IMPHAL, FEB 4: A fashion parade in which Bollywood actor Sunny Leone was about to participate as a show stopper on Sunday was cancelled after a bomb blast rocked the event venue in Imphal around 6.05 am on Saturday.
A bomb which police suspect to be a hand grenade, went off at Hapta Kangjeibung, the venue of a fashion show event under Porompat police station of Imphal East district.
There was no casualty in the blast as no one was there at the bomb exploded. However, the impact of the blast dug a pitch of around one foot diameter at the blast site, police said.
Soon after the blast, police teams from Imphal East district headquarters rushed to the spot and conducted a cordon and search operation at the residential areas in the periphery of the Hapta Kangjeibung.
There was no report of arrest or picking up suspects, the police added.
Top police officers of the district including the SP also inspected the blast site and took stock of the situation.
No armed outfit owned up the blast till the
SHILLONG, FEB 4 (PTI):
The Election Commission of India has issued showcause notice to National People’s Party (NPP) and United Democratic Party (UDP) as their candidates in West Shillong constituency allegedly distributed pressure cookers and bowl sets to voters in violation of the model code of conduct, Chief Electoral Officer FR Kharkongor said on Saturday.
Elections to the 60-member Meghalaya Assembly will be held on February 27 and the counting of votes will take place on March 2.
“We have taken suo moto cognizance of the matter following reports that the candidates of these political parties (NPP and UDP) have violated the model code of conduct. They were asked to reply ... ,” Chief electoral officer FR Kharkongor told PTI.
The showcause was is-
time of filing this report.
The police, however, suspected the hands of an armed group behind the blast.
A source close to the organizer of the fashion show said that an armed outfit recently issued threats not to hold fashion parade.
sued by the returning officer of West Shillong assembly constituency to the general secretary of both the parties.
National People’s Party candidate Mohindro Rapsang and United Democratic Party (UDP) nominee Paul Lyngdoh on January 28 and 30 had allegedly distributed freebies (pressure cookers and imported bowl sets) to the voters in violation of the model code of conduct.
Rapsang, a first time MLA of the opposition Congress had switched over to the ruling NPP of Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma recently.
He denied giving any freebies in violation of the MCC and insisted that the pressure cookers are from his MLA funds well ahead of the poll announcement.
Paul, the UDP candidate is a sitting member of the tribal council and a former MLA who lost to Rapsang in 2018 election.
The source, however, did not divulge the details of the armed group behind banning the event. They might have triggered the blast to thwart preparations of the fashion show event to be hosted on Sunday evening. House of Ali, a private
company, was preparing for the fashion show event on Sunday evening with Bollywood actor Sunny Leone as show stopper.
The actor was scheduled to arrive tomorrow (Sunday) to attend the event. In the meantime, following the blast, Imphal East district administration has cancelled the permission it had granted for organizing the fashion show event at Hapta Kangjeibung, citing law and order problems.
“The permit issued to organize Fashion Parade event at the Hapta Kangjeibung from 2/2/2023 to 5/2/2023 vide this office order of even no. dated 2nd February, 2023 stands cancelled with immediate effect in view of the law and order incident which occurred today morning at Hapta Kangjeibung and as a step for maintenance of law and order in and around the area,” the order of the district administration stated.
GUWAHATI, FEB 4 (PTI): Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday asserted that the drive against child marriage, launched by the state police from the previous day, will continue till the next assembly elections in 2026.
More than 2,250 people have been arrested in the state till Saturday in the crackdown on child marriage, according to an official statement.
Altogether 2,258 people have been arrested so far based on 4,074 FIRs registered against child marriages across the state, it said.
At least 139 people have so far been apprehended in Biswanath, followed by 128 in Barpeta and 127 in Dhubri, the police statement said.
Sarma said parents involved in the underage marriage are currently being let off with notice and not being arrested.
“Our drive will con -
create general awareness against the menace.
Himanta Biswa Sarmatinue till 2026 when the next assembly elections will be due. We are hopeful that by then, there will be no case of child marriage in the state,” the chief minister said.
In over 4,000 cases of child marriage, there were more than 8,000 accused.
“If we leave the parents out, the number of accused, who will face arrests, comes to around 3,500,” he said.
The CM said the deputy commissioners have been asked to “control the system of kazis” (Muslim priests who conduct marriages) and
The state cabinet had recently decided that those having married girls below 14 years of age will be booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The council of ministers also took a decision that cases under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006 will be registered against those who have married girls in the 14-18 years age group. They will be arrested and the marriages will be declared illegal. If the groom is below 14 years of age, he will be sent to a “reform house”.
Assam has a high rate of maternal and infant mortality, with child marriage being the primary cause as an average of 31 per cent of marriages registered in the state are in the prohibited age group, according to reports of the National Family Health Survey.
AGARTALA, FEB 4 (PTI): Newly formed political party Tipra Motha is likely to emerge as the kingmaker after the Tripura assembly polls, in which it will fight a triangular contest with the BJP-IPFT and Congress-Left Front alliances.
Tipra Motha, headed by erstwhile royal scion Pradyot Manikya Debbarma, refused to stitch an alliance with either the BJP or foes-turned-friends Congress and Left Front but has not shunned the possibility of a post-poll coalition with any party that supports its demand for a separate state of Greater Tipraland.
Banking on its stupendous performance in the 2021Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) polls, in which it bagged 18 of the 30 seats in the body, Tipra Motha has decided to go solo and hopes to sweep the 20 tribal-dominated seats that hold the key to power in the northeastern state that has a 60-member assembly.

