KOHIMA, MAY 24 (NPN): Parliamentary secretary for Lotteries and Music Task Force, Khriehu Liezietsu resigned from the membership of the 12th Nagaland Legislative Assembly on May 24, paving way for his father, chief minster Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu to contest the bye-election from the 10Northern Angami-I A/C. It may be mentioned that Dr. Liezietsu took over as the chief minister on February 22, 2017 after T.R. Zeliang stepped down as CM in the face of state wide agitation against the government decision to rush through the ULB polls. Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsü did not contest the 2013 state elections in order to give his son Khriehu an opportunity to contest as NPF candidate. Dr. Liezietsü remained as chairman of the Democratic Alliance of Nagaland, with cabinet status. Khriehu Liezietsu contested from the 10-Northern Angami-I A/ and after winning, was later inducted as parlia-

Prachanda steps down as Nepal PM KATHMANDU, MAY 24 (AGENCIES): Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, the Maoist rebel-turnedpolitician, resigned as Nepal Prime Minister on Wednesday, paving the way for Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba to form the next government as per their agreement last year. Prachanda, 62, who led a decade-long insurgency before entering politics, announced his resignation during a televised address, and will formally put in his papers to President Bidhya Devi Bhandari. “I announce my resignation from the post of the prime minister today, right now, with a pledge to continue being active for the upliftment of the country and the people as a politician, parliamentarian and a citizen,” Prachanda told his countrymen. For the time being, Prachanda will lead a caretaker government till 70year-old Deuba gets parliament approval to form the new administration. On the other hand, Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist-Leninist leader K.P. Oli said that the Prime Minister cannot resign in the middle of local elections and should continue until the second phase of the polls on June 14 is completed.

mentary secretary of YRS, MTF and State Lotteries. When contacted, NLA Speaker Dr. Imtiwapang Aier confirmed to Nagaland Post that he had accepted the resignation of Khriehu, with effect from May 24 and declared the 10 Northern Angami I as vacant. The Speaker said the six-month tenure of Dr. Liezietsu, who was sworn-in on February 22, would end by August 21 after which he has to become a member of the house within the six month period. The by-election is slated to be held before August 21. Dr. Imtiwapang said the decision to hold by election will be intimated to State Election Commission

who would then intimate the Election Commission and after which the notification for the bye-poll would be issued. Khriehu also confirmed to Nagaland Post that he had resigned as an MLA of 10Northern Angami-I A/C. Speculations were doing the rounds that there would be a candidate setup by some party to fight against Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu in the bye-polls. On the other hand there were also indications that the outcome of the byepoll was more or less clear that Dr. Liezietsu would either be uncontested or have a cake walk in case his political rivals decide to foist a candidate.

5 more arrests Modi govt gets high approval rating at 3-year mark in Manchester bombing case BJP TO ORGANIZE COUNTRY-WIDE MODI FEST, JAN KI BAAT L O N D O N, M AY 2 4 (IANS): Five more men were arrested in Manchester today in connection with investigations into the suicide bombing at a concert in the city that killed 22 people as the government indicated that the Libyan-origin bomber may not have acted alone. The new arrests came as the injured toll doubled from 59 to 119. “Three men have been arrested after police executed warrants in South Manchester in connection with the ongoing investigation into Monday night’s horrific attack at the Manchester Arena,” a Greater Manchester Police statement said. Another man was arrested in Wigan near Manchester, taking the total number of arrests to five. A 23-year-old man arrested yesterday in the wake of the attack on Monday night, carried out by a bomber identified as 22-year-old Salman Abedi, has been confirmed as his brother Ismail Abedi. NEW DELHI, MAY 24 (AGENCIES): Both India and Pakistan continue to maintain high operational military readiness along the volatile Line of Control (loC), with daily cross-border firing duels becoming the norm, even as the IAF on Wednesday rejected reports of Pakistani fighter jets flying “over” the Siachen GlacierSaltoro Ridge region. “There has been no airspace violation by Pakistani aircraft in our territory, in Siachen or elsewhere,” said an IAF officer on Wednesday. Indian troops, incidentally, control almost all the dominating heights, ranging from 16,000 to 22,000-feet, in the Saltoro Ridge region, with Pakistani soldiers being far away from the actual Siachen Glacier. A top Army officer, in turn, said though the “pre-emptive and punitive fire assaults” will continue to be conducted across the 778-km LoC to stem infiltration as part of the overall counterterrorism strategy, it was “not a

