D I M A P U R , M AY 1 7 (NPN): In view of the repair works along the National Highway between Kohima and Dimapur, Kohima police have informed commuters that the road has been diverted from Peducha towards 10 Mile, Tsiesema. For Kohima-Dimapur bound vehicles the road has been diverted from Zubza CRPF camp, above Shalom Bible Seminary, to Kiruphema, then to Peducha.

World faces massive cryptocurrency attack, bigger than WannaCry: report SAN FRANCISCO/NEW DELHI, MAY 17 (IANS): After facing a massive ‘WannaCrypt’ ransomware attack that exploited a vulnerability in a Microsoft software and hit 150 countries, the same Windows vulnerability (MS17-010) has also been exploited to spread another type of malware that is quietly but fast generating digital cash from machines it has infected.

According to a report in The Registrar on Wednesday, tens of thousands of computers globally have been affected by the “Adylkuzz attack” that targets machines, lets them operate and only slows those down to generate digital cash or “Monero” cryptocurrency in the background.

“Monero” -- being popularised by North Korea-linked hackers -- is an open-source cryptocurrency created in April 2014 that focuses on privacy, decentralisation and scalability. It is an alternative to Bitcoin and is being used for trading in drugs, stolen credit cards and counterfeit goods.

“Initial statistics suggest that this attack may be larger

in scale than WannaCry[pt], because this attack shuts down SMB networking to prevent further infections with other malware (including the WannaCry[pt] worm) via that same vulnerability,” US-based cyber security firm Proofpoint researchers were quoted as saying in the report.

“Mining of cryptocurrency simply means solving complex cryptography problems designed within the algorithm of a cybercurrency that requires a lot of computing,” Saket Modi, CEO and Co-founder of Delhi-based IT risk assessments provider Lucideus, told IANS. To draw a parallel, there can only be 21 million Bitcoins that can be mined out of which 16 million have already been mined, informed Modi.

“Hence, there is a new wave of cyber attacks where the hacker is least interested in the personal information of the victim and instead his only motivation is to gain access to the CPU of the victim’s computer/mobile/ IoT device so that they can use it to mine more currencies (and correspondingly make more money),” Modi told IANS. This looks like something more dangerous than ‘WannaCrypt’ as the victim doesn’t come to know that they have been hacked, but, on the other side, “the good part is that the hacker here is not interested in the victim’s personal data,” Modi told IANS. To achieve this, the hackers find a vulnerability in one of the servers in the targeted organisation or they would infect a website which employees of a targeted organisation often visit.

Resolutions adopted

The meeting passed several resolutions among which was to form a new political party to be named as Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). The meeting also resolved that DPP will

strive towards strengthening the peace process and contribute towards “realization of early, honorable and wholesome resolution of the Naga political problem.”

The joint statement issued by DPP president Chingwang Konyak and vice president Nuzota Swuro reaffirmed that “DPP will leave no stone unturned in its efforts to mobilize public opinion and support that is aimed at achieving early political solution and the realization of genuine peace, real unity and collective brotherhood,” said Chingwang Konyak and Nuzota Swuro in a press note.

DPP resolved to make all out efforts to strengthen the democratic principles at all levels of society and oppose corruption, violence and injustice.

It was also resolved that DPP would stand for transparency, strive for re-

spect of human rights and dignity, protect freedom of speech and expression, work for the uplift of weaker and marginalised sections of society, uphold gender equality and endeavour to protect Naga cultural heritage.

NEW DELHI, MAY 17 (AGENCIES): Despite being unwell Congress chief Sonia Gandhi is trying to finalise a name for presidential election. On Wednesday, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) said its leader Sharad Pawar declined the offer of Sonia Gandhi to be the Opposition candidate.

“In last month’s meeting, Sonia Gandhi had asked Pawar saheb to be the opposition candidate.

However, he refused. He said ‘I should not be considered’,” NCP’s national spokesperson Nawab Malik told IANS. Malik added that Pawar had already said in the past that he was not interested in contesting the election.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called on Gandhi on Tuesday to discuss a consensus candidate for the presidential election.

Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama had on April 2 flagged off the mountaineer’s double ascent expedition from Guwahati in Assam. She scaled the Mount Everest twice in May 2011 and again scaled the peak on May 18 in 2013.

If she is successful with her double ascent this time, Jamsenpa will set a record of climbing the Mt Everest five times.

D I M A P U R , M AY 1 7 (NPN): Dimapur Police on Wednesday launched its squad of “Medical First Responder Team (MFRT) comprising of an ambulance and two motorcycles, which would function under the Dimapur Traffic Police and be on duty round-the-clock.

In a press release, Addl DCP & PRO said the medical first responder team would be stationed at both Zone-I and Zone-II traffic control and respond to vehicle accident cases.

Workshop conducted on complexities and contradictions of news reporting

KO H I M A , M AY 1 7 (NPN): Editor, Imphal Free Press, Pradip Phanjoubam said democracy would remain incomplete without the existence of fourth estate.

Resource person Phanjoubam said this during the one-day workshop held on complexities and contradictions of news reporting, organized by department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) at capital convention, Kohima Wednesday.

Speaking on the basics of news reporting, Phanjoubam said journalism was about telling the story of events coherently and articulately, whereby one should have the basic communication skills.

He said while writing a news story, it should be an inverted pyramid style stating that the headline and introduction of the story should capture the attention of the readers keeping in mind the five important Ws (who, where, when, what, why) and one H (how).

Phanjoubam said a reporter must have the knowledge on the subject be it electioneering process, war or sports so that the key words were not missed. He also spoke on paid news, maintenance of neutrality etc.

She said both the government press office and the media were fundamental

to each other and share a common ground as their very existence were interdependent.

Speaking on ethics: code of conduct, Theünuo urged the journalists to be responsible, truthful, accurate and not to have conflicting interest but to work for public interest, be fair and be a steward of the public interest.

She also dwelled on various other points like democracy and free press, empowering people, what press office does, link between the government and the people, journalists and government press officials, role of a press officer, gover nment spokesperson, press conferences etc.

on “Reflections of media in Nagaland”.

Longchari said journalist or media houses should not let themselves be driven away by those at the helm of affairs, adding that neutrality should be maintained between the government and general public.

He also suggested that routine coverage of events should not only contain the speeches of the chief guest but should also focus on the other aspects as well.

Longchari was optimistic on the suggestion of specialization and beat journalism in the state while also opining that the protection of the journalist’s identity during critical reporting should be maintained by the editors and publishers.

Stating that media has the power to bring about the social change in the society, he also informed to do grass-root reporting and also asked the journalist to know where he/she stands.

NSA host book launch-cum-discussion

DIMAPUR: Book release-cum-discussion on “A girl swallowed by a tree: Lotha Naga tales retold” by Nzanmongi Jasmine Patton was hosted by Naga Scholar Association (NSA) at School of International Studies, JNU, New Delhi on May 12.

