KOHIMA, MAR 8 (NPN): Nagaland joined rest of the world in celebrating International Women’s Day on Monday. On the occasion, Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSCW) chairpersons Khrienuo Tachü urged the State government to introduce Acquired Property Bill in Nagaland Legislative Assembly. Tachü explained that NSCW’s standpoint was clear that the issue was not about ancestral property and clarified that the commission did not seek to interfere in private decisions of parents regarding acquired property as the sole decision lay on them. She also pointed out that as a statutory body, NSCW sought to intervene in specific cases where parents having no sons and only daughters were faced with the issue of inheritance of acquired property.

During the event, jointly organised by Nagaland State Commission for Women, Nagaland State Social Welfare Board and State Resource Centre for Women on the theme “Women in Leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID 19 World” at Hotel Vivor here, five women achievers were given NSCW Awards 2021. The five women achievers included Naga Mothers’ Association president Abei-u Meru, Kohima chief medical officer Dr Vezokholu Theyo, Nagaland College Principals’ Association president and Japfu Christian College, Kigwema principal Dr Visakhonü, Kohima Chang Baptist Church pastor S Anungla, and officer

in-charge of women cell police station, Dimapur, inspector Rose Yanthan. Speaking on the occasion as guest of honour, chief secretary J Alam observed that the biggest challenge for women began at home and stressed that the wives toiling hard for their homes should be recognised as “homemakers”. He felt that the inspiring and success stories of the five women should be shared not only within Nagaland but outside as they were about “sacrifice and resilience”. As social change often came in conflict with customs and traditions, he said “we” must know how to go with the change without disrupting social fabric.

Mentioning that women had played a leadership role during the pandemic, he added that the entire situation would have been more difficult to handle without the participation of women. Congratulating the awardees, the chief secretary assured to look into the appeal of NSCW to introduce Acquired Property Bill in Nagaland Legislative Assembly. In her keynote address, NSCW chairperson Khrienuo Tachü said the common denominator in life stories of all Naga women leaders and path-breakers, both past and present, was their resilience and great fortitude amid challenges and set(Cont’d on p-5) backs.

IMA cautions Centre on ‘end of pandemic remark’ NEW DELHI, MAR 8 (PTI): The Indian Medical Association on Monday cautioned against “unauthorised political statements”, saying that they invoke a “false sense of security”. The statement by the doctors’ body came a day after Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said that India was “in the end game of the pandemic”. Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain had also said that the coronavirus was entering the “endemic phase” in the national Capital. A pandemic is the spread of a disease beyond a country’s borders, across a continent, or around the world. An endemic is the usual persistence of an infectious disease in a region that affects a large part of

On Monday, the Indian Medical Association, said it was incorrect to make these claims at this stage. “It is painful to note the discussion on endemic Vs pandemic status of diseases is echoing in the political corridors, however it ought to be substantiated by scientific evidence by the World Health Organisation or ICMR only,” the medical body said. The medical body, instead, appealed to the public to adhere to Covid19 norms. “Unauthorised political statements shall

invoke a false sense of security and hence, the Indian Medical Association, whose 740 frontline warriors lost their life in this war against the coronavirus, appeals to all our fellow citizens to be vigilant on wearing mask, physical distancing and hygiene and take vaccination to get yourself immunity and altruistic health contribution for herd immunity,” the statement said. The IMA pointed out that the mutated strains of the coronavirus in the United Kingdom, South Africa and Brazil were “still haunting us”. The doctors’

LPG rates have increased and prices of petroleum products have gone up. Lok Sabha was adjourned at 5.15pm till 7pm amid protests by the opposition over rising fuel prices. DIMAPUR: Kiphire Area Students’ Union (KASU) has expressed resentment over the slow progress of work on auditorium hall and renovation of Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) Kiphire building even after two years. The union claimed that the work order was issued on March 4, 2019 and the time frame for completion was 18 months from the date of issue of work order. In a press statement, KASU president, Trongdiba C Sangtam and general secretary, Tarsesh alleged that Kiphire has been selected as Aspiration district as it lacked behind in many development fronts particularly in Education sector.

“Kiphire being an aspiration district, priority should be given to any government developmental work which is the aspiration of the people”, the union stated. It thanked the government for allotting work on construction of Auditorium and renovation of the school building sanctioned under Ministry of Tribal Affairs. However, the union claimed that the contractors with their irresponsibility have “only attempt to murder the future of the students and public in general”.

KASU stated that if the renovation was not carried out at the earliest, it will endanger the life of students and faculty members, as the “building was on the verge of collapse”. Therefore, the union appealed to the competent authority to strictly instruct the contractors for execution of the permitted work within a time frame period or re-tender the work order to some sincere and responsible persons for the upliftment of students’ community and public in general.

women in BJP-ruled states? What is the situation in Modi’s favourite Gujarat? “The prime minister has named a stadium after him. He has put his photographs on COVID-19 vaccination certificates. “Had that been the case, they wouldn’t have been able to move around freely at night.” Hitting out at the PM, Banerjee also said that Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah should shift focus on BJP- ruled states, including ‘model state’ Gujarat, “where, media reports suggest, four rapes and two killings have been recorded every day over the past two years.” The TMC rally, which commenced in College Square area in central Kolkata, concluded near Dorina crossing, five kilometres away. Senior party leaders Chandrima Bhattacharyaa and Mala Roy joined the march. Among others, actresses and now TMC candidates June Maliya, Saayoni Ghosh and Sayantika Banerjee were also seen taking part in the rally.

She said Naga women should realise their inner strength, adding that they were richly endowed with to become efficient. Noting that times were changing and women were emerging as leaders

in various fields, Tachü said there Naga society should introspect on women attaining leadership positions in the political arena and give them more space in decision-making, both at the local and the State levels. The NSCW chairperson said Naga mothers, daughters and sisters looked to the future with great hope and optimism as it was a matter of pride for the State to have many Naga women in leadership positions, who earned their positions by their own sweat and calibre, and because of which the commission had constituted the Achievement Award. Earlier, in her introductory remark, social welfare commissioner & secretary and NSSWB administrator Sarah R Ritse said the pandemic had made Nagas realize that women have a crucial role to play as heads of departments and as homemakers. She commented that the role of strongly dedicated women frontline workers in various services, who went about their duties beyond their areas of comfort by reaching out

Karnataka Cong boycotts CM Yediyurappa’s Budget speech BENGALURU, MAR 8 (IANS): Opposition Karnataka Congress leaders protested against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led state government by wearing black armbands during the Budget speech by Chief Minister B. S. Yediyurappa on Monday. The Congress alleged that with a case of ‘sexual exploitation’ coming to light last week involving Karnataka Water Resources Minister, Ramesh Jarkiholi, more than six cabinet ministers in the Yediyurappa’s government have approached the court seeking restrain orders fearing that such an objectionable CD might come to light. The moment Yediyurappa rose to present the state Budget in the assembly, Leader of the Opposition Siddaramaiah opposed it and some Congress leaders trooped into the well of the House wearing black armbands. Siddaramaiah alleged that the ruling BJP has lost the moral right to present the Budget on International Women’s Day on Monday. “With women being preyed upon by none other than the ruling party’s minister, how can the opposition keep quiet to allow

such injustice meted out to women. In order to uphold the dignity of women and strong opposition to a minister getting caught in a sex scandal, the Congress is boycotting the Budget,” Siddaramaiah said.

to targeted groups without letting this pandemic affect them, was praiseworthy. She also highlighted some women-related schemes and activities undertaken by the board. Ritse claimed that One Stop Centre and Beti Bachao Beti Padhao schemes were uniquely designed by the Union ministry of women & child development and funds were directly transferred by the ministry to the respective deputy commissioners (DCs) and not through the department. She said the State social welfare department monitored, guided, evaluated and liaised between the ministry and the DCs for its proper implementation through SRCW. She appealed to all stakeholders to encourage active community participation by working hand in hand with the DCs to take these schemes forward so that the districts could benefit from them. Director general of police and a host of other senior government officials, women tribal representatives and others attended the programme.

