Peaceful coexistence need of Massive global cyber attack creates chaos the hour in Nagaland: Dr. Shürho stroy it. Russia’s largest bank Sberbank said its systems “detected in time attempts to penetrate bank infrastructure”. Germany’s Deutsche Bahn computers were also impacted, with the rail operator reporting that station display panels were affected. In a statement, computer security group Kaspersky Labs said it was “trying to determine whether it is possible to decrypt data locked in the attack -- with the aim of developing a decryption tool as soon as possible.” On Saturday, a cyber security researcher told AFP he had accidentally discovered a “kill switch” that could prevent the spread of the ransomware. The researcher, tweeting as @MalwareTechBlog, said that the discovery was accidental, but that registering a domain name used by the malware stops it from spreading. Computers already affected will not be helped by the solution. But @MalwareTechBlog warned that the “crisis isn’t over” as those behind it “can always change the code and try again”. The malware’s name is WCry, but analysts were also using variants such as

WannaCry. Britain’s National Cyber Security Centre and its National Crime Agency were looking into the UK incidents, which disrupted care at National Health Service facilities, forcing ambulances to divert and hospitals to postpone operations. Pictures on social media showed screens of NHS computers with images demanding payment of $300 (230 pounds, 275 euros) in Bitcoin, saying: “Ooops, your files have been encrypted!” It demands payment in three days or the price is doubled, and if none is received in seven days the files will be deleted, according to the screen message. “ R a n s o m wa r e b e comes particularly nasty when it infects institutions like hospitals, where it can put people’s lives in danger,” said Kroustek, the Avast analyst. A hacking group called Shadow Brokers released the malware in April claiming to have discovered the flaw from the NSA, Kaspersky said. Although Microsoft released a security patch for the flaw earlier this year, many systems have yet to be updated, researchers said.

‘Ransomware’ hits Indian companies, govt. institutions

LONDON/NEW DELHI, MAY 13 (AGENCIES): Cyber security experts rushed to restore systems on Saturday after an unprecedented global wave of cyberattacks that struck targets ranging from Russia’s banks to British hospitals and a French carmaker’s factories. The hunt was on for the culprits behind the assault, which was being described as the biggest cyber ransom attack ever. Mikko Hypponen, chief research officer at the Helsinki-based cyber security company F-Secure, told AFP that the attack was “the biggest ransomware outbreak in history”, saying that 130,000 systems in more than 100 countries had been affected. A bunch of Indian companies including government establishments were also infected by the ransomware WannaCry. He said that Russia and India were hit particularly hard, in large part because the older Windows XP operating software is still widely

DDADU demands hike in passenger fare Staff Reporter

D I M A P U R , M AY 1 3 (NPN): Reacting to the recent directive issued by the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) Dimapur concerning seating capacity in autorickshaws, the Dimapur District Autorickshaw Drivers Union (DDADU) has demanded a hike in passenger fare so as to make up for what they described “the loss incurred due to the RTA directive.” As a mark of protest, DDADU members said around 700 to 800 autorickshaws refused to ply for more than four hours on Saturday causing inconvenience to commuters. After an appeal by DDADU officials, the protesting autorickshaw drivers agreed to call off their protest later in the afternoon. Pointing out that autorickshaw drivers have been complying with the rules and regulations of the authority over the years, the union therefore requested the responsible authority to understand the grievances of the autorickshaws in order to control the situation. Failure on the part of the authority would compel the union to impose stern action, DDADU cautioned.

State agencies and major companies around the world were left reeling by the attacks which blocked access to files and demanded ransom money, forcing them to shut down their computer systems. “The recent attack is at an unprecedented level and will require a complex international investigation to identify the culprits,” said Europol, Europe’s policing agency. The attacks, which experts said affected dozens of countries, used a technique known as ransomware that locks users’ files unless they pay the attackers a designated sum in the virtual Bitcoin currency. The attacks apparently exploited a

