Those working outside should register: CM
Motivational trg on entrepreneurship for inmates at IQC
D I M A P U R , M AY 2 9 (NPN): Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio Friday informed that anyone planning to go and work outside Nagaland would henceforth have to register with the State government else, the latter would not take any responsibility. Stating this during his visit to Ganeshnagar Industrial Estate to take stock of the ongoing renovation works following its conversion into an institutional quarantine centre (IQC) as per a cabinet decision, Rio said the government would discuss and take a decision in this regard very soon. He also announced that the government would support the inmates at Ganeshnagar by imparting them motivational training on entrepreneurship to those who desired to stay back in Nagaland and earn their living. Emphasising focusing on agriculture and allied sectors, entrepreneurship,
Keep delimitation exercise on hold: SH
D I M A P U R , M AY 2 9 (NPN): Sümi Hoho (SH), the apex Sümi tribal organisation, has demanded holding up of delimitation exercise till final “Indo-Naga” political solution. In a representation to Nagaland Governor, SH president Hekhushe Shikhu and general secy. I Nikheto Jimomi said that rearrangement of the present constituencies would have to be carried out if the Centre agreed to one of the demands by the negotiating parties-- increasing assembly seats. While Nagas were expecting “final honourable and acceptable solution”, SH said the government’s move to carry out the exercise in Nagaland along with some of the states contradicted the expectation of Nagas. SH therefore urge Governor to keep the proposed delimitation exercise in abeyance “in view of the anticipated favourable outcome of the Indo-Naga peace talks.”

sports and tourism to build the State’s economy, Rio said a strategy group had been set up in this regard and it was working on all these aspects. The infrastructure at the industrial estate was left abandoned for several years as no potential Naga entrepreneurs came forward to stay and work there. And as more stranded Naga people started arriving from other States, accommodation became a huge challenge for Dimapur as out of the 18,000 plus returnees, it would have to house more than 70% of them. In view of this, the cabinet in a meeting held at Kohima on May 19 decided
to convert the industrial estate into IQC, after which Nagaland Police under the initiative of director general of police (DGP) John Longkumer and deputy inspector general (DIG) training Aotemsu spearheaded a complete renovation programme, which started on May 22. Rio and his entourage visited all three sectors of the estate, though renovation of only sectors A and B were completed with a capacity to house around 600 persons. The third sector with a total capacity to accommodate 600 more people would be ready by next week. In a brief programme held on the occasion, Rio
and his cabinet colleagues expressed gratitude and appreciation to Nagaland Police for making the estate fit for human habitation in record time. He also donated Rs 5 lakh for a feast to honour the police personnel. Mentioning that Nagas who had registered have started arriving from different parts of the country, the chief minister said accommodation capacity in Dimapur was currently around 4,500, including at Ganeshnagar. He said all ministers in-charge and legislators were doing good work and admitted that Dimapur was getting the major burden, for which it was decided to use Ganeshnagar. Referring to positive cases detected among passengers on the special train from Chennai, he reminded everyone that COVID-19 was a global pandemic and stressed that there should not be any blame game or social stigma attached. “As a family we must all welcome them and also to those who are yet to arrive. Let us welcome them with love,” he exhorted. Rio appreciated frontline workers, including the