NDPP: Meanwhile, NDPP in a separate statement praised God Almighty for having guided and blessed the PDA government thus far, besides expressing its gratitude to various tribal hohos, CSOs, NGOs and citizens of Nagaland for their immense support without which, the party contended, the government would not have managed to run the affairs of the State smoothly last three years. The party also extend its profound gratitude to alliance partners BJP and the Independent MLA for their unwavering support in taking forward the visions and commitments of the PDA government. Stating that it was its firm belief that this partnership would only grow from strength to strength and continue to carry forward the dreams and aspirations of the people, NDPP also commended and lauded the PDA gov-

BHOPAL, MAR 8 (PTI): The Madhya Pradesh Assembly on Monday passed by voice vote a bill that checks religious conversions through marriage or by any other fraudulent means. The bill earlier replaced the ordinance, cleared by the cabinet in December and promulgated in January, which had provisions of 10 years imprisonment in some cases and heftyfine for violators. On March 1, state Home Minister Narottam Mishra presented the Madhya Pradesh Freedom of Religion Bill 2021 in the

House. After a discussion on the bill, it was passed by voice vote in the Assembly on Monday. Governor Anandiben Patel on January 9 gave assent to the Madhya Pradesh Freedom of Religion Ordinance, 2020, which penalised religious conversions through fraudulent means, including those for the sake of marriage. The ordinance penalised religious conversions by misrepresentation, allurement, use of threat of force, undue influence, coercion, marriage or by any other fraudulent means. Last month, Home Minister Mishra had said as many as 23 cases were registered under the ordinance within a month of it coming into force. He had said the highest number of seven cases were reported in the Bhopal division, followed by five in Indore, four each in Jabalpur and Rewa, and three in the Gwalior division.

KO L K AT A , M A R 8 (IANS): Barely a few weeks ahead of the high-voltage Assembly polls in West Bengal, Trinamool Congress leader Sarala Murmu, who had received a ticket for the upcoming elections last week, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday. Besides Murmu, fourtime Trinamool MLA from Satgachhia Sonali Guha, sitting Singur MLA Rabindranath Bhattacharya, five-time outgoing MLA from Shibpur Jatu Lahiri and former India footballer and one time MLA from Basirhat Dakshin, Dipendu Biswas, also joined the saffron camp. Apart from Murmu, the other four Trinamool leaders were denied tickets to contest the elections. The Trinamool leaders joined the BJP in the presence of the party’s state unit chief Dilip Ghosh and other leaders like Suvendu Adhikari and Mukul Roy on Monday afternoon. Earlier, the ruling Trinamool Congress had hurriedly withdrew Murmu’s name from the candidates’ list, citing her ill health as the reason for making the change.

Naga political issue, besides the Naga political groups engaged in the peace process with the Government of India under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a peaceful resolution that would be inclusive and honourable to all sections of Naga society. He assured that BJP Nagaland unit would continue to work tirelessly in fulfilling the government’s and the party’s commitments to the people. He gave a clarion call to everyone to reap benefits of the BJP-led NDA government’s mantra “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas” (together with all, development for all, trust of all) so that Nagaland and its people could scale greater heights in all parameters of good governance and development of livelihood assets in the days ahead.

In those days, he said a person’s social status was determined by wielding machetes and spears, an area which was dominated by men, while women were confined mostly to household responsibilities. However, with the change in time, advisor said olden practices were merely stories now and men have become lazy and dependent on women not just in household chores but even in looking after a family. Further, he said that women were the greatest gift to mankind and that God had placed in them a special kind of love, which had the ability to melt even the hardest of hearts in men. Khing pointed out that department of women resource development was the brainchild of chief minister Neiphiu Rio, who formulated the need for the same after observing how women were unable to perform to the full capacity due to lack of opportunities. He said that the department had started various initiatives solely for the uplift of women in various fields. Khing asserted that for a society to move forward it was crucial that womenfolk were moving ahead.

On the occasion, advisor gave away the Mykifest awards to three groups and five individuals. The awardees in the group category were Runway Nagaland (Dimapur), North East Network Nagaland and Apparels & Accessories Production Team (TLI Project) under WRD. While the individual category awardees included Vimenuo Belho, Iboli Zhimo, Vikengunu Kera Fatima, Mezhüheno and Phaoniu Shio. Delivering the keynote address, WRD commissioner & secretary Anenla T Sato said that the MykiFest was conceptualized to provide an encouraging platform for a wide category of women. She also said that MykiFest Awards was instituted to recognize and emphasize the activities of NGOs and other women groups that have been working towards the uplift of women in the State. Earlier, Union Baptist Church assistant pastor (children’s ministry), Dziesengunuo Chadi, offered invocation and DGP band member, Esther Dialiam presented a special song. Additional director & HoD, WRD, Vilone Sakhrie proposed the vote of thanks and the programme was compèred by Asangla.

NDPP extended its fullest support to the PDA in carrying forward the future policies and programmes of the government with the hope and belief that the visions and commitments of the alliance would continue beyond the present tenure. The party said it stood firm in its commitment to provide development and progress to the people in consonance with its slogan “development for all; together with all!”

It said that Sumis of Kiphire had been inhabiting the district much prior to 1957 when NEFA was merged with Naga Hills district to create Nagaland state. Apart from being economically and educationally backward, KDTSSU said the Sumis of Kiphire had been deprived of opportunity as they were under the “Un-administrated Area” in the erstwhile NEFA. However, the union said that the government of Nagaland under the leadership of chief minister Neiphiu Rio after recognizing the unique history had granted 2% reservation to the Sumis of Kiphire. Stating that it had no interest in meddling in the demand for inclusion of Kukis of Peren under reservation policy, the KTDSSU has, therefore, urged KIN to avoid meddling in the issue of others and address their problems basing on the facts and rights of their demand.

KOLKATA, MAR 8 (PTI): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for “spreading lies and canards” against the TMC government, and said voters, this time, would witness ‘Didi versus BJP’ fight in all 294 constituencies of the pollbound state. Taking a dig at Modi over inclusion of his picture in COVID-19 vaccination certificates, she said the “day wasn’t far when the country will be named after him”.Asserting that she will return to power for the third consecutive time in Bengal, the feisty TMC boss said, “The fight is between me and the BJP in all 294 seats.” “They (BJP leaders) will come to Bengal only during elections and spread canards and lies. Bitter and Bloody Battle

W

hether it is the ‘Battle Royal for Bengal’, “Bloody Battle for Bengal’ or the “Bitter Battle for Bengal’; the forthcoming assembly election in west Bengal, is certainly the most bitterly fought in recent times as BJP has unleashed every ammunition in its huge and awesome armoury to defeat the ruling TMC. The TMC faces a formidable foe in the BJP and Mamata Banerjee is being put to her toughest test of her political career with the BJP outdoing her party in every department of the game. For the BJP, winning Bengal will cement its presence throughout east India and could also be a state where it can reap political dividends. West Bengal was 42 Lok Sabha seats and 16 Rajya Sabha seats and therefore, the state is a prime target for 2024. For the Trinamool the election is an existential battle and so Mamata is determined to fight back like the Bengal Tigress. Even for the BJP, the Bengal election is a prestigious battle and has been planning for the battle royal for over five years. Assembly elections will be held from March 27 to April 29 and spread over eight phases. The Election Commission of India has divided election into eight phases for 294 seats while in Tamil Nadu election for 234 seats will be a single phase, while for Assam with 126 seats, election will be in three phases.Even years ahead of the declaration of assembly elections, Mamata has been hit by desertions of senior party leaders engineered by the BJP. More are deserting the TMC as electioneering has hit top gear. It is an existential election for all parties in the fray in West Bengal. A defeat will be a major political setback, especially for the TMC including the BJP, which has thrown in everything, even using central probe agencies against TMC leaders. Defeat is not an option and whoever loses in Bengal will certainly pay a heavy price. For the BJP, Bengal is ripe for the taking as the ruling TMC faces an anti-incumbency factor. Though BJP has no popular leader who can match Mamata, it has pitched Modi. Therefore, the battle in Bengal is turning out to be a repeat of the BJP strategy- pit Modi against a rival incumbent. That is why the 2021 election is like no other election held in the state till now. Both TMC and BJP realizes the importance of 2021 and how high the stakes are. Mamata Banerjee had said in earlier campaigns, that it is ‘now or never’ and that she will fight like the Bengal tiger. The 2021 Bengal election is also important because the idea of a liberal, secular, plural and federal India pitted against the idea of a strong, unitary and even authoritarian Rashtra. Opposition parties from various states are backing the Trinamool and their leaders will also campaign in Bengal. The Left and the Congress have forged an alliance making the Bengal election a three-cornered contest. The division of votes is going to benefit the BJP but there are also indications that traditional Congress and Left supporters will largely vote for TMC. Many speculate that the poll outcome will be a hung house while others believe the TMC could just scrape through. In such a scenario, the BJP could unleash its ‘Operation Lotus’ to wean away rival party MLAs or create a split so as to come to power as it did in other states.

