COVID-19 cases climb to 34 in India

NEW DELHI/GUWAHATI, MAR 7 (NPN): Three more cases have been found positive for COVID19. These include two from Ladakh with travel history to Iran and one from Tamil Nadu with travel history to Oman. With these new cases, total number of confirmed cases now stands at 34 in the country.

According to the health ministry, 31 cases were being treated in hospitals and were stable. It may be mentioned that the earlier three from Kerala have been discharged. Concerning the American national found positive in Bhutan, the ministry said that more than 150 contacts have been put under IDSP surveillance.

In addition, 108 samples have been received from Iran Saturday morning, the ministry said, adding that those samples were being tested at the laboratory in AIIMS. Also, six scientists from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) have been stationed in Iran.

The Assam government has sounded high alert across the state after a person tested positive for coronavirus in Bhutan, after travelling from Assam.

On Friday, the Bhutan Prime Minister’s Office confirmed the report and said that one case of COVID-19 was confirmed at 11 p.m. on March 5 and the result was validated at 12:30 a.m. on March 6.

According to the report, the patient is 76-year-old, from the US and had entered Bhutan from Paro-International Airport, after embarking Drukair flight from Guwahati in Assam on March 2.

The US tourist had also spent a few days in Assam and took a 7-day Brahmaputra river cruise before leaving for Bhutan. The Assam government has identified as many as 127 people who have come in contact with the US tourist and they are being quarantined.

Assam Minister of State for Health Pijush Hazarika said: “We have identified all hotels, resort and the particular cruise where he stayed. We have also identified as many as 127 people who had come in contact with him and they are being quarantined.”

“The US tourist reached in Jorhat on February 22 and left for Bhutan on March 2. We are very serious over the issue. Till now, no positive case has been identified in our state. We are seriously monitoring the overall situation.

DIMAPUR, MAR 7 (NPN): Government of India’s Representative and Interlocutor for Naga Peace Talks, R.N Ravi and Working Committee (WC) of the Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs) held a closed door meeting Saturday in New Delhi and deliberated on the proposed “Upper House”.

Highly placed sources informed Nagaland Post that the meeting was held between the 20-member WC NNPGs delegation led by its convenor, N Kitovi Zhimomi and Ravi, who is also the Governor of Nagaland.

The source informed that the issue of the proposed “Upper House” in Nagaland dominated the meeting and that the negotiating parties deliberated, in detail, the composition and functions of the “Upper House”. “The meeting was mainly around the details of the proposed Upper House. We are working on the details so that a draft agreement could be finalised at the earliest,” said the source.

after concluding the negotiations over contentious issues on October 31, 2019, the negotiating parties have been working to smoothen the rough edges of the final agreement. Earlier on February 24, 2020 meeting, Ravi had asked NNPGs to “come clear on composition of upper house” and to “work on finalising their draft”.

Post February 24 meeting, in an exclusive interview to Nagaland Post, both Ravi and Kitovi had admitted that the negotiating parties wanted “detailed clarity on few issues to finalise the draft agreement”.

Kitovi had told Nagaland Post that whatever the two negotiating parties have agreed in principle during negotiations, that concluded on October 31, 2019, have to be finalised and then the same would be forwarded to the Parliament. Earlier on February 23, Kitovi had rubbished speculations that NNPGs were negotiating only for Nagas of Nagaland.

In light of the above, NPYF has urged the responsible armed forces to cease its exercises over Dimapur and adjoining areas including other places in Nagaland and conduct its exercises in unpopulated areas.

Dimapur prepares to tackle COVID-19 outbreak DIMAPUR, MAR 7 (NPN): An isolation ward with three beds has been set up at Dimapur District Hospital, while some more beds have been identified at Referral Hospital for dealing with any exigencies vis-à-vis coronavirus (COVID-19). Mentioning this at a meeting of District Taskforce on Coronavirus held at the conference hall of deputy commissioner’s (DC) office here on Saturday, chief medical officer (CMO) Pangjung Sangtam said military hospital had also been kept ready with ICU and isolation ward. He said 40 beds were also kept ready at the district welfare office at Chümoukedima.

JCPI clarifies on ILP drive

DIMAPUR, MAR 7 (NPN): Joint Committee on Prevention of Illegal Immigrants (JCPI) said as the December 9, 2019 notification had set 90 days to obtain Inner Line Permit (ILP) for people requiring it, imposing fines on one pretext or the other and during the pendency of its ultimatum was untimely.

Reacting to the reported ILP drive conducted by Dimapur district administration on February 27, the committee said the joint meeting held on March 3 had lauded the efforts of Dimapur deputy commissioner to effectively implement ILP and agreed to have better coordination. In the meeting with chief secretary Temjen Toy on the same day, JCPI said it reiterated the March 15, 2020 deadline for having December 1, 1963 as the cutoff date for RIIN and implementing ILP on the basis of RIIN’s cut-off date.

The committee said it also reminded the chief secretary to set up Foreigners Tribunals as per Foreigners Act, 1946 and to physically implement ILP with necessary infrastructure, modalities and standard operating procedures as per the new guidelines.