TURA/SHILLONG, FEB
4: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, his Deputy Prestone Tynsong and several other prominent politicians from across party lines filed their nomination papers across Meghalaya, the fifth day of the election process.
Sangma, also the President of the National People’s Party (NPP,) filed his nomination papers from South Tura assembly seat before the Returning Officer, Saljong R Marak at Tura, the district headquarters of West Garo Hills while Tynsong filed his nomination at the Deputy Commissioner’s office here in the state capital.
Emerging from the Returning Officer chamber, Sangma, also the President of the National People’s Party (NPP) voiced confidence that his party would get an absolute majority. The half way mark is 31 in the 60-member Assembly.
“There is a positive wave for the National People’s Party, and the opposition is disintegrating day by day,” the Chief Minister told reporters.
“In this political scenario, the trend shows that the NPP is heading towards getting an absolute majority, and we are confident about it,” he added.
In the last elections, Sangma polled 13,656 votes and defeated his Congress rival CW Momin by 8400 votes. His main political rival this time is Bernard
Mark of the BJP – a former militant turned politician.
“We are moving ahead with the development work we have done in the last five years. The fact that the foundation has been laid, it is time to take things forward to the next level and the continuity is important to ensure that we’ll be able to achieve those goals,” the Chief Minister said.
Rubbishing Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mukul Sangma’s allegation of racial comments made by him against the party, the NPP Chief said, “I have said that it is (TMC) an outsider party based on the analogy where Mamata Banerjee herself has said in the last West Bengal elections that BJP and other national parties are outside parties. I have said that if the same yardstick is applied to Meghalaya, then with those yardsticks, which Mamata Banerjee has herself mentioned in her speech in elections, then TMC is an outside party. There is nothing racial about that comment.”
The Chief Minister
asked TMC leader Mukul Sangma, who is contesting from two seats – Songsak and Tikrikilla, to worry about himself as his chances of winning from either seats are slim. “People in Tikrikilla are already asking which seat Mukul will vacate in case he wins both,” the NPP chief said.
On the other hand, Tynsong also exuded confidence that the NPP would get an absolute majority and rubbished projections that the elections would present a hung assembly with no party getting an absolute majority.
“We will come out victorious and we will cross the magic number on March 2,” Tynsong said, adding there is an NPP wave in the state and people would be able to realize it when the election results are declared on March 2.
He further said that he doesn’t agree with TMC leader and former CM, Mukul Sangma contesting from two seats. Mukul is contesting from Songsak and Tikrikilla constituencies.
The BJP, on the other hand, is not leaving anything to chance, and has decided to contest 55 seats, leaving only five seats for alliance partner Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT), which has ceded much ground to Tipra Motha in the tribal areas as the newly formed outfit raised the demand for Greater Tipraland statehood.
The alliance partners will witness a friendly fight in Ampinagar assembly seat in Gomati district as IPFT will contest a total of six constituencies in the February 16 polls.
In the 2018 assembly polls, in which the BJPIPFT combine ended the 25-year-long rule of the Left Front, the saffron party had bagged 36 seats, including 10 ST reserved constituencies, while its alliance partner had bagged eight seats.
However, the IPFT began losing public support after failing to deliver its core demand of Tipraland state, and instead agreeing
GANGTOK, FEB 4 (PTI): The two-day ‘Sikkim Bandh’ called by the opposition Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) on Saturday evoked mixed response in the Himalayan state. The SDF called the bandh to protest the Supreme Court mentioning the Sikkimese Nepali community as immigrants while extending income tax exemption to all old settlers of the state.
Shops and business establishments were partially open, officials said.
Effigy of Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang was burnt by SDF workers who also raised slogans against the Tamang government “blaming him” for the prevailing political situation in which the Sikkimese Nepali community was battling to prove its identity. In a video which went viral on social media, some miscreants were seen pelting stones and other sharp objects at the SDF office located near Indira bypass. The miscreants dispersed before the local police could arrive on the spot. An investigation was underway into the incident, a police officer said, adding additional police personnel have been deployed at the SDF Bhawan as a precautionary measure. The state government has already initiated steps for filing the review petition for addressing the concerns of the Sikkimese Nepali community.
to a common minimum programme of the BJP under which the Centre constituted a panel for socioeconomic and linguistic development of the tribals, political observers said.
The IPFT, which once played a key role in eroding the Left Front’s traditional tribal vote bank, over the last two-and-half-years suffered loss of support base as Tipra Motha began harping on the demand for Greater Tipraland, a separate state carving out tribal areas of Tripura.
Political observers believe that Tipra Motha’s popularity rose not only because it raised the separate statehood demand but also because tribals still revere the erstwhile royal family and they refer to Pradyot Debbarma as ‘Bubagra’ or king. Seeing Tipra Motha’s rise in the tribal area, CPI(M) and Congress, rivals that joined hands, and even the BJP sought an electoral adjustment with the regional party but failed due to Deb-
barma’s uncompromising attitude towards the Greater Tipraland demand, the political observers said.
BJP leader and poll strategist Balai Goswami asserted that in an event of a triangular contest, the saffron party has an edge over the Tipra Motha and Congress-Left Front alliance as anti-BJP votes will get split among them.
“For the first time, a regional party is going solo in the state. The BJP is expected to do better in the hills and it also has a solid base in the plains. We expect our party’s tally to increase in this election,” he told PTI.
Senior CPI(M) leader Pabitra Kar said the Congress-Left alliance is expected to gain in the fight between Tipra Motha and the BJP as the saffron party’s alliance partner IPFT has lost its strength in the hills, but the CPI(M) still has its loyal supporters in the tribal areas.
“In the 2018 polls, the
IPFT had not only bagged eight seats but also helped the BJP win 10 constituencies in the hills. But this time, who will help the saffron party get the blessings of the indigenous voters?” he said. Party spokesperson Anthony Debbarma said Tipra Motha will emerge as the kingmaker, bagging at least 25-26 seats.
“Since the stage is set for a triangular contest in almost all the assembly seats, Tipra Motha will be the gainer in the polls. We will not only win the tribaldominated seats but also some non-tribal constituencies,” he said.
Prominent Tipra Motha leader Tapas Dey said the party had appealed to anti-BJP forces to come under one umbrella but neither the Left nor the Congress could commit to Greater Tipraland.
“Also, voters of the CPI(M) and the grand old party are confused over whom to vote in the scenario of changed political align-
ment,” he said. The Tipra Motha will contest 42 of the 60 seats in the state.
According to the seat adjustment, the CPI(M) will contest 43 seats, and its Left Front partners Forward Block, RSP and the CPI one each. The Left Front is also supporting an independent candidate in Ramnagar constituency in West Tripura. The Congress will contest 13 seats, the Trinamool Congress 28, while there are also 58 Independent candidates.
Veteran journalist and political analyst Sekhar Dutta said Tipra Motha’s entry into the electoral battle is going to hurt the BJP’s poll prospects in the tribal areas as demonstrated in the TTAADC polls of 2021.
“Tipra Motha will certainly perform well in TTAADC areas banking on its Greater Tipraland demand, while the BJP is unlikely to retain its tally of 10 ST seats due to the regional outfit’s growing popularity among tribal voters.

GUWAHATI, FEB 4 (PTI): With sustainable finance being a niche sector and most still in the “learning process”, the Sustainable Finance Working Group (SFWG) of G20 under India’s presidency will work towards capacity building in the segment by identifying requirements, efforts already in place and existing gaps, an official said.
It will then come up with recommendations on what needs to be done in specific areas and how organisations can contribute towards it, she added.
“Capacity building of the ecosystem for financing sustainable development was among the priority areas taken up for discussion in the 1st SFWG meet,” Geetu Joshi, adviser, Ministry of Finance (MoF), said at the end of the two-day meeting here on Friday.
She said it had been taken up because in many countries there is a lack of adequate knowledge and a scarcity of skilled professionals and workforce in sustainable finance.
“There is a lack of adequate knowledge. One member country said during a session that they thought
only developing countries lacked this skill, but they realised that it is a global problem,” Joshi said.
Pointing out that sustainable finance is a “very technical and niche” area, she said, “Not everybody understands it. Everybody is in the learning process. There are a lot of technical issues that need to be identified.”
“During one of the sessions on the topic, international organisations shared what they are putting in place and based on it, we will identify the areas first, know the demands and then
complement it with supply,” she said.
The SFWG will identify the requirements, efforts being made, gaps that are present and come up with recommendations for specific areas and which organisations can contribute.
“We will develop a G20 Sustainable Finance Technical Assistance Action Plan (TAAP),” the official said. A skilled workforce is always a huge asset, especially in the area of sustainable finance and forms the key to achieving Sustainable Development Goals, Joshi added.

JAMMU, FEB 4 (AGENCIES): Union minister Anurag Singh Thakur on Saturday said the government has nothing to hide on the Adani issue and accused opposition parties of creating a ruckus in Parliament to evade a debate on the “people-friendly” budget.
He alleged that they had insulted President Droupadi Murmu by stalling a discussion on the motion of thanks to the president’s address and demanded that they apologise to her.
“We want discussion on the President’s address and 2023-24 budget which will guide India from ‘Amrit Kaal to Swarnim Kaal’ and will lay the foundation of New India but the Opposition is running away from discussion,” Thakur told reporters at BJP headquarters here.
Parliament was adjourned for the second consecutive day on Friday without transacting any business after the Opposition stepped up its demand for an independent investigation
into the allegations of fraud against billionaire Gautam Adani’s companies that triggered an unprecedented stock crash.
Proceedings in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were disrupted as Opposition members raised slogans demanding a discussion and a JPC probe into the fraudallegation-triggered rout.
Responding to a question on the demand of the Opposition, the information and broadcasting minister said, “The banks, LIC and RBI have already made their statements clear, while the government has nothing to hide.”
“The role of the Opposition is very unfortunate.
Their response to the speech of the president is condemnable as they repeatedly humiliated her. They should immediately apologise to her,” he said.

Speaking to reporters, he also said Indian Railways has given away Rs 59,000 crore worth of subsidies in the transportation of food grains, fertilizers and many other items last year which is equivalent to 55 per cent concession for every passenger. “Honourable Prime Minister has given the target this year. After the success of Vande Bharat train, (he asked to) develop a new world-class regional train
which will be Vande Metro,” he said.
The Minister said they are planning to come out of a prototype within the next 12 to 16 months and then roll it out and run it for at least one year.
Explaining the concept of “Vande Metro”, he said the trains will be run with high frequency between two cities which are close to less than 100 Km each.
According to him,
these kinds of trains are called “Regional trans” in Europe. About Vande Bharat trains, he said in the last two and half years, they run almost 12,00,000 km and every seven to eight days a new train is being introduced.
The Railway Minister said the Vande Bharat train between Secunderabad and Visakhapatnam is running very well with almost 120 per cent occupancy prompting the department to introduce more routes in Telangana.
Rebuking the reports that railways are being privatised, Vaishnaw said the Central government is doing whatever is good for the Ministry and “there is absolutely no question of privatization.”

He said Congress will “definitely feel the pain because they have never imagined such a government which is only thinking about the citizens and taking forward the country”. On PDP president Mehbooba Mufti’s criticism of BJP policies on J-K, he said, “Some people have lost ground as they were habitual of family rule and grabbing land. They are out of power and they are frustrated.”
Jammu and Kashmir is moving on the path of development under the BJP government and will continue to march ahead. The abrogation of Article 370 and Article 35A has led to the return of peace, investment and a large inflow of tourists with national flags fluttering on every house, he said.
Thakur said he was jailed in 2011 on reaching J-K while leading a ‘Ti -
ranga yatra’ from Kolkata to Kashmir.
“Jammu and Kashmir has changed and is witnessing massive development,” he said.
The Opposition has not been given even a minute to raise the Adani issue in Parliament, the Congress said on Saturday, hitting back at Union Minister Anurag Thakur who said the government has nothing to hide on the matter.
Talking to reporters in Jammu, the information and broadcasting minister also accused the opposition parties of creating a ruckus in Parliament to evade a debate on the “people-friendly” budget. The vice chancellor said the university has been responsible for providing education to the students seeking higher education without any discrimination on any grounds.
The varsity recently decided to reserve seats in each of its undergraduate and postgraduate programmes for orphans under supernumerary quota from the next academic year.
Such students will also be exempted from payment of any kind of fees, he said.
The decision was taken in a meeting of the Executive Council on Friday.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB 4 (PTI):
The BJP has been winning elections by perpetuating a false consciousness similar to what happened in Nazi Germany, CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury said on Saturday.
The senior Left leader said the scientific temper, rational thinking and sense of equality and fraternity are willfully suppressed by today’s ruling regime at the Centre which also discriminates against religious and linguistic minorities.
Speaking at the Mathrubhumi International Festival of Letters (MBIFL 2023), Yechury said the

The AAP will contest all 230 seats in Madhya Pradesh Assembly polls, due later this year, a party office-bearer said on Saturday indicating the Arvind Kejriwal-led party will pitch the Delhi model of governance to target the BJP and opposition Congress and accused them of playing “destructive politics”.
AAP organisational general secretary Sandeep Pathak cited the performance of the party in recent local bodies polls in MP and said it will form the next government.
“We will field candidates in all the Assembly constituencies and with all our might fight elections,” Pathak told reporters here.
The 2018 Assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh led to a hung assembly, with the Congress emerging as
the largest party with 114 seats in the 230-member House, but failing to win a majority. The BJP had won 109 seats. The Congress later formed a coalition government under Kamal Nath. However, the dispensation collapsed in March 2020 after several MLAs of Congress defected to BJP, paving the way for the saffron party to return to power.