DailyDevotion The Surrendered Life I have been crucified with Christ… —Galatians 2:20 To become one with Jesus Christ, a person must be willing not only to give up sin, but also to surrender his whole way of looking at things. Being born again by the Spirit of God means that we must first be willing to let go before we can grasp something else. The first thing we must surrender is all of our pretense or deceit. What our Lord wants us to present to Him is not our goodness, honesty, or our efforts to do better, but real solid sin. Actually, that is all He can take from us. And what He gives us in exchange for our sin is real solid righteousness. But we must surrender all pretense that we are anything, and give up all our claims of even being worthy of God’s consideration. Once we have done that, the Spirit of God will show us what we need to surrender next. Along each step of this process, we will have to give up our claims to our rights to ourselves. Are we willing to surrender our grasp on all that we possess, our desires, and everything else in our lives? Are we ready to be identified with the death of Jesus Christ? We will suffer a sharp painful disillusionment before we fully surrender. When people really see themselves as the Lord sees them, it is not the terribly offensive sins of the flesh that shock them, but the awful nature of the pride of their own hearts opposing Jesus Christ. When they see themselves in the light of the Lord, the shame, horror, and desperate conviction hit home for them. If you are faced with the question of whether or not to surrender, make a determination to go on through the crisis, surrendering all that you have and all that you are to Him. And God will then equip you to do all that He requires of you.

s the world marks International Women’s Day in the midst of a global pandemic, one stark fact is clear: the COVID-19 crisis has a woman’s face. The pandemic is worsening already deep inequalities facing women and girls, erasing years of progress towards gender equality. Women are more likely to work in sectors hardest hit by the pandemic. Most essential frontline workers are women — many from racially and ethnically marginalized groups and at the bottom of the economic ladder. Women are 24 per cent more vulnerable to losing their jobs and suffering steeper falls in income. The gender pay gap, already high, has widened, including in the health sector. Unpaid care has increased dramatically owing to stay-

God promised Adam to provide a help-met. Gen. 2:18. God therefore made man and woman, a pair, a scissors, missing of one blade of scissors would be nothing for another blade of scissors. The birth right of a “woman-created equal to man” is inheritances from God, and is a right from creation from God. “This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh” said Adam. Gen.2:23. “…and they shall be one flesh” Gen 2:24 which means man and woman are equal. “Where-

at-home orders and school and childcare closures. Millions of girls may never return to school. Mothers – especially single mothers – have faced acute adversity and anxiety. The pandemic has also sparked a parallel epidemic of violence against women worldwide, with skyrocketing domestic abuse, trafficking, sexual exploitation and child marriage. Meanwhile, even though women represent the majority of health care workers, a recent study found that only 3.5 per cent of COVID-19 task forces had equal numbers of men and women. ments are more enduring. Yet, women make up a mere quarter of national legislators worldwide, a third of local government members, and just one fifth of cabinet ministers. On the current trajectory, gender parity will not be reached in national legislatures before 2063. Parity among Heads of Government would take well over a century. A better future depends on addressing this power imbalance. Women have an equal right to speak with authority on the decisions that affect their lives. I am proud to have achieved gender parity among the leadership of the United Nations. Pandemic recovery is our chance to chart a new and equal path. Support and stimulus packages must target women and girls specifically, including through

scaled up investment in care infrastructure. The formal economy only functions because it is subsidized by women’s unpaid care work. As we recover from this crisis, we must chart a path to an inclusive, green and resilient future. I call on all leaders to put in place six key building blocks: First, ensure equal representation– from company boards to parliaments, from higher education to public institutions -- through special measures and quotas. Second, invest significantly in the care economy and social protection, and redefine Gross Domestic Product to make work in the home visible and counted. Third, remove barriers to women’s full inclusion in the economy, including through access to the labour market, property rights and

God knowingly created woman weaker than man, because He wants woman the best HELPMET for man. It is because woman enjoys more rights and privileges than man. Woman has bundle of rights and privileges and these are: - she is wife, she is mother, she is driver of the home, she is nurse, she is housekeeper, she is shopper, she is wage earner, she is teacher, she is an evangelist/missionary, washing expert and minister of a home. Can anybody snatch away these titles from woman? The answer is “none”.

Let us turn to some bible women, Ruth, Esther and Miriam. Ruth was the queen of king Ahasuerus. When the king passed a degree to kill all the Jews all over his kingdom, Esther stood by the side of the Jews. She was a politician, a lawyer, defender of the Jews. She pleaded to save the life of the Jews and her husband, and so the king Ahasuerus obeyed her request. Esther is called the “Liberator of Israelites” Miriam was the priest of Moses and Aaron. It was she who agreed to watch the baby Moses bushes and suggested her mother as his nurse. In celebrating the crossing of the Red sea, Miriam the Prophetess (Ex.15:20-21) led the

women in music, dancing and singing in praise of the Lord. In the Middle Ages Florence Nightingale was the greatest of nurse and mother of Red Sea Cross Organisation. Greek and Roman women were treated as servant up to 1000 BC, but it is a forgotten story now, Buddhism and Jainism refused woman to admit them in religion. Hindu women were subjugated, remarriage after the death of her husband was not allowed. Sati prevailed during the 18th Century which followed the fall of Mughul Empire. However, emancipation of women started as early as 15th Century. Razia Begum, Chandbidi etc were admitted in administration. Women’s Indian As-

sociation was founded in 1917 and Ms Annie Besant, thousand of Indian women took part in the Indian independence under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi. All Indian Conference 1926 had implemented the charter of women demands. Mrs. Muthulakshmi Reddy was elected as a member of Madras Legislative Council in 1926. The “Lady Dufferin Funf ” was founded and financed education of women as Doctors, nurses, midwives etc and established Lady Hardinge Medical College in New Delhi. After the passing of Govt. Fifth, each country should enact an emergency response plan to address violence against women and girls, and follow through with funding, policies, and political will to end this scourge. Sixth, shift mindsets, raise public awareness and call out systemic bias. The world has an opportunity to leave behind generations of entrenched and systemic discrimination. nomics, Sociology, Science, Mathematics and so women are equally qualified with men. After Indian Independent in 1947, women and man came into a stage of equal rights and privileges in many aspects. In America Women’s emancipation was first started in 20th century. In England the women struggled for equal rights in voting in election. In 1928 they have succeeded and introduced Universal Franchise in England. The final target of women folk is motherhood. It is therefore not to worship the mothers, but recognized them as best assets for all of us and a priceless gift of God for all humanity. Obang Ozukum, Aoyimkum, Dimapur

How much land does a Naga need?

