KOHIMA, MAY 7 (NPN): All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretary in-charge of Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim, Dr. K. Jayakumar reiterated that no one can take away from Nagas their spirit of freedom in practising their own religious beliefs and that BJP will never succeed in its efforts to stamp Hindutva in any form. Dr. Jayakumar said this in an exclusive interview to this Correspondent here in Kohima after arrival from Dimapur at Hotel Ura. Attacking BJP for its agenda he said rise in attacks on religious minorities like killings and burning of churches have revealed the core agenda of the BJP, when asked if the BJP can be a major player within DAN in the 2018 election. He warned that if BJP did well in Nagaland even to the point of coming near majority in the 2018 assembly elections, then it will be a big setback for democratic freedom. Dr. Jayakumar questioned how under the Indian constitution can the BJP impose hurdles on minority religions by making official

programme on religious days as ‘Good Governance Day’ on December 25, the birth of Jesus Chris? He asked why did the BJP government not declare Good Governance Day on “Ganpati day” or “Maha Shivaratri Day? He said BJP was committing fraud on the people: “it’s a religious fraud and this will boomerang” he added. Dr. Jayakumar said the BJP has been fooling the Nagas with the Accord signed in 2015 which no one knows what it was all about. He said Nagas were being thoroughly fooled by BJP under the Naga Accord. He said since assembly election was approaching Nagas should seriously ponder over whether the accord was acceptable or not and since the signatories have not spelt out what the con-

tents were. By refusing to tell Nagas what the framework agreement was all about, Dr. Jayakumar said the Nagas were being taken for a ride. He disclosed that with former chief minister and MP Neiphiu Rio soon going to float another party; there will be nothing left of NPF. He said NPF is currently “vertically divided between NPF (left) and NPF(right)”. Under such situation, Dr. Jayakumar claimed that the Congress will be the main player in Nagaland. When asked how Congress would face election in 2018 with a fractionised set up, where there were no followers but only leaders or like an army with generals but not soldiers; Dr. Jayakumar said the party will do well and better than in 2013 general elections, Congress will not get the vote Congress polled last time in 2013. The secretary admitted that the fallout of Congress in Nagaland was due to local issues, ragionalistic feelings, wrong philosophies propagated and also conceded that the previous Congress government in the state could have done much better. To queries on the outcome of Meghalaya and

Mizoram ruled by Congress governments can sustain when the party was routed in Assam and surrendered in Arunachal and Manipur: Dr. Jayakumar said the Congress governments in Meghalaya and Mizoram were still strong and exuded confidence that the people will choose Congress which was a tried and tested party and would not vote for BJP in those states including Nagaland. He admitted that BJP will leave no stone unturned to capture power through any means in these states but in Nagaland he was optimistic that BJP will drawn a blank. Dr. Jayakumar also accepted that like in Arunachal and Manipur, politicians in the north east will continue switch from one party to the other for power. He said the Congress in Nagaland was being revamped in preparation for the 2018 elections where the party will contest all 60 assembly seats. With this in mind, Dr. Jayakumar said he has come to Nagaland on a ten-day tour of all districts to identify candidates for the constituencies by setting up district Congress committees and motivate the people to select the right candidates.

Kejriwal accused of taking `2 crore bribe

What Kapil Mishra claims: I saw Satyendra Jain give Rs. 2 crore in cash to Kejriwal. When I asked Kejriwal where did the money come from, he said he will talk about it at the right time