Chief
Asaduddin Owaisi came down heavily on the Assam Government demanding to know who will take care of the girls who were left in lurch after the state government’s crackdown on child marriages.
Speaking to reporters, he said it is the failure of the state government which has been keeping quiet for the past six years.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday asserted that the drive against child marriage, launched by the state police from the previous day, will continue till the next Assembly elections in 2026.
“For the past six years there has been a BJP Government in Assam. What have you been doing during the past six years? This is your failure for the past six years. You are sending them to jails. Now who will take care of those girls? CM (Himanta Biswa Sarma) do?
Marriage will remain there. It is a failure of the state and on top that you are pushing them into misery,” he said
in a press conference. More than 2,250 people have been arrested in the state till Saturday in the crackdown on child marriage, according to an official statement from the Assam Government said. Altogether 2,258 people have been arrested so far based on 4,074 FIRs registered against child marriages across the state, it said. “People fight elections. Our party has grown stronger by leaps and bounds which was seen when we won a mayoral election during civic polls in MP last year. At many places our corporators came out with flying colours,” he claimed.

BENGALURU, FEB 4 (IANS): BJP has appointed Union Minister for Education, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Dharmendra Pradhan as in-charge of forthcoming assembly elections in Karnataka. The party has also appointed Tamil Nadu State President K. Annamalai as the co-incharge. Pradhan had worked as the Karnataka in-charge during the tenure of former chief minister B.S. The Rajya Sabha MP also said the “destructive and dirty politics” was giving way to the “constructive politics” in India with the emergence of AAP under Kejriwal. He said the AAP has fast emerged as an alternative political force in the country and became a national party in just ten years by forming governments in Delhi and Punjab while putting up an impressive show in Gujarat. In the Gujarat Assembly polls held last December, AAP won 5 out of 180 seats it had contested. The BJP retained the power for the seventh consecutive term by winning a record 156 seats in the 182-member House.
MBBS student’s murder: Blood stains found on tube seized from accused’s home
MUMBAI, FEB 4 (PTI): Blood stains have been found on a floating tube seized from the residence of a lifeguard accused of killing 22-year-old MBBS student Sadichha Sane, a Mumbai police official said on Saturday.
Sane, a third-year MBBS student, had gone missing in November 2021 and lifeguard Mittu Singh was held last month along with one more person. As per police, Sane died after falling on the rocks at Bandra Bandstand during a tussle with Singh, who then took a floating tube and dragged her body into the sea before returning.
The probe team, during panchnama, seized the floating tube from Singh’s residence as well as the clothes worn by him on the night of the incident, the official said.
Blood stains, from the injury on Sane’s forehead sustained during her fall on the rocks, have been found on the floating tube and this could be strong evidence to nail the accused, he said.
FEB 4 (IANS): The police have arrested two persons for assaulting an employee at Bank of India’s (BOI) Nadiad branch.
Manish Dhangar is serving as an officer with the Bank of India’s NadiadKapadwanj branch, handling the loan desk.
In his complaint,
Dhangar said, “On Friday afternoon, a customer named Samarth Brahmbhatt reached the branch and started beating me. He slapped me three to four times, and even kicked me. When the other staff tried to intervene, Samarth’s friend Parth, who was accompanying him, kicked me.” According to Dhangar, Samarth was angry with him and the bank because the repeatedly calls were made to him to submit a copy of his house insurance policy. Samarth had threatened over phone that he will not submit the insurance policy.
Adaybefore presenting her fifth consecutive union budget on February 1, 2023 finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman exuded confidence while announcing measures to spur spending to provide impetus for growth and also to cap on the deficit. Sitharaman had also sounded confident that her budget which has the full backing of the prime minister, will be able to overcome the problems to achieve targeted growth even if not of the pace desired. As per the observations of noted economists, the perky five-step income tax is good up to an income of Rs 12 lakh. Beyond that it is a cumbersome process and even causes higher tax outgo for individuals. Most vocal are the intellectual groups within the BJP. Some experts say no income- tax up to Rs 7 lakh is a wrong nomenclature having confusing new and old schemes. There are views that if corporate taxes could be effectively at 15 percent, the highest I-T should not be more than 20 percent and not 39 percent as of now with various kinds of TDS including foreign remittances. This also hurts the farmers too and therefore, a political budget needs more caution. The budget focuses on a galore of Amrit Kaal programmes right from incentivizing savings for women to virtually every aspect that benefits farmers, a strong chunk of powerful voters with over Rs 15000 crore schemes. There are Gobar-dhan gas plants, natural farms, PM-Pranam alternate fertiliser; digital public infra for agriculture – questionable as 4G and 5G eliminate many fauna like bird species; agricultural accelerator fund; enhance cotton crop; Antmanirbhar Horticulture Clean Plant; Shree Anna –Global Hub for Millets; Green Growth fuel energy efforts; Rs 6000 crore fisheries (Rs 1000 crore less than last year) and higher Rs 20 lakh crore agri-credit for animal husbandry, dairy and fisheries. New massive storage capacity creation, requiring heavy corporate involvement, is also planned. The government farmer outreach mission is also commendable even if some minority farmers are still to receive even a fraction of the benefits. Around 17.25 lakh farmers have benefitted from MSP payments though for various coarse crops MSPs virtually are on papers. The government’s Situation Assessment of Agricultural Household in Rural India has found that the best deal farmers could have from are Farmers Production Organisation (FPO), APMCs, maligned by vested interests. The open or corporate market does not ensure prices or sustenance. This shows that farmers’ stir was on its path and corporate have to mend their ways. One reason BJP lost the Himachal polls was corporate monopoly of apple business causing heavy losses to growers. Infra is required as per needs but sudden expenses increase as again now in railways and roads may lead to gradual financial and economic problems and burden the future generation. The infra spending has too many contras. Interest payments and unutilised programmes burden future generation as well. Capacity utilization has reached tipping point - 75.3 percent, the Economic Survey says. There are cautions also in view of the global slowdown and rising inflation. This lowers private investment. All in all the budget appears to be giving focus and funds on growth while social borrowings have been reduced. Whether the budget will spur growth or recession will be known only by next year.
The love of Christ compels us… —2 Corinthians 5:14
Paul said that he was overpowered, subdued, and held as in a vise by “the love of Christ.” Very few of us really know what it means to be held in the grip of the love of God. We tend so often to be controlled simply by our own experience. The one thing that gripped and held Paul, to the exclusion of everything else, was the love of God. “The love of Christ compels us….” When you hear that coming from the life of a man or woman it is unmistakable. You will know that the Spirit of God is completely unhindered in that person’s life.
When we are born again by the Spirit of God, our testimony is based solely on what God has done for us, and rightly so. But that will change and be removed forever once you “receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you…” (Acts 1:8). Only then will you begin to realize what Jesus meant when He went on to say, “…you shall be witnesses to Me….” Not witnesses to what Jesus can do— that is basic and understood— but “witnesses to Me….” We will accept everything that happens as if it were happening to Him, whether we receive praise or blame, persecution or reward. No one is able to take this stand for Jesus Christ who is not totally compelled by the majesty of His power. It is the only thing that matters, and yet it is strange that it’s the last thing we as Christian workers realize. Paul said that he was gripped by the love of God and that is why he acted as he did. People could perceive him as mad or sane— he did not care. There was only one thing he lived for— to persuade people of the coming judgment of God and to tell them of “the love of Christ.” This total surrender to “the love of Christ” is the only thing that will bear fruit in your life. And it will always leave the mark of God’s holiness and His power, never drawing attention to your personal holiness.
However beautiful the strategy, you should occasionally look at the results.
~ Sir Winston ChurchillHindenburg Research, the financial research firm with an explosive name and a track record of sending the stock prices of its targets tumbling, is taking on one of the world’s richest men.
Hindenburg is back in the headlines after last week accusing Indian conglomerate Adani Group of “a brazen stock manipulation and accounting fraud scheme.” It cited two years of research, including talks with former Adani senior executives and reviews of thousands of documents.
The Adani Group has blasted the accusations, calling them “a malicious combination of selective misinformation and stale, baseless and discredited
allegations that have been tested and rejected by India’s highest courts.” Nevertheless, Hindenburg’s scorching allegations have caused the fortune of Adani Group’s founder, Gautam Adani, to slide by more than $34 billion in just a week, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires index. Here’s a look at the firm behind all the movement:
WHAT IS IT?
Hindenburg says it specialises in “forensic financial research.” In layman’s terms, it looks for corruption or fraud in the business world, such as accounting irregularities and bad actors in management.
WHERE DID ITS NAME COME FROM?
The firm says it sees
the Hindenburg, the airship that famously caught fire in the 1930s to the cry of “Oh, the humanity,” as the “epitome of a totally manmade, totally avoidable disaster.” It says it looks for similar disasters in financial markets “before they lure in more unsuspecting victims.”
WHO ELSE HAS HINDENBURG GONE AFTER?
It’s perhaps most famous for a 2020 report on Nikola, a company in the electric-vehicle industry whose founder Hindenburg said made misleading claims to ink partnerships with top auto companies hungry to catch up to Tesla.
Among its allegations, Hindenburg accused Nikola of staging a video to
calm skepticism about its truck, one that showed the vehicle cruising on a road.
Hindenburg said the video was actually just showing the truck rolling down a hill after getting towed to the top.
WHAT HAS COME OF SUCH ACCUSATIONS?
For Nikola, quick scrutiny from the government and investors.
The company and its founder, Trevor Milton, received grand jury subpoenas from the U.S Attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York and the N.Y. County District Attorney’s Office shortly after Hindenburg released its report. The Securities and Exchange Commission also
soon issued subpoenas to Nikola’s directors. Milton was convicted this past October of charges he deceived investors with exaggerated claims about his company’s progress in producing zero-emission 18-wheel trucks fueled by electricity or hydrogen.
And Nikola in late 2021 agreed to pay $125 million to settle SEC charges that it defrauded investors by misleading them about its products, technical advancements, and commercial prospects.
WHAT DOES HINDENBURG GET OUT OF THIS?
It can make money. In its Adani report, it said that it had taken a “short position in Adani Group Companies” through bonds
that trade in the U.S. and other investments that trade outside India. It has made similar “short” bets against other companies it published unflattering reports on. A “short” trade is a way for someone to make money if an investment’s price falls. Afterward, if the price of a company’s stock or bonds falls because of the negative attention from the report, Hindenburg can profit. Such short sellers have been criticised for unfairly pushing down prices of stocks with potentially unfounded allegations. But proponents also call them a healthy part of a stock market, keeping stock prices in check and preventing them from running too high.