DIMAPUR, MAR 7 (NPN): Taking note of illegal tax collection by various Naga Political Groups (NPGs), Darogapathar Village Council (DVC) affirmed to reinforce its August 18, 2016 resolution to ban any sort of tax collection within its jurisdiction. In a press note, DVC council chairman, Nungtok Meren Jamir, secretary, A Ado Bizo claimed that the council had received information regarding collection of daily, weekly and monthly tax by various NPGs. DVC warned that any individual/ group involved in such activities will be dealt with seriously as per the law. DVC also reiterated its stand on “one government, one tax”.

DIMAPUR: Minister of Health & Family Welfare, S. Pangnyu Phom, has called for the first state review meeting with the consultant, contractors, and state officials along with secretary H&FW to review the project progress of Medical College, Phriebagei (MCP) and TCCC NHAK on March 7.

An official press release stated that during the meeting held at IDSP hall, directorate of Health & Family Welfare, Pangnyu expressed that whatever has been deliberated to rec-

tify the prevailing issues should be implemented to accelerate the project faster and also encouraged them to work harder for the success of the project.

He regretted that projects were facing many untoward hardship especially concerning the land instability, which is delaying the project progress. However, he encouraged them not to be discouraged by the practical problem and work harder so that completion of the project as per the expected timeline can be achieved.

The project update of Nagaland Medical College was presented by the consultant and open discussion with the contractor and the department has been initiated in the meeting.

Earlier in the morning the officers under directorate of Health & Family Welfare led by principal director (PD), Dr. Vizolie Z. Suokhrie inspected the Medical College site.

PD stated that all officers should be aware of the ongoing project and need to be aware of the situation and be informed.

DIMAPUR: Nagaland Law Students’ Federation (NLSF) has re-dedicated to uphold its motto of “Justice For All” and to achieve its main goal for an early completion of the Nagaland High Court, Govt. Law College and a directorate of Prosecution in the state.

A press release from NLSF president, C. Talimoa and information & publicity secretary, Renbeni Ezung stated, this decision was made during its presidential meeting held on March 7 in Dimapur.

NLSF stated that, the lackadaisical attitude of the concerned authorities of the state government towards law students have led to the

non-accomplishment of demands of the law federation.

It further added that without a Govt. Law College, the students’ community, especially those from the impoverished sections of the society and from far flung locations were facing much hardship in pursuing law studies in the state.

NLSF expressed concerned that despite the passage of more than 57 years since attaining statehood, Nagaland was yet to have a Government Law College, which the NLSF has been pursuing for many years to the concerned authorities of the state govt. for establishment of a Govt/Public Law College in the state.

Campaign on EMTCT held at Meluri village

DIMAPUR: Campaign on “Elimination of mother to child transmission (EMTCT): HIV and syphilis” was held on March 6 at village council hall, Meluri.

According to DIPR report, resource persons from DAPCU Phek and Project AHANA shared the basics of HIV and means of eliminating new transmission and services available to the pregnant women and HIV patients. Around 130 women and 30 men attended the campaign. The campaign is sponsored by Nagaland State AIDS Control Society (NSACS) and organised by District AIDS Prevention and Control Unit (DAPCU) Phek and organised to eliminate new transmission from mother to child by 2020 itself.

DPDB meetings held in Tuensang, Longleng DIMAPUR: Tuensang DPDB monthly meeting was held on March 7 in the conference hall of the deputy commissioner, under the chairmanship of deputy commissioner Tuensang, Kumar Ramnikant.

According to DIPR report, during the meeting, DC highlighted about the seriousness of Corona Virus (Covid-19) which was spreading rapidly across the globe. He said that the threat was real and asked to avoid gatherings, shaking hands and urged public not to panic. In this connection, a district task force committee was formed to chalk out the plan.

The meeting focused on new agenda such as registration of society was forwarded to the government for necessary action and the construction of welcome gate at Longkhim town was forwarded to chairman DPDB. DC also discussed about Poshan Pakhwada to sensitize the people on nutrition and health and asked all the stake holders to make it a success in the district. Hospital Longleng to tackle the virus.

CMO Longleng, Dr. Obangjungla asserted that isolation ward was reserved in the district hospital and other strategies like training of two nurses exclusively for that purpose was done. She also informed on preventive measures like maintaining personal hygiene such as proper hand washing with soap, proper use of masks and disposal of masks after five hours of use.

the virus, as such only basic preventive measures is taken up in the hospital.

In connection with the frequent outbreak of fire incident in recent years and location of Fire Service station in the outskirt of the town, the Senior Citizens Forum of Longleng has proposed for emergency fire brigade in the heart of Longleng town for timely response to such incidents in the future. In this regard, the board decided to find a suitable location in consultation with administration, Police and civil societies of the district. The board also recommended for upgrada-

In connection to inflow of banned consignments, the SP and ADC Longleng asserted that check gates were removed in the state and shared that it was impossible to control without check gates. They suggested resuming the check gates in the district and also seeking the cooperation and support of the churches and NGOs like PPC, PSC and Phomla Hoichen to conduct joint search operation in the town and roads.