MON, MAY 13: All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretary in-charge of Nagaland, Dr. Jayakumar continued his tirade against the BJP, urging the people of Nagaland not to let a divisive force rule the state. Addressing Congress party men here at the Congress Bhavan Mon, Dr. Jayakumar asked as to how could the people let BJP, a divisive force, rule the state when Nagaland was a Christian state, where people read Bible everyday and where Churches are visible in every nook and corner of the state. With barely 180 days left before the declaration of election in the state, he urged upon the party men to remain strong and united to work with a single objective of bringing Congress back to power in the coming election. “If congress is not

flaw exposed in documents leaked from the US National Security Agency (NSA). The attacks hit a whole range of organisations and businesses worldwide. French carmaker Renault was forced to stop production at sites in France and Slovenia, saying the measure was aimed at stopping the virus from spreading. In the United States, package delivery group FedEx acknowledged it had been hit by malware and said it was “implementing remediation steps as quickly as possible.” Russia’s interior ministry said that some of its computers had been hit by a “virus attack” and that efforts were underway to de-

brought back to power, Nagaland will become the land of satan and destroyed to the last,” he cautioned. Citing the example of eight Congress legislators who had defected to NPF, he lamented that Nagaland was one state where impossible things can become possible. He was however optimistic that the party would be able to work out a strategy to bring Congress back to power in the state. While accusing BJP of luring the voters with money, Dr. Jayakumr also expressed sadness that most of the voters demand money and sell their fundamental rights during election. In this regard, he urged the party workers to uphold the principle of the Congress party and to stop the menace of the BJP. He pointed out that the responsibility of the Congress party was to bring change and check corruptions.

Also addressing the party workers, NPCC president, K. Therie said though the Congress MLAs had defected to NPF, the party has over three lakhs voters intact. He informed that the NPF would be divided and their vote share would be reduced in the 2018 general election giving a fair chance for the Congress to form the government. He also accused the BJP and RSS of trying to convert all religion to Hinduism and to introduce hindi, Hindu cultural and religion in the school books. He cautioned that after 20 years our culture, identity, custom and Christianity would vanish if BJP and its alliance come to power in the state. Claiming that Congress was the only political party with a secular ideology, Therie alleged that the NPF was a political wing of the BJP and the RSS in the state.

Leave aside political differences and work for the welfare of the people He also sought the cooperation of the village leaders and landowners saying Kohima village, reportedly the biggest village in Asia, should be more co-operative and accommodative with any kind of developmental activities carried out by the state government. As Kohima being the state capital, he said the land owners should also avoid creating any kind of hindrances as far as welfare programmes of the government was concerned, but to contribute positively and facilitate them. Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu, while thanking and appreciating the land donors for the upcoming Nagaland Medical College at Kohima, requested the other land owners who were yet to donate their lands to judiciously donate for the welfare of our future generations.

ENCSU reminds DoHE to address demands DIMAPUR, MAY 13 (NPN): Eastern Nagaland College Students’ Union (ENCSU) has reminded the Department of Higher Education (DoHE) to address its demands at the earliest, saying it was not satisfied with the response received from the former director, higher education. In a press release, ENCSU chairman, Longre Chang, and joint secretary, Nokchem Angth, said that the union would not allow any colleges within its jurisdiction to function without sufficient teachers from next semester. E N C S U a c k n ow l edged posting of principal at Wangkhao College, Mon and Yingli College, Longleng, but appealed for posting a principal who could physically and practically be present in the college. Po i n t i n g o u t t h a t Yingli College was running without the principal

for more than two years, the ENCSU said it cannot accept the posting of designated principal at Yingli College, Longleng transferred from Sao Chang College, Tuensang. The union said that during its visit to Sao Chang College, the principal was found absent from his bounded duty reportedly due to poor health. The union has, therefore, urged the government and the department to make an alternative arrangement at the earliest possible. Further, the union reaffirmed its demand that the department should take disciplinary action against the irregular teaching staffs and the action taken report be made known to the union. The union also demanded immediate cancellation of all the teachers on attachment. ENCSU reiterated that the new building of Zisaji

Presidency College, Kiphire should be electrified and all the basic necessity be provided before shifting to the new site. Acknowledging the department for providing the brand new bus to Zisaji Presidency College, Kiphire, the union has, however, appealed for sanctioning the required buses to all the colleges as mentioned in its memorandum. ENCSU has further appealed to the government and the department to take immediate action in constructing staff quarter and the border fencing. It said that failure to utilize the land judiciously has led to rapid increase in land encroachment. ENCSU said when the citizens of Eastern Nagaland have sacrificed their land for the sake of development and education, the government and the department cannot do anything good to the

people of the Eastern Nagaland especially when it comes to higher education. Expressing pain at the plight of students suffering during examination due to non-completion of the syllabus, the union said that colleges have to run with single teacher or even without a teacher in some subject (department) whereas the same department/subject in colleges from other districts were being manned by excess teachers. ENCSU maintained that chemistry department and political science department of Sao Chang College was run by only one teacher each and no teacher for computer science. It said that the same problem was with all the four government colleges. In the light of the above, the union has called upon the government and the department to “deliver justice to the underdeveloped people.” K Y M C