One day back in the 1970s, my husband was talking to a friend who worked with him in Washington D.C., deploring something that he saw as corruption. He had no doubt that his friend would agree with him that corruption was a very bad thing. How could he think anything else? But his friend did the opposite. He snapped at him: “Don’t talk like that about corruption! If there were no corruption, me and my family would all be dead.”
His friend was a Jew from Eastern Europe, and during the time of Hitler, his family was trying to leave with him and his siblings to reach the West, but first they had to get past an international border. They had taken precautions. His grandfather took one of the border guards aside and they had a brief conversation. The guard nodded and took a package his grandfather had prepared for him and examined it, and went inside and stamped their papers. The family was free to leave.

The guard was obviously corrupt. For a consideration, he was ready to ignore the law and the requirements of his job and let the family leave. If he had been law abiding, he would have arrested the entire family and they would have been sent to one of the Death Camps that had been built as Hitler’s ‘Final Solution’ to the ‘Jewish problem’. There is just a tiny possibility that the guard was thinking for himself, that he was not so sold on the new laws that he felt obliged to send a family to their death. Maybe by leaving open a little window of corruption, he could still see himself as human, something more than just an obedient man in uniform implementing laws that were more barbarous than his conscience. The way a traffic policeman, when required to levy a fine that he thinks is excessive, charges you what he thinks is the right amount, as a bribe. And if you still insist on paying the fine and getting a receipt, he may even wave
you away and let you go for free. There is something about the enhanced penalty that he does not like. Not all corruption is like this. There is also the corruption of the mighty, who are able to control the system and override its laws. But the law itself is not universally a good thing. Incidents like these, where our friend and his family were spared, force us to make judgments about man-made laws, with all their time-bound meanness, as against something more human and eternal, and linked to a deeper and more independent notion of what is ‘right’.
There is something democratic about this kind of petty corruption, because it allows even the powerless to find a way to override the system. All it takes is… money. This is the kind of corruption that society at large seems to resent the most, not the corruption where just a ‘phone call’ from the right power broker can get you something out of turn.
And this is strange:
the corruption that is off limits to the general public is seen as all right, and is given a free pass, while the corruption that is only about getting past a brief hurdle for something that should have come to you automatically brings the biggest shame. Or is it that ordinary people do not know about the other kind of corruption, where things that are far more outrageous, far more illegal, can easily be done with the right sort of access? No: I am not saying that corruption is something moral, or sublime. I am only trying to question the way petty corruption has been prioritised as a depravity that must, per se, be rooted out at all costs: but not the other one. So much so that the word ‘corruption’ itself has become a dogwhistle, a demand from any pied piper on the make trying to claim the moral high ground. “If you can’t see the corruption all around you, you must be blind. If you don’t listen to me and let me set your moral compass,” so the spiel goes, “you yourself are definitely
corrupt.”

Aspirants may apply on or before 21st February.
Ranjan K Baruah. bkranjan@gmail.comThen the gaslighting will go into full force. The guilt-tripping that you are not doing enough. And that the pied piper knows what is best for you. This would be a small personal cautionary tale, the sort that so many of us have seen firsthand, were it not for the way this can grow until it becomes something big enough to bring down governments and change the course of history. Not because there was ever any intention of creating the clean stable world that does not use roadblocks, gatekeepers and the delays that make people desperate enough to seek out of turn favors, but because an allegation of ‘corruption’ is a sure-fire way of ruining the competition. And once the barb is thrown, it sticks.
The word that has been winking at me from left field as I write is: manipulation. The way an image is carefully planted in our minds and then used as a dogwhistle, so that even if we stray and start asking awkward questions, we must
start out by couching our words in an apology and a disclaimer. Because we are the ones going against received wisdom, and indulging in heresy. We are the ones raising questions about long-term players who are supremely networked and intent on total control. In this context, ‘corruption’ is the little goat tied up there in the jungle to bring the tiger into view so that he can be shot down.
I once asked a government officer if things eight years ago were really as bad as the media had made them out to be. He stared into the distance for a few moments, trying to gather his impressions together, all the things he had heard everyone around him say back in those days. Trying to square his response with what he had said the last time we met. “Yes,” he said, slowly. “Maybe…” Peggy Mohan is a linguist and the author of four books. She teaches linguistics at Ashoka University. (The Wire)
Limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius is currently not plausible, according to a new report.
Climate policy, protests, and the Ukraine crisis - The participating researchers systematically assessed to what extent social changes are already underway, while also analyzing certain physical processes frequently discussed as tipping points.
The researchers concluded that social change is essential to meeting the temperature goals set in Paris. But what has been achieved to date is insufficient, they said. Accordingly, climate adaptation will also have to be approached from a new angle, said the report. The central report was re -
leased by Universität Hamburg’s Cluster of Excellence “Climate, Climatic Change, and Society” (CLICCS). The interdisciplinary team of researchers addressed ten important drivers of social change, the report said.
“Actually, when it comes to climate protection, some things have now been set in motion. But if you look at the development of social processes in detail, keeping global warming under 1.5 degrees still isn’t plausible,” says CLICCS Speaker Anita Engels.
According to the Hamburg Climate Futures Outlook, especially consumption patterns and corporate responses are slowing urgently needed climate protection measures. Other key factors like UN
climate policy, legislation, climate protests and divestment from the fossil fuels are supporting efforts to meet the climate goals.
As the analysis showed, however, this positive dynamic alone won’t suffice to stay within the 1.5-degree limit. “The deep decarbonization required is simply progressing too slowly,” said Engels.
In addition, the research team assessed certain physical processes that are frequently discussed as tipping points, such as the loss of the Arctic sea ice and melting ice sheets, which are serious developments as are regional climate changes.
But they will have very little influence on the global temperature until 2050, they said. In this regard, a thawing
permafrost, weakened Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), and the loss of the Amazon Forest are more important factors, albeit only moderately, the report said.
“The fact is that these feared tipping points could drastically change the conditions for life on Earth - but they’re largely irrelevant for reaching the Paris Agreement temperature goals,” said CLICCS Co-Speaker JochemMarotzke from the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, Germany.
The report also covered COVID-19 and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Economic reconstruction programs have reinforced dependence on fossil fuels, which means the necessary changes are now less plausible than previously
assumed, the report said.
In contrast, whether efforts to safeguard Europe’s power supply and the international community’s attempts to become independent of Russian gas will undermine or accelerate the phasing out of fossil fuels in the long run remains unclear, the report said.
The Outlook is currently the only assessment that interlinks social sciences and natural sciences analysis in an integrated study to assess the plausibility of certain climate futures, the report said. More than 60 experts have contributed, it said. According to the report, the best hope for shaping a positive climate future lies in the ability of society to make fundamental changes, or “human agency”. (PTI)