DIMAPUR: Various institutions organised programmes and initiatives to commemorate international women’s day (IWD) under the theme for 2020, “I am generation equality: realising women’s rights”.

CMA Phek: Chakhesang Mothers’ Association (CMA) in collaboration with the District Administration, Phek and Phek District Legal Services Authority (PDLSA) observed the day at Badminton Stadium, Phek town on March 7.

A press release from CMA Phek stated that, minister of Planning & Coordination, Land Revenue and Parliamentary Affairs, Neiba Kronu in his address challenged the Chakhesang mothers to be loving & caring mothers for a harmonious and progressive society. He appealed the mothers to be uniting factor of the community and urged them to aim for well being and progress of the society.

Stating that good roads and electricity were essential for the process of development, he urged upon the people to cooperate with the government for proper execution of such projects in the state. Stating that road connectivity and waterway to Eastern side of Myanmar will greatly boost the state’s economy, Kronu informed that he was planning to take up the proposal with the government.

NSWC Kohima: International Women’s Day (IWD) conclave an initiative of Nagaland State Wo m e n C o m m i s s i o n (NSWC) in collaboration with Nagaland College Principal Association was held at Hotel Vivor Kohima on Saturday.

Chairperson NSCW, Khrienuo Tachü in her key note said many Naga women were quite empowered in a non-aggressive way, enabled particularly through quality education.

However, she said inspite of the high literacy rate in Nagaland, that empowering factor was yet to come to the fore. She remarked that wholesome empowerment of women was lacking in Nagaland in spite of numerous programmes and therefore, this year’s emphasis was looking at quality education as an empowering tool for complementary walk of men and women towards progressive development of society. She informed that according to 2011 census, the sex ratio in the state of Nagaland is 931 females per 1000 males and the female literacy rate of Nagaland is 76.11 percent as per 2011 census, which is above the national average. She said as per 2019 report, Nagaland state is the lowest crime rate against women and several indexes of gender equality and development where the state is at par with other performing states. However, she said the research findings in reality revealed that the

state is lagging behind in qualitative and wholesome living.

HoD of Higher Education Dr. Apeni Lotha in her address highlighted many provisions for women under UGC in higher education. She emphasised the need to uplift the women education especially in the remote places. Principal Japfü Christian College Dr. Visakhonu Hibo in her address said the key words in the new education policy (NEP) envisions education system that contributes directly to transforming the country into sustainable, equitable and vibrant knowledge society by providing high quality education to all. Dr. Chubatola Aier in her address as one of the panellists said men and women should be given equal education facilities to develop our society together.

Dr. Vizovol Mekro, another panellists said higher education has a primary role to play in building knowledge based economy providing sustainable employment opportunities and ensuring a better standard of living to the existing upcoming generation.

Thingujam Sharatchandra Singh, a panellist in his address said that everyone needed to ponder upon why the graduate students in the state were not employable and need to revisit the education system in the state. Security forces narrowly escape IED blast in Manipur Correspondent IMPHAL, Mar 7: Troopers of Assam Rifles narrow escaped a powerful IED (Improvised Explosive Device) explosion on Saturday suspected to be planted by rebels along Imphal-Ukhrul Road at Seijang Tera Makhong village along Imphal-Ukhrul Road under Lamlai police station of Imphal East district today, around 9.45 am.

The IED went off when troops of 15 Assam Rifles on foot patrolling

were approaching area where the explosion took place. This was the second instance of blast in the area but no casualty was reported this time. Few weeks ago, a similar IED explosion had taken place in the area as reported by police and villagers.

IMPHAL, MAR 7: Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh on Saturday urged people to reduce the scale of celebration of upcoming Yaoshang festival.

Singh joined the chorus considering the alarming spread of COVID-19 across the globe that has also hit the country. Many concerned civil society organisations and individuals have also called for low scale celebration of the festival.

Yaosang, one of the major a festival celebrated in Manipur for five days in spring, particularly by the majority Meitei community and coinciding with Holi festival is due to commence from March 9.

The celebration of the festival includes playing with colours, thabal chonga (a kind of traditional dance form in the night time during the festival), sports events and public functions over the period of five days and all of which involve large gathering.

“I am deeply concerned that of the biggest festival of Manipur, namely Yaoshang is around the corner, and safety and health of people is of prime concern,” the chief minister stated in his written statement through

The chief minister made the appeal in line with an advisory issued by the Union ministry of health and family welfare on March 5 directing to avoid mass gatherings or possibly postpone such events till the disease spread is contained.

COVID-19 has spread to over 88 countries across the world affecting more than one lakh people as of now.

Though there is no confirmed case of the disease in Manipur as yet, 31 confirmed cases have been reported in the country.

Manipur shares an international border with Myanmar, which itself neighbours China, the country where the first outbreak of the disease was reported.

“As we may be aware one of the modes of transmission of the disease is mainly from person-to-person, between people who are close contact with one another and through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

NEW DELHI, MAR 7 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday asked people to stay away from rumours regarding coronavirus and emphasised on the need to follow the advice of doctors in this regard.