A press note by NSA general secretary, Pouringthanliu stated that the book launch was chaired by Dr. Veio, department of English, Bhagat Singh College, University of Delhi, New Delhi. He said the Nagas should engage in discussion, dialogue, and talk on folklore and other aspects of oral tradition to help recognize and

value the importance of their tradition and culture. He also said that the stories were not just to tell and retell for amusement and entertainment but mirror the way of life of the Naga people. The author of the book “A girl swallowed by a tree: Lotha Naga tales retold”, Nzanmongi, assistant professor in Gargi College, University of Delhi, said these narratives were not hers but community’s stories and not just mere stories but a history, culture, identity and origin of the Lotha Nagas. Her book brings diverse collection of narratives, projecting multiplicity of wide-ranging Naga narrations.

The audience participated in a grand discussion on Naga oral tradition and its various aspects, the importance and functions of oral narratives, and various other aspects of oral literature in perspectives. The launching of this book has encouraged the young Naga scholars to think and stimulated a sense of belongingness, oneness and appreciation of their past history.

places, etc were conducted by the troops of AR along with police representatives and local populace of Heningkunglwa village.

Altogether, 53 local and youths of Heningkunglwa village attended the programme.

Meanwhile, 36 AR also conducted a medical camp at NTU village, Peren district to provide

basic medical assistance to villagers of NTU and neighbouring village.

MDLSA: Mon District Legal Services Authority (MDLSA) organised a programme at Hongpoi village on 17, attended by village council members, church leaders and students of Hongphoi and Wangla villages.

Speaking on Village Council Act and Consumer Rights, Moba Konyak, panel lawyer MDLSA said that The Nagaland Village and Area Councils Act 1978 appraised on the powers and duties of the act. He said that the village council shall formulate village development schemes, to supervise proper maintenance of water supply, roads, forests, sanitation, education and other welfare activities.

Speaking on child labour and women rights, Mannon panel lawyer MDLSA said that the constitution not only grant equality to women but also empower the state to adopt measures of positive discrimination in favour of women.

He said that within the framework of democratic polity- laws, development policies, plan and programmes were aimed at women’s advancement in different spheres.

Mannon further stated that there were constitutional provisions, legal provisions and women’s right for protection under criminal law of India and highlighted special initiatives for women such as National Commission for women, reservation for women in local selfgovernment, the National Plan of Action for Girl

Child (1991-2000) and National Policy for the Empowerment of women, 2001.

Speaking on RTI Act and Arms Act, Dominic Kaiba APP appraised that The Right to Information Act, 2005 provided citizens to secure access to information under the control of public authorities, in order to promote transparency and accountability in the working of every public authority, the constitution of a Central Information Commission and State Information Commissions and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.

DIMAPUR: Kudatech Skill Centre (KSC) Walford Colony, Dimapur conducted a six-week skill development programme on electrical house wiring, sponsored

by Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI).

The valedictory programme was held on May 17 with ADC, Tening Holohon Yepthomi and SIDBI Dimapur branch manager S. Pauminthang Gangte as resource persons respectively.

Yepthomi in his address stated that there were ample works lying vacant for skilled people and encouraged the trainees to implement their skill with sincerity and dedication.

Gangte encouraged the trainees to be an asset in the society and informed on the availability of various bank loan facilities for genuine local entrepreneurs. He advised the trainees that there was no substitute for skilled and hard work.

The program was also attended by a member from “Dial Nagaland” an initiative of YouthNet, and interacted with the trainees for placement.

One Khonil Gogoi of New Mohong area in Namsai district died on the spot when a building collapsed on him on Monday evening during the storm, an official report said today.

GUWAHATI, May17 (AGENCIES): The BJPled government in Assam will soon disband the State Madrasa Board and hand over the academic part of it to the Board of Secondary Education. The Sanskrit Board will also be dissolved, state Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted late Tuesday evening. Assam had set up the Madrasa Education Board in 1934, with nine schools under it. After I n d e p e n d e n c e, i t wa s renamed as State Madrasa Education Board, Assam, and has over 700 madrasas under it.

A G A R T A L A , M AY 17 (IANS): The Tripura government on Wednesday created 13,000 nonteaching posts in two departments – ostensibly to “accommodate” 10,323 teachers facing the axe due to a March 29 Supreme Court verdict.

Announcing the decision of the council of ministers, which held a meeting on Wednesday, Education and Law Minister Tapan Chakraborty said that 12,000 non-teaching posts were created under the Education Department and 1,000 posts under the Social Welfare and Social Education Department. “ T h e g ove r n m e n t would soon start the process to recruit eligible people for these 13,000 newly created posts. However, applicants for the 12,000 posts under Education Department must have five years teaching experience,” Chakraborty told reporters.

“Those 10,323 government teachers losing jobs after December 31 due to the apex court verdict can apply for the newly-created 13,000 posts,” he said.

He said that as all the 13,000 posts are for

non-teaching jobs, they would not fulfil many of the criteria laid down in the Right to Education Act. The Left Front government in Tripura was placed in an awkward situation after the Supreme Court terminated the jobs of 10,323 government teachers.

“Considering all aspects and to overcome the situation that arose after the Supreme Court verdict, the Tripura government in a significant step created 13,000 posts in two depar tments to accommodate 10,323 teachers and to protect their jobs,” a senior minister told IANS on condition of anonymity.

The Supreme Court on March 29 upheld the Tripura High Court order to ter minate the jobs of 10,323 teachers, but allowed them to continue in service till December 31. The court asked the state government to frame a new Employment Policy

by April 30, to initiate fresh recruitment by May 31 and complete it by December 31. The Supreme Court allowed all ser ving teachers, candidates not selected and others to participate by relaxing

A I Z AW L , M AY 1 7 (AGENCIES): The Mizoram gover nment has decided to sensitize security officials at the Lengpui airport to prevent

the age limit but subject to possession of other required qualifications.

The Supreme Court order came on three special leave petitions filed by the Tripura government, the terminated serving teachers and aggrieved job seekers.

The Tripura High Court division bench headed by then Chief Justice Deepak Kumar Gupta (now elevated to Supreme Court) terminated the jobs of these teachers citing irregularities.

The newly created non-teaching posts include Academic Counsellor (1,200 posts), Student Counsellor (3,400), School Library Assistant (1,500), Hostel Warden (300) and School Assistant (5,600) a nd E a r ly C hil d ho o d Coordinator (1,000).

The Minister said the applicants for the post of Academic Counsellor must hold Post Graduate degree, while for the posts of Student Counsellor, School Library Assistant, Hostel Warden, candidates must be at least Graduate, while for the remaining posts the qualification would be secondary and higher secondary degree.