NEW DELHI, FEB 4 (AGENCIES): The names of five judges for the Supreme Court were cleared by the centre on Saturday, nearly two months after they were recommended, amid a protracted tussle between the executive and the judiciary over the process of appointments, reports India News.
Rajasthan High Court Chief Justice Pankaj Mithal, Patna High Court Chief Justice Sanjay Karol, Manipur High Court Chief Justice PV Sanjay Kumar, Patna High Court judge Ahsanuddin Amanullah and Allahabad High Court judge Manoj Misra will now be Supreme Court judges.
Facing tough questions from the top court, the centre had promised a day ago that the pending recommendations of the panel of judges known as the collegium for the elevation of five high court justices will be cleared by Sunday.
Justices SK Kaul and AS Oka had expressed displeasure over the delay in clearing recommendations
for the transfer of high court judges, calling it a “very serious issue”, and warned that any delay in this matter may result in both administrative and judicial actions which might be “very uncomfortable”.
Asked about the status of the Supreme Court collegium’s recommendations for the top court during a hearing on two petitions, Attorney General R Venkataramani said the warrant for appointment of five judges is expected to be issued in two days.
As per the provisions under the Constitution of India, Hon’ble President of India has appointed the fol-

In strong comments referring to the delay in approving the transfers of high court judges, the top court had said, “Don’t make us take a stand which will be very uncomfortable... You will make us take some very, very difficult decisions.”
The collegium system has become a major flashpoint between the Supreme Court and the centre, with the mechanism of judges
appointing judges fuelling an intense debate that, in a departure from tradition, has seen sharp comments by Law Minister Kiren Rijiju.
The collegium headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud on December 13 last year had recommended the five judges for elevation to the Supreme Court.
Later, on January 31, the collegium recommended the names of Allahabad High Court Chief Justice Rajesh Bindal and Gujarat High Court Chief Justice Aravind Kumar for elevation as Supreme Court judges as well.
While recommending the two names earlier this week, the Collegium had said, “The names recommended earlier by the collegium by its resolution dated December 13, 2022, shall have precedence over the two names recommended presently for appointment to the Supreme Court.”
The top court, which has a sanctioned strength of 34 judges including the Chief Justice, is functioning with 27 judges presently.

India’s pride should not be represented by the wealth of an individual and authorities like SEBI should make it clear what kind of role they play in the economic sector, Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra said here on Saturday. She was apparently referring to the Adani saga that has rocked the country’s stock market.
Speaking at the Mathrubhumi International Festival of Letters (MBIFL 2023), the opposition MP said she has been raising concerns about the rise of some particular business houses from 2019 but SEBI failed to even provide a reply.
“When Hindenburg, the short seller from the US, asked SEBI why they have not replied to my questions, they said they were yet to reach a logical conclusion to provide answers. This was to my questions in 2019,” the West Bengal MP recalled.
Earlier addressing the issue of “Women in Power Politics”, she said it is unfortunate that a law was need-
HAMIRPUR/UNA (HP), FEB 4 (PTI): Development activities in Himachal Pradesh will not be allowed to suffer even though the state is facing a serious financial crisis, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said while addressing a rally in Hamirpur town on Saturday.
He said the previous BJP government’s mismanagement was responsible for the crisis and the time has come to address it.
Sukhu said the construction of a bus stand in Hamirpur which had been pending for a long time would be started and funds for this would be allocated in this year’s annual budget.
Praising local Independent MLA Ashish Sharma, he said the Hamirpur Medical College will be made the best in the state and people will get all facilities there in the coming days. He also announced the opening of a nursing college in Hamirpur for the benefit of local peo-
ple. Sukhu said efforts would be made to boost tourism potential of the district and water-based tourism activities would be promoted in the Nadaun areas.
Nadaun is the assembly constituency of CM Sukhu.
Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri, who visited Sri Radha Krishna Temple in Kotla Kalan in Una district on Saturday, said the state government is committed to the development and improvement of all temples of the state and provide the
best facilities to the devotees visiting them. He said that works have been started to provide state-of-the-art facilities to the devotees at Chinnamastika Dham Mata Shri Chintpurni Ji, a major religious site. The deputy chief minister said an action plan would be prepared to provide bus services to temples in the state for the convenience of devotees. Bus services would also be started to various religious places such as Haridwar and Vrindavan, he said.
ed to ensure that women who make up 50 per cent of the population get a proportional representation.
Pointing to gender inequality that exists in today’s world, she said that in politics, like in every other field, qualities that are seen as admirable in men are a disadvantage for women.
“If you are tough, know your mind, have a clarity of vision...You are called depressive. You are called bossy. But the same qualities in a man are qualities to be lauded,” she said, eliciting a round of applause from the audience with a
sizable section of women. Answering questions about her transition from the corporate world to politics, Moitra said it was a steep learning curve for her.
“All parameters that one holds as success are not applicable in politics and it is not a level playing field. A person who has achieved a lot in his or her professional career may think that it would help them. But those accolades mean nothing if a class ten dropout or someone with criminal cases against them are more capable in winning elections,” she added.
NEW DELHI, FEB 4 (PTI): The Congress on Saturday demanded that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal should resign as it said he has no moral right to be in office as the Enforcement Directorate has ‘clearly indicted’ him in the excise scam.
Congress leader and former Union minister Ajay Maken said a Rs 100 crore kickback has been established against Kejriwal and his ministers in the scam, and a PMLA court took cognisance of the charge sheet on Thursday and allowed that charges be framed against all the accused.
“The Indian National Congress demands the immediate resignation of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, along with the indicted ministers Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain,” Maken told reporters here, adding that they have no moral right to continue in office.
He said the money trail has also been mentioned in the charge sheet, leading to advertisem ents in Goa
elections and cash payments to volunteers to carry out surveys.
Maken said a DANICS officer has claimed that the GOM report for a 12 per cent margin for wholesalers of liquor trade was handed over to him at Kejriwal’s residence, where Sisodia and Jain were also present.
Arvind KejriwalIt is alleged that this report was handed over to him without any discus -
sions, he claimed. “From this 12 per cent margin to the wholesalers, 6 per cent is alleged to be paid back as a kickback,” Maken claimed. He also alleged that the concessions by the Kejriwal government to liquor traders further caused loss to the exchequer, which include Rs 144.36 crore waived off from liquor license fee on account of COVID-19.

NEW DELHI/JAIPUR, FEB 4 (PTI): A Pakistani drone carrying about 6 kg narcotics has been shot down by the Border Security Force along the International Border in Rajasthan on Saturday, a senior officer said. The flying machine was brought down during the intervening night of February 3-4 in Srikaranpur area of Sriganganagar sector of the state.
BHOPAL, FEB 4 (PTI):
A special court on Saturday granted bail to Congress Rajya Sabha member Digvijaya Singh in a defamation case filed by a BJP leader whom he had accused of being involved in the Vyapam scam that rocked Madhya Pradesh in 2013.
The court dealing with cases against MPs and MLAs granted relief to the Congress leader in the defa-
mation case filed in 2014, said Singh’s lawyer Ajay Gupta told PTI. Singh had been asked to appear in the court. The Vyapam scam relates to alleged manipulation in the selection process
for government colleges and jobs conducted by the then Madhya Pradesh Vyavsayik Pariksha Mandal (Vyapam), a professional exam board. It involved the alleged impersonation of candidates, rampant copying and other malpractices.
Talking to reporters later, an undeterred Singh said he faces cases in four states. Singh accused the present BJP government headed by Chouhan of
indulging in corruption through “middlemen”.

MUMBAI, FEB 4 (PTI): India’s economic image is not affected due to Adani Group’s recent decision to pull out Rs 20,000 crore FPO amid allegations of financial wrongdoings, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Saturday.
The finance minister said there has been an accretion of USD 8 billion to the forex reserves in the last two days alone.
“...our macroeconomic fundamentals or our economy’s image, none of which has been affected. Yes, FPOs (follow-on public offers) come in, and FIIs (foreign institutional investors) get out,” Sitharaman told reporters here.
The minister said there are “fluctuations” in every market but the accretion over the last few days establishes the fact that the perception of both India and its inherent strengths is intact. Answering a broader question on the allegations against Adani Group, she said the country’s indepen-

About ten days ago, US-based short seller Hindenberg Research made a slew of allegations on the corporate governance front against Adani Group. The Ahmedabad-based group has denied all the allegations and termed it as a calculated attack on India. It has cancelled the FPO even after managing subscriptions to it.
Finance Secretary TV Somanathan on Saturday stood by his comment on the controversy where he called it a storm in a teacup, clarifying that this is in the context of macroeconomic terms and the stability of India’s public financial institutions.
Meanwhile, on the decision to convert outstanding dues into equity at Vodafone Idea, Somanathan said the transaction is being done as a package for all telcos. He said the government share will be held by the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM) where the stake will be considered as a public shareholder.