He also asked people to avoid handshakes and start greeting others with ‘namaste’ once again.

“In such times rumours circulate very rapidly. Some say don’t eat this, don’t do that. Some people will bring in new things such as eat this to keep coronavirus away.

It is my request to all my fellow countrymen, kindly keep away from these kinds of rumours,” he said.

“Whatever you do, kindly do it on the advice of your doctor. Let’s not become doctors ourselves,” the Prime Minister added.

The entire world is taking up the habit of ‘namaste’, Modi said. If due to some reason we have discontinued this habit, it is the right time to once again take this up instead of handshakes, Modi said.

MUMBAI, MAR 7 (PTI): The Enforcement Directorate on Saturday continued questioning Yes Bank founder Rana Kapoor in connection with a money laundering probe against him and others, officials said.

They said Kapoor was brought to the agency’s office in the Ballard Estate area Saturday afternoon.

The ED had searched Rana’s residence in the upscale ‘Samudra Mahal’ complex in the Worli area on Friday night and had grilled him there too.

The questioning of Kapoor is continuing, they said.

The case against Kapoor is linked to the scamhit DHFL as the loans lent by the bank to the company allegedly turned non-performing assets (NPAs), they said.

Action against Kapoor is being conducted under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) by the ED.

The central agency is also probing Kapoor’s role in connection with the disbursal of loans to some corporate entities and the subsequent alleged kickbacks reportedly received in his wife’s accounts.

Other alleged irregularities are also under the agency’s scanner, including the one related to the alleged PF fraud in the Uttar Pradesh power corporation, they added.

The CBI has recently taken over investigation into the Rs 2,267-crore Employees’ Provident Fund fraud in Uttar Pradesh, where hardearned savings of power sector employees were invested in Dewan Housing Finance Corporation (DHFL).

The ED action came after the Reser ve Bank on Thursday imposed a moratorium on the capitalstarved Yes Bank, capping withdrawals at Rs 50,000 per account and superseded the board of the private sector lender with immediate effect.

Yes Bank will not be able to grant or renew any loan or advance, make any investment, incur any liability or agree to disburse any payment.

As per the RBI’s draft reconstr uction scheme, State Bank of India will pick up 49 per cent stake in the crisis-ridden Yes Bank under a government-approved bailout plan.

Reform or perish

gainst the backdrop of recent violence over CAA, incidents at JMI , the JNU and protests in other states and most recent the Delhi riots which dominated national news; the issue of alleged police biasness, complicity and brutality has resurfaced. The performance of Delhi Police during recent violence continues to reverberate in Parliament where seven MPs of the Congress were suspended. As the enforcer of law in the national capital, Delhi Police enjoys a special privilege since it is under the administrative control of the central government under the union home ministry. The recent riots were the latest in a series of the police failures to uphold the law during the demonstrations against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, or the CAA. These failures do not come as a surprise.

They are the inevitable consequences of something which were often mentioned in the past notably by former police chiefs. The relentless attack of politicians on the autonomy of institutions, and the failure of police officers or civil servants to resist the attack has reduced a proud police force to act like a puppet of the ruling party at the centre. According to observers it was not actually lack of leadership that led to the often confused mishandling of situation by the Delhi Police. One of the main problems is that Delhi Police continues to hobble under political interference and the police chain of command does not really function because the subordinate police officers cultivate MPs and Ministers to intervene on their behalf particularly their postings. A police chief is in practise, not necessarily the most capable.

What tilts the balance is political favour that works under an arrangement of symbiotic relationship. In Delhi the former police chief became incapacitated because he had to walk a tightrope between politics and professionalism. This was a tall order and in the end, that pleased no one when things went from bad to worse. One of the most important yet wilfully neglected issue is for a police force to have a separate and independent intelligence wing and an independent investigation wing without political interference to have the most capable and efficient men to man them. This is a core recommendation for Police Reforms which came after the Janata Party government in 1977 established the National Police commission. Police reforms include fixed tenures for Director Generals of Police (DGPs) and Superintendents of Police. Also, the DGPs should have a minimum residual service to ensure continuity and stability and avoid frequent leadership changes.

However, 23 States have ignored guidelines on appointment of DGPs. As of today, 12 States have not implemented the separation of investigation and law and order wings. The intelligence agencies continue to be hemmed and staffed predominantly by police personnel and others on deputation from various government services. The Supreme Court directed the States to review the progress on police reforms in 2006 and cracked the whip on States which were reluctant to initiate reforms. There was some movement towards police reforms but thereafter everything was put on the back burner. In July 2018 the Supreme Court once again reviewed the progress of States and UTs on this front. When things go wrong, politicians cannot blame police because the message is: ‘reform or perish’.

Paul said this is the reason that “in all these things we are more than conquerors.” We are super-victors with a joy that comes from experiencing the very things which look as if they are going to overwhelm us.

Huge waves that would frighten an ordinary swimmer produce a tremendous thrill for the surfer who has ridden them. Let’s apply that to our own circumstances. The things we try to avoid and fight against— tribulation, suffering, and persecution— are the very things that produce abundant joy in us.