AAPSU reiterates demand, threaten movement

ITANAGAR, May, 17 (AGENCIES): The All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) has reiterated its 17-point charter of demands which was sent to the state government.

The Union said that it will be compelled to launch an indefinite democratic movement against the state government if the response is not given on the issues.

The demands include regular calendar for recruitment process conducted by the Arunachal Public Service Commission; rationalization of teacherstudent ratio; uniformity and reduction of BEd existing fee structure in colleges;

introduction of government BEd college; implementation of sanctioned subjects in government colleges; implementation of the R a s h t r i ya U c h c h a t t a r Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA); establishment of subregional CBSE centre, and improvement of the health sector.

The Union has also sought the status quo of engineering wings of Education, Tourism and Sports & Youth affairs de par tments, while adding that the state government should create more manpower in the departments to solve the constraints.

3 ACS officials sent to judicial custody GUWAHATI, MAY 17 (AGENCIES): The special judges’ court on Tuesday sent three arrested Assam Civil Service (ACS) officials to judicial custody after they completed their 14-day police custody.

Special public prosecutor in the case, advocate Bijon Mahajan, said the court will take up the matter on May 30.

Bhaskar Jyoti Dev Sarma, Amrit Sarma and Bhaskar Dutta, all appointed as circle officers, were arrested on May 3 for allegedly getting selected in the civil service by paying hefty amount of money to the prime accused in the case, former Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) chairman Rakesh Paul.

Sources said during police interrogation, the trio revealed that they had paid around Rs 40 lakh to Paul for getting selected in the APSC exam illegally.

During a police raid at Paul’s residence, the trio’s duplicate answerscripts were seized.

Paul allegedly had given them opportunity to rewrite their papers at his home so that their marks can be manipulated. The trio were selected in 2013. They were jointly interrogated along with Paul inside the Central Jail campus during which the latter had reportedly threatened a police official on Saturday. “They (ACS officials) have disclosed several names involved in the cash-for-job scam.

Many other answerscripts are currently undergoing forensic tests. Several arrests are expected soon,” a source said.

On the other hand, Rakesh and arrested APSC member Samedur Rahman sought the court’s intervention in barring the investigating agencies from giving statements in public domain or before the media which they alleged to be helping in forming public opinion against them. Paul’s prayer has triggered a buzz that the accused was trying to gag the media.

AGARTALA, MAY 17 ( AG E N C I E S ) : D r i n k ing water supply to lakhs of people in Tripura was stopped after ONGC drilling waste spilled over into a key river, officials said here on Wednesday.

“Drilling waste contained with chemical and oil from the ONGC’s abandoned drilling site at Mandai (in Baramura Hill Ranges) was spilling over into Howrah River since Tuesday.

“Immediately we have shut four major water treatment plants and stopped supply of drinking water in the Agartala Municipal Corporation areas and its adjoining areas to prevent people drinking polluted water,” Water and Sanitation Department Chief Engineer Bishu Debbarma told reporters.

He said that the engineers of the Water Supply Department and West district administration officials are testing the water at a regular interval and working

round-the-clock to stop the spillover.

“We expect that the situation would be normal by tonight (Wednesday) or early tomorrow (Thursday). We have also asked the ONGC to take suitable measures to prevent the spillover of drilling waste,” Debbarma said.

The four major water treatment plants, that draw in supply from the Howrah river, cater drinking water to at least six lakh people in Agartala Municipal Corporation, adjoining Ranirbazar Municipal Council and Jirania Nagar Panchayat Areas. Water Resources and Sanitation Minister Ratan Bhowmik, District Magistrate Milind Ramteke, engineers of various departments camping the affected areas and supervising the remedial works.

KAAC polls: BJP, Congress declare list; AGP to go solo

GUWAHATI, MAY 17 (PTI): Assam cabinet on Wednesday decided to set up Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) in the state at a cost of over Rs. 155 crore for promoting agri-education and realise second green revolution in the region.

A decision to this effect was taken at the Union Cabinet meeting, headed

by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The first IARI was set up in the national capital way back in 1967.

The Modi government announced plans to set up four such institutes the Budget 2014-15.

“The work to set up an IARI in Ranchi (Jharkhand) has started.

The IARI-Assam was delayed as the previous government did not give land.

The current (Sarbananda) Sonowal government has given 587 acres of land and work will start,” said Union minister Piyush Goyal.

“The IARI-Assam would focus more on research activities and will teach 67 MSc students and 106 PhD students,” stated Goyal, adding, “It will promote research in agriculture and benefit eight Northeastern states.”

AGP to go solo

Taking a new turn in Assam politics, The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), the alliance of ruling BJP, on Wednesday announced that the party would contest the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) elections alone.

The elections are scheduled to be held on June 12.

According to the party, the candidates list for the elections would be announced on Thursday. The party also disclosed that it would contest in all the 26 KAAC constituencies.

It is to be mentioned that, the last date of filing nomination is May 19, scrutiny of nomination papers will take place on May 20. The last date of withdrawal of candidature is May 22. The counting of votes will take place on June 17.

MPC opposes Aadhaar enrolment drive in M’lya SHILLONG, MAY 17 (AGENCIES): The Meghalaya People’s Committee on Aadhaar on Wednesday asked the state government to stop Aadhaar enrolment drive and to withdraw such activities with immediate effect.

In a letter to Chief Minister Mukul Sangma after reports suggested that Aadhaar enrolment would resume from this month in East Khasi Hills district, reminded Dr Sangma about the Supreme Court’s interim order that Aadhaar is not “mandatory” for getting benefits under the welfare schemes.

The People’s Committee noted that a constitutional bench of the apex court is considering the legal validity of Aadhaar on the ground of right to privacy.

Guwahati May 17 (AGENCIES): Construction of a 120 km road has been commenced by India inside Myanmar.This road is part of the India-MyanmarThailand Trilateral Highway.The road is expected to provide a massive boost to surface connectivity and trade between India and the rest of Southeast Asia that would accelerate the Act East Policy.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has been appointed as technical executing agency for upgradation of the Kalewa-Yargi road in the Sagaing region, a project that will cost around Rs 1,177 crore. The present condition of the road is poor and has earthen and gravel top in majority length.

The Trilateral Highway starts from Moreh (Manipur) in India up to Mae Sot in Thailand through Myanmar. Construction of a 130-km-long stretch of the road connecting Moreh (India)/Tamu (Myanmar) to Kalewa in Myanmar has

already been completed by the Border Roads Organisation of India.

The remaining stretch – Yargi-Moywa-MandalayMoe Sot – will be taken up by the governments of Myanmar and Thailand.

R a j C h a k r a b a r t y, Chief General Manager (Northeast), NHAI, Guwahati, who is overseeing the prestigious project, said bids have been invited for the Kalewa-Yargi project. “We expect to start the work on ground after the rainy season. We should be able to complete the project within three years,” he said.

