Road diversion in Kma

D I M A P U R , M AY 1 7 (NPN): In view of the repair works along the National Highway between Kohima and Dimapur, Kohima police have informed commuters that the road has been diverted from Peducha towards 10 Mile, Tsiesema. For Kohima-Dimapur bound vehicles the road has been diverted from Zubza CRPF camp, above Shalom Bible Seminary, to Kiruphema, then to Peducha. In a press note, Sr. SP Kohima also provided second option for down vehicles from Kohima Science College, Jotsoma to Khonoma, Mezoma, Sechuma then Kiruphema. Police also sought the cooperation of all travellers between Kohima and Dimapur and to bear with the inconveniences till repairing work was completed.

has also given out the district-wise appointment data based on the RTI reply. (See table) NC also pointed out that 93% of total contractual appointments were made during 2011-2016 and only 7% were prior to the year 2011. It said the figures clearly indicated that appointments have become monopoly of concerned minister/parliamentary secretary, whether or not there is sanctioned post, whether or not recruitment process is adhered to and whether or not candidates are qualified and deserving. Asserting that it would continue to highlight such extreme cases of backdoor/ questionable appointments, NC also urged the conscious public to react responsibly. The party also appealed to the general public to extend cooperation and support the cause for “preventive as well as curative measures.” It may be mentioned that the NC had also taken on departments like PWD, Police and Rural Development, alleging rampant backdoor appointments particularly non-locals.

World faces massive cryptocurrency attack, bigger than WannaCry: report SAN FRANCISCO/NEW DELHI, MAY 17 (IANS): After facing a massive ‘WannaCrypt’ ransomware attack that exploited a vulnerability in a Microsoft software and hit 150 countries, the same Windows vulnerability (MS17-010) has also been exploited to spread another type of malware that is quietly but fast generating digital cash from machines it has infected. According to a report in The Registrar on Wednesday, tens of thousands of computers globally have been affected by the “Adylkuzz attack” that targets machines, lets them operate and only slows those down to generate digital cash or “Monero” cryptocurrency in the background. “Monero” -- being popularised by North Korea-linked hackers -- is an open-source cryptocurrency created in April 2014 that focuses on privacy, decentralisation and scalability. It is an alternative to Bitcoin and is being used for trading in drugs, stolen credit cards and counterfeit goods. “Initial statistics suggest that this attack may be larger

in scale than WannaCry[pt], because this attack shuts down SMB networking to prevent further infections with other malware (including the WannaCry[pt] worm) via that same vulnerability,” US-based cyber security firm Proofpoint researchers were quoted as saying in the report. This is how a cryptocurrency attack works. The hackers need to mine cryptocurrency using computers/computing devices (IoT included). “Mining of cryptocurrency simply means solving complex cryptography problems designed within the algorithm of a cybercurrency that requires a lot of computing,” Saket Modi, CEO and Co-founder of Delhi-based IT risk assessments provider Lucideus, told IANS. To draw a parallel, there can only be 21 million Bitcoins that can be mined out of which 16 million have already been mined, informed Modi. “Monero”, on the other side, is slightly different than Bitcoin but for simplification’s sake, it can

be assumed that it follows a similar architecture and similar mining process. “Hence, there is a new wave of cyber attacks where the hacker is least interested in the personal information of the victim and instead his only motivation is to gain access to the CPU of the victim’s computer/mobile/ IoT device so that they can use it to mine more currencies (and correspondingly make more money),” Modi told IANS. This looks like something more dangerous than ‘WannaCrypt’ as the victim doesn’t come to know that they have been hacked, but, on the other side, “the good part is that the hacker here is not interested in the victim’s personal data,” Modi told IANS. To achieve this, the hackers find a vulnerability in one of the servers in the targeted organisation or they would infect a website which employees of a targeted organisation often visit.

because of the low level of awareness about malicious software, a senior official looking after West Bengal’s IT security said on Wednesday. The official told PTI that most Indian homes were using pirated Operating Softwares which were never updated, making them more vulnerable to the modern day virus threats like ransomware. “Most Indian homes are vulnerable to Wannacry because of the pirated softwares they use,” the expert said. He was critical about the casual approach adopted by government sectors where old machines were still in use with almost zero backup and no patches were ever applied making them open to such cyber threats. “What we have seen now is only the tip of the iceberg,” the officer cautioned. Suggesting adoption of the old method of keeping important data backed up offline from time to time, the IT security expert warned The country is least that corporates using sync prepared to tackle the ran- mirror backup was useless somware virus ‘WannaCry’ against ransomware.

Media barred

Wednesday’s meeting of the new party was earlier billed as a launch and so media persons were on hand to report the historic event. However, several reporters who went to cover the supposed launching of the new political party Wednesday were prevented from attending the meeting inside Nousi Auditorium of the Resort. Party officials asked media persons to leave the place since the GBM was supposed to be a “closed door meeting”.

to be presidential candidate

NEW DELHI, MAY 17 (AGENCIES): Despite being unwell Congress chief Sonia Gandhi is trying to finalise a name for presidential election. On Wednesday, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) said its leader Sharad Pawar declined the offer of Sonia Gandhi to be the Opposition candidate. “In last month’s meeting, Sonia Gandhi had asked Pawar saheb to be the opposition candidate. However, he refused. He said ‘I should not be considered’,” NCP’s national spokesperson Nawab Malik told IANS. Malik added that Pawar had already said in the past that he was not interested in contesting the election. Gandhi has taken the initiative to talk to leaders

of opposition parties to field a consensus candidate. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called on Gandhi on Tuesday to discuss a consensus candidate for the presidential election. Gandhi has spoken to Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav and RJD chief Lalu Prasad and met JD-U leader and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Communist Party of India-Marxist leader Sitaram Yechury and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah. The term of President Pranab Mukherjee ends in July. The ruling BJP-led National Democratic Alliance, which has clear edge in the presidential election, has not given any inkling so far on its choice of candidate.

Wange, who also heads Arunachal Mountaineering and Adventure Sports Association, said the camp officials, who communicated with Anshu during the expedition, informed him that his wife was “fit and fine” and “keen for the double ascent”. Arunachal Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Wednesday congratulated Jamsenpa for unfurling the

Indian flag at the world’s highest peak for the fourth time. “You made us proud once again Anshu Jamsenpa by unfurling the tricolour for the fourth time atop the world’s highest peak. My heartiest congratulations to our proud daughter of Arunachal. I wish you all success in your future endeavour and may you keep making our nation proud,” Khandu said in a message. “I have been told that Jamsenpa is motivated and

energized enough to try a double ascent if conditions remain favourable. I wish her success and may the almighty bless her to accomplish her dream. It will be a proud moment for Arunachal Pradesh and India,” Khandu said. Arunachal Pradesh Governor P.B. Acharya also congratulated Jamsenpa. Jamsenpa, a mother of two, began scaling at 1.45 a.m. on Saturday and unfurled the national flag atop the Everest at 9 a.m. on Tuesday. Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama had on April 2 flagged off the mountaineer’s double ascent expedition from Guwahati in Assam. She scaled the Mount Everest twice in May 2011 and again scaled the peak on May 18 in 2013. If she is successful with her double ascent this time, Jamsenpa will set a record of climbing the Mt Everest five times.