“We are more than conquerors through Him” “in all these things”; not in spite of them, but in the midst of them. A saint doesn’t know the joy of the Lord in spite of tribulation, but because of it. Paul said, “I am exceedingly joyful in all our tribulation” (2 Corinthians 7:4).

The undiminished radiance, which is the result of abundant joy, is not built on anything passing, but on the love of God that nothing can change. nternational Women’s Day is observed each year on 8th March to celebrate the “social, economic and political contributions” women have made to our world. It is the day to strengthen our commitment, to mobilize and to reflect on what needs to be done to create a gender equal world.

The UN Women’s theme for International Women’s Day 2020 is “Generation Equality: Realizing Women’s Rights for an Equal Future.”

The #GenerationEquality campaign is not demanding any outstanding treatment for women. It only demands fairness in the form of equal pay, equal sharing of unpaid care and domestic work, an end to sexual harassment and all forms of violence against women and girls, healthcare services that respond to their needs, and their equal participation in political life, and decision making in all areas of life; in essence, equal opportunities, incentives, encouragement, appreciation and to feel safe anywhere and everywhere.

Some of the key challenges are the lack of women in politics and decision making processes; the issue of 33% reservation for women reflects some of the core problems of gender inequality in Nagaland; and violence against women, which is often not spoken about, is on the rise in our State. Even though as per the National Crime Records Bureau’s (NCRB) report, Nagaland ranks among the lowest when it comes to the number of crimes against women, the 181-Women Helpline Nagaland and the Sakhi-One Stop Centres have received over 450 cases of violence against women since its inception. And the unfortunate reality is that women are hesitant to report. Our goal therefore, is to progress through changing the patriarchal mindset of our society.

How can one be a part of the campaign to bring change? We must realise that each and every individual possesses the power to create a gender equal world.

Let’s put our thoughts into action, be it in our homes, our workplace, our neighbourhood, and our society.

We must take inspiration from Naga women pioneers like Lt. Rano Mese Shaiza (Only Woman MP from Nagaland), Zakielhunuo Tepa (First Woman Taxi Driver), T. Amongla Aier (First Woman IPS), Tokheli Kikon (First Woman Village Council Chairperson), and most recently, Onen Nenty, a female rider who is an excellent example of a woman using her passion for a mission.

She has embarked on various trips to spread the message of women empowerment, and continues her mission, as she is set to take on an "All India Solo Bike Tour" which will be flagged off on 8th March from Delhi by Smt. Smriti Irani, Hon’ble Union Minister of Textile and Women and Child Development.

Some might say, 'Why is it that Mothers Day, Daughters Day and Women's Day are celebrated grandiosely but not Son's Day and Men's Day? On a lighter note, well, there might be few who wonder why 'wife day' is not observed. The day, earlier known as International working women's day is observed every year on the 8th of March to celebrate women and honour them with love and respect. Technically, almost all women are working women; the mothers, home makers and the sisters, etc.

The conventional assumption of working women being only those who work in workplaces other than home is now an outdated belief.

Women from the NorthEastern part of India enjoyed special privilege, which many societies can learn and replicate. If gender equality in Manipur is highlighted by women empowerment in the form of the flourishing existence of powerful women organisation in the valley, it is the prevalence of unmatched affection and respect towards women among the Hill tribes of various states that makes Women not just equal to men but even more special.

This year 2020 marks the 25th anniversary of the most visionary agenda for the empowerment of women and girls everywhere – the Fourth World Conference on Women and adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (1995). It is therefore, crucial to review the 12 key areas, flagged by the 1995 Beijing Platform for urgent action, to ensure greater equality and opportunities for women and men, girls and boys: 1) women and poverty, 2) education and training of women, 3) women and health, 4) violence against women, 5) women and armed conflict, 6) women and the economy, 7) women in power and decision making, 8) institutional mechanisms, 9) human rights of women, 10) women and media, 11) women and the environment, and 12) the girl child.

India has come a long way from the days of 'Sati' and 'dowry'. Our freedom struggle was not without women altogether; Rani of Jhansi's heroics are widely celebrated till today. Women are now treated equivalent to men in all fields including the Army; thanks to the recent Supreme court ruling which upheld women's participation in combat roles. Reservation for women in Panchayati Raj existed decades ago.

In fact, there is a state in the country which reserved seats for Women in the state legislature the highest policy making body in the state.

Several schemes like Sukanya Samridhi are implemented to benefit girl childs of the country to fill the glaring gender gap. Stringent laws have been formulated to fight sexual and domestic violence against Women.

We have reasons to believe that we've done almost everything for gender equality and women empowerment. But are those enough?

s I watched the T.V. series Band Baaga Bride, I loved the lines spoken by Sabayasachi Mukherjee, the fashion designer who uttered a very catchy phrase to one of the brides in the show, which was “to inspire you to become better versions of yourselves”. As I reflected on the above phrase and on its implication, I found it apt to pen down a few lines to all the lovely ladies out there and also to my sisters and myself and to wish my fellow ladies a very Happy Women’s Day and at the same time to urge each one of us to become better versions of ourselves.

