Fauci says India situation ‘very desperate’

WASHINGTON, MAY 4 (PTI): Terming the situation in India “very desperate”, America’s top public health expert Dr Anthony Fauci has suggested the government marshal all its resources, including the armed forces, to immediately build makeshift field hospitals, and urged other countries to help with not only materials but also personnel. In an exclusive interview to PTI, Fauci, who is the chief medical adviser to US President Joe Biden, also called for a nationwide lockdown, not necessarily for six months but “for a few weeks” to break the “continuity and transmission of infection.” “Given the fact that India is under such terrible stress right now with the extent of the outbreak, the rest of the world should pitch in to help, similar to what the United States is doing,” he said. “The world can help by supplying India with materials, and perhaps even personnel, but certainly

Polls over, fuel prices hiked D I M A P U R , M AY 4 (NPN): On the expected lines, oil companies did not wait long post declaration of state election results to raise the price of auto fuels -- petrol and diesel across the country, reports IANS news agency. Accordingly, the petrol and diesel prices increased by 15 paise and 18 paise per litre to Rs 90.55 and Rs 80.91 per litre respectively on Tuesday in Delhi. Across the country as well the petrol and diesel prices increased on Tuesday but its quantum varied depending on the level of local levies in respective states. After Tuesday’s rate revision, petrol price in Dimapur rose to Rs.89.57 per litre while diesel price climbed to Rs.83.14 per litre. In the state capital Kohima, petrol price surged to Rs.90.52 per litre and diesel price increased to Rs.83.90 per litre. With global crude prices at over $ 67 a barrel mark, OMCs may revise fuel prices upwards again if there is any further firming up. OMCs benchmark retail fuel prices to a 15-day rolling average of global refined products’ prices and dollar exchange rate. OMCs align the rates of domestic fuel with the global crude oil prices by taking into account changes in the foreign exchange rates. The new changes in fuel prices are implemented with effect from 6 a.m. each day.

materials that they need to adequately address it (the pandemic),” he said. The 80-year-old physician and immunologist on Monday also recommend mass vaccination to arrest the current spread of the deadly disease across India. “ R i g h t n ow, t h e y should start getting as many people vaccinated as they possibly can, with both the vaccines that they developed themselves in India as well as supplies of vaccines that they may be able to procure from other suppliers, be that the United States, be that Russia… whatever country is willing whenever companies are

willing to supply vaccine,” Fauci said. H o w e ve r, g e t t i n g someone “vaccinated now” does not solve today’s problem, he noted, adding that it helps prevent a problem several weeks from now. The more immediate problem is how to care for and treat the thousands who are thronging overflowing hospitals across the country every day, in desperate need of oxygen and basic treatment. “It is quite obvious to everyone that the situation in India is extremely serious,” said Fauci, who is considered one of the world’s top infectious disease specialists. Fauci said there are certain things that India can do immediately, mid-term and long-term basis. He recommended taking the help of the country’s armed forces to immediately build makeshift field hospitals. He also underlined the need for a countrywide lockdown for a few weeks to arrest the spread of the virus.

India may see 3rd wave, no point of night curfews, weekend lockdowns: AIIMS chief

All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Director Dr Randeep Guleria said on Tuesday that India may see a third wave of the coronavirus pandemic if the virus continues to evolve further and develops an immune escape mechanism. Dr. Guleria also rejected the night curfews and weekend lockdowns that some states have imposed to bring down the Covid-19 cases, saying they hardly work. Speaking with India Today TV, Dr. Guleria said, “Three things need to be looked at here. The first is improving the hospital infrastructure. The second is decreasing the number of cases in an aggressive way and the third, rolling out of vaccines. We have to break the chain of transmission. If we decrease the close contact between humans, there is a possibility that the cases will come down.” “We can call it a lockdown, a regional lockdown

based on a grated response like the UK did, depending upon the criteria you want -- state-level or larger level. It is something that policymakers need to decide because it’s an issue of organising everything in terms of lives and livelihood and that essential services are maintained and at the same time looking after those people who are daily wage workers. It [lockdown] has to be aggressive,” Randeep Guleria said. If the virus evolves further and it develops an immune escape mechanism then there is a chance that we may see a third wave of the pandemic, he added.

India’s Covid-19 tally crosses 2-cr mark Schools must reduce fees for online-only classes: SC NEW DELHI, MAY 4 (PTI): India’s total tally of COVID-19 cases crossed the 2-crore mark with over 50 lakh infections being added in just 15 days. The total tally of coronavirus cases in the country mounted to 2,02,82,833 with 3,57,229 new infections being reported in a day, while the death toll increased to 2,22,408 with 3,449 new fatalities, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Tuesday.

India’s total COVID-19 infections had surpassed the one-crore mark on December 19 after which it took 107 days to reach 1.25 crore on April 5. However, it only took 15 days for the cases to cross the 1.50 mark. Registering a steady increase, the active cases have increased to 34,47,133 comprising 17 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate was recorded at 81.91 per cent, the data up-

dated at 8 am showed. The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 1,66,13,292, while the case fatality rate was recorded at 1.10 per cent, the data stated. According to the ICMR, 29,33,10,779 samples have been tested up to May 3 with 16,63,742 samples being tested on Monday. The health ministry stressed that more than 70 per cent of the deaths occurred due to comorbidities.

NEW DELHI, MAY 4 (AGENCIES): As the Covid-19 pandemic forced closure of schools with a shift to online classes, the Supreme Court on Monday said educational institutions must reduce fees as their running costs have come down with various facilities provided on campus remaining closed. A bench of Justices A M Khanwilkar and Dinesh Maheshwari said the management of educational

institutions should be sensitive to the problems faced by people due to the pandemic and take steps to provide succour to students and their parents in these harsh times. It said insisting on payment for facilities not provided to students would amount to profiteering which must be avoided by the schools. The Supreme Court on Monday held that that a law can be framed to regulate fees in private unaided schools to stop profiteering

by the management and parents can also be made a part of the process to decide fees. “In law, the school management cannot be heard to collect fees in respect of activities and facilities which are, in fact, not provided to or availed of by its students due to circumstances beyond their control. Demanding fees even in respect of overheads on such activities would be nothing short of indulging in profiteering and

commercialisation. It is a well-known fact and judicial notice can also be taken that due to complete lockdown, schools were not allowed to open for substantially long period during the academic year 2020-21. Resultantly, the school management must have saved overheads and recurring cost on various items such as petrol/ diesel, electricity, maintenance cost, water charges, stationery charges, etc,” the bench said.