“Currently we do not have direct flight connectivity with most southeast Asian countries. This road will be a vital link between India and Southeast Asia as it will link up to Bangkok and Singapore via Myanmar. It will open landlocked Northeast to Southeast Asia,” he said.

to Myanmar and Thailand and play a crucial role in boosting trade and investment in the three countries.

The team along with the Consulate General of India, Mandalay, had a meeting with officials of the Department of Highways, Ministry of Construction, Myanmar at capital Nay Pyi Taw. The Myanmar Government committed all help for successful implementation of the project. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), India and Department of Highways (DoH) of the Ministry of Construction, Myanmar are nodal agencies for implementation of this project.

Over-speeding vehicles in Kaziranga to be penalized GUWAHATI, May 17 (AGENCIES): Any vehicle found over-speeding inside the Kaziranga National Park will have to pay an environment compensation of Rs 5,000 besides challan under the Motor Vehicles (MV) Act, the National Green Tribunal said.

A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar passed the order after the director of the park, who was present before it, informed it that four animals have died since January this year despite installation of sensor- operated automated

traffic barriers to prevent these deaths.

“Why have these animals died despite installation of barriers. You should take effective measures to stop these animal casualties.

“Every vehicle which is challaned for over-speeding will have to pay an environment compensation of Rs 5,000 per accident over and above the challan as prescribed under the MV Act,” the bench said.

The use of CBI and IT by various political party governments against known foes in India is as old as the nation’s history. P.Chidambaram has been voicing and writing against the policies of the Modi government and they may have embarrassed and angered the government. The raids on the premises linked to the Chidambaram father-son duo are believed to be related to the ‘manipulating a tax probe’ against INX Media owned by Indrani and Peter Mukherjee.

It was also alleged that Karti Chidambaram was the beneficiary of the deal with INX Media after the finance ministry headed by P.Chidambaram in then UPA government permitted conditions to receive investments from Mauritius, a country known to be a tax haven for financial wheelerdealers. CBI had registered an FIR on charges of criminal conspiracy, cheating, receiving illegal gratification, influencing public servants and criminal misconduct. In another development, Income Tax department carried out raids on around 22 locations in Delhi and nearby areas on charges of alleged Benami deals worth Rs 1,000 crore linked to RJD chief Lalu Prasad and others. To the CBI plea, the Supreme Court has ordered that Lalu will have to stand separate trial in four fodder scam cases against him. The fodder scam relates to the illegal withdrawal of around Rs1,000 crore by the Bihar animal husbandry department from various districts during Prasad’s tenure as chief minister from 1990 to 1997. It is not known as to how much evidence was collected during the raids on the premises linked to the Chidambarams but even if there isn’t much, the evidence from raids on the premises of INX Media would be telling enough.

The raids on Lalu Yadav’s premises have certainly led the sleuths to unearth more evidence of benami transactions in order to evade taxes and hide sources of income. No one can challenge the duty of the law in pursuing the corrupt. However, by modifying a key provision in the Income Tax Act with retrospective effect from April 1, 1962, the Modi government has seemingly backtracking on a promise finance minister Arun Jaitley had made two years ago that the NDA government would not backdate legislative amendments.

The retrospective amendment to the Finance Bill 2017 - with a roughly 55-year retrospective effect - raises the scary prospect that tax sleuths could raid assessees based on a rumour, canard, whim or unsubstantiated suspicion without having to disclose to anyone the source or the basis of the information on which the operation was ordered.

It will potentially allow the taxman to go on a fishing expedition to unearth concealed income and assets, fanning fears of “tax terrorism”. In sharp contrast, the CBI has closed the cases against the Karnataka Reddys in the multi-core mining scam.

Such dichotomy does indicate that the long arm of the law may be more intent on grabbing political foes of the government.

This is happening. So we as the Church can either shake our heads and turn our backs on culture, or we can find new ways to engage people in this post-Christian era with the Gospel. But doing that will take getting outside of our comfort zones and investing more time and energy into connecting with people who know nothing of Christ.

The reward will be worth it, but we have to do the work first. Spend time getting to know the nonChristians around you. Engage them as friends, live out the love of Christ, and let the Gospel flow from there!

hether stone pelting in Kashmir is at the behest of Pakistan or it is a response to fundamentalists’ call, the fact remains that the valley is disturbed. Scores of schools have been burnt and there is a fear in the mind of students that they would be punished if they were to attend classes. The separatists are said to be leading a movement to boycott the studies. The result is that the students are finding it hard to prepare and appear in exams which the rest of the country is having peacefully. The separatists should realize that a political movement cannot and should not make students helpless and let them suffer. The fallout of the agitation is that the tourists’ inflow has reduced. So much so, Syed Ali Shah Geelani has led processions through the streets of Srinagar to assure the tourists that they would be protected in all eventualities. of view but in the process the Dal Lake shikaras and Nagin Bagh’s dongas are not getting business. An ordinary Kashmiri is suffering. Even otherwise, the state’s economy has been badly hit. Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti does not seem to have any clue to the situation. She has said many a time that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the only person who can solve the crisis in Kashmir.

She is probably underlining the alliance between her People’s Democratic Party and the BJP which is ruling at the centre. New Delhi should, however, analyze why a person like Shabbir Shah, once pro-India, has turned himself to be proazadi. Probably, he does not find the space which he direly needs to direct his affairs in the valley. The BJP has had no contact with persons like him. The same is the case with Yashin Malik who wanted a solution within Indian Union. But New Delhi has stretched Article 370 in such a way that the power has come to be concentrated at New Delhi. Kashmir also feels strongly about New Delhi’s

step-motherly treatment meted out to their Urdu language. And it is generally believed that Urdu is languishing in neglect because it is considered the language of Muslims.

If New Delhi were to own and encourage Urdu, it Kuldip would give the Kashmiris at least one less reason to feel aggrieved. People are generally poor like in the rest of India and they want jobs which they realise would come only through development, including tourism.

Till recently, the Kashmiris were opposed to pick up the gun to defy New Delhi.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh has been relentlessly pursuing some method to help Kashmir return to normalcy. But, unfortunately, the Kashmiris have a feeling that what the militants are trying to do gives them identity. Therefore, the criticism that there is no resistance to the militants from within the valley should be understood as part of alienation. It is unfortunate that New Delhi did not give the package which it had announced after the dev-

astation through floods in Kashmir a couple of years ago. There was no criticism by the media or political parties. No leader has pointed out to New Delhi that it had reneged from the promise. All these are interpreted in Kashmir Nayar as deliberate signs of cursory attitude. I still believe that the 1953 agreement which gave India the control of defence, foreign affairs and communications can improve the situation in the state.

The Kashmiri youth who are angry over the state’s status as well the situation can be won over by the assurance that the entire Indian market would be available to them for business or services. But this alone may not do. New Delhi will have to withdraw all the acts relating to fields other than defence, foreign affairs and communications. The Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act which was promulgated some 26 years ago to meet the extraordinary situation in the state is still in operation.

