‘International Women’s Day’ celebrated across the state

DIMAPUR: Various institutions organised programmes and initiatives to commemorate international women’s day (IWD) under the theme for 2020, “I am generation equality: realising women’s rights”. CMA Phek: Chakhesang Mothers’ Association (CMA) in collaboration with the District Administration, Phek and Phek District Legal Services Authority (PDLSA) observed the day at Badminton Stadium, Phek town on March 7. A press release from CMA Phek stated that, minister of Planning & Coordination, Land Revenue and Parliamentary Affairs, Neiba Kronu in his address challenged the Chakhesang mothers to be loving & caring mothers for a harmonious and progressive society. He appealed the mothers to be uniting factor of the community and urged them to aim for well being and progress of the society. Stating that good roads and electricity were essential for the process of development, he urged upon the people to cooperate with the government for proper execution of such projects in the state. Stating that road connectivity and waterway to Eastern side of Myanmar will greatly boost the state’s economy, Kronu informed that he was planning to take up the proposal with the government. Earlier, Kronu unveiled the foundation stone of CMA building plot at Zion colony, Phek. Also speaking on the occasion as the guest of honour, Kuzholuzo (Azo) Nienu, MLA stressed on the importance of women’s role in the global arena & urged the womenfolk to cohesively work with broader vision for a better society. She urged all to take one resolution today, to take care of the girl child/daughter (or sisters) and give them equal opportunities with as much love and respect as is done for sons (or brothers). NSWC Kohima: International Women’s Day (IWD) conclave an initiative of Nagaland State Wo m e n C o m m i s s i o n (NSWC) in collaboration with Nagaland College Principal Association was held at Hotel Vivor Kohima on Saturday. Chairperson NSCW, Khrienuo Tachü in her key note said many Naga women were quite empowered in a non-aggressive way, enabled particularly through quality education. However, she said inspite of the high literacy rate in Nagaland, that empowering factor was yet to come to the fore. She remarked that wholesome empowerment of women was lacking in Nagaland in spite of numerous programmes and therefore, this year’s emphasis was looking at quality education as an empowering tool for complementary walk of men and women towards progressive development of society. She informed that according to 2011 census, the sex ratio in the state of Nagaland is 931 females per 1000 males and the female literacy rate of Nagaland is 76.11 percent as per 2011 census, which is above the national average. She said as per 2019 report, Nagaland state is the lowest crime rate against women and several indexes of gender equality and development where the state is at par with other performing states. However, she said the research findings in reality revealed that the
state is lagging behind in qualitative and wholesome living. HoD of Higher Education Dr. Apeni Lotha in her address highlighted many provisions for women under UGC in higher education. She emphasised the need to uplift the women education especially in the remote places. Principal Japfü Christian College Dr. Visakhonu Hibo in her address said the key words in the new education policy (NEP) envisions education system that contributes directly to transforming the country into sustainable, equitable and vibrant knowledge society by providing high quality education to all. Dr. Chubatola Aier in her address as one of the panellists said men and women should be given equal education facilities to develop our society together. Dr. Vizovol Mekro, another panellists said higher education has a primary role to play in building knowledge based economy providing sustainable employment opportunities and ensuring a better standard of living to the existing upcoming generation. Thingujam Sharatchandra Singh, a panellist in his address said that everyone needed to ponder upon why the graduate students in the state were not employable and need to revisit the education system in the state. Programme was chaired by Dr. Lily Sema general secretary NCPA, prayer by Chongliu member NSCW, special song presented by Japfü Christian College staff choir Kigwema and concluding remark given by Dr. P.S. NHS: Namghar High School (NHS), Dimapur observed IWD on March 7 at the school premises with the activities like thought of the day, group song on women empowerment by boys of classes 8, 9 and 10 followed by a speech under IWD 2020 theme by Nitai Acharjee, senior teacher. SJS: St. John’s School (SJS), Diphupar ‘B’ celebrated IWD on March 7, wherein school also acknowledged and honoured the female teachers. The theme was elucidated by headmaster, Johny Abraham. A press release from SJS stated that a play called “gender inequality in the family” was enacted by class 10 students, while Wonjano delivered a speech where she maintained that “women should help other women obliterate stereotypes and taboos placed by the society”. Meanwhile, the programme was initiated by male teachers along with students with various items like dance, songs and skit. IAP Nagaland branch: IAP Nagaland branch in collaboration with Alkem Laboratories Ltd along with guest dietician Zuthonglo (NMHRC) conducted a health camp with 15th NAP (IR) Mahila Battalion at Chumukedima on March 7.

DIMAPUR: As part of the Green Team initiative to “make a difference today”, the team along with students (boys) of the 2nd and 4th semester Political Science department, Sazolie College, Jotsoma conducted
a cleanliness drive in and around Vira Lozi, between Kohima-Jotsoma road on March 7. A press release from the Green Team stated that, during the first day drive out of the 22 days initiative, vol-
unteers’ collected garbage, where more than 90% of thrash were alcohol bottles and mineral bottles. The free volunteer community service aimed at making Kohima a step cleaner. It informed that Green Team has
been taking up initiative to clean Kohima town through awareness and sensitization campaigns for over a year now. Through this initiative, the team wants to engage citizens for a cleaner Kohima. For this initiative, the team will be collaborating with different colleges around Kohima, church youth bodies and different organisations. Green Team appealed the public to take back their thrash and refrain from littering such areas which could lead to a man-made environmental disaster. The team said that such irresponsible disposals of thrash by the people who hang around in that specific area were destroying nature by such reckless behaviour.