“S

ix feet from his head to his heels was all he needed,” answers Tolstoy to his own question posed in the title of his short-story How much land does a man need? His question seems pertinent now more than ever in the present Naga context, especially considering the Naga’s close association with their land being ingrained within the very fabric of their tribal system. With the recent withdrawal of the no-objection certificate (NOC) by the Chi village council (CVC) citing issues of land disputes with the landowners, the prospect for the setting up of the medical college in Mon seems to be coming to a standstill. The incident perhaps brings to light a toxic relationship that Nagas harbor towards their land, which often builds up from within a greedy foundation. Such disputes over land are nothing new for the Naga citizens. The construction of the proposed “First Medical College in Nagaland” in Phriebagie, Kohima whose foundation was laid in 2014, was temporarily halted in 2016 because of the controversies over land acquisitions, and was only able to continue with construction in 2017, with it still remaining unfinished to this date. The “Second” medical

and equal participation. And it’s clear that such action will benefit for all. The COVID-19 response has highlighted the power and effectiveness of women’s leadership. Over the past year, countries with women leaders have had lower transmission rates and are often better positioned for recovery. Women’s organizations have filled crucial gaps in providing critical services and information, especially at the community level. Across the board, when women lead in government, we see bigger investments in social protection and greater inroads against pover ty. When women are in parliament, countries adopt more stringent policies on climate change. When women are at the peace table, agree-

college in Nagaland seems to be heading towards a similar fate. What is central to the CVC and Mon medical college debacle is of course the discord between neighboring village jurisdictions. The CVC had claimed that the landowner Gopang had been in open loggerheads with the whole of Chi village, which only brings to light a deep-seeded (often negative) support among the Nagas for one’s own village. The CVC’s agreement to let the medical college be built in their jurisdiction came with a recognition of their own village in the address of the college, which was proposed to read “Medical College Mon at Chi, dist. Mon, Nagaland.” But when this recognition was revoked by the government, which—the CVC alleged—was a diktat by the land owner adding that he “threatened not to give his land (Chi Ponghoa) if the name Chi was found on the foundation stone.” The formerly green-flagged project was shut down. This eagerly sought after establishment seems to be heading towards a long standstill only because the landowner is petty enough to carry forward a village issue which would affect the whole district and eventually the whole state. Will this dispute end

when some type of bribe is given to either party? Is this what the Nagas want to be known as? That a medical college could not be set up because the name of a village was not added to the address of the same? Many such perpetually unfinished projects regularly pop up in Nagaland, the most prominent of it being the Nagaland Foothill Road Project. The unfinished Kohima Town Hall looming over the graves in the NSF martyrs’ park seems almost poetic, but the stark reality of its incompleteness still remains. As far as the present author’s 22 year-old memory can stretch, the proposed Kohima Town hall has always stood as a concrete skeleton, bereft of its body, gnawed away by the worms of, what can only be euphemized as, “mismanaged funds”. An introspective look at the Kohima cityscape perhaps will bring the observer to realize two things: that it is not as “Smart” as it proposes itself to be and that almost every space not-declaring itself to be a pathway, is cramped by houses of all sorts. An acquaintance who recently moved to Kohima, sounding out his displeasure, quipped, “Kohima teh toh saas luwoleh bi jaga nai” (There’s not enough space to even breathe in

Kohima). With little to no townplanning, a significant majority of Kohima citizens have been building almost inverted-pyramid buildings in small chunks of land, expanding horizontally as it climbs up a higher floor and eventually overshadowing the plots beside them, producing figurative as well as literal friction between adjacent landowners. This Naga preoccupation with their land does not only exist within the personal domain, but the organizational as well, where disputes between organizational landowners and the government have time and again, resulted in disruption of road repairs/expansions, as is currently being seen in the deplorable NH-2 stretch of road, especially in and around the Wokha jurisdiction. With only signs posted along the road reading: “Land is our birth right” and “Disputes with land is dispute with our culture”, the observer bumping along this dilapidation simply suffers along, uninterested in the land dispute but only wondering who is to be blamed for their jarring experience along that road. Similarly, encroachment has also had a history in Nagaland of often impeding the smooth running of establishments such as seen in the Intangki imbroglio, the Naga-

Effects of Smoking: A Perspective

moking has become a common habit for many young people today. Knowing the hazardous effects of tobacco, youngsters consume all the intoxicants to keep up the so call “cool” among their peer groups. Many people like to smoke a lot but today I would like to share some of my opinions to all the smokers. There are three ways of benefits and problem for the smokers. The first and foremost benefit of smokers is that there won’t be any robbery in their house because the smokers cough a lot and the thieves are afraid to steal in their house. A Smoker is always awake because of cough and it lead to sleepless night which also may cause Parkinson’s diseases or Schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a serious mental disorder that affects

a person ability to think, feel, and behave clearly. Second benefit is that, a smoker always looks young because the problem of a smoker is they can’t enjoy their old age as they will die soon due to lungs breathing problems. Another benefit of a smoker is that a dog will not chase or bite them. The reason behind is that their immune system will become weak and they have to hold a stick as a support for their body and everybody knowsthat a dog is afraid of stick. Thirdly, now a days, we observe that many elderly people and even young people are developing a habit of smoking alot which is injuriousto health as well as it affects the society. So as a young person, I just want to encourage

everyone to enjoy the youthful and old age life as much as you can in a positive way and be a good example of the younger generation. Don’t spoil yourself by engaging in negative things because like our elders have always said that at least try to learn something new in a day. Imagine all which you have been learning and it will be very helpful for your future and the upcoming young generation. Lastly, instead of wasting money in tobacco products, try at least to contribute to the orphans because sharing a little blessing with others is also a blessing for oneself and everyone around us. Assam border issues as well as the KSCJ encroachment issue. This obsessive attachment that Nagas harbor towards their land has unfortunately been left to fester for far too long by Naga society. But on the flipside, it is to be acknowledged that attempts to reclaim the land for public use are being encouraged as well, a prime example of which is the “open streets campaign” as part of the “Streets for People challenge” where the old NST parking Spot was transformed into a walk-only space as an act of reclamation of the land for general use without personal greed or opposing others from enjoying the freedom of the land. Although a lone campaign, such reclamation projects will only encourage more appreciation and sharing of land and counter the Naga stinginess towards land. And thus it remains necessary to reiterate. How much land does a Naga really need? Isn’t it high time Nagas keep aside their petty tribal, village, clan differences and uplift each other for the betterment of all that exist under the banner of Nagaland? One can only hope it is. Refrain from posting Myanmar videos

Sir,

I have been witnessing a lot of our young girls posting videos of Myanmar protestors on their social media platforms without actually comprehending the gravity of the situation out there in Myanmar. These protestors are risking their lives for the cause of their people and their generation. The numbers of deaths are increasing daily as we speak. However, our girls have rather been ignorant whilst posting pictures of young male protestors on their social media accounts that they deem are “cute”. In a bid to educate our children, especially girls, I would like to urge our youths not to be tone deaf and rather try to resonate with the feelings of these protestors. Jyotiraditya Scindia now BJP backbencher: Rahul

NEW DELHI, MAR 8 (IANS): Rahul Gandhi on Monday took a jab at his once close friend and former Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia, saying “who earlier was counted among ‘decision makers’ in his former party, now only gets to enjoy from the back seat as a spectator ever since he crossed over to saffron pastures”. The former Congress chief ’s remarks came during a two-day national executive meeting of the Indian Youth Congress here that started during the day earlier. According to party sources, Gandhi said he used to tell Scindia “to work hard, so that he could be a Chief Minister”. “He (Scindia) had decision making powers in our party and he always remained with me. But he left the party and joined the BJP, and look where he is sitting today. He is sitting among the backbenchers,” the source quoted Gandhi as saying. Scindia, was one of

Rahul Gandhi

those Congress leaders who could call on Gandhi at any time. He had a free pass to the former Congress President’s home. However, Scindia left the party in March last year orchestrating the collapse of the Kamal Nathled government in Madhya Pradesh. Scindia was made a Rajya Sabha member by the BJP. He had lost the 2019 Lok Sabha polls to K.P. Singh Yadav despite contesting from his traditional seat of Guna, which was considered a family bastion of the Scindias in Madhya Pradesh.

To a question by a youth leader, about turncoats, who have returned to the party-fold, the source quoted Gandhi saying, “The Congress is like a sea. Here everyone following the ideology of the party are welcome. And those who do not follow the ideology of the party can leave anytime.” When pressed hard on how turncoats returned to top posts in the party, Gandhi asserted that they had to work really hard to return to that high post. After the Youth Congress meet, Gandhi tweeted: “Met with IYC colleagues and discussed national issues. At every step, we have to wage a non-violent struggle against the RSS mentality - so that India’s diversity and culture does not come under fire.” The National Executive of the Youth Congress is being organised in the national capital in which several top leaders of the youth wing are participating.