Vodafone Idea will convert dues of Rs 16,133 crore into equity and issue shares for Rs 10 each, the company informed. “We had sought a firm commitment that the Aditya Birla Group would run the company and bring necessary investments. The Birlas have agreed and hence we have agreed to convert. We want India to be a three-player market plus BSNL and ensure healthy competition for consumers,” Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said in a statement.

BJP will try to finish alliance partner: RJD Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) on Saturday said that though NDPP and BJP were alliance partner in Nagaland, the saffron party would try to finish the alliance partner. RJD vowed that it would never form an alliance with BJP, which it described as a religious fanatic party. Addressing press conference at Hotel Saramati here on Saturday, RJD national general secretary Bhola Prasad Yadav and Bi-
har cabinet minister Kumar Sarvjeet claimed that the new entrant—Lok Janshakti Party (LJP)—was B-team of the BJP. They said that LJP was contesting elections in those constituencies where NDPP has put up its candidates. Stating that BJP always tries to decimate the alliance partners or the opposition, Bhola Yadav has urged the opposition leaders to unite and fight against BJP in Nagaland.
RJD national leader said party was trying to identify some seats where party could put up candidates for the ensuing assembly polls.
Asked about the number of seats JRJD was planning to contest, Sarvjeet said the party plans to put candidates in 11 constituencies. He said that the party would support those MLAs were denied party tickets.

NEW DELHI, FEB 4 (AGENCIES): The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Friday said that the banking sector remains resilient and stable, allaying fears amid growing concern about the exposures of Indian banks to the Adani Group.
“As the regulator and supervisor, the RBI maintains a constant vigil on the banking sector and on individual banks with a view to maintain financial stability,” the central bank said in a release.
However, the RBI did not name the Adani Group, Economic Times reported.
The RBI has a Central Repository of Information on Large Credits (CRILC) database system where the banks report their exposure of Rs 5 crore and above which is used for monitoring purposes, it said.
“As per the RBI’s cur-
rent assessment, the banking sector remains resilient and stable. Various parameters relating to capital adequacy, asset quality, liquidity, provision coverage and profitability are healthy. Banks are also in compliance with the Large Exposure Framework (LEF) guidelines issued by the RBI,” it further added.
Media reports on Thursday said the central bank was already assessing the banking system’s exposure to the Adani Group which has lost $108 billion of market value since US short-seller Hindenburg Research’s allegations of misgovernance, ‘fraud’ and price ‘manipulation’ surfaced a week ago.
According to a recent CLSA report, Indian banks have an absolute debt exposure of close to Rs 80,000 crore, amounting to about 40% of the total Adani
Group debt, which is nearly Rs 2 lakh crore.
Earlier in the day, India’s largest lender SBI said its total exposure to the conglomerate was 0.9% of its total loan book, or around Rs 27,000 crore.
Another public sector lender Bank of Baroda said it has reduced exposure to the embattled Adani Group entities over the last two years, and has no concerns on asset quality issues with the conglomerate. The bank’s managing director and chief executive Sanjiv Chadha told reporters that the bank’s overall exposure to the ports-to-media conglomerate’s entities is one fourth of the single group exposures allowed under the Large Exposures Framework but refused to share a number.

JUBA, FEB 4 (AGENCIES): Pope Francis said on Saturday Churches in South Sudan “cannot remain neutral” but must raise their voices against injustice and abuse of power, as he and two other Christian leaders conducted a peace mission to the world’s newest country.
On his first full day in South Sudan, Francis addressed Catholic bishops, priests and nuns in the cathedral of St. Therese in the capital Juba as the Archbishop of Canterbury and the head of the Church of Scotland held services elsewhere.
South Sudan broke away from Sudan in 2011 but plunged into civil war in 2013 with ethnic groups turning on each other. Despite a 2018 peace deal between the two main antago-
nists, bouts of inter-ethnic fighting have continued to kill and displace large numbers of civilians.
“Brothers and sisters, we too are called to intercede for our people, to raise our voices against the injustice and the abuses of power that oppress and use violence to suit their own ends,” Francis said, adding that religious leaders “cannot remain neutral before the pain caused by acts of
injustice”. There are 2.2 million internally displaced people in South Sudan, out of a total population of about 11.6 million, and another 2.3 million have fled the country as refugees, according to the United Nations. Extreme poverty and hunger are rife, with two thirds of the population needing humanitarian assistance as a result of conflict as well as three years of catastrophic floods.
AQABAT JABR REFUGEE CAMP (WEST BANK), FEB 4 (AP): The Israeli army raided a refugee camp near the Palestinian city of Jericho on Saturday, besieging houses it said were being used as hideouts for Palestinian attackers and shooting at residents who opened fire. The fighting wounded six Palestinians, two seriously, said the Palestinian Health Ministry, and jolted a generally quiet oasis town that has seen less violence than other West Bank cities.
The army said it entered the Aqabat Jabr refugee camp southwest of Jericho in the occupied West Bank to search for suspects involved in a shooting attack last week at a nearby Israeli settlement.
Last Saturday, with the West Bank on edge after the deadliest Israeli military raid in two decades and two subsequent Palestinian attacks in east Jerusalem that killed seven people, the army said a Palestinian gunman had opened fire in a restaurant at a settlement near Jericho. After firing one bullet, the gunman fled the scene, the army said. No one was wounded.
The army said several Palestinians had holed up in their homes after the shooting with the help of family and were planning future attacks.
To force the fugitives to surrender, a
military bulldozer clawed at the walls of one of the homes as an Israeli commander shouted threats over a loudspeaker. Camp residents reported receiving text messages urging families to keep their children inside and avoid clashing with Israeli troops. The suspects and family members trickled out of one of the homes and turned themselves in, the military said. Security forces had leveled much of the house, leaving a pile of rubble and twisted metal. Palestinian protesters threw rocks and Molotov cocktails at military jeeps as they rumbled down the camp streets, while some gunmen opened fire. The Israeli military fired back, wounding six, none critically, the Palestinian Health Ministry said.

“In actuality, the U.S. and China have never announced any visit, the US making any such announcement is their own business, and we respect that,” China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement Saturday morning.

Southeast Asian foreign ministers vowed to finalise negotiations with China over a proposed pact aimed at preventing conflicts in the disputed South China Sea in their annual retreat on Saturday in Indonesia’s capital.
In the final session of their two-day meeting, the ministers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations also agreed to unite in their approach to implement a five-step agreement made in 2021 between ASEAN leaders and Myanmar’s military leader, Senior Gen Min Aung Hlaing, that seeks to end that country’s worsening crisis.
China and the ASEAN member states, which include four rival claimants to territories in the South China Sea, have been holding sporadic talks for years on a “code of conduct,” a set of regional norms and
rules aimed at preventing a clash the disputed waters.
Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said that Indonesia, this year’s ASEAN chair, is ready to host more rounds of negotiations over the proposed pact, the first of which will be held in March. She said ASEAN members are committed to concluding the discussions

Astronomers have discovered 12 new moons around Jupiter, putting the total count at a record-breaking 92.
That’s more than any other planet in our solar system. Saturn, the onetime leader, comes in a close second with 83 confirmed moons.
The Jupiter moons were added recently to a list kept by the International Astronomical Union’s Minor Planet Center, said Scott Sheppard of the Carnegie Institution, who was part of the team.
They were discovered using telescopes in Hawaii and Chile in 2021 and 2022, and their orbits were confirmed with follow-up
observations. These newest moons range in size from 0.6 miles to 2 miles (1 kilometer to
3 kilometers), according to Sheppard.
“I hope we can image one of these outer moons close-up in the near future to better determine their origins,” he said in an email Friday. In April, the European Space Agency is sending a spacecraft to Jupiter to study the planet and some of its biggest, icy moons.
And next year, NASA will launch the Europa Clipper to explore Jupiter’s moon of the same name, which could harbor an ocean beneath its frozen crust.
Sheppard — who discovered a slew of moons around Saturn a few years ago and has taken part in 70 moon discoveries so far around Jupiter — expects
to keep adding to the lunar tally of both gas giants.
Jupiter and Saturn are loaded with small moons, believed to be fragments of once bigger moons that collided with one another or with comets or asteroids, Sheppard said. The same goes for Uranus and Neptune, but they’re so distant that it makes moonspotting even harder.
For the record, Uranus has 27 confirmed moons, Neptune 14, Mars two and Earth one. Venus and Mercury come up empty. Jupiter’s newly discovered moons have yet to be named. Sheppard said only half of them are big enough — at least 1 mile (1.5 kilometers) or so — to warrant a name. (AP)