NEW DELHI, MAY 7 (AGENCIES): Sacked Delhi minister Kapil Mishra on Sunday accused chief minister Arvind Kejriwal of accepting a bribe of Rs2 crore at the latter’s official residence. Elaborating his accusations, Mishra told reporters during a press conference that he had witnessed Delhi’s health minister Satyendra Jain giving the cash to Kejriwal. Mishra claimed he has informed about the transfer of cash to the Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal earlier on Sunday and that he was ready to assist any investigations into it. This is the first time that a corruption allega-

tion of accepting illegal money has been made directly against Kejriwal. The allegations gain significance given that the incumbent AAP , which Kejriwal leads, came out of an anti-corruption movement and promised a clean and transparent government. “Allegations of corruption had come up during Punjab elections, Delhi government, funding but everyone kept saying that Kejriwal would and never indulge in corruption and that he will act against it. But when I saw it with my eyes that Satyendra Jain gave Rs2 crore in cash to Kejriwal at his residence, I could not

stop myself. When I asked Kejriwal where did the money come from, he said he will talk about it at the right time,” Mishra told reporters outside Delhi’s Raj Ghat. He added that it was ‘human’ to make a mistake but Kejriwal should come out in the open with the truth and people of Delhi have the right to know about it. Making another potentially damaging accusation, Mishra claimed that Jain had told him that he had settled land deals worth Rs50 crore for Kejriwal’s relatives. Mishra also said that he is yet to be formally informed about his sacking as a minister. Earlier in the day senior leaders of AAP held a meeting at Kejriwal’s residence to discuss the current political situation. Meanwhile, opposition parties took the opportunity to lash out at AAP demanding Arvind Kejriwal’s resignation.

No-detention policy in school to be revoked G U WA H AT I , M AY 7 (AGENCIES): Noting the poor quality of education and dropouts in Class IX, the Central government is likely to revoke this month the no-detention policy and allow States to detain a student after giving him or her a fair chance in Class V and VIII. RTE Act makes it mandatory for schools to pass students till Class IX. Union Minister for HRD Prakash Javadekar said that in a recent meeting of education ministers, 25 States had opposed the no-detention policy. “So we have unanimously decided to allow the States to detain students. A Bill has been prepared and it will soon go to the Cabinet, probably this month itself,” the minister said at a two-day regional workshop for NE region held to share innovations and best practices in school education. He said in Class V and VIII, there will be an annual examination in March. If the student fails, he will be given another chance by the school in June after giving the student remedial classes. Govt aiming to make NE ‘a gateway for SE Asia’: PM N E W D E L H I / SHILLONG, MAY 7 (PTI): Aiming to make the Northeast a gateway of Southeast Asia, the government has initiated major infrastructure projects in the seven states, including investing Rs 40,000 crore to improve the roads and highways, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said today. However, he lamented that “only Gangtok (in the Northeast) had found a place in the first 50 clean cities”, out of the 12 cities from the region surveyed as part of the recent nationwide cleanliness survey. While four Northeastern cities found a place between 100 and 200 clean cities, seven were positioned between 200 and 300, with Shillong being the 276th, he said while stressing that ‘Swachhata’ or cleanliness was a major challenge for everyone in the region. He was addressing the centenary celebrations of the prominent voluntary organisation, Bharat Sevashram Sangha, in Shillong through video conferencing. “We have to make the Northeast a gateway for Southeast Asia,” Modi said,

adding if this gateway is dirty, then the dream would not be fulfilled and asked the people and organisations like the Sangha to join hands in the cleanliness campaign. Observing that there has been no balanced development in the entire Northeastern region even so many years after Independence, Modi said his government “with all its resources” had planned to bring about overall and balanced development of the states here. The Prime Minister said the major thrust would be to improve connectivity and develop the entire region for tourism purposes. “All these initiatives will help to make the Northeast the gateway of Southeast Asia,” he said. While an investment of Rs 40,000 crore is being made to improve the road infrastructure in the Northeast, 19 big railway projects have also been started in the region, he said. “We are also improving the electricity situation in the Northeast and trying to bring even more tourists to the region,” Modi said. Announcing that the Northeast would soon be

connected with UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagarik) scheme, he said small airports were also being developed in the region, while the extension of the runway at Shillong airport has been approved. Bharat Sevashram Sangha is a network of volunteers across the globe engaged in helping people in distress. The Sangha’s social welfare activities include disaster relief, spreading education, providing healthcare facilities, vocational training and upliftment of the tribals. Lauding the role of the Sangha in playing a critical role during natural calamities, the Prime Minister said a myth was created that spirituality and service cannot go together. “Some people tried to tell that those who are in the spiritual path are different from those on the way of providing service to the humanity,” Modi said, adding that the Sangha has proved this wrong through its activities. He said Sangha had more than 100 branches and over 500 units engaged in providing social service in sectors including health, education as well as training the youths.