TTV to fight TN polls, join hands with AIMIM C H E N NA I , M A R 8 (AGENCIES): While VK Sasikala’s sudden decision to step away from politics may have rattled the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK), her nephew TTV Dhinakaran seems to be moving ahead with his poll plans. The AMMK will contest the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections from “as many seats as possible”, and has also got an ally — Asaduddin Owaisi’s All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ulMuslimeen (AIMIM). On Monday, talking to reporters, Dhinakaran said “nothing could stop him” and the battle he is going to wage would be the real “dharma yudham,” — a term used by deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam in early 2017 when he declared a revolt against thenAIADMK general secretary Sasikala. “AMMK aims to establish Amma rule in this election. We are definitely going to win,” Dhinakaran said. “The people of Tamil Nadu will vote for us, we have a strong conviction

about that,” he added, comparing his camp to the Pandavas. While AMMK has not been able to strike an alliance with any major party in Tamil Nadu, Owaisi’s AIMIM joined hands with it on Monday. Vaniyambadi, Krishnagiri and Sankarapuram are the three seats where AIMIM will be contesting in the AMMK alliance. Dhinakaran’s decision to fight the polls can prove to be a headache for the ruling AIADMK, whose vote share the AMMK managed to dent in the last Lok Sabha polls. Before that, Dhinakaran, with his money power and charisma, had contested from R K Nagar constituency as an Independent, and defeated both the ruling AIADMK and DMK. Many AIADMK leaders who were with him until recently and those who are still in touch with his camp said Dhinakaran contesting will be more about spoiling AIADMK’s chances than winning.

India’s 75 yrs celebration should be based on public participation: Modi NEW DELHI, MAR 8 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said when India commemorates its 75 years of independence, the country will take “bold steps” to achieve targets that seemed impossible at some point, and emphasised that celebrations should be based on public participation. Speaking at the first meeting of the 259-member high-level national committee headed by him to commemorate 75 years of India’s independence, Modi also said that the celebrations must reflect the spirit of the country’s freedom movement and showcase its achievements to the world since 1947. The “celebrations can be divided into in five subheads- freedom struggle, ideas at 75, achievements at 75, actions at 75 and resolve at 75”, he said at the virtual meeting. “When we talk about public participation for preparations, it engulfs the aspirations, feelings, thoughts,

He said that this festival should reflect the light of spirituality of sages and also the talent and strength of India’s scientists. Modi said that the celebrations should reflect India’s freedom struggle and should pay a tribute to freedom fighters. Emphasising the need to honour and take stories of lesser known freedom fighters to the people, he said, “We have to bring the contribution of every section to the fore.” There are people who are performing some great work for the country for generations, their contribution, thinking and ideas need to be integrated with national efforts,” Modi said. He added that when India celebrates the 75th year of its independence, it will take “bold steps” to achieve targets that seemed impossible at some point. “With your help and cooperation, these celebrations will be at par with India’s idea and stature,” the prime minister said.

You were jailed in murder case: Vijayan to Shah

KANNUR, MAR 8 (IANS): Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday tore into Union Home Minister Amit Shah, stating that he was never jailed in any murder case but there is one person called Amit Shah who was jailed for it. On Sunday, Shah while addressing a mammoth party meeting in the state capital, had asked a few questions to Vijayan about gold smuggling and the reverse dollar hawala case that has rocked the Vijayan government. Vijayan was in full flow while inaugurating the April 6 assembly election campaign at his home turf in Kannur, when he went hammer and tongs at Shah.

“Yesterday he (Shah) had asked me a few questions. What I have to tell him is that I was never in jail for murder and such crimes, but there is one person who went to jail for it, his name is Amit Shah. He also spoke about a suspicious murder that took place, we want him to say which was that case and if said, we will conduct a proper probe. You need not create a smokescreen,” said Vijayan. “In 2010, in the Sohrabuddin case which was a fake encounter case, who was charge-sheeted for that. Amit Shah might have forgotten but all know it was Amit Shah. Please do not teach us anything. The CBI

judge Lodha died in mysterious circumstances and his family is still searching for justice,” added Vijayan, whose statements were greeted with huge applause. “Who was the person who created Acche Din for a person’s company whose assets grew to Rs 16,000 crores. Pinarayi Vijayan is not like that and the people know about it. Your culture is different from ours. Your ways will not work here as Kerala is different,” said Vijayan. Vijayan told Shah that even though you are the Union Home Minister, you will get respect only if you

give respect and don’t forget your status. “Yesterday, he asked me a few questions, I wish to ask him a few questions. When the gold smuggling through the diplomatic baggage was first reported, a Sangh Parivar personality was involved, don’t you know that? The Customs which is under the control of the Centre is in full control of Thiruvananthapuram airport and ever since the BJP started ruling the Centre, this airport has become the hub of gold smuggling. Amit Shah has to answer this,” asked Vijayan.

The prime minister said that this festival of 75 years of independence should be a festival in which the spirit of the freedom struggle can be experienced. “In this (the celebrations), there is also a tribute to martyrs of the country and the resolve to make India of their dreams, in which there is a glimpse of the glory of Sanatan Bharat, which also has the glow of modern India,” Modi said.

Bad loans set to rise at Indian banks: Fitch

New Delhi, Mar 8 (Agencies): Bad loans and credit costs are expected to rise at Indian banks as easy money policies to shore up a pandemic-battered economy may start to tighten, Fitch Ratings said on Monday. The coronavirus lockdowns last year slammed an already struggling financial sector, but recent quarterly reports have shown an improvement in profits and asset quality, NDTV reported. Noting that the recent improvement masked underlying pandemic stress, Fitch said banks would increasingly feel the pinch from the continued impact on small businesses and rising unemployment. “Fitch believes that the disproportionate shock

The measures, which diplomats said could be agreed by EU foreign ministers on March 22, would target companies “generating revenue for, or providing financial support to, the Myanmar Armed Forces”, said one of the documents dated March 5. While the bloc has an arms embargo on Myanmar, and has targeted some senior military officials since 2018, the measures would be its most significant response so far since the coup. EU diplomats told Reuters that parts of the military’s conglomerates, Myanmar Economic Holdings Limited (MEHL) and Myanmar Economic Corporation (MEC), were likely to be targeted, barring EU investors and banks from doing business with them. Covid-19 worsened gender inequalities in Africa: WHO NAIROBI, MAR 8 (IANS): The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated gender inequities in Africa, a top World Health Organization (WHO) official said here. The remark was made in a statement on Sunday by Matshidiso Moeti, the WHO’s Regional Director for Africa ahead of International Women’s Day to on March 8, reports Xinhua news agency. WHO said that African women bore the brunt of income losses, social marginalisation, and health risks that escalated at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in the continent. Moeti pointed out that the pandemic’s aftershocks had a disproportionate impact on women and girls in the continent amid the absence of a robust safety net to minimize their

vulnerabilities. African women despite accounting for about 41 per cent of Covid-19 cases suffered immensely from social and economic disruptions linked to the pandemic including violence, job losses, and poverty. “The work that African women rely on for example in personal care and the informal sector came to a standstill for several months in some countries,” she added.

poorest countries for fear of hitting mainly female workers in the textile sector. German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas on Thursday said fresh sanctions were part of the EU’s plans for economic punishment in response to the coup. “With these measures, we are aiming very deliberately at the decision-makers in the military. Further options, such as the listing of

economic companies of the military, are already on the table and can be taken shortly,” Maas told the German parliament. More individual sanctions: Like much of the West, the EU condemned the coup last month that unseated the government of elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi and EU foreign ministers called for her release and the restoration of civilian rule. However, such calls have been ignored, and police and military have killed more than 50 people to quell daily demonstrations and strikes against the coup, according to the United Nations last week. The EU’s expected new sanctions, which are under preparation this week, follow a U.S. decision last month to target the military and their business interests. Additionally, the bloc is set to place asset freezes and travel bans on military officials and border guard police accused of the crackdown on protesters against the coup, the EU documents seen by Reuters showed, although names are still under discussion.