Each individual don many roles in a lifetime and as a woman we too assume myriad roles of a daughter, a sister, a wife, a mother, an employee, an employer and the list continues. We are so caught up in the roles that we play, that we forget that there exists another world- our world too. We forget to be ourselves, we forget who we are, our dreams, our wishes and aspirations as we strive to be a perfect wife, mom, sister, employee, employer, an in-law etc attempting to fulfill the responsibilities that each role entail, but in this mad scramble, our bucket list seems to be lost and forgotten and it continues to simply remain a wish. As we celebrate Women’s Day, I would like to take this opportunity to ask YOU to celebrate yourself and to also embark on this

Do women today really feel safe, let alone empowered?

Domestic violence against women does not cease; rapes and sexual assaults continue to happen. Dowry cases are not completely history. We are well aware how the parents of Nirbhaya, the innocent women who made a mistake by believing the National Capital to be safe place for women, are waiting years for the long delayed justice to be delivered. How can we erase from our memories victims of crime against women who lost not just their lives but that of their parents too?

Many have endeavoured to find a strategy that will herald in all round improvement towards women empowerment. The importance of the idea of representation seems to supersede the other desideratum. Some people have thus mooted the idea of 50 % reservation for women in legislation ( Panchayati Raj, State Assembly and Parliament) and jobs (private and public) to ensure equality.

While the idea brings equality in representation in its literal sense, the required efforts of respect and understanding which is non-quantifiable but quintessential for lasting empowerment will be missing.

Without a sense of respect

A better self journey of finding a better version of yourself. I urge everyone including myself to do something that defines you, celebrates you, makes you alive, in short attempt to find the real you. For, I believe that it is in knowing ourselves that we can truly give.

Being a better version of ourselves does not mean spending loads of money on ourselves, to try to attain or fit some other person’s definition or standard. It simply means finding the little things that makes you who you are. It means searching deep within your soul, to find that one thing that makes you smile, that one thing that gives you the drive to be who you are.

There are no ends to comparisons and ideal types, which are forever being forged. However, let us try to be in competition with our own self and attempt to bring out a better version of ourselves, for in doing so, the possibilities become limitless.

This Women’s Day is your Independence Day- not trying is a crime!!! There will always be fears, self doubts or anxieties but let that not stop you from finding yourself or more essentially “a better you”. Ladies and girls, we are a treasure in ourselveswe are strong, beautiful and extremely special individuals; we have incredible strength to do the impossible. We need to believe in ourselves and realize that none of us are weak because we have been placed

It is not only about giving them voice in legislative bodies but allowing them to have a say in the home too.

De-coding an ‘Internal matter’!

(From previous issue) India, the largest democracy in the world believes in the rule of law that requires protection of all citizens guaranteed by the Constitution and UNHCHR. CAA has created unease amongst people who have been continuously defying the GOI as they view it as antithetical to democracy and their fundamental and constitutional rights. GOI should respond in such ways that CAA is “inclusionary” and proves its argument. We are part of the global comity of nations and shall never deflect from our obligations. It is unfortunate that institutions of governance and its mechanisms by and large have failed to deliver justice and fairness.

Over and above, narratives such as “Let Normalcy Dawn” are such an ambiguous and ambivalent inflicts more damage to the current impasse in which we live.

We keep hearing a world “normalcy” which should be restored. What is it and how to gauge “normalcy”? What is the “period” or “duration” those who say can give to concretize? These are the questions that loom at large. India is known

for its credentials of being governed by the Constitution vis-à-vis constitutional democracy. Institutions of governance that dispenses rule of law by employing instruments and mechanisms on ground levels such as the bureaucracy, police, judiciary and political machinery posits laxity, prejudice, partisanship and biases.

CAA has exposed and thus opened the Pandora box and so it is obligatory for the GOI to respond to the queries that are posed. Usage of the words and saying the current fiasco as “Internal Matter” could only be considered as an escape route which is bizarre because it is not just UNHCR, but others such as EU, US Congress, UK House of Commons, Iran, Malaysia and host of others. In recent times, India is reeling and sliding back in its image within and outside primarily in terms of its governance. To regain its credibility, transparency and accountability GOI by all means respond to the queries and should not push them under the guise of “Internal Matter”.

Jaishankar hits back at UNHRC says no country says everybody is welcome

He said it is a kind of geo-political assessment as there was a time when India was very defensive, its capabilities were less, threats were more and risks were higher.

“We adopted a policy of managing the world but kind of staying away. We can’t do that any more. We are the 5th largest economy of the world and will be the third largest. We have to engage everybody and find solutions,” he said.

“In a sense you would have geopolitical constituency out there in the world.

There will be people who understand the changes of India, who agree with it, there are people who may not agree with it. I would not mix the two. I would not mix apples and oranges.

I think these are two different processes at work. But, I will come out ahead at the end of it,” the minister said.