Were the government to withdraw the act, it would

placate the Kashmiri on the one hand and make the security forces more responsible on the other.

The National Conference waged a long war to get rid of Maharaja Hari Singh and had an icon like Sheikh Abdullah to provide secular and democratic rule to the state. But the party suffered defeat in the assembly polls due to its proximity to New Delhi. The PDP won because its founder, Mufti Mohammad Sayyed, kept distance from New Delhi, without alienating it. The Kashmiris have voted for the untried PDP-BJP alliance because the combination gave them a feeling of identity. Omar Farooq Abdullah had to pay the price of National Conference’s image of being pro-Delhi.

Kashmir’s links with India are too close to challenge it beyond a point. Still the opposition, however small, gives the Kashmiris a vicarious satisfaction of defying New Delhi. Lord Cyril Radcliffe did not attach any importance to Kashmir. He was a judge in London who drew the line between India and Pakistan to establish two

separate countries. He told me many years later during an interview that he never imagined that Kashmir would assume as much importance as it did. I recalled this instance when I was in Srinagar a couple of years ago to preside over the first anniversary of an Urdu magazine. Urdu has been unceremoniously ousted from all the states, including Punjab where it was the main language until some years ago. In fact, the language lost its importance in India soon after Pakistan made it the national language. Normalcy is also a state of mind. The Kashmiris must feel themselves that their identity is not under attack and that New Delhi realizes the importance of what the Kashmiris desire. What New Delhi has to appreciate is that the Kashmiris’ desire to distance themselves from India may not be considered any meaningful transfer of power from New Delhi to Srinagar. Yet the impression that the Kashmiris rule themselves has to be sustained whatever the cost.

The roads which used to take one hour in the past now need 3 hours. Roads between Zunheboto and Mokockchung and roads between Mon and Tizit are terrible. There is no road worth calling a road. At the end of the journey when we meet our brothers and sisters they welcome us and the first words they all utter is “Rasta to enika hie ase”- road is like that. 2018 election is a challenge to every person in Nagaland.

It is either we change or perish together like fools under the corrupt governance. They have already looted public funds for the last 15 years. Now they are divided and are struggling for power to further corrupt. We cannot expect anything more than bribery and looting of public development funds from power mongers. Whatever they may say, their deeds in 15 years’ rule have proven that they are shameless corrupt persons.

They are responsible for changing Nagas from honesty to dishonesty. They have changed

life style from hardworking system to commission agent and extortion. From unknown sources of income, people have acquired land and high buildings are rising. All these have happened during just 15 years of NPF-BJP Government. Corruption began from the top politicians to bureaucrats down to the lowest grades, and VCCs and VDBs are forced to sign blank cheques.

People in the villages have lost hope of development and that they would deliver welfare schemes. They also have lost hope, that after election, they will ever get opportunity to meet the elected representatives, not to speak of taking care of their welfare. MGNREGA funds are not heard of anymore excepting for asking them to sign blank cheques. Monthly Civil supplies such as rice, wheat, sugar and Kerosene oil don’t reach the villages. School buildings don’t have doors and windows.

Hospitals and dispensaries are without employees. There is neither medicine in the dispensaries and hospitals nor the machineries to diagnose. School teachers are short in almost all Village schools. Backdoor appointments, CAG report and

failure to solve the political problem are all forgotten.

People don’t complain any more. They just don’t believe that the government can ever deliver or solve the problems.

There is complete political polarisation in the state. People have also lost hope in NPF and BJP seeing the divided house of NPF-BJP Govt. (NPF (Right), NPF (Left) and BJP). They will be gunning for each other with their amassed wealth. The vote bank will be divided into three sections. Election is just seven months away from notification.

The challenges, we face in this election are, to stop deep rooted corruption, to stop RSSBJP from persecuting the Christian faith and to provide clean and God-fearing Government and governance. Even nonChristians are telling our society that the choice is of conscience over money-power.

There are 12 disciples in our society. There are the Judases who sold Jesus for 30 silver coins and there are the Achans who stole the forbidden wealth of Jericho, in our society.

In which way you want to perish is your choice.

The church and state going side by side: A way forward for just-politics

T

he relation between the church and the state is considered elusive because of various opinions and theological stands that are been constructed by several scholars and theologians. The intent of this article is to present the church’s involvement in politics as to build a just and harmonious society. Thus inadvertently the Baptist’s position on the Church and State relation is jeopardized, but for a considerable reasons on the influence of theologians, modern politics and the context (Nagaland).

A state is a type of polity that is an organized political community living under a single system of government. States may be or may not be sovereign. E.g., the state of Nagaland is a political craft of the government of India. Although the earthly Government is not the realized city of God, it is considered a divine authority instituted on earth. St. Augustine in this line commented, that the worldly city includes an emphasis on the tensions, frictions, competitions of interest and overt conflicts to which every human community is exposed. Nevertheless, the love of the city of God can overcome the city of this world. With love as the driving force and a substance for the leavening, the influence of a higher value upon a lower loyalty or love, it can transform and progressively resolve various accommodations of interest.

Karl Barth remarked, the State is an “external means of grace.” It is the sign, set up by God’s revelation, of concrete and visible order of life by which and in which, on the basis of accomplished reconciliation, we are summoned to serve our neighbor. Obedience is required of a Christian to give what belongs to the state in the form of being a good neighbor and a sincere

and consistent citizen. This obedience is not a blind yes, but obeying man (state) in obedience to God. Barth noted, both the state and the church must exist together since they express equal similarities temporally in their structure, yet both are divinely instituted and under one power of Jesus Christ. Dietrich Bonhoeffer said, the State is a product of human nature and therefore our ability to live in society is derived from creation. The state is the highest development of the natural society.

Thus all three great theologians proposed the State as an ordained institution in the world.

For Augustine we must act in love and with the power of love we can make greater and higher influence on earth. Barth’s approach is based on grace; we must act with gratitude and live a worthy life of being a good neighbor. For Bonhoeffer, in Christ all things have been created, whether powers or principalities and therefore the world bears the authority of God. With regard to the State and Church relationship, Romans 13:1-7 becomes the key contending text juxtaposing binary views. Scholars who are in favor of the idea that Christians owe their government allegiance refer to this text and perpetuate the view that the government is a divine authority instituted by God. John Howard Yoder claims that Rom. 13 does not center on the teaching of the church and state relationship. Others consider the state is so corrupt that Christians should not be a part of it. They should continue to be good citizens but desist from matters relating to the state or politics.

Crime against women

woman is one of the most precious being on this planet but these days people are losing their respect towards women and are ill treating them without any concern. Crime against women has been reported to be on the rise among the other categories and types of crimes.