HK leader ‘fully welcomes’ proposed electoral changes HONG KONG, MAR 8 (AP): Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam said Monday the city’s government “fully welcomes” changes to the city’s electoral system that will substantially increase central government control over Hong Kong politics and exclude Beijing’s critics. Chinese authorities have said the draft decision before China’s National People’s Congress would mean the largely pro-Beijing committee that elects Hong Kong’s leader would also choose a large part of the legislature to ensure that the city is run by “patriots.” The Election Committee would also have the right to vet candidates for the Legislative Council, weeding out any suspected of being insufficiently loyal to China and the ruling Communist Party. Currently, half of Hong Kong’s legislature is directly elected by voters, although the mass resignation of opposition legislators to protest the expulsion of four of their colleagues for being “unpatriotic” means the body is now entirely controlled by Beijing loyalists.

Reopening schools, national effort to beat Covid: UK PM LO N D O N, M A R 8 (IANS): UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson described the reopening of schools in England as a “national effort” to beat coronavirus, even though some experts warned that the country is still not “out of the woods”. On Februay 22, Johnson had announced his long-anticipated “roadmap” exiting the lockdown, under which schools in England are scheduled to reopen from Monday as first part of the four-step plan, Xinhua news agency reported. According to the Prime Minister, the plan was designed to be “cautious but irreversible”. Under the guidance, secondary schools stu-

dents across England are to receive three Covid-19 lateral-flow tests before using at-home kits twice a week. Speaking to Sky News on Sunday, Johnson said: “The reopening of schools marks a truly national effort to beat this virus. “It is because of the determination of every person in this country that we can start moving closer to a sense of normality -- and

“There are loopholes in the electoral systems, there are also flaws in the systems in Hong Kong,” Lam said at a news conference after she returned from the meeting in Beijing. “I fully understand that this is not a matter that can be addressed entirely by the government.” “I’m glad that the central authorities have, again, exercised its constitutional powers to help address this problem for Hong Kong,” she said. She declined to elaborate on the views she had shared to the central authorities regarding the electoral reforms, and said many pieces of legislation in Hong Kong would have to be amended. The NPC, China’s ceremonial legislature,

will all but certainly endorse the draft decision, though it may not take immediate legal effect. Unconfirmed reports say the legislation will also expand the size of the Legislative Council from 70 to 90 and the Election Committee from 1,200 to 1,500. Seats on the Election Committee now reserved for directly elected district counselors will also be eliminated, further cementing Beijing’s control over the body. Lam also said she could not confirm whether legislative elections — already postponed for one year last September ostensibly because of the coronavirus pandemic — would be further deferred due to the electoral reforms. She also said the central government authorities are “very sincere and very committed in trying to move towards the objective of universal suffrage,” which was promised to Hong Kong under the Basic Law, the city’s mini-constitution that was drawn up when the British handed Hong Kong to China in 1997.

it is right that getting our young people back into the classroom is the first step.” Meanwhile, Education Secretary Gavin Williamson said that Monday will “mark a moment of joy for millions of people across the country”. “I do not underestimate how challenging the last few months have been with some children in class and most at home, but I do know how important it is for all children to be back in school, not only for their education but for their mental health and wellbeing,” he said. However, experts have warned Britain is “still not out of the woods” amid concerns over new variants and the risks of the public breaching restriction rules.

DAMASCUS, MAR 8 (IANS): As many as 18 people were killed and three others were injured after two landmines exploded in Syria’s central Hama province, state news agency SANA reported. The landmines ripped through two vehicles in the Salamiyah area on Sunday, Xinhua news agency quoted the report as saying. The report noted that the landmines were leftovers by the terrorists who used to be present in the area. The injured people are in critical condition and being treated in hospital, it added. It is the latest landmine explosion incident to cause civilian causalities in the country. On February 27, five people were killed and 13 others were wounded when a landmine tore through a vehicle in the Salamiyah area. SANA said the terror groups planted mines in areas they had controlled ahead of their defeats.

KABUL, MAR 8 (IANS): Afghan forces have killed an operative of the Islamic State (IS) terror group in Nangarhar province, an official statement issued on Monday said. “Amir Khan alias Amir Masoud Kaftari who served as deputy intelligence chief of the IS outfit has been killed in Khogiani district,” Xinhua news agency quoted the statement published by the provincial government as saying. The security forces also discovered an IS flag and a number of arms and ammunitions from Kaftari’s hideout during the raid, the statement added. The IS, which is still active in parts of Nangarhar and the neighbouring Kunar and Nuristan provinces, is yet to make comment.

Biden admin gives 4-point strategy to govt in Kabul ISLAMABAD, MAR 8 (IANS): The new US administration under President Joe Biden has chalked out a four-point strategy for the Afghanistan government under President Ashraf Ghani, with a vision to end the decades long war, warning of dangerous and dire consequences if the peace deal with the Taliban is scrapped. In a letter, written by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, addressed to the Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and Head of the Afghan peace council Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, it has been warned and intimated that if the peace deal with the Taliban is negated, it would result in

an opportunity for the terror outfit to make “rapid territorial gains”, which may lead to toppling of the Afghan administration under President Ghani. “The best way to advance our shared interests is to do all we can to accelerate the peace talks and to bring all parties into compliance

with their commitments”, read the letter of US Secretary of State, which was handed over to the Afghan President by US’ Special Envoy for Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad, during his recent visit ot Kabul. In the letter, Afghan government has been informed that US is launching a high-level diplomatic engagement with various countries, including Afghan neighbours for the purpose of accelerating the peace efforts. As per the four-point strategy, Washington has proposed a UN-sponsored meeting of foreign ministers of Iran, China, Russia, Pakistan and India to discuss what it called “unified

approach” for the Afghan peace. Zalmay Khalilzad has been instructed to ensure that the US’ proposal is shared both with the Afghan administration and the Taliban. The US maintains that implementation of the proposal would enable both Afghan government and the Taliban to: 1. Develope the foundational principles that will guide Afghanistan’s future constitutional and governing arrangements. 2. Develope a road map to a new inclusive government. 3. Develope the terms of a permanent and comprehensive ceasefire.

Adele named UK’s best-selling female album artist of the century

A

dele has been named as the UK’s best-selling female album artist of the century. The London singer topped the chart from The British Phonographic Industry (BPI), fending off competition from the likes of Pink, Madonna, Rihanna, Dido and A m y Winehouse in sixth. Her second album, ‘21‘, also holds the title for the UK’s number one album by a female artist since 2000, after shifting just shy of 6 million copies in the UK alone. The new statistics have been unveiled to coincide with the confirmed return of National Album Day on October 21, which will adopt ‘Celebrating Women In Music’ as its 2021 theme. Geoff Taylor, Chief Executive BPI, and Kim Bayley, Chief Executive Entertainment Retailers Association, the organisations behind National Album Day, said: “We are delighted that National Album Day is returning for a fourth edition, shining a light this year on the tremendous contribution women make to music through the album format, supported by our official partners Bowers & Wilkins and BBC Sounds. “While the ways in which fans enjoy music constantly evolve, the album remains central to artists’ self-expression and to fans’ understanding of what an artist has to say. National Album Day is an opportunity for artists and fans alike to celebrate this much loved artform and remind ourselves of its continuing power to tell stories, influence and inspire.” Elsewhere, Adele’s close friend, comedian Alan Carr, revealed that she has played him some of the songs on her anticipated album – hailing them as “so amazing”. Harry, Meghan accuse UK royals of racism in Oprah interview

D

uchess of Sussex Meghan Markle claimed she felt alone fighting constant media speculation and “falsehoods perpetuated” by “the firm”, her description for the British royal family, ever since her marriage to the Prince Harry in 2018, in an explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey. In the hotly-anticipated interview which aired on CBS on Sunday at 8 p.m., Meghan also accused the Royal family of being cold and racist, especially towards her and their son Archie, which pushed the couple away. Meghan said the fear for their child, for whom no security was offered by the Royal family, and the growing scrutiny also had a damaging effect on her mental health, and she claimed going through sui-

cidal thoughts while she was pregnant. “I was ashamed to say it at the time I just didn’t want to be alive any more. And that was a very real and clear, and frightening and constant thought,” she said in the two-hour prerecorded interview, adding that the Palace refused to protect her. “My regret is believing them when they said I would be protected,” a teary-eyed