On opposition to the CAA and whether India has not been able to convince the world enough, he said, “There are sections of the world outside of the media.” He noted that he has engaged with governments and cited the example when in Brussels, he had 27 foreign ministers in a room to whom he was talking.

“The point we make on CAA is that it cannot be anybody’s case that a Govt or Parliament doesn’t have the right to set the terms of naturalisation or citizenship. Every government does that, every parliament does that.

“What we have tried to do is we have a large number of stateless people. We have tried to reduce the large number of stateless people we have in this country through this legislation.

That should be appreciated.

We have done it in a way that we do not create a bigger problem for ourselves.

Everybody when they look at citizenship have a context and has a criterion,” he said.

“We can’t let governance challengers go unaddressed. It’s not the mindset of this government to just let important issues pass without decisively addressing them, which should have been addressed earlier.

When you address that you disturb the status quo.

“People have proclaimed themselves of political correctness and arbiters of public policy, obviously be get ruffled. Obviously there will be public debates

and those debates are legitimate and are happening in India as well as outside,” the minister noted.

The External Affairs Minister said technology has always been the driver of global politics and never more so than now.

“Its promise, especially for a society for India with a natural interest in leapfrogging, is enormous. We are seeing that unfold most of all in the digital domain.

“As we all know, this has created its own issues of data protection and data security. But from the vantage point of foreign policy, there are some aspects that need greater deliberation as a national approach,” he said.

“In a world that is more narrowly economic, trade negotiations have acquired a higher profile in international affairs. Much of that arises from the behaviour of America, the strategy of China, the approach of Japan and the focus of Europe. As a nation that is still to integrate itself into global supply chains, develop its infrastructure and scale up its capabilities, these are not easy times.

Jaishankar said obviously in a globalised world, no economy can be an island unto itself. “But the exercise of engagement – and its terms – must be very objectively assessed. Trade outcomes must be primarily justified by trade calculations, not by political correctness. Their gains must be visible, probable and practical; not just hypothetical scenarios,” he said.

BHOPAL, MAR 7 (AGENCIES): In yet another twist in the ongoing political drama in Madhya Pradesh, ‘missing’ independent MLA Surendra Singh Shera returned to Bhopal on Saturday, making a cryptic announcement that he would be a minister in the Kamal Nath cabinet before Holi on March 10.

Shera returned to the state after having spent four days in Bengaluru, which he claimed was a personal visit.

Three other MLAs -- Hardeep Singh Dang, Raghuraj Kansana and Bisahulal Singh -- have been missing from the state, with the ruling Congress alleging that the BJP “abducted” them and took them to Karnataka. The latter has refuted the claim.

Speaking to reporters at the airport, Shera denied that he had been abducted and refuted reports of an alleged turmoil in the Kamal Nath government.

He arrived at the Raja Bhoj Airport from New Delhi and was received by the state’s Public Relations minister PC Sharma.

Though he refuted claims of being abducted, Shera had, in a video message on Friday, alleged that he was stopped by unidentified men twice on his way to the airport which eventually led him to miss his flight scheduled for the day.

Govt lifts 48-hr ban on 2 news channels

NEW DELHI, MAR 7 (PTI): The government on Saturday revoked a 48-hour ban on two leading Malayalam news channels hours after imposing the punitive measure on separate charges of being critical of the RSS, Delhi Police and siding with one community while covering last month’s violence in the national capital.

It was not immediately clear whether widespread criticism of the ban on Asianet News and Media One channels prompted the government to withdraw the restrictions.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar told reporters in Pune that Prime Minister

Narendra Modi expressed concern over the entire issue, adding the government supports press freedom.

Without going into specifics, Javadekar said he would look into the matter and take “essential steps” if any wrongdoing is found.

“I will definitely go into the details and take essential steps if there is any wrongdoing. But let me also tell you that everybody should accept that there has to be responsible freedom,” he said.

The channels were suspended for 48 hours beginning 7:30 PM on Friday over their coverage of the communal violence in Delhi.

The official orders said that

the channels covered events of February 25 in a manner that “highlighted the attack on places of worship and siding towards a particular community”.

The ban on Asianet News was lifted at 1.30 am, while the ban on Media One was lifted at 9.30 am on Saturday, a source in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting told PTI. In its order against Media On, the ministry said the channel questioned the RSS and accused Delhi Police of inaction. The Congress and Left parties came down hard on the government for the punitive action, calling the clampdown “stifling of media freedom”.

NEW DELHI, MAR 7 (PTI): No country in the world says everybody is welcome, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Saturday, hitting out at those criticising India over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. Jaishankar flayed the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for its criticism on the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, saying its director had been wrong earlier too and one should look at the UN body’s past record on handling the Kashmir issue.

“We have tried to reduce the number of stateless people through this legislation. That should be appreciated,” he said when asked about the CAA at the ET Global Business Summit.

“We have done it in a way that we do not create a bigger problem for ourselves.”

“Everybody when they look at citizenship has a context and has a criterion.

Show me a country in the world which says everybody in the world is welcome.