Rape, cybercrime, trafficking, domestic violence, dowry, sexual harassment- are some of the many crimes that have been committed against our own sisters and mothers.

The most shocking fact is that some of these crimes have been committed by their own kins; it is ridiculous to know what the world has become.

It has always been said in conferences, protests, public gatherings that strict actions are to be taken against anyone who commits such crimesshouldn’t it be like Crimes shouldn’t take place in the first place? Everyone condemns crimes against women and protest with all their might but how often do these people do anything in order to ensure that there is a safer environment for women.

It is almost impossible to go out at night without the fear on being molested or teased, and there are silly accusations made against the women that they are not supposed to go out late. These people are of the view that crimes increase because girls don’t dress appropriately or behave properly.

Referring back to the Delhi Gang Rape Case which is also known as the NirbhayaRape Incident which took place in Delhi on the 16th of December 2012, one of the accused blamed the victim, Lt. Jyoti Singh Pandey, that she should not have been out so late and tried to justify the whole incident by saying that she should have just let the rape happen instead of trying to fight and defend herself.

To be honest anyone has the right to go out whenever they want considering that they are not doing any harm to the society. Independent women who choose to work late at night are to be respected for their dedication and not being taken for advantage, there is a certainty that the wave of hatred that some women have for men might reduce if only the rate of crimes reduce.

It is painful to see someone who is struggling to be themselves, to do

something but is held back with the fear of being taken down. Second thoughts for going somewhere, wearing something, doing something should not be available, we are free to doanything we want; as it is our fundamental freedom. But why this dome of danger- where all the women are unsafe.

These crimes not only restrict to the late-night category but it is seen in almost every possible placeschools, work place, streets, and even at one’s own home. Crimes against the female sex does not limit to any age, race, region or qualification; it happens to infants and senior citizens, illiterate and highly qualified, this has to stop!

A No-More sign should be handed out publicly and opinions should be voiced out without being afraid of the consequences that are yet to come, it will take a long time for full proof safety to be initiated everywhere but then it also depends on the women power to grow stronger, not to fear, and be sure in whatever choices we make.

Steps and effective measures are to be taken immediately because too much damage has been done and we cannot afford to lose more. After the Nirbhaya case, Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code has been active but this has not stopped the crimes rates from increasing.

The cases that are filed should be attended until justice is served, help in the form counselling and therapy should be provided to the victim and the unnecessary nuisance created by the public and at times the media should be stopped. The individual is in a state of trauma and it will be a difficult time for her to move on face the world but with the nosey disturbance created by anyone who is curious can cause more damage.

Hence, lets treat everyone respectfully and be brave to support whoever is in need, being a feminist does not mean giving out hate to men or placing the female sex at a higher pedestal; it just means to support the fight for equality, to make a safer environment, to let everything be in peace and the most important need- to live in harmony and think about the welfare of the society.

Discussions generally centre around the coming general election in almost any social gathering. These days, there is much talk about floating of a new political party in Nagaland as appeared in local dailies.

Of course, every party has its own political ideology and agenda and would naturally try to woo the people. It would be interesting to watch the tussle for power among the political parties and their allied partners if any. At the end of the day, any political party must keep in mind to work for the people and state. It is high time to get down to reality and be more humble.

Bring law to address triple talaq, SC suggests

New Delhi, May 17 (IANS): The Supreme Court on Wednesday suggested that the government could put in place a law to deal with issues including triple talaq instead of waiting for it to decide on the matter judicially, and wondered whether it is possible to give the Muslim woman the option to oppose instant divorce.

“We may or may not (decide the issue), but you do,” said the constitution bench headed by Chief Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar to Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi as the latter urged the court to step in a situation where there is no legislation.

Noting the government’s insistence that the cour t should first r ule against instant triple talaq and then it would bring a law, the bench asked why the government was not making a law instead of asking the court to decide the matter.

Besides the Chief Justice, the other judges on the bench are Justice Kurian Joseph, Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman, Justice Uday Umesh Lalit and Justice S. Abdul Nazeer As the court made it clear that the government could not shun its responsibility, Attorney General

Earlier in the morning, the bench asked the All India Muslim Personal Law Board if it was possible to give the woman the option, before she gives her consent to nikaah, that the marriage she was entering into would not be dissolved through instant triple talaq.

The court suggested whether a clause can be added on the Nikaah Nama to say that the marriage can’t be dissolved by the husband by pronouncing instant triple talaq.

As Rohatgi referred to the Vishakha guidelines that were framed by the top court to protect women at the workplace in the absence of any law, Justice Kurian said that it was in the domain of a statute and not the constitution. In an

obvious comparison to the steps taken to reform Hindu practices, when the Attorney General referred to the abolition of Sati, infanticide and Devadasi system, Justice Kurian said that all those (abolitions) were legislatively decided.

“Did the court do it?

No, legislation got rid of it,” Chief Justice Khehar observed. The court described the issue before it as something not between the majority and the minority communities but an intra-minority issue of tussle between Muslim men and women - which he said was a tussle between haves (men) and have-nots (women).

Describing instant triple talaq as a “pernicious practice”, the AG urged the court to “step in as a guardian of the fundamental rights”.

He further argued that even under Article 25 of the Constitution which guarantees right to propagate and practice religion, the core religious values were subject to part III of the Constitution spelling out the fundamental rights.

Recalling the horror and trauma at the time of Partition, AG said that Article 25 was incorporated in the Constitution to assure everyone that the core val-

ues of their religious beliefs would not be touched by the State.

Senior counsel Indira Jaising, appearing for one of the petitioners challenging the constitutional validity of triple talaq, in her rejoinder arguments said that the court was looking at the issue in the context of 67 years when fundamental rights came into force and not 1,400 years since the birth of Islam.

Telling the court that the impact of the divorce was civil involving her maintenance and shelter, Jaising said the court should address the social consequences of divorce as women lose everything.

Citing equality before law and equal protection of law under Article 14, Jaising said the State is obliged not to recognise any discrimination between men and women on the grounds of religious beliefs and practices. The bench in the morning asked the All India Muslim Personal Law Board if it was possible to give the woman the option that the marriage would not be dissolved through triple talaq and whether their advisory would be followed by the Qazis on the ground.

“You can incorporate this option in the Nikaah

Nama before she gives consent to nikaah to say no to triple talaq,” Chief Justice Khehar asked the AIMPLB. Responding to the suggestion, Senior counsel Yusuf Hatim Muchchala said the advisory of the AIMPLB is not binding on the Qazis to follow.

However, Muchchala, who is also a member of the Executive Committee of the AIMPLB, referred to a resolution passed by the AIMPLB conclave at Lucknow wherein the Board asked the community to boycott the men who take recourse to instant triple talaq.

The conclave took place on April 14, 2017.

He told the bench that they would consider the suggestion in all humility and look at it. The suggestion to AIMPLB by the court came in the course of the hearing of a batch of petitions challenging the constitutional validity of triple talaq.

