IPL has been nothing short of amazing in my career, as well as other players too. My words were never intended to be degrading, insulting, or comparing of any leagues. Social media and words out of context can often do that,” Steyn tweeted. “My apologies if this has upset anyone.” Steyn’s apology came after he claimed on the sidelines of the Pakistan Super League 6, where he is representing Quetta Gladiators, that money is given more importance than the game in the IPL. Steyn had said that this was one of the reasons why he had not featured regularly in the event. “I think when you go to the IPL, there are such big squads and so many big names and so much emphasis on maybe the

amount of money players earn and everything like that, so sometimes, somewhere down the line, cricket gets forgotten,” Steyn, who was part of the Royal Challengers Ban-

Dale Steyn

galore squad in the last IPL held in the UAE, had stated. In January this year, Steyn announced that he is opting out of the IPL 2021 but will play other leagues around the world. Steyn’s decision led to RCB releasing him ahead of the auction. Steyn played 95 IPL matches, picking up 97 wickets with a best of 3 for 8. But the South African’s repeated injury breakdowns didn’t help his cause and he featured in just 12 IPL matches in the last three seasons.

Too much noise about spin-friendly tracks: Kohli A h m e da ba d, M a r 3 (PTI): Stop the noise, tighten up that defence and get on with the game -- a combative Indian skipper Virat Kohli said on Wednesday ahead of the fourth and final Test against England as he navigated persistent queries on the spin-friendly tracks in the country. India annihilated England inside two days in the Pink-ball Test at Motera, days after the visitors crumbled on another spinassisting pitch in Chennai in the second Test. England managed 112 and 81 in the Ahmedabad Test after scoring 134 and 164 in Chennai as Ravichandran Ashwin and Axar Patel tormented them in turns. “There is always too much noise and too much conversation about spin tacks,” Kohli said at the pre-match press conference ahead of the fourth and final Test starting here on Thursday. K Y M C

“I am sure if our media is in a space to contradict those views or present views which say that it is unfair to criticise only spin tracks, then it will be a balanced conversation.” Kohli, at the end of the third Test, had blamed the batsmen’s technique for their failure on the Motera track. “But the unfortunate bit is everyone plays along with that narrative (spinning

tracks) and keeps making it news till the time it is relevant. And then a Test match happens, if you win on day 4 or 5, no one says anything but if it finishes in two days, everyone pounces on the same issue,” he said. When asked what he thought were the skills required to survive on such challenging spin tracks, Kohli emphasised on having a solid defence, which, he

believes, is not the strongest anymore thanks to shorter formats. “Defence is imperative. Because of influence of white-ball cricket, Test cricket is witnessing consistent results but it is just a by-product in reference to batting that the defence part of the batting is being compromised,” he said. “That grind of playing four-five sessions is not the focus these days and everybody wants to put on 300-350 runs on the board quickly. Probably people are not focussing on defence, they have to switch to other formats, so the game is fast paced. “So definitely the skill is required and it’s not just the sweep shot. For me it’s defence. This aspect of batting has gone back a bit.” Kohli cited one of India’s losses in New Zealand when the team struggled on a seaming pitch. He recalled how it was the batsmen’s technique, and not the track, that came in for scrutiny.

London, Mar 3 (AP): A 15-point lead, 21 victories in a row, a club record-tying 28 games unbeaten. The extraordinar y numbers are stacking up for Manchester City as Pep Guardiola’s winning machine powers to the Premier League title and — whisper it — a potential quadruple. Guardiola particularly liked what he saw in the 4-1 win over Wolverhampton on Tuesday. Heading into the final 10 minutes at Etihad Stadium, City’s players were in the unusual position of being held, 1-1, but there was no panic. Instead, they just stepped up a gear, overwhelmed Wolves with their pressing and scored three goals. Gabriel Jesus scored in the 80th minute and again from close range with virtually the last kick of the game after Riyad Mahrez had made it 3-1, capping a period of incessant pressure by City after Wolves equalized in the 61st minute through Conor Coady’s header — the visitors’ first touch in

City’s box. Leander Dendoncker had given City the lead for the first time with an owngoal in the 15th. Another test passed by City in its march to reclaiming the title from Liverpool, with Wolves having proved a tough opponent for City in recent years — winning their meetings home and away last season, for example. City’s class of 2020-21 is made of sterner stuff this season, though. The team has won every game it has played in all competitions since Dec. 19 and now has 15 victories in a row in the league. Its unbeaten streak stretched to 28 matches — tying a club record also achieved under Guardiola in 2017. Second-place Manchester United can restore the 12-point gap to City by beating Crystal Palace on Wednesday but doesn’t have the consistency being shown by Guardiola’s side, which also is in the final of the League Cup, the quarterfinals of the FA Cup and leads 2-0 after the

first leg of its matchup with Borussia Monchengladbach in the Champions League’s round of 16. Mahrez is one of them, the Algeria winger playing a key part in the opening goal by controlling a searching pass by Rodri and driving over a cross that would have been turned into the net by Raheem Sterling if Dendoncker hadn’t done so himself. Wolves’ only good spell of the game came after Coady scored his first Premier League goal, with Adama Traore blazing two shots over the bar. City regrouped and after Jesus swept in a loose ball from the edge of sixyard box after Kyle Walker’s cross was blocked near the goal line, Mahrez placed a shot into the bottom corner in the 90th after Wolves were hounded out of possession. Jesus converted from close in for the fourth goal in stoppage time after goalkeeper Rui Patricio could only parry out a shot from substitute Ilkay Gundogan.