Meghan said at the end of the interview she gave along with Harry. Meghan spoke at length about the issue of Archie’s skin colour. “In those months when I was pregnant, we have in tandem the conversation of, ‘He won’t be given security. He’s not going to be given a title’, and also concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he’s born,” she said, reveal-

ing that while the couple didn’t refuse for the official photo when Archie was born, Markle was scared for his safety. “There was a lot of fear surrounding it. I was very scared of having to offer up our baby, knowing they weren’t going to be kept safe,” she said, adding that the information was relayed to her by Harry, who later in the interview, refused to share the details of the conversation, or with whom he had the conversation, since he felt it would be “very damaging to them”. “I went to human resources and asked for help and the person told me this. eMy heart goes out to you because we see how bad it is. But we can’t help you because you’re not a paid employee of the institution’,” recalled Meghan. Harry later in the in-

terview expressed how helpless and ashamed he felt around at that time, and later realised how he had been “trapped” all along just like the “rest of his family”. Harry revealed that while he loves his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, and his brother, Prince William, despite the “space” between their relationship, he hopes “time will heal” it. Yet, he is not sure about his relationship with his father, Prince Charles, and feels “let down” by him, since Harry felt that the family had the opportunities to be there for them. Harry referenced how his father stopped taking calls after the couple informed the Palace of stepping back as active members of the Royal family, before they had made the formal announcement. (IANS)

Man Utd end City’s record streak; Liverpool lose L o nd o n , M a r 8 (IANS): Manchester United ended Manchester City’s record breaking 21-game winning run on Sunday when they won 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium. A second-minute penalty from Bruno Fernandez and a 50th minute goal from left-back Luke Shaw on Sunday gave United a win that still leaves them 11 points behind their neighbors, but will give them local bragging rights and confidence for the rest of the season. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side defended magnificently and were lethal on the break, with Anthony Martial in excellent form in their win, and the only negative for Solskjaer was an ankle injury that forced Marcus Rashford off midway through the second half, Xinhua news agency reports. Daniel Amartey’s header two minutes from time had momentarily lifted Leicester City into second place ahead of United after a 2-1 win away to Brighton on Saturday night. T h e d e f e a t l e ave s Brighton deep in the battle

Aston Villa defender Romain Saiss missed a sitter, while both Ollie Watkins and Ezri Konsa struck the woodwork for the home side as the Midlands derby against Wolves ended in a 0-0 draw.

to avoid relegation, even though Alan Lallana’s first goal for the club in the 10th minute had given them the lead. Kelechi Iheanacho drew Leicester level from Youri Tielemans’ pass in the 62nd minute, as the visitors began to take control of the game before Amartey’s late winner.

Tottenham 4-1 Palace

Tottenham continue their recovery with a 4-1 win at home to Crystal Palace. Gareth Bale scored

in the 25th and 49th minutes after two assists from Harry Kane, who also netted a brace. Burnley made it five draws from their last five games at Turf Moor in their home game against Arsenal. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang opened the scoring in the 6th minute, but Granit Xhaka’s suicidal backpass rebounded off Chris Wood in the 39th minute to level the scores. Arsenal had a penalty overturned by VAR in the

closing minutes and Dani Ceballos hit the post in a frantic finish to leave the visitors frustrated, while Burnley edge closer to salvation. Southampton ended a run of six defeats and a draw in their last seven games with a 2-0 triumph away to bottom side Sheffield United, which came thanks to James WardProwse’s 32nd minute penalty and a powerful shot from Che Adams four minutes into the second half.

West Brom and Newcastle United drew 0-0 in a game where neither side looked like scoring, which is unsurprising given that Newcastle’s top three scorers are all injured. Under normal circumstances that would have been a good result for Newcastle, but Fulham won 1-0 away to Liverpool on Sunday afternoon to move to within just a point of Steve Bruce’s side and level on points with Brighton. Mario Lemina’s goal on the stroke of half-time gave Fulham a triumph their performance fully merited while condemning Liverpool to their sixth consecutive home defeat in the league. Jurgen Klopp’s side are now seventh and running a very real risk of not qualifying for European competition next season.

Windies beat SL; win T20 series 2-1 Ant i g ua , M a r 8 (IANS): West Indies beat Sri Lanka by three wickets in the third T20I to win the three-match series 2-1 at the Coolidge Cricket Ground. Fabian Allen smashed three sixes in the second last over of the match to help the West Indies chase down Sri Lanka’s 131/4 with an over to spare. Earlier, Dinesh Chandimal scored an unbeaten

half century but an 85-run stand between him and Ashen Bandara for the fifth wicket could only get Sri Lanka just past the 130run-mark. Allen, Kevin Sinclair, Jason Holder and Obed McCoy all took a wicket each. The West Indies were constrained by Sri Lanka’s spinners during the chase. Tokyo Olympics to be 1st-ever Antetokounmpo wins MVP as LeBron dominates NBA All-Star Game ‘gender-balanced’ Games: IOC The IOC said that the 206 competing nations should have at least one female and one male athlete in their respective teams. “All 206 NOCs (National Olympic Committees) and the IOC Refugee Olympic Team will be encouraged to have their flag carried by one female and one male athlete at the Opening Ceremony,” said the IOC. Originally scheduled to be held from July 24 to August 8, 2020, the Tokyo Olympics was postponed in March last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Additionally, at least 40.5 per cent of the athletes competing in the Tokyo Paralympics, which will be held from August 24 to

September 5 this year, will be women. “At the Opening Ceremony, all the competing National Paralympic Committees will also be encouraged to have their flag carried by one female and one male athlete,” said the IOC. Following the appointment of its new president, Hashimoto Seiko, the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee has increased the size of its executive board, bringing the percentage of women to 42 per cent. “The IOC is committed to gender equality in all areas, from the athletes competing on and off the field of play to leadership roles in sports organisations,” said IOC President Thomas Bach.

India-NZ WTC final in Southampton: Ganguly

Southampton’s Ageas Bowl Stadium.

New Delhi, Mar 8 (PTI): India will play their inaugural World Test Championship final against New Zealand at Southampton’s Ageas Bowl Stadium from June 18-22, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly confirmed on Monday. Initially, the final was supposed to be held at the Lord’s but Southampton, with a five-star facility inside the stadium, will make it easier for both the ICC and the England and Wales Cricket Board to create a bio-bubble for the two teams. “Yes, the final will be K Y M C

held at Ageas Bowl,” Ganguly replied to a query from PTI. India qualified for the marquee clash after beating England 3-1 in a justconcluded Test series. The BCCI president, who has been on a medical break after undergoing a bypass surgery, is expected to travel to UK to watch the final match. Southampton, with its slowish track, puts India on even keel with New Zealand as spinners will come into the game at the venue. “I will go for the World Test Championship and

hopefully we can get past New Zealand in the final. New Zealand will be there before us and they will play a couple of Test matches (against England),” Ganguly told ‘India Today’ channel. He lavished praise on the team for its stupendous performance in both the away series against Australia and home games against England. Massive achievement? “Oh yes, specially after what players have gone through to be in those bubbles and play cricket day in and day out. It was re-

markable. Right from IPL till now. What they have achieved is fantastic,” he told the channel. “I think we must congratulate Ajinkya Rahane, first in Australia and Virat Kohli in England, the head coach, support staff, everybody. (Rahul) Dravid who does a lot of work behind the scenes with these boys. To see that day in Brisbane was outstanding,” he said. Ganguly believes that Rishabh Pant is a match winner in the mould of Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh and Mahendra Singh Dhoni. “I have seen him for past two years and I have belief in match-winners. A player, who on his day will win you games. Pant is one such guy. “Sydney Test, if he had been there for six more overs, he would have won us that game too. He is like Dhoni, Sehwag and Yuvraj, who can win matches alone,” said the former India captain. He was mighty impressed with Pant’s game sense during his under pressure hundred at Motera.