AIMPLB, has in the course of its submissions while saying that triple talaq was permissible, described it as a “sin” and “undesirable”. The AIMPLB has said that the community needed time to change and reform itself on its own without any outside interference or dictate.

Kulbhushan case: ICJ to pronounce verdict today NEW DELHI, MAY 17 (AGENCIES): The International Court of Justice (ICJ) will pronounce its verdict on the Kulbhushan Jadhav case on Thursday, three days after it heard arguments presented by India and Pakistan.

According to government sources, the international court will give its verdict around 3.30 pm (IST) tomorrow.

During its submission, India had demanded the immediate suspension+ of Jadhav’s death sentence, expressing fears that Pakistan could execute him+ even before the hearing at the ICJ was over.

India’s forceful submission+ was made as the ICJ began hearing the case of the 46-year-old former Navy officer, who was arrested on March 3 last year and sentenced to death+ by a Pakistani military court on charges of espionage and subversive activities.

The Jadhav case was taken to the world court on May 8 by India, which accused Pakistan of violating the Vienna Convention and conducting a “farcical trial” for convicting Jadhav without a “shred of evidence”.

Haryana govt gives in to girl students’ protest

The students, who have been protesting since May 10, said they would not give up until their demand was met.

Chandigarh, May 17 (IANS): With around 10 girls falling unconscious and rushed to hospital following their indefinite hunger strike, the Haryana government on Wednesday gave in and announced that the government school in their village will be upgraded.

The girls in Gothra Tappa Dahina village in Rewari started their protest eight days back, seeking upgradation of their school till Class 12, saying that they could not go to attend higher classes in a school in a nearby village as they were molested by youth on the way.

Following the announcement of upgradation by Education Minister Ram Bilas Sharma, the protesting girl students ended their hunger strike, saying they were satisfied by the

decision. The school at Gothra Tappa Dahina has 70 students each in classes 9 and 10. As per norms, a high school must have at least 150 students in both to be upgraded to Class 12 but the state government has given the rules the go-by in this case.

“Sanction of the Governor of Haryana is hereby accorded to upgrade the Government High School Gothra Tappa Dahina (Rewari) to the level of Government Senior Secondary School w.e.f. session 201718. SNE will be conveyed in due course,” read a notification issued by the Additional Chief Secretary, School Education.

Sharma said that a principal has been appointed for the school and admissions will start for the 2017-18 session on Thursday.

NEW DELHI, MAY 17 (PTI): The government is moving ahead with further opening of print media, construction and retail sectors to foreign investments, and detailed deliberations in this regard were held in the finance ministry on Wednesday.

The commerce and industry ministry may soon approach the Union Cabinet to get the final approval on the proposals, sources said.

According to them, the government is considering to relax foreign direct investment (FDI) norms in certain areas of print media.

Currently, government allows foreign investment in areas such as printing of newspapers and publishing of scientific magazines with certain conditions and FDI caps. There is also a proposal to ease the policy

Haryana wants police officers from northeast Chandigarh, May 17 (IANS): The Haryana Police has proposed engaging police officers from north-eastern states amid rising incidents of crime against people from the region, especially women.

Har yana Director General of Police B.S. Sandhu told the media here that a proposal would be sent to the government to take officers on deputation from the north-east.

“These officers would be appointed as nodal officers in police stations to tackle the problems being faced by persons from those states, presently living in Gur ugram and Faridabad,” he said.

Sandhu said police had announced a reward of Rs 2 lakh for information leading to the arrest of the accused in the recent Gurugram rape case.

BJP govt has failed on all fronts: Cong New Delhi, May 17 (IANS): The Congress on Wednesday slammed the BJP-ruled central government and said it had “completely failed” on all fronts no matter which parameter was used to evaluate its performance.

Talking to reporters here, Congress leader Manish Tewari said there were five universally accepted benchmarks to evaluate any government’s performance and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government failed in all of them. He said the five parameters include social cohesion, internal security, economic development, international relations and commitment to institutionalism. “On each of these counts, the report card of the government is more than blotted.” Tewari said that social cohesion and social balance had “completely gone for a toss” in the past three years.

ACAUT clarifies statement

DIMAPUR, MAY 17 (NPN): ACAUT Nagaland through its media cell has sought to clear the air over its press statement, published in local dailies on April 24, 2017, wherein “misconception” was created that ACAUT had endorsed the reduction of the employee salary tax by NSCN (I-M) from 24% to 12%.

Making its stand clear, ACAUT clarified that under no circumstances had it endorsed the reduction nor did it endorse any form of taxation by any ‘Naga factional groups’, adding that it was still resolute and firm in the people’s demand for ‘one government one tax.’

ACAUT stated that its previous press release had only welcomed the decision of the collective leadership of NSCN (I-M) to scrap the ‘Syndicate’ and ‘dealership’ system.

Asserting it cannot relax on one government one tax, ACAUT said its “directive” still remain that no businesses/government servants or any individual would pay any form of tax to any Naga factional groups till the people’s aspirations were fulfilled.

New Delhi, May 17 (IANS): In a major decision to fast-track India’s domestic nuclear power programme, the union cabinet on Wednesday approved construction of 10 units of indigenous Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors (PHWR).

“The cabinet has approved installation of 10 indigenously built PWHRs of 700 MW each,” Union Minister Piyush Goyal said at a media briefing after meeting of the Cabinet presided over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Goyal, who is union Minister for Power and Coal, said the decision will result in significant augmentation of the country’s nuclear power generation capacity. He said India’s installed nuclear power capacity is 6,780 MW from 22 operational plants, and another 6,700 MW is expected to to be generated by 202122 through projects under construction.

The government had in July 2014 set a target of taking nuclear power capacity to over 14,000 MW by 2024.

The decision on construction 10 PHWRs comes days before the Modi government completes three years in office.

Common pest that infest maize crop at different stages of the crop and the pest management practices that can help in reducing the damage caused to the crop or the yield loss were discussed. Foliar application of micronutrients in vegetable crops, its role in providing essential micronutrients for the plants growth and improving the yield of crops and also the spraying schedule in different crops were explained.

Later, preparation and the method of spraying were demonstrated to the farmers. Altogether, 15 farmers attended the programme.

Micronutrients were distributed to the participating farmers.

DIMAPUR: Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA) has been conducting various activities in different parts of the state, as part of their programme for the welfare of farming community.

Nuiland block: ATMA Dimapur (Niuland Block) conducted demonstration programme at Hevikhe village on May 12. Resource person Demalu Hasnusa, BTM (Niuland block) spoke on the topic “package of practices for maize”. He elaborated on planting methods, sowing, seed rate, treatment, tillage, nutrient, water and pests’ management.