(NPN): Reacting to the statement made by Wester n Chakhesang Hoho (WCH), published in the local dailies, appealing citizens of Kohima, Dimapur and Mokokchung to be magnanimous by considering the difficulties faced by less developed districts, Ao Senden president Chubawati Longchar and secretary Imtipokyim expressed regrets that WCH failed to differentiate among Kohima, Dimapur, Mokokchung or Phek. At a time when people of the State frequently complained about Kohima and Dimapur taking a lion’s share and leaving other districts with nothing, the Senden said it was not wise on its part to equate Mokokchung with Kohima and Dimapur. In a sharp contradiction to the series of posts on social media platforms, inmates at Meriema quarantine centre have dismissed all such stories. Speaking to Nagaland Post, a returnee from Chennai kept at Meriema quarantine centre said there was no complaint from anyone regarding food. Members of various churches and organisations were taking turns to provide good food to
the inmates and all of them were grateful. “I saw many stories on social media, but most of them are fake. We complained on the first day because the food was served late as we were all hungry after a long journey. But the food got better after that day,” he claimed. He admitted that the only disappointment was that two persons have to share a room. “Though we have separate beds, we share
the same bathroom. But there is nothing to sanitise it. Yes, they had asked us to carry our own hand sanitisers. Though I have sanitiser, some returnees did not have when they came.” He praised around 10 or 20 nurses doing round the clock duty of looking after more than a hundred inmates. Asked about some inmates escaping and no enforcement of social distancing as posted on social media, the inmate maintained all of them were fake news. Instead, he said all were locked from outside and no one has ran away adding, “at least not from this centre”. Another inmate said she was so happy to be back home and had no complaint about food. NBCC saddened by Tuensang fiasco D I M A P U R , M AY 2 9 (NPN): Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) has expressed its sorrow over the Tuensang fiasco. In a statement NBCC general secretary Rev Dr Zelhou Keyho, said negligence and selfishness should not become the norm at this time. It called upon the State government to act wisely so as not to create further chasms in the Naga family. As safety and equality were at the heart of any prosperous nation, NBCC said the government should view citizens’ safety and security and rights in a holistic manner and work to achieve this at all cost. Expressing its deep concern over the challenge posed by COVID-19, along with the plight of the patients both in Nagaland and outside, the council observed that the virus had devastated the world. And considering the speed at which the virus was spread-
ing, it said cooperation at all levels was paramount to promptly respond and battle the pandemic. Calling for transparency and coordination, the release urged the government to take all stakeholders into confidence and develop a responsive mechanism to combat the pandemic collectively. According to the council, Nagaland was no exception in the fight against the pandemic, but by God’s grace the State was free from the virus for at least over two months, enabling it to utilise this period for preparation. But, it wondered where the State had prepared enough given the extent of shortfall of basic equipments and a woefully inadequate infrastructure. Calling for not making make selfish and hasty decisions to protect oneself and one’s own community at this juncture due to fear and insecurity, NBCC urged everyone to shy away from the
COVID-19 quarantine centres brace storms of complaints
Kohima/Dimapur, May 29 (NPN): All of the 1463 stranded returnees from Chennai who arrived Dimapur on May 22, were (Cont’d on p-8) despatched to various quarantine centres at Dimapur and Kohima. Social media platforms are replete with posts that severely criticise the government, the department and frontline workers besides mounting attacks on poor facilities and poor quality of food. What is common is shortages of doctors and nursing staff which would cause huge problems once more returnees are accommodated. district administration, police, district taskforces, civil society groups, NGOs, churches and the public in general and thanked them all for their tireless efforts. “We have to fight the virus united,” he stressed. During the programme, PHE minister Jacob Zhimomi highlighted the issue of shortage of medical staff at Dimapur, to which Health minister S. Pangyu Phom assured to send additional teams by next week. DGP Longkumer on his part shared the command flow chart, items to be provided to the inmates on their arrival, expenditure incurred in renovating the industrial estate and budget requirement for catering, police mess and sanitation and scavenging duty. He also suggested to the Empowered Committee sending the returnees in large numbers to the industrial estate, instead of sending them in small batches. Hosts of ministers and advisers, including Neiba Kronu, Imna Along, Zhaleo Rio, Sukhalu, Azheto, DC Dimapur Anoop Kinchi and Commissioner of police Rothihu Tetseo were present on the occasion.

Another inmate also said that all healthcare workers were doing their level best to make them feel at home and always available when needed. In Dimapur, two teams are regularly checking the quality, quantity and hygiene of meals prepared. Every day, food is prepared for around 2500 people including people in quarantine, police personnel, medical personnel and others engaged in COVID-19 duty. command and control mode and give way to developing a harmonious and efficient inter-district coordination mechanism. “At this crucial time, we cannot afford to let any of our action or decision being misconstrued as one of favouritism as it can breed a culture of mistrust. The consequences can be costly creating a spirit of animosity in the society just as it happened when Rebecca loved one son more than the other (Genesis 25:28). Paul in his letter to the Corinthians says, ‘If one part suffers, every part suffers with it...” Our motive therefore must be sincere, serving one another with all that we have and do all that we can,” the release stated. To overcome the extraordinar y challenges ahead, NBCC said both the government and people must have mutual trust and commitment to genuinely work together.
Priority to Chennai returnees for test: APC Staff Reporter
D I M A P U R , M AY 2 9 (NPN): Agriculture Production Commissioner (APC), Y Kikheto Sema, who is also the over all in-charge of Dimapur district for COVID-19 related activities, Friday said that priority for swab test would be given to Chennai returnees. When contacted over phone, Kikheto told Nagaland Post that till swab test on all Chennai returnees was done, the government would not test any other returnee unless they showed symptoms of COVID-19. Kikheto said that he had received a complaint from a returnee from Haryana, who said though he had been in the quarantine centre for three-four days, he was not yet tested. Sema maintained it was not nec-
essary to test every returnee if the individual had no symptoms of coronavirus. Kikheto said the BSL-3 had a capacity to test a maximum of 90 samples per day, and so it would take 10 to 11 days to test all Chennai returnees. On reports about some NGOs against keeping returnees of other districts undergoing quarantine, he lamented that Dimapur cannot carry the cross of all other districts. In order to accommodate thousands of other returnees, he said there was need to send returnees tested negative for COVID-19 and who have completed quarantine period. Kikheto disclosed that he had already spoken with deputy commissioners of Mon and Peren districts and to take the returnees of their respective districts. K Y M C