Aerated drinks contain an artificial sweetener, aspartame, which can disrupt the endocrine system leading to hormonal imbalance and infertility issues in women. “Almost all of the soft drinks and sodas contain aspartame which is linked to many health problems including infertility, malformations and miscarriages,” said Arvind Vaid, an IVF expert at city-based Indira IVF. “Excess consumption leads to hormonal imbalance and fluctuation that causes ovulatory disorders and even worsens PMS (Premenstrual symptoms),” he added. Stating that phenylala-

nine and aspartic acids are the two amino acids present in aspartame considered natural and harmless when eaten in combination with other amino acids, the experts said when they are taken unaccompanied, it stimulates the generation of free radicals which leads to cell death. “Sperm and ovum, being cells, have 90 per cent

chances of dying when this is consumed in excess. It is advised by many doctors and experts to avoid anything that helps in the formation of free radicals in the body for the significance of reproductive health,” said Vaid. Rachna Jaiswar, associated with Gynaecology Department of Safdarjung Hospital, said consumption

of sugary aerated drinks restrains the immune system causing weight gain and hormonal imbalance, which strongly contributes to fertility issues. “Soda is a highly acidic beverage, which alters the pH level of the body with excess consumption,” said Jaiswar. Talking about the high consumption of aerated drinks and sodas by men, Jaishwar said due to lack of nutrients in a high pH atmosphere, sperm cells either get harmed leading to its abnormal shape and poor quality or eventually die. “Moreover Bisphenol-A (BPA), a chemical that reduces the male semen quality, is found in the lining of plastic bottles and most canned goods. Men who consume soft drinks more often are at 4 times the risk of lowering their sperm count, motility and concentration,” said Jaiswar.

D I M A P U R , M AY 7 (NPN): District administration of Peren has accepted the demand of the Nagaland Timber Traders’ Union (NTTU) to allow timber operation in Peren till May 31 with a condition that the timber contractors should carry out road repairs in the district immediately. A press statement received here, stated that the decision was taken at the tripartite meeting between civil societies, timber contractors and members of DP&DB at Peren DPDB meeting at DC Complex, New Peren Hq on Sunday that was chaired by DAN chairman T.R. Zeliang. Around 45 trucks at Athibung-Khelma area and eight at Peren-Mpai area reportedly stranded due to DC Peren prohibitory order were allowed to pass after timber contractors agreed to take up repairing works of the road within seven days.

It was also decided that in the event, the timber contractors failed to keep their assurance, the district administration would convene special DP&DB meeting to initiate action. Addressing the meeting, Zeliang, who is also the chairman of DP&DB, Peren said, “compromise is possible only when we create the space to understand each other” while maintaining that “genuine grievances of the public” must be taken into consideration in all circumstances. He also highlighted on the importance of Green cover sustainability, stating that “Green Coverage is being reduced because of rampant logging whereas our target must be on maintaining ecological balance, allowing people to live with sufficient water and fresh air for a healthy life.” Zeliang further called upon the Peren forest department to keep vigil on illegal

timber business taking place in Peren. He also asked the department to identify illegal timbers coming from Manipur, Assam and Ntangki National Park via Peren district. He said out of the 11 districts in the State, Peren district topped the chart in timber business. Zeliang said every year, six months period have been opened for vehicles carrying timbers to ply across Peren district. However, he regretted that the “contractors could not make use of the allotted time period and had instead opted for confrontation with the authorities and the public.” In this regard, he said that government understand the hardship faced by the timber contractors from an “economic point of view” due to the recent bandh”, however maintained that one had to “compare individual problems with public problems in such situations”.