war-like situation” as of now. “Infiltration attempts, backed by the Pakistan Army-ISI combine, are increasing with the snow melting in the mountain passes. This calls for even more pro-active counterterror operations,” he added. This came after Pakistani media reports on Wednesday claimed the country’s Mirage fighters had carried out high and low-altitude sorties in the Siachen as part of air combat exercises, while all forward operating airbases had also been activated for any eventuality. On a visit to the Qadri forward airbase at Skardu on Wednesday, Pakistan Air Force chief Air Chief Marshal Sohail Aman was quoted as saying: “The nation should not worry about the enemy’s statements... we are peace loving people but are ready to face all kinds of challenges. Our response to any aggression will be such that their future generations will also remember it.”

DIMAPUR, MAY 24 (NPN): Nagaland Medical Dealers Association (NMDA) on Wednesday informed that it would join the nationwide bandh call given by the All India Organization of Chemists and Druggists (AIOCD) for all wholesale/retail chemists on May 30, 2017 from morning 6am to 6pm. The bandh has been called to protest against introduction of E-Marketing/ online Pharmacy by the government of India. In a press release, NMDA president, Ato Yepthomi, and general secretary, Basu Damani, stated that with the introduction of online pharmacies the restricted drugs would become easily accessible to anti social elements and drug addicts, who would approach different online outlets with same prescription. The association stated that even submission of duplicate prescription for procuring restricted drugs has come to its knowledge. Further, NMDA stated that information of delivery of inferior quality of medicines has also come to its notice, saying this could result in death of patient also. More than 8.5 lakh chemists and 50 lakh families dependent on medicine trade would be directly affected by the giant online medicine traders established in cosmopolitan cities of the country, which affects especially remote state like Nagaland, stated NMDA. In this regard, NMDA has called upon chemists/pharmacies in different districts of Nagaland to keep their pharmacies closed in the larger interest of entire chemist fraternity.

At the venue of MODI Fest, the party will hold ‘Jan ki Baat’, where the people can speak out regarding their issues and grievances. Those issues and grievances will directly be heard by the prime minister. Apart from this, ‘Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas’ conference will also be organized throughout the country.

‘Governance, inclusive growth not Modi’s agenda’

IANS adds: A citizens’ collective on Wednesday said contrary to its claims, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government no more has governance and inclusive growth on its agenda. Presenting what it said was a report card on three years of the Narendra Modi government, ‘Wada Na Todo Abhiyan’ -- a platform claimed to have over 4,000 civil society organisations and individuals on board -expressed alarm over what it dubbed as the “onslaught of the right-wing polity and increasing incidents of lynching”. “Governance and inclusive development remain the NDA government’s unkept promises and there is

a sharp rise in inequity. A dichotomy exists between the government’s policies and implementation,” said a ‘Citizens’ Report’ on three years of the BJP rule. The report is an anthology of reviews from nearly 60 experts from various fields, and gives an account of how the government’s policies and initiatives, including the November 8 demonetisation, impacted society, including the Dalits, women, minorities, and tribals ever since the BJP-led NDA came to power in May 2014. Rights activist John Dayal said the “perpetual election campaign mode of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the aggressive hate rhetoric of the Bharatiya Janata Party-Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh combine”, have kept religious minorities under deep stress across the country. “Modi has never focussed on these during his radio talks ‘Mann ki Baat’,” Dayal said while referring to rise of cow vigilantism that has led to several killings. “The hallmark of this (Cont’d on p-8)

The aviation ministry is amending the “Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik” (UDAN) scheme and will bid out more regional routes by August.