start and how often to get them are a matter of some debate, so ask your doctor what’s best for you. The guidelines from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force are that women ages 50-74 with an average risk of breast cancer get a mammogram every 2 years, and that women in their 40s talk with their doctor about when to start getting mammograms and how often. And at any age, if you find a breast lump, ask your doctor about it.
Cervical cancer screening. These include a Pap test to look for abnormal cells in the cervix or an HPV test to see if you have the human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV is very common, but some strains of it raise the risk of cervical cancer. How often you should get these tests depends in part on your age and on whether your test results were normal last time. Check with your doctor.
Colorectal cancer screening. Start screening between ages 45 and 50, or younger if you’re at high risk -- talk to your doctor. Doctors may use colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy to look inside your colon or rectum for cancers or for polyps that could become cancer. There are also tests such as a guaiac-based fecal occult blood test, a fecal immunochemical test, or a stool DNA test to check for
blood in your bowel movements, which could be a sign that you have polyps.
Endometrial cancer screening. The endometrium is the lining of the uterus. Women who are at high risk for this type of cancer may want to consider getting an endometrial biopsy once a year to check for this risk. And any woman should tell their doctor if they have unexpected vaginal bleeding or spotting after menopause.
Lung cancer screening (for smokers). If you smoke now or have a history of heavy smoking, you may need a yearly lung cancer screening. This is a lowdose computed tomography (CT), which scans the lungs to look for signs of disease. Smoking is the top cause of lung cancer. But not everyone who gets lung cancer is a smoker. This screening isn’t recommended for other
people.
Prostate cancer screening. Experts recommend that men talk with their doctor about whether this screening would be helpful. Have that talk at age 45 if you’re African American or if your dad or brother had prostate cancer before age 65. Otherwise, start the discussion at age 50. If you do get this screening, it would involve getting a PSA test (a blood test), with or without a rectal exam.
Ask About Vaccines
The HPV vaccine can be given to children as young as 9 years old and is recommended for everyone under age 26. The vaccine protects against the strains of human papillomavirus, the sexually transmitted infection responsible for cervical, vaginal, vulvar, penis, and anal cancers.
There’s also the hepatitis B (HBV) vaccine. Hepa-
titis B is a liver disease that makes you more likely to get liver cancer. The vaccine can help prevent the infection.
Quit Smoking
Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer, which more people in the U.S. die of than any other cancer. Quitting, and avoiding secondhand smoke, lower your risk.
Smoking is also a risk factor for several other types of cancer, including cancer of the mouth and throat, stomach, colon, liver, and bladder. Ask your doctor for advice on how to kick the habit. And avoid other people’s smoke.
Eat More Plants
Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and beans are just some of the plant foods to enjoy. They have antioxidants, which help guard against tissue damage that raises cancer risk. Go for at least 2.5 cups of vegetables and fruit every day. Choose a variety of them, as there are many different types of antioxidants.
Plus, you’ll get plenty of fiber from plant foods. That might help lower the risk of colon cancer. And it’s filling, which may help if you’re trying to eat healthy while losing some extra weight. Remember: It’s not about trying to keep up with the latest “superfood” or making a huge change
overnight that you can’t keep up. Give yourself credit for even small shifts.
Work on a Healthy Weight
No question: Thin people can, and do, get cancer. But the more overweight you are, the greater your risk of having breast, endometrial (uterine), and colorectal cancers. Ask your doctor whether your body mass index (BMI) puts you at risk and what changes -- in what you eat and how much you exercise -- would help.
Step Up Activity
There is strong research showing that people who report regular exercise are less likely than inactive people to get certain cancers, according to the National Cancer Institute. That includes bladder cancer, breast cancer, colon cancer, endometrial cancer, esophageal cancer, kidney cancer, and stomach cancer. Experts recommend getting at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity that raises your heart rate (like brisk walking) per week. That works out to 30 minutes, 5 days a week. Or you can do 75-100 minutes per week of harder activity, like running. It’s also good to do strength training twice a week and exercises to help your balance. That’s a lot, if you’re not active now. Work your way up to that slowly. And if you have a health condition,
check with your doctor to see what types of activities are best for you.
Limit or Avoid Alcohol
Drinking beer, wine, or spirits is linked to higher rates of cancers of the mouth and throat, voice box, esophagus, colon and rectum, and liver. In women, alcohol is tied to a higher risk of breast cancer. If you drink, keep it to no more than one drink a day for women or two for men.
Be Sun-Smart
More than 3 million people are diagnosed with skin cancer every year, making it the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States. When you spend time outside, stick to hours when the sun isn’t at its peak. Wear sunscreen every day. Also, wear sunglasses, lightweight longsleeved shirts and pants, and a hat. Find a spot in the shade. And don’t use tanning beds. They raise your risk.
If You’re at High Risk
If you’re concerned that you’re at risk for cancer, talk to your doctor. They may recommend further testing, including genetic screening. Depending on your risk factors, there may
be specific changes you can make. For instance, you might start screenings earlier or get checked more often. There may be medicines or surgery that can reduce your risk. You may hear these called “chemoprevention” and “preventive surgery.” Chemoprevention means taking medications to stop cancer from developing. Your doctor may recommend taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or other medications if you have a family history of cancer, are at high risk, or have had it before and want to prevent recurrence. Other examples include tamoxifen, which may help if you’re at high risk for breast cancer. Preventive surgery removes tissue that’s likely to become cancerous. These surgeries are most common among women at high risk of being diagnosed with breast or ovarian cancers. They can involve removing one or both breasts (called prophylactic mastectomy) or the ovaries (called prophylactic oophorectomy). “High risk” includes having a family history of breast or ovarian ca