Sentibenla, ATM (Niuland Block) spoke on the topic “Pests Management of Cucurbits” and mentioned different kinds of pests and methods to control them.

She advised the farmers to pick the right time to plant maize and to make a serious commitment to improve soil health by recycling corn residue which could enhance productivity by improving nutrient availability. The problems faced by the farmers in cultivating cardamom were addressed by resource persons AI, Chingin and BTM Nunghothung.

Application of vermin compost on crops and management practices of cardamom were also demonstrated.

Chingin Konyak also gave hands on demonstration on nursery bed preparation and highlighted on the importance of correct spacing and time of planting the crops.

The programme was chaired

by ATM Mon Mhonchumo Khuvung. Altogether 30 farmers benefitted from the programme.

Jakhama village: A booklet on “Documentation on Zabo Farming” at Jakhama village by ATMA Kohima district was released by Helie Rupreo, director of Agriculture & SNO (ATMA), Nagaland on May 2 at DAO conference hall. According to DIPR report, the director exhorted the farmers’ friend present, about the status of agriculture production in Nagaland. Taking the example of Pfustero, he encouraged the farmers to take up “Zabo farming”.

He encouraged the farmers to focus on maize, foxtail millet, jobstear, brown rice, sticky rice etc which were not found in other regions.

DIMAPUR: Mon Forest Division Mon organized a program on “man-animal conflict mitigation awareness campaign� at Naginimora on May 16.

Chief guest chairman, Nagaland Pollution Control Board, Meyipokyim in his speech highlighted the scenario of humananimal conflicts occurring in different parts of the country and how this problem could be mitigated by reducing the interface between men and animals.

He also emphasized on the intricate relationships of human and wildlife by citing an example that without honey bees, mankind

would be diminished from this planet within a span of 50 years.

NVCO Tseminyu reaffirms ultimatum on power deptt

DIMAPUR: The NVCO Tseminyu Unit has reiterated its 10-day ultimatum served on the Power department on April 24, wherein the unit demanded immediate restoration of the damaged feeder transformer, transfer and posting of JE (Power) Tseminyu Sub Division and installation of 1MVA transformer for Tseminyu Town.

In a press note, president NVCO Tseminyu Unit John Semy and general secretary, Asao Sebastian, accused the Power department Wokha division of “step motherly treatment� for its lackadaisical attitude towards the people of Tseminyu Sub Division. The unit claimed that even after eight days after the feeder transformer broke down and despite several appeals, the Wokha division “did not bother to lift the damaged transformer�. Therefore, NVCO Tseminyu Unit, at its own expenditure, arranged a vehicle to carry the damaged transformer to central store Dimapur on the ninth day, the unit stated.

However, the unit incurred additional expenditure as the transformer was unloaded after holding one more day.

The feeder transformer was reportedly restored on

May 3 only to conk out on May 5.

Ten days passed after the feeder transformed conked out but the department again remain mute, the unit lamented.

The transformer was reportedly taken to central store Dimapur on the eleventh day.

In this regard, the unit while hinting that it was losing patience and faith, asked the department whether the department was judiciously executing its duties.

It demanded to know why the department was not serious towards the demands and appeals made by the people. “Are the NVCOTU in particular and the public in general the second class citizens where the department can do anything according to its whims and fancies keeping aside the genuine appeals and demands?,� it questioned.

Therefore, the unit said it reaffirms its on the appeals made through the print media published on the May 5, saying it was “hoping against hope that the department will deliver justice towards the genuine demands of the organization and provide smooth supply of power to the sub-division without any hiccups�.

G E N E VA , M AY 1 7 (IANS): Highlighting improvements that countries have made with regard to collecting vital statistics, the World Health Organisation on Wednesday said almost half of global deaths are now recorded with a cause.

Of the estimated 56 million deaths globally in 2015, at least 27 million were registered with a cause of death, WHO said.

The global health body -- which released its World Health Statistics, 2017 report on Wednesday -- said the improvement showed nations were monitoring progress towards Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

Among the countries which have shown tremendous improvement towards showing reasons behind deaths are China, Turkey and Iran, where 90 per cent deaths were recorded with detailed cause-of-death information, compared to only five per cent in 1999.

“If countries don’t know what makes people get sick and die, it’s a lot harder to know what to do about it,” said Marie-Paule Kieny, WHO Assistant DirectorGeneral for Health Systems and Innovation.

Despite fears that the leak could endanger a valuable Israeli intelligence asset within the Islamic State group, officials stressed that nothing would change as a result of the extraordinary breach.

he first ever premiere of a Bollywood movie was on Wednesday held in Jammu and Kashmir’s summer capital Srinagar.

‘Sargoshiyan’, shot extensively in Kashmir, is the first Bollywood film shot in the troubled state after separatist violence started in 1989 but is not focused on violence or unrest.

Director Imran Khan said at the event that the movie was about unexplored picturesque locations and the fact that Kashmir remains a safe destination for tourists and film makers.

The premiere was held at the Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Centre on the banks of the Dal Lake.

Lead actors including Imran Khan, Alok Nath, Sara Ali Khan, Tom Altar, Inderneil Sengupta and Hasan Zaidi attended the show. The director thanked the Jammu and Kashmir tourism department and the J&K Bank without whose support he said the movie might not have been made.

‘Sargoshiyan’ is scheduled for release on May 26.

Saliha, a fluent Urdu speaker, explained how she went through a gruelling experience over several months to make it to the final.

The run-up involved working on the weekends, sacrificing annual leave for many months for filming and going to restaurants and cooking almost everyday after work to ensure that she is cooking new dishes and doing the right thing.

“I couldn’t have reached here without putting in a lot of hard work. After I was crowned the MasterChef 2017 champion, I was overwhelmed by the positive feedback -- so many people from Pakistan contacted me to congratulate and to give positive feedback. It’s impossible to describe in words the happiness I have felt.

M A D R I D, M AY 1 7 (IANS): The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) on Wednesday announced it was set to launch a campaign to encourage women to make football the most practised sport in Europe by 2022.

The step, UEFA said, was being taken after a study found that female players have higher levels of selfconfidence.

The study, conducted

by UEFA and a group of specialists to find out the effect of football on the psychological and emotional aspects of females, depended on data provided by 4,128 girls and women aged 13 and over from six countries -- Spain, England, Germany, Denmark, Poland and Turkey, reports Efe citing a posting on the UEFA website on Wednesday.

The research confirmed that football has a greater impact on self-confidence, self-esteem, feelings of fellowship and motivation for teenage girls than other sports. The most important conclusion of the study was that female football players have more confidence than those who do not play and also more than those who are engaged in other sports.

The figures provided

by UEFA said that 80 percent of teenage girls showed more confidence due to playing with a football team, compared with 74 percent of those who practice other sports.

Some 58 percent of the teenagers have overcome lack of self-confidence when playing football, compared to 51 percent of girls who play another sport.