Giannis Antetokounmpo was named MVP with a 100% shooting record and gamehigh 35 points.

James’ participation in the annual showcase was at one time in doubt. Last month James slammed the NBA for holding the contest during the global pandemic calling it a “slap in the face.” NBA commissioner

Adam Silver responded to the criticism from James and others at a weekend news conference, saying the players he spoke to this week were in favor of holding the contest. “It would have been a bigger deal not to have it,”

Silver said. “I know that some players have made public comments suggesting they’d rather not be at All-Star. Many have told me directly they’re thrilled to be All-Stars. “It should be judged, when people are looking

back, as to what this meant to them as opposed to what some of the initial reactions were from the players.” Antetokounmpo becomes just the second winner of the MVP award named in honour of Bryant who died in a helicopter crash just outside of Los Angeles in January 2020. Kawhi Leonard was the first recipient at last year’s All-Star Game in Chicago. “To have the trophy with the name of Kobe Bryant, it’s amazing, and I know he would be happy. Yeah, I know he’d be happy,” said Antetokounmpo. “I wanted to win the one last year really bad and I had a chance to win.” The 70th All-Star Game had a different feel to it because there were no fans in the arena due to the global pandemic. But that didn’t stop the players from putting on a show at the State Farm Arena including a healthy dose of dunks, alley-oops, behind the back passes and long-range threes like the one by Lillard, who finished with 32 points.

L au s a nn e , M a r 8 (IANS): The Tokyo Olympics, which will be held from July 23 to August 8 this year, will be the first “gender-balanced” Games in Olympic history, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said on Monday. “Almost 49 per cent of the athletes participating will be women, according to the IOC quota allocation. These will be the first gender-balanced Games in history. Washington, Mar 8 (AFP): Damian Lillard nailed a game-ending three-pointer from just inside halfcourt as LeBron James improved to 4-0 as an NBA All-Star Game captain with a 170-150 win over Team Durant on Sunday night. Two-time NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo captured the Kobe Bryant MVP Award going a perfect 16-of-16 from the field for a game-high 35 points in Atlanta. “It’s fun. I was happy,” said Antetokounmpo. “I just love being around great players. It makes it easier to play with them.” Antetokounmpo’s 16for-16 game easily eclipsed the previous All-Star record of the Philadelphia 76ers’ Hal Greer, who went eight-of-eight in 1968. Antetokounmpo also made all three of his three-point attempts. James improved to 4-0 in All-Star games he has served as a team captain. He finished with four points in just 13 minutes of playing time. “I always try to pick the right team, and I’ve been lucky enough for four years to pick the right team,” James said. “Guys go out and compete and play to win. I’ve been on the winning side of all four.”

Note: The Shradh (Thirteen day ritual) of Late Ram Kumar Thapa will be held on 14th (Sunday) March 2021 at his residence in Upper Chandmari, Kohima.

Punia wins gold in Rome

New Delhi, Mar 8 (IANS): India’s Bajrang Punia got back to the No. 1 spot in the 65 kg wrestling world rankings after winning gold at the Matteo Pelicone Ranking Series in Rome. Earlier, Vinesh Phogat took back the top spot in the 53 kg rankings after winning gold in her weight category at the ranking series. Both wrestlers, who have qualified for this year’s Tokyo Olympics, had slipped off the top of the rankings during the lengthy breaks they had to take in 2020 on account of the Covid-19 pandemic. While Punia came into the tournament ranked second, Vinesh was third. Punia, 27, defended his title in Rome on Sunday after beating Mongolia’s Tulga Tumur Ochir 2-2. He was trailing 2-0 for much of the bout but managed to take two points in the last 30 seconds. Since Punia was the last to score a point, he was declared winner on criteria. Vinesh, meanwhile, won gold without dropping a single point throughout the tournament, beating Canada’s Diana Weicker 4-0 in the final. This is the 26-year-old Asian Games champion’s second gold medal in two weeks, having earlier won the 53 kg title in the Outstanding Ukrainian Wrestlers and Coaches Memorial tournament in Kiev, Ukraine. Meanwhile, Sumit Malik won bronze in the 125 kg category and jumped to fourth in the rankings. He gained nine points after coming into the tournament ranked 44. Naveen Mor rose to fourth in the GrecoRoman 130 kg category after winning bronze in Rome. Sarita Mor rose to 2nd in the women’s 57 kg rankings after winning silver while Anshu Malik got up to fifth from eighth in the same weight class.

Djokovic breaks Federer’s record for most weeks as world No. 1

London, Mar 8 (IANS): Serbian tennis great Novak Djokovic on Monday set a record for most weeks at No. 1 in the 48-year history of the ATP rankings. Djokovic entered his 311th week at the top of the rankings, one week longer than Swiss 20-time Grand Slam winner Roger Federer’s record. 18-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic grabbed his ninth Australian Open title last month. Federer had set the record in July 2012, surpassing American Pete Sampras’ record of 286 weeks. Djokovic, 33, had fallen to No. 22 in May 2018 amid a series of injuries and downturn in form. However, he stormed back into the

top five after winning Wimbledon and the US Open in 2018 and following that up with a win at the 2019 Australian Open and 2019 Wimbledon. Federer, Djokovic and Spain’s Rafael Nadal have dominated men’s singles tennis, particularly the Grand Slams, for nearly two decades. From the 2003 Wimbledon to the 2021 Australian Open, the three players have won 58 out of 70 Grand Slams. They won 18 consecutive slams from the 2005 French Open to Wimbledon in 2009, and 13 consecutive slams from the 2017 Australian Open to the 2020 Australian Open.

Mumbai beat Goa 6-5 in penalty shootout; reach maiden ISL final

Mumbai City celebrates winning the penalty shoot-out against FC Goa.(ISL/Sportzpics)

New Delhi, Mar 8 (Agencies): Rowllin Borges struck the decisive penalty to steer Mumbai City FC to a 6-5 win on penalties (2-2 aggregate score) and into its maiden Indian Super League (ISL 2020-21) final on Monday. The two teams headed into the penalty shootout after neither side managed a goal in 120 minutes of energy-sapping, highintensity football. Mumbai City FC’s opponent in the final will be decided on Tuesday when ATK Mohun Bagan takes on NorthEast United FC in the second leg of their semifinal. FC Goa went close to taking the lead in the 27th minute through Redeem Tlang. Jorge Ortiz held up the ball brilliantly to bring Alberto Noguera into play. The Spaniard danced past his marker before scuffing

a right-footed shot on goal, which Amrinder Singh could only parry it into the box. Redeem looked to turn the ball into the net but Amey Ranawade threw himself on the line to make a superb block. The Islanders had to shore up in defence to deal with Ortiz, who was a constant menace in the final third. Amrinder was called into action early in the second half when he dived to his left to parry Alexander Jesuraj’s shot onto the upright. Juan Ferrando made the bold move at half-time to bring on Ishan Pandita as the main striker. The youngster forced a fine save from Amrinder in the 62nd minute when he struck a diving header off Jesuraj’s cross. The last 20 minutes of the clash was a rather

tempestuous affair, with both sides making frequent fouls. James Donachie had the chance to become the hero of the evening deep into stoppage time. Edu Bedia curled in a fine free-kick and Donachie had a free header and just the ‘keeper to beat, but the Australian failed to make contact and extra time ensued. Bedia whipped in a dangerous free-kick from the right in the 104th minute, but Amrinder was up to the task and gloved it away for a corner. Pandita nearly got on the end of a poor backward header from Hernan Santana in the 113th minute, but Amrinder raced off his line to clear the danger in the nick of time. the very first minute of the game. The opportunity was duly converted by India’s vice captain Harmanpreet to give his side an early lead. India’s moment to regain the lead came in the 28th minute when forward Mandeep successfully converted a penalty corner on

the rebound. India dominated the proceedings at the start of the fourth quarter, but a quick turnaround saw Great Britain grabbing the opportunity as Alan Forsyth scored an equaliser in the 55th minute.