Nobody does that. Look at America. Look at the Europeans. I can give you example of every European country. There is some social criterion,” he noted.

The external affairs minister said moving out of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) was in the interest of India’s business.

New Delhi, Mar 7 (PTI): The State Bank of India (SBI) on Saturday announced it will pick up a 49 per cent stake in Yes Bank for Rs 2,450 crore and clarified that all the deposits and liabilities of the reconstructed bank will continue in the “same manner”. The crisis-hit Yes Bank, which failed to garner investor support in raising capital, was on Thursday superseded by a Reserve Bank appointed administrator, in consultation with the central government, and customers have been restricted with a withdrawal cap of Rs 50,000 only till April 3.

Mumbai, Mar 7 (PTI): Budget carrier IndiGo on Saturday announced waiving of cancellation and rescheduling charges on flight bookings till March 31 due to the situation arising out of the coronavirus outbreak. The cancellation fee has been waived off on existing and new domestic and international bookings made between March 12 and March 31, IndiGo said in a statement.

Also, there will be no fee charged for date change for flights booked between March 12 to March 31, it said. The waiver, however, comes with a rider. “We understand that some passengers are concerned about committing to travel, given the current coronavirus issue. To take this anxiety away and make their travel hassel-free, we are waiving our normal change fee on all travel during the next two weeks and for all new bookings made in that period,” IndiGo Chief Commercial Officer William Boulter said in the statement.

This will enable IndiGo fliers to book their flights at “affordable” fares with flexibility of rescheduling without change fee, if needed, he said.

KABUL, MAR 7 (IANS): Afghan President Ashraf Ghani on Saturday again refused to accept the release of thousands of Taliban prisoners as a precondition for talks with the militant group, in a move that was likely to delay intra-Afghan peace negotiations set for March 10 Addressing the country’s Parliament, Ghani said the prisoner release arrangement in the deal between the US and the Taliban was untimely and cannot be a condition for beginning intra-Afghan negotiations, reports Efe news. “We call the Taliban’s request for the release of 5,000 prisoners as premature to the beginning of the negotiations,” Ghani said in the televised address.

“As President of Afghanistan, I don’t like to

have a Taliban prisoner.

But their release should be based on a transparent process and a clear mechanism.”

He said there was a need for a guarantee and the Afghans must be ensured that the Taliban, after the release of their leaders, would implement “a full ceasefire” and that they won’t return to the battlefield.

“A nationwide ceasefire is the demand of every citizen,” he said.

The President had publicly turned down the plan of prisoner swap set out in the landmark USTaliban deal signed on February 29 in Doha, aimed at beginning intra-Afghan talks and ending decades of the Afghan war.

Panaji, Mar 7 (Agencies): Chennaiyin entered the final of the 2019-20 Indian Super League (ISL) with a 6-5 aggregate win against FC Goa in the two-legged semi-final tie. FC Goa registered a 4-2 win in the second leg at the Fatorda Stadium on Saturday but Chennaiyin stood firm to secure their place in the final.

A Lucian Goain own goal in the 10th minute and Mourtada Fall making it 2-0 in the 28th minute kept Goa’s hopes alive for a come-back from the 4-1 first-leg defeat but of which were dainted by LallianzualaChhangte (52’) and NerijusValskis (59’) in the second half. The tie was kept interesting with EduBedia (81’) and Fall (83’) finding

KOHIMA, MAR 7 (NPN): Hectic preparations are going on at Khouchiezhie (local ground) Kohima to host the 27th Nagaland Wrestling Association Championship and first U-16 Naga Wrestling 2020 on March 10 and 11.

More than 20,000 wrestling lovers are expected to witness the mega wrestling event. The championship will be managed

by Chakhesang Baptist Church, Kohima.

Neivikuolie Khatsu, president, NWA said that the stage was all set for the championship. The president has invited all former NWA officials, former champions to attend mega event.

March 10 will witness the senior category bouts while the U-16 category championship will be held

on March 11.

Altogether, 64 wrestlers 18 each from Angami Sports Association, Chakhesang Wrestling Association and Zeliang Wrestling Association) will vie for the coveted title.

The champion will receive a cash prize of Rs.3 lakh along with Lt. Velahu Puro Memorial Trophy and Rs.30,000 while the first runner-up with will pocket Rs.2 lakh. The third and the fourth position will Rs. 1 lakhs and Rs. 80,000 respectively. Quarter finalists will get Rs.10,000 each.

In the U-16 Naga wrestling championship, 36 wrestlers (12 each from the three units) will vie for the title.

The champion in junior category will get Rs.50,000, while the second, third and four th will receive Rs.30,000,

Rs.20,000 and Rs.15,000 respectively.

The association has also informed that a pay per view live-telecast facility will be made available at https://northeastcornerstonetv.in/ for outstation viewers.

The official briefing will be held on March 9 at 12:00 noon and the association has requested the officials of the championship to attend the briefing without fail.

The tickets for donors are priced at Rs.3,000, chair (Front Row) – Rs.1,000, Chair (Back Row) – Rs.500 and Gallery – Rs.100. The tickets will be valid for both day.