LIVERPOOL, FEB 4 ( AGENCIES): New Everton manager Sean Dyche enjoyed a dream start as a much-improved side stunned Premier League leaders Arsenal at a raucous Goodison Park, reports BBC Sports.
Dyche was appointed as boss last Monday following the departure of Frank Lampard, who was sacked with Everton in the relegation zone.
But the hosts picked up their first victory in 11 games in all competitions courtesy of a link-up between two men who played for Dyche at Burnley.
Centre-half James Tarkowski rose at the far post to power home a header from Dwight McNeil’s corner to spark the sort of joyous scenes that have been witnessed rarely at Goodison this term.
Everton had enjoyed much the better chances in the opening period too, but striker Dominic CalvertLewin could not convert from the excellent Amadou Onana’s low cross and also flicked a header wide.
Arsenal were outfought for large periods and failed to find any rhythm, although January signing Leandro Trossard forcing Jordan Pickford into a sharp save late on.
The Gunners were unable to find the leveller and will see their lead at the top cut to two points if champions Manchester City beat Tottenham on Sunday.
1 formation, Everton snapped into tackles and gave high-flying Arsenal no room to breathe - with Vitalii Mykolenko’s late challenge on captain Martin Odegaard in the second minute setting the tone.
The home side’s pressing and ferocious tackling was epitomised by Belgium international midfielder Onana, who made more tackles - four - than any other player on the pitch, with each challenge greeted by a roar from the home fans.
Everton show muchneeded fight and grit
Thousands marched down Goodison Road before kick-off, protesting against Everton’s board and its running of the club. But what a transformation there has been on the pitch in just five days under the experienced Dyche.
NEW DELHI, FEB 4
(PTI): Handed a 21-month ban for failing a dope test, Indian gymnastics ace Dipa Karmakar on Saturday said she accepted provisional suspension after returning positive for a banned drug to swiftly resolve her case with the international federation.
Karmakar, however, claimed that she “unknowingly ingested” the prohibited substance Higenamine -- S3 Beta-2 Agonists as per WADA prohibited list -- which was found in her dope sample.
“...I unknowingly ingested and could not determine the source of (the banned substance). I decided to take a provisional suspension with the hope of a swift resolution with the international federation,” Karmakar wrote on her Twitter handle, indicating that she had admitted to the doping rule violation.
Karmakar’s dope sample was collected outof-competition by the International Testing Agency (ITA), an independent organisation that manages the anti-doping programme of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG), on October 11, 2021.
According to US Anti-Doping Agency, Higenamine is found in several herbs used for traditional medicine and is used in supplements without sometimes naming it. It was added to the WADA prohibited list in 2017.
The drug is prohibited at all times, both in and out-of-competition.
The 29-year-old Karmakar, who shot to fame after finishing fourth in the 2016 Rio Olympics in the vault event, has been struggling with injuries ever since she underwent a surgery to treat an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in 2017.
Her last FIG event was the 2019 World Cup in Baku.
Her ban period will, however, end on July 10 this year as it was counted from the day (October 11,
2021) the sample was collected. Her results have been disqualified from October 11, 2021 onwards.
Karmakar said mentally her doping case has been the “toughest” battle she has fought in her life.
“I didn’t even know how it (the banned drug) entered my body and that for any sports person...it would have broken anybody. So it is not only hurtful but also the toughest mental battle that I have ever fought,” the gymnast from Tripura told PTI.
“I had two surgeries in 2017 and 2019 and when I returned to the field... I mean, I faced one setback after another. I just want to get back strongly on the field.”
According to the ITA, the case was resolved under a case resolution agreement pursuant to article 10.8.2 of the FIG AntiDoping Rules, which is applicable when “the Athlete or other Person admits an anti-doping rule violation after being confronted with the anti-doping rule violation by FIG and agrees to Consequences acceptable to FIG and WADA, at their sole discretion.”
The former Burnley boss has already set about changing the mindset of a team who have been abject this season.
Writing in his matchday programme notes, Dyche asked for “hard work” and a demonstration of the “pride” of wearing the Everton shirt - and he got both. Setting up in a 4-5-
Calvert-Lewin could possibly have done better with his chances but could not find the target, while Abdoulaye Doucoure - restored to the team after a falling out with Lampard had led to him being omitted - sent a free header wide. It did not cost them though, as Tarkowski nodded in at the back post on the hour mark before wheeling off to celebrate a goal that ended a run of four consecutive home defeats with a statement win.
Mumbai FC
MUMBAI, FEB 4 ( AGENCIES): The blockbuster encounter between Mumbai City FC and Hyderabad FC ended in a 1-1 draw at the Mumbai Football Arena on Saturday, February 4, reports Sports Keeda.
The Nizams pressed high early in the game, looking to close down space and reduce time on the ball for the Islanders. The
game was an intense tactical battle, with both sides neutralizing each other.
However, the home side took the lead in the 23rd minute. Nikhil Poojari was deemed to have handed the ball inside the box and Jorge Pereyra Diaz converted the resulting spot-kick.
Towards the end of the half, controversy stuck, as Sanjeev Stalin appeared to have held Rohit Danu, who
was through on goal. But the referee didn’t budge into any appeal from the visiting side. The half ended with Mumbai City FC leading by a goal to nil. Manolo Marquez’s team talk at halftime seemed to have worked as his side started picking momentum in the second half. Their pressure paid dividends as Hitesh Sharma equalized in the 65th minute.
PARIS, FEB 4 (IANS):
Alexandeor Zverev picked an opportune moment to record his second competitive win in eight months, defeating Stan Wawrinka 6-4, 6-1 to draw Germany level with Switzerland in their Davis Cup Qualifier in Trier, Germany.
In Bogota, it was all square for Great Britain and hosts Colombia after Colombia’s Nicolas Mejia earned his first Top 100 win with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 result against Daniel Evans, Cameron Norrie levelled the tie at 1-1 by beating Nicolas Barrientos 6-2, 7-5, according to information available on daviscup.com website.
The focus was on Zverev in the Switzerland v Germany tie.
Zverev, whose return to competitive action after ankle ligament surgery yielded three defeats from four matches in Australia at the turn of the month, looked much more like his old self in a commanding victory over the three-time Grand Slam champion.
The world No. 14 saw off Wawrinka in an hour and 36 minutes to cancel out Marc-Andrea Huesler’s battling 2-6 6-2 6-4 triumph over Oscar Otte earlier in the day. “I think it’s important to go into tomorrow’s ties with a 1-1 [scoreline],” said
MELBOURNE, FEB 4 (PTI): Batting great Greg Chappell believes Australia can win the upcoming highprofile four-match Test series as India are “vulnerable” this time with injuries to key players like Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah.
While the swashbuckling keeper-batter Pant is ruled out for most part of the year as he continues to recover from injuries sustained during a horrific car crash, Indian pace ace Bumrah (back injury) does not figure in the Indian squad for the first two Tests.
“Australia can win this series. India are more vulnerable at home than they have been for some time due to injuries to key players like Rishbah Pant, Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah. They will rely heavily on Virat Kohli,” Chappell wrote in an opinion piece for ‘Sydney Morning Herald’.
Premier spin-bowling all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who recovered from a knee injury and made a comeback in the Ranji Trophy last month, is in the Indian squad for the Test series beginning in Nagpur on Thursday.
“Visiting teams are often fooled by a game that seems to be going nowhere but suddenly changes at a frenetic pace. The Indians are used to this, so Australia will need to adapt quickly with mind, bat and ball,” said the former India coach.
Finger spinner Ashton Agar, who is Australia’s only lef-tarm tweaker in the squad, should be preferred to partner Nathan Lyon on turning tracks, Chappell said.
“Should the pitches favour spin, which is more likely, I expect Ashton Agar to get the nod because finger spin is considered to be more accurate,” said the 74-year-old Chappell who scored 7110 runs from 87 Tests with an impressive average of 53.86 between 1970 and 1984.
“Anil Kumble who took 619 wickets in Test cricket, rarely strayed off the straight and narrow. His stock in trade were fast, flat leg breaks which were always threatening the stumps. Batters knew if they missed, they were in trouble. Jadeja’s stock in trade is similarly unerring.
“Agar has got to emulate their roles. One bowler leaking runs will be the difference in a tight contest.”
Recollecting his conversation with Erapalli Prasanna, he wrote the Indian legend would spin the ball hard, try to hit the batter on the pads often, get him thinking about the spinning ball, and then trap him on the crease with a straight one.
“Line, he (Prasanna) said, was optional, length was mandatory. He explained to me that he would lay the seam a bit flatter than for the traditional off spinner and then impart a higher number of rotations on the ball that would make the ball drift like an off spinner but, once it landed on the leather, it would skid on with the arm giving the impression that it had gone ‘the other way’.
“As the leader of the spin attack, Nathan Lyon will need to take pages out of his book and show the way.”
Chappell, however, said that Australia will also have issues to iron out.
“David Warner is in patchy form and needs to improve his Test record in India; Usman Khawaja, Alex Carey, Travis Head and Cameron Green will be tested against better quality spin than they encountered in Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
“Marcus Labuschagne will be facing his first big test in the subcontinent; and Steve Smith’s recent batting tweaks will be examined more keenly than against the West Indies, South Africa and in the BBL,” he wrote.
The series will be like a ‘final frontier’ for the Pat Cummins-led No. 1 Test side who have been on a roll after the pacer took over from Tim Paine.
Australia have had a fine run recently, winning the Ashes and then the series against Pakistan, West Indies and South Africa. They will be in search of their first series win in India in 19 years.
Zverev. “Obviously I’m very happy with my game. I think that was the best match since my injury. It’s going in a positive way, and I hope I can continue progressing,” he was quoted as saying in a report on the ATP Tour
website. Wawrinka had lost all four of his previous meetings with Zverev and was unable to break that duck on Friday night.
“I think I played a lot more aggressively and maybe Stan’s spirit went down
The Lord is close to the broken hearted and saves who are crushed in spirit. Psalm 34:18
a little bit, but in the end, I picked up my level and I’m very happy with that,” said Zverev. The Germans will look to Andrea Mies and
Tim Puetz on Saturday to give them an all-important 2-1 advantage ahead of the reverse singles later in the day.

Neuer has attacked Bayern Munich club leaders over the dismissal of goalkeeper coach Toni Tapalovic.
The 36-year-old said that he considered leaving the club “as this was a heavy blow for me as I was already lying on the ground.”
While the 2014 world champion is recovering from a skiing accident leading to a broken leg, Bayern announced that they had sacked 42-year-old Tapalovic due to disagreements with head coach Julian Nagelsmann.
The Bayern keeper is sidelined for at least until the end of the 2022-2023 season. Neuer said he “thought about everything, including my future with the club.” The 2020 treble winner talked about
Manuel Neuerthe feeling his heart had been ripped out, saying the club’s action was the most “brutal thing I experienced in my career.”
Tapalovic not only had been Bayern’s goalkeeper coach since 2011 but also is a trusted family friend of Neuer.
The German international said the surprising action felt worse than the hostility from the club’s supporters he faced when joining Bayern in 2011 due to his past in the shirt of Schalke. Neuer questioned the club’s claimed family atmosphere expressed in
the slogan “we are what we are.”
“Bayern is claiming to be different from other clubs, as a fact like a family. Then something unbelievable like this happens, I have never seen before,” the goalkeeper said.
Bayern officials assured him that Tapalovic’s dismissal wasn’t meant to target him personally. “I told them I don’t accept the reasons they are talking about, and I had the feeling my perspective was heard,” said Neuer.
The keeper said his future working relationship with Nagelsmann will be carried out on a professional basis, as German media assumed the relationship between the coach and keeper has been damaged.
Neuer spoke about his feeling “of a guilty conscience” due to his skiing accident.

A 25day camp with 35 girls was held in Chennai under two coaches -- Thomas Dennerby and Maymol Rocky -- who made the girls train hard and then meticulously picked up 23 of them for the Bangladesh trip. “We have come prepared from India, and I am sure it will be an intense encounter against Bangladesh. These 23 players are

Apart from being a constant figure in Assam senior team in domestic cricket, Nechim played for
Mumbai Indians in four seasons from 2010 and was also a member of the 2013 IPL winning team. He was then a member of the Royal Challengers Bangalore from IPL 2014-16. Overall, he picked 12 wickets from 17 IPL matches at an economy rate of 8.69, becoming the first player from Assam to be a part of the tournament. His wicket tally stands at 172 from 68 first-class games, 65 from 61 List-A matches and 78 from 80 T20s.
The 34-year-old moved to Nagaland in the last season of domestic cricket and guided the side to the elite group of Ranji Trophy, claiming five wickets in a curtailed season.
